From the Publisher RED ROSES, paper hearts, and

chocolate candy are all representative of February and Valentine’s Day. I remember as a child, I handmade my Valentine cards for my parents with hearts and words of sentiment, signed with my name in crayon and ending with a series of X’s and O’s across the bottom. Those simple cards of sentiment, I later discovered, were carefully saved in a box and treasured by my parents throughout the years. A thoughtful gift that comes from the heart and not a digital representation will last a lifetime. In this edition, many of our advertisers are offering Valentine gifts of sentiment that can and will become treasured memories for you and your families. I am sure you will find the perfect choice for your special Valentine. 4

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2015

Also in this edition, we have taken the opportunity to feature a business that was created out of a need identified by its owner. Ben White, a dedicated saxophonist living in a condo, needed to isolate his musical noise in respect for his neighbors who may not have shared his enthusiasm for the saxophone. Out of this need, WhisperRoom, Inc. was born, and this business has been supplying mobile sound isolation enclosures all around the world. Read about the various uses for WhisperRoom and how it might benefit you or your business. So don’t forget to make this Valentine’s Day memorable. Take the opportunity for your sentiment to last a lifetime like the little treasures I found in a box 50 plus years later and that now have become my treasures.

After 25 Years in Business

H

Has Something to Shout About

OW IS it possible that a single

company that has impacted everything from the Olympics, to internationally renowned recording artists, to television and radio broadcast stations around the world could remain virtually unknown? Well, if you’re WhisperRoom, Inc., the developer and leading manufacturer of portable/modular, sound isolation enclosures, it’s easy to understand. From it’s humble beginnings on the patio of founder, Ben White’s, condominium to their state-of-the-art research and development and manufacturing facility in Morristown, Tennessee, WhisperRoom has emerged as the world’s premier source of portable/modular, sound isolation enclosures. Primarily a “behind-the-scenes” technological platform, WhisperRoom makes everything you hear sound better. From broadcasts and voiceover recordings to vocals and instrumental recordings, WhisperRoom gives serious professionals the edge and allows musicians and vocalists to hone their craft in the privacy of their own homes, without disturbing their neighbors. This month Everything Knoxville is proud to interview WhisperRoom founder, Ben White, and design engineer, Josh Fletcher. EK: Ben, describe for our readers just what a sound isolation enclosure is. Ben: A sound isolation enclosure is a fully enclosed booth designed to reduce the volume (loudness) of sound, either entering or exiting a structure. WhisperRooms are designed, using both barrier materials and decoupling methods, to effectively reduce sound waves. For example, someone wanting to practice/ rehearse using an instrument or vocals, or

for a company testing a noisy product, the primary concern would be keeping the noise, or sound, in. On the flip side, for someone recording voice, vocals, instruments, or in a test environment such as audiology, they are trying to keep the day-to-day noises out of the recording. EK: As a dedicated saxophonist with a passion to play your saxophone in the middle of the night, how were you able to overcome the objections of your neighbors in adjoining condominiums who perhaps didn’t share your enthusiasm for your late night jam sessions? Ben: When the saxophone bug hit me, I lived in the Baltimore/DC area, which happens to be one of the best locations in the world for jazz. Frequently I would go out to places like Georgetown to listen to some really great saxophone musicians perform. A friend and I would refer to it as being “in search of sax!” Usually I would get home in the middle of the night. I remember sitting in my 1100-squarefoot condo, playing my saxophone without actually forcing air through the mouthpiece. I had neighbors on both sides, below, and above me! Well, after about a year, I decided that I needed to either move into a secluded house or build something, an enclosure of some type, that would allow me to play my saxophone anytime I felt creative! After some thought, I decided to build an enclosure. Of course I had to do this while my neighbors were at work, since I was building this on my 12’x16’ patio. My job at the time, a software engineer, often involved working evening and night shifts, so I was able to build by day and work by night! After about nine months, it was complete, and I moved my portable/modular enclosure from my patio into my dining area. It was a

5’x5’ enclosure complete with a 4’x4’ window, a sealed door, and an acoustically designed ventilation system that would allow airflow without allowing sound to escape. It was great! I could play and record anytime of the day or night without the worry of disturbing my neighbors! EK: So while necessity became the mother of invention, when did you become aware of WhisperRoom’s commercial potential? Ben: After months of my friends and I jamming away, with no complaints from neighbors, the thought occurred to me that maybe other musicians could use something like this. I did some research and found that the only sound isolation enclosures on the market, at that time, were made of steel, very heavy, non-portable, and very expensive, all of which made them non-conducive to use in multi-housing situations where starving musicians usually resided. So I decided to quit my job and go for it! I spent about a year better educating myself and seeking professional advice on sound isolation techniques. All along the way, I focused on portability and modularity. It had to be a product that could easily be assembled, disassembled, and relocated by average people. Once the prototype was complete, I filed for a patent, which I ultimately acquired. EK: Describe for our readers some typical applications for WhisperRooms and why they are so important. Josh: We have a broad and very diverse client base. Typical applications include residential and commercial voiceover or vocal recording, professional radio/TV broadcasting, podcasting, instrument practice and recording, audiology, equipment testing,

and conference rooms. Basically, anytime someone needs to either contain sound or keep sound out, they can use a WhisperRoom. EK: These sound isolation enclosures are available in a wide variety of sizes. Just how important is their portability? Josh: WhisperRooms are often used as permanent studios/enclosures but are engineered to be portable, modular structures. Our design allows our clients the flexibility to relocate or reconfigure their WhisperRoom as often as necessary. Some clients choose to leave their WhisperRoom in the same location for years, while others routinely move them to different locations. We also have some clients that utilize WhisperRooms for specific events; for example, NBC, who has 20 WhisperRooms they use to broadcast the Olympics. We built custom crates for them, so they set up the WhisperRooms for the Olympic broadcasts during the events and then store them away in their crates until the next event. EK: I take it then that it’s not unusual to find WhisperRoom enclosures in private residences? Ben: Absolutely! Many musicians now have WhisperRooms in their residences. Some are

Photos by D. Roberts Photography

very well-known professional personalities and others are people, just like me, who just want to sing or play an instrument without disturbing their neighbors. However, there are many other applications that require sound isolation in a residential setting. For instance, voiceover recording, which includes everything from radio and television commercial spots to movie trailer announcements, audio books, and online instructional videos, are typically recorded within the privacy of their own homes. Residential settings present their own host of recording problems, such as traffic, barking dogs, lawn mowers, or just the slight noise of an HVAC system or refrigerator compressor kicking on, which can deem a recording useless. WhisperRoom eliminates the issue of ambient noise to enhance the recordings to the professional level. Much of what we hear on the radio and TV is actually recorded from someone’s home from within a WhisperRoom. EK: To celebrate WhisperRoom’s 25th anniversary, you’re planning a radio remote with Knoxville radio personality Phil Williams. Josh: Yes, we’re excited to have Phil

Williams and Talk Radio 98.7 broadcasting live from a WhisperRoom. Tune in on Friday, February 20, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. EK: Ben, we know that you credit much of WhisperRoom’s success to your associates. Is there anything you would like to say to your team? Ben: Yes, if it wasn’t for my team, many of which have been with the company for 10+ years, this company would be nothing! I sometimes joke that they are more particular than I am and that they treat it as if it were their company! Throughout the years, we’ve all had our moments, disagreements, blowups, meltdowns, etc., but at the core, I know that they truly care about the company, the product, and me! I try to show them how important they are to the company and to me personally. EK: How can our readers learn more? Ben: They can call us at 800-200-8168 or visit us online at www.whisperroom.com.

Valentine’s Day WHAT’S YOUR

PERSONALITY?

How anyone can make the day special

W

HETHER YOU’RE a hopeless romantic or you

don’t believe in cupid at all, everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day in their own special way. From a fancy date or a girls’ night in to a festive class party with the kids, there are activities, and treats, to suit every type of Valentine’s personality out there. Which one are you?

The hopeless romantic

Do you wear your heart on your sleeve? Do you look forward to Valentine’s Day every year as a time to celebrate the people you love? Then you are a hopeless romantic, and you embrace everything that Valentine’s Day stands for. For you, the day should be filled with thoughtful gestures that come from the heart. Start by sending messages to the special people in your life. For a significant other, you might text famous romantic quotes throughout the day to show your love. Then, skip the expensive flowers and get crafty by making sweetheart roses with chocolate kisses, which are available in special pink and red foils for the holiday. Simply wrap two chocolate kisses in cellophane or plastic wrap to create a rosebud shape, then attach your creation to florist wire and wrap it in green florist tape. Add a little note saying how much you care for a finishing touch. This gift is a sweet treat, and you won’t have to worry about it wilting.

