Natural Hormone Replacement

e n o e h t r o f t i Do

You Love ! Why Natural or Bioidentical Hormone Replacement?

This refers to hormones that are identical in nature to those naturally produced by the body. Levels can be checked when these hormones are used, but when synthetic hormones are used, levels can’t be checked because they have a different molecular structure than what the body makes naturally.

What’s wrong with all those TV Ads?

Life isn’t just about Testosterone. That’s what all these ads push. Sex sells, but if you aren’t healthy, it won’t last. Allow your body to heal itself, age gracefully, and everything else will follow.

Why isn’t it just about Testosterone?

Who wants to live a long life if you aren’t healthy? If you aren’t sleeping, have no energy, affected by memory fog and are working out without any results, then Natural HRT is for you. It is for men and women. It isn’t just for hot flashes either— aging should be about being healthy and reducing risk for disease and living life to its fullest.

See us for your Five Steps to Regenerative Health.

• Natural Hormone Replacement: Have your hormone levels checked and we will return them to an optimal level. We use a local compounding pharmacy to individually

adjust your hormone replacement medications. • Supplements: Taking the right supplements allows your body to utilize the hormones you are taking, gives you energy and allows your body to reduce inflammation and aging. • Diet and Exercise: What fuels are you putting in your body that are weighing you down? We will go through the dietary changes to make. • Toxins: Exposures to pesticides, plastics and other harmful substances affect our daily bodily functions. If it goes on your skin, in your body, or you breathe it in, then you have to detoxify it and eliminate it from your body. • Mind, Body, Spirit: Sleeping, being happy, and de-stressing is integral to any regenerative health program.

Winter Relief at Spa 9700

Winter takes its toll on us in many ways. Whether you experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), come down with a case of the flu, or deal with dry, itchy skin as a result of the cold air outside coupled with heated air indoors, you just might be out of ways to effectively “cope.” At Spa 9700, we are ready to do our part to help you make it to dogwood time.

assage and other ther-

apeutic body treatments have been proven to improve not only our physical well being, but our state of mind as well. Each of Spa 9700’s massage therapists have a minimum of 10 years of experience, and we offer custom full body massage, deep tissue massage, and hot stone massage. The relaxed, private, and quiet treatment rooms set the stage for complete and total renewal.

St. Tropez Sunless Tan

Maybe you want to try one of the body treatments available such as the beautiful St. Tropez Sunless Tan or the aloe vera-based Inch Loss Wrap. Both of these treatments offer a relaxing one-hour therapy with results you can actually see! All of our body treatments are designed to exfoliate dead skin and provide intense hydration. During February we are featuring our Cherry Rose Truffle Facial for both men and women ($70) and our Kissable Lip Treatment as an addition to that facial for only $15. Both the facial and the lip therapy continue our concentration on re-hydrating “winter skin,” and they apply to all skin types, because even oily skin can be dehydrated. So you have a strong case of cabin fever, but Spa 9700 has a solution. Call and schedule your appointment at 865-357-7721.

bleed outside the lines of my lips?

A: Try this: Prep your lips with Lip Conditioner or

Lip Revive, then outline your lips with a lip liner. Follow with your favorite lip color. Another tip is to fill the entire lip with lip liner, then apply lip color over it. These steps should help you lock in the lip color.

Q: What is the advantage of using a lip pencil? A: Two products in one! Lip Pencil Plus has a lip

liner on one end and a lip color on the opposite end. Using the lip liner allows you to control feathering, and the final lip color gives a semi-matte finish.

Q: What is lip polish? A: Our lip polish is a creamy gloss that delivers high shine with hydrating benefits. Applied with a brush applicator, it glides on smoothly, is long wearing, soft, and velvety, and has a delicious, subtle scent of vanilla. We love it! Come in and try before you buy! Susan Dodd MD PLLC

Focused on providing the best in women’s healthcare here is perhaps no healthcare relationship that is as important to a woman as the one she has with her gynecologist. This is the doctor she will visit, well or sick, at least once a year. This is the doctor who will play a key role in her health throughout her life, ranging from annual exams, to treatment of a variety of disorders, to menopausal counseling. This is the doctor with whom she may discuss her most intimate concerns. This month we’re pleased to feature Dr. Susan Dodd, a native of Sevier County who has practiced obstetrics and gynecology since 1987 and who now focuses exclusively on gynecology. Dr. Dodd is a highly accomplished physician, professor, and community volunteer with a true passion for her profession: providing quality and personalized women’s care in a welcoming environment. It’s no surprise she’s been recognized as a “Top Doc” in Cityview magazine annually since 2002, as a YWCA Tribute to Women human services honoree, and as a Girl Scout Woman of Achievement, among other honors.

Dr. Susan Dodd provides gynecological services and enjoys surgical privileges at UT Medical Center, Tennova, and Parkwest.

The power of listening

One of the things for which Susan Dodd is most known – and appreciated – is her gracious bedside manner. She’s a natural listener who puts her patients at ease as they share their concerns. Dr. Dodd is incredibly thorough while being very easy to talk to and is known by patients and colleagues alike for her down-to-earth approach.

It’s not a job – it’s a passion

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” is a quote that has been attributed to Confucius and perfectly describes Dr. Susan Dodd. For her, gynecology is not a job – it’s a passion. She truly enjoys practicing medicine and helping her patients lead healthy lives, and it shows. Photographs by D. Roberts Photography

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2013

The latest in medical knowledge and treatments

Along with her noteworthy patient focus and bedside manner, Dr. Dodd stays abreast of all current recommendations on the full range of women’s health testing, and she explains potentially intimidating medical information in terms her patients can understand. In addition to board certifications from the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Dr. Dodd is a published author of papers on numerous women’s health topics in medical journals.

Teaching and mentoring young physicians

As an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Medical Center since 1987 and also as a clinical assistant professor at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, Dr. Dodd stays on the leading edge of medical knowledge and treatments. Among her many recognitions, one of which she is most proud is being honored with the chief Residents Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Tennessee Research Memorial Hospital.

Convenient surgical privileges at multiple hospitals

Dr. Dodd’s new office is located on Parkwest Boulevard in West Knoxville, but she enjoys surgical privileges at UT Medical Center, Parkwest Hospital, and Tennova. This gives her patients a full range of options regarding hospital care should they need surgical treatment.

Best known as a doctor who truly listens, Dr. Dodd is patient-focused and caring.

Accepting new patients

When practicing obstetrics in addition to gynecology, Dr. Dodd had a full patient list and was not accepting new patients. With her current focus exclusively on gynecology, Dr. Dodd is now accepting new patients for the first time in years and welcomes your transfer to her practice. Most insurance providers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, and United Healthcare, are accepted. More information, including a records transfer form, is available at www.susandoddmd.com or by calling 865-690-7677.

Knoxville-based sculptor Daniel Lai is ArtXtravaganza’s featured artist. Lai has been recognized for his innovative art pieces. His works have been published in books and magazines and have earned awards both nationally and internationally. He is represented by Aurora Photos in Portland, ME, Glasshouse Images in New York City, NY, 16 Patton Gallery in Asheville, NC, and G&G Interiors in Knoxville, TN. ArtXtravaganza is one of the premier art shows in the Southeast and has played a major role in establishing Knoxville as a community aligned with the arts and furthering the careers of prominent artists. Echoing Webb School’s staunch commitment to excellence in the arts, proceeds from ArtXtravaganza not only support Webb’s visual and performing arts program, but also the arts at Mooreland Heights Elementary School, an arts-integrated public school supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission. ArtXtravaganza’s partnership with Mooreland Heights broadens Webb’s tradition of fostering community by enhancing lives through art education and appreciation – a tradition that’s not isolated to just the Webb community, according to ArtXtravaganza chair, Danielle Nutt. “We as a school recognize that we’re part of something bigger,” she said. “With ArtXtravaganza, we have the opportunity to support the arts in the community at large.” Doors to ArtXtravaganza open at 1 pm on Friday, March 8. The art sale continues Saturday, March 9, from 10 am to 6:30 pm and Sunday, March 10, from 11 am to 4 pm. For more information, call 865-2913846 or visit www.artxtravaganza.org.

Bad Money Habits to Break in 2013 Behaviors worth changing for the New Year Presented by Ali Swofford Do bad money habits constrain your financial progress? Many people fall into the same financial behavior patterns year after year. This is a good time to alter your behavior.

#1: Lending money to family and friends.

You may know someone who has lent a few thousand dollars to a relative. Personal loans can easily transform into personal financial losses. If you must loan money, charge interest and set a repayment plan with deadlines. #2: Spending more than you make. A 2012 Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances calculated that just 52% of American households earn more money than they spend.1 #3: Saving little or nothing. Good savers build emergency funds, have money to invest and compound, and leave the stress of living paycheckto-paycheck behind. A CreditDonkey.com survey of 1,105 households last fall found that 41% of respondents had less than $500 in savings. In another disturbing detail, 54% of the respondents had no savings strategy.2 #4: Living without a budget. In calculating a budget, you may find opportunities for savings and detect wasteful spending. #5: Frivolous spending. Advertisers can make us feel as if we have sudden needs that can only be met via the purchase of a product. Think twice before spending impulsively. #6: Not using cash often enough. The world runs on credit, but that doesn’t mean your household should. Pay with cash as often as your budget allows. #7: Gambling. There are many glamorous ways to lose money while having “fun.” The bottom line: losing money is not fun. If an addiction has overruled your willpower, seek help. #8: Inadequate financial literacy. Great readable and even entertaining websites filled with useful financial information abound. Reading an article per day on these websites could help you greatly increase your financial understanding.

