IS THE SEASON

for all things Christmas like decorations, parties, music, TV specials, and movies. Recently my husband, Tom, asked me what my favorite new and old Christmas movies are. I had to think for a while, especially about a favorite new Photo by D. Roberts Photography holiday movie. The Polar Express is my choice for a favorite new or more current Christmas movie. The graphics, music, and characters are all about the season, and I happen to like trains. But I am partial to old, black and white classic movies, and my favorites are many such as A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, and It’s A Wonderful Life. My top favorite though is The Bishop’s Wife, and in that movie, there is an ice skating scene that reminds me of my days skating in Wisconsin. As a teenager, I’d go ice skating with friends in the evenings at a park near our home. Winters in Wisconsin 4

are quite cold and frigid, so we’d bundle up and head out with our skates to the lake. There was a warming house where we could escape the cold or warm ourselves with a cup of hot chocolate. Many families enjoyed an evening of skating as Christmas music played, and we all enjoyed the season without cell phones or digital distractions. It was a simpler time when families turned off the TV, took time to wish friends and family a Merry Christmas, and make memories that would last a lifetime. Making memories like ice skating with friends and family is what I fondly remember about the season – not the gifts or the fruit cake but the people and the fun we had together. So I hope you make fond memories this Christmas season with your family that will be remembered for years. From all of us at Everything Knoxville, we wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

W

HEN JONATHAN Bradshaw was growing

up in Mississippi, little could he have imagined that so many of his childhood experiences would lead to the entrepreneurial lifestyle that he now pursues. His father’s hardware store was a second home to both Jonathan and his younger sister. They used to head directly to the store immediately after school to either complete their homework assignments or work alongside their father, which was often the case. Jonathan later discovered that working in the family’s second enterprise, a quick oil change business, further helped him to understand the need to work together as a team member and to provide the highest level of customer service possible in order to successfully differentiate their family owned company from the competition. After completing his education in dentistry at Louisiana State University’s School of Dentistry in 2007, Jonathan completed his General Practice Residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 2009 and continued at UT as an instructor in the school’s hospital residency program. Applying many of the same success principles he learned early on from his father, Jonathan launched his successful medical practice, Heritage Family Dentistry, first in Lenoir City and then in Farragut in 2017. The Heritage Family Dentistry team of medical professionals has earned a reputation for excellence by offering their patients the highest level of experienced and compassionate care combined with today’s state-of-the-art technology, honesty, and integrity. Everything Knoxville is excited to present this recent interview with Dr. Jonathan Bradshaw, DDS. EK: I’m sure many of our readers are interested in just what led you to pursue a career in family dentistry.

6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2017

Jonathan: Growing up I was always interested in the medical field but wasn’t sure which area of medicine I wanted to pursue. After shadowing many different types of physicians, dentists, and surgeons, it became apparent that dentistry provided all of the things I was interested in for my career. As a dentist, I am able to build and maintain patient relationships, I utilize daily my clinical and surgical skills as I care for my patients, and there are many opportunities for me to serve those in need within the community and in the mission field. Family dentistry was the perfect fit. EK: How have your personal experiences in your father’s family businesses helped prepare you to launch and operate your medical practice? Jonathan: In dental school, we are not prepared and taught how to be business owners. We are superbly trained to be clinicians, but there are no classes on how to manage associates or provide the highest levels of customer service. Having grown up watching my father run his own small businesses, I saw firsthand the sacrifices, hard work, and dedication it took to own and operate a customer service-oriented business. I witnessed the day-to-day demands and satisfactions of managing employees, caring for clients, and meeting the needs of the public, all of which helped to equip me to build a patient-focused, family dental practice, where the highest levels of service and quality care are our first priorities. EK: How has being a husband and father of four youngsters better prepared you to succeed in the field of family dentistry? Jonathan: My family is a priority to me. It is a value instilled in me by my parents and one that my wife, Casey, and I aspire to every day. We have four children ranging from 4 to 10 years old. Understanding Photos by Ben Finch

the family dynamic helps me to better relate to the various people that come into our practice. Each person in a family is an individual. Just as each relationship within a family requires getting to know that person and his or her needs, we are committed to listening to and understanding each and every patient. There is no successful cookiecutter system for caring for people. At Heritage Family Dentistry, our goal is to build genuine relationships with each patient, addressing their individual needs and desires. EK: Describe briefly the services you offer at Heritage Family Dentistry in Farragut. Jonathan: We offer all aspects of general dentistry, ranging from dental implants and cosmetic dentistry to fillings, crowns, dentures, routine cleanings, and treatment for gum disease. We also provide sedation dentistry for patients who have anxiety regarding dental treatment. As a family practice, we see patients of all ages. EK: Patients that are new to Heritage Family Dentistry frequently offer positive comments on your friendly and attentive team of dental care providers. Just how important is your team to the patient’s experience? Jonathan: I couldn’t do what I do without my team. Each team member exemplifies the values that are important to making this practice successful. Every one of them truly cares about our patients and seeks to make them feel at home while providing the highest quality of personalized care. EK: One area of dentistry that you specialize in is the partial or full replacement of teeth resulting from injury, dental abnormalities, disease, or decay. What options do you offer patients that are experiencing one or more of these challenges? Jonathan: I offer a multitude of services to provide restorations, including partial dentures, crowns, and bridges. However, dental implants are one of the most effective ways to restore a patient’s smile and quality of life. Implants are the closest thing that man has developed that is capable of replacing our God-given natural teeth. EK: Can these alternatives that you’ve outlined be used for aesthetic purposes as well? Jonathan: Absolutely! Dental implants and the other restoration techniques we offer can be used to restore and enhance a patient’s smile. EK: Tell us a little more about dental implants. Why are they regarded as superior to dentures? Jonathan: Dental implantation is a process where teeth are securely fastened in the mouth by anchoring them to the jawbone. Implants are superior because they provide greater stability and comfort in chewing, speaking, and smiling and offer a higher level of

confidence that you most likely will not experience with traditional, removable dentures. EK: How can our readers best determine if they are a candidate for dental implants or the other options you offer? Jonathan: Patients can determine if they are a candidate by scheduling a consultation at our office. During this process, we will evaluate their overall health, perform an exam of their mouth, and evaluate the quality of their jaw bones with our state-of-the-art 3D CT x-ray. EK: Heritage Family Dentistry also offers patients several other exciting opportunities to take full advantage of the full range of services you offer. Tell our readers about your Dentistry Membership Club for those of us who might not have dental insurance and the special financing options available for more patient involved dental procedures. Jonathan: Heritage Family Dentistry offers a loyalty membership program where patients pay for their routine, preventative care via low monthly payments. As a member, they receive a 15% loyalty discount on all procedures. We also offer low-interest and interestfree payment options via Care Credit and Lending Club. EK: How can our readers learn more about Heritage Family Dentistry? Jonathan: Readers can always visit our website at www.hfdsmiles. com. We would also love for them to come by for a tour of our practice and meet our team. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Jonathan: I am truly blessed to be able to care for many wonderful patients, and I look forward to many more years of building relationships within our community.

D o l l ywo o d ’s S m o ky M o u n t a i n Christmas presented by Humana celebrated its 10th consecutive victory in Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards. Once guests experience the park’s festive holiday atmosphere for themselves, they understand why Dollywood has earned the award for the last decade. Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas (now through Jan. 1st) kicks off the holiday season with its signature light displays, family-favorite shows, delectable food, and warm Christmas spirit. The awe-inspiring Parade of Many Colors returns for its second season, while traditional holiday performances – including Christmas in the Smokies and It’s a Wonderful Life – and four million festive lights delight guests during this lively festival. “There is no time of the year that is more special to me than Christmas,” said Dolly Parton. “Some of the best memories of my life are from my time spent with family and friends celebrating Christmas together. It’s when we all come together to enjoy sweet traditions and the warm love of family and to have those special experiences we’ll always remember. “Now when we were growing up, we never could have imagined millions of Christmas lights or even a life-size Rudolph. But I know the families who come to visit my Dollywood this Christmas will leave with wonderful memories they’ll treasure forever – just like me and my family.” Dollywood, which earned its ninth consecutive Golden Ticket Award for Best Shows, continues to provide guests with 10

