About the Cover

From the Publisher At the beginning of a new year, I take time to stop and reflect on the past year. I look at the goals I set for myself personally and professionally and consider if they were met, exceeded, or simply ignored. In setting goals for this year, I’m taking the neglected ones and placing them at the top of the New Year’s list, making them a high priority. As I reflect on 2012, I realize that all of our business focus was on our advertisers and helping them craft a message to meet their goals. While this is essential for their success as well as ours, I have neglected to focus on you, our readers, who are instrumental in the success of the small business community. You are the ones we look to for the support of small business.

IKAP

So for 2013, one of my top business priorities is to gain input from our readers. We have met many of you in shops, restaurants, and at social gatherings, and we appreciate hearing the compliments about our publication and how we present small business. But now I ask if you have suggestions of topics that are of interest so we can enhance your reading experience. Going into the New Year, we at Everything Knoxville will continue to support our small business leaders by delivering their message into your homes. We will also welcome your input and incorporate your suggestions to enhance our advertisers’ messages. So please let us know how we are doing, and from all of us at Everything Knoxville, we wish all our advertisers and readers a very PUBLISHER + EDITOR IN CHIEF happy and prosperous New Year!

financial times, as investors seek investment strategies to preserve and grow their personal wealth, secure their future retirement objectives, help save for their children’s college educations, and a myriad of other financial goals, a well thought-out and carefully implemented investment strategy makes perfect sense. Clark offers each of his clients a high level

of investment products and personalized planning based on a thorough evaluation of each client’s individual needs and designed to achieve agreed upon portfolio objectives within each person’s risk threshold. With more than $135 million under management, Clark offers two decades of financial investment expertise to a variety of clients with diverse objectives, from those clients just starting out, to seasoned clients, to employer retirement plans.

EK: As a MetLife Investment Advisor Representative, many of our readers might be surprised to learn that MetLife offers the same services as a full-service brokerage service. Clark: There really is no difference in what companies offer today. The barriers between banks, insurance companies, and brokerage houses have been eliminated. Everyone plays in the same sandbox. What matters are the relationship and the service you get from that

firm or individual. I’m a big believer in face-toface relationships. EK: Can you share with our readers a little bit about your formal education and investment experience and how the two combined help you assist others in developing individual short- and long-term investment strategies? Clark: My undergraduate degree is in Accounting from Carson-Newman. I also have an MBA from the Stetson School of Business and Economics at Mercer University in GA. The barriers to entry in my marketplace are relatively small, so just about anyone can get a license and call themselves an “advisor.” Clients should only deal with an advisor who has been in the business at least 15 years. This way you know they are doing something right. Every time the market corrects I learn something. Success follows a predictable course. EK: When you meet with clients, what emphasis do you place on education? Clark: It’s ALL about education. If clients understand the financial instruments out there today, then they understand what they’re saying yes to. People will make the right decisions for themselves if they have all the information. Having access to many different options is important. EK: How do you address the issues of safety when consulting with individual clients? Clark: Most of my clients are concerned about 3 things: 1) Regardless of their assets, most are worried about running out of money. 2) Most are wary of the potential of losing everything in a nursing home situation. 3) No one likes paying more taxes than they should. There are many ways to mitigate and transfer risk today, and education plays a big role. EK: How important is it for a good investment advisor to also be a good listener? Clark: Being a good listener and asking the right questions are hugely important. One question I always ask clients is “What is the intent of this money?” It may be income, legacy planning, or simply accumulation. The client knows

Clark with client Barbara White

exactly what they want to do. I provide the education and products to do it the right way. EK: How important is it for clients to periodically review their investments and strategies? Clark: An annual review is a must, but a quarterly review is preferred. We send out approximately 600 letters every quarter requesting clients to come in for review. Quarter break is a very busy time for us. The reviews allow us to go over the sometime dramatic changes that have occurred in our equity markets during the past several years. No surprises with money are always a good thing. EK: Is it still possible for an investor to safely navigate today’s uncertain financial marketplace? Clark: Risk is inherent in everything an investor does. Even CD holders are subjected to risk. If CD holders are living off their principle and interest, then purchasing power risk and longevity risk are the two main ones. Understanding and managing risk is paramount in our conversations. Again,

understanding what the client wants to accomplish and educating them to that end is a very important goal in our meetings. Safety means different things to different people. We have to dig down and find out what that means to that individual. EK: Do you have any other thoughts that you’d like to share with our readers? Clark: My work is very meaningful, because we help clients manage risk (not just money), and we help them make the most of what they have. I really enjoy what I do.

