E R E C E N T LY h a d to say goodbye to the patriarch of Brett’s family. His passing was not expected, which always makes the loss more difficult to swallow. We felt so “loved on” by our extended family members, church family, and close friends through the Photo by Mirtography initial shock. From meals and traveling expenses to prayers for comfort and safe travels, we have been thankful for the support system that seemed to appear just when we needed it. The outpouring of concern, whether by phone call, card, text, or email, has been truly touching. It was nice to relay to Brett’s New York family that there were people in Knoxville, Tennessee, lifting them up in prayer through this difficult time. It’s been such a good reminder that “little things really do mean a lot” and how much we need each other for caring support. We were thankful that our grown children were able to make the trek north for the family gathering and service. This sad occasion was buffered at times by

sweet remembrances and the miles and miles of winter wonderland we encountered along the way. Even the simple act of a neighbor grabbing mail and packages while we were traveling was so appreciated. At Everything Knoxville, our goal is to put people in contact with each other - to offer that needed service or to participate in serving someone else’s need. Whether it’s providing relief options for people who have been told that there aren’t any left, like Drs. A.J. and Monica do at West Knox Acupuncture, or finding trustworthy professional personal care and home services that our advertisers’ businesses offer. Direct connections are important. We encourage you to support each other, your hometown businesses, charity fundraisers, community events, and volunteer whenever you can lend a hand. Be kind, empathetic, and aware that people might be facing hardships that don’t necessarily show on the surface. Take care of each other - it’s why we’re all here!

Live Life Pain Free W

E AT Everything Knoxville had the unique opportunity to have an informative conversation with the owners of West Knox Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, Drs. A.J. and Monica Sarrat, located off North Cedar Bluff. In addition to helping their patients live pain free lives, they love educating the community on exactly what acupuncture is and what it can do for you. We’ve compiled the most common questions the Sarrats get asked regarding their business. What types of conditions can be treated with acupuncture? While acupuncture can be used for many health conditions, at West Knox Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, we focus on treating complex, chronic cases such as fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and failed surgeries, as well as women’s health issues like infertility, endometriosis, and PCOS.

After a torn meniscus, I had knee pain along with advanced arthritis. I had tried all the injections and physical therapies but was still not able to stand for long periods comfortably. My treatments not only eased the knee pain, but also my lower back and hip pain that I now realize were related. I can now get out and hike and tailgate and go to games, which I was not able to do before.

So how exactly does acupuncture work? One of the many ways it works is by stimulating the nervous system to produce specific hormones and neurotransmitters. You’ve heard of serotonin or dopamine - well, we can get the nerves to produce the desired effects like improved sleep from anxiety or insomnia, regulate hormones for women’s health conditions and erectile dysfunction, or even produce the body’s own natural painkillers for chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia. That sounds great, but will it work for me? Every BODY is different. We have high clinical success rates because we are very selective of the types of cases we take on. No two conditions are treated the same, even though patients may present with similar symptoms. The best way to find out if we can help is to schedule an in-depth consultation with our doctors so they can see if you are a good candidate for our treatments. If we can help you, we will let you know what it will take during your initial consultation so there are no surprises later. If we can’t help, we are often able to refer you to someone who can. How long until I start feeling better? Everyone responds differently, but if you’ve had something for a long time, we tell our patients not to expect a cure overnight. After 20 years of being in practice, the most important thing we have learned is that all long-term healing takes time and consistency. Do I need to get a referral from my medical doctor to make an appointment for acupuncture treatments? In Tennessee, acupuncturists are licensed by the Tennessee Department of Health and no referral is necessary. You can make an appointment directly by calling our office at 865-275-2444.

I had been to many, many doctors after years of pain and numbness in my feet without getting any relief. I really look forward to coming in for my treatments because after each one, my condition improves. I can now sleep at night without having to get up and walk around until the numbness subsides.

How do most medical doctors feel about acupuncture? Forty years ago, it was common for MDs to be skeptical. However, in 2022, every healthcare provider wants to work with an acupuncturist. Integrative or complementary medicine is the new buzzword, because it works for so many tough, seemingly incurable cases. They often refer many of their difficult cases to us because we solve problems that they don’t have good solutions for and vice versa. We complement each other’s treatments well, so it is a true Integrative Medical model. Does insurance cover this? Our clinic provides a complementary insurance benefits check to see what coverage you may have, but cost has never been an issue for our patients to start care. They are just happy we can help them where other providers might have said there is nothing that can be done.

I had chronic lower back pain for over a year. I had been to many doctors and had every test imaginable. They had run out of options for me outside of medication. After my treatments at West Knox Acupuncture, my pain has been relieved completely. I have gone from 60 pain pills per month to only four.

Do you treat long hauler Covid-related conditions like hair loss or loss of smell? We have had great success treating long hauler related symptoms such as hair loss, fatigue, brain fog, loss of smell or taste, and quite often within a few months patients regain their sense of smell and taste. What kind of training do you have in order to practice acupuncture? Our providers have doctorate degrees and are Board Certified both nationally and in several states. Drs. A.J. & Monica have a combined 40 years of experience practicing. I’ve had surgery, PT, injections, and chiropractic already. Can acupuncture still help me?

Dr. A.J. worked in a hospital for more than 15 years treating patients just like this where they were sent to him after they had tried everything else. He was often seen as the last resort with the best results. Acupuncture is also very complementary and works well in conjunction with the types of modalities you mentioned. What can a patient expect when they come into the clinic? After your meeting with the doctor, you will get a personalized treatment plan that gives you the best opportunity to get the results you want. The recommended plans are based on the most current evidence-based research and decades of experience successfully treating these conditions. If you have been living with pain or a chronic health problem and would like a second opinion, call West Knox Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine today at 865-275-2444 to set up your consultation with one of our experienced doctors!

like mothballs. I’ll never forget that smell as I walked into that shadowed brown-leather lobby. A s I walked past the dark mahogany receptionist’s desk littered with sticky notes, I felt a pit in my stomach. You know Matt DeGraff, Luke Powers, Charissa Leonard, w h at I ’m t a l k i n g Tim Johnson, Erin Phillips, and Travis Cullman. about… that “one of these things does not belong - and it might be me” type of feelings. As I listened to the older gentleman in the three-piece suit spout off terms like “probate” and “defensive strategies,” I sunk lower in my seat. “What the heck is he talking about?” I thought to myself. “Should I raise my hand or just play along?” No, this wasn’t my defense attorney prepping and lecturing me on my upcoming trial appearance. This was my local financial advisor! A newly minted 21-year-old, I was taking ownership of an investment account established for me as a child. When he was done talking, the well-intentioned advisor successfully filled out the paperwork (which I numbly scratched my “John Hancock” on), and I left that one-sided conversation feeling small and more confused than ever. “What am I investing in again? The trades cost how much? And what the heck was that risk tolerance packet about?!” I muttered as I plodded out to my car. “Oh well,” I mumbled as I fumbled my key into the car’s ignition. “I guess this is how financial stuff works.” And then it happened. As my car engine roared to life, so did this question - WHY? Why does it have to be this way?! Why should we accept being left in financial darkness? Why can’t we condense complex ideas into simple action items? Why aren’t we prioritizing listening over lecturing? Serving over selling? Whether you’re 21 or 81, can we all agree that investing in relationships has equal if not greater value than picking the investments in our portfolio? That is the reason why I started Cullman Wealth Team. In a complex, confusing world, you deserve a trusted guide who delivers clear financial advice and works beside you to cut through the noise. We look forward to building a relationship with you while we help you manage your investments - no mothballs necessary.

