S A CHILD, I always looked

forward to August and our annual family vacation. My parents would rent a cottage on the lake in northern Wisconsin, and we all would have the time of our lives swimming, boating, fishing, and making new friends. I never wanted to see August end, as that meant the end of our vacation for a year and the Photo by D. Roberts Photography start of a new school season. In this edition, I wanted to share a Wisconsin travel destination that was always a favorite of mine. Door County in Wisconsin offers some beautiful scenery and many enjoyable activities that will make some family memories to be looked back on for years to come. This destination may become one of your favorite vacation spots, too. August in East Tennessee can be very hot and steamy, but it also brings transitional weather with a hint of fall, which is pleasant for outdoor activities and home projects that are remaining to be completed before much cooler weather arrives. ANY SUCCESS STORIES begin with the steadfast encouragement of a mentor that oftentimes sees something in us that we are unable to see and believes in us more than we believe in ourselves. Such was the case with James Gott – entrepreneur and, most importantly, devoted father. Fortunately, James lived to see Pamela become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s degree in nursing, in addition to becoming a BoardCertified Family Nurse Practitioner. It was in her father’s memory that she launched both Gott Family Medical Clinic and The Face Place™ in 2014. EK: Pamela, describe for our readers just how important it was for you to have a mentor – in this instance, your father – at such an early point in your life. Pamela: My father was an entrepreneur and an inspirational business leader. His encouragement was paramount in launching two innovative medical practices: The Face Place™ and Gott Family Medical Clinic. I truly owe my strong work ethic and passion for excellence to his emphasis on quality and integrity. EK: Tell us a little bit about your formal medical education and training. Pamela: My formal education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a Master’s degree in Nursing – Advanced Practice Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice, and Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I also have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration and an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene. Additional training and internships include facial aesthetics injector’s training, skincare training, and internships at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals. Most recently I participated in extensive training to study the latest and most advanced CoolSculpting® techniques. Dolly’s Dollywood Reminds Visitors to Dream Big

Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame It’s only fitting that the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame make its home at Dollywood. The granddaughter of a Pentecostal preacher, Dolly first sang in church. In 2010, Dolly received the Southern Gospel Music Association’s James D. Vaughan Impact Award. Gospel music has and always will hold a very special place in

her heart. And, the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame has a very special place in her theme park, too. Located on Showstreet, near Dollywood’s entrance, the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame tells the story of a timeless genre of music, passed down from one generation to the next and steeped in the traditions of Sunday worship and all-night gospel singings. Southern gospel music traces its roots back more than 100 years, when hymns rang from the many tiny churches that dotted the landscape of the Southeastern United States. Soon groups – often families – decided to share God’s word through gospel music. By doing so, the Southern gospel music industry was born. And, oh, how it has grown. On April 17, 1999, Dollywood welcomed the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The 4,000-square-foot facility serves not only as the industry’s headquarters, but also as a tribute to all who contributed to Southern gospel music’s success. More than 350 artifacts are displayed, representing more than 100 groups and individuals. The Hall of Fame pays tribute to 80 members, with new honorees inducted annually. The Vaughan Radio Quartet, the Stamps All-Star Quartet, the Speer Family, the LeFeveres, the Blackwood Brothers, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Rangers, the Sunshine Boys, the Happy Goodmans, the Statesmen, the Harmoneers, the Florida Boys, the Oak Ridge Quartet, the Weatherfords, and the Rebels all laid a firm foundation for those who would follow. Today such groups as the Gaither Vocal Band, the Martins, the Isaacs, and the McKameys still travel across the country and around the world sharing their musical ministries.

Fall 50k and 25k Trail Races on the Beautiful Trails of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness

is hosting its inaugural event, Ultra Trail Knoxville, at Ijams Nature Center on Sunday, October 15. Runners can sign up until October 11 for 50k or 25k trail running races within Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. Ultra Trail Knoxville will be the first ultra trail race within the city limits of Knoxville. The unique area provides a fast trail with rolling and flat terrain along downtown’s south waterfront that is sure to be breathtaking at this beautiful time of year for Knoxville. “I am a professional ultra runner myself, and I wanted to return to my hometown to further the efforts of Knoxville’s urban wilderness and provide an opportunity to race an ultra trail right in Knoxville,” said Janessa Taylor, one of the race directors. The schedule of events includes packet pick-up at the Runners Market in Knoxville

