EK: Andrea, provide us with a little history of elle Boutique, and tell us about your involvement. Andrea: elle opened in May 2007 by Jennifer Douglas and Sarah Reid with a customer focus and vision of being a comfortable shopping environment, providing fashion forward, unique pieces that the Knoxville market didn’t offer. That vision continues today, as elle’s number one focus is our relationships with customers and meeting their individual needs.

I started working for elle in April 2010 as a Sales Manager and loved every minute of it. When the girls decided to sell the store in the spring of 2012, it was the perfect opportunity for me to achieve my dream. Retail was something I’ve always wanted to be involved in, and I’ve had that entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, coming from a long line of family members who have owned their own businesses. Despite working many more hours, it has been an easy and fun transition in owning elle, and I’m so grateful to our local customers that continue to encourage and support me.

EK: We understand you have a major announcement that you’d like to share with our readers. Andrea: Yes! After a great deal of research and thought, I’m really excited to share that elle will be relocating to Cherokee Plaza! This move is something I have been working on for months now, and I am so happy to finally let my customers in on the news. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the Cherokee Plaza family and to being more conveniently located for all of our elle customers in Knoxville and the surrounding communities. While Turkey Creek played a role in our early success, we’re looking forward to being in an area with a little less traffic congestion and being in a more centralized location. Bearden offers a shopping experience unique to all of Knoxville with many great stores and a high level of energy that all of us at elle are excited to be a part of. EK: When is the big move happening? Andrea: Opening day is Monday, August 5, at 10 am. We will remain open in our current spot until 6 pm on Saturday, August 3. The store hours in the new location will stay the same – Monday-Saturday 10 am to 6 pm – and the new store’s address is 5508 Kingston Pike, Suite 130, Knoxville, TN 37919. Come visit us at our new location, and stay tuned for our grand opening party and sale info to come! EK: How would you best describe the fashions that elle features? Andrea: When people step into the store, I want them to find quality pieces that they haven’t seen anywhere else. I carry a lot of great denim, which for so many of us works from day to night year round. I work hard at making sure elle offers a selection that has a little something for everyone who walks in from tees, tanks, night out tops, travel wear, amazing, reasonably priced jewelry, and much more. EK: Does elle Boutique feature a target age range in the apparel it offers? Also, what about available sizes? Andrea: Our customer age ranges anywhere from high school girls to women in their late 60s. I buy specifically keeping each age group in mind, even specific customers in mind, buying different styles suitable for different ages, fits, and body types. As far as sizing goes, we usually only buy one size in each style to maintain uniqueness so it decreases the chances of women running into 10 people wearing the same dress to the same event. If we don’t have exactly what you need in stock, feel free to ask us for help with a special order. Special orders and requests are helpful, and I welcome the feedback. EK: In what apparel markets do you shop in addition to Atlanta? Andrea: I love going to the New York market but have plans to go to the Vegas and LA markets in the upcoming year, which

may become my new favorites! EK: Can you describe your price points? Andrea: elle provides high-quality clothing that will last, so your invested dollars are well spent. My sister (who is my buying partner) and I spend a lot of time discovering great quality lines but also ones at all different price points to meet the individual needs of all our customers. We understand that a college girl may want to grab a dress for a weekend event and not spend more than $100, and we can offer that, while a career woman may have a gala to attend and want to invest the money in a specialty piece that is a little pricier, which we offer as well. EK: Just one observation, but you seem to know most of your customers by name. How would you describe the elle shopping experience, and just how important are your relationships with the women who shop at elle? Andrea: The relationship I have with our customers is my favorite part about owning a small business and is where I focus my energy. I want the shopping experience for women at elle to be comfortable and happy and where women can come to escape the busyness of their day, whether that be work, children, relationships, or whatever they have going on. I want everyone to feel welcome to come in and just browse the store for as little or as long as they want and look at fun clothing and accessories. If I don’t know you, I look forward to becoming friends and helping you in any way that I can! EK: Any future plans or events you’d like to share with our readers? Andrea: elle has fun events, sales, and/ or trunk shows on a monthly basis, which we always promote on our website, email, mass mailers, and advertisements, so make sure I have your info so you don’t miss out! Boomsday Festival 2013 Explodes on September 1 The 26th anniversary of the Boomsday Festival will be held on Sunday, September 1, along Neyland Drive at Volunteer Landing. The day will be filled with tons of fun – delicious food, contests, a Family Fun Zone featuring inflatables, Boomsday Bandz, and, of course, the nation’s largest Labor Day weekend fireworks show! Boomsday 2013 activities start at 1 pm with food from 30 vendors, amusement games and rides, exhibits, children's activities, and a community stage for young athletes and performers. Then, at 9:30 pm, the fireworks show begins high above Neyland Drive and Volunteer Landing. The fireworks display will be choreographed to music broadcasted over load speakers and on Star 102.1 FM. In 2005, the Boomsday Festival was titled "the nation's largest Labor Day weekend fireworks display," according to Lansden Hill, national pyrotechnics expert and owner of Pyro Shows of LaFollette, Tennessee. Pyro Shows has been responsible for producing the fireworks display since the event's inception in 1987. In addition to this title, the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) selected the Boomsday Festival as one of its "Top 20 Events" for the months of September 2006 and 2007. Your Tax Documents What to Keep and What to Shred

hether you use old-fashioned manila filing folders, a flash drive, or cloud storage, tax and personal finance authorities agree on the importance of saving tax documents and records. In addition to using the information for preparing your next income tax return, it may come in handy years from now. Your tax data is helpful and often required in many non-tax financial situations. For instance, insurance companies, lenders, and creditors often use tax information to verify income and asset value. Form W-2s can provide proof of income if your Social Security benefits are less than what they should be.