#9: Not contributing to IRAs or workplace retirement plans. 401(k)s, Traditional

and Roth IRAs offer remarkable wealth-building opportunities. Contributing early in life, and to the maximum, results in more compounding of the invested assets you may potentially realize. #10: DIY retirement planning. Those who plan for retirement without the help of professionals leave themselves open to emotional investing mistakes and tax and estate planning oversights. Many vastly underestimate the amount of money needed for the future. Instead of flirting with trial and error, see a professional for insight.

many forms. The food that we eat is the most obvious form, but some examples of other forms are TV, movies, music, art, and books. Basically, food is anything that we take in via our five senses. The same analogy applies to relationships, which can also come in many forms. A relationship is defined as “the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected or behave toward each other.” The question arises, “What is our relationship with food?” It seems rhetorical, but it’s a good question nonetheless. Oftentimes we do not understand how we really relate to food. How we feel when we eat certain foods is a mystery to most of us. Ultimately, eating for our health requires a good relationship to food. Since we are all different with different backgrounds, genetic differences, different blood types, and different activity levels, having a good relationship with food is individualized. February is the month of relationships - a great time to evaluate our relationship to food. Take gluten for example. Gluten is a protein that comes from wheat, barley, oats, spelt, rye, and kamut. Gluten is also included in many processed foods such as ketchup, soy sauce, processed meats, pasta, crackers, cakes, soups, candy, MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, thickeners, and instant coffee. Determining how we feel when we eat gluten is important to discover. Gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance is a problem that many people have and actually go undiagnosed. Yet studies show that approximately 60% of Americans have serological markers for gluten. These markers produce antibodies, which create an autoimmune response that leads to inflammation. Also, gluten can produce alterations

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2013

in the villi of the intestines (leaky gut), which allow larger undigested gluten protein to enter into the blood stream. When this happens, the body sees this as a foreign invader and will form antibodies for attack. The problem is that part of the molecular structure for gluten is similar to the molecular structure of our thyroid, and unfortunately, these antibodies will attack our own tissue, which has been tagged by the immune system. This process is called molecular mimicry, and the disease that is produced from this process is called Hashimoto. Hashimoto has been identified as the number one cause of hypothyroidism in the world. Clinically, testing for thyroid antibodies has been shown to determine whether Hashimoto is present. Symptoms usually associated with Hashimoto can include fatigue, weight gain, despite altering to a lowcalorie diet, morning headaches, depression, constipation, hypersensitivity to cold, numbness in hands, muscle cramps at rest, itchy/dry skin, dry/brittle hair, myxedema (facial swelling), insomnia, heart palpitations, and night sweats to name a few. A relationship to our food is important. With so many “diets” to consider, individualized decisions are important for maintaining our health, vitality, and youthfulness. Determining what this relationship should be is as individualized as we are. February is a great time to reflect on our relationships, and food is no exception. Hearing with Your Heart

A

s we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, think back to the times that we exchanged Valentine greetings with our young friends at school, the neighborhood kids, and our brothers and sisters. And think back to how even the simplest, handmade Valentines melted the hearts of our mom and dad who teared at the almost Joe unrecognizable signature penned in crayon. As a dad, I’ve cherished those Valentine moments with my children and look forward to many more Valentine’s Days to come. Perhaps these opportunities are even more special to me because of a hearing disability I’ve had since early childhood. Put another way, I can’t imagine a Valentine’s Day hug from my little girl without hearing her utter “I love you daddy.”

Left untreated, hearing loss not only worsens, but it can actually lead to the deterioration in speech for the hearing disable. Fortunately, my parents recognized my disability at a young age. With the help of hearing aids I’ve been able to live a full and producSimpson tive life. More importantly, I’ve been able to experience the joy of fatherhood. As owner of multiple Audibel Hearing Aid Centers throughout the area, I have been blessed to help hundreds of people just like myself rediscover the gift of hearing. Sadly, however, many hearing disabilities go undiagnosed or, worse yet, untreated. Left untreated, hearing loss not only worsens, but it can actually lead to the deterioration in speech for the hearing disable. And this

same condition can lead to the isolation of the victim and their loved ones. If you or someone you love has a hearing loss, why not give them the greatest gift that you, or they, have ever received: the gift of hearing. For a no-cost, no-obligation evaluation, call me today. Rediscover the gift of hearing with your heart. – Joe

Cost of Prescriptions and Doctor Visits Double in a Decade

A

cc o r d i n g t o

a new report from the International Federation of Health Plans, Americans can spend up to $265 for a typical family practice visit, which may exclude the costs of needed testing. Another report from the Department of Health and Human Services shows that the costs of prescriptions and doctor visits have doubled in one 10-year period. With rising health care costs, and despite the recent federal health care law called the Affordable Care Act, tens of millions of Americans still find themselves uninsured or underinsured. Sadly, many people forgo important preventative screenings and examinations that might prevent more serious and even life threatening illnesses in the future – illnesses that could potentially bankrupt an individual or a family. Thanks to a growing number of initiatives from a variety of innovative and forwardthinking health care professionals, however, there are some exciting options that offer families reliable, affordable health care alternatives. One such program, a first in Knoxville, offers individuals and families an innovative new option for family medicine and primary care. Called Southeast Retained Medical, its Medical Membership Plan is specifically designed for uninsured and underinsured individuals, families, and small businesses. Members of Southeast Retained Medical, who pay a low monthly fee often far less than most insurance plans, have access to five area primary care locations, one of which provides an extended hour, urgent care, walk-in facility. Primary and preventative care available include:

Keeping Your Skin Looking Youthful Most physicians have spe-

cific areas of expertise that they commit their careers to. As a board certified dermatologist, I focus on diseases and surgery of the skin in adult and pediatric patients as well as cosmetic dermatology. The additional training I pursued in earning dual board certification in both dermatology and dermatopathology allows me to better diagnose and treat my patients. I also have a strong interest in cosmetic dermatology, which, when combined with my artistic background, helps me improve my patients’ appearance and self-confidence. This is why I am so proud to introduce the clinically-proven Clear + Brilliant laser treatment system that can help you simply, effectively, and affordably prevent the visible signs of aging. Just one 10 to 20 minute Clear + Brilliant session can leave your skin feeling smoother, younger, and give you that “radiant glow” that comes from healthy, youthful skin. A series of treatments delivers the lasting results that can keep you looking younger for years to come. In clinical studies, Clear + Brilliant delivered measurable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and helped rejuvenate skin tone and texture. Unlike other laser or surgical procedures, there is minimal to no down time with Clear + Brilliant. Oral surgery So Where’s that’s worth the Wisdom in smiling about! Wisdom Teeth? Have you ever wondered where wisdom teeth got their name? This third set of molars is the rear most teeth of your top and bottom jaw. They typically arrive between ages 14 and 18 – “the age of wisdom.”

B

ut

here’s

where “wisdom” departs from our conversation. Because our wisdom teeth arrive last, there’s often too little jaw remaining to accommodate these additional teeth. With insufficient space to erupt normally, our new molars often partially erupt or remain impacted altogether, which can result in a myriad of problems, including: • Crowding of existing teeth • Trapped food debris, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and infection • The formation of cysts that can damage healthy roots of adjacent teeth, the jawbone, and nerves Annual oral examinations are your best defense against problematic wisdom teeth. Should they require removal, your family dentist will recommend an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, a specialist who will safely remove these teeth with a minimal amount of discomfort. As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with more than three decades of experience, I and my staff of compassionate and caring associates have helped countless numbers of people overcome the potential problems associated with partially or fully impacted wisdom teeth. Also, let me state that the cure is typically much easier than the stories you may have heard from others. In fact, you should not experience any downtime, and

the minimal discomfort that may result can be managed with a prescription medication. The procedure is performed on an out-patient basis. Many patients elect to have their wisdom teeth removed on a Friday and return to work or other routine on Monday. Prior to surgery, you’ll receive a mild local anesthesia. The procedure commonly requires one hour to complete. You may spend a brief amount of time in recovery before going home, and you’ll need a companion to drive you home. Once at home, you may notice light bleeding that will require you to bit down on gauze pads for 30 to 45 minutes. You may also experience swelling and slight skin discoloration that will disappear after a few days. You may also be prescribed a medication that will alleviate any discomfort you may experience. The fact is that most patients are pleasantly surprised by their experience, which is typically far less traumatic than the experience of others who may have exaggerated their actual experience. Sort of like the people we knew that walked two miles to school each day, uphill in each direction. If you would like to learn more, or to make an appointment, please call our office, where we put the “wisdom” back into “wisdom teeth.”

Do Something Nice for Your Skin This Valentine’s If you think your dry skin and scalp are the result of the winter season, think again. True, your dry skin condition may worsen during the winter months, but it’s likely the real culprit is something else altogether. The real answer? Your water. That’s right, the water you wash and bathe in. “I’ve had skin issues since I was in junior high school in the early 70s,” says F. Arnett of Knoxville. “I can’t tell you how many thousands of dollars I’ve spent on sprays and creams throughout the years. The Kinetico water treatment system from Aqua Clear Water Systems has had a dramatic effect on my skin. I don’t have to Krista Brewster use these prescription products anymore. It’s amazing. My wife’s skin is silky smooth again, and she loves the way it makes her hair feel. I highly recommend your system and your company.” Impurities in tap water, including chlorine, solids, trace hazardous chemicals, and other contaminants, not only remain on the surface of your skin after washing and bathing, but can be absorbed by your skin as well, leading to the dry skin and scalp conditions that many Americans face. Removal of these impurities, which can be done affordably with one of the many water treatments systems available from Aqua Clear Water Systems, often reduces or eliminates the dry skin conditions that so many of us face. “Both my husband and I have always had to use lotions for ongoing skin issues,” stated B. McConnell of Knoxville. “It simply has been a way of life for us. However, since we purchased our Kinetico water treatment system, the difference has been remarkable. Our skin and hair feel much better, and we don’t have the rough and sticky feeling we had become so accustomed to from bathing in lotion.” If you or a family member suffer from any skin or scalp conditions and are ready to eliminate what’s likely the source of these conditions, then I encourage you to call me today and discover for yourself the difference that an Aqua Clear Water System can make to your family. Healthy, radiant skin is only the beginning. You’ll also enjoy healthy drinking water, cleaner clothes, bath, and shower, and spot-free dishes. Why not do something real special for you and your family for Valentine’s and give the gift of health? Be a Sweetheart This Valentine’s Day