3 SHOWS! BIJOU THEATRE Saturday, Feb. 12 2:00PM &7:30PM SUNDAY, Feb. 13

GO! Contemporary Dance Works takes Knoxville on a Riveting 200-Year Journey through Appalachian History GO! Contemporary Dance Works will present a full length contemporary ballet, In the Shadows of Pine Mountain: the Scots-Irish exodus from Ulster to the hills of Appalachia at the Bijou Theatre, February 12 and 13th, 2022. This ballet celebrates the strength and beauty of the Scots-Irish culture without forgetting their struggles with the enormous unrest of tyranny, persecution and famine. They fought not only against the king’s tyranny, but against losing their physical connection with their heritage, which attributed to their exodus to the Appalachian Mountains in the 1700’s. Known for its innovative style, GO!’s original and diverse choreography crosses genres of dance to take its audience on this historical and enchanting journey. Act one is visually stunning with lively, fun Irish and Scottish dancing, developing into emotionally charged scenes about rebellion and survival. Act two includes all the favorites of Appalachian history, moving from light hearted topics such as the moonshiners and revenuers, washboard bands and porch parties, to the darkness and depth of the coal mines.

PHOTOS: PATTI GOOGE

This landmark achievement includes a cast of 50 dancers and seven choreographers with authentic and elaborate costuming and set design. A celebration of Scots-Irish and Appalachian music, this ballet includes favorites such as Masons Apron, Miss McCleods Reel, Wayfaring Stranger, In the Pines, Down to the River to Pray, and You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive. The Knox County Jug Stompers will play live music pre-show and at intermission. Advanced ticket prices range from $25 - $35 and may be purchased at gocontemporarydance.com or by calling 865-539-2475.

O

WNER AND operator, Jesse Hawe of Dents & Detail, takes his “commitment to quality” very seriously. Having worked in the vehicle repair service industry for more than 18 years, he opened his own shop Maryville three years ago. Jesse’s business on South Washington Street in Maryville has thrived, so he has recently opened his second location here in Knoxville. After a major building renovation, Dents & Detail’s Knoxville location is now open for business at 8525 Walbrook Drive, conveniently located just before the Walker Springs Road intersection past the Sam’s Club/Walmart parking lot. As a body shop alternative, they offer paintless dent repair. This method is actually the repair most insurance providers prefer, as it is less expensive than standard body shop part replacement and with less downtime. Dents & Detail is able to afford their customers substantial savings on time and service, as there are no backordered parts or paint matching (or mismatching!) issues. They are able to

restore most vehicles back to pre-collision condition, and their work comes with a lifetime warranty. As a veteran and a father of four, Jesse’s mindset is one of providing a community service to save people both time and

money. Many of their satisfied customers include local rental car companies that need their vehicles repaired quickly and reliably. Dents & Detail also provides other automotive services like window tinting, interior and exterior vehicle detailing, and for the serious car enthusiast, ceramic coating to enhance and restore a lustrous paint job. Visit Jesse’s website at DentsDetail.com to see their many testimonials, request a quote, or book an appointment. A Google search will turn up more than 100 5-star reviews! After any collision or vehicle body damage, Dents & Detail encourages you to seek their opinion first before assuming a costly replacement is your only option. There is rarely a backlog, so you can be in and out in record time with a “like new again” repair.

E ALL KNOW the frustrations that can occur during the winter, but winter storms can also present a hidden threat. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless, and toxic gas. CO is found in fumes produced while burning fuel in vehicles, stoves, fireplaces, grills, generators, and other gas-powered appliances. Due to its undetectable properties, it is often referred to as the “silent killer.” Whether you are turning on your heating system or waiting for your car to heat up, be sure to know the signs of CO poisoning and what actions to take to keep your family safe. Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Due to carbon monoxide’s undetectable properties, many individuals do not know they are being exposed to the toxic gas. According to the CDC, the most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, and chest pain. The onset of symptoms is often comparable to that of the flu but without the fever. Is CO Poisoning Preventable? While everyone is at risk for CO poisoning, it is preventable through education and the installation of the correct monitoring equipment. Carbon monoxide detectors are the fastest way to prevent CO poisoning. The CO detector will sound an alarm if it detects a build-up of CO within your home and will not silence until the environment is carbon monoxide-free. The National Safety Council recommends you install a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. It is best to place this device near each bedroom or sleeping space, within the kitchen, and the portion of your home connected to a garage. If you believe carbon monoxide may be affecting your family, evacuate immediately. Then, either call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222, or go to your nearest emergency department. Traditional carbon monoxide detectors may activate when needed, but if no one is around, they will not help prevent disasters. The best way to ensure your family’s safety is to be proactive with the security of your home. The professionals at Fleenor Security are here to provide a helping hand in the customization of your home security. Contact us today to learn more and request a free system quote! M

Y HUSBAND, John, and I have lived in this h o u s e f o r ove r 3 0 years. The now dated kitchen lacked function, and we were ready to renovate the space enlarging the pantry and adding an eat-in area by expanding into an adjoining, under-used room. From the first day when we sat down with Todd Thomas, owner of Cabry Design, and Baylee Jones, Cabry’s kitchen designer, we ascertained that they were very good listeners. We left the meeting feeling that our wants and needs would be met and knowing that they had access to excellent products. Further, they used software that could show us in detail how our proposed kitchen redesign would look. This feature was very helpful in allowing us to make adjustments at several stages during the renovation process. Our travels over the years have taken us to the French countryside and many cities where we enjoyed eating at cafés and bistros. Our kitchen design was inspired by the common theme in these places to use black and white tiles for the floors. Once we determined the flooring, a kitchen color scheme soon emerged with Baylee’s help. We chose dark charcoal gray cabinetry, made by Plato Woodworks, Inc., that are handcrafted in Plato, Minnesota. We loved that the cabinets were available with glass fronts that enabled us to display our antique kitchen items. Our center island is a deep burgundy red, which pairs very nicely with the dark charcoal cabinets, and the red knobs on the Wolf cooktop match the red of the center island. Baylee was also very helpful in designing the kitchen lighting plan, suggesting interior cabinet and countertop lighting. Baylee led us to Olde Brick Lighting, located in Pennsylvania. The artisans at Olde Brick made the fixtures for the kitchen island and the eating area. We love the clean lines and handblown glass that they used for the fixtures. Cabry managed and coordinated our entire project. The project manager, Joe Pendley, was an extremely competent manager who kept us posted every step of the way and sought our advice and input at various decision points. From the highly skilled subcontractors to their cabinet installers, Chase and Aaron, Cabry Design proved to be top-notch and true artisans. Cabry Design was also able to incorporate our beloved

antique family furniture pieces into the design of our kitchen. A circular top from local Smokey Mountain Tops was added to our family heirloom cast iron ice cream table base to become our new kitchen table. A dry sink was crafted from wood my father had salvaged from Iowa’s Wartburg College. Baylee and I even found a Ukrainian woman on Etsy that created stools to perfectly match our theme. These one-ofa-kind touches make this kitchen uniquely ours! We absolutely love our renovated kitchen! Cabry introduced us to cabinet features that we did not know existed. Our kitchen now has a “magic corner” for easier storage than our Lazy Susan afforded and a convenient cabinet lift for the food processor. I love to cook and especially love to cook in this kitchen! We could not have achieved this makeover without the help of the very capable people at Cabry Design.

