O N E to keep my Christmas tree up at least into February, as it takes me so long to decorate the house and I like to enjoy all the trimmings for longer than just a few weeks. But with the coming of February, it is now time for me to put all the glitz and glitter away until the end of this year and to start thinking about spring. January Photo by D. Roberts Photography has been fairly mild so far, and I hope that means that spring will follow quickly. Thank goodness winter does not last long in East Tennessee. In honor of Valentine’s Day this month, we want to highlight not only gifts that will make your Valentine feel special, but we want to highlight events and activities that can be enjoyed. Whether you are looking for a gift that pampers like a day at the spa, something that sparkles and glitters, or a special sweet treat, we invite you to check out

all the possibilities inside our February edition. You will be sure to find the perfect gift that your special someone will cherish long after February 14th. If you are in the habit of sending or giving a written Valentine message, I encourage you to do that especially in this digital age where letters and cards are not used as often. I know the cards I have received from my husband mean a lot to me, because I know he took the time to read the messages to find just the right one that conveys what he feels. Also, I know parents cherish those Valentine cards that are handmade by their children like my parents did. My dad kept those cards, and they were more precious than gold. I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with joy, and from all of us at Everything Knoxville, we wish all of you a very happy Valentine’s Day!

Scott Hawkins of TN Urology Associates, Yvonne Malewski, Driven Technologies Technology Consultant, and Tracy Dennis of Driven Technologies

W

HEN TENNESSEE Urology Associates IT

Manager/Compliance Officer, Scott Hawkins, undertook the challenge of identifying a new IT managed service provider, little did he know that his investigation would lead him to Driven Technologies, a sister company of Chattanooga-based MSA Digital, which was founded in 1974 solely as a copy machine sales and servicing dealer. Having recently relocated from Indianapolis, Scott was unfamiliar with the area’s managed service providers. But after interviewing a number of providers, he found himself intrigued with Driven Technologies. Although smaller than other providers, Driven Technologies appeared both more agile and responsive to the growing computer network requirements. Tasked with the responsibility of maintaining a network system that

supported a large staff of medical care providers in seven separate offices, Driven Technologies has exceeded the expectations of Scott and Tennessee Urology Associates’ many users. Cost-effective, secure, and predictably reliable, Driven Technologies proved to be the ideal solution for Tennessee Urology Associates. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, We are pleased to provide this interview with MSA Digital’s Knoxville-based Technology Consultant, Yvonne Malewski. EK: Tell our readers just what a managed service provider is and what critical services they provide. Yvonne: From individualized services to full-scale managed solutions, Driven Technologies helps businesses manage their technologies better and more efficiently. With a truly holistic approach to partnership, we’ve built our company on keeping the business goals of our customers

in mind while constantly adding value through all phases of projects and across all major technology verticals. This can range from your one-person operation to 1,000+ employees. EK: Some businesses with larger networks, often spanning multiple locations, rely on their own internal resources to provide these computer network services. Describe the recent trend for a growing number of companies to outsource these responsibilities to an independent managed service provider like Driven Technologies. Yvonne: We are definitely seeing a trend in IT now towards innovation, utilizing various tools and alternative strategies such as cloud and managed services. The cloud can be utilized for many things, including application as a service and data center/network resources. Managed services can be utilized to support and augment the existing IT organization and, in some cases, provide additional cost savings. The reasons for the shift towards managed services specifically starts with a simple question: Can we benefit from IT support provided by individuals located outside of our organization, and if so, is there a cost benefit to doing this as well? That’s a great question, but to frame it properly, let’s first talk about what business trends are pushing IT employees and how IT staff is facilitating the trend. Uber, the world’s largest taxi service, doesn’t own any taxis. Airbnb, the world’s largest hospitality group, doesn’t own a single hotel. Facebook, the world’s most popular media owner, doesn’t create content, and Alibaba, the most valuable retailer, has no inventory. These innovations are fantastic and create new opportunities for organizations to go to market and engage with their customers in many new and exciting ways. Technology innovations are also allowing organizations to conduct business internally in new ways, as well allowing 61% of the work force today to work remotely. Providing mobility on campus through ubiquitous wireless coverage and allowing individuals to bring their own devices to work are now expected by employees, guests, and contractors. So how are IT organizations keeping pace with supporting far more devices, providing access to more robust applications, preparing for disaster recovery and back-up solutions, and defending against cyber threats, all while being asked to reduce cost? The answer is difficult and unique to each organization and requires many things, including additional training and research, use of centralized management tools, improved network and data center design and architecture, use of automation, and a great support structure. The problem is that in smaller organizations (a couple of hundred desktops or less), you’re talking about a one to three man IT shop where each person wears many hats and is already maxed out in time and day-to-day

responsibilities. Where are they going to get the time to learn all of these new skills, where’s the budget for all of the new tools and classes, and what happens if one of these key employees gets frustrated and leaves, taking their knowledge about the environment with them? Filling that gap and losing that knowledge base can be detrimental to the business. In many cases, the answer is to partner with a managed services provider to manage a piece of the IT infrastructure so the team can be more strategic and focus on the more difficult and meaningful projects like virtualization, network and data center upgrades, re-architecting the current network or DC for optimization. In other cases, an IT organization might say “we have expertise in some areas like desktop management, network and data center implementation, and support; however, we require assistance in designing and supporting our wireless infrastructure and security.” There is no one answer, as every organization is unique in the skills that they currently have and strategy that they employ, but utilizing an outside service to fill the gaps in personnel where needed can help add additional expertise where needed, provide relief to an already overstressed and overburdened organization, and be a fall back plan for a business and a receptacle for knowledge transfer in the event that they lose a key IT employee. EK: Driven Technologies provides an extensive list of critical services necessary to meet the growing needs placed on your clients’ growing computer networking demands. Describe several of the most important services that you provide. Yvonne: Driven Technologies has a number of services we provide. We classify each in its own Technology Vertical and provide managed service, proactive monitoring, and support, as well as project related services. These range from SECURITY (firewalls, policy, social engineering and penetration testing), DATA CENTER (server storage, disaster recovery, load balancing/application delivery), NEWTORKING (routers, switches, design, SDN/SD-WAN), WIRELESS (AP’s, Per/Post mapping, security configuration), and MANAGED SERVICES (support account all verticals, custom support agreements, patch management). EK: How has the growing public concern for security and privacy, not to mention liability, changed the manner in which you address these issues with your clients? Yvonne: Security is on the top of everyone’s radar these days. Cyber hackers are getting more sophisticated, targeted in their attacks, and professional in their approach every day, and it is very difficult and likely impossible to prevent a well-funded cyber attacker from breaching the walls of their target. If an organization is interested in optimizing

their security dollars and partnering with someone who focuses on security solutions as a whole and not just selling hardware and software to provide security solutions, they will often employ the services of a security based managed services provider. When choosing a managed security provider, it is important to choose one that understands the security lifecycle process, the layered approach necessary to provide optimal security solutions, and one that is able to provide more than just one manufacturer’s security products. EK: With the need to provide routine performance monitoring, preventative maintenance, optimization, and security backup management, it would seem that many businesses might lack the capacity internally to provide these services. Your thoughts? Yvonne: That is correct! We talk to customers all the time that have some or all of the tools to facilitate some or all of these functions but don’t have the time or personnel to provide the care and feeding that these tools require. Sometimes we find that the tools that they have are outdated or were never really installed and integrated properly, so they’ve not been useful to the organization in a meaningful way. In other words, the systems are there, but the human resources required to operate them are not, or vice versa. This is where a managed service partner can provide a tremendous amount of value by delivering a current relevant tool set or personnel to support these needs. EK: What size networks does Driven Technologies support, and how can a company or organization that might have use of your managed services learn more? Yvonne: Driven Technologies provides services to businesses from 20 desktops to Fortune 500 companies. Some of our customers require remote support only, and others require a combination of full-time or part-time on-side support. We provide project related services, managed services, and sell hardware and software solutions to help our organizations achieve their business goals. Driven Technologies can often save a customer a tremendous amount of money, provide additional expertise and support to their current IT team, and facilitate business growth through technical solutions while protecting the organizations from cyber threats and increasing uptime and availability. To learn more, you are encouraged to visit www.driventechmsa.com or contact Yvonne Malewski at Driven Technologies of MSA - Knoxville at 865-323-2459. and set sail to the high seas in a spectacular ballet performance of swinging pirates, mesmerizing mermaids, and clashing swords in The Barbarosa on February 11 and 12 at the Bijou Theatre. The Barbarosa, both dangerous and grandiose, is an insightful look into the life of the legendary pirate Anne Bonny. “Historians don’t really know that much about Anne,” said Lisa Hall McKee, director. “She actually only shows up in history for about three years, yet she is one of the most recognized pirates known today. Act one will explore Anne on her father’s North Carolina plantation. I assume she wreaked havoc everywhere she went on that plantation, which gave us a lot of opportunity for light-hea r ted, play f u l, even comedic choreography. I also assumed she was haunted by her unconventional past. That premise led to darker, emotional works that are heartbreaking and moving.” Act two takes a large turn, with Anne as a pirate on The Barbarosa. Dances with swords, knives, and treasure chests will depict the day-to-day pirate life and include expansive aerial work. “GO! is known for incorporating aerial into our story lines, and this ballet almost demands it to create a realistic, larger than life feel of a pirate ship,” said McKee. “Amidst all the excitement of treasure checking and sword play will also be tragedy and conflict. While she is an exciting historical figure, she is also a tragic figure.” The role of Anne will be danced by Harper Addison, a San Francisco dancer who recently located to Knoxville. “Harper is really absorbing the grit of Anne,” said McKee. “She is lovely and very diverse. She is very dynamic and emotional in this role. Knoxville is going to love her!” GO! Contemporary Dance Works is known for its edgy choreography that extends way beyond the average dance goer. A 501(c)(3) organization, GO! serves its community through outreach and partnerships with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Opera, and Knox County Schools, as well as other loca l non-profit organizations. Purchase tickets at www.gocontemporarydance. com or call 865-539-2475. Advance tickets are $27 and $22. At-the-door prices are $30 and $25. There’s a $5 discount for seniors, students, and children. New Exhibition at Biltmore Combines

