From the Publisher At the beginning of a new year, I take time to stop and reflect on the past year. I look at the goals I set for myself personally and professionally and consider if they were met, exceeded, or simply ignored. In setting goals for this year, I’m taking the neglected ones and placing them at the top of the New Year’s list, making them a high priority. As I reflect on 2012, I realize that all of our business focus was on our advertisers and helping them craft a message to meet their goals. While this is essential for their success as well as ours, I have neglected to focus on you, our readers, who are instrumental in the success of the small business community. EK: As a MetLife Investment Advisor Representative, many of our readers might be surprised to learn that MetLife offers the same services as a full-service brokerage service. Clark: There really is no difference in what companies offer today. The barriers between banks, insurance companies, and brokerage houses have been eliminated. Everyone plays in the same sandbox. What matters are the relationship and the service you get from that

firm or individual. I’m a big believer in face-toface relationships. EK: Can you share with our readers a little bit about your formal education and investment experience and how the two combined help you assist others in developing individual short- and long-term investment strategies? Clark: My undergraduate degree is in Accounting from Carson-Newman. I also have an MBA from the Stetson School of Business and Economics at Mercer University in GA. The barriers to entry in my marketplace are relatively small, so just about anyone can get a license and call themselves an “advisor.” Clients should only deal with an advisor who has been in the business at least 15 years. This way you know they are doing something right. Every time the market corrects I learn something. Success follows a predictable course. EK: When you meet with clients, what emphasis do you place on education? Clark: It’s ALL about education. If clients understand the financial instruments out there today, then they understand what they’re saying yes to. People will make the right decisions for themselves if they have all the information. Having access to many different options is important. EK: How do you address the issues of safety when consulting with individual clients? Clark: Most of my clients are concerned about 3 things: 1) Regardless of their assets, most are worried about running out of money. 2) Most are wary of the potential of losing everything in a nursing home situation. 3) No one likes paying more taxes than they should. There are many ways to mitigate and transfer risk today, and education plays a big role. EK: How important is it for a good investment advisor to also be a good listener? Clark: Being a good listener and asking the right questions are hugely important. One question I always ask clients is “What is the intent of this money?” It may be income, legacy planning, or simply accumulation. The client knows

exactly what they want to do. I provide the education and products to do it the right way. EK: How important is it for clients to periodically review their investments and strategies? Clark: An annual review is a must, but a quarterly review is preferred. We send out approximately 600 letters every quarter requesting clients to come in for review. Quarter break is a very busy time for us. The reviews allow us to go over the sometime dramatic changes that have occurred in our equity markets during the past several years. No surprises with money are always a good thing. EK: Is it still possible for an investor to safely navigate today’s uncertain financial marketplace? Clark: Risk is inherent in everything an investor does. Even CD holders are subjected to risk. If CD holders are living off their principle and interest, then purchasing power risk and longevity risk are the two main ones. Understanding and managing risk is paramount in our conversations. Again,

understanding what the client wants to accomplish and educating them to that end is a very important goal in our meetings. Safety means different things to different people. We have to dig down and find out what that means to that individual. EK: Do you have any other thoughts that you’d like to share with our readers? Clark: My work is very meaningful, because we help clients manage risk (not just money), and we help them make the most of what they have. I really enjoy what I do.

Alex, a U.S. resident for more than two decades, acting in an advisory capacity with his associate, Rob Leahy, of Fine Rugs of Charleston, has been working with the United States Department of Commerce’s Afghanistan Investment & Reconstruction task force. The initiative, titled “Sheep to Shop,” is tasked with the responsibility of

identifying and addressing the challenges faced in today’s Afghanistan rug production supply chain and to propose and implement solutions. Alex, who is proficient in six languages and draws upon his firsthand knowledge of the Afghan culture, has already made his presence felt within this bold initiative. “This initiative has tremendous short- and long-term potential for my countrymen,” he said. “It offers an alternative to years of war and transforms hate into hope.” With 20% of Afghanistan’s entire population touched by the value chain of this woven-rug industry, the consequences of this initiative are enormous, with the nation’s future in the balance. Rug weaving and allied businesses touch five million people’s lives in Afghanistan. Weaving alone employs one million people and four million people are working on other segments of this industry. “I’m proud of my contribution thus far and look forward to continuing my efforts with the Department of Commerce,” said Alex. “I’m focusing on the marketing and sales of these hand-crafted treasures with my new rug gallery. challenging job, but one that Bobi King takes on proudly. Her efforts have paid off – she’s the only teacher in Tennessee selected this year for a Milken Educator Award, an honor given to exceptional teachers. Bobi was surprised with the award at a school assembly. “It was a very special day!” she said. “I was caught totally by surprise, and I consider it to be a great honor.” Bobi is in her ninth year teaching third grade at Farragut Intermediate School. Why 2013 May Be a Very Good Year If the fiscal cliff is averted, stocks may have all kinds of reasons to rise. Presented by Ali Swofford What if the future is more bullish than the bears assume? In addition to fiscal cliff

concerns, the market is anxious about Europe and the possibility of higher taxes on capital gains and dividends in 2013, plus surtaxes on varieties of net investment income.1 Even so, 2013 may turn out to be a good year for stocks. Our economy looks to be healing, and that may give investors more optimism.

