F T E R OU R recent snowmageddon, I am excited to be heading up to the Smoky Mountains for a “girls weekend” with a couple of friends. Our history of getaways began while our kids were still toddlers and most of us belonged to the same mom’s group. That group understood how important a change of scenery was for the soul of a busy mom, and we never missed the opportunity to unplug, mentally and emotionally “refuel,” and just enjoy each other’s company and camaraderie. There is a lot of power in “same boat”edness! We all met at church in the mid 1990s, and our kids have essentially grown up together. Throughout the years, they have had playdates, been Boy Scouts, ridden horses, gone to youth group, and had their own friendship trip adventures. As time has passed and our children have become adults, we have commemorated birthdays, led ministries, celebrated milestones, Photo by Morgan Hayley Harper

battled emotional unrest, hosted showers, traveled for weddings, and now welcomed the first grand baby. That is a lot of life! Admittedly, I really hadn’t foreseen having these longtime friendships since I moved around so much when I was a growing up. After living in Knoxville for more than 30 years, it is truly comforting to be around women who have known you since your nursing bra days, and I am sincerely thankful that I have these friends in my life! So this weekend, we will again step away from our regular patterns and activities to reconnect with each other. Our game plan mostly involves chatting, reading books (and magazines!), chatting, going outlet shopping, chatting, walking a trail or two, chatting, eating snacks, chatting, and probably chatting. It is really wonderful to have those people in your life that you can just relax, chill out, and be yourself around. Let the unwinding begin!

At the same time we were expanding with them, we were also building our K&P Remodeling brand, and the business continued to grow at a very fast pace! Pattie and I have created systems for all aspects of our business, streamlining our business model in order to be able to add new products and new territories very easily. E TEND to not get a lot of snow here in Knoxville (understatement!), so if your friends and family are longing for more of the white stuff, here are a few ideas of where to make that happen. Whether it’s a day trip or an extended stay away, going towards winter weather creates a break from the ordinary and makes space for new activities and experiences. Taking your traveling companions to snow is an adventure within itself. We have all seen kids play in the smallest, slightest bit of snow available, so how fun would unstructured time with an accumulation of snow be? Snow angels, building snowmen and forts, throwing snowballs - let your inner child have some fun! Ski resorts are specifically set up to provide wonderful vacations for their patrons. Most are open through mid-March and are worthwhile destinations even if you are not a skier! The resort lovely settings are fun for everyone in your party by offering other activities in addition to winter sports. So whether you are someone who has snow skied before or are just interested in trying it out, or someone who simply enjoys hanging out by a warm fire with an awesome view, a ski resort may just fit the bill. There are also many private rentals available in snowy locations. Check for accommodations like Airbnbs, Vrbos, and quaint hotels the area you are interested in visiting to see what best suits you and your traveling partners. Maybe a fireplace and a large room with bunkbeds for the kids? Or a gorgeous view of the slopes from an outside deck? Let’s start with the clothing essentials for winter play: • Dress everyone in layers so clothing can be added or removed as needed • Thermal underwear (top and bottom) is highly recommended for wicking moisture to keep you more comfortable • Wear waterproof pants and a windproof/ waterproof coat • Waterproof gloves or mittens are also a

must, as staying dry is key for playing in the snow • Avoid cotton fabric, as it tends to get wet and stay wet • Quality sunglasses and/or goggles are also a good idea • Use sunscreen on face and neck that are exposed, as snow really reflects the sun Now that everyone is suited up for a day at play, let’s find something to do: Skiing and Snowboarding Taking to the slopes - whether a seasoned skier or snowboarder or an absolute beginner - is fantastic exercise that becomes more enjoyable as you practice. First time or seldom skiers/snowboarders are encouraged to take lessons at their destination. Learning the basics or having a refresher course (stopping, being an important skill!) will keep you and those around you safer. Skiing is a sport that can begin at just about any