New Year’s Resolution #1: Organized Living

I

f you’re anything like me,

you’ve no doubt asked yourself, “How did I accumulate all this stuff, and how do I store it?” Well, as the mother of two boys, I understand your dilemma. A lot of family mementos accumulated over time have emotional value and deserve a place in the home. Other items are simply stored away for future use. (And, face it: some of it has to go!) The problem with our everyday “stuff” is that our closets, garages, attics, and basements don’t seem to be able to manage it all, at least not in an organized or functional way. Well, I have the perfect solution: Closet Solutions! As owner of Closet Solutions for more than 15 years, I have developed a systematic approach to help area homeowners overcome their clutter and organize every area of the home – closet, pantry, mudroom, laundry room, home office, basement, garage – you name it. I’ve assembled the area’s most creative team of designers who are prepared to help you tackle your most challenging problems. Our customers also really appreciate a visit to our showroom. Looking at materials in a catalog or online can’t compare with seeing how the storage options and accessories would look and operate in a home-like setting. I also want people to know that although we feature the solid shelving, we use a wide variety of products to meet homeowners’ needs. Did you know that in addition to working with individual clients, we design and install closets for many area builders and developers? Using our quality wire, laminate, or a combination of both, we truly have a design solution for everyone’s budget. Once we’ve got you organized, head to our Hardware Gallery to see the area’s largest selection of decorative hardware. Replacing your old hardware with some up-to-date knobs and pulls is a great way to put the finishing touch to your organized, clutter-free home. Whether your entire home requires reorganizing or just one closet, we can help you turn that resolution into reality. Visit us today and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from working with our creative, experienced design and installation team. We are more than just closets! Not just solutions, but Closet Solutions!

A Tradition of Hope for the Future “Handcrafted Oriental

rugs can achieve far more than enhancing the atmosphere of virtually any room in your home. They can also tell a story: one rich in traditional history and another that offers the promise and hope of a bright future,” said Alex Zahir, owner of Knoxville-based AZ International, LLC, merchants of many of the finest hand-woven rugs available in the marketplace today. Alex sells more than extraordinary works of art. He offers beautifully hand-crafted rugs that contribute to the décor in your home and can become a legacy within your family as it’s passed on from generation to generation. But there’s another legacy at hand; that of three generations of rug weaving history that Alex first experienced as a child in his native Afghanistan. “As a child, I witnessed the entire hand-woven rug weaving process, from the natural dying of handspun wool, to the weaving of intricate patterns that transcend description, to the finishing of the finished rug,” said Alex. “We’re proud of the works of art we created and continue to create. We’re part of a thousand of year’s old tradition of beautifully hand-crafted rugs that tell the history of a people and a region.” But there’s another story that reaches far beyond these individual works of art. It’s the future of Afghanistan and its people and an industry that has been ravaged by decades of war. It’s the story of an initiative to revitalize this industry and its people, in the face of adversity, to offer Afghanistan the stability, peace, and hope for the future it deserves. Alex, a U.S. resident for more than two decades, acting in an advisory capacity with his associate, Rob Leahy, of Fine Rugs of Charleston, has been working with the United States Department of Commerce’s Afghanistan Investment & Reconstruction task force. The initiative, titled “Sheep to Shop,” is tasked with the responsibility of

identifying and addressing the challenges faced in today’s Afghanistan rug production supply chain and to propose and implement solutions. Alex, who is proficient in six languages and draws upon his firsthand knowledge of the Afghan culture, has already made his presence felt within this bold initiative. “This initiative has tremendous short- and long-term potential for my countrymen,” he said. “It offers an alternative to years of war and transforms hate into hope.” With 20% of Afghanistan’s entire population touched by the value chain of this woven-rug industry, the consequences of this initiative are enormous, with the nation’s future in the balance. Rug weaving and allied businesses touch five million people’s lives in Afghanistan. Weaving alone employs one million people and four million people are working on other segments of this industry. “I’m proud of my contribution thus far and look forward to continuing my efforts with the Department of Commerce,” said Alex. “I’m focusing on the marketing and sales of these hand-crafted treasures with my new rug gallery. Each rug I sell represents a rich tradition and history, a legacy for your family, and a contribution to the stability and hope for a people who, like you, strive for peace for their family. Readers interested in learning more about the “Sheep to Shop” initiative to aid the people of Afghanistan, and to discover why the area’s leading designers rely on AZ International to assist them in the home decorating projects, are encouraged to visit Alex at AZ’s showroom at 5215 Kingston Pike. New Year, New You:

Let The Shrimp Dock Help You with a Healthy Diet Now for Better Health Later

Taste the difference fresh makes!

Knoxville’s Only Fresh Seafood Market Be sure: Your fish is fresh, never frozen You know where your fish comes from Your fish is delivered daily Your tuna is sashimi grade Your sales staff is knowledgeable You buy from a reputable dealer You are getting what you pay for

