When Brian complained to a group of friends about the poor quality car wash he had received from a local vendor, they encouraged him to start his own car wash. EK: Describe the reputation you have developed for launching innovative new businesses. Brian: Interestingly, the companies we have launched actually target industries that many people might describe as mature. But even a mature market can experience above average growth when improvements are made in the way you deliver your company’s goods, products, or services to your customers. EK: Give me an example. Brian: Synergy Auto Wash. Close your eyes and throw a rock and you’ll likely hit a car wash. Most car washes focus on cleaning as many cars as quickly as possible – sort of a one-size-fits-all 6

approach. Unfortunately, most high volume washes underperform customer expectations. Although using state-of-the-art technology, Synergy Auto Wash relies on humans to target areas on your automobile that many other washes miss altogether. We focus on performance that exceeds customers’ expectations without using the type of automated equipment that comes into contact with your car’s surface, which can actually damage your vehicle’s surfaces. EK: Tell us how Synergy Spray Foam Insulation came about. Brian: What most of your readers may not know is that I have been a custom home builder and developer for more than a decade. Construction is a fascinating marketplace made even more interesting by the technological advancements taking place on an almost daily basis. Today we can build homes more efficiently that require far less maintenance and that enhance the individual lifestyles of its owners. Open and closed cell foam insulation is one of those technologies whose time has come. EK: Tell our readers about spray foam insulation. Brian: Insulation is one of the most critical components in home construction today, and rapidly rising energy costs are making insulation even more important. For decades, homeowners have relied principally on fiberglass batt and blown insulation. Due largely to continually increasing energy prices, this conventional form of insulation has reached its optimum performance levels. Spray foam insulation, on the other hand, is far superior by comparison and outperforms fiberglass insulation hands down. EK: What should homeowners know about spray foam insulation? Brian: Think of the exterior surfaces of your home as an envelope. The better insulated the envelope is, the lower your energy bills and the more comfortable your home will be. R-values per inch of insulation when compared to fiberglass insulation. But what is even more important is spray foam’s ability to minimize air infiltration, exfiltration, convection, and conduction. Fiberglass insulation performs far less efficiently in these critical areas. EK: Explain your decision to launch Synergy Spray Foam Insulation. Brian: As a general contractor and custom home builder and remodeler, I have watched the development of the spray foam insulation marketplace with great interest. I’ve become convinced of its superior performance characteristics. One thing I liked in particular about homes utilizing spray foam insulation is the uniformity in temperature you will experience throughout your home. Homes insulated with fiberglass insulation, on the other hand, typically experience large disparities in temperatures between interior and exterior rooms. EK: Tell us about Synergy Spray Foam Insulation. Brian: We decided to utilize our expertise as custom home builders to enhance the installation of our spray foam insulation. Who knows or understands the unique nature of protecting your home’s envelope better than a builder? We made a significant investment in the very best application equipment and technology available today and selected the best open and closed cell insulation materials available from industry leader and wholly U.S. owned Johns Manville Corporation.

EK: What about cost? Brian: Spray foam insulation is more expensive than conventional fiberglass insulation, but most homeowners will recover this additional investment within three to seven years with the increased energy savings you will experience. EK: Where can spray foam insulation be applied? Brian: In new construction, it can be applied to any area where conventional insulation is used. In existing homes, spray foam insulation can be used in the attic or in walls when a major renovation is taking place. One area of new or existing home construction where spray foam insulation performs best is in your home’s attic. Because up to 70% of home energy loss occurs through your ceiling, spray foam insulation can help to provide the energy saving envelope that offers significant energy savings. EK: How is Synergy Spray Foam Insulation applied in the attics of new or existing homes? Brian: The spray foam insulation is applied to the bottom of the roof deck of a new or existing home, providing a totally conditioned space. The attic space is now protected from most of the hot or cold air that previously infiltrated into this space. This significantly reduces the energy required to heat and cool your home. This type of insulation is even more critical if your home has an HVAC unit in this same attic area, where your HVAC system is trying to produce 55 degree air to cool your home but where air temperatures surrounding the unit can exceed 120 degrees during the day. Double Dogs Chow House Opens Second Location in Knoxville

During a pre-grand opening celebration, Davis presented a $2,000 check to the Humane Society and a $500 check to the K9 unit. “We are proud to support both of these organizations,” said Davis. “It is important for us to support our local community, and we are thankful for this opportunity.” Officer Jason Cunningham and his canine, Grek, were also recognized for their hard work and dedication. Grek joined the pack as an honorary member of the Double Dogs Chow House. Hours of operation are 11 am to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and 11 am to 1 am Thursday through Saturday. OUBLE DOGS CHOW HOUSE, a family-friendly restaurant with a sports atmosphere, recently celebrated its grand opening of its second location in Knoxville at 8910 Kingston Pike. Guests were entertained by the 36 television screens while enjoying signature menu items, including the Bo Burger, Dog Bowl Nachos, hand-breaded chicken fingers, traditional chicken wings with a wide variety of tossing sauces, pizza, and more. “We are so excited to have opened our second location in Knoxville,” said Daniel Davis, founder of Double Dogs. “We are committed to creating a positive and unique dining experience for our customers, providing superior customer service, and a menu of mouth-watering food and drink options.” Dogs have always held a special place in Davis’ heart. Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival

H E 8 T H A N N UA L Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival will be held on Saturday, August 25, from 8 am to 2 pm at Ijams Nature Center. Visitors have the opportunity to see ruby-throated hummingbirds up close at a banding demonstration by Mark Armstrong, a certified Master Bander. Banding demonstrations will take place between 8 and 11:30 am. However, banding is weather dependent and may end earlier if hummingbirds can’t be captured. The Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival began as a joint effort between Ijams and the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. The event features speakers on nature topics, wildlife educational demon-

strations, and vendors selling food and drinks, plants, locally made arts and crafts, bird feeders and supplies, and garden items. But the main highlight of this event is the opportunity for visitors to get close to ruby-throated hummingbirds and learn about them during the banding demonstrations. Hummingbirds are harmlessly captured, weighed, measured, and banded before being sent on their way. Banding provides a way to document hummingbird movement during migration. August and September are busy migration months in Tennessee with thousands of hummingbirds moving south on their way to wintering grounds in Central America and Southern Mexico. Parking for this event will take place in all

