IKAP Independent Knoxville Area Publishers
From the Publisher You’ve heard the old saying that “April showers bring May flowers,” and there are some flowers that have already bloomed. But my favorite spring blooms are still to come. April brings the blossoming of the cherry trees, magnolias, and, of course, the dogwoods. In the Knoxville area, April is dedicated to the dogwoods, celebrating those blooms with a month-long festival. Activities for this year’s Dogwood Arts Festival are included in this edition. With the coming of spring, the focus is on indoor and outdoor cleanup, and this month our advertisers offer a variety of products, services, and tips to make home cleanup and spruce up almost painless. One spring cleanup that doesn’t involve the home is the one done for 4

AUTO WASH
SIMPLY EAST TENNESSEE’S BEST CAR WASH
Walking into a room full of friends, Brian Davis voiced his dissatisfaction with the car wash he had just visited. “Half the dirt was still on my vehicle, and, worse yet, the people who hand dried my truck did nothing about it,” he said. Brian’s friends, having heard him complain about the poor service levels at area auto washes before, offered him a challenge. If he didn’t like the service he was receiving, then start his own car wash. Sort of, put up or shut up. Brian accepted their challenge and launched Synergy Auto Wash in mid 2012.

Brian Davis
EK: So Synergy Auto Wash was in fact launched in response to a challenge from a group of friends? Brian: That and the simple idea that I like to keep my car clean, and there is no place in town that meets my expectations no matter what package I purchase, and I don’t have time to clean it myself. EK: So you put your skills as a general contractor to use in converting a former conventional auto wash into Synergy Auto Wash’s all-new wash system? Brian: Yes, due to having a construction background, I had an initial vision as to what I thought was not only the perfect car wash, but also a beautiful place where people can come and be comfortable. EK: Synergy Auto Wash still uses the typical “tunnel” that most automobile owners are familiar with. What’s different? Brian: Although we use a conveyor system like most car washes in the country, initial looks may be deceiving. First off, our conveyor is a state-of-the-art, low profile conveyor that allows us to wash many vehicles that other washes can’t get on their conveyor. Secondly, once you enter our conveyor, you’ll discover what makes Synergy Auto Wash unique. You won’t find all those mitters, side brushes, and wraps spinning down and around the car in front of you. We have replaced all of this equipment with individuals that literally hand wash your vehicle as it makes its way down the conveyor. No equipment comes in contact with your vehicle.
Jolene Davis
EK: Why is it important that no automated equipment touch your car? Brian: Since we have no equipment that comes in contact with your vehicle, we can proudly say that we have virtually no damage in our tunnel. Secondly, I can’t imagine anyone feeling comfortable watching mitters, side brushes, and wraps spinning down the vehicle in front of you, removing all their dirt and then immediately coming down the sides of your vehicle as it continues down the tunnel. Or what about that truck bed a few cars in front of you that the mitters reach into and then run up your hood and the top of your vehicle? The dirt and grime from the vehicle ahead of you, which adheres to all of this equipment, can damage your car’s finish. Honestly, when you have the choice to have your car hand washed or machine washed, it’s a no brainer. EK: Synergy Auto Wash is also a family affair. Explain your mother’s role. Brian: This has proven to be the best reward after making the decision to open this facility. In this economy, it was a huge risk to open a small business, but who gets to work with their mother day in and day out? Life can be busy sometimes, and we often don’t get the opportunity to spend as much time as we
would like with our loved ones. I get the luxury of waking up every day knowing I get to spend most of the day around my mother. On another note, my mom has become the glue of this business. It is amazing how many people come in just to see her. No matter what day or how busy we are, you will never walk in the lobby and not see a smile on her face. She loves this place so much that even though she loves to travel to Charlotte to see her grandchildren, I generally get a phone call every time: “I miss the car wash… you better not replace me while I’m gone.” EK: What other services do you offer at Synergy Auto Wash? Brian: To make things easy for our customers, we’ve initially put together a simple menu. We have four basic washes that range from $8–$24. If you find yourself in need of additional services or you’re in the mood to pamper yourself, we have an A La Carte menu that consists of things such as buff wax, carpet shampoo, clean and condition leather, dash, door panels, and console protectant, and other things to keep your vehicle looking good and protected. EK: What else would you like our readers to know about Synergy Auto Wash? Brian: We are building this business on three principles: 1. We offer a full-service wash facility concept that nobody else in the southeast offers, nor can compete with, and we offer it at a price unavailable elsewhere. 2. With the help of our manager, Jimmy Stewart, my mom, Jolene Davis, and myself, we take so much pride in our customer service and guarantee it to be the best in town. 3. We are committed to delivering the best quality wash available. If you aren’t satisfied, then your wash is free. EK: You said that once someone tried
Synergy Auto Wash, you had a customer for life. Why? Brian: It is amazing to hear all the positive comments day in and day out. We have people that drive from Halls, Maryville, Rockwood, Kingston, Oak Ridge, and Fountain City to take advantage of what we offer. Once we see someone for the first time, it is only a matter of days or weeks before we see them again. We are hand washing vehicles, our customer service is amazing, and I am an owner/operator working as hard and side-by-side by our amazing associates. For these reasons and many more, it is all about people being aware that we are here and their willingness to give us an opportunity to demonstrate just why we believe we are East Tennessee’s best car wash. EK: Are there any new services you plan on offering in the future? Brian: Due to the fact that I spent two years researching the car wash industry while traveling to hundreds of car washes across the country, our menu will likely remain unchanged for the present, but we are receptive to adding new services should our customers ask for them. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Brian: If someone asked me “Why should I try Synergy Auto Wash?” I would say this: We are a family-run, small business that excels in customer service and quality. We hand wash every vehicle in the safest possible environment, and all at a price competitive to our competition. Won’t you give us a try? Protect your investment and your car’s finish.

Here are just a couple of tips we hope you will find helpful – tips designed to give you the rich and luxurious hair that you’ve always strived for. Tip #1: Shampoo your roots, condition your ends. Use a high-quality shampoo that is tailored to your scalp and hair needs and won’t strip your color. Oftentimes two “baby” shampoos are needed to remove all excess dirt and thoroughly cleanse the scalp. There is no need to condition your roots, because the scalp produces oils that are naturally conditioning. Tip #2: Make sure you have the proper heat tools for at-home use. Be sure your blow dryer has a “warm” option for reduced heat drying and your heat irons have a temperature gauge. Most tools get far too hot and can cause melting and burning of the hair, not to mention chronic split ends. To discover your full potential and to look and feel your very best, you are invited to discover for yourself just how Alchemy Salon can help you turn the ordinary salon experience into the extraordinary experience.

What is Keeping You Up at Night? If you are anything like me, it seems like the world is moving at breakneck speed, and it is hard to keep up with the daily demands of life, much less ponder your and your family’s financial future. That is, until your head hits the pillow and the house is quiet. Then the uncertainties start to swirl in your mind:
» Will I have enough money to send my kids to college? » Will we have enough money to live on if I or my husband can’t work because we get seriously injured? » Am I investing enough for retirement? » Is my “nest egg” invested wisely? What if I run out of money after I retire? » Should I buy long term care insurance? It seems expensive, but is it worth it? » What will I do if my spouse dies? Do we even have enough life insurance? It’s a small miracle you get any sleep! But these are just a few of the nagging questions most of us ask ourselves on a frequent basis before our fast-paced lives push them to the back burner once again. The solution, though, is easier, faster, and less expensive than you might think. At Marsh Professional Group, we have created a process we call building your

It reflects your complete financial world – bank accounts, investments, debts, insurance policies, retirement plans, wills, and estate planning documents, just to name a few. Not only does it allow you to keep track of how you are doing, but just imagine what a relief it would be to a surviving spouse or adult children to have all of this information gathered in one spot and up to date. We also provide a Survivor’s Checklist as an invaluable tool to help with the many financial decisions that must be made at the loss of a loved one. Truly, building your “Financial Foundation” is an absolute necessity that no individual, couple, or family should live without. To learn more, I encourage you to call me today. TRAVEL TENNESSEE :
The Great Smoky Mountains With the coming of spring and summer, thoughts turn toward vacation destinations, and this year, consider placing the Great Smoky Mountains on your travel list. Those of us that call East Tennessee our home have this national treasure right in our backyard, and we invite visitors to our region to come and explore America’s most visited park with all its plant and animal diversity and remnants of the Southern Appalachian culture.
History
Great Smoky Mountains National Park preserves a rich cultural tapestry of Southern Appalachian history. The mountains have had a long human history spanning thousands of years – from the prehistoric Paleo Indians and early European settlement in the 1800s to loggers and Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees in the 20th century. The park strives to protect the historic structures, landscapes, and artifacts that tell the varied stories of people who once called these mountains home. Founding the Great Smoky Mountains National Park took the dedicated efforts of numerous individuals and groups. Most of the hard working supporters were based in Knoxville and Asheville, North Carolina. The park was formally dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in September 1940. He spoke from the Rockefeller Monument at Newfound Gap astride the Tennessee – North Carolina state line. That ceremony dedicated a sanctuary that is not a local park, a county park, or even a state park, but a national park for all the people of the country and the rest of the world to enjoy. Nature & Science
Biological diversity is the hallmark of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which encompasses more than 800 square miles in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. No other area of equal size in a temperate climate can match the park’s amazing diversity of plants, animals, and invertebrates. More than 17,000 species have been documented in the park. Scientists believe an additional 30,000-80,000 species may live here. The Great Smoky Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the world, formed perhaps 200-300 million years ago. They are unique in their northeast to southwest orientation, which allowed species to migrate along their slopes during climatic changes such as the last ice age 10,000 years ago. In fact, the glaciers of the last ice age affected the Smoky Mountains without invading them. During that time, glaciers scoured much of North America but did not quite reach as far south as the Smokies. Consequently, these mountains became a refuge for many species of plants and animals that were disrupted from their northern homes. The Smokies have been relatively undisturbed by glaciers or ocean inundation for more than a million years, allowing species eons From black bears to salamanders, to diversify. old-growth forests to spring In terms of weather, the park’s abundant wildflowers, log cabins to grist rainfall and high summertime humidity mills, the park offers a myriad of provide excellent growing conditions. Doors, which have been in use for at least 5,000 years, come in many styles: interior doors, exterior doors, front doors, back doors, side doors, patio doors, French doors, Dutch doors, pocket doors, sliding doors, attic doors, and so on. I sometimes think, with our busy day-to-day schedule, we simply take a good door for granted. We open, close, push, bump, slam, hit, and even kick them and still expect them to keep us safe from intruders, protected from the elements and creepycrawly things, and provide us with a little privacy inside our home. Art Market Gallery’s Annual Members’ Silent Auction
Lifestyle
Now in its 31st year, the Art Market Gallery is among the oldest artists’ cooperatives in the southeast.
The gallery’s Annual Members’ Silent Auction is a Dogwood Arts Festival Featured Event. A popular silent auction, offering original fine art and crafts by the gallery’s professional regional artists and artisans, gives art lovers a chance to purchase works at a fraction of their value. This year there will be a longer bidding period, to run April 5-28, with up to 60 works, ranging from jewelry and pottery to paintings and fiber. The Art Market Gallery also will present an exhibit of recent works by two of its member artists: painter and printmaker Gay Davis Bryant and wood-turner Janis Proffitt, both of Knoxville. A recently retired community college professor, Gay has also worked as a studio artist for the last 20 years and teaches regionally. While celebrating traditional skills and craftsmanship, Gay brings the viewer into familiar scenes of East Tennessee’s rich landscape with her watercolors and acrylic paintings and through use of relief-printmaking techniques such as woodcuts, linoleum blocks, and composite materials. The featured body of work for this show is called “Gatherings.” Woodworking has been in Janis’ family for generations, dating back to Sevier County’s first settlers. She grew up helping her father in his woodshop in the mountains of Pittman-Center, later teaching herself pyrography (wood burning), which she incorporated into her wood-turnings. Janis works as a full-time craft artist with her sister in that same woodshop. Her artisanship, which was featured on WBIR’s “The Heartland Series,” blends traditional Appalachia turning with contemporary design. A First Friday opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 5:30 to 9 pm on Friday, April 5, with complimentary refreshments and live folk and “new grass” music by Molly Rochelson. The reception also opens bidding for the Annual Members’ Silent Auction, and many member artists will be on hand to meet and mingle with visitors. Owned and operated by more than 60 regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 South Gay Street, next to the Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Art Market Gallery

