UGU S T I S t ypically my reset month. While it is not technically the change of a season (as we can all tell by the oppressive heat here in the south), it has the feel of the “end of summer” probably due to student s going back to school. Although we are Photo by Mirtography personally past that stage - except for a daughter-in-law in grad school - I have good friends who are teachers that are gearing up mentally for the transition back to workdays filled with new faces and new schedules. The idea of getting “back on track” has never been one I adhere to, as I have never felt “on track” to begin with! My reset has to do more with a flexible routine of getting tasks done, whether that is exercising regularly, cleaning out the craft closet, or repainting the laundry room. It begins with giving myself grace for whatever it was I had planned to do during the summer that somehow is still not completed. Instead, I choose to give

attention to what I am going to do next by figuring out tasks in order of my own priorities - realizing that if the task is not important to me personally, it probably won’t happen. I have also found that setting realistic goals - taking some time to stretch everyday vs. being able to join a regularly scheduled yoga class - gives me positive incentives. Focusing on what is possible and available to me instead of what I might not have the time (or energy!) to accomplish keeps the negativity at bay. Making sure my list is short and specific also helps me stay motivated, as I get a lot of satisfaction in being able to cross things off! As a wise person once said, “Progress is a spectrum, not a specific place.” And I will fully admit that during August, most if not all of my “to do” list will be happening inside with air conditioning! Progress is still progress even if you aren’t sweating - thank goodness!

After visiting their state-of-the-art facility (and the cleanest shop we have ever encountered!) on Lovell Road just north of I-40, Everything Knoxville had the opportunity to find out more about their thriving business and where they are headed in future. EK: How long has European Auto Garage been in business, and how did you become the owner/operator? Rich: European Auto Garage has been a leading automotive service facility here in Knoxville since 2007, and we are dedicated to being the first choice for our customers when servicing their BMWs, MiniCoopers, VWs, Audis, Mercedes Benz, Volvos, Land Rovers, and more. Cyndi and I met when I was a Grayson BMW Master Technician. After we married, I left Grayson and worked
at a few other independent service shops before the previous owners of EAG hired me to manage the shop. Cyndi: The owners offered to sell us the shop when they decided to go in a different direction. It was a win-win decision - we wanted to stay in Knoxville, and Rich wanted to continue working with BMWs, so we agreed to buy the shop. After a few years, we purchased the five acre site off Lovell Road and were able to build our dream shop and eventually expand. We made the official move in July 2017 and just finished our newest endeavor, The Stables, last month. EK: What services does EAG provide for its customers? Rich: European Auto Garage specializes in maintaining and repairing European vehicles. Our factory trained and certified technicians are well equipped to perform diagnostics, manufacturer recommended maintenance, and complex repairs, whether large or small. Each
customer also receives a complimentary 50 point digital inspection report, providing a detailed evaluation, complete with photos and recommendations if repairs or additional services are needed. Our customers know they can rely on us and our state-of-the-art equipment to fix their vehicles right the first time. We back up all our repairs with our 3 year/36,000 mile nationwide warranty. Our warranty is one of the best in the industry. We even offer expert, hand wash detailing and ceramic coating services. These patients continue to experience chronic back pain even after surgery, and the likelihood of getting this condition increases with multiple back surgeries. Other symptoms may include anxiety or depression, in addition to the continued back pain.
Over the years, I have had back injections that really haven’t helped, and physical therapy that didn’t do a lot either. This has been going on for more than 30 years. We sat down with Dr. A.J., he told us what to expect and what the procedures would be like. I am now able to do more things around the house, and even travel more. We made a trip recently and I spent 10 hours in the car with no pain - I could have never done that before!
Why do some people get this condition? Some common causes are choosing the wrong surgical procedure, an inappropriate surgical candidate, or not performing surgery at the correct level in the spine. Certain types of spinal procedures like fusions, especially if they are multilevel fusions, will likely cause pain or new disc herniations above or below the fused spinal segments due to the fact that the discs above and below the fusion are not