Ijams Nature Center parking lots. Visitors also can park at Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area (3140 McClure Lane) and take a shuttle to the event. Please note that we do not allow dogs at the Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival. Although dogs are welcome at many of our events, the Hummingbird Festival is not a good fit since all of the speakers and the children’s crafts are indoors (where dogs are not allowed), and dogs are not allowed at the banding station. Tickets are $7 for ages 12 and up, $3 for children ages 5-11, and free for children 4 and under. Family passes for parents plus children are available for $20. Butterfly Dash and Burger Bash The Jaystorm Project

This event is fun for the whole family! There will be live music all day by The Jaystorm Project, The Coveralls, and Soulfinger. There will be a lot of children’s activities for kids of all ages to participate in. Burger Bash tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 4-12, and free for children 3 and under. Admission allows you to sample three of Knoxville’s unique sliders and listen to live music. Cold beverages, including soft drinks, water, and beer, will be for sale. VIP Burger Bash tickets are available for $100 and include entry into festival and sampling privileges, complimentary beverages (beer and wine) inside VIP tent, air conditioning, and access to catered food.

In the Footsteps of Sergeant York, A Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History, Extended Through August 26th

U E T O T H E over whelming response f rom t he public, t he Museum of East Tennessee History is extending the very popular exhibition, In the Footsteps of Sergeant York, through August 26th. If you haven’t experienced life in the trenches, now is your chance to see the traveling exhibition from the Museum of the American Military Experience, showcasing groundbreaking York research and allowing visitors to retrace the steps of one of America’s best-known military heroes. The exhibition will also be on display for the East Tennessee History Fair on Saturday, August 18, which will feature World War I Living History, a WWI vintage baseball game of Army vs. Navy at the historic Bill Meyer field, and tours of the old Knoxville High and “Doughboy” statue. About In the Footsteps of Sergeant York Between 2006 and 2009, an international team of historians, archeologists, and geographers traveled to the Western Front battlefields of World War I to rediscover and document where Fentress County-native Sergeant Alvin C. York made his heroic stand against overwhelming odds and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage under fire. Sergeant York is one of the most decorated and colorful soldiers of World War I. He was born of humble beginnings in Pall Mall as the third of 11 children and raised in a one-room log cabin. Nearly 100 years ago, on October 8, 1918, York displayed valor and courage worthy of a Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur, and later, a major motion picture, when he single-handedly killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 more in a battle in the Argonne Forest in France. Until now, the movie Sergeant York, staring Gary Cooper, has provided the most compelling story of York. The exhibition, produced by the Museum of the American Military Experience, includes 18 exhibit panels, eight exhibit cases of artifacts, a documentary film, and a supporting interactive website. The East Tennessee 12

Historical Society augmented the exhibition with East Tennessee stories and artifacts. It includes a bible carried by Sgt. York during WWI and later carried by a friend’s son who had it with him in WWII and every day until he died at the age of 94, as well as examples of American and German gas masks, U.S. uniforms, medals, banners, firearms, and wartime souvenirs. One of the most compelling features of the exhibit is that visitors are invited to walk through a life-sized trench much like the ones American troops hunkered down in during the war. Museum visitors will develop a sense of York’s home life through a sampling of items from the York home, experience the sounds of war and machine gun fire, view clips from the famous movie portraying Sergeant York’s life, and take away a copy of his draft card, where he claims his exemption from the draft is that he “don’t want to fight.” About East Tennessee Historical Society Established in 1834, the East Tennessee Historical Society is widely acknowledged as one of the most active history organizations in the state and enjoys a national reputation for excellence in programming and education. For 184 years, the East Tennessee Historical Society has been helping East Tennesseans hold on to our unique heritage, recording the events, collecting the artifacts, and saving the stories that comprise the history we all share. The Museum of East Tennessee History is

HERE’S REALLY no better way to learn about a company than to speak with their customers. Recently Everything Knoxville had the opportunity to interview recent European Fine Hardwood Floors customer, Rebecca A. of Knoxville. Ingredients: » 3 (1-inch thick) slices whole grain rustic bread » 3 (1-inch thick) slices of red onion » 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil » 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt » 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper » 3/4 cup red California grapes » 3/4 cup green California grapes » 1 cup roughly chopped radicchio » 1 cup large-dice English cucumber » 1/4 cup chopped pistachios » 2 ounces goat cheese, crumbled

Dressing » 2 tablespoons olive oil » 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar » 1 tablespoon orange juice » 1 teaspoon orange zest » 1 teaspoon honey » 1/2 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard » 2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon » 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley » 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt » 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Directions: In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, vinegar, juice, zest, honey, mustard, tarragon, parsley, salt, and pepper. Set aside. Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high. Using a brush, lightly coat the bread and onion slices with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Place the onion slices on the grill. Cover and cook until charred, about 4 minutes, then flip and cook, covered, for another 2-3 minutes. Set aside. Grill the bread for 3 minutes or until toasted. Flip and grill another minute. Set aside. Roughly chop the grilled onions and the bread into 1” square pieces. In a large bowl, combine the onions, bread, grapes, radicchio, cucumber, and pistachios. Add the salad dressing and gently toss to combine. Divide the salad into 6 equal servings and top each with goat cheese. Grilled Flank Steak with Southwest Corn and Grape Salad Prep/marinade time: 25 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: Serves 4

