T

HIS MONTH begins with the celebration of Easter. This holiday of renewal reminds us all that fresh starts are indeed possible. And aren’t we all looking forward to starting something new and being refreshed right about now! Refresh the interior of your home with the look you’ve always wanted with the help of the help of the Kozar Design Team. Professionals, like Sandy on our cover, have the experience and industry connections to provide everything from furnishings to lighting to window treatments that create the perfect setting to enjoy your interior spaces to their fullest potential. And don’t neglect the other important inside areas of your home. Would a good night’s sleep on a new, comfortable bed create the fresh start you’ve been needing? Maybe roll out shelving would make your

kitchen cabinets and pantry more usable? Or is it your garage that needs some refreshing? In most cases, the garage is the last thing you see when leaving and the first thing you see when arriving home, so why not make that a much more enjoyable experience? Need some refreshing of the outdoor variety? This month, Dogwood Arts continues to celebrate its namesake with special garden tours, a downtown festival on the weekend of the 23rd and, of course, the many neighborhood trails that can be enjoyed by everyone. Spring can be short in East Tennessee, so be sure to visit their website for area trail maps and get out there among the beautiful trees and flowers! The end of April brings us Earth Day and Arbor Day, we encourage all of our readers to find one specific way to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and to plant a tree. May we suggest a dogwood?

interior designer is perhaps the only thing more challenging than decorating your new home or redecorating your existing home. “A great interior designer possesses extraordinary listening skills,” replied Sandy Kozar, owner of Decorating Den Interiors, when asked what she felt was the single most important characteristic of a successful interior designer. Sandy went on to say that a skilled interior designer is also a capable facilitator. “Your designer will ask a multitude of questions about you, your family and lifestyle, how you envision your home being used now and in the future, your personal preferences and individual tastes. And you should always be made

Your completed design should be a reflection of who you are.” Sandy, an award-winning and professionally trained designer, and her multi-talented design group have been featured on HGTV as a Pro Network Designer, Best of Houzz three years in a row for customer service, and Dream Room Winner. Well-known and respected throughout the Knoxville area for her creative planning and design of both residential and commercial spaces, Sandy’s designs are featured in the popular “The Kitchen Bible” book by Barbara Ballinger, “Love Your Home,” a newly published book by Carol Donayre-Bugg, and is a frequent contributor to Everything Knoxville

Sandy and her team at Decorating Den Interiors have won multiple awards for their designs in an International Dream Room competition. In this month’s issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to share our recent interview with Sandy. EK: Sandy, what would you say sets you and your design team apart from your peers? Sandy: As degreed professional designers, our team possesses the education and experience required to design beautiful and functional spaces for our clients. We typically do not sell design hours, focusing

instead on the quality of the products and services each client desires to realize the greatest impact for their budget. This unique approach allows us to spend the time necessary to design complete and beautiful living spaces and not be focused on the clock. We can offer our clients a curated collection of fine furnishings, upholstery, custom window treatments, accessories, art, and more, with access nationally and internationally. We provide good, better, best, and even luxury lines for our clients with classic styling, alongside the latest trends for today’s lifestyles. Clients also appreciate that we offer a complimentary consultation, including virtual consultations. EK: What is included in your complimentary consultation? Sandy: We tour your home and conduct a detailed question and answer session to understand what the client is looking for and considerations to include in the recommended design of their home. It helps us to understand their personality, needs, likes, and dislikes to create a tailored, unique design. We also help establish the client’s budget to determine the project scope, after which we schedule the design appointment and start making the “magic” happen for the client. EK: How long does it take for the “magic,” as you have described it, to happen? Sandy: If you truly want a beautiful room, it takes time, but it’s always worth the wait! After your initial consultation, we create a comprehensive design to include three-dimensional space plans, renderings, and elevations, as well as finish and fabric samples, fully customized for each project within two weeks. Once the design is finalized, we place and track all orders, updating our client on the status, inspecting as it arrives, then scheduling our team to be on-site to bring everything together in one visit, just like you see on HGTV. We find that revealing the transformation this way really makes a statement! EK: Share with our readers what you enjoy most about interior design. Design a Wine Haven That’s One-of-a-Kind BY C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y, W W W.C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y.C O M

I

F YOU’RE a wine lover, you may dream of building a cellar of your own. But if the time isn’t right to take on a project of that scale, it doesn’t mean you can’t have an appetizer before you get to the main course! Beautiful wine storage is within reach, custom-designed to suit your décor - and your taste in vino. Here are some factors to consider when creating a budget-friendly wine nook that won’t be short on sophistication. Space Think outside the box when it comes to a location for your special wine spot. Is there room under a stairwell? An unused corner of the kitchen pantry? Creative wine storage can be designed to fit any space, housing everything from a mid-sized collection to a select grouping of favorites. Racking When wine is stored upright, natural corks can dry out, letting damaging air and bacteria into the bottle. Custom-designed storage combinations of pegs, columns, and diamond bins will allow your bottles

to safely rest on their sides, preventing “cork taint” by keeping corks moist. Finishes Choose natural wood to avoid gas-emitting stains and finishes that can contaminate your wine. Use non-toxic butcher block oil to seal and protect your racks. If you add lighting, use LED, which won’t give off heat. Create a custom-designed home for your wine with the help of the design team at Closets by McKenry. You’ll treat your bottles to their own elegant storage until the day your full cellar is in view!

6 Things You Should Know About Home Security Systems

T

HERE ARE many considerations when installing a home security system, including the benefits of the latest home convenience features now offered. In our 40 years of serving East Tennessee families, here are just a few of the reasons why homeowners choose Fleenor Security Systems to protect their homes and loved ones. 1. Protect valuables Protecting valuables, of course, is the benefit most people immediately think of regarding home security. We likely all know someone who has lost electronics, jewelry, or other high-value items due to a home invasion. The tragedy can intensify if the stolen valuable is an irreplaceable family heirloom. While using a safe can help protect irreplaceable items, a home security system has an alarm that can scare off many would-be burglars - before they are inside - and notify the local authorities if someone does attempt a break-in. 2. Deter crime A 2009 study by Rutgers found that as the number of home security systems increased in an area, the number of

residential robberies decreases - even for people who did not own a security system. Having a security system not only protects you; it also helps deter crime and create a safer neighborhood for everyone. 3. Allow remote access to your home Modern security systems now allow you to remotely monitor your home from your phone when you’re not there. You can monitor security cameras installed throughout your home, control smart thermostats, smart keyless door locks, smart lighting, and other smart devices in every room of your home. 4. Lower homeowner insurance premiums Having a monitored system in your home can lower your homeowner’s insurance premiums. These savings, combined with instant access to police and emergency responders, makes a security system a great value. 5. Notification of fire alarm or gas leak You can opt-in to receive notifications if your smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors go off when you’re away from home. You can even set up the system to notify authorities in the event of these emergencies.