Successful treatments are available for chronic back pain able to withstand the pressure exerted on them and end up creating bulges, herniations, or extrusions. If the sacrum is fused to the last lumbar vertebrae, it can also cause another type of low back pain by putting excessive pressure on the joints lower down in the pelvis. Sometimes this is unavoidable because the surgery was necessary to keep the patient from losing the ability to stand or walk. What are common treatments for Failed Back Surgery Syndrome?
Most treatments are limited to pain medications, injections, or spinal cord stimulators. The days of multiple surgeries and revisions seems to have passed, as we are seeing fewer and fewer of those patients in recent years. What is your experience treating this condition? Dr. A.J. was hired by a hospital specifically to treat these patients and was there for almost 15 years. He had a greater than 85% success rate during that time and also
I had a two level lumbar spinal fusion 15 years ago and developed other related issues - joint pain and dysfunction, plus some muscular issues. After an intensive pain management series with both doctors, I am amazed and grateful for the difference it has made in my life. I am moving better, able to start slowly working out again, and wow! What a mood booster not being in such pain 24/7. My quality of life has changed so much for the better.
in his private practice. These were mostly patients who had been prescribed dangerously high doses of pain medication to the point that their doctors wanted them to safely detox from them. Dr. A.J.’s goal was to get the patients’ pain down to a manageable level so that opiates would not be needed when they were discharged after treatment - usually two to three months. How do you help these people? Our clinic uses many other types of treatments, in addition to acupuncture, to get the results that we regularly see. Some of these block pain signals from reaching the spinal cord, others reduce inflammation to help with pain, and others resolve muscle imbalances that can be contributing to the overall condition. Who are good candidates for these treatments? Anyone with back pain after surgery should schedule an in-office consultation to see if they are a good candidate. During our initial meeting, we will be able to tell them what the likelihood will be that we can help. If we do not believe we can help, we will also let them know. How long does it take to see improvement? This mostly depends on the severity of the condition and how long they have had it. Because of our extensive experience in this area, we can give a good estimate of
what to expect and how long it will take during the initial consultation. What are the goals for treatment? First of all, we want to reduce the pain, although this doesn’t happen overnight. As the pain decreases, we like to get the patient to slowly increase their activity levels, because gentle exercise can generally help them long term. It is very rewarding to get someone moving again, playing with their grandchildren, going for walks, or even playing sports they love like tennis or golf. Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers? We know that the debilitating pain that goes along with Failed Back Surgery Syndrome can be a terrible drain on you and your loved ones. What’s New at the Zoo?
I
F YOU haven’t been to the zoo in a while, now is a great time to go! Zoo Knoxville welcomed another new silvered-leaf langur monkey at the end of June. Unlike the adults of this species who are gray and black, baby langurs are bright orange! The male baby, who is now exploring the outdoor habitat, will retain this orange color for a few more months. They are all a part of the Silvered-Leaf Langur Species Survival Plan. The Zoo will soon be introducing baby chimpanzee, Stevie, once she reaches a more independent phase and can be reunited with the adult chimpanzees. Her keepers have been taking care of her in an off-viewing area since her mother’s surgery after she was born. You can also watch the river otter’s antics in their new habitat - part of the ARC project. River otters are an indicator species whose presence is a sign of good water quality. OLONIAL VILLAGE in south Knoxville, part of the post-war residential boom, is where Lauren Moroz found her 70 -year-old home complete with red oak floors that definitely needed some TLC to restore them to their former glory. She was so delighted that she had the Tomescu’s install new hardwood floors in her kitchen (the only room that did not come with hardwoods) and was again pleased with the transformation, as well as the transition from the new kitchen flooring to the original flooring in the dining room. After Valera made a few repairs and dealt with a couple of existing stains, the home project was done. The most surprising aspect of the job?
“Svetlana also told us there would be very little to no dust, which I found very hard to believe” said Lauren. “But she was right! There was no noticeable dust throughout the entire project.” Lauren added, “In my experience, you often get what you pay for. DockDogs® was established in 2000; its first event was at the ESPN 2000 Great Outdoor Games competition. This competition will attract dog owners from across the Southeast. Smoky Mountain DockDogs is the local club that will be supporting this event. Last year there were more than 30 competitors and more than 5,000 visitors during the sophomore effort of this soon-to-be annual Farragut event. Registrants will be able to gain qualifying points toward attendance at the World Championships in October. If you have never witnessed this expect the unexpected! First Utility District is a major sponsor, supplying more than 27,000 gallons of fresh Tennessee River water to fill the pool for the weekend. Competitors love coming to the Dog Daze at Village Green event because of the atmosphere of the crowd, the local food trucks, and the level of competition this event brings. There will be more than 400 jumps with 150 competitors. Between qualifying rounds, spectators can shop the Village Green Shopping Center, visit the many merchant booths on-site, mingle with pet food suppliers, plus get food and drinks at the Festival Tent while visiting pet related vendor booths, local merchant showcases, and displays. The festivities will start on Friday afternoon with local dogs taking a “Pooch Plunge!” Area dog owners have the opportunity for their “puppy” to try a Dock-Dive! The SMDD Club has organized this activity, allowing non-competitors to try the DockDog experience free of charge from 4 to 7 pm as an introduction to the sport. hate the label “mudroom,” it’s a good description of how we often use the space. It can be a messy catchall for daily items like shoes, coats, bags, and dog leashes. However, the mudroom has evolved into a highly functional family center. Since it’s in a common entryway that visitors see, homeowners want the mudroom to match the style of the house while functioning as a control center. So besides a place to sit as you put on your shoes, the mudroom can be designed to do so much more. Include Hooks and Cubbies Every member of the family needs their own coat hook and cubby space. Cubbies help everyone keep track of everyday items like a purse or cap. Kids are more likely to hang their backpack and jackets on a hook, keeping them organized and saving valuable time on school mornings. Add Cabinets A mudroom is part of your home, so dress up the look of the space by adding cabinet doors over the cubbies. Doors make a mudroom look more stylish rather than a