The Shrimp Dock has been part of the Knoxville

food scene for almost 20 years and is the area’s top seller of fresh fish and shrimp. Why? Because what we are all about is freshness. Our mission is to provide the freshest seafood and shellfish from the highest quality domestic partners. We only purchase from suppliers who practice sustainable fishing methods, and all of our products are sourced as close to home as possible. Specializing in wild caught shrimp and fish, we always know where our fish comes from, and it’s always fresh, shipped in daily. Fresh, never frozen fish is delicious and easy to prepare! We offer expert tips on all types of preparations for the home cook – grilling, sautéing, baking, broiling, and frying – or you may want to try our takeout homemade signature soups, dips, spreads, sauces, quiche, seafood pies, crabcakes, and cole slaw, called the best in Knoxville. Also, don’t forget an Eva’s caramel cake; The Shrimp Dock is the exclusive distributor of this renowned delicacy, available in whole or half sizes. Not only is seafood delicious – it’s vitally beneficial to your health, according to the USDA, which recommends eating a variety of seafood at least twice a week, citing that “beef, pork, and poultry contain solid fats and are mostly devoid of nutrients, but the fat content of seafood, nuts, and seeds comes in the form of oil and is full of nutrients.” Seafood is especially beneficial for breast-feeding women; evidence indicates that eating at least 8 to 12 ounces of seafood each week during pregnancy and while breast-feeding improves babies’ eye and brain development. The Shrimp Dock also offers lunch (dine-in or take-out) Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm in addition to a Friday night fish fry at all three of our locations. Come in and enjoy a legendary shrimp, oyster, or crabcake po’ boy, all local favorites. We’re also open from noon to 3 pm on Sundays in Farragut, and beginning in February, our Alcoa store will also serve Sunday lunch. Remember, we can cater your party or event from 30 to 1,000 people; our specialty is a Cajun shrimp boil, but we are happy to customize a menu to meet your unique needs.

Milken Educator Award Recipient

T

eaching is a

challenging job, but one that Bobi King takes on proudly. Her efforts have paid off – she’s the only teacher in Tennessee selected this year for a Milken Educator Award, an honor given to exceptional teachers. Bobi was surprised with the award at a school assembly. “It was a very special day!” she said. “I was caught totally by surprise, and I consider it to be a great honor.” Bobi is in her ninth year teaching third grade at Farragut Intermediate School. She’s also a former student of the school. “I chose to enter the teaching profession because I loved my teachers and my experiences in Knox County Schools,” she said. “Teaching is a privilege, and I have wanted to be an educator for as long as I can remember.” Bobi has 20 students, to whom she teaches reading, math, grammar, writing, and social studies. “We work hard every day!” she said. “I consider it a gift to work with the children and not only teach them, but learn from them.” Bobi says she teaches because she loves children, and in light of that, all the challenges of being a teacher become easier to tackle. “No day is typical,” she said. “I enjoy thekids, learningfrommycoworkers,

challenging myself with new curriculum, meeting the individual needs of each child, and getting to know the families of my children. I consider the children to be a part of my family and we treat each other accordingly. I love working with the parents as a team to support their child’s educational needs. The parents and staff of FIS are phenomenal!” Milken Educator Awards are given to no more than 40 teachers in the United States each year. As an honoree, Bobi will be automatically enrolled into the Network of Milken Educators, where she’ll connect with fellow educators, legislators, school boards, and others shaping the future of education. She also received $25,000 as part of the honor. “Having just won the award, I am unsure what I will do with such a wonderful gift!” she said. Photographs provided by Bobi King

Business

Why 2013 May Be a Very Good Year If the fiscal cliff is averted, stocks may have all kinds of reasons to rise. Presented by Ali Swofford What if the future is more bullish than the bears assume? In addition to fiscal cliff

concerns, the market is anxious about Europe and the possibility of higher taxes on capital gains and dividends in 2013, plus surtaxes on varieties of net investment income.1 Even so, 2013 may turn out to be a good year for stocks. Our economy looks to be healing, and that may give investors more optimism.

A housing comeback appears evident.

Our economy won’t fully recover from the downturn until the housing market does. It appears that this is happening. The National Association of Realtors showed a 10.9% annual improvement in the existing homes sales, with the median sale price rising 11.1% to $178,600. The Census Bureau noted a 17.2% annual rise in new home sales.2,3,4 QE3 is open-ended. The Federal Reserve will keep buying mortgage-linked securities and will likely broaden the effort to include the purchase of Treasuries in 2013. Cheap money should be around in 2013, thanks to the Fed’s bond-buying efforts and dedication to maintaining historically low interest rates.5 Earnings could improve. The last earnings season was disappointing, but we could see gradual improvement, assuming Congress does something significant about the fiscal cliff. Citigroup sees earnings growth of 5% next year even with minor fiscal tightening.6

Consumer confidence may be translating into personal spending. In November, the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index reached a mark of 73.7; the highest level since February 2008.7

If we get a fix for the fiscal cliff, 2013 could be promising. There is a real sense that the U.S.

economy is headed for better times. Some year-end 2013 projections for the S&P are bullish: Deutsche Bank is seeing a year-end finish of 1,500, Bank of America Merrill Lynch sees the S&P reaching 1,600, and Piper Jaffray thinks it can make it up to 1,700.8 There are economists who think 2013 could be a key transitional year, a step toward a more robust economy by mid-decade. If solid economic indicators inspire companies and consumers to spend and invest more, this year might surprise even the most ardent stock market bears.

