I remember as a child, I handmade my Valentine cards for my parents with hearts and words of sentiment, signed with my name in crayon and ending Photo by D. F YOU’RE SELLING your home or buying a new home, the listing price is one of the most important factors for success. For the buyer, the listing price matters, because a buyer wants to get the best home at the best price. For the seller, setting an appropriate listing price is often the difference between selling their home and having it sit on the market longer than desired. Before you settle on a home or a listing price for the home you’re selling, it’s important to evaluate the listing price against certain factors to ensure the price is fair and adequate. Below are four listing price considerations to keep in mind when buying or selling a home. #1: What did other comparable homes sell for?

Listing Price Considerations to Keep in Mind

A home’s listing price isn’t always what it sells for. In cases of bidding wars, the selling price can be higher than the listing price. Or, in cases in which the buyer negotiates well, the selling price may be lower. To make sure

the listing price is set appropriately, do your research to find out what other comparable homes in the area sold for. Keep in mind that “comparable homes” means homes with the same number of bedrooms and baths, similar amenities, and similar lot sizes.

#2: What are competing homes being listed for?

For a home seller, knowing what the other homes in your area are priced at is important, because you don’t want to price yourself too far outside of the competition. Homebuyers are going to compare your home with others in the area, so keep your home in the running by pricing it competitively.

#3: Where is the house located?

The location of the home being sold has an impact on the home’s listing price. For instance, if the home is located next to a commercial facility or on a main thoroughfare, its listing price should be lower than similar homes located in

quieter neighborhoods. For listing prices, everything from the town to the neighborhood to its place in the neighborhood matters.

#4: Are home improvements needed?

If the home needs extensive repairs, then the listing price should reflect that. A seller shouldn’t list their home at a similar price to a home that doesn’t need repairs, or their home won’t sell. The buyer has to put money into the home to make it safe and livable, so the listing price should be reduced by the estimated cost of the repairs. PDATING FINANCIAL and tax strategies are always important, but with the implementation of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2018, it is essential. The biggest change for all taxpayers is the increased standard deduction to $12,000 Yvonne Marsh, for singles and $24,000 for joint CFP®, CPA filers. The additional $1,250 for ages over 65 remained. Consider grouping your itemizable expenses into one year so that every other year there are enough expenses to itemize. For example: Medical Expenses Itemization If possible, have medical procedures concentrated into one tax year. For 2017 and 2018, the threshold for itemizing medical expenses was reduced to 7.5% of Adjusted Gross Income. In 2019, it returns to 10% of AGI. Property Taxes Pay two years of assessed property taxes in one calendar year. The deduction for all taxes paid – state and local property and income taxes – is now limited to $10,000. Charitable Giving » Concentrate your charitable giving into alternating years. » Establish a donor-advised fund. It is an easy process to set up your own charitable fund with as little as $5,000. Donate to it every other year to group your itemized deduction and have the fund disburse its charitable gifts evenly every year. You can make gifts of as little as $250. » Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) become imperative for those over 70 1/2 taking Required Distributions (RMDs). Direct your IRA custodian to disburse some portion of your RMD directly to your charity/church to exclude that amount as taxable income. The new law also changed the “kiddie tax” rates so that investment income earned by minors will be taxed at Trust tax rates – a whopping 37% tax once investment income reaches $12,500. You may think this doesn’t matter to you, but think again. I often see IRA beneficiary forms set up incorrectly so that a minor could ultimately inherit an IRA. And, you guessed it – it’s considered investment income that is subject to these new rates. Now is the time to review all of your pre-tax account beneficiary forms. virtuoso, Jonny Lang, on February 27th. If you’ve never seen him perform live, you’re in for a real treat. I caught up with Jonny to talk about his new CD, “Signs,” and about what fans can expect from his show. Jonny started off by sharing what fan reception to “Signs” has been. “It’s been really positive for the most part, I think,” said Jonny. “We’ve been having some really good reviews about it. It seems to be reflecting at the live shows. There are some more people coming out. A lot of people seem to know the lyrics. They sing along. Those are all the things you want, you know?” And what are fan favorites from “Signs?” “It’s all over the place, really!” said Jonny. “I haven’t seen one that people have tended towards. It seems to be pretty evenly dispersed – maybe five or six of them – so that’s pretty cool!” When I asked how recording “Signs” was different from his previous six albums, Jonny said, “I can’t say that a whole lot was different about the approach other than just life changing for me. You’re just growing as a person. What that did, naturally, to inform the style and subject matter of the songs. I guess I never really go into making a record or writing a song – or anything else in life, really, for that matter – with a plan, really. I guess the first time I felt that feeling of whatever you want to call it, this inspiration, that unbridled