Information to save for your next tax return Organizing and saving information throughout the year will cut tax return preparation time and can even save you money. Save any information related to: » Income from wages, dividends, interest, or business: Forms W-2, 1099, and K-1, bank statements, brokerage statements » Deductions and credits (child care expenses, medical and dental expenses, business use of home, charitable gifts, vehicle sales tax, alimony): Receipts, invoices, mileage logs, bank or credit card statements, canceled checks » Home and property: Closing statements, invoices, proof of payment, insurance records, receipts for improvements » Investments: Forms 1099 and 2439, brokerage statements, mutual fund statements While you don’t need a fancy or high-tech organizing system, you do need to keep the information in a secure place. Consider saving electronic copies to the cloud or on a backup storage device in addition to, or in place of, your paper files. One of the key advantages of

going digital is that your tax information is better protected from natural disasters. Saving electronically also means you can access the information anywhere from a mobile device. What to keep after filing your taxes and how long to keep it Knowing what information to save and for how long can be confusing. As a general rule of thumb, keep tax returns and related documents for at least three years from the April 15 filing deadline. » Three years: Tax return forms and schedules plus all information to support what you claimed on your return, especially records related to property, investments, or business assets (for depreciation). While there are exceptions, the IRS has three years to assess additional

tax and audit returns. Three years is also the amount of time you have to amend your return. » Four years: Many income-taxing states have an additional year to audit individual returns. » Six years: Forms W-2, 1099, etc. because the IRS has six years to contact you if you’ve failed to report income. » Seven years: Any information regarding loss from worthless securities or bad debts. Certain documents should be saved longer. Information related to your home, property, investments, and retirement plans should be kept indefinitely. If you dispose of an asset, be sure to keep the information for another three years. Business owners should keep tax information for at least four years. That includes employment records, gross receipts, invoices, bank statements, proofs of purchase, asset records, databases, emails, and even voicemails. Social Security Says Goodbye to Paper Checks Presented by Ali Swofford

In March, Social Security stopped mailing checks to all but a small percentage of retirees.

The new options are direct deposit or debit card.

Most Social Security recipients receive their benefits by direct deposit. The Treasury Department sends an electronic message to a bank or credit union crediting the retiree’s account with the amount of the payment.1 Since 2008, about three million SSI recipients have opted to use the Direct Express MasterCard, a Treasury-recommended prepaid debit card. The Social Security payment is automatically credited to the card each month. 1,2 The debit card has some drawbacks. While it carries no monthly fees or overdraft charges, you only get one fee-free ATM withdrawal a month with it. Retirees can save a bit of money – maybe as much as $5 a month or $60 a year in checking fees – if they simply go the direct deposit route.2,3

The change was encouraged, not demanded.

“We will not interrupt payments if a person does not comply nor will we switch a payment method automatically,” said Walt Henderson, director of the Go Direct program. By March, seniors getting checks from the program got a letter offering assistance to help them change over to the debit card or direct deposit option. 2,3

What if you still want a check in the mail?

Call the Treasury Department’s Go Direct hotline at 800-333-1795 and request a waiver. If you were born on or before May 1, 1921, you get an automatic waiver – you will still get your Social Security income by check unless you want to change to one of the other options.1,2

Why is this move being made?

It costs 92 cents more to print and mail a check compared to electronic payment methods. By ending the printing of Social Security checks, about $1 billion in federal savings can be realized during the next decade.3 For more information on Social Security, refer to www.SocialSecurity.gov.

Cooling Off Recipes Chilled Soba Noodles with Pesto

Taking the Heat Now that it’s August, it’s time to

take the heat. As sweltering temperatures rise, look to your cupboards and cooler supplies to add to your regimen of “cooling off.” Food choices are very important when it comes to cooling off. Michio Kushi, world-renowned author and lecturer, has suggested that eating foods grown locally and within the same climate zone will result in easier adaptation to the environment. He added that some of today’s conveniences, such as air conditioners, contribute to a weakened immune system. Certainly such conveniences make life more pleasant, but consuming a generous supply of locally grown, cooling foods most definitely can help a body “take the heat” and therefore reduce the need for lowering that thermostat. A plant-based diet tops the list for having a cooling effect on the body. Certain vegetables, fruits, and spices can be utilized to have the most effect during the sweltering days of August. Peppermint, for example, is not just a breath mint but a great heat buster as well. The addition of peppermint or spearmint to chilled green tea or lemonade gives great relief to those hot summer days. Fennel seeds are also useful. In addition to its cooling effects, chewing fennel seeds before and after meals promotes good oral hygiene, stimulates proper digestion, and reduces acid reflux. Other heat busting herbs and spices include cilantro, parsley, dill, cardamom, fresh basil, and turmeric. Radishes, lettuce, leafy greens such as arugula and spinach, and cucumbers have cooling effects as well. They have a high

water content for hydration, and eating them raw makes them even more cooling. Fruits that facilitate cooling include watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, berries, and citrus fruits. Lemons, limes, grapefruit, and oranges are known for their health enhancing benefits to the skin. They have a wide array of phytonutrients and help aid in digestion and the breakdown of fatty foods. Watermelon is high in vitamin C and contains lycopene, which helps reduce cardiovascular disease and cancer. Honeydew melon and cantaloupe are low in calories and high in potassium and water content. They are also known for their diuretic qualities. All in all chilled fruit helps to combat heat at any temperature. Eat chilled or toss in salads with a balsamic dressing for a refreshing twist. Making conscience decisions when the temperature heats up is not only wise but healthy as well. Eating locally and choosing more cooling foods can make those sweltering August days more enjoyable. Staying hydrated by choosing high water content foods makes sense when hot weather abounds. Cook Soba noodles until done and run under cold water to stop cooking. Set aside. Prepare pesto in blender as follows: › 1 bunch basil (2 cups) › 1/4 cup olive oil › 2 Tbsp water › 1/4 cup pine nuts › 2 Tbsp lemon juice › 3 Tbsp ume vinegar or 1 tsp sea salt Blend until creamy. Toss together with noodles. Top with 2 Tbsp of whole pine nuts, 1 chopped scallion, and 2 Tbsp chopped parsley. Chill in the refrigerator before serving.