on Friday, October 13, from 3 to 6 pm and the ultra run on Sunday, October 15. The 50k and 25k will start at 8 am at Ijams Nature Center. Registration is up and running with fees of $75 for the 50k until August 31 and $85 between September 1 and October 11. For the 25k race, the fees are $40 until August 31 and $50 between September 1 and October 11. All are welcome to Ijams Nature Center after the race for food, raffle prizes, awards, and fun! a convenient excuse used by far too many seniors today who have learned to accept diminished health and well-being, but at 76 years young, Emily Vreeland is proving them all wrong. This surprising grandmother of two has led an enthusiastic hiking group of more than 70 members from her church, the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, for the last four years. Twice a month Emily and her dedicated followers traverse the rolling topography of East Tennessee. In fact, Emily has hiked more than 500 miles of trails throughout our Great Smoky Mountains, inspiring other seniors seeking a more active and healthy lifestyle to follow her. But Emily’s real success began 10 years ago when she described herself as feeling “fat, frumpy, and old.” Emily decided that she wanted to be an active grandmother for her two grandsons. When Emily asked me if I thought she could lose 30 pounds, I told her that it was entirely up to her and that Fitness Together would team up with her to customize a plan designed to help her achieve her personal goals. As a result of her efforts, Emily has achieved her goals and has managed to maintain a healthy weight, all while building muscle and improving her health. “Most people don’t think I act or look anywhere near as old as I am,” said Emily. “I also give credit to my genetics.” She was understandably hesitant at first, but as she started feeling stronger, she became more motivated to continue to pursue her goals. “Instead of just driving through the Smokies, I started getting out of the car and walking on some of the trails,” she said. Spending the afternoon poolside? Keep an assortment of floats and inflatable tubes so guests can relax or play in the water. Stock a mini-fridge with cool beverages, and tuck small bags of grapes in the freezer section for a cooling snack. Hint: Grapes also make great ice cubes that won’t dilute a drink!

Put together an Italian-inspired antipasto platter in minutes – arrange clusters of fresh grapes next to olives, marinated artichoke hearts, cubes of provolone cheese, and roasted red peppers on a large plate. Serve with crusty Italian bread. 4. Liven up any picnic with a cooler filled with easy-to-eat red, green, and black California grapes that have been cut into small clusters ahead of time. Add some assorted cheeses, crackers, fresh veggies, and Mediterranean dips, and let the party begin. 5. Say olé to cool summer libations at celebrations. Start the party with an unexpected and unique drink, the frosty Grape Mojito, shown at right. Red grapes add natural sweetness and a pop of color. 6. Set up a grilled fruit buffet for a fun snack or dessert. Thread fresh grapes, pineapple chunks, and peach cubes on skewers. Brush lightly with oil and grill until the fruits begin to caramelize, which deepens and enhances flavor. Serve with a choice of sorbets.

Grape Mojito Ingredients: » 3 wedges lime » 12 mint leaves » 6 large red California grapes, halved, plus more for garnish » 2 teaspoons sugar » 2 oz. white rum » Ice » Club soda Directions: In a cocktail glass, muddle together two of the lime wedges, mint leaves, grape halves, sugar, and rum until the sugar dissolves. Fill the glass with ice, and top off with club soda. Top with the reserved lime wedge and more grapes. Ingredients: » 1/3 cup grapeseed oil » 6 large cloves garlic, very thinly sliced » 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts » 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided » 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided » 1/4 cup lemon juice » 1 tablespoon rice vinegar » 2 teaspoons honey » Pinch cayenne » 3 cups chopped romaine lettuce » 2 cups chopped radicchio » 2 cups chopped green cabbage » 2 cups halved California grapes » 1 cup thinly sliced celery » 1/4 cup roughly chopped mint

Sprinkle the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Transfer 2 tablespoons of the garlic oil back to the skillet. Heat over medium-high until almost smoking, and add the chicken. Cook until golden on the bottom, about 7-9 minutes. Turn and cook another 7-9 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Remove to a cutting board. Let stand 5 minutes. Whisk the lemon juice, vinegar, and honey into the remaining garlic oil. Season with 1/4 teaspoon each kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, and cayenne. Combine romaine, radicchio, cabbage, grapes, celery, and mint in a large bowl. Chop the chicken and add to the bowl along with the dressing. Toss to mix and serve sprinkled with the crispy garlic.

Directions: Heat the oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add the garlic and cook until browned and crisp, removing pieces as they brown with a slotted spoon, about 2 minutes altogether. Pour the oil into a heatproof cup.

Presented by the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and Ijams Nature Center, visitors have the opportunity to see ruby-throated hummingbirds up close at a banding demonstration by Mark Armstrong, a certified Master Bander. Banding demonstrations will take place between 8 and 11:30 am. Hummingbirds are harmlessly captured,

weighed, measured, and banded before being sent on their way. Banding provides a way to document hummingbird movement during migration. August and September are busy migration months in Tennessee with thousands of hummingbirds moving south on their way to wintering grounds in Central America and Southern Mexico. new direction in one’s life is not always easy, but that is exactly what local artist Judy Sinclair accomplished seven years ago. Believing that perhaps she was always meant to become an artist, Judy chose instead to ignore her innermost feelings. But thanks in large part to the encouragement from her husband and her faith in God, Judy finally listened to her inner voice and made what she now believes was the best decision of her life. Fortunate to have traveled extensively throughout the world while her husband served in the U.S. Air Force, Judy relies on her experiences as her inspiration to create colorful mixed media paintings. Judy has taken numerous art courses at the college level and has studied under a variety of gifted artists, all of which have helped develop her own unique style. In love with the very colors that make her happy, it is her hope that her creations will bring that same joy to those people who view her works. Judy prefers to work with acrylic paints, which she enhances with handmade paper, stained glass pieces, semi-precious stones, handmade yarn, and a variety of other natural elements designed to provide both added texture and depth to her paintings. Many readers may be familiar with her title “Bear Territory,” which was chosen as the official print for the 2015 Dogwood Arts Festival and was reproduced into posters for that event. Today you can view many of Judy’s paintings at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. Her pieces are also available for sale, along with the art of other local and regional artists. Butterfly Dash and Bash

