About the Cover

From the Publisher December is a great month to reflect back on the current year and to start making plans for the coming year. Why wait until January to begin working on 2014 resolutions? As business owners, my husband, Tom, and I periodically evaluate how our business is tracking and make adjustments as necessary. It’s not advisable to get “comfortable” with how you do business. Every so often changes need to be made to a business so it can continue to grow. That also applies on a personal level, especially as it relates to personal finances and financial well-being. This month we’re pleased to highlight Eric Fritts, President of Fritts Financial. If these last few years have been challenging in planning and managing your financial

future, you’re not alone. Most of us do not possess the skills to successfully navigate life’s financial uncertainties, and that’s why we encourage you to visit the team at Fritts Financial. Their expertise can help you put together a financial plan that can carry you comfortably into retirement. Their focus on relationships is a vital part of achieving success in working with any advisor. Read Eric’s perspective on the financial uncertainties confronting us and how Fritts Financial can help you in moving forward through 2014 and beyond. Finally, we at Everything Knoxville look to continue to serve our community in 2014 by highlighting the best Knoxville has to offer. We would like to wish all of you, our readers and advertisers, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. PUBLISHER + EDITOR IN CHIEF Enjoy the season!

Navigating Your Retirement Future abeled the Great Recession, Americans have been told by experts that this most recent recession officially ended several years ago. But, for the average American, little has changed, and for those who have already retired or may be nearing retirement, the level of uncertainty they must navigate going forward remains at an all-time high. Ridiculously low interest rates on investments, nagging high unemployment rates, skyrocketing federal debt, huge stock market fluctuations, and rising health care costs are just a few of the many challenges facing existing and would-be retirees who hope to successfully navigate the uncertainties confronting them in what they had once seen as their golden years. With few exceptions, most of us do not possess the required financial skills needed to create the type of comprehensive retirement planning necessary to successfully navigate life’s uncertainties. As a result, the majority of Americans enter retirement without the prerequisite planning needed to assure their financial futures. This month Everything Knoxville is pleased to share with you its recent interview with Knoxville-based financial planner and president of Fritts Financial, Eric Fritts. Eric shares many of his thoughts regarding the financial uncertainties confronting each of us and possible strategies for moving forward. 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

EK: There has always been financial uncertainty in our lives. How has the most recent recession changed that equation? Eric: This recession has been more complex than most. Most market corrections do not happen at the magnitude in which the last one did. The last correction happened quickly, too! This caused many government programs to be quickly implemented to try and stop the bleeding and fuel the recovery. The good news is we hit all-time market highs around the middle of the year and have been continuing to climb since then. The uncertainty comes from all the government programs and aids that have been put in place to get us there. We have yet to see what long-term effects this will have on our economy. Oftentimes the best intentions have unappealing trade-offs, such as low interest rates for investors. Uncertainty is nothing new. We are just confronted with a higher level of uncertainty at the present. This should not prevent us from

Left to right: Michael Fritts, Thomas Wormsley, Richard Fritts, Eric Fritts, Carita Baker, Denise Curcio, and Lauren Cook

participating in investment strategies to help us obtain our goals and objectives. We should, however, make sure our strategies are well thought out and monitored closely. EK: What would you say is the biggest mistake being made by many of us who are attempting to secure our retirement future? Eric: I would say not working with an advisor who specializes in working with people who are in whatever phase of life they’re in. You have to understand that, during your accumulation phase of life, your investment strategies should be very different than they are during your preservation and distribution phase. I see many retirees and advisors alike who believe a slight shift in asset allocations is all that needs to be considered once an individual retires. Do that, pick a time to start taking social security, get your Medicare, and then start sipping Mai Tais on the beach. They do not understand the ins and outs of a cohesive retirement strategy and all the different aspects that need Photos by D. Roberts Photography

to be considered. Oftentimes it’s because they are not working with an advisor who is experienced in this highly specialized field. EK: Do you feel the average American waits too long to begin planning for retirement? Eric: Absolutely. With most employers completely phasing out pension and defined benefit plans, pulling back on 401(k)s and defined contribution plans, and the long-term sustainability of social security being questioned, it’s extremely important for people to take responsibility of their retirement future. The earlier you start to plan, the better off you’ll be in the future. EK: You are younger than most financial planners. How does that benefit your clients? Eric: I would say the first benefit would be my ability to think outside the box and adjust to new circumstances. Many advisors get stuck in their ways, stuck in their recommendations, and do not adapt to an ever-changing and evolving investment environment. As soon as you become comfortable, you become average. My youthfulness combined with seven years of experience is a benefit in itself. When you couple that with the fact I work with an advisor who has 30 years of experience and who happens to be my father, it provides the best of both worlds for our clients. When experience meets innovation, great things can happen! The second benefit is the expectations of a younger advisor are always higher, and I get that. If I can’t offer my clients better customer service, create better relationships, gain a better understanding of what things are important to them, and so on, why would they choose to work with me instead of a 20 or 30 year veteran? The answer is they wouldn’t. This drives me to continuously be the best I can be. Not only because I want to, but also because I have to! EK: Tell us a little about Fritts Financial. Eric: As I mentioned, I work closely with my father, Richard Fritts, who is the founder of Fritts and Associates. I launched Fritts Financial about two years ago to bring a specialized set of services to our firm. Fritts Financial offers high-end, fee-based asset management to our clients. For the investor who does not want all their assets in the traditional “pie chart portfolio,” I bring unique management philosophies and strategies to the table. The goals and objectives of our fee-based platforms are different than most, but they seem to be consistent with what our client base is looking for. EK: You mentioned the client base you work with. Tell us a little more about that. Eric: We specialize in working with pre-retirees and retirees ages 55+ with more than $250,000 in investable assets. It has never been our goal to be some things to all people. Instead, we have structured our firm to be all things to some people. People nearing or in retirement have very different goals and objectives than others, and their investments and plan designs should reflect that. That’s where we come in! EK: Help our readers understand your unique approach to financial planning. How is it different? Eric: We are a full-service financial planning firm capable of a wide variety of services. We have three advisors in our office who each have their own skill sets, areas of focus, and, most importantly, they are all

three independent. This is extremely important for our clients, because they know we are going to recommend the best investment options we can find, not what our home office or brokerage firm is pushing! If you are seeking safe and secure investments in your portfolio, we have one of the most knowledgeable professionals in the area in-house. With fixed rates and interest bearing vehicles paying historically low rates, a specialist who knows where to find the best options becomes very important. If your preference is to incorporate stocks, bonds, or mutual funds into your portfolio, we have an independent broker to help our clients acquire the best investments in those categories. We have access to some of the nation’s most well suited private wealth management platforms for our clients. We also offer estate planning advice and coordinate with clients and attorneys we work with to make sure all puzzle pieces align correctly. We work closely with a high-end local CPA firm and have a working relationship with a Social Security Consultation firm that consists of a CPA and retired social security administrator. You could basically say I act as a quarterback for a very strong team we have put together for our clients. Very few firms are structured this way, but we feel the value is priceless.

Clients Jim & Marie Smith with Eric Fritts EK: How can our readers learn more about Fritts Financial? Eric: You can start by visiting us online at www.FrittsFinancial.com,

or follow us on our Fritts Financial business page on Facebook. If you would like to receive our weekly newsletter via email, just send us an email to office@frittsfinancial.com and request to be added to our list. We’ll share market updates, tax savings tips, and other news that we believe will be beneficial and interesting to you. Also, we offer a variety of educational workshops throughout the year you may elect to attend. But the best way to learn more about us would be to call the office and set up a time to come in and talk to us. You can sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee, and we can get to know each other. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to share? Eric: It’s all about relationships. A lot of people say it, but why is it important? If you develop a strong relationship with clients based upon open and honest communication and education, fiscal prosperity becomes very obtainable. Relationships are vital to long-term success when it comes to working with any advisor. Success is the result of strong personal relationships, an understanding of the client’s goals, trust, and honesty. For me, success is helping others achieve their investment and retirement dreams.

Buying Technology for Seniors This Holiday Season Finding the perfect gift for mom and dad or grandma and grandpa often seems impossible. If they're like a lot of seniors, they're fairly well settled and don't have long wish lists. Plus, it seems that many of the hottest gift ideas are tech devices, certainly not something that would be of interest, right? Think again. Seniors aren’t as wary of technology as some might think. More than half of the 65 and over population are online and using email. The number is growing as seniors see the advantages of technology, from convenience to safety benefits. That’s good news for kids and grandkids in

10

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

desperate need of great gift ideas. Help the seniors in your life manage more from the comfort of their home. A new laptop or tablet can be a valuable tool for communicating with loved ones, managing finances, and even taking care of some shopping. More than the gift itself, they’ll appreciate the time you take to show them the ropes with a video chat program or online bill pay services, not to mention getting them connected with family and friends on social media. If you’re in the market for a portable computer, there are numerous options. An all-purpose laptop typically offers a larger screen, which can be helpful if eyesight is an issue. At 4.5 to 8 pounds, they are ideal for the home but can be carried to the corner coffee shop without much hassle. Netbooks are smaller and more lightweight, good for some simple web

browsing and email, but they’re often not robust enough to handle streaming video or multiple applications running simultaneously. Tablets have taken the market by storm, and new devices are being designed with seniors in mind. Provide seniors – and yourself – with the gift of a cell phone and peace of mind. Even if they don’t text or surf the Internet, your loved ones can benefit from having a convenient way to call for help in an emergency. Some phones come equipped with large and backlit buttons and with hearing aid compatibility. Also, you can find no contract phone service with flexible plans. Of course, some seniors may be ready for smartphone features at their fingertips, including powerful cameras for capturing memories of the grandchildren. As with other products, consider a device with a larger screen size to avoid eye strain. Also, keep the interface simple. Apple products tend to be fairly intuitive, so an iPhone may be a contender. If shopping for avid readers, consider giving an e-reader, and load some classics to get them started. The Amazon Kindle starts with a 6-inch screen, but larger sizes (up to 9.7 inches) are featured on certain models. Seniors can increase fonts to a comfortable size for reading, and they don’t need to spend a bundle on books, as many libraries now lend e-books. Keeping connected with parents and grandparents may be the biggest gift of all this holiday season, so don’t shy away from the gifts that can make that happen. Seniors may surprise you with their tech savvy.