The last-minute cupid

If you are the person who waits until the commute home to swing by the store for your sweetie’s gift, you are a last-minute cupid. You like Valentine’s Day, but you are not known to plan ahead. Fortunately, there’s no need to worry with a few quick and impressive ideas for special gifts. To start, a handwritten card is always appreciated. Simply say what’s in your heart – you don’t have to be Shakespeare. When the words are your own, your loved one will know you genuinely care. Next, attach a gift that signifies all the sweet things in life like a tin of chocolates, heart-shaped candies, or cookies, which are guaranteed to make her swoon.

The class parent

In classrooms across the country, Valentine’s Day is a special time to celebrate friendship at school. If you’re the class mom or dad, you know the class will be counting on you to help the kids get ready for this special day and prepare all the cards and goodies. Help students celebrate their friends by having them make their own cards. Use construction paper, ribbon, glitter, and stickers to help your kids make customized cards for classmates. Then, add a sweet treat. Parents can also start a new family tradition at home and show their kids how much they care by giving them Valentine’s Day baskets. Fill the basket with various healthy treats.

The playful platonic

If you think that Valentine’s Day is more fun spent with friends, then you have a playful platonic personality. You don’t need all the mushy over-the-top romanticism – you know the true loves of your life are your friends, and you want to use this day to celebrate everything they mean to you. For example, you might meet with your favorite buds for happy hour or spend the evening at home with your best girlfriends. This is the perfect time to flip through some pictures and take a trip down memory lane. Make your home a festive oasis by having snacks and treats laid out in decorative Valentine themed tableware.

No matter your Valentine’s Day personality, there are simple ways to make the day extra special. From yummy treats to sweet gestures, you’ll show the loved ones in your life you care – today and every day of the year.

Introducing

The Painted Perch A LTHOUGH I INITIALLY

pursued a career in residential mortgage lending, I returned to my true passion for the arts in 2011, which also allowed me to focus on my other passion of becoming a stay-at-home mom to my two small children. I became a DIYer, refinishing furniture for resale, which helped express not only my artistic passion, but also helped supplement our family’s income. It was during this time, after experimenting with a variety of paint lines from different manufacturers, that I discovered Maison Blanche Vintage Furniture Paint. I was won over immediately after trying out my first sample. I became an exclusive distributor of Maison Blanche, marketing it at the retail level in Farragut two years ago before opening my very own retail store, The Painted Perch, in November 2014. Located in convenient Farragut, you’ll discover everything you’ll need to professionally refinish your own furniture. Also, if you’re a novice, we’ll even teach you what you will need to know to start your very own DIY project. Maison Blanche is a rich, thick, creamy, luxurious furniture paint that dries to our signature smooth and velvety finish, requiring no stripping, sanding, or priming. Our exclusive formula contains chalk and will adhere to almost any surface. Maison Blanche Paint Company’s Vintage Furniture Paint does not contain chemical drying agents. This allows for a longer “open time.” The paint is allowed to settle and smooth out as it dries with minimal occurrence of chalk balling and brush strokes and is low in organic volatile compounds, making it eco-friendly. This water-based paint has little to no odor; you can create your masterpiece just about anywhere without fear of reprisal from your delicate senses. Maison Blanche Paint is available in 42 beautiful colors. Finish and protect with one of their four antiquing waxes, three lime waxes, or two varnish finishes. As if that weren’t enough, also check out

our eight colors of shimmer waxes, embossing cream, glazes, antiquing dust, crackle medium, outdoor paint, and our new lime paint. In addition to our extensive line of Maison Blanche products and classes, we also carry another amazing brand of paint called Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint, which is created by a very popular blogger and artist, Marian Parsons, also known as Miss Mustard Seed. This line of paint is truly authentic. It is completely natural, only containing four ingredients, and is VOC free. Whether you are after a buttery, smooth finish or the authentic “chippy” look, this paint is like no other! It is currently available in 18 beautiful hues, and an additional six European colors are being introduced

this month! The Painted Perch also sells painted furniture and home décor pieces. If you’re not so inclined, or if you just don’t have the time, we can even paint your furniture items for you. So whether you’re a seasoned professional or a novice, I invite you to visit The Painted Perch to discover just how you, too, can magically transform virtually any surface, both inside and outside of your home, and achieve the professional results you’re looking for.

Introducing Shae Designs Kitchen & Bath Design Studio

M

Y PASSION for kitchen and

bath design goes back 12 years to my early career as an interior designer. While I’ve always enjoyed the full scope of my creative work as an interior designer, I’ve discovered that my principal area of design expertise has followed my passion and talent for kitchen and bath design. Everything from workspace and flow to lighting, style, and design captures my imagination, and my interest goes beyond these considerations to include the quality and craftsmanship of each cabinet to the proper installation of your designer kitchen and bathroom cabinets. My more than 12 years of experience has also helped me learn just what’s important to individual homeowners. As a wife and a mother of three young children, I’ve learned even more about f low, efficiency, and economy. Imagine your new home’s designer kitchen or baths, or replacing your home’s existing cabinetry, with cabinets that

How Do You View Insurance?

W

H E TH E R YO U require

insurance for personal or business purposes, people in general fall into one of two areas. There are those who focus almost entirely on price and the second group that focuses first on coverage and then on price. “At Tate Insurance Group, we feel that we’re unique in the insurance marketplace,” said Scott Tate, President. “We’re focused first and foremost on our relationship with our clients. That important relationship provides the opportunity needed to properly access your exposures and risks and to offer you the correct coverage at the lowest possible cost.” “If you’re shopping for insurance and you’re asked for a current declaration page, that should be a warning to you,” added Stuart Bilbrey, Vice President. “If a new agent is not doing a thorough analysis, they’re not doing their job, and they’re doing you a disservice.” The lowest priced coverage doesn’t necessarily assure you that you’re actually paying the best price or that you’re fully covered. For example, many unsuspecting homeowners who have recently purchased homeowner coverage thinking that they were saving money may discover that their savings might have resulted from decreased coverage. “Due in large part to hail damage claims, many home insurance providers have 16

replaced their prior coverage with ACV, or actual cash value,” said Stuart. “What that means is that in the event of a loss, you’ll receive only the depreciated value of, say, your roof, and not the actual replacement value. For many homeowners, that could cost many thousands of out-of-pocket dollars.” “The insurance industry is constantly evolving, making it nearly impossible for the average person or business owner to remain on top of this dynamic marketplace,” added Scott. “Many clients who think they’re saving money actually may discover that they’re paying too much in premiums because they’re over-insured.” Tate Insurance Group is designed for that client who wants to be certain that they have the proper coverage to prevent them from potential personal or business losses. By establishing a relationship with each client, they can make informed recommendations that identify areas where you’re uninsured or underinsured or where you may have duplicate coverage for which you’re paying too much money. “Knowledge is power,” said Scott. “The better acquainted we are with our clients, the better we can serve them and the better value we can offer.” The dedicated associates at Tate Insurance Group represent nearly 50 different respected

insurance carriers, ensuring that they have just the right insurance for each client’s unique needs and circumstances. Unlike captive agents who represent a single insurance carrier, Tate Insurance Group can recommend the right insurance company for your needs. Their independence means that your options are not limited. Tate Insurance Group is also a full-service insurance provider that offers: » Automobile insurance » Commercial insurance » Health insurance » Homeowners insurance » Life insurance » Umbrella insurance The advantage to you comes from the peace of mind that results from knowing that you’re insured against any eventuality that life may throw at you. Cancer Yesterday and Today

C

ANCER IS the second

leading cause of death in America, behind only heart disease. Overall, cancer rates worldwide follow a clear pattern of being higher in western, developed nations and lower in less developed countries, with the highest rate in the world being in Denmark and the lowest in Niger. This implies that cancer is not a disease of deficiency but of excess. Various theories about the cause of cancer include genetics, chemicals, viruses, hormones, sunlight, tobacco, radiation, and stress. One factor that is widely accepted today is diet. Eating patterns have changed dramatically in the last century. Since 1920, the consumption of certain foods in the United States has altered American’s physical makeup and their psyche. Per capita consumption of meat, poultry, dairy, sugar, tropical foods, and artificial additives have increased substantially. In addition, chemical and vibrational toxins absorbed from various non-food sources are at unprecedented levels. At the same time, the consumption of whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fresh fruit has decreased considerably. How has this affected the nation’s health? Cancer rates were one in 50 in 1910, one in 25 by 1950, and today one in three for women, one in two for men. Conventional medicine directs cancer patients toward one or more of three broad categories: surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Each of these has developed numerous

subtypes designed to be more effective against specific types of cancer and also to reduce side effects. Alternative treatments are plentiful as well. Sometimes it is necessary to leave the country to utilize alternative approaches, with Europe or Mexico being the most common destinations. Anecdotal evidence abounds that diet and lifestyle changes have been successfully utilized. The most famous example occurred in the 1980s when Dr. Anthony Sattilaro’s story of reversing his prostate cancer with diet was published in the Saturday Evening Post. Regardless of the many theories about the cause of cancer and the effectiveness of conventional treatments, one thing is certain. Neither surgery, chemotherapy, nor radiation address the issue of what caused the cancer originally. This fact should prompt even the recovered cancer survivor to consider transforming their lifestyle into one that provides a better prospect for the future. All plant foods, but especially cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, contain antioxidants and phytonutrients that are thought to inhibit the metabolism of some carcinogens. Of course whole grains, legumes, and organically grown foods support general health as well. Life in the 21st century has scores of advantages over the past. However, the abundance of food choices may not be an advantage. Choosing food that supports your health may be the most important aspect of your life to exercise sound judgment.