An Evening of GOOD Behavior with HABIT Human Animal Bond In Tennessee Fundraiser
In addition to the 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, and 35% brackets, we now have a 39.6% top bracket for individuals with incomes greater than $400,000 and married joint filers with incomes exceeding $450,000.1,2
Knoxville Museum of Art
Federal income tax brackets were altered.
A health care surtax kicked in for high earners. In 2013, a 3.8% Medicare surtax will be
levied on the lesser of either a) net investment income or b) the amount of MAGI exceeding $200,000 for single filers, $250,000 for couples filing jointly, and $125,000 for spouses filing separately.3 The Medicare payroll tax also rises 0.9% for employees after their MAGIs exceed the $200,000 individual or $250,000 married thresholds this year.3
Federal estate tax laws were modified.
Estate taxes have risen; we now have a 40% top estate tax rate and a $5.25 million individual exemption (which is indexed for inflation). 1,4 Any unused portion of a $5.25 million individual exemption may be transferred to the surviving spouse at the death of the first spouse.4
Taxes on investment income are higher for the wealthy. Capital gains and dividend taxes
are 15% for filers in the 25%–35% brackets. Those in the 39.6% will pay 20%.4
IRA charitable rollovers have returned.
For IRA owners 70 1/2 or older in 2013, you may arrange an IRA charitable rollover of up to $100,000 this year. Ask your IRA custodian to send the donation directly to the charity or qualified non-profit organization. You can subtract the gift from your adjusted gross income, and the donation counts toward your RMD.5
Roth conversion rules were expanded for workplace retirement plans. It is now easier
to make an in-plan Roth rollover inside your 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) plan. The conversion is permissible at any age and may include all pre-tax salary deferrals. Any account balance converted is included in the taxpayer’s income in the year of the Roth conversion.6,7

Spring Makeover
S
pring is the
time most of us have been waiting for. It’s a time to increase our activity level and shed those bulky sweaters and heavy coats. What was easy to hide in the winter may not be a bit more obvious in the spring. It’s time to get outdoors and get some exercise as well as making a few healthier changes in your diet to a newer you. Here are some helpful tips to get you started. Depending upon whether you prefer raw or cooked food, the following helpful tips are a good way to get you started. Hot oatmeal topped with almonds has staying power and eliminates the mid-morning munchies. Oatmeal has onefifth the calorie density of dried cereal, with oatmeal containing 300 calories per pound and dried cereal having 1,400 to 2,000 calories per pound. That’s a huge difference. Gluten-free oatmeal is available if gluten sensitivity is a concern. For a bonus, add cinnamon to your oatmeal to help lower your cholesterol. If raw is your preference, then smoothies are the way to go to start your day. Combine fruits, almond milk, ice, and spinach to make a quick, satisfying, and energizing drink. This drink may not sound like the most flavorful, but be prepared to be surprised by how delicious it is. It’s important to eat as many veggies as you can. This is the category of foods that give you the most nutrition with the least amount of calories. Watch for high glycemic index of carrots and beets, however. These vegetables supply good nutrition, but over-eating them may result in higher sugar consumption. This actually doesn’t present a problem if you’re consuming carrots and beets with other vegetables. Eating a variety of root vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, spinach, arugala, radishes, and others has been shown to supply rich nutrients as well as lower calorie intake in a meal. Research has shown that eating three cups of a raw salad before lunch has lowered the consumption of calories
for that meal by 12%. “Think before you eat” should be a spring motto. Speaking of thinking… this spring, think green. Green tea wins the prize for the most mentioned beneficial drink. Studies have shown not only the powerful antioxidant effects of green tea, but also its ability to stimulate the body to burn calories as well. As an added bonus, green tea contains anti-inflammatory
and anti-cancer properties as well, which go a long way to making this the number one drink for spring. Look for a mixture of green teas with different flavors like mango, mint, and orange for variety and great tastes. Spring is the time of year to think before you eat. As we shed those extra clothes to expose what’s underneath, it’s time to shed those extra pounds that most of us have accumulated in the winter. It’s time to go outdoors to increase our activity levels, step up to the plate for more veggies, start our day with filling foods that have staying power, and drink fat burning green teas for a healthier and better you. It’s time for a spring makeover, and with these few healthy tips, you will be on your way to a new you. Note: Consult your healthcare professional
before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

very parent is concerned about leaving their four-legged kid behind when they’re on vacation or traveling for business. Consider the personality of your dog in evaluating the boarding desires of your dog. Does your dog enjoy the company of other dogs, is he active, does he like to romp and play? If so, an environment where he has social, interactive playtime but also has private time to get away while eating and sleeping will be your best option. Some dogs are low key. They prefer just hanging out with their owners and don’t really care for other dogs. These dogs should be allowed individual or family only time, stretching their legs and getting fresh air by themselves. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits addresses the desires of
all types of dogs. JeanAnn Carrigan, owner at Ms. C’s, states, “Dogs are just like people. They enjoy being outside, getting fresh air and exercise. Being outdoors this time of year especially makes the heart feel good, so we design play schedules based on the individual preferences of our guests.” At Ms. C’s, sociable dogs are paired together based on personality types, and more recluse dogs have individual playtimes. Ms. C’s is an all-inclusive/ all-suites resort, never adding additional charges for playtime, socializing, bedtime tuck-ins, special diet preparation, or medical administration. Call for your tour and reservation today, and enjoy your vacation when your four-legged kids enjoy theirs.

Big Bank Services with the Community Bank Experience
While both residential and business clients
demand all of the services of a large bank, they nevertheless also want that community bank touch that the national and regional banks are no longer able to provide. “We’re unique,” states American Trust Bank of East Tennessee Assistant Vice President, Jan Waldroop. “The level of technology we make available to all of our clients is truly amazing. We offer residential and business clients the same services they would expect from a much larger bank, but we still offer that community bank touch that they might have thought was a thing of the past.” The American Trust Bank of East Tennessee experience is truly unique. Start with online Assistant Vice President and mobile banking Jan Waldroop for busy people on the go, plus the ability to make deposits anywhere, anytime. Or how about the ability for businesses to deposit customer checks electronically, with same-day deposits credited by 8 pm? They also offer complete payroll services. These, and a long list of other comprehensive services, are just a few of the reasons people and businesses put their trust in American Trust Bank of East Tennessee. “Our customers know each of us by name,” says Jan. “They know they can get the information they need, and when they sit down with us to discuss business, they know they are speaking with the decision maker. With a few exceptions, our associates have been given the authority to make decisions locally, and our customers really appreciate that.” American Trust Bank of East Tennessee is unique for another reason as well. Like any business who desires to succeed, American Trust Bank has a commitment to build their success on the success of their customers. To learn how to experience big bank services while discovering a community bank touch, call Jan at 865588-1500, or visit her at American Trust Bank of East Tennessee at 5426 Homberg Drive in Knoxville.

Having Trouble Losing Weight?
S
pring is here, and bathing
suit season is just around the corner. Here are a few things you can do to lose weight and feel great in time for pool time fun or your annual beach trip. Sometimes it’s difficult to lose weight, because your body is loaded with toxins and your metabolism is damaged. Toxins are stored in our fat cells, but don’t fret. There are six easy steps to get that bod back on track. 1) Dump the soda (even diet) and go for the H2O! Trust me, just do it! 2) Clean up your diet, don’t go on a diet! A balanced diet of healthy proteins, carbs, and fats is the way to go. 3) Start moving! Get your cardio in at least 20-30 minutes, three days a week.
Free t-shirt and Weight loss Consultation included

4) Muscle drives the metabolic rate, so try weight training for 30-40 minutes, two to three days a week.
5) Try to go to bed and rise at the same time every day. Sleep controls your hormone levels and will make weight loss much easier, so seven to eight hours is a must. 6) Tr y Far Infrared massage therapy to help you melt fat, allowing the toxins to be excreted more quickly. The Far Infrared heat along with the massage action releases the toxins in your fat cells and can speed metabolic rate. Also, as much as 300-1,200 calories per session are used up! Visit our Bearden location for a free session. When you join Workout Anytime in Bearden, which is locally owned and operated by my husband, Kurt, and I, you’ll have access to 30+ clubs in the southeast. You can’t beat that!

