IHAVE BEEN road-tripping. A lot. Recently, I spent two weeks in the DC area - with one week back home in Knoxville in between! Both were family motived so worth the 8+ hours drive each way. The first excursion was a planned visit with Brett’s brother that included a Cafferty Family Reunion of sorts celebrating an 80th and a 20th birthday on the banks of the Chesapeake Baydelightful, as the breeze really helped with the heat! The second trip was for a funeral on my mom’s side of the family. It’s always nice to reconnect with relatives that haven’t been seen in a while, but it’s bittersweet to do so with a loss being the tie that binds. And in a room packed with people (Barbara was so humble that she would have been surprised at the turnout), there was absolutely no breeze, none at all, to help with that heat!
As a road trip family, the traveling by car has never bothered me (I slept through just about every car trip growing up), and I enjoy driving with the changing scenery enough that I can deal with bouts of heavy traffic. To me, the best part is the focused (or UNfocused) attention you can give each other. When Brett and I are home, our topics of conversation tend to be about the magazine, the house, and the To-Do List. It’s pleasant to be able to just talk without an agenda. My mom and I really enjoyed our time together also. We haven’t been able to just “visit” like that in years! While I would not have chosen to drive that far twice in a month’s time, both trips were worth the time and energy. Not only was I able to see and catch up with family that is not usually readily accessible, I also got the added benefit of reconnecting with my traveling companions - nice!

THE BIG KAHUNA Wing Festival has become one of the best culinary events in the region. Last year, the festival attendees enjoyed more than 100 different sauces from 25 different teams representing restaurants, cooking teams, businesses, and the University of Tennessee Culinary Institute. Attendees and visitors come from all across the region - all for the love of the “Buffalo Wing” and to raise money for charity.
This year, the 11th annual Big Kahuna Wing Festival celebrates the creation of the “Buffalo Wing,” which has become a national food icon. Invented in 1964 at the world-famous Anchor Bar by Teresa Bellisimo, the popularity of the chicken wing has made it America’s #1 appetizer. Last year alone, more than 20 billion wings were consumed by Americans - 1.25 billion on Super Bowl weekend alone.

WEST KNOXVILLE SHOWROOM
BY AUDREY FLOYD, SHOWROOM MANAGER
KELLYCO METAL DETECTORS
has been a trusted name in metal detecting since 1955. It was originally founded by Stuart Auerbach, whose interest was piqued after learning to use a military mine detector to find coins while stationed in Iwo Jima, Japan. He began using, trading, and selling surplus detectors after returning to the States. Kellyco has remained a familyowned business ever since. In 2020, my father and metal detector enthusiast, Jeremy Floyd, purchased the company to continue the Kellyco legacy alongside my mother and me.
We understand just how fun and exciting metal detecting can be, and with the Knoxville area being so rich in history, we know that there is still so much left undiscovered. Not only does Kellyco cater to those already familiar with the industry, we also strive to be a place for those who are “dipping their toes in the water.” Too much information at the on-set can be overwhelming, so Kellyco wants to make this hobby accessible for newbies also.
As a family, we are all about community and camaraderie, so we have a very specific vision for our new showroom. Our long-term goal is to establish Kellyco as a gathering place for hobbyists. Not only can you come here to find your new coil or detector, but when you find that ultimate “bucket list” target, we want to be the buddies you come to brag to! Kellyco wants to be the place for club meetings and hobby meetups. We are excited to now have the space and independence to bring our ideas to life!
Stop by our new showroom on Outlet Drive - we’d love the opportunity to show you what we do best! Kellyco Metal Detectors is also active on social media - YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook - so check us out online.

Design a Productive Workspace with a Family Home Office
BY CARRIE MCCONKEY, CARRIEMCCONKEY.COM
WHEN YOU were growing up, where did you study? Perhaps in your bedroom, on the couch, or sitting at the dining room table. What about your work today? Once again, you may be searching for a place to concentrate. With organized storage in a family home office you can give yourself - and your brood - a productive area to learn, work, and bond. Here are a few ideas:
Create Workstations That Work
Design multiple work areas to fit your family members with space-saving organized storage. Use shelves to separate desk spaces and give each person plenty of elbow room. Add cabinetry “lockers” to hold backpacks, school supplies, and electronics and slatwall with hooks and containers to house pencils, pens, scissors, rulers, and more. And don’t forget pull-out desk surfaces for more room to create.
Design a Multi-Purpose Island
A center island with stools fits the bill when working on large school projects and can also serve as a “conference table” for family pow-wows. On nights and weekends, the area can transform into a relaxing craft space or handy gift-wrapping surface. Custommeasured cabinets and shelves keep the area clutter-free, and
a power strip will keep the current flowing.
Build a Nook for More Than Books
A cozy bench seat with built-in bookcases will give family members a quiet place to land whether reading, attending virtual meetings, or simply journaling. To aid in concentration, choose relaxing hues from a wide range of storage component finishes, and add LED lights to reduce eyestrain day or night.
This school year, invest in a productive family home office that will cut down on clutter and increase inspiration. The design team at Closets by McKenry can help you maximize every inch of your space and every dollar in your budget. We’re not a national franchise, so your money will stay local to support the economy. Call today, and keep your loved ones from searching around the house for a place to work. Your home’s value - and everyone’s quality of life - will receive an A+!