Tinnitus: Making Sense of “Head Noises” Buzzzzzzzz Ringing, whooshing, chirp-

ing, pulsing, and hearing things in your head that no one else does? Many people think of ringing in their ears as tinnitus, but the ringing is really just one of the forms these sounds can take. Fifty million people in the United States have experienced tinnitus – that’s one out of five people! So there is a very good chance that you know someone with tinnitus. Thirty million people state tinnitus impacts their daily life. That is one out of 10 people who may have problems falling asleep, concentrating when reading or watching TV, or finding it hard to follow a conversation, all because of tinnitus.

What is tinnitus?

The definition of tinnitus is the perception of a sound that doesn’t exist in the environment. Many people will ask what causes tinnitus. The reality is that we do not know the exact physical reason. We do know of many things that trigger tinnitus such as loud sounds, factory noise, construction, or rock concerts, particularly if for long periods of time. Certain medications and supplements, both prescription and over-the-counter, can aggravate the

condition. Many of our favorite foods, particularly those with salt, caffeine, or alcohol, work against us. Trauma to the head and neck as well as some medical conditions, such as cardiovascular disorders or hypo/hypertension, may also impact tinnitus.

What does it mean to have tinnitus?

Research has shown that the most successful way to manage tinnitus involves three basic components: 1) A sound stimulus to help distract the brain from the tinnitus 2) Education and counseling about tinnitus 3) Amplification if the patient has hearing loss

Tinnitus often doesn’t occur alone; the two most common symptoms are hyperacusis and hearing loss. Hyperacusis is a sensitivity to loud sounds. In extreme cases, the ring of the telephone may be too loud. More often, raised voices or loud environments may cause discomfort or make the person become tired and easily overwhelmed. Hearing loss is very common with tinnitus as well, but many people are not aware of the hearing loss. They may believe that it is the tinnitus that is causing the problems with hearing and understanding the people in their life.

Spirit of Nations Powwow, to be held in Knoxville on Saturday, August 10, will include several activities in recognition of the 175th anniversary of the Trail of Tears. In addition to demonstrations of various styles of powwow dancing, this year’s event will include members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians performing traditional Cherokee dances, such as the Bear Dance, Quail Dance, and the Beaver Dance. Also on the schedule this year are lectures on the Trail of Tears, Cherokee storytelling, and a Cherokee language class. As always, the powwow will include a blowgun competition, Indian tacos, quality Native arts and crafts, a silent auction, flute playing, and a hand drum competition. New this year will be a children’s area with face painting, children’s games and craft

activities, and storytelling specifically designed for kids. The powwow will be held at the Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park. The hours are 10 am to 8 pm. Before there were boy bands, there

were bands with men in them. Men who played instruments. Men who had something to say. Men who could move you with their voices and nothing else if they wanted to. Men, in other words, with soul. Anyone with an interest in music – meaning anyone who owns a record or two – should pay homage to these soul men by visiting the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Located on the legendary McLemore Avenue, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music is an exact replica of the former Stax recording studio, home to soul legends like Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, the Staples Singers, Wilson Pickett, and Rufus Thomas, to name just a few. Built in 2002, the museum experience literally takes visitors through a living timeline of southern music, from the small country church to Isaac Hayes’ solid gold Ca34

dillac Eldorado. In addition to artifacts, historic gold records, and rare video footage, the museum hosts a number of live music events in its Studio One space. But for a more current and riveting soul experience, visitors to Memphis need to get up early on Sunday mornings and make a pilgrimage to Al Green’s Full Gospel Tabernacle Church. Not far from the Stax Museum, Al Green’s Full Gospel Tabernacle Church offers one of the purest soul music experiences in the city. Granted, it’s gospel, but it’s Al Green, and he’s taking you to the source of all soul music. Services begin around 11 am and often end around 2 pm, sometimes later. It’s not a gig or a show or even a club. It’s church, so bring your heart, your stamina, and your wallet for donations. You won’t regret it; it’s a religious experience in every way.

sion” of the 1960s as the catalyst for modern rock music. Memphis begs to differ. Cleveland claims it’s the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll with its big old museum. Memphis can only laugh. L.A. is often described as the epicenter of the music industry. Maybe so, but Memphis knows where rock began: at Sun Studio. A modest brick building on Union Avenue most folks wouldn’t give a second glance, Sun Studio gave birth to the rock ’n’ roll we all know. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins all cut records at Sun. Today, it’s more than a home for rock memorabilia; it’s a living experience kept alive by a motley crew of local musicians, actors, and writers who do more than show you around. Travel Sun didn’t just give birth to rock ’n’ roll; it gave birth to its king. The King, that is. Anyone who makes it to Memphis absolutely, positively has to make a stop at Graceland. One of the most beloved national landmarks, Graceland, as well as its slew of Elvis exhibits (you can check out his planes!), is a unique window into the imagination of the first American idol. Listen to original recordings, tour his jungle room, and take a stroll through his hall of honors, and you’ll begin to understand that the King was constantly reinventing himself, always searching for something new and exciting, whether it was recording gospel (his only Grammy) or acting in movies.