Ingredients: » 1 1/4 pounds trimmed flank steak » 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided » 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin » 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander » Freshly ground pepper to taste » 3/4 cup corn kernels, either freshly cut off the cob or thawed, frozen corn kernels » 1/2 avocado, diced » 3/4 cup red California grapes, halved » 1/2 cup green California grapes, halved » 1 tablespoon chopped shallot » 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil » 2 tablespoons lime juice » 1/2 teaspoon lime zest » 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (optional) Directions: Pat the steak dry. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 teaspoon salt, cumin, coriander, and freshly ground pepper. Rub the mixture onto both sides of the steak and let stand for 15 minutes. Place the steak on a medium-high grill and cook it for 5 minutes on one side without moving it. Flip the steak and cook for another 4-5 minutes for medium-rare or until desired doneness is achieved. Transfer the steak to a cutting board, cover loosely with aluminum foil, and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. While the steak is resting, combine the corn, avocado, grapes, shallot, olive oil, lime juice, lime zest, the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste; mix gently. Cut the steak diagonally across the grain into 1/4-inch thick slices. Arrange the steak slices on a serving platter or among four plates and top with corn and grape salad. Garnish with cilantro. Nutritional analysis per serving: Calories 390, Protein 41g, Carbohydrate 17g, Fat 18g (42% Calories from Fat), Saturated Fat 6g (13% Calories from Saturated Fat), Cholesterol 110mg, Sodium 160mg, Fiber 3g.

Butterfly Festival

VERYONE INTERESTED in both butterflies and beautiful landscapes is invited to attend the Butterfly Festival hosted by the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society. The family-friendly event is scheduled for Saturday, August 4, from 10 am to 1 pm. This event will host various speakers and activities for adults and children. Monarch butterflies will be released at noon from the patio and yard outside the auditorium. Butterflies are available for

EXT MONTH will be 15 years

since the world lost the great Johnny Cash. Cash was brash, creative, and even bleeding edge in his approach to music and performing. If you have ever wondered: “What if he were young and alive today?” “What if he were writing and performing music today?” The answers to those questions just may be in the person of his eldest grandchild, Thomas Gabriel. It was because of Long Way Home and coordinating with his label, Cashtown Records, and his publicist team at Blue Moon Experience Group that I had the privilege of speaking with Thomas by phone at his Middle Tennessee home. Because his name isn’t yet a household name, Thomas gave me the Reader’s Digest version of his story. “I’m the oldest grandchild of Johnny Cash,” he said. “I’m originally from Ventura, California, and moved to the Nashville area when I was young. My mother was extremely young when she had me, so I spent a lot of time with my grandparents; I spent a lot of time on the road and in motels, hotels, buses, and planes - that sort of thing. I called it ‘The Fish Bowl’ growing up. We were in the bowl looking out to see all these faces every time we pulled into a new city. That’s where I started. “I got into music early on. In the early ‘90s, I was working on some projects and felt pretty good about it, actually. I had a pretty good EP together. I played it for my grandpa, and he said he liked what he heard, but because of that, he wanted me to have a backup plan - go

finish school or get a job or whatever - in case it falls through. He said, ‘I don’t want you to put everything into music quite yet. You’re too young.’ “I had just turned 21, and he said he wanted me to go to the police academy. So I went to the police academy. I was a police officer for just less than eight years. During that time, I always had addiction problems like my grandfather did. Same chemicals. Same type of addictions. Pills got involved, and that caused some series of events that led to me having to resign. Soon after I started building an arrest record that got to be pretty lengthy pretty quick. The next thing you know, I also did about seven-and-a-half years in prison. About the same amount of time that I was a police officer, I was in prison! “While I was in prison, I worked on music again. It was the first time in a while that I had a clear enough head to sit down and really start putting my time and efforts back into that. It’s a God thing that that happened. “When I got out, I immediately started working on the projects that I had started in prison. That was in 2013 when I got out, so it’s been about five years now. When I got out, I still had some chemical issues, but I went to a rehab facility. After I was clean a year, Brian Oxley, the executive producer of the album, called me up and said, ‘Hey, you’ve been clean a year. You’ve had time to get your stuff together. Are you ready to hit this fullforce?’ I said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ So we’ve been doing it ever since.”

Thomas described his music. “I’ve tried to put a genre on what I do and what the music is. I’ve got a lot of influences. I’ve got country influence, obviously. I’ve got folk influence, obviously. Granddad didn’t even call himself a country artist. He called himself a folk artist. My album is a mix of rock with some Indie mixed in with some country mixed in with some – I don’t know. It’s just whatever I’m feelin’. “My big thing is, like I said, I want to get it all out. But also, because of my history and because of the things I’ve been through, the prison thing and the drug experiences and all that, I kinda see it as there are so many times that I should’ve been dead, that now it really is about what I can do for everybody else. If my album, my presence, my show, whatever helps a couple of people that are going through the same thing that I was stuck into for so long, that, right there, I think that God gave me that extra chance. Pretax contributions are tax-deductible now, but all withdrawals in retirement are taxed at ordinary income rates. (And who knows how high they will be!) Nondeductible aftertax contributions grow tax deferred, but the growth of the account is taxed when withdrawn. Nondeductible Roth contributions also grow tax deferred, but the growth of the account is also tax-free when withdrawn! We can all agree that tax-free Roth dollars are the “best” dollars in retirement, and here’s how you can accumulate more of them in your employer plan: In 2018, people over age 50 can add up to $24,500 in employee pretax and/or Roth contributions. Yet there is a second limit of $61,000 in total additions to your retirement accounts, including your employer contributions. Here’s an example: My 55-year-old client was maxing out his employee contribution of $24,500 and had an employer contribution of $4,500, so a total of $29,000 was added each year. He lamented the fact that he and his wife make too much money to contribute to a Roth IRA. But I pointed out to him that his 401(k) plan allows for aftertax contributions, too. He still had room to add another $32,000 before he hit the IRS limit of $61,000 in total annual additions. Why is this so important? The IRS has ruled that aftertax contributions can be rolled over to a Roth IRA, thus transforming not just the aftertax contributions, but all future growth of those contributions into a beautiful, tax-free asset. Viola! There are several aspects that have to be considered to build a successful strategy: (1) Your employer plan rules and restrictions, (2) the timing of the Roth rollover, (3) investment decisions before and after rollover, and (4) what the IRS defines as being eligible for rollover. Call for Entries: Arts in the Airport Exhibition