Hubbard went to the cupboard only to discover the cupboard was bare. To help everyone have a meal, Mast General Store is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee to raise hunger awareness in Knoxville with the tenth annual Be a Sweetheart...Feed the Hungry event on February 9th and 10th. With Valentine’s Day upon us, many people in Knoxville will be thinking about their sweethearts and loved ones and trying to decide what gift will convey their feelings in a tangible way. Candy is one of the holiday’s traditional gifts, and on Be a Sweetheart weekend, it can show others that you care, too. This year, Mast Store will contribute $1 for each pound of candy purchased on February 9th and 10th to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. Fred Martin, President of the Mast General Store, commented, “Our Be a Sweetheart… Feed the Hungry event has helped provide food to the food banks serving our local communities at a time when donations are at a lower level. After the holidays, donations tend to wane, and in these challenging economic times, we need to help our neighbors whenever we can.” Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee is very good at stretching their donation dollars. For each $1 the organization receives, three nutritious meals are provided for someone who is hungry. Hunger is not discriminatory and is not just an issue within the homeless community. According

to FeedingAmerica.org, “90% of hunger relief recipients are gainfully employed.” People are making hard choices – food or heat; food or the mortgage payment; food or prescription drugs; food or getting the car repaired. “Food is as basic as necessity as breathing,” expresses Mike Akers, a Second Harvest donor. “Until basic needs are met, real growth and change is not possible. I believe Second Harvest does amazing work and is changing lives one meal at a time.” Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee helps more than 200,000 people annually through eight programs. At an

Lifestyle

impressive 94% efficiency rate, they supply hunger-relief missions for more than 500 non-profits in our region. Second Harvest’s partner agencies reported a 77% increase in demand in 2012. Despite this tremendous challenge, each dollar donated to Second Harvest provides three meals. It’s proof positive that even a small donation can be turned into a lot of food for our neighbors. Like many non-profit organizations, Second Harvest of East Tennessee relies on volunteers and donations for much of its success. There are many opportunities to get involved on a personal or group level as well as learning how you can fight hunger in your community. For more information, visit http://secondharvestetn.org.

Called Vincent’s, Vince and company purchases diamonds of all shapes and sizes, as well as fine jewelry, sapphires, and rubies, from both individuals and estates. “In addition to purchasing diamonds and fine jewelry at the highest possible prices, we also offer sellers a totally unique selling experience,” says Vince. Vincent’s meets with each client on an appointment only basis in their Farragut office, offering a secure, private, and safe environment. ith the temperature rising in the months ahead, who’s not excited to make room for this spring’s latest fashions? “I’ve just returned from the Atlanta Apparel Market, and I just know that you’re going to be surprised by this upcoming season’s new fashions,” said Stacy Pearson, co-owner of Tula Boutique. “In fact, with new spring fashions arriving daily, it’s hard

everything you need for that total look.” “Come in and take advantage of savings of up to 50% on our current inventory of winter apparel during the month of February,” said Debbie. “For daily sneak previews of Tula’s spring fashions, check us out and ‘like us’ on Facebook: Tula Boutique Knoxville. Stacy and I look forward to helping you find those special pieces for your spring wardrobe.”

to resist not to re-merchandise the boutique right away.” “To make space for our new spring merchandise, however, we need to clear out our winter apparel, which is great news for fashion-minded shoppers,” said Tula Boutique’s other co-owner and Stacy’s mom, Debbie Reed. “To make room for our new spring fashions, we will be offering up to 50% off on most apparel in the boutique throughout February.” Here’s something that shopping at Tula Boutique offers that you might be unaware of. Tula only inventories two items in each size offered, so it’s not likely that you’ll see your selection on someone else at that upcoming party or event. Tula Boutique also offers fashions that are true exclusives that are unavailable anywhere else in the area. “We also want to remind our customers that we carry sizes XS through 3X,” said Stacy. “Of course, you’ll also discover a wide assortment of accessories to help you complete your new ensemble, including handbags, jewelry, boots, and scarves…

February 22 • 8 pm • Bijou Theatre After selling out the Bijou in just his first time playing there back in June of 2012, Brad Blackwell is back – only this time for the release of his brand new EP “Combustible.” At just 23 years old, Brad Blackwell has managed to accomplish quite a bit for the short time he’s been playing music. Since being named East Tennessee’s Best Local Artist by the Knoxville News Sentinel in 2010, Brad has put out two highly acclaimed albums (“Blue Sky” and “Fresh”), written songs with some of Nashville’s top writers,

headlined shows at The Tennessee Valley Fair and Nashville’s Blue Bird Café, and opened for artists such as Edwin McCain and Darius Rucker. Brad Blackwell’s name is sure to be found at the top of the charts in no time, and with the strength of the songs being released on “Combustible,” he is taking yet another huge stride in that direction. Celebrate This Valentine Season at Estate Treasures

D

iscover a treasure trove of

both vintage and contemporary jewelry that will transform this Valentine season from the ordinary into the extraordinary by giving a one-of-a-kind gift that will become a legacy, which will be shared with children and grandchildren. A gift that will show that special someone just how much you care. Estate Treasures is an exciting, new boutique located in Turkey Creek where vintage is new again. They feature estate jewelry collections that have been passed down through generations of grandmothers and daughters. Sterling silver serving pieces, Native American turquoise/sterling silver, diamond bridal sets… it’s a visual delight. You can spend hours looking at these fine pieces and collections and still feel like you have not seen everything, and new merchandise is added daily. Most of the antique showcases at Estate Treasures came from a former jewelry store in the Tri-City area that opened in 1890. Others came from general stores of the same era. The entire store has a warm, comfortable feeling. If antique jewelry isn’t your cup of tea, we also have more contemporary estate jewelry, several original oil paintings by local artist, Ron Williams, and “mantiques,” which are a collection antiques that appeal to a more masculine audience. We have really worked hard to find interesting, oneof-a-kind items that you do not see just anywhere. The jewelry and antiques at Estate Treasures range from budget to luxury must-haves for any style or occasion. Every piece has a story to tell. Estate Treasures also features a jeweler on-site to service repairs and sizing. Do you have broken pieces or jewelry that you no longer want or need? We will buy your gold and silver and pay you a fair, current price. Or use it as cash to buy something new, or at least something old that’s new to you. We are always looking for new inventory and will buy entire estates. All of Estate Treasures’ owners and staff have 30+ years of experience in both fine jewelry and collections, and people throughout our community have a deep appreciation for fine, vintage jewelry and collections. We invite you to visit us at Estate Treasures to share our passion for the past and rediscover our promise for the future.

The Importance of Ambience cc o r d i n g

to

R o g e t ’s t h e s a u r u s , “ambience” is a general impression produced by a predominant quality or characteristic. Synonyms are air, atmosphere, aura, feeling, mood, smell, and tone, just to name a few. It’s a derivative from the French word ambiat, and the word itself certainly gives an aura (another great word) that is just more compelling than “feeling.”

I’m sure you’ve noticed the various degrees of ambience when patronizing restaurants, hair salons, and even auto dealers’ service waiting rooms. A restaurant with the right ambience is as clean as a whistle; the aromas

from the kitchen are delectable, the lighting is low, the music sets a mood, and the table linens are impeccable. Even a service area waiting room in a reputable car dealership has comfortable seating, upbeat music, upto-date magazines, and a coffee bar. Is ambience a luxury or a necessity? If not a necessity, why do businesses spend money on creating the right ambience? Because it does matter. It’s also reflective of a company’s commitment to secure your loyalty and, in general, it’s an invaluable and silent marketing approach. Your overall experience with any business should include how you feel when you spend your money. Ambience alone cannot ever replace customer service, quality, or value, but it can add to your overall shopping experience. At Next To New, we have made great strides to elevate your shopping experience. Merchandise is presented by category; it’s also sized and colorized. From the comfortable and roomy leopard-print chairs to the striking black crystal chandelier, to the well-lit dressing rooms and even to the aroma of our “scents of the month,” we want to make your experience memorable when you shop with us!

Our upscale consignment store offers a great selection of up-to-date fashion and designer merchandise at terrific prices, and be assured it’s always presented with care, attention to detail, and that all important “ambience.” Whether you’re a consignor, customer, or both, make Next To New your favorite shop in Knoxville. Political Drama “Farragut North” Opens at Oak Ridge Playhouse