In Memphis, the blues mean many

They are our past and our present, and that, in many ways, is how people experience the blues when they visit. For many this experience begins with that first stroll down Beale Street. A neon tunnel buzzing with the 12-bar chord progression, sometimes a slide, a jaunty piano, and the raspy voice of a singer well into his or her third set of the night. Beale Street is the heartbeat of Memphis Blues, Memphis entertainment, and Memphis fun. Lined with club after club after club, Beale Street offers visitors an escape into a past that is thick with hickory smoke, open containers, and the freedom that comes with letting go for a few hours. But the blues is more than a good time. It’s also the context for our city. The Smithsonian Rock ’n’ Soul Museum, attached to FedEx Forum and a half block away from where you were the night before on Beale, gives visitors the full history of Memphis music. With more than 100 songs to listen to, this audio journey takes visitors through the history and drama of the formation of the blues, its migration north, and its importance to our national culture. A block away, visitors can dive a bit deeper into the blues by touring the Gibson Guitar Factory, home to the ES series guitars played by such blues (and rock) legends as B.B. King, Scotty Moore, and Chuck Berry. From wood to strings, the tour gives you a close look at the

care and craft that goes into each instrument. If you’re lucky, the tour will end with a few licks, played by any number of the accomplished musicians who make the Gibson their day job.

August in the Garden At church recently the preacher announced he was forming a committee to start an ark building project. We laughed, but the rainfall is starting to be a serious subject. Some plants are very happy with all this rain. My hydrangeas, hostas, and ferns are enormous. My “Limelight” hydrangea is probably 10’ tall and 8’ wide! Several of my perennials are also much bigger than they’ve been in previous years. Unfortunately, my plants that prefer dry conditions are miserable. My hybrid tea roses have never been this unhappy in their lives. The other things that are delighted with the overabundance of rain are insects and diseases. It’s a swampy breeding ground out there, and if you don’t have at least one mosquito bite, you must not have been outside all summer. Speaking of being outside, let’s start the to-do list:

›› I know it’s been raining forever and the days that aren’t raining have a humidity level of about 300%, but you need to go look around your yard. There may be struggling plants we can save now that will be dead as a doornail in a couple of months. Take a cold beverage, slather on the bug spray, and head out! ›› This has been the summer of the fungus. Mushrooms and brown patch in lawns, black spot, powdery mildew and rust on leaves, root rot in the roots of just about anything – I have seen them all. Unfortunately, fungal treatments are being washed away almost faster than they can work. Your best bet is going to be a systemic fungicide, but even it has to stay in the ground long enough to be absorbed. Just keep trying, and cross your fingers that we’ll go long enough without torrential rain for it to be taken in. ›› There’s a huge insect population

this year. Keep your eyes open for trouble, but remember that not all insects are bad. Before you begin a campaign to kill every bug in your yard, bring in a sample of your plant and let us help you pick the right insecticide. The bugs you’re trying so desperately to kill may actually be beneficial insects that kill the bad guys. ›› How are your container plants? Gorgeous? Hideous? If yours fall into the latter group, yank them up and replace them with new plants. We still have pretty annuals that will last until frost, and who wants to be greeted by ugly plants every day? If they still look good, keep them that way with regular water and fertilizer. ›› Annuals, perennials, and blooming shrubs can all benefit from deadheading right now. Cut off spent blooms, do a little shaping, and stand back. Many will reward you with a fresh round of blooms. ›› The end of August and early September are good times to do a fall fertilizer application, especially if plants are showing signs of a nutritional deficiency. Fall applications give plants a final boost before winter, but you need to do it early enough to give them time to toughen up before we have a frost. New growth is vulnerable to freezing. ›› If you have a hydrangea that blooms on old wood and you want to prune it, you need to prune it now, before it sets bud for next year. This includes the H. macrophylla and H. quercifolia. No, you don’t have to prune them if you don’t want to. Call us if you have questions. ›› Late summer and fall blooming perennials will continue to come in. Mums will start arriving late in the month, but don’t confuse hybrid mums with perennial chrysanthemums. I’ll talk more on that next month. ›› Weeds, weeds, weeds – do they never stop? The short answer is no. Keep weeding. ›› If you had a vegetable garden this year, start cleaning it up as plants die back. You can start cool season vegetables at the end of August if it isn’t hotter than Hades. Broccoli and cauliflower will need to be protected from the heat. Make note of which things did well and which didn’t, and make plans for next year. Remember to rotate! Yes, it sounds silly to say you’re rotating your crops when you have a 4’x4’ bed, but you should never plant veggies in the same place they were the year before. ›› Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders and baths clean and full. This can be the busiest time of the year for your feeders as young birds are learning to care for themselves and hummingbirds are moving south. If your garden is crying out for something a little different, you owe it to yourself to check out sea holly. Not only is it an architecturally striking plant, but it thrives in conditions often considered challenging. ryngi um, commonly known as sea holly or eryngo, can refer to several closely related species in the Apiaceae (carrot) family. Plants form numerous blooms of tight umbels with spiny bracts surrounding each bloom. Each bloom and even the stems can display a blue or violet color. Most varieties grow to between two and three feet tall from a basal rosette. Sea holly prefers full sun and a well-drained location and does best in poor soils. When grown in rich soils or part shade, plants tend to sprawl if not staked. Most cultivars are hardy to zone 5, and once established, they’re very drought tolerant. Site the plant carefully before planting, as it does not transplant well due to its large taproot. Most of the varieties will selfseed, so remove seed heads if you don’t want volunteers. Sea holly can also be propagated by careful division or by root cuttings. Sea holly can be dramatic as a single specimen or in a mass planting, and it can fit into every garden style from formal gardens, to wildflower collections, to rock gardens. It’s very attractive to butterflies. If the stalks and spent blooms are left on the plant, it provides winter interest in the garden. Stalks can also be removed and used either fresh or dried in bouquets and other arrangements. Sea holly is not susceptible to any significant pest or disease problems, and it has no major maintenance issues. Once planted and established, it is remarkably carefree in the garden. Fall Gardeners’ Festival Planned for August 27 at UT’s Plateau AgResearch Center A fun and educational day is planned for visitors to the newest UT Gardens site The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and the Cumberland County Master Gardeners will host the fifth annual Fall Gardeners’ Festival at UT’s Plateau AgResearch and Education Center on Tuesday, August 27. The event will take place in the Plateau Discovery Gardens. Admission is free and registration begins at 9 am. The program is scheduled to run until 4 pm. The gardens are located in the central time zone. Michael “The Reverend” Sullivan and Jeff Ross, garden manager of Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee, will be the featured presenters at the event. They will speak about the chef’s relationship to the gardener. Festival activities will include educational presentations by UT experts and local gardening personalities teaching on topics including shade gardening, ornamental grasses, feeding your family with a garden, and why trees die. Additional topics will include landscaping techniques, controlling weeds in your turf, grape production, and organic gardening. Sessions on treating fruit