August 12 at World’s Fair Park

ORMALLY THE Butterfly Fund 5K, the Butterfly Dash and Bash is an exciting new event created between the Butterfly Fund family and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. This new event begins and ends at World’s Fair Park and incorporates a new route that includes the Ft. Sanders neighborhood and runs by cheering patients at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital before returning to World’s Fair Park along Grand Avenue. 10K participants will continue from World’s Fair Park Drive and run along 11th Street until reconnecting with the original 5K loop and concluding at World’s Fair Park. Start times for the 5K and 10K will be

staggered to minimize congestion at the start line and along the course. The 10K race will begin at 8:15 am, and the 5K race will begin at 9:00 am. The fun walk will take place following the 5K start. Many Retirees are Still Eligible for Social Security Maximization Strategies

N 2 0 1 6 , the rules were changed for

married couples intending to use a Social Security claiming strategy to maximize their benefits. While the most advantageous “file and suspend” strategy was phased out, there is still an opportunity to maximize Social Security benefits. If you were age 62 by January 2, 2016, Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA you are in the last group that will be allowed to claim a restricted application for spousal benefits only. I’m finding that many people are unaware of this opportunity and are inadvertently leaving money on the table, so let me explain with an example. Let’s say you and your spouse are approaching age 66 (your full retirement age) and thinking of retiring. Neither of you have yet claimed your Social Security benefits. You still have the ability for the higher-earning spouse to begin taking SS benefits, while the other spouse takes a spousal benefit only – letting his/her own benefit continue to grow at 8% per year until he/she is age 70 and then switching to that higher monthly amount. Of course this is just one example of a claiming strategy. There are many different maximization scenarios. Be aware that this rule change applies to ex-spousal benefits as well, while widow’s strategies were left unchanged. To recap the requirements: » You had to be at least 62 years old by January 2, 2016. » Your spouse needs to be claiming their SS benefits. » You need to be at your full retirement age (generally 66) before you begin. This benefit is terminating as of January 1, 2020, so if you are in this last grandfathered group, don’t miss this opportunity! It’s more important than ever. If it sounds confusing to you, please let me help you understand which claiming strategies are still available to you and your spouse. We use specialized software to sort through multiple strategies to find the right one for you. Just provide us with a recent Social Security earnings statement, and we’ll prepare an analysis for $59. One of the best ways to spend wisely is to create a budget. If you don’t already have one, open a new spreadsheet on your computer or get out a pen and paper. Consider all the potential back-to-school expenses and not just the obvious ones, such as school supplies and clothing. For example, you’ll want to factor in extracurricular or after-school activities, tutoring, special school trips, and even lunch costs.

2. Collaborate with other parents.

Consider joining parent groups, either through your school or community. These groups can offer a great support network to share ideas and information. They also serve as a fantastic resource for meeting parents who have items such as sports equipment their kids have outgrown or even musical instruments their children no longer play. This can lead to some serious money-saving deals.

4. Make a shopping list.

Most schools provide a back-to-school list to help you plan and shop for your child. Use this as a starting point to make your own list and then stick to it! Retailers are set up to encourage impulse buys, but checking to see if something is or is not on your list is one of the most effective ways to avoid purchasing non-essential items and blowing your budget.

5. Embrace the three Rs.

Your kids will probably learn about the three Rs in school: Reduce, reuse, recycle. This is a great principle to keep in mind when getting them ready for school, especially for back-to-school clothes. Choosing quality basics such as a jacket, skirt, sweater, or jeans that can be combined with other clothing in your child’s closet will reduce the need for quantity purchases. In addition, consignment stores and online retailers are very popular and offer gently used items that check the “reuse” box. And finally, don’t forget to take advantage of hand-me-downs, whether from older siblings or friends. Going back to school should be an exciting time for you and your kids. Knoxville Writers’ Guild 2017 Spelling Bee Intergenerational Spelling Bee promises challenge, community, and fun

the Knoxville Writers’ Guild (KWG) first Spelling Bee, the KWG is happy to announce plans for a second bee, with even more intergenerational and challenging fun. The second annual Adult Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday, September 7, at 7:00 pm. The competition will be open to ages 15 and up, providing a great opportunity for high school age youth to compete with teachers, parents, and community adults. Words will be drawn from vocabulary used in great literature, as well as from other nontechnical sources. The Bee will be held at Central United Methodist Church, located at 201 East Third Avenue. The building is