in Christmas fun, but exercise safety in selecting presents for your pets. Beyond entertainment, pet toys can serve to channel pent-up energy, alleviate temptation to destroy household items, reduce stress, provide environmental enrichment, and help prevent behavioral problems. When selecting the best toy, size is important. If it’s too big, your dog will have trouble holding it in their mouth and paws, but if it’s too small, it becomes a choking hazard! Next, consider the materials and construction of the toy. If your dog is one to cuddle his toys, a stuffed toy may be the perfect complement to their personality. If your dog likes to roughhouse, look for a very durable material that will stand up to their rough-and-tumble ways. All dogs are different. Several different toys will prevent boredom. Playtime with your pets is an important bonding and socialization process for pack animals as there is no substitute for

companionship. With proper playtime, your dog will be better adjusted around other people and animals, and they’ll also develop a deeper bond with you and be happier members of your family. Treats come into playtime also. Safety is your top priority. There are many recalls on commercial treats today, so homemade treats may be your best option. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, your premier, all-inclusive boarding and grooming kennel, doesn’t permit owners to bring commercial treats unless they’re from your veterinarian. UT Veterinary College Offers Pet Memorial Celebration and PAWt-luck Dinner A special day to honor the lives and loss of companion animals In an effort to help pet owners celebrate the lives of their companion animals, both living and dead, Veterinary Social Work (VSW) at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is hosting its winter Pet Memorial Celebration on Friday, December 6, from 6 to 8:30 pm. The event, which is free and open to the

public, allows people to reflect on the impact pets have on their lives. Participants are invited to bring a human-friendly food item to share that reminds them of their animal. Sarina Lyall, VSW social worker, says the opportunity to gather with others who have also experienced the loss of an animal can be therapeutic.

Easy Ways to Improve Your Pet’s Quality of Life Pet ownership is more than just a privilege – it is a responsibility. While pet owners spend ample time and money purchasing elaborate outfits, accessories, and toys for their pets, what truly matters is when owners take the initiative to install healthy habits and routines that enhance their pets' lives. Across America, veterinarians have witnessed a decline in annual vet visits, resulting in increased rates of preventable diseases in both cats and dogs. In fact, about 54% of the nation’s cats and dogs are reported to be obese. As a result, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis are on the rise – diseases that are preventable if identified early on. “Many pet owners are too busy or just skip annual checkups,” says Ron DeHaven, DVM and chairman for Partners for Healthy Pets, a committee of the non-profit American Veterinary Medical Foundation that was created to ensure that pets receive preventive health care. “That’s why we have seen an increase in preventable diseases in cats and dogs. What we need to be sure pet owners realize is that annual veterinary checkups are as important as food and love to a pet’s health and well-being.” By committing your pet to a healthy routine, you can do your part to ensure they live the happiest, longest life possible. If you want the best for your pet, forget the chevron-striped collar this year, and instead focus on these simple tips:

Exercise Regularly

It seems like a simple thing to remember. However, busy schedules and daily stresses often cause people to either forget to exercise their pet or move it to the bottom of the to-do list. Commit yourself and your pet to a consistent exercise routine. Only have 10 minutes to take Spot to the park? That’s OK, too. Small intervals of exercise each day can make a world of difference long-term.

Offer Love and Affection

Anyone who has loved a pet can testify to the relationship’s emotional benefits. The warm welcome you receive at the front door after a long day at work or the wagging tail you hear as you prepare your pet’s dinner are only some of the rewards of being a dog owner. Remember to return the favor. Caring for your pet with enduring love and affection will bring you happiness daily.

Schedule Annual Checkups

No one knows your pet as well as you do, but veterinarians are trained to detect diseases before they become costly issues for both you and your pet. Make it a habit to schedule an annual checkup for your pet every year, using your pet’s birthday or adoption date as a reminder. There is no better gift you can give to your pet than a long, healthy life, and annual checkups are an easy way to ensure your pet is receiving preventive care on a regular basis.

Provide a Proper Diet

You love your pet and your pet loves treats, but feeding your pet an excessive amount of food and spoiling them with treats can lead to rapid weight gain. If you’re not sure how much you should be feeding your pet, consult your veterinarian. Simple dietary swap-outs can help your pet maintain a healthy weight and decrease the chances of developing health complications. December 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Why Older Adults Must Understand Their Flu Vaccine Options and Get Vaccinated With the 2013-2014 flu season officially here, it’s important to consider the single best way to prevent influenza (commonly known as “the flu”) – the flu vaccine. What many older adults don’t know is that the immune system weakens with age, meaning older adults are at a higher risk for flu and related complications. More than 200,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized each year from flu-related illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Adults aged 65 and older typically account for more than half (60%) of these hospitalizations and almost all (90%) flu-related deaths, the CDC reports. To help spread the word about this serious public health issue, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) has launched the second year of Flu + You, an educational program that 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

encourages older adults and their caregivers to learn about the seriousness of the flu, the importance of annual vaccination, and vaccine options for adults 65 and older. Actor Lee Majors, best known for his iconic television role as The Six Million Dollar Man, is joining the campaign this year as a national spokesperson. “According to the CDC, the leading reason older adults do not get the flu vaccine is because they are unaware they need it,” says Lee. “I get the flu shot every year and encourage my peers to do the same. It’s a simple step you can take to help protect yourself from the flu.” The flu can make existing health conditions worse, and it is especially dangerous for people with lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer, conditions that commonly affect older adults. Nationwide, 86% of adults 65 years of age and older have at least one chronic health condition, and approximately 66% of Medicare beneficiaries have two or more chronic conditions, according to the CDC. These conditions put them at increased risk of the flu and flu-related complications, which include hospitalization and even death. “The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine as the single best way to protect yourself from the flu, yet a third of people

65 and older still don’t get vaccinated,” says Dr. Richard Birkel, NCOA Senior Vice President for Healthy Aging and Director of NCOA’s Self-Management Alliance. “As NCOA continues to educate older adults about the flu and the potential severity of the illness, we hope to encourage more people to help protect themselves and their loved ones by getting an annual flu shot.” There are now many types of flu vaccines, with several specifically indicated for certain age groups or immunization needs, including a higher dose flu vaccine, for adults 65 and older, that is designed specifically to address the age-related decline of the immune system. By improving the production of antibodies in older patients, the higher dose vaccine can provide a stronger immune response to the flu than traditional vaccines. Whichever vaccine option is selected, an annual flu shot is a Medicare Part B benefit. This means that the vaccine is covered with no copay for Medicare beneficiaries 65 and older. Older adults and their caregivers can learn more about vaccine options and the importance of getting an annual flu vaccine on the Flu + You website, www.ncoa.org/flu, which features free educational materials, a public service announcement with Lee Majors, and more facts about the flu. Flu + You is a national public education initiative from the National Council on Aging with support from Sanofi Pasteur.

End-of-Year Money Moves Presented by Ali Swofford

Things to consider before saying goodbye to 2013 What has changed for you in 2013?

New job? Started a family? Retired? If changes occurred in your life, then you’ll want to review your finances before year end. There’s still time to see where you can save some taxes and/or build a little more wealth.

Considered tax loss harvesting? That’s taking capital losses (selling securities worth less than what you paid for them) to offset your shortterm capital gains. If you are in the upper tax brackets, you might want to consider this move to lower your taxable income. Consult a financial professional you trust.1 Can you increase your 401(k) or 403(b) contributions? If you can do this in December,

it will lower your 2013 taxable income. You might be able to qualify for other tax credits or breaks available to those under certain income limits.