O

n the heels of the

presidential election, Oak Ridge Playhouse presents the gripping backroom political drama, “Farragut North.” Though the title of the play references a Metro stop on the Washington, DC subway system, the story of a young, ambitious press secretary for a Democratic presidential candidate is set in Iowa just before the statewide caucuses. Playwright Beau Willimon’s script offers an air of authenticity due to his own career as a young political operative working on a number of campaigns, including Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential bid. The revelatory play exposes the high aim and drive of the political animal and the depths to which it will stoop to win. “It’s a fascinating study on human nature,” says Managing Artistic Director Reggie Law,

who is helming the production. “It really points out that no matter what your role is in a political campaign, and no matter where you rank, you want to win, and it’s not necessarily the election.” Willimon initially struggled to gain backing for the play, but gained attention and opened in New York after Warner Brothers acquired the film rights on the story. It became the

inspiration for the George Clooney film “The Ides of March,” featuring an all-star cast that included Ryan Gosling, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Giamatti. At the Playhouse, the ensemble cast of “Farragut North” includes Drew Barksdale, Ashly Goodwin, Mark Jennings, Tony Cedeño, David Zannucci, Gene Spejewski, Jackie Kallister, and Joe Jaynes. “Farragut North” performances are Saturday, February 2, at 8 pm, with a Sunday matinee on February 3 at 2 pm. Final performances are Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, at 8 pm and a final Sunday matinee on February 10 at 2 pm. The production contains mature language and situations. For more information, call 482.9999 or visit www.orplayhouse.com. Tickets range in price from $16 to $22 depending on performance date. Februar y 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Marcy Souza In Marcy Souza’s world, a day could be spent crawling in a cave to inspect bats, examining a sick lion, or swimming in a river to collect salamanders. The University of Tennessee researcher was recently featured on NBC’s The Today Show for her efforts to save bats from white nose syndrome, a fungus that threatens the bats’ existence. “Bats play a vital role in our ecosystem, and the loss of them could lead to dire consequences,” said Marcy. “The species of bats affected by white nose syndrome eat tons of bugs, including dreaded mosquitoes! Without bats, we may end up with more bugs that spread disease or destroy crops, leading to increased use of pesticides.” Marcy has been at UT since July of 2005. She’s been an assistant professor of public health and wildlife medicine since 2008. “I became involved working with bats because of my interest in infectious diseases of wildlife,” she said. “My ‘passion’ is not necessarily for bats specifically, but more for the concept of ‘One Health,’ which emphasizes

the interdependence of the health of humans, animals, and the environment.” Marcy earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, her DVM from North Carolina State University, and her MPH from the University of Tennessee. She is also a diplomate (boarded specialist) in two veterinary specialty organizations: the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. “If I’m doing field research, a typical day could include crawling into a cave with a backpack to sample bats or swimming in a cold mountain stream to collect and sample hellbenders from some of East Tennessee’s watersheds,” she said. “When I’m on clinical duty, a day could include trimming a rabbit’s teeth, examining a sick lion, or performing dental work on a bear. The least interesting is the desk work – whenever you do field research, much more time is spent looking at and analyzing the data at your computer than being outside.”

Being featured on The Today Show helped the importance of Marcy’s work become recognized. “It was great to have The Today Show along with us for the trip in Kentucky,” she said. “White nose syndrome is arguably the largest epidemic of North American wildlife ever. It’s good to let people know about the problem and realize the implications of the loss of bats. It’s also always fun to take people out of their element and see how they do! The Today Show crew had to put on tyveks (big, white, protective coveralls), helmets, and head lamps and belly crawl into a cave with lots of heavy, expensive equipment! This certainly wasn’t their usual working conditions, but they did great!”

By Invitation Only! Recently Wolfgang Interiors & Gifts finished designing and furnishing the dining room at Renee and Steve’s house. The entire color palette and theme was based around the existing beautiful silk rug and is reflected in their draperies, artwork, and ceiling color. The next design challenge was to create a table top theme for a dinner party with dishes and accessories that would complementtheircurrentcolor palette, but can also be passed on for generations. Diane Dalton, designer and bridal registry consultant, knew immediately how to achieve the results we were after. “The trick is to slightly mix and match dishes from different companies,” said Diane. We started with a wooden, handcarved, and silver leaved placemat. For added drama, a Juliska charger was placed on top of a Match charger. Using two chargers with different texture and depth can not only create interest, but also serve a more functional purpose during dinner parties. For example, dessert could be served on a clear plate on the pewter charger only as your last course. All the bowls, dinner, and salad plates were selected for their colors as well as for their timeless designs. Engraved coasters from Arte Italica with the family initial

“H” gives this table top setting a very personal touch. Another important part was to create a centerpiece with height that would still allow all guests to see and communicate with one another while sitting at the table. The solution was a white cake stand, which was decorated with ivy and roses in white and soft pink. Elevating it on our cake stand gave it just enough height to raise it above the rest of all the table settings, bowls, and glasses. To increase the ambience and “wow factor” for dinner parties, we placed a wrought iron candelabra in the corner of the room which can be lit, preferably with drip-free candles. Roses and some fresh cut vines from our own gardens completed this stunning piece and finished our decorating challenge for this dining room. Please contact Wolfgang Interiors & Gifts if you would like to get an idea on how we can help you with your own projects or stop by our showroom in Turkey Creek between EarthFare and Salsaritas.

Are Those Images Doctored? It’s hard to believe that we are in

our fifth year of business with Surface Doc. I remember my husband, John, missing out on so much happening in our family because he was busy working in restaurant management 60+ hours a week. I was frazzled and actively looking for a new career path, something we could possibly do together. That’s when I found some videos from a company in Arizona demonstrating cleaning equipment that was so dramatic, I was immediately intrigued but skeptical. If this equipment was “for real,” I wanted to know more. So, when John got home that night we watched in awe one video clip after another. We saw carpet, tile and grout, concrete, stone, and most every surface we could think of undergo dramatic transformation. A few days later we traveled west to see this equipment firsthand. When we saw in person what we had seen on the videos, we were instantly

sold, and Surface Doc, inc. was born the following week. Almost five years later, Surface Doc, inc. is going strong. In the first few months, we would pray for the phone to ring. Now it seems the phone rings constantly. Many weeks John is still working 60 hours a week, but he is doing what he loves to do, which makes all the difference. Being the only deep-cleaning company in the Knoxville area with this equipment has given our company a niche, which we are grateful for. Sometimes, when people check out Surface Doc’s website, they are as skeptical as we were. People have asked us, “Are those images doctored?” Even better is when they stand beside John as he does a test cleaning and exclaim “I can’t believe what I’m seeing. I never thought my floor could look like this again!” So, what makes Surface Doc different? Basically, we use a combination of extreme

heat to open the pores of your floor and add pressure and extraction to remove all foreign matter. Without this method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer Co-owner of your floor. With John 3,000 psi and 15 Fitzwilliam pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of the pores in your floor and taken away immediately. Also, we now use purified water to leave absolutely no residue. Now we have a host of our own unbelievable, but real photos and videos from previous jobs. You can see them at www. SurfaceDoc.com. A Tradition of Hope for the Future “Handcrafted Oriental

rugs can achieve far more than enhancing the atmosphere of virtually any room in your home. They can also tell a story: one rich in traditional history and another that offers the promise and hope of a bright future,” said Alex Zahir, owner of Knoxville-based AZ International, LLC, merchants of many of the finest hand-woven rugs available in the marketplace today. Alex sells more than extraordinary works of art. He offers beautifully hand-crafted rugs that contribute to the décor in your home and can become a legacy within your family as it’s passed on from generation to generation. But there’s another legacy at hand; that of three generations of rug weaving history that Alex first experienced as a child in his native Afghanistan. “As a child, I witnessed the entire hand-woven rug weaving process, from the natural dying of handspun wool, to the weaving of intricate patterns that transcend description, to the finishing of the finished rug,” said Alex. “We’re proud of the works of art we created and continue to create. We’re part of a thousand of year’s old tradition of beautifully hand-crafted rugs that tell the history of a people and a region.” But there’s another story that reaches far beyond these individual works of art. It’s the future of Afghanistan and its people and an industry that has been ravaged by decades of war. It’s the story of an initiative to revitalize this industry and its people, in the face of adversity, to offer Afghanistan the stability, peace, and hope for the future it deserves. Alex, a U.S. resident for more than two decades, acting in an advisory capacity with his associate, Rob Leahy, of Fine Rugs of Charleston, has been working with the United States Department of Commerce’s Afghanistan Investment & Reconstruction task force. The initiative, titled “Sheep to Shop,” is tasked with the responsibility of

identifying and addressing the challenges faced in today’s Afghanistan rug production supply chain and to propose and implement solutions. Alex, who is proficient in six languages and draws upon his firsthand knowledge of the Afghan culture, has already made his presence felt within this bold initiative. “This initiative has tremendous short- and long-term potential for my countrymen,” he said. “It offers an alternative to years of war and transforms hate into hope.” With 20% of Afghanistan’s entire population touched by the value chain of this woven-rug industry, the consequences of this initiative are enormous, with the nation’s future in the balance. Rug weaving and allied businesses touch five million people’s lives in Afghanistan. Weaving alone employs one million people and four million people are working on other segments of this industry. “I’m proud of my contribution thus far and look forward to continuing my efforts with the Department of Commerce,” said Alex. “I’m focusing on the marketing and sales of these hand-crafted treasures with my new rug gallery. Each rug I sell represents a rich tradition and history, a legacy for your family, and a contribution to the stability and hope for a people who, like you, strive for peace for their family. Readers interested in learning more about the “Sheep to Shop” initiative to aid the people of Afghanistan, and to discover why the area’s leading designers rely on AZ International to assist them in the home decorating projects, are encouraged to visit Alex at AZ’s showroom at 5215 Kingston Pike. February in the Garden Rain, rain, go away! I hope February is dryer than January. This is winter in East Tennessee. Our temperatures and precipitation seem to be on a rollercoaster that has us dressing in t-shirts one day and down jackets the next, and we never leave home without an umbrella! For those days when we actually get a warm and dry day, there are things you can do to get ready for spring. ›› Bulbs are causing lots of questions right now. They’re coming up before they should, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Our unpredictable winters make this a frequent problem, and there’s never been any permanent damage to any of my bulbs at home. If yours don’t have mulch around them, a light layer will add protection. Otherwise, cut some blooms if the temperature is going to drop and bring them in for a bouquet. ›› It’s time to prune summer bloomers such as roses, butterfly bushes, and spirea. It’s best done on a mild, dry day. For

those who are interested, the Farmer’s Almanac says to do it on February 13th and 14th if the weather permits. Always prune out dead and diseased wood first, and then move on to overgrown areas. Remember, look twice and cut once! ›› Let me make a plea for Crepe Myrtles: please don’t cut them! I was in Atlanta recently for market, and they have such beautiful Crepes. They limb them up and prune out suckers, but never trim the tops. Before you succumb to peer pressure and whack yours, drive to Atlanta and look at how gorgeous they are if you just leave them alone. ›› Don’t prune spring bloomers now. If you do, you’ll very effectively remove all your buds, and your spring bloomers will be non-bloomers. ›› Look at your shrubs while they’re dormant, even if you’re not planning on pruning. There are some sneaky weeds that try to hide in your shrubs. Wild honeysuckle,