accessible, and free parking is available. Major funding has already been received from the Pilot Flying J Corporation and Testprep Experts. Additional funding will be sought, as well as door prizes for spellers and supporters. Competitors will be limited to the first 40 registrations. The entry fee is $10. F YOU LISTENED to the radio at

all in the early ’80s, there’s no doubt you heard two songs that seemed to dominate the airwaves: The Breakup Song and Jeopardy, both by The Greg Kihn Band. Since those award-winning days, Kihn has been quite the renaissance man, continuing to record albums, as well as DJing in the San Francisco area and writing novels. It was that first activity that Kihn recently contacted me. We chatted about his new CD, ReKihndled. He called from his California home, and we started with him updating me on what he’s been up to the last few years. Answering my question to verify that ReKihndled was his 17th album, Kihn said, “Yeah. I’m proud of this one because, number one, it’s got my son on it – Ry Kihn. And I think, materially, it’s a lot better than the other albums. You get these song ideas and, if you’re not in songwriting mode, a lot of them just get pushed off to the back burner. At the end of a year, I had a ton of really good album ideas. Writing the songs was actually the easy part.” Why the title ReKihndled? “I hope it ‘rekindles’ my career!” said Kihn. “How’s that? I figured when we started making these ‘Kihn’ puns, it was early in the game. We named the first album – it was just Greg Kihn. And then we got the second album, and they said, ‘What do you want to call it?’ and some wisenheimer said, ‘Let’s do it Greg Kihn Again.’ Okay. So now we have two albums. Then the next album comes out. ‘What do you want to name it?’ ‘How about Next of Kihn?’ It just started, and it never stopped. Kihnsolidation, Kihnspiracy. There are dozens." Which song would be the CD’s calling card? “Oh, that’s a great question!” he said. “I would say my favorite is Big Pink Flamingos. But if you wanted the best song that really reflected what the album was all about, I would say – you know, that’s a good question. It’s thought provoking, but there’s the first song on there called The Life I Got, which is very autobiographical. I say that would be the album cut that I would think would most represent us. The Life I Got. That’s cut one. Side one.”

Then, out of the blue, Kihn said, “You know, it’s a good life being a musician. I’ve been real lucky in my life. I feel like it’s been a long, successful career, and I just feel like I was blessed. When I was a little kid, my mom used to say, ‘Well, if you can get a job being a musician, you’re blessed!’ Low and behold, I did it! I don’t know how I did it. I just did it. “Like I said before – I say this all the time. I probably sound like a broken record, but I’m blessed! I really am! I had a wonderful career and have written a whole bunch of songs. It was never hard for me. They say that someday you’re going to run out of ideas. It hasn’t happened to me. The last 40 years it hasn’t happened to me, so I feel like I’m really lucky and just having that gig where ‘what do you do in life?’ ‘Well, I play music.’ That’s pretty good, man.” Wrapping up our chat, I asked Kihn what I ask other artists of his tenure and stature: When you step off the tour bus called life many years from now, how do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy will be? “You know, that’s a really good question, because nowadays – this was never the thing before – but nowadays I have grandchildren, and I’m really thinking about grandpa’s legacy. I come over to their house for dinner, and my son, Ry, and I go down there and they always say, ‘Get out the guitars! Get out the guitars!’ Now they want to play the guitar. They want to sing songs. They’re five and eight years old. But it really makes me think about my legacy. When those guys are teenagers, hopefully I’ll still be around and they’re still gonna want to be playing my songs. One of my dreams is that – I’ve got my son in the band – wouldn’t it be great to have my grandkids in the band and have three generations of Kihn up there on stage? That would blow my mind!”

Y FIRST INTROD U C T I O N to the

Tennessee Dancing Gourd was a few years back at the Williamson County Fair, when a Master Gardener submitted a tiny green and white cutie for judging in the fruit and vegetable competition. With just one glance I knew I was in for trouble. I had to have it if only to satisfy my infatuation with heirloom plants. When thinking of the gourd plant, we immediately envision the typical bottle-type variety most recognizable in its birdhouse form. There are many others, however, that tend to be overlooked, if only because they’re not commercially available by seed or hard to find. This would be the case with the Tennessee Dancing Gourd (TDG). TDG (Cucurbita pepo var. ovifera), also known as the Tennessee Spinner, is an heirloom variety and a member of the cucurbit family. It’s grown annually from seed. At one time, seeds became almost impossible to find, leaving many a gourd enthusiast to believe this gem may have disappeared for good. There’s very little known about the TDG other than it originated from a Mr. Gordon of Primm Springs in Hickman County, Tennessee, and its popularity was high with children. These tiny treasures provided hours of entertainment, as they can be spun just like a top. It’s said that many a playground would be littered with these tiny treats after lunch, because kids would carry them in their pockets to play with at school. Cultivation tips for TDG are similar to others in the family. Plant in warm soil, whether