L AND of adventures, a dearly loved trail town on the Appalachian Trail, a perfect place along the Virginia Creeper Trail, all things Appalachia, a charming small town, home of Trail Days, and one of my most favorite destinations. All of the descriptions listed came to mind when first thinking of how to express all that Damascus, Virginia, is to me and countless others. If you live in Knoxville and are looking for a getaway to nip your wanderlusting, drive northeast for about three hours and you’ll find everything that you’re looking for and more!
Stay A visit to Damascus can certainly be done as a day trip from Knoxville. However, to truly experience the spirit of the area, I highly recommend that you stay at least a night or two if you can. From bed & breakfast spots in town to cabins in the hills and camping locations, you have plenty of options. My top three choices? In The Heart of Damascus: Dragonfly Inn If you want a downtown Damascus experience, you can’t pass up checking out the Dragonfly Inn. Ralph and Patti Wilson are

Locally owned by Scott and Alison Little, this cozy and beautiful AirBnB is filled with art, handmade quilts, pieces of Damascus, intriguing books, and a level of hospitality that immediately makes you feel as if you’re just staying at a friend’s place. One of the biggest perks of the home is the fact that it sits just steps away from the Virginia Creeper Trail, historic Green Cove Station, Green Cove Community Center, and the Little’s community-based, brick-and-mortar outdoor shop,

Green Cove Collective. Stay on a day when the food trucks are set up and you’ll be in a one-stop spot for a place to stay, play, shop, and eat. You can’t go wrong with this one! Escape at Rugby Creek I’ll start Rugby Creek off by saying that this “Stay” feature could easily be given its own writeup. Rugby Creek Cabins is home to an Overlook Cabin, a Gypsy Wagon Tiny Home, Mountain Top Cabin, Pond Side Tiny Home, pet-friendly accommodations, overnight stables for horses, and others. Their website is a fantastic source of information on all things to do nearby, and they’ve even included downloaded maps for you. If all of that wasn’t enough, they are also connected to Rugby Creek Animal Rescue, a non-profit that is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, retirement, and adoption of at-risk, injured, and geriatric animals.