age, with resorts set up for the novice, as well as the experienced, to enjoy their time and efforts. Most include graduated areas beginning with flatter, smooth trails for beginners so everyone can enjoy improving at their own pace. So if burning a few calories and beating the winter blues are an important part of your vacation agenda, then skiing and snowboarding are an excellent choice. Snow Tubing For those who want the fun of traveling down the side of a mountain without as much effort, there is always snow tubing. Just hop on the inflated rubber tube and enjoy the ride! This activity is great for all ages (most have a height or age restriction, so check before you go), and many resorts also include a “magic carpet” to return you to the top of the run - yay! Tubing with friends and family is really fun with laughs to spare! Most vacation resorts have snow tubing areas or one located nearby, and some are set up exclusively for tubing. Outdoor Strolls and Hiking Maybe walking in a winter wonderland is more of your speed - just being out in nature and taking in the fresh air can be
exhilarating and a welcome respite from the busyness of everyday life. Cooler temperatures make it easier to enjoy a short hike where leafless trees don’t block the views of sunrises and sunsets. Appreciate the quiet beauty, marvel at the snow laden trees, and practice your winter photography. Surreal landscapes, frozen waterfalls, and friends with pink cheeks and noses all make excellent subjects to create lasting memories of your trip. Relaxing Many resorts, vacation areas, and lodges have indoor heated pools, hot tubs, and/ or spa services - the perfect way to warm up and relax after a fun day in the winter weather. Treat yourself to a massage or facial as a break from outside activities - or instead of them! Snow on the ground is an undeniable excuse to cozy up to a warm fire with a steaming mug of your favorite beverage! It could be a shared fireplace in a lodge, an outdoor fire pit, or the cozy one in your rental cabin. Your “ski” vacation could very well be simply enjoying the snow-covered views from the window next to the fireplace with a good book - aaaahh! Find Your Winter Wonderland Remember, even if you’re not a skier, you can still enjoy the ambiance of snow covered mountains and plenty of winter activities: Shopping, ice skating, relaxing, meeting new people, sitting fireside, re-connecting with family, snowshoeing, catching up with friends, playing in the snow, and so much more.

UESTION: WHAT is the difference is between a cover band and a tribute band? According to David Lowery (head of Heartbreaker: America’s Tribute to Pat Benatar), the answer is, “A cover band is a band that gets together and... you can get away with playing it (a popular band’s songs) however you want. They’re not held to the same standard as a tribute band. When you go to see a tribute band, you’re expecting to really relive some of that nostalgia. So, you’re expecting them to look like that band, expecting them to sound like that band, expecting them to nail the song parts like that band. “Our tribute band, Heartbreaker: America’s Tribute to Pat Benatar, is different in the sense that we really try to capture the live aspect of what Pat brings to her shows. We do the album song versions with a couple exceptions. But if you’ve ever seen Pat live, you know they improvise a lot. They hardly ever play the album version of a song. Neil Giraldo is constantly making up new guitar parts, playing solos differently.” But does their “Pat Benatar” sound like the real deal live? David says, “Missy, our lead singer, nails Pat Benatar - the way she sounds. She has really captured the essence of Pat and just kills it, and she’s one of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever been with. So, they’re gonna see an authentic sounding Pat Benatar when they come to see our show and not just a woman who can hit the notes. I think that’s one of the defining things that separates us, we really do strive for the accuracy of the song itself. But we also have somebody who literally sounds like Pat Benatar. Missy really does sound like Pat. So, I got really lucky when I found her.” As for who plays Neal “Spyder” Girardo (Pat Benatar’s guitarist husband)? David Lowery. Classically trained, David’s musical pedigree includes playing in touring bands around the world, earning the respect of none other than legendary R&B singer, Bobby Bland. David even worked for Prince. Yes. That “Prince.” David’s reputation for painstaking perfection at whatever he pursues is evident when he plays Girardo’s parts. Heartbreaker: America’s Tribute to Pat Benatar is performing at Knoxville’s Open Chord on March 30th. Tickets are still available but are selling quickly.

