A father's mentoring and inspiration led Pamela Gott Gavin, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, to launch Gott Family Medical Clinic and The Face Place™. Pamela started both to offer the highest quality of health care available while providing her patients an opportunity to enjoy a quality of life and to contribute to the well-being of the community.

S A CHILD, I always looked

forward to August and our annual family vacation. My parents would rent a cottage on the lake in northern Wisconsin, and we all would have the time of our lives swimming, boating, fishing, and making new friends. I never wanted to see August end, as that meant the end of our vacation for a year and the Photo by D. Roberts Photography start of a new school season. In this edition, I wanted to share a Wisconsin travel destination that was always a favorite of mine. Door County in Wisconsin offers some beautiful scenery and many enjoyable activities that will make some family memories to be looked back on for years to come. This destination may become one of your favorite vacation spots, too. August in East Tennessee can be very hot and steamy, but it also brings transitional weather with a hint of fall, which is pleasant for outdoor activities and home projects that are remaining to be completed before much cooler weather arrives. With all the hot temperatures we’ve been 4

experiencing, I will definitely look forward to the coming of fall this year. Dealing with the heat can bring on some physical challenges, and if you are in need of medical treatment, our feature article introduces Pamela Gott Gavin, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, founder and owner of The Face Place™ and Gott Family Medical Clinic. Pamela’s facility offers services to enhance your well-being, and now she has recently introduced CoolSculpting®, which can help keep you in summer shape all year-round. Our August issue also highlights activities and entertainment that can be enjoyed by everyone. If your family is taking a “staycation” at home, then check out our calendar of Knoxville events. You and your family can have the time of your lives right here in East Tennessee, and you also will not wish for August to end. So enjoy the rest of your summer, and get ready for those back-to-school days! And yes, football time in Tennessee is on the horizon!

ANY SUCCESS STORIES begin with the steadfast encouragement of a mentor that oftentimes sees something in us that we are unable to see and believes in us more than we believe in ourselves. Such was the case with James Gott – entrepreneur and, most importantly, devoted father. Early on James identified his daughter, Pamela’s, passion for medicine and encouraged her to pursue a medical career. Pamela soon discovered that she could achieve anything in her life by combining a strong work ethic, a dedication to her dreams, and, most importantly, a desire to serve others. Sadly, James passed away far too early in life but nonetheless fulfilled his most important role in life as both a dad and personal mentor to his daughter. Fortunately, James lived to see Pamela become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s degree in nursing, in addition to becoming a BoardCertified Family Nurse Practitioner. It was in her father’s memory that she launched both Gott Family Medical Clinic and The Face Place™ in 2014. Gott Family Medical Clinic is dedicated to helping every member of your family achieve their optimal health potential, while The Face Place™ offers both non-surgical facial rejuvenation and fat elimination solutions.

Pamela and her dad, James, at her master’s graduation In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are delighted to bring you this interview with Pamela Gott Gavin, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, and founder of Gott Family Medical Clinic and The Face Place™. EK: Pamela, describe for our readers just how important it was for you to have a mentor – in this instance, your father – at such an early point in your life. Pamela: My father was an entrepreneur and an inspirational business leader. His encouragement was paramount in launching two innovative medical practices: The Face Place™ and Gott Family Medical Clinic. I truly owe my strong work ethic and passion for excellence to his emphasis on quality and integrity. EK: Tell us a little bit about your formal medical education and training. Pamela: My formal education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a Master’s degree in Nursing – Advanced Practice Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice, and Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I also have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration and an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene. Additional training and internships include facial aesthetics injector’s training, skincare training, and internships at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals. Most recently I participated in extensive training to study the latest and most advanced CoolSculpting® techniques. I’ve discovered that my diverse education, training, and experience, as well as a compassionate and caring approach to medicine, help me to offer all of my patients the high level of care that they deserve. EK: The Face Place™ is unique in that it offers clients wishing to maintain a more youthful and vibrant appearance a full menu of non-surgical options. Tell our readers about some of the services you provide and why it is so important that they be performed by a skilled medical professional such as yourself. Pamela: We offer a full array of nonsurgical procedures that include dermal fillers, micro-needing, cryogenic therapy, dermaplaning, botulinum toxins, medical grade chemical peels, medical grade skincare products, microdermabrasion, and customized facial volume replacement. To look younger, you should look like a younger

version of yourself and NOT someone else. I have an artistic injecting approach to facial rejuvenation and consult with each patient in-depth to provide a highly personalize nonsurgical facial rejuvenation solution. We also help clients to correct the sometimes poor results that a growing number of them are experiencing from dermal filler injections performed by unskilled or unqualified individuals. This is most often the case when clients are tempted by the “special prices” offered by some injectors. Because this is a medical procedure, The Face Place™ only uses FDA-approved products, and all procedures are performed by a board-certified, trained, and experienced medical professional. EK: You recently introduced an innovative and permanent, non-surgical fat reduction procedure called CoolSculpting®. Describe the procedure, and tell us why it is superior to other procedures marketed today. Pamela: CoolSculpting® is a fat-freezing procedure that is the ONLY FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting, so you’ll look great from every angle. At The Face Place™, our clients are treated to an elegant lunch in a comfortable environment as part of our full-day service. EK: How does CoolSculpting® differ from other fat loss procedures offered today? Pamela: Unlike other procedures that temporarily shrink fat cells, CoolSculpting® actually eliminates fat cells. And thanks to the latest CoolSculpting® innovations, we can now treat larger targeted areas in less time than before. We have the latest technology with CoolSculpting®, which offers more comfort and less treatment time. We are able to treat the chin, abdominals, sides, back, inner and outer thighs, arms, and posterior upper thigh areas, thus eliminating up to 25% of the fat cells permanently in each treated area. EK: Let’s discuss the Gott Family Medical Clinic for a moment. What type of services do you provide? Pamela: The Gott Family Medical Clinic offers a wide range of primary care services, including comprehensive preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, physical

exams, ordering and interpretation of laboratory tests, referrals to specialists, and more. EK: Talk about how you use products such as BOTOX® to treat migraine sufferers. Pamela: Best known for smoothing and reducing fine lines and wrinkles on the face, BOTOX® was approved by the FDA in 2010 to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults. BOTOX® has been shown to dramatically improve the quality of life for many chronic migraine sufferers. EK: You offer a variety of opportunities for individuals to learn about both The Face Place™ and Gott Family Medical Clinic. Do you have any upcoming events that our readers can take advantage of ? Pamela: Periodically we hold a variety of events designed to feature the many products and services we offer. We will have a CoolSculpting® Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, August 22. Space is limited, and RSVP is required by August 15. Another CoolSculpting® event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5. RSVP is required by August 29. Please call 865-789-3162 to register for these events. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Pamela: I started The Face Place™ and Gott Family Medical Center because of my passion for serving people. My goal is to continue my journey by offering you the highest quality of health care available by providing you with the opportunity to enjoy the quality of life each of you deserve and by contributing to the well-being of our community. I would like to personally invite you to discover the many ways that The Face Place™ and Gott Family Medical Clinic can serve you and your family.

homes can have bedbugs. In fact, you’re just as likely to find them in immaculate homes as you are in homes that are not as well maintained. So just where do they come from? The answer may surprise you: Dorm rooms, hotel rooms, cruise ships, and used furniture. Bedbugs simply hitch a ride in luggage or on clothing, furniture, and a variety of other items. Mature adults are about the size of an apple seed and reproduce three or more times per year. Parasitic, they feed on human blood at night while you are asleep. Because of their small size, they usually go undetected, hiding in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and even electrical outlets. Once bitten, victims often confuse the small welt that remains as a mosquito or flea bite. Untreated, bedbugs can become a major infestation that becomes even more difficult to treat. Most homeowners enlist the assistance of a reputable pest control company. There are a variety of proven treatment options available, but at Otis Termite & Pest Control, we offer a proven system for the eradication of bedbugs that is both safe and effective. At Otis Termite & Pest Control, we use an innovative, state-of-the-art system from GreenTech. This system uses heat, rather than pesticides, to eliminate bedbugs. That means there’s no need to worry about residual pesticides once your home is treated. The GreenTech technology is a closed system that safely heats air outside your home and then redistributes the heated air into the room being treated. The heated air safely raises the temperature in the treatment area, killing the bedbugs and their eggs – and all without pesticides. Family owned and operated since 1974, I personally invite you to contact us with questions regarding bedbugs or any other pest related concerns you may have. You can trust the company that East Tennesseans have relied on for 44 years: Otis Termite & Pest Control.