Literature, Fashion, and Film

“Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics” Opens February 10th

T

H E A R T I S T R Y of great

literary works, costume design, and movie making comes together in “Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics,” Biltmore’s new exhibition premiering in Biltmore House on February 10. Inspired by George Vanderbilt’s love of literature, “Designed for Drama” showcases more than 40 award-winning movie costumes from films based on favorite books in his collection. The exhibition will run through July 4. George Vanderbilt: A well-read man Once termed “one of the best read men in the country” by New York media, Vanderbilt amassed a library of more than 22,000 volumes at his North Carolina home. A reader from an early age, he began at the age of 12 keeping a record of the books he had read, including the title and author of each work. By his death in 1914, Vanderbilt had logged 3,159 books. He also counted leading authors of the era as personal friends, including Henry James, Paul Leicester Ford, and Edith Wharton – all of whom stayed at Biltmore House as guests of George and Edith Vanderbilt. That literary connection is a central theme in the exhibition, with the original books from Vanderbilt’s library that inspired the films accompanying the costumes. This also marks the first time most of the volumes have been displayed to the public. Wide-ranging fashions in Biltmore House The exhibition features elaborate 10

costumes from 14 recent films that bring literary characters to life, from the entertaining detective duo of Holmes and Watson in “Sherlock Holmes” to the creation of the Peter Pan story in “Finding Neverland.” The grand fashions of 19th century Russia are strikingly portrayed in “Anna Karenina,” while the simpler attire of Jane Austen’s characters in “Pride and Prejudice” portrays one of the BBC miniseries’ most memorable scenes. The costumes on display reveal the attention to detail involved in period costume design and represent the work of costume designers at the highest level of their profession, numbering Academy Awards and Emmys among their honors. “We have an exquisite dress that Nicole Kidman wore in ‘The Portrait of a Lady,’” says Leslie Klingner, Biltmore’s curator of interpretation. “It’s black and gold, embroidered with flat sequins correct to the time period. This stunning and spectacular dress comes alive in Biltmore House.” A collaborative effort This is Biltmore’s third costume exhibition, all of which brought together the estate’s Museum Services team and Cosprop Ltd., London, an award-winning costumier that has designed countless fashions for film and television productions around the globe. Work leading up to “Designed for Drama” has involved a new collaboration, this time with Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. Carolyn Jamerson, the institute’s

collections manager and chief mount maker, traveled to Biltmore to create wigs on-site for the costumed mannequins. Jamerson is one of a handful of paper wig designers and makers in the country. While she uses simple tools to construct each wig, the precision and attention to detail results in a life-like yet ethereal effect. The wigs, she says, are meant to provide texture and structure without distracting from the costume. Admission to “Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics” is included with a visit to Biltmore. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.biltmore.com. About Biltmore Located in Asheville, North Carolina, Biltmore was the vision of George W. Vanderbilt. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt, America’s largest home is a 250-room French Renaissance chateau, exhibiting the Vanderbilt family’s original collection of furnishings, art, and antiques. Biltmore estate encompasses more than 8,000 acres, including renowned gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture. Today Biltmore has grown to include Antler Hill Village, which features the award-winning Winery and Antler Hill Farm, The Inn on Biltmore Estate, Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate, Equestrian Center, numerous restaurants, event and meeting venues, and Biltmore For Your Home, the company’s licensed products division. GLENN HUGHES O

NE OF THE BIGGEST

metal/progressive rock bands to dominate the ’70s was Deep Purple. The band has had four different lineups (referred to as Mark I, II, III, or IV) and have reportedly collectively sold more than 100 million LPs globally. The bassist in Mark III and IV was Glenn Hughes who, along with other members of Deep Purple, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. When contacted for comment about Hughes, the hall’s CEO, Greg Harris, said, “An overall thought is what an incredible rock and roll life, and what an incredibly warm and open person. It says a lot to be such a great stage presence in rock and roll, through and through, and having been so well traveled. He relates to people. If you think about his lineage in the bands he was in before Deep Purple itself and then afterward, it’s just amazing. So whether or not you knew the name of the guy playing bass in some of these bands, that unmistakable sound is Glenn Hughes. Not only is Glenn an inductee into the Hall of Fame, but he has also become a member of the Hall of Fame family.” Hughes has also been part of Trapeze, California Breed, Black Sabbath, and supergroup Black Country Communion (with Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham, and Derek Sherinian), along with scores of others during the span of his lengthy career. Hughes has also recorded solo projects of his own. It was 14

for his latest CD, Resonate, that I called him at his home to chat about it. We began by talking about why he titled it Resonate. “Because I wanted to call the album something that meant something to me,” said Hughes. “It’s not very often that I will call an album after a song. I’ve only done it a couple of times. The album title, for me, is about what it means; about how I’m feeling and the recording and the songs. That word, ‘resonate,’ kept popping up in my head, and it spoke to me. So I was happy to call the album Resonate.” When asked what led him to work with the group of guys that he did on Resonate, Hughes said, “Because they’re guys in my live band, and they’re great musicians that I love working with. It’s so important for me to play live with the people I have on the record. Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers has actually been on five of my solo albums, and he’s my best friend. It’s always a pleasure to have him around not only because he’s the greatest rock drummer in my opinion, but he’s a funny, kind, considerate young man. Really amazing.” When asked what song would be Resonate’s calling card, Hughes shared, “It’s so difficult, because they’re all little movies in their own right. But I think when you hear ‘Heavy,’ I mean, it’s got it all in there, you know? But then again, people are saying that about ‘Long Time Gone.’ They’re saying that about ‘God of Money.’ They’re saying that about ‘Let It

Shine,’ and they’re saying it about ‘Flow.’” As for tour plans this year and other career items on his radar, Hughes said, “We’re touring next spring. We will play throughout America in August, coming back in the spring, and we’ll come back again next September. Oh, another album from me that will be recorded late next year. Black Country Communion is making another album in January. Joe Bonamassa is at my home tomorrow. We’re almost done writing that album. Then we go into the studio in January to record that. It’s going to be a very busy year next year for me. I’m very, very busy touring. I like to tour as much as possible. A lot of my friends that are my age have stopped touring or they’re slowing down. But for some reason, my career seems to be picking up some speed, so I’m just going to go with it.” Wrapping up our chat, I asked the legendary bassist how he hoped to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. “I am a messenger,” he said. “That’s what my message is. I continue to be a messenger throughout the last few decades about giving love to people and giving music back and making people feel free. I like to think that my music can heal people and help give people comfort. So, at the end of it, then, I was a messenger – I AM a messenger – and I’m a healer. That’s the most important thing to me – to carry that message.” You can read the expanded version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com.

Tips to Protect Your Devices from

CYBERCRIME Y

O U R S M A R T P H O N E , your tablet,

your computer – they are some of your most important and most used possessions. They are the daily tools you use for research, to connect with others, and make purchases. You take them everywhere and fill them with your important, personal information. And all of that makes them the perfect targets for a cyberattack. The number of cybercrime incidents in the United States grows each year, and as Americans move into an increasingly digital society – thanks to smartphones, smart cars, and smart in-home technologies – cybercrime is expected to grow in frequency again in 2017. Protecting yourself, your family, and the vital information on your devices means increasing your focus on your own cybersecurity. That starts with these five tips.

» Recognize you’re not immune. Cyberattacks increase in frequency and severity every year, so don’t make the mistake of believing it can’t happen to you. It’s important to protect yourself by taking personal responsibility for your data; we can’t expect banks or other institutions to do it for us. We lock our doors and take other security measures to protect our home and car. We need to also take precautions with our personal security and information.

» Don’t store your username, password, or credit card information with a website. The convenience makes it tempting, but websites are a

popular target for cybercriminals, because a successful hack gives them access to hundreds or thousands of files, including yours. Even storing this information on your own computer can expose it in a cyberattack, and if your credit card information is captured, criminals can use it to gather your social security number. That exposes you to identify theft. Keep this information off your devices and, instead, create complex passwords and write down all of your usernames and passwords on a piece of paper that you keep in a safe place, such as a deposit box.

» Use only a credit card, not a debit card, when making online purchases. Using your credit

card instead of your debit card allows you to keep better track of the purchases you have made. It also limits the effects of any possible theft to just the one card instead of several. If you have no choice but to use a debit card for an online purchase, do not use your pin number online.

» If it feels like a trick, it probably is. Cybercriminals often engage in “social engineering” or other non-electronic methods to try and trick you into surrendering your data. If you get a phone call about a banking or credit card issue or if your computer tells you to call a number because it just caught a virus, be cautious. Do not divulge any personal history or credit card details. Hang up or ignore the computer-generated notices and call the customer service number of the institution’s web» Replace your existing credit cards with chip cards as soon site with any questions. as possible. Chip cards are becoming the new normal these days, and if your current credit card does not have a silver square chip on its front, consider replacing it quickly. T

HE PASSAGE of time can catch you offguard – years fly by, and suddenly you realize that your parents might need help when it comes to managing their finances. Whether that time is imminent or somewhere in the unknown future, a critical first step is simply having a conversation with your parents about their Yvonne Marsh, CPA, CFP® finances. Make sure you are covering these topics: » Bill paying: Do they have enough current income to pay their bills, and do they have a process to make sure payments don’t accidentally get missed? This is especially important for annual life insurance or long-term care insurance premiums. Policies they have been paying for years could lapse due to non-payment. » Do they have critical legal documents in place? We all think of a will as important, but do they have a financial power of attorney that will allow someone to act in their place if they are incapacitated? How about a living will and a healthcare power of attorney? » Do they have long-term care insurance that can help pay for their care later in life? It’s good to know what your financial responsibility might be in the future if they haven’t made any long-term care plans. » Are their IRA beneficiary designations up to date? Keep in mind that beneficiary designation forms are the “will” for IRA accounts. Additionally, there are critical tax consequences when IRA accounts are passed to the next generation without properly completed beneficiary forms. » Do you know where their investments and life insurance or long-term care insurance policies are? I have witnessed first-hand how hard it will be for you – as the adult child financial caregiver – if you have to search for this information. » Are accounts titled in such a way that the will would be circumvented? For instance, if your mom has a joint bank account with your sister, your sister will own the entire account at your mom’s passing, no matter what the will says. Talking about money with your parents can be tough, but who knows? They might be waiting for you to start the conversation. Soups for the Soul B Y M I C H E L L E S A M P L E S - N I C O LO S I

T

HERE’S NOTHING better on a cold

winter’s day than to enjoy a bowl of hot soup. Soups can be most convenient because they can become one-pot meals that include grains, vegetables, and beans. Winter cooking offers great opportunity to cook foods longer as a means of energizing our bodies. The longer you cook something, the more heat it creates in the body. That’s a good reason to eat more raw salads in the summer, because eating raw actually cools off the body. Also, adding certain ingredients to soups such as fresh ginger juice, for example, helps to disperse heat in our bodies, producing warmth for those cold winter days. Winter is the best season for being creative with soups and allowing for more versatility in our meals. Using beans as a base is a delightful way to create thick, hearty soups that can warm the body on those cold winter days. Bean based soups typically start with cooking the beans and mashing them with a fork to produce a thick base. Lentils, a New Year’s Day tradition in Italian cuisine, are a great bean to make such a base. They are loaded with healthy protein and other nutrients such as manganese, potassium, selenium, folate, calcium and fiber, which helps to lower LDL, the bad cholesterol. Lentils contribute to lowering blood pressure as well. All in all, lentils are a heart healthy food. Their versatility makes them an excellent choice to provide delicious cuisine. They come in several varieties: Green, red, and French black lentils. Each provides a different taste and texture. Red lentils perhaps make the best bean based soup. Making red lentils first and then adding vegetables like cauliflower and topping with spinach makes a delicious soup. Chickpeas are a staple in the Mediterranean diet. Chickpeas contain significant amounts of fiber, potassium, vitamin K, selenium, folate, vitamin C, and protein. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are extremely important in ensuring that the body functions

properly. Some, known as non-essential amino acids, can be produced by the body when they are needed. Essential amino acids, however, cannot be made in the body and, therefore, must be consumed in the diet. Most non-animal sources of protein, including chickpeas, lack the essential amino acid methionine, while whole grains lack lysine. Combining both whole grains, such as brown rice with chickpeas, produces a complete protein. Chickpeas are another versatile food that allows for creativity. Mashed chickpea can be used as a base for delicious and hearty soups. I also like to use vegetable broths made with leeks to give a “chicken” type flavoring to any soup. Simply make the broth by adding the green part of leeks to a pot of water. Bring to a boil covered and let cook for 30 minutes. Remove the greens, and the broth that is left is rich with flavor. Add mashed chickpeas to this broth and it becomes a rich, delicious soup. Bean based soups are a perfect choice on these cold winter days. Use them to warm yourself, body, and soul.