Don’t Guess About Your Financial Future, Plan For It

BY Y VO N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

’ M I N T H E b usin e ss of transformation transforming clients’ financial lives from uncertainty to confidence, from nagging worry to assured, peace-ofmind. And the benefits ripple through their retirement years Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA - creating a larger lifestyle because they have a solid plan in place which brings the mental relief to let go of worry and enjoy retirement. We create that transformation by looking at retirement risks head-on and creating a plan for each. Let’s look at the financial threat of an unexpected health event for example. In East Tennessee, the average cost of home healthcare and assisted living is over $40,000/year, and a full-skilled care facility is over $70,000/year. If you need to withdraw taxable money from your IRA to pay for these costs, add about a 22% tax cost to those numbers and you’re looking at $50,000 to $90,000/year. There’s a way to create a tax-free pool of long-term care dollars, and it’s as easy as shifting money from your left pocket to your right pocket. How? Reallocate a portion of your savings to an asset-based long-term care policy. Based on your age and general health, the insurance company provides you a guaranteed 2 to 4 times multiple of your investment as a tax-free LTC pool, which you can use to pay the full gamut of care costs - from home health aides to assisted living and full-skilled facilities. Customize your policy with inflation growth guarantees and the length of time you’d like your LTC pool to last. And there is no “use it or lose it” - if you never need LTC, your policy has a tax-free death benefit for your heirs, or you can even cancel the policy and request your money back. The LTC benefits and premiums are guaranteed at issue, and you can either pay a one-time policy premium or spread the premium out over 5 to 10 years. Policies can be issued through age 80, so it’s not too late! Tax-free assetbased LTC policies are a clever way to hedge your bets against the uncertainty of health costs and avoid the taxation “surcharge” that IRA withdrawals would trigger. And hey, would you rather leave your IRA as a family legacy or use it up paying for healthcare? I bet I know the answer to that one… Call, email, or contact me on our website if you’d like to learn more. Transformation awaits! Fabulous Closet Trends in 2022 A

S PRIMARY bedroom suites have gotten larger, so have the closets. Today’s primary closets are about spacious organization and no more fighting over clothing space. “Closets have evolved from simply being a basic, and often problematic, storage area to becoming customized spaces to meet a homeowner’s individual needs and style,” explained Kathryn Norton, co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Most importantly, no matter the size, it’s about maximizing storage space to keep clothes ordered, crumple-free, and everything easy to see.” What are today’s trends? The design professionals at Tailored Living of Knoxville have noticed: Bigger is Better While new home construction includes a larger primary bedroom, during the pandemic, many homeowners have chosen to renovate their bedroom suite to create a much larger closet area. Often, two closets are included in the master suite to accommodate separate his and her clothing spaces. Neutral Tones In a closet, neutrals are by far the most popular color tone. Closet systems’ most popular colors are neutrals like white, woodgrain grays, or other soft, light finishes. The

ideal closet allows the homeowner to make a statement with organization, not color. Add Flair with Hardware Add a statement to your closet with personalized hardware. Knobs, handles, and clothing rods are available in an array of styles and finishes such as gold, nickel, brushed nickel, oiled brass, and more. When you add hardware with an extra pop, you give a closet a lot of personal personality. Everyone Loves an Island If there is enough space, islands are definitely the most requested closet feature. People love having this boutique-inspired element for extra storage and the horizontal surface to place everyday items like your purse, or use it for folding clothing and packing. A walk-in closet needs to measure a minimum of 10' x 10' to accommodate an island or peninsula.

Decorative Drawer and Door Fronts The most popular drawer front is currently a Shaker-style. However, using a flat front, which is often less expensive, gives the closet a more modern look. Another popular option is to substitute glass door fronts in the place of solid wood. Each style can give the closet a completely different feel. Jewelry Drawers No more mismatched earrings and hard-to-find jewelry. Velvet-lined jewelry drawers offer scratch-resistant storage for jewelry and other items. An optional lock feature provides extra security. Whatever your style or budget, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet that fits your needs. As whole-home organization specialists, Tailored Living also has innovative storage solutions for the pantry, laundry, home offices, garage, and more. Make 2022 the year of organization.

Nick & J’s Cafe: Your Hometown Diner

W

ITH INTENSE ambition and a lot of hard work, Najwan Natour has truly lived the American dream. His family emigrated to the U.S. from Palestine after the 1967 war when Najwan was only five year old. “My parents realized it was not a good situation and we had to leave,” Najwan remembers. His father came here first and eventually was able to have his wife and children join him. Like most newly arrived immigrants, his father, Naji, took whatever jobs he could get in order to support his family. Naji initially worked as a server at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. with his siblings. He learned English along the way, and after moving south to Knoxville, he opened and operated The Copper Kettle restaurant with his brothers, Samir and Sami. It was this endeavor that gave Najwan his first “taste” of the restaurant business and decided his destiny. After he graduated from West High School, Najwan moved to Florida to co-own and operate a deli with his father and uncle. It was this experience that led him to acknowledge his need for more education, and he returned to Knoxville to earn an associate degree in business administration from Knoxville Business College. Throughout the following years, Najiwan had owned and co-owned four eating establishments, including the popular Froggy’s and Time Out Deli with his cousin, Maurice, before striking out on his own 12 years ago with Nick & J’s Cafe off Lovell Road. He named his fifth restaurant for his beloved sons, Nick and Jordan. Najwan made the conscious decision to put his family first. “I wanted to have more time to spend with my family, my sons, as they were growing up.” And he was able to do just that by attending their school and sports activities until both sons graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School. His older son, Nick, went on to earn a University of Tennessee degree in neuroscience and is currently back at UT for a second bachelor’s degree and to complete a master’s degree. Jordan, now a junior at UT majoring in sports management, had an internship with ESPN and has already been offered a job at the Arkansas State Football Program. Najiwan is very proud that they are both honor students and made sure to never push his sons to follow him in the restaurant business, saying, “I wanted them to find their own ways in life.” Najwan’s wife, Linda, now works with him at the restaurant after leaving a long career in banking. And just as Najwan helped his

father at The Copper Kettle, Sedo (Arabic for grandfather) Naji, along with his mother, Abla, come in every morning to lend a hand getting the restaurant ready for the day truly a Natour family affair! At Nick & J’s Cafe, everything is made fresh daily - from locally sourced ground beef, chicken, and eggs to fresh locally marketed produce. Their delicious ice cream comes from It’s All So Yummy Cafe, and scrumptious baked goods are made from scratch by Tee Dedrick of Special Tee Cookies. To date, Nick & J’s Cafe has been featured on the Food Network, CNN, Fox News/Fox & Friends, and the USA Today newspaper. TripAdvisor has bestowed their Travelers’ Choice Award for 2021 on Nick & J’s Cafe and also has them ranked as the “3rd Best Restaurant to Visit” in all of Knox, Loudon, Sevier, and Blount counties. And there are honestly just too many 5-star reviews on Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Google to count! Nick & J’s Cafe just celebrated its 12-year anniversary serving all your breakfast favorites - from traditional omelets and pancakes to legendary breakfast bowls. At lunch, they serve the best burgers (nationally recognized!), sandwiches, salads, and daily specials, including vegetarian options. Stop in for a

taste of their gyros, pastrami brisket, or reubens - you won’t be disappointed! Najwan is thankful for everything he has achieved, saying, “I give all the glory to God, my parents, my wife, Linda, and our employees. It would not have been possible without them.” With his decades of experience, Najwan now helps others wanting to begin or improve their own restaurants - offering his expertise on everything from start-up locations, to expanding menu items, to food service management. Be sure to contact him for a truly knowledgeable consultation of the restaurant business. Visit your local hometown diner from 7 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday and 8 am to 2 pm on Saturdays. Weekday breakfast is served from 7 to 10:30 am and from 8 to 11:30 am on Saturdays. Nick & J’s is respectfully closed on Sundays. You’ll find their menu, location, and additional information at www.nickandjscafe.com or call 865-7665453. Stop by soon - you’re sure to love it!!