Josie Sibold will once again bring her fabulous concrete garden art. Don’t forget

When you purchase a plant at the Talahi Plant Sale, you’re making your garden and the community a more beautiful place to live! More than $250,000 has been given back to the community throughout the past 10 years of this event. Proceeds from last year’s sale benefitted more than 15 community and education projects, including Blount Mansion, Childhelp of East TN, Dogwood Arts Festival, Friends of the UT Gardens, Ijams Nature Center, Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum, Knox Youth Sports, Legacy Parks Foundation, Old Gray Cemetery, Random Acts of Flowers, and the Salvation Army. Frequent Spring Allergy Questions Answered pring is in the air– and that
means pollen, mold spores, and other airborne allergens are going to bring on sneezing and wheezing for an estimated 40 to 50 million Americans. The spring season can be especially bothersome with so much conflicting information on how to find relief. To help you better understand spring allergies and combat symptoms this sneezing season, the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) has answered some of the most frequently asked questions.
1 ›› Why does it seem like more and more people have spring allergies?
This is likely due to increased awareness and more people taking the steps to being properly tested and diagnosed. According to a recent study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, pollen counts are gradually increasing every year, which can cause heightened symptoms.
2 ›› Do spring allergy symptoms only last during the spring months?
The length of the season can help determine the severity of symptoms. For many areas of the country, spring allergies begin in February and last until the early summer. Mild winter temperatures can cause plants to pollenate early. A rainy spring can also promote rapid plant growth and lead to an increase in mold, causing symptoms to last well into the fall months. Allergists recommend starting medications to alleviate symptoms two weeks before they begin. If you have a history of prior seasonal problems, start your medication at the first sign of any symptoms.
3 ›› Will eating local honey cure allergies?
A common myth is that eating a spoonful of local honey a day can build allergy immunity. The idea is that bees pick up pollen spores from flowers, transfer them to their honey, and help you better tolerate pollen. Seasonal allergies are usually triggered by windborne pollen, not pollen spread by insects. There is no scientific evidence that honey will provide any benefit or reduce allergy symptoms. Your best bet? Talk to your allergist about ways to avoid allergy triggers, the best medications to treat symptoms, and whether immunotherapy (allergy shots) could be beneficial.
4 ›› Is there such a thing as spring asthma?
Allergies and asthma are often worse during different times of the year due to environmental allergens. An estimated 75-85% of asthma patients have allergies. These allergic responses in the lung can lead to symptoms of asthma. If you have spring allergies, this can be why you have more asthma symptoms during the season. Those that believe they may have symptoms of nasal allergy or asthma can find a free screening program in their area by visiting www.acaai.org/nasp.
According to a recent study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, pollen counts are gradually increasing every year, which can cause heightened symptoms. 5 ›› Can you suddenly develop seasonal allergies in adulthood?
Yes. Although allergies are common in children, they can occur at any time and any age. Sometimes allergies go away, but they also can come back years later. If you suspect you have an allergy, you should keep track of your symptoms and see an allergist to find relief. Allergies and asthma are serious diseases during every season of the year and that’s nothing to sneeze at. Misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment can be dangerous. To learn more about these conditions and locate an allergist in your area, visit www. AllergyAndAsthmaRelief.org. April 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Spring and Summer’s Hottest Trend – The Tunic casual look, or just enjoy the comfort and ease a tunic brings to your wardrobe. Looking best when worn with slim fitting pants, jeans, or leggings, tunics are here to stay! Few fashion trends have held on as long as they have, dating back to ancient Roman days. Remember, tunic tops are flexible because they can cover imperfections in a figure if worn loosely or accentuate a figure when worn tighter to the body. Both styles are worn by fashion-conscious women throughout the world. The Lily Pad has the largest selection of tunic tops in the area, and we are happy to give you a tour of the store and which tunics would look best on your body type!
unic tops are one of the hottest fashion trends for the coming season, and with good reason... few articles of clothing are as versatile as the tunic! Tunics are essentially longer tops that extend below the waistline; some are literally as long as a dress, while others may extend slightly below the waist or to where the thigh starts to narrow. They’re a must-have if you’re traveling... because of their length, you may choose to use a tunic in many different ways. When NEEDTOBREATHE’s Bear and Bo Rinehart set out to write the songs that appear on the band’s new album, “The Reckoning,” they felt something bigger awaited them. With their reputation as a must-see live act built from non-stop touring, the Rinehart brothers, pastor’s sons who hail from the rural South Carolina town of Possum Kingdom, along
with drummer Joe Stillwell and bass player Seth Bolt, were determined to create a statement-making album that truly captured the magic behind this genuinely appealing rock band and oh did they ever. For more information, visit needto breathe.net or www.tennessee theatre.com

Consignment Success Tips
How to get the biggest bang for your buck! onsignment shopping has been growing in popularity for a number of years, and there is money to be made by you! Here are a few thoughts on how to make the most of your experience. Before you decide to consign, check your closet for merchandise you no longer wear. Ask yourself, would I want to buy this NOW? If not, it might be a better use of your time and effort to offer your items at a garage sale or donate to charity. The condition of any item is a top priority for every consignment store, and the original purchase date is also a key point. You may have a terrific suit with the original tags, but if you bought it 10 years ago, today’s savvy consignment customer (and likely the consignment store, too) will pass it by.
Before you visit your consignment store, check your items closely for any defects. A “pull here” or “snag there” reduces your chance for success. Make sure your items are clean, and this includes dry cleaning if applicable. Merchandise should be pressed and on hangers. Presentation is very important. Customers will pay top dollar for your efforts. Lose any emotional attachment. If you love it, just keep it.
7. Bring more for the store to review (minimum 20 items); otherwise, ensure your items are flawless (no missing buttons, no stains, etc.) and clean, pressed, and ready to sell. 8. Be prepared to accept the truth about what your merchandise is worth to someone else. 9. At Next To New, we advertise our store online, via commercials (local and cable), magazines, and email. 10. We strive to sell your things and make you the most money possible.
Here are the top 10 tips for a successful venture in consignment:
After all, and at the very least, your closet now has some breathing room! Come see us soon at Next To New! We will make every effort to ensure your venture into consignment is a resounding success!
1. Check out Next To New. We carry all major mall brands (Chicos, Ann Taylor, Coldwater Creek) and all Boutique Designers. 2. Pay attention to the brands the store carries, and “marry” your goods to the store’s established consumer base. 3. Consign items in season. 4. Consign best-selling sizes. For women, it’s sizes 10-16. 5. Consign designer goods in any size. 6. Consign popular brands today or classic brands that stand the test of time.

t’s widely known that an organization can only be as strong as its volunteers, amongst them, the Board of Directors. A strong board usually results in a strong organization and vice-versa. Proudly, Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) has been blessed during the course of its existence to have a long list of strong community representatives who remain engaged and active in the decisions, operations, and vision of the organization. As a result, RAF has grown exponentially during the course of the last four years, bringing smiles to more than 20,000 people in the Knoxville community. Without these individuals’ support, it simply would not have been possible. A Board of Directors is defined as being a body of individuals who oversee the activities of an organization. RAF’s board is no different in that they do provide oversight, guidance, and support for the organization

In addition, massage aids the body in the elimination of toxins. Controlled studies of the benefits of massage produced impressive results: • A particular group of medical school students who were massaged before an exam showed a significant decrease in anxiety and respiratory rates as well as a significant increase in white blood cells and natural killer cell activity, suggesting a benefit to the immune system. • Office workers massaged regularly were more alert, performed better, and were less stressed. • Premature infants who were massaged gained more weight.

Stolen Tax Documents
Your tax forms contain a wealth of personal information. Important documents such as W-2s and interest statements begin to arrive in the mail in January. Theft of these forms could be disastrous. If you don’t already have one, consider investing in a locking mailbox or renting a secure post office box. Avoid leaving incoming mail sitting in your mailbox for any length of time, and always take outgoing mail directly to your local post office branch.
Unsecured Documents
Once you’ve retrieved these documents from the mailbox, don’t let security lag. Never leave sensitive documents lying around in plain sight in your vehicle, home, or workplace. Keep documents in a locked safe or file cabinet. 34

Phishing Scams
Identity thieves often prey on tax-time anxiety by sending emails or making phone calls that purport to be from the IRS or other federal agency. These tactics are designed to bilk you out of sensitive information. It’s simple to avoid these scams: ignore all such communications. The IRS uses good old-fashioned snail mail – never email, text messages, or phone calls – to communicate with taxpayers. If you suspect you’re being scammed by someone posing as an IRS representative, report the incident to the IRS by forwarding suspicious emails to phish ing@irs.gov.
owe or anticipate a refund, plan to do your own taxes or pay a professional to do them for you, preparing and filing your taxes can be a tedious task. It can also be a risky one: the information needed to prepare your taxes is a treasure trove for enterprising identity thieves. For identity thieves, tax time is a prime time of opportunity. Forms such as W-2s and IRS tax forms usually include your Social Security number, name, address, and often financial account information, the ITRC notes. Using that information, identity thieves can access your existing financial accounts, open new lines of credit, and commit other acts of fraud. It’s important to keep identity protection front-of-mind during tax preparation season. Take steps to protect yourself against these six common identity theft risks during tax time.
Disorganized CPA
You hire a tax preparer to help ensure you get the maximum return or minimum payment and that you don’t run afoul of complex tax laws. Yet your tax preparer can cause you problems if he or she fails to properly safeguard your documents. Be cautious when hiring a tax preparer – only work with someone you know or whose reputation you’ve investigated. Ask who will have access to your documents and how your preparer will keep your forms and information secure.
Be cautious when hiring a tax preparer – only work with someone you know or whose reputation you’ve investigated. Inadequate Storage
Everyone knows you have to hold on to tax documents. In most cases, you should keep tax returns and supporting documents for at least three years from the date of filing. Keep forms in a secure, locked location, or store them digitally in password protected files. When it’s time to dispose of documents, shred them with a cross-cut shredder before getting rid of them.
Failing to Monitor Your Identity
Keeping an eye on your credit and financial accounts is the single most proactive step you can take to protect your identity at tax time and throughout the year. Check your credit report before and after tax season and several times throughout the year. Consider enrolling in a comprehensive identity theft detection, protection, and resolution product. Tax season is stressful enough without having to worry about the risk of identity theft. It’s important to take steps to minimize your risk leading up to tax day and through the remainder of the year.