Beating the Odds Recipes from Hallelujah Acres Sweet Potato Slaw

Beating the Odds Odds are that

if you are eating a Standard American Diet, the outcome may not be the results that you are hoping for. The statistics are clear: approximately 1.5 to 2 million Americans die every year from heart attacks, cancer, and strokes. Approximately 65% of all Americans are obese, and this obesity increases the risk of illnesses and death due to diabetes, stroke, coronary artery disease, and kidney and gallbladder disorders. The more overweight the person becomes, the higher the risk. To top it off, America ranks 37th in the world, behind most industrialized nations, in terms of its citizens’ life expectancy. The U.S. life expectancy is 78.2 years, while Japan ranks highest with a life expectancy of 82.7 years. It’s safe to say that a health crisis exists in the U.S., and this health crisis is due largely to the Standard American Diet. The Standard American Diet is full of many things that have no benefit to the body. Empty calorie is the term used for foods having energy but lacking in nutritional value. Processed carbohydrates, white rice, white bread, hydrogenated fats, sugar, food additives such as MSG, and sodium nitrates all contain empty calories and lack basic essentials of vitamins and minerals. C. Everett Koop, Surgeon General during the Reagan administration, has stated, “Dietary excesses or imbalances contribute to problems such as high blood pressure, dental disease, obesity, osteoporosis, and gastrointestinal disease. Together, these

20

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2013

diet-related conditions inflict a substantial burden of illness on Americans.” Hydrogenated fats are a major concern. Just consuming a donut or small serving of French fries regularly, which is equivalent to four grams of fat, caused considerable weight gain. A recent study was done with monkeys that were fed hydrogenated oil and were not fed in excess amount to warrant any weight gain, and yet the monkeys gained weight around the belly. The problem with gaining around the waist is not just the subcutaneous fat right below the skin, but it also includes visceral fat that surrounds internal organs, which have many more dangerous health consequences. According to the Mayo Clinic, visceral fat increases blood pressure, alters the good and bad cholesterol levels, and impairs the body’s ability to utilize insulin. Excess of any fat increases estrogen levels that can lead to strokes, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. Recent research associates belly fat with premature death. The good news is that we have the power to make positive changes in our health by simply making better dietary choices, including some selections of raw vegetables that supply the necessary enzymes missing in cooked foods. Choosing a variety of colorful vegetables, replacing refined carbohydrates with whole grains, and choosing fats such as avocados and olive oil over hydrogenated ones will go a long way to recovering our health. Not only will the belly fat drop, but the incident rate of diseases will drop as well. We really will be beating the odds as the pendulum swings in our favor for a better outcome.

New Year’s Resolution #1:

Improved Oral Health

Oral surgery that’s worth smiling about!

With the arrival of 2013, Americans are busy compiling their list of New Year’s resolutions with the goal of improving their and their family’s lives. Not surprising, the large

majority of New Year’s resolutions include health and well-being resolutions designed to help us prolong our lives, lead healthier, more active lives, and enrich our personal lives. I would encourage you to consider including a resolution for the New Year to improve your oral health, which can have significant impact on your overall health. Scientific research has linked gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, preterm births, and a variety of other health related issues. Also, the same bacteria that causes tooth decay can be harmful to other areas of your body. Basically, your overall oral health can be an accurate indicator of your overall health, and poor oral health can have an adverse affect on your health. At Jordan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we work closely with your family dentist to provide you with the experienced and compassionate dental care you deserve to assure you and your family a lifetime of good oral health. Along with my nearly four decades of dental and oral surgery experience, combined with our team of caring and experienced dental health care professionals, we offer a wide variety of oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures, including: • Dental implants • Wisdom teeth • Orthognathic surgery • Facial trauma • Dental extractions • Bone grafting • Platelet rich plasma • Oral pathology • IV sedation • Pre-prosthetic surgery

If you or a family member have been postponing or are considering a necessary procedure that we perform, I would encourage you to contact one of our dental health team members for a consultation. Your oral health not only can affect your general health, but depending on the nature or specific condition, it can also affect your appearance and how you and others view you.

Scientific research has linked gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, preterm births, and a variety of other health related issues. Whatever the nature of your resolutions for 2013, be it weight loss, stopping smoking, spending more time with your family, or, hopefully, improved oral health, I would encourage you to see them through for the entire year. On behalf of all of us here at Jordan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we would like to wish you a happy and healthy New Year, and we thank you for your support and the confidence and trust you have placed in us.

Cost of Prescriptions and Doctor Visits Double in a Decade

A

ccording to

a new report from the International Federation of Health Plans, Americans can spend up to $265 for a typical family practice visit, which may exclude the costs of needed testing. Another report from the Department of Health and Human Services shows that the costs of prescriptions and doctor visits have doubled in one 10-year period. With rising health care costs, and despite the recent federal health care law called the Affordable Care Act, tens of millions of Americans still find themselves uninsured or underinsured. Sadly, many people forgo important preventative screenings and examinations that might prevent more serious and even life threatening illnesses in the future – illnesses that could potentially bankrupt an individual or a family. Thanks to a growing number of initiatives from a variety of innovative and forwardthinking health care professionals, however, there are some exciting options that offer families reliable, affordable health care alternatives. One such program, a first in Knoxville, offers individuals and families an innovative new option for family medicine and primary care. Called Southeast Retained Medical, its Medical Membership Plan is specifically designed for uninsured and underinsured individuals, families, and small businesses. Members of Southeast Retained Medical, who pay a low monthly fee often far less than most insurance plans, have access to five area primary care locations, one of which provides an extended hour, urgent care, walk-in facility. Primary and preventative care available include:

22

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2013

• Annual examinations and sports physicals • Routine primary care treatment • Wellness care • Women’s care • General pediatric/adolescent care • Chronic illness management (i.e. diabetes, hypertension, etc.) • EKG, pulmonary function, x-ray services • Same day urgent care treatment • And more! You are encouraged to visit www.seretained medical.com for a menu of services. Now you and your family can benefit from reliable, affordable health care through Southeast Retained Medical’s innovative

new Medical Membership Program, all at a low monthly fee. Again, usually far less than monthly insurance premiums. This is not an insurance plan, but as a member, you and your family can receive routine primary and preventative care from any of their member clinics, which are staffed by experienced, caring, and compassionate physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Isn’t it time that you and your family had the reliable, affordable health care you deserve? A New Year’s Wish

O

n behalf of all of us

here at Audibel Hearing Centers, we’d like to wish each of you a long, full, and prosperous life. I am amazed, as I’m sure you are as well, on the continued advances in medical science. Technology makes it possible to overcome many of the health challenges of the past that were leading causes of death or were debilitating at best. We transplant human organs, implant pacemakers and defibrillators, replace knees and hips, and the list Joe Simpson goes on. Perhaps, more importantly, we have the capacity to not only extend our life expectancies, but also enhance our quality of life.

Today’s grandparents live lives much different than their grandparents. We travel more, we participate in many more physically oriented activities that seem to have added people in their 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, just a generation or more ago. One challenge of longevity, however, is that a growing number of people are experiencing hearing related problems that may have passed almost unnoticed in the past, simply because we weren’t living as long. Our grandparents, who may appear to have enjoyed near normal hearing, might likely have experienced hearing related problems had they been fortunate enough to live an additional 10, 15, or 20 years or more as today’s seniors. Fortunately, the same advances in medical technology responsible for extending our lives also enable most of us to hear at near normal levels for the remainder of our lives. That means we can continue to enjoy personal and meaningful relationships with our life-long friends, neighbors, spouse, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. These technological advances have made hearing aids smaller and almost undetectable.

The same advances in medical technology responsible for extending our lives also enable most of us to hear at near normal levels for the remainder of our lives. These same strides have also made today’s new digitally driven hearing aids smarter – smart enough to program out distractions in a noisy restaurant while you enjoy an intimate conversation with a loved one. Each of us has been blessed with the promise of a long, full, and prosperous life. Yesterday’s seniors are today’s middle-aged. Don’t let anything hold you back from enjoying life to its fullest, and that includes your hearing. For a free, no obligation evaluation and consultation, call me today. Smell the roses, but don’t ignore the singing of the birds.

Taking Time for Fitness This Winter January is the month for New Year’s resolutions, and many people look to the winter season as the perfect time to get in shape and back into the right wellness regime. There is no better time than now to get started. All it takes is a simple commitment to better living. Check out these simple steps for getting the most out of your workout: Fuel up:

Nutrition is an important part of any workout. In order to have ample energy, consume a small meal, such as two daily servings of fruits or vegetables, at least 90 minutes before you train. Also, make sure to eat a high-protein snack within 30 minutes following your exercise to refuel and rebuild.

26

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2013

Take time to recover: Reward

yourself after an intense fitness session by enjoying a massage once every two weeks. Not only will you feel great, but it will reduce lactic acid build up and increase blood flow. Your mind and body will thank you.

Stay fresh: Crunched for time? If you don’t have time to hit the showers right after a workout, there are some easy ways to freshen up for your trek home or next stop. Keep a small bag of travel-sized toiletries in your gym bag with essentials like a toothbrush and an extra stick of deodorant. Equip yourself:

If you are starting a new program, sometimes a new pair of shoes or a new playlist can provide the right motivation. Your old gear might be worn out and not up to the task. Proper training equipment can make or break your workout routine; it’s not just about fashion.

Mix it up: Switching up your fitness routine is a great way to maximize your workout and stay motivated. For example, combine resistance training with cardio and mix up the order week by week. Start by doing resistance training before your cardio for one week, then switch it up, doing cardio first followed by resistance training. Follow this pattern week by week for at least four weeks, and your body will respond to the change-up.

