IS THE SEASON

for all things Christmas like decorations, parties, music, TV specials, and movies. Recently my husband, Tom, asked me what my favorite new and old Christmas movies are. I had to think for a while, especially about a favorite new Photo by D. Roberts Photography holiday movie. The Polar Express is my choice for a favorite new or more current Christmas movie. The graphics, music, and characters are all about the season, and I happen to like trains. But I am partial to old, black and white classic movies, and my favorites are many such as A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, and It’s A Wonderful Life. My top favorite though is The Bishop’s Wife, and in that movie, there is an ice skating scene that reminds me of my days skating in Wisconsin. As a teenager, I’d go ice skating with friends in the evenings at a park near our home. Winters in Wisconsin 4

are quite cold and frigid, so we’d bundle up and head out with our skates to the lake. There was a warming house where we could escape the cold or warm ourselves with a cup of hot chocolate. Many families enjoyed an evening of skating as Christmas music played, and we all enjoyed the season without cell phones or digital distractions. It was a simpler time when families turned off the TV, took time to wish friends and family a Merry Christmas, and make memories that would last a lifetime. Making memories like ice skating with friends and family is what I fondly remember about the season – not the gifts or the fruit cake but the people and the fun we had together. So I hope you make fond memories this Christmas season with your family that will be remembered for years. From all of us at Everything Knoxville, we wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

HEN JONATHAN Bradshaw was growing

up in Mississippi, little could he have imagined that so many of his childhood experiences would lead to the entrepreneurial lifestyle that he now pursues. His father’s hardware store was a second home to both Jonathan and his younger sister. They used to head directly to the store immediately after school to either complete their homework assignments or work alongside their father, which was often the case. Jonathan later discovered that working in the family’s second enterprise, a quick oil change business, further helped him to understand the need to work together as a team member and to provide the highest level of customer service possible in order to successfully differentiate their family owned company from the competition. After completing his education in dentistry at Louisiana State University’s School of Dentistry in 2007, Jonathan completed his General Practice Residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 2009 and continued at UT as an instructor in the school’s hospital residency program. Applying many of the same success principles he learned early on from his father, Jonathan launched his successful medical practice, Heritage Family Dentistry, first in Lenoir City and then in Farragut in 2017. The Heritage Family Dentistry team of medical professionals has earned a reputation for excellence by offering their patients the highest level of experienced and compassionate care combined with today’s state-of-the-art technology, honesty, and integrity. Everything Knoxville is excited to present this recent interview with Dr. Jonathan Bradshaw, DDS. EK: I’m sure many of our readers are interested in just what led you to pursue a career in family dentistry.

Jonathan: Growing up I was always interested in the medical field but wasn’t sure which area of medicine I wanted to pursue. After shadowing many different types of physicians, dentists, and surgeons, it became apparent that dentistry provided all of the things I was interested in for my career. As a dentist, I am able to build and maintain patient relationships, I utilize daily my clinical and surgical skills as I care for my patients, and there are many opportunities for me to serve those in need within the community and in the mission field. Family dentistry was the perfect fit. EK: How have your personal experiences in your father’s family businesses helped prepare you to launch and operate your medical practice? Jonathan: In dental school, we are not prepared and taught how to be business owners. We are superbly trained to be clinicians, but there are no classes on how to manage associates or provide the highest levels of customer service. Having grown up watching my father run his own small businesses, I saw firsthand the sacrifices, hard work, and dedication it took to own and operate a customer service-oriented business. I witnessed the day-to-day demands and satisfactions of managing employees, caring for clients, and meeting the needs of the public, all of which helped to equip me to build a patient-focused, family dental practice, where the highest levels of service and quality care are our first priorities. EK: How has being a husband and father of four youngsters better prepared you to succeed in the field of family dentistry? Jonathan: My family is a priority to me. It is a value instilled in me by my parents and one that my wife, Casey, and I aspire to every day. We have four children ranging from 4 to 10 years old. Understanding Photos by Ben Finch

the family dynamic helps me to better relate to the various people that come into our practice. Each person in a family is an individual. Just as each relationship within a family requires getting to know that person and his or her needs, we are committed to listening to and understanding each and every patient. There is no successful cookiecutter system for caring for people. At Heritage Family Dentistry, our goal is to build genuine relationships with each patient, addressing their individual needs and desires. EK: Describe briefly the services you offer at Heritage Family Dentistry in Farragut. Jonathan: We offer all aspects of general dentistry, ranging from dental implants and cosmetic dentistry to fillings, crowns, dentures, routine cleanings, and treatment for gum disease. We also provide sedation dentistry for patients who have anxiety regarding dental treatment. As a family practice, we see patients of all ages. EK: Patients that are new to Heritage Family Dentistry frequently offer positive comments on your friendly and attentive team of dental care providers. Just how important is your team to the patient’s experience? Jonathan: I couldn’t do what I do without my team. Each team member exemplifies the values that are important to making this practice successful. Every one of them truly cares about our patients and seeks to make them feel at home while providing the highest quality of personalized care. EK: One area of dentistry that you specialize in is the partial or full replacement of teeth resulting from injury, dental abnormalities, disease, or decay. What options do you offer patients that are experiencing one or more of these challenges? Jonathan: I offer a multitude of services to provide restorations, including partial dentures, crowns, and bridges. However, dental implants are one of the most effective ways to restore a patient’s smile and quality of life. Implants are the closest thing that man has developed that is capable of replacing our God-given natural teeth. EK: Can these alternatives that you’ve outlined be used for aesthetic purposes as well? Jonathan: Absolutely! Dental implants and the other restoration techniques we offer can be used to restore and enhance a patient’s smile. EK: Tell us a little more about dental implants. Why are they regarded as superior to dentures? Jonathan: Dental implantation is a process where teeth are securely fastened in the mouth by anchoring them to the jawbone. Implants are superior because they provide greater stability and comfort in chewing, speaking, and smiling and offer a higher level of