6. Provide peace of mind The sense of security and comfort you gain with an alarm system is perhaps the most prominent benefit of all. Next to being protected, the confidence of feeling safe will help you be a more productive, healthy, and focused person. Adding a security system to your home gives you an extra layer of defense against any potential intruders. Whether you rent or own, you can enjoy the benefits that come with having a security system. Contact us today to schedule your free consultation with a professional at Fleenor Security to see how a security system can better protect your valuables and loved ones.

The Best Spring Update for Your Home

Y

OUR HARDWOOD floors were once the pride and joy of your home. Now, instead of adding to the overall appearance of your home, they detract from it, causing you to strategically arrange area rugs over high traffic and damaged areas in an attempt to camouflage them. Throughout the years, UV damage, normal daily wear and tear, scratches, minor water damage, and a host of other mishaps have transformed your once magnificent hardwood floors into an eyesore that you try to hide. There’s a solution that we are all familiar with: Refinishing. However, many of us are reluctant to refinish our home’s hardwood floors because of the negative refinishing stories others have shared with us, such as dust from sanding permeates every square inch of your home and there’s an overpowering odor of stains and finishes. Sadly, many of those stories are true. But, even more sadly, these types of experiences don’t need to be repeated but often are. There have been significant technological advances in hardwood flooring refinishing that have all but eliminated these most common homeowner complaints. Bona, the world’s foremost name in the wood floor care and refinishing industry, has developed a system that eliminates the dust and odors associated with hardwood floor refinishing. In East Tennessee, European Fine Hardwood Floors, who are recipients of the much

coveted Bona Certified Craftsman honor, has invested in the training and technology to provide you with the dustless and odor free hardwood floor refinish experience you deserve. With Bona’s vacuum technology, dust from sanding is safely removed using a high-efficiency vacuum system with HEPA filters. These vacuums, placed outside your home, are connected to European Fine Hardwood Floors’ refinishing equipment using high-volume vacuum hoses. The result? Dustless refinishing! This, combined with their low to no odor stains and finishes, ensures that your hardwood floor refinishing experience will be a positive one. Just ask their customers. With well-learned craftsmanship and state-ofthe-art vacuum systems, European Fine Hardwood Floors is truly a cut above your typical hardwood flooring installer or refinisher. To learn more, or to request your no-obligation, in-home consultation/ estimate, call European Fine Hardwood Floors to update your home’s hardwood floors this spring.

“Several years ago we refinished our hardwood floors. Upon meeting Valera and Svetlana, we were immediately impressed with their professionalism and knowledge. Valera was very hard working and meticulous. The job was completed on time, there was no mess or dust to clean up, and the floors were restored to a higher level than we had previously seen. We recently purchased another house and called Valera and Svetlana to refinish the floors. Again, the results were outstanding. Friends and visitors always compliment our beautiful floors and often ask who did the work. We are happy to recommend they call EFHF. They are fine craftsmen and delightful people to work with. Seeing them again for the new project was like meeting with old friends.” - Bob Marquis

N BEHALF of the entire Hunt family, as we begin our 9th year in business, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for both your support and encouragement since we launched Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village. In addition to offering incredible savings on thousands of square feet of quality, name brand, pre-owned furniture, home décor, lamps, Oriental and area rugs, and art from homes in area lake and golf front communities, including Tellico Village and Rarity Bay, Premiere Consignment also provides the opportunity to sell your unused personal items through our eBay store. We are the perfect venue to take full advantage of this continuously growing selling phenomenon. The key to success in selling many of your household items at the highest price is to target a marketplace with the largest number of potential buyers. Through the power of eBay’s millions of buyers, products can often sell much faster and at a much higher price than you might expect – and with very little effort on your part. Here’s how it works: Potential items are evaluated at our intake area; accepted items receive a tracking number. Those items are then professionally photographed. Item description, pricing, and photographs are entered on eBay’s website. As items are sold, they’re carefully packed and shipped to the winning bidder. You then receive payment for your sold items! To get positive results on eBay, items need to be presented in as professional a manner as possible. Premiere Consignment has made a significant investment in photographic and lighting equipment, computer software, and hardware to bring the power of eBay to you. Our expertise ensures quality photos with well-written descriptions. And because buyers are often reluctant to purchase from sellers with limited records or no track record at all, Premiere Consignment’s high eBay seller rating is another plus. With the quality and quantity of items we sell on eBay, we give potential buyers the peace of mind that comes from selecting a seller with an established track record. To learn how to take advantage of a world of opportunity to sell many of your unused household items through Premiere Consignment, powered by eBay, call us at 865-458-9721 or visit us at 320 Lakeside Plaza in Loudon today. Could This Happen to Your Family? BY Y VO N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

ELL , IT happened again. I got a call from an adult daughter whose dad had just died, and she and her four siblings could not find the will. I knew her dad, and Yvonne Marsh, we agreed that there was no way CFP®, CPA he would have left them hanging like that. He was an organized, methodical man. Her mom had already passed, and there was literally no one to ask. They turned his house upside down, visited several banks looking for a safe deposit box, and finally had to hire an attorney to help them get the daughter established as an executor. You can imagine how hard this was for the family, trying to plan a funeral and contain their grief while feeling adrift, not knowing what their dad’s final wishes really were. I wish I could say I’ve never seen this scenario play out before, but that wouldn’t be true. So here’s my chance to be your little nudge to ensure your family doesn’t find themselves in this same tragic predicament. I suggest you: • Get your legal planning done NOW, including an updated will, financial powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. • Tell your executor where your original will is kept. (They cannot probate a copy; it must be the original.) • If your will is in a safe deposit box, make the executor a signatory and give them a key. • If your kids will inherit pre-tax IRA money, put a note on your will that says “Stop! Do nothing until you talk to a qualified CPA or tax professional.” You can’t un-ring the tax bell if they make a wrong move. • Check your beneficiary designations on all IRAs and 401ks, and make sure you have named primary and back-up beneficiaries to keep those accounts out of your probate estate. We’ve also created a Sound Solutions Checklist to help you inventory your personal, financial, and legal affairs that will give your family a lighted path to follow when that day comes. It’s yours to download for free at www.marshwealth.com/checklist. Trust me, they’ll thank you for it. Dogwood Arts Kicks Off 2021 Spring Celebration