Executive Bonus Plans
A
R e c r u i t, r e wa r d , a n d r e ta i n y o u r b e st e m p l o y e e s re you looking for
an efficient way to recruit, reward, and retain key employees? Consider an Executive Bonus Plan – it’s one of the simplest nonqualified plans available today. An Executive Bonus Plan allows the employer to pay a bonus, or salary increase, to selected employees subject to reasonable compensation guidelines. Each employee covered by the plan then uses the bonus money to purchase life insurance on his or her own life. Alternatively, the bonus may be in the form of premiums paid directly to the insurance carrier on the executive’s behalf. Employees must pay income tax on the bonus; however, the employer can write another “bonus” check to cover a significant portion of the income tax liability. Each bonus given will incur additional income tax to the recipient. The employee is the owner and insured of the policy, so neither the employer nor any of its creditors will have any control over the policy’s cash value. The employer, however, may elect to restrict the
executive’s access to the cash value through a special policy endorsement commonly referred to as “golden handcuffs.” Cash value access would therefore be contingent upon the employee reaching some specific performance goals, tenure requirements, or both.
The Concern
Successful employers are always concerned about positioning their companies for future growth and expansion. It’s no secret that an outstanding executive team and an exceptional benefits package can help foster a successful environment. However, limits placed upon qualified retirement plan contributions often negatively impact higher salaried executives, thus adversely affecting their total benefits package. With these executives driving the company’s success, many employers would like to establish an effective compensation plan that helps recruit, reward, and retain key employees.
The Solution
One possible executive benefit planning technique is the Executive Bonus Plan. With
this strategy, the employer provides cash bonuses to key executives that can be used to purchase a life insurance policy or may pay premiums directly to the carrier on behalf of the employee. These bonuses are treated as taxable income to the executive; however, the employer can also offer executives a “double bonus” to help offset the income tax associated with the bonus. The life insurance policy is designed to provide key employees with a survivor benefit in the event of death and may also provide a taxfree source of potential cash accumulation for future retirement income. To learn more about how an Executive Bonus Plan can benefit your company, contact Denton Financial Group at 865-483-7909.

April in the Garden I don’t know about you, but I’m very ready for spring. When it does arrive, there are plenty of things that can be done, so let’s get ready to play in the dirt! ›› Everyone’s in a hurry to plant, so I’ll urge you to use caution. Our average last frost date isn’t until midApril, so don’t get in a rush to plant tender annuals and vegetables. ›› Late March and April are a great time to plant trees and shrubs. Moisture is abundant (at least it is right now!), the ground is warming, and plants have time to establish a good root system before it gets hot. The selection of plants is also best in the spring. ›› If you didn’t get your pruning done last month, it’s not too late to start. For evergreens, cut out all dead, diseased, and straggly growth, but don’t go down below the foliage to the bare wood. Gentle shaping is best. ›› Prune spring flowering shrubs like forsythia and quince after they finish

blooming and the petals have dropped. Forsythias can take a hard pruning if they’re losing their shape. Azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias can also be shaped after they bloom. ›› Prune semi-woody perennials like Artemisia, lavender, and careopteris. ›› If you didn’t fertilize shrubs last month, get that done as soon as possible. I prefer organic fertilizers because of the trace elements, micronutrients, and ease of use. Remember, chemical fertilizers feed the plant, organics feed the soil. ›› Start watching for insects, but don’t think you have to spray everything that creeps, crawls, or flies. There are lots of little fellows out there that do good work. Our honeybees are struggling, and we need to be careful how we spray. In general, use the least toxic product first, spray at dusk, and use systemic products if the organics don’t fix your problem. ›› You also need to begin watching for

signs of fungus. The damp weather hasn’t done us any favors in that area. Some plants, like roses, should be treated with a systemic fungicide on a monthly basis to prevent damage. ›› Get your flower beds ready for planting by adding manure, peat, compost, or topsoil. Before you do that, however, you need to get rid of the weeds. If you’re using a weed killer like Roundup, read the directions. Make sure it’s warm enough for it to work, and don’t spray it on a windy day unless you want to replace your neighbor’s shrubs. Also, don’t use an herbicide in a sprayer and then use the same sprayer to apply fungicide or insecticides. There will be residual herbicide, and you’ll likely kill your plants. I also recommend you use Preen or another pre-emergent herbicide to keep the weed population down in the upcoming months. ›› If you direct sow flower and vegetable seeds in the garden, be sure to thin them out as plants emerge to avoid overcrowding. Please don’t apply Preen or another pre-emergent to beds in which you’re going to sow seeds! Preen doesn’t know a weed seed from a flower or vegetable seed and will keep any from germinating! ›› Don’t cut back the foliage of spring flowering bulbs like daffodils until after they die back. They have to store up energy for next year’s blooms. It’ll help if you apply a fertilizer like Bulb Tone to the plant. ›› Harvest cool season vegetables and herbs. You can continue to plant them for longer production. ›› Stake tall perennials and cage peonies when they’re still small. You can do it later, but it’s harder after they get bushy. ›› Houseplants will appreciate a little care this month. Clean off dust by placing small plants in the sink and spraying. Large plants can be put in the shower. If it’s warm, you can set them outside during a light rain. Clean them up, re-pot if necessary, and fertilize. Pinching off new growth will help leggy plants bush out more. ›› This is the beginning of spring migration for birds, so keep your feeders full, and they will have a fast-food stop on their way to summer homes. Birdbaths are also a welcome treat this time of year. Birds appreciate a drink and a splash while traveling. Check our website, www.meadowview greenhouse.com, for our calendar and more information. Wood… Insect-Free!
Stop Wood Damage from Carpenter Bees!
Carpenter Bees
Buzzing around and drilling holes in wood are favorite activities of carpenter bees. With the warmer temperatures they are ready to mate, and then the females begin laying eggs in chambers they chew into the wood of decks, eaves, trim, railings, siding, outdoor furniture, fences, etc. If you see a round hole in your wood (approximately 1/2 inch) that looks like it has been drilled, you probably have a carpenter bee problem. A doit-yourself approach of plugging the holes won’t get rid of them, for they will just drill somewhere else! Carpenter bees will often come back to the same place year after year and take up where they left off.
Termites
Thinking of buying or selling a home? Remember that termites can cause structural property damage you often can’t see, and it’s important to have an annual termite inspection and termite warranty. Dayton’s inspections are FREE, and our pest professionals know exactly what to look for in unexpected places. If treatment is recommended, it’s best to get it done NOW to avoid any delays with the sale or purchase of a home. An added convenience is that Dayton Hylton is a licensed realtor and can access a lockbox without anyone having to be at home.

Get your home ready for warmer weather with a complete spring tune-up!
e’ve all seen them,
but few of us know what they are. You know… those pipes that protrude through the roofs of all the homes in our neighborhood. Simple enough, they’re vent pipes. These are pipes that connect to our home’s internal plumbing system that help prevent sewer gas from entering into our home through our plumbing fixtures. So why are they important to our home’s roof ? Well, because they protrude through your home’s roof, they are a source of potential leaks. The device that prevents the vent pipe from leaking is called a boot, and as you may have already guessed, not all boots are created equal. A poor quality boot, like the one shown in this photo, allows water to penetrate your roof, resulting in wet insulation and ceiling and wall surfaces, and is the perfect breeding place for mold and mildew. Sadly, many homeowners who have paid to have a quality roof installed often have had these poor quality boots used, many which last only a few years, resulting in the failure of their roofing system and damage to their home’s interior. Why are they used? To save the roofing contractor money.
At All Dry Roofing, homeowners receive the highest value for their investment, including: » Premium quality roofing materials » Vent boots with lifetime guarantee » Ice/rain barriers » A written warranty All at no additional cost and backed up by All Dry Roofing’s reputation for quality, integrity, and outstanding customer service.

Environmentally Friendly Ways to Keep Your Lawn Looking Great Maintaining the perfect lawn
is easier than you think, and with the right tools, you can be both efficient with your yard work and eco-conscious. If it’s lush green turf that you’re after, but you also care about your carbon footprint, there are a few tools and practices that can help you have it both ways. Many of the tips for maintaining a truly green lawn can also save you money and time. As you’re gearing up to enjoy your outdoor space this season, here are a few suggestions to follow for a healthy lawn you can feel good about.
» Give back to your lawn. One of the best treatments for your yard is to let a layer of lawn clippings settle on the top of your turf after mowing. The clippings decompose and replenish your soil, encouraging positive growth. A common misconception is that leaving the clippings on top of your lawn leads to the development of thatch, when in fact it’s usually caused by other conditions. Leaving your clippings only helps your lawn and lessens the amount of work you have to do.
» Be wise with your water. With a few strategic adjustments, you can significantly reduce the amount of water you use to keep your lawn healthy. Water less frequently with a good soaking each time and the water you use will go further. Watering in the morning will also help your lawn soak up the water rather than having it evaporate before it makes it into your soil. Installing a rain barrel is also a great way to reuse the water that runs off your house without ever having to turn on the spigot. » Buy a discerning fertilizer. Chemical fertilizers might offer quick results, but organic fertilizers often provide more staying power as they focus more on improving soil quality rather than the quick fix of applying nutrients directly to the plant. To make sure you are effective with your fertilizer use, take a soil sample to a local garden store to analyze it, and they’ll recommend the best fertilizing mix for your lawn.
» Allow your lawn to protect itself. Mowing too short is a key mistake many people make. A good rule of thumb is to never cut more than one-third of the current height. This will ensure that your grass can develop deep enough roots to thrive and won’t get scorched when summer temperatures arrive. You can have a beautiful, green lawn without putting extra stress on the environment.