confidence that you most likely will not experience with traditional, removable dentures. EK: How can our readers best determine if they are a candidate for dental implants or the other options you offer? Jonathan: Patients can determine if they are a candidate by scheduling a consultation at our office. During this process, we will evaluate their overall health, perform an exam of their mouth, and evaluate the quality of their jaw bones with our state-of-the-art 3D CT x-ray. EK: Heritage Family Dentistry also offers patients several other exciting opportunities to take full advantage of the full range of services you offer. Company will present the annual holiday tradition The Nutcracker in their 46th anniversary season. The production features live music by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. The Appalachian Ballet Company will present four public shows: December 2 at 7:30 pm and December 3 at 3 pm at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium AND December 8 at 7:30 pm and December 9 at 3 pm at the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville. Dancing the role of the Nutcracker Prince will be dancer David Ward, who trained at English National Ballet School and most recently danced with Ballet Met in Ohio. This international guest artist will be partnering ballerina Laura Morton, the Sugarplum Fairy, formerly with The Atlanta Ballet. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production will include several new pieces of choreography featuring guests artists Addison Ector from Complexions, a New York-based dance company, as the Snow King and Jeff Wolfe as Herr Drosselmeyer. Owen Scarlett from Chicago will dance the role of the Arabian Prince. New sets, props, and costumes will bring the charming and spellbinding production to life. E L F O N T H E S H E L F ® is a magical Christmas tradition recognized in households around the world. Once again, magical Scout Elves will be sent from the North Pole by Santa and will land in Knoxville to be adopted by three dozen downtown Knoxville businesses. Families are invited to explore downtown and find where these little Scout Elves have landed each night for a fun-filled, holiday scavenger hunt. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is a magical story about how Santa’s Scout Elves help him manage his naughty and nice lists. Once a Scout Elf is adopted and named, the elf receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa about the day’s adventures. Each morning the Scout Elf returns to its family (or in this case, downtown Knoxville) and perches in a different place to watch the festive fun. The number one best-selling book, which has sold more than 11 million copies across the globe, was written by mother-daughter duo Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. Aebersold, a graduate of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, is delighted that Knoxville will again host this community-wide The Elf on the Shelf® scavenger hunt. “We’re looking forward to The Elf on the Shelf Adventure adding to the magic of the season and helping create fun family memories in downtown Knoxville,” she said. Scout Elves began landing in Knoxville to begin the scavenger hunt on November 24th. Children of all ages are invited to pick up a North Pole Pass at any of the participating businesses to help guide them through the adventure. There will be fun, treats, and prizes along the way until the Scout Elves return to the North Pole on January 7th. Lucky for Knoxville, Santa granted these Scout Elves special permission to spend some extra time in the city after Christmas. Mast General Store, the downtown Knoxville Santa-Approved Scout Elf Adoption Center, along with the Downtown Knoxville Central Business Improvement District (CBID) and Visit Knoxville, are sponsoring the fun, which is part of a jam-packed, season-long, holiday schedule of events in downtown Knoxville. Making an Impact During the Season of Giving

URING THE COURSE of 48 hours, as many as 20 floral donations – from weddings, events, memorial services, and grocery stores – can be transformed into more than 100 beautiful bouquets. These bouquets will be delivered to individuals in area hospitals, assisted living facilities, hospice care centers, and community health organizations. The key to the swift journey from donation to delivery: Dozens of dedicated Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) volunteers. The bouquets created by their efforts spread joy to recipients, and medical research shows that a positive attitude quickens the healing time associated with illness. There are many ways to get involved with RAF. Volunteers can pick up floral and vase donations, deconstruct donated floral arrangements, create beautiful bouquets, assist with workshop organization, process donated vases, and assist at special events. Many groups and organizations will hold vase drives; to date, RAF has recycled more than 91,000 vases! “The volunteers are the heart of this mission,” said Mandie Thacker Beeler, Program Director. “Each one shares a bit of themselves with the recipient, whether it’s by washing vases, deconstructing a

floral donation, arranging flowers for a new bouquet, or spending a moment visiting with a recipient during the delivery.” During this season of giving, we hope you find a way to get involved with RAF’s mission and share with others. RAF has delivered more than 80,000 bouquets in Knoxville, and each delivery is a special, unexpected moment of kindness. The impact is felt not only by recipients, but also by family members, nurses, facility staff members, and many more. “As a volunteer at Random Acts of Flowers, I thought I would only be ‘delivering ’ kindness, which is a reward in itself, but I have received kindness directly from staff and other volunteers,” said Anetha Grant, RAF volunteer. “We really care about one

