full month of summer before heading into the cooler days of fall. August is typically the back-toschool month, and here in Tennessee, it is a month where the focus turns to tailgaiting parties, football, and wrapping Knoxville in the color orange. Photo by D. Roberts Photography When growing up in Wisconsin, I always looked forward to August, because that was the month of our family vacation before we headed back to school. My family would rent a cottage in northern Wisconsin on a lake, and we’d enjoy a week or two of such fun. We’d take hikes, ride bikes on trails, pick berries, take boat rides, go fishing, swimming, and relax in the sun. That family time together created some very fond memories, and we had fun without the benefit of television, video games, or cell phones. We created our own fun. It has been many years since I’ve been back to northern

Wisconsin, but since living in East Tennessee, my Wisconsin memories come flooding back when I enjoy time in the Smokies, boating and fishing on Tellico Lake, fly fishing on the river, and taking some quiet time at our cottage on the river rapids – all unplugged from the digital world. We have so much to enjoy here in East Tennessee, and families need to unplug and take time to build some great vacation memories before their kids go back to school. In the Knoxville area, we have some great events and activities that are available. Take a look at our events calendar in this edition and you’ll see that there is no shortage of family fun opportunities. Now go out there and create some lifetime memories this year as you enjoy the rest of the summer season.

Navigating Today’s

Financial Planning Marketplace

A

TTEMPTING TO navigate the financial planning marketplace can be challenging, particularly if you are attempting to go it alone. Many investors, whether just

beginning their careers or preparing for retirement, discover that retaining a financial planner can prove to be invaluable when trying to navigate today’s financial marketplace. But selecting a financial planner can become just as a daunting task as making do-it-yourself financial decisions. 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2016

In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to introduce our readers to John Fawaz, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Practitioner and founder of Financial Partners of TN, LLC. Although John may be a familiar face to many of you who have seen him on WATE-TV or heard him speak publicly on a variety of financial topics, it is hoped that our interview will help introduce you to Financial Partners of TN, LLC and answer questions you may have about selecting a qualified financial planner. EK: John, what inspired you to become a financial planner? John: My father owned an aluminum manufacturing company with more than 100 employees. At a very early age, after being inspired by my father’s entrepreneurship, I decided that I wanted to join my father in running his business. So I decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. During my junior year, I received a call from my dad telling me that his business was failing and he had no choice but to close the plant. Because nearly everything he owned was invested in his business, I found it necessary to support myself. I tried a variety of careers, but what interested me the most was the financial service industry, where I discovered the importance helping clients create and implement a comprehensive financial plan. I only wished that my dad had met with a qualified financial planner. Things might have turned out much better for him. After my work in the financial planning field, I launched Financial Partners of TN, LLC and have never regretted my choice. EK: Where did you attend college? John: I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in mechanical engineering. Although I never pursued engineering, the discipline I learned as an engineering student has proved invaluable in the financial planning marketplace, particularly as I worked full-time while earning my degree. EK: People are understandably confused about how to select a qualified financial planner. What advice can you offer our readers? John: Finding a qualified advisor is both challenging and critical, as many individuals in the financial services marketplace identify themselves as “financial planners.” CFP® professionals, on the other hand, have completed extensive training and experience requirements and are held to rigorous ethical standards. They understand all the complexities of the ever-changing financial marketplace and will make recommendations based entirely on your best interest. I’ve always recommended you do thorough research on

any financial planner that you might be considering. The Brokercheck link at FINRA.org is a great resource for learning about a financial planner’s qualifications, experience, and registrations they may hold. EK: Tell our readers about your involvement with LPL Financial. John: We are independent Investment Consultants registered with LPL Financial, one of the nation’s leading financial services companies and the largest independent broker-dealer.* I was honored to be LPL’s Patriot Club. This distinct honor is awarded to less than 10% of the firm’s approximately 14,000 advisors nationwide and is based on an annual production of all registered advisors supported by LPL. EK: Help our readers get to know you a little bit better. On a purely personal level, what are you most passionate about? John: Aside from my passion for financial planning, I would have to say traveling. I travel frequently for both business and pleasure. I grew up traveling with my parents and my three sisters and brother. My sisters live in England, France, and Nigeria. While I have traveled the world extensively, there’s no better place to live or people to surround yourself with than Knoxville and its people. This is my 26th year in Knoxville. I enjoy an active lifestyle, which has included marathons, half Iron Man Competition, CrossFit, and yoga. EK: How do the trust, education, and experience you have achieved in your career help you in your financial planning practice? John: There are many good planners in the financial marketplace today, but I believe that what really makes us successful the fact that three different area financial institutions have entrusted us with providing financial advice to their valued customers. We are the exclusive Investment Consultants for the customers of UT Federal Credit Union, UBank, and Peoples Bank of the South. This is a big responsibility, which I don’t take lightly. I am also a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Chartered Financial Consultant, and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and have been a practicing financial planner for more than 18 years. EK: Our readers may be familiar with you from your appearances on Knoxville’s ABC affiliate, WATE. John: I’ve been fortunate to have been asked by WATE to provide financial expertise on different financial topics for past four years. In addition, I am an instructor at the University of Tennessee non-credit program and regularly speak to area groups on a variety of financial

subjects. EK: Tell us about Financial Partners TN, LLC’s philosophy. John: We take a holistic approach to life planning, no matter where you are in life. Whether you are just getting started in life or winding down a successful career, you have goals and dreams. We engage you in an ongoing conversation about your needs, goals, and objectives to help you pursue the life plan that’s right for you. The most important lesson I’ve learned in business was from a true professional I consider to be my mentor – the president of UBank. “Treat people like you would like to be treated, and place honesty above everything.” That is the motto that I live by in my life. EK: Although the answer may appear obvious to many, why is it important to initiate a comprehensive financial plan earlier in life rather than waiting until later? John: The biggest misconception is that you need to have accumulated a large amount of money in order to meet with a financial planner, and as younger people are in the accumulation stage, they often postpone meeting with a financial planner until much later. Nothing could be further from the truth. Start planning early and let compound interest and time go to work for you. I meet regularly with older clients who wished they had started planning for retirement much earlier. Planning late leaves you with fewer options, although better late than never. We are procrastinators by nature, and we all live busy lives. Investing a few hours of your time now planning might save you years of disappointment. EK: You are involved in many organizations. Tell our readers about your community involvement. John: I currently serve on a variety of nonprofit community boards. Giving back to a community that has given my family so much has truly been an enjoyable experience. My community involvement includes the past presidency of the East Tennessee Financial Planning Association and serving on the board of directors of Leadership Knoxville. EK: How can people learn more about Financial Partners of TN, LLC? John: Your readers can call our office at 865558-8182 or visit www.financialpartnerstn. com, where we would be willing to answer any questions they may have.

WHILE MANY

independent health practices are being swallowed up by huge hospital conglomerates, I remain a solo practice with an all-female staff where we strive to provide a level of compassionate caring for our patients that is growing increasingly more difficult to find today. In fact, with our October relocation to an all-new, state-of-the-art medical office in Bearden, we will be expanding the gynecological services we offer to our patients. With the belief that women’s health care should be affordable, our patients can now take advantage of the MonaLisa Touch® laser therapy, which treats vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and urge incontinence at the lowest price in the Knoxville area. We also offer low cash payment options for Gyn Ultrasounds, Dexa Bone Density Screenings, and 4D Obstetric Ultrasounds. With so many patients having high deductibles, this may be a better option for many. My passion for women’s health and medicine has only grown since I first started my practice 28 years ago. We strive to provide all of our patients with the latest technological medical advancements, at prices they can afford, with an all-female staff committed to your privacy, empathy, and understanding. Our investment in our newest facility will enable us to maintain our level of patient care that will go above and beyond what you might have come to believe was available. To learn more about our full-service gynecological medical practice, which I am confident will exceed your expectations, as well as updates on the projected October opening of our newest, state-of-the-art medical office located on Kingston Pike in nearby Bearden, I invite you to follow us on Facebook or visit us at www.edmundsgynecology.com. When it comes to women’s health and medicine, you deserve the very best treatment available!

DISASTERS AFFECT everyone. With increases in weather related disasters such as tornadoes, floods, power outages, and severe winter weather in recent years, we feel this deserves the attention of all who live in East Tennessee. The goal of the Family Safety & Preparedness Fair is to assist and empower those living in East Tennessee by providing relevant information, resources, and skills needed to protect themselves, their families, and community. While teaming with local agencies and organizations dedicated to emergencies and disasters, the fair will be able to provide access to a wide spectrum of knowledge and draw a broad range of participants.

This family-friendly event features educational and informative booths, vendors, classes, kids zone, food trucks, and more. Examples of vendors and points of interest include emergency communication plans, family preparedness, and food and water storage. In addition to building a family disaster kit, the Knoxville Police Department will address how to respond when threatened with an active shooter. Knoxville Utilities Board will address home safety during storms, and the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine will educate the public about keeping pets safe during disasters. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.prepfair.org.

Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN

Skin Elements: Elastin is a highly elastic protein found in connective tissue that allows skin to return to its original shape after being stretched, pulled, or pinched. Collagen, another protein, provides strength, flexibility, and resilience through a fibrous network for the growth of cells and blood vessels. In other words, it is the support framework for the skin. When skin is young, the collagen network is intact, allowing skin to retain structure and elasticity. As the body’s natural collagen production declines with age and lifestyle factors (e.g. stress, poor diet, health imbalances, etc.), skin loses its tone, and facial lines and wrinkles begin to appear. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring simple sugar that has great ability to attract and retain moisture. It also provides plumpness, firmness, and suppleness to the skin. The Microneedling Procedure (Collagen PIN): This is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), and it is a minimally invasive skin procedure. 1. Hyaluronic acid is applied to the selected treatment area, both for the chemical benefits of the substance and because it helps the Collagen PIN glide smoothly over the skin. (Picture the smooth glide of a razor using shaving cream versus bare skin that “catches” the razor.) 2. The Collagen PIN contains 36 tiny, sterile, single-use, disposable needles that move up and down to create microscopic skin channels that will stimulate the body to fill with new naturally produced collagen and elastin. This, in effect, creates a controlled skin injury, without pain, because the needles are super tiny. 3. The small channels in the skin close very quickly, and the healing response begins right away. Post-procedure response: Depending on the depth of the treatment, the skin may only have a slight inflammation (similar to that of a sunburn), or there may be some small pinpoint bleeding that stops almost immediately. Outstanding Features of the Collagen PIN: » It is safe, simple, and efficient. » The needle penetration depths are adjustable. » Microneedling can treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, pore size, surgical scars, hyperpigmented skin, and stretch marks. » It can be repeated safely and used on all areas of the body, some where laser treatments and deep peels are not usually performed. » It can be performed on all skin types and colors. » Since the procedure does not use heat, there is no risk of burning the patient, such as in laser treatments. This reduces patient discomfort, downtime, and complications.

B Y watercolor artist Kate McCullough and glass artist Johnny Glass are on display August 1-28 at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception is on August 5 at 5:30 pm, with complimentary refreshments and music performed by Patrick Mulligan. Kate McCullough Kate first studied art at Villa Maria College and SUNY in Buffalo, NY, before switching to interior design, which was her career until 2008. The fine art bug struck again in 2002 when she decided to pick up a brush again. Kate took courses at the University of Tennessee and workshops with John Salminen, Sue Archer, Linda Kemp, Linda Baker, Paul Jackson, Don Lake, Don Andrews, and Keiko Tanabe. “I look at life as through a prism of shapes and colors and see the beauty I hadn’t seen before,” said Kate. “The world of painting is a magical place where the looking glass is only limited by my imagination. The goal for my art is to not only reach that deeper place, but to offer something to the viewer that could reach a place in them that has meaning as well.” This exhibit features scenes from around Knoxville, mostly from the downtown area. Her focus is to present these locations as either a place one may not often notice or familiar scenes presented just a little differently. Johnny Glass A Knoxville native, Johnny began his glass career and training in Los Angeles, where he was introduced to glass at Santa Monica College. In 2010, he started Glass by Glass LLC on the west coast, and in 2013, he expanded his market and returned to Knoxville to open Glass by Glass’s east coast mobile hot shop and to finish his education. He spent three years at Tennessee Technological University’s Appalachian Center for Crafts, studying under world famous glassblower and teacher, Curtis Brock. He recently graduated from TTU with honors and a BFA in Glass. Glass by Glass brings a new awareness and social practice to the art of glass blowing. Johnny has designed his own studio equipment to be completely mobile, and live glassblowing demonstrations take place at many art museums and craft festivals. Weighing the Long-Term Care Decision Presentation by Yvonne Marsh, CPA

S I TALK with clients about retirement

planning, I find their biggest concern is how much money they could lose in a stock market downturn. But an even bigger threat to the safety of a very carefully accumulated nest egg may surprise you – it’s actually an unexpected Yvonne Marsh, CPA health event requiring long-term care. With the average cost of an assisted living facility $40,000+/ year and a full-skilled care facility $70,000+/year, it’s a part of retirement planning that can’t be ignored by retirees or their adult children. Several options exist to pay for long-term care: 1. Self-insure and rely on family members Pros: If you never need long-term care, you haven’t spent money on unnecessary premiums. Cons: It’s difficult to amass enough wealth to fund full-skilled care. A couple’s funds can be depleted providing care for the first spouse, leaving the second spouse with few options. Additionally, many people balk at their adult children helping them with daily activities of living. 2. Rely on the government Pros: Minimal cost. Cons: Medicare covers a very short time in fullskilled care only, while Medicaid requires you to be impoverished and gives you little control over the facility in which you will live. Neither covers home health or assisted living. 3. Use traditional long-term care insurance Pros: Annual premiums provide insurance benefits for a variety of assisted living and full-skill facilities. Cons: Premiums can increase over time, and it has the “use it or lose it” stigma of paying for something you may never use. 4. Asset-based long-term care insurance Pros: Allows you to reposition a portion of your savings into a type of life policy that provides a multiplied amount of your investment, tax free, if you need long-term care. There’s no “use it or lose it” – your investment turns into an inheritance for your heirs, or you can cancel the policy and request your money back. Cons: Need to have the necessary investment minimum of $35,000 already saved, though 10-year flex pay funding options are available. As a financial planner, my job is to discuss the pros and cons of each scenario and decide which one makes sense for your unique circumstances. Call to schedule a complimentary conversation about your health care needs in retirement.

UMMER OFFERS us

varieties of fruits and vegetables unmatched by any other season. Almost any local farmers’ market will offer a glimpse of what is available at this time. The colors, aromas, and tastes of the food all contribute to mouthwatering samplings that anyone can enjoy in its raw form. If you ever considered a raw fare, now is the time – not only because of the abundance of what the season offers, but because the temperature is sweltering. Cooking food produces warmth in the body, whereas eating raw has a cooling effect. Raw food diets consist of meals that are based on unprocessed and uncooked plant foods, preferably organic, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouted grains, sprouted beans, and seaweed. Sprouting and dehydration techniques offer much variety in what could seem to be an uneventful way of eating. Cream sauces from avocados and seeds make eating raw gratifying and delectable. Smoothies made of bananas, berries,

kale, and coconut water can be delightful on these hot summer days. The benefits of eating raw include weight loss, increased immunity, more energy, vitality, alkalinity, and cooling effects. Becoming more aware of which foods create cooling effects allow us to make better informed, conscious decisions when we are suffering in the heat. Some examples of cooling foods are cucumbers, watermelon and other melons, berries such as blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and cranberries, sea vegetables, avocados, bananas, coconut, romaine lettuce, and mushrooms. These foods offer many vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals as well. Eating raw may not be our normal way of eating, but the benefits during hot summer months are too impressive to ignore. Summertime offers the perfect time to make these changes that may develop into a lifestyle for some. Remember that change in diet should correlate with change in season. If you want to beat the heat this summer, let food help.

Don’t Forget Essential Oils in Your Back-to-School Planning I T’S THAT TIME once again... back-

to-school. Gone are the lazy days of summer and in comes the hustle and bustle of getting the wee ones ready for another school year. It is enough to make the sane just a tiny bit batty, right? There are essential oils that can help with the impending mayhem that is about to occur. A little lavender in the car on the way to buy school supplies and clothes can make the experience more pleasurable for all. It can also ease sticker shock at the checkout counter when you view the bill. Diffusing essential oils in the car on the way to school each morning can help start the day off right for everyone, including the family dog, who gets to help take his kids to school. They are great for easing anxious feelings (for kids and parents) on the first day of school, during test days, and just when the school schedule is nuts. And for those parents about to experience “empty nest syndrome” with a child going to college, yes, there are oils for that, too.

Diffusing essential oils in the car on the way to school each morning can help start the day off right for everyone, including the family dog, who gets to help take his kids to school.

Essential oils that come from trees are great for calming the mind and promoting focus. Lemon, peppermint and rosemary, patchouli and lime are also oils that help with learning challenges and just plain ole day dreaming. Let’s not forget that the beginning of school also means it is time to work on boosting everyone’s immune system, too. We all know what season is right around the corner, and it

isn’t fall we are talking about. Everyone in the family can use the oils to get a jump on this! A good night’s rest is very important for a productive day at school, and once again, essential oils can come to the rescue in getting the little ones trained on their school night bedtimes. Stop by and let us know how we can help you make this school year better and less stressful. We are always excited to share essential oil knowledge with you. Stay tuned for our new class schedule coming in September! Knox Essential Oils is located at 4928 Homberg Drive in Knoxville. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm.

East Tennessee Historical Society Awards History Day Scholarships

T

HE E AST TENNESSEE

Historical Society awarded three scholarships to students who participated in the East Tennessee History Day competition, a division of National History Day presented by the East Tennessee Historical Society. The scholarships are made possible annually through the generous donations of Randy and Jenny Boyd, known across the state for their strong support of education. Randy is a former ETHS board member, and Jenny currently serves on the ETHS board of directors. The scholarships include two East Tennessee History Day Scholarships for outstanding primary source research on East Tennessee topics and the East Tennessee History Day Business and Technology Scholarship for outstanding primary source research on a business and/or technology topic. First place for the East Tennessee History Scholarship was awarded to Noah Dunlap from the L&N STEM Academy, Knoxville. Noah participated in a senior group exhibit titled “The 1982 World’s Fair: Knoxville’s Rise to Prominence,” which analyzed the fair as a turning point in Knoxville’s history that drew people from around the world to explore

energy development. “My experiences in National History Day competition have made me a demonstrably better student,” said Noah. “I have been pushed to look beyond surface level text and delve deeper into the driving forces behind events. I genuinely feel a deeper appreciation now for East Tennessee and American history.” Noah’s project won first place at district and second place at the state competition. Second place for the East Tennessee Scholarship was awarded to Kendall Williamson from Cosby High School. Kendall produced a senior individual documentary called “A Pioneer in the Sky: Kiffin Rockwell” that explored the life and legacy of Rockwell, a Newport, Tennessee native and WWI pilot who died in 1916 while serving in the French service. “Our history keeps us moving forward,” said Kendall. “We must know the past to fix the future, or we will go nowhere but in circles. I am very grateful to National History Day, because it has taught me how to step up and take control of projects and to not be nervous when giving speeches.” Kendall’s project won second place at both district and state.