A housing comeback appears evident.

Our economy won’t fully recover from the downturn until the housing market does. It appears that this is happening. The National Association of Realtors showed a 10.9% annual improvement in the existing homes sales, with the median sale price rising 11.1% to $178,600. The Census Bureau noted a 17.2% annual rise in new home sales.2,3,4 QE3 is open-ended. The Federal Reserve will keep buying mortgage-linked securities and will likely broaden the effort to include the purchase of Treasuries in 2013. Cheap money should be around in 2013, thanks to the Fed’s bond-buying efforts and dedication to maintaining historically low interest rates.5 Earnings could improve. The last earnings season was disappointing, but we could see gradual improvement, assuming Congress does something significant about the fiscal cliff. Citigroup sees earnings growth of 5% next year even with minor fiscal tightening.6

Consumer confidence may be translating into personal spending. In November, the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index reached a mark of 73.7; the highest level since February 2008.7

If we get a fix for the fiscal cliff, 2013 could be promising. There is a real sense that the U.S.

economy is headed for better times. Some year-end 2013 projections for the S&P are bullish: Deutsche Bank is seeing a year-end finish of 1,500, Bank of America Merrill Lynch sees the S&P reaching 1,600, and Piper Jaffray thinks it can make it up to 1,700.8 There are economists who think 2013 could be a key transitional year, a step toward a more robust economy by mid-decade. If solid economic indicators inspire companies and consumers to spend and invest more, this year might surprise even the most ardent stock market bears.

Beating the Odds Odds are that

if you are eating a Standard American Diet, the outcome may not be the results that you are hoping for. The statistics are clear: approximately 1.5 to 2 million Americans die every year from heart attacks, cancer, and strokes. Approximately 65% of all Americans are obese, and this obesity increases the risk of illnesses and death due to diabetes, stroke, coronary artery disease, and kidney and gallbladder disorders. The more overweight the person becomes, the higher the risk. To top it off, America ranks 37th in the world, behind most industrialized nations, in terms of its citizens’ life expectancy. The U.S. life expectancy is 78.2 years, while Japan ranks highest with a life expectancy of 82.7 years. It’s safe to say that a health crisis exists in the U.S., and this health crisis is due largely to the Standard American Diet. The Standard American Diet is full of many things that have no benefit to the body. Empty calorie is the term used for foods having energy but lacking in nutritional value. Processed carbohydrates, white rice, white bread, hydrogenated fats, sugar, food additives such as MSG, and sodium nitrates all contain empty calories and lack basic essentials of vitamins and minerals. C. Everett Koop, Surgeon General during the Reagan administration, has stated, “Dietary excesses or imbalances contribute to problems such as high blood pressure, dental disease, obesity, osteoporosis, and gastrointestinal disease. Together, these

diet-related conditions inflict a substantial burden of illness on Americans.” Hydrogenated fats are a major concern. Just consuming a donut or small serving of French fries regularly, which is equivalent to four grams of fat, caused considerable weight gain. A recent study was done with monkeys that were fed hydrogenated oil and were not fed in excess amount to warrant any weight gain, and yet the monkeys gained weight around the belly. The problem with gaining around the waist is not just the subcutaneous fat right below the skin, but it also includes visceral fat that surrounds internal organs, which have many more dangerous health consequences. According to the Mayo Clinic, visceral fat increases blood pressure, alters the good and bad cholesterol levels, and impairs the body’s ability to utilize insulin. Excess of any fat increases estrogen levels that can lead to strokes, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. Recent research associates belly fat with premature death. The good news is that we have the power to make positive changes in our health by simply making better dietary choices, including some selections of raw vegetables that supply the necessary enzymes missing in cooked foods. Choosing a variety of colorful vegetables, replacing refined carbohydrates with whole grains, and choosing fats such as avocados and olive oil over hydrogenated ones will go a long way to recovering our health. Not only will the belly fat drop, but the incident rate of diseases will drop as well. We really will be beating the odds as the pendulum swings in our favor for a better outcome.

› 3 cups peeled shredded sweet potatoes › 1 medium sweet apple, peeled and chopped › 1 cup pineapple cut into small 1/2 inch pieces › 1/2 cup pecans › 1/4 cup organic raisins Place in bowl and toss with Orange Dressing. Chill for 2 hours.