sort of inspiration where you can just let go. “All of a sudden you’re not thinking. Something’s happening, and it’s just flowing. It’s like, ‘Wow! I can experience life like this! It’s crazy! I don’t have to strive or struggle or think my way through it. I didn’t know this part of life could exist.’ And when I first felt that, I just chased it for the rest of my life! It continues to be that way. As a lot of the people that I work with – and my wife and a lot of my friends – could probably tell you, I could stand to be a whole lot more proactive about the way I do things. And they’re right, I’m sure. I think that I have to learn how to do that, because I tend to get in my own way. That was a pretty long answer to your question, and I really didn’t answer your question.” I interjected, “You kinda did! Because you inspired a subset to that question, because I’d read that, like me, you’re a believer, too. The question you inspired to me was do you feel that God gives you songs in the process?” “I think God’s influence in my life – in anybody’s life – we shouldn’t really designate it to the moments that feel magical,” said Jonny. “I think it starts when you arrive here on this earth. He builds a lot of it into you. It’s my thinking, anyways. We’re built with the tools that we need to accomplish what our purpose is. Agreeing with the plan with that purpose, on our part, is a tricky part. But yes, I do. There are moments where it’s like I feel there’s another person at work. There are times where I feel that didn’t come from me. I never even come close to thinking this or

feeling that way before or conceiving of what just came out of me. So yeah, I would definitely give God the credit for something like that even though I couldn’t give you empirical data, empirical proof. But it just seems there are these – I don’t know, man! It’s like there’s this radio signal that’s constantly going, and sometimes your antenna picks it up.” With our call wrapping up, I asked Jonny what fans can expect at the Knoxville show and other shows during this tour. “Shoot, I don’t know what to expect from our shows! Ha! Ha! A lot of new stuff off the new record. We have a form of each song. There’s a basic form, arrangement wise, that’s in that. There’s a lot of room to change things – the intricacies of it within the song. We all know each other so well musically and trust each other with those moments to where most of the time it ends up being a cool thing. Sometimes we fall on our face real quick and then pick ourselves up and hope nobody saw! Ha! Ha! Dollywood Announces Spring Mix Music Series Schedule, Festival of Nations Lineup

ITH DOLLYWOOD’S “Season of Showstoppers” now on the horizon, and with the buzz surrounding Dollywood’s Spring Mix continuing to grow, excited concert-goers can begin circling dates on the calendar as the lineup has been set for the park’s impressive new music series. During 2018, guests also will be treated to an exciting new Festival of Nations lineup, thrilling summer shows, and more great entertainment throughout the season. If there has ever been a year to take advantage of the value of a Dollywood season pass, this is it. With a number of new entertainment options (all included with park admission) available throughout the season, guests certainly will want to make several return visits in 2018. The season begins with Dollywood’s Festival of Nations (March 17 – April 9), a fascinating festival that offers a captivating glimpse at a number of cultures from across the globe. Three internationally-known groups – all new to Dollywood in 2018 – headline this season’s festival. Opening This Month at Biltmore: First Large-Scale Exhibition of Costumes from Oscar-Winning Film “Titanic”

UICKLY ON THE heels of the

20th anniversary of 1997’s blockbuster hit “Titanic,” Biltmore will launch a new exhibition, Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie. The exhibition offers dazzling attire worn by actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and many others from the film’s large cast. Staged throughout Biltmore House, the exhibition opens February 9 and runs through May 13. With these costumes, guests will have perfect examples of the luxurious wardrobes favored by transatlantic travelers like George and Edith Vanderbilt in the early 1900s. Award-winning designs in America’s Largest Home This is the first large-scale exhibition of fashions from Titanic, which won a record 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Costume Design. Showcasing the work of Oscar-winning designer, Deborah L. Scott, the garments evoke the lifestyle of the era when voyages on the great ocean liners of the early 20th century offered high society and luxury on ships known as “floating palaces.” First class passengers took every opportunity to see and be seen in the finest fashions of the time. And, just like Jack and Rose, the fictional couple at the heart of Titanic, the days at sea fostered friendships and romances, including Vanderbilt’s courtship of Edith Stuyvesant Dresser. “We are all fascinated with Titanic and this moment in history,” said Leslie Klingner, Biltmore’s curator of interpretation. “It’s intriguing to think about what was happening in the daily lives of the Vanderbilts and how closely that connected to what the filmmakers showed onscreen.” For example, the formal dinner scene in which Jack joins the first class passengers takes place in the ship’s dining room. Costumes from that scene are set in the Banquet Hall where the Vanderbilts and their house guests dined in full evening dress for their evening meals. Klingner notes that many of the gowns displayed in the Second Floor Living Hall were worn by an actor portraying a real person who actually sailed on Titanic. They included the Astors and the Guggenheims – couples the Vanderbilts would have known or were familiar with. The costumes are luxurious and highly detailed, featuring accessories such as fans, elaborate jewelry, and long gloves. “Guests at Biltmore would have dressed in a very similar manner,” said Klingner. “I can imagine them assembled in the Living Hall, taking a moment to visit with fellow guests or admire the paintings before going down to dine in the Banquet Hall.”