Volunteers: Crafting Beauty from Generosity at Random Acts of Flowers
EACHWEEK, an exceptional group of volunteers gathers in our workshop, armed with creativity and compassion, to infuse fresh life into floral donations from our local partners. Generously provided by local grocery stores, florists, event planners, and individuals, a new batch of flowers and vases arrives almost daily. Once destined for disposal, these blooms now find purpose in the skilled hands of our dedicated volunteers. These 400+ individuals are the unsung heroes of Random Acts of Flowers Knoxville, generously donating their time and talent to collect, arrange, and deliver these floral gifts to local healthcare facilities.
“These flowers would end up in the trash, but we get to recycle them and pass them on, and it’s just such a wonderful, beautiful cycle.”
As they work, the volunteers pour their love and positive energy into every bouquet they create. Their dedication goes beyond arranging flowers; it’s about creating moments of beauty and connection for those who receive them. Each bouquet becomes a symbol of hope - a reminder that kindness can bloom even in the most unexpected places.
“The workshop is like a beehive of happiness - each week, every day,” said Debbie Fettig, Program Manager at RAF. “Getting to see all our volunteers making bouquets and making friendsit’s just a joyous time. I love flowers, and I love making people happy, and that’s what our mission is all about.”
The transformative power of these floral arrangements extends far beyond their physical beauty. For recipients, receiving a bouquet is about more than just flowers - it’s a tangible expression of care and support during challenging times. Whether it’s a patient in a hospital room, a resident in a nursing home, or a veteran in a rehabilitation center, these bouquets brighten their day and lift their spirits.
“I love flowers,” said Ellen Anderson, a RAF volunteer of five years. “Getting to use my creativity is wonderful, but the real reason I volunteer is the mission. It’s the sense that there are hundreds of people every week who are getting a lift from what we do. These flowers would end up in the trash, but we get to recycle them and pass them on, and it’s just such a wonderful, beautiful cycle.”
Random Acts of Flowers Knoxville is grateful for the dedication and passion of our volunteers who breathe life into each bouquet. Their commitment to spreading joy and kindness exemplifies the spirit of our organization and serves as a beacon of hope for all those we touch.

What is a hootenanny?
“I highly recommend Smart Home Fix. We used their services for a minor interior project and we were so impressed with their responsiveness, professionalism, and overall quality of work that we brought them back for a major kitchen + laundry room renovation. I could not be happier with the end result. I appreciate how responsive/ easy they are to get a hold of, and I never once worried about them coming back to finish a project. The work is high quality and they see every detail through to the end. I will absolutely use their services again in the future and
Hootenanny (n.): 1. An informal gathering where folk music is played in a party-like atmosphere (1950-60s). 2. Picking the Right Life Insurance Coverage
WOULDN’T IT BE nice to know that your loved ones will be protected if something unexpectedly happened to you? This peace of mind can be found through many means, but one of your best options is life insurance. It can be used to meet your family’s future needs by replacing your income or making sure the home mortgage is paid off.
Types of Life Insurance
Term life insurance is purchased for a set length of time (a “term”). Ranging from one to 10, 20 and 30 years, term life is a way to get the most coverage for the lowest cost. It has a low initial premium for a specified period of time.
One of the drawbacks is that after the specified term, the cost will increase. This increase is typically determined by the insured persons age at the given time. Also, this type of insurance does not build cash over time, meaning no returns on your paid premiums and no investment or savings options.
Whole life insurance, also known as permanent insurance, is meant to last your entire lifetime (as long as you keep paying the premium, of course) and increases in cash value. The premium remains the same, and the policy guarantees a set death benefit. The policy’s tax deferred cash value can grow each year and can be borrowed to help with emergencies. Just remember, the accumulation of cash value takes time.
Whole life insurance premiums are typically higher compared to term life insurance due to the lifelong coverage and cash value component. It is a great option if you’re seeking a consistent premium payment while guaranteeing financial stability for your loved ones.
Universal life insurance is a flexible form of permanent coverage that can last your lifetime and can also increase in cash value over time. Flexibility means that you can change policy aspects - the size of the premiums, whether the death benefit increases or stays level - which allows your coverage to change as your needs change.
Universal life has the ability to increase in cash value, depending on how it is funded. The cash value account earns interest and the taxes are deferred. With so many coverage options, universal life insurance can easily be included in a budget of any size.

AWELL-ORGANIZED pantry is the cornerstone of kitchen efficiency, enabling you to prepare dinner swiftly even on exhausting days. The Tailored Closet excels in designing pantry solutions that offer immediate visibility of your pantry contents, eliminating the frustration of searching through cluttered spaces. Our team of home organization experts collaborates with you to create a pantry that aligns with your unique requirements and budget.
Custom Solutions for Optimal Access
and Organization
Deep shelves can often become black holes where items get lost. To combat this, we integrate pull-out baskets and bins, ensuring easy access to every item. These pull-outs allow you to see your supplies at a glance, making it simple to grab what you need and keep track of your inventory.
Mini Wine Cellar
For wine enthusiasts, our custom wine racks craft a “mini wine cellar” within your pantry. This keeps your cherished wines in a dark, cool environment, stored on their sides to preserve their flavors and maintain bottle stability. This
thoughtful design not only protects your wine but also frees up kitchen space.
Spice Organization
Our meticulously designed spice racks provide a clear view of your inventory, preventing overstocking and ensuring you have all the spices you need for your favorite recipes. With everything visible at a glance, you’ll never run out of essentials like rosemary for that special chicken dish again.
Space for Large and Slender Items
Accommodating large, slender items such as trays and serving pieces can be challenging. We’ve dedicated specific areas within the pantry to store these items, ensuring they remain easily accessible and safe from damage. This not only protects your valuable kitchenware but also keeps your pantry neat and orderly.
Enhanced Functionality with Countertops and Drawers
To further enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your pantry, we offer built-in countertops and scoop-front drawers. These features provide additional workspace and storage options, making your
pantry a more versatile and attractive part of your kitchen. Countertops can be used for meal prep or as a spot to place small appliances, while scoop-front drawers offer easy access to everyday essentials.