Orange Dressing › 1/2 cup fresh orange juice › 1/2 cup olive oil › 1/4 cup sunflower seeds, soaked overnight › 1/4 cup raw honey › 1/2 tsp sea salt Blend in blender until creamy. Toss with sweet potato slaw.

Key Lime Pie › 4 avocados, pitted and peeled › 1/4 cup fresh lime juice › 3/4 cup raw honey › 3/4 cup raw virgin coconut butter › 1 cup pine nuts, soaked 6 hours and drained › 1 Tbsp lime zest › Pinch sea salt Blend together, but not too long, as the avocado will turn dark. Place in a pecan date piecrust. You can freeze for 2 hours or place overnight in fridge.

Pecan Date Pie Crust Place 2 cups pecans and 1 cup dates in Cuisinart and blend until coarse texture. Pat into pie pan. Ready to use.

opening of The Mansion Restaurant located on the second level of the allnew Sweetwater Flower Shop took place in early December. “Not unlike any major undertaking of this nature, there has been a variety of unexpected delays and a few surprises,” said Jack Wilson, owner of Sweetwater Flower Shop. “But I think you will agree that it will have been worth the wait.” “Our goal of our December soft opening was to train staff, acclimate ourselves to our new kitchen, and refine our new menu,” stated Chef Lea Watson. “So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The Mansion menu items include:

The Mansion will also be hosting special evening events such as Valentine’s Day. This Valentine’s Day, The Mansion invites you and your sweetheart to enjoy a romantic dinner away from home in its elegant dining room. Dining will be by reservation only. t New Year’s, we reflect on the past and dream of the future. Every year has its ups and downs. For us, 2012 was both rewarding and sad. After five years, we moved into our new home in June, but we also lost JeanAnn’s only brother. We now have another angel to help shepherd us. Yore, wisdom, and belief led us. As a farm family, animal husbandry has been a part of our lifework. JeanAnn’s brother was a great teacher, and his insight will be missed. A past lesson learned, all seasons bring special issues for animals, and winter temperature fluctuations can be especially challenging. Here are a few tips for canine care: » Keep dogs warm and dry. Provide extra blankets and pads on hard surface floors. Prevent frostbite on ears, tails, and feet by reducing time outside.

» After walks rinse and dry dog’s feet. Salt used to melt ice can irritate feet

pads. Use a little petroleum jelly to soften the pads of feet and prevent tiny cuts and cracks

from developing.

» Groom properly.

Short or course haired dogs may get extra cold, so don’t have the coat cut too short. Towel dry immediately if dog gets wet and dry feet thoroughly. Longhaired dogs should have excess hair around toes and footpads trimmed to keep feet clean and dry. Consult with John, our groomer, regarding other winter weather tips. New Year’s Resolutions ew Year’s resolutions aren’t something new; in fact, they go back more than two thousand years to ancient Rome. The key figure in ancient Roman New Year’s resolutions was the God Janus, which is where we get the word January. For those of you who don’t know, Janus has one head but two faces, one in front and the other in back. Although there are many legends for the two faces, the ancient Romans believed that Janus could look back at the past and ahead to the future at the same time. This ability made Janus the ideal patron for New Year’s resolutions. Through history into the present, New Year’s has meant the same for most of us. New Year’s Day is a time to put the

old year behind us and start out fresh, with a new beginning. So, we know we are supposed to make them, and most of us do. Resolutions bring us focus, hope, and can also inspire action. What resolutions do you have for 2013? For the “lighter side” of life, let’s think about our fashion resolutions…. 10. Clean out your closet so your clothes actually need a hangar to suspend in your closet. 9. Never again buy something you think you might fit into when you lose those 10 pounds. pies, casseroles, and turkey, your oven is probably in desperate need of a good cleaning. The self-cleaning cycle on an oven can be a lifesaver. The cycle raises the temperature in your oven to about 900 degrees, so it burns off anything that spilled while you were baking. If you don’t have a self-cleaning oven, you can clean your oven when it’s cold by placing a bowl of ammonia on the top rack and a bowl of boiling water on the bottom. Leave it overnight and wipe the oven clean in the morning. Dishwashers can get rust stains and mineral buildup or have a foul odor, so it’s important to maintain them. If you have rust stains in your dishwasher, you can put citric acid, such as Orange Tang, in the soap dispenser and then run a cycle. Running a cycle with a bowl of three cups of vinegar on the bottom rack can get rid of mineral buildup. Sometimes food trapped in the bottom filter causes odor. If this is the case, you can put a cup of baking soda in the dishwasher and run a rinse cycle. The washing machine is another appliance that needs to be cleaned regularly. Running a cycle with a cup of bleach and no clothes will clean the drums and eliminate any musty odors. It’s important to leave the door open after you run a load, so it can completely dry out. If you have a front-loading washer, wipe the door seal and glass with a dry cloth after you finish your laundry. Cleaning and maintaining your appliances make take a little time, but will add years to the life of your appliances, making it completely worth it. Blessings in Disguise I wanted to write an eloquent article about thankfulness in November. Sure, it would take more fingers than I have to list the blessings God has blessed us with, but to be honest, I didn’t feel very thankful. As I tried to write that article, it felt forced and fake. So I gave up and wrote something about preparing your home for football parties instead! Recently I ran into an old friend I hadn’t spoken to in more than a year. As we recounted our lives to one another, I was overwhelmed by the change in my perspective. Last year brought our Aspergers son leaps and bounds in his social abilities and awareness. It provided a wonderful year for the business. It also brought me cancer. As a result, I lost a vocal cord. Normally a talkative “live out loud” kind of girl, I found myself without a voice. I love to share my life with those I love. With only a whisper, I withdrew from my friends and reserved my weak voice for important moments with my family. Last year also brought our family a crisis,