S

I N C E 195 5 , Dog wood Ar t s has hosted Knoxville’s favorite springtime celebration. What started as a neighborhood beautification project has blossomed into a year-round celebration of our region’s art, culture, and natural beauty. With spring finally here, Dogwood Arts is gearing up to do it all again with a mixture of in-person and virtual events. Dogwood Arts is opening the season with a bang by distributing more than 10,000 Art Kits for Kids to art students in Knox, Anderson, and Blount County schools as they return from spring break. The Art Kits for Kids program started as a pandemic response initiative in April 2020 and is now part of the organization’s ongoing efforts. A charitable contribution of art and educational supplies from Newell Brands allowed the organization to expand the program exponentially, getting valuable supplies into the hands of students across the region. Knoxville’s historic Dogwood Trails date back to 1955 and today cover more than 85 miles in 12 neighborhoods throughout the city. Visitors are invited to walk, drive, or bike the Trails as they take in the natural scenic beauty of East Tennessee in the springtime. The Dogwood Trails, Open Gardens, and Camera Sites are open April 1-30. Open Gardens and Camera Sites are open from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Holston Hills is the 2021 Featured Dogwood Trail. Established in 1956, the Holston Hills Dogwood Trail is located in an architecturally diverse neighborhood that offers sweeping views of the Holston River alongside panoramic vistas of the rolling East Tennessee hills. Beautiful lots in this neighborhood tend to be situated on big, rolling hills with old-growth trees and an abundance of spring-flowering dogwoods. Everyone is invited to participate in Chalk

(Your) Walk, a community-wide event that encourages artists of all ages to create oneof-a-kind chalk artworks on neighborhood sidewalks, driveways, and public spaces! This virtual competition runs April 3-12 and is open to individual artists and families throughout Knoxville and the surrounding counties. Next, visitors can experience two spectacular private gardens that will be open to the public for one weekend only for our Featured Gardens event on April 17 from 10 am to 5 pm and April 18 from 12 to 5 pm. The Anderson Estate and GATOP (God’s Answer to our Prayers) will be open this year. This event is free to attend, though a $5 on-site donation is encouraged. From April 23-25, the well-loved Dogwood Arts Festival will move to the beautifully redesigned Performance Lawn at World’s Fair Park. The event will feature the work of 75 art vendors working in mixed media, pottery, painting, photography, glass, jewelry, sculpture, and more. The move to World’s Fair Park will allow visitors to mask up and support these talented artists with plenty of room to safely distance. And the fun doesn’t stop after April! Another round of world-class sculptures and bold, bright new murals will be popping up all across Knoxville, Oak Ridge, and Blount County this summer as a part of our Art in Public Places Program. It’s time again to welcome another blooming East Tennessee spring! Follow Dogwood Arts on Facebook or visit www.dogwoodarts.com to discover more about the events, programs, and exhibits featured this season. Dogwood Arts, presented by ORNL Federal Credit Union, is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to promote and celebrate our region’s art, culture, and natural beauty. Shift Your Garage into High Gear It Starts with the Floor

G

ONE ARE the days when you had to settle for a drab, oil-stained, cement-gray garage floor. Today, your garage floor can be as beautiful as any other room in your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 13 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. It is the toughest floor coating available and: • Stands up against the heat and friction of hot tires. • Resists chipping, peeling, fading, or stains. • Protects the concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. The coating also protects the concrete floor from the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage, which promote deterioration and cracking. • Resists spills, including water, gasoline,

oil, other auto fluids, and paint thinner. • Reduces the buildup of allergens, dust, and dirt that cling to unfinished concrete. • Cleans up easily; nothing sticks to the surface, so spills are no problem. For general cleanup, you only need a mop and water. • Comes with a 10-year warranty. • Increases the value of your house. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal

HE GUILD of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents Artists on Location 2021, to promote the museum’s connection to the local and regional art community. At the end of the week, there is an art show and sale at the Knoxville Museum of Art, located at 1050 World’s Fair Park in downtown Knoxville, April 24 from 5:30 to 9 pm that provides both new and seasoned collectors a rare opportunity to buy original paintings of Knoxville and East Tennessee. From April 19-23, talented artists selected through a careful, juried process will be painting outdoors in and around the Knoxville area. The public is invited to watch AOL’s artists in action as they capture on canvas a wide variety of subject matter, from urban street scenes to pastoral garden settings. The artists’ specific locations will be published on www.knoxart.org prior to the event and will be followed on the KMA Guild’s Instagram page @artistsonlocation. Covid-19 safety protocols will be in effect for this annual art show and sale. Proceeds will benefit both participating artists and the Knoxville Museum of Art. Reservations are required. Janie Hendrix BY R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y.C O M

M

USIC LOVING baby boomers certainly know who Jimi Hendrix was. For those who don’t know who he was, he was one of the most influential guitarists in the history of rock music. In his very short career (he died in 1970 at the age of 27), he recorded four albums, became famous worldwide, and was known for playing an otherworldly version of the national anthem at Woodstock. Upon his death, his estate (albums, publishing, etc.) was worth an estimated $5 million. He died without a will, so that left countless legal loose ends. His father, Al, was the sole heir and executor of Jimi’s estate. After Al Hendrix’s death in 2002, Jimi’s baby sister (by marriage), Janie, began managing his estate, taking it over when it was reportedly $25 million in debt. She is currently president and CEO of Experience Hendrix, LLC. According to one report, under Janie’s management, Jimi’s estate is ranked number five in all-time grossing revenues for a recording artist, after Elvis Presley, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Bob Marley. Janie keeps her brother’s legacy alive through new and/or remastered products. Recently, the estate has released the new documentary, “Music, Money, Madness... Jimi Hendrix in Maui,” which chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s storied visit to Maui and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie. It also incorporates never-before-released original footage and new interviews. Additionally, Janie and Yoko Ono have joined forces (among other principals) to launch The Coda Collection - a new music-centric channel on Amazon Prime. I reached out to Janie to discuss the story behind the new channel and other things that Experience Hendrix, LLC is undertaking.

28

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

April 202 1

Janie said of the new channel: “The Coda Collection is a channel that allows for the audience to basically have a backstage pass to all the shows. I love Yoko and what she’s done to help preserve John’s legacy. I’ve learned that she’s just this wonderful, generous woman that has gotten a bad rap over the years. I think some people don’t really know her or what her missions and goals are. But she really has dedicated her life to preserving John Lennon’s legacy.” Shifting the conversation to the subject of her brother’s music, I asked for her thoughts as to why she feels it has stood the test of time. “I think the fact that Jimi wrote more than 200 songs - he definitely shared his voice, and that’s within a four-year period of time,” she said. “His music is not just rock, but blues. His guitar playing - he’s still one of the best guitarists in the world, and he’s been gone longer than he had walked the earth. I really feel like when a musician or any person is on this earth and they have a mission to accomplish - and Jimi did - their trade, their task, what they were sent here to do - for Jimi, it was a message of love, and that’s what he gave. And so his music being a three-piece band, having such an amazing sound with only three pieces - I’m not talking about what he created at Woodstock, but the Experience and the Band of Gypsies - there are three people - a bass, a drummer, and him and what he created, the sounds, is hard for people to even replicate to this day. He challenged people’s souls in their lives then, and he continues to do so now.” When asked what the receptivity has been

on the new documentary, “Music, Money, Madness... Jimi Hendrix in Maui,” Janie shared, “Well, I think a lot of fans are like you. They’re hungry for the music. At one point the fans wanted us just to hand it all over. Eddie Kramer was Jimi’s engineer at the time when Jimi was alive and continues to be Jimi’s engineer, and we really do put a lot of care and take the time that’s necessary to sort through the music and put together projects that make sense. Initially, it took us two years to fight in the courts to get our rights back. And then, upon doing that, my dad created Experienced and Authentic Hendrix, which ran both the music and the merchandise side for Jimi. Our goal and our mission was as a family complete company to preserve and protect his legacy. And that’s what we do.” There is so much more to this interview that covers the Seattle area park that honors him, some insight into the relationship between Janie and Jimi, as well as some slight hints about what will be coming out from the Hendrix estate. You can listen to the interview in its entirety by visiting www.boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Chef Curtis Stone Shares Tips for a Happier, More Efficient Kitchen