Switchgrass Will Break Down Explosives
HE UNIVERSITY of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) researchers have received a $12 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract to bioengineer plant-microbe communities that will clean soil contaminated by the explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) and report when it is no longer present. The four-year project is part of DARPA’s Ceres program to develop novel solutions to remediate contaminated soil without the high costs of traditional cleaning processes. For 60 years, DARPA has been working with innovators inside and outside of government on revolutionary concepts to make seeming impossibilities into practical capabilities. Researchers will bioengineer switchgrass, a plant species native to North America, to work harmoniously as “beacons” and “cleaners.” Beacons will serve as a reliable indicator of TNT in the soil, the plant turning red when it is present and green when the soil is no longer contaminated. Cleaners will physically break down explosives, restoring damaged ecosystems without extensive involvement by on-site personnel. Both plant-microbe communities will be developed to have an increased resistance to toxic materials

secreted by explosives, as well as genetic traits limiting reproduction for easier removal following the remediation process. The project’s plant research will be conducted at the UT Center for Agricultural Synthetic Biology (CASB) by a team led by its co-directors Neal Stewart and Scott Lenaghan. Professor Jennifer DeBruyn will also lead a team to perform microbial ecology research studying interactions within different contaminated environments. The microbial synthetic biology research will be performed by teams at MIT and PSU, who will be working to genetically engineer microbes to possess the traits necessary to report and eliminate explosives. Neal Stewart, the project lead, says that switchgrass already has an expansive root
system required to cover polluted areas and is a widely adaptable perennial grass that should work in a range of ecosystems. “Because plants are self-sustaining and do not require maintenance or mechanical parts, they will provide a safe way to restore damaged environments and previously uninhabitable areas without expensive equipment or prolonged human involvement,” he said. “We are excited to see the positive impact this new project will have across the world,” said Scott Lenaghan, co-lead of the project. “To many people, thinking of plants as functional, effective tools that can enhance our safety is like something out of science fiction. But by using existing plant biological traits and their relationship with soil-based microbes, we can develop plant communities that benefit us in ways we never thought possible.” The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture is comprised of the Herbert College of Agriculture, UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch, and UT Extension. O R E T H A N 3 0 years ago, Emerald Avenue United Methodist Church star ted a summer program to reach out to young people in Knoxville’s Oakwood/Lincoln Park neighborhood. This ministry grew to b e come Emer ald Youth Foundation, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit with the ambitious vision of making Knoxville a city where every child in ever y neighborhood can lead a full life. “I have come that they might have life and have it to the fullest.” - John 10:10b “Our mission is to raise up a large number of urban youth to love Jesus Christ and to help renew their communities,” said John Crooks, Emerald Youth’s Director of Marketing & Communications. John also provided some background information on the history of the ministry. “Steve Diggs, who’s our president and CEO, was hired as their [Emerald Ave UMC’s] summer intern, right out of college. It literally started with a kickball game in the church parking lot, asking neighborhood kids to play.” The church decided to expand the
program beyond that summer session because Steve and the church leadership could see how God was working. “They made a commitment and stuck to it,” said John. “That was in the summer of 1988, and three years later, Emerald Youth Foundation was officially launched.” From that initial summer outreach, Emerald Youth has grown to work with even more young people in Knoxville, mainly in inner-city neighborhoods. According to their website (EmeraldYouth. org), Emerald Youth has served more than 30,000 young people in Knoxville during the past 32+ years. Along with churches and other faith-based groups, Emerald Youth works with nearly 3,000 children, teens, and young adults in year-round programs. “We are a faith-based Christian ministry that is at the core of what we do,” said John. “The primary outcome areas that we focus on are faith, learning, and health. We like to say that relationships are wrapped up into all of those.”

Faith JustLead is Emerald Youth’s K-12 urban youth ministry that connects children (and their families) to neighborhood churches and other faith-based communities. They provide children with after-school care in safe spaces where they can learn more about God’s love, be discipled, and get help with homework. They also have snacks, play games, go on field trips, and participate in community service and local missional opportunities.
Learning
Emerald Youth’s Calling & Career ministry is another way to help ensure city young people succeed academically, offering four learning center locations for teens in grades 8-12. This program provides students with access to technology and tutoring, and they can get help with college and financial aid applications, learning life skills, and opportunities to learn about different career options.