Three Ways Heart Disease Can Sneak Up on You A

S A M E R I C A N S , our health

is far from perfect, but throughout the decades, we’ve seen great improvements to medical care and we have been living longer lives. But new health data in a recent report might shake up our complacency: The federal government finds that life expectancy for Americans has dropped for the first time in 25 years.

Though the factors are varied and complex, it has health experts and doctors taking a hard look at the current realities, including our rising obesity rate and the fact doctors may be reaching their limit on what they can do to treat heart disease. “The report, though troubling to any family doctor, can be used as the basis of a wake-up call to anyone to improve their health,” said Andrew Manganaro, MD, FACC, FACS, Chief Medical officer for Life Line Screening. “That is especially true for those who have been diagnosed with a risk factor for heart disease.” Manganaro urges patients ages 55 and older to be proactive with their heart health by scheduling regular doctor visits and following their doctor’s instructions. In addition, he recommends making regular cardiovascular screenings a part of your wellness routine. Not convinced you need a screening? These three realities of cardiovascular health might change your mind. 1. Heart disease is often silent Problems with the cardiovascular system can creep in gradually. Fully 80% – four out of five – of people who have a stroke have no symptoms beforehand. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and coronary artery disease are often silent, partly because the warning signs are not what most people expect. Symptoms are less obvious, such as a headache, shortness of breath, or pain in the jaw. Even if you are already taking steps to manage your risk factors, a screening will give you and your doctor a picture of the health of your cardiovascular system.

2. Minor conditions are easy to ignore Even if your screening doesn’t reveal you’re at a very high risk of suffering a stroke or heart attack, don’t be complacent. Because your cardiovascular system is interconnected, plaque in one artery makes it very possible that plaque will eventually show up elsewhere. For example, a diagnosis of peripheral artery disease is a condition that is associated with leg cramping, but that’s a diagnosis that should be taken as a warning. Because these leg arteries are literally narrowing, it could mean that the arteries to the brain could also narrow, creating the ideal conditions for a stroke. Likewise, if arteries to the heart were to narrow, that could lead to heart attack or heart failure. 3. Oral health is a window to artery health For decades, researchers have seen a connection between oral health and heart health. Back in the 1920s, for example, doctors thought they could cure heart disease by extracting teeth. While the connection is not yet fully understood, we do know oral plaque has a relationship to carotid artery plaque. Manganaro encourages patients to also see their dentist regularly and take good care of their gums and teeth. The good news is you don’t need a prescription or take a trip to the doctor’s office to have preventive health screenings for cardiovascular disease. Life Line Screening performs affordable testing in community settings throughout the country. This testing will reveal where carotid artery plaque buildup is located and how much. This could translate into lifesaving treatment for you or simply offer peace of mind. To find out when a screening clinic may be scheduled in your area, visit www.lifelinescreening.com/ HeartCheck or call 877-754-9631. Note: February is American Heart Month. It was originally declared in 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson to help people become aware of the many ways to improve their cardiovascular health.

HE ARTS & CULTURE

Alliance is pleased to present four new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from February 3-24. A public reception will take place on Friday, February 3, from 5 to 9 pm to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and catering will be available.

The Slovene Independent Biennial in the Lower Gallery This exhibition showcases the diversity of styles and approaches used today within the field of contemporary graphic illustration in Slovenia. The more than 50 artists on display are alumni of the Independent Biennial and have won multiple national and international awards and grants for their work. Slovenia, a member of the European Union, is located in Central Europe at the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea. In recognition of the fact that modern technological trends in illustration have eclipsed more traditional ways of visual depiction for the public, the Biennial of Slovene Independent Illustrators, established in 2007, seeks to redefine long-established concepts. The Biennial supports and promotes a wide variety of media and art forms, including digital work; but in order to be accessible to the public abroad, this particular exhibit emphasizes printed forms. Our hope is to provoke an open discussion about contemporary art and culture. The project is supported by Kino Šiska Ljubljana, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, the Ministry of Culture in Ljubljana, and the Slovene Consulate in Tennessee. For more information, visit www.culture.si/en/ Independent_Biennial. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists working in a variety of media such as photography, acrylic, pencil, fibers, oil, paper, and more. More than $1,000 in cash awards will be announced at a brief awards ceremony at 6 pm on February 3. For more information, visit www.knoxalliance.com/ national-juried-exhibition.

FTER 57 YEARS in the music industry, more than a hundred hit singles, and 46 prestigious awards, country music giant Kenny Rogers has embarked on his last-ever series of shows before his much-deserved retirement. The “Gambler’s Last Deal” takes Rogers, along with Grammy-winner Linda Davis, across the country, where he will play the most beloved hits from his long and distinguished career. With total record sales topping 120 million, the 78-year-old singer-songwriter is among the best-selling musicians of all

time. Starting in the 1950s with early rock and roll, Rogers then dabbled in psychedelic rock in the 1960s before becoming the country music stalwart we know today, with number ones including “Lady” and “Islands in the Stream.” Rogers is supported on every tour date by Linda Davis, who was signed to the star’s record label, Dreamcatcher Records, in 2000. The two have toured and performed together several times before, making this a fitting send-off for a modern musical legend.

FEBRUARY 18 AT 8 PM • BIJOU THEATRE

I

F YOU HAD told me when I graduated from the University of Tennessee in the summer of 2001 that I would end up making a living as a singer-songwriter and a television show host, I wouldn’t have believed you. My degree was in public relations; I didn’t have a background in music, unless you count singing in the congregation on Sundays. Amazingly though, as it turns out, you would’ve been right. I didn’t grow up singing or playing music. I’ve never had voice lessons, and I taught myself how to play guitar. With my music, I’ve always relied on passion instead of skill. The first song I learned to play was “Straight to Hell” by Drivin’ ’N’ Cryin.’ (My mom and dad were so proud.) My performing career began on an apartment balcony in South Knoxville, playing for

friends and random people passing by, which soon led to playing cover shows at local bars and restaurants. I was 23 when I wrote my first song in the summer of 2002. The first time I seriously considered pursuing a career in music was on May 9, 2007, after opening up for John Legend at Knoxville’s Tennessee Theatre. At the time, I was in graduate school, working on a master’s degree in English. A local promoter heard me perform at a songwriter showcase a few weeks earlier and, remarkably, offered me the gig. I went from performing in a noisy bar for 15 people who could care less to a sold out theatre of 1,500 who intently listened to every word I sang. The guy that walked on stage that night wasn’t the same guy that walked off. One set, six songs in just 30 minutes, changed my life forever.

in aesthetic medicine today is the use of injectable cosmetic fillers. These soft tissue fillers, which are injected into the skin, help to fill facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance. There are a wide range of fillers on the market today that are manufactured by a number of reputable pharmaceutical companies, each who have their own unique features and benefits. As to which filler is best for you, I would recommend that you consult with a trained and licensed medical professional with experience in the field of aesthetic medicine. While it’s not unusual for patients to take advantage of special offers available on these fillers, I encourage you to exercise caution here. No matter how great the offer is, remember that it’s your face. The money you save is no replacement for a licensed and experienced medical professional who I recommend inject your filler. And a great savings is no guarantee that the filler you receive is the best filler for you. At The Face Place™, I perform every facial filler injection. I am an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice. I am also a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. EN FOLDS is widely regarded as

one of the major music influencers of our generation. He’s spent more than a decade sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras – from Sydney, Australia to the Kennedy Center – performing his pop hits and his critically acclaimed concerto for piano and orchestra. For five seasons, he was a judge on the popular NBC series “The Sing Off,” which catapulted the art of a cappella into the national spotlight and helped launch the careers of numerous a cappella groups. Throughout his career, Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending musical art that includes pop albums as the front man for Ben Folds Five, multiple solo rock albums, as well as unique collaborative records with artists from Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor to Weird Al

and William Shatner. His most recent album is a blend of pop and classical original works, in part recorded with the revered classical sextet yMusic that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts. Folds is back to pound pianos again with crosscountry solo touring reminiscent of his earliest solo tours, where he defied skeptics by delivering a high-energy rock performance using the intimacy of just a piano. In addition to his self-described love of performing and making music “for humans,” Folds is also an avid photographer and is a member of the distinguished Sony Artisans of Imagery. He is also an advocate for music education and music therapy as a member of Artist Committee of the Americans For The Arts, and he serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Nashville Symphony.

Music for Brass, Percussion, and Organ” on Saturday, February 25, at 6 pm at West Hills Baptist Church, located at 409 Winston Road in Knoxville. This concert explores the power and majesty achieved by the combination of the Knoxville Choral Society, accompanist Danny Brian on the 22 rank Randall Dyer Pipe Organ, and some of the finest brass and percussion instrumentalists of the area. Selections will include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Rutter, Mack Wilberg, and Z. Randall Stroope. new works, the promotion of music education, and cultural outreach. For more than 50 years, the Knoxville Choral Society has brought the joy and wonder of choral music to the people of East Tennessee. Dedicated to maintaining a rich tradition of choral excellence for its members and audiences, this organization has through the years brought some of the world’s greatest choral music to thousands of listeners. The active membership of the Choral Society currently numbers 173, representing a wide cross-section of occupations, including many professional musicians serving in area schools, colleges, and churches. Since 1976, entrance into the group has been solely through audition. Soloists are selected from the performing chorus, with occasional guest soloists appearing as well. A small group from the society, the Knoxville Chamber Chorale, is selected by audition to perform at KCS concerts and by

invitation in the Knoxville area. All singers are contributing members through membership dues. Additional sources of income for this non-profit organization include ticket sales, special projects, and support from local businesses, the professional community, and benevolent individuals. More than 100 individuals and business firms maintain a financial support of KCS as Patrons through yearly contributions. KCS’s regular concert season normally includes a major choral and orchestral work and additional concerts of varied styles of choral literature for a variety of events. KCS often performs with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, as well as for convention programs and for special community events.