Cauliflower & Broccoli White Cheddar Pasta Bake

T

HE KITCHEN has long been the heart of the home and now more than ever is central to our lifestyles. With 60% of Americans discovering a greater appreciation for cooking throughout the pandemic and planning to upgrade their kitchens as a result, Michelinstarred Chef Curtis Stone is sharing his favorite appliances, features, and tips that have allowed his family to better savor more time at home. “As a chef, restaurant owner, and father, I’m a strong believer in making your kitchen work harder for you. Whether you prioritize keeping your food fresher longer or find yourself experimenting with new cooking techniques and recipes, here are a few of my latest ‘must-haves’ for maximizing efficiency in the kitchen of 2021.” 1. Put quality first. If you ask me, there are two keys to making good food: Great ingredients and quality appliances. Restaurant-quality results are easy to achieve when you use fresh ingredients - always shop in season - and the right tools. I’m a big fan of appliances that combine power, performance, and high efficiency. The new Bosch industrial-style ranges and rangetops are a great example - sure to turn heads in any kitchen and also keep up with all that extra cooking! 2. Prioritize health and wellness. From the ingredients we’re putting into our bodies to managing busy schedules, health and wellness are an important part of happiness and energy. I recently learned that hydration plays a big role in overall well-being. A recent study found that those who drink six or more glasses of water a day tend to be happier, wake up feeling more refreshed, and are most likely to describe themselves as successful. More than half of Americans are also “ice obsessed” and drink less water if it is not cold or iced. This could not be more true in our home - my boys are always in and out of the refrigerator for cold drinks - which is why a refrigerator that can keep up with our fresh food storage and ice and water habits is key. The latest QuickIcePro System refrigerators from Bosch produce a lot of ice quickly, thanks to one of the fastest ice makers available. 3. Plan, organize, and store for fewer trips to the store. Kitchen organization and fewer grocery runs start with a good list. Opt for versatile ingredients, plan for meals that stretch across multiple days, and again prioritize quality when it comes to storage. My family chose a refrigerator that offers precise temperature and humidity control for maximum freshness. I also recommend organizational features that bring items into view, such as flexible, multi-layered shelving and wide storage bins so nothing gets buried. One of my favorite healthy new recipes, this veggie-packed pasta bake, can not only be made ahead, it also makes for delicious leftovers that can be quickly reheated in the oven for an easy weeknight meal. Check out the full recipe, and cheers to a happier, more efficient 2021 kitchen!

Ingredients: • 1 head cauliflower, cored, cut into large bitesize florets • 1 pound broccoli florets • Kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper • 1 1/2 cups dried penne • 3 tablespoon olive oil • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour • 2 cups whole milk • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 1/4 cups shredded white cheddar cheese • 1 cup coarse fresh breadcrumbs (made in a food processor or blender from 2 slices bread) • 1/2 cup grated parmesan Directions: Preheat oven on broil mode. Lightly oil a 2-quart baking dish or 4 individual crocks. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add cauliflower and broccoli. Cook for 2 minutes or until broccoli turns bright green. Using strainer, remove vegetables from boiling water and submerge in a large bowl of ice water. Drain and set aside vegetables when cool. Return salted water to a boil. Add penne, stirring often for 7 minutes or until tender but still firm to bite. Drain penne. Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil, onions, and thyme. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes or until onions are tender and slightly browned. Sprinkle flour over onion mixture, then stir and cook for 1 minute or until pale golden brown. Gradually stir in milk and cream. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring often for 4 minutes or until sauce is lightly thickened and has no raw flour taste. Reduce heat to low, add cheddar cheese, and stir until melted. Season with salt and pepper. Add vegetables and penne to cheese sauce and fold together. Spread evenly in baking dish. In small bowl, toss breadcrumbs, parmesan, and remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to coat, then sprinkle over pasta mixture. Broil for about 4 minutes or until crumbs are golden. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

E AT Aqua Clear Water Systems believe that upgrading yo u r h o m e w it h a w ate r filtration system is the #1 way to increase your home’s value and your family’s health. In the past year, we’ve spent more time in our homes than ever before, and the housing market has absolutely exploded. So, we’d like to give you 5 reasons why a Kinetico Water System is your next best home improvement investment. 1. Improved Water Quality, Taste & Odor. East Tennessee’s water is known for its hardness, as well as chlorine, iron, sediment, and other harmful contaminants polluting the water. A whole house Kinetico water filtration system can remove all of these contaminants to give you tasteless, odorless, and silky feeling soft water throughout your home. 2. Improved Life of Appliances & Fixtures. A system will protect your home from damages caused by a variety of water contaminants! You could be extending the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, pipes, refrigerator, and more by installing a Kinetico water system, because

reducing the build-up in these appliances allows them to work efficiently. 3. Increased Value of Your Home. With the housing market booming, we’d love to help you get a bigger bang for your buck when selling. An article titled 10 Upgrades That Increase Home Values by Forbes stated “this amenity will pay off now and in the future when it’s time to sell.” 4. Improved Health. Chlorine is a harmful chemical used to treat bacteria in water. While it’s necessary to kill bacteria, chlorine can’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. When you shower in chlorinated tap water, your skin absorbs the chlorine like a sponge, leaving your health at risk. To name a few, high amounts of chlorine can cause breathing and lung problems, as well as cancer from THMs agents. Filtering your water could save you from unnecessary illnesses. 5. Improved Skin & Hair. A whole house filtration system reduces the amount of build-up on your appliances, as well as your skin and hair. Who wouldn’t want that? Softened water results in brighter skin, shinier hair, and longer-lasting clothes.