Mojo’s Trailside Cafe & Coffee Located in downtown Damascus and right along the Virginia Creeper is a dining spot that I can’t miss anytime I’m in town. Mojo’s Trailside Cafe & Coffee has been a favorite of mine since my first stop in this beautiful little town. Their menu includes Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits, Cali BLT, Paragon’s Pancakes, Huevos Rancheros, Southern Steak Bagel, Trail Tacos, fresh locally baked cake, a variety of both hot and cold drinks, and just about anything else that will make your mouth water and have you stopping in every time you visit. Service is always excellent, food is fresh and delicious, and the overall vibe is laid-back and fits the trail perfectly.

And, well, I think that’s the perfect kind of local guy doing great things that I’d love to support, what about you? Grayson Highlands and The Appalachian Trail The Land of Wild Ponies and the Appalachian Trail is one of the top outdoor destinations in the Damascus area. Located near the two highest mountains in Virginia, Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Grayson Highlands State Park offers never-ending views, historic places to explore, a section of the AT, waterfalls, outdoor picnic

areas, camping, as well as horse trails and horse camping area. On the park’s website, you’ll also find fun events like this month’s Old Time Barn Dance. Do a little research, plan out your day, and always remember to practice responsible stewardship on our public lands and leave no trace when you play! The Virginia Creeper One of the features of Virginia that I love is that they have taken their old railroad grades and turned them into trails for their Rails to Trails program. The top spot on the list is the Virginia Creeper, and while you’re in Damascus, you’ll be next to a 17-mile section that runs from Whitetop Station into downtown Damascus. You can rent bikes in town, get a shuttle lift to the top, and then enjoy the ride back down. Plan on giving yourself plenty of time to make stops and explore. I suggest that because on my first ride on The Creeper, I was having so much fun that the next thing I knew I was already back in town and wanting to go again. So, by all means, slow down and enjoy the journey!

Directions: In skillet, cook sausage links according to package directions. Set aside. In medium bowl, whisk eggs, milk, almond extract, and cinnamon. Dip bread slice in egg mixture. Wrap bread slice around cooked sausage link, pressing seam to keep from unrolling. Repeat with remaining bread slices and sausage links. In large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Place roll-ups in skillet, seamside down, and cook until all sides are browned, approximately 10 minutes. Drizzle with syrup.

Herbed Spanish Omelet Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 4 Ingredients: • 1 pound potatoes, peeled and diced or shredded • Water • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 cup diced red onion • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 4 large whole eggs, lightly beaten • 2 egg whites, lightly beaten • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives • Salt, to taste (optional) • Fresh herb sprigs, for garnish (optional) Directions: Place potatoes in large pan. Cover with water. Bring to boil and cook, uncovered, 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand about 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Drain well. In deep, 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and garlic. Cook about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add potatoes and cook 5 minutes. Combine whole eggs and egg whites. Stir in parsley, basil, and chives. Season with salt, to taste, if desired. Pour mixture over potatoes in hot skillet. Reduce heat and cook, uncovered, about 10 minutes or until bottom of omelet is golden. If desired, brown top under toaster oven. Garnish with fresh herb sprigs, if desired.

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month
Sun-loving Lantana Can Be Hardy in Tennessee When Conditions Are Right BY J A M E S N E W B U R N , I N T E R I M D I R E C TO R , U T G A R D E N S , K N OX V I L L E

S A C H I L D, I was always fascinated with Lantana and its blooms. All those tiny individual florets forming one substantial flower cluster was a wonder to me. I used to pick the little flower heads apart and see how many single flowers I could get. The color of the flower head also captivated me. I remember how the separate flowers slowly faded or darkened to other shades as they aged. Then there were the bicolors that would have contrasting colors on the outer rings of the cluster (or umbel inflorescence as I learned later). These, too, transitioned as they aged. How cool was it that a flower could change colors! As an adult gardener, I became aware of just how valuable Lantana (Lantana camara) is in the landscape. It is drought tolerant once established, very heat resistant, and provides season-long color, even tolerating a light frost before succumbing to winter freezes. It is a semi-woody shrub that can get up to 2 to 4 feet tall and wide or larger, so one specimen can make a big splash in a garden bed. Newer varieties are more compact and are ideal for mixed containers or as a landscape border. Throughout Tennessee, we treat them as annual bedding plant for the most part. There are a few cultivars, however, that have been shown to be hardy in some parts of the state and will re-grow each year. It all depends on how low the temperature gets in the winter. ‘Miss Huff’ is perhaps the most reliably hardy, widely available, and popular cultivar in Tennessee. Established plants can withstand 0º F. With showy pink, yellow, and orange florets, this selection is standout. Jason Reeves at UT Gardens, Jackson related that he has plants there that have been coming back for 15 years now. It is a vigorous grower and his reaches in the 4-foot range, though they can get taller. Another Lantana that has shown to be hardy in many areas of Tennessee is ‘Ham and Eggs.’ This variety has a rather richer, deeper bicolor inflorescence pattern with the outside flowers shaded a bright, deep pink (ham) and the inside flowers being yellow (eggs). It also can grow to be rather large, and Jason indicates it has been hardy in Jackson.