classic Christmas entertainment that brings the holidays to life! Based on the timeless holiday story of love and generosity, It’s a Wonderful Life follows small town businessman George Bailey as he discovers the true value of life, family, and friends with a little help from his guardian angel, Clarence. One of Dollywood’s greatest entertainment offerings, Christmas in the Smokies, returns to D.P.’s Celebrity Theater and serves as the headline show for the festival. Guests can celebrate the joy of the season while a cast of singers and dancers performs hometown holiday favorites accompanied by a band of live musicians! After a successful debut season in 2016, the crowd-favorite Parade of Many Colors returns to celebrate the fun, faith, family, and harmony of the holiday season. The parade features whimsical floats, interactive characters, and a heart-warming, cheerful message for Dollywood guests to enjoy. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the beloved Christmas television special, again comes to life at Dollywood this season. Guests can meet Rudolph and his friends, including Clarice, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, and Yukon Cornelius in Rudolph’s Holly Jolly ™ Junction, a magical area where festive fun awaits. After meeting Rudolph and his friends, families can head to Clarice’s kitchen to decorate custom Christmas cookies or even take part in a few reindeer games! Dollywood’s entertainment features several other beloved shows this season, including An Appalachian Christmas, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, O’ Holy Night, My People, and Christmas with The Kingdom Heirs. Guests also can experience Santa Land, a

whimsical workshop where the smallest guests can share their wish list with Kris Kringle. Families can finish their visit with a traditional Christmas meal as several of Dollywood’s menus feature holiday-themed items. Among the new offerings this year is the Thanksgiving Feast sandwich – a ciabatta roll filled with cornbread dressing, slices of oven-roasted turkey breast, topped with cranberry sauce and served with sweet potato tater tots. Returning favorites include turkey and dressing, Christmas ham, chicken and dumplings, Cornish hens, center cut pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, hot flavored drinks like wassail, Mayfield hot chocolate and cider, and much more. Holiday desserts available throughout the park include gingerbread man cookies, red velvet and pumpkin spice funnel cakes. Smoky Mountain Christmas guests can upgrade a paid one-day admission ticket to a regular 2018 season pass for as low as $30 (plus tax when buying four or more). Ticket purchasers receive credit for the value of a regular one-day ticket ($69) toward the purchase of a 2018 season pass. A season pass purchased during Smoky Mountain Christmas provides unlimited admission to this year’s Christmas festival along with Dollywood’s entire 2018 season. Additionally, for each child’s season pass purchased, families will receive a copy of Parton’s newest children’s album, “I Believe in You.” (A one-day ticket is valid for upgrade on the day of visit only.) For more information, including operating days and hours, daily show schedule, and more helpful tips to help plan a visit, call 1-800-DOLLYWOOD or visit www. dollywood.com.

N BEHALF of Svetlana, me, and our children, we would like to thank each of you for both your support and encouragement. You have helped us to make our American dream a reality. We are truly grateful not only for the freedoms we enjoy, but also for the opportunity we have to contribute to our nation. I think often of my grandfather, who taught me the wood craftsmanship skills practiced for centuries in Europe that we relied on to launch European Fine Hardwood Floors. I am also grateful to him for instilling in me a strong work and family ethic, honesty, and integrity. At European Fine Hardwood Floors, we have combined the woodworking skills I began learning from my childhood with the latest state-ofthe-art technologies that allow us to offer homeowners a hardwood flooring experience that is totally unique in today’s flooring marketplace. The European Fine Hardwood Floors experience begins with a total commitment to quality. Whether you are installing a new hardwood floor or replacing or refinishing an existing hardwood floor, you will discover not only this commitment, but also a

Joseph Falsetti with his mom, Rosemary Falsetti, and Valera Tomescu dust-free experience. There is also one other way that we are unique in the industry. We are one of the very few hardwood f looring contractors recognized by Bona, the world’s most recognized and respected name in the hardwood finishing industry, as Certified Bona Craftsmen. The Certified Bona Craftsmen designation is much coveted and earned by very few individuals in our industry. Using the patented Bona dust-free system, we are able to safely and efficiently remove all dust commonly associated with hardwood f looring refinishing with our high-volume vacuums placed outside your home and connected to our equipment to remove all the dust that homeowners asso-

ciate with refinishing. All we leave behind are beautiful hardwood floors. Whether you are considering refinishing your home’s hardwood floors or installing new hardwood floors, I would like to personally invite you to discover the European Fine Hardwood Floors difference. Merry Christmas to each of you from European Fine Hardwood Floors and the Tomescu family.

E ALL NEED “SAFE” MONEY in our investment strategy: Money kept in FDIC insured bank accounts for our emergency funds or perhaps parked on the sidelines waiting for a market correction. FDIC insurance gives us peace of mind – insuring up to $250,000 Yvonne Marsh, per depositor at each bank. But CFP®, CPA it’s painful watching your bank savings earn a mere pittance, all while inflation is averaging 2.2% and you’re losing purchasing power. Want a quick solution to increase your bank interest earnings? Enter the CD ladder. A certificate of deposit (CD) is an FDIC-insured bank deposit where the bank guarantees you a rate of return for a given period of time. The longer the period of time, the higher the interest rate. Of course the challenge in this low rate environment is who wants to lock in an interest rate for a long period of time when interest rates could/should rise? With a CD ladder, instead of investing $50,000 in one CD at a lockedin rate for 2 years, you invest $12,500 in 4 CDs, maturing in 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 2 years. Then every 6 months you have 1/4 of your portfolio coming due to reinvest in the prevailing interest rate environment, so you can ride the wave as interest rates rise. Using today’s interest rates, a 2 year CD ladder can earn roughly 3 times more interest than a money market account earning 0.5% in that same time period. A 3 year, 4 year, or 5 year ladder earns even more. Let us help you construct your CD ladder. We can shop hundreds of FDIC-insured banks across the country to find the best rates and then buy the CDs all held within one account at our independent custodian, TD Ameritrade. As the CDs mature every 6 months, you can decide to keep investing in the CD ladder, or have the money sent to you, or move it in the markets. We’ll take care of everything for you. Our annual flat fee for this service is $150, and you need at least $50,000 for the ladder to be effective. Call, email, or visit our website to schedule a complimentary meeting and start earning more interest today.

Knoxville Announces the Return of the Only Community-Wide

THE ELF ON ® THE SHELF

Scavenger Hunt in the Country

T HE

E L F O N T H E S H E L F ® is a magical Christmas tradition recognized in households around the world. Once again, magical Scout Elves will be sent from the North Pole by Santa and will land in Knoxville to be adopted by three dozen downtown Knoxville businesses. Families are invited to explore downtown and find where these little Scout Elves have landed each night for a fun-filled, holiday scavenger hunt. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is a magical story about how Santa’s Scout Elves help him manage his naughty and nice lists. Once a Scout Elf is adopted and named, the elf receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa about the day’s adventures. Each morning the Scout Elf returns to its family (or in this case, downtown Knoxville) and perches in a different place to watch the festive fun. The number one best-selling book, which has sold more than 11 million copies across the globe, was written by mother-daughter duo Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. Aebersold, a graduate of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, is delighted that Knoxville will again host this community-wide The Elf on the Shelf® scavenger hunt. “We’re looking forward to The Elf on the Shelf Adventure adding to the magic of the season and helping create fun family memories in downtown Knoxville,” she said. Scout Elves began landing in Knoxville to begin the scavenger hunt on November 24th. Children of all ages are invited to pick up a North Pole Pass at any of the participating businesses to help guide them through the adventure. There will be fun, treats, and prizes along the way until the Scout Elves return to the North Pole on January 7th. Lucky for Knoxville, Santa granted these Scout Elves special permission to spend some extra time in the city after Christmas. Mast General Store, the downtown Knoxville Santa-Approved Scout Elf Adoption Center, along with the Downtown Knoxville Central Business Improvement District (CBID) and Visit Knoxville, are sponsoring the fun, which is part of a jam-packed, season-long, holiday schedule of events in downtown Knoxville. Information about the scavenger hunt can be found at www.downtownknox.org/elf. Making an Impact During the Season of Giving