grape vines, and Hackberry trees are easier to identify and remove this time of year. ›› Speaking of weeds, there are lots of them. The mild winter is proving to be a wonderful setting for them. It’s too cold for herbicides to be effective, so hand weeding is required. Weeding tools and trowels will prevent the weed from breaking off at the soil level. ›› Keep an eye on your perennials. If some of them have “heaved,” or pushed themselves out of the ground, push them back in. You can still spread mulch to protect them if they’re emerging too early. ›› If you’re planning a vegetable garden, you can start getting it ready now. Add compost to the bed when the ground isn’t soggy or frozen, and use a tiller to work it in. You can also start cold weather vegetables like broccoli and cabbage in cold frames and direct sow seeds like lettuce, spinach, early peas, and onion sets late in the month. You can even start perennial herbs and slow growing annuals indoors, but wait on the warm weather plants like tomatoes and basil. A warm winter doesn’t necessarily mean a warm spring. ›› Your houseplants can use a dose of fertilizer this month and probably also a bath. Even if your house is pristine, plants tend to gather dust, which can block pores. Sponge them off or put small ones in the sink and spray them down. Larger plants can go in the shower. ›› Cold winter days are a great time to plan your garden. Looking at pictures and catalogs filled with beautiful flowers is a great way to lift your spirits. If you need help, this is a great time for a landscape consultation. ›› Don’t forget the birds! This is typically the time of year when they start running out of readily available natural food. Please use a high quality mix with lots of black oil sunflower seeds, safflower, nuts, and some millet for the ground feeders. Nyjer seed is the favorite of finches. Birds need fatty seeds and suet to keep their weight up over the winter and give them energy. They also need water, so if you don’t have year-round birdbaths, consider placing a pan of water near their feeder. I’m really excited about some things we have coming in for the spring! We were approved to be a vendor for the new HGTV line of plants, so look for those this spring. We also have some wonderful new items coming for the gift shop. Watch for emails and Facebook updates, or just stop by and see us. We want to help you make your home beautiful this year. Hang in there, spring is coming!

Reduce Risk of Lung Cancer!

How can you reduce your risk of lung cancer?

Be sure to test for radon and fix any problems that may exist at your home or business. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer among smokers and the top cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, killing even more people than drunk driving! Radon, originating from the natural breakdown of uranium in rocks and soil, can seep indoors and become a serious health hazard for your family. Invisible and odorless, it can appear in any type of home – old or new, with or without a basement.

Avoid Mold & Radon Health Risks!

Protect Your Home from Moisture Damage! Eliminate moisture, mold, and mildew in homes with crawl spaces or dirt basements.

2nd Leading Cause of Lung Cancer! The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend that ALL HOMES BE TESTED FOR RADON.

$10 OFF

Continuous Monitor Test $50 OFF Mitigation One coupon limit

Our home is RADON-SAFE! Radon gas moves indoors via openings and cracks in the foundation and through sump pumps, floor drains, and even concrete block walls! Radon can also get in through drinking water. Dangerous radon levels have been found in every state, and the EPA estimates that about one in 15 homes have high levels of this carcinogen. The only way to know if your home has a high radon level is to test for it, and Dayton’s is part of the National Radon Defense Network. Because the federal government consistently rates radon as a top environmental risk and the leading environmental cause of cancer, the EPA and U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested. If your radon levels are elevated, Dayton’s can install an affordable and aesthetically pleasing mitigation system. Receive $10 off a continuous monitor test and $50 off mitigation if high radon levels are detected. Another component of healthy breathing air is to have a CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System with a SaniDry dehumidifier that is Energy Star rated and includes an air filtration system. Receive $250 off a CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System (with 25-year warranty), plus Dayton’s will beat any competitor’s price by $100 with equal components!

Home Color Tips from the Pros:

How to Bring Bold Hues into the Kitchen and Bath

W

hy is it that some people can do daring things with color in their living rooms or bedrooms, but stick with the strongholds of beige and white in their kitchens and baths? As bright hues are surfacing in kitchen and bath design trends, existing oftneutral palettes make it easy to introduce bold splashes. Whether it’s with a new faucet finish, a vibrant wall color, a playful backsplash – even a brightly-colored sink – adding color instantly creates a personalized and pleasing look in your kitchen or bath. Debating the best way to bring new colors into your home? Consider these tips. 1. Find your perfect (color) match. Before you begin mixing and matching paint chips with backsplash tile, identify a color that has long resonated with your own design or fashion aesthetic. Once that signature color

3. Harness the power of color. Color can have a big impact on mood and what happens in a space. Want your kitchen to be a comfortable space for your family that encourages an appetite in the pickiest of eaters? Incorporate orange. If you long for a peaceful bathroom oasis, bring in calming blues and soothing greens.

has been identified, a homeowner often feels more confident introducing those brighter hues in a more permanent manner. 2. Make a color splash in the sink. A brightly-colored sink makes a delightful and memorable impact. Whether it’s a farmhouse sink in the kitchen or a lavatory in the powder room, a bright sink is a perfect piece to build upon as you bring new colors into your space.

4. Focus on a focal point. Incorporating color doesn’t require a complete redo. Instead, focus on a smaller project within the space to create a focal point or accent. Color can act as an eye magnet to create a focal-point-worthy design statement that draws a room together visually and gives you a solid foundation on which to build out the room’s design theme. 5. Do your homework. If you’re considering a fresh coat of paint, a bright backsplash, or bold new sink, experiment with apps and different websites to see how new colors can best be applied to your space.

The Anatomy of a Great Window

A

s an experienced

replacement window and door consultant, the selection of a top quality replacement window is a simple one. But as a homeowner, the selection process is challenging. Most homeowners are uncertain as to just which characteristics are important when choosing a new replacement window, and their confusion is made even greater by competing claims from dozens of different window manufacturers, each claiming to be number one. I’ll try to provide you with the basic information you’ll need to make a great choice. But before I begin, consider this. The best window, improperly installed, is no better than your worst choice. Let’s assume then that installation is not an issue. So just why do windows fail? Window quality is inherent in the manufacturing process. Certainly a quality window must be manufactured to stringent manufacturing standards and procedures, but it goes far beyond that. The number one characteristic in determining the

quality of a window are the materials used to construct them. But perhaps not for the reasons you might think. Windows are exposed to significant temperature variations called thermal expansion, and this thermal expansion causes the materials your windows are constructed from to expand and contract. Windows manufactured from different materials expand and contract at different rates, resulting in window seal failure that can cause clad wooded windows to rot. The reason being is that wood and aluminum expand and contract at different rates, causing it to separate at the corners and allowing water to come in contact with the wood. This causes the wood to rot, and the worst part about it is that it is hidden rot. The only time you realize you have a problem is when it rots completely through to the inside of your house. By this time the moisture entering your home may have caused some structural damage as well. Marvin Windows, one of the nation’s premier window and door manufacturing companies since 1912, is the pioneer in the development of Ultrex® fiberglass, a material so strong and durable that one

There’s No Better 10527 Kingston Pike, Suite A Knoxville, TN 37922 52

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2013

of the country’s most respected consumer reporting agencies rated Marvin Windows number one. Ultrex® has less than half the thermal expansion of aluminum, one-third that of wood/vinyl composite, and onesixth that of vinyl. What does all this mean? Low thermal expansion means a stronger seal, reducing the risk of seal failure. In fact, as the number one Marvin window distributor in North America, we have never replaced a Marvin Infinity replacement window due to seal failure. If you’re currently considering replacement windows or doors and would like to discover why Marvin Windows manufactured from Ultrex® has been rated number one in the nation, and why CRS Exteriors has become the number one Marvin replacement window dealership in the country, I invite you to call me today.

If sneezing and watering eyes have you thinking that you might be coming down with the flu, you could be right. But these symptoms might also result from colder temperatures out-of-doors. So just what does that mean? Simply put, the colder it is outside, the more frequently your home’s furnace cycles. Here’s what happens. Trapped inside of your home’s hundreds of feet of heating and cooling ducts and your home’s air handler are dust, pollen, dirt, and debris that become trapped throughout the years. Try as you might, the dust you periodically vacuum from your heating and cooling ducts is only the surface dust and dirt, and not the dust, dirt, and pollen that exists within your ductwork that are re-deposited and re-circulated throughout your home each and every time your home’s furnace cycles. The solution is simple, and now, for a very limited time, even more affordable. Duct Doctor, America’s number one air duct cleaner, can safely and quickly clean your home’s heating and cooling system and ducts, working with its patented, truck-mounted vacuum system and high velocity cleaning apparatus that is two to four times more powerful than competitive air duct cleaning systems. Also, Duct Doctor not only cleans both your home’s supply and return air lines, but also your evaporator coil, drip pan, blower fan, and the inside compartments of your air handling unit. They even wash and clean all grills and registers. For a limited time, you can take advantage of Duct Doctor’s comprehensive service offer for only $350 for a single system during the month of February only. But to take advantage of this more than $100 savings, you need to call now and book before February 28th and place a $50 deposit, which will be applied to the $350 cost of cleaning when the work is performed. To learn more and to take advantage of these savings, call today and say goodbye to sneezing and watering eyes. Duct Doctor USA of Knoxville