The Grainger Foundation Supports Ijams Nature Center, Inc. T HE GRAINGER FOUNDATION, an independent, private foundation in Lake Forest, Illinois, donated $10,000 to Ijams Nature Center, Inc. in support of the nature center’s new Nature Preschool, which is scheduled to open August 2018. The preschool will focus on helping children develop a solid foundation for lifelong learning while cultivating a love of nature that will serve as the basis for a conservation ethic later in life. “This grant will allow Ijams to prepare the Miller Building and its grounds on the Ijams family’s original homesite to become a place for children ages three to five to explore and learn about nature,” said Amber Parker, Ijams Executive Director. “Our goal is for these preschoolers to spend 80% of their time outdoors. Part of this grant will be used to purchase desks, chairs, and supplies, but the majority will go toward funding a nature play area and renovating the building’s deck to provide a space for outdoor education activities. We are extremely grateful to The Grainger Foundation for its generosity.” The new Nature Preschool will offer a morning and an afternoon session five days a

Ijams will host open houses on December 7 and December 12 from 5 to 7 pm for individuals interested in learning more about the new Nature Preschool, 2018 summer camps, and other activities at the nature center. This donation was recommended by Renee Trexler, Operations Manager of W.W. Grainger, Inc.’s Knoxville location. Grainger has been a part of the Knoxville business community for more than 60 years as the leading broad line supplier of maintenance, repair, and operating products. The Grainger Foundation was established in 1949 by William W. Grainger, founder of W.W. Grainger, Inc. Ijams Nature Center is a non-profit, 315acre educational nature center for all ages, abilities, and walks of life. Swearing off your favorite seasonal foods could make you feel like a Scrooge, but a few simple cooking and entertaining hacks will let you enjoy the treats you love while keeping your health top of mind. Amazing appetizers It might seem counterintuitive, but eating before a big meal can be a smart step for healthy living. Try creating a crudité platter with a variety of fresh veggies. If you make dip, swap mayonnaise and sour cream for Greek yogurt, which provides similar flavor and texture without the calories. Fill up on this healthy pre-meal snack and you’ll eat less during dinnertime. » 1/2 cup heavy cream » 2 teaspoons Sugar In The Raw » 1 teaspoon Stevia In The Raw Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 9-inch round springform pan with removable bottom and sides. In the bowl of a food processor, pulse chocolate cookies until fine. Transfer to a bowl and stir in melted butter, Sugar In The Raw, and Stevia In The Raw until well combined. Press mixture into bottom and up the sides of pan. Bake crust until firm, about 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. In a medium bowl, add chocolate and butter. In a small saucepan, bring cream, Sugar In The Raw, and Stevia In The Raw to a boil, whisking constantly until Sugar In The Raw and Stevia In The Raw are completely dissolved. Pour cream over the chocolate and butter and whisk until chocolate has melted. Stir in peppermint and pour into crust. Chill at least one hour. In a large bowl, beat cream, Sugar In The Raw, and Stevia In The Raw on high speed until stiff peaks form, about 1 minute. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve tart. Slice tart, top with whipped cream, and dust with cocoa powder.

The Knoxville Museum of Art Presents the 2017 East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition

H E K N O X V I L L E Museum of Art and the Tennessee Art Education Association present the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition now through January 14, 2018. Now in its 12th year, the exhibition offers middle and high school students from around East Tennessee the opportunity to participate in a juried exhibition and to display their talents and be honored for their accomplishments in a professional art museum environment. Students, family, friends, and the public are invited to a reception and awards ceremony on Tuesday, December 5, from 6 to 8 pm at the Knoxville Museum of Art. The

event is free and open to the public. The East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition is open to students in grades 6-12, attending public, private, or home schools in 32 counties across East Tennessee. Fewer than a third (349) of the more than 1,073 entries in this highly competitive show made it through a rigorous jury process. The best-in-show winner will receive a purchase award of $500, and the artwork will become a permanent part of the collection of Mr. James Dodson, on loan to the Knoxville Museum of Art’s Education Collection. Since 2005, the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition has presented the work of nearly 4,000 students who have