TRUSTED PARTS, TRUSTED REPAIR
BY JESSIE G., REPAIR CUSTOMER
IWAS visiting college friends in Nashville during the summer and was parallel parked in the street in front of my friend’s house as usual. A guy in an older model (i.e. metal!) automobile drove down the street and side swiped three cars - one of them being mine! I was furious, as he didn’t even stop (a neighbor has the incident recorded on her Ring) and I could see that there was obvious damage to the street side of the bumper on my 2015 Hyundai Elantra.
After graduating from the University of Tennessee, I went to graduate school for Occupational Therapy at GA State University in downtown Atlanta. My parents upgraded my college 2007 Hyundai Tucson for my dad’s newer car as a safer, more reliable option for navigating the many roadways in Atlanta - and now it was dented and smashed on one side! I honestly thought the damage was only cosmetic, but after bringing it to Local Guys Collision in Bearden, I was informed that the damage was more “structural” than I had realized, making my bumper unsafe if a collision were to happen - not good!
Ken and his crew were able to order the appropriate factory-approved parts for the repair. I also had them do the brakes since I use them quite a bit in Atlanta traffic. The repair was so much faster than I had anticipated! And I knew that only safe, reliable parts were used in my repair.
The Elantra looked like a new car when I got it back - everything repaired, all shiny and cleaned up. I trusted these guys, and they delivered! I am a 20-something to whom they could have given the “run around,” but they were honest, straight forward about costs, and were intentionally concerned about my safety - wow!
My parents and I would highly recommend Ken and April at Local Guys Collision for their know-how, experience, and integrity. Seriously, who could ask for more?

DAY
The Kennedy Where Every Visit Feels Like a Special Occasion
KNOXVILLE HAS A new downtown spot that you won’t want to miss! The Kennedy is an elevated gastropub on the corner of Gay Street and Union Avenue that has quickly become the talk of the town. Open daily for lunch and dinner, they also offer live music and a latenight menu after 9 pm. Reservations are recommended but not required, and the bar is a prime spot to watch the expertly crafted cocktails come to life.
For those who have been inside this building in the past, you will be amazed to see what they have done with the space. I can’t get enough! Upon entering The Kennedy, you are immediately struck by the tasteful blend of contemporary design and vintage touches. On top of the ambiance, the attentive and knowledgeable staff further elevate the atmosphere, ensuring that every visit feels like a special occasion.
The Kennedy’s menu offers a variety of dishes for any palate, whether you’re feeling adventurous or like to stick to what you know. For starters, they offer mini handbreaded corn dogs or wings beside bacon
BY KELLY JO GROSSER LARSEN
wrapped dates with goat cheese, pumpkin seed pesto, and a Calabrian chili-tomato sauce (mouthwatering good!) for those who are a bit more adventurous.
For dinner, you have so many delicious options - from handhelds, to pizzas, to the
chef’s seasonal fish, which is a must try. I am a big pizza girl, so I usually order the pepperoni hot honey pizza; however, I sub the classic tomato sauce for the pink vodka sauce. It is heaven sent. Speaking of heaven sent, don’t forget to order truffle fries. They are sprinkled with white truffle oil, grana padano cheese, and served with a black garlic aioli sauce. Need I say more?
Complementing the food is an impressive drink selection, including beers, fine wines, signature cocktails, and mocktails that are as inventive as they are refreshing. The Britt Splits is a side-by-side cocktail so you get the best of both worlds when you can’t decide on just one. It’s my go-to! Shareable drink options are as fun to look at as they are to sip on. The Shake & Bake is served in a circular pitcher filled with exotic fruits, so it changes colors and flavors as it sits. What sets The Kennedy apart is its ability to cater to a diverse clientele while maintaining an air of exclusivity. Whether you’re seeking a casual evening out with friends, a romantic dinner for two, or a sophisticated venue for a business meeting, The Kennedy provides an ideal setting. Be sure to check out this must-visit destination soon and tell them Kelly’s Belly sent you!

OUR BACK-TO-SCHOOL preparations may include setting the clock to get the kids used to rising earlier, dusting off backpacks, shopping for school supplies, and replacing outgrown clothes. But do you have any back-to-school traditions that involve organization?
With storage solutions, you can transform your garage from a simple arrival and departure spot to a customized hub for your on-the-go family. Here’s how to start:
Anticipate the Change in Season
Get your garage back in order after heavy use during the summer. Evaluate whether items need to be kept, donated, or disposed of. Clean, repair, and re-organize what remains into zones based upon frequency of use. Now is a great time to consider custom storage to make the process quick and easy.
Keep Things Clean with a Mud Room
Your garage is the perfect place for a mud room, providing a designated space for the family to drop off backpacks, jackets, and sports equipment before entering the house. Add hooks, cabinets, and cubbies to store inclement weather items and pet supplies, and don’t forget a handy bench seat with storage underneath.
Suit Up for Fall Sports
Organize the household’s fall sports equipment with versatile slatwall. Bins, racks, and accessories will keep soccer balls, golf bags, mountain bikes, and more off the floor and close at hand. And for game days, your garage can become the ultimate tailgating spot with custom countertops for food and drinks, an attractive and spill-proof epoxy polyaspartic floor, and overhead storage to keep seasonal items out of the way of cheering fans.