starting with seed or seedling. Provide plenty of nutrients throughout the season. Cucurbits are heavy feeders and benefit with a side dressing when the plants begin to bloom and fruit. Just like its brothers, sisters, and cousins, TDG is a vining plant that loves a good sprawl and can grow upwards of eight feet in length, while the gourd itself only reaches one to three inches at maturity. The prolifically productive vines can be left to trail the ground or, like those at my house, grown upright in a large pot with a support trellis. Gourds like water as do other cucurbits but not too much. Water TDG deeply once a week, applying at least one inch of water. If growing in a raised bed or container system, increase frequency, as the roots and surrounding soil will dry faster because they are exposed to the elements when above ground. A little wilt in scorching, mid-afternoon sun is normal, and they’ll recover once the sun sets. The extreme heat, humidity, and periods of drought experienced in Tennessee can stress these plants, reducing production. Mulch can help keep the soil around the roots moist, regulate soil temperature, and keep the plants healthy. Common pests include cucumber beetles, vine borers, and squash bugs. Trap crops of nasturtium or dill, as an herb companion can be beneficial in deterring these flying plagues. Proactive applications of pyrethrum can also significantly reduce pest populations. To decrease incidence, use disease-resistant varieties, don’t overhead water, prune and

destroy any damaged plant tissue, and rotate annually. To ensure pollination and fruit set, use a small paintbrush or similar device to transfer pollen from the male to the female flower. The female is very easy to recognize in that a tiny fruit will be visible on the backside of the flower. This technique can be especially beneficial early in the season when pollination may be questionable. TDGs are best if harvested around 95 days after planting and should be dried in a cool location. Poking a small hole in the bottom of the gourd is recommended to prevent mold or mildew of the seeds inside. After the hard shell fully dries to a light tan and the seeds rattle inside when shaken, you’re ready to spin them. These little guys also make great decorated ornaments, and because they’re an heirloom, the seeds may be saved for years to come. Once thought to be on its way out, the Tennessee Dancing Gourd is no wallflower… and if you let her, she’ll spin her way into your heart just as she did mine. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. ELCOME TO the “dog days” of summer. I’m not even going to pretend that I’m going to be outside doing a lot of yardwork when it is 98 degrees with 1,000% humidity, and I know that you aren’t likely to be out there either. Nevertheless, there are some things that will need to be done either early in the morning before it gets scorching hot or late in the afternoon when the sun is less intense. » Keep an eye on things so you don’t have unpleasant surprises when you do a fall checkup. Walk around the perimeter of your yard and through your flower beds. Look up for broken branches or dead areas in trees. Look down for fungal problems in your lawn and vole holes. Look all around for signs of disease and insects on your plants. » We are an absolute fungal soup this year, which is doubly bad because our trees and shrubs are still suffering from some lasting effects of the drought. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, botrytis, root rot… you name

it, and we have it in the area. Topical fungicides and Neem oil will work on many of the diseases, but some plants will need a systemic product that works more like a vaccination. Good hygiene is also critical. Clean up all fallen leaves and debris to keep the spores from being redeposited into the soil. » It’s also a banner year for bugs. We encourage you to bring us samples if you have a problem, but please try to find the culprit on your plant. It’s very hard for us to tell you what to use if all we have to go by is a leaf with holes in it. Many insects may be effectively treated with insecticidal soap, but others will require something stronger. Plants that are particularly susceptible may need a systemic product. Caterpillars require their own kind of treatment. Sometimes what you think is insect damage is actually fungal. It isn’t always easy to diagnose! » If you want/need to plant things in your yard, you still can. Some plants (crape myrtles, grasses, perennials) prefer to go in while the soil is nice and warm.

Others will tolerate it if you are religious about watering, and I don’t mean with a sprinkler! Drip systems or hand watering is crucial, especially if Mother Nature gets stingy with the rain again. » Did you plant a vegetable garden this year? How is it doing? If it is going well, share your produce with friends or a food bank! If it isn’t, make notes for next year. Here are the biggest problems I am seeing. 1. Sometimes people don’t realize they need to “rotate” their crops or replace their soil. I know that sounds silly when you’re doing containers or raised beds, but it is critical. 2. Sometimes folks use a sprinkler to water their garden, which is seldom a good idea. Drip irrigation is a better option. 3. Some of you start out with good weeding and working habits, but then it gets hot! Or you go on vacation and the weeds, insects, and diseases take over. It’s ok. Life is a learning process. Come talk to us before you start your fall veggies or before you give up! » Speaking of fall vegetables, you can sow seeds for bush beans, carrots, peas, and greens this month. You can also plant broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. » Keep fertilizing annuals and container plants to keep them looking pretty. You also need to do weekly deadheading and pruning to keep them from getting scraggly and leggy. If they are beyond hope, compost them and plant fresh ones! » Late August is a good time to put a final dose of HollyTone on acid loving plants and RoseTone (or HollyTone) on roses. This will give the resulting new growth time to harden off before we get close to frost season. » Keep weeding, and reapply Preen if it has been three months since you last applied it. Do not apply Preen or any other pre-emergent before sowing seeds, however! It keeps all seeds from germinating, not just weeds. » Keep birdbaths and feeders clean and full as our feathered friends prepare for fall migration. If you are having a problem with squirrels, try using one of the “hot” seeds. These have been treated with hot pepper sauce. Birds do not taste it, but squirrels do! You may also want to experiment with different types of feeders and feed to see what gets the most songbirds. We recommend Cole’s birdseed. That’s all for this month. Random Acts of Flowers Celebrates 75,000th Delivery in Knoxville