Red Carpet Treatment When it comes to home improvement projects, such as replacing your windows, we as homeowners sometimes end up making the decision more confusing than it needs to be. I have visited many homeowners who have had seven, eight, nine, or more different replacement window companies out to look at their project. Generally, when you have interviewed this many companies, you have gathered more than enough information to create a great deal of confusion, making your decision even more difficult. When selecting a company to handle your home improvement needs, there are three important pieces of information that you as a homeowner need to know: 1. Is this company certified by the manufacturer whose products you’re purchasing? 2. How long has the manufacturer been doing business? 3. How long has the company you’re considering been doing business, and will they provide references?
Marin Windows is a century-old, family owned business that has introduced Infinity from Marvin as the custom replacement division of the Marvin family of windows. CRS Exteriors is the certified installation company for the Infinity window from Marvin, and the benefit to you as a homeowner is that any issues you may have with your window project is handled directly by CRS Exteriors and no one else. It’s important for you to choose companies that have a longstanding history of installing quality products, because they are more likely to remain in business long into the future when others may not. Many window replacement companies are no more than retail stores selling windows, using subcontractors that are not necessarily certified to install your windows. Should an issue with the window occur, and it is determined that the problem is due to improper installation, then the finger pointing begins, and that can create a big headache. That is not the case with CRS Exteriors

and Infinity from Marvin Windows. CRS Exteriors will roll out the “red carpet treatment” for you. We literally use red carpet drop cloths inside your home to keep any debris created by the installation from ever hitting your floor. Also, if an issue occurs with your window, you only have to call CRS Exteriors for your answer. So if you want to experience the “red carpet treatment” from the number one Infinity dealer in the country, call CRS Exteriors at 865-6708823 or visit www.crsexteriors.com. Sprinkler Stains…Water from your sprin-
kler may be the culprit when your windows become spotted with mineral deposits. Frequent watering is necessary to keep grass green and flowers growing, but there are steps you can take to protect your windows, too. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system or use a lawn care company, be sure your sprinklers are adjusted so they don’t spray directly on the glass. Use an automatic timer, and always water early in the morning when the wind is calmer. Wind can cause water to spray on your windows. Plant ivy or other vegetation that doesn’t require frequent watering close to your home. Then you can use smaller sprinkler heads or hoses to water. Consider using a bubbler hose for watering plants near your home to eliminate any spray on the glass. Remember, this system isn’t effective on lawn areas.
Critter Problems… Blowers and mowers used for lawn maintenance may blow debris into windows and add dust to spider webs that are there. Be sure to check for a spider problem, and keep the webs cleared. If birds are getting your windows dirty, try ledge spikes or even shock strips to keep them away. Vegetation close to a home can be a haven for snails, which can leave unattractive trails of slime on your windows. To avoid this, keep your landscaping trimmed back. Spring Cleaning…Don’t forget the windows. Remember, your windows are the only feature of your home that can be seen from the outside and the inside. Fish Window Cleaning® can help you protect your investment with a thorough cleaning that includes removing any spots or hard water deposits from your windows, removing loose debris from tracks, and detailing sills and tracks. We’ll also remove your screens and check and clean them thoroughly. FISH can make sure you’re ready for spring rains by cleaning your gutters and downspouts and removing and disposing of all debris. Inside your home, FISH can clean and dust hard-to-reach chandeliers and ceiling fans as well as skylights and solar panels. Let Us Help You Tackle Mount Everest It’s that time of year again – time for spring cleaning your home! This annual ritual may strike fear and dread in your heart, but it doesn’t need to be painful. If deep cleaning your home seems like the Mount Everest of all cleaning jobs, we can help. Perhaps your home needs a jump-
start. We at Surface Doc have the tools to get your tile and grout, carpet, concrete, and most anything else deep cleaned, sanitized, and ready for nominal maintenance. Once your home is sparkling clean, it’s much easier to keep it that way. After cleansing, the homeowner should consider sealing. Sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors and
countertops, tile and grout, and many others. Since the molecules penetrate deep into porous materials, they bond permanently together; thus creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic, sunlight, and even high pressure hosing. After a proper sealing, your floor need only be wiped clean with hot water and a microfiber pad. Say “goodbye” to harsh chemicals and stringent cleaning methods, and say “hello” to a beautiful home that is easy to maintain. Here’s how we do it. First, we pre-spray your floor with emulsifier to start the soil breakdown process. Then, we use a combination of heat, pressure, and extraction simultaneously to remove all foreign chemicals, grease, build-up, and dirt. The extreme heat breaks down the soil and opens the pores in your floors to remove even deep down build-up. Without the heat and extraction
method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer of your floor. With up to 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suc- Co-owner tion, dirt is literally John blasted out of your Fitzwilliam tile and taken away immediately. In addition, Surface Doc uses purified water to leave absolutely no residue. Once the surface has been properly restored to a like-new condition, Surface Doc offers homeowners the option to seal floors, which we guarantee for LIFE. We look forward to helping your home reach its finest potential. Call me at 865-567-1986 or visit us at www.SurfaceDoc.com.

No Need to Buy New...
A Simple Update Will Do f you’re like most homeown-
ers, you have several furniture and décor pieces around the house that have seen better days. While the natural response is to throw away outdated items and buy something new, even lackluster home objects deserve a second chance. You can easily transform your trash into treasure with a little creativity and some elbow grease. Follow these quick and easy makeover tips, and before you know it, those worn out and uninspiring pieces will be looking great again.
Endless Possibilities
Because of its resilience, plastic is a popular choice both around the house and the yard. From furniture and kids’ toys to even coolers, plastic surfaces are everywhere. Although these pieces are inexpensive and durable, they often can look a little worse for wear after a few years of use. Luckily, it’s easy to make over what you already have with the new indoor/outdoor plastic primers on the market, offering lasting durability and improved adhesion. Simply apply the primer to any outdated or lackluster plastic surface and then paint. You’ll be able to truly customize any plastic surface to fit the theme you’re looking for. Even if the object is brand new, sometimes improvements still need to be made. Plastic storage drawers and cabinets are the perfect example of something new – and yet still boring. They often come in clear or are limited to a few, select colors that never quite match your décor theme. Unless you want to keep them hidden, repainting is a must. By using plastic primers, you can paint the drawers in any color to match the rest of the room. Now those inexpensive storage units will look like real furniture you can show off.
Make a Stylish Transformation
Do you have an old furniture piece that just doesn’t fit in with your décor? Chances are you do. But instead of going through the hassle of getting rid of it, breathe new life 48
EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2013
into it and transform the piece into something completely new. Take for example an outdated or unsightly chest of drawers you may have hidden in the attic or in the corner of the room. Instead of hiding it, give it a new outlook on life. Simply sand it down and give it a fresh coat of paint that will coordinate with the rest of your room. Add a few embellishments, such as new knobs or paint accents, and voila – you have a new nightstand or end table. You can also use the same creativity to transform an old vanity into a chic desk or an armoire into a stylish potting bench and garden center on your patio.
Picture This
Picture frames are a great way to display family portraits and your favorite memories while also adding a little style to a blank wall. Repurpose old frames you already have lying around the house to create a gallery wall with some pizzazz. With a few coats of spray paint, you can take frames from mismatched to mesmerizing. Spruce them up a bit more by using patterned papers as mats. Instead of white or cream, use dramatic colors and bold prints. Simply cut an opening the size of the photo and you’ll have an unexpected pop of style and color in your new photo gallery. With a few simple and easy ideas, your outdated and boring pieces can find a new spot in your home instead of on the curb.
Home
The Benefits of Building a New Home vs. Buying an Older Home f you’re like most home-
buyers, you have a picture in mind of what your “dream home” should look like. When you search for an existing home with those features, it’s rare that you’ll find one with all your criteria. Odds are that every prospective house will have a few things that need to be changed before you move in, such as paint color, flooring, cabinetry, or landscaping. As a result, you’ll have to spend added time and money to get the house to meet your minimum requirements, but you’re still “settling.” Even if you’re fortunate enough to find an older home that has the features you want, home repairs and maintenance costs will make your new “old” house even more expensive. New homes, on the other hand, provide a builder’s warranty that covers most everything for at least one year, while other major components are usually warrantied for extended periods. Building a new home also gives you the advantage of being able to design the look of your home right from the beginning and empowers you with choices. Instead of trying to make your lifestyle conform to a predefined space, you can create a design that matches with the way you and your family want to live. Need a cozy nook for reading all of your favorite books? Or maybe an extra room for the gym equipment? Or how about a bonus room with the latest technology for the kids? The choice is yours! Jenny Blalock, Design/Licensed Contractor, can help you evaluate your family’s lifestyle and your living preferences. At Luxe Homes and Design, Jenny and her team will help eliminate the stress from your home design and building experience. Because there are hundreds of details that go into each home design, Luxe Homes and Design will help you successfully navigate the design/build process that is perfect for your current and future needs and lifestyle, whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or seasoned professional. Another major benefit to building a new home is that it will be far more energy efficient than an
older home. New homes are built according to the latest energy conversation standards and feature higher-efficiency insulation, doors, and windows, for starters. Plus, Luxe Homes and Design goes a step further by using tankless water heaters, ENERGY STAR rated appliances, and water-saving faucets and shower heads that minimize utility bills. An older home can sometimes be retrofitted with these features, but all at an additional cost. By building with the latest materials and designs, you can be rest assured that your brand new dream home meets today’s high building standards for structure,
safety, and sus- Jenny Blalock General tainability. New Licensed Contractor homes include the latest technology that makes it easy to maintain the comfortable lifestyle and living environment you want and deserve. You’ll also have the opportunity to design the home that perfectly suits your needs instead of purchasing somebody else’s lifestyle preferences and, perhaps, headaches. For a free, no obligation consultation for your new home, contact Jenny Blalock at 865-755-4680 or visit www.luxehomes design.com. With patience, your dream home design will be easier to discover than you might have imagined.