Vivid Lantana, like this yellow ‘Chapel Hill’ cultivar, thrive at the UT Gardens, Knoxville and Jackson. In each location, some Lantana varieties have proven hardy, surviving winter temperatures to thrive again. That’s not the case at the cooler - and higher - elevation UT Gardens, Crossville, where Lantana are true summer annuals.
‘Chapel Hill Yellow’ has proved hardy for us in Knoxville and has come back for about four years. Somewhat smaller than ‘Miss Huff’ or ‘Ham and Eggs,’ it usually tops out about 18 to 24 inches. It has a spreading habit that makes it ideal for the front or mid-border. Its solid yellow color brightens up any full-sun location where all Lantanas thrive. When we are dealing with “hardy” or “perennial” Lantana, those terms can be relative in Tennessee, as we are in a transition zone of their hardiness range. Depending on your particular micro-climate, one cultivar may be hardy for you but not your neighbor. Shalena Durkot at the UT Gardens, Crossville has said she has had no luck with any of them; however, Jason and I have had success in Jackson and Knoxville. My advice is to try any of these varieties and see how you fare. Lantanas
are beautiful, low maintenance, pollinator-attractors whether they last one season or many. A variety of Lantana can be found at the UT Gardens, Jackson and Knoxville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public.

ELIEVE IT or not, fall is coming soon. As we get ready for the change in seasons, we also need to think about changes that may be happening in our lives and in our landscapes. Change is the one inevitable aspect of life, other than death. That is also true of your yard. Young plants mature. Trees fall and trees grow. What was once sunny may now be shady and vice versa. Some plants thrive and others struggle. Neighbors arrive, and areas that were once wooded are cleared. Or maybe those neighbors put up a big fence or wall of trees, and your view is impacted. The situation could also be that you are the new neighbor who is struggling to learn how to garden in an unfamiliar environment where some of the plants you love don’t do well. It isn’t only the outside that changes. Sometimes our health or the health of a family member declines, and we are no longer able to do the gardening that we once did. Sometimes the one who did all the work in the yard is no longer there. On the other side of the coin, children may arrive or take up a sport and suddenly your free time is no longer free. All of this is a roundabout way of telling you to not be afraid to make the changes that you need to make. I want your yard to be a place where you can go to enjoy life, not something that you dread! If you hate maintaining big beds and can’t afford to hire someone else to do it, take them out and sow grass or spread mulch. If you have shrubs that require constant trimming or treating or babying, take them out and replace them. Embrace the change and move on! Now that I have that out of the way, let’s talk about some general plant stuff that needs to be done. Yes, I know it is hot with 100% humidity and the mosquitoes are as big as hummingbirds, but your plants need attention. ☼ Do your monthly checkup of your yard. Walk on out there and look to see what is really going on. Plants that look good from your patio might not look so healthy up close! ☼ You may be getting plenty of rain at your house, but I have had to drag out the hose a few times at mine. If you don’t have a rain gauge, use sentinel plants like hydrangeas (that droop when they are thirsty) to tell you when things are dry. You know what I am going to say next: Sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but don’t do diddly for trees and shrubs. Yep, I’ll keep saying that until everyone in the area understands and I stop hearing “but I have a
sprinkler” when you come in and want to know why your plants are dead. ☼ Check for disease on your plants and treat as needed. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and shothole disease are making an appearance, as well as the less treatable root diseases. Remember that good hygiene is a primary way of stopping the problem, so remove diseased areas if practical and pick up any leaves that fall to the ground. It is also best to water at soil level, not overhead. ☼ Check for bugs, but make sure the ones you have are bad guys before you start spraying. Overtreatment is causing two serious problems: The problem bugs are becoming resistant to the chemicals, and good guys like bees are getting wiped out. Always start with the least toxic products first, then progress if the problem continues. I will add, however, that some insects will require a systemic product unless you can catch them in the crawler stage. Crepe Myrtle Bark Scale is one of those. ☼ Did you plant vegetables? How did they do? If you didn’t enjoy the success you had hoped for, come in and talk to us