which brought us to our knees in desperation. As a family we have prayed fervently every night for several years about a particular situation. As we prepared ourselves for the worst, we stayed outwardly optimistic for the sake of the younger kids. It became impossible to imagine a good ending. We had to force ourselves to concentrate on one day at a time to preserve our sanity. We are hopeful that surgery this month

will bring my voice back. In my relative “silence” the past eight months, I have been a student of “listening.” I am thankful to know my children and my husband at a deeper level. I am thankful that I have been forced to react without yelling or lecturing. As for the family crisis we have been weathering? I believe that my silence has created the opportunity for God to speak and be heard. For the first time, our family has real hope in this desperate situation. It’s not the way we planned it or could have imagined it, but we are truly thankful for the good times and the bad of 2012. I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest blessings don’t start out that way. I hope to remember in 2013 that ALL things are possible through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. January in the Garden It’s time to bid farewell to 2012 and move on into 2013. I won’t miss the past year, but I’m looking toward the New Year with both anticipation and dread. This is going to be a year of changes for me, and I’m not as adaptable to change as I’d like to be. I have a milestone birthday coming up, my eldest will graduate college, and I’ll join the ranks of the other “empty-nesters” out there as my “baby” graduates high school. I know Rodney and I will be able to do more things, the bills will be lower (except we will still have three college students), and this is the natural progression of things, but it’s still going to be an adjustment. That was my whine for the day, so now we can talk about gardening. Be forewarned, however: I may be nutty as a fruitcake by May. I’ll try to get as much information out in the next couple of months as possible, so if I’m writing gibberish by the end of spring, you’ll still have things to do.

›› Priority one topic is water! It has been a very dry fall and early winter. If you haven’t been watering newly planted (this year) shrubs and trees, you may lose them. I’ve been watering shrubs I planted in the fall every week or two since October. ›› Houseplants are the

next topic. How are yours doing? If they spent last summer outside, they may have had a temper tantrum when you brought them in. Shorter days and the lower humidity of interior air don’t make some plants happy. Try a sunny spot and a tray of water nearby. They also like humidifiers. If they’ve gotten dusty, give them a quick sponge bath or put small ones in the sink and rinse them off. This advice doesn’t apply to African violets! Dust them off with a soft paintbrush.

›› If you don’t have any houseplants because you kill them all, you may want

to try some of the succulents we have gotten in. They are very popular now, because they are so cute and easy to grow. Basically, they thrive on benign neglect. I like them, because my cats don’t eat them, but they also make a really attractive container.

›› Winter is the season for planning. Take advantage of boring afternoons and look through magazines, seed catalogs, and gardening journals to start planning what you want to do this year in your yard. Is it time for a new flower bed, a remake of an existing bed, or a start-all-over again project? ›› Seeds can be started indoors for annuals, perennials, and herbs. This is a really cool project to get children and/or grandchildren involved in. All you really need is soil, pots, seeds, and a sunny window or light source. Ah, the miracle of nature! ›› You can also clean, sharpen, and oil your tools on gloomy days. Or, you can go shopping for new tools to replace worn out or lost tools! ›› If the weather is nice and you want to get outside, check out the weed situation. It’s amazing how fast chickweed, henbit, and wild onions can take over a bed. Weeding is also a good antidote for cabin fever. Remember, herbicides don’t work when it’s cold, so you have to do it by hand. ›› You can still plant pansies to perk up a gloomy landscape. If you don’t have a flower bed, a pot of pansies on your porch or beside your doorway adds a little cheer.