Health The Sports ministry is an essential part of the health portion of Emerald Youth’s mission. Emerald Youth is a community ministry partner with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), working together to help Knoxville’s young people play, be active, and learn leadership skills. Program experience levels range from beginner to competitive, and all levels are welcome. Led by trained staff and volunteers who strive to teach young people about good sportsmanship and how to have healthy food and
exercise habits in a God-honoring environment, Emerald Youth sports programs are also affordable. The year-round program of leagues, teams, and clinics includes the following programs: • Baseball • Basketball • Performance Training (weights and conditioning) • Soccer • Softball • Swimming • Volleyball • Track & Field • Wrestling John noted that the sports programs are essentially year-round and added, “We are recruiting volunteers to serve in the organization in different ways. The great thing about Blue Ridge Yoga is that it is centered around what works best for you, and there is no pressure to be “the best.” The instructors reinforce this concept and are always encouraging you to challenge yourself but not to the point of pain or discomfort. studio! My passion is health and wellness, and I am proud to say I am alcohol free for three years and plant based for two. I just recently got into juicing and love it! Using Your Time in the Wilderness Rushing through the wilderness phases of our lives places us at risk for missing out on the reflection and contemplation required to answer life’s most important questions. BY D R . J I M B A I L E Y
R
E C E N T LY, I M E T w i t h a prospective client who was uncertain whether working with me would provide the answers she was seeking. A series of dif ficult events had collided like a perfect storm in her life, and she was struggling to get her bearings. She began by telling me she was uncertain whether she was doing the type of work she was made for but went further to explain that much of her life felt uncomfortable or unfamiliar. While most of the larger things she usually used to introduce herself to strangers were unchanged - happily married, two children, with the same company for several years she still felt a bit “lost” in her own life. Feeling lost or disoriented is something every human being experiences, though most of us never sum up the courage to ask someone if she or he has felt that way. At some point, everyone goes through a
32 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE February 2024
time where they feel lost or in-between. Because I like to hike in remote places and have occasionally wandered off the wellmarked trail, I refer to these times as “being in the wilderness.” It’s not that you’re fully lost, but you aren’t in a place that feels emotionally familiar or “safe” either. Some people experience being in the wilderness as disorienting, very uncomfortable, or even frightening. Our lives are not what they once were, with all our familiar ways of thinking about things, nor are we at the “next” place, where the new ways and patterns of our lives are part of our daily routines. We are in-between. Being immersed in a world of instant gratification we long for instant relief. An author once described being in the wilderness or in-between as being like a trapeze artist, where we have let go of the trapeze bar and are now in mid-air and not yet been grasped by the “catcher” on the other side. We’re disconnected from one certainty but not yet connected with the next certainty,
so we float, vulnerable, between the two places. We grasp, sometimes frantically, for the bar of certainty that floats just beyond our vision or reach. But the tension we feel when we’re in the wilderness can provide something that’s essential for our personal growth and development - the impetus to ask the right questions. While all human beings seek security and comfort, being secure and comfortable isn’t a good formula for personal growth - just as unplowed soil isn’t likely to yield an abundant crop. Wilderness forces us to dig and ask deeper questions that often have life-changing answers. I sometimes have my clients who feel lost in the wilderness write down the more unsettling feelings and questions they’re experiencing. They often return with things like: “Why does my work feel pointless?” “Why are my relationships unfulfilling?” “What’s missing from my life?” or “Am I who I want to be?” All are profound existential questions that every person might experience but would only seek to answer if their present situation is uncomfortable, unsettled, or painful. As a career coach, I recognize that our careers or, more specifically, our vocations are only one piece of a larger quilt that makes up our identities - who we are. And it’s who we are that should, to a large degree, determine what we choose to do with our lives. Being in the wilderness will probably never be comfortable for an average person. But our time in the wilderness offers us opportunities to explore and identify in better detail where we want to go, what we want to accomplish, and what the essential qualities or characteristics we want in our lives will be when we “arrive” at our next place. Rushing through the wilderness phases of our lives places us at risk for missing out on the reflection and contemplation required to answer life’s most important questions. In many ways, the wilderness is a gift given to the person who wants to be wise about taking the next steps in their career or life path. I’ve walked beside many clients and friends who are experiencing time in the wilderness. Having been there a few (too many?) times myself, I’m familiar with the terrain and the trail markers that