New guided tour debuts during Glamour on Board The exhibition is part of the self-guided tour through Biltmore House and is included in estate admission. Guests interested in a more in-depth experience may wish to take the Glamour on Board Guided Tour, created and designed by Biltmore’s museum services team especially for this exhibition. Hosts conducting the tour will provide colorful details about the costume design process, with insights into the elegance of the era’s fashions, culture of the times, connections with the Vanderbilts, and making of the film. This guided tour requires a separate ticket. Big Ears 2018 Continues to Expand and Grow W

of the Big Ears Festival around the corner, organizers are revealing the final details and finishing touches for the fully immersive, kaleidoscopic weekend hailed as “…the most adventurously programmed festival in America” by Rolling Stone. Big Ears is proud to announce more than a dozen new artists and performances. New additions to the Big Ears lineup include: Guitar wizard Marc Ribot returns to Big Ears for his third festival with two very different performances, including a duo with inimitable singer/guitarist David Hidalgo, front man for the American rock band Los Lobos. They’ll share a unique vision of classic American country and rock tunes, “border music” favorites, and a few classics from the Los Lobos songbook. Ribot’s punk/funk band Ceramic Dog, featuring Shahzad Ismaily and Chas Taylor, will return to the festival ahead of its first new album in four years. Soulful R&B singer, songwriter, bassist, and rapper Meshell Ndegeocello will make her Big Ears debut on the heels of her eagerly anticipated new recording, Ventriloquism,

which features her always unique approach to classic tunes by Prince, George Clinton, Force MD’s, and Sade, among others. Trailblazing virtuoso improvisers Okkyung Lee (cello), Ikue Mori (computer electronics), and Ned Rothenberg (woodwinds) will collaborate with legendary British saxophonist Evan Parker, in his Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, as well as presenting their own individual solo performances. Yuka C. Honda will present her solo show, Eucademix, and appear as a special guest on celeste and electronics for Nels Cline’s big band opus, Lovers, performed with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra and others. Drummer Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin & Wood will also present one of his special solo excursions. Saxophonist and flutist Jon Gibson, an original member of Philip Glass’ original ensemble in the early 1970s, will present his fully immersive classic from that time, Visitations, and perform solo works for saxophone and flute during the weekend. Violinist Johnny Gandelsman, a member of the acclaimed string quartet Brooklyn Rider, will present his recently recorded

program of J. S. Bach’s complete Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. Brooklyn Rider will be performing their own program, as well as collaborating with Béla Fleck. Some very special additional performances have been added: For only the second time in his career, composer and saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell will present the four interactive TRIOS that recorded his chart-topping 2017 ECM recording, Bells for the South Side, and will add Trio Five, a separate concert with a fifth interactive trio, joined by Junius Paul and Vincent Davis. In addition to the live world premiere of William Eggleston’s MUSIK, instrumentalist Aine O’Dwyer will offer a second concert of her own compositions. Saxophone powerhouse Mats Gustafsson (of the Thing) will combine forces with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). Astonishing drummer Paal NilssenLove (also of the Thing) will go head-to-head with guitarist Arto Lindsay. of Art presents Press Ahead: Contemporary Prints Gifted by Helen and Russell Novak February 2 through April 15, the first showing of the largest group of prints ever donated to the KMA. The exhibition features 38 works by great 20th and 21st century artists from around the world, including Roger Brown, John Buck, Christo, Lesley Dill, Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, Red Grooms, Sol LeWitt, Barbara Takenaga, William T. Wiley, Brad Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Tom Huck, Jiha Moon, and Hans Schabus. Some of the artists represented are leading printmakers, while others work primarily in other media but became interested in collaborating with master printers in order to realize their ideas in print-based formats. The KMA’s selection includes great examples of each artist’s work, prints produced in small editions, and those representing a broad range of printmaking techniques and formats (including sculptural and book-format prints). In 2015, Chicago collectors Helen and Russell Novak made the largest gift of prints in the museum’s history. The Novak’s collection includes thousands of contemporary

prints acquired during a period of more than 30 years. The Novaks became interested in the KMA thanks to Helen’s childhood friend, Knoxville educator Marilyn Liberman. The Novaks’ desire to place works at the KMA was sparked by the strength of the museum’s existing contemporary art collection, the museum’s long association with printmaking, and the local presence of the University of Tennessee’s School of Art’s top-ranked printmaking program. Zoo Knoxville Has Third Consecutive Record Attendance Year in 2017

welcomed 495,055 visitors in 2017, setting a new attendance record for the third year in a row and exceeding the record set in 2016 by 21,376 people. While more than 255,000 zoo-goers came from Knoxville and the surrounding counties, almost half of all visitors (49%) were tourists whose impact to the local economy amounted to $28 million. “With the opening of Tiger Forest at the Boyd Family Asian Trek in 2017, we completely changed the way our guests experienced the zoo with the most immersive habitat for tigers and cranes in the country,” said Lisa New, Zoo Knoxville President and CEO. “These beautiful and complex habitats emphasize our commitment to saving

these animals from extinction as part of a collaborative effort with accredited zoos nationwide. I believe our record attendance reflects the desire our visitors have to connect with wildlife and their support of the conservation work being done here in Knoxville.” “As an anchor destination for the Magnolia Avenue Corridor Plan, we are happy about bringing more people to East Knoxville,” said Pete Claussen, Chair of Zoo Knoxville’s Board of Directors. “Zoo Knoxville continues to