European Fine Hardwood Floors Rediscover Old World Craftsmanship I T’S OFTEN SAID that the best compliment you can give a business is a referral. That’s true for every business, and European Fine Hardwood Floors is certainly no exception. Just read what Farragut homeowner, Chris F., has to say about work that was recently performed at his home by European Fine Hardwood Floors: “The main floor of our home was a mix of red oak hardwood, tile, and carpet. Ever since we purchased this home, we knew that it deserved better, so we decided to have the existing tile and carpet replaced with hardwood with an up-to-date finish. When searching the ratings of ‘hardwood flooring installers and re-finishers,’ European Fine Hardwood Floors was consistently at the top. That meant a lot to me. European Fine Hardwood Floors was absolutely fantastic. I am an avid do-ityourselfer, and I am very picky about my work. I’ve installed more than 1,200 square feet of hardwood flooring myself at my previous home, but this time I decided to hire it out. I’m glad I did, because Valera, European Fine Hardwood Floors’ owner, did a great job. They seamlessly blended the new hardwood flooring in with the existing hardwood and finished it all to match beautifully. It all looks like a factory finish, except without the vis-

ible seams that prefinished hardwood floors have. It is one consistent, smooth surface, and the satin finish is perfect. Another important detail for me was that since our entire downstairs was going to be hardwood, I wanted the hardwood to all lay in the same direction. European Fine Hard-

wood Floors did that, and all the rooms flow together. They gave excellent attention to detail, even on our staircase, which they refinished. Oh, and opt for the custom floor registers... they are a thing of beauty! I can’t say it enough. Valera is very trustworthy. We were under some deadlines to have this project finished, and they finished ahead of schedule. They show up when they say they are going to and can absolutely be trusted in your home!” Whether your project is to install new hardwood f looring or to refinish your existing hardwood flooring in your home, discover a new level of excellence that only European Fine Hardwood Floors can offer. They have a passion for integrity, honesty, and fairness combined with a level of old world craftsmanship you might have thought no longer existed today. Don’t take our word for it, just check out their customer reviews for yourself.

Dolly’s Dollywood Reminds Visitors to Dream Big

M

OST PEOPLE probably

don’t consider a trip to a theme park as an opportunity to broaden one’s horizons or to serve as inspiration to reach for the stars. But then again, Dollywood is much more than a “regular” theme park. Inside Dollywood, guests can find several attractions designed to inform, entertain, and encourage them to pursue their own dreams – just like Dolly! Chasing Rainbows To share the results of her decades of dreaming, and to inspire others to follow their own, Dolly introduced Dollywood’s Adventures in Imagination area in 2002. The area includes a state-of-the-art museum called Chasing Rainbows, featuring interactive and behind-the-scenes collections, stories, and memorabilia from Dolly’s life and career. Visitors see costumes from Dolly’s movie career, including 9 to 5 and Straight Talk, as well as many lavishly sequined gowns worn during her countless concerts, award shows, and special appearances. An entire case contains Dolly’s many awards, including Grammy, Country Music Association, and People’s Choice Awards, as well as plaques commemorating gold and platinum records. In addition, a touching display features the original handwritten lyrics to some of her biggest hits. Through special notes, pictures, and keepsakes, guests are able to follow Dolly’s path from the mountains of East Tennessee to the grandest stages around the world. Dolly’s Home-on-Wheels Just outside Chasing Rainbows, park guests can find Dolly’s Home-on-Wheels, an immaculate motor coach once used by the entertainment legend on her many trips throughout the United States. Designed by Dolly’s longtime road manager, bus driver,

14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2017

and friend, Don Warden, and his wife, Ann, the 1994 Prevost features hand-tooled leather from Germany on the sofa and chairs, cherry cabinets, and brass fixtures. In addition to the bedroom, the coach includes three bunks, two bathrooms, and a shower. Guests are invited inside the coach for a brief glimpse into Dolly’s life on the road. Three clocks in Dolly’s bedroom always receive a special glance from guests. One clock is set to Los Angeles time, one is on Nashville time, and the third – in a nod to her roots – is set on Dollywood time. Tennessee Mountain Home Millions around the world have heard the beautiful song about Dolly’s upbringing in the picturesque Smoky Mountains, but only visitors to Dollywood can see for themselves a replica of Dolly’s Tennessee Mountain Home. In this small, two-room replica of her Locust Ridge childhood home, guests gain a greater understanding of why Dolly’s rise from the hills of Tennessee to superstardom and stages around the world is even more impressive. From its newspaper covered walls and quaint kitchen to its modest living quarters, many guests leave amazed by the replica of the Parton family house. But while it may have been small, and lacking electricity and running water, love was abundant in the tiny little mountain house that Dolly and her family called home. Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame It’s only fitting that the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame make its home at Dollywood. The granddaughter of a Pentecostal preacher, Dolly first sang in church. In 2010, Dolly received the Southern Gospel Music Association’s James D. Vaughan Impact Award. Gospel music has and always will hold a very special place in

her heart. And, the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame has a very special place in her theme park, too. Located on Showstreet, near Dollywood’s entrance, the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame tells the story of a timeless genre of music, passed down from one generation to the next and steeped in the traditions of Sunday worship and all-night gospel singings. Southern gospel music traces its roots back more than 100 years, when hymns rang from the many tiny churches that dotted the landscape of the Southeastern United States. Soon groups – often families – decided to share God’s word through gospel music. By doing so, the Southern gospel music industry was born. And, oh, how it has grown. On April 17, 1999, Dollywood welcomed the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The 4,000-square-foot facility serves not only as the industry’s headquarters, but also as a tribute to all who contributed to Southern gospel music’s success. More than 350 artifacts are displayed, representing more than 100 groups and individuals. The Hall of Fame pays tribute to 80 members, with new honorees inducted annually. The Vaughan Radio Quartet, the Stamps All-Star Quartet, the Speer Family, the LeFeveres, the Blackwood Brothers, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Rangers, the Sunshine Boys, the Happy Goodmans, the Statesmen, the Harmoneers, the Florida Boys, the Oak Ridge Quartet, the Weatherfords, and the Rebels all laid a firm foundation for those who would follow. Today such groups as the Gaither Vocal Band, the Martins, the Isaacs, and the McKameys still travel across the country and around the world sharing their musical ministries.

is hosting its inaugural event, Ultra Trail Knoxville, at Ijams Nature Center on Sunday, October 15. Runners can sign up until October 11 for 50k or 25k trail running races within Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. Ultra Trail Knoxville will be the first ultra trail race within the city limits of Knoxville. The unique area provides a fast trail with rolling and flat terrain along downtown’s south waterfront that is sure to be breathtaking at this beautiful time of year for Knoxville. “I am a professional ultra runner myself, and I wanted to return to my hometown to further the efforts of Knoxville’s urban wilderness and provide an opportunity to race an ultra trail right in Knoxville,” said Janessa Taylor, one of the race directors. The schedule of events includes packet pick-up at the Runners Market in Knoxville

on Friday, October 13, from 3 to 6 pm and the ultra run on Sunday, October 15. The 50k and 25k will start at 8 am at Ijams Nature Center. Registration is up and running with fees of $75 for the 50k until August 31 and $85 between September 1 and October 11. For the 25k race, the fees are $40 until August 31 and $50 between September 1 and October 11. All are welcome to Ijams Nature Center after the race for food, raffle prizes, awards, and fun! Ultra Trail Knoxville will donate a portion of its proceeds to further the efforts of The Legacy Parks Foundation, existing to preserve East Tennessee’s natural resources, open spaces, parks, and trails. Crux Ridge Running exists to create challenging tail races from the mountains of Oregon to the urban wilderness of Tennessee. For more information, visit www. ultratrailknoxville.com.