Best Wishes for a Healthy New Year from Our Family to Yours

Become What You Drink in the New Year Like most other moms and dads, my husband, David, and I engage in the centuries-old tradition of making resolutions every New Year, and 2013 will be no exception. New Year’s Eve is a time for personal and family reflection, but, more importantly, it is also a time to reflect on changes we commit to make in the New Year to overcome past challenges or to enhance our and our family’s lives. Not surprisingly, more than half of New Year’s resolutions involve our health and well-being. A past resolution our family recommits to annually and I’d recommend you to consider is eating and drinking more healthy foods and beverages. Few foods and beverages are more essential than water. Safe drinking water is essential for both survival and longevity of humans. While access to safe drinking water has grown during the decades, there remains a concern on the safety of drinking water that contains a variety of substances, including toxins, pollutants, and microbes. A variety of government and environmental agencies routinely test our drinking water supplies for safety, but that doesn’t mean the water your family drinks is devoid of these potentially harmful substances. What it does mean is that the level of harmful substances is below a certain threshold and is deemed to be safe. However, there is growing social concern over the longterm effects of ingesting lower, and presumed safe, levels of known toxins, pollutants, and microbes. The solution couldn’t be simpler. Many of you know David and me as owners of Aqua Clear Water Systems. Aqua Clear is more than a family business to us. It’s our commitment to helping moms and dads like you provide their families with an endless supply of clear, pure drinking water designed to enhance the quality of your family’s health. As humans, we also ingest water and potentially harmful substances through our skin. Pure water from Aqua Clear offers a variety of other benefits such as reduction or elimination of dry skin, including eczema, and can enhance the condition of your hair. If the safety and quality of your family’s drinking water is a priority to you, and I know it is, why not make a New Year’s resolution for 2013 and permit us to conduct a no cost, no obligation, in-home test of your home’s drinking water? opening of The Mansion Restaurant located on the second level of the allnew Sweetwater Flower Shop took place in early December. “Not unlike any major undertaking of this nature, there has been a variety of unexpected delays and a few surprises,” said Jack Wilson, owner of Sweetwater Flower Shop. “But I think you will agree that it will have been worth the wait.” “Our goal of our December soft opening was to train staff, acclimate ourselves to our new kitchen, and refine our new menu,” stated Chef Lea Watson. “So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The Mansion menu items include:

• Blackened Chicken Salad • Apple, Walnut, Cranberry Salad • Roasted Pear Salad • Fried Green Tomato BLT • Waldorf Sandwich • Veggie Wrap • Turkey Panini with Blue Cheese & Cranberry Chutney “The Mansion’s menu will vary most months and, of course, will feature seasonal favorites,” offered Chef Lea. “Our goal is to offer patrons a fresh, exciting, and varied menu that features both a southern theme and healthy options.” The Mansion Restaurant will also be available to host special events, including weddings in a chapel-like setting incorporated within the restaurant itself. The restaurant also offers a small and intimate dining room that can seat up to eight guests. It’s perfect for an intimate engagement or anniversary celebration or even an informal business meeting. The Mansion will also be hosting special evening events such as Valentine’s Day. This Valentine’s Day, The Mansion invites you and your sweetheart to enjoy a romantic dinner away from home in its elegant dining room. Dining will be by reservation only. You can select your preferences from their special Valentine’sinspired menu, and you can also request fresh flowers for your valentine. You can choose from two seatings and are encouraged to call for reservations and details. Everybody at the Sweetwater Flower Shop and The Mansion Restaurant wish you a prosperous New Year and invite you to come and visit historic downtown Sweetwater and all it has to offer.

a n u a r y is

a great time to reassess your winter wardrobe. There is finally time to go through all of the pieces hanging in your closet that haven’t been worn yet this year and either donate them or take them to your nearest consignment shop. Whichever you choose, you’ve begun the process of updating your own winter wardrobe while selections are still great and on sale! At The Lily Pad, our sales are huge semi-annual events which take place in January and July. Our winter merchandise is now 25% off, and on Saturday, January 19th at 10:00 am, every piece that’s left goes to 50% off! We’ve found this method to be quite effective to not only clear out the store, but also to pass tremendous savings on to our customers.

Please send your email address to LilyPad Boutique@bellsouth.net and we will be happy to advise you of our sales and special events!

The Lily Pad – The Gathering Place...Come With Friends or Make New Ones Here! As the winter merchandise goes on sale, our “La Sale Boutique” (the big room in the rear of the store) goes to 70% off! Thus, the clearing out begins as we ready ourselves and the store for a brand new season! Spring fashions have been ordered, new, fresh looks are arriving and the holiday

decorations have been put away for another year. We’ll look forward to seeing so many of our customers and friends during our unbelievable sale days. If you’ve ever spent a day at Filene’s Basement in Boston, The Lily Pad is almost as wild on the first days of our sale! Plan to spend some

time with us as you visit with friends and neighbors, every arm loaded with bargains and having the time of our lives! What a fun day during a not-so-fun month… it’s a social event you won’t want to miss! At The Lily Pad, we reflect on how blessed we have been this year to again be a part of your lives. We truly appreciate the vote of confidence you place in us to be your fashion headquarters! Our most sincere wishes from the entire Lily Pad staff for a happy and healthy 2013!