of Greater Knoxville and the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) announce a call for entries for the 20th Arts in the Airport, a juried exhibition developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. Approximately 40-45 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will comprise the exhibition in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint from October 25 through April 17, 2019. The deadline for entries to be received is Sunday, August 26. Prizes include at least $1,000 in cash awards. He is known for his success in helping to advance the careers of artists, placing them in private and corporate collections. He has curated hundreds of group and solo shows in a variety of media. Ahlers has collaborated with numerous museums to curate and facilitate traveling exhibitions. He has designed and implemented multiple gallery spaces with tremendous success. He has developed an eye for what is both interesting and marketable. Previously Ahlers worked at Blue Spiral 1, a large southeastern craft gallery from 1999-2017. As gallery director there, he earned a reputation for his knowledge, honesty, and thoughtful approach to the business of art. His newest venture, Momentum Gallery, opened in October 2017 and has already outgrown its space and plans to move into a new 15,000 square foot gallery later this year, making it the largest and most accessible fine art gallery in the region. What Builds Character in a Home?

you’d answer that question by rattling off characteristics like hardwood floors, deep baseboards, and cheerful front porches, but those are just a small part of the total equation. They can’t imbue a house with character any more than Prada shoes can make a boorish person elegant. “Character is more of an overall feeling produced by a house – a combination of emotional and physiological responses to the surroundings,” said designer/ builder Jenny Blalock. In short, it’s what makes a house feel like home. “We know what home feels like, but we don’t always know why, because most people can’t define the source of that feeling,” said Jenny. “They don’t know what to ask for when they’re designing a new home or renovating an existing one, and too often they’re disappointed with the results. In actuality, our response to a house is triggered by the way its designer shaped space, light, and order. We respond positively to certain features, such as spaces that are sheltered and repeated elements like shapes or colors, because our brains are wired to do so.” The designers of many older homes incorporated those elements into their designs, which is why we tend to think of older homes as having character. Nevertheless, Jenny doesn’t equate character with just age or style. Rather, she assists homeowners to incorporate and blend these characteristics into their own unique designs in order to create the feelings of comfort and belonging for their family members and guests. “Unfortunately, many newer homes miss that mark,” said Jenny. “They just don’t have any soul to them.” Homes became houses and started to lose their uniqueness and character when mass production reached the housing industry. RAF Knoxville Welcomes Emma Hayes

N THE FALL OF 2017, Emma

was searching for an internship when she learned about Random Acts of Flowers and the opportunities available for her. Having a passion for community outreach and promoting positive change, she jumped at the offer to become an intern for the following spring. That was only the beginning of Emma’s time with RAF Knoxville, because she instantly fell in love with the mission. Emma was so attracted to working with Random Acts of Flowers because of their dedication to delivering personal moments of hope and kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities. Her sister, Claire, battled leukemia for three years before her unfortunate passing, and Emma spent countless hours in East Tennessee Children’s Hospital with her. As a result, she highly values the act of brightening dismal situations with kindness and beauty. “The darkest days, the most hopeless moments, can be changed in just one instant – one moment of showing compassion where it may be lacking, of offering a smile under unhappy circumstances, and of instilling that these patients are important,” Emma said when asked why this seemingly

Emma will graduate in May 2019, and she plans to continue working with Random Acts of Flowers. She is in the process of planning her wedding to her fiancé, Eli, and of course she will be donating her wedding flowers to RAF. Random Acts of Flowers improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness.

probably ranks up there with February in the vote for least favorite month. It is hot and muggy, the weeds, bugs, and diseases have taken over your garden, and nobody wants to go outside. We are sometimes gifted with cooler temperatures or lovely mornings, however, so there are things that can be done in your yard. » Monitor ground moisture. Mother Nature has been very fickle with the rainfall. I can watch the radar and see this lovely band of rain headed our way, only to watch it split and go north and south of us. Err on the side of watering! Remember that sprinklers are for grass and flowers, not trees and shrubs. They simply cannot deliver an adequate amount of water. Trees and shrubs that have been planted in the last three years are especially vulnerable and will need hand watering any week that receives less than 1” of rainfall. » While you are watering, take a good look up, down, and all around. Look up to check tree canopies for broken, damaged, or stressed branches before they end up on

your house, car, or head! Look down for mole tunnels or vole holes. Look all around at plants to check for problems. » There are lots of bugs and lots of diseases out there. It will behoove you to keep an eye on your plants so that small problems don’t become insurmountable obstacles. Start with the least toxic products first, such as insecticidal soaps and horticultural oil. Some susceptible plants may require systemic products. As a side note, we are happy to help you diagnose a plant problem. Just snip off a piece of the problem area and bring it by in a plastic bag! I do encourage you to remember that not all bugs are bad bugs. Spiders may creep you out, but they do a wonderful job of getting rid of problem insects. The same is true for other creepy crawlies. Don’t get in a rush and kill the good guys! There is no such thing as a good fungus, so those will need to be treated. (Dog vomit fungus on your mulch is the exception. It doesn’t hurt anything.) Not only can those diseases wipe out your plants, but they can