a convenient excuse used by far too many seniors today who have learned to accept diminished health and well-being, but at 76 years young, Emily Vreeland is proving them all wrong. This surprising grandmother of two has led an enthusiastic hiking group of more than 70 members from her church, the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, for the last four years. Twice a month Emily and her dedicated followers traverse the rolling topography of East Tennessee. In fact, Emily has hiked more than 500 miles of trails throughout our Great Smoky Mountains, inspiring other seniors seeking a more active and healthy lifestyle to follow her. But Emily’s real success began 10 years ago when she described herself as feeling “fat, frumpy, and old.” Emily decided that she wanted to be an active grandmother for her two grandsons. When Emily asked me if I thought she could lose 30 pounds, I told her that it was entirely up to her and that Fitness Together would team up with her to customize a plan designed to help her achieve her personal goals. As a result of her efforts, Emily has achieved her goals and has managed to maintain a healthy weight, all while building muscle and improving her health. “Most people don’t think I act or look anywhere near as old as I am,” said Emily. “I also give credit to my genetics.” She was understandably hesitant at first, but as she started feeling stronger, she became more motivated to continue to pursue her goals. “Instead of just driving through the Smokies, I started getting out of the car and walking on some of the trails,” she said. She also started walking around her hilly neighborhood more often and in less time. Slowly but surely, Emily was not just making her appointments at Fitness Together – she was becoming a committed and enthusiastic exerciser! The greatest motivation for Emily to continue on her personal journey has

been our great team of personal trainers. “There’s not a day that goes by that my trainer doesn’t ask me how I’m doing, and they are always willing to modify my program depending on how I’m feeling that day,” said Emily. “The Fitness Together trainers are all very nice and have good senses of humor, but they all challenge me. Even when I don’t want to do an exercise or think I’ve done enough, they are always able to find a way to motivate me to go a little further each time. Moving is better than sitting. You’re never too old or too tired to begin – they are just excuses. You just have to put one foot in front of the other to get started. Make a decision to get started, and then just do it!” And that’s not just talk, as Emily and her husband visited Whister, BC, where they hiked and ziplined, and they went to the Allegheny National Forest in June. Next up, Costa Rica. Emily’s success story can become your success story. You are just one decision away from a higher level of health and well-being. 6 Ways to Stay Cool When Entertaining CONTENT PROVIDED BY BPT

W

HEN THE temperature rises,

hosts need to stay as cool as can be when entertaining friends and family. The secret is planning ahead to deliver easy ambiance, crowd-pleasing food, and plenty of fun. Start with versatile foods that can both stand alone and serve as recipe-enhancing ingredients to help keep summertime hosting stress-free. 1. Turn to the summer host’s best friend – an entrée salad that’s cool, crunchy, and refreshing, like the Crispy Garlic Chicken Chopped Salad (recipe follows) that tickles tastebuds with a delightful contrast of sweet California grapes and savory toasted garlic. 2. Spending the afternoon poolside? Keep an assortment of floats and inflatable tubes so guests can relax or play in the water. Stock a mini-fridge with cool beverages, and tuck small bags of grapes in the freezer section for a cooling snack. Hint: Grapes also make great ice cubes that won’t dilute a drink!

3. Put together an Italian-inspired antipasto platter in minutes – arrange clusters of fresh grapes next to olives, marinated artichoke hearts, cubes of provolone cheese, and roasted red peppers on a large plate. Serve with crusty Italian bread. 4. Liven up any picnic with a cooler filled with easy-to-eat red, green, and black California grapes that have been cut into small clusters ahead of time. Add some assorted cheeses, crackers, fresh veggies, and Mediterranean dips, and let the party begin. 5. Say olé to cool summer libations at celebrations. Start the party with an unexpected and unique drink, the frosty Grape Mojito, shown at right. Red grapes add natural sweetness and a pop of color. 6. Set up a grilled fruit buffet for a fun snack or dessert. Thread fresh grapes, pineapple chunks, and peach cubes on skewers. Brush lightly with oil and grill until the fruits begin to caramelize, which deepens and enhances flavor. Serve with a choice of sorbets.

Grape Mojito Ingredients: » 3 wedges lime » 12 mint leaves » 6 large red California grapes, halved, plus more for garnish » 2 teaspoons sugar » 2 oz. white rum » Ice » Club soda Directions: In a cocktail glass, muddle together two of the lime wedges, mint leaves, grape halves, sugar, and rum until the sugar dissolves. Fill the glass with ice, and top off with club soda. Top with the reserved lime wedge and more grapes. Ingredients: » 1/3 cup grapeseed oil » 6 large cloves garlic, very thinly sliced » 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts » 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided » 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided » 1/4 cup lemon juice » 1 tablespoon rice vinegar » 2 teaspoons honey » Pinch cayenne » 3 cups chopped romaine lettuce » 2 cups chopped radicchio » 2 cups chopped green cabbage » 2 cups halved California grapes » 1 cup thinly sliced celery » 1/4 cup roughly chopped mint

Sprinkle the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Transfer 2 tablespoons of the garlic oil back to the skillet. Heat over medium-high until almost smoking, and add the chicken. Whisk the lemon juice, vinegar, and honey into the remaining garlic oil. Season with 1/4 teaspoon each kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, and cayenne. Combine romaine, radicchio, cabbage, grapes, celery, and mint in a large bowl. Chop the chicken and add to the bowl along with the dressing. Toss to mix and serve sprinkled with the crispy garlic.

Directions: Heat the oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add the garlic and cook until browned and crisp, removing pieces as they brown with a slotted spoon, about 2 minutes altogether. Pour the oil into a heatproof cup.

HE SEVENTH ANNUAL Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival will be held on Saturday, August 26, from 8 am to 2 pm. Presented by the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and Ijams Nature Center, visitors have the opportunity to see ruby-throated hummingbirds up close at a banding demonstration by Mark Armstrong, a certified Master Bander. Banding demonstrations will take place between 8 and 11:30 am. Hummingbirds are harmlessly captured,

weighed, measured, and banded before being sent on their way. Banding provides a way to document hummingbird movement during migration. August and September are busy migration months in Tennessee with thousands of hummingbirds moving south on their way to wintering grounds in Central America and Southern Mexico. The festival features speakers on nature topics, wildlife educational demonstrations, and vendors selling food and drinks, plants, locally made arts and crafts, bird feeders and supplies, and garden items.

new direction in one’s life is not always easy, but that is exactly what local artist Judy Sinclair accomplished seven years ago. Believing that perhaps she was always meant to become an artist, Judy chose instead to ignore her innermost feelings. But thanks in large part to the encouragement from her husband and her faith in God, Judy finally listened to her inner voice and made what she now believes was the best decision of her life. Fortunate to have traveled extensively throughout the world while her husband served in the U.S. Air Force, Judy relies on her experiences as her inspiration to create colorful mixed media paintings. Judy has taken numerous art courses at the college level and has studied under a variety of gifted artists, all of which have helped develop her own unique style. In love with the very colors that make her happy, it is her hope that her creations will bring that same joy to those people who view her works. Judy prefers to work with acrylic paints, which she enhances with handmade paper, stained glass pieces, semi-precious stones, handmade yarn, and a variety of other natural elements designed to provide both added texture and depth to her paintings. Many readers may be familiar with her title “Bear Territory,” which was chosen as the official print for the 2015 Dogwood Arts Festival and was reproduced into posters for that event. Today you can view many of Judy’s paintings at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. Her pieces are also available for sale, along with the art of other local and regional artists. Also, plan on joining us in historic downtown Sweetwater on August 21st for the Solar Eclipse Festival. More than 100 vendors will be on hand to provide a day of fun for the entire family, weather permitting. Pray for a sunny day!

Many Retirees are Still Eligible for Social Security Maximization Strategies

I

B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

N 2 0 1 6 , the rules were changed for

married couples intending to use a Social Security claiming strategy to maximize their benefits. While the most advantageous “file and suspend” strategy was phased out, there is still an opportunity to maximize Social Security benefits. If you were age 62 by January 2, 2016, Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA you are in the last group that will be allowed to claim a restricted application for spousal benefits only. I’m finding that many people are unaware of this opportunity and are inadvertently leaving money on the table, so let me explain with an example. Let’s say you and your spouse are approaching age 66 (your full retirement age) and thinking of retiring. Neither of you have yet claimed your Social Security benefits. You still have the ability for the higher-earning spouse to begin taking SS benefits, while the other spouse takes a spousal benefit only – letting his/her own benefit continue to grow at 8% per year until he/she is age 70 and then switching to that higher monthly amount. Of course this is just one example of a claiming strategy. There are many different maximization scenarios. Be aware that this rule change applies to ex-spousal benefits as well, while widow’s strategies were left unchanged. To recap the requirements: » You had to be at least 62 years old by January 2, 2016. » Your spouse needs to be claiming their SS benefits. » You need to be at your full retirement age (generally 66) before you begin. This benefit is terminating as of January 1, 2020, so if you are in this last grandfathered group, don’t miss this opportunity! It’s more important than ever. If it sounds confusing to you, please let me help you understand which claiming strategies are still available to you and your spouse. We use specialized software to sort through multiple strategies to find the right one for you. Just provide us with a recent Social Security earnings statement, and we’ll prepare an analysis for $59. Mention this article, and we’ll offer you a discounted price of $39.

The g n i t e g d u B l o o h c S of Back-to 1. Create a budget.