power of a new smile on a person’s life is truly amazing,” says Dr. Foncea, DMD at Sequoyah Dental Arts. “Even after 17 years of practicing comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry, it’s difficult to describe the emotional expression of joy that a patient experiences when they view their new smile for the very first time. Transforming Weddings from a Day-Long Event to a

Lifelong Experience F ROM PURELY a woman’s

perspective, I’m not certain which is the most significant event – my wedding day or the birth of my children. Perhaps because our wedding symbolizes the beginning of our nearly 44 years of marriage and the relationship from which we were blessed with six wonderful children, I’d have to say my wedding day. But for so many couples, instead of becoming a memorable and sacred celebration, their wedding day has become a blur. Confronted with a multitude of decisions and deadlines, weddings have become a hectic event – a date and time on your calendar, reminiscent more of a theatrical production than the cherished, life-changing occasion it should be. How many of us would like to take that day back and transform it into an unforgettable experience that you would remember and treasure for the rest of your life? When my husband, Jack, and I first discovered Springtree Farms, our original

thought was to create a sanctuary for our family and close friends. But Springtree Farms, laced with rustic and elegant charm and a rich history dating back to 1797, became more than either of us could have imagined. The secluded splendor and majesty of Springtree Farms provided a reflective, restorative, and recreational sanctuary for the souls of our visitors. What folks encountered at Springtree Farms made them not want to leave. It was then that we became aware of just how Springtree Farms had touched not only our own lives, but the lives of others as well. With our passion and commitment to helping others build and sustain strong marriages and families, we decided to create a wedding venue unlike any other – a customized, oncein-a-lifetime beginning shared with friends and family that would serve as a foundation for a couple’s lifetime together. Rather than the day-long, stress-filled event most weddings have become, our aim was to create a meaningful, life-long, weekend celebration. Our wedding venues and packages are

as varied as Springtree Farms’ natural surroundings. From the “Vista,” which offers a majestic view of Springtree Farms’ rolling countryside and the magnificent Cumberland Plateau in the distance, to the century-old “Parham Chapel,” which offers stunning simplicity amongst a timeless and historical setting, to the lush and secluded “Oak Meadow” surrounding the giant oak framed by the mist-shrouded Cumberland Mountains, Springtree Farms offers every couple the opportunity to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. If you’re currently planning a wedding, I invite you to discover Springtree Farms by calling now to take one of our fun-filled ATV tours. If you know someone who is planning a wedding, I would like to ask you to share this story with them. It might turn out to be the greatest gift you could give them.

FEBRUARY 13 & 14 • 8 PM • BIJOU THEATRE Some artists are able to articulate a vision at the very beginning of their career, while others hone their craft over time, growing into their vision as they mature. “I am definitely in the latter category,” explains Drew Holcomb, a Tennesseeborn, duck hunting, bourbon drinking, first edition book collecting, golf playing Eagle Scout with a Masters degree in Divinity from Scotland’s University of St Andrews (he wrote his dissertation on “Springsteen and American Redemptive Imagination”) who has spent the better

part of the past decade as a professional musician – recording, writing, and touring with his band Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. Drawing from personal experience to craft songs that speak to all of us, Drew explores the universal need to find meaning and joy in the midst of heartbreak and disappointment throughout Good Light. The last song on the album, Tomorrow, opens with the lyric, “Nothing ever turns out like you thought it would.” It’s a theme that permeates the album.

And the Color is… BLUE! U SING ONLY one word to describe the

trend for spring 2015, it would be color, color, color! Coming through a dull, dreary winter, you will be delighted that spring is in shades that give the feel of a coastline of Greece… the beautiful greens of the rainforest, the tones of the Mediterranean… almost like a color cruise of the best things the world has to offer! Four of the 10 colors in Pantone’s spring/ summer color chart are shades of blue and green! AQUAMARINE is an airy blue with a dreamy touch; cool and calming, it’s a shade with a wet and watery feel that mixes well with the other blues and greens in the top 10. SCUBA BLUE conveys a sense of carefree playfulness; even though it’s a cool shade, the vibrancy of scuba blue adds a splash of excitement to the palette, offering a feeling of escape as it is reminiscent of a tropical ocean. The stirring and energizing of this shade takes us off on an exotic paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy. LUCITE GREEN is a soothing shade whose time has really come again. Fresh and clarifying, cool

Fashion

and refreshing, Lucite Green has a minty glow; light in tone, it seems almost transparent and pairs well with both Classic and Scuba. Finally, CLASSIC BLUE serves as an anchor to the spring/summer 2015 palette. It’s a shade that’s both strong and reliable and a favorite of many women. Just as with the sea, because of its waterborne qualities, this shade is perceived as thoughtful and introspective. Overall, it’s interesting to note that the palette this season is not limited to the typical “springy” pastels but a deeper, richer, and bolder mix of color choices as well! Glacier Gray becomes your favored neutral for spring; its unobtrusive nature both contrasts and enhances all of the other colors in the palette… a timeless shade that is assuring and peacefully relaxing. Let us introduce you to spring 2015 and all of its beauty in color!

service in the U.S. Coast Guard, Vince was soon after married and later the father of two children. He could have little imagined that he would soon be launching a more than five decade career in the diamond and fine jewelry business. Since 1961, Vince has been a student of both the quality diamond and fine jewelry industry, and he has put this experience to work in some rather unique ways. “I’ve been fortunate in my career to have met many of the leaders in the world diamond marketplace and to have been privileged to work with many of the nation’s premier jewelers,” says Vince. “I’ve loved every minute of this fascinating and fast-paced industry, and the thought of retiring has never occurred to me.” Vince and his wife of 50 years, having relocated to the Knoxville area, opened an office in the Farragut area in addition to offices in St. Louis and Clearwater. Called Vincent’s, Vince and company purchases diamonds of all shapes and sizes, as well as fine jewelry, sapphires, and rubies, from both individuals and estates. “In addition to purchasing diamonds and fine jewelry at the highest possible prices, we also offer sellers a totally unique selling experience,” says Vince. Vincent’s meets with each client on an appointment only basis in their Farragut office, offering a secure, private, and safe environment. Valentine’s Day can be as much fun for our pets/four-legged kids as it is for humans. Here are various ways to celebrate with your pet: » Go for a long walk. Play ball outside an extra 15 minutes. Cuddle longer than usual while watching TV. » Good brushing. Treat your pet to a firstclass groom. Ms. Carrigan from Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits states, “Pets are just like humans. During winter months, with windows closed and heaters on, low humidity can make your skin dry and scaly. It’s the same with a pet’s skin and coat. A thorough grooming will leave your pet clean and comfortable from head to toe. A blend of moisturizing botanicals, vitamins A & E, aloe vera, and oatmeal are particularly good for your pet’s coat.” » Many dogs love play time with other dogs. A Heartfelt Message

Celebrating Our First Year in Knoxville

ING SPRIVALS ARRAILY D FEBRUARY IS a very special month for me

because one year ago, a long-time dream became a reality in a place called Veronica G Boutique. After many months of searching for just the perfect location, weeks of 12-hour days relocating from our former Loudon location, and designing and building out our new space, we finally arrived at the evening before our big reveal. I remember taking a final walkthrough of my beautif ul new boutique with tears of joy; everything about the store was as I had dreamed Veronica G Boutique would appear one day! On February 5, we opened the doors to Veronica G Boutique to a day filled with well wishes and encouragement from so many of our dear friends and loyal customers that had anxiously awaited the opening of Veronica G Boutique. Many new friendships resulted from our new Farragut and Knoxville customers who were delighted to discover a boutique that offered “just what they were looking for.” We wish to thank all of our customers and friends for your kind support and your many referrals that have made our first year in Knoxville such a wonderful success. We are looking forward to another successful year of sharing all of our wonderful fashions and accessories with you and to meet all of your needs throughout the coming seasons. This month Veronica G Boutique is featuring comfy resort wear for those of you who have been blessed with a fun trip somewhere warm and sunny. For those anxious for spring, we have several of our spring lines arriving, featuring this season’s popular color of blue and a host of other fun colors just for spring. For those that love a great sale, come enjoy our final winter clearance sale through the end of this month. Once again, my deepest and most heartfelt thank you.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2015