IT’S POTATO SALAD season! Whether you’re going to a picnic at the park, joining a backyard barbecue, or having a simple family dinner, potato salad is always a hit. Here are tips to make the best potato salad of your life.
Start with the right type of potato. While any potato can be used for potato salad, russets and yellows are the best options because they can absorb the dressing and flavors the most. Fingerlings and petites can also be good choices, and as a bonus, you don’t have to cut them.
Cut and soak potatoes before cooking. Cut potatoes into 1.5-2-inch chunks, as consistently as possible. If your chunks are too small, you’ll end up with mashed potatoes. Keep the peel on for extra flavor and nutrients. Soaking your potatoes in cold water before cooking will help prevent oxidation and remove excess starch. Don’t soak them for long - just a minute or two will do the job.
Simmer - don’t boil! Boiling your potatoes will cause them to break apart. Simmer them until they’re fork-tender. However, when in doubt, overcooked is preferable to undercooked. Season the water for added flavor. Add flavor to the potatoes as they cook. A few recommendations:
• Generously salt your water.
• Use vegetable stock.
• Add lemon juice, garlic, and other seasonings to the water.
Drain well, but don’t cool completely. When the potatoes are fork-tender, drain them well and let the steam escape. Get rid of as much excess moisture as you can. But don’t cool completely! While the potatoes are still warm, put them on a baking sheet, and sprinkle on some acid like apple cider, rice wine, or red wine vinegars. Pickle juice is another great acid choice! Adding the acid when the potatoes are warm maximizes the flavor. Avoid white vinegar, which is too strong, or balsamic vinegar, which will add a weird color. Afterward, sprinkle salt over the potatoes, unless you used pickle juice, which is already salty. Make the dressing separately. No matter what dressing base you choose (e.g., mayo, oil, etc.), don’t combine all the dressing ingredients with the potatoes. Make the dressing in advance and then mix with your potatoes once seasoned. If you’re using a dairy-based dressing, let the potatoes cool before mixing.
A classic potato salad dressing has mayonnaise, mustard, and some type of acid (like vinegar or citrus juice) and relish. You want the dressing to have a more liquid consistency before adding it to the dish. The starch in the potatoes will thicken the dressing and make it creamier. Add seasonings like paprika, salt, pepper, parsley, and dill to amp up the flavor. Bonus tip: Make a little extra dressing to give new life to leftover potato salad the next day.
Give it some texture. For a classic, all-American potato salad, add hard-boiled eggs to get a great mix of textures. Celery is another option to give you some crunch.
Serve at room temperature. Avoid serving cold potato salad in general, but it’s particularly important to bring potato salad with oil-based dressing to room temperature, because oil can harden when chilled.
Play with variations on your salad. Try using different flavor profiles and ingredients to spice things up. A current fan favorite is a potato salad inspired by Mexican street corn with cotija cheese, charred corn, lime juice, and the perfect amount of heat.
In addition to being delicious, potato salad is a showcase for America’s favorite vegetable. You’ll be happy to know that a medium (5.3 oz), skin-on potato has more potassium than a banana, 3 grams of plant-based protein, and almost one-third of the vitamin C we need daily - so enjoy!

BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLE POTATO SALAD
COURTESY OF POTATOGOODNESS.COM
Serves 12
Ingredients:
• 2-1/4 pounds yellow potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes
• As needed cold water + 2 tablespoons salt
• 3 garlic cloves, smashed
• 1/4 cup champagne or rice vinegar
• 3/4 cup mayonnaise
• 1/4 cup yellow mustard
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1/3 cup Bread and Butter pickles, diced 1/4 inch
• 1/3 cup red onions, diced 1/4 inch, rinsed with cold water
• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
• 2 teaspoons celery seed
• 1/4 cup green onions, sliced
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
In a large heavy bottomed pot, add the potatoes, enough cold water to just cover the potatoes by an inch, the salt, and garlic. Turn the heat onto high. When the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the potatoes until they are a little more than fork tender but not falling apart (about 20-25 minutes).
Drain the potatoes and spread them out evenly on a baking sheet to help them cool more rapidly. Sprinkle the potatoes with the vinegar while they are still slightly warm. While the potatoes cool, make the dressing.
In a large bowl, combine the mayonnaise, yellow mustard, sour cream, diced pickles, onions, dill, celery seed, green onions, salt, and black pepper. Combine the ingredients until they are well mixed and set aside.
When the potatoes are fully cooled, add them to the bowl with the dressing and mix well to combine. The potato salad is ready to serve but is even better after 1 or 2 days in the fridge. Before serving, garnish with green onions and a couple slices of bread and butter pickles so your guests have an idea of what is in it.
Pro Tip: It’s important to get in there and mash up some of the spuds which will result in a creamy potato texture in the sauce.

A Simple Beach Vacation Becomes a Life Lesson
BY DR. JIM BAILEY
AFRIEND ONCE told me, “Until your kids can drive, it’s a family trip, not a vacation.” It’s sort of a Murphy’s Law for life with children. Well, recently Murphy showed up at my family beach vacation and taught me something that is going to make my life better.
After an eight-hour drive, we arrived after check-in to find the condominium uncleaned and without air conditioning. I wasn’t happy. However, before I slipped into my “Crisis Intervention Super Suit” and took control, I decided it might be better to let my wife and son handle it. They got things resolved, but the experience revealed some important ideas.
First, I became aware of my belief that it was my personal responsibility that the vacation be wonderful for everyone in the family. Therefore, every problem that arose required me to rescue my family and become “vacation hero dad.” Until the crisis arose, I hadn’t even realized I had that belief, and though it wasn’t easy to relinquish control, I decided that maybe my wife and son were perfectly capable of handling the problems. As it turned out, they were.
I’m not going to get into the psychological stuff that drove my need to be the family hero, but challenging my (erroneous) belief gave me the freedom to NOT take a role that would have added to my personal exhaustion.
Challenging my belief also brought the benefit of a changed point of view - my perspective. My belief fed a perspective that these minor delays were catastrophes with the power to elevate my heart rate and blood pressure and ruin my mood. Instead, I was able to be a calm, supportive husband and father and give my wife and son an opportunity to (once again) show their own competencies and be the family heroes.
Finally, my challenged belief and changed perspective shifted my understanding of situations - my perceptions. I no longer viewed the events as win-or-lose threats to the family vacation but, rather, unforeseen random challenges that didn’t deserve the power to determine my/our happiness.
Each day our beliefs inform our perspectives, and our perspectives influence our perceptions of the events of our lives. Without thinking about it, we perceive, interpret, and react to the events of our days based on a set of beliefs about how
our lives and the world work. My doctoral advisor once told me, “Jim, all human behavior is purposeful. Our challenge is to understand what is (what beliefs are) driving someone’s behavior.” That truth applies to our own behavior, too.
For example, if you believe that life is a win-or-lose game, then every daily event is an-opportunity-to-gain OR risk-of-losing what is or could be yours; every challenge and interpersonal encounter is a chance to become more-or-less in the world. BUT, if you believe life (or a benevolent higher power) provides for you and guides and shapes the events of your life so that you can become more or better, then your challenges and encounters represent opportunities for personal growth and impact on the world. The two belief systems result in wholly different behaviors in individuals and societies (such as selfishness or benevolence) by changing the perspectives, perceptions, and actions of the people who hold them.
What are the beliefs that drive your perspectives, perceptions, and behaviors? How you react to the events of your day, the news you hear, and the words and actions of the people in your life reveals your underlying beliefs. If you want to change your reactions to a situation, you must first understand the beliefs that feed your perspectives and perceptions, then work to change those beliefs.
A word to the wise: Most of us become very attached to our beliefs and the resulting perceptions, so it’s often easier/wiser to first work on yourself rather than trying to change someone else’s beliefs. That said, most people are quite unaware of the beliefs that fuel their perspectives, perceptions, and actions, so self-awareness is also key to changing yourself.
A simple start - ask yourself, “What or whom do I perceive as a threat to my happiness, my dreams, my safety or security?” (By the way, a belief that something or someone is a threat to you will cause you to live a defensive life, with the higher stress levels and negative physical and emotional health effects that stress causes.) Then ask yourself, “Are these beliefs based on truth, or have I just accepted them as true?” Another great question to ask is, “Do these beliefs help me have a better life, or do they make my life more difficult?”
In the end, I know I had a better vacation because I challenged and began to change a belief, of which I was unaware, that had been unwittingly driving my behaviors. Changing that belief allowed me to be a freer, more relaxed me. I know my family appreciated that. Now I just have figure out what to do with my Crisis Intervention Super Suit.