It’s Imp oss Ibl e to know your limits without testing them. It’s a truth that Pat Green has employed in his career, one that has propelled him to repeatedly refashion his sound, his approach, and his own perception of who he is. He’s simultaneously a Grammynominated hit maker with an outsider reputation, a Texas inspiration, and a mainstream country artist who can rock arena and stadium stages with the likes of Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney. Each of those roles has its own place. But each of them is too small to define Pat Green, who, after 15 years in the recording business, has earned the right to be everything Pat Green can be. every day, but during February, the love of cupid shines upon them and puts a spell on us at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits,” declares Ms. C. Some fun ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your pets: • Take your pet for a long walk. Play ball outside an extra 15 minutes. Cuddle longer than usual. At Ms. C’s, guests receive a lot of individual care. • Treat your pet to a firstclass groom. Pets are just like humans: during winter months, low humidity can make your skin dry and scaly. A thorough grooming will leave your pet clean and comfortable from head to toe. A blend of moisturizing botanicals, vitamins A & E, aloe vera, and oatmeal are particularly good for your pet’s coat. Ms. C’s is offering special

moisturizing baths and grooming sessions with very reasonable rates. • Many pets love socializing with other dogs. Arrange an exceptional Valentine’s present for your pet. Instead of your pet being home alone while you’re at work, reserve “day care,” providing your pet a time to romp and play. Daycare at Ms. C’s is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. If you’re leaving town to celebrate Valentine’s Day, make reservations for your pet to stay at Ms. C’s, where he/she will be pampered and loved while you’re away.

in 1963 when a small group of Knoxville artists who were invited by the late Kermit Ewing, the Head of the University of Tennessee Art Department, to participate in an exhibition of watercolor paintings at the University’s McClung Museum to its burgeoning membership of 47 today, the Knoxville Watercolor Society continues its tradition of educating its members and the community to the understanding of aqueous mediums. Informational meetings are conducted monthly, and several member shows are planned throughout the year. The Society also sponsors workshops with well-known and respected artists as part of its educational initiatives. Many members also exhibit with the Tennessee Watercolor Society and other state aqueous organizations such as the Southern Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA, and the American Watercolor Society and consistently win regional, state, and national awards.

Annually, the organization provides a scholarship for a University of Tennessee student who is majoring in watercolor painting. It also donates to the University of Tennessee Ewing Gallery and maintains membership in the Arts and Culture Alliance of Knoxville. Additionally, grants have been made to the Arts Council of Greater Knoxville, The Knoxville Museum of Art, the Tennessee Resource Center, and the Tennessee Art Association High School Scholarship Program. Through the years, the area’s increasing interest in the aqueous mediums is a result in part due to the growth and development of the Knoxville Watercolor Society. The Society plans several activities throughout the year in celebration of its 50th year. New membership is juried by the members once a year in November. Associate membership is also available to anyone who would like to benefit from the monthly programs and workshops. For information about membership, visit www.knoxvillewatercolor society.com.

Your Pet

A

S Any pet lover will tell

you, our four-legged friends bring us great joy while offering unconditional love and companionship. They become a part of the family! That’s why I founded CollageA-Pet. I’ve combined my passion for art with my desire to help people celebrate the important role their furry friend has in their lives, be it today or in a cherished memory. All too often, people have special photos tucked away in boxes or in photo books on the shelf. At Collage-A-Pet, I work with pet owners to create a larger than life, customized portrait of their pet that serves as a loving reminder of their pet and true piece of art. Those who see Collage-A-Pets in person can’t help but glide their fingers across the textured surface, wondering what it’s made of. The answer is simple: paper! To be more specific, we use high-end exotic fibers from all around the world. We also use woods, metals, ropes, fabrics, paints, ribbons, faux fur, feathers, yarn, glitter, pet toys… anything I think will make each specific collage very special for each pet owner. Who do you know that would cherish a collage of their pet? Your mom’s cat and best friend as a child, you and your spouse’s first “kid” before children, or perhaps the dog your kids are making memories with today… the list is endless. I’d be honored to help you create your own legacy collage. Learn more about creating your custom pet portrait at www.collageapet.com!

Relationships Bloom Through the Hearts of Volunteers s Valentine’s Day approaches, people across the city will be rushing to their local florist to buy beautiful bouquets of flowers for their significant others to show them how special they are. Through Random Acts of Flowers, couples and families are spending their time together in a more unique way: by delivering flowers to patients in local hospitals and nursing homes.

Ron and Terri Mahs

“Flowers make people happy, and we like being a tiny link in the chain,” says Mike and Jackie Hardin, who found out about RAF through a billboard, which led them to learn how to volunteer at RAF’s website, www.randomacts offlowers.org. Mike and Jackie do their part by delivering floral donations to the RAF workshop from Sevierville. Random Acts of Flowers is a Knoxville-based 501(c)(3) non-profit charity whose volunteers collect flowers from weddings, memorial services, florists, special events, grocery stores, and churches to recycle and re-purpose them into beautiful bouquets for delivery to patients in area hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice care centers. The charitable service supports mental health, spreads joy, and offers comfort through random, thoughtful, botanical deliveries. Ron and Terri Mahs experienced the mission of Random Acts of Flowers when a local funeral home suggested that they consider donating flowers after a memorial service. Shortly after, Ron tried his hand at arranging bouquets but decided they were better suited for delivery. Their time volunteering has created some special moments together, such as one of Ron’s favorite deliveries last Valentine’s Day to a 60

73-year-old lady who said she had never received flowers for Valentine’s Day. Another fond memory was RAF’s 3,000th delivery to a lady who said she awoke to another “blah” day in the hospital and then felt like a movie star when Ron delivered the flowers. Bud and Wendy Matthews began volunteering with RAF when Wendy saw an article in a local magazine. She recruited her husband to place a piece of his woodworking in RAF’s annual Art in the Garden fundraiser. They now do weekly pick-ups in “Flora,” the infamous RAF van. However, volunteering isn’t just for couples. RAF enjoys a great deal of families who choose to spend their time together volunteering. Terry Finnerty and her granddaughter, Alissa Finnerty, use RAF in order to spend a little extra time together while also helpAlissa Finnerty and Terry Finnerty ing Alissa fulfill a college scholarship requirement. They both agree that the joy of “putting smiles on the faces of people who otherwise may have little to smile about” is the best part of volunteering. Peary Purvis and her mother, Mary Sue Bjorklund, became familiar with RAF through a family friend. They love spending time together while doing what they love: helping others. Whether it’s arranging bouquets or picking up donations, they agree that the mission of RAF is very rewarding. RAF has delivered nearly 20,000 bouquets to patients in the Knoxville area in a very short period of time, and its success has largely been dependant on the many volunteers that spend their time in RAF’s workshop and on the road making deliveries. However, as the stories of these volunteers highlight, RAF presents a unique opportunity for volunteers in the area to not just show their love for each other, but for others who might need a smile as well.

Refocusing Your Financial Goals for the Future

I

believe that many Americans

make a commitment to review and refine their personal financial plans annually. The truth is that most of us forget or ignore this objective, and often our financial plans go ignored for years. There are also a large number of us who have no plans at all. Whatever your reasons for neglecting to review your current plan or not planning at all, a comprehensive, well thought-out plan can help have an extraordinary impact on both your short- and long-term future. can impact how you will live in the future and can determine the quality of life you and your loved ones will enjoy in the future. Despite where you are in your life, there is no time like the present to update your current plan or to implement a new strategy that takes into account your situation, short- and long-term goals, and the future care of your spouse, children, and grandchildren. It’s not only a responsibility, but it’s your legacy. By making a thorough assessment of your current financial situation and by setting goals for the future, I can help you map out a strategy that will maximize your investment returns consistent with your risk tolerances to ensure that you are, and remain, on track to attain all of your financial goals. The past few years have been a time of great uncertainty, but have been a time of

great opportunity as well. If you need help with your current plan, or if you have no plan at all, I can provide assistance and guidance. To start, just pick up the phone to schedule a no obligation, no cost consultation.

Saban recently led Alabama to the BCS

National Championship, winning for the third time in four years. He also led LSU to the 2003 BCS National Championship and Alabama to the 2009 and 2011 BCS and AP National Championships, making him the first coach in college football history to win a national championship with two different Football Bown Subdivision schools. Saban and Paul “Bear” Bryant are the only coaches to win an SEC championship at two different schools. Saban is the first coach to win three BCS Championships and is the only active coach with three national titles. Nick Saban is married to Terry, and they have two children, Nicholas and Kristen. He graduated from Kent State University in Ohio, where he played defensive back for the football team. Saban made a cameo appearance as himself in the movie The Blind Side. He is also the co-founder, along with his wife Terry, of the foundation Nick’s Kids. This foundation has been used by the Sabans to help mentally challenged children ever since Saban started head coaching. In his first three years at Alabama, Nick’s Kids raised more than $1 million. Previous year’s speakers have included Steve Spurrier, Bruce Pearl, Pete Rose, Kirk Cameron, Lou Ferrigno, and this past year was a tribute to the 1998 University of Tennessee National Championship football team. For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comforts of your own home with its online digital collection. I

GEt to do a number of interesting tasks working for Knox Heritage; every day is something fun and different. One of my favorite things to do is research. I research historic architecture and the people who designed, built, worked, and lived in these buildings. I get a lot of inquires about this very topic, because many individuals are interested in learning about the history of buildings. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to have a history degree to do this – you can do it all on your own at the local library. Knoxville is fortunate enough to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, not to be confused with Frank H. McClung Museum, the wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee. The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library, housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center in downtown Knoxville. The McClung is home to a large collection 66

of regional history and historic documents, and it is a top notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to subscription web-based genealogical databases… and that’s just the beginning. The McClung makes it easy for anyone to stop by. It’s open every day, with ranging hours each day. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung. If you’re just starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, why not visit and take one of the free introduction to internet genealogy classes? Find out who lived in your house in 1925, or check out where your grandmother lived in the newly released 1940 U.S. Census. While you’re downtown, why not make a day of it and have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General

Collection, a collection of photographs taken by Knoxville’s own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. I also suggest exploring the Knox County Two Centuries Photograph Collection, a group of more than 3,000 historic images owned by more than 200 Knox County citizens and organizations and collected in 1991 for the 200th birthday of Knox County. For fans of Victorian architect George Barber, you will be excited to know that the digital collection now has a wonderful group of architectural plan books and documents to review. Next time it’s raining and you’re looking for something to do, visit http://cmdc. knoxlib.org and start exploring. The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is located on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center located at 601 S. Gay Street. Open every day, admission is free and open to the public. Making This Holiday a Bit SWEETER…

Like it or not, the LOVE-liest holiday of the

year is approaching! Having a sweetie to share the day with is nice, but perhaps the true purpose of Valentine’s Day should be about spreading the love. To have a customer come in and find something that they love and something that makes them feel confident is so rewarding for me. There’s nothing better than that.”