›› For those of you who have been chomping at the bit to prune something, go ahead and do your summer bloomers such as roses, crepe myrtles, and butterfly bushes now. Make sure your pruners are sharp so you don’t tear the branches. Remember that you can always take off a little more, but you cannot put any back on, so go slowly! Do not prune spring bloomers or hydrangeas. If you have a question about a plant, please call before you start whacking. ›› Don’t forget the birds. Keep feeders clean and full with a good quality seed, and provide a birdbath if you are able. The bath will need to be cleaned and refilled weekly, and the feeder may have to be refilled daily. Many plants in our gardens remain unnoticed most of the year. They seem to sit helplessly as green blobs in the landscape; however, when it’s their time to shine, they really pull out all the stops.

with Euonymus americanus, commonly known in some parts of the country as strawberry bush. In this part of the world, this euonymus is also known by the more down-home name, “Hearts-a-Bustin.” It’s so named for the plant’s unique four-lobed seed capsules, which open in September and early October to reveal a fiery-red collection of dangling seeds from its interior. These seeds can persist late into the year and add splashes of red to the late-season landscape. Strawberry bush is a sprawling, multistemmed shrub that grows from four feet to six feet high. As the plant matures, it becomes more erect and stems become thicker and more heavily branched. It has a lazy appearance and would be best left to its own imperfections in a woodland or naturalized garden. Native to the eastern United States,

strawberry bush grows from zones 6 to 9 and prefers slightly acidic, shady sites. If it is planted in a sunnier spot, make sure it is mulched and watered well. This plant can also handle somewhat drier, understory shady situations. Flowers appear in spring and are greenish-white and fairly inconspicuous. Deer have been known to graze on this plant and seem to love the tender leaves and stems. Humans should take the red color of the seeds as a warning; they are known to be a strong laxative and cause severe diarrhea. In fact, this genus of plants in general is considered poisonous to humans. Strawberry bush is prone to euonymus scale and crown gall. However, these problems are minor when compared with the susceptibility of other landscape euonymus like burning bush (E. alatus) or wintercreeper euonymus (E. fortunei). With proper placement and care, Euonymus americanus is sure to add seasonal interest to the woodland garden during the winter.

She died in her 90s in 1984 after a lifetime of sharing her memories and stories about the home’s history. Related McCartt family members owned and cared for the property thereafter. Here are just a few of the Kelly family’s memories from various sources relating to the Civil War:

Earliest Saddlebag Log Home in Area to Be Saved

he opportunity to document and interpret the North Cumberland Plateau’s first white settlement through early 19th century historic buildings is rare to non-existent. That’s why the nearly 200-year-old Stonecipher/Kelly/ McCartt log house and its surrounding land in Morgan County is so important. Today its current owners are working with this writer and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance to carry out security measures at the house and achieve state ownership for eventual public use. Virtually all the home’s original interior and exterior material is intact, protected by many layers of later materials applied by the three interrelated families who owned and lived in it. While much is known about this unique historic house still standing between Wartburg and Oliver Springs, much more remains to be learned through genealogical and archival records, interviews with family descendants, and on-site research and assessment. Many of today’s descendants of all three families are eager to share their knowledge and family records and see the home and land preserved. Along with the Samuel Hall family, Joseph Marion Stonecipher (originally Steinseiffer) and his sons were the first permanent white

settlers around 1807/08 into the wilderness that is now Morgan County. They came from the northwest corner of North Carolina. The Stoneciphers settled various tracts of a Revolutionary War land grant in the beautiful Emory River valley and its tributaries. By 1814, one of the sons, Ezra B. Stonecipher, had constructed an unusually large two-story log home with a third level loft on a portion of the land grant adjacent to today’s Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area. It was built in the saddlebag style, with a massive cut stone chimney in the center of the house and two-story “pens” on each side. Early census records list Ezra as a gunsmith and furniture maker, which helps explain the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail still evident in the home today. The first floor logs are hand-hewn white oak. Lighter weight poplar logs were used for second floor walls. Half-dovetail notching was employed to join the corners, a common German building method. The floors on all three levels are wide heart pine boards. Finishing methods unusual for early log homes include beaded wall paneling and rafters, with wooden pegging throughout. All the boards are hand planed and some chamfered. Sometime in the decade after the home was built, James Martin Kelly became the owner. Several intermarriages link the Stonecipher and Kelly family, and it was four generations of Kellys who lived in the home for the next 160+ years. They operated a general store and

“There’s a storage room on the second floor behind the chimney where valuables were hidden from the soldiers during the Civil War.” “Lilly’s grandfather, Daniel Kelly, escaped from a Union prison in Kentucky and walked all the way home.” “Grandmother Julia Stonecipher, a tiny little woman, knocked her churn from the hands of a soldier who had snatched it.” “When James Martin Kelly was killed by bushwhackers near Knoxville, his wife, Malinda Hall Kelly, rode her horse through the Union lines to her husband’s grave.” James Martin’s wife and daughter are buried on a slope in the back of the house, their gravestones’ engraving still legible today. Daughter Cloey Arminda died in 1843 at the age of 15. Malinda Hall Kelly died in 1872 at age 64. If preservation and protection efforts are successful, the Stonecipher/Kelly/ McCartt family home will someday share its two centuries of North Cumberland Plateau history.