Now that you know the benefits of installing a whole-home filtration system, we’d love the opportunity to help you improve your home in 2021 by doing an in-person or virtual free water health check-up. We’ll come to your house for FREE or connect via Zoom. It’s your choice! For Everything Knoxville readers only, we’re offering an exclusive designer faucet in the color of your choice ($195 value) and $200 off when you purchase a system before March 31, 2021. D A P T E D B Y James Still from the classic story by Margery Williams, “The Velveteen Rabbit” is a beloved tale faithfully told and carefully expanded for the stage. It is an emotional journey through time, as told through the eyes of a young man looking back on his childhood. By reliving the relationship between his 4-year-old self and his favorite toy, the velveteen rabbit, he rediscovers the true meaning of friendship. Central to the story is, of course, the velveteen rabbit, who is introduced to the idea of becoming real by the old rocking horse. The play explores the rewards of loyalty, the poignancy of loss, and the wonderful, surprising powers of love. Appropriate for all ages. ET READY to let the great out-ofdoors in! The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. But are you really able to enjoy all your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in the design and creation of outdoor “rooms,” including porches and lanais. Even with beautiful lighting, weatherproof artwork, luxurious fireplaces, and kitchens complete with grills and refrigerators, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects can often keep homeowners and their guests from enjoying their outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to this dilemma. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience, allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days while extending the amount of time they can spend on patios and decks, where biting insects can become a nuisance in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views of the beautiful outdoors or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when you need them. For the ultimate in elegance, Screens of East Tennessee offers custom colors and wood grain finishes that will blend into virtually any architectural style and provide a seamless transition between your interior and exterior color schemes. These remarkable screens can be programmed to come down or retract according to sun and wind sensors, and they can be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. The Benefits of Grooming

VERYONE LOVES having clean hair and skin. Our dogs deserve the same treatment, as proper hygiene is essential! They give us unconditional love, and it’s up to us to ensure their health and well-being. Dogs have a natural tendency to groom their own fur and try to remove debris from their toes, but they can’t bathe themselves, trim their own toenails, or clean their own ears. We must be loving and diligent in their upkeep and grooming. Grooming sessions should be enjoyable like a spa day, not a mass production. Most dogs love being caressed and respond to touch positively, so at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, our groomer takes his time, providing a calming, relaxing environment. Haircuts, shampooing, and drying are aimed at keeping your dog’s skin and fur healthy and beautiful. While bathing your pet, he has the opportunity to inspect for any unusual growths or other problems and can alert you if a trip to veterinarian is needed. Regular grooming prevents painful hair matting

which can pull on skin, leading to sores and infections. At home, never try to cut out your dog’s hair mats - leave that to the professional groomer! To clean soiled hair from private areas, grooming is also the answer. Older pets can benefit from extra massage to soothe aches and pains. Grooming is more than simply making your pup look better - it is an integral part of caring for your dog’s health. Your dog gives you unreserved love, so a day at the spa is in line for him! Call Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits at 865-986-6325 to reserve your dog’s day at the spa. Pets are our kids! We will treat your dog as our own, with individual love and attention. April in the Garden BY L I S A G R U G I N

S

PRING IS in the air! Well, it is today. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. That’s the main thing I want you to remember as we go into April: Mother Nature is very unpredictable! Our last frost can be anywhere from late March to May. The average is April 15th, but please wait on tender plants or be prepared to protect them. We still have Blackberry winter and Dogwood winter to go! What are things that you can do this month? There is a big list! • Number one is the monthly checkup. Take a long walk around your yard and give your plants an up-close-and-personal look. What has freeze damage or insect damage? What has started to sprout fungus? What needs to be pruned, divided, moved, or composted? What has changed that will mean a difference in your gardening? Look up, down, and all around, then make your plans. Think about what is realistic for you to accomplish by yourself and what you’ll need help with. Contact lawn services and landscapers soon - they are already getting very busy. • Please don’t hire a landscaper unless you’ve done some checking. Your landscape has a huge impact on the look of your home, so make sure the person you

hire is reputable. Look at photos and check reviews, but please be careful of Nextdoor and other places where it’s easy for a nasty person to ruin the reputation of a good company. • When you’re looking for insects, remember that not every bug is a bad bug. There are many that can help you out! If you do see damage, it’s best to start treating before you have an infestation. Call if you have questions, or bag the little critters and bring them in. • Last year was a fungal nightmare because of all the rain. If you had problems with some of your plants last year, keep an eye on those and start treating if you see fresh signs. Those that are susceptible to black spot, rust, powdery mildew, etc. may benefit from a systemic product. • You can get your planting beds ready even if you’re waiting to plant. Add compost or aged manure to beds to up the nutrient level. Get weeds out, but don’t apply a pre-emergent if you’re going to plant seeds. I have become a fan of worm castings, so you can also add a thin layer of that to the top of your beds. • I suggest planting flower beds in stages because some plants are more tolerant of cool temperatures than others. Petunias, geraniums, lantana, and some

other annuals will handle a light frost. Begonias and impatiens turn to mush. • Did you plant containers last year? If so, get those ready to go. If your planters are small, dump the soil out and rinse the pot. If the plants had any fungal problems, mix a tablespoon of bleach into a gallon of water and pour it into the pot, then rinse it out. Refill the container with fresh, good quality soil. I’m a fan of Happy Frog, but any good quality soil will do. • If your containers are large or have permanent occupants (shrubs, perennials, etc.), top dress them with a couple of inches of compost or fresh soil. A 1/4ˮ to 1/2ˮ of worm castings or some mycorrhizae will help these, too. After 3-5 years, you really need to take everything out and start all over. Remember to NEVER use ground soil in containers. Potting soil is for pots, garden soil is for gardens. You can’t substitute one for the other! • How about vegetables? You’re safe planting any of the cool season vegetables, but wait until mid-month for tomatoes, peppers, and corn. Super sweet varieties of corn should wait even longer, until the soil is around 70 degrees. This is usually early May. • Prune spring blooming shrubs within a couple of weeks after they finish blooming. Older forsythia, quince, weigela, and lilacs can be severely pruned to rejuvenate them if needed. You can prune crepe myrtles as they start to leaf out if you haven’t already pruned them, but DO NOT commit crepe murder! Don’t cut bulbs back until after the foliage has yellowed so they can store up nutrients for next year. Please call us with questions. Don’t go out and start whacking! • This is also the time to fertilize if you haven’t done so already. Acid lovers need an acid type fertilize such as HollyTone. General purpose fertilizers will work on everything else. April 15th is your end date for fertilizing warm season grasses. • I want to put a quick plug in for the birds and other pollinators. Please plant at least part of your yard with plants that help them survive and lay off the toxic chemicals as much as possible. It’s also baby bird season, so keep those feeders clean and full! We have new loads of plants and garden décor coming in almost every day. Stop by and see what’s new!