and ornamental trees for pests and learning to differentiate fungal and other diseases in the garden will also be presented. Wagon tours of the center’s operations and walking tours of the Plateau Discovery Gardens will also be available. In April, the Plateau Discovery Gardens became the third site in the UT Gardens’ statewide plant collection and joined the other UT Gardens sites as the state’s official botanical garden. The event will also feature vendors selling their wares and educational exhibits with information for gardeners and those interested in landscaping and nursery products. The popular UT Extension Ask-the-Expert booth invites visitors to bring samples or photos of “needy” plant materials for analysis and recommended treatments. Also, Debbie Joines, manager of UT Extension’s Soil, Plant, and Pest Center, will be on hand to provide free soil pH analyses. Those interested in this service should bring a sandwich bag full of the soil they wish to be tested. Snacks and lunch items will be available

Flowers Can Change Perspective

I slowly knocked and entered the hospital, as I had many times before while volunteering for Random Acts of Flowers. The room was dim and very quiet. I approached the young lady who occupied the room and said, “Good morning, my name is Chad, and I’m with Random Acts of Flowers. We brought you some flowers today.” The young lady smiled and thanked me very sweetly. It was easy to tell that her condition was more serious than most rooms I had visited before. Multiple machines, IVs, etc. filled the room. I asked her if I could put the flowers on the shelf. She said, “Yes, please.” I told her I hoped she enjoyed the flowers and felt better. She smiled again and thanked me. As I walked out in the hallway a lady smiled and came up to me. She said, “You just came out of my daughter’s room. Thank you for bringing her flowers.” As we talked she told me her daughter has five chronic diseases, that this was her 11th time in the hospital, and that recently she has spent more time in the hospital than at home. She said that she or her husband had made it a point to stay with her every night, so she was never alone. Her mother then told me that she had been sick for so long that the flowers that people normally sent to those in the hospital had stopped coming. She hugged me and said, “Thank you so much for giving her flowers.” I turned and continued down the hall, wiping tears away. Caring, love, and encouragement is a powerful thing.

A year ago I was delivering flowers at Windsor Gardens, an assisted living facility in the Cedar Bluff area. I noticed a woman sitting at the end of the hall, alone. She was well dressed but looked lost and lonely. After speaking with her I learned that it was her first day at the facility. Being a new resident brought with it anxiety and apprehension, as she didn’t know anyone, and the new surroundings were a big adjustment. This presented me with an opportunity to enhance the already impactful mission of Random Acts of Flowers. I brought the cart of flowers to her, and we picked out her favorite colors together and delivered her a beautiful bouquet of daisies and roses. Her mood changed completely as she smiled and said, “I think I’m going to really like this place.” It’s interactions like these that keep me motivated to volunteer for Random Acts of Flowers. The work we do on behalf of people in the community is amazing. Time and again I’m surprised at how much a bouquet of flowers and a little kindness can mean to a person.

Portrait of Timothy Chandler Comes Home

n a manner of speaking, Timothy Chandler has returned home. Courtesy of the East Tennessee Historical Society, a reproduction of a folk art portrait of a young Timothy Chandler now hangs on the wall at Wheatlands Plantation, where generations of the Chandler and McMahan families resided for more than 140 years. According to Michele MacDonald, curator of collections at East Tennessee Historical Society, the person who created the watercolor and pencil drawing is unknown but perhaps was one of several folk artists who traveled throughout the region soliciting business from wealthy families. Born in 1820, Timothy Chandler was a young boy when he posed for the portrait holding a copper horn with his black dog jumping at his side. He’s dressed in a blue dress, which was a common garment for young boys at the time. He was a son of John Chandler, who built the distinguished two-story brick house known as Wheatlands around 1825 after a fire destroyed the original farmhouse. Young Timothy was named after his grandfather, Timothy Chandler, who was Revolutionary War veteran. 62