Not All Valentines Are Chocolate BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM

S

U R PR I S E S CO M E in all shapes and sizes, but there are two distinct types… good and bad. While good surprises can leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for years, bad surprises can wreak all kinds of havoc and inconvenience to your life. What’s the best surprise you ever received? I can think of a few that still evoke warm memories and a smile. Several years ago, my husband called to tell me to shower and change quickly. “Wear something nice but comfortable,” he said “Don’t worry about the kids; a sitter is on her way.” A limo driver whisked me away to a spa where I was pampered with a facial and a most needed body massage! Later that evening, the same driver shuttled me and several other ladies to a secret dinner where our husbands sang love songs quartet style and prepared a five-course meal for us to enjoy. I was the envy of all my friends that year, and I of course soaked

up the attention! February is the time each year when we should take some time to create those lasting memories and do something extra for those we love. Dinner and a movie? Absolutely. But, don’t stop there. As a woman, I know we all love to feel special. We need those occasional “over the top” surprises that spice up our marriage and make us feel cherished. E a c h Fe b r u a r y we get numerous re q u e s t s fo r s u rprise cleanings. We’ve cleaned while the misses was at work and while the mister has been sent out for some “man time.” Everyone loves a clean house, especially when you aren’t the one doing the cleaning. If you are struggling with what to do for the love of your life, let us help. We are experts at making everything sparkle and shine and helping you create the ambience in your home that fosters those coveted warm, happy feelings. Also, in the spirit of surprises, we have

one of our own. Anyone that books a cleaning during February will get something special from our crew. Perhaps it’s an extra room cleaning or a deep-cleaned front porch. Each home is unique, but we look forward to surprising YOU and helping CO-OWNER you surprise the one John you love. Tip: If your part- Fitzwilliam ner is the type that needs a little help zeroing in on exactly what you want, you can shamelessly snip this article and put it on the fridge. I have even been known to leave articles open on the coffee table with portions highlighted, and it even worked… once. GARAGE FLOORING:

Make Sure It’s Durable

G

ARAGE REMODELING is currently the fastestgrowing segment of the home-improvement industry. It’s a separate room - and often the largest room in the house - that is not only a place to park a car, but can be used as a workshop, storage for items that won’t go in the house, or an area to enjoy hobbies. To give a garage a finished look and make it a more userfriendly space that’s easy to clean, renovations usually include a floor coating. While there are a few flooring options, the decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and professionally installed by PremierGarage, doing business in Knoxville for more than 15 years.

Do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with. The downside is many things can go wrong while applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tire bonds to the surface and peels it away from the concrete. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other primary benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy are: • Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling or blistering from hot tires and abrasions • Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant • Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years • Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements, front porches, and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home begins in the garage!

ERHAPS ONE OF the most gr aceful of all evergreens we can grow, deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara), can be a unique addition to your garden. This is one of the four known true cedars and can be a striking specimen. In the Southeast, we are not able to provide it with ideal growing conditions. However, it’s important with this species to think through the conditions we can provide. With a little bit of forethought and perhaps a little luck, you can be successful. Deodar cedar’s native range is the cool moist slopes of the Western Himalayas, Afghanistan, and northern Pakistan. This region is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots and includes more than 140 different species of conifer, including C. deodara. It also includes the highest topographical regions of the world. In its native range, the tree finds extensive use among locals for thatching and shelter constructions. It is also used in various forms for medicinal purposes. In modern medicine, the anti-inflammatory activity of the essential oils derived from its wood is being studied. Large and impressive examples of deodar cedar can be seen in the Pacific Northwest, some reaching more than 100 feet in height. However, the stressful heat and humidity of

30

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

February 2022

the Southeast tends to keep trees slightly more petite. In our region, you can expect to see grand old trees 60 feet high and wide. This is a pyramidal conifer with a strong central leader. Trees remain pyramidal until very old, when they can become more rounded or flat-topped. Branches spread horizontally with needles weeping towards the tips. Many cultivars are available. You can find selections with green, gold, blue, or even whitish-colored needles. There are columnar cultivars, as well as those known to be dwarf compared to the straight species. Homeowners will want to thoroughly investigate their different options and choose a selection that fits their needs. One great application for this plant is as a background or garden screen. The best living screens contain a diversity of plant materials. Deodar’s unique texture blends well with other conifers. The tree doesn’t grow as quickly as traditional screening plants like arborvitae, yet it can be sturdier over time. One key to success in growing deodar in the Southeast is good drainage. This plant does not like wet feet. Planting trees slightly above grade and making sure the root-flair (broadening of the trunk just above the soil line) is exposed when planting is crucial. Additionally, not letting trees suffer from

Photos courtesy of FastGrowingTrees.com

drought stress in the hottest part of the summer is important. After two or three years of establishment, trees become less finicky and less susceptible to drought stress. Deodar cedar has narrow climactic adaptability. You will see references list USDA hardiness zones of (6b)7-9 for this plant. However, there is a big difference between surviving and thriving, and this plant will struggle in the hottest parts of the Southeast. Even within its hardiness zones, young trees are prone to injury from frosts and cold wind. Don’t let that warning dissuade you from growing deodar cedar, particularly gardeners who have the room to grow trees to their full-size potential. You can find various selections of C. deodara in all locations of the UT Gardens. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit utia.tennessee.edu/ state-botanical-garden.

February in the Garden T

BY L I S A G R U G I N

. S . E L L I O T may

say that April is the cruelest month, but my vote for that distinction goes to February. It is cold and dreary, my bank account and waistline are still trying to recover from the holidays, and trying to get ready for spring this year makes me want to swear and drink alcohol. I digress. February is actually a good time for gardeners because it’s when the dreaming and planning can begin. You are stuck inside where you can watch all those gardening shows or go through Pinterest and plan the beautiful garden of your dreams. I will remind you, however, that some of those lovely plants you see will not do well here. Also many of the gardening programs show lawns so desperately overplanted that I want to call the producer and scream ugly things at them. Like overpriced landscaping companies, they will install 60 plants when 20 is a far more reasonable number. They want things to look TV ready and don’t give a flying flip that you will be pulling up or cutting down half the plants in 3-5 years because of overcrowding. Swearing, drinking, screaming… can you tell I don’t like winter? There will be some pretty days this month, and that is when you need to go outside and do a good walk around. Do you have plants that need to be pruned, divided, or moved? Do you have some that need to be composted? Do you have bare spots that need to be filled? Do you have too many deciduous shrubs and not enough evergreens, or do you have a sea of green with no color interest? This is also a good time to visualize changes that you would like to make. Do you want to add any structures or hardscapes? Would you like a new patio, fountain, fire pit, or seating area? Think about what you want to see, then talk to us about how you can make it happen. While you are out there, check for problems or potential problems. Remember to look up, down, and all around. Look up at tree branches to see if you have sparse canopies, broken or damaged branches, loose bark, woodpecker holes, or mushrooms. Look down for weeds, mole tunnels, vole holes, or shallow holes where possums, skunks, or raccoons are digging for grubs. Look all around for signs of disease or overwintering insects. Make notes and call us if you have any questions. Here are some other things that you can do this month: • Are you going to do a veggie garden this year? This is a good time to get it ready by tilling processed manure and compost