O M E T I M E S K N OW N by common names including wake robin or trinity flower, trillium is a genus comprised of 49 species, with 39 of them being native to North America. In their native habitat, trillium grow best in partly shaded, deciduous woodland areas. In early spring, these ephemeral beauties begin to emerge and cover forest floors where they have colonized. One of their common names, trinity flower, can help with identification as it refers to the arrangement of the plant’s parts – leaves and flower petals – that occur in multiples of three. Trillium are typically divided into two groups: Pedicellate, where the flower is raised on a pedicel slightly above the foliage, and sessile, in which there is no pedicel and the flower sits directly above the foliage. Depending on the species, trillium begin to bloom in early to late spring with a wide range of flower colors, including white, yellow, and various shades of red. While they can be easily found in woodland areas in spring and early summer months, they are threatened in their natural habitats due to human interference. Although they may seem plentiful in the wild, do not be tempted to remove one, as several species are listed as threatened or endangered, making it illegal to remove trillium from their native habitat. Though availability may initially appear limited, seek out nurseries that specialize in native plants and responsibly propagate their plants instead of removing them from the wild, or find a reputable online source for choice selections. Popular selections available include T. luteum and T. recurvatum ‘Arcadia’. Trillium are extremely low maintenance, long lived plants that can live up to 50 years, making them desirable for avid gardeners. To grow trillium in your own garden, they should be planted in a partly shaded area with moist but well drained soil that also has a high organic matter content. If planting in heavy clay soil, amending the soil with peat moss and compost should help in achieving better growing conditions. At the UT Gardens, Jackson, you can find

Step Up Your Shoe Storage H

E E L S , F L AT S , w e d g e s , strappy, platform, sandals, boots. Ye s , la die s , we have a w id e variety of shoe styles because there are so many different occasions that require different kinds of footwear, clothing, and accessories. Unfortunately, without dedicated storage in a closet, shoes are usually piled on the floor where they get kicked around, stepped on, and need replacing more often. Properly storing shoes in your closet will help display your favorite footwear while saving space, time, and money. No matter what the size of your closet, these options will help you step up your shoe storage. Shoe Shelves Using dedicated solid shelves keep shoes in top form and easily seen when organized by type and color. To maximize space, place one shoe forward and the other backwards, which allows four pairs of women’s shoes on a 24ʺ long shelf. This placement will also let you see the shoe style and heel height at a glance. To better protect shoes, they can be placed in their original boxes or see-through plastic keepers. The same 24ʺ shelf will only fit three shoe or plastic boxes side-by-side,

take up more space than flat shelves because they are hung at an angle. This reduces the number of shoes that can be stored in the same space. Baskets for Flip-Flops It’s spring, and women love their flip-flops! Storing them in a pretty basket and clipping pairs together will save valuable space on your shoe shelves. The basket can fit on the floor or the top shelf of your closet. Shoe Cubbies Each side-by-side mini bin houses one pair of shoes. This makes for easy storage and minimizes dust. However, individual cubbies take up more closet space than dedicated shelving. If you have a small closet, opt for shelving. From high-heel shoes to your shirts, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design and install a custom closet that meets your individual needs… even on a shoestring budget! but they can be stacked two or three high. Slanted Shelves with Shoe Fence Slanted shelves with a low decorative rail in the front also keep shoes visible and organized and adds a decorative touch to a closet. However, if you have a large number of shoes and a small closet, slanted shelves

decisions. There will also be businesses there that will help them explore their needs as a couple living together well into the future. The Farragut Bridal Fair will offer an efficient way to review what is available in the West Knoxville marketplace. “We are pleased to have 28 vendors representing a variety of products at this inaugural event,” said Steve Krempasky, Shop Farragut organizer. “I think this is just the beginning of what we hope will become a spring tradition on this side of Knoxville.” Guests can check out gowns and tuxes, sample the caterers, plan the parties, find the right music, and search the jewelry. Additionally, there will be models showing off a wide range of wedding attire coordinated by Sherry Hovan of Lace and Glam Bridal Shop located in the West End

Shopping Center in Farragut. “We are delighted to make this trade show free to everyone,” stated Krempasky. “It is only possible through our major sponsors, including Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, All Occasions Party Rental, SouthEast Bank, The Venue at Lenoir City, and Laura Ash State Farm Agency. Our in-kind supporters will help make the event very festive and enjoyable, with music and decorations sponsored by Bellario’s Tailored Tuxedos and Above The Rest Balloon and Event Designs.” The Fair’s mission is to provide the opportunity to actually talk to event professionals and ask the questions that will make nuptial couples, and maybe even their parents, relaxed and comfortable as the special day approaches. “Our home was for sale for 16 months, with little interest from buyers,” said Kimberly. “Once we hired Surface Doc to come in and deep clean, we sold our property in just a few weeks!” What makes Surface Doc unique is their ability to clean most hard surfaces AND carpet, so you don’t need to call a separate specialist for each area. Unlike their competitor’s use of traditional carpet shampoo that simply drives dirt and bacteria into the carpet, Surface Doc has an entirely different process that uses eco-friendly emulsifiers, purified steam, and powerful suction - guaranteeing that your entire carpet structure is both cleaned and sanitized. “John and his crew cleaned my carpet, linoleum, walkways, bathrooms, kitchen, and the oil stains in the driveway,” said Kimberly. “I thought my carpet was fairly clean, although I knew there were some problem stains. I was very surprised to see how dirty it really was and the difference a restoration cleaning made. And my back patio and walkways literally glowed white after they were cleaned.” Kimberly was thrilled with the results and credits Surface Doc for the quick sale of her home. By offering cleaning and sealing of all

tiled surfaces and cleaning and sealing of all exterior hardscapes and concrete, as well as soft washing siding and roofs, Surface Doc really does do it all! If your house is on the market or soon will be, call Surface Doc to deep clean your interior and exterior surfaces to give buyers an overall great first impression. Let’s Take a Walk on the Clinch Avenue Viaduct I

F YOU HAVE spent time at World’s Fair Park, the Knoxville Convention Center, or the Knoxville Museum of Art, then you have probably walked across the Clinch Avenue Viaduct. A viaduct is a bridge that consists of a series of arches, piers, or columns that support a long elevated railway or road. The idea for the Clinch Avenue Viaduct began in 1905 when the City of Knoxville asked the L&N Railroad Company and the Southern Railroad Company to build a bridge across their tracks. The construction cost was to be paid by the two railroad companies along with the Knoxville Rail & Light Company. The Knoxville Rail & Light Company was included because they were going to provide the trolley tracks across the viaduct. In return, the City of Knoxville provided the right-of-way, paid for property damages, and removed a sewer line. The viaduct would provide the first direct route for the Fort Sanders neighborhood to downtown Knoxville. Bids for the design of the viaduct were accepted throughout the spring of 1905. Suggestions for a concrete bridge versus a steel one were made due to its durability and appearance. The final design contract was given to engineer Edwin Thatcher, a partner in the Concrete Steel Engineering Company of New York City. Nationally known, Thatcher is responsible for the

42

design of one other bridge in Tennessee, the Walnut Street Bridge in Chattanooga, built in 1890. The viaduct was constructed by The William J. Oliver Manufacturing Company. Oliver was a native of Indiana who had relocated his company to Knoxville in 1903. Throughout the years, his company was recognized as one of the largest in the South to manufacture railroad, mining, and construction equipment, as well as metal casting and foundry supplies. The company was also a noted expert in reinforced concrete. Oliver might be best known for submitting the lowest bid for the construction of the Panama Canal in 1907. The bid was initially accepted, but due to a conflict of interest, the bid was eventually awarded to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Construction on the viaduct started in the summer of 1905. It opened to pedestrian traffic in February 1906 and to vehicular traffic in June 1906. Streetcar line traffic was officially opened on Labor Day 1906. The bridge deck was initially designed for two lanes of vehicular traffic and two streetcar lines. The original viaduct was 757 feet in length with the final cost for the project coming in at $84,000. It contained 13 arch spans with a solid parapet railing, decorative raised quatrefoil design on both sides, and a raised decorative capital above each pier.