Abigail Prosise of Farragut High School was the recipient of the East Tennessee History Day Business and Technology Scholarship with her project “From Atoms to Armstrong.” The senior individual website examined the connections, collaborations, and resulting technological achievements of two opposing groups, Jewish physicists and Nazi rocketeers, brought to America for scientific research after WWII. “I know my passion for history will make me a better person, because learning about the past helps all of us make better decisions about the future,” said Abigail. Abigail’s project won first place at district and second place at state. About the East Tennessee Historical Society Established in 1834, the East Tennessee Historical Society has been helping East Tennesseans hold on to our unique heritage – recording the events, collecting the artifacts, and saving the stories that comprise the history we all share. The historical society pursues its education mission through publications, lectures, conferences, school programs, museum exhibits, and heritage programs. August 2016 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Random Acts of Flowers ANDOM ACTS OF FLOWERS is honored to have

received and repurposed the flowers used at the Pat Summitt Memorial event Thursday, July 14th at ThompsonBoling Arena. The following day teams of volunteers, including incoming UT freshmen, their parents, and UT alumni, joined with regular RAF volunteers to repurpose those flowers, creating approximately 300 beautiful new bouquets for delivery to senior care facilities that serve Alzheimer’s and memory care patients. During a time of great sorrow for Knoxville, many of our community members found comfort in providing joy and encouragement to promote well-being in

some of those most in need in our community. Thank you to our volunteers, the UT Women’s Athletic Department, and to our recipient partner facilities for helping us pull off this momentous

It’s Your Face

NE OF THE fastest growing areas

in aesthetic medicine today is the use of injectable cosmetic fillers. These soft tissue fillers, which are injected into the skin, help to fill facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance. There are a wide range of fillers on the market today that are manufactured by a number of reputable pharmaceutical companies, each who have their own unique features and benefits. As to which filler is best for you, I would recommend that you consult with a trained and licensed medical professional with experience in the field of aesthetic medicine. While it’s not unusual for patients to take advantage of special offers available on these fillers, I encourage you to exercise caution here. No matter how great the offer is, remember that it’s your face. The money you save is no replacement for a licensed and experienced medical professional who I recommend inject your filler. And a great savings is no guarantee that the filler you receive is the best filler for you. At The Face Place™, I perform every facial filler injection. I am an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice. I am also a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. I have trained extensively with each facial filler company many times and keep this training current with any and all new techniques recommended. I founded The Face Place™ for individuals just like you who wish to take advantage on non-surgical facial rejuvenation in a relaxed medical setting. Patients should have total confidence not only in the facial filler being recommended, but also in the medical professional that provides the services. If you would like to learn how you can enjoy a more youthful and younger version of yourself, with the confidence in the medical provider that you deserve, I would like to invite you to call me to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a new, longer lasting, more natural looking, youthful you.

Are Your Investments Going Nowhere on the Carousel of Low Interest Rates? ‘Going Nowhere Fast’ can be bad enough, but investments with very low returns may actually be going Backward when you consider the loss of purchasing power due to inflation. So with interest rates at these historically low levels, are you looking for a relatively lower-risk way to keep up with the rising cost of living? The Wells Fargo Advisors’ Diversified Stock Income Plan (DSIP) might well be the strategy that you can use.

Learn about DSIP in 3 Steps

1

Watch the DSIP video at ... www.OrganizedInvestor.com

The Diversified Stock Income Plan is a three-part strategy. 1. We use a very disciplined approach to stock selection. 2. We look primarily for mature defensive stocks with the potential to grow. 3. We diversify by choosing stocks from different market and economic sectors.

2

Take a picture as a reminder

We believe investors of all ages can potentially benefit from the power of rising dividends with our Diversified Stock Income Plan. • Retired seniors on a fixed income have the potential to get additional income through anticipated dividend increases, regardless of what stock prices do. • Baby boomers building retirement portfolios can potentially benefit, especially if they can reinvest the dividends. • Young investors can potentially benefit from the possibility of decades of dividend growth and reinvestment.

3

Contact us with questions

Our Diversified Stock Income Plan is a list of closely monitored, high-quality stocks chosen for their potential to raise dividends in the future. Consistently rising dividends, over a long term, may help provide a growing income stream for conservative, income-oriented equity investors looking to outpace the rising costs of living.

So no matter what your age, if you’re looking for a relatively lower-risk way to help keep up with the high cost of living, DSIP may be right for you. Diversified Stock Income Plan (DSIP List) -

DSIP List Recommendations:

A complete listing of all DSIP List recommendations is available upon request, which includes the date and price of each initial recommendation, the date and price of the recommendation at the end of the period (or when liquidation was suggested), whichever was earlier. Wells Fargo Advisors has developed this list to help our clients with their financial goals, however Wells Fargo Advisors also recognizes that every client has a unique investment objective, risk tolerance, and time horizon for their various investments; therefore securities on the DSIP List may not be appropriate for all investors.

Trailing Returns & Growth Calculations

Actual results for clients may differ to those presented due to various factors, including but not limited to, commission or transaction costs, as well as the timing of specific security transactions. List performance is calculated by geometric linking daily security returns. Dividends are reinvested on the Ex-date. The list is equal weighted, which assumes each security is given the same (or equal) market value. The list is rebalanced when changes are made or at the end of the year if no changes were made during the preceding calendar year. We measure all performance from the time each stock is added to the list to the time that it is removed, or the last date of the measurement period. There are times when a deleted stock has been reinstated, in which case its performance is treated as two separate positions. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged market capitalization-weighted index and no transaction costs are included in its performance. You cannot invest directly in an index.

Disclosure

Stocks are subject to market risk which means that their value may fluctuate in response to general economic and market conditions. There is no guarantee that dividend-paying stocks will return more than the overall stock market. Dividends can be increased, decreased or totally eliminated at any point without notice. Diversification does not guarantee profit or protect against loss in declining markets. Wells Fargo Advisors publishes several theme-based lists of recommended equity securities. Each list is based on a specific investment objective and time horizon which may be different from the other lists. This may cause Wells Fargo Advisors to recommend an equity security to be added to one list and removed from another list. Thus, one list may contain different recommendations or conclusions that could result in short-term price movements contrary to the recommendations in another list. Umphrey’s McGee at the Tennessee Theatre A

FTER 17-PLUS years of performing more than 100 con-

certs annually, releasing eight studio albums, and selling more than 3.5 million tracks online, Umphrey’s McGee might be forgiven if they chose to rest on their laurels. But then that wouldn’t be consistent with the work ethic demonstrated by the band, which consistently attempts to raise the bar, setting and achieving new goals since forming on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, IN, in 1997. After releasing their eighth studio album, Similar Skin, the first for their own indie label, Nothing Too Fancy (N2F) Music (distributed by RED), the group continue to push the envelope and test the limits. Their brand-new studio album, The London Session, was a dream come true for the members having been recorded at the legendary Studio Two at historic Abbey Road. The stealth recording session yielded 10 tracks in a single day, proving once again that the prolific UM waits for no one. The original Umphrey’s McGee played a mix of originals and cover songs, waiting just eight months to release their debut album, the cheekily titled Greatest Hits Volume III. Their initial “proper” recording, Local Band Does OK, came out in 2002, followed shortly afterward by an appearance at the first-ever Bonnaroo in Tennessee, selling more albums than any other band on the bill. The 2007 double album, Live at the Murat, earned a four-star review in Rolling Stone and a Jammy for Best Live Album. Despite attempts at categorizing UM, the band has devoted its craft to making their devoted followers feel as if they are part of something larger, through such technology-fueled innovations as fancurated sets, the immersive high-end audio offering, “Headphones & Snowcones,” where the pristine sound of the live soundboard mix is piped wirelessly through high-end personal monitor systems and headphones, as well as making every live show since 2005 available via their live music portal UMLive.net. UM was also the first group to launch its own single-artist streaming service. Last year’s Similar Skin saw Umphrey’s McGee aim to strut their rock and progressive roots, with touchstones ranging from the Police and U2 (“The Linear”), the Beatles (“No Diablo”), Nirvana (“Loose Ends”), and Led Zeppelin (“Hindsight”) to Metallica, Soundgarden, and Pantera (“Puppet String”) and even the symphonic rock of Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Yes, or Genesis (the closing nine-minute live staple, “Bridgeless,” finally committed to record). “Every night we have the opportunity to play whatever and however long we want,” said singer/guitarist Brendan Bayliss. “Going into the studio, the challenge was to be as concise as possible, to trim all the fat we could.” Umphrey’s McGee will be at the Tennessee Theatre on August 19 at 8:30 pm. Hiring an Interior Designer: Luxury or Necessity? WITH

TODAY’S overwhelming choices in home furnishings, a professional is no longer a luxury but a necessity. A designer’s role is to professionally assist you in creating the décor of your choice in your home or “lifestyle” design. An interior designer can also help you prevent costly mistakes. Have you ever questioned how to select a designer? Many times the only option has been to hire designers that charge a fee for their time. But what happens if it’s obvious within the first hour or two that you just aren’t going to click with that designer? Unfortunately, you’re left feeling very uncomfortable (sometimes intimidated) and you’re back to square one, having accomplished nothing. In most instances, Decorating Den Interiors charges not by the hour but for the product(s) you purchase only. We also offer an introductory design consultation at no charge. 5 Basic Tips to Enjoy Working with an Interior Designer:

Advantages of Single-Story Living

Home

A

F F O R D A B I L I T Y and

single-story design make the ranch style home one of the most prolific residential home designs in America, but today’s ranch house plans are anything but simple and plain. The latest designs come in all shapes and sizes to meet your needs, budget, and lifestyle. You can expect to discover flexible rooms, open kitchen, living, and dining areas, extended outdoor living spaces, tons of amenities, and simple, yet elegant exterior features to reflect various architectural styles. One-story homes offer more flexibility in the design of the interiors than multi-level homes, because a combined space can serve multiple functions. One-story living spaces allow for an interior design that has vaulted ceilings, dramatic windows, and the use of skylights to add a spacious feel. They almost always have an open living space that combines the dining room, living room, and kitchen to create a comfortable and cozy place for families to gather. One-story houses are also generally more efficient to heat and cool, saving you money and making you more comfortable year-round. Circulation in a one-story home is more fluid, because all the rooms flow into each other. One-story homes also do not require regular physical taxing use of steps and stairways, granting access to the entire home for those with limited mobility. Additionally, thoughtful layouts make households easier to maintain. For example, bedrooms are located close to the laundry facilities, greatly minimizing the work and time of transporting laundry loads to and fro. Kitchens are also located nearer to the bedrooms than other general spaces with immediate access to the garage. Ultimately, a one-story house is more convenient. With a two-story house, you inevitably want what’s on the other floor. Having a onestory house makes it easier to keep an eye on children, and noise is less of a problem when there’s no one overhead. If you need to make changes down the road, having an open, flexible floor plan will make that an easy and affordable remodel. It is undeniable that many homeowners building their new dream home are looking for a long-term place to settle, and what good is space if it becomes too difficult to access? Many people are looking to the future, building dream homes in which they can live for the remainder of their lives. These people want enough space they can access independently. Typically no

one puts in the time and effort to build a home they will only occupy for a short period of time. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to consider that there is a trend forming in dream home construction – the one-story home is gaining rapid popularity not just for baby boomers, but for all generations. There are a great many things to consider when building; however, builder Jenny Blalock’s specialty is helping to take the stress out of the process and making your dream home a reality. At Luxe Homes & Design, they style your home around your life. They work closely with you to decide which floor plan is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle. They

Community Design Center (ETCDC) presents the inaugural Urban Home & Garden Tour on Friday, August 5, from 5:30 to 8 pm and Saturday, August 6, from 11 am to 4 pm. Starting with the check-in station at the historic Phoenix Building, located at 418 S. Gay Street, the tour will offer access to downtown Knoxville spaces with extraordinary outdoor components. Tickets for the event are $30 each, and all proceeds will benefit the Design Center. “This self-guided tour of downtown will allow individuals to see creative outdoor features in downtown Knoxville that will inspire participants to truly utilize the outdoor areas around their own homes and see what downtown has to offer as a residential option,” said Wayne Blasius, Executive Director for the East Tennessee Community Design Center. Featured properties on the tour include Crown Court Condos, Emporium Lofts, Gallery Lofts, Jackson Ateliers, Kendrick Place, Marble

Alley Lofts, The Carson, and The Holston. “Many people think they have to live outside the city center to have great outdoor options,” said Daryl Johnson, ETCDC board member and Urban Home & Garden Tour committee chair. “The Urban Home & Garden Tour will overturn that assumption, and attendees will enjoy residential buildings that are rich with history and fresh with original design and charm.” For more information, visit www.communitydc. org/event/etcdc-urban-home-and-garden-tour. Kids’ Cluttered Closets You Can Win the Battle

I

F YOU’RE A PARENT, you’ve

probably proclaimed this familiar battle cry: “Clean up your room!” And nowhere is the battleground more intense than in children’s closets. More often than not, kids are messy because they are usually relegated to the smaller rooms of a house with tiny closets that aren’t designed for their needs. The right closet design will virtually eliminate a messy room. Whether you have a pre-schooler or high schooler, a closet should provide flexible space to meet your child’s needs today while thinking about their future. Also, helping kids keep their closets clutter-free teaches them organization skills at an early age. So after taking everything out of their closet and determining what stays and what goes, remember to: » Get your child’s input: Ask for your child’s thoughts when designing a closet. When kids help with the organization, they feel a part of the solution versus being told what to do. Kids are more likely to maintain a

clean closet if they help create it. » View the space as a child: Get down on your knees. Look at the closet from a child’s view. When you’re looking up, you might find it’s hard to see and even harder to reach certain areas. Child-size storage and accessibility are key for children. » Integrate pull-out baskets: Sturdy, wire baskets make it easy for a child to see their toys or older children to quickly identify clothing items. They can also be used for tossing dirty clothes. Adding baskets on open shelves helps control clutter buildup. » Include shoe shelves: More often than not your children’s shoes end up in a pile on the floor. Dedicated shelving will help them keep their shoes organized. » Use adjustable rods: If kids can’t easily reach hangers, they’re not going to put things away. For younger children, hang rods at lower, child-friendly levels. As a child grows, those rods are adjusted to accommodate bigger clothing items.

(865) 947-8686

!

» Buy color hangers: For younger children, establish a color-coded hanger system that will be used for different types of clothes. Separate kids’ clothes into categories of school, play, and dress. Pairing up matching outfits and storing them on one hanger makes it really simple. » Put hooks inside: Placed within a child’s reach along the inside walls, hooks keep accessories such as caps and belts organized and easy to reach. Or hang the next day’s outfit to simplify the morning routine. Helping kids organize their closet also has an automatic self-benefit: When they’re more organized, you have time to do the things you want!

Don’t Replace, Resurface!

D

O YOU NEED updates in your

kitchen or bathroom? Do you like to save time and money? These people do. Here’s what they and many others are saying about Resurfacing Solutions:

“Resurfacing Solutions did an outstanding job on 30-year-old kitchen counters and shower stalls in a rental property. Everything now looks new, and all for a fraction of what it would’ve cost for replacements. Several neighbors and family members have peeked inside, and they can’t believe they’re the original countertops and showers. Thanks for a fantastic job!” – A.H., Knoxville “Our shower stall looked old and dingy. A friend recommended we get it resurfaced. I’m so glad we did; it looks like we bought a brand new stall but for A LOT less money. We had a small area that needed to be touched up (our fault), and they came back right away and fixed it free of charge.” – L.L., Knoxville “We love our new countertops! The guys were very professional, prompt, and trustworthy! Everything was clean and back in order when they finished. We highly recommend them. Just do it; you won’t be sorry!” – H.Z., Knoxville TN

It’s Great to Be Eight Years Strong! I almost cannot believe our summer has come to an end. All the scheduling that seemed overwhelming at the beginning of summer has come and gone, and I am both relieved as well as a bit remorseful. As I glance through my own home, it’s obvious it is going to need some TLC before I gear up for fall barbeques and weekend get-togethers. Enter the “honey-do list.” Luckily there is one chore my husband, John, doesn’t mind tackling in our home. But it wasn’t always so.

EIGHT YEARS AGO, before we began

the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried most every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never succumbed to his efforts. I had the same issues cleaning my own tile and grout kitchen floor, and there was little he could do to help me. So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband was skeptical. His skepticism gave way to sheer excitement as he saw what these magical tools could do. He still gets giddy from time to time when he encounters a floor that looks beyond help that he can transform into something beautiful.

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

That first week we practiced in our own home, and I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they were equally thrilled. Here’s what I’ve learned during the last eight years. Every now and then, even the most wellcared for and well-maintained house needs an occasional deep cleaning – cleaning places that are not in a regular cleaning schedule or places that are hard to clean. Dirt contaminants build up over time and cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. Dirt becomes trapped within the pores of your floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures. Surface Doc has some really cool equipment that simply does what we can’t possibly

do on our own. With a combination of high heat, high pressure, and a powerful spinning brush, all contained under a CO-OWNER pressure hood, your floors will have no John choice but to release Fitzwilliam the soil and contaminants buried deep within them. This process allows for the complete removal of years of build-up within your floor. If it’s time for your floors to look new again, give Surface Doc and John a call.

Are You Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces to Their Fullest?

Home

I

F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with re-

tractable screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. Homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. Unfortunately, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect solutions to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. One of the best features of retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to complement your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are called for. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

HAT IS IT about “good” music that strikes such a deep chord with us – no matter where it comes from? Is it the genre, the beat, the instruments, the notes, the voice, or something else? Exploring answers to this question has been a rewarding 20+ year journey for Karthick Iyer, culminating in the creation of his own unique style of music called

IndoSoul. An electric violin, a mridangam, an acoustic guitar, bass, and drums along with vocals form the core of the band. Often seen collaborating with diverse musicians, the band breaks down superficial barriers between genres, instruments, cultures, and languages to bring out deep commonalities that define IndoSoul.

Powered by eBay, Premiere Consignment now provides you with the opportunity to take full advantage of this selling phenomenon. “The key to success in selling many of your household items at the highest price available is to target a marketplace with the largest number of potential buyers,” said Premiere Consignment co-owner, Aaron Hunt. “With the power of eBay’s millions of buyers, products can often sell much faster and often at a higher price than you might experience under normal circumstances using just a consignment shop or newspaper classifieds.” Premiere Consignment has recently made a significant investment in photographic and lighting equipment, software and computer hardware, and a packing station designed to make the power of eBay available to you. Here’s how it works: 1. Items are evaluated for acceptance at our intake area located at Premiere Consignment. 2. Assignment of tracking number to accept items. 3. As items are sold, they are carefully packed and shipped to the winning bidder. “The key to success on eBay is to present your item in as professional a manner as possible,” said Aaron. “That’s why professional quality photos and wellwritten descriptions are essential.” Initially, Premiere Consignment will focus primarily on china, crystal, and collectibles, expanding their selection of offerings in the future. “The other important feature we offer our customers is our ratings,” said Aaron. “Ratings are very important to eBay buyers. Because of the quality of items we sell on eBay, we offer potential buyers the peace of mind that comes from selecting a seller with an established track record. Buyers are often reluctant to buy from a seller with no track record or a limited record.” To learn how to take advantage of a world of opportunity to sell many of your unused household items through Premiere Consignment, powered by eBay, call 865-458-9721 today.