D

URING THE COURSE of 48 hours, as many as 20 floral donations – from weddings, events, memorial services, and grocery stores – can be transformed into more than 100 beautiful bouquets. These bouquets will be delivered to individuals in area hospitals, assisted living facilities, hospice care centers, and community health organizations. The key to the swift journey from donation to delivery: Dozens of dedicated Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) volunteers. The bouquets created by their efforts spread joy to recipients, and medical research shows that a positive attitude quickens the healing time associated with illness. There are many ways to get involved with RAF. Volunteers can pick up floral and vase donations, deconstruct donated floral arrangements, create beautiful bouquets, assist with workshop organization, process donated vases, and assist at special events. Many groups and organizations will hold vase drives; to date, RAF has recycled more than 91,000 vases! “The volunteers are the heart of this mission,” said Mandie Thacker Beeler, Program Director. “Each one shares a bit of themselves with the recipient, whether it’s by washing vases, deconstructing a

floral donation, arranging flowers for a new bouquet, or spending a moment visiting with a recipient during the delivery.” During this season of giving, we hope you find a way to get involved with RAF’s mission and share with others. RAF has delivered more than 80,000 bouquets in Knoxville, and each delivery is a special, unexpected moment of kindness. The impact is felt not only by recipients, but also by family members, nurses, facility staff members, and many more. “As a volunteer at Random Acts of Flowers, I thought I would only be ‘delivering ’ kindness, which is a reward in itself, but I have received kindness directly from staff and other volunteers,” said Anetha Grant, RAF volunteer. “We really care about one

another, and what a bonus it is to work with so many smiling volunteers!” To donate or learn more about how to get involved with Random Acts of Flowers, call 865-633-9082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org. Random Acts of Flowers improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in health care facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness.

The Grainger Foundation Supports Ijams Nature Center, Inc. T HE GRAINGER FOUNDATION, an independent, private foundation in Lake Forest, Illinois, donated $10,000 to Ijams Nature Center, Inc. in support of the nature center’s new Nature Preschool, which is scheduled to open August 2018. The preschool will focus on helping children develop a solid foundation for lifelong learning while cultivating a love of nature that will serve as the basis for a conservation ethic later in life. “This grant will allow Ijams to prepare the Miller Building and its grounds on the Ijams family’s original homesite to become a place for children ages three to five to explore and learn about nature,” said Amber Parker, Ijams Executive Director. “Our goal is for these preschoolers to spend 80% of their time outdoors. Part of this grant will be used to purchase desks, chairs, and supplies, but the majority will go toward funding a nature play area and renovating the building’s deck to provide a space for outdoor education activities. We are extremely grateful to The Grainger Foundation for its generosity.” The new Nature Preschool will offer a morning and an afternoon session five days a

Ijams also plans to offer a morning-only Nature Preschool Summer Camp prior to the school’s fall opening to allow younger children to experience an age-appropriate version of its Nature Adventure Day Camp.

Ijams will host open houses on December 7 and December 12 from 5 to 7 pm for individuals interested in learning more about the new Nature Preschool, 2018 summer camps, and other activities at the nature center. This donation was recommended by Renee Trexler, Operations Manager of W.W. Grainger, Inc.’s Knoxville location. Grainger has been a part of the Knoxville business community for more than 60 years as the leading broad line supplier of maintenance, repair, and operating products. The Grainger Foundation was established in 1949 by William W. Grainger, founder of W.W. Grainger, Inc. Ijams Nature Center is a non-profit, 315acre educational nature center for all ages, abilities, and walks of life. Located just three miles from downtown Knoxville, Ijams features 12 miles of hiking and mixed-use trails, a public access river dock, swimming, boating, biking, and more. The Ijams grounds and trails are open every day from 8 am until dusk. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. Healthier Holiday Entertaining A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

D

ECADENT MEALS are

often part of celebrations, but for those looking for a healthier holiday, it can feel like you must choose between your nutrition goals and the foods you love. Swearing off your favorite seasonal foods could make you feel like a Scrooge, but a few simple cooking and entertaining hacks will let you enjoy the treats you love while keeping your health top of mind. Amazing appetizers It might seem counterintuitive, but eating before a big meal can be a smart step for healthy living. Try creating a crudité platter with a variety of fresh veggies. If you make dip, swap mayonnaise and sour cream for Greek yogurt, which provides similar flavor and texture without the calories. Fill up on this healthy pre-meal snack and you’ll eat less during dinnertime. Better baking Replace half the sugar in baking recipes with Stevia In The Raw Bakers Bag, a zero calorie sweetener made with extracts from the sweet leaves of the stevia plant. By keeping half of the regular sugar, you still achieve the proper browning, rising, and caramelizing only sugar can provide, but the swap allows you to cut calories without sacrificing sweetness. In fact, up to 700 calories are saved for every cup of

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2017

sugar that is swapped out. Baking with Stevia In The Raw Bakers Bag is a simple hack for baking any time of year, as it is formulated so that 1 cup has the same sweetness as 1 cup of sugar, so no conversion is needed. Great gravy Gravy is a staple at holiday feasts, but it’s also heavy in calories and fat. If you’re making homemade gravy, try putting it into the refrigerator before serving. As gravy chills, the fat collects at the top and you can skim it off before re-warming and serving to guests. When eating, resist the urge to dump gravy over everything on your plate. A light drizzle on potatoes and meat provides plenty of flavor. Petite plates One of the simplest healthy entertaining tricks has nothing to do with food and more to do with psychology. Whether you use a big or small plate, people tend to fill the whole thing up. So instead of those grand china dishes, use moderately sized plates, and you’ll likely end up eating less. Your eyes will see a full plate, and your belly will be satisfied. Have you been tasked with creating a holiday dessert but want a healthier option that will still please everyone’s sweet tooth? Be inspired by this recipe that features two classic holiday flavors: Chocolate and peppermint.

Chocolate Peppermint Truffle Tart Ingredients:

Cookie Crust

» 9 ounces chocolate wafer cookies » 5 tablespoons butter, melted » 1 tablespoon Sugar In The Raw » 1 tablespoon Stevia In The Raw

Chocolate-Peppermint Filling

» 12 ounces unsweetened chocolate, roughly chopped » 5 tablespoons cold butter, cut into cubes » 1 1/4 cup heavy cream » 3/4 cup Sugar In The Raw » 3/4 cup Stevia In The Raw » 1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract

Whipped Cream

» 1/2 cup heavy cream » 2 teaspoons Sugar In The Raw » 1 teaspoon Stevia In The Raw Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 9-inch round springform pan with removable bottom and sides. In the bowl of a food processor, pulse chocolate cookies until fine. Transfer to a bowl and stir in melted butter, Sugar In The Raw, and Stevia In The Raw until well combined. Press mixture into bottom and up the sides of pan. Bake crust until firm, about 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. In a medium bowl, add chocolate and butter. In a small saucepan, bring cream, Sugar In The Raw, and Stevia In The Raw to a boil, whisking constantly until Sugar In The Raw and Stevia In The Raw are completely dissolved. Pour cream over the chocolate and butter and whisk until chocolate has melted. Stir in peppermint and pour into crust. Chill at least one hour. In a large bowl, beat cream, Sugar In The Raw, and Stevia In The Raw on high speed until stiff peaks form, about 1 minute. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve tart. Slice tart, top with whipped cream, and dust with cocoa powder.

A Healthier Lifestyle Starts with a Single Phone Call

M

BY ANDREW HENDERSON

ANY OF US have had near identical conversations with our

family doctor when reviewing the results of our latest annual physical examination. We’ve added a few extra pounds since our last exam, our blood pressure is slightly elevated, and our bad cholesterol is a bit higher than last year. We’re really not surprised by our results. When working around the house or engaging in physical activities, we tire much more easily, our heart races, and we feel less ambition. Last year’s New Year’s resolution included personal goals to exercise more, to lose weight, and to eat healthier. In fact, you made the same resolution the year before, and the year before that, too. And you’ll probably make the same resolution in 2018. Sound familiar? Well, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans make similar resolutions every year and, like you, never follow through. Could 2018 be any different? Why not make 2018 your breakout year where you achieve your fitness goals to feel and look better, increase your personal stamina, and add years onto your life? Sound like a pipe dream? It doesn’t have to be. All it takes is a single phone call to Fitness Together. Nashville Ballet Celebrates 10 Years of Nashville’s Nutcracker December 2-23

celebrating 10 years of Nashville’s Nutcracker December 2-23 at TPAC’s Jackson Hall with all-new magical elements to mark the occasion. Since its world premiere in 2008, Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO, Paul Vasterling’s, original spin on the classic has cemented its place as one of Music City’s most beloved holiday traditions. Nashville Ballet premiered The Nutcracker in 1989, but the production was reinvented as Nashville’s Nutcracker in 2008 with a unique concept incorporating Nashville’s vibrant past along with new choreography, sets, costumes, and on-stage magic tricks. Now entering its 10th year, Nashville’s Nutcracker will debut additional elements to celebrate the milestone. “I added a few surprises for this anniversary year as a special way of saying thank you to the community for making us a part of their holiday tradition,” said Vasterling. “For the first time, it’ll snow on the audience during the iconic snow scene. Another big addition is the debut of a new youth cast role, the Dancing Bear Cavalry, which allows us to welcome even more young dancers on stage with us.” Along with 54 members of Nashville Ballet’s professional dance company and second company, Nashville’s Nutcracker will feature a youth cast of 296 young dancers from School of Nashville Ballet and the community - the largest youth cast in the organization’s history. The local dancers, along with 60 members of the GRAMMY® Award-winning Nashville Symphony performing Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score, will transport audiences into a holiday dreamland filled with clever nods to Music City’s sparkly past, including well-known landmarks and characters.