Thinking of gifting? In many cases, contributions made to charities or non-profit organizations are partly tax-deductible. You can also reduce the value of your taxable estate by gifting. This year’s gift tax exclusion is $14,000. You can gift up to $14,000 to as many people as you wish, understanding you have a $5.25 million lifetime limit before you are hit with gift taxes.2 Should you convert all or part of a traditional IRA into a Roth IRA? Future withdrawals from traditional IRAs will equal future taxable income. Withdrawals from your Roth IRA are never taxed during your lifetime, assuming you follow the rules. Translation: tax savings tomorrow. Before you convert to a Roth, make sure you have the money to pay taxes on the conversion amount. If you convert and change your mind, the IRS gives you until October 15 of the year after a conversion to undo it.3

Before they sing “Auld Lang Syne,”

talk with a financial or tax professional now rather than in 2014. Little year-end moves might help you improve your short-term and long-term financial situation.

uring this very spe-

cial time of the year, I often reflect on the many blessings that I’ve experienced in my life, my children, my parents, my many friends, and my career that has allowed me to help restore the gift of hearing to so many. As a hearing impaired individual from my youth, I myself have experienced and then re-experienced the marvelous gift of hearing. The sound of my children’s laughter, the crack of a baseball bat, the oohs and aahs of 4th of July fireworks, and intimate conversaJoe Simpson tions with friends. I and my associates have invested many years of our lives in enhancing the skills needed to restore natural hearing to those

who no longer enjoy the many sounds that most of us take for granted. As much as we know that we have been able to enrich the lives of hundreds of clients, we continue to be rewarded daily by our patients who share story after story of how their lives have been changed when their ability to hear was improved. We’ve heard about the joy of listening to children playing and the sounds of nature, such as birds singing or water flowing over rapids. We’ve heard about the ability to converse normally with a spouse, loved ones, or friends. They describe how they were once again enjoying their lives to the fullest. Having worn hearing aids for more than three decades, and having been a hearing specialist for 15 years, I credit the technological advances that have occurred and continue to occur for the great strides that we have experienced in the hearing industry. Audibel, a world leader in hearing aid technology, has been at the forefront of the cutting edge advances that has been responsible for helping countless thousands to once again experience and enjoy a normal life. Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain Who doesn't love the smell of a warm kitchen during the holidays? They're designed around food and bringing family, old friends, and new friends together. However, holidays can also be a detriment to your healthy lifestyle and cause you to lose your focus through the end of the year. But they don't have to. Think of fall as the perfect time to reassess the state of your health and prep for the challenges of the holiday season. When it comes to nutrition and avoiding weight gain, keep it simple and easy. Here are some tips to help you do the same.

Bulk up your plate with protein and vegetables The side dishes at most holiday meals are often as good as the turkey or ham, but stuffing and mashed potatoes aren't the best way to fill your plate. One way to avoid weight gain is to build your plate with protein. This should be easy since holiday dinners revolve around meat. Second, fill your plate with side dishes that include vegetables. You may have a little spot left on your plate – use this space for your "indulgence." When you look at your plate, the goal is that the majority is still providing you with good nutrients and reduced carbohydrates.

24

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

Use the "fork" trick

Many of us go back for seconds and even third helpings at holiday meals. This year, focus on asking yourself if you're enjoying your food. To help you answer this question, use the fork trick. Once you take a bite of food, place your fork down on the plate and let it go. Chew your food, swallow, and then pick it up again. The key to this trick is letting go of the fork. This will remind you to slow down, enjoy your food, and converse with friends and family.

Avoid the clean plate club

Growing up, many of us were always told "You can't leave the table until you finish everything on your plate," and, inevitably, we spent many nights sitting alone at the dinner table. But now it’s acceptable to eat until full, and, if your plate is not clean, it's OK. Focus on one plate of food, slow down, and be careful not to overeat. Overfeeding is never really a healthy thing to do.

Share your dessert with a loved one

After a satisfying meal, it’s hard to avoid the sweet smells of pumpkin or warm apple pie. If you choose not to skip dessert, share a small slice with a loved one or new friend. If you’re hosting, designate one family member to bring dessert to limit the endless selection of pies and reduce the urge to over indulge.

Get moving and step outside

Start your holiday with a new tradition this year, and gather the family to do something active. Take a walk to a local park, put together a family friendly flag football game, rake up the leaves in the yard (and jump into them), or encourage the family to sign up for a run/walk event. Holidays are a time to be thankful for family, friends, and everything in between. Savor the moment, really take time to taste your food, get out and have some fun, and avoid the holiday weight gain.

Top Trends for a Wardrobe Update Fashion magazines can easily top 500

pages of skirts, tops, pants, coats, and accessories – all deemed "must-haves" for the chilly weather ahead. The choices and trends can be staggering, but just because temperatures are falling doesn't mean you need to drop a small fortune on a new wardrobe. Fashion experts from two of the Art Institutes schools share six of the top fashion trends and how you can use them to make the most of the pieces already in your closet.

Animal Print

Look at any magazine and you’re going to see animal print. Everything is in animal print. Whether black and white or a crazy color, this trend can be found on garments, shoes, bags, and scarves. Adding an animal print piece to any outfit in your closet will make you look “of the moment.”

with a punch of the season’s soft orange, citrus green, bright royal blue, gold, or royal purple. You can put anything black and white over a white shirt to look crisp and professional. You can also do the same with a black t-shirt, or add a punch of black and white with a handbag.

Dresses

Dresses made a major comeback. Every designer had a number of dresses in their collection. Dresses are easy, convenient, and versatile. They take you from day to evening. Wear a favorite dress with a motorcycle

jacket and boots for day and chandelier earrings and heels for evening. If you have an old dress with a great pattern or color, just add a motorcycle jacket to give it new life.

Hats and Scarves

Hats are also making a comeback. They are an easy and practical update to any outfit, with a variety to suit all face shapes. Scarves are another trend in this season’s accessories. For daytime, wear a long woven scarf wrapped around multiple times, and for evening, add a beaded scarf to a black dress.

Tweed

Tweeds are a very important fashion story this season. Each year a variety of tweeds grace the runways of Fashion Week, but this year they are stealing the spotlight, especially in black and white versions of houndstooth, Donegal tweed, and herringbone. A tweed jacket is the perfect piece over something old, especially when it’s a colorful tweed over a colorful outfit. Other options include tweed scarves and even handbags.

Give A Little Serendipity! This Holiday Season! Waxing Poetic Spartina 449 Nora Fleming Lilly Pulitzer Thymes Lenny and Eva Elly Preston Diana Warner and much more!

Leather

When isn’t leather right? Whether it’s trim, collar and cuff, or the entire jacket, leather is something every woman should have in her closet this season. You can find this incredibly versatile textile in jeans, blouses, and accents, but the big story for leather is the motorcycle jacket. You can find motorcycle jackets in all price points, made from leather, faux leather, vinyl, or patent leather. Added to your closet, it will make anything look more current.

Black and White

A perennial favorite of chic women the world over, black and white is a big fashion trend, especially when paired with a bright, shocking color. The perfect way to jazz up black and white is

Wreath Making Workshop at Historic Ramsey House

Annual Candlelight Tour at Historic Ramsey House

Historic Ramsey House is taking reservations for our Wreath Making Workshop on Saturday, December 7, at 12:30 pm. Julia has gotten extra help this year so we can expand our class to include pomanders and swags along with our traditional fresh green wreaths. There will be hot mulled cider and holiday treats to welcome you between 12:30 and 1:00, and the class will start promptly at 1:00. As in the past, you will be asked to provide your own garden gloves to protect your hands and your own garden shears. (Household scissors are not usually able to cut the heavy stems.) If you have any favorite evergreens or berries from your yard that you want to add to your arrangement, you are welcome to bring them. All other supplies are included in the $35 charge for the workshop.

and their guests will be enjoying the Annual Candlelight Tour from 6 until 8 pm. This is a great time for our members, their friends, and others to come and share the natural warmth and beauty of the holiday season at our beautiful 18th century home. There will be no admission fee for this event. Donations to support Ramsey House and its educational programming would be greatly appreciated. As you check in to the Visitor’s Center, you will hear holiday music provided by the lovely sounds of children’s voices and violins. Enjoy holiday treats and hot mulled cider or coffee, and take time to visit with friends and other Ramsey House members. As you stroll up to the house along the candlelit path, imagine the carriages and guests arriving in their best attire. Enter the kitchen, and envision the hustle and bustle in the kitchen of many hands preparing food for the big event. Picture the Ramsey family and their friends around a festive table in the Great Hall. All rooms will be aglow with the light of candles and the fragrance of natural greens used in decorations in that period. So come spend a very special evening at Historic Ramsey House. The Giving Season lot has been written about the origins of the tradition of giving gifts for the celebration of Christmas. Many attribute the practice to St. Nicholas in Turkey during the fourth century, who gave gifts to the poor children, and by the end of the 10th century, most countries were participating in the idea of gift giving on this date. Gifts were not quite the same as they are now. They were homemade and usually included food and sweets, which generally meant sweet fruits, such as oranges. Later gifts included items that were hand-crafted and needed, such as sweaters and socks. Believe it or not, we do still carry on those early ideas, perhaps without even knowing why. How many of us can remember getting an

orange in our stocking, and how many of us still include socks and sweaters in our menu of gifts to those we love? Traditions are important. Giving gifts to others on this date or any other is always appreciated. If long lines, traffic snarls, mall traffic and overworked sales clerks don’t quite put you in the “holiday spirit,” or if you are struggling for an idea for the gal in your life this year, Next To New can help. We have beautiful merchandise, including blouses, dresses, designer handbags, boots and shoes, fantastic, one-of-akind jewelry, skirts, slacks, scarves, and more. Sizes include 0 to plus, and yes, we have a large selection of sweaters, too! Gift cards are also available for purchase. If you purchase a $100 gift certificate, you get a free $25 to spend in January. Sorry to report, however,

that you won’t find oranges here… Merry Christmas from Next To New!