“For a Clean That Can Be Seen”

A

T SUPERIOR Carpet & Rug Cleaning,

all Oriental rugs are washed by hand in our highly specialized, state-of-the-art facility using a proprietary process we developed during the past decade. There’s simply no in-home alternative to washing Oriental rugs. We call our process “For a Clean That Can Be Seen.” Because most homeowners are unfamiliar with Oriental rug washing, we created a short video demonstrating the proper methods to wash your valuable rugs and avoid the damage that can result when untrained and inexperienced individuals attempt to clean them. I encourage you to visit our website to view this informative video. I’ve devoted a large portion of my more than 25 year professional career researching information on the history, crafting, and caring for fine Oriental rugs, including visiting with individuals whose families have been hand-crafting quality Oriental rugs for three generations or more. Knowing how Oriental rugs are crafted is as important as knowing how to care for them, and because we help homeowners care for their rugs, this understanding is essential. There’s no correlation between wallto-wall carpet and fine Oriental rugs, and they can’t be cared for using the same methods. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is proud to announce that we’re a WoolSafe Approved Service Provider committed to promoting best practices in wool rug and carpet cleaning.

Oriental rug creation begins with a design that often has a historical significance unique to the region where it’s produced. Most rugs are handcrafted using fine, all-natural wool that’s been hand-dyed using a variety of organic dyes. The dyed wool yarn is then hand-knotted in rows onto a cotton or wool warp, with as many as 400 knots per square inch in the finest Persian rugs. Although they may appear fragile, the long-wearing Oriental rugs are rugged and can outlast conventional carpet by centuries if properly cared for. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has been helping families care for their fine Oriental rugs so they can be passed onto future generations as heirlooms. If their care is ignored, the rugs will have a much shorter life expectancy while depreciating in value. If you desire the beauty and longevity that was hand-crafted into your fine Oriental rugs, then we can help. Regardless of your rug’s value, we value and treat it accordingly. Call today or email and ask if our free pickup and delivery service is available where you live.

The project, released on Sugar Hill Records, marks the first time that the singersongwriter, a wildly popular touring artist who has produced all of his past efforts, has turned over the reins to a bona fide country music producer in Keith Stegall. The result is Smith’s most ambitious record yet, as well as a return on the investment made by the fans who have supported him since his first album in 2003.

Banding demonstrations will take place between 8 and 11:30 am. Hummingbirds are harmlessly captured, weighed, measured, and banded before

August in the Garden Y

AY! We survived July!

Our oldest daughter got married at our farmhouse, and having 100+ people coming to visit meant that every project that needed to be done during the past 10 years had to be done in a month. Meanwhile, here at Meadow View, one worker broke her ankle and another broke his arm! So we were shorthanded and overworked. If you came in to see me, I apologize if I was not as attentive as I should have been. My head felt like the inside of a pinball machine. The wedding was beautiful, and all our workers will be back to normal by the time you read this, so let’s talk about gardening! Reality check: I know that most of you are not going to be doing a tremendous amount of work in your yard and gardens during August. It is miserably hot and humid. However, unless you want your autumn to be an endless game of catch-up, there are things that need to be done.

» Monitor the water situation at your house. Some areas are getting a regular deluge, and others are bone dry. If you aren’t getting at least 1” of rain per week, you need to water. Remember that sprinkler systems are great for grass and annuals but do not provide enough water for trees and shrubs. Those need a drip system or hand watering. » Every day we have people coming in with baggies of spotted leaves. Fungal leaf spots are rampant, as is powdery mildew. Treat infected plants with a fungicide, and remove and destroy infected leaves. Plants with serious infections will benefit from a systemic product that is absorbed into the plant. » I am still seeing roses that are infected with the Rosette virus. Please be responsible and remove infected plants so you aren’t setting up an incubator for the mite that transmits the disease. New research says that you only have to

wait a month before replanting instead of a year. If your neighbors have infected plants, however, there is no point in replanting since the mites will just come back. Practice safe planting! » Insects are also a big problem this year. The Japanese beetles have descended on the roses and crepe myrtles, and I am seeing an abundance of aphids, white flies, mealybugs, lacebugs, and spider mites. If they are damaging your plants, treat them with an insecticide. If you have any questions, please ask us. That is why we are here. » How are your perennials doing? Daisies and coneflowers and other summer bloomers should be very happy right now. If not, check them for disease and insects. Also, be on the lookout for voles that nibble roots. » Tall, leggy perennials will benefit from a haircut. If there is new growth at the crown, cut it all the way down. If not, take back about 1/3 of the height. » You can also divide daylilies and iris now. There are a couple of ways to do it, so call if you have questions. » You may have a few perennials that have said “I’m done” and gone dormant until it cools down. My spiderwort did that. You may also have some that have checked out permanently. You can still plant perennials now, and we are getting fresh shipments to replace those that didn’t make it. » If your annuals don’t look as pretty as you would like, cut them back and give them some plant food or throw them away and start over. Seriously, life is too short for ugly plants. » If you have a hydrangea macrophylla (blooms are pink or blue) and you need to prune it, watch for it to stop making new blooms later this month. When it stops, you have four weeks to get the pruning done. If you wait later, it will have already set bud and you will cut off next year’s blooms. » Start cleaning up your veggie garden and plant broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale in mid to late August for a fall crop. » Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders and birdbaths clean and full. That is all for this month. Please call or stop by if you have questions. We are getting our fall shipments in of gift items, and fall plants will begin soon. Happy Dog Days!

AVE YOU PUT OFF updating your

kitchen for long enough? Maybe you would love a modern kitchen but are dreading the mess and expense that is typically involved with a remodeling project. Enter Kitchen TuneUp. This locally owned national franchise offers minor kitchen remodels. “We’re not selling our clients more than it takes to accomplish their goals according to their budget,” said local owner Ryan Thompson. “We once talked a client out of a new kitchen, because what she wanted could be accomplished through refacing and a couple of new cabinets. Needless to say, she saved lot of money.” Kitchen Tune-Up specializes in three services to update kitchens without clients having to empty their bank account. Their quick and affordable “Tune-Up” service is a wood reconditioning process that will make woodwork look like new. The process repairs and restores the original finish on wood cabinetry and other interior wood surfaces. Tuning up cabinets and adding new hardware is a fast and affordable way to refresh your space and can be completed in only one day. If your cabinet boxes are in good, solid condition, redooring may be a good option. By replacing the doors and drawer fronts, homeowners can change the style of their cabinets and keep the same color or paint their cabinet boxes. Redooring is very popular on white cabinets and painted cabinets and can typically be completed in one to three days. If the color and style are out of date, cabinet refacing is another option. In three to five days, a completely new look – subtle or dramatic – is apparent. Cabinet refacing enables clients to revitalize their kitchen with new doors, drawer fronts, and matching veneer while keeping the existing cabinet boxes in place. This creates a “new kitchen” look without the “new kitchen” price tag. Why has the business been so successful? “I think it’s because we stick with the basics such as returning phone calls, showing up on time, and completing the work as promised,” said Ryan. “This doesn’t sound difficult but is often lacking in the contracting business.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers custom cabinetry and storage solutions, including roll-out trays, closets, and garage cabinets, as well as countertops. To schedule an appointment or to discuss your kitchen needs, call Ryan and Michelle at 865253-7805 or visit www.kitchentuneup.com.

Beyond Mission Style W HEN IT COMES to fine,

hand-crafted Amish furniture, instinctively most of us think of mission or craftsman style furniture. While those styles appeal to many, they may not always appeal to everybody’s tastes, preferences, or existing décor. Most of our customers are very familiar with

the inherent quality that is built into every piece of handmade, Amish-crafted furniture. Many of our customers are pleasantly surprised to discover that our Amish craftsmen can produce nearly every style of furniture imaginable. You will find that the hand-crafted Amish furniture description has far less to do with a particular style than the unmatched quality you will find in every piece of furniture we hand craft and sell. So whether you’re purchasing dining room or bedroom furniture or furniture for just about any room in your home, just tell us what you want and our Amish craftsmen will custom build your piece in the style you choose and for far less than you might imagine. Damon Johnson I

F YOU’RE A FAN of Alice Cooper,

Thin Lizzy, or Black Star Riders, then you most definitely know who guitarist Damon Johnson is. His finesse on the axe has taken him around the world with these acts, who are household names in the music world. Damon recently released his latest five song EP entitled “Echo” (available on Amazon and iTunes) that was produced by the legendary Nick Raskulinecz. He recently chatted with me about “Echo” and shared what the motivation was behind the EP. “I would say that, truly, the greatest motivating force had to be my producer and my great friend, Nick Raskulinecz,” he said. “Nick and I both live in Nashville. I have been a fan of Nick’s for years. He’s produced so many great rock records. So when we met randomly at an Iron Maiden show a few years back, I was just knocked out to get to talk to this guy! “Nick produced the second Black Star Riders album, ‘The Killer Instinct.’ It was a great experience for the whole band, but it also gave Nick a chance to really get to know me and what I’m all about musically and as a rock writer and as a player. Not long after we finished that album, he called me out of the blue one day and said, ‘Hey, man, I’ve got some time. My studio is free if you want to come on in and record some of your own stuff. I’m sure you’ve got songs.’ – which I did and always do.” When I asked Damon which song he