It’s Puppy Love! T

HE “CELEBRATION OF LOVE” began more than 3,000

years ago in the 5th Century AD with St. Valentine. In the 1700s, Cupid, the god of love, initiated our current tradition of people sending valentines on February 14th. Valentine’s Day is a time to recognize that love takes on many forms. At Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, during February, we demonstrate even a greater level of affection for all of our guests. There are many ways we can all show special love for our canine kids. Some ideas that come from Ms. C’s include: » Long walks, playing ball outside, and cuddling longer than usual. » Good brushing. Pets are just like humans. During winter months, with windows closed and furnaces on, low humidity can cause your pet’s skin to become dry and scaly. A thorough grooming will leave your pet clean and comfortable. A blend of moisturizing botanicals, vitamins A and E, aloe vera, and oatmeal are particularly good for your pet’s coat. Ms.

C’s is now offering special oatmeal shampoo baths and grooming sessions. » Many dogs love the company of other dogs and playtime. Instead of being home by themselves while you are at work, reserve a “play day,” providing your pet with a time to romp and have fun at Ms. C’s. Play days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:30 am to 6 pm. » If you are leaving town to celebrate Valentine’s, make reservations for your pet to stay at Ms. C’s, where your kid will be pampered and loved while you are away. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Make it a great day for you and your dog, and call 865986-6325 today for your appointment at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits.

Zoo Knoxville Has Another Record-Breaking Attendance Year in 2016

Z

OO KNOXVILLE welcomed 473,679 visitors in 2016, reaching a new attendance record for the second year in a row and exceeding the record set in 2015 by 33,564 people. While more than 202,000 zoo-goers came from Knoxville and the surrounding counties, more than half of all visitors (58%) were tourists whose impact to the local economy amounted to more than $36 million. The number of tourists visiting the zoo increased by 5% over 2015. “We began the year by unveiling new branding for the zoo and put the emphasis on our personality, which is wildly fun on the outside and serious about animals on the inside,” said Lisa New, Zoo Knoxville President and CEO. “We continued to focus on making sure each guest had a memorable zoo experience and elevating that at every opportunity. Those efforts were

reflected in the enthusiasm we heard from our local community and the positive things our visitors were saying on Trip Advisor. Making sure our guests not only see animals, but have the chance to connect with them through a personal encounter with one of our animal ambassadors, is the direction we will continue in 2017 with the opening of Tiger Forest, our biggest project in our 68-year history.” “Zoo Knoxville continues to be Knoxville’s most visited attraction, and a key part of the master plan we developed in 2014 is to increase the number of tourists who make the zoo a destination while visiting East Tennessee,” said Eddie Mannis, Chair of Zoo Knoxville’s Board of Directors. “Our continued tourism growth will make the impact we have on our local economy here in Knoxville and Knox County even greater.” Zoo Knoxville is open year-round, and October

was the highest attended month with 91,622 visitors. According to zip code data, visitors came from all 50 states, the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville. Zoo Knoxville features exhibits of wild animals in natural habitats and is world renowned for its efforts in conservation and species survival. Zoo Knoxville is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Knoxville’s largest attraction, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Currently the zoo is open from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm daily. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. For more information, visit www.zooknoxville.org.

into the second month of 2017 already? By now, you should have firmed up your specific financial goals for 2017 and set up your meeting with your CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ to map out your strategy to achieve your goals for the new year. If you haven’t, there’s still time to act! Don’t put it off! Tempus Fugit! If you are like many of our clients, setting goals is the easy part. Remaining focused on your goals, tracking your progress, and knowing when to make adjustments are the common obstacles preventing most of us from achieving our goals. One particular client comes to mind as I write this. His primary goal is to sell his business this year and begin enjoying retirement. We have been working with him for the past

four years to prepare his business for the ultimate sale. Understandably, his emotions have been on a roller coaster, yet he remains determined to move forward with his retirement plans. Because his goals are specific and quantifiable, we have already mapped out his 2017 calendar with very specific points we must accomplish along the way in order to achieve the desired outcome. We recognize that the desired successful outcome will more likely be the result of a well-thought out strategy rather than chance. If you haven’t planned the specific steps you will need to pursue throughout 2017 to achieve your specific goals, then now is the time to act. Meet with your CFP® and design your 2017 plan for success. And, just as important, commit now to tracking your progress, refining your strategies along the way to respond to competitive, marketplace, and life’s inevitable changes. INTER IS NOW in full swing.

The sun is lower on the horizon, and the temperatures have dropped. Most outdoor activities have moved indoors, warm weather wardrobes have been put away, and our furnaces are replacing the warm air that Mother Nature was providing free of charge just a few short months ago. But is that sunshine that you welcome into your home on these cold winter days really as welcomed as you might think? Because the winter’s UV rays from the sun can damage your home’s furniture, draperies, carpets, and wood floors, it’s prudent to protect your home’s interior, not to mention eliminating that annoying and blinding glare from the sun coming through your windows and glass doors, reflecting off a nearby lake, pool, or patio. Like sunglasses for your windows, Retractable Sunshades from Screens of East Tennessee can enhance your view of the out-of-doors by filtering the sun while reducing annoying and unwanted glare. Exterior mounted Retractable Sunshades provide a clean look from inside your home without affecting your interior window treatments and operate with your windows whether they are opened or closed. You can maintain your views from your living room and kitchen or opt for a complete “black out” effect in a media room. A variety of fabric types and styles can filter as much or as little light as you desire, and we offer a wide selection of options to match or complement your home’s décor and color scheme. Unlike permanent shade products, Retractable Sunshades are there when you need them and retracted out of sight when you don’t. Usually operated by wireless remote control, motorized shades can be raised and lowered simply and easily to suit your individual needs. They also have the added feature of being operated automatically by an adjustable sun sensor or can be incorporated into many home automation control systems. Many homeowners already use Retractable Sunshades to prevent passive heat gain in the summer months by preventing the sun’s rays from reaching windows, doors, and patios, and they are a great way to keep your home cooler and more comfortable while reducing energy costs. Retractable Sunshades also offer UV protection, which can protect your home’s interior and furnishings. Whether preventing the glaring winter sun or protecting your home from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, now is a great time to call Screens of East Tennessee to receive your no-cost, no-obligation consultation and estimate for Retractable Sunshades for your home.

Closet Trends for 2017 A

ROOMY, walk-in closet used to be

considered a luxury limited to larger houses that few could afford. Not any longer! Master suite closets are now found in almost every new house or renovated home. In the past decade, demand for larger closets has grown substantially. Today’s custom homes include master closets that were once large enough for kitchens. With the additional space, the need to maximize its functionality is crucial. Here are some trends design experts with Tailored Living of Knoxville have seen as we start 2017: » His-and-Hers Closets – You may be married, but your needs are not alike! These separate closets, often identical in size and style, allow each spouse their own space that’s designed for their specific needs. For example, usually a woman needs more shelving for shoes and purses, while a man needs storage for ties, belts, and suits. » Mixture of Colors and Textures – Monochromatic matching is a thing of the past. The trend of contrasting cabinet colors in the kitchen has moved to the closet. An island can use a different but complementary color, or drawer faces and doors can have a contrasting color or texture. For example, the cabinetry may be a textured wood-grain, while the drawer faces use a glossy, smooth

A simple closet design can be made more elegant by incorporating items like glass doors with LED lighting and a bench to sit down while dressing.

finish. This look adds both elegance and a modern look to any space. Additionally, with multiple closets in a house, homeowners are using different colors and wood-grain textures for each space. » Light it Up! - Good lighting is essential for a closet so you don’t leave the house in one blue sock and the other black! Besides the ongoing trend of incorporating small or larger chandeliers, homeowners are adding LED lights built into shelving, drawers, and closet rods. This adds light to key task areas.

Many are also opting for wireless or batteryoperated, motion-activated lighting. » Have a Seat – From a simple upholstered chair placed in the corner to a comfortable window seat with a top that lifts up to provide additional storage underneath, creating a place to sit continues to increase in popularity. » Mirror, Mirror on the Wall – Many of us, both men and women, make several clothing changes before deciding what to wear. To keep from stepping outside the closet for a view of yourself, mirrors are now incorporated inside the closet. Full-length mirrors can slide out to utilize a smaller space, or a design can be centered around a wall-hung framed mirror. Also, to reflect more light, mirrors are being incorporated into door and drawer fronts. For your custom designed closet, pantry, laundry, or any space in your home, call Tailored Living of Knoxville to schedule a free consultation. The design experts will help you create the space of your dreams with a budget you’ll also love!

Not All Valentines Are Chocolate

S

BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM

URPRISE S C O M E

in all shapes and sizes, but there are two distinct types… good and bad. While good surprises can leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for years, bad surprises can wreak all kinds of havoc and inconvenience to your life. W h a t ’s t h e best surprise you ever received? I can think of a few t h at s t i l l evo ke warm memories and a smile. Several years ago, my husband called to tell me to shower and change quickly. “Wear something nice but comfortable,” he said “Don’t worry about the kids; a sitter is on her way.” A limo driver whisked me away to a spa where I was pampered with a facial and a most needed body massage! Later that evening, the same driver shuttled me and several other ladies to a secret dinner where our husbands sang love songs quartet style and prepared a five-course meal for us

to enjoy. I was the envy of all my friends that year, and I of course soaked up the attention! February is the time each year when we should take some time to create those lasting memories and do something extra for those we love. Dinner and a movie? Absolutely. But, don’t stop there. As a woman, I know we all love to feel special. We n e e d t h o s e occasional “over the top” surprises that spice up our marriage and make us feel cherished. Each February we get numerous requests for surprise cleanings. We’ve cleaned while the misses was at work and while the mister has been sent out for some “man time.” Everyone loves a clean house, especially when you aren’t the one doing the cleaning. If you are struggling with what to do for the love of your life, let us help. We are experts at making everything sparkle and shine and helping you create the ambience in your home that fosters those coveted warm, happy feelings.