One of the best ways to spend wisely is to create a budget. If you don’t already have one, open a new spreadsheet on your computer or get out a pen and paper. Consider all the potential back-to-school expenses and not just the obvious ones, such as school supplies and clothing. For example, you’ll want to factor in extracurricular or after-school activities, tutoring, special school trips, and even lunch costs.

2. Collaborate with other parents.

Consider joining parent groups, either through your school or community. These groups can offer a great support network to share ideas and information. They also serve as a fantastic resource for meeting parents who have items such as sports equipment their kids have outgrown or even musical instruments their children no longer play. This can lead to some serious money-saving deals.

can into those few precious summer months, but inevitably, they’re gone before you know it. As summer vacations, sleepovers, and outdoor grilling come to a close, it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. You may be working to pay off summer vacation bills when you realize you need to budget and pay for your child’s school supplies, clothing, and other related school expenses. In a recent survey conducted by Coinstar, about half of U.S. parents with kids between ages five and 18 believe school expenses are increasing. Of those surveyed, 57% will create a back-to-school budget. To ease rising school costs, here are five budgeting tips that will help you get more for your back-to-school dollar.

With rising school costs, the old saying that every penny counts really is true. You can literally put this into practice by collecting all the loose change around your house or tucked away in your coin jar and bringing it to a Coinstar kiosk or bank.

4. Make a shopping list.

Most schools provide a back-to-school list to help you plan and shop for your child. Use this as a starting point to make your own list and then stick to it! Retailers are set up to encourage impulse buys, but checking to see if something is or is not on your list is one of the most effective ways to avoid purchasing non-essential items and blowing your budget.

5. Embrace the three Rs.

Your kids will probably learn about the three Rs in school: Reduce, reuse, recycle. This is a great principle to keep in mind when getting them ready for school, especially for back-to-school clothes. Choosing quality basics such as a jacket, skirt, sweater, or jeans that can be combined with other clothing in your child’s closet will reduce the need for quantity purchases. In addition, consignment stores and online retailers are very popular and offer gently used items that check the “reuse” box. And finally, don’t forget to take advantage of hand-me-downs, whether from older siblings or friends. Going back to school should be an exciting time for you and your kids. With these five budgeting tips, you can help cut the financial stress out of the process and kick the school year off to a great start. August 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

can develop as a young dog matures. Owners can help their dogs mature into confident, stable dogs by carefully and consistently introducing pets to other people, friendly dogs, and by introducing them to controlled environments. Doggy Daycare can be a productive means of reducing shyness. At Ms. C’s, we work with many shy and timid dogs. Contact with new people and environments are the key to successfully conquering shyness. Owners play an important role, as dogs develop perceptions based on their owner’s actions. At daycare, projecting a happy, relaxed posture and tone of voice and ignoring your dog if she clings to you or begs for attention promotes a secure feeling. Developing a strong relationship requires time. Starting with half, then full days, and finally overnight stays work wonders.

Our staff has been trained to recognize our guests’ individual personalities, earning a dog’s trust, as soon as the dog enters our facility. Simple steps include avoiding direct eye contact, staying quiet and still, crouching down or sitting on the floor, standing sideways to the dog, and letting the dog initiate contact and approach is important. When the dog builds confidence, it will touch our staff’s hand, initiating a bond, followed by eye contact and gentle touch, avoiding a fear response. Focusing on gentle, positive interaction makes for playful, happy dogs. Call to begin acclimating your dog to new environments.

GREG KIHN I

F YOU LISTENED to the radio at

all in the early ’80s, there’s no doubt you heard two songs that seemed to dominate the airwaves: The Breakup Song and Jeopardy, both by The Greg Kihn Band. Since those award-winning days, Kihn has been quite the renaissance man, continuing to record albums, as well as DJing in the San Francisco area and writing novels. It was that first activity that Kihn recently contacted me. We chatted about his new CD, ReKihndled. He called from his California home, and we started with him updating me on what he’s been up to the last few years. Answering my question to verify that ReKihndled was his 17th album, Kihn said, “Yeah. I’m proud of this one because, number one, it’s got my son on it – Ry Kihn. And I think, materially, it’s a lot better than the other albums. You get these song ideas and, if you’re not in songwriting mode, a lot of them just get pushed off to the back burner. At the end of a year, I had a ton of really good album ideas. Writing the songs was actually the easy part.” Why the title ReKihndled? “I hope it ‘rekindles’ my career!” said Kihn. “How’s that? I figured when we started making these ‘Kihn’ puns, it was early in the game. We named the first album – it was just Greg Kihn. And then we got the second album, and they said, ‘What do you want to call it?’ and some wisenheimer said, ‘Let’s do it Greg Kihn Again.’ Okay. So now we have two albums. Then the next album comes out. ‘What do you want to name it?’ ‘How about Next of Kihn?’ It just started, and it never stopped. Kihnsolidation, Kihnspiracy. There are dozens." Which song would be the CD’s calling card? “Oh, that’s a great question!” he said. “I would say my favorite is Big Pink Flamingos. But if you wanted the best song that really reflected what the album was all about, I would say – you know, that’s a good question. It’s thought provoking, but there’s the first song on there called The Life I Got, which is very autobiographical. I say that would be the album cut that I would think would most represent us. The Life I Got. That’s cut one. Side one.”

B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

Then, out of the blue, Kihn said, “You know, it’s a good life being a musician. I’ve been real lucky in my life. I feel like it’s been a long, successful career, and I just feel like I was blessed. When I was a little kid, my mom used to say, ‘Well, if you can get a job being a musician, you’re blessed!’ Low and behold, I did it! I don’t know how I did it. I just did it. “Like I said before – I say this all the time. I probably sound like a broken record, but I’m blessed! I really am! I had a wonderful career and have written a whole bunch of songs. It was never hard for me. They say that someday you’re going to run out of ideas. It hasn’t happened to me. The last 40 years it hasn’t happened to me, so I feel like I’m really lucky and just having that gig where ‘what do you do in life?’ ‘Well, I play music.’ That’s pretty good, man.” Wrapping up our chat, I asked Kihn what I ask other artists of his tenure and stature: When you step off the tour bus called life many years from now, how do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy will be? “You know, that’s a really good question, because nowadays – this was never the thing before – but nowadays I have grandchildren, and I’m really thinking about grandpa’s legacy. I come over to their house for dinner, and my son, Ry, and I go down there and they always say, ‘Get out the guitars! Get out the guitars!’ Now they want to play the guitar. They want to sing songs. They’re five and eight years old. But it really makes me think about my legacy. When those guys are teenagers, hopefully I’ll still be around and they’re still gonna want to be playing my songs. One of my dreams is that – I’ve got my son in the band – wouldn’t it be great to have my grandkids in the band and have three generations of Kihn up there on stage? That would blow my mind!”

Keep up with Greg Kihn and his, well, kin, at www.GregKihn.com, and read the muchexpanded version of this interview at www. Boomerocity.com. Ra n d y’s f i rst i n te r v i e w was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. T SUPERIOR CARPET & Rug

Cleaning, all Oriental rugs are washed by hand in our highly specialized, stateof-the-art boutique using our 11-step proprietary rug washing process we developed during the past decade. There’s simply no in-home alternative to correctly or safely washing Oriental rugs. We call our process “For a Clean That Can Be Seen.” Because most homeowners are unfamiliar with Oriental rug washing, we created a short video demonstrating the proper methods used to wash your valuable rugs and how to avoid the damage that can result when untrained and inexperienced individuals attempt to clean them. I encourage you to visit our website to view this informative video. I’ve devoted a large portion of my more than 30 year professional career researching information on the history, crafting, and caring for fine Oriental rugs, including visiting with individuals whose families have been hand-crafting quality Oriental rugs for three generations or more. Knowing how Oriental rugs are crafted is as important as knowing how to care for them, and because we help homeowners care for their rugs, this understanding is essential. There’s simply no correlation between wall-to-wall carpeting and Oriental rugs, so they can’t be cared for using the same methods. Oriental rug creation begins with a design that often has a historical significance unique to the region where they are produced. Most rugs are hand-crafted using fine, all-natural wool that’s been hand-dyed using a variety of organic dyes. The dyed wool yarn is then hand-knotted in rows onto a cotton or wool warp, with as many as 400 knots per square inch in the finest Persian rugs. Although they may appear fragile, the longwearing Oriental rugs are rugged and can outlast conventional carpet by centuries if properly cared for. But, their all natural fibers and organic dyes require entirely different cleaning methods. As we begin our 33rd year in business, we have been helping families care for their fine Oriental rugs so they can be passed onto future generations as heirlooms. If you desire the lasting beauty and longevity that was so carefully hand-crafted into your fine Oriental rugs, then we can help. Regardless of your rug’s value, we value and treat each rug as an heirloom. Call today or email and ask if our pickup and delivery service is available where you live.