(RAF) is celebrating a big milestone this summer! On July 18th, the flagship branch of RAF in Knoxville delivered its 75,000th bouquet to a recipient at Parkwest Hospital. Longtime volunteer liaison, Rita Stroud, was very excited to be a part of this special delivery. “I remember we had 25 bud vases to give out for the first delivery at Parkwest Hospital back in 2009,” she said. “Immediately it was such a blessing. Every recipient is genuinely surprised and excited when we come into their room with a beautiful arrangement. I absolutely love it, and I am so happy to be the liaison at Parkwest.” RAF volunteers Rena McAlister and Andrea Murphy join Stroud each month for the delivery. “Early in 2009, I read an article about a new volunteer outreach program called Random Acts of Flowers,” said McAlister. “Little did I know I would receive so much joy, fun, and satisfaction for giving just a few hours of my time each week.” Murphy, a volunteer since November 2010, added, “I want my son to realize it

It just takes small gestures, time, and a desire to leave a lasting impression.” Random Acts of Flowers began when founder, Larsen Jay, used a personal experience to inspire a simple yet generous mission. After a near-fatal accident, Jay was amazed by the amount of support and encouragement he received as his hospital room filled with beautiful flowers. He soon realized that several of his fellow patients didn’t receive visitors or flowers, and it became his personal mission to share the floral encouragement he had received. The bouquets he shared with other patients that fateful day serve as the inspiration behind RAF’s mission to improve the emotional health and well-being of individuals in health care facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. “For more than nine years, the dedicated team at Random Acts of Flowers have focused on the simplicity of kindness, compassion, and the delivery of hope,” said Jay. “We find great comfort in knowing that the emotional impact of every recycled bouquet delivered in a healthcare facility has a

ripple-effect far beyond the recipient. This significant milestone serves as an ongoing testament to the volunteer spirit and the generosity behind all who support the Random Acts of Flowers’ mission.” Since launching in 2009, the organization has provided personal moments of hope and kindness to more than 225,000 individuals and has recycled more than 250,000 vases nationwide. Rediscover Historic Rugby on the Cumberland Plateau

founded in 1880, is an intriguing British village of rare historic integrity. It’s just 70 miles from Knoxville, but many have yet to discover it. Take the pleasant hour-and-a-quarter drive north to State Scenic Hwy 52, and you’ll find what the National Trust for Historic Preservation calls “one of the most authentically preserved rural villages in America,” set amid the natural beauty of the Cumberland Plateau, along with a 125-year story of dedicated community restoration and preservation. Begin at the Rugby Visitor Centre & Theatre with the national award-winning film, The Power of a Dream. A guide will take you into the 1882 Thomas Hughes Library, the oldest fully preserved and intact free public library in America; 1884 Kingstone Lisle, the founder’s home, with furnishings made or brought by Rugby’s early colonists; Christ Church Episcopal, a Carpenter Gothic gem where services have been held continuously since 1887; and the exhibit-filled 1907 schoolhouse. How did Rugby come to be founded in such a remote area in 1880? Like many towns and communities, it owes its location to a railroad. In 1878, land speculators began staking claims to thousands of acres on the northern Cumberland Plateau along the new Cincinnati Southern Railway line. Among them was industrialist and idealist Franklin W. Smith. His Boston-based “Board of Aid to Land Ownership” planned to relocate unemployed factory workers from the Northeast to the fresh air and forests of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, where they could engage in agriculture. But as the industrial depression eased, Smith looked for another investor. Enter famous British author, social reformer, and statesman Thomas Hughes. Known and beloved worldwide as the author 56

of the semi-autobiographical young people’s classic Tom Brown’s Schooldays, Hughes also achieved prominence as a strong proponent of Christian Socialism, the cooperative movement and trade unionism in Britain, and as champion of the Union cause during America’s Civil War. While on a speaking tour in the early 1870s, Hughes was fascinated by what he saw in America. Especially intriguing to him were the possibilities that its vast, undeveloped land might hold for citizens of his own increasingly crowded country, and he became convinced that “emigration to America, under the right circumstances,” was the best course for many of his countrymen. Long a champion of Britain’s working classes, Hughes was also concerned about the plight of younger sons of Britain’s upper class families. By tradition they did not inherit but were nevertheless expected to “live like gentlemen rather that engage in a trade or profession that was beneath them.” When Rugby officially opened in 1880, Hughes intended it to be a class-free, agricultural community based on cooperative enterprise, cultural opportunity, religious freedom, and temperance. “Our settlement is open,” he declared, “to all who like our principles and our ways.” During its first decade, hundreds of people emigrated from the British Isles to Rugby and from other parts of America. Some stayed only briefly, some for years, and some for life. More than 60 cottages, villas, commercial, and institutional buildings of distinctive, rural Victorian styles were constructed during Rugby’s first decade. Rugby seemed to be thriving and achieving Hughes’ hope of a “class-free, cultured society willing to work with their hands.” Rugby never sustained many of Hughes’ idealistic goals for many reasons. Emigration slowly ceased, but it was never a ghost town. By 1900, some 125 people still lived in the Rugby area, though the mix was more Appalachian then British. Fortunately for future generations, some were determined