Kin Lore Guides Us

A

t New Year’s, we reflect on the past and dream of the future. Every year has its ups and downs. For us, 2012 was both rewarding and sad. After five years, we moved into our new home in June, but we also lost JeanAnn’s only brother. We now have another angel to help shepherd us. Yore, wisdom, and belief led us. As a farm family, animal husbandry has been a part of our lifework. JeanAnn’s brother was a great teacher, and his insight will be missed. A past lesson learned, all seasons bring special issues for animals, and winter temperature fluctuations can be especially challenging. Here are a few tips for canine care: » Keep dogs warm and dry. Provide extra blankets and pads on hard surface floors. Prevent frostbite on ears, tails, and feet by reducing time outside.

» After walks rinse and dry dog’s feet. Salt used to melt ice can irritate feet

pads. Use a little petroleum jelly to soften the pads of feet and prevent tiny cuts and cracks

from developing.

» Groom properly.

Short or course haired dogs may get extra cold, so don’t have the coat cut too short. Towel dry immediately if dog gets wet and dry feet thoroughly. Longhaired dogs should have excess hair around toes and footpads trimmed to keep feet clean and dry. Consult with John, our groomer, regarding other winter weather tips. At this time of reflection, we thank you for your continued support and encouragement and wish you a happy, prosperous New Year. We look forward to continuing to serve your four-legged kids with pampering and love.

New Year’s Resolutions ew Year’s resolutions aren’t something new; in fact, they go back more than two thousand years to ancient Rome. The key figure in ancient Roman New Year’s resolutions was the God Janus, which is where we get the word January. For those of you who don’t know, Janus has one head but two faces, one in front and the other in back. Although there are many legends for the two faces, the ancient Romans believed that Janus could look back at the past and ahead to the future at the same time. This ability made Janus the ideal patron for New Year’s resolutions. Through history into the present, New Year’s has meant the same for most of us. New Year’s Day is a time to put the

old year behind us and start out fresh, with a new beginning. So, we know we are supposed to make them, and most of us do. Resolutions bring us focus, hope, and can also inspire action. What resolutions do you have for 2013? For the “lighter side” of life, let’s think about our fashion resolutions…. 10. Clean out your closet so your clothes actually need a hangar to suspend in your closet. 9. Never again buy something you think you might fit into when you lose those 10 pounds. (You know, the resolution that is on the top of your list.) 8. Stop spending big money on impulse buys. Just because it looks good on the mannequin does not mean it will look good on you.

Let Them Eat Cake! Candace knew she wasn’t going to celebrate Addison’s second birthday with just any run of the mill birthday cake.

I

n fact, she knew exactly what

she wanted: a two-tiered farmthemed cake complete with a barn, some animals, and a sweet little picket fence. But now came the tough part… who could make this cake she had dreamed up? This style of cake is plastered on every mother’s Pinterest board, but was there a bakery in Knoxville that she could count on? That’s when she found The Sweetery, a new bakery in the Lakeside Village shops located on Northshore Drive next to the Northshore Brasserie.

“Candace is like many of the customers we have had walk through our doors since we opened in late June,” says Bettina McCann, co-owner of The Sweetery. “She has style, great taste, and wants a customized cake that will make her child feel special!” The Sweetery offers all kinds of confections that will transform your ordinary event into an extraordinary occasion that family and friends will be talking about for a long time. Cheryl McMillan, co-owner and cake designer at The Sweetery, says, “Sometimes our clients know exactly what they want, and other times we have the opportunity to create a concept for them. Whether you want a fondant-covered masterpiece or just a simple cake topped with ‘Happy Birthday,’ a cake can really let someone know you care.” The Sweetery boutique bakery is happy to produce flavored cakes, buttercreams,

7. Forget the Internet for clothing purchases unless you have a proven record for fit and quality with the supplier. Returns can be a hassle. 6. Embrace color! Do you actually need another black top in your wardrobe? 5. Take stock of your current wardrobe and fill in where you need it most. 4. Budget for a clothing allowance and try to stick to it. 3. Open up to new style ideas with a retailer you trust. 2. Consign your (current) misfit clothes or donate older clothing to the charity of your choice. 1. Embrace “green,” make your money count, and shop and consign at Next To New! Happy New Year!

or almost any concoction you can imagine. The following is a menu of specialty cakes designed to inspire your taste buds: • Classic cakes with buttercream (white, yellow, vanilla, chocolate) • Deluxe cakes with cream cheese buttercream (strawberry, carrot, red velvet, Italian cream) • Signature cakes (hot chocolate, citrus rum) • Special buttercream cakes (caramel, peanut butter, lemon, strawberry, raspberry, pistachio, almond, chocolate ganache) Not your typical big-box food store bakery, Cheryl and Bettina invite you to their boutique bakery to discover first-hand what can transform a so-so event into a truly memorable occasion.

