Navigating Your Retirement Future abeled the Great Recession, Americans have been told by experts that this most recent recession officially ended several years ago. But, for the average American, little has changed, and for those who have already retired or may be nearing retirement, the level of uncertainty they must navigate going forward remains at an all-time high. Ridiculously low interest rates on investments, nagging high unemployment rates, skyrocketing federal debt, huge stock market fluctuations, and rising health care costs are just a few of the many challenges facing existing and would-be retirees who hope to successfully navigate the uncertainties confronting them in what they had once seen as their golden years. With few exceptions, most of us do not possess the required financial skills needed to create the type of comprehensive retirement planning necessary to successfully navigate life’s uncertainties. As a result, the majority of Americans enter retirement without the prerequisite planning needed to assure their financial futures. This month Everything Knoxville is pleased to share with you its recent interview with Knoxville-based financial planner and president of Fritts Financial, Eric Fritts. Eric shares many of his thoughts regarding the financial uncertainties confronting each of us and possible strategies for moving forward. 6

EK: There has always been financial uncertainty in our lives. How has the most recent recession changed that equation? Eric: This recession has been more complex than most. Most market corrections do not happen at the magnitude in which the last one did. The last correction happened quickly, too! This caused many government programs to be quickly implemented to try and stop the bleeding and fuel the recovery. The good news is we hit all-time market highs around the middle of the year and have been continuing to climb since then. The uncertainty comes from all the government programs and aids that have been put in place to get us there. We have yet to see what long-term effects this will have on our economy. Oftentimes the best intentions have unappealing trade-offs, such as low interest rates for investors. Uncertainty is nothing new. We are just confronted with a higher level of uncertainty at the present. This should not prevent us from

participating in investment strategies to help us obtain our goals and objectives. We should, however, make sure our strategies are well thought out and monitored closely. EK: What would you say is the biggest mistake being made by many of us who are attempting to secure our retirement future? Eric: I would say not working with an advisor who specializes in working with people who are in whatever phase of life they’re in. You have to understand that, during your accumulation phase of life, your investment strategies should be very different than they are during your preservation and distribution phase. I see many retirees and advisors alike who believe a slight shift in asset allocations is all that needs to be considered once an individual retires. Do that, pick a time to start taking social security, get your Medicare, and then start sipping Mai Tais on the beach. They do not understand the ins and outs of a cohesive retirement strategy and all the different aspects that need Photos by D. Roberts Photography

to be considered. Oftentimes it’s because they are not working with an advisor who is experienced in this highly specialized field. EK: Do you feel the average American waits too long to begin planning for retirement? Eric: Absolutely. With most employers completely phasing out pension and defined benefit plans, pulling back on 401(k)s and defined contribution plans, and the long-term sustainability of social security being questioned, it’s extremely important for people to take responsibility of their retirement future. The earlier you start to plan, the better off you’ll be in the future. EK: You are younger than most financial planners. How does that benefit your clients? Eric: I would say the first benefit would be my ability to think outside the box and adjust to new circumstances. Many advisors get stuck in their ways, stuck in their recommendations, and do not adapt to an ever-changing and evolving investment environment. As soon as you become comfortable, you become average. My youthfulness combined with seven years of experience is a benefit in itself. When you couple that with the fact I work with an advisor who has 30 years of experience and who happens to be my father, it provides the best of both worlds for our clients. When experience meets innovation, great things can happen! The second benefit is the expectations of a younger advisor are always higher, and I get that. If I can’t offer my clients better customer service, create better relationships, gain a better understanding of what things are important to them, and so on, why would they choose to work with me instead of a 20 or 30 year veteran? The answer is they wouldn’t. This drives me to continuously be the best I can be. Not only because I want to, but also because I have to! EK: Tell us a little about Fritts Financial. Eric: As I mentioned, I work closely with my father, Richard Fritts, who is the founder of Fritts and Associates. I launched Fritts Financial about two years ago to bring a specialized set of services to our firm. Fritts Financial offers high-end, fee-based asset management to our clients. For the investor who does not want all their assets in the traditional “pie chart portfolio,” I bring unique management philosophies and strategies to the table. The goals and objectives of our fee-based platforms are different than most, but they seem to be consistent with what our client base is looking for. EK: You mentioned the client base you work with. Tell us a little more about that. Eric: We specialize in working with pre-retirees and retirees ages 55+ with more than $250,000 in investable assets. It has never been our goal to be some things to all people. Instead, we have structured our firm to be all things to some people. People nearing or in retirement have very different goals and objectives than others, and their investments and plan designs should reflect that. That’s where we come in! EK: Help our readers understand your unique approach to financial planning. How is it different? Eric: We are a full-service financial planning firm capable of a wide variety of services. We have three advisors in our office who each have their own skill sets, areas of focus, and, most importantly, they are all
three independent. This is extremely important for our clients, because they know we are going to recommend the best investment options we can find, not what our home office or brokerage firm is pushing! If you are seeking safe and secure investments in your portfolio, we have one of the most knowledgeable professionals in the area in-house. With fixed rates and interest bearing vehicles paying historically low rates, a specialist who knows where to find the best options becomes very important. If your preference is to incorporate stocks, bonds, or mutual funds into your portfolio, we have an independent broker to help our clients acquire the best investments in those categories. We have access to some of the nation’s most well suited private wealth management platforms for our clients. We also offer estate planning advice and coordinate with clients and attorneys we work with to make sure all puzzle pieces align correctly. We work closely with a high-end local CPA firm and have a working relationship with a Social Security Consultation firm that consists of a CPA and retired social security administrator. You could basically say I act as a quarterback for a very strong team we have put together for our clients. Very few firms are structured this way, but we feel the value is priceless.