Fling into Spring
Jamie Nunley
with These Three Current Design Trends ith spring right around the corner, it is time to clear out the doom and gloom of winter and welcome the light and warmth of spring! A new window treatment is an easy way to update any room by inviting springtime into your home. These three design trends will help you do just that.
1. Let the light in: Natural light,
and lots of it, is always a welcome sight after a long, cold winter. Cellular Shades are a fantastic product to use to highlight the natural light in your home. The fabric alone does an excellent job of letting the good light in, but when you add the Top Down Bottom Up feature, you are well on your way to complete light enjoyment this spring.

3. Keep it clean and simple: As my grandmother
used to say, “It’s spring, so it’s time to clean!”, and what product is easier to clean than the classic Plantation Shutter? Shutters are THE lowest maintenance product on the market right now. Their clean, simple lines add beauty to any window, but maintenance is also a breeze. Shutter options are endless, but using large louvers will continue to let the light in and keep grandma happy.
Call today for a free in-home consultation, and we will welcome springtime into your home together! At Windows by Design, “Making your House your Home” is our motto. been seen as just a utilitarian, unattractive space for the house,” said Dan Morgan, an owner of Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage. “However, people are choosing to make the garage a true extension of their home with affordable renovations that combine attractiveness with functionality, as well as reflecting personal style. The result is a garage that welcomes you home.” PremierGarage’s flexible storage and organization systems and commercial-grade concrete floor coatings are custom designed to meet your specific needs and budget. Five Reasons to Install Retractable Screens 1. Let in fresh air and keep out insects.
As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more time on our patios and porches, yet bugs often make it difficult to stay outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a solution that fits your needs.
2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you to
A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615
enjoy uninterrupted views when they’re retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about bugs. Large, motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort and be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish views or esthetics, as they’re only in place when needed.
3. Preserve the look and design of your doorway. Homeowners
are throwing out the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. They provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly results, making it a perfect addition for any home.
4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens are
the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or retract the screens to gain the warming effects of the sun in the cooler months.
5. Enjoy the convenience of a professional installation. Homeowners often struggle
to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of their openings. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if looking for recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs.

value, particularly during these uncertain economic times. Homeowners and renters alike, in search of high-quality, value-priced furniture, often find themselves in a quandary. With high retail furniture prices, shoppers often have to choose between just a few pieces of quality furniture or a room full of lower quality, affordable furniture. But there is an alternative. A third choice, if you will. How about a home full of quality furniture at a savings of up to 75% off retail? Consign To Design is Knoxville’s premier choice for quality, pre-owned, gently used furniture. You don’t have to sacrifice selection, either. Consign To Design features nearly 10,000 square feet of furniture, lighting, home décor items, art, and more. You will find painted furniture as well.
Choose from the nation’s top furniture manufacturers, including: • Drexel Heritage • Henredon • Thomasville • Stanley • Pennsylvania House • And more
So where does all of this great furniture, lighting, home décor items, and art come from? From homes like yours and mine. Perhaps you’ve recently down-
sized, changed your home’s décor, moved, remodeled… you name it. The result is quality, gently used items that are unneeded but often timeless, have many years of useful life remaining, and still retain value. Consign To Design is the perfect destination for both buyers and sellers to converge – buyers to purchase quality furniture, lighting, home décor items, and art at far below their original retail price and sellers to repurpose their unused, quality items, applying the price they receive to help offset the cost of replacement furniture. Consign To Design is one more thing. It is a collection of ideas where you’ll discover furniture and other items tastefully placed in vignette-type settings throughout the store which are designed to help shoppers visualize just how these items might appear in their own homes. It’s a win-win for both buyers and sellers. So, the choice is yours. One or two quality items at full retail, a room full of affordable, lower quality furniture, or a home full of great furniture at a price you can afford.

Since 1996, the Civil War Trust has sponsored Park Day, an annual hands-on preservation event to help Civil War battlefields and historic sites take on maintenance projects large and small. This year Park Day will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 9 am to 2 pm at the Mabry-Hazen House. Activities will include leaf and brush removal, mulching, dead tree removal, and general spring-cleaning. Some tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes, pitchforks, tarps, and similar yard tools. The Mabry-Hazen House Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is
located on six acres atop Mabry’s Hill. Housing three generations of the same family from 1858-1987, the Mabry-Hazen House served as headquarters for both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. Park Day, now in its 17th year, is an annual hands-on preservation event created by the Trust to assist local groups with the maintenance of Civil War sites. In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts and will also be provided a free lunch. For more information, call 865.522.8661 or visit www. mabryhazen.com.
ith home utility costs
on the rise, homeowners are taking steps to reduce their energy consumption, particularly their electrical usage. But don’t overlook your home’s water consumption. Why? Well, for every gallon of water you waste unnecessarily, you not only pay for the water itself, but also the energy required to heat the water. Also, it doesn’t stop there, because you also have to pay sewer charges for every gallon of water that goes down your drains. Did you know that the average American family of four actually wastes 10,000 gallons of water annually just by waiting for the water from the faucet to warm up? That’s literally money down the drain. Here’s something else to Jamie Foster, consider: your home’s water Owner heater continually consumes energy just to maintain the temperature of the water in the tank. That means you’re wasting precious energy dollars heating water even when there’s no one at home. The solution? A system that not only provides instant hot water, but endless hot water as well… and all while saving you money. Here’s how it works. You replace your conventional tank-style water heater with a new, state-of-the-art tankless system that instantaneously heats your water only when it’s needed. No more heated water stored in your water heater tank. Secondly, you install a re-circulating system on your home’s hot water plumbing that will deliver endless hot water almost instantaneously. • Instantaneous hot water • Unlimited hot water • Lower energy costs • Lower water bills • Lower sewer bills That’s a return on your investment that is hard to find today. To learn more, and to start saving energy costs tomorrow, call me today.

and cleaning? In many instances, the two words are used interchangeably, but not if you’re talking about Oriental and fine rug washing and carpet cleaning. Then the two are very different animals. The process used to wash an Oriental or fine rug is very different than that used to clean your home’s wall-to-wall carpet. First, Oriental and fine rugs are usually hand-knotted, hand-woven, or constructed on a loom using natural fibers such as wool, silk, and/or cotton and dyed with either vegetable, natural, or synthetic dyes.

Although very durable, these Oriental and fine rugs cannot be safely washed at home. Instead, they should be washed in a highly specialized facility where precise conditions can be maintained, including specialized cleaning agents and controlled drying. These valuable, often heirloom pieces can be safely washed in these facilities and made to last for generations. Wall-to-wall, in-home carpet cleaning is a much different process, largely because they are manufactured using synthetic fibers and color-fast dyes. Although I’ve been in the carpet cleaning business for more than a quarter of a century, I’ve spent the last decade launching one of the most respected and trusted Oriental and fine rug washing businesses in East Tennessee, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. Curb Appeal
2013’s Hottest Home Improvement Trend
The perfect addition to exterior renovations is an outdoor living area. Adding a low maintenance, vinyl fence is a great option to extend interior space to the outdoors.
he busy home remodeling season is a great time for homeowners to focus on increasing curb appeal. The percentage of homeowners who feel now is a good time to spend money on home improvement has doubled since 2009, according to a recent survey. Considering two of the top four features consumers have on their wish lists for their next home are low maintenance exteriors and a private backyard, high-performance products that come in a variety of colors, textures, and designs are expected to be in high demand this year. Based on these survey results, it was found that many homeowners want to refresh what’s already there. Perhaps they’re looking to dig out that hidden sophistication of a mid-century home, or they might have a classic and want to bring out the character a bit more. Beyond the facade, homeowners also really love outdoor living spaces; they see their yard as an extension of the indoors. From small touchups to large renovations, projects such as replacing boring and beige with colorful vinyl siding and trim, updating entryways with bright front doors and shutters, and sprucing up outdoor living areas can make a big difference in the look of your home and neighborhood. Homeowners want it all in 2013; low maintenance products that perform and style that breaks the cookie-cutter mold. Colorful vinyl siding options in different styles, combined with complementary trim, stone veneer, and designer accents that set your home apart are in demand for home improvements. Consider these upgrades to get magazine-ready looks for your home’s exterior.
This home was remodeled to create instant curb appeal. A new entry, windows, siding, and stone veneer were added to transform the home’s bland exterior into a magazine-ready home.
Make a Grand Entrance
For experienced DIYers considering a weekend project, painting the front door or replacing shutters is a simple solution with dramatic results. These small changes create a focal point for the house and provide a warm, inviting appearance with a modern feel. Other subtle improvements like adding modern lighting fixtures, detailed railings, a new mailbox, stone columns, or house numbers can also go a long way in enhancing a home’s custom look.
Whole-Home Overhaul
For those ready to create a whole new style, installing new siding and trim can infuse life into a bland exterior. Vinyl siding, stone veneer, and designer accents have evolved throughout the years, with vastly expanded color palettes, easy maintenance, and a natural
look. By incorporating cellular PVC trim as an accent to vinyl siding and stone – around windows, on dormers, eaves, and gables – even the most discerning homeowners can enjoy a sophisticated look that’s also low maintenance.
The Great Outdoors
The perfect addition to any exterior design renovation is an outdoor living area to entertain friends, enjoy a summer barbecue, or just relax with the newspaper. To extend your interior space to the outdoors, consider projects such as installing an outdoor fireplace or kitchen with durable stone veneer or a low maintenance vinyl privacy or picket fence. Whether you’re looking for a small refresh or a completely enhanced look, many of this year’s hottest home design trends are waiting outside. April 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:
Eucalyptus
ur plant of the month is actually appealing all year long. That is because Eucalyptus neglecta, commonly called Omeo Gum, is an evergreen that maintains its foliage year round. It also has the familiar blue-green eucalyptus foliage with round- to oval-shaped leaves and the delightful, distinctive fragrance. These features make it ideal not only as a specimen tree, but also as a source for cut branches that can be dried and used in arrangements. Native mainly to Australia, many of the eucalyptus species do not tolerate frost, much less a freeze. Eucalyptus neglecta, however, is a hardier species and is listed as being winter hardy to zone 7. The specimen in the UT Gardens, Knoxville, which is in zone 6b, has been in the ground for six years and is thriving. It has reached a height of 16 feet in that short time and is considered a fast-growing plant. It does well in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. To add to the attributes of this beautiful tree, let’s take a look at the species name neglecta. Any plant whose name implies it doesn’t need much care is a winner in my book. At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, we have certainly found this to be the case. Omeo Gum can tolerate many soil types, including our heavy clay soil. Once established, it is considered a water-wise plant needing little supplemental watering in our region. It’s ideal to use in a Xeriscape landscape or in an area where irrigation or the hose does not reach. Although the Omeo Gum does have a white flower, the blooms are so inconspicuous that you may not even notice them. However, the foliage is striking. Eucalyptus has long been valued for its aromatic properties and has been used medicinally as an antiseptic and for respiratory ailments.
The leaves are popular for use in potpourris, flower arrangements, and wreaths as well as for extraction of their essential oils. Even if you never use the cut foliage, the many fine characteristics of Eucalyptus neglecta warrant its use in the landscape and earn it the title “Plant of the Month” not only for one month, but for all 12.