McClinton announces with his latest album that he has “Room To Breathe,” he sure ain't kidding. After more than four decades of making music, McClinton is breathing freely with the confidence and energy of an artist who knows that he has mastered his game. Still basking in the glow of a new Grammy Award, he has followed up what The Wall Street Journal declared his “best recording ever” – 2001's “Nothing Personal” – with a set that displays even greater muscle, smarts, charm, and soul. A listen to the 12 tracks on “Room To Breathe” handily backs the contention that even after enjoying the best year of his long career, McClinton is now poised to triumph further. time of the year can become complicated with the stress and hassle of shopping for all the people on your holiday gift list, particularly those individuals who already seem to have everything. Well, here’s a suggestion. How about a gift with a very special and unique message that you won’t find at the big box stores? With Americans demonstrating a sincere desire to not only conserve energy, but also protect the environment today and for generations to come, why not give those hard-to-shop-for people on your holiday shopping list the gift of green? Crown Cleaners is proud to offer both its customers and those on their holiday shopping lists with special gift cards that underscore your commitment to our environment while encouraging others to do the same. As a result of a major new investment we’ve made here at Crown Cleaners’ state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly drycleaning technology, Crown Cleaners now offers East Tennesseans a real choice in drycleaning services. With an ever-growing number of drycleaning customers making “green” choices today, Crown Cleaners is proud to be partnering with others throughout the area who share our interest in protecting our environment for our children and for generations to come. This is also the time of the year when many of us are contemplating resolutions for the New Year. How about a New Year’s resolution to make a commitment to support others in their efforts to help protect and ensure a safe environment for your kids and theirs? A resolution that goes far beyond the ones that benefit just ourselves – one that benefits our entire community, our nation, and our world. All of us at Crown Cleaners would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a joyous Christmas and extend to you our best wishes for a prosperous New Year. Creating a Second Paycheck in Retirement is Easier Than You Might Imagine As I talk with clients who are approaching retirement or already retired, their number one fear is running out of money. And given the uncertainties of today’s stock market and rising health costs, it’s understandable. While Social Security provides retirement income, we’re seeing a decline in the number of companies offering a second pension paycheck. It’s become our own responsibility to fill the gap between Social Security and the monthly amount of income we need. A traditional school of thought is that we withdraw a “safe” 4% of our investment assets each year that will sustain us for our lifetimes. But that strategy is not fail-safe if the market drops, as there may not be enough time to recover before you need the money. The good news is that insurance companies have been listening, and they’ve introduced products that provide guaranteed lifetime income. Think of it as a do-it-yourself pension. By reallocating a portion of your IRA or 401(k) into a fixed index annuity with a lifetime income option, you Yvonne Marsh are creating a tax-deferred, principal protected investment that will provide a second paycheck you cannot outlive. Conversely, if you pass away prematurely, your remaining investment (plus interest, less fees) passes to your heirs. Expect to pay between a 0.75% and 0.95% fee for this income guarantee. While there are many annuities available today, you’ll need the advice of a professional advisor to find the right one. Some insurance companies will double your income if you need long-term care – and there is no medical underwriting. This is a great option for someone with pre-existing health conditions. If you’d like to learn how to create a second paycheck, give me a call to schedule a complimentary meeting. I specialize in helping people build the certainty into their retirement years that they deserve.

December in the Garden December is a hectic

time of year. For those days when you simply cannot deal with the holiday chaos any longer, here’s a rundown of reasons to get you out of the house: ›› You can plant trees and shrubs as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Newly planted trees and shrubs will continue to need water in order to survive the winter. Established deciduous shrubs will probably not need water unless the ground becomes really dry, but evergreens continue to lose water through transpiration. If we go longer than a couple of weeks without significant rainfall, drag out the hose. ›› If your yard is dull and colorless, you can plant pansies. They won’t be as full as if you had planted them earlier, but they’ll be great in the spring. You can also set a few pots on your porch for a cheerful look on gloomy winter days. ›› Clean up beds. This is especially important if you had insect and disease problems.

›› Heavy layers of leaves need to be removed from beds and lawns to prevent suffocation. Light layers can be run over by the lawn mower and left to decompose. ›› Empty your pots and containers into garden beds or compost piles if you’re not using them for fall/winter color. Terra cotta and cheaper ceramics need to be stored in a protected location. Sturdier pots can be kept out and turned into winter decorations. Plant them with hardy plants, or fill them with greenery. ›› Keep bird feeders clean and full, and keep baths rinsed. Metal and plastic baths can stay outside, but ceramic and clay need to be drained and stored to prevent cracking. Since many of you will be decorating your homes, let’s go over some options you might not have considered for your holiday decor: ›› Walk outside and see what you have available for holiday decorations before you start spending money unnecessarily.

Magnolias, hollies, hemlocks, boxwoods, pines, and other plants are great for fresh greenery. Cut branches, and immediately place in water. Woody stems should be crushed on the ends to let in more water. They’ll last longer if you soak them overnight. ›› If you’re lucky, you have camellias that are blooming now. If not, the flowers from hydrangeas are another great natural decoration. They even hold up well to spray-painting. ›› Don’t forget the nuts, seeds, and berries! Nandina berries, pinecones, rose hips, acorns, magnolia seed pods, and a host of other things can be used for accent. Beauty berry can also provide unusual color to your decorations. ›› If you buy a freshly cut Christmas tree, buy from someone you trust. Many trees in box stores and tree lots are cut in late October or early November and will struggle to last through the holidays. Ours are cut on November 25th in West Jefferson, NC, by Hudler Tree Farms. Dale Hudler is a great guy and does a wonderful job with his trees. ›› Poinsettias are another plant that should be bought from someone reputable, because they’re very easy to kill. If you buy one from the box stores, it’s probably half dead when you get it. We grow these temperamental beauties at our farm in Fentress County, and they receive wonderful care. (We have provided the poinsettias for the Fantasy of Trees for several years, so you know we do a great job.) The number one thing you need to remember is it WILL NOT SURVIVE cold weather. Anything below 50 degrees will injure it, even if the exposure time is short. It doesn’t even like to be near windows or doors where drafts will hit it. It’s also fragile and shouldn’t be placed anywhere it can be bumped, brushed against, or kicked. Poinsettias should always be placed in a sleeve for transportation, but the sleeve should be removed as soon as you get it home. Water when the top inch is dry, and don’t let it stand in water. It may be grown as a houseplant, but I don’t suggest trying to make it bloom again next year. The process is tedious, and the blossoms won’t be nearly as pretty as they were when you bought it. ›› Keep us in mind as a source for gifts during the holidays. We have tools and gloves for the gardener, birding supplies for the bird enthusiast, and beautiful gifts for everyone else. We also have gift certificates in any amount. If you have any questions, give us a call or email hello@meadowviewgreenhouse.com. From all of us at Meadow View, we wish you a very happy holiday season!

A Nice Bedroom Can Still Have Bedbugs! Have you woken up feeling itchy and notic-

ing some red bumps on your skin? You might have bedbugs and not even know it! A bedbug is a reddish brown insect that is about the size of an apple seed. It feeds on the blood of humans during the night, and its favorite places to hide are near the bed and in or on the mattresses, boxsprings, and bed frames. So while you’re sleeping peacefully, bedbugs may be having an evening snack… YOU!!!

A common misperception is that if you have bedbugs, it means you are not sanitary. That assumption is false, for bedbugs can exist in the cleanest of conditions. They are simply nuisance insects that breed rapidly and can be easily picked up from used furniture and via clothing or suitcases when people travel. The good news is that in most cases, bedbug bites can go untreated since the bumps will eventually go away. The bad news is that you will get bitten repeatedly if the infestation is not controlled, and some people even have allergic reactions. Dayton’s Pest Control is certified as a Bedbug FREE company from Bedbug Central in New Jersey. The significance of this designation is that Dayton’s is part of an expanding national network of pest management firms committed to the guidelines and practices of Bedbug Central, the experts on bedbug control. Plus Dayton’s professional staff members have completed rigorous training for successful bedbug management. Minimal preparation is needed before treatment, and nothing is thrown away or disturbed. New bedbug customers will receive $25 OFF their first treatment. Other services Dayton’s provides include CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, fungicide/moldicide treatments, radon testing and mitigation, pest control for ladybugs/ termites/ants/carpenter bees/kudzu bugs, and VA/FHA termite inspections. Is Your Home Ready for the Holidays? Spending time with loved ones is my favorite part of the Christmas holidays. Almost everything I accomplish from the beginning of December right up to Christmas morning is about creating lasting memories for my kids. Some family traditions include reading the Christmas Story, baking cookies with the kids, attending pageants, and cooking a feast (with my mom and sister-inlaw) for Christmas Day. If you are anything like me, topping your list this season is getting your home ready for company. Decorating for the holidays can be fun, but for many of us, we need to concentrate on sprucing it up a bit first. Decorating on a clean foundation is much more rewarding than covering up problems. You may want to deep clean all your hard surfaces. This includes countertops, tile

tile & grout

and grout in the kitchen and bathrooms, and possibly sidewalks and outdoor living areas. If carpets haven’t been cleaned in a while, you may need a restoration cleaning instead of the traditional surface steam cleaning. A truly deep down clean home inspires positive interaction and just makes you feel good. Add some beautiful holiday décor, and it’s sure to be a place that fosters harmony and joy. If you need any help getting your home’s ambience to a quality you can be

proud of, we’d love to help. We at Surface Doc would like to wish you and your family a Christmas season filled with hope and joy from our Savior Jesus Christ. We’d like to take this moment to thank our customers for accepting us into Co-owner your homes and, in John some cases, sharing Fitzwilliam your lives with us. Please help us spread the beauty of Christmas by recognizing the real reason for the season. Let’s all count our blessings, and live each moment to the fullest. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your friends at Surface Doc.

Top Home Design Trends Enhance Your Holiday Décor rom decking the halls to

trimming the tree, everyone loves the tradition of decorating their home for the holiday season. It's a time to pull out heirloom pieces and blend them with modern elements to make your home truly one of a kind. This year, refresh your holiday motif with a few top décor trends for a look guaranteed to impress.