be Knoxville’s most visited attraction, and it is our strategic goal to continue to bring more tourists to Knox County.” The attendance for 2017 exceeded the zoo’s previous record, set the prior year in 2016, when 473,679 guests visited the zoo. Zoo Knoxville is open year-round, and October was the highest attended month with 76,331 visitors. According to zip code data, visitors came from four continents and as far away as New Zealand. In March 2018, Zoo Knoxville will open new habitats for silvered-leaf langurs and white-handed gibbons in the Boyd Family Asian Trek that will allow guests to explore their habitats on multiple levels. NOXVILLE KNOWS who Beth Hart is, if for no other reason than by reading our two interviews with her in Everything Knoxville. We’re about to get to know her quite a bit better, because she is going to be performing at our own Bijou Theatre on March 1st. I caught up with Beth by phone at her home in SoCal. After we caught up on personal news, I asked how her latest CD, “Fire on the Floor,” was doing for her. “People really seem to love that record when we play it live,” she said. “We don’t play all the songs from it every night. We play different songs from the record at different times. If you go to all the shows on that tour or whatever, you’ll see the whole record at some point. We’ll do maybe four or five songs off the record and then switch them out on different nights. It’s just gone over like gangbusters, and it’s funny because I loved ‘Better Than Home’ even better as a record. But it seems like ‘Fire on the Floor’ goes over better for live shows for some reason. I don’t know, maybe because ‘Better Than Home’ was a lot of ballads. ‘Fire on the Floor’ is more up-tempo. “I started making a new record though with Rob Cavallo, and we just got into the studio 10 days ago. We started our first round for four days. We have Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, which is really exciting for me, because I’d only done the show with Jeff Beck that he

had me do with him years ago. Vinnie was the drummer in our band. So it’s amazing now that I got him for one of my records! I can’t believe it! And Chris Chaney on bass and Stephen Pierce on guitar and, of course, Rob is playing guitar. It’s just a really great group of people, and it’s so fun making a new record! So I’m excited about that.” As for a crowd favorite from the album, Beth said, “Yeah! It’s like ‘Bang Bang’ had that kind of thing – the Bang Bang Boom Boom record – where people just want to have fun with those songs and dig in. It’s just been really, really cool. My band plays it so great! My band right now is playing better than I ever heard them play. It’s just like we’ve really gelled and become like a band. Everything is effortless and really fun! I love them so much! We’re going to start back up here in a little over a month. I’m really looking forward to that. I miss them! I see them all the time, but I still miss them!” The chat switched to what we can expect at her Knoxville show. “This has always been what I do, and it probably will always be what I do,” said Beth. “We go out and just play songs from every record, and we change it up night after night. That way it’s always seemingly fresh to us and then, hopefully, that energy translates to the audience. I think more than anything I just want that little bit of on-the-edge energy there. And what I try to do is don’t assume that people have all the records. Sometimes

people will have one record of yours, so maybe we have a shot at giving them at least a song or two that they know really well or that they really like. It’s not like I’m a hit song person, you know what I’m saying? Where I know that I have certain songs that are, ‘Oh, my, my, my!’ You know what I mean? So I mix it up night after night and just truly try and have fun with that. “We’re definitely going to be playing some stuff off of ‘Fire on the Floor’ and then stuff from all the other records, but I’m not sure exactly what songs yet, because each night I make a new little set list. So we’ll see, but it will be a mix. But then I’ve got my stuff where we’re rockin’ and we’re doing some soul stuff. And then I sit and play by myself at the piano. And then John and I do an acoustic set where I play some bass and some acoustic guitar with him. Tinsmithing Workshop with David Drake February 10 from 9 am to 1 pm On February 10, learn all about the use and trade of tin in the 18th century from local professional Tinsmith, David Drake. This workshop is an instructional, handson workshop, where participants will have the chance to make their own tin creation! Participants will learn the basic use of hand tools used in the tinsmithing craft. During this workshop, participants will lay out a pattern, cut, pierce (punch) a design, fold, form, and solder a candleholder using hand tools. This workshop will be limited to six participants. OCK TO BACH is back! The sixth Oak Ridge Rock to Bach Music Festival, presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, will showcase talented local musicians on Saturday, February 10, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. A feast for music lovers, Rock to Bach will feature 19 live performances from 10 am to 8 pm. The performers include bands with singers, such as the Ridge City Ramblers and Mt. LeConte Jug Band, as well as string quartets, a flute choir, a jazz band, and two klezmer bands. Solo artists are Allen McBride on the hammer dulcimer and vocalist Kelle Jolly, one of East Tennessee’s most celebrated jazz musicians. She is the host of Knoxville’s radio show on WUOT 91.9FM, Jazz Jam with Kelle Jolly, an hour-long show on Friday at 8 pm that celebrates great local, national, and international singers of jazz. In addition, the Rock to Bach festival will have food and drinks for purchase, including

ahead and get this out of the way: Yes, you will likely have damage to your plants from the cold. There are three types of damage that may have occurred. The first is when the root ball of a plant freezes because the soil around it has frozen. This is most hazardous to plants that were dry when they froze and plants that are borderline hardy here. (Yes, we are Zone 7, but we are having a Zone 6 winter.) Those plants may not recover. The second type of damage occurs to evergreen plants when their roots and stems are frozen but the sun gets warm enough for the needles/leaves to thaw. Those needles/leaves then lose water through transpiration but cannot draw more up because the stems are frozen. This doesn’t usually kill the plant but will

kill some of the exterior foliage. There will also be damage done to those poor unfortunate plants that had already started budding in the balmy November/ December weather. The bloom quantity may be reduced, and there may be areas of the plant that do not leaf out. The bottom line is that we are not going to know the extent of the damage until late spring. If you remember the freeze that happened a few years ago that killed so many plants, you will also remember that several people pulled up plants that would have survived if they had been a little more patient! If there is flexibility in the branches or green in the stem, leave it alone. Call or email us if you have questions. As for my to-do list for February, it is mostly all the things that didn’t get done in January because it was too dang cold!