Nashville Ballet Celebrates 10 Years of Nashville’s Nutcracker December 2-23

celebrating 10 years of Nashville’s Nutcracker December 2-23 at TPAC’s Jackson Hall with all-new magical elements to mark the occasion. Since its world premiere in 2008, Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO, Paul Vasterling’s, original spin on the classic has cemented its place as one of Music City’s most beloved holiday traditions. Nashville Ballet premiered The Nutcracker in 1989, but the production was reinvented as Nashville’s Nutcracker in 2008 with a unique concept incorporating Nashville’s vibrant past along with new choreography, sets, costumes, and on-stage magic tricks. Now entering its 10th year, Nashville’s Nutcracker will debut additional elements to celebrate the milestone. “I added a few surprises for this anniversary year as a special way of saying thank you to the community for making us a part of their holiday tradition,” said Vasterling. “For the first time, it’ll snow on the audience during the iconic snow scene. Another big addition is the debut of a new youth cast role, the Dancing Bear Cavalry, which allows us to welcome even more young dancers on stage with us.” Along with 54 members of Nashville Ballet’s professional dance company and second company, Nashville’s Nutcracker will feature a youth cast of 296 young dancers from School of Nashville Ballet and the community - the largest youth cast in the organization’s history. The local dancers, along with 60 members of the GRAMMY® Award-winning Nashville Symphony performing Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score, will transport audiences into a holiday dreamland filled with clever nods to Music City’s sparkly past, including well-known landmarks and characters.

Beginning at the 1897 Centennial Exposition in Nashville, Clara and her Uncle Drosselmeyer meet a colorful cast of characters from faraway lands. When Uncle Drosselmeyer gifts Clara with a wooden Nutcracker on Christmas Eve, the toy magically transforms to life as a handsome prince and leads her through a remarkable adventure. Clara visits everyone from the Snow Queen to the Sugar Plum Fairy, including the spellbinding characters she met at the Exposition. When Clara finally returns home, the audience is left to decide if it was all just a dream - or not. OR THE PAST few years, many Knoxvillians

have made it a new Christmas tradition to attend the special annual Christmas shows of acclaimed singer/ songwriter, Dave Barnes. In fact, it’s popularity has grown to the point that, for the first time, a second show has been added. Dave recently shared some details about the show and what we can expect. “It’s always one of my favorite things to do every year. I think this is our sixth or seventh year doing it, which really wasn’t on purpose. I did the first tour – my first Christmas tour – with my buddy, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and his band, and I put out a Christmas album, like I said, six or seven years ago. We had such a good time, and the response was so good. Thankfully that Christmas album – I have two Christmas albums – when it came out, it really resonated. I remember iTunes did a big feature on it at the time and did a free download of one of the songs. It really kind of caught. It’s fun to see a lot of fans who didn’t know my music to find me through that. “Christmas music is so cool, because it really, maybe as much or arguably more than any other music, becomes a part of your life because it’s every year. You can love a record, but there’s not a schedule for when you’re going to listen to it all the time. So you can easily forget a record and five years later go, ‘Ah! I loved

Hotel California, but I forgot about it!’ But Christmas music – every year it’s going to pop up. “The most covered song of all time is White Christmas, which people mistakenly say Yesterday. But the reason it’s so covered is there’s a venue for it every year. It’s been fun, because we did this tour, then the next year we did another one on our own, and then it caught on, because we realized that Christmas shows are sort of – in the best way – the lowest hanging fruit, because people always want something to do during Christmas, and they love to do the same thing every Christmas. It’s literally an algorithm that you can’t get wrong if you just have a good show. So if you can give them something that’s good, they’re gonna go, ‘Yeah. We’re in. We’ll see ya every year!’ And you’re like, ‘Yes!’” Continuing with regards to what Barnes and his band put into the show, he said, “We put a lot of effort into it. It’s not easy music to play. It’s really fun, because it’s always engaging to us – the band – to remember how stuff goes. This is a really weird thing to say: It’s sort of like church music. Some of it is church music, because of the season. It feels like you’re sort of leading people through an emotional journey; like you’re the conductor of these emotional moments, which every concert is, but I think especially at a Christmas show. ‘I’m reminding you of what it feels like at Christmas when I sing this. Oh my gosh! It makes me think of my sixth Christmas when this happened.’ You know what I mean? It can almost feel like church in some ways. It can sound sacrilegious, because it’s got such a tie to people, and you’re guiding them there. It’s fun, and every year it’s more fun, because we’re slowly adding markets. It’s pretty easy listening to me, which I love. I feature a lot of special guests. The band guys do their own songs, too. It’s really fun. It’s really a benevolent show for me to play... in the best way. It’s a very communal show for us. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Chinese Pistache LAST