Ants
Ants are very social and the most abundant insect infesting our homes and yards. They are everywhere and eat almost anything. In most cases, ants are merely a nuisance, but some species can cause damage. Damage includes contaminating food, destroying seeds and plants, and, in the case of carpenter ants, possible structure damage to homes. Fire ants are also fast becoming more common in the south and can produce a painful sting and injuries that are sometimes fatal in children, senior citizens, and small animals. Monthly and quarterly pest control is available.

Dining Out Drives U.S. Job Growth Did you know that when you and your
family dine out, you are helping your community’s economy and the economy at large? That’s because restaurants employ millions of Americans nationwide. Overall, unemployment remains high as the nation slowly makes its way out of recession. One bright spot in the jobs picture is the restaurant industry, which continues to outpace the national economy when it comes to driving job growth. Why is that? Because Americans love to dine out. In fact, more than nine out of 10 say they enjoy going to restaurants, and nearly half say it’s an essential part of their lifestyle. National Restaurant Association (NRA) research also shows that two out of five consumers say they’re not using restaurants as often as they would like. When more people dine out, order delivery, and use takeout, restaurants staff up to keep up with demand. The restaurant industry is currently the second-largest private sector employer, providing career opportunities for more than 13 million people, or one out of every 10 working
individuals, according to the NRA’s 2013 Restaurant Industry Forecast. Since the employment recovery began in March 2010, restaurants have created more than 701,000 new positions – only the professional services and health care industries have created more jobs during that same time. The rate of employment growth in the restaurant industry was more than double the overall economy during the last year, and restaurants will continue to be a major driver in job creation into the future. Restaurants are projected to add 1.3 million new positions in the next decade, with the fastest growing job categories being combined food-preparation and serving positions, cooks, and supervisors. From restaurant managers to chefs to servers, restaurants offer a wide range of jobs, often with quick opportunities to rise up the ranks. Restaurants are also a training ground for budding entrepreneurs and even careers
in other industries, as half of all Americans have worked in a restaurant at some point in their lives. One-third of adults got their first job in a restaurant, and eight out of 10 restaurant owners started in entry-level positions. So next time you dine out, you’re not only getting a delicious meal and quality time with family and friends, but you’re doing your part in creating jobs for the U.S. economy. Bon Appetit!

classics, and, of course, The Tonight Show theme. Audiences are finally able to hear the depth of talent belonging to a band that rarely played a whole tune on the air. Severinsen can blow the roof off with a trumpet solo, but he is not the only accomplished soloist. Many of his band members get their welldeserved turns in the spotlight. Doc’s tour dates are consistently sold out. A Grammy award winner, Doc has made more than 30 albums from big band and jazz to fusion and classical. Today, Doc has not lost his flair for outrageous fashions and witty banter. Yet he is highly regarded as one of the most technically proficient trumpeters. Doc has the best stage presence of anyone out there. He can blow a horn like few others…he is a high note virtuoso, a genuinely funny man, and always a fashion fiend. Indoor Pollution Can Be Greater Than Outdoor Pollution
Did you know that according to a five-year study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air pollutant levels inside your home are likely two to five times greater than those out-of-doors?
W
hy? Simple. Because the air you breathe indoors is constantly being re-circulated through the hundreds of feet of duct work that comprises your home’s HVAC system. That means dust, dirt, pollen, debris, animal dander, and biological pollutants are constantly being re-circulated through your home each time your HVAC system cycles. The solution? Even simpler! Clean your home’s HVAC system and duct work. But what if you already routinely vacuum your home’s grilles and registers? Your home’s heating and cooling system includes many hundreds of feet of duct work that your vacuum can’t reach, leaving dust, dirt, and pollen laying in the ducts, just waiting to be re-circulated. The real solution to the problem is the company that more Americans rely upon than any other: Duct Doctor.

Duct Doctor’s patented truck-mounted vacuum and powered accessories provide up to four times more suction than the competition, resulting in a cleaner HVAC system that operates more efficiently while consuming less energy. Research by both the EPA and Louisiana State University showed that the removal of air duct debris can increase the air flow of HVAC systems by as much as 20%. If you’re concerned about your family’s health, and who isn’t, doesn’t it make sense to improve the quality of the air they’re breathing inside your home? remarkable, and sometimes surprising, Civil War past. Names such as Fort Sanders and Campbell’s Station are names we still use today but which are not always readily associatedwithadividedpast. Tourists visiting our city are often perplexed to learn that KnoxCountywasmostlyantisecession, and the majority of its citizens supported the Union. While Knoxville may not have the national recognition of historic sites like Shiloh, we do have a Civil War history that is accessible to the public. 2013 marks the third year of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. With its commemoration, local historians and enthusiasts are encouraging people to explore Knoxville’s Civil War past in a variety of ways. One of the easiest ways to start your exploration is to visit www.knoxcivilwar.org. This website provides a listing of all upcoming events that relate to the Civil War, including reenactments, lectures, living histories, and special exhibits. For those who want an immersive experience, two historic sites, featuring historic house museums, will be offering Civil War events this spring. The Mabry-Hazen House, built in 1858, will host their Civil War Living History on April 13th and 14th. Mabry’s Hill served as headquarters for both armies during the Civil War and will once again be occupied by Union and Confederate troops. Visitors will enjoy open camps, military demonstrations, and programming on a variety of subjects including arms and ammunition, medicinal practice, field music, and the role of women during the war. Guided tours of the historic home, which features the original family collection, will be offered. Admission will also include a visit to the Bethel Confederate Cemetery, which serves as the resting place for more than 1,600 Confederate
soldiers, and its museum. The Ramsey House, built in 1797, will be hosting their annual Civil War Living History and Reenactment weekend on May 4th and 5th. Recreation of the “Skirmish on the Holston,” which occurred on Feb. 20, 1864, will be held at 2:00 pm each day by Civil War reenactors. Visitors may stroll the grounds through Union and Confederate encampments, experiencing the life of a soldier during the Civil War. Tom and Sue Wright as Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd will perform their “Life of Lincoln” at various times during the weekend. General Lee, his horse Traveler, and Mrs. Lee will be in attendance throughout the weekend. Tennessee Quiltworks will present the fictional character, “Hattie,” and her life during the Civil War. There will be Civil War period activities for children, Civil War period music, and a display of the medical practices of the era. These two upcoming events represent just a few ways in which the Civil War Sesquicentennial is being commemorated. Be sure to check out other opportunities, including the Frank H. McClung Museum’s Civil War Lecture Series, special presentations by the East Tennessee Historical Society, the Farragut Folklife Museum, and the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable’s monthly presentations. Other large events include the East Tennessee History Fair, scheduled for August 17th, and the 150th anniversary and reenactment of the Battle of Fort Sanders set for October 10th – 13th. 2013 has occasions for visitors and residents alike to engage in Knoxville’s Civil War past. Plans are underway for a rededication at Fort Higley, and Fort Dickerson will soon have an updated entrance. Local Civil War enthusiasts are working to ensure that it all culminates in a major crescendo in 2015, the final year of the Sesquicentennial. So get out and explore, because the 150th anniversary of the Civil War really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Tennessee Marble History Day at Ijams Nature Center
Share what you know about Tennessee marble Following a successful session
at the East Tennessee History Center last month, local historians are urging members of the public to share personal knowledge, stories, family photographs, or photos of marble buildings or other treasures that can be hand carried for show and tell at an informal information gathering session at Ijams Nature Center on Saturday, April 6, from 1 to 4 pm. Many of us know that Tennessee marble has been used in many buildings in Washington, D.C. Three of the four grand staircases leading to the House and Senate Chambers in the United States Capitol are dark cedar (brown variegated marble) from Hawkins County. The exterior light pink marble for the National Gallery of Art and its East Building came from Knox and Blount County quarries. But did you know that the floor of Grand Central Terminal
in New York City is dark pink Tennessee marble and that the Morgan Library was built of a light pink marble likely quarried out of one of the two quarries now property of Ijams? Will you share your knowledge of the marble industry in East Tennessee with us? Did anyone in your family work in an East Tennessee marble quarry? Do you have any objects made of Tennessee pink, gray, or cedar marble or live in a house that has any interior marble features? We would love to talk with you! Public historian Susan W. Knowles, Ph.D. and Carroll Van West, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University, are visiting quarries and mills around the region, collecting stories, and scanning documents and photographs for a survey of the East Tennessee Marble Industry, 1838-1950.
Their goal is to bring this important cultural heritage national attention. Maps of former quarry and mill locations will show the extent of marble quarrying in the area. The former Mead and Ross quarries (now part of Ijams Nature Center) will be nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. This project is a partnership between Ijams Nature Center, the East Tennessee Historical Society, the McClung Historical Collection/Knox County Public Library, the Center for Historic Preservation at MTSU, and Knox Heritage, with a grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission. Ijams Nature Center is a 300-acre urban greenspace, located at 2915 Island Home Avenue in Knoxville, encouraging stewardship of the natural world by providing engaging outdoor experiences. What to Expect from the Wireless Industry in 2013 Faster data speeds, rapid-fire com-
munication, bigger screens. The wireless industry is creeping ever closer to instantaneous interaction all the time according to mobile experts. The wireless industry is going to see a boom in convenience and speed during the next year. Wireless providers, device manufacturers, app developers, and network service providers are all working to offer consumers a greater range of flexibility than ever before, whether it is in the form of payment, upgraded devices, or network connectivity. Society dictates a need for convenient technology. What is particularly exciting about the wireless industry is the cross-section between technology as entertainment and technology as communication and how to accommodate for both. The following are five trends that will pulse through the wireless industry in 2013:
1 4G LTE
Next-generation 4G LTE networks are bringing broadband speeds to mobile device users in more parts of the country every day. 72 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2013
As smartphones and tablets take the place of computers, access to high-speed downloads and uploads via 4G LTE allows users to stream music, movies, and TV shows, share and upload photos and video clips, and access websites, social networks, and important documents on-the-go. More and more carriers are rolling out 4G LTE.
2 Unlimited data
That old saying, “talk is cheap,” has never been truer. During the past five years, we’ve seen mobile voice minutes become a nearfree commodity while consumer demand for more and faster mobile data has been on the rise. While truly unlimited data plans are going the way of the dinosaur, most consumers don’t actually need unlimited data. Look for carriers to experiment with ways to offer tiered data plans that base value on the number of bits customers are actually using.
3 Screen size
Not five years ago, a 3.5-inch display on a smartphone was considered very big. During the past three months, Samsung has sold
three million units of the Samsung Galaxy Note(R) II, which has a 5.5-inch display and is widely available from carriers. What is happening to the smartphone screen size, and when will “huge” become “big enough?”
4 Social networking integration
Calling begat emailing; emailing begat texting; texting begat instant messaging. Now Facebook and Twitter messaging are threatening to usurp them all. Facebook is almost as big as the rest of the web itself. Twitter breaks news faster than live TV. Social networking on smartphones is more than apps and links – it’s about system level integration that keeps tweets, tags, alerts, and uploads at your fingertips.
5 Tablets
PCs as we know them may not be dead just yet, but tablets are hot. Consumers are embracing the intuitiveness and portability that tablets offer, and manufacturers are finding ways to pack dual and quad-core processing power into touch-based computers selling for less than $200 in some cases.