we recently doubled our existing showroom space, we could easily increase it many times over in order to display more of the extensive product line of 100% genuine, hand-crafted Amish furniture. We believe that most people prefer to see the quality craftsmanship and to work with someone who can guide them in the decision making before they make a significant purchase for their home. We listen to your needs and preferences and provide you with plenty of information so that you are better equipped to make a decision that best meets your needs and budget. While online sales are convenient for purchasing books, sneakers, or rugs, it isn’t wise to purchase high-end furniture in that manner. We realize that Amish-manufactured furniture is available online. There is a distinct difference in furniture that is manufactured on an assembly line where there may be some Amish employees versus bench-made in Amish-owned workshops. The benefit to that is there aren’t multiple layers of brokers, factory reps, or order takers who don’t know you or your needs. And,

that can result in mistakes. We have a direct business relationship with the craftsmen who make the furniture the way you want it. Also, because you have the opportunity to actually see, touch, and feel many of the products available in our showroom, you can expect the same quality when it’s delivered. And, if by chance there is a problem, Amish Excellence is a local resource for you. We stand behind everything we sell and are diligent in finding solutions for our customers. How can I change up my dining room without redoing it all? By changing the paint color or switching it up with new wallpaper, you can quickly change it from drab to fab. Update your centerpiece by exchanging your accessories for more fresh accents. Bring in new colors or moods by switching up the artwork. Add height to the space with new window treatments. Also, consider changing out your host and hostess chairs – this is a great way to add new energy to a dining set. How low should the chandelier go? Ideal height is above the table top 30-36” for an eight foot ceiling, and for each additional

Additionally, the chandelier should be at least 12” narrower than the dining table. Keep in mind that there doesn’t have to be just one chandelier, especially if you have a really long room! I want to have my dining room redone before the holidays. When should I start? Honestly, the best time to start is August or September, that way there is enough time to get all of the new upholstery, casegoods, and window treatments in, and there is less rush to decide on selections. We’re not really formal people. Does it have to be fancy? No, we design your room to meet your

lifestyle, and if you want it more causal, that’s great! If you want it to be versatile – sometimes formal, as well as casual – we can design it that way, too. Does it have to be a dining room? No, maybe it would be a good library or a music room. You can also make it a multifunction space that can convert to dining for special occasions but for everyday, be what you and your family need, like a game room or a quiet retreat. Reclaim your dining room today by scheduling your complimentary consultation with the award-winning Kozar Design Team!

retractable screens, you’re likely not enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their fullest. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects, in larger numbers than ever due to our abundant rains, are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. Homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. Unfortunately, hot afternoon suns and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces as often as they might have hoped to. Retractable screens provide the perfect solutions to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. One of the best features of retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to complement your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are called for. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

An outfit worn by Kate Winslet in Titanic will be on display in Biltmore House as a preview of the upcoming exhibit, “Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie.” The exhibition’s 45 costumes will be displayed in Biltmore House, evoking the lifestyle of the era, when voyages on great ocean liners of the early 20th century offered luxury on ships known as “floating palaces.” First class passengers took every opportunity to see and be seen in the fashions of the time, from strolling the promenade deck to dining at elegant formal dinners. And, just like in Titanic, the days at sea fostered friendships and romances,

including George Vanderbilt’s courtship of Edith Stuyvesant Dresser. Admission to “Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie” is included in the general admission ticket price. For more information about Biltmore, visit www. biltmore.com/titanicfashion. About Biltmore Located in Asheville, North Carolina, Biltmore was the vision of George W. Vanderbilt. It’s More Than a Mudroom

M

UDROOM: WHILE SOME

hate the label “mudroom,” it’s a good description of how we often use the space. It can be a messy catchall for daily items like shoes, coats, bags, dog leashes, and all the things we carry every day to and from work or school. It’s also the area of the home that sees the most traffic. So besides a place to sit as you take on and off your shoes, the mudroom area can be designed to do so much more. » Include Hooks and Cubbies Every member of the family needs their own coat hook and cubby space. Kids are more likely to hang their backpack and jackets on a hook, keeping them organized and saving time on school mornings when everything is in its place. Cubbies help everyone keep track of everyday items like a purse or cap. If you have the space, you can add more for guests. » Add Cabinets A mudroom is part of your home, so dress up the look of the space by adding cabinet doors over the cubbies. Doors make a mudroom look more stylish rather than a catchall zone. And, let’s be honest, a cabinet door hides any cluttered shelves. » Put in a Hamper With a hamper, clothes that are wet, soiled,

or muddy have a place to go. Otherwise those clothes end up dropped on the floor or left in a kid’s backpack. Nobody wants to discover a smelly, wet t-shirt days later in a backpack! » Create a Communications Station Since the mudroom sees daily traffic, make it a place for family communications. Include a chalk or corkboard for reminders such as grocery items or baseball practice. Now the refrigerator won’t be covered with

notes, invitations, and pictures. Also, include USB ports to create a place to recharge family cell phones, tablets, and other electronic equipment. » Install a Sink A sink helps to cut down on the dirt. So if you have the space, install one to help keep everyone – and your house – clean. » Use the Garage If you are renovating and you don’t have the space for a mudroom inside your house, many people are using the garage. Placed just outside the garage door, a mudroom serves the same purpose and keeps a lot of the dirt out of the house. Want to create a mudroom for your house? Tailored Living of Knoxville will work with you to design, select materials that coordinate with the rest of your house, and install the space that best fits your family’s needs. You’ll love your new space and ask yourself, “Why didn’t we do this a long time ago?”

HE WAY COREY SMITH sees it, he owes a debt to his fans. And it’s one he is determined to repay with his 10th album, While the Gettin’ is Good. The project, released on Sugar Hill Records, marks the first time that the singersongwriter, a wildly popular touring artist who has produced all of his past efforts, has turned over the reins to a bona fide country music producer in Keith Stegall. The result is Smith’s most ambitious record yet, as well as a return on the investment made by the fans who have supported him since his first album in 2003.

S E L E C T I N G a furniture consigner, ask yourself this question: Why consign at all? For years, individuals wishing to sell unused furniture items either placed an ad in a local newspaper or had a yard sale, but not so much anymore. Concerns about personal safety have resulted in many Americans turning away from trying to sell any number of household items by themselves. In fact, things have gotten so bad that those selling items on Craigslist are being encouraged by law enforcement agencies across the nation to complete their sales transactions in the parking lots of their local police stations. Selling furniture by yourself is akin to selling your home by yourself. Sure, it can be done, but is it really worth all the effort? Do you really want to invite strangers into your home? Are they there for legitimate reasons or other purposes? Do you take their personal check? What about scheduling appointments and then the annoying no-shows? We launched Premiere Consignment five years ago with the goal of helping our neighbors sell their gently used, name brand furniture, art pieces, home décor items, and Oriental rugs without all of the hassle associated with attempting to sell their unused household items themselves. We offer our consigners a complete turnkey environment, which greatly enhances their potential to sell their items at the highest possible prices. Our retail showroom, open six days a week, offers buyers the perfect opportunity to shop at their convenience. Also, Premiere Consignment handles the entire transaction from beginning to end. We also offer you the opportunity to market many of your items online using our very successful eBay store. So forget the ad in the local paper or on Craigslist and put away the yard sale signs, and discover the safe, easy, and most convenient way to sell your gently used furniture, décor, art, and oriental rugs – the no-hassle Premiere Consignment way. UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

TENNESSEE

DANCING GOURD BY AMY DISMUKES, UT/ TSU EXTENSION, WILLIAMSON COUNT Y

M

Y FIRST INTROD U C T I O N to the

Tennessee Dancing Gourd was a few years back at the Williamson County Fair, when a Master Gardener submitted a tiny green and white cutie for judging in the fruit and vegetable competition. With just one glance I knew I was in for trouble. I had to have it if only to satisfy my infatuation with heirloom plants. When thinking of the gourd plant, we immediately envision the typical bottle-type variety most recognizable in its birdhouse form. There are many others, however, that tend to be overlooked, if only because they’re not commercially available by seed or hard to find. This would be the case with the Tennessee Dancing Gourd (TDG). TDG (Cucurbita pepo var. ovifera), also known as the Tennessee Spinner, is an heirloom variety and a member of the cucurbit family. It’s grown annually from seed. At one time, seeds became almost impossible to find, leaving many a gourd enthusiast to believe this gem may have disappeared for good. There’s very little known about the TDG other than it originated from a Mr. Gordon of Primm Springs in Hickman County, Tennessee, and its popularity was high with children. These tiny treasures provided hours of entertainment, as they can be spun just like a top. It’s said that many a playground would be littered with these tiny treats after lunch, because kids would carry them in their pockets to play with at school. Cultivation tips for TDG are similar to others in the family. Plant in warm soil, whether