Personalization

Personalizing your holiday designs can help make your home décor special. Unique touches enhance your enjoyment of the holidays and can serve as conversation starters when guests visit. The easiest way to add a personal touch to your holiday décor is through customized items, like monogrammed pillows and towels, personalized wall hangings that feature a special message, and ornaments and figurines that highlight the family name.

Relaxed Rustic

Taking cues from classic holiday stories set in the countryside, beautiful rustic décor sets the tone for a festive season whether you live in the city, a suburb, or rural area. Rustic elements can be easy to incorporate into your home’s holiday look. Start with a centerpiece that features live greenery, such as a burlap rosemary tree or incense cedar candle ring. A quilted table runner and stockings in appliquéd felt complete the rustic design.

Bold Patterns

The holiday season is full of colors and designs that delight the senses, and bold patterns have never been more popular. Polka dots and chevrons are trending for the year and bring personality to any home’s holiday celebrations. Welcome guests in style with a chevron monogram doormat. Try your hand at homemade polka dot and chevron ornaments. Make your time baking even more special by treating yourself to a whimsical polka dot sugar cookie apron.

Mason Jars

One of the most affordable and accessible holiday trends of the season is mason jars. You can find these at your local craft store, grocery store, or even at second-hand stores. Try using jars as candle sleeves, and place tea lights within for a warm holiday centerpiece. Fill with various shades of holiday candy for colorful décor throughout the house. Complete your punch or eggnog drink station with mason drinking jars for a fun alternative to traditional glasses.

Succulents

The thick and fleshy skin of succulent plants like aloe, jade plant, and echeveria varieties make them great indoor ornamental plants. During the holidays, succulents can be a beautiful alternative or complement to traditional evergreens. Even the whitest of winters can benefit from a dash of greenery, so add succulents throughout your holiday home. A living succulent candle ring or living succulent wreath are stunning additions to any holiday décor and will last well into the following year if cared for correctly. Feeling as jolly as Santa and his elves starts with creating a festive environment in your home. These top trends for seasonal décor will ensure you and your guests have a very merry holiday and start the New Year in style.

Stop!!! Would you wash your family’s clothes in dirty water? Water is a universal solvent, but with all of the chlorine, contaminants, minerals, and metals in your water, you’re forced to use more and stronger cleaning agents to try and overcome the negative impact all of these impurities have on anything you’re trying to wash.

only use softened, reverse-osmosis treated water to clean your family’s fine Oriental rugs, using fewer cleaning agents that could prove to be harmful to the fibers unless thoroughly rinsed with PURE water. We use only wool-safe approved products that protect your fine Oriental and area rugs. Rugs and carpet act as a sink, trapping dust, soil, debris, and contaminates within the pile, where they remain until they are vacuumed by the homeowner or washed by an Oriental rug washing service. Dirt is abrasive, cutting and damaging your fine rug’s fibers. Rugs can show premature soiling, aging, and wear if not professionally removed on a regular basis. Your Oriental rugs should be vacuumed at least once per week and cleaned once a year or as a situation warrants by experienced rug washing professionals who only use pure water that is free from chlorine, metals, and other harmful contaminants. Also, by using only wool-safe approved products for your natural fibers, you can be assured that your investment in Oriental and fine rugs will be protected by washing them in Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning’s specialized rug washing facility utilizing our proprietary processes. Insist on only PURE water free of chlorine and other contaminants when washing your family’s fine Oriental rugs, and protect future family heirlooms. Will You Be Able to Fully Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces Next Spring? If your home isn’t equipped with retractable screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. So if you’re uncertain what to buy your family for Christmas this year, how about retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee and a season of memorable out of door experiences with family and friends next year? What Mrs.Claus Wants for Christmas Wish List Hot Water Showers! myplumbertn.com

Things are Really Heating Up at the North Pole

After years of encouraging Santa to install a tankless water heater, Mrs. Claus finally got her Christmas wish – endless hot showers with absolutely no chance of running out of hot water on those cold North Pole mornings.

The solution was simpler than even Santa

had imagined. All it took was one call to My Plumber. Master plumber, Jamie Foster, and Mrs. Claus got her wish, and Mr. Claus could check off one more item on his Christmas gift list. Just like the North Pole, East Tennessee can also experience cold winter mornings, like two November mornings, where temperatures dropped to the low 20s. So just what was Jamie Foster, Santa’s solution to Owner Mrs. Claus’ problem? Santa had My Plumber install a new, state-ofthe-art tankless water heater at the North Pole. Jamie Foster and his team removed Santa’s oldstyle tank water heater, which not only heated a very limited amount of water, but was also very energy inefficient. This old technology was replaced with a new, state-of-the-art tankless water heater that only heats the actual quantity of water consumed and provides a limitless supply of hot water for those often long, hot morning showers that Mrs. Claus enjoys. If you’d like to heat things up in your home this holiday season, why not give that special someone on your holiday shopping list a gift that they will enjoy and remember all year round? The next step is easy. Just call master plumber, Jamie Foster, at My Plumber, and become the Santa at your home this holiday season with the gift of unlimited hot water as well as lower energy bills.

Fun Ways to Add a

Splash of Color This Holiday Season

The holidays are that special time of year when we reunite with our family and friends; in some cases, we may not have seen these loved ones since the previous holiday. If you're in charge of hosting this year's event, you may think you don't have the time and the money to give your home a new look. You do. Not all home improvement projects

have to involve costly renovations or remodeling – sometimes a fresh coat of paint can give your home the rejuvenated feeling you’re looking for. Here are three unique painting projects you can tackle that will astound your guests and keep them talking all year long:

Instead, think of the ceiling as your room’s fifth wall, and use it to showcase your own sense of style and creativity. Choose a paint that is spatter and drip resistant and is specifically designed for ceilings. Set the mood with a cool color like a sky blue or create a vibrant mood with a bolder color. Preparing your home for the holidays can be a lot of work, but remember, these projects can also be fun and provide a great way for you to showcase your creativity for family and friends. It all starts with an idea and a little dash of color.

» Add a pop of color with an accent wall.

It’s easy to understand why so many people use accent walls in their family rooms. This simple painting project provides a bold statement to the space. If your family room already has an accent wall, you can create an exciting new look by adding a fresh coat of paint and horizontal lines. Challenge the norm that accent walls have to be one bold, flat color and add some fun contrast. You will also find that the horizontal lines make the room look and feel wider.

» Breathe new life into that old piece of furniture.

If you’re hosting a holiday dinner this year, chances are every seat in your house is going to be needed – even that old chair you’d rather forget you have. Well, worry no longer. This year turn that old chair into a focal point with a fresh coat of paint. You can give it that color you’ve always wanted, display it prominently and proudly, and it’s sure to be a conversation starter when your guests arrive. Repainting a piece of furniture can also be a fun project to do with your kids while they are home for the holiday break.

» Don’t forget the ceiling. When people think about painting a room in their home, many of them forget the ceiling.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year From the Maxwells and Your Friends at Encore Interiors Encore Interiors is a family owned consignment gallery in Knoxville that features a unique blend of quality furniture and accessories. We offer many styles displayed in a bright, tastefully designed showroom with fabulous new items arriving daily. makes gathering with family and friends extra special. But between the cooking, decorating, and shopping, preparing for the holidays with that never-ending to-do list can be overwhelming. To reduce stress and stay organized, make a list of all the tasks you need to complete around the house, and apply a deadline for each project. This will help you prioritize and stay on schedule, eliminating any last-minute scrambles. Of course, there are standard household chores like vacuuming, window wiping, and counter cleaning, but don’t forget to consider these other holiday prep projects that may not be on your list.

1. Clean the oven

Put Ironic On & Under Your Tree

The oven is the heart of any kitchen, so it’s especially important to clean it to prevent excess smoke and other kitchen hazards. But don’t create additional problems by using a cleaner with smelly fumes.

2. Clear the fridge Create space in your

fridge, and throw out any expired products, making room for your holiday menu items and any unexpected dishes that guests may bring. While you’re at it, make sure you clear plenty of counter space for your holiday menu items.

3. Freshen the carpet Regular vacuum-

ing will help eliminate surface dirt and pet hair, but it won’t eliminate set-in stains and ground-in grime. Depending on budget and time, you can either rent a carpet deep cleaner or hire a professional to clean the carpeted rooms of your home prior to hosting your big holiday event. In a time crunch? Focus on the high-traffic areas of your home like the living, family, and dining rooms.

4. Empty a closet No one wants to wear a

wrinkled coat home from a party. Instead of tossing guests’ coats in a bedroom, maintain your privacy and clear out a closet near an entry where guests can hang their coats while visiting.

5. Create more space

Give guests the freedom to unwind and relax at your holiday gathering by offering them enough space to do so. Store extra throw pillows, blankets, and toys in bins or chests to create more seating space for guests.

6. Deodorize your home

What’s a surefire way to put a damper on your holiday gathering? Have guests enter a space plagued by unpleasant odors. Keep deodorizing sprays, candles, or oils on hand to add a favorite scent to a room or to eliminate any undesirable odors left behind from an unfortunate cooking incident. For an inexpensive alternative, boil an orange peel, which releases its natural oils into the air for a pleasant citrus scent.

7. Stock extra toiletries For overnight

guests, provide extra toiletries they may have forgotten like travel-size shampoo, soap, lotion, shaving cream, toothpaste, a toothbrush, and cotton swabs. With these tips, some time, and a bit of advanced planning, your home will be holiday-ready, leaving you stress-free to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with those you love.