also leave spores to overwinter in the soil and attack next year. Good hygiene is critical! Get those leaves up and/or pull out diseased plants. » Did you plant vegetables? How are they doing? Some of you have veggies coming out your eyeballs, and some of you have had a host of problems. Here are the main issues I am seeing: 1. Sporadic watering or sprinklers do more harm than good. Sprinklers set the stage for fungal diseases, and sporadic watering causes tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons to split. Regular drip irrigation or hand watering at the base of the plant is best. A layer of mulch (regular, straw, cardboard, burlap, etc.) will keep soil and moisture levels more stable. 2. You can’t plant the same plant in the same spot year after year. I know “crop rotating” sounds silly when you are talking about containers or raised beds, but it is critical. Fungal spores and diseases build up in the soil and nutrients get depleted. Move them around. 3. Flimsy little cages can’t support massive tomato plants, so save those for the patio type tomatoes. Buy substantial supports for the bigger ones or drive stakes or rebar through smaller cages to keep them upright. Once a 7’ tomato falls to the ground, it is hard to get it back up! 4. Blossom end rot is a common problem caused by a calcium deficiency and/or irregular watering. Put crushed eggshells in your planting hole or use a calcium spray and keep the moisture level stable. 5. If your plants got a blight, do not plant in the same area next year. 6. Over fertilizing with a high nitrogen fertilizer causes big ole’ green plants with no fruit. » Speaking of fertilizing, keep fertilizing annuals and container plants to keep them looking nice. Cut back scraggly plants or pull them out and replace them with fresh ones. Late August is also a good time to do a final dose of HollyTone on acid loving plants or RoseTone on your roses. » Keep weeding, and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent such as Preen every three months to keep weeds at bay. » Keep birdbaths and birdfeeders clean and filled as our feathered friends prepare for fall migration. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: The Castor Bean BY AMY DISMUKES, UT/ TSU E X TENSION, WILLIAMSON COUNT Y

HE CASTOR BEAN, Ricinus communis, a member of the spurge (Euphorbianceae) family, grown both for its flowers and dramatic foliage, is indigenous to the southeastern Mediterranean, Eastern Africa, and India, but the plant can be grown throughout the United States as an ornamental annual. The name Ricinus is Latin for tick, for which the seed is so named due to its markings and shape. The common name castor oil is thought to come from its use as an alternative to castoreum, a perfume base derived from the dried glands of the beaver (castor in Latin). Another common name is palm of Christ, or Palma Christi, which speaks to the plant’s castor oil derivative and its reputed ability to heal wounds and cure ailments. Other common names include mole killer plant and castor oil plant. It is said that the plants were grown in English gardens, beginning around the 16th century, as well as in Egypt, where the oils were utilized as an alternative to lamp oil. In the United States, castor bean plants were grown to produce castor oil, which was used in making soaps, linoleum, nylon, paints, and electrical insulations. It was also used to make a military grade aircraft lubricant and was a popular medicine in the first half of the 20th century. Because the oil itself does not contain ricin, the poison naturally found in castor beans, it has also found its way into the cosmetic world as a benefit for both skin and hair. Today, when we think of castor bean, most of us think of moles, those annoying little guys responsible for tunneling around your backyard in search of food… probably because castor oil is the main component in many mole deterrent sprays. The effectiveness of these sprays is still up in the air. Castor bean can vary greatly in both its appearance and growth habits. Over time, breeders have increased this variability by selecting specific cultivars for leaf and flower color, as well as oil production, leading to its new found popularity with gardeners. With its rapid growth rate, some cultivars can reach the size of a small tree in a very short period of time. The giant castors, of course, can surpass those shorter varieties in both height and width. Dependent on the type of castor you choose to grow, its enormous, glossy palmate leaves can range between anywhere from 6 to 30 inches across, resembling a star, with anywhere from five to 12 deep, coarsely serrated lobes. Each leaf is attached by a slender, long petiole, arranged alternately up the main stalk. In some varieties, the leaves start off a dark, reddish purple, bronze, or green, gradually changing to a darker tone as they mature,

whereas other varieties offer green leaves from the start. The stems and alien-like, spiny seed pods also vary in color and are often prettier than the actual blooms. The male flowers are yellowish-green with creamy white stamens, whereas the female flowers hide within the spiny seed pods, have red stigmas, and are produced in lower numbers than the male. Each fruit is a spiny capsule containing large, bean-like seeds decorated with a brownish mottling pattern. The seed has a small wart-like appendage called a caruncle, which promotes myrmecochory – the dispersal of seed by ants. If you’d like to incorporate castor bean plants into your landscape, sow the seeds in a site with direct sun and deep, rich soil. Alternatively, you may start them early, inside, to get a jump on the growing season, transplanting young plants to a sunny location when the weather is adequate and the possibility of freeze has passed. Make sure to protect the plants from winds that could harm the large, glossy leaves. Castor bean plants love water, so make sure they receive an adequate amount of irrigation should drought be a concern at any time. The biggest drawback of castor bean is its lack of cold hardiness. As the year goes by and the temperatures begin to drop, you’ll notice your castor bean seems to disappear along with the long daylight hours. You can bring your baby back to life by saving its seeds. Its

seed is the castor bean, which, despite its name, is not a true bean. Using rubber gloves, carefully cut the seed stalk (previous bloom) out, allow the seed pods to dry in a cool, dark, and dry room, and crack and remove the seeds carefully. You may store the seeds in a paper envelope, labeled, inside your refrigerator or wherever you store “saved seeds.” If you want to take a peek before you jump all in, Ricinus communis var. New Zealand Black and Ricinus communis var. Carmencita Red are both grown at the UT Gardens, Knoxville. Ricinus communis var. gibsonii – my favorite – makes an annual debut in UT Gardens, Jackson. All in all, castor bean is a star – literally! Don’t let the “poisonous” label scare you, as it would take a deliberate act to utilize it as a poison. Unintentional exposure is highly unlikely, except through the ingestion of the beans. So don’t eat the beans! The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. has almost come to an end. All the scheduling that seemed overwhelming at the beginning of summer has come and gone, and I am both relieved as well as a bit remorseful. As I glance through my own home, it’s obvious it is going to need some TLC before I gear up for fall barbeques and weekend get-togethers. Enter the “honeydo list.” Luckily there is one chore my husband, John, doesn’t mind tackling in our home. But it wasn’t always so. Ten years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried most every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never succumbed to his efforts. I had the same issue cleaning my own tile and grout kitchen floor, and there was little he could do to help me. So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband was skeptical. His skepticism gave way to sheer excitement as he saw what these magical