you must experience to recognize. MAGINE BEING 12 years old and having the guitar chops good enough to open for blues legend B.B. King not once. Not twice. But approximately 20 shows! That is not imagining anything. That is exactly what happened with blues guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa. One only needs to visit the blues rock titan’s website, JBonamassa.com, to see all that the guitar prodigy has built during his 30+ year career. The site is proof that Joe has built a career and business empire that not only encompasses 30+ albums and DVDs, but is the envy of the rock and blues world. The first thing the visitor will notice on the well-crafted site are the worldwide tour dates that make up his 200-days-per-year tour schedule and the links to purchasing tickets to those shows. During past tours, Joe has performed with some of the biggest names in blues and rock and roll such as Eric Clapton, Dion, Jethro Tull, and others. You’ll also notice Joe’s own record label, KTBA (“Keeping the Blues Alive”) Records, where legendary artists such as Dave

Joe will be in concert at Knoxville’s Civic Auditorium on March 5th. In support of that show, he chatted with Boomerocity for Everything Knoxville about what Knoxville fans can expect from his upcoming show, which will be an extension of his newly redone fall shows. “Well, I mean, we’ll be touring Blues Deluxe Vol. 2 (Joe’s latest release) at that point. I’m just looking forward to coming back to Knoxville. It’s always a fun... fun town. Great crowds as always, and great food. I didn’t realize Knoxville was such a food town until we had a day off there one time and found myself downtown and said, ‘This is a pretty good food town!’” Since the show will feature a lot of the music
from Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2, Joe talked about the volume two concept and how it came about. “I’m proud of it. I’m proud of the way it came out and proud of the way we looked at it, you know, my career and the 20th anniversary of the first one (Blues Deluxe). And so, you know, we’ve dug deep, challenged ourselves, and went into the studio and asked the question, ‘Well now, am I a better singer now than I was?’ I don’t know - and I didn’t know the answer going in. And then the other thing was, ‘Am I a better, you know, guitar player than I was?’ And the answer was, I didn’t know. I’m proud of it, you know, given the fact that I was 25 when I did the first one.” The interview also covered how he managed creating during the pandemic shutdown (including a full, streamed concert in an empty Ryman Auditorium) and time zones. He even had a bone to pick with Rolling Stone magazine. HE MAGNIFICENT Tennessee Theatre first opened its doors on October 1, 1928, and was hailed as “the South’s most beautiful theatre.” When the first patrons stepped inside downtown’s “movie palace” to see their favorite stars on the silver screen, they paid only 40 cents for matinees and 60 cents for evening shows. (Children paid only 10 and 15 cents.) Designed by Chicago architects Graven & Mayger, the theatre has a Spanish-Moorish style interior that incorporates elements from all parts of the world: Czechoslovakian crystals in the Frenchstyle chandeliers, Italian terrazzo flooring in the Grand Lobby, and Asian influences in the carpet and drapery patterns. It was one of the first public places in Knoxville to have air conditioning. Its 95-year history includes highs and lows, from when movies reigned as the chosen form of entertainment to the decline and uncertain future of downtown. Periodic closings in the late 1970s gave way to glimpses of a brighter outlook when the theatre was purchased in 1981 by James A. Dick. The theatre then began its gradual shift in programming from a single-screen movie theater to a multi-use performing arts venue, which prolonged its existence but exaggerated its many shortcomings. In 1996, the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation, a nonprofit organization, was founded with the purpose of preserving, maintaining, and operating the theatre. The foundation’s board of directors was responsible for overseeing and raising funds for restoration and renovation of the building, which began in June 2003. The former movie palace reopened on January 15, 2005, as a world-class performing arts center - the result of a $30 million renovation and restoration project funded through public and private donations. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and honored as the Official State Theatre of Tennessee, today’s Tennessee Theatre has something for everyone: classical music, vintage films, dance, Broadway, and stellar performances by today’s hottest musicians and yesterday’s favorites. Local arts organizations such as the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Knoxville Opera use the Tennessee Theatre throughout the year. The Tennessee Theatre has a full-time operations staff of 21, hundreds of parttime staff, and uses Knoxville-based employees of Live Nation for booking and marketing its concerts and Broadway productions. S WE BEGIN settling into the new year amid the doldrums of winter, now is the time serious gardeners anticipate spring - when the days get longer and the garden will once again regain its color. With so many annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees blooming in spring and grabbing our attention, don’t overlook the American fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus). Not to be confused with the Chinese fringetree (Chionanthus retusus), this elegant native tree with its beautiful, white, fleecy flowers blooms mid to late spring. The flower clusters are said to resemble an old man’s beard, which appropriately enough is another common name for this species.