Beginning at the 1897 Centennial Exposition in Nashville, Clara and her Uncle Drosselmeyer meet a colorful cast of characters from faraway lands. When Uncle Drosselmeyer gifts Clara with a wooden Nutcracker on Christmas Eve, the toy magically transforms to life as a handsome prince and leads her through a remarkable adventure. Clara visits everyone from the Snow Queen to the Sugar Plum Fairy, including the spellbinding characters she met at the Exposition. When Clara finally returns home, the audience is left to decide if it was all just a dream - or not. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased in person at the TPAC box office in downtown Nashville, by phone at 615-782-4040, or at www.NashvilleBallet.com. A complete performance schedule and more information can be found at www.NashvilleBallet.com/ Nashvilles-Nutcracker-2017.

Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission, Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Contributions from local, regional and national institutional funders and community partners, as well as hundreds of generous individuals, provide ongoing support of Nashville Ballet’s missioncritical programs.

DAVE BARNES B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

F

OR THE PAST few years, many Knoxvillians

have made it a new Christmas tradition to attend the special annual Christmas shows of acclaimed singer/ songwriter, Dave Barnes. In fact, it’s popularity has grown to the point that, for the first time, a second show has been added. Dave recently shared some details about the show and what we can expect. “It’s always one of my favorite things to do every year. I think this is our sixth or seventh year doing it, which really wasn’t on purpose. I did the first tour – my first Christmas tour – with my buddy, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and his band, and I put out a Christmas album, like I said, six or seven years ago. We had such a good time, and the response was so good. Thankfully that Christmas album – I have two Christmas albums – when it came out, it really resonated. I remember iTunes did a big feature on it at the time and did a free download of one of the songs. It really kind of caught. It’s fun to see a lot of fans who didn’t know my music to find me through that. “Christmas music is so cool, because it really, maybe as much or arguably more than any other music, becomes a part of your life because it’s every year. You can love a record, but there’s not a schedule for when you’re going to listen to it all the time. So you can easily forget a record and five years later go, ‘Ah! I loved

32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2017

Hotel California, but I forgot about it!’ But Christmas music – every year it’s going to pop up. “The most covered song of all time is White Christmas, which people mistakenly say Yesterday. But the reason it’s so covered is there’s a venue for it every year. It’s been fun, because we did this tour, then the next year we did another one on our own, and then it caught on, because we realized that Christmas shows are sort of – in the best way – the lowest hanging fruit, because people always want something to do during Christmas, and they love to do the same thing every Christmas. It’s literally an algorithm that you can’t get wrong if you just have a good show. So if you can give them something that’s good, they’re gonna go, ‘Yeah. We’re in. We’ll see ya every year!’ And you’re like, ‘Yes!’” Continuing with regards to what Barnes and his band put into the show, he said, “We put a lot of effort into it. It’s not easy music to play. It’s really fun, because it’s always engaging to us – the band – to remember how stuff goes. This is a really weird thing to say: It’s sort of like church music. Some of it is church music, because of the season. It feels like you’re sort of leading people through an emotional journey; like you’re the conductor of these emotional moments, which every concert is, but I think especially at a Christmas show. ‘I’m reminding you of what it feels like at Christmas when I sing this. Oh my gosh! It makes me think of my sixth Christmas when this happened.’ You know what I mean? It can almost feel like church in some ways. It can sound sacrilegious, because it’s got such a tie to people, and you’re guiding them there. It’s fun, and every year it’s more fun, because we’re slowly adding markets. It’s pretty easy listening to me, which I love. I feature a lot of special guests. The band guys do their own songs, too. It’s really fun. It’s really a benevolent show for me to play... in the best way. It’s a very communal show for us. It’s not something that I get too stressed out about, because I’m always excited about getting up there and being a part of it myself.” You can be a part of Knoxville’s extraordinary Christmas tradition by purchasing your tickets now for either of Dave Barnes’ two shows at the Bijou Theatre at www.knoxbijou.com. Also, there is so much more to this interview. Please visit www. boomerocity.com to learn about Dave Barnes’ insights to the music business, as well as what he shares about his soon-to-bereleased new album. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

So Just How Many Ways Are There to Clean an Oriental Rug? BY KERRY MCDUFFIE, OWNER OF SUPERIOR CARPET & RUG CLE ANING

T

RUTH BE TOLD, probably hundreds

of ways. As many as the human mind can imagine. I’ve heard of Oriental rugs being washed on the driveway of a home using a garden hose, dishwashing detergent, and a stiff broom. Some carpet cleaning companies have even cleaned Oriental rugs that were still in place on hardwood floors, using the same methods as those used to clean wall-to-wall carpeting. Then there are the rugs that are hung in the backyard and beaten with a broom. There may be hundreds of ways to clean an Oriental rug, but based on decades of experience, and after considerable input from Oriental rug experts, including rug weavers themselves, there’s only one way to clean them thoroughly and safely, and that’s by washing them. The problem for DIY homeowners, however, is that an 8x10 rug can easily weigh several hundred pounds when wet and is nearly impossible to wash by hand. That’s why we designed our very own rug spa that uses our proprietary 11-step washing process that will thoroughly and safely wash your fine Oriental rugs. Our highly specialized process allows us to safely move your rugs throughout our facility through our multiple step inspection process, dye stabilization test, pre-vacuuming, pre-conditioning, washing, water extraction, pH neutralizing, drying, grooming and combing, fringe cleaning, post-vacuuming, and final inspection. As is plain to see, it’s virtually impossible to duplicate this washing process on your driveway, in your home, or in your backyard. In fact, many of these alternative methods can actually permanently damage your fine Oriental or area rugs by abrading them on concrete surfaces, causing the dyes to migrate (bleed), or by adversely changing your rug’s pH. Not a DIY project, Oriental rug washing is best left to an experienced professional – that is, if you value your rugs and your back. With just a few weeks before holiday guests begin arriving, isn’t it time to call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning for all your upholstery, carpet cleaning, and rug washing needs? Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Chinese Pistache LAST

B Y J A M E S N E W B U R N , A S S I S TA N T D I R EC TO R , U T G A R D E N S , K N OX V I L L E

F A L L I was driving in my neighborhood and noticed a beautiful planting of street trees that was unfamiliar to me. What drew my attention was the symmetrical round shape, the delicate looking – almost lacy – foliage, and the brilliant redorange fall color. I knew that this particular landscape had been designed by one of my University of Tennessee colleagues, Garry Menendez, whose office is right down the hall from mine, so it was to him that I turned for identification. He told me that the trees in question were Chinese pistache trees (Pistacia chinensis) and agreed that they were beautiful specimens. I had to learn more. Related to the pistachio nut tree, P. chinensis has many qualities that make it a desirable choice for home or commercial landscapes. It is a smaller tree that typically grows to an average of 30 to 35 feet with an equal spread that makes it ideal for smaller urban or suburban yards. The compound leaves usually have between 10-12 leaflets, which give the tree a fine texture and create a refreshing dappled shade effect. Chinese pistache is disease resistant and can tolerate heat, drought, a wide range of soil conditions, and moderate air pollution. This is