ERIC JOHNSON
EXTRAORDINARY GUITARIST: CHECK. MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST: CHECK.
VOCALIST: CHECK. SONGWRITER: CHECK.
BY RANDY PATTERSON, BOOMEROCITY.COM
IN CONCERT • BIJOU THEATRE • AUGUST 13TH
AUSTIN, TEXAS’ Eric Johnson pretty much has it all as far as musical talent is concerned. It should come as no surprise being that he grew up in a family who loved musichis mom a pianist and his dad a whistling champion. Johnson’s musical weapon of choice from the time he was 11 was the guitar. His guitar influences were greats like Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, and Jimi Hendrix - the latter of which we’ll dig deeper into in a moment.
Johnson released his first of 12 studio albums (along with five live albums) at the magic age of 27. We interviewed him in Everything Knoxville’s October 2018 edition after his second album, Ah Via Musicom, blew the world away with the amazing song “Cliffs of Dover” that is still considered one of the best guitar instrumentals in rock. To hear him perform this song live is a musical feast of the gods.
Knoxvillians will get a chance to experience exactly that on August 13th at the historic Bijou Theatre during Johnson’s Straight Up Tones of Blue tour. Fans will also be able to see him perform on October 15th in Nashville as part of a tour commemorating one of his biggest influences: Jimi Hendrix. The tour is the incredible Experience Hendrix tour featuring Eric Johnson and other big names in music.
Johnson chatted about both tours, starting with his solo tour.
“I’m going to be going out on a two-week tour with Tom Brecklein (drums) and Roscoe Beck (bass). I have some new music I’m working on, and I just wanted to get out and kind of play it for some people and see what works and what doesn’t. So it’s just kind of an experimentation thing. I’m going to do a bunch of new stuff. And then I guess do the Hendrix tour in later September and October.” Later, Johnson added, “I’m going to do a couple of different things this time, but I usually have a kind of a standard repertoire of ones I like to do, but I’ll try to do a couple of new things this time.”
Segueing to the Experience Hendrix tour, Johnson shared some of his thoughts and insights about being part of a tour that salutes one of his guitar heroes.
“Well, I’ve always loved playing Jimi’s
music, and I always have since I was a kid. I just... tried to play it. So, it’s kind of like it’s nothing different for me to go play his music. And every time I do, I learn something about his approach or what he did. And so, it’s always an honor and a privilege for me to do that.”
Have there been any surprises or revelations in learning Hendrix’s music?
“Well, it’s unique. And it’s not only great lead playing, but some of the tones and the rhythm guitar playing. I mean, he was a great rhythm guitarist, and that was important to him. The main nucleus or body of the song being the rhythm and how he approached that and orchestrated the songs, you could tell that was a really... it was an integral part of what he did. And he didn’t just shred on guitar. He had this whole orchestrated thing going on. You can really look at how he approached it as music, and it just happened to be on guitar. But I think the bigger picture was he was a music writer, and he used the guitar for his medium.”
Does Eric Johnson have a favorite Jimi Hendrix song that he plays?
“Wow, you know, I love them all. ‘Axis: Bold As Love’ is great. ‘May This Be Love’ is a great one - so beautiful. ‘Spanish Castle Magic’ is fun.”
As if the two tours didn’t keep Johnson busy enough, he revealed that he was working on new music.
“Well, I’m working on several different projects at once, but the main one I want to put out next is kind of a blues-flavored record. It’s how I learned to play guitar initially when I was a kid, studying all the blues
greats.” Later adding, “And so I want to kind of return to that and try to give a little bit of credence to that. So, I’m writing songs that kind of are in that vein.”
Follow Johnson’s hectic tour schedule by visiting EricJohnson.com. As of this writing, a few tickets for the Knoxville solo show at the Bijou Theatre are still available, as are tickets for the Experience Hendrix Nashville show.