tile & grout

Also, in the spirit of surprises, we have one of our own. Anyone that books a cleaning during February will get something special from our crew. Perhaps it’s an extra room cleaning or a deep-cleaned front porch. Each home is unique, but we look CO-OWNER forward to surprising John YOU and helping you Fitzwilliam surprise the one you love. Tip: If your partner is the type that needs a little help zeroing in on exactly what you want, you can shamelessly snip this article and put it on the fridge. I have even been known to leave articles open on the coffee table with portions highlighted, and it even worked… once. Four Reasons to Fall in Love with Shae Design Studio This Valentine’s Day! H OMEOWNERS OFTEN ASK

what the advantages of hiring an interior designer for cabinetry are versus going to The Home Depot or a local cabinet shop. Here at Shae Design Studio, we strive to give you your dream kitchen or bath and ultimately save you time and money. Here are our top four reasons our clients fall in love with our services: 1. Save Money Designers aren’t only for the rich and famous. Most people are conditioned to believe that interior designers are expensive, providing only highly priced items and design fees. In reality, we help you avoid mistakes that are expensive to fix. We think about how furniture placement will affect electrical outlets, how to balance your light sources to create the right atmosphere, and where your sink is in relation to your stove. These are big ticket items you want done right the first time. Hiring us helps to ensure that at the end of the project, everything functions well, enhances

your quality of life, and even raises your property value. 2. Have a Professional Design Concept Interior designers have unique abilities with visualization and spatial planning that only a limited number of the population has been gifted with. Homeowners tend to get familiar with their layout and find it difficult to imagine other possibilities. Here at Shae Design Studio, we take your initial concerns and wish lists and carefully piece together a functional and cohesive design for the space you’ve always dreamed of but didn’t know how to achieve. 3. Maximize Trade Connections and Resources The designers at Shae Design Studio have spent thousands of hours researching and perfecting our craft. We have resources at our fingertips that you couldn’t dream of! In many cases, those connections lead to great pricing, faster turnaround, and better options. Trade-only resources supply unique items not available to the general public. Working with a designer who has

relationships with vendors can really help out in making your project a success! 4. Create the “WOW” Factor A designer is trained to think spatially and outside the box with a creative and artistic eye and envision the end result. Our goal is to create that “wow” factor that you haven’t been able to achieve alone. As you can see, it’s not that you can’t afford to hire an interior designer - you can’t afford not to! You will be much more satisfied with the results and happier in your space. Shae Design Studio will be running a cabinetry special during the month of February for a free wood hood or trashcan insert with the purchase of a kitchen. Call or stop by today, and let us show you how much there is to love about working with a designer!

Consignment with my son, Aaron, our experience in operating our upscale furniture consignment business has been full of surprises. First of all, let me begin by thanking all of you for our success, which has been the result of both your support and encouragement. No matter what new venture any of us pursue in life, it’s likely that we have expectations of what life will be like in that endeavor moving forward. But life has a way of surprising. Both Aaron and I are outgoing people, yet we never anticipated the many friendships we would forge with the people that come through our doors daily at Premiere Consignment. These are new friends that we likely would never have met had it not been for our small business. I believe that is largely the result of our presence within Premiere Consignment where Aaron, my husband, Toby, and I are the faces of our business each and every day. We’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how positively our upscale furniture consignment boutique has been received by both our consignors and customers. Consignment style businesses aren’t new, but a consignment business that focuses primarily on upscale name brand furniture, home décor, and Oriental and area rugs is. I believe the success of Premiere Consignment is largely due to our location, which is surrounded by upscale lake and golf front communities that attract higher income families from throughout the country. Whether they relocate to Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, or more than a dozen other nearby communities, they all have one thing in common: A moving van loaded with gently used, high-quality furniture, much of which they will part with because it may not all fit in their new home or doesn’t match their new home’s décor. Premiere Consignment offers these newly arrived homeowners with the perfect venue for selling their unused items while offering them savings of up to 90% off the original retail prices on in-stock furniture that might work nicely in their new homes as well. We’re also the perfect solution for homeowners who are downsizing or wish to conduct an estate sale. Five Creative Ways to Incorporate Reclaimed Wood in Your Home

R

E C L A I M E D W O O D offers an

incredible story that’s taken centuries to write. Some pieces may come from 18th and 19th century barns. Others may come from warehouses and factories built during the Industrial Revolution. Because of its varying origins, reclaimed wood exhibits characteristics that cannot be replicated, and no two boards are alike. You can sometimes discover exceptionally tight grain patterns, nail holes, weathered colors, rich patinas, saw marks, or other stunning characteristics in these one-ofa-kind products. You will be able to create a space as unique as your taste with genuine reclaimed wood. And because there are so many ways to incorporate it in your home, from floor to ceiling, your only limitation will be your imagination. Here are just a few ways you can incorporate reclaimed wood into your home or office:

1. Wide Plank Flooring

Reclaimed wood offers a remarkable and durable wide plank flooring experience. It is often available in much wider widths and longer lengths than today’s typical hardwood flooring. Antique Historic Planks may contain a blend of original saw marks, mixtures of grain patterns, and light and dark boards.

3. Reclaimed Wood for Walls

We w e r e n ’ t joking when we said reclaimed wood could be used for floors, c e i l i n gs, a n d everything in between. If you are looking for a product to create an accent wall, reclaimed wo o d i s t h e perfect solution. An accent wall of GreyBrown Barn Siding, with its nail holes, deep grain texture, and weathered knots, can transform any space.

4. Fireplace Mantels

Reclaimed Fireplace Mantels are historic masterpieces of both beauty and style. We handcraft our Fireplace Mantels from generations’ old historic beams that supported old agricultural

and industrial structures. Our Hand-Hewn Jenny Blalock Owner Mantels feature original axe marks, while our Rough Sawn Mantels offer a smoother surface.

5. Reclaimed Trim & Baseboards

Even in the largest projects, the smallest details often make the biggest difference. The addition of Grey-Brown Barn siding, window trim and baseboards will perfectly complement the other reclaimed wood elements in your home or office. We would love to demonstrate for you just how reclaimed wood can be creatively incorporated in your residential and commercial projects, from those applications already listed to beams, wooden vents, stair systems, and more. To learn more, you are invited to contact us to discover how reclaimed wood products can create the totally unique “showcase” look you’ve been searching for in your home or business.

Plantation Reclaimed Inc. 865.243.4604 www.plantationreclaimed.com

2. Reclaimed Wood for Ceilings

Reclaimed wood can also create stunning ceiling treatments. Authentic Reclaimed Barn Siding is a perfect solution for this application. Our Reclaimed Barn Siding comes from antique barns and other wooden structures that our craftsmen de-nail, hand inspect, and kiln dry to ensure it is of the highest quality. Grey-Brown Barn Siding is particularly unique in that it renders a weathered patina from direct exposure to exterior elements during its lifetime. Februar y 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

MONTH’S INI S SLAST UE

of Everything Knoxville, we introduced our new “Discover” series of design-inspired feature articles that we hope will inspire you to explore new design options for your home. In this issue, we will answer the most commonly asked questions regarding your bed and bath, where we spend one-third of every day. What is the difference between ready-made, semi-custom, and custom bedding collections? Ready-made are the most budget conscious bedding collection solutions. However, there are fewer options available; they come as is, are stock items, and generally can be purchased and received quickly from your selected vendor. Semi-custom collections are pre-selected combinations that offer you the flexibility and convenience to switch out and substitute pieces, including accent pillows or sizes, and often offer the option to change a comforter to a duvet. Custom bedding, on the other hand, offers you the unique opportunity to express your individual personality, allowing you to create a one-of-a-kind collection that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else. Decorating Den is excited to announce that we’re now offering a fully customizable luxury bedding collection from Lili Alessandra that will allow you to create that custom look you hope to achieve. Our design consultants are available to work with you to help you design your very own custom luxury bedding collection that reflects your unique personality and style preferences. I want that luxury bedding collection appearance but without all the pillows. What are your thoughts? A complete bedding ensemble doesn’t have to

be filled with pillows. With custom and semi-custom bedding collections, you have the creative option to combine your style and design preferences, providing you with that complete luxury design look. This is where our design consultants can really be of benefit to you. For those pillow lovers among you, we can help you achieve your desired look as well. Duvets are so heavy, and coverlets are too light. What’s the correct choice? Layering is your key to a complete look in a custom bedding collection. Using a combination of pieces really creates that custom designer look you’re trying to achieve. We also offer varying weights in all of our semicustom and custom bedding collection lines so you can have a lighter weight duvet for summer or heavier comforter for the colder winter months. This provides greater year-round versatility. Adding throws or bed scarves at the foot of the bed can also really add that extra designer touch and balances the bed’s interest. I’ve seen a wide range of both fully upholstered beds and upholstered headboards, but I’m not sure which one is the best option. Upholstered headboards combined with a bed skirt can create a classic traditional appeal, while an upholstered bed offers a more streamlined appearance. Both of these options provide an exciting way to bring new vitality to your existing bedroom furniture collection while also adding new texture and creating a warm and cozy appeal. I would like to update my bathroom, but I would really prefer to avoid all the demolition that is so often required.

That’s fully understandable. At Decorating Den, our design consultants can offer you a full range of bath update options that don’t require gutting your existing bathroom. We frequently update the mirrors with easily installed framing over your existing mirror. New rugs, shower curtains, accessories, and lighting are also great ways to affordably update your home’s bathrooms. Another recommendation we often make to homeowners is to add a remotely controlled shade to an existing window located over your tub area. This option will allow you to control both light and privacy without the need to climb in or over your tub. One final suggestion is to consider bringing the color palette and design details from your bedroom into your bathroom to create that cohesive bedroom and bath “en-suite” look. Rather than hibernate all winter long, why not combine your creative design skills with those of our design consultants to create that custom showcase yet affordable look you’ve been dreaming of for your home? As a special incentive to our readers, we’re currently offering a special 25% discount off the largest bedding and bath accessories lines in all of East Tennessee. Now is the perfect time to call Decorating Den Interiors for your free, no-obligation, in-home consultation to discover just how affordable updating and refreshing your home can be.