Relationships are vital to long-term success when it comes to working with any advisor. Success is the result of strong personal relationships, an understanding of the client’s goals, trust, and honesty. For me, success is helping others achieve their investment and retirement dreams.

Buying Technology for Seniors This Holiday Season Finding the perfect gift for mom and dad or grandma and grandpa often seems impossible. If they're like a lot of seniors, they're fairly well settled and don't have long wish lists. Plus, it seems that many of the hottest gift ideas are tech devices, certainly not something that would be of interest, right? Think again. Seniors aren’t as wary of technology as some might think. More than half of the 65 and over population are online and using email. The number is growing as seniors see the advantages of technology, from convenience to safety benefits. That’s good news for kids and grandkids in

desperate need of great gift ideas. Help the seniors in your life manage more from the comfort of their home. A new laptop or tablet can be a valuable tool for communicating with loved ones, managing finances, and even taking care of some shopping. If you’re in the market for a portable computer, there are numerous options. An all-purpose laptop typically offers a larger screen, which can be helpful if eyesight is an issue. UT Veterinary College Offers Pet Memorial Celebration and PAWt-luck Dinner A special day to honor the lives and loss of companion animals In an effort to help pet owners celebrate the lives of their companion animals, both living and dead, Veterinary Social Work (VSW) at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is hosting its winter Pet Memorial Celebration on Friday, December 6, from 6 to 8:30 pm. The event, which is free and open to the
public, allows people to reflect on the impact pets have on their lives. Participants are invited to bring a human-friendly food item to share that reminds them of their animal. Why Older Adults Must Understand Their Flu Vaccine Options and Get Vaccinated With the 2013-2014 flu season officially here, it’s important to consider the single best way to prevent influenza (commonly known as “the flu”) – the flu vaccine. What many older adults don’t know is that the immune system weakens with age, meaning older adults are at a higher risk for flu and related complications. More than 200,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized each year from flu-related illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Adults aged 65 and older typically account for more than half (60%) of these hospitalizations and almost all (90%) flu-related deaths, the CDC reports. To help spread the word about this serious public health issue, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) has launched the second year of Flu + You, an educational program that 16

encourages older adults and their caregivers to learn about the seriousness of the flu, the importance of annual vaccination, and vaccine options for adults 65 and older. Actor Lee Majors, best known for his iconic television role as The Six Million Dollar Man, is joining the campaign this year as a national spokesperson. “According to the CDC, the leading reason older adults do not get the flu vaccine is because they are unaware they need it,” says Lee. “I get the flu shot every year and encourage my peers to do the same. It’s a simple step you can take to help protect yourself from the flu.” The flu can make existing health conditions worse, and it is especially dangerous for people with lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer, conditions that commonly affect older adults. Nationwide, 86% of adults 65 years of age and older have at least one chronic health condition, and approximately 66% of Medicare beneficiaries have two or more chronic conditions, according to the CDC. These conditions put them at increased risk of the flu and flu-related complications, which include hospitalization and even death. “The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine as the single best way to protect yourself from the flu, yet a third of people
65 and older still don’t get vaccinated,” says Dr. Richard Birkel, NCOA Senior Vice President for Healthy Aging and Director of NCOA’s Self-Management Alliance. “As NCOA continues to educate older adults about the flu and the potential severity of the illness, we hope to encourage more people to help protect themselves and their loved ones by getting an annual flu shot.” There are now many types of flu vaccines, with several specifically indicated for certain age groups or immunization needs, including a higher dose flu vaccine, for adults 65 and older, that is designed specifically to address the age-related decline of the immune system. By improving the production of antibodies in older patients, the higher dose vaccine can provide a stronger immune response to the flu than traditional vaccines. Whichever vaccine option is selected, an annual flu shot is a Medicare Part B benefit. This means that the vaccine is covered with no copay for Medicare beneficiaries 65 and older. Older adults and their caregivers can learn more about vaccine options and the importance of getting an annual flu vaccine on the Flu + You website, www.ncoa.org/flu, which features free educational materials, a public service announcement with Lee Majors, and more facts about the flu. New job? Started a family? Retired? If changes occurred in your life, then you’ll want to review your finances before year end. There’s still time to see where you can save some taxes and/or build a little more wealth.
Considered tax loss harvesting? That’s taking capital losses (selling securities worth less than what you paid for them) to offset your shortterm capital gains. If you are in the upper tax brackets, you might want to consider this move to lower your taxable income. Consult a financial professional you trust.1 Can you increase your 401(k) or 403(b) contributions? If you can do this in December,
it will lower your 2013 taxable income. You might be able to qualify for other tax credits or breaks available to those under certain income limits.
Thinking of gifting? In many cases, contributions made to charities or non-profit organizations are partly tax-deductible. You can also reduce the value of your taxable estate by gifting. This year’s gift tax exclusion is $14,000. You can gift up to $14,000 to as many people as you wish, understanding you have a $5.25 million lifetime limit before you are hit with gift taxes.2 Should you convert all or part of a traditional IRA into a Roth IRA? Future withdrawals from traditional IRAs will equal future taxable income. Withdrawals from your Roth IRA are never taxed during your lifetime, assuming you follow the rules. Translation: tax savings tomorrow. Before you convert to a Roth, make sure you have the money to pay taxes on the conversion amount. If you convert and change your mind, the IRS gives you until October 15 of the year after a conversion to undo it.3