2013 King Week The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission Announces Schedule of Events and Theme BEGINNING JANUARY 16

ince 1982, the MLK Commission has been organizing a special celebration each year for the Knoxville area to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The weeklong celebration focuses on providing education and leadership training for adults and youth and promotes reconciliation through peaceful conflict resolution. Part of the celebration also includes stories of racial struggles with emphasis on non-violence, equality, and love. This year’s celebration will take on a special emphasis of education and will embody the theme of “Intelligence plus Character.” The guiding light for 2013 will be Sarah Moore Greene, Knoxville’s leader in the civil rights movement and in the education of all children. Ms. Greene passed away August 15 at the age of 92, but her spirit and legacy will be the stimulus for this year’s celebration. The celebration will begin with an opening prayer service that brings together people of all denominations. That program will be held at the First Christian Church at noon on Wednesday, January 16. The events the rest of the week will include the annual Leadership Awards Luncheon, a community forum hosted by OREPA, special training sessions for area teachers and youth, and a leadership educational symposium open for everyone. Three of the celebration events emphasize the arts. The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra will perform a MLK tribute concert on the MLK Holiday, January 21; other singers, dancers, and actors will present a special “night with the arts” program at Knoxville College; and 14 Knox County art teachers will organize a display of original art in the Gallery of the Bijou Theatre emphasizing the life of Dr. King. A highlight of the celebration will be the annual MLK Memorial Parade followed by the MLK Memorial Tribute Service. For more information, visit www.MLK Knoxville.org.

Lea Watson’s true passion is food, and she’s excited to open her newest endeavor in East Tennessee. She’s the owner and chef of The Mansion Restaurant, which opened at the beginning of December upstairs in the newly renovated Sweetwater Flower Shop. “I am so excited about this new adventure,” Lea said. “Jack Wilson, the owner of Sweetwater Flower Shop, and I have a mutual friend who thought that our talents would complement each other. The restaurant offers several salads and sandwiches that remain on the menu every day with a daily special and homemade dessert.” The Mansion is open for l u n c h Tu e s d ay t h ro u g h Saturday, and the space is available to book for special events in the evenings. They have been very open to trying things that they haven’t had before, many of which have now become their favorites. I enjoy hearing them talk about the dishes they are trying. They are becoming my best salespeople. The response from my customers has brought me such joy.”

She worked in banking and as a secretary for a while before deciding the food industry was where she belonged, so she earned a bachelor’s degree in food systems administration from Northern Illinois University, then completed an internship at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and London. “I start each morning preparing the dessert for the day,” she said. “I prepare desserts that you would find in the South. comment on the fiscal cliff debacle currently underway in Washington prior to its resolution, regardless of the outcome. I believe that the most looming challenge facing our nation today is that we ask our leaders to wear two hats: that of a statesperson and that of a politician. The two could not be more diametrically opposed. A statesperson, you would think, would make decisions that represented the best interest of the constituents they represent. A politician, on the other hand, would make decisions that would enhance their likelihood of being re-elected. I believe this paradox has been harmful to our country, resulting in inequities, inefficiencies, occasional corruption, and some portion of the blame for the most recent recession, just to name a few. My solution? Simple, actually. Eliminate presidential and congressional salaries. I

believe our elected leaders should be compensated based on results. Form an independent body that can monitor results such as changes to unemployment, education, deficit, GDP, and other key indicators. Politicians should enjoy unlimited income potential, and no floor either. Their incomes would be based entirely on the results they produce. Sound unachievable? Not at all. Millions of self-employed Americans from all political parties go to work daily, accepting that their fortunes will be based entirely on the results they produce each day. Performance-based compensation could go a long way in ending many of the seemingly insurmountable issues confronting our nation. In addition, few people from any political party would likely disagree that reduced unemployment, increased GDP, and deficit reduction are not in their personal best interest, no matter how partisan they may be.

One voice in hundreds of millions? Not likely. But there are millions of self-employed Americans – democrat, republican, and independent alike – that prove that performance-based compensation provides the necessary incentive required to produce a good, product, or service that benefits both the customer and the business owner alike, and the higher the service level, the greater the reward. Just imagine our unlimited potential if we’d all pulled in the same direction.