In 1929, the original design was altered to accommodate the widening of Henley Street; this added two more arch spans onto the eastern terminus and raised the bridge deck on the first three spans. In 1981, the Clinch Avenue Viaduct was closed to vehicular traffic and converted into a pedestrian bridge for the 1982 World’s Fair. Then in the summer of 2015, the viaduct received streetscape upgrades to improve the experience for pedestrians approaching World’s Fair Park and the Knoxville Convention Center. The next time you are downtown visiting the Convention Center or the Knoxville Museum of Art, take a stroll over the viaduct and walk across some Knoxville history!

TAA’s purpose is to promote and encourage public interest and enjoyment in art through the use of general communications media and to promote artistic talent and ability in art by sponsoring and directing exhibitions, awards, workshops, demonstrations, and educational programs. TAA provides the mutual benefit of association among members to elevate art to the highest standards of quality and workmanship. Membership is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Brian Horais: Not Everything (Turned on a Lathe) Has to be Round in the Display Case
Turning a round bowl is a skill many woodturners develop early in their careers, after which point many seek additional techniques to expand their skills and keep their creative energies alive. Off-Center (or Multi-Axis) turning offers such an opportunity, and this exhibition displays three variations of multi-axis turning: 3-axis Twist, Half Twist, and Therming. Brian Horais will display items turned on a lathe, as well as explanatory charts. Inspiration for these unique techniques comes from two well-known woodturners: Art Liestman and Barbara Dill.

Portrait Show by Booder Barnes on the North Wall
Booder Barnes moved from N e w Yo r k s t a t e to Tennessee 25 years ago. In New York, he studied oil painting with Larry Zingale. He joined A 1 L a bA r t s a f t e r moving to Knoxville and has been an active member throughout the years. Barnes took watercolor classes with Betsy Worden at the Candy Factory, and he studied handbuilding clay sculpture with Annamaria Gundlach. In 2011, he began making short films with University of Tennessee Professor Norman Magden, and they formed Magboo Productions to develop their ideas. For this exhibition, Booder Barnes has taken images of family and friends and portrayed them with paint as he imagined them cast as characters in a comic book or play.

Recent Works by Yvonne Hosey in the Atrium
Yvonne Hosey is an artist who works in a variety of media: Glasspaint, acrylic, watercolor, and scratchboard. She is inspired by her travels and blogs about them. This is her fourth exhibition at the Emporium, with the inaugural Glasslike Surfaces debuting in August 2016. She continues to explore glasspaint as a medium, as well as portraiture using friends and strangers she has observed.

The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Please note, the Emporium will be closed Monday, April 5. Visitors are required to wear masks and refrain from eating or drinking in the galleries. 6. Northrup Falls

Jamestown, TN - 1.5 hours from Knoxville Located in the Colditz Cove State Natural Area, these falls have been referred to as a “hidden gem” more than a few times! The loop trail is less than 1.5 miles but can get rocky as you approach the base of the falls. Staying to the left at the split keeps you from needing to climb over a few rocky outcroppings and leads to many miniature waterfalls along the way with the trail coming out behind Northrup Falls.

Sparta, TN - 2 hours from Knoxville Lo s t Cre e k St ate Natural Area is at the very northern end of Fall Creek Falls State Park, and the falls are an easy quarter mile “hike” from the parking lot. 1. Burgess Falls

Sparta, TN - 1.75 hours from Knoxville Located on the Falling Water River, this day-use park is noted for its natural beauty and four waterfalls that cascade down from over 250 feet in elevation. Burgess Falls is the last of these falls and the most spectacular, plunging more than 130 feet into the gorge. The falls can be seen from the overlook adjacent to the parking lot. There is also a 1.6 mile hike that goes along the edge between the parking area and the gorge that can be taken all the way down to the river. Because it is so accessible and has many picnic areas, Burgess Falls State Park can get very crowded on weekends and holidays. Photos cannot capture the size and the incredible amounts of rushing water that cascade over the edge of this very impressive waterfall!

4. Fall Creek & Cane Creek Falls

Pikeville, TN - 1.75 hours from Knoxville Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of the most visited parks in Tennessee with Fall Creek Falls claiming the highest water plunge east of the Mississippi at 256 feet. Look for the suspension bridge that leads to Overlook Loop Trail, then visit the Cane Creek Falls & Cascades Overlook that come in at a little less than half a mile out and back. The whole area is laced with cascades, gorges, waterfalls, and streams.

2. Twin Falls

Rock Island, TN - 2 hours from Knoxville These falls are the centerpiece of Rock Island State Park and can basically be seen at the end of the parking area. Although this view is pretty great, there is a wide, level trail that travels downstream so a front and center view of the falls is possible. Twin Falls is actually an “accidental” man-made waterfall that was created when the damn was put in.

OR THOSE OF us who are more than ready to get out of the house, go for a drive, and see that spring has indeed sprung, we have found twelve “road side” (or close to it!) waterfalls in our area that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family. Having been cooped up has been a challenge mentally and physically. We didn’t want to create any additional challenges in your life, so the majority of these waterfalls are less than a mile walk - some are at the end of the parking lot! Think of these as being more of a road side stop than a “hike” and get out there to explore our beautiful mountains in the one of the prettiest times of the year. So gas up the car, pack a snack or lunch, take plenty of water, some sturdy shoes, and maybe even the dog (check waterfall websites for guidelines) and head out!

Spring City, TN - 1.25 hours from Knoxville The first section of the trail is relatively flat with little elevation change until about half a mile in when the trail splits. Stay left to continue on to the falls overlook or go right to climb down (and don’t forget, back up!) to the base of the falls. Some call it the prettiest waterfall in Tennessee!

Wartburg, TN - 1 hour plus from Knoxville One of the nicest walks in Frozen Head State Park, the trail to Emory Gap Falls is a 2.5 mile out and back trail. After about a mile and a quarter, you’ll pass Debord Falls on your way to Emory Gap Falls at the end of the trail. This is a “heavily trafficked” trail with problematic parking when it’s busy so plan accordingly.

8. Triple Falls

Caryville, TN - Half an hour+ from Knoxville On Bruce Creek, this 1.8 out and back trail actually has Triple Falls - also known as Little Egypt Falls - near the beginning of the trail, so stop there or keep going for a little more challenging hike. Beautiful scenery such a short distance from Knoxville!