Th e S t o c kr o o m

After years of traveling around

with pop-up boutiques and fashion shows, Kim Safi and her husband were ready for a home base. They found the perfect location in Knoxville. “The Stockroom is our brand-new storefront that opened in late September of 2012,” said Kim. “It is a contemporary women’s clothing store that has everything from dresses and tunics to designer jeans and handbags. We also carry great accessories, including costume and sterling silver jewelry. Our store also has a unique vintage collection.” While The Stockroom is new, Kim’s company, Just for You, LLC, has been in business since 1996. Kim and her husband fell in love with the building because

of its great size and location. “It’s in a great location, because it’s in the general Turkey Creek area, but off the beaten path just a bit, so we avoid the crazy traffic,” she said. “Our building is also very big. When you come into the store, you simply see our store space and that’s it. But there is a whole other side of The Stockroom that we call our office and warehouse. It’s where we all work and get things done behind the scenes. It’s where we hold our inventory and get it ready for the store or other events. We really have a versatile business, because we have multiple businesses in one – our storefront and our online website and vintage store.” Kim spends most of her time in the store, mingling with new customers and catching up with the ones

I also enjoy the mix of medical skin care, surgical procedures, and pathology. Cosmetic dermatology is an exciting and ever-changing field that appeals to my creative and artistic side.” She founded Elizabeth Anderson Dermatology in November of 2007, and it’s been growing ever since. “Finding time to manage the administrative side of a medical practice is the most challenging aspect of my day,” she said. “I went into medicine to take care of patients, but I know that I cannot provide the highest level of care to my patients if the practice is not managed well.” Dr. Anderson attended m e d i ca l s c h o o l a t t h e University of Tennessee, Memphis, where she graduated as valedictorian. She completed her dermatology residency at Vanderbilt, then spent two years in Philadelphia for a fellowship in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her workdays are very busy, including a wide variety of responsibilities. “I usually start the morning with a skin surgery, often removing a skin cancer,”

she’s known for years. She also stays on top of trends in the ever-changing fashion industry so she can be ready for the next season. “No day is typical when you own a fashion business, but that’s what makes what I do so exciting,” she said. “Every day is different.” Kim worked in retail while she was in school and loved it, so she entered the fashion wholesale industry. Now that she knows the ins and outs of both retail and wholesale, she’s able to use her expertise to improve her business. “I enjoy meeting the people that come into the store every day and helping them find clothing that looks great on them,” she said. “To have a customer come in and find something that they love and something that makes them feel confident is so rewarding for me. We see a wide range of patients with conditions such as warts, acne, skin cancer, psoriasis, and lupus. Cosmetic patients and procedures, like Fraxel laser or Botox, are interspersed throughout the day. I also read my own pathology slides, typically between patients and at the end of the day.” At the end of the day, Dr. Anderson knows she’s helped her patients. “I love helping patients with severe skin problems like psoriasis as well as simple ones such as acne or warts,” she said. “I enjoy performing cosmetic procedures that help patients look their best and become confident in their appearance. Marketing for the Marketing Impaired

I

’m often surprised by how little marketing knowledge the average small business owner possesses. But when you consider how many hats most owners wear, the hours they work, and the absolute necessity to remain on top of their chosen careers, it’s not surprising that many small businesses forego marketing altogether or just do it poorly. In fact, I believe that as much as 70% of all small business marketing budgets are not invested wisely. I say invested, because your marketing dollars should be expected to produce a return over time that exceeds your investment. Here are some suggestions that may help you invest your marketing dollars more wisely. First, identify those unique characteristics that successfully differentiate you from your competitors. Now prioritize them. Which characteristic or characteristics provide you with the greatest potential for success? Second, identify who your target audience

is. What are their ages? Are they male or female? Do they own their own home? Where do they live? Third, what advertising platform (billboard, radio, TV, online, print) will most successfully and cost effectively reach your target audience? Will multiple platforms enhance your probability of success? For instance, should you place a display ad in two different print publications that target the same distribution area, or should you use, say, radio and print together? Fourth, keep your message consistent. Avoid becoming the idea of the moment advertiser that struggles to establish a clear brand or message with their target market. I’ve actually seen a client place three different print ads in three different publications that had the appearance of three different companies. Fifth, monitor your results over time and refine your message as necessary. Don’t expect miracles in the short term. Positive results require time.

Monitor your results over time and refine your message as necessary. Don’t expect miracles in the short term. Positive results require time. If you’ve done your homework and chosen wisely, you’ll experience the positive results you expect and deserve. But if you have difficulty staying the course and expect immediate results, you might be best advised to keep your money on the sidelines and hope that word-of-mouth works its magic. But then you’ll have succeeded where even Apple hasn’t. Undeniably one of the world’s best known brands, Apple will spend more than $1 billion dollars on advertising in 2013.

The Follow Up Factor BU S INE S S BA S IC S by Beth Townsend

F

ollowing up on people

is second nature to many successful in sales. Most successful salespeople understand the importance of keeping in touch with past and present clients in hopes of generating leads or referrals that one day become sales. It’s Marketing 101. However, in our culture of “immediate gratification,” follow up is easily overlooked as something that takes too long, or worse, something that does not produce results quickly enough. This can be detrimental. Recently, I’ve witnessed how this can affect decisions in several ways. My husband and I recently purchased a car. We were good customers with the ability to buy, needed a car quickly, and had a good idea what we were looking for. As we visited dealers, just one got contact information. We were amazed how few people got our names or numbers. How can you possibly follow up if you don’t have any way to contact your potential buyer? We bought the car from the only one who followed up. After moving in June, we began the search for a church home. This was a very important

decision for our family, as we were hoping to connect to a new church family in our new environment. Even though churches are not a typical business, to be successful in its mission, churches, like any organization, need to grow as well as retain its members. After a few weeks of visiting, we decided on a church where the primary point of contact was a person who did not acknowledge or return my emails. We changed our minds, ending up in a much smaller community where contact was much easier and immediately reciprocated. In November, I became a licensed realtor and recently went to my initial sales meeting with my new company. After a time of listening to how many of the agents were starting off the year with increased business, it was apparent the time was well invested for those who spent time following up on past clients. In each case, they ended up with measurable success. At the very least, they reconnected with a previous customer, which is essential to building any business and getting referrals. As harsh as it may seem, no matter how good of a job we do, we are replaceable. Following up produces business and stronger relationships, but it also creates loyalty. If you keep

in touch with others, you let them know they matter to you; that you thought of them. That is powerful. Often we can be flippant in conversation. “I’ll call you, let’s get together, let’s keep in touch.” Those are not statements, they are commitments. You build a network of people who matter to you and you matter to them. Don’t say you’ll keep in touch and then don’t. You lose credibility and depth of relationship. How important is the Follow Up Factor? It can cost business, it can earn business, and it can lead to loyalty. Factor those into your bottom-line.

Spotlight of the Month

Knoxville Ice Bears Skates and Skirts The Knoxville Ice Bears want as many fans as possible – including women. That’s why Knoxville’s hockey team has a program called Skates and Skirts, aimed at getting women involved in hockey.

T

his ladies-only program

was designed to better educate women about the great sport of hockey, the rules, the superstitions, the traditions, etc., furthermore identifying more with the guys that represent Knoxville playing for the Ice Bears,” said Mike Murray, President and General Manager of the Ice Bears. Murray’s wife, Yvonne, came up with the idea for Skates and Skirts, and it was made possible through the support of Deane Conley and 106.1 The River. “We have three events at different locations throughout the season that include six different players at each event, wherein they are

able to have the ladies participate in Q&A and have quite a few laughs along the way,” said Mike. “The main event is held at the Coliseum, wherein the ladies are rotated through various stations that include the team bus, dressing room, on-ice demonstrations, and, of course, the penalty box. They leave with goody bags and great door prizes. The end result for us is to have them return to a game with their family or a girls’ night out, now armed with the knowledge of their experience

through this program.” This month’s event will be at Club Le Conte on February 12th. The Grand Finale to Skates and Skirts, featuring all the Ice Bears players, will be at the Coliseum on March 5th. All women ages 19 and older are invited to participate. “This program is important in providing the information needed in order to get women interested in coming to enjoy what the Ice Bears valued entertainment can provide for them, their girlfriends, and their families,” said Mike. For more information on these great girls’ night out events, call 865.525.7825 or visit www.knox villeicebears.com. The last Skates and Skirts event requires a $40 entrance fee, as each lady is provided a swag bag, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks, along with a ticket to an Ice Bears game.

Lifestyle

Women We Know… Strong, Courageous, and Resilient It was March of 2008 when we flipped the switch and turned on our radio station, 106.1 The River, after building it from the ground up. It was probably the worst year in decades to start a business, let alone start a new radio station that was competing with big corporate competition. I told my husband we must be crazy to leave Naples, Florida and our Cindi Alpert cushy jobs running the family radio station to go out on our own and move 850 miles away with no friends, family, business contacts, and limited capital to start a new venture. The first phone call I made when I arrived was to the Knoxville Ice Bears, because I wanted to do business with this organization and sing the National Anthem at a game. They were so warm and inviting, and after hearing my audition tape, their promotions director booked me right away. We had a big job to do in Knoxville, and all odds were against us as independent broadcasters. I don’t know if it was the incredible hospitality of the Ice Bears staff and management or the fact that the Coliseum went nuts after that first heart pounding experience, singing the toughest song in the world. The arena resonated sound like no other I’ve heard and literally gave me chills, but at that moment, I knew I was ready for a new challenge and maybe, just maybe, Knoxville would be ready for me. This is part two of a series highlighting Knoxville women we know and their stories.