From his early days touring in cramped vans and playing in front of tiny bar crowds to the packed venues he performs in today, Boland’s uncompromising approach has grown his profile dramatically, especially in the past handful of years. Add to that the legions of musicians who are influenced by Boland, and his impact on the scene is undeniable.
Since coming together in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Boland and his tightknit crew have earned a devoted following that’s swelled far beyond the band’s red dirt roots. At a Stragglers show, oil patch roughnecks, hippies, college kids, and intelligentsia all sway sideby-side like a traveling reincarnation of Austin’s Armadillo World Headquarters in its cosmic cowboy, Willie Nelson, heyday.
The band’s earlier releases, such as Pearl Snaps and Truckstop Diaries, are foundations of their career, earning acclaim for their rare storytelling. These albums not only propelled the group into the spotlight but also laid the foundation for a dedicated fanbase that has grown with them over the years. As the band evolved, subsequent releases like Comal County Blue, Squelch, and the most recent, The Light Saw Me, continue to showcase their musical prowess and lyrical depth, solidifying their reputation as influential voices with their signature blend of social consciousness, self-awareness, and swing.
Knoxville is getting ready for the gritty, thundering country sound Jason Boland and the Stragglers have sharpened over the past quarter century. While the Stragglers draw from rock and folk, make no mistake: they traffic in unfiltered, unfettered honkytonk, raw and lean.
“We pay homage, but we don’t want to copy or be a throwback act,” Boland says. “All you can do is try to take the music that inspires you and take it further. And make it personal.”
Boland and the Stragglers stack their smart, road-ready outlaw country that is fueled by fiddle, steel, and drums, alongside creative risks that flirt with punk and psychedelic sounds. That mix of subtle musical sophistication and unruly Oklahoma junkyard pedigree has resulted in some of the best independent honky tonk in recent memory.

INATIONAL PARKS Within a Day’s Drive of Knoxville
N 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created the National Park Service to help protect natural and historic lands and phenomenons for future generations. The U.S. national parks showcase our country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage for visitors from around the globe. There are now 63 national parks that hold endangered plants and animals, archaeological sites, and miles upon miles of trails.
Our beloved Great Smoky Mountains National Park became official in 1926. The New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia became the most recently christened national park in late 2020. These and quite a few other parks are within a day’s drive of Knoxville. The National Park Service has an excellent
website at NPS.gov full of everything you ever wanted or needed to know about visiting one of the park locations.
1. Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave, Kentucky
- A little more than 3 hours from Knoxville
Our closest state park - aside from the Great
Smoky Mountains NP “right down the road” - is Mammoth Cave National Park. In addition to the amazing cave tours, there are night sky viewing programs, hiking trails (many at less than half mile!), and at least 4 accessible historic cemeteries.
2. New River Gorge
West Virginia near Glen Jean - A little more than 4 hours from Knoxville
7 5 8 1 6 4 2 3 1 2 3 4
An easy boardwalk trail leads to the New River Gorge Bridge vista with many more hiking trails available. Lovely scenic drives, along with outdoor activities, assures that there is something to please everyone! Because this fairly new park covers more than 50 miles of the river with 3 separate visitor centers, the NPS recommends using the coordinates on their website for directions as opposed to following standard GPS.
3. Congaree
Hopkins, South Carolina - 4.5ish hours from Knoxville
With astonishing biodiversity and the largest expanse of old growth bottomland forest remaining in the southeastern United States, this
swampy ecosystem can be seen by a fairly flat boardwalk loop trail. Or get up close and personal in a canoe or kayak! Twenty-five miles of trails will delight birdwatchers and fisherfolk.
4. Shenandoah
Luray, Virginia - A little under 6 hours from Knoxville
The beautiful Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue
freedom in the Old Courthouse located on the grounds. While it is not your typical park, the arch’s (“Willie Wonka”ish) interior tram ride to the top are worth the trip. Virtual tours are available online for those less brave!
6. Cuyahoga Valley
Ridge Mountains inside the park. From Big Meadows to Old Rag Mountain, hiking trails and picnic areas abound. The park’s Ranger programs and historic exhibits are available both in person and virtually for those who can’t make the trip.
5. The Gateway Arch
St. Louis, Missouri - A little under 7 hours from Knoxville
Believe it or not, the arch became a national park in 2018 - the smallest of parks with less than 200 acres. The park is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the west, the pioneers who shaped our history, and Dred Scott, who sued for his
Northern Ohio between Cleveland and Akron - 7.5 hours from Knoxville
The smooth Towpath Trail, the landmark route first traveled by mules and Ohio & Erie Canal workers, has connections to many of the parks natural and historic sites - great for strolling or biking. In addition to birding, fishing, and paddling, try a scenic train ride or a Canalway Quest to collect unique stamps.
(temperature, taste, color, odorless) in the U.S. The ancient thermal springs, mountain views, incredible geology, forested hikes, and abundant creeks - all in the middle of townmake Hot Springs National Park a unique and beautiful destination.
7. Indiana Dunes
Indiana’s Lake Michigan coast just southeast of Chicago - A little less than 8 hours from Knoxville
This is another fairly recent newcomer as a national park. Added in early 2019, it sports more than 50 miles of trails that lead through shifting sand dunes, quiet woodlands, sunny prairies, and lush wetland - all in one park! The lure of cooler temperatures and self-guided excursions are awfully tempting! Swim, paddle, or just enjoy the beachy sunsets.
8. Hot Springs
Hot Springs, Arkansas - About 8.5 hours from Knoxville
This is the only national park that protects a unique combination of lithology, geologic structure, and water sources that produce the only nonvolcanic geothermal springs of such high quality
There are so many more designated historic sites, scenic trails, rivers & recreational areas, battlefields, and monuments in most U.S. states, so be sure to check the National Parks website before you travel. Their website also has helpful facts that include parking pass info, current weather conditions, recreation options, and park history - all conveniently accessed by state location or park name. There is even an app for that! 5 6 8 7