and let’s see if we can figure out what went wrong. Sometimes the solution is very simple, like plant rotation or installing drip irrigation. ☼ Isn’t it amazing how fast the weeds can take over? Keep pulling them, and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent. ☼ If there are areas of your yard that are struggling with no apparent reason, come in and talk to us. You might need to do a soil test to determine if you have a pH or nutrient deficiency. Our pH in the area tends to run neutral at 7 or so. Acid lovers like hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons, and roses will need to have that level brought down to 5.5-6.5. ☼ Don’t forget to feed the birds! F YOU WERE listening to country music back in the ’70 s, you will remember Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. Larry had started off solo. In the late ’70s, Larry and the Gatlin Brothers released their f ir s t album, Str aight Ahead. That album gave the brothers a hot number one hit with their song “All the Gold in California.” The album was certified platinum, topping out in the U.S. at number seven and in the Canadian charts at number five. The brothers went on with other hits that still resonate with fans and bring back memories. Each time songs like “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You),” “She Used to Be Somebody’s Baby,” “Talkin’ to the Moon,” and “Love of a Lifetime” are heard, fans are taken back in time, as they are crowd favorites at Gatlin Brothers shows all across the country. Knoxvillians will get to experience that firsthand when the Gatlin Brothers perform at our own Bijou Theatre on Saturday, August 27th. Rudy Gatlin called me to chat about what he and his brothers have been up to and what fans can expect from the show at the Bijou. The brothers have been in the music business for an astonishing 67 years, but Rudy wants fans to know that he and his brothers, Larry and Steve, survived the pandemic and are doing well. “We’re fine. Everybody’s in pretty good shape health-wise. 2020 was kind of a reset for everybody on all kinds of things in our life - personally and professionally. Things are a little different. Since then, we’ve done a few dates - 30 to 35. We’re going to do about that many this year. Crowds are
good. Travel’s a little weird,” referring to the pains of flying in today’s economy. Rudy then proudly said, “But we haven’t missed one concert yet!” Adding about fan attendance, “They’re glad to be back out there. They’re glad to be back in a venue or outside and not having to mask up and sit six feet apart and all that stuff. They’re happy to be back and enjoying concerts.” Responding to the comment that the Gatlin Brothers may be the Rolling Stones of country music, Rudy said, “Well, we started before they did. We started 67 years ago in 1955. Of course, they’re older than we are, a little bit.” Gatlin is referencing Larry (6 years old), Steve (4 years old), and Rudy (2 years old) singing southern gospel music as they listened to the greats who were recording it at that time. They recorded a total of four gospel albums. Larry was noticed by Dottie West, who encouraged him to write music. He wrote eight songs for her, which she recorded. This led to Larry meeting Kris Kristofferson, who took him under his wing and introduced him to all the right people. Shortly thereafter, Steve and Rudy joined Larry in Nashville and formed the group we know and love today. Of course many years have passed, and Rudy acknowledges changes in him and his brothers, as well as the fans attending their concerts - most are their age or a just a little younger. The majority have been with them since the early days, and for many this won’t be their first Gatlin Brothers’ concert. Rudy and his brothers are definitely up for making it worth the time and ticket cost by
putting on an entertaining show for those first-timers and returning fans. When asked what fans can expect from the Gatlin Brothers at their Knoxville show this month, Rudy said, “Well, we’re gonna do some of the hits - a lot of the hits throw in a couple of the ‘misses,’ ha-ha! They appreciate the hits. But we were blessed to have had a bunch of Top 30 and Top 40 radio hits. We don’t do all of them, but we do most of them. We cut up a little bit, have a good time, and crack a few funnies. Hopefully it’s entertaining and they are pleased that they’ve spent their hardearned money, and we’re thankful for that because they have any number of places to spend those entertainment dollars that they have. HE ASIAN Culture Center of TN (ACCTN) was founded in 2014 to promote culture, diversity, and unity in the community. Communities benefit every time there is an organized event leading people to develop an open mind about others and their culture. Our aim is to develop Asian cultural diversity and understanding in our Tennessee community. Similar to previous years, the 2022 Asian Festival will offer authentic traditional food vendors representing Asian Cultures such as Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Korea, China, Japan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistani, and Vietnam. We are especially proud of the featured performance art that includes traditional Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thailand, and Indian, Indonesia Japan, and Philippine dance and music. The glass was covered with white spots, and since the couple has a water filtration system and never used bar soap, they were at a loss as to what was causing the spots. Center New Exhibitions Opening Emporium August 5