Iconic Airplane Filling Station Restoration Completed

C l i n t o n H i g hw a y n o r t h o f Knoxville to the Powell community has likely noticed a most unusual piece of roadside architecture: A former gas station built to resemble an airplane. The station was opened in 1931 and was built by Elmer and Henry Nickle along what was then one of the main routes into the city. The building resembles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis and was designed to attract customers during the early age of auto travel. The station later fell into disrepair but has recently been fully restored by the Airplane Filling Station Preservation Association (AFSPA), a local non-profit community group. Today it is recognized as one of the finest surviving examples of roadside architecture in the southeastern United States. On July 12, 2018, the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) recognized Knoxville’s Airplane Filling Station as a significant piece of Tennessee History. In commemoration of this fact, the THC unveiled a roadside marker denoting the station and its history. The unveiling will be a culmination and celebration of this restoration process and an opportunity to recognize the history of the building and the donors and supporters who have played an important role in preserving this important community landmark. Association has announced its 74th concert season – Distinctly Oak Ridge – with concerts beginning in August and culminating in April 2019. Audience members will experience jazz, klezmer, Americana, film, Broadway, folk, and classical music, highlighted by the trumpet, oboe, cello, organ, violin, and voice. The season opens on Sunday, August 26, at 3 pm with the Free Family Concert “What’s Up at the Symphony,” featuring music from Looney Tunes and the dazzling sister-andbrother violin duo of Lydia and Garren Anderson, winners of the 2018 Youth Aliyah Concert sponsored by Oak Ridge Hadassah. “The Free Family Concert is a wonderful opportunity for families and children to experience the world of a symphony orchestra,” said Dan Allcott, Music Director. “We’ll play fun music that will make you laugh out loud, and you will be star struck by the youth talent featured on stage and in the lobby. An instrument petting zoo caps off the joy of music making.” Back by popular demand, the Tesla String Quartet and Thomas Gallant collaborate in music for strings and oboe to open the Oak Ridge Chamber Music Series on Sunday, September 23, at 3 pm at Pollard Auditorium. “There is no shortage of exceptional chamber musicians eager to perform in Oak Ridge,” said Bill Schwenterly, Chamber Music Series Chairperson. “Our audience will also hear performances by the Cumberland Piano Trio, the Kosower & Oh Cello & Piano Duo, and Big Galut(e) Klezmer Ensemble.” The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra & Chorus subscription series opens on Saturday, September 29, at 7:30 pm in a concert featuring a wide variety of music representing America. Avoiding Separation Anxiety A UGUST IS A MONTH of change

with kids going back to school, family vacations coming to an end, and fewer out-of-door activities being planned. Everything changes for our family pets, too. Dogs are pack animals, creatures of habit, and they like having family members at home during the summer months. But changes in the family schedule can be upsetting for a dog, resulting in anxiety, including: » Separation anxiety: This can result when your dog no longer has the kids to play with during the day. Start early in preparing your dog for this change. At least a week before the kids go back to school, begin to separate the dog from the rest of the family by leaving the dog for very short periods of time (15 minutes) then gradually increasing the length of time. The dog has been the center of attention during the summer, romping and playing with the kids; this routine needs to change before school starts. Provide your dog with toys and allow them to begin having more time playing by him/herself. Each time you leave the home begin ignoring the dog at least 10 minutes before your actual departure.

» Boredom: Dogs sleep much of the day, but when they wake up, they want something to do. Provide interactive toys, such as peanut butter filled Kongs, Buster Cube, or a Roll a Treat ball. » Holding bladder too long: It is not reasonable to expect a dog to routinely “hold it” for much longer than eight hours maximum and for young dogs, not longer than two to four hours. Don’t leave your dog for an unreasonable amount of time. Here’s another suggestion. Dog Daze II: A 3-Day Festival of Fun, Food, Shopping, and Competition

Farragut have teamed up with Smoky Mountain Dock Dogs and Ricki’s Pet Depot to once again bring a nationally sanctioned regional canine aquatics competition of DockDogs International. The festivities will take place in the Village Green Shopping Center parking lot, just south of Stein Mart and the new Planet Fitness, on August 17-19. “We had more than 45 dogs of every breed imaginable, totaling 258 entries into each of the various competitions last year,” said Steve Krempasky, Shop Farragut organizer. “These pets represented entries from six different states!” DockDogs was established in 2000; its first event was at the ESPN 2000 Great Outdoor Games competition. This competition will attract dog owners from across the Southeast. Last year there were more than 30 competitors and more than 2500 visitors at the first-time Farragut event. Registrants will be able to gain qualifying points towards attendance at the World Championships, which coincidently will be held once again in Knoxville at the Civic Center October 13-19. If you have never witnessed this, expect the unexpected!

The festivities will start on Friday evening with a local dog “Pooch Plunge!” Local dog owners will have the opportunity to have their puppy try a Dock-Dive! K9 Pet Services of East Tennessee has underwritten The Plunge activity, which will allow non-competitors to try the DockDog experience free of charge. Between 4 and 7 pm, members of the Smoky Mountain DockDogs Club will assist area pet lovers with their introduction to the sport. “Last year our club helped 33 local pet owners try a Dock Dive,” said Trent Steele, Smoky Mountain Dockdogs President. “I believe that is a new benchmark for this type of event.” If anyone is interested in entering their dog (all breeds accepted) in the actual competition,