50

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2017

starting with seed or seedling. Provide plenty of nutrients throughout the season. Cucurbits are heavy feeders and benefit with a side dressing when the plants begin to bloom and fruit. Just like its brothers, sisters, and cousins, TDG is a vining plant that loves a good sprawl and can grow upwards of eight feet in length, while the gourd itself only reaches one to three inches at maturity. The prolifically productive vines can be left to trail the ground or, like those at my house, grown upright in a large pot with a support trellis. Gourds like water as do other cucurbits but not too much. Water TDG deeply once a week, applying at least one inch of water. If growing in a raised bed or container system, increase frequency, as the roots and surrounding soil will dry faster because they are exposed to the elements when above ground. A little wilt in scorching, mid-afternoon sun is normal, and they’ll recover once the sun sets. The extreme heat, humidity, and periods of drought experienced in Tennessee can stress these plants, reducing production. Mulch can help keep the soil around the roots moist, regulate soil temperature, and keep the plants healthy. Common pests include cucumber beetles, vine borers, and squash bugs. Trap crops of nasturtium or dill, as an herb companion can be beneficial in deterring these flying plagues. Proactive applications of pyrethrum can also significantly reduce pest populations. To decrease incidence, use disease-resistant varieties, don’t overhead water, prune and

destroy any damaged plant tissue, and rotate annually. To ensure pollination and fruit set, use a small paintbrush or similar device to transfer pollen from the male to the female flower. The female is very easy to recognize in that a tiny fruit will be visible on the backside of the flower. This technique can be especially beneficial early in the season when pollination may be questionable. TDGs are best if harvested around 95 days after planting and should be dried in a cool location. Poking a small hole in the bottom of the gourd is recommended to prevent mold or mildew of the seeds inside. After the hard shell fully dries to a light tan and the seeds rattle inside when shaken, you’re ready to spin them. These little guys also make great decorated ornaments, and because they’re an heirloom, the seeds may be saved for years to come. Once thought to be on its way out, the Tennessee Dancing Gourd is no wallflower… and if you let her, she’ll spin her way into your heart just as she did mine. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

August in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

W

ELCOME TO the “dog days” of summer. I’m not even going to pretend that I’m going to be outside doing a lot of yardwork when it is 98 degrees with 1,000% humidity, and I know that you aren’t likely to be out there either. Nevertheless, there are some things that will need to be done either early in the morning before it gets scorching hot or late in the afternoon when the sun is less intense. » Keep an eye on things so you don’t have unpleasant surprises when you do a fall checkup. Walk around the perimeter of your yard and through your flower beds. Look up for broken branches or dead areas in trees. Look down for fungal problems in your lawn and vole holes. Look all around for signs of disease and insects on your plants. » We are an absolute fungal soup this year, which is doubly bad because our trees and shrubs are still suffering from some lasting effects of the drought. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, botrytis, root rot… you name

it, and we have it in the area. Topical fungicides and Neem oil will work on many of the diseases, but some plants will need a systemic product that works more like a vaccination. Good hygiene is also critical. Clean up all fallen leaves and debris to keep the spores from being redeposited into the soil. » It’s also a banner year for bugs. We encourage you to bring us samples if you have a problem, but please try to find the culprit on your plant. It’s very hard for us to tell you what to use if all we have to go by is a leaf with holes in it. Many insects may be effectively treated with insecticidal soap, but others will require something stronger. Plants that are particularly susceptible may need a systemic product. Caterpillars require their own kind of treatment. Sometimes what you think is insect damage is actually fungal. It isn’t always easy to diagnose! » If you want/need to plant things in your yard, you still can. Some plants (crape myrtles, grasses, perennials) prefer to go in while the soil is nice and warm.

Others will tolerate it if you are religious about watering, and I don’t mean with a sprinkler! Drip systems or hand watering is crucial, especially if Mother Nature gets stingy with the rain again. » Did you plant a vegetable garden this year? How is it doing? If it is going well, share your produce with friends or a food bank! If it isn’t, make notes for next year. Here are the biggest problems I am seeing. 1. Sometimes people don’t realize they need to “rotate” their crops or replace their soil. I know that sounds silly when you’re doing containers or raised beds, but it is critical. 2. Sometimes folks use a sprinkler to water their garden, which is seldom a good idea. Drip irrigation is a better option. 3. Some of you start out with good weeding and working habits, but then it gets hot! Or you go on vacation and the weeds, insects, and diseases take over. It’s ok. Life is a learning process. Come talk to us before you start your fall veggies or before you give up! » Speaking of fall vegetables, you can sow seeds for bush beans, carrots, peas, and greens this month. You can also plant broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. » Keep fertilizing annuals and container plants to keep them looking pretty. You also need to do weekly deadheading and pruning to keep them from getting scraggly and leggy. If they are beyond hope, compost them and plant fresh ones! » Late August is a good time to put a final dose of HollyTone on acid loving plants and RoseTone (or HollyTone) on roses. This will give the resulting new growth time to harden off before we get close to frost season. » Keep weeding, and reapply Preen if it has been three months since you last applied it. Do not apply Preen or any other pre-emergent before sowing seeds, however! It keeps all seeds from germinating, not just weeds. » Keep birdbaths and feeders clean and full as our feathered friends prepare for fall migration. If you are having a problem with squirrels, try using one of the “hot” seeds. These have been treated with hot pepper sauce. Birds do not taste it, but squirrels do! You may also want to experiment with different types of feeders and feed to see what gets the most songbirds. We recommend Cole’s birdseed. That’s all for this month. Please let us know if you have questions!

Random Acts of Flowers Celebrates 75,000th Delivery in Knoxville

R

ANDOM ACTS OF FLOWERS

(RAF) is celebrating a big milestone this summer! On July 18th, the flagship branch of RAF in Knoxville delivered its 75,000th bouquet to a recipient at Parkwest Hospital. Longtime volunteer liaison, Rita Stroud, was very excited to be a part of this special delivery. “I remember we had 25 bud vases to give out for the first delivery at Parkwest Hospital back in 2009,” she said. “Immediately it was such a blessing. Every recipient is genuinely surprised and excited when we come into their room with a beautiful arrangement. I absolutely love it, and I am so happy to be the liaison at Parkwest.” RAF volunteers Rena McAlister and Andrea Murphy join Stroud each month for the delivery. “Early in 2009, I read an article about a new volunteer outreach program called Random Acts of Flowers,” said McAlister. “Little did I know I would receive so much joy, fun, and satisfaction for giving just a few hours of my time each week.” Murphy, a volunteer since November 2010, added, “I want my son to realize it

really takes little effort to positively impact someone’s day when you give just a little love and kindness. It just takes small gestures, time, and a desire to leave a lasting impression.” Random Acts of Flowers began when founder, Larsen Jay, used a personal experience to inspire a simple yet generous mission. After a near-fatal accident, Jay was amazed by the amount of support and encouragement he received as his hospital room filled with beautiful flowers. He soon realized that several of his fellow patients didn’t receive visitors or flowers, and it became his personal mission to share the floral encouragement he had received. The bouquets he shared with other patients that fateful day serve as the inspiration behind RAF’s mission to improve the emotional health and well-being of individuals in health care facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. “For more than nine years, the dedicated team at Random Acts of Flowers have focused on the simplicity of kindness, compassion, and the delivery of hope,” said Jay. “We find great comfort in knowing that the emotional impact of every recycled bouquet delivered in a healthcare facility has a

ripple-effect far beyond the recipient. This significant milestone serves as an ongoing testament to the volunteer spirit and the generosity behind all who support the Random Acts of Flowers’ mission.” Since launching in 2009, the organization has provided personal moments of hope and kindness to more than 225,000 individuals and has recycled more than 250,000 vases nationwide. (Additional branches operate in Chicago, Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, and Silicon Valley.) To find out how you can get involved, visit www.rafknoxville.org. Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country.