to preserve the village and its heritage. From the 1920s through the 1950s, children of original colonists and others lovingly cared for Rugby’s public buildings, river gorge trails, and historic cemetery. Extensive media attention was paid to the need to restore and preserve Rugby. Then, in the mid-1960s, a 16-year-old boy from nearby Deer Lodge resolved to begin what others had dreamed of – the permanent restoration and preservation of the entire village and its history. With help from area residents and people across Tennessee, Brian Stagg formed non-profit Historic Rugby in 1966 to begin restoring and preserving the village and interpreting its history to the public. In 1972, the entire Rugby village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today 12 buildings have been restored or historically reconstructed by Historic Rugby, private homes have been restored, and nearly 1,000 acres of woodland and streams permanently conserved. The community is growing again as people buy protected building lots in Beacon Hill and Boyle Woods, part of the 1880 town plan, and build historically compatible homes. (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present the 17th “Arts in the Airport” exhibition, a new selection of artwork from 41 artists in the East Tennessee region. “Arts in the Airport” was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork is exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint now through October 18. Juror Terri Jordan of the Customs House Museum in Clarksville provided this statement about the exhibition: “Tennessee boasts a large talent of artists, and as a museum curator, I find many of these come from the Eastern part of the state. I was pleased with the variety of mediums in the entries I viewed. It is important to not just master the technical skills, but to also create work that has a strong composition, a story behind it or about it, and a sense of ‘holding its own’ in situation. NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) Index, small business optimism has continued at historically high levels now for more than six consecutive months. NFIB President and CEO, Juanita Duggan, said that this “remarkable surge in optimism that began last year right after the election shows no sign of slowing down.” But indexes, like sentiment, can be disappointing to small business owners who were hoping for a “quick fix” to the economic doldrums that our economy has been languishing in for the past decade or so. Not to say that there hasn’t been bright spots, because there has been. But just where is the growth that entrepreneurs had grown accustomed to after prior recessions? Today entrepreneurs need to balance expectations with reality. Much of the positive economic news being reported on today is forward looking. Like the stock market, where values are a reflection of anticipated future results, economic

Knox County teachers selected for the Tennessee Educator Fellowship, Lindsay Davis looks forward to advocating for the students she teaches at Austin-East Magnet High School. “This fellowship is such a great honor,” said Davis, who teaches math. “I look forward to being a voice for my students. This is an opportunity to meet with educators from across the state to discuss issues surrounding education and also to dialogue with legislators to advocate for our students. This fellowship is an opportunity to learn and educate.” Davis has been teaching for 12 years, four of them at Austin-East. “I have wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten,” she said. “I have never thought about doing anything else. Teaching has always been my passion. I love working with students and sharing my passion for math with them.” Davis earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with a minor in theatre, from Montana State University. Recently she completed her master’s degree in secondary mathematics education 64

from Western Governors University. While there’s no such thing as a typical day in education, most of Davis’ days include two math courses each semester, plus her responsibilities as Freshman Dean. “This role includes many meetings with teachers, administrators, and students,” she said. “I check in with students and monitor their grades to ensure students are passing their classes. I tutor kids who struggle or need extra help. I also run multiple meetings with our awesome freshman teachers.” Davis is eager to make the Knoxville community aware of the accomplishments of her students at Austin-East. “What breaks my heart is that most of Knoxville has no idea how amazing this school is, nor do they know about the brilliant things that our students do,” she said. “On most occasions, the only exposure that the residents of Knox County have to AustinEast is when a news story includes it as a reference point to a crime that has occurred. My struggle is with the misconstrued

I’m constantly having to educate people on what is really happening between the walls of our school. There is so much undeserved negative media coverage that taints people’s perceptions of a place they have never set foot in, because I guarantee that if they did, they would be amazed at what our students do!” Austin-East students definitely have an advocate in Davis, though. “There are so many things that I love about my job, but my students are definitely the best part,” she said. “I love watching the light bulb go off as a student gets a concept for the first time. I could go on and on about how amazing my students are, but really what I love is being part of their story and walking through their high school years (and beyond) with them.”