56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2016

would use as a calling card for “Echo,” he said: “I guess that I would have to base that on some feedback I’ve gotten from the fans, my friends, and my inner circle. I think a lot of people are gravitating towards ‘Dead.’ ‘Dead,’ in some ways, could’ve been a really cool Alice Cooper song. Lyrically. Guitarwise. Kinda trashy. It’s got a real sexy tempo to it. I just think it’s exactly what you said. It just might be the statement song for the album. I have to mention ‘Nobody Using ’ as well. I’ve gotten a lot of great support in Europe. I’ve gotten some radio airplay. A lot of my Black Star Riders/Thin Lizzy supporters over there have gravitated towards that song.” The music world has been a-buzz with news that Damon’s former boss, Alice Cooper, was reuniting his original band members for a new album. I asked him what his thoughts were about that news. “That original band was incredibly special,” he said. “The further distance we get away from that, I think it becomes even more obvious how special they were. Alice has had dozens and dozens of different lineups as a solo artist through the years. But nothing can touch that original band. There was a special chemistry, and it was a special sound that had a special swagger that’s not been duplicated since then. Not necessarily that he wants to, but those guys played very, very unique together. You can bet that if they’re out there on some dates, I’m going to see one... or 10! Ha! Ha! If humanly possible, I’ll definitely be in the

house to see that!” Regarding what’s on his career radar for the foreseeable future, the renowned axe man said: “The plans for me, I’m hoping, are a mirror image of everything that has happened during the last 12 months. It’s really been the most fulfilling year I think I’ve ever had in my career. It’s an honor to be a part of Black Star Riders. It’s a real band. It’s truly growing its fan base at a time where it couldn’t be more difficult for guys our age just playing straight ahead rock to go out and build a following. We feel that momentum. We’re energized by it, so we’re going to absolutely be balls to the wall with continuing Black Star Riders. “Thin Lizzy is Scott’s band. Scott is my brother; my bandmate in Black Star Riders. Whenever he wants to do a handful of those, I’m certainly available. Again, what an incredible experience for me and Ricky to be a part of that Thin Lizzy band with Scott as well. The rest of the time I’ll be doing my stuff. I really would love to put out another acoustic album. My wife laughs. She goes, ‘You’re kind of like a southern version of Neil Young. You can put out these introspective, folk singer/ songwriter things and then fire up the amps with the band and be rockin’ in the free world.’ Ha! Ha! I told her that was an incredible compliment, so I’m certainly flattered by it.” You can read the full, extended interview with Damon Johnson at www.boomerocity. com.

Organizing Everyone for Back-to-School

E

VERYONE CAN BENEFIT from the

“back-to-school” mindset. The same principles for organizing the kids can bring order when used by the grownups, too. Clear Your Space and Head Review last year’s projects and edit what is no longer needed. Show the kids, and yourself, that it is not necessary to keep everything. Keeping only what is loved and needed makes room for the coming year. Give kids your permission to “say goodbye” to clutter, and help them practice good organizing habits. Dedicate Space Create a dedicated space for work and projects around the house. If the only place to study is the kitchen table, have a container handy where each child can store supplies. It will help keep clutter controlled. Be creative and make your workspace a pleasant place where you will enjoy working. Homework is easier when there is room to work. Splash of Color Don’t be afraid of using colors to help categorize projects. Using the same color for folders and binders for each class or subject will help keep things organized. If you have a large family, you can even color code the kids – or at least their backpacks or space in the garage for keeping up with extra-curricular activities. After School & the Garage When after-school activities begin, the house can quickly become crowded. Make it easier to head to activities by creating space in the garage for everyone’s needs. Whether it’s getting to ball practice or just having a place for the science project, storage is always welcomed. Getting organized ahead of time will prepare you and your kids for the upcoming bustling school year. For more storage and home organization tips, visit www.closetsbymckenry.com.

The 2016 Emory Place Block Party will have a more music centered focus with multiple acts performing at various venues around Emory Place. All of the acts are Knoxville locals, and the music is sure to please with a range including reggae, folk, indie-rock, jazz, and more. “Last year we had so many people say they didn’t know Emory Place existed before the block party,” said block party organizer, Whitney Manahan. “The area has seen a great amount of growth in the last year, so this year it’s less about discovering Emory Place and more about celebrating it as a special little place in the city.” The block party promises to be a fun-filled afternoon with activities and entertainment for the whole family! History

BY DON M. ALEXANDER, GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS HERITAGE CENTER

New Exhibits at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

Walker Sisters Quilt

The Walker Sisters

THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Heritage Center in Townsend has opened two new exhibits that will be of interest to anyone interested in the area’s history and culture, as well as those who want to discover lesser known treasures within an easy drive of Townsend. The Walker Sisters Quilts exhibit focuses on six quilts made by five unmarried sisters who refused to leave the homestead on which they were born, even as hundreds of other families were relocated after the formation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Their tenacity earned them a special lifetime lease to remain in the log cabin home in Little Greenbrier Cove that had been built by their father, John N. Walker, a Union veteran of the Civil War. The sisters – Margaret, Polly, Martha, Louisa, and Hettie – earned quite a reputation with visitors, to whom they sold handmade items such as children’s toys, crocheted doilies, fried apple pies, and even Louisa’s hand-written poems. They were featured in the Saturday Evening Post in April 1946, showcasing their self-sufficient mountain lifestyle to the rest of the country. By 1964, all the sisters remaining in the mountain home had died. The homestead is now maintained by Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The quilts exhibit, sponsored by Blount Partnership and the National Park Service, is a part of that lifestyle. This is the first time the quilts have been publicly displayed, as they have either been in storage or in the hands of the family. The quilts were made from materials on hand, including old shirts, dresses, bandanas, etc. The backings were of cotton, some produced from John Walker’s own cotton gin. They were hand-pieced and hand-quilted and intended to be used. The specific dates of construction are unknown but estimated to have been in the 1930s. 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2016

One of the quilts is an Irish chain pattern, one is a double Irish chain, and the remaining four are considered to be patchwork quilts, because they do not have a specific pattern. Two of the quilts have the makers’ initials. One, LSW, is by Louisa Susan Walker; the other, MJW, is for Margaret Jane Walker and may refer to either the sister or to their mother, who had the same name. The other five quilts are definitely known to have been made by the sisters, however. The National Parks Gallery exhibit curated by the National Parks celebrates the 100th anniversary of the National Parks system by focusing on the five national parks in the East Tennessee area. They are Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, Big South Fork National River & Recreation, Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Obed Wild and Scenic River. All five parks are within 78 miles of the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. Artifacts are on loan from each of the five parks and have a different focus. Those from the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site depict a timeline of Johnson’s life from early childhood through his profession as a tailor prior to serving as vice president under Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Johnson, a Greeneville, Tennessee, native, became the 17th president of the United States after Lincoln’s assassination in 1865. Big South Fork’s exhibit focuses on the coal mining history in the area while the Cumberland Gap display represents a timeline of the pioneers moving through the

Gap. The Obed exhibit explores its history of being a testing site for outdoor sports equipment such as kayaking and rock climbing. The Smokies exhibit is centered on rare, endangered, and new species of flora and fauna in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some of the most popular with visitors thus far are the rare Eastern spotted skunk, one of the two species of skunks in the park, and the hellbender, the largest aquatic salamander in the United States. Artifacts will be intermittently changed out to showcase additional objects. Heritage Center Director, Bob Patterson, said the goal of the National Parks Gallery exhibits is to increase visitation at the five National Parks in East Tennessee. “Most people don’t realize there are five national parks within 78 miles of Townsend,” he said. “We’re trying to help get the word out that all of these parks would make easy day trips and hopefully get people excited about exploring them.” Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is located at 123 Cromwell Drive in Townsend and is open 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 pm Sunday. For more information, visit www. gsmheritagecenter.org.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. Understanding the Emotional Components of Money EK: A reader asks, “Why is money such an emotional issue for people? Justin: If you’ve ever felt a rush of excitement when making a large purchase or experienced guilt when you’ve made a financial misstep, you understand that our relationship with money isn’t always rational. Money comes with a lot of emotional and psychological baggage that affects the decisions we make. Psychologists call these emotions “money scripts” and discovered that they can drive many of the positive and negative financial behaviors we experience. Many “money scripts” come from our family’s upbringing and the way our parents handled and discussed their finances.1 We encourage our clients to teach their kids good financial skills and responsibilities early in life. We should also explore and understand our own feelings about money and how it drives our behavior. Money is an emotional subject. We’ve observed many instances where emotions drive negative actions. » Emotional investing decisions can wreak havoc on long-term portfolio performance by leading to overconfidence when markets rally and panic when markets decline. » Anxiety about the unknown can leave people feeling paralyzed with worry and unable to make

financial decisions or prepare for the future. » Shame and avoidance can lead to inaction and push people into ignoring critical financial decisions that make them feel uncomfortable. » Emotional spending may offer people a brief feeling of euphoria or distraction but cripple their savings strategies if left unchecked. What Can You Do? Realize you’re in good company. Everyone has positive and negative emotions related to money that can lead them to make some notso-savvy decisions. If you have strong positive or negative reactions to questions about money, take note and explore them in more depth – perhaps with a professional. While some emotional triggers can lead to positive activities like saving and preparing for the future, others can cause negative behaviors like avoidance, overspending, and emotional investing. Another way to avoid allowing your emotions to derail your finances is by harnessing the power of psychology. » Build sound financial strategies to help neutralize your emotions during stressful periods. » Work with a professional to get the required guidance and positive reinforcement. » Automate your saving and investing through your workplace retirement plan in order to stay on track.

Dog Days of Summer!

“IT’S JUST TOO HOT to be outdoors!”