Festive Acorn Squash Stuffed with Wild Rice › 2 acorn squash, sliced in half and seeded › 2 cups wild rice › 4 cups vegetable broth › 1/2 cup chopped onion › 2 cloves garlic › 1 celery stalk, sliced › 1 cup chopped mushrooms › 2 Tbsp chopped sage › 1 tsp sea salt › 2 Tbsp olive oil Heat oven to 350. Place seeded squash cut side down in baking dish. Bake for 25 min. In pan, saute onion, mushrooms, garlic, celery, and sage in olive oil for 5 min. Add wild rice, vegetable broth, and salt. Cover and simmer for 40 min. Spoon into partially cooked acorn squash, and bake at 350 for 15 min more or until squash is cooked.
Holiday Rice Salad › 1 cup brown rice › 1 cup wild rice › 1/2 cup red quinoa › 3 ¼ cups water To pan add washed grains and water. Bring to boil and add pinch sea salt. Cook for 50 min. Set aside to cool. To bowl add cooled grains and the following: › 1 cup chopped pecans › 1/2 cup parsely › 1 cup pitted sweet cherries › 1/2 cup pine nuts › 1/2 cup chopped scallions Marinade: › 4 Tbsp olive oil › 4 Tbsp rice syrup › 2 Tbsp vinegar (rice or apple cider) › 1 tsp Italian mixed herbs › 1 tsp sea salt or to taste › 3 Tbsp pomegranate juice Toss together and marinate for 2 hours before serving

Saute for 5 min. Add water and cook for 40 in. Add spinach and salt. Cook for 5 min. Garnish with scallions. Serve with cornbread sticks.

Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain Who doesn't love the smell of a warm kitchen during the holidays? They're designed around food and bringing family, old friends, and new friends together. However, holidays can also be a detriment to your healthy lifestyle and cause you to lose your focus through the end of the year. But they don't have to. Think of fall as the perfect time to reassess the state of your health and prep for the challenges of the holiday season. When it comes to nutrition and avoiding weight gain, keep it simple and easy. Here are some tips to help you do the same.
Bulk up your plate with protein and vegetables The side dishes at most holiday meals are often as good as the turkey or ham, but stuffing and mashed potatoes aren't the best way to fill your plate. One way to avoid weight gain is to build your plate with protein. This should be easy since holiday dinners revolve around meat. Second, fill your plate with side dishes that include vegetables. You may have a little spot left on your plate – use this space for your "indulgence." When you look at your plate, the goal is that the majority is still providing you with good nutrients and reduced carbohydrates.

Use the "fork" trick
Many of us go back for seconds and even third helpings at holiday meals. This year, focus on asking yourself if you're enjoying your food. To help you answer this question, use the fork trick. Once you take a bite of food, place your fork down on the plate and let it go. Chew your food, swallow, and then pick it up again. The key to this trick is letting go of the fork. This will remind you to slow down, enjoy your food, and converse with friends and family.
Avoid the clean plate club
Growing up, many of us were always told "You can't leave the table until you finish everything on your plate," and, inevitably, we spent many nights sitting alone at the dinner table. But now it’s acceptable to eat until full, and, if your plate is not clean, it's OK. Focus on one plate of food, slow down, and be careful not to overeat. Overfeeding is never really a healthy thing to do.
Share your dessert with a loved one
After a satisfying meal, it’s hard to avoid the sweet smells of pumpkin or warm apple pie. If you choose not to skip dessert, share a small slice with a loved one or new friend. If you’re hosting, designate one family member to bring dessert to limit the endless selection of pies and reduce the urge to over indulge.
Get moving and step outside
Start your holiday with a new tradition this year, and gather the family to do something active. Take a walk to a local park, put together a family friendly flag football game, rake up the leaves in the yard (and jump into them), or encourage the family to sign up for a run/walk event. Holidays are a time to be thankful for family, friends, and everything in between. Savor the moment, really take time to taste your food, get out and have some fun, and avoid the holiday weight gain.

Fashion experts from two of the Art Institutes schools share six of the top fashion trends and how you can use them to make the most of the pieces already in your closet.
Animal Print
Look at any magazine and you’re going to see animal print. Everything is in animal print. Whether black and white or a crazy color, this trend can be found on garments, shoes, bags, and scarves. Adding an animal print piece to any outfit in your closet will make you look “of the moment.”

Dresses

Hats are also making a comeback. They are an easy and practical update to any outfit, with a variety to suit all face shapes. Scarves are another trend in this season’s accessories. For daytime, wear a long woven scarf wrapped around multiple times, and for evening, add a beaded scarf to a black dress.
Tweed
Tweeds are a very important fashion story this season. Each year a variety of tweeds grace the runways of Fashion Week, but this year they are stealing the spotlight, especially in black and white versions of houndstooth, Donegal tweed, and herringbone. A tweed jacket is the perfect piece over something old, especially when it’s a colorful tweed over a colorful outfit. Other options include tweed scarves and even handbags.