F A L L I was driving in my neighborhood and noticed a beautiful planting of street trees that was unfamiliar to me. What drew my attention was the symmetrical round shape, the delicate looking – almost lacy – foliage, and the brilliant redorange fall color. I knew that this particular landscape had been designed by one of my University of Tennessee colleagues, Garry Menendez, whose office is right down the hall from mine, so it was to him that I turned for identification. He told me that the trees in question were Chinese pistache trees (Pistacia chinensis) and agreed that they were beautiful specimens. I had to learn more. Related to the pistachio nut tree, P. chinensis has many qualities that make it a desirable choice for home or commercial landscapes. It is a smaller tree that typically grows to an average of 30 to 35 feet with an equal spread that makes it ideal for smaller urban or suburban yards. The compound leaves usually have between 10-12 leaflets, which give the tree a fine texture and create a refreshing dappled shade effect. Chinese pistache is disease resistant and can tolerate heat, drought, a wide range of soil conditions, and moderate air pollution. This is

why you may see it, as I did, often planted as a street tree. The most striking characteristic, however, is its fall color. As temperatures cool and days shorten, the foliage turns crimson red, brilliant orange, or even yellow, often on the same tree. Leaf color can vary from tree to tree, but it is often very eye-catching. The smaller leaves make for easy fall-clean-up. Chinese pistache trees are either male or female, and the 1/4-inch seed produced on the female trees can be equally attractive, growing in clusters that are red in color before ripening

to a rich blue. Unlike its pistachio nut cousin, Chinese pistache fruit is inedible, although birds seem to enjoy them. Hardy in zones 6-9, the tree may survive even a little further north with some winter wind and chill protection, for instance next to a fence or wall. Young trees in the nursery may appear gawky, but given time they will grow to a nice straight tree. Staking with a bamboo cane will help ensure a straight trunk, but this is not necessary. Nice specimens can be seen at the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson, in the north shrub border, and on the UT Institute of Agriculture campus in Knoxville next to the Brehm Animal Science Building. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. KNOW that most of you are too busy doing holiday stuff to worry about your garden, but there are a few things that can still be done in your yard if you need to get away from the holiday chaos for a while. » You can still clean. As things die back, you can remove the stalks and get up the leaf debris. » You can still weed. Lord knows the weeds never stop growing! If you can keep the weeds from getting a head start this winter, you will be a happier person next spring. » You can still plant. Our ground seldom freezes, so you can continue to plant most trees and shrubs all winter long. There are a few that won’t like it, however, so give us a call or stop by if you have questions. » If you need more excuses to go outside this month, tell everyone that you are going out to collect Christmas decorations! Those of you with older, established lawns probably have a plethora of plants to choose from. Boxwoods, hollies, magnolias, and nandinas have great foliage to mix with the typical fir and cypress greenery. Winterberry hollies, nandinas, and beautyberries can add a

splash of color with their berries. Re m e mb e r t h at you are pruning your shrubs when you take those cuttings, so don’t go overboard! After you have taken your cuttings, use pliers to crush the ends of the stems and then give them a nice long soak. Overnight is best and will help them last for several weeks. There are also other things that you can use for décor. Hydrangea blooms, seed pods, and pine cones are great either natural or spray painted. » Keep your feeders full and clean, and keep your wintersafe birdbaths full and clean. Metal and plastic birdbaths can stay out year-round, and we have heaters for really cold nights. Now let’s move on to holiday plants and their care. » Amaryllis bulbs are frequently given as gifts, and the flowers are stunning. Their care is fairly simple: Put the bulb in a sturdy pot and leave 1/3

of the bulb above the soil. Put them in a sunny area, and don’t overwater them. Once the bloom stalk goes up, you may need to stake it to keep it stable. Rotate the pot every few days to keep it from leaning, and cut the stalk back after the flowers fall off and it turns yellow. It will send out leaves, and you can basically treat it as a houseplant. Trying to get them to re-bloom “on time” is a chore that starts in late September, so call us next year if you are interested. » The Christmas cactus can live for decades if given proper care. They are a tropical cactus, however, and do not like hot afternoon sun or being allowed to dry out completely. If they dry out after they have set buds, they will throw all their buds off and refuse to bloom. Once it finishes blooming, you can cut back on the water a bit and let it rest. Resume regular watering and fertilizing in the spring. They enjoy living outside in the summer in a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. Re-blooming is determined by daylight hours and temperature, so call for instructions in October. » Now let’s talk about the Christmas Diva: The poinsettia. It is beautiful, but it is picky, delicate, and frequently misunderstood. It is a tropical plant that someone decided would be perfect for a winter holiday. Not a good combination. When I say it is tropical, I mean it does not like cold AT ALL. More than a minute of exposure to freezing temps will turn it black. It is also very fragile, and the branches will break off easily. Here is my advice: 1. Buy from a grower, not a box store or a grocery chain. They have no idea how to take care of poinsettias, and you are usually buying a plant that is doomed. 2. Don’t buy one that is already wrapped. Plastic sleeves are a fungal breeding ground and camouflage damage. It should be wrapped for transportation, however. Just pull that plastic sleeve down or cut it off when you get home. 3. Don’t expose it to cold air. No vents, no open doors, and no sitting it outside unless the temperature is above 50 degrees. 4. Water it in the sink with the foil wrap removed, and let it drain. Then put it back in the foil. Don’t let it stand in water or it will get root rot. about my messy home. My husband, John, agreed with me and mentioned a couple of out-ofcontrol areas. He knew I had my work cut out for me. As I stood there doing the dishes a few moments later, I was feeling blessed and thankful that my husband is so understanding. I was also feeling a little guilty, because I have done more than my share of playing this week. John left for work and my 14-year-old son remarked in a conspiratorial whisper that he “couldn’t believe how upset dad was!” What? How could we have interpreted that moment so differently? Rewind a few years... In 2012, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. After a botched surgery, I was left without a voice for seven long months. I became desperate and depressed. In January 2013, some friends prayed my voice would be restored, and that very day, I received an