Dogs experience the same issues of dehydration, overheating, and even sunburn. At Ms. C’s, we take extra precautions during periods of hot weather, limiting guests to 12 minutes of outside activity each time they are outside. Summertime tips: » Make certain that your dogs are on heartworm, flea, and tick medications, as insects are very active during hot weather. » Cars can be deathtraps for dogs, even with the windows open. Never leave your dog alone in a car. Neither cloudy days nor shade reduces risks. Provide plenty of cool water. » Walk during the coolest time of the day. Dehydration can occur quickly. Short-nosed dogs are particularly susceptible. Also, be aware that hot pavement can burn your dog’s sensitive paw pads. » Outside dogs should have a cool, shady hideaway and plenty of clean, fresh water, or bring them indoors. » Automobile coolants and fluids leaking

» Take small steps toward better financial accountability with bi-weekly family budget meetings. » Forgive yourself when you make a mistake and get back on track as quickly as possible. How Can We Help? It’s our goal to help clients untangle their emotions about wealth and guide them in developing winning strategies for the future. We act as an impartial party when dealing with stressful situations and the powerful emotions you may experience regarding money. If you find it difficult to tackle your finances or experience financial stress and anxiety, please reach out to us to help.

from cars are especially dangerous to dogs. They are sweet tasting and can cause serious injury or death. If you think your animal may have ingested these or any other poisons, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 immediately. » Many insecticides contain ingredients (DEET in mosquito spray, for instance) that should never be used on your dog. » Taking your dog to the beach or lake is fine, but provide shade and plenty of clean, fresh water. Wash their paws after swimming. Summer is the favorite time of year at Ms. C’s. Being aware of heat and sun safety issues is foremost on the minds of our staff. New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on August 5

T

HE ARTS & CULTURE ALLIANCE presents five new

exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 5-26. A public reception will be August 5 from 5-9 pm. The public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. The First Friday reception also features Pasion Flamenca from 6-6:30 pm and a Jazz Jam with Vance Thompson’s Friends from 7-9 pm in the Black Box. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be available. Tuesday Painters: A Plein Air Show in the Downstairs Gallery En plein air is a phrase borrowed from the French equivalent meaning “open (in full) air.” Painting plein air is about observing and painting subjects from life outdoors. The Tuesday Painters are a group of artists who regularly paint outdoors in the beautiful foothills of East Tennessee. They gather Tuesday each week to paint, sketch, critique, share, and support one another while capturing the beauty of East Tennessee on canvas or paper, bringing the outdoors inside through their paintings. The group can be seen in locations along the Little River in Townsend, in the middle of fields in Cades Cove, in beautiful local gardens, and in Knoxville’s Old City.

Expressions by Terina Gillette in the Balcony Gallery “Expressions” is a combination of abstract expressions and Knoxville urban art scenes. Terina works in a variety of media such as window painting, chalk art murals, traditional wall murals, working with acrylics, papers, pencils, and face & body painting. Terina teaches art to local home education students at her private studio, as well as summer art camps at the Knoxville Museum of Art. She is a member of numerous associations nationwide and locally that promote and support arts and culture. Melinda Adams and Marjorie Holbert: The Wonder of Birds in the Display Case Melinda is an amateur photographer with a passion for wildlife, architecture, and landscape. She has received multiple awards from the Tennessee Valley Fair competitions. Her work has juried into Knoxville Photo and Arts in the Airport exhibitions, and she received a merit award for her work at the International Biscuit Festival. Marjorie began woodcarving six years ago by initially carving caricatures. Soon she found herself interested in carving birds. Marjorie has won multiple awards at the Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers annual show in Townsend each October. She will be a featured exhibitor at the Foothills Craft Guild’s annual show in November.

A Gathering of Goddesses by Sheryl Sallie on the North Wall “Goddesses exist everywhere women gather,” says Sheryl. This exhibition includes works that were inspired by a poem she wrote entitled “Where Have All the Goddesses Gone?” Sallie is a poet who has won several poetry contests, self-published a book of her poems, and competed in several poetry slams in the area. She began painting nine years ago and uses her poems as inspiration for some of her art. Her paintings have previously exhibited at the Fountain City Art Center. She prefers to work with mixed media, because it allows her to express her ideas through layering, collage, and image transfer. Glasslike Surfaces by Yvonne Hosey in the Atrium For the last two years, Yvonne has experimented with adapting traditional marbling techniques with glass paint on board. When her son started high school, they moved to a house with a sunny back porch, where she discovered a pack of old pastels, bought a few sheets of paper, and commandeered the porch. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Discover These Four Transformative Vacations

ITH THE BUSY TRAVEL SEASON upon us, people comb

through travel websites and brochures looking to find their ideal vacation destination. Some search for stunning examples of wilderness found only in America; others seek a cultural experience, a chance to taste new foods, visit historic sights, and see a different side of life. For those seeking to make their vacation fun, as well as educational and enriching, there are a host of photography workshops throughout the country that not only offer a chance to see amazing places, but instruction on memorializing their experiences through digital imaging and photography. Through Canon Live Learning Destination Workshops, amateur and professional photographers can travel to destinations around the country and learn from master photographers at the pinnacle of their craft. Participants choose from a number of destinations where they can experiment with different Canon cameras and lenses, get expert feedback on their images, and go home with prints that showcase their experience and new photography skills. To help inspire your next vacation, one that can be relaxing, fun, educational, and give you an eye-opening perspective on the world, here are some of the best places to discover, or rediscover, in America. The best place to experience the 62

mountains: The Rocky Mountains in Aspen, Colorado. Few things are as dramatic as the mountains, and few mountains are as iconic as the Colorado Rockies. In the heart of these mountains is the famous ski-town of Aspen, which has become a vibrant community filled with world-class dining and shopping. Just outside this small but cosmopolitan town are cowboys and cowgirls, rock climbers, and other devotees of the rugged life who have made their home in one of the most stunning and unforgettable landscapes of North America. The best place to view waterfalls: The Great Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Visitors who wake early to see the sun cut through the mist gathered in the valleys know why these are called “smoky” mountains. Known for its environmental diversity, the Great Smoky Mountains have an abundant amount of wildflowers, vistas, animals, and historic settlements. Tucked away in these mountains are some of the most scenic

waterfalls in the country. While not as famous as Niagara or Yosemite Falls, these wonders remain one of the best kept secrets in the United States. The best place for stargazing: Moab, Utah. People are often amazed by how bright the stars appear outside of the city. But to really get the full effect of the stars, you have to go far away from any human settlement, such as the desert of Utah. Here the Milky Way and its thick star clusters fire across the sky in a way that has to be seen to be believed. It’s a sight everyone needs to see once in their lives. The best place to be charmed: Tie between the New England Seaside and Savannah, Georgia. There’s no better way to take in a sense of America’s past than by visiting one of these ocean-side destinations. Savanah’s cobble-stone streets, city squares, and numerous Revolutionary and Civil War era sites create a vibrant picture of the Old South. Far to the north, the fishing villages of Massachusetts, with the lighthouses, ships, and, of course, chowder and clam bakes, offer a glimpse into a way of life that was once common throughout America. The inevitable downside of any great vacation is that it always seems too short. With the right camera skills, you can take amazing pictures that are good enough to print, share with others, or hang on your wall. These physical prints are not only memories. As works of art you created, they are a truly meaningful way to preserve your experience.

Managing Your Money While Away at College

today don’t have a lot of extra money and have to make it stretch to pay for school but still have some recreation. You still want to John Fawaz enjoy spring break. You still CERTIFIED FINANCIAL want to date. You still want to PLANNER™ go out with your friends from time to time. But it can be a challenge. So how do you balance your responsibilities with your social life? Here are some helpful suggestions: » First, establish a budget: Set up a budget before you leave for college and review it when you arrive. Most students have smartphones or iPads, and there are lots of free apps you can download that make it easy to track all your expenses, including apps like Mint.com. They will tell you how much you’ve spent on food, entertainment, etc. so you can adjust your spending accordingly. » Set up a joint bank account: You should consider opening a joint checking account with your son or daughter. I have some friends and clients that have done this. You can help them manage the account in the beginning and encourage them to use debit cards. At the end of each month, help them reconcile their bank statements. Consider rewarding good behavior by giving them additional money, and offer suggestions on how to improve their performance should they miss their goals. » Consider avoiding credit cards: Credit card companies market heavily to students. Avoid them if your student lacks the necessary discipline, as they can get you into a lot of trouble. If you decide to use a credit card, select one with a limit of, say, $500 to $1,000. Select a credit card with airline miles or one that pays you 1-3% cash back on every purchase. » Student loans: Exercise caution with student loans. Many students going to college are “undecided” about their future. They often mistakenly use these loans to supplement their lifestyle while away at school. Remind your student that every penny borrowed, plus interest, will have to be paid back. Because student loans will not be forgiven in a bankruptcy, they will follow you around forever. Educator Profile

John Bartlett HE MAY HAVE BEEN

named the 2016 State Principal of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals, but John Bartlett doesn’t take credit alone. “This award is a school award,” said John, who is principal of Bearden High School. “There are more capable and more competent principals throughout the county and state; however, the faculty, staff, students, and parents at Bearden High School make Bearden a fantastic place to learn and work.” John will be starting his ninth year at Bearden High this fall. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Tennessee Temple University, an MA and an EdS in instructional leadership from Tennessee Tech, and an EdD in educational leadership from Liberty University. “Right after high school I enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserves,” said John. “After my initial active duty training, I entered college as a computer engineering major, planning to make plenty of money and to create the new generation of computing. From that point on, I realized I would be out of place doing anything but working with young people.” John’s day-to-day work is extremely busy and often unpredictable. “Being a principal means that you put out fires all day long,” he said. “Often you start the day with a to-do list and do not get a single thing accomplished you plan on accomplishing. I seek to spend 60% of my day in the classrooms observing students and teachers. I value teaching and learning above everything that happens at Bearden High School and seek to monitor that allimportant mission every day.” John says the relationships he builds with teachers and students are the most enjoyable parts of his job. “I lead through building relationships, valuing others, seeking to grow leaders and

Like many educators, it’s a challenge for John to accomplish everything he needs to do in a given day. He’s quick to credit the staff at Bearden for making the school a great place for students to learn. “Lack of time is the biggest challenge I constantly face,” he said. “There is never enough time to build relationships, monitor learning, work with teachers and staff, respond to emails, phone calls, etc. But you will never find a successful principal without a great staff, and Bearden High School has the best staff in America.” John will now be considered for the 2017 National Principal of the Year award, along with his fellow state principals of the year from across the country.