Photo by J. Reeves, courtesy UTIA

why you may see it, as I did, often planted as a street tree. The most striking characteristic, however, is its fall color. As temperatures cool and days shorten, the foliage turns crimson red, brilliant orange, or even yellow, often on the same tree. Leaf color can vary from tree to tree, but it is often very eye-catching. The smaller leaves make for easy fall-clean-up. Chinese pistache trees are either male or female, and the 1/4-inch seed produced on the female trees can be equally attractive, growing in clusters that are red in color before ripening

to a rich blue. Unlike its pistachio nut cousin, Chinese pistache fruit is inedible, although birds seem to enjoy them. Hardy in zones 6-9, the tree may survive even a little further north with some winter wind and chill protection, for instance next to a fence or wall. Young trees in the nursery may appear gawky, but given time they will grow to a nice straight tree. Staking with a bamboo cane will help ensure a straight trunk, but this is not necessary. Nice specimens can be seen at the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson, in the north shrub border, and on the UT Institute of Agriculture campus in Knoxville next to the Brehm Animal Science Building. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www. ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Santa’s Suggestion for Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces Next Spring

I

A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com

F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with retractable screens, will you be able to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces next spring? The answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s Santa’s solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experiences. They provide much needed shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends can enjoy their patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be seamlessly blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to coordinate your screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. If you’re uncertain what to buy your family for Christmas this year, take Santa’s advice and install retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee, and create a season of memorable out-of-door experiences with family and friends next year. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com. Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 www.tennesseescreens.com www.phantomscreens.com

EEPING CLIENTS’ best interests

at heart is one reason why Dayton’s Pest Control Services was voted the Best Pest Control Service for the 4th year in a row in the News Sentinel’s Best of Knoxville Campaign! Many longtime customers can attest to the fact that Dayton’s continues to be innovative with enhanced services. Dayton’s was the first pest control service to offer a Mosquito Control Management Program, which was well received with many customers using this service every year since its inception. When the bedbug craze started, Dayton’s immediately sent technicians to a special Bedbug University for training on how to identify a bedbug infestation and take care of the problem for good. As new technologies are developed for termite control, Dayton’s is right there implementing new treatment protocols. Radon identification and mitigation experienced a surge in interest as consumers became more health conscious. Dayton’s partnered with radon industry experts to offer the most effective solutions to protect families from this dangerous carcinogen that you can’t see, smell, or taste. Another homeowner concern is moisture in a crawl space, which can cause mold and structural deterioration. Dayton’s can resolve these issues with a leading edge system used nationwide called CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation. December in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

I

KNOW that most of you are too busy doing holiday stuff to worry about your garden, but there are a few things that can still be done in your yard if you need to get away from the holiday chaos for a while. » You can still clean. As things die back, you can remove the stalks and get up the leaf debris. » You can still weed. Lord knows the weeds never stop growing! If you can keep the weeds from getting a head start this winter, you will be a happier person next spring. » You can still plant. Our ground seldom freezes, so you can continue to plant most trees and shrubs all winter long. There are a few that won’t like it, however, so give us a call or stop by if you have questions. » If you need more excuses to go outside this month, tell everyone that you are going out to collect Christmas decorations! Those of you with older, established lawns probably have a plethora of plants to choose from. Boxwoods, hollies, magnolias, and nandinas have great foliage to mix with the typical fir and cypress greenery. Winterberry hollies, nandinas, and beautyberries can add a

splash of color with their berries. Re m e mb e r t h at you are pruning your shrubs when you take those cuttings, so don’t go overboard! After you have taken your cuttings, use pliers to crush the ends of the stems and then give them a nice long soak. Overnight is best and will help them last for several weeks. There are also other things that you can use for décor. Hydrangea blooms, seed pods, and pine cones are great either natural or spray painted. » Keep your feeders full and clean, and keep your wintersafe birdbaths full and clean. Metal and plastic birdbaths can stay out year-round, and we have heaters for really cold nights. Now let’s move on to holiday plants and their care. » Amaryllis bulbs are frequently given as gifts, and the flowers are stunning. Their care is fairly simple: Put the bulb in a sturdy pot and leave 1/3

of the bulb above the soil. Put them in a sunny area, and don’t overwater them. Once the bloom stalk goes up, you may need to stake it to keep it stable. Rotate the pot every few days to keep it from leaning, and cut the stalk back after the flowers fall off and it turns yellow. It will send out leaves, and you can basically treat it as a houseplant. Trying to get them to re-bloom “on time” is a chore that starts in late September, so call us next year if you are interested. » The Christmas cactus can live for decades if given proper care. They are a tropical cactus, however, and do not like hot afternoon sun or being allowed to dry out completely. If they dry out after they have set buds, they will throw all their buds off and refuse to bloom. Once it finishes blooming, you can cut back on the water a bit and let it rest. Resume regular watering and fertilizing in the spring. They enjoy living outside in the summer in a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. Re-blooming is determined by daylight hours and temperature, so call for instructions in October. » Now let’s talk about the Christmas Diva: The poinsettia. It is beautiful, but it is picky, delicate, and frequently misunderstood. It is a tropical plant that someone decided would be perfect for a winter holiday. Not a good combination. When I say it is tropical, I mean it does not like cold AT ALL. More than a minute of exposure to freezing temps will turn it black. It is also very fragile, and the branches will break off easily. Here is my advice: 1. Buy from a grower, not a box store or a grocery chain. They have no idea how to take care of poinsettias, and you are usually buying a plant that is doomed. 2. Don’t buy one that is already wrapped. Plastic sleeves are a fungal breeding ground and camouflage damage. It should be wrapped for transportation, however. Just pull that plastic sleeve down or cut it off when you get home. 3. Don’t expose it to cold air. No vents, no open doors, and no sitting it outside unless the temperature is above 50 degrees. 4. Water it in the sink with the foil wrap removed, and let it drain. Then put it back in the foil. Don’t let it stand in water or it will get root rot. From all of us at Meadow View, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year! We hope to see you soon, because we get really bored in the winter.

Setting the Perfect Holiday Table E

V E R Y H O L I D A Y season

you invest hours planning and preparing the perfect menu for each celebration you host. While easy and fun may be the name of the game for buffet-style events, when it’s a sit-down soiree, the delightful cuisine you produce deserves a presentation worthy of your efforts. A beautifully set table can elevate your holiday dinner from just great to simply perfect. “Table-setting is an art form anyone can learn to execute beautifully,” said Mary Bernardo, Director of Product Development at Princess House, a leading provider of unique and exclusive cookware, food storage, and home and entertainment products. “Simple touches like elegant holiday plates, colorful linens, and an eye-catching centerpiece ensure a holiday table looks as inviting as the food smells.” Bernardo and the table décor experts at Princess House offer these tips for creating a beautiful holiday dinner table: Layers look lovely Tablecloths, placemats, table runners, and chargers not only help protect your table from spills and scrapes, but they also create a lovely backdrop for dishes, glasses, stemware and - of course - the food. Layering these 46

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2017

items adds depth and interest to the tabletop. Consider starting off with a simple white or red tablecloth, and then add either placemats in seasonal patterns or a festive runner. If chargers take up too much room on the table (or too much of your holiday budget), you can layer dinner and lunch plates to create the same effect. For example, place a Pavillion Berry Dinner Plate beneath a Poinsettia Lunch Plate. The solid deep red of the dinner plate is the perfect complement to the elegant creamy background and poinsettia pattern of the lunch plate. Keep dishware seasonal and simple “It’s been said simplicity is the soul of elegance, and that’s certainly true when you’re setting a holiday dinner table,” said Bernardo. Choose dishes with a basic white or cream background accented with a traditional holiday motif. Flatware should also be simple; if your everyday collection is in good condition, feel free to use it for your holiday celebrations. If you don’t have enough pieces, supplement with basic flatware that’s free of embellishment or heavy designs. Glassware should also be simple and, whenever possible, multi-functional. For example, stemless wine glasses can be used for soft drinks and water, as well as wine.