eo pl e -watc h i n g is grossly underrated. So much can be learned from observing others, especially when done introspectively. Recently I met a group of women for dinner and a movie. As we sat in the restaurant, I scanned the room to notice who was around. All the tables were full, thus people watching was easy. At the table beside us were a man, presumably a father, and two small children who appeared early elementary school aged. The younger one, a little girl, was bouncy and excited and wanted her dad’s attention. He was scanning his smartphone, totally distracted. After a few moments, the girl took the drastic measure of inserting her cute little face in between the man and his phone. She was relentless! That little girl was going to win the battle for her dad’s attention. Ouch. In my amusement, I chuckled at the girl’s tenacity, yet the lesson was obvious. If you are going to be there, then be there. This is a common trap for most, as we are e-connected continuously. While phones can increase productivity, they can wreak havoc in everyday communication. For most people, this constant invasion of intimacy can be quite offensive and

erode relationships greatly over time. We are in the business of people; at work, at home, and beyond. The measure of our success is likely linked to the success of our relationships. Thus as trends change, we must acknowledge that some things always ring true. People are important. While other things are important, nothing is more than the people in our lives. Value others by giving them your undivided attention. Practice the art of making others feel important. Listen! Many people never stop talking long enough to hear what others may have to say. Take time to listen to others, and fight the urge to speak while they are speaking. Maintain good eye contact, and be quiet! Now with smartphones, it is amazing how many people listen while surfing the internet. Practice the art of listening. Reflect. Take time to reflect; success, failure, people, goals, accomplishments, disappointments. Many of life’s greatest lessons are found in experience. Just like you treat others with value, do the same for yourself. Take time to reflect, learn, and grow introspectively. Allow time for yourself. Practice the art of silence. As you plan the New Year, give yourself a new kind of challenge. Name three key relationships

you want to improve. Use these simple strategies, treat them as important, listen, and reflect. If you do, you will enjoy positive change. The most important aspect of any organization is managing and growing people. While it’s simple, it’s far from easy. It’s much more comfortable to hide behind busy. Pay attention to others when in lobbies while waiting on appointments. Some of the best contacts come from unplanned introductions; unscripted meetings that just happened. If you are looking to make 2013 a successful year, then plan accordingly. Establish goals, compile budgets, and schedule meetings. Just don’t overlook your most valuable asset. Your business is people.

Women We Know… Strong, Courageous, and Resilient

’ll never forget the night I sang the National Anthem for a professional sports team. It was my big moment, singing in front of tens of thousands of people at the Miami Heat game. I was prepared, beautifully dressed, sporting a new shade of lipstick, and I was nine months pregnant. Against my doctor’s advice, since I was already two days past due, I couldn’t pass up this incredible honor and opportunity. I waddled out to center court and sang my little heart out. The crowd went nuts, and all went well. This moment is embedded in my memory as a life-changing experience, because Cindi Alpert now, whenever I’m nervous, whether it’s performing a concert or giving a presentation, I think back to that moment frozen in time at the Miami Heat game and remind myself that no matter how much I stumble my words or mess up a song, at least I won’t go into labor. It gets me through every time. I asked some notable women I’ve met in Knoxville to share some of their stories, and I was overwhelmed with the response. I couldn’t fit all the amazing stories on one page, so this is going to be one of a two-part piece on women we know. These women are strong, courageous, and resilient. The hard part was asking them to sum up a life changing experience in 200 words or less. Here’s what they had to say.

Knoxville Mayor When I’m asked about an experience that was intimidating for me or pushed me to move out of my comfort zone, my mind immediately recalls my first foray in politics. I was 37 years old and received a call from an elected official who encouraged me to run on the Democratic ticket for county commission against a Republican who had held the seat for 24 years. My first reaction

was “I’m not qualified.” But he encouraged me to look into it, and I began to talk to friends, read books about running for office, and learn about county commission. I had several strikes against me: I wasn’t from Knoxville, I had an ethnic-sounding name that was difficult to pronounce and spell, I was, by then, divorced with two children, ages 11 and 14, and I had worked with farm workers and non-profit organizations – not your typical jobs for Knoxville politicians. My friends kept encouraging me, so I filed my papers for the election on the last day. My opponent was a gentleman who didn’t campaign much, because he just didn’t Madeline Rogero figure I was a threat. The few times I did see him in public, he would greet me warmly and introduce me to his friends, saying, “This is my opponent. Isn’t she pretty?” Well, I just smiled and tried to be as “pretty” as possible, so he wouldn’t think of me as a threat. The common political wisdom was that we couldn’t win, but we did. By a landslide. My opponent’s wife was quoted as saying, “We don’t know what happened.” However, nobody was more surprised than me! I’m glad I took that first step, because it eventually led to the best job I’ve ever had: being mayor of Knoxville.