Rediscover Historic Rugby on the Cumberland Plateau

ISTORIC RUGBY,

founded in 1880, is an intriguing British village of rare historic integrity. It’s just 70 miles from Knoxville, but many have yet to discover it. Take the pleasant hour-and-a-quarter drive north to State Scenic Hwy 52, and you’ll find what the National Trust for Historic Preservation calls “one of the most authentically preserved rural villages in America,” set amid the natural beauty of the Cumberland Plateau, along with a 125-year story of dedicated community restoration and preservation. Begin at the Rugby Visitor Centre & Theatre with the national award-winning film, The Power of a Dream. A guide will take you into the 1882 Thomas Hughes Library, the oldest fully preserved and intact free public library in America; 1884 Kingstone Lisle, the founder’s home, with furnishings made or brought by Rugby’s early colonists; Christ Church Episcopal, a Carpenter Gothic gem where services have been held continuously since 1887; and the exhibit-filled 1907 schoolhouse. The reconstructed Rugby Commissary features Rugby and area history materials, regionally made arts and crafts, and an array of Appalachian and British Isles products. Several privately operated artisan shops are nearby. The Harrow Road Café is open daily serving Cumberland Plateau home cooking and British Isles specialties. Visitors can lodge at restored 1880 Newbury House and Pioneer Cottage. Trails built by the colonists in 1880 still wind down to the free-flowing Clear Fork River, where you can take a dip in the Gentlemen’s Swimming Hole. Or, take the Massengale Homeplace loop trail in the new 710-acre Rugby State Natural Area. Historic Rugby’s next door neighbor is the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, with hundreds of miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horse trails. How did Rugby come to be founded in such a remote area in 1880? Like many towns and communities, it owes its location to a railroad. In 1878, land speculators began staking claims to thousands of acres on the northern Cumberland Plateau along the new Cincinnati Southern Railway line. Among them was industrialist and idealist Franklin W. Smith. His Boston-based “Board of Aid to Land Ownership” planned to relocate unemployed factory workers from the Northeast to the fresh air and forests of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, where they could engage in agriculture. But as the industrial depression eased, Smith looked for another investor. Enter famous British author, social reformer, and statesman Thomas Hughes. Known and beloved worldwide as the author 56

of the semi-autobiographical young people’s classic Tom Brown’s Schooldays, Hughes also achieved prominence as a strong proponent of Christian Socialism, the cooperative movement and trade unionism in Britain, and as champion of the Union cause during America’s Civil War. While on a speaking tour in the early 1870s, Hughes was fascinated by what he saw in America. Especially intriguing to him were the possibilities that its vast, undeveloped land might hold for citizens of his own increasingly crowded country, and he became convinced that “emigration to America, under the right circumstances,” was the best course for many of his countrymen. Long a champion of Britain’s working classes, Hughes was also concerned about the plight of younger sons of Britain’s upper class families. By tradition they did not inherit but were nevertheless expected to “live like gentlemen rather that engage in a trade or profession that was beneath them.” When Rugby officially opened in 1880, Hughes intended it to be a class-free, agricultural community based on cooperative enterprise, cultural opportunity, religious freedom, and temperance. “Our settlement is open,” he declared, “to all who like our principles and our ways.” During its first decade, hundreds of people emigrated from the British Isles to Rugby and from other parts of America. Some stayed only briefly, some for years, and some for life. More than 60 cottages, villas, commercial, and institutional buildings of distinctive, rural Victorian styles were constructed during Rugby’s first decade. Rugby seemed to be thriving and achieving Hughes’ hope of a “class-free, cultured society willing to work with their hands.” Rugby never sustained many of Hughes’ idealistic goals for many reasons. Emigration slowly ceased, but it was never a ghost town. By 1900, some 125 people still lived in the Rugby area, though the mix was more Appalachian then British. Fortunately for future generations, some were determined

to preserve the village and its heritage. From the 1920s through the 1950s, children of original colonists and others lovingly cared for Rugby’s public buildings, river gorge trails, and historic cemetery. Extensive media attention was paid to the need to restore and preserve Rugby. Then, in the mid-1960s, a 16-year-old boy from nearby Deer Lodge resolved to begin what others had dreamed of – the permanent restoration and preservation of the entire village and its history. With help from area residents and people across Tennessee, Brian Stagg formed non-profit Historic Rugby in 1966 to begin restoring and preserving the village and interpreting its history to the public. In 1972, the entire Rugby village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today 12 buildings have been restored or historically reconstructed by Historic Rugby, private homes have been restored, and nearly 1,000 acres of woodland and streams permanently conserved. The community is growing again as people buy protected building lots in Beacon Hill and Boyle Woods, part of the 1880 town plan, and build historically compatible homes. Historic Rugby facilities and trails are open daily. For directions, hours, and information about events and activities, visit www. historicrugby.org. For lodging reservations, group visits, building lot details, and other information, call 1-888-214-3400. Rugby remains a utopia in the wilderness, a memorial to mankind’s eternal desire to form a more perfect way of life. Your visits help continue the Rugby story. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

(McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present the 17th “Arts in the Airport” exhibition, a new selection of artwork from 41 artists in the East Tennessee region. “Arts in the Airport” was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork is exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint now through October 18. Juror Terri Jordan of the Customs House Museum in Clarksville provided this statement about the exhibition: “Tennessee boasts a large talent of artists, and as a museum curator, I find many of these come from the Eastern part of the state. I was pleased with the variety of mediums in the entries I viewed. It is important to not just master the technical skills, but to also create work that has a strong composition, a story behind it or about it, and a sense of ‘holding its own’ in situation. For me, the entries I chose do that. They all have great sense of harmony in color and design and leave me wanting to see more.” The following artists’ works are on display: Debra Lovvorn Belvin, J. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen) and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. You can reshape your body! We will develop a customized CoolSculpting® treatment plan that addresses your problem areas. Additional sessions may further enhance your results. Your individualized treatment plan will be tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. It’s easy to sit back, relax, and say goodbye to stubborn fat. After we select the area(s) to be treated, the device is positioned on your body, and controlled cooling is applied. During your procedure, you may choose to read, check email, or even take a nap. CoolSculpting® fat reduction procedure is specifically designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting® procedure is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however, a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Request a one-on-one consultation with us to determine if the CoolSculpting® procedure is right for you. » How much does the CoolSculpting® procedure cost? The price for CoolSculpting® procedures vary depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals. We will help create a customized treatment plan, in person, that’s tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. » How long is each session? How many sessions will I need? We will help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of your CoolSculpting® session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. We may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals. » Where does the fat go? Are the results permanent? Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), your body processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. » What does it feel like? As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment. » Is the CoolSculpting® procedure safe? The CoolSculpting® procedure is FDAcleared for the flank (love handles), abdomen, and thigh. With more than four million CoolSculpting® treatments performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. » Are there any side effects? During the procedure, you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness, or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, and pain. Rare side effects

may also occur. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting® procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask us if the CoolSculpting® procedure is right for you. » Can I return to normal activities after my treatment? Yes, you can. The CoolSculpting® procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Oftentimes patients return to work after their CoolSculpting® session is finished. » When will I see results? You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment. » Do I need to take special supplements or follow a strict diet and exercise program? No supplements or pills are required, and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. Many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after their CoolSculpting® treatment. It is as if they get a second lease on their body, and they want to start anew again by taking even better care of themselves. » What happens if I gain weight down the road? After seeing the results, many people take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas. For answers to all of your CoolSculpting® questions or to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation, call Pamela Gott Gavin, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, at 865-789-3162 or visit www.faceplaceknoxville.com. Economic Expectations Versus Reality B Y TO M I R M E N

CCORDING

THE

NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) Index, small business optimism has continued at historically high levels now for more than six consecutive months. NFIB President and CEO, Juanita Duggan, said that this “remarkable surge in optimism that began last year right after the election shows no sign of slowing down.” But indexes, like sentiment, can be disappointing to small business owners who were hoping for a “quick fix” to the economic doldrums that our economy has been languishing in for the past decade or so. Not to say that there hasn’t been bright spots, because there has been. But just where is the growth that entrepreneurs had grown accustomed to after prior recessions? Today entrepreneurs need to balance expectations with reality. Much of the positive economic news being reported on today is forward looking. Knox County teachers selected for the Tennessee Educator Fellowship, Lindsay Davis looks forward to advocating for the students she teaches at Austin-East Magnet High School. “This fellowship is such a great honor,” said Davis, who teaches math. “I look forward to being a voice for my students. This is an opportunity to meet with educators from across the state to discuss issues surrounding education and also to dialogue with legislators to advocate for our students. This fellowship is an opportunity to learn and educate.” Davis has been teaching for 12 years, four of them at Austin-East. “I have wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten,” she said. “I have never thought about doing anything else. Teaching has always been my passion. I love working with students and sharing my passion for math with them.” Davis earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with a minor in theatre, from Montana State University. Recently she completed her master’s degree in secondary mathematics education 64

from Western Governors University. While there’s no such thing as a typical day in education, most of Davis’ days include two math courses each semester, plus her responsibilities as Freshman Dean. “This role includes many meetings with teachers, administrators, and students,” she said. “I check in with students and monitor their grades to ensure students are passing their classes. I tutor kids who struggle or need extra help. I also run multiple meetings with our awesome freshman teachers.” Davis is eager to make the Knoxville community aware of the accomplishments of her students at Austin-East. “What breaks my heart is that most of Knoxville has no idea how amazing this school is, nor do they know about the brilliant things that our students do,” she said. “On most occasions, the only exposure that the residents of Knox County have to AustinEast is when a news story includes it as a reference point to a crime that has occurred. My struggle is with the misconstrued