amazing gift. I went from a barely audible whisper to regaining about 75% of my voice. I can now talk to my family and friends and on the phone, although I am unable to sing or be heard in noisy settings. If I had simply lost 25% of my voice, I’d likely be frustrated, but having come from nothing to 75% has given me a new perspective, and I am so grateful. When we began the Surface Doc company in 2008, the economy was in a recession. Those first few months we nearly starved as we waited for the phone to ring. We had several friends who blessed us with meals and even a grocery gift card. We were in dire circumstances! One of our first clients was a pizzeria who paid in pizza trade. We ate pizza for a solid week – breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The kids loved that week, and we were so thankful to be able to put “food” on the table. We came through that challenging season feeling loved as we were ministered to by friends and family.

Christmas is a season where we are particularly mindful of our blessings. As I reminisce over the last decade or so, it is obvious that the seasons of great personal growth took place during particularly difficult experiences. I am reminded that the Lord CAN change any situation we find ourselves in. But, when the circumstances don’t change, our perspective has an opportunity for growth. My desire this season is to do a better job looking to Him instead of my circumstances. Perhaps this is the cry of your heart as well. Wherever we find ourselves, God’s grace is sufficient to carry us. It is our heartfelt prayer that each of us feels the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and His blessings that surround us. Glenmore Mansion 1280 N Chucky Pike, Jefferson City The 1868 Victorian treasure in Jefferson City will host its annual Christmas tours the first two weekends in December (December 3-4 and 9-10). On each date, Glenmore Mansion is open for afternoon tours from 1 to 5:00 pm. It re-opens for candlelight tours from 7 to 9 pm each evening. Glenmore will be decorated inside and outside with seasonal greenery and 12 lighted trees. At the end of the tour, Glenmore Wassail and homemade goodies are served to each guest in the beautiful Victorian dining room. Visitors follow a self-paced route throughout the 10 rooms of the mansion. Docents are available in each room to provide information that is unique to each room. Creative Arts Help Veterans Reclaim Their Voice A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

was her first love, her passion, and her whole identity. “Once a singer, always a singer,” she often says. That was true even after she joined the U.S. Navy in 1985. But what happened next forever changed Walker’s perspective on what it means to have a voice. When she was 26, Walker knew she had a calling to serve and protect her country and its ideals. She served as a naval airman and sang cadence in boot camp while training to work on helicopters. During boot camp, she developed a throat condition and lost her voice. When Walker was medically discharged, she was devastated. On top of that, Walker’s illness worsened, and she was later admitted to a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital, where she would meet a therapist who helped change her life. One day I met Jessie,” Walker recalled. “She played the piano and would encourage patients to sing along with her. She kept at me, until I gave in and sang ‘Summertime’ by Ella Fitzgerald. In that moment, I found my voice again.” 52

Once Walker began singing again, it was clear she still had talent. So much so that years later, she would become a five-time finalist at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF), which is open to veterans who participate in their local VA hospital’s creative arts therapy programs. Veterans can submit their work in the categories of performing arts, creative writing, and visual arts through their therapists for a chance to be selected for the NVCAF. Once selected, veterans from around the country join together for the week-long event with creative workshops, an art exhibit, meetand-greet, and a live stage show to display their talents. Today Walker volunteers at her local VA hospital to help others find their voice, in addition to traveling on tour and singing commercial jingles. Her story is not that different from many other veterans involved in art therapy programs, which help veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. Creative arts gives them an outlet to express themselves through various forms of art. Often this form of therapy is the lifesaving tool veterans need for rehabilitation.

The NVCAF is co-presented by the VA and the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization and one of the nation’s most prominent advocates for veterans’ needs. For 17 years, the ALA has partnered with the VA to co-present the festival to celebrate veterans and their talents. Thanks to volunteers from across the country, the ALA assists veterans with art projects and their travel to the NVCAF, assembles displays, and supports publicity, production, and materials development during the weeklong event. Many of the volunteers from ALA units make it a yearly commitment to donate their time to support this program. Sharon Neville helped host the NVCAF in her home state of North Carolina in 2014 and has volunteered at the event multiple times since then. “This experience is unlike any other,” said Neville, who began volunteering in 2013. “This festival is life-changing for all who attend, not just the participants. It’s a way for the public to understand a veteran’s journey, appreciate it, and celebrate it. It’s a story that many of us will never know, but we should start listening.”