Timothy married Mary E. Smith Chandler, who was the widow of his older brother, William Chandler, and reared his brother’s four children as if they were his own. Adela “Miss Dell” Chandler McMahan lived in the house longer than any of its other inhabitants. The only daughter of Timothy Chandler, Miss Dell was born in the house on October 3, 1859, and died there on February 22, 1936. In documents recorded by her daughter-inlaw, Blanche Clabough McMahan, Miss Dell recalls an incident during the Civil War when a man who was mistaken for her father was shot and killed in a nearby barn. She was only six years old when her father and grandfather, who were Confederate sympathizers, fled to Knoxville to avoid capture by Union loyalists. Miss Dell’s recollections revealed that she was carried by her step-grandmother, Anne Wayland Erwin Chandler, to safety just moments before a rock was thrown through the window of her bedroom, landing where had been sleeping. She further disclosed that the ladies of Wheatlands got along well with the Union soldiers. Her reminiscing divulged the soldiers would travel to other parts of the county to raid farms and return with turkeys, hams, and vegetables. After the slaves prepared a big feast, little Dell would sit amongst the hungry men while they all enjoyed the delicious repast. Along with other valuable possessions, the portrait was probably hidden during the war to avoid the possibility of being taken or destroyed by marauding soldiers. Although several modifications, which included facade renovations and changing the name from Wheatlands to Ler-Mac after Miss Dell married Isaac Newton McMahan, the unique portrait of Miss Dell’s father was displayed with honor in the home throughout her life. Miss Dell willed the property to her only grandson, Samuel Timothy Chandler “Sonny” McMahan, Jr. When he died in 1963, the house fell to his mother, Blanche, who was the last family member to occupy the house. In the period between 1966 and 2011, Wheatlands Plantation had several owners. In 2011, John Greer Burns, III and Richard A. Parker purchased the house with six remaining acres of the plantation that once included an extraordinary 4,700 acres featuring a mercantile store, granary, tannery, slave houses,

and a legal distillery. Through internet research, Burns and Parker discovered the portrait of Timothy Chandler on Case Antiques Auction and Appraisals’ website. However, further investigations revealed the painting had already been purchased by the East Tennessee Historical Society and placed in their permanent museum collection. Discouraged that they had come so close to recovering an original Wheatlands artifact, Burns and Parker contacted the historical society and found they not only possessed the portrait, but also the copper horn Timothy was holding in the painting. Not interested in selling their acquisition, the historical society graciously agreed to allow the portrait to be scanned so the homeowners could have a true copy to hang at the Wheatlands Plantation. Burns and Parker immediately agreed to pay the related expenses. Timothy Chandler had returned home.

Pivotal Moments in Civil War East Tennessee The New Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History Open now through October 13, 2013

Sword,” at the Museum of East Tennessee History through October 13, recounts pivotal moments in the region’s Civil War history through a series of rare and important artifacts and documents, many on public display for the first time. Key events emphasized include the reaction of East Tennesseans to Lincoln’s call for troops after the Fort Sumter attack, the divisions that developed as the region’s citizens chose sides, the reaction of Unionists to living in a Confederate state, the occupation of the region first by Confederates and then by Union forces, the military experience and emancipation of blacks, Andrew Johnson as military governor, and the rise of East Tennesseans to political power after the war. The exhibition is a collaborative partnership with several museums across the region,

• Original letter from Tennessee Governor Isham Harris to the United States Secretary of War refusing Lincoln’s call for Tennessee troops. • The original county-by-county tallies of the votes from Tennessee’s June 8, 1861, secession referendum. Visitors can see four of the original reports (Scott, Sevier, Sullivan, and Knox counties) and can view copies of the originals for their counties. • Original sketch of simultaneous Union and Confederate rallies on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, April 27, 1861, drawn from memory by Knoxvillian Samuel Bell Palmer, a Confederate, while an inmate in a Union prison camp. The drawing is an iconic image of the region’s divided loyalties. • Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson campaign banner, 1864. • Painting of Samuel P. Carter of Elizabethton, who masterminded the bridge burning plot that resulted in the hanging of five Greene countians and resulted in the arrest of many more and a Confederate crackdown on the Unionist citizens. Carter was the only man who saw service as both an admiral in the navy and a general in the army. • Walking cane carved from a limb of a tree from which one of the Greene County bridge

Remedies for Deadly Heat

Hyponatremia symptoms are similar to those of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and are often overlooked. Symptoms range from mild to severe and can include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, confusion, seizures, coma, and death. To avoid this condition, medical authorities advise marathon runners to consume extra salt, and this advice should also be considered by anyone exposed to excessive heat. Salt is critical in maintaining hydration. Sadly, there have been several cases of illness and even deaths from hyponatremia during the past several years. According to the British Medical Journal, 16 runners have died as a result of too little sodium and over-hydration, and another 1,600 have become seriously ill. It is true that water intoxication is more commonly seen among extreme athletes, but older individuals are also at high risk for several reasons. As we age, our kidneys become less efficient at conserving salt when the body is stressed, and common medications such as diuretics greatly increase that risk. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the reasons that during severe high temperatures, news accounts most often refer to elderly victims of the heat. The proper balance of electrolytes in the human body is essential for normal function of the cells and organs. Electrolytes help to regulate cardiovascular and neurological functions, fluid balance, and oxygen delivery. Ideally, anyone engaging in outdoor activity in the heat or even an indoor exercise program should drink 8 to 12 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes during a session. If exercising exceeds an hour, a beverage that contains salt and an energy carbohydrate is far superior to plain water. The recommended concentration of salt in a fluid replacement beverage is one quarter teaspoon per liter. Most sports drinks contain salt, although the amount is not quite that high. Anyone can make an alternative to commercial fluid replacement beverages easily by adding one quarter to one half teaspoon of salt per liter or 32 ounces of water. Every day more and more Americans are motivated to start exercise programs. Physical fitness is a state of good health resulting from regular exercise and good nutrition. When you exercise, your bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s metabolism works at a much higher rate, breaking down and regenerating tissues and creating waste metabolites that need to be flushed out of your system. However, regardless of your level of activity, you still need to maintain good hydration. So remember to always drink plenty of water to beat heat, but also up your intake of electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium. Learn more about staying hydrated by visiting www. More Than Just Staying Hydrated Some parts of the country are experiencing record high temperatures this summer. Las Vegas hit 117 degrees, and Phoenix topped the charts at 119 degrees. Salt Lake City also hit the triple digits as did several areas in California. Dry heat or not, residents and visitors were undoubtedly feeling it, and anytime the mercury gets remotely close to these temperatures, staying hydrated is of paramount importance. This is especially the case for anyone participating in out-

door activities or any sort of exercise program. Our bodies produce sweat in order to regulate our core body temperature. As the moisture that appears on your skin evaporates, you cool off. In fact, human beings are the most effective mammal when it comes to regulating our body temperature. At the extreme, an adult can sweat as much as two to four liters per hour. All of this water needs to be replaced, but remember that when you sweat, you are not just losing water, but you are also losing minerals such as sodium and potassium. You must replace the sodium and potassium along with the water. This is why athletes drink sports drinks like Gatorade rather than just water. Replacing water without sufficient sodium can quickly produce hyponatremia, a potentially fatal condition.