Spa 9700’s Inch Loss Wrap is a healthy body treatment that is a toxin cleanse, creating a definite size loss from fatty areas. The treatment uses a solution of aloe vera and USA herbs to penetrate the protein wall surrounding the fat cells and remove toxins from those fat cells into the body’s lymphatic system, where they are flushed from the body. This movement of toxins out of the body causes a reduction in the size of the fat cells, resulting in a measurable loss. In addition, the treatment is very relaxing and leaves the skin baby soft and very hydrated. There are no dehydrating salts, minerals, or clays in the solution and no chemicals! To begin, the client’s body is measured in multiple areas where the solution will be applied. Then the warm solution soaked cotton wraps are applied to those areas where the client desires to lose inches (usually most of the body). The client is then allowed to relax for about 45 minutes. Many clients will use this time to enjoy a petite facial, hand or foot treatment, or simply relax and listen to music. The wraps are removed, and the client is re-measured. There is no need to rinse. Most clients will see results of 4–10 inches lost. The most dramatic results are accomplished by a series of 12 wraps taken four to five days apart. The Inch Loss Wrap is just one of the popular body treatments available at Spa 9700. Call 865-357-SPA1 (7721) if you would like to learn more.

market properties these days. You’ve got print, online, direct mail, social media, and many more, but there’s one tool that truly captures the essence of a home, making it stand out among the rest – video. Real estate listings with a video receive four times more inquiries than those without. Not only does video make your home look good, but it brings better results! A video is 50 times more likely than a text page on the same topic to appear on the first page of Google search results. Google loves video! It’s no wonder since they own YouTube. Did you know more than one billion unique users visit YouTube each month? Is your property for sale missing out on this traffic? Every home for sale online has photos, and many even have a photo slideshow. Home shoppers are bored with slideshows and the corny music that normally accompanies them. Video with a professional voiceover showcases your home in all its glory as if the person is taking a tour in person. Wouldn’t you like your home to be uniquely displayed online with a professionally narrated video versus only photos or a picture slideshow with bad music? A local company, homesandVIDEOS.com, has been helping top real estate agents with affordable video marketing since 2006. They take care of everything from writing the script, to editing, to posting the HD video online to YouTube, Facebook, WellcomeMat, HomesAndLand.com, and others. If you’re selling your home, be sure to have your real estate agent contact Russell Haskins at homesandVIDEOS.com to find out more. Your home deserves to be in HD! Block the Sun, Not the View

T

HE LEAVES have fallen, the sun is

lower on the horizon, and the temperatures have dropped. Outdoor activities have moved indoors, warm weather wardrobes have been put away, and our furnaces are running almost non-stop; all signs that winter is in full swing. But is that the sunshine that has always been a welcome visitor on cold winter days really as welcomed as you think? The UV rays from that winter sun are likely taking a toll on your furniture, draperies, carpets, and wood floors. UV rays can cause irreparable damage to your home’s interior and furnishings in a very short period of time, and that blinding glare from the sun coming through your windows and doors, reflecting off of the water or your patio, can become very uncomfortable. Like sunglasses for your windows, Retractable Sunshades from Screens of East Tennessee can enhance your view of the out-of-doors by filtering the sun while reducing annoying and unwanted glare. Exterior mounted Retractable Sunshades provide a clean look from inside your home without affecting your interior window treatments and operate with your windows whether they are opened or closed. You can maintain your view in the living room and kitchen or opt for a complete “black out” effect in a media room. A variety of fabric types and styles can filter as much or as little light as you desire, and we offer a wide selection of options to match or complement your home’s décor and color scheme. Unlike permanent shade products, Retractable Sunshades are there when you need them and retracted out of sight when you don’t. Usually operated by wireless remote control, motorized shades can be raised and lowered simply and easily to suit your individual needs. They also have the added feature of being operated automatically by an adjustable sun sensor or can be incorporated into many home automation control systems. Many homeowners already use Retractable Sunshades to prevent passive heat gain in the summer months by preventing the sun’s rays from reaching windows, doors, and patios, and they are a great way to keep your home cooler and more comfortable while reducing energy costs. Retractable Sunshades also offer UV protection, which can protect your home’s interior and furnishings. Whether preventing the glaring winter sun or protecting your home from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, now is a great time to call Screens of East Tennessee to receive your no cost, no obligation consultation and estimate for Retractable Sunshades for your home.

is its first line of defense against the searing sun, rain, wind, hail, ice, and snow, and it’s exposed to more potentially damaging elements than any other area of your home’s exterior. The best way to protect your home is to keep your roof in good, sound condition. If you observe something that’s questionable, contact a licensed roofing contractor who can make a thorough evaluation of your roof. A trained professional will evaluate the following areas: » Roof structure » Existing roof materials » Roof flashings » Gutters » Vent pipes » Loose or rusting fasteners They will also check for leaks that may be occurring inside your attic. Take corrective action at the first sign of a problem, before it becomes an even bigger problem that might damage your home’s interior. The best way to avoid future problems is to have your home roofed or re-roofed correctly the first time. Unfortunately, many problems homeowners experience are the direct result of poor quality materials and workmanship from a roof previously installed. The best way to avoid problems is to select an experienced and qualified, licensed, and insured roofing contractor. Request references and check them. Contact the Better Business Bureau as well. As owner of All Dry Roofing, I personally meet with every homeowner. I conduct a thorough evaluation of your home’s roof before making recommendations and discuss possible alternatives. Every roof we install is not only backed up by our guarantee, but all work is performed in a manner to ensure that the roofing manufacturer’s warranty isn’t voided by failure to adhere to required specifications. We further protect your home by using ice and water barriers and lifetime warrantied roof vent boots at no additional charge. We also offer convenient financing. So whether your home requires a minor roof repair or a new roof, I invite you to discover the All Dry Roofing difference.

Bathroom Luxuries: Six Delights to Take Your Bath from Lax to Luxe

T

he bathroom doesn’t have to be basic. Thanks to a wide array of new products on the market – and plenty

of ways to customize – even the most outdated bathrooms can become an oasis of tranquility and a lavish retreat away from the stresses of everyday life. Here are six ideas for transforming your bathroom into a luxurious spa-like space. BEAUTIFUL BATHTUBS

What could be more relaxing than a bubble bath? While some people still enjoy a whirlpool tub, freestanding tubs are growing in popularity, creating a stylish focal point in the master bathroom. Freestanding tub-filler faucets add the perfect finishing touch. Whether your taste is traditional or modern, there is an array of options to accommodate any style preference. Feature an exquisite hand shower with an antique design, including cross handles with elaborate porcelain inlays. For a more modern take on the freestanding tubfiller faucet, there are models with distinctive styling and crisp, cylindrical, geometric shapes. To make your bath even more luxurious, some tubs offer a built-in water heater to achieve the perfect consistent temperature.

WONDERFUL WATER SYSTEMS

Customizable shower systems can help you achieve a spa-like environment. Today’s showerheads offer numerous options to tailor water pressure and flow, whether you prefer a gentle rain-like feel or a more powerful spray. To further enhance the bathing process, body spray systems create a vertical spa experience, providing generous water coverage, and flush mounts give the shower a clean appearance. Be sure to install body sprays with an

adjustable spray face to get water exactly where you want it to create a relaxing sensation of being enveloped by water.

TOWELS OF TRANQUILITY

After a calming shower or bath, wrapping yourself in a soft, plush towel is a must. For the coziest feel, choose products made with 100% Egyptian cotton. This type of cotton has longer, more-fibrous threads, meaning towels are warmer, thicker, and more absorbent. Bamboo cloths are also velvety soft. Towels can be used to help customize your space, too. Choose a color or pattern that enhances your decor, or add monograms for a personal touch.

LOVELY LIGHTING

The right lighting enhances the bathroom’s ambiance while providing the brightness you need to style hair or apply makeup. Install fixtures and accessories from the same product suite to ensure your bath looks as fashionable as it is functional. There are lines of lavatory luxuries, which include corresponding faucets, lighting, towel bars, and tank levers in a variety of finishes, allowing you to design a cohesive, sophisticated space.

VERSATILE VANITIES

Opulence and organization go hand-in-hand

with some of today’s newest vanities. Some pieces are equipped with convenient features like integrated night lights and in-drawer electrical outlets to keep countertops clean and preserve the elegant style of the bathroom. Select a vanity with a granite or marble countertop to make the ultimate luxurious style statement, and complete the design by hanging a beautiful mirror atop it. If you have a double sink in your vanity, look for two matching mirrors, or, for a touch of drama, install one that’s oversized.