Historic Ramsey House is taking reservations for our Wreath Making Workshop on Saturday, December 7, at 12:30 pm. Julia has gotten extra help this year so we can expand our class to include pomanders and swags along with our traditional fresh green wreaths. There will be hot mulled cider and holiday treats to welcome you between 12:30 and 1:00, and the class will start promptly at 1:00. As in the past, you will be asked to provide your own garden gloves to protect your hands and your own garden shears. (Household scissors are not usually able to cut the heavy stems.) If you have any favorite evergreens or berries from your yard that you want to add to your arrangement, you are welcome to bring them. The Giving Season lot has been written about the origins of the tradition of giving gifts for the celebration of Christmas. Many attribute the practice to St. Nicholas in Turkey during the fourth century, who gave gifts to the poor children, and by the end of the 10th century, most countries were participating in the idea of gift giving on this date. Creating a Second Paycheck in Retirement is Easier Than You Might Imagine As I talk with clients who are approaching retirement or already retired, their number one fear is running out of money. And given the uncertainties of today’s stock market and rising health costs, it’s understandable. While Social Security provides retirement income, we’re seeing a decline in the number of companies offering a second pension paycheck. It’s become our own responsibility to fill the gap between Social Security and the monthly amount of income we need. A traditional school of thought is that we withdraw a “safe” 4% of our investment assets each year that will sustain us for our lifetimes. But that strategy is not fail-safe if the market drops, as there may not be enough time to recover before you need the money. The good news is that insurance companies have been listening, and they’ve introduced products that provide guaranteed lifetime income. Think of it as a do-it-yourself pension. By reallocating a portion of your IRA or 401(k) into a fixed index annuity with a lifetime income option, you Yvonne Marsh are creating a tax-deferred, principal protected investment that will provide a second paycheck you cannot outlive. Conversely, if you pass away prematurely, your remaining investment (plus interest, less fees) passes to your heirs. Expect to pay between a 0.75% and 0.95% fee for this income guarantee. December in the Garden December is a hectic
time of year. For those days when you simply cannot deal with the holiday chaos any longer, here’s a rundown of reasons to get you out of the house: ›› You can plant trees and shrubs as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Newly planted trees and shrubs will continue to need water in order to survive the winter. Established deciduous shrubs will probably not need water unless the ground becomes really dry, but evergreens continue to lose water through transpiration. If we go longer than a couple of weeks without significant rainfall, drag out the hose. ›› If your yard is dull and colorless, you can plant pansies. They won’t be as full as if you had planted them earlier, but they’ll be great in the spring. You can also set a few pots on your porch for a cheerful look on gloomy winter days. ›› Clean up beds. This is especially important if you had insect and disease problems.
›› Heavy layers of leaves need to be removed from beds and lawns to prevent suffocation. Light layers can be run over by the lawn mower and left to decompose. ›› Empty your pots and containers into garden beds or compost piles if you’re not using them for fall/winter color. Terra cotta and cheaper ceramics need to be stored in a protected location. Sturdier pots can be kept out and turned into winter decorations. Plant them with hardy plants, or fill them with greenery. ›› Keep bird feeders clean and full, and keep baths rinsed. Metal and plastic baths can stay outside, but ceramic and clay need to be drained and stored to prevent cracking. Since many of you will be decorating your homes, let’s go over some options you might not have considered for your holiday decor: ›› Walk outside and see what you have available for holiday decorations before you start spending money unnecessarily.