Oak Ridge Playhouse Welcomes Back

“Annie” “Little Orphan Annie” may have disappeared from the comic pages of American newspapers, much like newspapers themselves, but her spirited message of hope lives on thanks to Broadway and the beloved musical that bears her name. To kick off the holiday season, she returns to Oak Ridge Playhouse once again. oasting one of Broadway’s

most memorable scores, including “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and the ever optimistic “Tomorrow,” the original Broadway production of Annie opened in 1977, winning Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Now produced all around the world, it is ranked among the top 20 longest running shows in Broadway history and continues to be one of the most successful musicals ever.

As familiar as most of us are with the spunky orphan determined to find her parents, there is always another generation that is new to the story of the adorable red-headed Annie who was left as a baby on the steps of the New York City Municipal Orphanage. After years of toiling under the iron fist of the embittered Miss Hannigan, Annie escapes and ends up a guest at the home of the world’s wealthiest man, Oliver Warbucks. But even living in the lap of luxury doesn’t deter Annie from her goal of knowing who her real parents are. “It’s interesting how relevant the show is today,” says Managing Director Reggie Law, who is directing “Annie” for the fourth time in his career (his third at the Playhouse.) “It takes place during the Great Depression when there was so much economic suffering and dissatisfaction with the government. Who among us has not held onto a dream of the sun coming out tomorrow?” Presented by URS/CH2M Oak Ridge LLC, the Playhouse offers up a sparkling and attractive production featuring a cast led by Rylee Griffis as Annie and Dan Maxwell as Daddy

Warbucks. Jessica Magers-Rankin appears as the dreadful Miss Hannigan and Laura Schoonmaker as Warbucks’ private secretary, Grace Farrell, with Boyce Templin and Amanda Lebiszczak as sinister Rooster Hannigan and his girlfriend, Lily St. Regis. Featured as Annie’s orphan pals are Eliza Kate Bonneville, Mariana Kate Harrison, Celeste Paultre, Maggie Keener, Tori Beth Sullivan, and Emaleigh Marshburn.

Performances are December 1 at 2 pm, December 6 and 7 at 8 pm, and December 8 at 2 pm. Tickets range in price from $16 to $22 depending on performance date. This production is also made possible through support from WUOT 91.9 FM and the Tennessee Arts Commission. For more information, visit www.orplay house.com or call 482.9999.

Town of Farragut Opens New

Synthetic Turf Athletic Field On November 7th, it was official. Farragut Mayor Ralph McGill, along with members of the Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Town of Farragut staff, and various volunteer committee members, cut the ribbon for the first synthetic turf athletic field at a public park in the Knoxville area. During the past almost 34 years, a major focus and strength of the Town of Farragut is the dedication to the development of parks, greenways, and recreational opportunities for its citizens and visitors. The Town’s elected officials and staff are thrilled to offer this valuable facility to the community.

his multi-purpose,

rectangular field is housed in Farragut’s Mayor Bob Leonard Park, a 50-acre premier sports complex located off Watt Road that serves numerous adult and youth athletic clubs. Mayor Bob Leonard Park is a multi-use facility offering a multitude of athletic and recreational opportunities, including nine lighted baseball, softball and rectangular fields, three lighted sand volleyball courts, a lighted paved walk trail, and an ADA accessible playground. The new synthetic turf field was one of the oldest fields at the park in need of extensive repairs due to years of use for soccer, football, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, and more. The original plan developed by Town of Farragut staff was to renovate the field with natural turf and new irrigation; however, the Town was fortunate to receive a State of Tennessee Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant of up to $250,000 to instead renovate the field as a synthetic turf field. This LPRF grant is administered by the Recreation Educational Services Division of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The opening of the synthetic turf field is not only a momentous

56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

occasion for the Town of Farragut and the Knoxville area as a whole, but also for the State of Tennessee, as this is the first synthetic turf field funded by a state grant. “We’re very excited that the public will now have access to the synthetic turf field at our park,” said Farragut Parks and Leisure Services Director Sue Stuhl. “This field is an excellent addition to our recreational facilities, and we’re proud to offer this year-round use facility to the community.” As Sue states, the overarching benefit of a synthetic turf field is it allows for yearround play during all but extreme weather. Natural turf fields must be closed during the winter months for maintenance and repair. Constructed by PLAYRITE – the premier sports and recreation construction company in Tennessee – the synthetic turf field boasts the following impressive statistics: • 27 rolls of turf were used on this field. Each roll measures approximately 15 feet wide by 185 feet in length for a total of 4,845 feet in total length. • The field contains more than 74 million feet of yarn – or blades of grass – which is equal to just over 14 thousand miles. • Approximately 20,000 tires were recycled into crumb-rubber for this field, which is the in-fill material between the blades of synthetic grass.

• This field contains more than 213,500 pounds (106 tons) of rubber and 142,000 pounds (71 tons) of sand. The synthetic turf field joins Farragut’s established family of park facilities, including numerous natural turf athletic fields, seven picnic pavilions, three playgrounds, a splash pad, a fishing pond, and much more at Anchor, Campbell Station, Mayor Bob Leonard, and McFee parks. In an effort to make Farragut more livable and marketable, the Town also continues to add pedestrian linkages throughout the community and currently boasts several miles of trails on the Grigsby Chapel, McFee, Parkside, and Turkey Creek greenways. Farragut’s commitment to providing high quality recreational opportunities also includes adult sand volleyball and softball leagues, a dozen community events each year, and quarterly arts, educational, and fitness programs at the Town Hall. To learn more about what Farragut has to offer, visit www.townoffarragut.org. The Town of Farragut – it’s our history, beauty of both the natural and built, high quality residential choices, multiple activity centers, convenient living, outstanding recreational opportunities, and community spirit that make us distinctive.

Hunting for the

perfect work of art as a holiday gift can be a joyous experience. But, while selecting an original piece of art is a highly personal decision, you also want your money to be well spent. So, where to start? All art galleries are not the same. They are as individual as the people who own and run them. That’s a good thing. You have choices to fit your style, goals, and budget. Here’s what you need to know about the Art Market Gallery. • Each piece of fine art and craft is one-of-a-kind and handmade, from paintings to jewelry, from stained glass to wearable art, from intricate wood-turnings to pottery, unique works in leather, metal, fiber, photography, and much more. Nothing is manufactured. No commercial prints are sold. • Everything on display has been created by professional artists and artisans living and working in East Tennessee. • All works are affordably priced because it is an artists’ cooperative. • At the Art Market Gallery, the focus is on its members benefiting, whether their works cost $3 or $3,000, because a cooperative is a not-for-profit venture. Each artist receives 70% of the sold price of

his or her work; the rest goes toward helping to keep the gallery “alive:” rent, utilities, and improvements as needed. That’s it. Meanwhile, a private gallery by necessity must make a profit to stay in business, and that may be reflected in its retail prices. The bottom line? Purchases at the Art Market are a really good value for both buyer and artist. Our gallery is always staffed by members taking their own time to help patrons with their selections. These juried-in artists have maintained the rich tradition of high quality for which the Art Market has been known since its beginning at Knoxville’s 1982 World’s Fair. You can chat with many of us every month year round during Downtown Knoxville’s lively First Friday Art Walks. Our receptions, with complimentary refreshments and live music, start at 5:30 p.m. So, come downtown for the next opening reception on Friday, Dec. 6. The Art Market is all dressed up for the holiday season, and parking is free on the street and several nearby garages after 6 p.m. Enjoy the featured artists’ month-long exhibit of paintings by Lil Clinard of Loudon and functional pottery by Gray Bearden of Knoxville, browse the ornaments made by members to support the Community School of the Arts, and you may find that perfect gift.

Prepare Your Car for Winter with These Simple Tips etting ready for

winter is no small feat. It takes time and planning to make sure your family and your home are ready to brave the elements. But is your car as ready as you are? If you haven't thought about preparations for your vehicle, these simple tips will help you prepare for the colder months ahead.

» Check your tires

You depend on your tires more during the winter than any other season. So before the roads get slick, check your tires to be sure they aren’t worn and that they are properly inflated. You should be able to find the proper tire pressure on the inside of your driver’s side door. Once you’re sure your tire pressure is appropriate, make a note to check again later in the winter. Cold air will cause the air in your tires to compress and may cause your tires to lose pressure.

58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

» Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash

Putting your car through the car wash during the sloppiest season of the year may seem a strange idea, but a thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements.

» Check fluids

It’s good practice to stay on top of fluids such as oil, windshield washer, or transmission fluid. But in the winter, no fluid is more important than your coolant, because if you’re out of coolant, you’re out of heat. Your owner’s manual will tell you how much coolant you need as well and provide the correct blend. It’s also never a bad idea to keep an additional bottle of coolant in your car for emergencies.

» Test your battery

A lack of coolant will stop your heater from working, and so will a dead battery. Before you head out this winter, be sure your battery is working properly. No one wants to be stranded by the side of the road with a dead battery, and, in the cold winter months, being stranded could be dangerous.

» Check your wipers

You checked the wiper fluid along with your other fluids, but don’t forget the wipers themselves. Replace old wiper blades, and make sure to have a reservoir full of wiper fluid.

» Check your brakes

Your brakes will work harder once the icy conditions of winter set in. Make sure they are up to the task by bringing your vehicle in to your mechanic for a thorough brake inspection.