FABULOUS FRAGRANCES

Scents have the power to take our mood from tense to tranquil. Visit your local beauty boutique or high-end department store and treat yourself to a selection of scented candles, soaps, and lotions that will help you de-stress and make your bathing routine feel luxe. Lavender, chamomile, and cinnamon aromas are excellent fragrance selections to create a relaxing atmosphere. Use light scented candles while you bathe to enhance your surroundings, or spice up your shower by using scented soaps. With the right fixtures, lighting, and accessories, it’s simple to transform your space from ordinary to opulent. These ideas will inspire you to be living in the lap of luxury right in your own home. Februar y 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Quality Furniture Without the High Prices

I

F YO U haven’t visited Consign

To Design recently, I would like to personally invite you to experience just what you’ve been missing. More and more homeowners, who are relocating or downsizing and who are planning to purchase all new furniture, art, and home décor items, are consigning entire rooms full of furniture and even entire households. The advantage to you is that you have an opportunity to view an entire room full of thoughtfully coordinated furnishings. Buy a single item or the whole ensemble, and, best of all, save up to 80% off the original retail pricing. Imagine a one-and-a-half year old Henredon bedroom suite or an entire living room full of Henredon furniture in like-new condition at more than 50% off. “I Deserve It” Features S TH E housing market rebounds, buyers are looking for very personal and unique elements and features that make them feel special and pampered. While remaining cautiously conservative, buyers are looking for the merger of price point and “design difference makers” that provide something new and different. These “I Deserve It” features often become the most important criteria that buyers use to identify and differentiate potential builders. The idea of “I Deserve It” features became popular in 1991 when trends expert, Faith Popcorn, observed that consumers wanted more than strict utility; they wanted to be pampered and nourished by the purchase. Where else to apply this notion than the home? “I Deserve It” features are an indulgence, an emotional reward that goes beyond standard amenities and accessories. For example, master baths should include “I Deserve It” features such as artful fixtures, spa-type finishes, and glass-wrapped showers. Also, spaces within the home that can be transformed from project spaces to home offices and kids gaming rooms are important to today’s homeowners. “I Deserve It” features put the “wow” into a home and set the standard for the homeowner as they compare the competition of pre-existing homes on the market. If “I Deserve It” features are important to you, then there is nothing better than having a home custom built around your unique lifestyle. Here are five value-based attributes for today’s market for you to consider: 1. Enduring design: Allows homeowners to remain in their home for a long time – perhaps from kindergarten to cap and gown – without the need to move. The home flexes to a family’s changing needs. Enduring design enhances functionality of the home. 2. Enhanced specifications: Homeowners notice and are willing to pay for higher quality materials and sustainability-based construction. 3. Lifestyle-focused spaces: Designs must integrate the rooms, spaces, and features of today’s lifestyles and market segments. 4. Flex spaces: Found throughout the home, these spaces can support a wide range of uses that can be determined by the buyer based on needs and timing. 5. Special feeling places: These provide opportunities for escape and rejuvenation, a chance to nurture the soul. These places take you away from the rat race… if only for a few minutes. Here’s how we incorporate these value-based design attributes into your home design and create the “I Deserve It” features (IDIF): The kitchen: This area is the most significant lifestyle-focused space in the home. Upgrades in materials and appliances are a great opportunity Photo by Lands End Development

to utilize IDIF. Adding design features such as entertainment centers and replacing the underused butler’s pantry are refinements reflecting today’s lifestyles. The master bath: It has become the spa bath; no news here. Escape, nurture, and personality are words describing the function of the bathroom beyond utility. Glass-wrapped showers appointed with benches, and overhead showerheads add sophistication. The master tub seems to be disappearing as well. Flex rooms: A room that you can customize and make your own. Typically located in an informal part of the home, they may take form of a second study, kids gaming room, media room, etc. The room stands ready to serve multiple uses during

the lifespan of home ownership. Breaking the Cycle of Soil

S

OIL IS anything that isn’t part

of the basic construction of an item. It accumulates everywhere! In regards to your floors, it can be dirt, grease, cleaning solution, build up, etc., and it quickly spreads to other areas via your socks, pets, or wind. Have you ever had your living room carpet cleaned, only to wonder why, after only a few days, it looks dirty all over again? Or scrubbed your tile and grout on your hands and knees, only to see the traffic pattern reappear? It doesn’t make sense to clean one area of a home or business and leave the other parts unattended. If one area is cleaned, the soil load from the other areas will quickly contaminate the cleaned areas, rendering your efforts futile. The cycle just keeps repeating itself, so the environment never gets truly clean. Getting proactive will break the cycle of soil by deep cleaning all areas of your home or business at the same time. It can also prevent situations such as MRSA, staph infection, or E. coli, as well as slips and falls. Surface Doc will clean every area inside and out. Not only do they address your

Tired of Wire?

Replace Inefficient Wire Shelving with a Custom Design WHETHER YOU live in a small condo or

multi-level home, a new house or an old one, many homeowners face a common problem: A wire closet system. Wire is inexpensive, but in the end, is cheaper always better? While wire shelving is certainly adequate and easy to install yourself, the non-adjustable hanging and shelving never utilizes all the storage space available. Additionally, there’s a probability of an untimely failure. “We often receive calls from homeowners asking for a custom design after their wire pantry collapses in the middle of the night or they come home to find all their clothes dumped on the floor,” said Dennis Falls, a designer and co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “There can be inherent structure problems with wiring. Often the anchoring system is not sufficient to support hundreds of pounds of clothes or pantry food.” A custom closet is not only more durable, it also: » Maximizes Storage Space – A custom design adds 30-40% more storage space than wire or do-ityourself kits. » Fits Any Budget – A custom closet doesn’t mean expensive. A simple design will still maximize storage space. An experienced designer can help meet almost any budget. » Offers Adjustability – As your needs change, shelves and rods can be adjusted, converting shelves to hanging and vice versa, with no damage to the system or sheetrock. For kids’ closets and pantries, adjustability is a must. » Provides Better Organization – There’s a place for everything, and everything has a place. When you open your closet or pantry, you’ll feel good about yourself. No more emotional stress over feeling disorganized. » Increases Home Value – Whethaer moving in a few years or not, professionally designed closets are high on the list of features homebuyers are looking for today. The amount of square footage a home has doesn’t matter nearly as much as how well the space inside is used. With classic white or a wood-grain finish, the difference is dramatic. Once you have a custom closet, pantry, or laundry room, you will never want wire again!

February in the Garden AS I’M writing

this, our first “polar vortex” of the year is heading south. I hate that term. I hate anything that signifies cold. I don’t want to do anything except stay at home and read and drink tea and hot chocolate (with marshmallows) when it’s cold. My exercise program is shot, and I sit at work with a portable heater at my feet. I’m a cold weather weenie. My one consolation is that I’ve lived here long enough to know that the cold won’t last. In another month or two, the first frogs will be singing, and the trees will start showing that beautiful light green that promises spring. Daffodils and forsythia will be lifting their blooms to a warm spring sun, and all will be right in the world. Until then, there are things that you can do to get yourself and your yard ready. ›› Pruning will be the number one topic on everyone’s mind very soon. I have neighbors that have already commenced to butchering their shrubs. I would

love to leave an anonymous letter in their mailbox, but I figure it would be pretty obvious who the writer was. To keep you from making the same mistakes my neighbors have made, here are the basic suggestions (I didn’t say rules) for pruning: 1. You don’t have to do it. Pruning can be done to reduce a plant’s size, improve its shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation. If your plants look fine, don’t start whacking just because your neighbor is out in the yard whacking on his/hers. 2. Reading the plant tags can save you much labor. Most pruning is done because a landscaper (or homeowner) made an unwise decision about where to put a plant. When you buy a plant at the garden center, it’s usually young and small. Most of them will have a tag that tells you how big that cute little baby plant is going to get. If you read that tag (or ask one of us), it may stop you from planting a bush that’s going to be six feet tall in front of your window that’s three feet from the ground. 3. Don’t prune spring bloomers now.