Toys alleviate the temptation to damage household items and reduce stress, helping to prevent behavioral problems. Safety in toy selection should be your top priority. In selecting the best toy for your dog, dimensions are important. If it’s too big, your dog will have trouble holding it in their mouth and paws. If it’s too small, the toy may become a choking hazard. Next, consider the materials and construction of the toy. If your dog is one to cuddle his toys, a stuffed toy may be the perfect complement to their personality. If your dog likes to roughhouse, look for durable materials that will stand up to their rough-and-tumble playing. Keep in mind that all dogs are different. Perhaps the time is drawing near to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) at your age 70 1 / 2 , and Yvonne Marsh, you’re faced with the higher tax CFP®, CPA bill this creates. Unfortunately, your higher income can also force you into paying more for Medicare Part B & Part D premiums, plus subject more of your Social Security benefits to taxation. Here are a few tax tips to soften the impact of your RMDs: » For charitable giving, have a portion of your RMD paid directly to the charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. That amount is then excluded from your adjusted gross income. This is especially beneficial for retirees who do not itemize and receive no tax benefit for their charitable giving. » In the last couple of years, the Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC) has been introduced into the marketplace. By segregating up to 25% of your IRA (up to $125,000 per person) into a QLAC, the IRS allows you to exclude that amount from your annual RMD calculation. RMDs aren’t required to begin on these funds until age 85. A few other IRA tax-savings tips: » Consider defusing the RMD tax time-bomb with a multi-year strategy of Roth conversions. Each year convert a portion of your IRA to a Roth, being mindful to not push yourself into the next tax bracket. » Review your IRA beneficiary forms to ensure that both primary and contingent natural persons are named to preserve Stretch IRA tax rules for heirs. » In 2015, the IRS issued a ruling that specifically allows the after-tax portion of a 401(k) to be rolled into a tax-free Roth IRA. This is a game changer for people who have too much income to contribute directly to a Roth IRA. And self-employed people can set up an individual Roth 401(k) plan and add up to $53,000 ($59,000 if you are over age 50) each year. If you look ahead into the next 20-30 years of retirement and believe that tax rates will be higher in the future than they are now, it pays to create a tax strategy today. Uncle Sam is a co-owner of your IRA – it’s up to you to decide how much he gets to keep.

know... every year just seems to fly by, and we find ourselves at the end of yet another year. I hope it has been a good year for you. I hope, despite the challenges that you have faced, that you can remember times where others showed you love and kindness and support. May 2018 be even better. I want to end the year with a reminder to all of us parents that “it’s not a race.” What I mean by this is that we are not racing towards some unseen finish line when it comes to raising our children. For some reason, we tend to feel like we are under some time constraint that tells us we have to make sure our children have shed all of

their bad habits and have acquired every single lovely character trait that there is all before they turn 18. Right! Well, I have news for you… wrong! Parents, may I remind you to take a look in the mirror. Are you still working on shedding bad habits? Are you still trying to become more patient, less judgmental, more forgiving, less selfish, etc.? Of course we are, and we always will be. We must remember that it takes a lifetime, and even that’s not long enough, to work on becoming better. Too often parents can exasperate their children when trying to fix every little weakness and character flaw that their children exhibit. It’s not that we need to not care or quit trying to teach; however, we do need to be careful and understand that

sometimes it takes a lifetime to finally shed a bad habit. May we not expect perfection. May we celebrate the small steps of progress that our children make. May we not focus too much time on the personal flaws of our children, but celebrate their unique gifts and talents and personality. Be patient mom and dad. Trying to be good and act good is hard work. May we remember that. Happy holidays!

“Elf: The Musical Jr.” A live musical play based on the 2003 New Line Cinema film

with The Ritchie Company, will present “Elf: The Musical Jr.” The play will be performed December 1-17, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. Also, a special 7 pm performance will be held on Sunday, December 10th. This hilarious musical play is based on the 2003 comedy film. Buddy Hobbs, a young orphan child, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Years later Buddy finds out that he’s an ordinary human being and heads off to New York City in search of his father, Walter Hobbs. But Walter, like many New Yorkers, doesn’t believe in Santa Claus. Neither dies Buddy’s brother, Michael! Buddy must win over his birth family and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas.

The play is performed by 27 talented young actors from ages 8 to 17. Simeon Thress plays Buddy, and Keegan Stump plays Walter. Jacob Sousley plays Santa, and Logan Bell plays Michael Hobbs. Eight actors are making their KCT debuts: Hannah Beth Bibee, Austin Bishop, Jake Borden, Abby Cowan, Sarah Grace Faught, Dale Gross, Miley Jenkins, and Jackson Lelle. F YOU’RE INTO rock music at all,

you’ve had to have heard Three Dog Night. If you’re a baby boomer, you for sure have. Songs like Joy to the World, Easy to Be Hard, Never Been to Spain, One, and many other songs by the band dominated the airwaves of the ‘70s and reportedly enjoyed 40 million in LP sales. Though a trio, the voice of Three Dog Night is often attributed to Chuck Negron. By the time the band disbanded in 1976, Negron had a very serious drug problem. In 1999, he chronicled his story in his autobiography, Three Dog Nightmare, which is being released this month in a revised version. It was about that book that Chuck and I talked by phone. I started off by mentioning to him that, from reading his book, it truly is a miracle that he is still alive. I asked him about that. “Yeah, well, I guess there’s a bigger plan for me. Ha! Ha! The book has become part of a program of many rehabs across America, and I’ve ended up speaking. Several months ago I spoke in Kansas for many judges, probation officers, and incarcerated men about addictions. It seems that I’m helping a lot of people understand addiction. It seems to be a