Word of Mouth It’s rare indeed when a start-up business doesn’t describe for me what will be their reliance on word of mouth advertising as the foundation for their future success.
W
hile there is no
denying that word of mouth advertising has played an important role in the success of many small businesses, it has no doubt played an even greater role in the failure of many more businesses that relied upon it exclusively. I think that most small businesses that state their reliance on word of mouth, staking their future success on its ability to produce both future customers and revenue, do so out of either a lack of understanding of their marketplace or
the lack of resources needed to implement a well thought-out marketing strategy. I’ll be the first to admit that word of mouth advertising has played an integral role in the success of our publishing business, but the true catalyst to this successful word of mouth campaign has been a sustained marketing strategy during several years which combined print, radio, online, and networking platforms. Small business owners often cite a business who, relying solely on word of mouth, was able to achieve incredible success. Yes, there are exceptions, but they are few and far between, and citing these exceptions will not overcome the often hard, cold realities of the competitive marketplace that you’re likely to discover. The reliance on word of mouth advertising for many small businesses may result from economic reality, the inability to finance a more robust marketing campaign. But, it’s not likely to overcome the realities of the marketplace where you will be just one voice in a sea of competing voices.
Business
If corporate giants such as Apple and Coca- Cola find it necessary to advertise to further successfully differentiate themselves, how likely is it that you will achieve your full potential relying solely on word of mouth? If you’re the exception, congratulations. If you think you’re the exception, be wary. But if you’re like the rest of us, allocate what resources you can, and then invest them wisely. Discover which advertising platform(s) best meets your needs, and then commit to a consistent plan of differentiating your small business to potential new customers. Done well, this strategy will become the catalyst to unleashing the full power of word of mouth that will propel you on to success.
Not Another Meeting! B U S INE S S B A S I C S by Beth Townsend Meetings get a bum rap, as most people attend with a shrug of the shoulders, anticipating a big yawn and wasted time. As long as I can remember being a part of the business world, I’ve been listening to people complain about meetings. Yet we still have them every week, and that’s not likely to change. The nature of my business recently has required that I attend more meetings than usual the past several weeks. Being a people watcher, I tend to be extremely alert and aware of what’s going on around me. Therefore, as I’ve sat around large executive tables with others, I’ve been listening and learning. Perhaps meetings are more important than we tend to think.
How to attend meetings
Unplug. Old fashioned courtesy should be the norm but is often MIA. When someone is presenting information, don’t be rude by having your phone on the table, buzzing and lighting up with each new message. You wouldn’t want others doing that to you, so don’t do it to them. It’s just not professional. No one is so important that you must respond to everything right then. Listen – you will learn something. In order
to listen, you must hear what’s being said. Be quiet, and don’t let others drag you into idol chatter. Look at the presenter, take notes, and offer interaction when appropriate. Not only will you hear what others are likely to miss, but you’ll gain the respect of the presenter, who’s probably presenting because he or she has earned to right to do so. Even if you’re the only one, be professional.
How to have productive meetings
Plan. The reason meetings are often dreaded is because they can be a waste of time. If you schedule meetings, then make others glad they came by making sure it’s not a waste of time. Offer good content, opportunity for input, and purposeful interaction. Have an agenda and stick to it. Don’t let others ramble; be a confident leader and stick to the topic. Always start and end on time. You’ll lose credibility with those attending if you don’t keep on topic and move the meeting forward. Offer visuals. Technology has made it easy to be innovative, so take time to create exciting meetings. Don’t expect to get people’s attention just by having a meeting. Earn their respect by being creative, offering others a chance to lead,
and hold those who participate accountable for excellent content. Also, ask others who are being a distraction to be quiet. Leaders shouldn’t be afraid to lead and take charge. Not another meeting? Today’s business environment awards those who still understand the importance of interpersonal skills. What you say without words is perhaps the most powerful and under-utilized business skill in a highly competitive marketplace. Actions truly do speak louder than words, so when you do something as simple as attend a meeting, it’s up to you to make it matter.

Wedding Day Bliss and Your Mother-in-Law? Tips to create the perfect in-law transition Brides-to-be have an endless “to do” list
– invitations, dresses, showers, cake, flowers, ceremony location, reception details, etc. In all this hubbub, it’s easy to overlook a crucial bit of planning – how to deal with the idea of having a mother-in-law. This may feel like unchartered waters, since this woman is neither your mother nor your friend, but she’s going to be an important part of your life for a long time. So here are some great ways to start out this new relationship on the right foot:
part of the preparations – as well as the wedding itself. Whether you assign her minor or major duties, suggest something she can feel good about.
Ask her for input. Yes, this is your big day, but remember – her son is getting married! You don’t have to let her make the most critical decisions, but soliciting an opinion or two is a gracious gesture.
out what you are comfortable calling your future mother-in-law may not seem like a big deal to you, but it’s a really big deal to her. Talk with her about your decision so she can get used to it before the wedding.
Let her join in the fun. If you’re planning fun activities with your mother and the bridesmaids, invite your future motherin-law to come along. You don’t have to do it every time, but extending a few invitations assures her that you want her to be a part of your new life with her son.
Give her a piece of the action. Let her be

wedding plans, and share some of the stories with her. Many motherin-laws feel as though the wedding is happening around them, and they are just passive observers instead of key players. Help her have some special memories she can share with her friends, too. Above all, remember that your future mother-in-law is probably feeling just as awkward as you are. Be sure to act with kindness, compassion, and love. Trust me… your efforts will go a long way toward ensuring that everyone lives happily ever after! Hosting Dinner Parties This month we’re going to continue on the topic of being a great host with the focus on dinner parties. Let me start by helping you relax. You don’t have to be Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart to host a dinner party. You don’t have to have fine china or sterling silver salt-n-pepper shakers. Really! What you do need to have is motivation, some creativity (not much), and a desire to help your guests feel valued. I always appreciate and notice when a host has taken the time to think through the evening. A great host always knows how many people his/her home can comfortably handle. He/she also knows her friends and family well enough to invite those who he/ she thinks will enjoy each other and have a lot to talk about. A host is always aware of ambience. Sometimes you may need to rearrange furniture to help traffic flow. Sometimes you need candles, fun lights, or extra décor. Sometimes 74
EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2013
just finding the right music is all it takes to set the mood of the party. A good host knows how to balance this. A great host oftentimes will have a fun appetizer or hors d’oeuvres ready when the guests begin to arrive to make sure no one starves while waiting on dinner to be served. It also can become a conversational piece. Having a variety of drinks ready once the guests arrive makes everyone more comfortable. Surveys show that when a guest has something in their hand, they are more relaxed. Whether serving a sit-down dinner or a buffet-style dinner, the trick to success at the table is simple but really tasty. A dinner party is usually not the time to try out a new recipe that you’re unfamiliar with. New recipes have a way of surprising us, and usually a host doesn’t like surprises. Choose items you know you’re great at preparing so your stress level is as low as possible. Items you can prepare ahead of time and hold warmth, flavor, and texture for longer periods are usually ideal. It’s nice if the host doesn’t have to spend the whole evening in the kitchen. The host is always keenly aware of
conversation throughout the party. He/she knows when the subject needs to be changed or when it’s time to ask someone else a question so conversations are not hogged by only a few. A great host takes a peek in the powder room throughout the evening to make sure things are in order. As you smile, greet, and speak to every guest individually, you’re sure to have a successful evening. Regardless if the meat was cooked to perfection or the cake was moist enough, people want to feel valued, and they can see and feel that through the efforts that a host makes. Don’t be intimidated in hosting a dinner party. Just have fun and be yourself!

If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device which utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices which can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas
of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered, for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA last year, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, SmartLipo may be the answer. SmartLipo was the first laser cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). It is a minimally invasive procedure that is an enhancement to the well-established procedure known as tumescent microcannular liposuction. SmartLipo is an in-office procedure that is performed with local anesthesia and requires very little downtime. Most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated with this device. The neck,
arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of both the Liposonix and SmartLipo procedures in Knoxville. We would enjoy meeting with you to discuss which procedure would best suit your needs. Call to schedule a complimentary consultation and receive discounted pricing through the month of April.