They won’t bloom if you do. 4. Don’t butcher your crepe myrtles. It makes me want to chase you around your yard with dull pruners. Call us, go online and research, do something to educate yourself before you approach a crepe myrtle with a pair of pruners or loppers. Please. 5. Speaking of dull pruners, sharpen yours before you start pruning. Clean cuts heal well. Gnawed off, torn branches leave a plant open to disease and insects. ›› If you aren’t going to prune, have a close look at your plants. Privet, hackberry, and other weeds love to hide in amongst the shrubbery, and they are much easier to identify and remove now. ›› You have wild onions, and you will soon have henbit. I know these things. It will behoove you to get a start on the weeding before they take over your flowerbeds. ›› Your bulbs are probably up. So are mine. No, there’s nothing you can do once they start emerging except protect them with a little extra mulch. ›› If you’re planning a vegetable garden (and I hope you are), you can start getting the area ready. Add compost to the beds and work it in. Tillers are fairly cheap to rent and are much easier than using a shovel. ›› You can start some vegetable seeds in a cold frame or window, and you will be able to direct sow lettuce, spinach, early peas, and onions by the end of February unless we have another polar dang vortex show up around then. You can even start seeds for annuals and perennials, but please wait before planting tomatoes and basil. They hate the cold even more than I do! ›› Your birds are probably hungry. Much of the naturally available food is getting depleted at this point in the year, and they will be grateful for feeders full of sunflower or safflower seeds, nuts, millet for ground feeders, and suet. They need high fat food to help them keep their weight up. ›› Houseplants may be unhappy. Indoor air is typically dry, which most plants don’t like. Consider a humidifier and a lamp in close proximity. ›› Probably the best thing you can do right now is plan your goals for next year in your yard. Do you want to have an area for entertaining? Do you want to add more shrubs or perennials? Have your beds become overgrown or too much work? Stop by and talk to us if you need ideas. We get bored this time of year and would love some company!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

F

RIGID

FA L L and winter temperatures are challenging not only for man and beast but also for plants. As I prepared to write this article, I realized that many of my favorite flowering specimens like camellia, cornelian cherry dogwood, witchhazel, and Japanese flowering apricot are holding tightly to their flower buds preparing to bloom when the weather is well beyond bitter temperatures. So this month’s plant was chosen for its beautiful foliage color rather than its bloom. It’s not a tree or shrub, either, but rather a beautiful, enduring herbaceous groundcover – sedum. This selection of sedum, in my opinion, is one that every garden has to have: ‘Angelina’ stonecrop, botanically known as Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’. Winter is the best time of the year for this particular evergreen stonecrop. Its bright lime-green to yellowgold foliage, which is attractive during the growing season, turns a beautiful amber to almost orange color in the fall through winter months. Our frigid temperature dips only

intensify the foliage color of this durable groundcover. What’s more, it is an easy plant to grow. Drought and neglect don’t trouble this perennial. In fact, it will flourish in soils of low or moderate fertility as long as they are well drained, in sun or partial shade. It also happily embraces our Tennessee heat and humidity. Vigorous and dependable, Angelina stonecrop will grow about a foot in width in a season with a height no taller than two to four inches. Its golden, yellow-green needle-like, evergreen foliage produces upright yellow flowers that grow four to six inches tall in early summer. Plants will spread and form a mat over time. Space starter plants eight to 12 inches apart for massing as a ground cover. This sedum is great for edging a sunny perennial garden, and it loves cascading over the edge of containers and retaining walls and trailing over rock and stone outcroppings in a xeric garden. In fact, its species name, rupestre, means “rock loving” in reference to the mountainous native habit of plants of this species. I think the versatile foliage color

‘Angelina’ Stonecrop

of Angelina is a great complement to the soft blues, pinks, and greens of other plants and is especially wonderful for highlighting darkleaved plants. Angelina sedum may be divided or pruned at any time, and it can easily be propagated by literally just laying pieces of the foliage and stems on top of the ground or barely covering them with soil. Also, it’s “deer proof,” which is another reason to love this plant. The University of Tennessee Gardens, located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson, are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public except during designated special events. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu.

door that refuses to open effortlessly or comes off its track, and say hello to a semi-frameless sliding door from Creative Reflections? Creative Ref lections specia lizes in the replacement of outdated glass sliding doors with our affordable quality glass sliding enclosures that are far superior in performance and appearance to the doors from the big box stores. We offer a variety of alternatives when a frameless swing door configuration may not be the best option. Our semi-frameless enclosures are manufactured from heavy gauge aluminum and 3/8” glass for a more luxurious look and feel. We also offer taller quality glass units for shower areas. The most important improvement in sliding door configurations is the use of top rollers suspended from a roller system inside the header. Because there are no bottom rollers, the bottom frame is eliminated. Select from several glass options such as ultraclear, low iron glass to highlight your ceramic tile designs or rain patterned glass for greater privacy. You can also add decorative knobs or towel bars to the doors. Our semi-frameless sliding doors also come standard with an easy clean bottom rail, eliminating trapped water, soap residue, or body oils, which can create an unsightly mess. The header bar is constructed of heavy gauge sidewalls, providing greater stability. Combined with the lifetime warranty on the smooth and quiet roller, you will enjoy many years of troublefree service. We also offer a 10 year guarantee, in addition to applying a special glass sealer for easy maintenance. 15% OFF ALL CARPET CLEANING AT SUPERIOR CARPET & Rug Cleaning,

while we cannot deliver perfection, we can deliver excellence. That’s been our motto for more than a quarter of a century. We’ve invested in the training, education, and state-of-the-art technology and equipment to deliver excellence, whether we are cleaning your home’s carpeting or your valuable Oriental rugs. So how is it that we can make this statement? That’s because of my personal commitment to either perform or supervise 100% of all work performed by Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. It’s also our attention to every detail involved in cleaning your home’s rugs and carpeting. For example, did you know that Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning only uses purified water when cleaning your rugs and carpeting? Why is this important you might ask? Untreated water contains impurities, including trace chemicals, minerals, and chlorine, that can reduce the effectiveness of cleaning agents and remain behind as residue in your carpeting, much the same as they accumulate in your home’s plumbing system. This accumulation of impurities in your home’s rugs and carpeting prevent them from being as clean as they can be, which can leave a dull appearance on your carpeting and can actually shorten the life expectancy of rugs and carpets. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, all of our vehicles are equipped with water purification systems, and our rug washing boutique utilizes a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system that delivers pure water. After all, clean rugs and carpeting begin with clean water. To experience the difference yourself, we are offering a special 15% discount as an added incentive to help you discover what thousands of other satisfied East Tennessee homeowners and business owners already know – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning delivers excellence. TENNESSEE NATURALIST AT IJAMS

I

FYI: The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs 12 to 15 pounds. Punxsutawney Phil is 22 inches long and weighs about 20 pounds.

T’S FEBRUARY. Will Phil see

his own shadow? Are there six more weeks of winter weather? Join Peg Beute on Monday, February 2, at Ijams to learn all about groundhogs and their shadows. There may even be a special guest appearance by a local East Tennessee groundhog, aka “whistle pig.” (That is, if it’s not hibernating!) At Ijams, February is also the deadline for registering for the 2015 season of Tennessee Naturalist classes. The state-endorsed curriculum includes 12 offerings that run from March until November, usually one or two classes a month, each lasting two to three hours. Natural history topics that are covered include mammals, geology, birds, amphibians, trees, wildflowers, mushrooms, reptiles, and aquatic systems. At Ijams, nature is the classroom. The Tennessee Naturalist classes are taught mostly outside in the woods, meadows, ponds, and creeks at the nature center. “I loved these classes,” said Laura Twilley, who completed the Tennessee Naturalist at Ijams program in 2013. “I was excited and proud to learn so much about a topic I hold so dear.” The best part is that after completing the classes and required volunteer hours, graduates become certified Tennessee Naturalists. For more information, call Peg Beute at 865-577-4717, ext. 114. Ijams Public Programs Rock and roll that cabin fever! The Ijams education staff has several activities and programs planned to get you out and about

into the fresh air. I will host a Knoxville Urban Wilderness South Loop hike on Saturday, February 7, and a Birding and Brunch on-the-go field trip to Hiwassee to look for cranes and eagles on Saturday, February 14. Dr. Louise Conrad, the Ijams veterinarian, will lead a Wag n’ Walk doggie outing on Saturday, February 21. It’s a great way to exercise your best friend and ask a licensed vet questions on how to keep your canine healthy. Free Creature Feature animal programs are also regular happenings on all Saturdays at Ijams, and on select Saturday mornings, Peg or Jill will be serving breakfast for visitors with the proceeds going to support Ijams programs. For information about any of these programs, including dates, start times, fees, and registration, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110, or visit www.ijams.org/events. Nature Almanac Whether or not local groundhogs see their shadows early in the month, for local

great horned owls, their season has already begun. Most are on their nests incubating eggs by mid-January. The peak of egg laying for Tennessee Valley bald eagles is the third week of the month, and local great blue herons are also beginning to claim their nest sites. Far to the south, in Costa Rica and Belize, ruby-throated hummingbirds are adding extra bulk for the long trip north they’ll begin next month. At Ijams, red maples usually begin to bud out by the end of the month, and at the Homesite, the Lenten roses (Helleborus orientalis) that were originally planted by Ijams matriarch, Alice, begin to bloom this month. Like the Ijams staff, they are hardy souls, regardless of the weather. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year. MurphySwan House Has Rich History