IKE IT OR NOT, we’re all involved in running the “family business.” We worry that our parents might outlive their retirement savings. Here are just some of the reasons why you should act: Raising children If your children grow up to be less responsible financially, you might feel obligated to come to the rescue. Children can become a financial liability. Because you don’t want your adult children swimming in credit card debt and missing mortgage payments, make sure these types of problems never arise by raising money-savvy children. But that’s more of a challenge than you might imagine. Children grow up spending their parents’ money and have a totally different perspective on finances. For children, all purchases appear free, so they are less concerned about the costs of the items or the need to control their desires. Help your children feel that they are spending their own money. Provide them a candy allowance while they’re young and a clothing allowance as teenagers, and insist that they live within this budget. This way, instead of you constantly saying “no” to your children, they will learn to say “no” to themselves. Launching adults Once your children enter the workforce, encourage them to initiate a “virtuous financial cycle,” where they build wealth for their own futures. to be older than ever, it is common for adult children to find themselves helping their elderly parents through the aging process. One of the more difficult things to face is realizing that a parent is experiencing memory loss. How you interact and behave with your parent who is experiencing memory loss can have a positive result on them. Here are some things you can do to help someone you love who is experiencing mild memory loss. Living Alone If your parent lives alone, you should stop by and check on him or her each day to make sure they are safe. You should alert neighbors to what is going on so they can contact you if they see anything unusual going on with your parent. Misplaced Items If your parent is routinely misplacing things, purchase a brightly colored basket, or other container, and place it in a noticeable location. Tell your parent this is where to put things such as keys, cell phone, watch,

wallet, purse, reading glasses, and other dayto-day things. Remembering the Day of the Week To help parents who are having trouble remembering what day of the week it is, put a note on their dresser, bathroom mirror, or the refrigerator to help remind them what day of the week it is, as well as other important things for the day. For instance, you might write down “Today is Sunday. You should call your sister, Natalie, today to tell her happy birthday. She is turning 67 years old today.” Remembering Medication It can be hard for individuals who are experiencing memory loss to remember to take their medication. If you discover that your parent is forgetting to take their medicine, set a timer to go off when they should take it. Put a note and their medicine by the timer so when they go to turn the timer off, they will be reminded that it is time to take their medicine. Advice for Friends and Family Tell friends and family to not take it personal if your parent forgets important

events. Tell young children that their grandparent is having trouble remembering things and that they should go out of their way to be helpful and to not laugh if their grandparent forgets something they think is silly to forget – such as what day it is or if they have eaten. If Memory Loss Increases If you notice signs that your aging parent is experiencing memory loss to a great degree, you should take him or her to the doctor. The doctor will check your parent for Alzheimer’s disease and/or other cognitive impairments. If something is discovered, you will be advised as to what to expect and the steps both you and your parent can take to work with the disease or impairment. LADY and a gentleman notice.

What kinds of things do they notice? Well, perhaps they might notice: » A little old lady or man standing behind us in the post office line, struggling to stand in the long line. Wonder if we could change places with them? » A mother with three kids trying to carry luggage, kids, and stuff, getting on an airplane. Wonder if we could help her carry something? » A homeless man or lady, regardless of whose fault it is that they’re homeless, who is standing outside a store on a hot day. Wonder if we could buy a cold bottle of 66

water and give it to him or her? » A person walking towards us with their heads down, looking a bit unhappy or concerned about something. Wonder if we could make eye contact, smile, and say, “Hello there. I hope you have a good day?” » The clerk at a store that looks tired and is faking a smile. Wonder if we could start a conversation with them, helping them to know that people really do care? » Our own child, making comments like, “Mom, I wish you could play with me” or “Dad, do you think you will have time to play after your important work?” Wonder if we could recognize the unspoken feelings of loneliness and need for attention?

Ladies and gentlemen, it is so very easy to get caught up in our own needs, responsibilities, and obligations. But here’s the deal. If we’re too busy to do the most important things, then we’re too busy. If we’re too busy to stop and serve others, then we’re too busy. Surely we can all see that at the end of the day, and even at the end of our lives, all that will really matter is who we have helped.

are plenty of opportunities to develop new interests, spend time with friends, and make lasting memories. However, many students struggle to enjoy these moments, because they’re worried about how they look due to the outbreak of acne. Clear skin is often a challenge for students, but the doctor and specialists at Southeastern Dermatology offer many services to help teens overcome acne and reveal a confident, beautiful face. While acne is predominantly a disease of adolescence, it often persists into adulthood. It is important to treat significant acne to prevent emotional as well as physical scars. What causes acne? There are many contributing factors that cause acne, including bacteria, hormones, inflammation, and clogged pores. Excess oil production, which is often the result of hormonal stimulation, combines with naturally occurring bacteria, resulting in inflammation that can clog the pores. The end result of this process is the eruption of a blemish. Types of acne When most people think of acne, they think of big red pimples. However, there are several types of blemishes that a person with acne may have to address, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, and cysts/ nodules. Each of these kinds of blemishes responds differently to various treatments; therefore, it’s important to work with a trained specialist in order to properly address your acne situation. Acne treatment There are several approaches to treating acne. The one that’s recommended to you, or to your child, will depend on his/her unique situation. However, there are some common treatments: » Topical treatments: Topical acne treatments are those preparations that are applied to the skin. They may be in the form of a special wash, cream, or gel. They may work to kill bacteria, decrease the inflammation, or to dry the excess oil. Common topical treatments