» When it does warm up, do your walk around the yard to check on things. Lots of plants look pretty sad right now, but don’t panic. Mother Nature is resilient. » Use the miserable days to plan all the lovely things you want to do in your yard once the cold has moved back up north where it belongs. » If a vegetable garden is in those plans, this is a good time to get it ready by tilling processed manure and compost into the soil. All those nutrients will break down and be available in the soil when planting time comes. » By the end of the month, it will hopefully be warm enough for you to sow greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onion. » If you have a cold frame, you can start cold weather veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. » Perennial herbs can be planted indoors, but wait a little longer on annuals and warm season vegetables. I know you want a real tomato, but I promise that if you plant a tomato before the ground is warm enough, it will not bear! Patience, grasshopper! » I hope you have mulch around your plants. If not, you can still put it down to protect surviving plants from the freeze/thaw cycle. » Yes, you can prune things now. Do not go out and just start whacking! Call us, Google it, or do something so that you do not destroy trees and shrubs that are already stressed from the brutal cold. Also, do not prune your spring bloomers or you will have no bloomers. » This is a great time to cut out the privet, honeysuckle, and wild grapes that hide amongst your shrubs. You can also get some really good exercise pulling weeds. » Do not forget the birds. They are having a hard time in the cold and will really appreciate a full, clean feeder. High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet will help them stay warm. A heated birdbath will also make their lives ever so much better. It is hard to drink ice. Some of you may have seen that we have a new cat. Her name is Honey Bun, and her job is to help keep the mice out of our birdseed. She is not a year old yet and has been a little hazardous to some of our glass items! She is very sweet, however, and she and Oatmeal Cream Pie are ready for you to come visit them. THIS

T I M E of year many of us seem to get a little “down in the dumps.” The temperatures are cold, the skies are gloomy, and the garden is taking a rest. We have a tendency to stay cooped up inside and not explore nature. However, if you can bring yourself to venture into the garden, Mother Nature has a lot to offer. You might be surprised at the beauty you come across. Take a look at a public garden or even a friend’s for inspiration for your own. Many plants provide winter interest. Winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata) shows off clusters of cheerful red berries, red-twig dogwood (Cornus sericea, C. sanguinea, and C. alba) reveals bright red stems, and ‘Florida Sunshine’ anise (Illicum parvaflorum) displays vibrant chartreuse foliage. These plants become the center of attention in the winter garden. One particular example I have grown fond of is Cotoneaster lacteus (syn. Cotoneaster parneyi), commonly known as parney cotoneaster. The genus Cotoneaster contains at least 70 species, but unfortunately, their use is limited in much of the United States due to several factors. As Dr. Michael Dirr notes, most species are susceptible to excessive heat, heavy wet soils, lace bug, mites, and fireblight, which contribute to their relatively short life in the landscape. With that being said, C. lacteus is truly the exception to the rule – it is virtually pest-free. Parney cotoneaster was introduced to the U.S. in 1930 from western China. Growing to between six and eight feet tall and wide in 10 years, its habit is somewhat upright and spreading, with graceful arching branches. This evergreen produces two to three inch clusters of small white flowers in mid May to early June. The flowers give way to beautiful bright red berries that remain on the plant through winter, making this cotoneaster a showstopper. The dark green, deer-resistant foliage provides the perfect backdrop and contrast to the berries. This cotoneaster grows well in full sun to part shade, and, while it is very drought tolerant, it performs best in moist, well-drained soils. The specimen at the UT Gardens, Jackson, flourishes beautifully with virtually no care along the parking lot curb near the gazebo. C. lacteus works well in groupings or as a mass planting and is a wonderful addition to any mixed shrub border where additional winter interest is desired.

For a plant that is resistant to drought, diseases, and insects, as well as very low maintenance, tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions, and interesting in winter, parney cotoneaster is surprisingly underused. I encourage you to visit the UT Gardens in Jackson or Knoxville to admire parney cotoneaster at its peak at a time when many plants are taking a rest. Consider adding this cotoneaster, and other winter beauties, to your own garden landscape.