Speech Language Pathologist I’m a 47 year old, Speech-Language Pathologist, homeschooling mother of two. I’ve never participated in sports. However, two years ago, while enrolling my eight year old son in a Judo class, I mentioned to his coach that the sport looked fun. He cautiously noted my enthusiasm, mentioned that Judo is a rough sport, and recommended me to an adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class. BJJ is defined as a martial art, combat sport, self defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. “Yeah, that sounds less rough,” I thought nervously. My husband and

I attended the first class together. He warned me that I might get hurt and that I couldn’t cry. It’s now been more than two years since that first class. I admit I was nervous before every class for the first six months, but I persevered. I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone, and with the encouragement of my family and teammates at TN BJJ, I even competed and won a Bronze Medal in the 2011 Tennessee State BJJ Championship, fighting girls literally half my age. I am now a onestripe blue belt. However, the best part was not losing 20 lbs and gaining strength and flexibility. The best part was when my 11 year old daughter decided to step out of her comfort zone and Darla Oringderff said, “Mom, I want to try Judo, too. I’ve been watching you, and if you can do it, I can, too.” She said the same thing after my competition, and she went on to win a Silver Medal in the UT Judo Tournament. I may be getting older, but I’m not getting old. I still want to learn new things and challenge myself. I want to be a good example to my children to do the same.

Business Owner/bath junkie At the age of 21, I lost both of my parents within a six month span. This was obviously a traumatic, life-changing event which molded me into who I am today. From that early age I made a conscious decision to press on and persevere no matter what life throws at me. As an only child, I had to quickly gain the Amber Roggeman strength and independence to carry on, because I know that is what my parents would have wanted. That early experience plays a significant role in my professional life today as a small business owner.

When Only One Set of Grandparents Chooses to be Involved

hat do you do

when one set of grandparents is involved with their grandchildren and the other set of grandparents seem to be uninterested in creating a relationship with them? They make little to no effort to spend time with their grandchildren, get involved in their lives, or develop their own relationship with them. Not only does your heart ache for your children, but you also find yourself struggling with your own feelings. Of course, you want both sets of grandparents to be part of your children’s lives, and you don’t understand why your parents don’t want the same thing… particularly when it’s your parents who don’t seem interested in your children. You cringe at the thought of your children feeling the pain, hurt, and abandonment you fear they will feel due to the lack of involvement by one set of grandparents. What you tend to do, then, is try to make it happen. You’ll go out of your way to

get your uninvolved, uninterested parents to spend time with your children. It becomes hurtful, painful, and frustrating to both you and your spouse, particularly the one whose parents are acting this way. So, what can you, as parents, do in this situation? You want your children to experience the love and interaction only grandparents can give. You want your children to experience the joy of this special relationship; create memories around this relationship. As hard as this may be, you need to let go of your own desires and let the grandparents create whatever relationship they choose to have (or not have) with their grandchildren. It’s their relationship. To make it easier to do this, know that your children will be ok. They don’t see this relationship the same way you do. They view it as “this is just my grandma and grandpa.” It’s not good or bad… it just is. This is their relationship with their grandparents. You can also focus on the people who are in relationship with your children, not

the people who choose not to be. The other set of grandparents, your friends, other family members, and so on. You have many people who do value them, who do want to be part of their lives. Those are the people who matter. Trying to get people involved who show no interest will only frustrate and hurt you, and you will end up doing all the work to create their relationship. If you stop doing the work, be assured they will not pick up the slack. As hard as this may be to accept, please know your parents’ lack of interest in your children is not a reflection of you or your children. It is a reflection of them. Goals Mean Success

elcome to 2013!

Wow, it’s really here. As you know, starting a new year is a great time to re-evaluate our lives and look for areas for improvement, but also recognize what is right in our lives and be grateful. There are many traits to ladies and gentlemen that are worthy to mention. The one we’ll discuss this month is being goal oriented. One thing I have noticed about the ladies and gentlemen I admire the most is they tend to be very goal oriented. Having goals, writing them down, both long-term and short-term, is what keeps our lives better organized, gives us real purpose, and blesses us with the joy of accomplishment. This is a great month to begin this exercise. Here’s the assignment. Think of what you would like to be different in your life five years from now. Be realistic, but don’t be afraid to reach high and dream a little. Where would you like to live? Who 74

would you like to be working for? What would you like to weigh? What would you like to accomplish? Write down at least one fiveyear goal, but preferably two or three. The next step is to break down each longterm goal into five short-term goals. What five things do you need to accomplish for each of your long-term goals to be achieved? (These must be things that you do have control over.) These five short-term goals can be goals that can take you up to five years for you to accomplish, but lead you to your longer goals. Finally, for each short-term goal, make at least two immediate goals that you can achieve in the next 30-90 days. At the end of each immediate goal period, re-assess your immediate goals to reflect your accomplishments. This process might sound redundant, unnecessary, or too time consuming. This is not true. The time and effort many of us spend going in circles each day without accomplishing much can be truly exhausting and a waste of our valuable time. Make each

moment count. Make sure that your day is filled with at least a few moments devoted to your goals, so you can feel each day was a step closer to your long-term goals. There is great satisfaction from this exercise. This can be your new lifestyle. I have found that when I am goal oriented, I am happier, better fulfilled, and more at peace with my life. All of us want to accomplish great things and be a positive influence on society. Start with setting a goal. Ladies and gentlemen are people of accomplishment, because they are people with a purpose.