Add seasonal accents Even the simplest table setting can feel festive when you add holiday-specific touches, like napkin rings in jewel green or red, a centerpiece filled with evergreen or holly, and twinkling candles. For a centerpiece that’s festive and practical, consider using your favorite holiday serving bowl, such as a crystal bowl, for the foundation. Then add holiday décor items, like mini Christmas packages, your favorite Christmas tree decorations, or a pillar candle in a holiday hue like red, green, or snow white. Top with a few sprigs of evergreen, holly, or fresh flowers and you have an easy, elegant DIY centerpiece. Finally, don’t overlook the opportunity to extend the table’s festive atmosphere to the chairs as well. You can add to their elegance by adding simple decoration such as a miniholiday wreath strung on a piece of ribbon and looped over the back of the chair. “The dinner table is where holiday magic occurs,” said Bernardo. “With a few special touches, you can set a holiday table that’s perfect for the festive and welcoming spirit of the season.” For more holiday décor and inspiration for your table, visit www.princesshouse.com.

A Christmas Perspective

ECENTLY I WAS WHINING

about my messy home. My husband, John, agreed with me and mentioned a couple of out-ofcontrol areas. He knew I had my work cut out for me. As I stood there doing the dishes a few moments later, I was feeling blessed and thankful that my husband is so understanding. I was also feeling a little guilty, because I have done more than my share of playing this week. John left for work and my 14-year-old son remarked in a conspiratorial whisper that he “couldn’t believe how upset dad was!” What? How could we have interpreted that moment so differently? Rewind a few years... In 2012, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. After a botched surgery, I was left without a voice for seven long months. I became desperate and depressed. In January 2013, some friends prayed my voice would be restored, and that very day, I received an

amazing gift. I went from a barely audible whisper to regaining about 75% of my voice. I can now talk to my family and friends and on the phone, although I am unable to sing or be heard in noisy settings. If I had simply lost 25% of my voice, I’d likely be frustrated, but having come from nothing to 75% has given me a new perspective, and I am so grateful. When we began the Surface Doc company in 2008, the economy was in a recession. Those first few months we nearly starved as we waited for the phone to ring. We had several friends who blessed us with meals and even a grocery gift card. We were in dire circumstances! One of our first clients was a pizzeria who paid in pizza trade. We ate pizza for a solid week – breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The kids loved that week, and we were so thankful to be able to put “food” on the table. We came through that challenging season feeling loved as we were ministered to by friends and family.

Christmas is a season where we are particularly mindful of our blessings. As I reminisce over the last decade or so, it is obvious that the seasons of great personal growth took place during particularly difficult experiences. I am reminded that the Lord CAN change any situation we find ourselves in. But, when the circumstances don’t change, our perspective has an opportunity for growth. My desire this season is to do a better job looking to Him instead of my circumstances. Perhaps this is the cry of your heart as well. Wherever we find ourselves, God’s grace is sufficient to carry us. It is our heartfelt prayer that each of us feels the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and His blessings that surround us. Merry Christmas from Surface Doc.

Creative Arts Help Veterans Reclaim Their Voice A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

F

OR ANGELA WALKER, music

was her first love, her passion, and her whole identity. “Once a singer, always a singer,” she often says. That was true even after she joined the U.S. Navy in 1985. But what happened next forever changed Walker’s perspective on what it means to have a voice. When she was 26, Walker knew she had a calling to serve and protect her country and its ideals. She served as a naval airman and sang cadence in boot camp while training to work on helicopters. During boot camp, she developed a throat condition and lost her voice. When Walker was medically discharged, she was devastated. On top of that, Walker’s illness worsened, and she was later admitted to a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital, where she would meet a therapist who helped change her life. One day I met Jessie,” Walker recalled. “She played the piano and would encourage patients to sing along with her. She kept at me, until I gave in and sang ‘Summertime’ by Ella Fitzgerald. In that moment, I found my voice again.” 52

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2017

Once Walker began singing again, it was clear she still had talent. So much so that years later, she would become a five-time finalist at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF), which is open to veterans who participate in their local VA hospital’s creative arts therapy programs. Veterans can submit their work in the categories of performing arts, creative writing, and visual arts through their therapists for a chance to be selected for the NVCAF. Once selected, veterans from around the country join together for the week-long event with creative workshops, an art exhibit, meetand-greet, and a live stage show to display their talents. Today Walker volunteers at her local VA hospital to help others find their voice, in addition to traveling on tour and singing commercial jingles. Her story is not that different from many other veterans involved in art therapy programs, which help veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. Creative arts gives them an outlet to express themselves through various forms of art. Often this form of therapy is the lifesaving tool veterans need for rehabilitation.

The NVCAF is co-presented by the VA and the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization and one of the nation’s most prominent advocates for veterans’ needs. For 17 years, the ALA has partnered with the VA to co-present the festival to celebrate veterans and their talents. Thanks to volunteers from across the country, the ALA assists veterans with art projects and their travel to the NVCAF, assembles displays, and supports publicity, production, and materials development during the weeklong event. Many of the volunteers from ALA units make it a yearly commitment to donate their time to support this program. Sharon Neville helped host the NVCAF in her home state of North Carolina in 2014 and has volunteered at the event multiple times since then. “This experience is unlike any other,” said Neville, who began volunteering in 2013. “This festival is life-changing for all who attend, not just the participants. It’s a way for the public to understand a veteran’s journey, appreciate it, and celebrate it. It’s a story that many of us will never know, but we should start listening.”

UR PETS want to be included in our family Christmas fun. Dog toys have many benefits besides entertainment to deter pent-up energy. Toys alleviate the temptation to damage household items and reduce stress, helping to prevent behavioral problems. Safety in toy selection should be your top priority. In selecting the best toy for your dog, dimensions are important. If it’s too big, your dog will have trouble holding it in their mouth and paws. If it’s too small, the toy may become a choking hazard. Next, consider the materials and construction of the toy. If your dog is one to cuddle his toys, a stuffed toy may be the perfect complement to their personality. If your dog likes to roughhouse, look for durable materials that will stand up to their rough-and-tumble playing. Keep in mind that all dogs are different. Fido may prefer a simple ball, while Rex requires a complex puzzle to keep him engaged. It’s also a great idea to have

OLLY PARTON’S SMOKY MOUNTAIN

Adventures Dinner & Show continues its inaugural season with a new holiday tale that invites families on a journey that brings together special Christmas memories and magic that shaped Dolly and her family. The new show, which opened last month and continues through December 31, allows guests to make wonderful holiday memories and discover the true spirit of Christmas. The combination of festive holiday music, two million dollars in special effects, acrobatic feats from both performers and the show’s canine stars, a mischievous elf, a series of “reindeer games,” a moving live nativity, an ice skating spectacular, and many other unexpected surprises combine for a one-ofa-kind, “must see” show. This exciting new Christmas adventure is set in a small town that’s hit by a major snowstorm, which leaves the fate of the town’s Christmas celebration in the balance. The audience journeys with the

cast to learn whether their Christmas will be canceled or whether the storm sets the stage for the most miraculous Christmas ever. Elements of the regular show that have proven to be audience favorites this season will take on a holiday flair and deliver a joyful treat for the senses, including the Chinese poles, aerial silks suspended three stories above the stage, and in the amazing Electro-wheel. An exclusive Smoky Mountain Adventures version of The Nutcracker and fun with the classic “12 Days of Christmas” are sure to become audience favorites. The show concludes with a moving seasonal rendition of the mountain classic “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” and a Christmas light spectacular and special effects transform the town scenery into a captivating Winter Wonderland. “Thanks to the powerful story of when Dolly’s parents met and fell in love, Smoky Mountain Adventures has experienced an amazing debut season,” said Jamie Parish, General Manager of Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Adventures.

“We are excited about sharing more of this special story in our new holiday show, inspired by heartfelt moments that will capture the simple joys of Christmas. Our entire cast is looking forward to sharing this new component of Dolly’s family story – we know it will become a new holiday tradition for the families that come to experience it.” Another star of this yuletide show is the food, which is a mouthwatering feast of magnificent proportions. This Smoky Mountain holiday feast treats guests to tantalizing tastes inspired by some of Dolly’s favorite holiday recipes: A special holiday soup recipe, homemade buttery biscuits, spiral ham, pan fried chicken, old fashioned Southern dressing, a sweet potato treat, buttery corn on the cob, and Southern peach pie for dessert. Unlimited Pepsi, tea, and coffee are also part of the meal. For the complete Christmas show schedule, visit www.smokymountainadventures.com or contact the box office at 844-322-4400 for ticketing.