Landmark African-American Church in Peril BY CARROLL MCMAHAN

EVIERVILLE’S New Salem Baptist Church has weathered many storms since Isaac Dockery and a small, determined band of AfricanAmerican craftsmen built the church in 1886. Nevertheless, the storms of the past pale in comparison to the tempest facing the future of the oldest brick church remaining in Sevier County. After the church was built using bricks fired at an onsite kiln, members joined together as a singing group to raise money. Traveling throughout East Tennessee, the singers raised funds for a piano, hymn books, and Sunday school supplies, as well as wire fencing for a cemetery. The church was not only used to fulfill the community’s spiritual needs, but also served as a gathering place for social activities. During the first half of the 20th century, there were very few places available for African-Americans to gather for special celebrations. The church served the black community until the 1950s, when the last services were held by the descendants of the original congregation. Since that time, the church has been used by other congregations, and the historic integrity has slowly chipped away. The last time the church was used as a worship space was sometime in the 1990s. By 2006, a problem with mold prevented the use of the building entirely. But some of the descendants of Isaac Dockery were determined to save the historic structure. The original bell tower and pulpit furniture have been removed, and the overall interior has been altered significantly. Even with these changes, the church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, and a Tennessee Historical marker was placed on the grounds in 2006. The building suffers from lack of maintenance and ventilation issues, which compromise the structure. In 2010, the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance placed the building on the list of East Tennessee’s most endangered treasures. 52

Led by Alverrene Bridgeforth, New Salem Restoration Task Force has been working since 2011 to raise funds to save the church. The task force has been disheartened at times with the financial outlook, such as writing grant proposals only to be rejected, as well as dealing with state and local codes. However, they have persevered and remain hopeful that they can somehow reach their goal. The Dockery family has had its reunion in Sevierville every summer since 1972 and gathers by the hundreds on the church grounds for a picnic. The task force has posted a thermometer in the church’s front yard, with lines marking the steps to their goal of $500,000. In addition to soliciting donations, fundraising events include Isaac Dockery Day, an annual dinner and silent auction, and a gospel concert in partnership with Knoxville’s Cokesbury United Methodist. This year the task force will be selling 2019 commemorative calendars. “My husband’s great grandfather donated the land for the church, and I feel it’s very important to preserve this historic site for posterity,” said Dr. Carolyn Henderson, a local preservation activist. “I have been soliciting donations to raise the required 25% match of a new grant proposal, which could make our goal a reality.”

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

In the Footsteps of Sergeant York: A Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History

ETWEEN 2006 AND 2 0 0 9 , an international team

of historians, archeologists, and geographers traveled to the Western Front battlefields of World War I to rediscover and document where Fentress County-native Sergeant Alvin C. York made his heroic stand against overwhelming odds and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage under fire. In the Footsteps of Sergeant York, the exhibition now open at the Museum of East Tennessee History from the Museum of the American Military Experience, showcases this groundbreaking research and allows visitors to retrace the steps of one of America’s best-known military heroes. Alvin C. York is one of the most decorated and colorful soldiers of World War I. York was born of humble beginnings in Pall Mall as the third of 11 children and raised in a one-room log cabin. Nearly 100 years ago, on October 8, 1918, York displayed valor and courage worthy of a Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur, and later, a major motion picture, when he single-handedly killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 more in a battle in the Argonne Forest in France. Until now, the movie Sergeant York, staring Gary Cooper, has provided the most compelling story of York. In the Footsteps of Sergeant York runs through July 8th. The exhibition, produced by the Museum of the American Military Experience, includes 18 exhibit panels, eight exhibit cases of artifacts, a documentary film, and a supporting interactive website. The East Tennessee Historical Society augmented the exhibition with East Tennessee stories and artifacts. It includes a bible carried by Sgt. York during WWI and later carried by a friend’s son who had it with him in WWII and every day until he died at the age of 94, as well as examples of American and German gas masks, U.S. uniforms, medals, banners, firearms, and wartime souvenirs. One of the most compelling features of the exhibit is that visitors are invited to walk through a life-sized trench much like the ones American troops hunkered down in during the war. Museum visitors will develop a sense of York’s home life through a sampling of items from the York home, experience the sounds of war and machine gun fire, view 56

National Juried Exhibition of 2018 in the Upper Gallery The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present its 12th annual National Juried Exhibition, a new exhibition featuring selected works from 44 artists throughout the United States. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists working in a variety of media such as photography, acrylic, pencil, fibers, oil, paper, and more. More than $1,000 in cash awards will be announced at a brief awards ceremony on February 2 at 6 pm. Jeffrey Morton served as juror for the exhibition. Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Morton is a resident of Signal Mountain, TN. During a two-year residence in Japan, earlier in his career, Morton was drawn to Japanese art and culture, which influences his work to

John Humphries: Constellations of Drawings in the Lower Gallery John Humphries is a visual artist, gardener, and designer focusing on communicating, through abstraction, stories and phenomena from nature and mythology. This creative work takes the form of watercolor drawings and ceramic objects. He took an unusual path to get where he is today. Originally from Texas, pausing briefly on the Ozark Plateau and along the Puget Sound, he now finds the Miami Valley is the perfect location for locking in roots. During life travels, he has completed degrees in Architecture and Fine Arts in Design, following a brief foray as a saucier. He teaches Architecture and Interior Design as a Professor at Miami University, OH. “The watercolor drawings for this exhibition are emotional and technical but with a colorist’s sensibility,” said Humphries. “They link the visual language of landscape, color theory, and constructed elements.” Humphries makes his watercolor drawings by researching a natural phenomenon, creating various codes to represent these elusive conditions and then organizing the codes into a series or constellation. Constellations of Drawings includes collaged photographic elements and other constructed pieces of wood floating above the plane of paper. Brandon Lutterman: Sculptural Vessels and Pots in the Display Case Brandon T. Lutterman lives in Middlesboro, KY, and is Assistant Professor & Program Director of Fine Art at Lincoln Memorial University. For more than 10 years, he has

taught full range of undergraduate courses in the studio arts, as w e l l a s c e ra m i c studio set-up, management, and maintenance. He received a Master of Fine Arts, Ceramics from Kansas State University and from Minnesota State