The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection
KNOXVILLE IS VERY fortunate to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (not to be confused with the Frank H. McClung Museum, a wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee). The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library and housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street.
The McClung is home to a large collection of regional history and historic documents and is a top-notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to web-based genealogical databases, and that’s just the beginning.
The McClung makes it easy for anyone to visit. It is open every day, but the times will differ depending on the day of the week. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung.
If you are starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, plan a visit and take one of the free introduction to internet genealogy classes. Find out who lived in your house in 1925 or check out where your grandmother lived in the 1940 U.S. Census. Make a day of it, and while you’re downtown, have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General Store, or see a show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. So many changes have been taking place in downtown Knoxville, and your research on local history at the McClung will most likely make you want to explore more of this historic area.
For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comfort of your own home with its online digital collection. Spend hours hunting down historic images from Knoxville and East Tennessee. You can even purchase photos in a number of different ways.
Our favorite collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection taken by Knoxville’s own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. This collection has an estimated 75,000 negatives, providing a visual legacy of Knoxville and East Tennessee from 1907 until 1960. Preservation printing of these negatives has been the major focus of the McClung Historical Collection for two decades. Jim Thompson (1881-1976) and his younger brother, Robin Thompson (1895-1977), were business
partners from 1920 to 1926 as Thompson Brothers. Both men were pioneer commercial photographers. By the late 1920s, Jim’s (Jim Thompson Co.) and Robin’s (Robin Thompson, Inc.) photographs were appearing in local and national commercial publications. The next rainy day that has you looking for something to do, visit cmdc.knoxlib.org/ digital/collection and start exploring.
The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is located on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Open every day, admission is free to the public. For more information, call 865-215-8801 or visit KnoxCountyLibrary.org/Calvin-M-McClung-Collection.
Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.
TALL VERBENA ATTRACTS BUTTERFLIES
AND OTHER POLLINATORS
BY SHALENA DURKOT, GARDEN COORDINATOR
POLLINATOR PLANTS
are a hot commodity, and who doesn’t want to attract beautiful butterflies to their garden? While there are many important native species to incorporate, consider mixing in other plants as well. One of my longtime favorites is Verbena bonariensis , and it is a butterfly magnet. Goldfinches also have been spotted feasting on them.
Verbena bonariensis , commonly referred to as tall verbena, Brazilian verbena, or vervain, has pale purple blooms throughout summer up until frost. It stands tall and proud in the landscape, at about four to five feet, but does not overshadow its companions. The strong stems and airy nature make it perfect to sprinkle in amongst other plants, especially during the dog days of summer.
Tall verbena is native to South America. It is a tender perennial hardy from zones 7 to 11 but can self-seed, making it work in cooler regions. However, this has raised concerns about naturalization in some southern states and California where seedlings grow more freely.
Plants are easily grown in full sun with average to moist welldrained soil. They tolerate hot, dry conditions and have few insect or disease problems other than powdery mildew. If powdery mildew becomes a problem, they can be cut back. This may also be done if stems are broken to encourage more blooms or to help control re-seeding. However, it is best to leave stems intact if growing in colder regions.
Flowers of tall verbena are quarter inch tubes set in two- to threeinch rounded clusters. They are perfect for attracting pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. Plant them in mixed borders, meadows, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens. Be sure to check out these dwarf cultivars perfect for container
growing and compact space:
• ‘Lollipop’ - grows one to two feet
• ‘Meteor Shower’ - award winner, grows 20 to 30 inches, plants set little seed
• ‘Vanity’ - All-American Selection winner, grows to 24-30 inches Verbena bonariensis can be found at all three UT Gardens locations. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson, Tennessee. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the UT Gardens are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit utia.tennessee.edu/state-botanical-garden.
TAugust in the Garden
HIS HAS BEEN a very hot and mostly dry summer so far. I think I have had to water everything in my yard almost every day since the first of June. Even trees that have been in the ground for years have started to droop, and there are cracks in the soil that I can stick my thumb in. Here at Meadow View, it takes three people all day to get everything watered, so I am like a mother hen asking them if they have had enough water themselves!
I am sure many of you are in the same situation. You may even notice that your plants’ appearance has changed. When it stays above 90 degrees for several days, many plants shift into survival mode. They may stop growing, and the leaves they do put on may be smaller. Blooms may also be smaller. Wilt may occur even if the soil is damp because the leaves are losing more water through evaporation than the roots can pull up.
That was a long and meandering way of saying that I understand that it is hard to make yourself go out and water or weed or deadhead when the sun is roasting you like a Costco chicken, but your plants need help. If you don’t adequately water your plants to get them through this stage, be prepared to replace them this fall.
Here are the things you need to know and do to help your plants survive:
n Water deeply. If you have a sprinkler, it will need to run for at least 30 minutes every other day. If you have a drip system, put a small container under one section so you know how much water is actually getting into the soil. It should add up to at least an inch per week. If you are hand watering, small plants can drink a gallon per day, shrubs can drink 3-5 gallons, and a tree can drink 10-30 gallons per day. Laying a hose at the base of a tree and letting it trickle for 20-30 minutes will help.
n Black mulch can increase the temperature of your flower beds, so plant and water accordingly. Rock will also increase the temperature and may change soil pH.
n Closely monitor your yard. It is much easier to treat problems when you catch them early. This is also a great time to evaluate what has happened in your yard this year so far. What has done well? What hasn’t? What needs to be moved, removed, cut back, fertilized, treated, or composted? Do you need to add or subtract? It may be too hot for the actual work, but you can dream!
n Can you still plant? Yes, but it requires a little more effort. We still have plenty of beautiful plants, so pull up ugly annuals and replace them with fresh color. Add perennials to sunny or shady locations.
BY LISA GRUGIN
You can even plant trees and shrubs as long as you are prepared to water them well.
n Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and shothole disease are making an appearance everywhere. Your first round of defense is removing infected leaves and making sure they do not remain on the ground. Pruning (carefully) to improve air circulation will help with airborne diseases, and spraying with a fungicide will kill fungal spores.
n Check for bugs, but make sure the ones you are trying to kill are actually bad before you start spraying.
n Leaf damage from insects, disease, and critters does not heal. The plant will push the affected leaves off and grow new ones.
n Summer is not the time to do major pruning of shrubs and trees. It is simply too stressful. You can take off diseased branches and do some minor shaping, but save the bigger jobs until the plants are dormant. If someone is doing surgery on you, wouldn’t you rather be asleep?
n Cut back perennials and annuals that have gotten leggy. Many will have new growth at the base, so be careful not to cut that off.
n Keep deadheading those annuals! Some of them could use a haircut and fertilizer. Many will perk back up as the temperatures cool, so don’t give up. On the other hand, don’t be afraid to compost them and replace them with new plants.
n Did you plant vegetables? How did they do? If you didn’t enjoy the success you had hoped for, come in and talk to us and let’s see if we can figure out what went wrong. Sometimes the solution is very simple, like plant rotation or installing drip irrigation.
n Isn’t it amazing how fast the weeds can take over? Keep pulling and spraying them and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent.
n The fall bird migration will start soon. Keep your bird feeders and birdbaths clean and full so that visiting birds can have an Airbnb at your house!
Our fall merchandise has started arriving, so stop in and see what is new!