Hummingbird Festival Get a close-up view of one of nature’s most miraculous wonders The Ruby-throated hummingbird weighs only about 1/10th of an ounce and has a brain approximately the size of a BB. Yet hummingbirds are considered masters of navigation, timing, and memory. Year after year, a male hummingbird may return to the exact same breeding territory and land on the same favored perches on the same calendar date each spring. Females will return to the same nest site, refurbish the nest, and use it for a number of successive years. n August 24th, at

the third annual Wonder of the Hummingbirds Fe s t i v a l , K n o xv i l l e residents and visitors will have the opportunity to see Ruby-throated hummingbirds up close at the banding table with Mark Armstrong, a certified Master Bander of both hummingbirds and songbird species. Hummingbirds will be harmlessly captured, weighed, measured, and banded before being sent on their way. At the demonstration, visitors can witness the delicate process of applying a numbered band to a hummer’s tiny leg so its future migration movements can be tracked. Children in particular will enjoy this close-viewing opportunity. Banding has enormous scientific value, providing a way to document the specialized timing and direction of hummingbird movement during migration. August and September are busy migration months in Tennessee when thousands of hummingbirds from northern breeding territories are moving south through

our state, on their way to wintering grounds in Central America and Southern Mexico. The festival will treat visitors to renowned speakers on nature topics, wildlife educational demonstrations, guided walks, and vendors selling food and drinks, plants, locally made arts and crafts, bird feeders and supplies, garden items, and a “Bargain Barn” selling new and gently used merchandise with nature themes. This year’s festival includes expert speakers that will present programs from 10 am to 4 pm. T. David Pitts, Professor of Biology, UT Martin, will talk about “The Hummingbirds That Nest in Your Yard.” Other speakers include Marcia Davis, Birdlife Columnist for the Knoxville News Sentinel, David Unger, Professor of Biology, Maryville College, and Steve McGaffin, Naturalist and Educator for the Knoxville Zoo. Lynne McCoy, a wildlife rehabilitator who takes in 600-800 birds and mammals to rehabilitate and release back to the wild when possible, will bring a few of her “ambassadors” to meet festival visitors. The Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival will take place on Saturday, August 24, from

9 am to 5 pm and has an admission fee of $5. Children under six are admitted free. The festival is co-sponsored by the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and Ijams Nature Center and will be held at Ijams, located at 2915 Island Home Avenue in Knoxville. Better Backpacking A backpack is as much a staple of college life as heavy books and lots of studying. Overloaded backpacks, however, can cause back pain. Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering at UTK

fter joining the faculty of the University of Tennessee less than a year ago, Dr. Eric Lukosi is already distinguishing himself in his field. The assistant professor of nuclear engineering has received a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities for his research in powerful batteries. The award is worth $5,000 from ORAU and a matching $5,000 from the UT Office of Research, for a total of $10,000. “Winning this award is a great honor,” said Dr. Lukosi. “It provides me prestige early in my career, helping me gain recognition in my field. The award provides some important seed money to foster my research.” Dr. Lukosi has been at UTK since August of 2012. The batteries he is researching pack several thousand times more energy than batteries commonly used today. Called a High Temperature Direct Energy Conversion, the battery converts radioactive energy to electrical energy using a semiconducting diamond transducer. Dr. Lukosi’s nuclear

battery aims to provide power generation for more than a year, which would be especially useful for spacecraft and sensors. Dr. Lukosi earned his bachelor’s degree from B e n e d i c t i n e Co l l e ge in Atchison, Kansas, in physics and astronomy and his master’s and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Missouri. “I enjoy the academic environment,” he said. “The freedom in research and fostering young, fresh minds and ideas is very rewarding.” A typical day for Dr. Lukosi involves going through email, meeting with graduate students, lecturing in his course, seeing students after class and in labs, overseeing student research projects, and working on personal projects such as proposals and papers.

“Time management is probably the most difficult aspect of a tenure track faculty member,” he said. “There is more work than there is time, and learning to manage the workload with home life – I have a wife and newborn child – is the most important part of the job.”

Minding Your Small Business’ P’s and Q’s remember my mother frequently directing this expression to me as a small boy. While I didn’t know what P’s and Q’s meant, she left little room for doubt as to what her intent was. P’s and Q’s, according to Wikipedia, is an old English expression meaning “mind your manners.” The P’s for “pleases” and the Q’s for “thank yous.” The presumption being, of course, that little children mispronounced pleases and thank yous as P’s and Q’s. So what do P’s and Q’s have to do with your small business? I’ve never believed that there was any single factor that was responsible for the overall success of a small business. I believe rather that success results from performing a multitude of small items well, consistently, and persistently.