From September 29 through December 31, the public is invited to attend and engage with the theatre through special anniversary events, giveaways, free tours and open houses, and a curated social media campaign that will include historical photos, fun facts, and more. Noted anniversary events include the Tennessee Theatre 90th Anniversary Gala on September 30 featuring bluegrass/Americana musician Alison Krauss, the most-awarded singer in Grammy history, and a prohibitionera cocktail party on September 29. Nearly 10,000 people attended, and guests also enjoyed a newsreel and musical performances, including the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Throughout the next 90 years, the Tennessee Theatre changed and evolved, struggled and flourished, and after undergoing a nearly $30 million renovation, officially reopened January 14, 2005, as a dazzling entertainment palace with 21st century

technical amenities and a fully restored decorative interior. Shortly following the renovation and reopening, Krauss and her talented band, Union Station, performed as part of the theatre’s first subscription series, selling out two shows on the Tennessee Theatre stage. The 90-year history of the Tennessee Theatre is rich with stories of performers, patrons, parties, poignant events, and pop culture. Theatre staff have been gathering firsthand accounts of these memories from the public and key individuals, capturing and preserving the oral history and impact of the Official State Theatre of Tennessee in Knoxville and beyond. ATTRACTIONS

Songbirds opens with rare and vintage pieces Songbirds offers a unique rock & roll experience with an unparalleled permanent and rotating collection of more than 500 rare vintage instruments. Each display features instruments that made the music, as well as the stories and artists that brought them to life. The main exhibits are self-guided and the All Access Tours include a guided tour through the main exhibits and access to the Green Room and the Vault, where some of the most exclusive guitars in the world are displayed (require advance registration). The museum also offers regular live music, educational workshops, and can be booked for special events. New music venue, The Signal, opens on Chattanooga’s Southside The Signal is Chattanooga’s newest live music venue located on Chattanooga’s vibrant Southside. The 1,300-capacity industrial-chic warehouse is fit for live music, receptions, fundraisers, corporate events, video shoots, trade shows, and conferences. Operated by 62

Marathon Music Works out of Nashville, TN, The Signal will play host to all genres of music with artists like Gramatik, Corey Smith, X Ambassadors, and more. Recent revitalization has filled The Southside with the art, culture, cuisine, and entertainment that have come to define the Chattanooga area. Southeastern Adventure Tours brings fun to the Tennessee River Southeastern Adventure Tours is an educational company devoted to giving

everyone access to the adventures found in the great outdoors. Professional tours include a three hour raft float through the Grand Canyon of the Tennessee River. Summer day camps, nature walks, and mineral hunts, as well as gold prospecting day hunts, are also available. After a day of lively, educational, entertaining adventure, each safari will end with a question/answer period with all participants. Each adventure is filmed, offering guests the opportunity to purchase video of their individual safari.

Lemur Forest Exhibit opens at the Tennessee Aquarium Red-ruffed and Ring-tailed Lemurs are playing in their lush rainforest setting under the Aquarium’s glass peaks on the top floor of the Ocean Journey building. Found only on the island of Madagascar, these captivating creatures are one of the most endangered groups of mammals on the planet. The exhibit provides an opportunity to better understand their story of survival and what’s being done to save them from extinction. Additional upgrades on this floor include renovations of the Stingray Bay touch tank and a dramatic new wall of tropical plants featuring Orchids and Nepenthes (pitcher plants), from the ceiling to the floor, and water gently cascading into a small, plant-filled pool.

Songbirds Guitar Museum

Songbirds adds Songbirds North and South Stages Just one year after opening, Songbirds has expanded into the downstairs section of the Chattanooga Choo Choo complex, formerly the Revelry Room. The 14,000 square-foot addition will host a variety of different artists and performers that will provide a unique experience for live music enthusiasts on Chattanooga’s Southside. The recently renovated space features a new sound system and an atmosphere that ties into the collection of rare, vintage guitars and fretted instruments that can be found upstairs. Songbirds’s North Stage, located upstairs, currently accommodates 200 seated visitors, and the new South Stage downstairs has standing room for up to 500 guests. Station Street opens as Chattanooga’s newest entertainment destination Station Street, formerly a low-traffic alleyway along the side of the Chattanooga Choo Choo, is now pedestrian-friendly with an entertainment focus. The paved and landscaped street offers patio access to a broad range of entertainment options, including Songbirds, The Comedy Catch, Terminal Brewhouse, STIR, Backstage Bar, Hush, Frothy Monkey, Regan’s Place, and more in the works. The street is now used as an outdoor festival space and recently became the 11th street nationwide to allow on-street consumption of alcohol (only from businesses adjacent to the street). The North end of the street connects to businesses along Market Street, including Blue Orleans, Tennessee Stillhouse, and the Hot Chocolatier. The South end includes The Crash Pad, Flying Squirrel, Alleia, Main Street Meats, and additional businesses along Main Street.

Tennessee Aquarium

Tennessee Aquarium opens new exhibit featuring holographic technology From virtual reality immersive learning, the region’s first IMAX with laser projection system, to the only tweeting electric eel in the world, the Tennessee Aquarium continues to be a leader with technology. The new exhibit – Tiny, But Mighty Important – features never-seen-before holographic technology focusing on the role humans play in water quality and the importance of animals such as shiners, darters, and minnows. Guests can watch a short presentation appearing to float in mid-air that illustrates the devastating impact that silt and erosion can have on freshwater ecosystems. By telling the story of freshwater life in such a novel fashion, the exhibit will effectively show guests that even small species can be hugely important. Miller Park undergoing $8.5 million renovation Miller Park, located in downtown’s Innovation District, will undergo major renovations that include elevating the park to street level, a larger open lawn, amphitheater with stage for entertainment, climbable rock outcropping, shaded area, more trees, garden walk, and an enclosed pavilion with restrooms, warming pantry for food, and a moveable glass partition. Additional $5 million improvements to the area around Miller Park include connecting Miller Plaza, adding trees to the median on MLK Blvd., making the area more pedestrian friendly, redesigning traffic and pedestrian flow on Patten Parkway, and more.

Ruby Falls investing $20 million on expansion The multi-year, multi-phase expansion will enhance the visitor experience. Phase I and II highlights include modernizing the historic attraction, adding an outdoor observation area where guests can relax and enjoy spectacular views, new entrance lobby, improved ticketing experience, expanded retail, renovated and expanded restrooms and office space, and additional parking. Ruby Falls is home to America’s deepest commercial cave and tallest underground waterfall open for public viewing, featuring a 145-foot waterfall located 1,120 feet beneath the surface of Lookout Mountain.