New Exhibitions Opening
THE ARTS & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 2-30. Most of the works on exhibition will be for sale and may be purchased by visiting in person or the online shop at KnoxAlliance.store.
WIN THE FUTURE! in the Lower Gallery
WIN THE FUTURE!, created by Jake Barton, is an immersive experience allowing visitors the opportunity to interact with their future selves and see how their current decisions shape Knoxville’s future health and well-being. As visitors make choices, they will walk among the trees of the Smokies; then, while inside an interactive DreamCube, they may be invited to extinguish a forest fire, clear flooded streets, or plant virtual flowers. This unique experience, focused on the climate crisis, helps visitors discover actions that can change the future, for better or worse. Preview the DreamCube at TheAccelerator.Studio/DreamCube.
Jake Barton designs museum experiences that bring complex topics to life, inspiring reflection and action, as evidenced through his design of Planet Word, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center.
Emporium Center August 2
Smorgasbord 1 by Drew Turner in the Display Case
Artist statement excerpt: This exhibition is 12 years in the making and came together from my past works throughout those years. It is a portrait of my inspirational process and a look across the variety of objects that I have challenged myself to make (mostly in glass with a few ceramic pieces). I have always enjoyed leveraging my creative talents to make things that I like just because I like them. This exhibition displays some of my diverse interests and burning desire to turn them into art.
Drew Turner initially worked in clay, taking classes at Farragut High School, Mighty Mud Studios, and Pellissippi State. He has also taken classes in metalworking, wire wrapping, soldering, and enameling. For the past 10 years, Turner has worked with blowing glass and stained glass in panels - all while pursuing Engineering degrees from Pellissippi State and Tennessee Tech.
Life is a Fairy Tale by Steven L. Griffin on the North Wall Artist statement excerpts:
Dogwood
Regional Exhibition in the Upper Gallery
Hosted by Dogwood Arts, the Dogwood Regional Exhibition showcases artwork of all styles and genres created by emerging and professional artists working within a seven-state region. This year, they received 403 artwork submissions from 160 artists working throughout the Southeast. The 2024 exhibition, juried by Knoxville-based artist Chris McAdoo, will include work by 49 artists from six states.
In addition to the display at the Emporium, the Dogwood Regional Exhibition includes largescale installations in the Dogwood Arts Gallery located just down the street from the Emporium at 123 W. Jackson Avenue in the Old City.
Classic fairy tales are deep and complex, reflecting reality: light and dark, good and evil, life and death. Unlike modern interpretations, they don’t sugarcoat the hard truths to make them more palatable. Monsters, tricksters, and haters still exist; not every story ends happily ever after. Fairy tales offer a treasure trove of human experience and wisdom that we can learn from and apply to our lives, hopefully avoiding the common pitfalls found by those who’ve gone before. Utilizing a rotary tool and various sanders, the wood pieces are shaped, textured, finished, and fitted together, resulting in a three-dimensional effect.

Farhad Naimy trained professionally as an engineer and later brought his passion for architecture, design, and creative use of space to his custom-built multi-million dollar homes that now span across the landscape in San Francisco and other cities throughout the Pacific Northwest. His love of the Eastern Tennessee mountains and his family brought him back to Knoxville, where he draws from his international experiences of a lifetime to create art. Naimy is captivated with Fluid Art because of his deep connection to nature and color. In both there is infinite variety and, like love, infinite expressions.
The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. For more information, call 865-523-7543 or visit KnoxAlliance.com.

IHAVE HAD the adventure of working in very different businesses in my career, with exposure to all kinds of situations, people, technology, and have gained an appreciation (and some great stories) of the quirks and cultures that come with a given industry or specific business. The short list includes a restaurant, a medical office, construction, retail, real estate, sales and management, residential renovations, and during Covid, a jump to publishing (of all things!).
My primary role from my mid 20s-40s was a 15-year career in the same industry. Due to an ownership change in the business that I helped start and was managing, I found myself facing a hard decision of “what’s next.” I loved what I had been doing - a mix of technology, problem solving, customer interaction, and managing dayto-day operations were aspects I truly enjoyed.
As I had been in a very specific “niche,” to remain in Knoxville would require a change to a new industry. Both an exciting and unsettling time. Looking back, my years of being in one business unfairly (but understandably) shaped my perspective on what I should explore or feel qualified to pursue.
The transition was bumpy - and further complicated by the 2007 recession.
I pursued an entirely different industry and was enthusiastic to get started. At first, it was a “fish out of water” experience - but within a short time, I came to realize that sales, client relationships, and the basics of business operations and accounting were all transferable skills that had a place in contributing to this new role. It was both a relief and an encouragement!
What I have learned - primarily after age 40 in my case - is that we possess a much broader skill set and base of knowledge than we may recognize. Our experiences, ability to think and reason, a cooperative attitude, and work backgrounds all have common threads. The colors may be different, but it’s still thread.
It is very natural to be hesitant or fearful in making big decisions or changes when we can’t see around the next corner, and I have been there more than once!
My reason for sharing this is to encourage those who may be on the fence, or fearful of change, and feeling unprepared to recognize that you are better equipped than you are likely giving yourself credit for and are more capable than you think.
The popular book What Color is Your Parachute? has exercises to help recognize values and transferable skills, and local pros like Dr. Jim Bailey are an invaluable resource. You got this!