L

OCATED ON TOP of a hill

with a view of the Little Pigeon River valley and the Smoky Mountains, the Murphy-Swan House was built for William C. Murphy, a Sevierville merchant, in 1883. The two-story structure is an example of an extremely rare tripartite-style dwelling built in the Victorian era. The frame house is supported by a solid brick foundation and features one-story porches on the front and rear facades of the north wing and on the front facade of the south wing. Five entrances to the house are located on these porches, which are supported by simple, square columns. The weather-boarded exterior exhibits modest ornamentation with window and door crowns supported by small, hand-carved brackets, corner pilasters with molded capitols, a wide frieze band, deep gable returns, two-over-two wood sash windows, and original shutters. The most decorative exterior elements are the half-circular shaped pediment vents, which exhibit sawn-work detailing, and a central chimney stack with patterned brickwork. Four unique mantels display tapered pilasters and artisan Lewis Buckner’s signature flower motif gouge work. Lewis Buckner was an acclaimed African-American cabinetmaker and house carpenter in Sevier County during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Charles Karns Swan and his wife, Margaret Henry Swan, purchased the house and a large portion of the acreage in 1933. They were owners of Swan’s Bread Bakery, located on Magnolia Avenue in Knoxville. The Swan family, which included four children – Charles Karns, Jr., John Henry, Elizabeth (Heim), and Margaret (Webb) – lived on the farm in the summer and returned to their home on White Avenue in the Fort 56

Sanders neighborhood to live during the winter months. They relied on several hired hands to manage the day-to-day operation of the big farm that included a sizable dairy and a stable of fine horses. Charles Swan was an invalid for several years, but the family continued to return to the farm every summer, accompanied by a nurse to care for him. Margaret Swan was an accomplished equestrian and therefore enjoyed living near the riding stables. The fiery red-headed widow was known for her outspoken temperament. Through her friendship with the Motlow family, who owned Jack Daniel’s Distillery, Margaret managed to obtain a luxury box at the Kentucky Derby, which she and her family used for many years. Ironically, she died as a result of an accident in which she was involved while horseback riding. In 1983, the farmstead was bought by Ted Miller, president and partner of Dolly Parton Productions, and his wife, Linda “Chigger” Miller. They set about refurnishing and remodeling while maintaining the historic integrity of the house. The Millers lived there until 2005, and the house has been vacant since that time. the property and plan to create a venue for weddings, receptions, and corporate events. They will offer horse-drawn carriage rides, reminiscent of the days when the Swan family resided there, along with a variety of unique amenities. They plan to call the place Swann Plantation. Interestingly, the Swan family, who once owned the property, spelled their name Swan. However, in recent years, the owners who followed them have spelled the name Swann. The Colemans plan to continue to use the Swann spelling.

A MAN in his late 80s, suffering from both

dementia and routine falls, could no longer be cared for by his wife in their home. Their only option available was a skilled nursing facility costing more than $70,000 annually. They had a small amount of savings, a modest home that was mortgage free, a small pension, social security, and no long-term care insurance. Since he is in good physical health, he may require care for several years. The wife’s only options are to deplete her savings and sell their home, leaving her with very little security should she require medical attention in the future. Almost universal among seniors is the desire to maintain their independence and not become a burden to their children. And yet, for seniors who have made no financial preparations and then later need assisted-living or long-term care, they could in fact become a burden to their families in both emotional and financial terms – far beyond what they might have imagined. Eroding the security of a surviving spouse and depleting their children’s retirement savings are just a couple ways that families are impacted.

Seven out of 10 people will need at-home care, assisted living or full-skilled care ... Seven out of 10 people will need at-home care, assisted living or full-skilled care, yet less than 20% of people have long-term care protection. Why? Conventional long-term care insurance costs have become excessive, with some premiums even doubling in just five short years. Also, you lose every dollar you pay into it if you never need it. But I have found an exciting and affordable alternative to conventional long-term care that is available for both individuals and couples called Asset Based Long-Term Care. Essentially, you make a one-time investment (or multiple payments) and receive a multiplied amount that can be used, taxfree, for long-term care costs. If you don’t use your insurance, the amount you paid plus interest can either be left to your heirs or withdrawn by you later in life. You can even use IRA money to fund your investment. Is Asset Based Long-Term Care insurance right for you? BOBBY KEYS Looking Back:

I

F YOU’RE A ROLLING STONES FAN or even just mildly aware of their

music, you no doubt can conjure up some memorable sax riffs from some of their biggest hits. Think about “Brown Sugar” and “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’,” for starters. Or how about “Waiting on a Friend,” “Miss You,” or their live version of “Going to a Go-Go?” The man behind those iconic sax sounds was a Texan by the name of Bobby Keys, who passed away last December just a few days before his 71st birthday. In addition to his forty-something year career with the Stones, Bobby also put his musical fingerprints on iconic songs by such musical monsters as B.B. King, Carly Simon, Delaney & Bonnie, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John Lennon, Joe Cocker, and many others. I interviewed Keys three years ago about his autobiography, Every Night’s A Saturday Night. The book is an easy, conversational read. Just like Bobby was to chat with, the book welcomed you into the inner circle of rock and roll royalty. His warm, Texas/ Southern drawl told me that he was the kind of person that I can immediately connect with. He was as country as cornbread and never met a stranger. In discussing his book, Keys said, “It’s been very rewarding to me, because I’ve had nobody come back at me – except one guy said that there wasn’t enough sex and drugs in it. The thing of it is that scene has been pounded into the ground for years and years and years by everybody that’s ever written a book about the Rolling Stones. But most of them knew very little about the Rolling Stones. The thing that

I like about the Stones is playin’ with them! I love their music, and that’s what I wanted to talk more about in the book than anything else was the music.” Because of the myriad of rock greats who he had worked with, I told Bobby that I thought he was the Forrest Gump of rock and roll. He cackled out laughing and said, “Now there’s an analogy! That’s funny! But, you know, I’m really pretty happy with what’s happened, and what’s happened has really been kinda the left hand of God puttin’ me through a lot of this stuff. I never really planned out any master scheme to achieve what I’ve achieved. I’ve just been in the right place at the right time with a saxophone and was able to do pretty much what needed to be done. It’s just the feel of the music and the way rock and roll had an impact on me.” Referring to his Texas roots and getting to hear Buddy Holly perform, Keys said, “When I heard Buddy Holly playing that guitar on the back of that flatbed wagon and Joe B. up there playin’ bass and J.I. playin’ drums, man! That had an impact on me. I fell into the saxophone by accident. It didn’t start out that way. I got

hurt playing baseball, and I couldn’t play football, so I went into the band and all that jazz. Somebody else has been pullin’ the strings – I’ve just been dancin’!” I asked Bobby what the least understood thing is about the Stones' guitarist, Keith Richards. Without even a nanosecond of hesitation, Bobby said, “His temperament. This is a guy that goes out of his way to save the life of a little stray dog in Russia. Keith is portrayed as a dark person, more or less, and he’s anything but that! He’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever known in my life! “But it’s easy to talk about Keith. He’s a pretty memorable fella! I’ve been around him sometimes when it got very memorable. But the thing I remember about him and the most important thing is that he’s the most honest person and the best guitar player. I love playing music with Keith! He’s just got a feel for it that I can really relate to.” I asked about the story of him providing a frog sound on one of Yoko Ono’s albums, to which he chuckled, “Oh yeah, that was indeed a red letter day! There again some hand of Providence touched me there, because I had no idea what I was gonna do. I was looking at John like, ‘Hey, give me some feedback here, son! Help me!’ He just looked at me and rolled his eyes like, ‘You got this one all by yourself, Bobby!’” My final question to Bobby as we wrapped up our chat was what did he hope his legacy would be and how did he want to be remembered. “A guy who loved rock ‘n’ roll music.” Februar y 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

When Ebenezer Misbehaves I REMEMBER a business mentor telling

a group of small business owners that if certain changes were made to our individual business models, we would likely experience the loss of a small number of our customers. I asked, “Which ones?” My question was intended to be humorous, knowing that every small business owner has a couple of difficult clients they probably wouldn’t mind losing. So why do we keep these difficult customers around in the first place? Well, if this past recession is any reminder, new customers can often be challenging to come by, and as a result, we often place a higher than normal value on client retention. But if you have a customer who is disruptive to your business, it may be time to take a stand. My recommendation is that you schedule a face-to-face meeting with your client. Forget the emails and text messages. Sit down with your customer and lay all your cards on the table. Tell them that you appreciate their past business, but describe your areas of disagreement, and attempt to reconcile your

Business

It’s been my experience that it requires far less time to replace a troublesome client than it takes to please them, a goal that is often unobtainable in the first place. differences. In the absence of an agreement, part company. Keep it professional. We have a rule in our own business that we don’t allow any customer to run our company. Now, that doesn’t mean that we are not accommodating or that we don’t accept constructive criticism. But we do not allow a single customer or a small group of customers to interfere with our ability to serve the needs of the majority of our clients. It’s been my experience that it requires far less time to replace a troublesome client than it takes to please them, a goal that is often

unobtainable in the first place. There’s also far less drama and emotional energy invested. While we’ve all been told in the past that the customer is always right, I believe that this expression should be modified to say that “reasonable customers are usually right.” Place a high degree of importance on the valued relationships you have with your customers, but never allow those significant relationships to be undermined by customers you will never be able to please no matter how hard you try.