Here’s Where We Drop the Ball

T

HE TRUTH is that if most small

business owners were as adept at planning for their retirements as they are at managing the day-to-day activities of their businesses, they would have a lock on their futures. So why do so many entrepreneurs put off planning for retirement? Well, for starters, we’re busy, not to mention that retirement is a long way off for many of us. That’s what you think. I’m 66 years old, and the span of time from age 35 to today was a little more than the blink of an eye. You simply will not believe how time accelerates as you age. And the longer you postpone planning for your retirement, the greater the risks are that your dreams for the future may not live up to your expectations. The bottom line is that the sooner you start planning, the more secure your retirement will likely be. Time is of the essence in planning for your future, and you may be well advised to seek the advice of a qualified financial planner in your efforts, as there are far more moving parts to

In addition, there are numerous uncertainties as well. Will you be able to count on the availability of Social Security? Will Medicare become unaffordable? Will you outlive your retirement savings? Will you require expensive in-home care as you age? I would not recommend going it alone when

planning for your retirement. A qualified planner – and here’s where it gets sticky – who puts your goals ahead of theirs is worth their weight in gold. But start today. The earlier you start planning, the higher the investment risk tolerance you can accept. And if things don’t go exactly as you planned, you will likely still have ample time to recover. Taking these same risks later in life can have unintended negative consequences that you may never be able to fully recover from. But won’t the sale of my business at retirement be enough to ensure a secure future? Perhaps, if you want to put all your eggs into that one basket.

Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic! FLASH BACK!

If you remember that phrase, you’re not a spring chicken. It used to summarize the return of school and the fundamental subjects. To say that “over the years, things have changed rapidly” is too simplistic. Perhaps to say “nothing is the same as just 10 short years ago” is more realistic. Now that it’s August, one thing is certain: We’re all going back to school! While most adults won’t schedule college classes, the importance of continuing our education couldn’t be more crucial. Otherwise our competitive world will leave us behind, and it’ll never look back. Don’t fall into that trap. Recently, during an interview with a business coach who mentors mostly young entrepreneurs, my back-to-school mentality went into full reality check mode. Suddenly I found myself in a temporary panic. He was speaking about the latest speakers on the subject of business, the top selling books, and people who were trending on podcasts. As a professional mentor, he was up to speed

on who’s doing what successfully and why. Mentioning a particular top selling book, he asked me if I liked the way the author suggested the best practices for raising large sums of money. Yikes! I’d not even heard of the book or author, much less read it. Who doesn’t need to know best practices for raising capital? If we’re to be successful, we must be students of current trends. We may not use everything we learn, but we can learn innovative techniques that improve the way we run our businesses. » Read: Always know the top 10 books for business trends, then pick one or two and read them. While their business may be different, we can learn from what others have put years into practicing. » Listen: Podcasts are another great tool. While riding the in car you can listen to your favorite speakers. It’s an easy way to hear exciting ideas from people you trust. » Stretch: Being in business means being busy. Daily tasks determine schedule restraints, and often we do just what needs

to be done with little thought of continuing our education on a practical level. We must be willing to stretch our thinking beyond the day-to-day. Seek ways to keep current in your field. Don’t just get by; get ahead. One simple way to stretch our thinking is to find mentors; people who ask tough questions, others who share crazy ideas, creative thinkers who come up with new products and services. We need to be around people who think differently than we do. My moment of panic was a reality check. I’d been lost in the daily grind. That can be deadly if we lose sight of what’s trending in the wonderful world of business. Reading, writing, and arithmetic? That was then, this is now. Now’s the time to go back to school. It’s not just for kids. It’s for us, too! Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Follow her blog at http://bethtownsend.wordpress.com.

Family Life

BY W E N DY FAU LK N E R

Are You Mothering Your Partner?

WOMEN WHO HAVE

had children know all about the mothering instinct. The mothering instinct is strong, and it is astounding at all the new mental and physical powers gained when a female becomes a mom. Mothers can foretell the future, give advice and warnings, sense danger, and even have unbelievable emotional and physical strength if a child needs help. Mothers seem to possess psychic powers that give them the ability to read minds and to perceive things others may not. They can also sense if a child is up to mischief, telling a lie, or if they are sad and simply need a hug. The mothering instinct is powerful. As such, it is easy for a mother to fall into the habit of “mothering” their partner, which is a big no-no. How does this happen? It goes back to the mothering instinct. When females become moms, the instinct to care,

love, and nurture is powerful. In addition to loving and caring for their own children, they know how to mother a lost cat or dog, an injured bird, a child’s friend, and even a stranger they happen to meet who needs a kind word or a helping hand. If you have found that your relationship with your partner has shifted and you feel more like his mother instead of his friend, lover, and partner, you probably have made him a target of your mothering instinct. Monitor yourself and see what you are doing to mother him. When you discover the behaviors, change them and interact with your husband as his wife instead of as his mother. It is important that females recognize as early as possible is they are mothering their spouses so they can stop it. Taking on the responsibility of becoming mommy to a man will leave a woman with no soft place to fall,

a nd re se ntment can build quickly in the marriage. It is perfectly fine and natural to care for and love the men in our lives. The key is making sure the man in your life doesn’t get subconsciously lumped into the “children” category. If you discover that your relationship with your partner is no longer romantic and equal and it has morphed into a mother/child relationship, take stock of what is going on and fix it. We Just Need to Be Kinder I WANT TO TALK ABOUT a simple

topic, but one I think we struggle with at times, especially inside the walls of our own homes. It’s kindness. If I were to ask your spouse, companion, or kids if you were kind, what would they say? I think we would all admit that oftentimes, it’s easier to be more kind to total strangers than to those we live with, but just because it might be easier doesn’t mean that it’s ok. We have to put forth every effort to just be kind. How do we do this? Here are some great suggestions, but as you might imagine, there are endless opportunities. » Speak softly. The more gentle and kind your tone of voice, the more likely those around you will listen. » Say “good morning” when you wake up and “hello” when you get home. Remember that greetings are a polite way to address anyone when you first see them that day or after an absence. » Serve. Small acts of unexpected service goes a long way in showing your love to others, especially your family. Take a piece of cake 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2016

home to your spouse, give your son a back rub, ask your daughter if you could help her do her nails – anything to show others you’re thinking of them and enjoy making them happy. » Say “thank you” all the time. “Thank you for doing the dishes.” “Thank you for watching what I wanted to watch.” “Thank you for always being there.” » Compliment more than complain. Compliments go much further in creating love in a home rather than complaining. I know it can be frustrating when you feel things aren’t being done like they need to be done, or assignments or obligations are forgotten about, but complaining usually doesn’t motivate people to act. Most of us are inspired when our hearts are turned to someone in a positive way. We want to please them. We want to receive their praise. » Smile. Let’s be honest, how much fun is it to be around someone who’s always frowning? It’s not. Just smile. I’m not saying you have to show all your teeth all day every day, but there’s a way to have a pleasant look on your face, and there’s a way to have a scowl

on your face. Choose the smile. » Do it because you want to, not so you can get something in return. If you’re choosing to serve, to help, to compliment, etc. in order to get something in return, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. Just do it because doing so makes you happy. If no one notices, if no one says thank you, just be happy because you’re living and loving the way you should, and there’s nothing that can satisfy you as much as being happy with yourself. Have a great month, and remember to be kind!

Southeastern Dermatology Offers Cellulite Solution Cellfina™ I

Matthew B. Doppelt, D.O., F.A.O.C.D., F.A.A.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

T IS ESTIMATED that 85% of adult women have the lumps

and bumps of cellulite dimpling the skin on their buttocks and thighs. For many women, cellulite comes with a host of problems often related to issues with body image and feelings of anxiety related to the appearance of their skin. Though doctors aren’t sure why some women have more struggles with cellulite than others, we do know that the condition is almost always related to genetics and hormones. Even women who are fit and slim can suffer from embarrassment and feeling self-conscious of cellulite. Throughout the years, there have been a myriad of “miracle” creams marketed for the treatment of cellulite. None of these have been proven to produce lasting results, and most of these don’t produce significant results. Several cellulite reduction devices have also been brought to market. Some of these may provide some short-term benefit but require multiple treatment sessions, can be painful, and have the potential to damage the skin. Fortunately, a new minimally invasive treatment, called Cellfina, offers true hope for cellulite sufferers. Cellfina was approved by the FDA in 2014 and has since proven to be a reliable, long lasting solution to the lumps and bumps with which many women cope. After seeing amazing results from other practitioners during the past two years, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Matthew Doppelt, of Southeastern Dermatology is proud to be the first to offer this exciting treatment to patients in East Tennessee. “Patients frequently ask me if there is anything that really works for cellulite,” said Dr. Doppelt. “I now enthusiastically say yes – Cellfina!” To understand how Cellfina works, patients must understand the architecture of the skin and the fat underneath. The dimpled appearance of cellulite is caused by fibrous bands called “septae” under the skin pulling down and creating a lumpy appearance. Cellfina works by releasing these bands, leading to a smooth surface. Cellfina is effective because it tackles cellulite’s underlying cause and produces a smooth, consistent result. Cellfina is a one-time, in-office procedure that takes about an hour to complete. During the process, patients will receive local anesthesia in the treatment area, then Dr. Doppelt will use a small, needle-like device to release the septae. Cellfina is indicated for the treatment of dimpled cellulite on the buttocks, the outer thighs, and the back of thighs. Results are visible within a few days of treatment. In the pivotal study submitted to the FDA, patient satisfaction was 85% at three months, 94% at one year, and 96% at two years. These patient satisfaction rates far surpass other leading cellulite treatments. Additionally, at this time, the respected patient revue website, www.realself.com, reports a 93% “worth it” rating during the past two years. The results of Cellfina last at least two years, which is the longest cellulite clearance approved by The FDA. Three year clearance data has just been presented that demonstrates continued improvement.

There have been no major side effects associated with Cellfina. Minor tenderness and bruising, which typically resolves in two to four weeks, are the most common side effects. Cellfina finally offers a long-term solution to cellulite. For additional information about the treatment, visit www.cellfina.com.