Here are a few tax tips to soften the impact of your RMDs: » For charitable giving, have a portion of your RMD paid directly to the charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. That amount is then excluded from your adjusted gross income. This is especially beneficial for retirees who do not itemize and receive no tax benefit for their charitable giving. » In the last couple of years, the Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC) has been introduced into the marketplace. By segregating up to 25% of your IRA (up to $125,000 per person) into a QLAC, the IRS allows you to exclude that amount from your annual RMD calculation. RMDs aren’t required to begin on these funds until age 85. A few other IRA tax-savings tips: » Consider defusing the RMD tax time-bomb with a multi-year strategy of Roth conversions. Each year convert a portion of your IRA to a Roth, being mindful to not push yourself into the next tax bracket. » Review your IRA beneficiary forms to ensure that both primary and contingent natural persons are named to preserve Stretch IRA tax rules for heirs. » In 2015, the IRS issued a ruling that specifically allows the after-tax portion of a 401(k) to be rolled into a tax-free Roth IRA. This is a game changer for people who have too much income to contribute directly to a Roth IRA. And self-employed people can set up an individual Roth 401(k) plan and add up to $53,000 ($59,000 if you are over age 50) each year. If you look ahead into the next 20-30 years of retirement and believe that tax rates will be higher in the future than they are now, it pays to create a tax strategy today. Uncle Sam is a co-owner of your IRA – it’s up to you to decide how much he gets to keep.

DO YOU HAVE A RETIREMENT TAX EXPERT? LIVING IN RETIREMENT REQUIRES DIFFERENT TAX STRATEGIES. UNDERSTANDING THOSE DIFFERENCES IS WHAT WE DO. WE DON’T JUST PREPARE TAXES, WE LOOK FOR WAYS TO MINIMIZE THEM.

POINTS OF FOCUS: • Tax efficient order of investment withdrawal • Minimizing tax on Required Minimum Distributions • Structuring your investments to reduce Social Security tax

It’s Not a Race! H

APPY DECEMBER! I

know... every year just seems to fly by, and we find ourselves at the end of yet another year. I hope it has been a good year for you. I hope, despite the challenges that you have faced, that you can remember times where others showed you love and kindness and support. May 2018 be even better. I want to end the year with a reminder to all of us parents that “it’s not a race.” What I mean by this is that we are not racing towards some unseen finish line when it comes to raising our children. For some reason, we tend to feel like we are under some time constraint that tells us we have to make sure our children have shed all of

their bad habits and have acquired every single lovely character trait that there is all before they turn 18. Right! Well, I have news for you… wrong! Parents, may I remind you to take a look in the mirror. Are you still working on shedding bad habits? Are you still trying to become more patient, less judgmental, more forgiving, less selfish, etc.? Of course we are, and we always will be. We must remember that it takes a lifetime, and even that’s not long enough, to work on becoming better. Too often parents can exasperate their children when trying to fix every little weakness and character flaw that their children exhibit. It’s not that we need to not care or quit trying to teach; however, we do need to be careful and understand that

sometimes it takes a lifetime to finally shed a bad habit. May we not expect perfection. May we celebrate the small steps of progress that our children make. May we not focus too much time on the personal flaws of our children, but celebrate their unique gifts and talents and personality. Be patient mom and dad. Trying to be good and act good is hard work. May we remember that. Happy holidays!

CHUCK NEGRON B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

I

F YOU’RE INTO rock music at all,

you’ve had to have heard Three Dog Night. If you’re a baby boomer, you for sure have. Songs like Joy to the World, Easy to Be Hard, Never Been to Spain, One, and many other songs by the band dominated the airwaves of the ‘70s and reportedly enjoyed 40 million in LP sales. Though a trio, the voice of Three Dog Night is often attributed to Chuck Negron. By the time the band disbanded in 1976, Negron had a very serious drug problem. In 1999, he chronicled his story in his autobiography, Three Dog Nightmare, which is being released this month in a revised version. It was about that book that Chuck and I talked by phone. I started off by mentioning to him that, from reading his book, it truly is a miracle that he is still alive. I asked him about that. “Yeah, well, I guess there’s a bigger plan for me. Ha! Ha! The book has become part of a program of many rehabs across America, and I’ve ended up speaking. Several months ago I spoke in Kansas for many judges, probation officers, and incarcerated men about addictions. It seems that I’m helping a lot of people understand addiction. It seems to be a

greater purpose for me.” Negron has been clean for quite a few years now, but I just had to ask if there’s any temptation still to go back to using. “That’s been a blessing to me,” he said. “I’m 26 years clean and sober, and I have not had the obsession to use – EVER – with my recovery. It’s been removed, and the miracle of that is that was my burden. I couldn’t get sober because the obsession was with me every minute. I couldn’t shake it. So it was a real blessing when it was removed.” At 75, Negron’s voice is still remarkably similar to its heyday quality. I asked him what he attributes that to. “It’s kind of you to say so,” he said. “I think a lot has to do with genetics and has much to do with preparation and work. I think for a singer, you have to sing. You have to work on your voice – especially as you get older. You have to train. You have to have strong muscles. The breathing. The stomach in good shape. It’s a muscle that breathes. There’s a lot to do. I take voice. I never took voice in my whole life, and I’ve taken it the last 15 years. I started taking voice to learn as much as I can to keep myself viable and learn, and I still am. Plus, I love to sing. It’s my – excuse the

saying – but it’s my voice. It’s how I express myself – the very free part of me. I love it! I love to sing!” I had to ask if Three Dog Night was going to reunite. “Nah, it’s not going to happen,” said Negron. “There was a time when Cory and Jimmy were alive that it could work – especially if we get Floyd Sneed back involved, because Floyd still plays and is a good drummer and a great guy. There was a time that was something I would’ve enjoyed. But once Cory and Jimmy died, there was no reason to do anything. It was me, Danny, Michael, and maybe Floyd. Besides all the genius that was the band and musicians, what made the name Three Dog Night special in my mind was three-part harmony. How can you do threepart harmony with two guys? So, it’s over. There’s no reason. That was my reason – to hear that beautiful sound; that powerful, guttural sound. It can’t be done. It would just be an interference in my life at this point that I don’t need.” When asked how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy is, he jokingly said, “Well, it’s probably too late to be remembered as a nice guy. Ha! Ha!” He then said that he wanted to be remembered as “someone who helped a lot of people. Turned his tragedy into someone’s victory.” The new addition of Three Dog Nightmare is available via various online outlets. You can also sign up for Negron’s blog at www. ChuckNegron.com. There is also a muchexpanded version of our chat on www. boomerocity.com, where he discusses his latest LP that he recorded with his daughters, as well as several other topics of interest. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Snap a Giant #SnowflakeSelfie

Asheville’s busy downtown sidewalks are dressed in holiday style, thanks to Winter Lights Downtown in Pack Square, with double the number of lights this year. » New: A 10-foot gilded purple snowflake serving as the pièce de résistance will make for the perfect #SnowflakeSelfie.

Winter Lights at Olmsted’s Garden

As the sun sets, the North Carolina Arboretum’s 434 acres transform into a glowing winter wonderland, strewn with nearly 500,000 lights. In its fourth year, the Winter Lights exhibit brings back favorites such as the 50-foot animated tree, model trains, and lighted Quilt Garden, while introducing new features like interactive motion-sensor games and even more lights and music. » Tip: Take advantage of “friends and family” pricing on Tuesdays, or go all out with the Winter Lights Holiday Tour and arrive in vintage style on a trolley.

America’s Largest Home – Brighter Than Ever

See Biltmore in a different, even more opulent light with its Candlelight Christmas Evenings. Biltmore staff deck the halls, lawn, and select estate locales with candlelight, firelight, and holiday lights – and the after-dark hours are the perfect time to take in the sparkle of a 50-foot fir. » New: This year even more lights and ornaments will illuminate Antler Hill Village. Don’t miss the recently renovated Winery’s tasting room for a particularly “sparkling” new display.

Handmade Holidays

Find unique gifts for friends and family – do your holiday shopping in the land of all things local and handmade at craft fairs, pop-up shops, and indie boutiques. Historic Biltmore Village and downtown’s Grove Arcade sparkle with holiday light displays, as does Asheville’s bustling Biltmore Park shopping district to the south. Pop in and out of galleries and independent stores featuring one-of-a-kind items for everyone on your list. Plan ahead to catch a special market like The Big Crafty’s Hand to Heart Holiday (December 2-3) or the Show & Tell Holiday Pop-Up Shop (December 7-20).