into the soil. If you have raised beds or container gardens, work in compost with a shovel or trowel so the nutrients can begin spreading into the soil. • By the end of the month, it will (hopefully) be warm enough for you to sow greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onions. If you have a cold frame, you can start cold weather veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. • Perennial herbs can be planted indoors, but wait a little longer on annuals and warm season vegetables. There is always a race to see who can get tomatoes earliest, but remember that if you plant in cold soil, you will get much less fruit. Patience is a virtue! • A 3 inch layer of mulch on gardens and flower beds helps keep the temperature and moisture levels of the soil more stable. Remember to make donuts and not volcanoes around trees. Piling mulch around the trunk damages it. • Yes, you can prune. Educate yourself about what you should and shouldn’t prune and how to prune properly. Please do not commit Crepe murder, and do not prune your spring bloomers or you will have no blooms. • This is a great time to cut out the privet, honeysuckle, and wild grapes that hide

amongst your shrubs. You can also get some really good exercise pulling weeds. Herbicides will not work when it is cold, so please check the directions for minimum spraying temperatures. • Do not forget the birds. They are having a hard time in the cold and will really appreciate a full, clean feeder. High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet will help them stay warm. A heated birdbath will create a spa! We are still experiencing some challenges with supply chain issues and grower lag. Some trees and shrubs will take 3-5 years to reach sellable size, so you may see smaller sizes. Some plants will simply be unavailable for now. We are also having trouble sourcing some bagged goods, chemicals, birding supplies, and gift items. Please be patient. We are doing the best we can. I know you will soon have lots of questions about your plants, so don’t hesitate to give us a call or stop by. We want to help you have a beautiful yard!

How to Make the Most of Your Closet Cleanout BY C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y, C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y.C O M

M

ID-WINTER IS A great time to work on home organization, and the perfect place to start is your primary closet! Whether you tackle the task yourself or call for professional help, the Closets by McKenry Design Team has suggestions that will prepare you to the fullest. Read on for three top tips that will make your closet a place you’ll linger in long after you’ve gotten dressed. Step One: Collect Ideas Closets by McKenry designer Robin Carbough suggests creating a vision board of your ideal space using Pinterest, Instagram, or photos cut out of magazines. “Write down how you want the space to make you feel and how you prefer storing your items; for instance, behind closed doors or more open style storage,” said Robin. “Think about what would bring you the most peace, as well as save you time in your daily routines.” Step Two: Redecorate the Space Many homeowners don’t consider enhancing the atmosphere of their closets, but Closets by McKenry Designer Cesar Rivera encourages it. “A wide range of decorative hardware styles, finishes, and moldings allow you to accent your space with the most modern or classic design touches,” he said. And, don’t forget the lighting: “Think beyond ceiling lights. Built-in closet lighting comes in a variety of styles and can give homeowners insight into every piece in their collection and every corner of their closet, day or night.”

Step Three: Clean it Out Chris McKenry, Chief Organizing Officer at Closets by McKenry, suggests going through all the items in your closet. “Decluttering and purging will allow you to clearly see what space you have to work with so you can get an idea of what needs to go back into your newly-redesigned closet and where.” Robin adds, “When sorting, ask yourself these questions: Do I love it, use it, or have a better one? Clean out the space even if in bitesize time blocks, and celebrate those gains.” Dream Today, Enjoy Tomorrow Making time to organize your primary closet will bring a refreshing change to your home and create space for new treasures and experiences. And the more you prepare, the more rewarding your results will be. For more ideas and inspiration, visit the 2022 Dogwood Arts House & Garden show and meet Chris, Cesar, and Robin at the Closets by McKenry and Designer Garages booth. There, they’ll be showcasing the

latest products and finishes for home storage, as well as epoxy garage floor products and beautiful cabinets for the garage. Make sure to register for a Closets by McKenry giveaway of a Pantry Starter Counter featuring four drawers and three oil rub bronze baskets - a $1,500 value!*

Evins Mill: A Hidden Gem A RT I C L E A N D P H OTO S BY K R I S T I PA R S O N S

E

VINS MILL is a tucked away oasis that sits beneath a forest of majestic Eastern Hemlocks in Smithville, TN. The privately owned resort is a place of tranquility, fine dining, history, and an abundance of natural features. Once a retreat for political figures from Nashville and a gathering place for the family and friends of the former property owners, Evins Mill is now a vacation destination that welcomes a variety of guests. The heart of this Tennessee gem is one of the state’s most stunning examples of nature’s artistry, Carmac Falls. The base of the 90-foot waterfall is surrounded by giant boulders that are covered in moss, ferns, small cascades, and wildflowers during spring and summer. The state’s 10th highest waterfall is often the feature that pulls guests to the woodland resort. However, it is the spirit of place, passion of the Cochran family, and the hospitality of the Evins Mill staff that captures the hearts of guests and inspires them to return time after time. Upon your arrival to the luxurious but rustic resort, you’ll first notice the peaceful setting, a sparkling pond, the historical mill, and a granary that looks as if it was pulled from the pages of Southern Living Magazine. The land straddles Tennessee’s Highland Rim and the Upper Cumberland Plateau and is a certified Tennessee State

Natural Area. Blend it all together and you get a place where the charm of yesteryear, the beauty of nature, and modern day amenities meet to create the perfect balance for a memorable getaway. I must warn you that you will be tempted to disappear into the hammock bower even before you have even checked in at Evins Mill. As you’re driving into the parking area, you’ll see the numerous hammocks hanging along the hillside. The water dropping from the dam of the nearby mill creates a white

noise that whispers to you with a promise of a relaxing nap after a long drive or a stressful week. The gentle breeze that is present even on the hot and humid Tennessee days is simply icing on the cake of an already perfect setting. Mix in a book from the library or your sweetheart beside you and you may decide that you’re fine with the hammocks and don’t even need the creekside lodging options. I mentioned the temptation to Evins Mill owner William Cochran during a visit once and he was quick to

share with me that though there is plenty to do in the area, most guests never leave property until their departure day. I can say from my numerous trips to the resort that it is certainly true and it speaks volumes to the way the land and the spirit of Evins Mill welcomes every guest to their home away from home. Once you are checked in, you’ll find that the opportunities for both moments of relaxing and adventures are limitless. Hiking, fishing, lawn games, an on-site library, wildlife watching, swimming beneath Carmac Falls, billiards, ping pong, darts, and other activities are sure to keep you entertained. There’s no need to research local restaurants because meals are included in your stay, and the fine dining that guests are treated to at Evins Mill is one of the highest rated culinary experiences in the area. The chef and staff have created a wonderful menu that is a blend of world cuisine with southern soul food. A full-service bar is available and includes beer, vodka, wine, and moonshine from local companies. The resort also partners with Tennessee-based food purveyors as often as possible when choosing ingredients for all of the dishes and dining options. Guests that decide to venture off of the property will find the following