HE ARTS & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at The Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 5-27. Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or by visiting the online shop at KnoxAlliance.store. Tennessee Artists Association: 50 Years of Artistic Excellence: From the Past into the Future in the Lower Gallery This new exhibition celebrates Tennessee Artist’s Association 50th anniversary as the area’s oldest member-supported arts organization. TAA began with five members who met for coffee. Highlights of the first year included an art workshop and a Spring Show. By 1978, it had more than 230 members from 34 cities in Tennessee. Shows expanded in the 1980s to include Pigeon Forge, Chattanooga, Kingsport, Nashville, and Children’s Hospital Fantasy of Trees. The 1990s saw TAA’s continued interest in Betty Bullen social causes with shows supporting Children’s Hospital, the Scholastic Arts program for 7-12 grade students in 14 counties, and the sponsorship of a Boy Scout Explorer Post in the Arts. Monthly meetings - free and open to anyone - at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Knoxville include practical art demonstrations, discussions, and opportunities for individual artists to get involved in learning, community and shows. Guests are welcome to the TAA gallery and artist studio at the Emporium, Suite 106. New Work by Terra Madre: Women in Clay in the Upper Gallery Terra Madre is a juried group of women clay artists founded in the year 2000 by female ceramic artists in East Tennessee. Their mission is to support each other in their clay work, advance the appreciation of ceramics in Tina Curry East Tennessee, and encourage each other in the pursuit of their dreams as artists and as women. Terra Madre members are affiliated with many juried and professional arts organizations. Collectively, the group exhibits in several shows annually; individually, their work has been exhibited all across the country and can be found in galleries, shops, juried fine craft shows and fairs, and in many private art collections. Works by Sergio, Estefano, and Valeria Martínez & Héctor Saldivar in the Atrium Sergio Martínez Ávila and his children live and work in Cantarranas, Honduras. He has 34 years of professional experience with primitivism,

genre painting, and figurative art with exhibits in Europe, Asia, Canada, and Latin America. Estefano Martínez and his sister, Valeria, are emerging artists in their last year of high school. Both have exhibited work in Honduras, where they have participated in muralistic Sergio Martínez Ávila activities since 2019. Born in Mexico City in 1966, Héctor Saldivar began developing his artist talents later in life. He has participated in Casa HoLa events (part of HoLa Hora Latina) in Knoxville and the Tennessee Arts Commission in Nashville. He is an alebrijes artist working mainly with papier-mâché and clay but also paints with acrylics and oils. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. His art honors his Mexican roots. Foothills Craft Guild Fine Crafts in the Display Case Foothills Craft Guild is dedicated to encouraging the development and appreciation of arts and handicrafts of all types, promoting high standards of workmanship in handicrafts, conducting educational programs on handicrafts with all ages, sponsoring handicraft shows and demonstrations, and engaging in activities that contribute to the advancement, development, and appreciation of arts and handicrafts. Featuring work by more than 15 guild members, it highlights their upcoming Tennessee Showcase of Fine Artisans, Pam Harris November 4-6 at the Expo Center.
Jack Retterer: Languages of Art on the North Wall Art, in its purest form, often communicates deep and strong feelings, private thoughts, or shared events in the human experience. The Languages of Art is an exploration of these human experiences through both photographic and verbal artistic skills. Jack Retterer first created photography to be followed up with a poetic interpretation of each image. However, he soon began to write the poems first and then seek an ideal image to reinforce the feelings, thoughts, and shared events of the poem. Jack is a fine art photographer, teacher, and poet who is active in the arts community in East Tennessee. His American Impressionist style photography and large canvas prints have been on display throughout the area. Prior to his move to East Tennessee, Jack taught photography at Benedictine University in Illinois. Currently, he teaches Fine Art Photography at the University of Tennessee. The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection

NOXVILLE IS VERY fortunate to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (not to be confused with the Frank H. McClung Museum, a wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee). The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library and housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street. The McClung is home to a large collection of regional history and historic documents and is a top-notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to web-based genealogical databases, and that’s just the beginning. The McClung makes it easy for anyone to visit. It is open every day, but the times will differ depending on the day of the week. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung. If you are starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, plan a visit and take one of the free introduction to internet genealogy classes. Find out who lived in your house in 1925 or check out where your grandmother lived in the 1940 U.S. Census. Make a day of it, and while you’re downtown, have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General Store, or see a show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. So many changes have been taking place in downtown Knoxville, and your research on local history at the McClung will most likely make you want to explore more of this historic area. For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comfort of your own home with its online digital collection. Spend hours hunting down historic images from Knoxville and East Tennessee. You can even purchase photos in a number of different ways. Our favorite collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection taken by Knoxville’s own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. This collection has an estimated 75,000 negatives, providing a visual legacy of Knoxville and East Tennessee from 1907 until 1960. Preservation printing of these negatives has been the major focus of the McClung Historical Collection for two decades. Jim Thompson (1881-1976) and his younger brother, Robin Thompson (1895-1977), were business

partners from 1920 to 1926 as Thompson Brothers. Both men were pioneer commercial photographers. Reminding You to Not Let the Cat Out of the Bag So You Won’t Get the Cold Shoulder

DIOMS ARE defined as a group of words having a meaning not deducible from the individual words but instead established by usage. A recent article I came across was written to help new English speakers gain understanding of idioms that are frequently used in business and social situations - definitely not a piece of cake! This led to a search of a few common idiom phrases and their origins. “Close, but no cigar” comes from traveling fairs and carnivals in the 1800s. The prizes back then were targeted to adults, usually cigars or bottles of whiskey. If you missed the prize at a carnival game, the carnie folk would shout, “Close! But no cigar!” By the 1930s, the phrase had extended beyond the fairground to mean any situation that was a near miss. “Cold shoulder” is another one from the 1800s. If guests overstayed their welcome, the hosts would serve them a cold cut of shoulder meat (pork, mutton, or beef shoulder) - inferior in taste and the toughest part of the animal as a not so subtle signal that the meal was over and it was time for them to be on their way. It has morphed into any time your “friendliness” towards another has worn thin. “Pull out all the stops” is a common term for using all available resources to achieve a desired
result. This originally referred a pipe organ’s stop knobs, which are used to regulate the sound and volume. When the stops of the instrument are all pulled out, it opens the air flow to every pipe, which in turn makes the volume incredibly loud. “Let the cat out of the bag” came about in the 1700s when piglets were sold in the street markets and placed in bags. A common scam was to replace the paid for piglet with cat that was much less valuable. When a cat was let out of a bag, the fraud was revealed. Now it’s mainly used for those who divulge a secret too soon. “Chew the fat” was a common sailor’s term referring to the days when ships had to carry food that wouldn’t spoil. One of these was a tough, salted pork skin consisting largely of fat that would only be eaten if all other food was gone… the sailors often complained as they tried to consume these dregs of the food chain. Hence, this phrase for talking with no real purpose or outcome. Within all this, I often feel sorry for those trying to learn “American English” as a second language, because many times our words do not mean what the words mean! Thank goodness for LinkedIn, Reader’s Digest, Merriam Webster, and ESL teachers everywhere who are there to help wade through our sometimes strange language and phrases.