Magnolias, hollies, hemlocks, boxwoods, pines, and other plants are great for fresh greenery. Cut branches, and immediately place in water. Woody stems should be crushed on the ends to let in more water. They’ll last longer if you soak them overnight. ›› If you’re lucky, you have camellias that are blooming now. If not, the flowers from hydrangeas are another great natural decoration. They even hold up well to spray-painting. ›› Don’t forget the nuts, seeds, and berries! Nandina berries, pinecones, rose hips, acorns, magnolia seed pods, and a host of other things can be used for accent. Beauty berry can also provide unusual color to your decorations. ›› If you buy a freshly cut Christmas tree, buy from someone you trust. Many trees in box stores and tree lots are cut in late October or early November and will struggle to last through the holidays. Ours are cut on November 25th in West Jefferson, NC, by Hudler Tree Farms. Dale Hudler is a great guy and does a wonderful job with his trees. ›› Poinsettias are another plant that should be bought from someone reputable, because they’re very easy to kill. If you buy one from the box stores, it’s probably half dead when you get it. We grow these temperamental beauties at our farm in Fentress County, and they receive wonderful care. (We have provided the poinsettias for the Fantasy of Trees for several years, so you know we do a great job.) The number one thing you need to remember is it WILL NOT SURVIVE cold weather. Anything below 50 degrees will injure it, even if the exposure time is short. It doesn’t even like to be near windows or doors where drafts will hit it. It’s also fragile and shouldn’t be placed anywhere it can be bumped, brushed against, or kicked. Poinsettias should always be placed in a sleeve for transportation, but the sleeve should be removed as soon as you get it home. Water when the top inch is dry, and don’t let it stand in water. It may be grown as a houseplant, but I don’t suggest trying to make it bloom again next year. The process is tedious, and the blossoms won’t be nearly as pretty as they were when you bought it. ›› Keep us in mind as a source for gifts during the holidays. The Athens Area Council for the Arts Seeks Submissions for a College Student Art Show The Visual Arts committee of the Athens Area Council for the Arts seeks submissions from regional college art students for a curated exhibit to be on display at The Arts Center in Athens from January 27 through March 3, 2014. All college students in East Tennessee (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to submit works for consideration between now and December 13, 2013.
All media and subject matter are acceptable, though entrants should be aware that this exhibit will be held at a community arts center that is open to all ages at all times. Interested artists may submit three pieces for $10. To be considered for the show, students must submit their work as outlined in the prospectus, which may be picked up in person at The Arts Center or downloaded from www.athens artscouncil.org. Payment of the entry fee is required with submission of artwork and may be paid in person, via mail, or online. The entry fees will fund the cash prizes
to be awarded to first, second, and third place winners. The Visual Arts committee presents six to twelve exhibitions annually, only one of which – an annual juried art competition and exhibition – is typically open to the public for entries. Oak Ridge Playhouse Welcomes Back
“Annie” “Little Orphan Annie” may have disappeared from the comic pages of American newspapers, much like newspapers themselves, but her spirited message of hope lives on thanks to Broadway and the beloved musical that bears her name. To kick off the holiday season, she returns to Oak Ridge Playhouse once again. oasting one of Broadway’s
most memorable scores, including “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and the ever optimistic “Tomorrow,” the original Broadway production of Annie opened in 1977, winning Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Now produced all around the world, it is ranked among the top 20 longest running shows in Broadway history and continues to be one of the most successful musicals ever.
As familiar as most of us are with the spunky orphan determined to find her parents, there is always another generation that is new to the story of the adorable red-headed Annie who was left as a baby on the steps of the New York City Municipal Orphanage. After years of toiling under the iron fist of the embittered Miss Hannigan, Annie escapes and ends up a guest at the home of the world’s wealthiest man, Oliver Warbucks. But even living in the lap of luxury doesn’t deter Annie from her goal of knowing who her real parents are. “It’s interesting how relevant the show is today,” says Managing Director Reggie Law, who is directing “Annie” for the fourth time in his career (his third at the Playhouse.) “It takes place during the Great Depression when there was so much economic suffering and dissatisfaction with the government. Who among us has not held onto a dream of the sun coming out tomorrow?” Presented by URS/CH2M Oak Ridge LLC, the Playhouse offers up a sparkling and attractive production featuring a cast led by Rylee Griffis as Annie and Dan Maxwell as Daddy

Town of Farragut Opens New
Synthetic Turf Athletic Field On November 7th, it was official. Farragut Mayor Ralph McGill, along with members of the Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Town of Farragut staff, and various volunteer committee members, cut the ribbon for the first synthetic turf athletic field at a public park in the Knoxville area. During the past almost 34 years, a major focus and strength of the Town of Farragut is the dedication to the development of parks, greenways, and recreational opportunities for its citizens and visitors. The Town’s elected officials and staff are thrilled to offer this valuable facility to the community.

rectangular field is housed in Farragut’s Mayor Bob Leonard Park, a 50-acre premier sports complex located off Watt Road that serves numerous adult and youth athletic clubs. Mayor Bob Leonard Park is a multi-use facility offering a multitude of athletic and recreational opportunities, including nine lighted baseball, softball and rectangular fields, three lighted sand volleyball courts, a lighted paved walk trail, and an ADA accessible playground. The new synthetic turf field was one of the oldest fields at the park in need of extensive repairs due to years of use for soccer, football, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, and more. The original plan developed by Town of Farragut staff was to renovate the field with natural turf and new irrigation; however, the Town was fortunate to receive a State of Tennessee Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant of up to $250,000 to instead renovate the field as a synthetic turf field. This LPRF grant is administered by the Recreation Educational Services Division of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The opening of the synthetic turf field is not only a momentous

occasion for the Town of Farragut and the Knoxville area as a whole, but also for the State of Tennessee, as this is the first synthetic turf field funded by a state grant. “We’re very excited that the public will now have access to the synthetic turf field at our park,” said Farragut Parks and Leisure Services Director Sue Stuhl. “This field is an excellent addition to our recreational facilities, and we’re proud to offer this year-round use facility to the community.” As Sue states, the overarching benefit of a synthetic turf field is it allows for yearround play during all but extreme weather. Natural turf fields must be closed during the winter months for maintenance and repair. Constructed by PLAYRITE – the premier sports and recreation construction company in Tennessee – the synthetic turf field boasts the following impressive statistics: • 27 rolls of turf were used on this field. Each roll measures approximately 15 feet wide by 185 feet in length for a total of 4,845 feet in total length. • The field contains more than 74 million feet of yarn – or blades of grass – which is equal to just over 14 thousand miles. • Approximately 20,000 tires were recycled into crumb-rubber for this field, which is the in-fill material between the blades of synthetic grass.
• This field contains more than 213,500 pounds (106 tons) of rubber and 142,000 pounds (71 tons) of sand. The synthetic turf field joins Farragut’s established family of park facilities, including numerous natural turf athletic fields, seven picnic pavilions, three playgrounds, a splash pad, a fishing pond, and much more at Anchor, Campbell Station, Mayor Bob Leonard, and McFee parks. In an effort to make Farragut more livable and marketable, the Town also continues to add pedestrian linkages throughout the community and currently boasts several miles of trails on the Grigsby Chapel, McFee, Parkside, and Turkey Creek greenways. Farragut’s commitment to providing high quality recreational opportunities also includes adult sand volleyball and softball leagues, a dozen community events each year, and quarterly arts, educational, and fitness programs at the Town Hall. winter is no small feat. It takes time and planning to make sure your family and your home are ready to brave the elements. But is your car as ready as you are? If you haven't thought about preparations for your vehicle, these simple tips will help you prepare for the colder months ahead.
» Check your tires
You depend on your tires more during the winter than any other season. So before the roads get slick, check your tires to be sure they aren’t worn and that they are properly inflated. You should be able to find the proper tire pressure on the inside of your driver’s side door. Once you’re sure your tire pressure is appropriate, make a note to check again later in the winter. Cold air will cause the air in your tires to compress and may cause your tires to lose pressure.

» Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash
Putting your car through the car wash during the sloppiest season of the year may seem a strange idea, but a thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements.
» Check fluids
It’s good practice to stay on top of fluids such as oil, windshield washer, or transmission fluid. But in the winter, no fluid is more important than your coolant, because if you’re out of coolant, you’re out of heat. Your owner’s manual will tell you how much coolant you need as well and provide the correct blend. It’s also never a bad idea to keep an additional bottle of coolant in your car for emergencies.
» Test your battery
A lack of coolant will stop your heater from working, and so will a dead battery. Before you head out this winter, be sure your battery is working properly. No one wants to be stranded by the side of the road with a dead battery, and, in the cold winter months, being stranded could be dangerous.
» Check your wipers
You checked the wiper fluid along with your other fluids, but don’t forget the wipers themselves. Replace old wiper blades, and make sure to have a reservoir full of wiper fluid.
» Check your brakes
Your brakes will work harder once the icy conditions of winter set in. Make sure they are up to the task by bringing your vehicle in to your mechanic for a thorough brake inspection.
» Keep a winter emergency kit
Sometimes all the preparation in the world can’t prevent a winter emergency. If you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, a winter survival kit can be very helpful. Include an ice scraper/brush, extra blankets or clothes – including hats and gloves – snacks and bottled water, and a first aid kit. A small shovel can come in handy if you get stuck, and a bag of cat litter can be used to provide needed traction for your tires. Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability, and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes. By planning ahead, you can ensure that your family and your car will be in for a smooth ride all winter long.

Tennessee Overhill:
Home to 50 Waterfalls eople are drawn to the southeast corner of Tennessee from near and far to explore the beautiful natural landscapes of the Tennessee Overhill region, a three county area that includes the southern half of the Cherokee National Forest. One of the major draws to this area is the many waterfalls located throughout the forest. There are more than 50 waterfalls ranging from five feet to 130 feet high. Some are easily accessible, and others, due to their remote locations, require a hike. Choosing which waterfall to see is the greatest challenge. The spectacular 90-foot Bald River Falls (GPS: 35° 19.44’N, 84° 10.357’W) can be seen from the bridge on Forest Service (FS) road #210, a paved road just a few miles from Tellico Plains. Have your camera handy, because a photo from the bridge with the falls behind you will be one of your trip’s favorites. Located in Chilhowee Recreation Area, Benton Falls (GPS: 35° 8.428’N, 84° 35.766’W) is a 65-foot waterfall with water cascading down step-like rocks. The three-mile roundtrip hike is rated easy/moderate. From Ocoee Scenic Byway (Hwy 64), take FS road #77 to Chilhowee Recreation Area ($3.00 day use fee). Trailhead can be found in the parking lot. Forty-five-foot Coker Creek Falls (GPS: 35° 11,835’N, 84° 22.217’W), with a series of waterfalls/cascades ranging from eight feet to 20 feet high, is a kayaker’s and photographer’s favorite. Stop at the Coker Creek Welcome 60

Bald River Falls Center/Post Office on Hwy 68 to get directions. The hike is around three miles, but you don’t need to make the entire trip to see a waterfall. Rated easy/moderate. Other lesser known falls are Turtletown Falls (GPS: 35° 9.834’N, 84° 21.166’W) and Falls Branch Falls (GPS: 35° 20.634’N, 84° 17.172’W). Turtletown Falls is 40 feet high and flows over a large ledge, then separates into two falls. A bonus waterfall, Lower Turtletown Falls, may be seen if you hike a little further downstream from the main falls. On Hwy 68, turn at the Farner post office, cross the RR, turn left on Duggan Road, and bear left on Farner Road. The entrance to the falls, FSR #1166, is the first road on the right. Follow the dirt road for 1.5 miles down to the fall’s parking lot. The trail is three miles roundtrip and rated easy/moderate. Falls Branch Falls (GPS: 35° 20.634’N, 84° 17.172’W) is an 80-foot waterfall located off the National Scenic Byway – Cherohala Skyway Hwy 165. At the Rattlesnake Rock Parking Area, hike about 100 feet (take the left fork) to the Falls Branch Trail #87. Once at the falls, follow the creek downstream to see
several cascades. Roundtrip is about three miles. Rated moderate. Bonus: Located in a wilderness area, you can see a very impressive old-growth forest site with huge trees – poplars, buckeyes, birches, hemlocks, and black cherries. Keep in mind that waterfalls are beautiful, but they’re not to be climbed on. They can be dangerous, and in some cases, people have been seriously injured while climbing on waterfalls. Avoid stepping into fast flowing water, but if you must walk into a creek, be aware, as moss covered rocks can be very slippery. Be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. Enjoy the experience while you’re visiting, and take a photo home to remember your trip. The Tennessee Overhill has directions to most waterfalls in the southern Cherokee National Forest. The Blount Mansion
Looking Back and Moving Forward he Blount Mansion
was one of the first wooden frame houses built west of the Alleghenies. The original structure was built in 1792 by William Blount, first governor of the Southwest Territory and signer of the United States Constitution. The Tennessee Founders wrote our State Constitution here in Governor Blount’s office in 1796. The home played a role in early Statehood, saw the strife and division caused by the Civil War, and had an interesting role as home to several families during Knoxville’s river-town era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1925, the home had deteriorated and was threatened