National Gingerbread House Competition Celebrates 25 Years

No Asheville holiday is complete without a glimpse at the National Gingerbread House Competition & Display at The Omni Grove Park Inn. Sippable Traditions

Make spirits bright… lively libations abound this time of year as well. Highland Brewing Company, Asheville’s oldest brewery, will once again release perennial favorite – and the city’s original seasonal beer – Cold Mountain Winter Ale. The ale will hit shelves and taps in limited distribution, along with its imperial version. Ninjabread Man Porter by Asheville Brewing Company also resurfaces for the season, spiced to perfection. » New: Global pop-up cocktail bar “Miracle” will spread the holiday cheer to Asheville at MG Road now through December 24. Launched in New York City in 2014, the concept has expanded to more than 50 locations around the world. Think creative holiday-themed concoctions served in custom glassware, kitschy, nostalgic, and vintage decorations, and a soundtrack to match.

Small-Town Christmas Charm

For the Kids (and Young at Heart)

Santa Claus is coming to the Blue Ridge Mountains by train as Craggy Mountain Line gets in the holiday spirit. The Jingle Bell Trolley Train Run takes off on the hour on Saturdays, now through December 17, and on Friday, December 23. The cost of $10 includes hot cocoa, cookies, and a meet ‘n’ greet with Santa.

Holiday Theater

Minutes from downtown you’ll find Asheville’s Norman Rockwell-esque neighbors with their own holiday traditions. Weaverville’s Candlelight Stroll (December 8) lights up the town’s Main Street, complete with music, horse and carriage rides, carolers, and children’s activities. The historic Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain hosts Deck the Trees, a tree-decorating contest benefiting a local charity. Christmas trees adorned around an “80 Years of Christmas” theme illuminate the hotel’s lobby for all to see – and vote on – throughout the month of December.

There’s no shortage of holiday performances to dazzle you this year, from the classic Nutcracker to a sidesplitting, adults-only Christmas sketch comedy. Watch the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy four ways with Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium (December 3) and three interpretations of the classic ballet by local dance companies at Diana Wortham Theatre. Asheville Community Theatre brings back a family favorite with the Best Christmas Pageant Ever, running December 1-17. And only in Asheville can you experience the Magnetic Theatre’s Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular – everyone’s favorite R-rated, envelope-pushing, holiday comedy (now through December 22). Rebalance and De-Stress B Y TO M I R M E N

ENTREPRENEURS

understand that owning and operating a small business is anything but a stress-free experience. Stress is an inevitable part of our lives and can often be accelerated when we find ourselves out of balance. Oftentimes we believe that we can achieve greater productivity simply by working longer hours, although often at the expense of family, friends, and other healthier pursuits. But, in fact, we often discover that when we neglect these other important facets in our lives, stress will often worsen, negatively impacting not only our business and important relationships with our customers and co-workers, but our family and friends as well. Most small business owners find that there isn’t always a direct correlation between the hours you invest in your small business and

the productivity that results. Just the opposite can result, where longer workdays can often diminish your productivity and increase the stress that you experience. Stress should not be taken lightly, as it can have a very serious impact on not only your health, but just about every other aspect of your life. While true stress-free living is unachievable, you can strive towards a balanced life that will allow you to truly appreciate and enjoy your relationships with your family, friends, co-workers, and customers and the success in business you are working to achieve. The secret is balance. Commit to making time for those special people in your life. Don’t risk sacrificing your relationships with these very special people in your life in pursuit of your dream. After all, it’s that same dream whose rewards you hope

to share with those closest to you in the future. Date night and quality time with your kids are not negotiable. Cherish them as rewards for the many hours of effort you have invested in your journey to achieve success in your small business endeavor. Sacrificing relationships for the sake of success is a recipe for disaster and a fool’s errand. Also, if you’re truly sincere in your desire to minimize the stress associated with building your small business and in achieving balance in your life and in your personal relationships, go one step further. Tell a trusted friend about your commitment to de-stress and rebalance, and then ask them to periodically review your efforts and to hold you personally accountable. An unwillingness to become personally accountable may signal your true lack of commitment.

to-do list always seems to get longer, not shorter. But it’s okay when he’s doing what he loves. Cantrill is principal of Blue Grass Elementary, one of seven Knox County schools selected for Tennessee’s 2017 Reward Schools, which are the top 5% of schools for academic achievement and the top 5% for student growth. “Being a Reward School means the hard work we put in each and every day is preparing our students for the future – being college – and career-ready,” said Cantrill. “It means that we are moving in the right direction, and I could not be more proud of our students, teachers, and staff.” Cantrill has worked in education for 20 years. Eight of those have been in administration, with five at Blue Grass. “I was influenced by a lot of great teachers in my life,” he said. “I wanted to be a role model for students the way my teachers 64

were for me. I enjoy working with children and helping them to achieve their goals. It is rewarding to watch my students grow and take pride in what they have accomplished.” Cantrill has a bachelor’s degree from Berea College and a master’s from Eastern Kentucky University. He begins each day greeting students as they arrive at school, followed by an administration meeting or parent meetings. The rest of his day is usually spent visiting classrooms to support teachers and ensure high-quality instruction, conducting walk-throughs and evaluations, planning for upcoming events and professional development, being visible in the halls, and being present for dismissal. HE GREATEST GIFT you can give your family this holiday season is to create a strong financial legacy in the New Year. Meeting with a financial advisor and placing your financial affairs in order is the foundation for building this legacy. To ensure your family and/or charities are the recipient of your legacy, and not the government, you should start with the following steps. When meeting with your financial advisor, you should first create a budget. Once your budget has been established based on your current living needs, be sure to stay on target with that budget. This will allow you to progress faster throughout the remaining steps in achieving a strong financial legacy. Next you will want to focus on using discretionary funds, the money left over after paying all expenses in your budget, to pay down any debt and build your credit. You may want to consider refinancing options to achieve a lower interest rate on current debt to pay it down quicker. The next step is saving and investing. All current investments, insurance, and savings should be properly evaluated and possibly changed to match your financial goals and objectives. The sooner you invest your money, the more potential for growth on your accounts. If you have paid down all your debt, you will be able to invest more of your money. The potential growth on your accounts may allow you to leave a larger legacy or to enjoy a more luxurious retirement life. Investment objectives and goals should be continuously assessed to protect your legacy. If your legacy is large enough, it is important to set up trusts to ensure your financial assets are protected once you are gone. Starting to plan for your future today will help to assure the success of your legacy. Under the guidance of your financial advisor, the legacy you have provided for will allow your family time to grieve without the financial concerns that can result. Your legacy will allow your memory to live on with both family members and future generations to come. As a financial advisor, I recommend meeting with a trusted advisor this holiday season to give your family the greatest gift: A strong financial legacy. AST MONTH I discussed how the Votiva system is harnessing the power of radiofrequency

energy and microneedling to improve the appearance of skin on multiple areas of the body. But that is only half of the Votiva story. Votiva is the industry’s first and only system indicated for sexual dysfunction and pelvis strengthening. It is a safe and effective treatment of common feminine health concerns such as stress incontinence, dryness and discomfort during intercourse, and it also enhances tightness, muscle tone, and external appearance. At Southeastern Dermatology, we are proud to introduce the women’s health team. Board Certified Nurse Practitioner, Deborah Connatser, will be performing these treatments. I have asked Deborah to provide her insight on why we wanted to offer this service to our clients: “Many of us are already proactive in order to maintain the health and function of our skin, or at least most of it. As women, we have expected and accepted certain changes to our bodies due to childbirth and hormonal changes. Some of these changes we may joke about, such as stress incontinence. Other changes are seldom discussed, because treatment options have been limited, including vaginal dryness/atrophy and labial hypertrophy. Finally we have a treatment that does not involve long-term medications or invasive surgical procedures! Votiva allows us restore the function and appearance of treatment area. I believe this empowers women to assert control of their feminine wellness and sexual health. Votiva is a non-invasive, painless treatment I am able to perform in our office in less than 30 minutes. I am excited to offer this potentially life-changing procedure to our patients in an environment where they are already comfortable!” If you are interested in learning more about Votiva, please join us on Thursday, December 14, at 5:30 pm at our west location. Call 865-474-8800 to RSVP.