» Keep a winter emergency kit

Sometimes all the preparation in the world can’t prevent a winter emergency. If you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, a winter survival kit can be very helpful. Include an ice scraper/brush, extra blankets or clothes – including hats and gloves – snacks and bottled water, and a first aid kit. A small shovel can come in handy if you get stuck, and a bag of cat litter can be used to provide needed traction for your tires. Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability, and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes. By planning ahead, you can ensure that your family and your car will be in for a smooth ride all winter long.

Tennessee Overhill:

Home to 50 Waterfalls eople are drawn to the southeast corner of Tennessee from near and far to explore the beautiful natural landscapes of the Tennessee Overhill region, a three county area that includes the southern half of the Cherokee National Forest. One of the major draws to this area is the many waterfalls located throughout the forest. There are more than 50 waterfalls ranging from five feet to 130 feet high. Some are easily accessible, and others, due to their remote locations, require a hike. Choosing which waterfall to see is the greatest challenge. The spectacular 90-foot Bald River Falls (GPS: 35° 19.44’N, 84° 10.357’W) can be seen from the bridge on Forest Service (FS) road #210, a paved road just a few miles from Tellico Plains. Have your camera handy, because a photo from the bridge with the falls behind you will be one of your trip’s favorites. Located in Chilhowee Recreation Area, Benton Falls (GPS: 35° 8.428’N, 84° 35.766’W) is a 65-foot waterfall with water cascading down step-like rocks. The three-mile roundtrip hike is rated easy/moderate. From Ocoee Scenic Byway (Hwy 64), take FS road #77 to Chilhowee Recreation Area ($3.00 day use fee). Trailhead can be found in the parking lot. Forty-five-foot Coker Creek Falls (GPS: 35° 11,835’N, 84° 22.217’W), with a series of waterfalls/cascades ranging from eight feet to 20 feet high, is a kayaker’s and photographer’s favorite. Stop at the Coker Creek Welcome 60

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

Bald River Falls Center/Post Office on Hwy 68 to get directions. The hike is around three miles, but you don’t need to make the entire trip to see a waterfall. Rated easy/moderate. Other lesser known falls are Turtletown Falls (GPS: 35° 9.834’N, 84° 21.166’W) and Falls Branch Falls (GPS: 35° 20.634’N, 84° 17.172’W). Turtletown Falls is 40 feet high and flows over a large ledge, then separates into two falls. A bonus waterfall, Lower Turtletown Falls, may be seen if you hike a little further downstream from the main falls. On Hwy 68, turn at the Farner post office, cross the RR, turn left on Duggan Road, and bear left on Farner Road. The entrance to the falls, FSR #1166, is the first road on the right. Follow the dirt road for 1.5 miles down to the fall’s parking lot. The trail is three miles roundtrip and rated easy/moderate. Falls Branch Falls (GPS: 35° 20.634’N, 84° 17.172’W) is an 80-foot waterfall located off the National Scenic Byway – Cherohala Skyway Hwy 165. At the Rattlesnake Rock Parking Area, hike about 100 feet (take the left fork) to the Falls Branch Trail #87. Once at the falls, follow the creek downstream to see

several cascades. Roundtrip is about three miles. Rated moderate. Bonus: Located in a wilderness area, you can see a very impressive old-growth forest site with huge trees – poplars, buckeyes, birches, hemlocks, and black cherries. Keep in mind that waterfalls are beautiful, but they’re not to be climbed on. They can be dangerous, and in some cases, people have been seriously injured while climbing on waterfalls. Avoid stepping into fast flowing water, but if you must walk into a creek, be aware, as moss covered rocks can be very slippery. Be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. Enjoy the experience while you’re visiting, and take a photo home to remember your trip. The Tennessee Overhill has directions to most waterfalls in the southern Cherokee National Forest. Call 877-5105765 for more information. Coker Creek Welcome Center has maps to Coker Creek Falls and Turtletown Falls. You may also check out the Cherokee National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/ cherokee or the Overhill website at www. tennesseeoverhill.com.

By Katie Stringer, Ph.D., Executive Director, Blount Mansion

History

The Blount Mansion

Looking Back and Moving Forward he Blount Mansion

was one of the first wooden frame houses built west of the Alleghenies. The original structure was built in 1792 by William Blount, first governor of the Southwest Territory and signer of the United States Constitution. The Tennessee Founders wrote our State Constitution here in Governor Blount’s office in 1796. The home played a role in early Statehood, saw the strife and division caused by the Civil War, and had an interesting role as home to several families during Knoxville’s river-town era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1925, the home had deteriorated and was threatened

Working on the basement

with demolition by downtown development. In 1930, a group of dedicated women purchased and saved the Blount Mansion from becoming a parking lot for the Andrew Johnson Hotel. When the property was purchased, the Blount Mansion Association was formed to preserve and interpret the home for generations to come. In the 1960s, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Preservation efforts did not end in the 20th century, however. Because the structure is more than 220 years old, the BMA recently began a large-scale preservation and restoration to preserve the integrity and viability of the historic home for another 200 years. The project, which comes with a Photography provided by Knox Heritage

price tag of around $1.9 million, will ensure that the house and its stories will remain available to the public for years to come. In 2010, the Blount Mansion Association received a Save America’s Treasures grant from the National Parks Service and the United States Department of the Interior. The State of Tennessee also contributed to the project, and capital campaign donors and members have been invaluable to the project. The preservation of the Blount Mansion and the outbuildings includes foundation stabilization of the historic house, storm windows for all buildings, upgraded security and fire suppression, heating and air systems, new roofs on all historic buildings, and more. In addition to the construction, the Blount Mansion will receive both a historic structures report and cultural landscape report, which will help the staff produce an authentic interpretation of the buildings and people who lived on-site. The architect for this project is Joseph K. Oppermann of Joseph K. Oppermann Architect (JKOA) in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Assisting on the project is Henry Lafferty of Lafferty Architecture, PC. The landscape architect for the project is William Shealy of The Jaeger Company based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Johnson and Galyon of Knoxville are the general contractors for construction at the mansion. Mr. Oppermann described the Blount Mansion in his reports as “one of the most important historic buildings in the state as well as the nation.” He also explained that the mansion “played a central role in the early history of the Southwest Territory and formation of the State of Tennessee.” Starting September 9, 2013, the Mansion and grounds closed to tours to safely complete the restoration project. During construction on the Blount Mansion grounds, the Visitors Center remains open from 9:30-5 Tuesday through Saturday. At the Visitors Center, guests can view a special exhibition, Furniture on the Frontier, and learn more about preservation

efforts. Furniture on the Frontier shows what life may have been like for the Blount family in the wilderness Knoxville in the 1790s. The Blount family brought a certain level of prestige with them, which was reflected in their home as well as in their belongings. The artifacts that are on display represent the lifestyle that the Blount family enjoyed. The exhibit is free to the public, with a suggested donation to help with renovation costs. The restoration is scheduled to end early in 2014, and the BMA will have a special event to celebrate the preservation efforts and the future of our site. Please follow us on social media to learn more about the project and our plans for the future. Current updates are available on the Blount Mansion website, www.blountmansion.org, the Blount Mansion facebook fan page, through our twitter account (@BlountMansion), and on our blog at www.blountmansion. blogspot.com.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. The Holiday Tradition Continues with

“A Christmas Carol” Kids Ages 5-12 are $10

The Clarence Brown Theatre holiday tradition of the timeless Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol,” is on the Clarence Brown Theatre mainstage through December 22nd. This year’s production features an enhanced set, more music, and an intermission. Also new this year is a special photo opportunity and sweet treat concessions for young and old alike. Christmas Carol” is the story of Ebenezer

Scrooge, whose ghostly journey and transformation through Christmas past, present, and future is among the most beloved stories in western literature. Described by Dickens as his “little Christmas Book,” “A Christmas Carol” was first published in December 1843. The story was instantly successful, selling more than 6,000 copies in one week. It has since been republished countless times and adapted for stage and screen. It remains one of literature’s most enduring and often-quoted stories of hope, triumph, and communal spirit. “A Christmas Carol” runs through December 22. UT faculty/staff, senior citizens, children, and students receive discounts. A special Gift of Theatre 3-show package is available for sale for $69. With a dual mission to train the next generation of theatre artists and to provide top quality professional theatre, the Clarence Brown Theatre at the University of Tennessee Knoxville is one of only 12 academic LORT (League of Resident Theatre) institutions in the nation. Under the artistic direction of Calvin MacLean, the CBT season runs from August through May and features eight productions ranging from musicals to drama. Carolina Chocolate Drops bid farewell to founding member Dom Flemons, who is starting a solo career after a special December U.S. tour to commemorate his time with the band. Two new musicians, cellist Malcolm Parson and multi-instrumentalist Rowan Corbett, will join the group in the New Year. “Dom and I have been a tremendous team for the last eight years, and I wish him all the best on his new solo endeavor,” said Drops co-founder Rhiannon Giddens. “I know he will be enriching the landscape of American music wherever he goes. Carolina Chocolate Drops lives on and honors all past members who have added so much over the years; we wouldn’t be where we are without each and every one. I’m looking forward to introducing new, talented musicians to the everexpanding Chocolate Drop family!” “Though my music is taking me to new places with my upcoming solo projects, I know that the Carolina Chocolate Drops will continue on to do new, amazing things,” said Dom Flemons. “My past eight years with the band has been a wonderful experience, musically and personally. in a new direction, I know I can count my time with them as a building block to where I am now.” Flemons will kick off 2014 with a tour of Australia and continue performing across the U.S. throughout the year. You can view the full schedule at www. DomFlemons.com. The band’s upcoming December tour dates come on the heels of Rhiannon Giddens’ show-stopping performance at the T Bone Burnett and Joel and Ethan Coen–produced Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis concert this fall at New York’s famed Town Hall. Variety said “the breakout star of the evening’s second half was indisputably Rhiannon Giddens… who held the capacity crowd spellbound,” and The Wall Street Journal added that Giddens “channeled gloriously the spirit of Odetta.” The concert will be broadcast on Showtime beginning December 13. Nonesuch released its second record from the Carolina Chocolate Drops – the Grammy-nominated Leaving Eden – in 2012. The band’s first Nonesuch release, the critically acclaimed Genuine Negro Jig, won a Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy. Business