UT Gardens Plant of the Month: Japanese Maple B Y S U E H A M I LTO N , D I R EC TO R O F T H E UNIVERSIT Y OF TENNESSEE GARDENS

J

APANESE MAPLES, Acer

palmatum, are at the top of my list of favorite trees. This group of trees has such diversity in growth habit, foliage color, leaf-type, form, and even bark color that there really is an ideal selection for every garden. At last count, I have 18 different cultivars in my home landscape, and my garden is only a half acre! You might be wondering why I’ve chosen to highlight them this month. For one, as long as the ground is not frozen, this is a great time to plant a Japanese maple or any tree or shrub. Woody plants have gone dormant, and with the cooler temperatures and rainfall, it’s an ideal time to get such plants in the ground. Such plants typically outperform those planted in the spring. Secondly, I want to focus on the group of Japanese maples that make quite a show in the winter landscape. If you have space, don’t overlook adding this great winter-interest tree to your landscape. Several Japanese maple selections are valued for the brilliant bark color they exhibit once temperatures turn cold. Each has an upright growth habit and, depending on cultivar, can grow between six and 25 feet tall. Foliage is a lime green in spring darkening in color as summer approaches. Fall foliage is either a bright, showy shade of yellow or a fusion of red, orange, and yellow. They perform best in a slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5) and moist but well-drained soil in full-sun to partial shade. Bark coloration will always be best when the tree is grown in full-sun, and young twigs and branches will typically be more color intensive than the tree trunk itself. Coloration can almost be absent in summer. Some selections of this group of Japanese maples can lose their color intensity in the main trunk of the tree as they age. Japanese maples really are easy trees to maintain. They are not heavy feeders, and using compost or a well-aged mulch well away from the base of the tree and about three to four inches deep will provide enough nutrition for your maple, making commercial fertilizers unnecessary. You may find that you would like to prune or shape your Japanese maple. This is a matter of preference. Remove crossing branches and thin out twigs that are bunched 48

together. This will reveal and accentuate the beauty of the tree’s framework. The best time to prune Japanese maples in our region of the country is late February to early March. It’s recommended to use selective pruning practices, removing no more than one-third of the branches at one time or during one season. I recommend planting your tree where it can be a focal point in your landscape. You can make it a single specimen planted in an open lawn. Nighttime landscape up-lighting is a fabulous way to showcase the beauty of the colorful bark and the architecture of the tree. Another effective way to distinguish this tree is to pay careful attention to the angle-of-view from which the tree will be seen in your garden and provide it a contrasting-color backdrop. It could be the background color of your home or utility shed or the contrasting color of an evergreen. Planting in a decorative container in a color matching the tree’s bark can be incredibly striking. Add to the winter color of this combination by planting pansies and violas with matching or contrasting flowers around the base of the tree. Japanese maples, because they are not large trees, can always be used in mixed planting boarders and in foundation plantings. Outstanding Selections for Winter Appeal » ‘Aka kawa hime’ has bright red bark in winter and is one of the more dwarf in this unique group of maples. Grows 6’-8’ tall and 4’-6’ wide. » ‘Beni kawa’ also has bright salmon-red bark in winter. Grows 10’ tall and 8’-10’ wide. » ‘Bihou’ has bark that turns orange in the

winter. Grows 15’ tall and 8’-10’ wide and can be viewed in the UT Gardens, Jackson. » ‘Dixie Delight’ has bark that changes in the winter first to orange and then to yellow as temperatures get colder. Grows 10’-12’ tall and 6’-8’ wide. » ‘Japanese Sunrise’ has multi-colored winter bark. One side of the tree will be bright red, while the other side is a bright yellow. In between these two colors, the bark is a fusion of yellow, orange, and red. Can grow up to 25’ tall by 20’ wide. A specimen is on display in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. » ‘Red Wood’ has coral-pink bark much like that of ‘Sango Kaku’. Known to keep good bark coloration in the old wood as well. Grows up to 12’ tall and 4’-8’ wide. » ‘Sango kaku’ is known for its showy coral-pink coloration in the winter landscape. Grows up to 25’ tall and 20’ wide. Specimens are on display at both the UT Gardens sites in Knoxville and Jackson. » ‘Winter Flame’ has showy red winter bark. Grows 8’-10’ tall and 6-8’ wide. You can also see this tree in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg. Photo by S. Hamilton, courtesy UTIA

February in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

H

IGH OF 65 AND SUNNY. High of 20 and

snowing. Both patterns happening within a week. Welcome to winter in East Tennessee! It’s hard on us when the weather is so erratic, and it’s hard on our plants. Even those that live inside tend to be somewhat unhappy this time of year unless you have a solarium and a humidifier. Let’s talk about those inside plants first. » Go now and take a good look at them. Do they need a shower or sponge bath? Do you have bugs? Are there signs of fungus? Do they need to be repotted? Is there water in the saucer, which means you are over watering? Has the soil pulled away from the pot, which means you are under watering? All these problems need to be addressed and will give you something to do on those days we’re trapped inside by the 1/4” of snow that fell. » Don’t forget to feed the birds! No, they aren’t inside, but you usually are when you’re watching them. Keep feeders clean

and full, and make sure they have a water supply, especially when things are frozen. What about those days when you have cabin fever? Here are some things you can do outside on those wonderful days when the sun is shining and you can imagine spring on the horizon. » As always, walk around and take a good look at your plants. I especially advise you to check large trees for signs of trouble: Cracks, weeping, woodpecker holes, shelf mushrooms, and sawdust. We’ve had five large trees come down in my neighborhood already this year. Contact an arborist if you have concerns. » If any of your perennials have heaved themselves out of the ground, gently push them back in. » Do you have an unbearable urge to plant something? You can plant or transplant trees and shrubs any time the ground isn’t frozen. If you didn’t get pansies in the fall (because every greenhouse within 100 miles sold out), you can also plant them now.

» On a warm, dry day, you can mow your lawn to remove leaves and cut the tops off weeds before they spread seed. » Ok, deep breath. I’m going to talk a little about pruning. Y’all give me an anxiety attack sometimes when I see what you do to your plants. This is an extensive subject with many “it depends” qualifications, so I’m just going to hit the basics, and you can call or come by with specific questions. 1. If a tree is big and you need to have work done to it, call an arborist. Do not hire your cousin’s son’s girlfriend’s brother because he’s cheap! Improper pruning (and topping) turns a healthy tree into a hazard. Besides, you’re likely to do permanent damage to yourself and/or the tree! 2. This is a good time to prune smaller trees and shrubs that have lost their leaves, because you can see the structure. Take out anything that’s dead, damaged, or diseased first. (If it’s brittle and snaps when you bend it, it’s dead. If it’s flexible, there is life.) Then you can take out crossing branches or any that rub together and branches that are going in the wrong direction. Next comes all the little twigs that are smaller than a pencil. The canopy is last and should be cut in a natural curve while removing no more than 1/3 of its size. If you need to take off more than that, you have the wrong plant in the wrong place. Consider removing it. Also, please be careful. Duct tape can’t fix pruning mistakes. 3. You can also see if there are sneaky plants like privet and hackberry and wild grapevines growing amongst your shrubbery. Remove them now and paint the stalk of privet with Roundup or another herbicide to keep them from coming back. 4. Do not prune spring bloomers or hydrangea macrophylla, or you will have no bloomers. You will be commando in the garden. 5. You can shape some evergreens, but wait to do any major pruning for another month or so. Also, remember that there are different types of evergreens with different requirements, so Yews and Hollies aren’t treated the same. And do not trim spring blooming evergreens like Azaleas! (See number 4.) 6. Grasses can be cut down to 6” or so if they are looking ratty. Some will slice you to ribbons, so wear heavy gloves! You can do smaller grasses such as liriope with a string trimmer. Please don’t hesitate to call or come by if you have questions. We want to help you have a great yard!

ceramic, porcelain, marble, travertine, and a variety of other materials, provides homeowners with a large variety of uses throughout homes and businesses. Decorative, durable, functional, you name it, tile comes in an almost limitless selection of sizes, shapes, colors, and textures that make a similarly limitless number of designs available. In fact, with so many choices available, selecting tile can be overwhelming for most homeowners. As with so many decisions we make today, what you don’t know can hurt you. For instance, what type of substrate will you be applying your tile to? Is that important? You better bet it is. More tile failures are the result of poor or inadequate surfaces or surface preparation than any other cause. Shouldn’t my installer know what’s required? One of the biggest challenges for homeowners is selecting a qualified contractor. Sadly, many tradespeople understand that they’re not likely to work for you again and their work only has to last longer than the amount of time it takes for your check to clear. Also, many of these same challenges exist when working with the big box stores, who work almost exclusively with subcontractors. Located in convenient and nearby West Knoxville, Exact Tile offers home and business owners alike a totally unique experience when buying tile. They offer customers a level of service that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else. The owners are trained and experienced craftsmen that have decades of installation experience. Exact Tile offers you a totally unique experience, including design consultation, AutoCad and SketchUp drawings, installation, and service, and they do not use subcontractors. Exact Tile accepts full responsibility for every phase of your project and offers a comprehensive warranty that is unique in today’s marketplace. G R E A T E S T satisfaction I experience, usually several times each and every day, is the look of surprise on the faces of our customers when they discover that beautiful, custom-made furniture can be theirs at a reasonable price. There is also a high level of pride that I derive from knowing what happens behind the scenes with every piece of furniture we sell at Amish Excellence, such as: » Families, not factories are the backbone of the Amish furniture phenomenon. Respect for the craft and culture will never be taken for granted. » Knowing that all of our hardwood furniture is made right here in the USA. » All of the hardwoods used to produce our furniture were grown, harvested, and sustained using the best practices here in the USA. But it goes beyond that. At Amish Excellence, there are no furniture assembly lines. Each piece of furniture is hand-crafted, one at a time, by a genuine Amish artisan who has learned his craft from the generations of artisans within his family

that preceded him and who will pass his craft on to his sons and daughters. Each piece of wood that is used to create your furniture item is individually handselected for quality before it is used rather than what typically occurs on an assembly line. Given that, each board used inherently comes with the beautiful markings that only Mother Nature can provide. No one piece can be made exactly like any other. The artisans who create your furniture item in the wood working shops on their farms view their work as an

artist views their painting or their sculpture and not as an employee on some assembly line in countries such as Vietnam, Mexico, or China. One of the many characteristics of the Amish culture is the unmistakable quality and pride in workmanship and the commitment to creating a piece of furniture for someone they will likely never know. On rare occasions, mistakes do occur. Our commitment is to make things right and to repair or replace any defect in workmanship. We have such a passion for what we do, and it’s a passion that we look forward to sharing with all of you. I have always believed that beautiful surroundings and inspiring relationships lift the spirit and punctuate true happiness within. Let us be a part of creating your beautiful surroundings! You can purchase a custom-made piece of furniture that is crafted in the USA by genuine Amish artisans. These are furniture pieces that will become part of your legacy. Your story. Your family.