with demolition by downtown development. In 1930, a group of dedicated women purchased and saved the Blount Mansion from becoming a parking lot for the Andrew Johnson Hotel. When the property was purchased, the Blount Mansion Association was formed to preserve and interpret the home for generations to come. In the 1960s, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Preservation efforts did not end in the 20th century, however. Because the structure is more than 220 years old, the BMA recently began a large-scale preservation and restoration to preserve the integrity and viability of the historic home for another 200 years. The project, which comes with a Photography provided by Knox Heritage
price tag of around $1.9 million, will ensure that the house and its stories will remain available to the public for years to come. In 2010, the Blount Mansion Association received a Save America’s Treasures grant from the National Parks Service and the United States Department of the Interior. The State of Tennessee also contributed to the project, and capital campaign donors and members have been invaluable to the project. The preservation of the Blount Mansion and the outbuildings includes foundation stabilization of the historic house, storm windows for all buildings, upgraded security and fire suppression, heating and air systems, new roofs on all historic buildings, and more. In addition to the construction, the Blount Mansion will receive both a historic structures report and cultural landscape report, which will help the staff produce an authentic interpretation of the buildings and people who lived on-site. The architect for this project is Joseph K. Oppermann of Joseph K. Oppermann Architect (JKOA) in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Assisting on the project is Henry Lafferty of Lafferty Architecture, PC. The landscape architect for the project is William Shealy of The Jaeger Company based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Johnson and Galyon of Knoxville are the general contractors for construction at the mansion. Mr. Oppermann described the Blount Mansion in his reports as “one of the most important historic buildings in the state as well as the nation.” He also explained that the mansion “played a central role in the early history of the Southwest Territory and formation of the State of Tennessee.” Starting September 9, 2013, the Mansion and grounds closed to tours to safely complete the restoration project. During construction on the Blount Mansion grounds, the Visitors Center remains open from 9:30-5 Tuesday through Saturday. At the Visitors Center, guests can view a special exhibition, Furniture on the Frontier, and learn more about preservation

efforts. Furniture on the Frontier shows what life may have been like for the Blount family in the wilderness Knoxville in the 1790s. The Blount family brought a certain level of prestige with them, which was reflected in their home as well as in their belongings. The artifacts that are on display represent the lifestyle that the Blount family enjoyed. The exhibit is free to the public, with a suggested donation to help with renovation costs. The restoration is scheduled to end early in 2014, and the BMA will have a special event to celebrate the preservation efforts and the future of our site. Four Leaf Peat Traditional Irish Band
Four Leaf Peat (FLP) was born out of the Irish traditional music scene in Knoxville and is dedicated to honoring and preserving the spirit of Irish music. While grounded in tradition and influenced by Ireland’s traditional pipers, fiddlers, and singers, FLP also bows a hat to the more recent innovators of Irish music such as The Bothy Band, Planxty, Dervish, and Lunasa. After playing together at the local session for some time, this group came together to play a benefit concert in 2004 to save the historic Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville and has been going strong ever since!