Bryson City, NC - 2.25 hours from Knoxville Access to the Falls is an easy 0.3 mile flat walk along GSMNP Deep Creek Trail from the trailhead located at the parking lot. This is one of the first trails constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Stop there and sit on the benches to enjoy the beauty or continue on to Indian Creek Falls about a half mile farther down the trail.

12. Hooker Falls

Penrose, NC - 2.5 hours from Knoxville Located in the Dupont State Forest, Hooker Falls isn’t that impressive in terms of height, but the Little River at this point is pretty wide, which makes for a really nice setting. There is an overlook at the top of the falls, but walk just a few yards down the trail (a little more than half a mile total) to get directly in front of the falls.

When We Work Together, We All Win T

Business Note

BY BRETT CAFFERTY

HERE IS a definite air of optimism in the small business community. After an entire year of shut-downs, limited capacities, new ways of conducting business, and interacting (while avoiding) each other, it’s refreshing to hear that business is picking up! Spring events are being planned, and expectations of gathering with friends and family, combined with the nicer weather, makes for a welcome change! An example of this enthusiasm was evident during a recent meeting of the Sweetwater Main Street Board, comprised of local businesses, property owners, and City of Sweetwater staff. The level of participation and cooperative spirit was impressive! They work together to plan and support awareness of the unique businesses in town with Main Street First Friday, Takeout Tuesdays to support local restaurants, and collaborate on creative ideas to bring people and businesses together.

The recently announced the Blooms, Bluegrass & BBQ Festival is set for next month and is sure to be a hit! (See their ad on our inside front cover.) Perhaps it’s the smaller town perspective of knowing your neighbors. Observing the goodwill and positive outlooks present at that meeting reminded me of the significant value and benefit that can be realized by being involved within your community. This was reinforced in a subsequent visit to Sweetwater when I spoke with several local business owners who confirmed that my initial impressions were accurate. The City of Sweetwater does an excellent job of encouraging and helping their local businesses to thrive, the business owners recognize they are valued and heard, and the entire community benefits. An observation from Main Street, USA, just down the road, and an encouraging reminder that working together, works.

EVOLVE

Non-Invasive Contouring Treatment

L

OOKING FOR a non-invasive way to tighten loose skin, enhance muscle tone, smooth cellulite, and contour your body? If so, it’s time to Evolve. Evolve by Inmode is here to help you tone and tighten - all without an invasive procedure and with minimal downtime. Evolve by Inmode offers non-surgical body contouring through its three different procedures: Evolve Tite, Evolve Trim, and Evolve Tone. All three Evolve procedures are now available at Southeastern Dermatology. Learn more about this exciting new non-invasive, thermal skin and body treatment. What is Evolve Technology? Evolve Tite and Evolve Trim both rely on the same basic technology to give you the results you want to shape and smooth your body. Evolve technology relies on radio frequency (RF) energy to deliver heat and results. When applied by skilled medical professionals - like Dr. Doppelt and his staff - the RF energy in Evolve by Inmode can deliver target fat reduction, skin tightening and cellulite reduction. Evolve can be used in many areas of the body. In fact, you might be able to target multiple body areas during a single session. Areas of the body that respond well to Evolve technology include: • Abdomen • Arms • Hips • Thighs • Waist and flank Evolve by Inmode comes in three different treatments: Evolve Tite, Evolve Trim, and Evolve Tone. While Evolve Tite and Evolve Trim rely on RF technology, Evolve Tone uses electromagnetic technology. Evolve Tite Evolve Tite remodels the skin by tightening loose or sagging areas. It is a non-invasive procedure that can be done in Dr. Doppelt’s office during a lunch break. This quick and easy procedure can be customized to meet your specific concerns. It can treat loose skin on the tummy after pregnancy or weight loss, loose skin on the upper arms, and other trouble spots. The Evolve Tite treatment is delivered via a hands-free applicator. Applicators can be applied to multiple body areas at once. The Evolve Tite procedure was developed under very strict medical guidelines and has been

optimized to provide maximum results, even when multiple areas are targeted. Evolve Tite works by using radiofrequency technology to apply volumetric heat to the skin’s subdermal layers. The radiofrequency technology ensures the heat is delivered uniformly, so no area of the application area is over or under treated. How do you know if you’re a good candidate for Evolve Tite? Evolve Tite is recommended for anyone who seeks natural-looking skin remodeling. It can give skin a tighter, more youthful appearance. It is also important to know that there is no downtime or recovery period with Evolve Tite. The procedure is quick and painless, and you can return to regular activities immediately. Dr. Doppelt and his staff can tell you how many Evolve Tite treatments you’ll need to achieve your aesthetic goals. Evolve Trim While Evolve Tite targets loose and sagging skin, Evolve Trim targets dimpled skin and cellulite. Evolve Trim offers a unique solution to a common problem and provides a noninvasive alternative to liposuction. This treatment will help reshape the body and smooth the appearance of the skin. Evolve Trim is delivered by a medical professional with a hands-free applicator. Multiple body areas can be targeted at once. Evolve Trim can be used to provide a slimmer, smoother appearance to the: • Back • Abdomen • Arms • Knees • Thighs • And other areas of the body The Evolve Trim treatment works by using radiofrequency technology to apply volumetric heat deep into the skin’s subdermal layers. The heat is combined with a vacuum and controlled energy pulses to deliver uniform results across the treatment area. Because the heat is delivered to the subdermal layers of the skin with RF energy, the patient experiences no discomfort or

burning sensations. The treatment requires no downtime and you may return to regular activities immediately after treatment. You might need multiple Evolve Trim treatments to achieve your aesthetic goals. Dr. Doppelt can help you develop a treatment plan to give you the results you want without pain or downtime. You will see visible results as soon as your first few sessions. Evolve Tone Sometimes you don’t get the results you want no matter how many reps you do in the gym or miles you log running on the road. If you’re seeking to tighten and tone your body and muscles, Evolve Tone might be the answer. Evolve Tone can add definition and enhance your natural physique. It is a non-invasive treatment that requires no downtime and won’t leave you with unsightly scars. Evolve Tone can increase muscle strength and tone. Evolve Tone relies on a different technology than Evolve Tite or Evolve Trim. Evolve Tone uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate the muscles and cause involuntary contractions. Your muscles contract in a way that replicates a workout - sweat not required. The treatment can be used on many areas of the body, including: • Abdomen • Flanks • Buttocks Like other Evolve treatments, Evolve Tone is painless and involves no downtime. The number of sessions required depends on your goals and can be determined by Dr. Doppelt. Are you ready to take a step toward a more youthful appearance? Tighten up, smooth it out, and tone it up with Evolve treatments at Southeastern Dermatology. No matter whether you choose Evolve Tite, Evolve Trim, or Evolve Tone, we can provide a customized treatment plan to help you reach your aesthetic goals. Contact us today at 865-474-8800 to schedule a consultation and Evolve into your best body yet.