Moon River Music Festival moves to Chattanooga in 2018 Founded in 2014 by musician Drew Holcomb, the annual Moon River Music Festival is an exciting, family-friendly, two-day event highlighting the music and culture of Tennessee. Originally taking place in Holcomb’s hometown of Memphis, Moon River has grown into an important and beloved institution in the Tennessee community. Now in its fourth year, Moon River will continue its celebrated tradition of bringing specially curated music lineups and community-focused experiences in its new location at Coolidge Park and will feature 20-22 national acts, two stages, local food vendors, and more. The 2018 line-up is The Avett Brothers, The Head And The Heart, Drew Holcomb And The Neighbors, Judah & The Lion, Trampled By Turtles, Margo Price, Mavis Staples, I’m With Her, The Dirty Guv’nahs, Joseph, Mandolin Orange, Penny And Sparrow, Durand Jones & The Indications, The Secret Sisters, The War And Treaty, Darlingside, The Ballroom Thieves, Caamp, Liz Vice, Boy Named Banjo, Wilder, and Family And Friends. This year’s festival is September 8th and 9th. Levitt AMP Music Series returns to Chattanooga for fall 2018 The Levitt AMP Chattanooga Music Series is a free, 10-week concert series with a diverse lineup of local, regional, and national artists. Held on the lawn of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center located in the Martin Luther King District, this series activates the area once considered a famed live music hub and center for African American community life while reestablishing it as a thriving cultural destination. Patrons will get to enjoy local food vendors, special themes, and special activities for children. The concert series will be held on Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm August 23 through October 25. T WAS JUST a few short years ago

that small business owners seemed preoccupied with the state of the U.S. economy and the future likelihood of success for their individual businesses. What a difference a few years has made. Today, by contrast, entrepreneurs nationwide are preoccupied with filling open job positions. In June of this year, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Research Center reported that 36% of small businesses were unsuccessful in filling open job positions - the highest level on record. In addition, the NFIB reported that 63% of business owners plan on hiring or are trying to hire new workers to fill existing or anticipated future openings. That’s up five points from last month and represents the highest level since September 1999. The temptation today is to fill open positions rather than to hire for the future. Trying to fill an open position, while frustrating, can become even more frustrating if you have to refill the same position months later. Here

Discuss the open position opportunity with trusted associates within your company. They know first-hand about the

job’s requirements, and they likely have a sphere of friendships unavailable to you. They know these people well and might be in a better position to help you to identify those individuals who are looking for a career rather than merely seeking a paycheck. Another approach to consider is to seek potential candidates through your vendors. Representatives of your vendors actively market their products and services to other similar companies throughout your marketplace, including your competition. O f t e nt i m e s t h ey k n ow o f t a l e nt e d individuals looking for new opportunities or hoping to make a move from an employer that might be struggling financially or perhaps one where the personal chemistry isn’t right. With business optimism at record highs, filling future or currently open positions is critical. Be disciplined, and don’t make the common error of just trying to fill a position. Be flexible If we’re not careful, we can be tempted in thinking that looking out for ourselves is the only way to ensure our success. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for 25 years and always have employees who think they’re “above” certain jobs. When hired, you’re usually given your job responsibilities; however, this seldom means that it’s a black and white list that won’t vary. In our restaurants, I’ve had employees who refuse to clean a bathroom. Although that’s their freedom, they will never be considered for a management position due to this refusal. How can I move someone into management who isn’t willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the cleanliness and priorities of the restaurant? Be careful before you refuse to do a job. Weigh the pros and cons and ask yourself what qualities you’ll show in your character by accepting or refusing certain jobs. Give 110% every time Usually the start of a new job is when we’re most excited and anxious to work hard. Giving 110% at the beginning is often easier than giving 110% once we’re engrained 64

in the work environment and comfortable with our performance level. Be willing to give 110% every day. This sacrifice isn’t just made concerning the big work decisions or projects but means that you’re at your best at even the most mundane job responsibilities. We regularly receive letters of recommendation for past employees sometimes five to seven years past their employment. The employees who I remember after seven years are the ones that gave their all, never complained, were honest, on time, and positive. Never underestimate how giving your all will benefit your future. Leave a legacy regardless of where you are. Show your team spirit It doesn’t take long to notice who is “on the team” and who isn’t. Those who do only their job and never help others or brainstorm to help another team member are quickly sequestered from the team. It’s naive to approach our professional career and think that we won’t need the help, support, and kindness of others in order to achieve our goals. I’ve found that giving my time, talents, and knowledge to help

others never hurts me or my career but only ensures that the help is there when I’m in need. Being a team player means being free with your knowledge, time, resources, and talents. It never involves secrecy, hoarding, or limiting the use of our resources. Realize the importance of your network Being a great team player contributes to you forming professional positive relationships with a broad range of people. The larger your network, the more doors that are available to you! As people watch and admire you from a distance and see your behavior as related to your profession and others, they don’t forget when they see excellence. We never know when those testimonies from others will be our most needed asset. That’s why we NEVER burn any bridges and we work very hard to be a contributing member of every team we’re on.

Henry IV, Part One August 2, 4, 10, & 12 at 7 pm The story of Prince Hal (the future King Henry V of England), a 15th century wild child who carouses with criminals and commoners, helps his loser chums rob his father’s treasury and spends all his time in seedy bars. This, of course, all takes place before Prince Hal’s glorious “reformation,” when he transforms himself from a total disgrace into a noble leader, who helps put down a rebel uprising that threatens his father’s reign and kills the guy whose been bad-mouthing him all over England. Being a young prince is busy work, and this is just Part 1 of the story! There will be an indoor matinee performance of Henry IV, Part One on August 5 at 2 pm in the luxuriously air conditioned and well-appointed Scruffy City Hall, located at 32 Market Square.