Five Residential

Design Trends in Hardwood

H

ARDWOOD MAY BE

one of the oldest building materials known to man, yet architects, designers, and homeowners are always finding fresh ways to use it in the modern home. What’s the appeal? Flexibility and variety, for starters. “We’re constantly delighted to see how traditional woods like oak and walnut are being employed with renewed flair and imagination,” said Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center. “Subtle tweaks can make something familiar, look innovative. The current trend is to take a classic hardwood application, like paneling or flooring, and give it a stylish, up-to-the-minute twist.” Here’s a look at what’s trending: » Wide-plank flooring Perhaps no recent trend has been more influential than the use of wide-plank hardwood flooring. Traditional plank widths, ranging from 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches, are still popular. But today’s homeowners often ask for widths between 5 and 7 inches, and there is even demand for up to 10 or 12 inches. Wider floorboards can make a space look larger and more modern. With fewer seams, these floors can be treated like a canvas: Ebonized oak or walnut for a sleek, dark look; light woods like ash or maple for a chic, urban vibe; weatheredgray tones for a slightly rustic effect – the possibilities are endless. » Wood ceilings It used to be that hardwood planks primarily went on floors or walls, but today they’re appearing on residential ceilings too. Simple poplar beadboard, painted white or with a light natural stain, looks crisp and airy overhead, adding visual interest while remaining quiet and unassuming. For a more assertive

54

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2017

affect, specify tongue-and-groove walnut or hickory, woods with character that provide a degree of drama. For that reason, they’re best reserved for large, high-ceilinged rooms that are not easily overwhelmed. In smaller, lower spaces, a ceiling with too much personality can feel oppressive. » Mix and match Architects and designers, who once avoided using different varieties of hardwood in a single residential space, now mix and match

them with newfound enthusiasm. Clearly contrasting wood tones – blond maple and black walnut, for example – create a striking effect that can work well in both traditional and contemporary settings. This is particularly true in kitchens, where a favorite configuration features upper cabinetry in a light-color wood such as birch, and lower cabinetry in a darkcolor wood like cherry. The result is a space that has strong visual interest and is light and airy, yet solidly grounded. » Gray stains and finishes Gray is a classic “neutral” that never truly goes out of fashion. It’s currently one of the most popular colors, ranging from pale smoke to deep charcoal, showing up in hardwood flooring, paneling and cabinetry. Whether light or dark, gray stains bring out any wood’s natural grain and texture. Grays are versatile and timeless – quiet and soothing colors that recede into the background without losing personality or becoming faceless. That’s why they work in any style décor, yet always look modern. » Distressed hardwoods Homeowners drawn to the popular look of weather-beaten rustic and elegantly timeworn are turning to distressed hardwoods – new product to which scrapes, nail holes, notches, saw marks, and other signs of wear and tear have been carefully applied, often by hand. Manufacturers are able to reproduce convincing facsimiles of anything from the burnished walnut floorboards of an 18th century salon to the rugged oak-plank siding of a 19th century Pennsylvania barn. It’s a distinctive look that offers a wide range of aesthetics. Visit www.hardwoodinfo.com for more about residential design trends and other applications and products using American hardwoods.

OCATED ABOUT 37 MILES

southeast of Knoxville near the edge of the Cherokee National Forest, the picturesque Gothic-Revival Shults Grove Methodist Church (constructed in 1914) sits on a corner lot in the Rocky Flats section of the unincorporated community of Cosby, Sevier County. After a meandering approach through arboraceous back roads, past a vernacular tipi (yes, it’s there!) and other remote residences, the modest, wood-frame, historic church appears perfectly suited to its environs, a shaded and serene hilltop location in this rural crossroads. At just more than a century old, the church had been witness to the early 20th century growth of this area, built during the county’s time of transition from an isolated, agricultural population towards a modern, industrious economy that found success in the logging, timber, and tourism sectors. Rocky Flats was one of several post-Civil War settlements in Sevier County that developed around anchor establishments like religious or educational edifices that would often double as communal meeting places. In contrast to other portions of Tennessee and the South, where agricultural production relied heavily upon large farms with slave labor, Sevier County’s economy was less devastated by the war since much of the population consisted of small, self-reliant farms with no choice but to display resilience in the face of turmoil. Gradual countywide population growth after the war increased agricultural production and strengthened local markets. This advancement allowed Sevier County to return to pre-war agricultural production levels by the 1870s, quicker than industrial and manufacturing trades were able to accomplish. Concurrently, churches in the county (and South) were encountering a time of recuperation, and in some cases reformation. Divisive regional and political alliances led to sectional battles between congregations, and some churches had been destroyed during the war (like the Baptist Church in Sevierville), leaving the congregations to postpone meetings until many years later. Prior to the conflict, the county contained only Baptist and Methodist denominations, each retaining northern and southern sections. One large cornerstone of the Methodist community in Sevier County, the Southern Methodist Church, was constructed in 1853 in downtown Sevierville, but a noticeable shift occurred by the 1870s when small, rural churches and schools in secluded areas became the “backbone of the rural community.” Both Methodist and Baptist branches constructed new meeting houses for established congregations and built new churches, many of which were unassuming, one- or two-room log 58

or wood buildings. In September 1912, George and R.C. Shults deeded a portion of their family’s land holdings in the area to the Methodist Episcopal Church at a cost of $25. This acreage, along with some additional land that was donated, would serve as the location of the 1914 building. Prior to construction, church members had congregated in a local schoolhouse, as noted in an August 2014 article highlighting the centennial celebration, written by local history buff Duay O’Neil with the Newport Plain Talk. During the church’s early years, lay ministers and traveling pastors served the congregation; one local resident named Samuel Scott Wilson (who held regular posts as a schoolteacher, farmer, and mail carrier) also presided over services when a pastor was unobtainable. In the early 1950s, the church was forced to close due to declining membership and financial hardship. By the mid-1960s, minor improvements had been made that allowed Shults Grove Methodist to re-open, including a coal furnace that replaced the old wood stove. During the next couple of years, the exterior was repainted, pews replaced, and a new tin roof was installed. A small wood outhouse was built on the back side of the property and remains today. Reunification of the Northern and Southern Methodist churches occurred in the 1960s, so the church was renamed Shults Grove United Methodist Church during this era. Dolly Parton’s Heartsong film in the early 1990s featured Shults Grove in some of the scenery, and the church maintains an active parish with weekly services held under the direction of current pastor Alta Raper. On November 22, 2016, the Shults Grove Methodist Church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, which the National Park Service states is “the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation.” This honorary recognition was made

for Shults Grove Methodist’s local significance in the area of architecture. The church retains historic stylistic details and materials, evident in the original stacked stone masonry foundation, wood weatherboard siding, and a square-shaped bell tower with copper spire and decorative brackets. Gothic-arch wood sash windows are located along both sides of the sanctuary and display Y-tracery with stained glass. Wood details are prevalent in the sanctuary and include wood floors, flush board wood walls, wainscoting, and chair rails. The vaulted ceilings are a dark wood in contrast to the white walls, and a wood ladder provides access to the bell tower. The church building retains a high degree of architectural integrity that is easily conveyed and experienced to the visitor. Freestanding wood stairs ascend the hill up to the church from the main road, as if beckoning passers-by to venture in and experience this sacred space. Though slightly off the beaten path and far from the bustling nearby cities, Shults Grove Methodist is a worthy side trip for those who appreciate vernacular adaptations of ecclesiastic architecture and want to get a feeling of the history of Sevier County.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. Thundering Longhorns Return for Dixie Stampede’s 30th Season OMING OFF a record-setting

season, Dixie Stampede thunders in to the new year with the return of a crowd favorite – the mighty Longhorns. “The Most Fun Place to Eat in the Smokies” is celebrating the beginning of its thrilling 30th season. David Swangel, Dixie Stampede General Manager, says Dixie Stampede’s cast members and guests are the real reason the attraction is celebrating 30 years of providing quality family entertainment. “Thanks to all of our cast members and guests for helping us reach the impressive milestone of our 30th season,” said Swangel. “We owe our success as the most-visited dinner attraction in the world to everyone who has come to see us through the years. We’re excited about what the next 30 years hold for us.” The impressive Longhorns make an appearance during the show as the pioneering settlers move west in search of new lands. For most guests, this is the closest they will come to these magnificent animals. The return of the Longhorns came as a result of guest requests to bring back this favorite show feature. “We had a number of requests from our guests about bringing back the Longhorns to the show this year,” said Swangel. “They are fascinating animals that our guests ask for often, so we’re excited to bring them back to celebrate this season!”

While there have been sensational changes throughout the show’s 30 seasons, perhaps the stunning LED wall backdrop added two seasons ago has ushered in the most excitement from guests. Those renovations included a massive LED wall, which transformed the 35,000-square-foot arena into an ultra-immersive environment. New audio and lighting technology and several other fascinating new show enhancements have provided guests a marveling end result. “Our guests absolutely love the enhancements – the LED wall, the new sound system – that we added to the show,” said Swangel. “They still talk about how they now feel like part of the show more than ever before. We’re always finding ways to improve and we’re always dreaming up new ideas we can’t wait to share with our guests.” Shortly after entering the arena, guests understand why a trip to Dixie Stampede is unlike anything they’ve encountered before. Accentuated by newly-added video mapping, the floor of the arena is filled with images of stampeding horses so lifelike that the thundering hooves rattle the guests’ tables. From there, Dixie Stampede’s talented cast of performers lead the show’s impressive stable of 32 magnificent horses, which are the true stars of the show, through a spirited display of equestrian skill. Throughout the show, the striking LED wall,

consisting of 12.5 million LED lights, creates an experience so immersive, guests feel as if they have been instantly transported deep in to the natural beauty of the foothills surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains. Clouds roll across the mountains, the sun sets over the horizon in the distance, and the night sky fills with a brilliant patchwork of stunning stars. The equine stars of the show challenge each other in barrel races and other thrilling competitions, all in the name of Dixie Stampede’s friendly competition between the North and South. Audience members even may find themselves called in to help their side to victory. Dinner, the other star of the show, includes Dixie Stampede’s signature four-course feast consisting of Dixie Stampede’s original creamy vegetable soup, homemade buttery biscuit, a whole rotisserie chicken, hickorysmoked barbequed pork loin, corn on the cob, herb-basted potato, Dixie Stampede’s own specialty dessert, and unlimited beverages. Vegetarian meals are available upon request. Guests are invited to start their fun-filled evening in the Dixie Belle Saloon with the side-splitting comedy and hard-driving bluegrass and country music of Mountain Ruckus, Dixie Stampede’s famous house band. The band performs one hour prior to show time. Show times and reservations are available by calling 1-800-356-1676 or visiting www. dixiestampede.com. Februar y 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Wintery Wisconsin:

Vacation Destinations That Can Help You Relax

I

T MAY SOUND contrary to the

holiday hype, but the winter season following the holidays can be a perfect time for a relaxing, soul-soothing getaway. Research cited by the American Psychological Association shows stress increases for many in the weeks leading up to the holidays due to factors like lack of time, commercialism, family issues, and the pressures of additional shopping, cooking, cleaning, and decorating. All are good reasons to choose a post-holiday vacation that allows you to get away and completely relax. Studies show people able to completely relax during their vacations remain happy for longer after returning to their regular lives, while other research indicates regular vacations from the routines of daily life can help prevent health issues, including coronary disease. One area of the U.S. offering a wealth of relaxing vacation options is the Badger State: Wisconsin. Each winter a multitude of leisure seekers travel to the Midwestern gem to enjoy its rustic beauty and recreational opportunities for all ages. Some examples of local amenities include: » Destination Kohler: The only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond resort hotel in the Midwest, this stunning resort offers 62