University-Mankato. “My current body of work is created to celebrate life and to help people recognize that we need to be stewards of all forms of life, not just our own,” said Lutterman. “There is a precious balance at stake between the needs and desires of the industrial man and the needs of our diverse population of organisms, fish, plants, animals, and ecosystems. My goal through my work is to prompt more awareness, appreciation, and preservation of our environment and species.” Lutterman’s work is versatile, including naturalism, utilitarian, and sculptural forms. He uses multiple techniques and styles of art to convey a concept. His glazes are developed through ongoing glaze research, as he aims to develop unique surfaces at low, mid, and high fire temperature ranges. Yvonne Hosey: The Hungry Month in the Atrium The Hungry Month pieces evoke the hardships and beauty of winter. Done in watercolor, scratchboard, acrylic, and glasspaint, the colors are muted, and the images are of the inedible – the scarce, precious, and beautiful – in the month of February. Hosey was born during a February blizzard in Manhattan but has spent most of her life in the South, where she experienced her first snow in Atlanta at the age of nine. Practicing as a nurse here in the state of Tennessee has brought her in contact with many people who know the true meaning of the Hungry Month. HE MOST POPULAR time to visit New Orleans is the extended weekend before Mardi Gras (February 9-13). Come then and you’ll be sure to catch the most popular parades, like Endymion, Bacchus, Zulu, Rex, and all of the festive celebrations throughout the whole city. Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” is the last day of the carnival season, as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Most visitors will plan to arrive no later than Saturday, February 10, in order to enjoy an extended weekend of festivities. Family Gras 2018 will be Friday, February 2, through Saturday, February 3.

MARDI GRAS TRADITIONS Mardi Gras is about music, parades, picnics, floats, and excitement. It’s one big holiday in New Orleans! Revelers know to wear costumes or at least dress in purple, green, and gold and adorn themselves with long beads caught from the floats of previous parades. You’ll see a lot of crazy costumes, kids with their families are everywhere, and both locals and visitors having a great time. Parade goers will sit on the ground, throw balls, play music, eat great food, and watch the crowds walk by between parades. On Mardi Gras day, the majority of non-essential businesses are shut down because of the celebration. Experienced revelers know to bring a large bag with them so they can haul away all the beads and trinkets they will catch from the parades!

Whether they cover the wearer’s eyes or whole face, masks add an element of mystery and intrigue when worn, especially around this particular holiday in the city. It’s safe to say that masks are one of our favorite Mardi Gras traditions. When did the mask tradition start though and why? Masks have been worn by different societies for centuries. Some groups wear them for rituals, some for celebrations, and still others for the performing arts. Mardi Gras masks in particular originated in ritual celebrations. New Orleans has been celebrating Mardi Gras for hundreds of years and is the largest masked party in North America. In the beginning, masks worn during Mardi Gras allowed wearers to escape society and class constraints. When wearing a mask, carnival goers were free to be whomever they wanted to be and mingle with whatever class they desired to mingle with. However, they were also considered to be a diversion for poor people, and women who wore masks had their reputation questioned. Today everyone wears masks during Mardi Gras. In fact, float riders are required to wear masks by law. On Fat Tuesday, everyone is free to wear masks, adding to the excitement and magic of celebrations throughout the city. While many masks are simple, there are those who put a lot of pride behind creating elaborate and beautiful ones. One such place is Maskarade, located in the French Quarter. Maskarade carries an extensive collection of masks from local and national artists. They even have some handmade Italian masks created in the old traditional Venetian style. If you’re looking for a mask that’s unique or special, then that’s the place to go.

The Best Places to Stay During Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is upon us, and hotels are already beginning to fill up. If you haven’t started planning your trip already, now is the time. With so many hotels throughout the city, it’s hard to know which ones are the best for Mardi Gras. Location is important. Take it from us – you do not want to have to drive and park during Mardi Gras celebrations. Being able to walk to where you want