Bonnie Harlow

Professional Assistant and Organizer Not being in complete control has always been tough for me. I’m the stereotypical Type A personality that takes charge and likes things to be done a certain way. In 2004, being in control wasn’t an option. I received a call that every parent dreads, informing me that my nine-year-old son had a brain aneurysm and a stroke. Barely able to make it to the hospital to see my unconscious son before being rushed into surgery, I realized in this moment I had no control.

As a teacher at a Christian high school, I had presented a devotion on Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the LORD with all thy heart; and lean not to thy own understanding.” After surgery, as the neurosurgeon explained there’s no way to predict my son’s outcome, ranging from complete recovery to lifelong disability, I applied the lessons of this devotion right then Bonnie Harlow in my own life. My son is now 17 and a walking reminder that I can trust our wonderful God and the incredible people in my life. Though I still struggle, I know in my heart I can relax and let go.

Jennifer Ratcliff

Realtor When I relocated to Knoxville from Texas in June 2004, I only knew one person locally and honestly, not very well. I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom and enjoyed the extra time spent with my children. In 2006, I decided I wanted to return to the workforce. I had developed a keen interest in real estate and felt it would be a career that offered the flexibility my family needed. Starting my career was a much greater task than I anticipated, especially not being native to Knoxville and knowing a limited number of people. I hired help with the children, because most clients wanted to view homes Jennifer Ratcliff on nights and weekends. Finding someone to help take care of my children was the biggest obstacle, but thankfully I found a special individual who has lovingly helped me for five years now. I was forced outside my comfort zone, finding it crucial to introduce myself to new people. Learning to be my biggest promoter was extremely difficult. I think what helped the most was the realization, both by me and my clients, that I wasn’t a salesperson. Honestly, my primary interest is to help my clients find the house of their dreams.

Real estate is more than a job now; it’s become my way of helping others feel comfortable and supported through a difficult, life-changing process. I’m so thankful I’ve learned to face my fears and venture outside my comfort zone. I have a long way to go before I meet my goals, but in learning to trust myself, my knowledge, and my skills, I’ve taken the always treacherous first step.

Linda Heaton Parrent

Executive Managing Director of eWomenNetwork and Media Development Executive – East TN PBS It was a hot summer day in August 1968. I was eight years old. My mother and aunt were busy catching up, and the kids were taking turns jumping in the pool. I jumped in thinking it was four feet deep, but it was eight feet. I didn’t know how to swim yet and started to take in gulps of water each time my head bobbed up for air. I tried to call out for help; no one heard me because of the noise in the pool. My mother became aware of the situation and screamed out to save me. A woman heard my mother and ran to my aid by grabbing me by my hair – the only thing that was visible. When I was out of the water, I cried uncontrollably because the fear had taken over, and I knew if that lady didn’t pull me out, I would’ve died. The lady told me I had a mission to fulfill and was destined to do great things. At age eight, you don’t really take it seriously. Looking back now, she influenced me in my decisions. I guess she was always in the back Linda Heaton Parrent of my mind, guiding me in my decisions. I’ve always taken risks and walked through the door of opportunity. Today, I’m the new Media Development Executive with East Tennessee PBS and the Executive Managing Director of eWomenNetwork. My latest venture is launching LindaHeatonParrent.com – a Coaching and Speaking firm specializing in helping others find the direction they need to achieve and prosper. I believe we all have greatness in us, but we need to tap into it to find the significance in our lives. Februar y 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Relationships

by D e a nn a B r a n n, Ph.D.

Tips to Successfully Share Your Husband with Another Woman: His Mother! Sharing is something we’re taught at a very young age, starting with sharing our toys. Our parents told us that sharing is a nice thing to do and will make us feel good – and it does. So throughout the years, we’ve shared not only our toys with playmates, but also our clothes with sisters (sometimes begrudgingly), food with family, friends, and even strangers, and our knowledge with classmates and coworkers. We’ve shared ideas, feelings, books, and friends. You name it, we’ve probably shared it. So sharing your husband with his own mother really shouldn’t be so different, right? Regardless of the reason, remember that she’s his mother, and it doesn’t have to be a tug of war. Remember you are his wife; he chose you to marry and spend his life with. So being generous is actually much easier than you might think. With that in mind, here are some tips that will help you shift your perspective so you can successfully share your husband with

Etiquette

his family (particularly his mother): » Don’t think of his family as his family. You are starting (or continuing) on a long journey with an extended family. They are a part of your husband, so they are now a part of you and your life together. » Develop your own relationship with his mother – one that’s separate from your relationship with your husband. Seeing your mother-in-law as her own person and not just as your husband’s mother can help you diffuse at least some of your frustration. » Turn the tables around. Think how you would want your husband to treat you if he was helping you adjust to navigating changes in your relationship with your mother. If he’s struggling to find where his mother fits into his new life, instead of dictating to him or controlling him, focus on loving him, supporting him, and being his partner. » Look at the bigger picture, not just the specifics that are driving you crazy in the moment. This isn’t always easy to do, but it

helps to remember that you’re setting an example about how to treat others by what you do and say. So before you dig in your heels to make sure she knows her role and that you are now his priority, think to yourself, how can these tips make this transition work for all of us? The more you’re able to demonstrate that you and his family are really on the same side, the more everyone wins. After all, as your parents once told you, sharing and feeling good really do go hand-in-hand! Separation and Divorce This is a topic approached with sincerity and sensitivity, but one that’s important to reflect on with the idea of manners and social graces. Let’s focus on the children and how we can help this difficult transition be as gentle as possible. Before a separation or divorce, it’s respectful and honorable that both parents sit down with their children together and explain what’s happening before one parent moves out. Children should hear this from their parents, not other family members or friends. These moments can be extremely important. It’s a time to reassure them of the love both parents have for them and sends a message that when it comes to parenting, both parents can set aside their differences and parent them as a parenting unit. To a child, separation or divorce ends their world as they know it. It’s usually devastating, regardless of the circumstances. However, as both parents make a commitment to their children in front of each other that they’ll do their best to NEVER make them feel like a go-between or have to choose one parent over the other, they’ll feel more secure with the coming changes. Statistics show that children who appear 74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2013

to have the most success and least amount of reported trauma stemming from a divorce are those who have a healthy relationship with both parents after the divorce. Relationships are nurtured with quality time spent together and when visits with parents are without fear of offense to the other parent. As each parent encourages their children to love the other parent, they’ll be more open about their true feelings regarding the divorce, new relationships their parents have, and other important family dynamics. Trying to convince a child to withhold their love, time, or attention to a parent causes confusion, guilt, and bitterness. I encourage parents to seek advice from people who have the children’s best interest at heart. Sociologists are always a good resource. Sometimes we take advice from friends, who have a hard time discerning between their loyalty to us and what’s really best. Here are other things to consider: » Having consistent rules between both houses is very beneficial for the children. Rules should stay as they were when both parents lived together. » Never allow a child to hear one parent speaking negatively about the other parent.

When that happens, they feel hurt and betrayal by even being privy to the conversation. » Stop asking. Quizzing a child regarding what they did, who they did it with, etc. regarding their visit with the other parent is crossing the line of abuse in my opinion. This makes them extremely uncomfortable, causes increased stress, and can cause them to shut down and become withdrawn as a defensive mechanism. Let’s make sure we don’t cause any child one more ounce of stress, pain, and hurt than is already caused by the loss of the life as they knew it. Encourage them to love their parents. Be happy when they have a happy, healthy relationship with each parent. Allow them to love, uninhibited, so they’re secure with our dedication to their happiness.

ave you always

wanted to rid yourself of your “love handles” or “muffin tops” peeking out over the top of your pants? In your busy schedule, it can be hard to find time to keep up a fitness routine. Whether you exercise a little, a lot, or not at all, you want to look your best. Sometimes diet and exercise are just not enough to get the shape you want. When you can’t seem to get rid of that last little bit of fat from your waistline, the new Liposonix treatment can help. Liposonix is exclusively available in the Knoxville area at Southeastern Dermatology Consultants. “Liposonix is a revolutionary, non-surgical solution for people who are close to their ideal shape but have stubborn areas of fat that just won’t go away no matter how much they exercise or diet,” says Dr. Doppelt. “The procedure is completed in just one office visit and takes about one hour. With little to no downtime or aftercare, you can resume your active lifestyle right away. While individual

results can vary, patients typically achieve a Matthew B. Doppelt, D.O. waistline reduction of approximately one to two Board Certified inches (equivalent to one Dermatologist pant or dress size) within 8-12 weeks after receiving a single treatment.” The Liposonix system technology from Solta Medical, a global leader in the medical aesthetics market, was developed over a period of 10 years by leading scientists and ultrasound experts with more than 200 years of combined experience in the field of therapeutic and diagnostic ultrasound devices. It works by focusing ultrasound energy below the surface of the skin in order to heat only targeted fat tissue – similar to how light from the sun can be focused with a magnifying glass to create heat. The treated fat is removed through the body’s natural healing process, leaving the patient with a thinner, more contoured waistline. Patients typically resume normal

activities immediately after the Liposonix procedure, and no special diet or exercise program is required in order to achieve results. Clinical studies of more than 200 patients, conducted using the Liposonix system, showed an average waist circumference reduction of one to two inches 12 weeks after a single Liposonix treatment. “Patients are very happy with Liposonix, because it delivers results without the risks typically associated with surgical fat reduction procedures,” says Dr. Doppelt. “It is not liposuction or surgery, is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle and exercise, and is not a way to lose weight. It is a quick, easy, non-invasive way to help patients slim that last inch and hit their personal shape goals.” For more information on Liposonix and to discover how to look as good as you feel – without surgery – call Southeastern Dermatology Consultants today at 865-474-8800. We would also like to invite you to our Liposonix “Thinner Dinner Party” open house on Thursday, March 7. Space is limited, so call and RSVP today.