What items am I referring to? Here are just a few: • The exterior and interior appearances of your business • Your attire and that of your associates • Your merchandising efforts • Phone etiquette • Professionalism

Customers and, more importantly, potential new clients notice these seemingly small things, and these small things can add up into one big thing – the decision to take their business elsewhere. I’ve personally witnessed customers ignored by owners and associates who take personal calls on their cell phones. Or how about stores that open late, close early, or close for lunch without so much as a note on the door? And you’ve got to love the barking dog, screaming

children, or television blaring in the background when you try to conduct business on the telephone. Like it or not, you’re judged by every customer or potential new customer that talks to you on the phone or enters your small business. If you think glancing at your smartphone or, worse yet, answering it while conversing with a customer is acceptable etiquette, you’re wrong. You’re telling your customer that your time is more valuable than theirs. The option is yours, but remember… your customers have options, too.

tion is an art form. But there is a common void in one area of importance that needs to be recognized. While traveling for several days recently, observing people in both business and personal settings, I found myself often wondering, who’s the boss? Though I understand being concerned with the feelings of others, there are times it seems evident we should not strive for equality. While we are equal in civil rights - as we should be we are not equal in authority. Authority is earned or appointed in many ways; education, promotion, seniority, or position. In most situations, there should be a clear leader, and that person should take charge and be the boss. In order to participate successfully in most settings, a simple question must be asked and acknowledged by all involved. Who is the boss in this situation? If it is not you, step aside and let them lead.

At work: While it’s nice if we like our

boss, that is often not nearly as important as respecting their position of authority. Unless

there is some type of abusive situation, we must submit to appropriate authority and do our jobs to the very best of our abilities. Often people spend too much time complaining about people they don’t like, when they should expend that same energy on getting the job done. When you work hard enough to become the boss, then strive to be the boss you always wished you had. Until then, get back to work. Pave your path with excellence and a great attitude.

At home: After several days around families on vacation, I’m amazed how many parents try to “sell” their children on doing what they are told. “You don’t want that candy, do you?” Of course they do, they are kids. Why are so many parents afraid to act like the boss? Children will not choose what you wish they would choose, because they do not share in your knowledge or experience. Nor can they calculate risk, thus the need for adult supervision. Take charge and step into your role as a parent. Be the boss they need you to be and create boundaries and enforce them. A parent’s primary job is to raise a responsible adult.

We need to have confident leaders, and we need to be confident leaders. Being effective can be as simple as understanding and accepting your role in a given situation and stepping into it boldly, knowing you will learn as you grow. Do you want to be a better leader? Use a strong voice, good posture, and confident body language. Maintain eye contact and listen when others speak. Respect others. These are teachable skills that convey trust and competency and can be learned over time. The way you carry and present yourself will determine if others will respect you and your position of authority. Who’s the boss? That should be obvious.

Feeling Stuck About How to Change Your Relationship?

Three tips to easily get unstuck! Sometimes relationships can be hard.

When we find ourselves struggling in a relationship, we often feel as though nothing will ever change. We know it’s not the way we want it to be, but we aren’t sure what to do to make it better. What often happens when we can’t figure out how to create change in a particular relationship, whether it’s with a family member, a friend, or a co-worker, is we get stuck. When we get stuck, we do nothing, hoping things will just work out on their own. But as we all know, this rarely, if ever, happens. Instead, when nothing changes, we get more frustrated and angrier. This builds to the point that we hold resentments, avoid the person, or sometimes end the relationship altogether. Imagine if you knew exactly what to do to get yourself unstuck, and in doing this, you were able to see solutions you didn’t know you knew because of being stuck.

Etiquette

Imagine being able to take yourself from the frustration of being stuck to a place of empowerment because you now know how to get unstuck and create a better relationship with that person. These three tips will help you get unstuck and start moving you to where you want to be.

1. Realize that one person can make a difference. When one person in a rela-

tionship changes their behavior, the other person in that relationship must also change. So you really have the power within you to change your relationship.

2. Bridge the gap. Going from where you are to where you want to be can feel insurmountable, but it isn’t. Create one doable step at a time. This creates a path of doable things that allow to you bridge that gap between where you are and where you want to be.

3. Focus on the details. Get a really

clear picture on what behavior or change you want to see in your relationship. What does it look like? The more details you come up with the better. As the other person starts to change, you will recognize even the most minuscule change. This helps you see that change is occurring and will keep your momentum going. Start using these tips today, and you will start to see your relationship in a whole new way! True Test of a Lady Since we focused on gentlemen last month, I figured it was only fair to focus on ladies this month. One of my favorite groups of people to teach is teenagers. They actually are usually the most reactive and most receptive to etiquette training. They’re on the brink of their careers, their lives, and most of them are eager to learn how to make the most of their future. The trick is helping them to believe in what will truly make a difference in their future happiness and success. Of course, proper etiquette, in my opinion, is absolutely key in this process. Most girls and women I teach would love to be considered a true lady.

Here’s a list of skills that are always key in being a lady that everyone respects and admires: » A lady is gracious at all times. This means we show gratitude for all things, refraining from complaining and being negative. » A lady is kind. We strive to look for 74

opportunities to serve and help others, always doing so with a cheerful attitude. » A lady never gossips and refrains from speaking unkindly of others. If what you’re going to say to someone will cause that person to think less of the person you’re speaking about, then don’t say it. » A lady keeps confidences. She knows it’s important to protect the confidences that others have entrusted to her, never sharing without one’s permission. » A lady dresses as a lady. She always wants the attention to be on those she’s with; therefore, she never dresses in a way that causes the attention of others to be on her. » A lady never draws attention to unpleasant things. Unless it uplifts others, refrain from speaking about it unless necessary. » A lady knows when to speak and when not to. As ladies, we pay close attention to conversation, being careful not to speak too long, too loud, or about topics that aren’t relevant to the conversation. » A lady is well educated. All ladies should

cherish learning and strive to be “lifelong ” learners, never tiring of self improvement. » A lady is benefit to her society. Ladies know that contributing to their society in even the smallest way is her duty and her honor. » A lady accepts all. Ladies know that every life deserves love, honor, and respect; therefore, she exemplifies one that looks upon the heart of a person, rather than skin, religion, or any other physical or social difference.