An American fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus) shines in all its spring glory at the UT Gardens, Jackson. This native tree is a showy plant in spring, transitions to a graceful green presence when leaves emerge, and female fringetree even provide fruit for birds.
The radiant white glow of the flowers is soon joined by the emergence of rich green, elliptical leaves that grow to three to eight inches each and become more prominent as the flowers fade away. It’s a beautiful transition that is well suited for summer greenery in parks and gardens. Plants are either male or female. The female produces dark blue 1/2-inch to 2/3-inch olive shaped fruits that birds relish. Because most American fringetrees on the market are grown from seed and sold before maturity, the best chance of getting fruit, if desired, is to plant four or more. If having only flowers is the goal, there are a few male cultivars available, but these can be difficult to find. This tree can be grown as a shrub or, if pruned correctly, a gracefully handsome tree. It can grow up to 20 feet with beautiful light gray bark that looks amazing contrasted with its spring canopy. Because of its relatively small size, fringetree is an ideal choice for

a specimen plant in urban or suburban landscape or for use in parking lots or other confined areas. American fringetree prefers deep, rich acidic soils but is tolerant of drought and shade, so it can be grown in many different environments. It is also tolerant of most pests and diseases, although recently there are signs pointing to issues with ambrosia beetle. Fortunately, it seems to still be putting up the good fight! If you’re interested in seeing this showstopper, visit the University of Tennessee Gardens in Knoxville or Jackson. In Knoxville, you can see fringetree in the garden and growing in parking lot islands. Jackson has a collection of nine different cultivars representing both American and Chinese species growing on the south side of the office building. They are all thriving and are well maintained. If you desire one for your own garden, you won’t be disappointed! Feel free to stop by any time with questions about the American fringetree! to your winter rollercoaster! Please fasten your seatbelts and keep arms and legs inside the car at all times. I’m writing this in January and watching it snow heavily. We have some very cold temperatures in the upcoming week but then are back to more moderate weather. Will we go up and down again? Probably. Here are some pointers: First of all, don’t panic. The damage caused in December 2022 was from the speed of the change, not the cold. This year has more typical average cold temperatures, and plants have had time to prepare. Plants at risk are those planted in the last few months, plants that bloom in spring, plants in containers, and those that are not zone hardy. So how do you prepare for cold spells? • Water heavily. You never want roots to freeze while dry. • Mulch more heavily. If you have the recommended three inches, pull more over to cover the root ball. Spread it back out in the spring. • Single digits or below freezing for more than 24 hours? Make a tent over vulnerable plants with a fabric covering (sheets, blankets, burlap, etc.) anchored to the ground to hold in warmth. Remember that snow is an excellent “blanket" if it isn’t heavy enough to break branches! There are experts who agree with this advice and experts who say it’s pointless, so don’t feel too guilty if you don’t cover anything. If some of your plants look a little rough at the end of winter, don’t rush to “fix" them. Wait until everything starts growing in the spring and re-evaluate. Many folks rushed to replace “dead" plants last spring that would have come back nicely if given time. The vast majority will recover, even if they lost their leaves. Now let’s get back to our regular to-do list. • Go out and walk around in your yard to see what’s going on (after it warms up a bit of course). Remember to look up, down, and all around. Look up at tree branches to see if you have sparse canopies, broken or damaged branches, loose bark, woodpecker holes, or mushrooms. Look down for weeds, mole tunnels, vole holes, or shallow holes where possums, skunks, or raccoons are digging for grubs. Look all around your shrubs and perennials to see what needs to be pruned, fertilized, moved, removed, or treated. If you have questions about what you find, please call us or stop by.