There are so many things that I love about my job, but my students are definitely the best part.” perceptions that Knoxville residents have of AE and its students. I’m constantly having to educate people on what is really happening between the walls of our school. There is so much undeserved negative media coverage that taints people’s perceptions of a place they have never set foot in, because I guarantee that if they did, they would be amazed at what our students do!” Austin-East students definitely have an advocate in Davis, though. “There are so many things that I love about my job, but my students are definitely the best part,” she said. “I love watching the light bulb go off as a student gets a concept for the first time. I could go on and on about how amazing my students are, but really what I love is being part of their story and walking through their high school years (and beyond) with them.”

Being Financially Savvy is a Family Business B Y J O H N FAWA Z , C H F C ™ , C D FA ™ , C F P ®

IKE IT OR NOT, we’re all involved in running the “family business.” We worry that our parents might outlive their retirement savings. We’re John Fawaz comforted by the thought that CERTIFIED family members might assist us FINANCIAL PLANNER™ financially if we experience money problems. And we hope to provide our children with a portion of our retirement nest egg when we pass. So how savvy is your family business plan? Remember, no plan is a plan, but it’s a plan destined to fail. Here are just some of the reasons why you should act: Raising children If your children grow up to be less responsible financially, you might feel obligated to come to the rescue. Children can become a financial liability. Because you don’t want your adult children swimming in credit card debt and missing mortgage payments, make sure these types of problems never arise by raising money-savvy children. But that’s more of a challenge than you might imagine. Children grow up spending their parents’ money and have a totally different perspective on finances. For children, all purchases appear free, so they are less concerned about the costs of the items or the need to control their desires. Help your children feel that they are spending their own money. Provide them a candy allowance while they’re young and a clothing allowance as teenagers, and insist that they live within this budget. This way, instead of you constantly saying “no” to your children, they will learn to say “no” to themselves. Launching adults Once your children enter the workforce, encourage them to initiate a “virtuous financial cycle,” where they build wealth for their own futures. This will enable them to own their home rather than renting, buy their cars rather than leasing, fully fund their 401(k) plan and their individual retirement accounts, and never carry a credit card balance. The sooner your 20-something children get into this virtuous financial cycle, the easier it will be for them to meet their own goals and the less likely they will be to remain financially dependent on you. Encourage your children with both your words and actions. For more information about how you can be financially savvy in your family, contact us at 865558-8182.

Aging Parents and Memory Loss B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

ITH PEOPLE LIVING

to be older than ever, it is common for adult children to find themselves helping their elderly parents through the aging process. One of the more difficult things to face is realizing that a parent is experiencing memory loss. How you interact and behave with your parent who is experiencing memory loss can have a positive result on them. Here are some things you can do to help someone you love who is experiencing mild memory loss. Living Alone If your parent lives alone, you should stop by and check on him or her each day to make sure they are safe. You should alert neighbors to what is going on so they can contact you if they see anything unusual going on with your parent. Misplaced Items If your parent is routinely misplacing things, purchase a brightly colored basket, or other container, and place it in a noticeable location. Tell your parent this is where to put things such as keys, cell phone, watch,

wallet, purse, reading glasses, and other dayto-day things. Remembering the Day of the Week To help parents who are having trouble remembering what day of the week it is, put a note on their dresser, bathroom mirror, or the refrigerator to help remind them what day of the week it is, as well as other important things for the day. For instance, you might write down “Today is Sunday. You should call your sister, Natalie, today to tell her happy birthday. She is turning 67 years old today.” Remembering Medication It can be hard for individuals who are experiencing memory loss to remember to take their medication. If you discover that your parent is forgetting to take their medicine, set a timer to go off when they should take it. Put a note and their medicine by the timer so when they go to turn the timer off, they will be reminded that it is time to take their medicine. Advice for Friends and Family Tell friends and family to not take it personal if your parent forgets important

events. Tell young children that their grandparent is having trouble remembering things and that they should go out of their way to be helpful and to not laugh if their grandparent forgets something they think is silly to forget – such as what day it is or if they have eaten. If Memory Loss Increases If you notice signs that your aging parent is experiencing memory loss to a great degree, you should take him or her to the doctor. The doctor will check your parent for Alzheimer’s disease and/or other cognitive impairments. If something is discovered, you will be advised as to what to expect and the steps both you and your parent can take to work with the disease or impairment. I Wish We Would Notice More

LADY and a gentleman notice.

What kinds of things do they notice? Well, perhaps they might notice: » A little old lady or man standing behind us in the post office line, struggling to stand in the long line. Wonder if we could change places with them? » A mother with three kids trying to carry luggage, kids, and stuff, getting on an airplane. Wonder if we could help her carry something? » A homeless man or lady, regardless of whose fault it is that they’re homeless, who is standing outside a store on a hot day. Wonder if we could buy a cold bottle of 66

water and give it to him or her? » A person walking towards us with their heads down, looking a bit unhappy or concerned about something. Wonder if we could make eye contact, smile, and say, “Hello there. I hope you have a good day?” » The clerk at a store that looks tired and is faking a smile. Wonder if we could start a conversation with them, helping them to know that people really do care? » Our own child, making comments like, “Mom, I wish you could play with me” or “Dad, do you think you will have time to play after your important work?” Wonder if we could recognize the unspoken feelings of loneliness and need for attention?

Ladies and gentlemen, it is so very easy to get caught up in our own needs, responsibilities, and obligations. But here’s the deal. If we’re too busy to do the most important things, then we’re too busy. If we’re too busy to stop and serve others, then we’re too busy. Surely we can all see that at the end of the day, and even at the end of our lives, all that will really matter is who we have helped.

Teens & Acne

IGH SCHOOL can be the best time of a child’s life. In the classroom, on the stage, or on the field – there

are plenty of opportunities to develop new interests, spend time with friends, and make lasting memories. However, many students struggle to enjoy these moments, because they’re worried about how they look due to the outbreak of acne. Clear skin is often a challenge for students, but the doctor and specialists at Southeastern Dermatology offer many services to help teens overcome acne and reveal a confident, beautiful face. While acne is predominantly a disease of adolescence, it often persists into adulthood. It is important to treat significant acne to prevent emotional as well as physical scars. What causes acne? There are many contributing factors that cause acne, including bacteria, hormones, inflammation, and clogged pores. Excess oil production, which is often the result of hormonal stimulation, combines with naturally occurring bacteria, resulting in inflammation that can clog the pores. The end result of this process is the eruption of a blemish. Types of acne When most people think of acne, they think of big red pimples. However, there are several types of blemishes that a person with acne may have to address, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, and cysts/ nodules. Each of these kinds of blemishes responds differently to various treatments; therefore, it’s important to work with a trained specialist in order to properly address your acne situation. Acne treatment There are several approaches to treating acne. The one that’s recommended to you, or to your child, will depend on his/her unique situation. However, there are some common treatments: » Topical treatments: Topical acne treatments are those preparations that are applied to the skin. They may be in the form of a special wash, cream, or gel. They may work to kill bacteria, decrease the inflammation, or to dry the excess oil. Common topical treatments

skin’s appearance. These peels are safe and effective for use on teens and young adults. Photomodulation, also known as light treatments, may help as well. Something to keep in mind: Unlike what you may see on TV infomercials, results take time. These commercials do a disservice in that they promote unrealistic expectations. If your acne is severe or not responding to over-the-counter remedies, call board certified dermatologist, Dr. Matthew Doppelt, at Southeastern Dermatology today to schedule your appointment.

include benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, retinoids, and salicylic acid. » Oral medications: Some acne cases require medication delivered in the form of a pill. For example, antibiotics can eliminate bacteria and minimize inflammation, while other medications work to balance hormones within the body. » Dermatology procedures: There are several dermatology procedures that can also help to clear up the individual’s skin. For example, a specialized chemical peel can remove the top layer of badly damaged skin while reducing oil and improving the