opportunities: Boating on Center Hill Lake, taking in live music at the Burlap Room or The Caverns, tours of wineries and distilleries, visiting the Appalachian Center for Craft, a trip to Harmony Lane Farm & Creamery, a trip to multiple state parks,

browsing local shops, or exploring Nashville. Have I convinced you to visit yet? Evins Mill is located two hours west of Knoxville and is perfect for a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a full week of escaping everyday life. Have a special event coming up? The property is also a popular destination for corporate retreats and weddings or receptions. Are you looking for a picturesque proposal spot? The staff can help you set up a storybook scene with their engagement package. The possibilities are endless! And, I can personally promise you that regardless of how you choose to experience Evins Mill, you will truly enjoy your visit. Want to do a trial run and check everything out before staying overnight? Take advantage of the day trip package! To be a day guest, reservations are needed in advance, and a wonderful sack lunch is provided. The day-tripper package includes access to all activities on the property, including access to Carmac Falls. Day trip reservations can be made by calling Evins Mill at 615-269-3740 - and be sure to tell them Kristi sent you! Valentine’s Day:

Always a Good Reason to Splurge BY J E F F G OTC H E R

R

O M AN CE I S in the air, and whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day with either your favorite pet or your favorite person, it’s an opportunity to go big. If you were lucky enough to snag a reservation at a popular restaurant, hopefully your server can point your palate in the right direction. For those of us who may have procrastinated too long or have other things going on, here is your blueprint. When I want to go all out, I swing by Butler & Bailey to pick up some filets and then The Shrimp Dock to get some lobster tails. My lovely bride doesn’t love lobster, so I end up getting a bonus tail. Always start with bubbles right out the gate - pop open a bottle of Schramsberg. I’m a firm believer this bottle pairs well with everything, so it doesn’t matter if you have Frank Sinatra, Boyz II Men, or Enrique Iglesias dialed up on your playlist for the evening. I recommend adding a few raspberries or blackberries to your glass because they will help lead your palate into

the wine accompanying the main dish. My recommendations: • Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc Napa Valley, CA ($37.99) It’s a balancing act when it comes to pairing food with wine. Since our main course will include some fantastic proteins that, while lean, have a robust presence if they are correctly prepared, choose more “classic” steakhouse side dishes to accompany them. The filets are good right off the grill, but the lobster tails need butter - lots of butter! - to give the lobster enough “oomph” to match the wine’s structure. You’ll then need to cut that fat on your palate. The wines I recommend do that and have the tannins and acidity to complement the main course and side dishes. My recommendations: • Honig Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Napa Valley, CA ($49.99) • Luca Malbec Old Vine, 2015 Mendoza, Argentina ($35.99) • A Portela Mencia, 2015 -

Galicia, Spain ($24.99) Whenever Valentine’s Day comes around, stores start putting out their chocolate-covered strawberries, and, like clockwork, I walk over to the display and grab a dozen… or two. They’re mostly berry, so they must be healthy! It’s time to go back to bubbly. I recommend a sparkling rose, something a little on the sweeter side. I’m a huge cava fan because it’s tasty, and it’s a good bang for your buck. You can absolutely go with another type of bubbly if that’s your fancy. My recommendations: • Borrasca Rose Cava Cava, Spain ($9.99) • Gabernik 23 Rose Priquette Sparkling Stajerska, Slovenia ($17.99) Hopefully you’ll have a chance to indulge on this upcoming Valentine’s Day. It’s an excellent opportunity to drink some fantastic wine and eat good food. Cheers! Celebrate Valentine’s by Falling in Love with Your Hardwood Floors Again

Y

OUR HOME’S hardwood floors were once rich and luxurious looking. The first feature that greeted your guests when they entered, making a lasting impression on everyone that visited. But years of use, an occasional accident, and the sun’s relentless UV rays have left them dull, scratched, and unattractive. In fact, instead of adding to the overall appearance of your home, they now detract from it, causing you to strategically arrange area rugs over high traffic and damaged areas in an attempt to camouflage them. During this Valentine’s month, why not fall in love with your home’s hardwood floors all over again? It’s easy thanks to the skilled and experienced craftsmen at European Fine Hardwood Floors. If you’re considering refinishing your existing hardwood floors or installing new ones, discover the European Fine Hardwood Floors difference. Wonder Why Everything Korean is Trending?

Kimchi is One Major Reason C O U RT E S Y O F B P T

F

ROM BTS to Squid Game, Korean culture is seriously trending right now. And beyond K-Pop and K-Drama, much of the buzz comes from the unique flavors of Korean cuisine - with kimchi as the key. If you follow the latest cooking shows, recipes, and up-and-coming restaurants, you’ll notice kimchi is everywhere, and for good reason - its refreshingly crunchy texture and spicy, tangy “umami” flavor appeals to many palates, and it’s also known to have health benefits. Kimchi’s popularity is skyrocketing at a time when Korean culture is hot and plant-based dishes are all the rage. Just how much is kimchi trending? The Jongga brand of kimchi, which represents more than 60% of the kimchi exported from South Korea to the U.S., reports an increase in those exports of more than 20% in just the last three years. “We’ve been amazed at the growing popularity of this traditional Korean staple,” said Brian Tompkins, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Daesang America, maker of Jongga kimchi. “And we’re delighted to share it with foodies and food lovers everywhere.” Here’s a quick guide to kimchi, how you can use it - and how to try out this food phenomenon for yourself! What’s in Kimchi? Cabbage (baechu, or napa cabbage) is the core of kimchi, but you can add other vegetables to make it your own. Vegetables often used in kimchi include: • Radishes • Cucumber • Chives • Mustard greens • Perilla leaves (mint family) Beyond the veggies, it’s all about the seasonings, plus the fermentation process. Top seasonings used in kimchi include: • Chili peppers, flakes and/or powder • Onions • Garlic • Ginger Most cooks also add fish sauce and/or saeujeot (fermented shrimp), which you can skip if you’re going vegan. How is Kimchi Made? Kimchi’s unique flavor comes from the process of lacto-fermentation, which is how foods like sauerkraut and dill pickles are made. Fermented foods also are having a moment right now, due to growing interest in the health benefits from probiotics

(which occur as a result of fermentation) for good gut health. To make kimchi, cabbage is heavily layered in salt for a few hours. After the cabbage is rinsed, all the other ingredients are combined and packed into a container, then allowed to ferment for a few days or much longer - at room temperature. Kimchi also can be eaten fresh, skipping the fermentation step. Sound complicated and time consuming? While the kimchi-making process seems daunting, there’s a much easier way: Buy kimchi already made with traditional ingredients and in a variety of great flavor combinations. For example, Jongga offers a wide array of kimchi products, including: • Sliced Napa Cabbage Kimchi in spicy and mild flavors. The kimchi comes in small, easy-to-use pouches. This kimchi complements many dishes, especially meats like steak or BBQ. • Shelf Stable Vegan Kimchi is perfect to travel with, to enjoy as a side dish, or use as a topping or ingredient in other dishes. • Kimchi Ramen combines the great flavor of kimchi with tasty ramen noodles for a quick lunch or side and comes in a package, bowl, or cup for a convenient, portable meal. Check out these and other kimchi products at JonggaUSA.com.