Self-Employment Success: Not a Game of Chance ’ve been at this for 30

years. Self-employment, that is. I’ve literally observed firsthand thousands of small businesses during three decades, many hundreds of whom failed. Sadly, most of the failures were preventable. I am often asked by eager, firsttime entrepreneurs if I think they’ll be successful. My response is always the same. Your success is entirely up to you. If you view success in business as a game of chance, like a roll of the dice, you’ve likely already failed. Success in small business is a decision. An uncompromised commitment to succeed. A carefully thought out and well implemented strategy that ignores the odds. I know what the odds are against success in the first, fifth, and tenth years in business, but success-oriented

entrepreneurs ignore the odds. Insane? Not really. Keep in mind that there are no statistics for the serious entrepreneur with that fire in their eyes, commitment, and bulldog determination to adhere their strategy for success despite their circumstances. Need an example? How about three? Three first-time business owners that refused to roll the dice but instead took on the challenges of entrepreneurship and won despite being in the middle of the nation’s deepest recession. How about Clinton Glass, who not only thrived throughout the recession, but also totally transitioned their company’s product line? Or there’s Granite Transformations, who, although stumbled slightly out of the starting gate, implemented an entirely new business model that has catapulted them to the number one franchise in the Granite Transformations’ family nationally. Then

there’s Slamdot, launched in a recession, yet thriving, relying on a business model that successfully combines affordable websites, genuine customer relationships, and a remarkable grasp of successoriented marketing principles. Luck? In your dreams. These entrepreneurs faced the very same challenges that confront every other small business owner daily. They just refused to accept an outcome that would be determined solely on the basis of luck or chance. Winners make their own luck!

The Most of Christmas’s Past B U SIN E SS B ASI C S by Beth Townsend We say it annually: “This year, let’s

don’t overdo Christmas.” It’s hard each year not to get carried away with shopping, giving, stressing about lists, recipes, and decorating. As a child, Christmas was magical. We were a big family of five children being raised by a single mom. We struggled, but we made it. Somehow Christmas always seemed to produce a miracle. Each year was better than the last, and we never quite understood how. While the budget numbers didn’t add up, the presents did. We could wrap anything and call it a gift, and we were overjoyed with each one. The old movie “The Ghosts of Christmas’s Past” takes the main character back through painful memories of years gone by. The moral of the story is to make good decisions, take nothing for granted, and remember that you can’t go back and undo what has been done. My memories are different from yours but are just as important. To make the most of Christmas’s past, look back long enough to learn how to make the most of Christmas present.

Looking back • Cherish the good memo-

ries, and forgive the bad ones. We all had

imperfect families, and the way to overcome past obstacles is to recreate new memories. Don’t focus on what you don’t have or what you didn’t do. There’s time for that when you start the New Year and establish goals.

Looking out • What matters to you? Who matters the most to you? Answer by analyzing how you spend your time. Don’t say what’s important; do what’s important. Christmas is a perfect time to carve out special times for special memories. Don’t get so caught up in busyness that you can’t linger in spontaneous moments with others. Sometimes unhurried conversation is precisely what those closest to you would wish for. Looking forward • Overdo Christmas, by all means, but not with lists. Quiet evenings by a fire. Decorating the tree. Silly gift exchanges at work where others can laugh and have a good time deepening relationships. Relax! If you’re too busy to enjoy other people, you’re too busy! What most people desperately want, regardless of age, is a strong sense of significance. To be valued and heard. To be appreciated for

who they are and what they do. To come home to a place where they feel comfortable being themselves. To work in a place where others value their work and contribution. Giving and receiving gifts is exciting. Seeing the faces of children light up on Christmas morning is priceless. Eating too much, well, it’s a great reason to feast. Just don’t overlook meaningful moments that last forever. When is the last time you just had fun? Let go, lighten up, and laugh a little. If your family and co-workers are like mine, there’s plenty of funny to go around. Give more by shopping less. Making the most of Christmas’s past means making the most of what you have today.

Five Tips to Make Your Family Holidays Stress Free The holidays will be here before you know it, and that means family time. Not just any family time, but family time with your in-laws. Regardless of whether you enjoy spending time with your in-laws or not, getting ready to spend the holidays with them can be stressful. Holiday time with your in-laws doesn’t have to get the best of you. Shifting the way you see your situation will make it easier for you to shift the emotional feelings that go along with it. When you can “lighten” how you perceive things, you’ll actually be able to experience family in a different way. These tips can help: 1. Be a team player

If your in-law is coming to your house, make sure you include her in the different things occurring throughout the day. Treat her as you would one of your friends who is attending your holiday gathering. If you’re going

Etiquette

to her house, ask her if she’d like some help. Whether she does or doesn’t, stay around and talk with her; let her know you’re interested in her.

2. Don’t take things personally

Everyone is more stressed during the holidays, including your in-law. As long as you treat her with respect and kindness, then you can be certain her actions are not about you!

3. Find the humor

Determine to find humor in what your inlaw says or does. When you do, you create an emotional distance that helps you take her actions less seriously. By finding the humor, you’ll also have some great stories to tell your friends later.

4. Find some “down time” for yourself Find some quiet time for yourself so you can

re-energize and regain your strength. Even just a few minutes by yourself can be just what you need to get your energy back.

5. Establish ground rules in advance

Before arriving at your in-law’s house, you and your spouse should have already decided how long to stay. Let the family know when you arrive that you’ll need to leave at a particular time, and then leave at that time. If your spouse wants to stay longer, take two cars. It’s Not Our Job Believe it or not, it’s not our job to correct others. Really! For some reason, many of us believe that we have an obligation to set the record straight or correct others when we believe they are mistaken with their information, opinion, or overall approach to things. How many times have we all been guilty of saying something like, “That’s not how you do it,” “Why are you doing it that way” or “Well, that’s not true,” etc.? The truth is, it’s really rude when we correct others unless we are their actual parents. Let me make a few clarifications. Standing up for what we believe is right or stopping a wrong from being committed towards another human being is, of course, expected of us all. This is very different than going around to our family and friends being the “accuracy police” on everything they do, say, and believe. I recently spent time with a few friends, and after some time went by and a few disagreements occurred, I realized that what was causing contention was the need for a couple of friends to point out every time they disagreed with what was being said. There 74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2013

is a time and place for making our opinions known, but during friendly, casual conversation is not one of those times.

Pointing out others’ faults is the quickest way to becoming the person everyone wants to avoid. It’s also not polite to point out everything your spouse does that you don’t like or disagree with. This wears a marriage down and contributes to resentment and bitterness. Yes, there are occasions where it is necessary to express disappointment in certain behavior, but these times should be the exception, not the norm. What if, instead of pointing out all the things that those around you did wrong, you recognized them for the things they did right? (Of course this is only your opinion.)

Usually most people respond better to compliments rather than complaints and negative comments. If you really want to strive to be gentlemen and ladies, then it is important to avoid being someone that others try to avoid. Pointing out others’ faults is the quickest way to becoming the person everyone wants to avoid. Instead, compliment and praise. If you feel you really can’t do this, then choose to not say anything at all. Choosing to speak should be carefully evaluated with thought going into what your purpose is, what you think the outcome will be if you speak, and if it’s worth it. May we all strive to have relationships that bring great joy to us and others.

ULTRASOUND is Heating Things Up

n the medical field,

ultrasound has been used for diagnostic imaging purposes for many years. More recently, ultrasound has been turning up the heat in the field of aesthetic medicine. The power of ultrasound has been harnessed to perform non-invasive cosmetic procedures with some amazing results.

Two companies have brought ultrasound technology to the aesthetic marketplace. These are Solta with Liposonix and Ulthera with Ultherapy. Both Liposonix and Ultherapy use focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Liposonix and Ultherapy work. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of these treatments in Knoxville. Using focused ultrasound to melt fat, Liposonix has been approved to treat the abdomen and flanks (love handles). The Liposonix treatment is ideal for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch or 2.5 cm of fat to lose

in their abdomen or flanks. It is noninvasive, so it is a great solution if you have stubborn fat but don’t want to have surgery. The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and testing behind its development. It has a welldefined safety profile during and after treatment with very good patient satisfaction. With a single treatment we typically see patients lose between one and two inches from their waistline, and maximum improvement is seen after two to three months. Ultherapy is the only device that has received FDA approval for a noninvasive neck and brow lift. We use it to lift and tighten the skin of the face, neck, under the chin, along the jaw line, and on the brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the skin’s surface. Another factor that promotes safety and better results is that with Ultherapy we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months with maximum improvement at six months. While these ultrasound technologies do not duplicate the results of traditional surgery, Liposonix and Ultherapy are inviting alternatives for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery. Please call Southeastern Dermatology Consultants to schedule a complimentary consultation, and see if either of these procedures are a good option for you.