• Let’s talk about pruning, because this is the task that gets folks in the most trouble. February is a good time to prune summer blooming deciduous shrubs and broadleaf evergreens. Remember that you’re performing surgery on a living thing. Do research before you start. Every year we have folks who do grave and, in some cases, irreparable harm to their plants, so please don’t be one of them! • Clean out your beds - this is a great time to cut out the privet, honeysuckle, and wild grapevines that hide in your shrubs. You can also vent some frustration by pulling weeds, saving some work later on in the spring. • A 3" layer of mulch on gardens and flower beds keeps the temperature and soil moisture levels more stable. Remember to make donuts and not volcanoes around trees. Piling mulch around the trunk damages it. • February is a good time to get your beds ready for planting. Work leaf mold, aged manure, and compost into the soil. Adding amendments now gives them time to break down so they’re available to your plants. • Are you doing a vegetable garden? It should be warm enough to sow greens,
lettuce, peas, radishes, and onions by the end of February. If you have a cold frame, start cold weather veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. • Indoor plants can also use a little love this time of year. Check them for diseases and insects, and make notes about which ones need to be up-potted or divided at the end of February or early March. I give my smaller plants a shower in the sink to rinse off the dust and use a cloth or Swiffer to clean the larger plants. It’s also time to resume fertilizing if you took a break while they were dormant. I prefer to use an organic product like Espoma on a biweekly basis. • Don’t forget the birds. They have a hard time in the cold and appreciate a full, clean feeder and water that isn’t frozen. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both Steve Griffin emerging and established artists working in a variety of media such as wood, photography, oil, glass, fiber, paper, and more. About the exhibition juror: Sisavanh Phouthavong Houghton is a Lao American interdisciplinary visual artist and Painting Professor at Middle Tennessee State University. Everything Fades presents a poetic narrative in my own life. I enjoy how photographs abstractly tied to my own memories may also address collective ideas of change, home, and loss. Keith Bryant: The Machinations of Sprockets and Wood in the Atrium Artist statement: Drawing upon my training as a glass blower, wood worker, and bicycle mechanic, I combine skills from seemingly disparate disciplines to create multi-media sculptures out of layered wood, glass, bike parts, family heirlooms, and found objects. Through my art, I seek to make a positive environmental impact by upcycling discarded bicycle parts and other items to give them a new purpose and keep them out of landfills. As an avid mountain biker, I spend a lot of time outdoors and draw inspiration from nature. Through my art, I combine my admiration for both the mechanical and natural. In my work, I blend and balance natural and fabricated elements, showing how each has function and beauty both individually and collectively. Genna Sellers: Courting Doubt on the North Wall Artist statement: Using everyday items such as paper and plastic, my photographs explore the liminal space between what is real, what is simulated, and what is imagined. My work explores the tension between representation and abstraction, hoping to provoke deeper questions about the nature of perceived reality, inviting the viewer to ask if an image is real, surreal, or even a simulation. I strive to create evocative visuals that move my audience into a space of meditation and reflection, one that encourages an understanding of the complexities of reality. Kacey Noel Chumley: The Midnight Studies in the Display Case Artist statement: As my infatuation with painting grew, the notion of colors became much more prominent in what I painted. I loved taking influence from both realism and surrealism. This exhibition aims to simply display the long hours of practice I put into painting and to show the slow progress of becoming more solid at my craft. I hope this series of paintings brings joy to the people who see it, just as it has brought joy to me to create them. The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm, Friday from 9 am to 7 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. WAS visiting college friends in Nashville during the summer and was parallel parked in the street in front of my friend’s house as usual. A guy in an older model (i.e. metal!) automobile drove down the street and side swiped three cars - one of them being mine! I was furious, as he didn’t even stop (a neighbor has the incident recorded on her Ring) and I could see that there was obvious damage to the street side of the bumper on my 2015 Hyundai Elantra.
After graduating from the University of Tennessee, I went to graduate school for Occupational Therapy at GA State University in downtown Atlanta. My parents upgraded my college 2007 Hyundai Tucson for my dad’s newer car as a safer, more reliable option for navigating the many roadways in Atlanta - and now it was dented and smashed on one side! I honestly thought the damage was only cosmetic, but after bringing it to Local Guys Collision in Bearden, I was informed that the damage was more “structural” than I had realized, making my bumper unsafe if a collision were to happen - not good! Ken and his crew were able to order the appropriate factory-approved parts for the repair. I also had them do the brakes since I use them quite a bit in Atlanta traffic. The repair was so much faster than I had anticipated! And I knew that only safe, reliable parts were used in my repair. The Elantra looked like a new car when I got it back - everything repaired, all shiny and cleaned up. I trusted these guys, and they delivered! I am a 20-something to whom they could have given the “run around,” but they were honest, straight forward about costs, and were intentionally concerned about my safety - wow! My parents and I would highly recommend Ken and April at Local Guys Collision for their know-how, experience, and integrity. Seriously, who could ask for more?