Self-Employment Success: Not a Game of Chance ’ve been at this for 30
years. Self-employment, that is. I’ve literally observed firsthand thousands of small businesses during three decades, many hundreds of whom failed. Sadly, most of the failures were preventable. I am often asked by eager, firsttime entrepreneurs if I think they’ll be successful. My response is always the same. Your success is entirely up to you. If you view success in business as a game of chance, like a roll of the dice, you’ve likely already failed. Success in small business is a decision. An uncompromised commitment to succeed. A carefully thought out and well implemented strategy that ignores the odds. I know what the odds are against success in the first, fifth, and tenth years in business, but success-oriented
entrepreneurs ignore the odds. Insane? Not really. Keep in mind that there are no statistics for the serious entrepreneur with that fire in their eyes, commitment, and bulldog determination to adhere their strategy for success despite their circumstances. Need an example? How about three? Three first-time business owners that refused to roll the dice but instead took on the challenges of entrepreneurship and won despite being in the middle of the nation’s deepest recession. How about Clinton Glass, who not only thrived throughout the recession, but also totally transitioned their company’s product line? Or there’s Granite Transformations, who, although stumbled slightly out of the starting gate, implemented an entirely new business model that has catapulted them to the number one franchise in the Granite Transformations’ family nationally. Then
there’s Slamdot, launched in a recession, yet thriving, relying on a business model that successfully combines affordable websites, genuine customer relationships, and a remarkable grasp of successoriented marketing principles. Luck? In your dreams. These entrepreneurs faced the very same challenges that confront every other small business owner daily. They just refused to accept an outcome that would be determined solely on the basis of luck or chance. Winners make their own luck!
The Most of Christmas’s Past B U SIN E SS B ASI C S by Beth Townsend We say it annually: “This year, let’s
don’t overdo Christmas.” It’s hard each year not to get carried away with shopping, giving, stressing about lists, recipes, and decorating. As a child, Christmas was magical. We were a big family of five children being raised by a single mom. We struggled, but we made it. Somehow Christmas always seemed to produce a miracle. Each year was better than the last, and we never quite understood how. While the budget numbers didn’t add up, the presents did. We could wrap anything and call it a gift, and we were overjoyed with each one. The old movie “The Ghosts of Christmas’s Past” takes the main character back through painful memories of years gone by. The moral of the story is to make good decisions, take nothing for granted, and remember that you can’t go back and undo what has been done. My memories are different from yours but are just as important. To make the most of Christmas’s past, look back long enough to learn how to make the most of Christmas present.
Looking back • Cherish the good memo-
ries, and forgive the bad ones. We all had
imperfect families, and the way to overcome past obstacles is to recreate new memories. Don’t focus on what you don’t have or what you didn’t do. There’s time for that when you start the New Year and establish goals.
Looking out • What matters to you? Who matters the most to you? Answer by analyzing how you spend your time. Don’t say what’s important; do what’s important. Christmas is a perfect time to carve out special times for special memories. Don’t get so caught up in busyness that you can’t linger in spontaneous moments with others. Sometimes unhurried conversation is precisely what those closest to you would wish for. Looking forward • Overdo Christmas, by all means, but not with lists. Quiet evenings by a fire. Decorating the tree. Silly gift exchanges at work where others can laugh and have a good time deepening relationships. Relax! If you’re too busy to enjoy other people, you’re too busy! What most people desperately want, regardless of age, is a strong sense of significance. To be valued and heard. To be appreciated for
who they are and what they do. To come home to a place where they feel comfortable being themselves. To work in a place where others value their work and contribution. Giving and receiving gifts is exciting. Seeing the faces of children light up on Christmas morning is priceless. Eating too much, well, it’s a great reason to feast. Just don’t overlook meaningful moments that last forever. When is the last time you just had fun? Let go, lighten up, and laugh a little. If your family and co-workers are like mine, there’s plenty of funny to go around. Give more by shopping less. Making the most of Christmas’s past means making the most of what you have today.

Five Tips to Make Your Family Holidays Stress Free The holidays will be here before you know it, and that means family time. Not just any family time, but family time with your in-laws. Regardless of whether you enjoy spending time with your in-laws or not, getting ready to spend the holidays with them can be stressful. Holiday time with your in-laws doesn’t have to get the best of you. Shifting the way you see your situation will make it easier for you to shift the emotional feelings that go along with it. When you can “lighten” how you perceive things, you’ll actually be able to experience family in a different way. These tips can help: 1. Be a team player
If your in-law is coming to your house, make sure you include her in the different things occurring throughout the day. Treat her as you would one of your friends who is attending your holiday gathering. If you’re going

to her house, ask her if she’d like some help. Whether she does or doesn’t, stay around and talk with her; let her know you’re interested in her.
2. Don’t take things personally
Everyone is more stressed during the holidays, including your in-law. As long as you treat her with respect and kindness, then you can be certain her actions are not about you!
3. Find the humor
Determine to find humor in what your inlaw says or does. When you do, you create an emotional distance that helps you take her actions less seriously. By finding the humor, you’ll also have some great stories to tell your friends later.
4. Find some “down time” for yourself Find some quiet time for yourself so you can
re-energize and regain your strength. Even just a few minutes by yourself can be just what you need to get your energy back.
5. Establish ground rules in advance
Before arriving at your in-law’s house, you and your spouse should have already decided how long to stay. Let the family know when you arrive that you’ll need to leave at a particular time, and then leave at that time. If your spouse wants to stay longer, take two cars. It’s Not Our Job Believe it or not, it’s not our job to correct others. Really! For some reason, many of us believe that we have an obligation to set the record straight or correct others when we believe they are mistaken with their information, opinion, or overall approach to things. How many times have we all been guilty of saying something like, “That’s not how you do it,” “Why are you doing it that way” or “Well, that’s not true,” etc.? The truth is, it’s really rude when we correct others unless we are their actual parents. Let me make a few clarifications. Standing up for what we believe is right or stopping a wrong from being committed towards another human being is, of course, expected of us all. This is very different than going around to our family and friends being the “accuracy police” on everything they do, say, and believe. I recently spent time with a few friends, and after some time went by and a few disagreements occurred, I realized that what was causing contention was the need for a couple of friends to point out every time they disagreed with what was being said. is a time and place for making our opinions known, but during friendly, casual conversation is not one of those times.
Pointing out others’ faults is the quickest way to becoming the person everyone wants to avoid. It’s also not polite to point out everything your spouse does that you don’t like or disagree with. This wears a marriage down and contributes to resentment and bitterness. Yes, there are occasions where it is necessary to express disappointment in certain behavior, but these times should be the exception, not the norm. What if, instead of pointing out all the things that those around you did wrong, you recognized them for the things they did right? (Of course this is only your opinion.)
Usually most people respond better to compliments rather than complaints and negative comments. If you really want to strive to be gentlemen and ladies, then it is important to avoid being someone that others try to avoid. Pointing out others’ faults is the quickest way to becoming the person everyone wants to avoid. Instead, compliment and praise. If you feel you really can’t do this, then choose to not say anything at all. Choosing to speak should be carefully evaluated with thought going into what your purpose is, what you think the outcome will be if you speak, and if it’s worth it. May we all strive to have relationships that bring great joy to us and others.