greater purpose for me.” Negron has been clean for quite a few years now, but I just had to ask if there’s any temptation still to go back to using. “That’s been a blessing to me,” he said. “I’m 26 years clean and sober, and I have not had the obsession to use – EVER – with my recovery. It’s been removed, and the miracle of that is that was my burden. I couldn’t get sober because the obsession was with me every minute. I couldn’t shake it. So it was a real blessing when it was removed.” At 75, Negron’s voice is still remarkably similar to its heyday quality. I asked him what he attributes that to. “It’s kind of you to say so,” he said. “I think a lot has to do with genetics and has much to do with preparation and work. I think for a singer, you have to sing. You have to work on your voice – especially as you get older. You have to train. You have to have strong muscles. The breathing. The stomach in good shape. It’s a muscle that breathes. There’s a lot to do. I take voice. I never took voice in my whole life, and I’ve taken it the last 15 years. I started taking voice to learn as much as I can to keep myself viable and learn, and I still am. Plus, I love to sing. It’s my – excuse the

saying – but it’s my voice. It’s how I express myself – the very free part of me. I love it! I love to sing!” I had to ask if Three Dog Night was going to reunite. “Nah, it’s not going to happen,” said Negron. “There was a time when Cory and Jimmy were alive that it could work – especially if we get Floyd Sneed back involved, because Floyd still plays and is a good drummer and a great guy. There was a time that was something I would’ve enjoyed. But once Cory and Jimmy died, there was no reason to do anything. It was me, Danny, Michael, and maybe Floyd. Besides all the genius that was the band and musicians, what made the name Three Dog Night special in my mind was three-part harmony. How can you do threepart harmony with two guys? So, it’s over. There’s no reason. That was my reason – to hear that beautiful sound; that powerful, guttural sound. It can’t be done. It would just be an interference in my life at this point that I don’t need.” When asked how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy is, he jokingly said, “Well, it’s probably too late to be remembered as a nice guy. Ha! Ha!” He then said that he wanted to be remembered as “someone who helped a lot of people. Alliance proudly presents its 2017 Members Show, the largest annual exhibition of local artists in the Greater Knoxville area. The fresh mix of two- and three-dimensional works created within the last two years encompasses a wide variety of media such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, photography, fine craft, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, and more from regional artists who are all individual members of the Arts & Culture Alliance, which serves and supports a diverse community of artists, arts organizations, and cultural institutions. Most of the works in the 2017 Members Show are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on December 1 from 5 to 9 pm with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and sweets. The WIVK Santa Claus Parade starts at 7 pm along Gay Street and passes right by the Emporium. “The annual Members Show is a perfect way to round out a year of diverse programming at the Emporium,” said Liza Zenni, Executive Director for the Arts & Culture Alliance. “We’re excited to see what so many local artists have been working on throughout the year.” Individual members of the Alliance participate locally and regionally in gallery exhibitions, art festivals, sculpture trails, weekend shows, studio tours, and public murals. Some of the members are full-time artists, while others have day jobs and create on evenings and weekends. Some Alliance members include art professors with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Carson-Newman University, Maryville College, Pellissippi State, Roane State, and Walters State. Others are teachers within Knox and surrounding county’s elementary, middle, and high schools. Some Alliance members teach classes privately or through community classes with the Fountain City

to-do list always seems to get longer, not shorter. But it’s okay when he’s doing what he loves. Cantrill is principal of Blue Grass Elementary, one of seven Knox County schools selected for Tennessee’s 2017 Reward Schools, which are the top 5% of schools for academic achievement and the top 5% for student growth. “Being a Reward School means the hard work we put in each and every day is preparing our students for the future – being college – and career-ready,” said Cantrill. “It means that we are moving in the right direction, and I could not be more proud of our students, teachers, and staff.” Cantrill has worked in education for 20 years. Eight of those have been in administration, with five at Blue Grass. “I was influenced by a lot of great teachers in my life,” he said. “I wanted to be a role model for students the way my teachers 64

were for me. I enjoy working with children and helping them to achieve their goals. It is rewarding to watch my students grow and take pride in what they have accomplished.” Cantrill has a bachelor’s degree from Berea College and a master’s from Eastern Kentucky University. He begins each day greeting students as they arrive at school, followed by an administration meeting or parent meetings. The rest of his day is usually spent visiting classrooms to support teachers and ensure high-quality instruction, conducting walk-throughs and evaluations, planning for upcoming events and professional development, being visible in the halls, and being present for dismissal. He also often has to address another 100 issues not anticipated or on his to-do-list. He describes it all as just

Cantrill says the biggest challenges of his job involve funding ever-changing technology, implementing new standards, and finding time in the day to fit everything in.