Happenstance is Hogwash SORRY FORREST GUMP. Recently,

while thumbing the channels, I came across the now classic movie just in time to hear that now famous phrase. “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Call me strange, but that comment bothered me then and even more so now. From a humorous perspective, ok. But realistically speaking, I don’t think so. We do know what we are going to “get,” because almost every decision has a predictable cause and effect. Personal choice is a powerful tool, and with it comes the important responsibility to forecast outcomes. Happenstance is hogwash. While we all make mistakes, we must exercise sound principles in order to reduce the outcomes of unintended consequences of poor decisions. It’s as easy as PIE. P-PEOPLE. We are emotional beings, thus we make emotional decisions; therefore, we must temper emotional tenancies with intellectual information. No decisions should be made without factoring in both feelings and facts. This brings in a disciplined approach to keeping us from the temptation of making unwise decisions without proper thought.

I-INTENTIONS. Of course we mean well. No one wants to make bad decisions. Yet, we do; therefore, we must investigate the whys. Are there consistent patterns? What is the common denominator in the less fruitful decisions? Do you have trusted people you can consult that will ask the tough questions that look beyond the surface? Rarely is it good to make decisions without thinking through the potential results. E-EXPECTATIONS. The best route to having a positive mental attitude comes from assuming a position of expectancy. That trait is developed by the habit of making decisions that produce great results. They cannot be made in haste, which can quickly wreak havoc. Unwise decisions can be like road maps reaching into other parts of our lives. It’s our job to keep our mental radar scanning while listening to the alerts that are there to guide and protect. Our confidence comes from knowing we have weighed the consequences and made the right choices for the right reasons. While there is some “happenstance” to life, we are responsible for what we know. We can’t predict everything, but then again that

is not the point. The point is to avoid that which should have been obvious with a good dose of wisdom and common sense. Optimism is born of confidence. Confidence is the product of expectancy. Expectancy comes from knowing your decisions merit success. Then you are free to pursue life with a vengeance, because you are carefully paving the way for success. Every decision is an opportunity to build, grow, and stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zone: To think deeper, become wiser, and allow our creativity to soar and infuse energy in what we expect to be the result of our decisions. Use what you know. Do what you do. Let others help, and help others. Why? Because happenstance is hogwash. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Dating as a Single Parent

P

UTTING ON the dating hat can seem overwhelming and scary if you are a single parent. The good news is it’s possible to have fun dating without it having a negative impact on your children. The key is recognizing that you make your own rules and that common sense is your best friend. Here are some tips that can help guide you. Don’t Put Yourself on a Guilt Trip Single parents can easily become martyrs. Don’t keep yourself from dating because you feel guilty for taking that time away from your child. If you don’t keep feelings of guilt and worry in check, they can grow and become an excuse for you to avoid a social life and intimacy with others altogether. Be Emotionally Healthy Before you start dating, make sure you are emotionally healed from your past relationship. If you don’t, it is easy to become involved with someone who is not truly compatible for you. No one wants a disastrous rebound relationship. It isn’t fair to you, or to a future partner, if you are only connecting with someone because you feel lonely or because your self-esteem is low. Let your wounds heal as much as possible before entering the dating scene.

Don’t Downplay Your Children When you do meet a person you are interested in, never downplay the fact that you have children. Be proud that you are a single parent, and never feel apologetic that you are a package deal. Being a single parent does not make you less worthy of a relationship. Any person that is worth your time will respect you and your life. Focus on Your Date While you don’t want to downplay the fact that you have children, don’t spend your entire date talking about your kids non-stop. Allot roughly 10 minutes of communication time to the subject of children, if they are brought up, and then move the conversation along to other topics. If you are unable to hold a conversation that does not revolve around children or parenting, your date may feel there is no room in your life for him or her. Let your date see that your whole identity isn’t wrapped up in being a parent. Your Children Most children bond and make attachments easily. Don’t let someone you’re dating interact with your children unless you’re fairly certain they’ll be around for a very long time. If possible, keep your children from seeing the individuals you do go on dates with by

arranging for them to be elsewhere when you connect with your date. With that said, don’t keep things from your children if they ask you. Yet, keep the information you share at an age-appropriate level. You shouldn’t feel the need to hide the fact that you’re going with a “friend” on an outing. In fact, your children will feel more at ease if they have an idea of what you’re doing while you’re not with them. With time they’ll come to see that you’re not just their parent, but an individual, too. They will also learn that it is ok for you to spend time with your friends, just as they do. If you are a single parent and you are ready to enter the dating scene, take your time and go slow. Make dating rules that work for you. Keep common sense in the foreground, and above all – have fun! Showing Value to Others WOW, WE’RE already in the second

month of 2015! Can’t we slow down time? No, we can’t. Time... time is the equalizer for us all. We’ve all been given time, some shorter than others, but nevertheless this “time” is important, because what we do with our time is what determines our happiness, success, and future. Watching the recent events in Paris has caused me to ponder again the lack of knowledge of so many on the value of human life. This lacking value system is vast and complicated, but truly we can do our part to influence a better way, a better ideology by showing those we come into contact with that we do indeed value them and all human life. How do we do it? We start here. We start by living our lives in a way that shows value to others. That’s what etiquette is all about, remember. Etiquette is an outward demonstration of how we feel about others. It’s NOT a list of do’s and don’ts that we check off, and when we do, we can announce that we 66

have good etiquette. It’s an inner belief that others should be placed above us. When we do this, we give ourselves the most valuable and rewarding gift that can be given: self respect. Today, show your children that you value them by setting down your phone, moving away from your computer for an extended period of time, and focus on nothing else but them. Look them in the eyes, listen to their questions, find out how they are feeling today. Today, show your spouse or companion that you value them by doing a small act of uninvited service for them. What would make their day a little easier? Maybe ironing their shirt, fixing them a piece of toast and glass of orange juice, or helping them look for their briefcase. Just do something that reminds them that you care, you love them, and serving them makes you happy. Today, show your colleague that you value them by asking them about something that you know they are concerned with, whether it’s their wayward son, a big account, their

stock portfolio, etc. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as they know that you were listening last week when they shared just for a moment something that was bothering them and you remember. Today, show the stranger at Starbucks or the stranger you pass on the street that you value them by smiling and saying good morning. Just something to show them that you see them, they are not invisible, and you care. It starts small. May we never miss an opportunity to show others that we value them. It’s the only way to be valuable.

ULTRASOUND is Heating Things Up

IN THE MEDICAL field, ultrasound

has been used for diagnostic imaging purposes for many years. More recently, ultrasound has been turning up the heat in the field of aesthetic medicine. The power of ultrasound has been harnessed to perform non-invasive cosmetic procedures with some amazing results.

Two companies have brought ultrasound technology to the aesthetic marketplace. These are Solta with Liposonix and Ulthera with Ultherapy. Both Liposonix and Ultherapy use Before Ultherapy focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Liposonix and Ultherapy work. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of these treatments in Knoxville. Using focused ultrasound to melt fat, Liposonix has been approved to treat Before Ultherapy the abdomen and flanks (love handles). The Liposonix treatment is ideal for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch or 2.5 cm of fat to lose in their abdomen or flanks. It is noninvasive, so it is a great solution if you have stubborn fat but don’t want to have surgery. The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and testing behind its development. It has a welldefined safety profile during and after Before Liposonix treatment with very good patient satisfaction. With a single treatment

we typically see patients lose between one and two inches from their waistline, and maximum improvement is seen after two to three months. Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared procedure to non-invasively lift the eyebrow, neck, and under-chin. Recently Ultherapy was FDA-cleared to improve decolletage (chest) lines and wrinkles. We use it to lift and tighten the skin of the face, brow, neck, under the chin, along the jawline, and most recently the chest. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the skin’s surface. Another factor that promotes safety and better results is that with Ultherapy we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months with maximum improvement at six months. While these ultrasound technologies do not duplicate the results of traditional surgery, Liposonix and Ultherapy are inviting alternatives for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to have been designated one of two Ultra Ultherapy Providers in the state of Tennessee. We have performed more Ultherapy treatments than anyone in the state of Tennessee. Please call Southeastern Dermatology Consultants to schedule a complimentary consultation, and see if either of these procedures are a good option for you.