Cook time: 15 minutes Makes 3 servings Ingredients: • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 tablespoon onions, chopped • 1 cup tomatoes, chopped • Oregano to taste • Salt to taste • 1/2 cup Jongga kimchi, chopped • 6 eggs • 1 tablespoon spring onion, chopped • 6 slices toasted bread Directions: Heat large skillet over medium-high heat with oil. Add onions and cook 5 minutes. Add tomato, kimchi, and season with salt and oregano. Stir well and bring to simmer, let cook 5 minutes until slightly thickened and reduced. Crack eggs over sauce. Baumann Brothers: Knoxville’s First Professional Architects

Albert B Baumann, Sr.

Joseph F Baumann

B

AUMANN BROTHERS, Knoxville’s first professional architects, was founded in 1887 by brothers Joseph Francis Baumann (1844-1920) and Albert Benjamin Baumann, Sr. (18611942). William Baumann, the father of Joseph and Albert, was born in Bavaria and immigrated to America in the 1830s. In 1837, he married Catherine Schneider. The family briefly lived in Savannah, Georgia, where William worked as a shipbuilder. By the 1840s, the family had moved to East Tennessee, where Baumann found ample work as a carpenter and house builder in various growing towns around the region. The Baumann family moved to Knoxville in 1855. During the Civil War, the Baumann house, located on what was then the outskirts of town, was occupied by both Union and Confederate soldiers and suffered considerable damage. After the war, William and his sons continued working as carpenters and helped to rebuild Knoxville. Joseph Francis Baumann, the second son of William and Catherine Baumann, was born in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, on January 16, 1844. He initially worked in the carpentry trade alongside his father and began listing his services as an architect in 1872. That year, he designed two important Knoxville landmarks, the Second Empire home of financier Charles McClung McGhee on Locust Street and Staub’s Theatre, the city’s first opera house, on Gay Street. In 1875, Baumann designed Odd Fellows Hall (now called the Kern’s Building on Market Square) for confectioner Peter Kern, as well as the Third Presbyterian Church, of which the Baumann family were members. Other major commissions during this period included the Hattie House Hotel on Gay Street (1879), the East Tennessee National Bank on Gay Street (1886), and large mansions for businessmen such as C. J. McClung and James D. Cowan. One of Baumann’s most well-known projects, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, was completed atop Summit Hill in 1886. Joseph’s younger brother, Albert Benjamin Baumann, was born in Knoxville on August 30, 1861. He joined Joseph’s firm as a draftsman in 1882, and upon his promotion to full partner in 1887, the firm began operating under the name “Baumann Brothers.” This firm’s early work included several large warehouses with ornamented storefronts on Jackson Avenue, campus buildings and elaborate houses such as Westwood (1890) on Kingston Pike, and a number of homes in the Fort Sanders, Fourth & Gill, and Old North Knoxville neighborhoods. The Baumann Brothers are responsible for the design of the iconic Knoxville High School (1910) on E. Fifth Avenue. In the 1880s, Joseph Baumann helped renovate and expand Knoxville’s first Market House, a one-story shed-like structure that occupied much of Market Square. The Baumanns subsequently designed an imposing two-story replacement for this building, which was completed in 1897. That same year, the Monroe County Courthouse in Madisonville was completed, one of several courthouses designed by the firm. Later courthouses included the

James D Cowan House

Staub Opera House

Blount County Courthouse (1906) in Maryville and the Washington County Courthouse (1912) in Jonesborough. Joseph Baumann left the firm in 1913 and retired from the profession altogether in 1916. He died on April 20, 1920. Albert Sr. continued as the firm’s sole principal for several years. His commissions included the expansions of Knoxville High School (1914 and 1920), the original design of which the firm provided in 1910. He also remodeled the Charles McClung McGhee House (which had been one of his brother’s first commissions in 1872) as a Masonic Temple in 1915. KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL BY R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y.C O M

T

H E WOR D “PRODIGY ” is often an overused and/or misapplied word. In the case of blues-rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the label is quite appropriate. Picking up the guitar at the tender age of seven after meeting the late guitar great Stevie Ray Vaughan, the guitar gods must have cast a special mantel on Kenny. He quickly gained a following and secured a record deal with none other than the legendary Irving Azoff by the time he was 18 years old. Since then, Kenny has had seven singles in the Top 10, and his second album called “Trouble Is...” is credited for holding the record for the longest-running album on the Billboard charts - due in part to the successful song “Blue on Black” that was ultimately re-recorded with Queen’s Brian May, Five Finger Death Punch, and Brantley Gilbert. No wonder the guitar wiz has been nominated for a Grammy five times! It comes as no surprise that Knoxville anxiously awaits Kenny’s concert on the 15th of this month at the Bijou Theatre. To talk about that show, Kenny called me from his car as he was en route to Memphis. Before we discussed what fans can expect in Knoxville, he reflected a bit on his career. “Yeah, man, I’m grateful. You know, we’re coming up on 30 years of doing all this, and it’s just remarkable to objectively look at it and to look back and go, ‘Hey, man, I’ve been doing this for 30 years, it’s still going pretty strong.’ That’s a testament to the fans, the genre that we play, the music that we play. I think it’s kind of a timeless kind of music. So, you know, the fans... they also become lifelong fans.” As for the blues genre, it has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity as gauged by Kenny’s popularity, his peers such as Eric Gales and Joe Bonamassa, as well as the stalwarts of the genre like Buddy Guy, Walter Trout, and others. I asked what Kenny attributed that resurgence to. “We have a lot of great performers in the genre right now. All those you mentioned: Eric Gales and Joe. There’s a lot of great female artists that are coming up. Joanne Shaw Taylor, Ally Venable, Larkin Poe, and, obviously, Shemekia Copeland, who, in my opinion, is the modern-day Queen of the Blues. So, there’s a lot of legitimately talented bands that are doing this kind

IN CONCERT WITH ALLY VENABLE BIJOU THEATRE • FEBRUARY 15

of music right now. I think it’s great that there’s this renewed interest in it - this kind of momentum behind it - because there are great fans and great artists out there that are able to support the renewed interest.” Kenny is conducting a 25th anniversary tour to commemorate the release of his “Trouble Is…” album. While Knoxville is not a part of that tour per se, there’s no doubt Kenny will be playing a song or two from that album. He is excited for his upcoming tour because he truly feels that those songs are just as much fun to play today. Kenny shared his thoughts about that album and its success. “I’ve actually been spending a lot of time listening to that record recently. All the stuff that was coming up, around it next year. And I agree, I think that the album sounds just as good today as it did the day we recorded it and released it. That’s always been my goal. My goal has always been to write great songs that are timeless and that could be listened to for generations to come. And I think the way we recorded that record, the way we produced that record we did everything the old-fashioned way. There’s not a lot of trickery that we use in the studio that makes it sound like it’s obviously straight out of the ’90s. It just sounds like a relevant record. “Obviously, there’s so much stuff that came from it, so much success, so many great accomplishments as a result of that record. So I’m proud of what we accomplished. I’m proud of the body of material that’s on the record and the quality of the songs, the

quality of production and songwriting, the depth of the lyrics, and the messages that we put forward in all of the music.” When asked how the music industry has changed over the years, Kenny lamented not being able to “watch (your music) climb the charts... but on the flip side you now have streaming.” Having the opportunity to connect directly with your fanbase through social media platforms, he said, is also an improvement. Kenny admits to not being the best at “posting” life moments, as he prefers to dedicate his spare time to his wife, Hannah (Gibson, eldest daughter of Mel Gibson), and their six children. Kenny also shared that, in addition to the tour that lands him in Knoxville this month, he has plans for a release of a new album, some streaming shows starting this month, and maybe a surprise or two. In preparation for the Knoxville show, fans would do well to not only listen to Kenny’s music, but to also check out or re-watch his documentary on the blues titled “10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads.” You can listen to my entire interview with Kenny by visiting Boomerocity.com. You can also keep up on the latest with him by visiting KennyWayneShepherd.net.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