to be is a lifesaver, especially when you need to use the bathroom. If you want to stay on or near a parade route, then we have a couple of suggestions: For a hotel that is close to the Uptown parades and has that classic New Orleans feel, then any of the hotels that are a part of the Garden District Hotel Collection are great places to stay during Mardi Gras. This hotel group includes The Prytania Park, Prytania Oaks, and Queen Anne Hotels. Each one of these hotels is located in the historic Lower Garden District and only steps away from the parades and streetcar line on St. Charles Ave. Using the streetcar, it’s only a short ride to downtown and all of the Mardi Gras celebrations in the French Quarter. There are also some more modern hotels along the parade routes. Hotel Indigo is an upscale property in the Garden District, and it’s right on St. Charles Avenue. Request a window facing St. Charles Avenue and you can watch the parades while you sip on your coffee from your room with wooden floors and chic décor. St. Christopher Hotel at the foot of Magazine Street, steps away from the Warehouse District and the French Quarter, is ideal for those who want to spend a lot of time in the French Quarter but would like to have an easy walk back to a slightly less-hectic area to get some rest. There are also a lot of great options for those who want to stay in the French Quarter. The Maison Dupuy Hotel is about as good as it gets. It embodies everything New Orleans is about, with a stylish courtyard and that historic-home feel. It’s also right in the middle of the Mardi Gras action. Hotel St. Helene is a beautifully restored hotel and only two blocks away from Bourbon Street. It offers great views of the French Quarter, and the rooms are fully equipped with all the modern comforts of home (like LCD flat screen TVs and iPod docking stations). The Frenchman Hotel is just outside the French Quarter, in the hip Faubourg Marigny, and has both contemporary and “period” rooms. The private balconies and awesome pool are two of our favorite features. Also, the brand new Royal Frenchmen Hotel & Bar, also in the Marigny, is absolutely lovely and has a bar that is fabulous as well. of 1930, during the Great Depression, which started in mid 1929, the first bank panics occurred, starting first in Nashville and then spreading throughout the Southeast. Referred to as a “bank run,” hundreds and sometimes thousands of depositors who lost confidence in the security of their financial institutions would converge of their local bank, withdrawing all of their hard earned money. As a consequence, more than 1,300 banks failed in 1930, and it continued on through 1931 and 1932. As a child born in 1950, I often recall the conversations of adults reliving their experiences of both the Great Depression and that period of bank failures that followed, which saw American depositors lose an estimated $140 billion in deposits. Because these bank failures occurred prior to the creation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which today insures

It was no wonder that many Americans continued to mistrust financial institutions for decades after, electing to keep their money elsewhere, just not in a bank despite the protection offered by the FDIC. People often referred to their mattress as their bank. The experiences of the Great Depression, while far more dire than our most recent

Great Recession, have nonetheless upended the economic confidence many of us hold for the future. And while our lack of optimism may be driving our desire to keep our heads down and our powder dry, the renewed confidence in our economy experienced during the last year is undeniable. So just what should you do? Our history is filled with multiple examples of both economic hardship and periods of economic boom. I encourage you to closely examine today’s economic indicators, including the small business confidence index, which is at a new all-time high. Be careful not to allow previous economic challenges to limit your future for economic growth. Business Etiquette 101: Traits of True Professional Integrity

PROFESSIONAL must have

integrity. » A recent survey estimated that the average person lies four times a day. » Dishonesty is saying something that is not true. This might be exaggerating the truth a bit to help us to look a little better. This might be leaving out a few details to make sure our point is not misunderstood. This might be misleading someone and allowing them to come to a conclusion that we know is not 100% accurate. This could be taking credit for something that we did not do or in the way that the information was related. This might be allowing others to make false assumptions about a situation or someone. Sometimes this is when we take advantage of someone else’s naivety or lack of knowledge in order to get what we want or need.

I’m sure there are many more examples of dishonesty. With these examples laid out before you, do you agree now that the average person lies at least four times per day? Do you? Do you know how many times someone with integrity lies per day? Zero. What happens when you didn’t meet a deadline? How do you explain it? How should you explain it? What if you make a mistake? Ruin a report? Lose something important? How does someone with integrity handle that? Do you ever tell someone you’re going to do something, call someone, bring something, finish something, etc., then you forget or just don’t do it? What do you say? Do you go into hiding? What would someone with integrity do? It is important that you do what you say you’re going to do, when and how

you committed to doing it. If you fail to keep a commitment, admit it. Apologize. Recommit. Make it right. Never make excuses, give blame, or fail to acknowledge when you indeed have failed a commitment. What do you think would change in the workplace if everyone kept their commitments? Important New Tax Changes for 2018 T

HE NEW TAX laws that went into effect on January 1st of this year will impact nearly every American taxpayer. Important changes include: » Higher contribution limits for retirement savings: Employees who participate in certain retirement plans – 401(k)s, 403(b)s, most 457 plans, and the Thrift Savings plan – will be able to contribute as much as $18,500, a $500 increase from the current $18,000 limit. For those over the age of 50, the contribution limit is $24,500. » 529 college plans: After the congressional rewrite of the tax code, parents can now use 529 plans to cover tuition not only at colleges and universities, but also at private elementary and high schools. » Mortgage deductions: For current mortgage holders, there is no change. But the interest deductibility is reduced to interest on the first $750,000 of new mortgage debt incurred after December 31, 2017. The old limit was $1 million. Also, homeowners may not claim a deduction for existing and new interest on home equity debt beginning January 1, 2018. » Corporate taxes: Under the previous law, the top rate was 35%. Under the new law, the top rate has been reduced to 21%. » Pass-through business taxes: Under the previous law, businesses organized as sole proprietorships, LLCs, and partnerships didn’t pay corporate tax rates. Instead, the owners paid taxes at the individual income tax rates on their share of business income – referred to as pass-through business taxes. Those tax rates were the same as the individual income tax rates. Under the new law, business owners can take a 20% deduction on their pass-through business income, with limits for those earning above $157,500 (single) and $315,000 (married, filing jointly).