The retreat can sleep four to six and features a gas fireplace, chef-inspired kitchen, deep-soaking tub, and stand-alone sauna hut, in addition to a fully stocked fridge and full access to Destination Kohler’s 12 eating establishments. » Hunting at River Wildlife: Encompassing 500 acres of the best pheasant and partridge hunting land in the Midwest, this beautiful nature preserve along the Sheboygan River invites sportsmen to enjoy the quest for game birds in the authentic English tradition. Avoiding Established Competitive Marketplaces

entrepreneurs contemplating the launch of their first s m a l l b u s i n e s s ve nt u re understandably try to target what they believe to be a brand new niche market rather than attempt to penetrate an existing marketplace dominated by established competitors. But don’t be too quick to write off those established markets. Quick printing franchises dominated the personal and small business printing industry in the ’80s and ’90s. You couldn’t close your eyes and throw a rock without hitting one of these franchise locations. The new owners of an existing franchise carefully analyzed the competitive landscape that existed in their suburban Chicago location. Here’s what they found: » Printers assessed additional charges for color printing » No delivery service was offered, requiring customers to pick up their printing orders » Printers relied entirely on walk-in

business, ignoring the opportunity to identify potential new clients Based on this information, these resourceful owners began offering a color print schedule that eliminated the customary upcharges, which resulted in an immediate savings for their customers and an increase in sales for their printing franchise. The owners also invested in a delivery and pickup vehicle that brought them into direct contact with their customers’ decision makers, which helped not only to foster valuable new relationships, but also provided them with the opportunity to introduce these same clients to all of the printer’s services that they might benefit from. Sales skyrocketed. Finally, the owners made a strategic decision to target mid-sized companies that were being underserved by both small print franchises and larger printing competitors. After just months, these innovative small printing franchise owners began receiving individual print orders that exceeded their earlier combined monthly sales.

and counting, Alana Joy Scudiere knows how to capture an audience. But now she has the academic knowledge to bring her books to life even more, thanks to her new degree from the University of Tennessee’s forensic odontology program. Scudiere, the author of The NightShade Forensic Files, The Shadow Constant, Phoenix, and a trilogy titled The Vendetta Trifecta, graduated from the program in December. “Honestly, I’ve always been a huge researcher,” said Scudiere. “As a reader, I understand fantasy, magic, and suspending disbelief, but I also see when writers don’t take the time to make sure they understand what they’re talking about. (Think of TV shows and the CSI effect - people believe what they see and read.) Stories that move us stay with us, so I want my readers to know the story came with a good level of accuracy. I think great writers can tell great stories using what’s really out there. So while I don’t think my books will change that much for 64

accuracy, WOW, did my knowledge pool just get so much deeper!” Scudiere, who resides in Nashville but commuted to Knoxville for her classes, has been a writer since she was a child. “I tried to write a Stephen King/Dean Koontz style novella when I was in third grade,” she said. “I don’t think it went that well. But I’ve been published in the genre since 2008. My tenth full-length novel will come out May 4th of this year.” As a suspense writer, Scudiere believes it’s important to get the details right so her stories and characters can flourish. Knowing the nuts and bolts of forensic science gives her a greater knowledge base on which to create. “I had actually been looking at forensics programs for several years, but all were a forensic specialty of some other field that I didn’t feel a full need to pursue (anthropology, archeology, etc.),” she said. “This program is actually both forensic odontology and human

The net result? These innovative entrepreneurs became the third fastest growing franchise out of more than two thousand locations nationally in just three years. There is a distinct advantage to targeting an existing marketplace, even one with multiple, established competitors. That is, customers understand and accept the need for the products or services being offered. Why not offer many of the same products or services already being offered, but where you can differentiate yourself by providing a new twist(s) that will be perceived as offering even greater value to your targeted customers? You may actually discover that it is easier to penetrate an existing competitive marketplace than to create an entirely new one.

As a reader, I understand fantasy, magic, and suspending disbelief, but I also see when writers don’t take the time to make sure they understand what they’re talking about.” forensic identification, so grads can work in a wider array of forensic fields. We have much more training than just dental ID work. The program was laser-focused and very hands-on. So while I don’t have an archeology or anthropology or other background, I would have had to get about four degrees to get this kind of range of forensic training anywhere else.” Scudiere also teaches college-level science classes and raises her children, along with writing. She plans to submit her thesis for publication and pursue forensics work in the field locally. “I’ll be writing faster (and furious-er?) with all the amazing ideas I have pinging in my head from what I learned and saw,” she said. “Some of that knowledge is already in Fracture Five (book two of The NightShade Forensic Files) and more in book three, The Atlas Defect. Books four through seven are already plotted out.”

Financial Considerations in a Divorce B Y J O H N FAWA Z , C H F C ™ , C D FA ™ , C F P ®

IN

THE UNITED STATE S alone, researchers estimate that 40% to 50% of all first marriages, and 60% of second marriages, will end in divorce. Here are some helpful financial tips you should consider if faced with a divorce. » Understa nd Your Socia l John Fawaz Security Benefits: If you’ve been CERTIFIED married for 10 years or more, you FINANCIAL PLANNER™ will be entitled to receive one half of your ex spouse’s benefit or 100% of your accrued benefit, whichever is greater. Because this does not impact your ex spouse’s benefit in any way, it does not need to be a negotiation point in your divorce settlement. » Understand the Five Ds for Tax Deductible Alimony: If you desire that the alimony you pay be tax deductible (it will be taxed to your ex spouse), it must be paid in dollars, under a decree or written agreement, and cease on your ex spouse’s death. After your divorce you must maintain your distance (you cannot live with your ex spouse), and your payments can’t be designated as non-taxable or child support. » Protect Your Income: If you are receiving child or spousal support, protect your income with disability insurance and a life insurance policy on your soon-to-be ex spouse. These policies would ensure that the income you need continues if your ex spouse is disabled or dies. You should own the insurance policies and pay the premiums yourself. You may be able to negotiate an increase in support to cover the cost of these premiums. Don’t rely on your ex spouse or their employer to protect your financial interests. Be sure your ex spouse applies for and is issued coverage before your divorce is finalized. » Cancel “Joint” Lines of Credit: If your divorce settlement makes your ex spouse responsible for the payment of a debt that was jointly incurred, continue to monitor the account to ensure that payments are made in a timely manner. If your ex spouse is late or defaults on a payment, know that it can adversely affect your credit rating. Is Clutter Taking Over Your Home? B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

I

T’S THE SMALL THINGS

in a family that can cause problems. After all, small things can build up and become big things. One of the more common things for families to bicker about is clutter. When one person in the family is a pack rat or disorganized, it can make the environment ripe for conflict. It’s time to go to war on clutter and reclaim your home so it’s a place where it is pleasing and soothing to everyone. » Rule one: If the thing, whatever it is, makes you or someone in your home feel bad, get rid of it. Many times clutter will have feelings attached to it – such as from a job, a person, or event. If the item brings up any bad memory or weighs you down, throw it out, sell it, or give it away. » Rule two: If it’s something that is taking up space and contributes nothing positive to your lives, get rid of it. » Rule three: If you are agonizing over

whether getting rid of something is the right decision or not, get rid of it. » Rule four: While you are de-cluttering, don’t let fear overpower you. As you get rid of your stuff, remember that while you are getting rid of physical items, you are opening doors in your minds and taking charge of your home. How to De-Clutter To begin getting rid of clutter, walk room by room through your home noting where clutter is gathering. Don’t skip any area; look in closets, beneath beds, and in your garage. When you have finished your visual inspection, ask yourself what you saw. For many of us it is two things: Mess and memories. People hold on to items they used in the past that they truly have no use for in the present or in the future. If you have books, sports or fitness equipment, clothing, bedding, home decorations, and other things that you haven’t used in more than a year, get rid of it. Using this standard to all items in your home can help you quickly get your list of 50

off to a good head start. To truly get the upper hand on clutter, realize that you may be holding on to a lot of “things” due to sentimental reasons. However, most of the sentimental stuff that people hold on to is crammed away in boxes and closets never to be seen again. Understanding that memories are in your hearts and not in the items will help your family make a huge leap forward in living uncluttered lives. If clutter is running your life and causing problems in your relationship, get proactive. When you clear out the clutter from your physical environment, you will find that you are freeing your psyche to make room for new experiences and emotional growth – both individually and as a family. children what not to do, but if we’re not careful, we forget to teach them exactly what to do. Instead, we just assume that they should know. If you’re like me, there are times when you really don’t like to hear the word “no.” Sometimes, when you’re a kid, it seems you get told “no” more than any other word, which is why it’s important for parents to set clear expectations with their children regarding how they expect their children to handle this with respect and grace. We know we don’t want our children to sprawl out on the floor with their heads, hands, and feet pounding uncontrollably until their clothes are drenched in sweat just

because they were told that they couldn’t have cookies and milk for breakfast. This would not be considered proper etiquette. A polite way to respond would be something like, “Yes, mom. Thanks for thinking about it.” It is rude to continue to ask for something after you’ve been told “no” or to whine, cry, scream, sulk, pout, or roll your eyes. These types of behaviors are definitely not attractive and show signs of poor self control. It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children how to remain respectful when they are disappointed. This is what contributes to our children having self respect. It’s easy to have manners when everything is going our way, but the real test of our integrity is when things aren’t going our way.

That’s when we really show our self respect. Parents, our children want to please us. They really do want to do what’s right. They deserve to be taught exactly what we expect from them, and then we need to step back and allow them to make choices. That’s how they learn. We are NEVER helping our children when we allow them to demonstrate rude and disrespectful behavior without consequences. Love them enough to teach them and then hold them accountable.

LTHERAPY REMAINS the only non-invasive pro-

cedure FDA cleared to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, brow, and, most recently FDA approved, the decolletege. Ultherapy relies on your body’s own collagen building process for natural and noticeable results. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the surface of the skin. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Ultherapy works. Another factor that promotes safety and maximizes results is that with Ultherapy, we can visualize the targeted areas through an ultrasound image. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months, with maximum improvement at six months. We often find that our neck and chest are left out of the daily skin care regimen, which means they are showing age at a much faster rate than our face. Clothing often exposes the chest to the sun, making it vulnerable to sun damage and signs of aging just like the face. It’s time to treat your chest and neck as well as you treat your face. While there are many energy-based devices on the market that are used to treat wrinkles and lines on various surfaces of the skin, Ultherapy Décolletege Treatment is the ONLY non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest. The Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that takes only 30 minutes. With one single procedure, patients notice improvement in lines and wrinkles on the chest by using safe ultrasound that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production.