The National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a regional scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and estabWork by Dennis Sabo lished artists working in a variety of media such as photography, acrylic, pencil, fibers, oil, paper, and more. More than $1,000 in cash awards will be announced at a brief awards ceremony on February 4 at 6 pm. Exhibiting artists include a wide array of artists from here in East Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, and Texas. Juror Tommie Rush is a glass artist who lives and maintains a studio in Knoxville. She began her early studies in ceramics, which ultimately led her to working in glass. Through tireless experimentation, she has created a unique and identifiable style which has been celebrated in more than 75 exhibitions. Her work can be found in numerous Work by Torrance Redford private and museum collections throughout the United States. As a supporter of the arts, she currently serves on the Public Art Committee, the UT Arts and Humanities Advisory Board, and on the Big Ears Board in Knoxville. settlers often intertwine. Reality and irony are everywhere we look. A bluegrass band plays the tunes of early ancestors. Angels are everywhere, and the Waffle House stands like a beacon on a hill. This is East Tennessee. Lisa Flanary is a professor of Art at Carson-Newman University, where she has taught since 1998. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States. New Works by Roberta Smashey in the Display Case Artist statement: I am a stained glass artist creating both nature-themed and abstract works using the glass foiling technique developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. By utilizing hand-made glass sheets of various colors and textures, I produce dynamic depictions of the beauty found in nature. The variations in artisanal glass give a unique feeling of depth and movement with this challenging medium. Using the Tiffany technique, coupled with the beauty of glass and a lifelong study of wildlife, I seek to evoke appreciation of our natural world in all who view my creations. Imagine: New Work by Peg Hess in the Atrium Peg Hess’s inaugural exhibition at the Emporium includes images from eight countries and five U.S. states. Her photographs include striking as well as tranquil landscapes, water, and the bright light of the sun. Artist statement exerpts: Growing up as a fifth generation East Tennessean in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, I often heard my father’s voice encouraging me to “look” at something intricate, beautiful, or unusual. Pausing, seeing, reflecting on, and taking in the wonder or puzzle of a moment or image became second nature to me. It is the foundation for my passion for photography. I am energized by being in solitude, particularly outdoors and in sacred spaces. Seeing with my camera yields an even richer experience, including noticing the sources of light and the mystery in shadows; magical, even otherworldly, reflections; intersecting angles and echoing shapes; contrasts in light, color, and textures; energy and movement; remarkably subtle color shifts; and natural and designed symmetry. Some photographs invite contemplation, others pull us in and we become immersed in making sense of what we see. Others evoke feelings - laughter, awe, a wish to become part of the moment depicted. As a photographer, I seek to create such photos to share with others. The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. Call 865-523-7543 for more information or visit www.knoxalliance.com.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

February 2022

H E N W E took over Everything Knoxville in the fall of 2020, editor Kendra and designer Meredith thankfully agreed to stay on and trust us going forward. It’s been an education for us, likely a bit painful for them, and a positive lesson in how complementary skills can work together! We thought this experience was worth sharing and wanted to introduce “the team” and elaborate a bit on how all the pieces fit. Kendra - Received a BA in Communication from George Mason University and began her career with a non-profit organization in Virginia, planning fundraising events and supporting the management team. After relocating to Knoxville to be closer to family, she worked with Knox County coordinating special events at World’s Fair Park and Volunteer Landing. Kendra joined EK during the first few issues and has been involved in distribution, editing, researching content, communication, and administrative responsibilities ever since. She truly enjoys the relationships she’s built with each and every advertiser - many of whom she has known for more than 10 years. I repeatedly hear: “Kendra is AWESOME!” from clients, as she is competent, helpful, and professional. Her attention to detail in

editing, planning, organizing, and communicating keeps us all moving in the right direction and collectively doing the best job we can for our clients and readers. Meredith - Holds a bachelor’s degree in Digital Design. Prior to her role with Everything Knoxville, she was a graphic designer in the newspaper industry, winning more than 50 Virginia Press Awards along the way. She’s been designing ads, magazines, newspapers, and children’s book illustrations for more than 20 years. In addition to supporting businesses with their design needs, she has a heart to serve others and shares her talent and time with worthy causes in her community and international mission trips. Meredith is a highly creative designer that comes up with amazing ideas and fresh looks that help our clients put their best message forward. We can’t begin to fathom how she does it (often many times in the same day!) but are extremely thankful and blessed that she does. Susan - Also a degreed designer, has learned that she enjoys the research and creative side involved in writing, editing, and bringing a client’s story and vision to reality. Her ability to see the big picture and details simultaneously helps make that happen. What I, personally, find to be exhausting and tedious she loves and thrives on. She is truly an “acts of service” person. Brett - My background is in sales and management in the small business environment. Obviously, a “people person!” As I develop and maintain client relationships in helping our advertisers succeed, I am often reminded that business basics are universal regardless of industry - listening, serving, communicating, and seeking to do what is right for all parties. Our involvement with Everything Knoxville began with an excited leap of faith, and thankfully Kendra and Meredith jumped with us. We have learned to act as a team - not resenting each other’s different approaches, but deciding to appreciate them. Relying on our unique perspectives, knowledge, and skills has taught us that we need each other. And that no skill is more valuable than another - an important lesson to learn at the tender age of fifty-something! The observation: “Team” is not just the current phrase. It can be a beautiful combining of different yet complementary skills. Letting each individual do what they do best and appreciating them for it. I am beyond grateful that these two fine professionals were willing to take the leap without knowing the outcome. And I encourage you to take stock in your “team” - whether business or home - to acknowledge the skill sets needed to fill our individual gaps and say “Thank You” for what you do!

Smooth Your Cellulite Before Summer Q

WO IS THE first and only FDA approved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Injections are administered in a series of three treatments spaced three weeks apart, and visible results may be achieved in 10 weeks. In clinical trials, women required no post-treatment downtime, and the effect lasted for more than a year.

About 90% of Women Deal with Cellulite Cellulite is a natural part of women’s biology. About 9 out of 10 women deal with it in their lifetime. Together, there are three things that cause cellulite’s signature dimples: Over time, skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension.

How QWO Targets Cellulite QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases. These enzymes are thought to target the structural causes under the skin, where cellulite starts. It’s thought that QWO works by releasing fibrous bands, redistributing fat cells, and stimulating the growth of new collagen.

People in the Know Are Loving QWO Since the injection’s FDA approval, QWO won a 2020 Future of Beauty Award from Elle Magazine and was labeled a top innovation in NewBeauty’s 2021 awards.