Non-Invasive Surgery for Your Home There are a lot of reasons that our community is experiencing a remodeling boom. Past economic uncertainty has caused many homeowners to postpone or eliminate their plans to purchase a new home. That has resulted in many of us electing to remodel our existing homes and stay in them a little longer. In most cases, this is a financially wise decision, because remodeling can offer the greatest return on investment in the current economic conditions. This is especially true in kitchen and bathroom remodeleing. Fixing up to sell is being replaced with fixing up to stay. Not all remodeling projects you select are created equal. Take your kitchen and baths, two popular home remodeling projects today. Most complete kitchen and bath remodeling projects, like surgery, can be highly invasive and, like invasive surgery, can require much time to recover from and can be emotionaly painful. These projects typically require weeks or even months to complete. That means contractors and subcontractors are at your door daily and demolition, dust, dirt, and debris. It also means that you put your life on hold. That means you can’t cook your meals at home or the entire family is sharing the guest bath. But, like invasive surgery, there may be a less invasive alternative. Let’s look at your kitchen countertops. If they are worn and dated, why replace them? Why not consider refacing with a quality Granite Transformations granite countertop that fits over your existing countertops? If your existing countertops are sound, why would you choose to go through the hassle of demolition? The real questions is, “Why wouldn’t 38

you choose to eliminate lengthy demolition and loss of use of your kitchen, when there is a premium granite product that requires no demolition, no maintenance ever, and in most cases can be completed in just one day?” You not only reap those benefits, but you also get the finest granite countertops made. They are certified safe for food prep, Certified Green, and backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Our countertops never need to be sealed in order to be safe. The same is true of your kitchen and bathroom cabinets. If your existing cabinets are sound, why not resurface them to achieve that showplace quality look you have dreamed about? Our product and process for cabinet refacing is also Certified Green. Seems like a no brainer to me. Discover what thousands of satisfied homeowners in East Tennessee have already discovered: that you can begin enjoying your new kitchen or bath in days, not weeks or

months. No demolition, no weeks without your kitchen or bath, or endless procession of workmen… just professional looking results in days, not weeks, done by our certified installers. It’s as simple as that. We are a very friendly, family owned and operated business that truly cares about your remodeling experience. That is why we are proud to be rated A+ by the BBB and have been complaint free since we opened seven years ago. To learn more, or for your free, no obligation, in-home consultation, call today.

Travel: What’s Hot in 2013 There are two kinds of travelers out

there: those who plan and those who wing it. But what they have in common is a love of travel and exploring new destinations. Whether you take two-day weekend trips or 10-day vacations, here are some must-see destinations that travel-inspiration site Away. com selected for 2013.

Four-day vacation: Finger Lakes, NY

If visiting wine country is on your bucket list, you might think a trip to California is your only domestic option. But if you want to skip the massive crowds of Napa or happen to live closer to the east coast, the Finger Lakes region in New York State is the place to go. The area is the largest wine producer east of California, yielding more than 40,000 tons of grapes a year. Not only is wine a highlight, there are two newly created self-guided trails that highlight cheese and sweets. The two trails feature around 15 artisan cheese makers and sweet creators. Once you’re full, check out the 87-mile Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway and the Corning Museum of Glass, home to the largest glass collection in the world.

Three- to seven-day vacation: Mississippi River steamboat cruise

In 2012, the American Queen Steamboat Company started running the largest steamboat ever built up the Mississippi River. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you rediscover the history and beauty of America’s heartland. Shore excursions at destinations such as New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis, and Minneapolis are included, depending on which cruise you take, and the dining, headed by famed American chef Regina Charboneau, focuses on regional favorites.

Seven-day vacation: England

Now that the London Summer Olympics have passed, 2013 is the perfect year to visit England. The permanent venues like the aquatics center and stadium, along with the Olympic park, are being converted for public use and will open as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park by mid-summer. Olympic Village, the former athlete basecamp, was converted into an apartment and condo complex, which is now called East Village. But don’t spend all your time looking at Olympic

venues. London, and England as a whole, is famous for so much more, such as literature, history, architecture, and even fish and chips.

10-Day vacation: Alaska Marine Highway System

Alaska stretches out over 656,000 square miles of space, so exploring the state is a once-in-alifetime trip. In 2013, Alaska’s Marine Highway celebrates its founding 50 years ago. Today, 11 ferries travel more than 3,500 miles on the “marine highway” between Washington State and Alaska’s Aleutian islands. Visitors who take this route will come away with a deep understanding of Alaska’s diverse and scenic coastline and communities.

A Breath of Fresh Air

You might not be aware of this fact, but six out of the top 10 resolutions made each New Year involve health and well-being. Keep the tradition alive this New Year with a renewed commitment to your family’s health by committing to improve the quality of air in your home that you and your loved ones breathe every day.

America’s No.1 Air Duct Cleaner Good Medicine for the Air You Breathe

Is your home’s indoor air quality a potential

health hazard? If your home is like other homes, its heating and cooling system is comprised of hundreds of feet of air ducts where debris has accumulated throughout the years, including dust and debris that’s been trapped within your system since your home was originally constructed. Throughout the years, additional dust, dirt, and pollen has accumulated in your home’s HVAC system and duct work, which is recirculated throughout your entire home every time your heating and cooling system cycles. That means dust is recirculated, pollen worsens conditions for allergy sufferers, and accumulated debris, dust, and dirt reduce the efficiency of your home’s HVAC system. No amount of vacuuming can overcome this dilemma. There’s only one proven solution: Duct Doctor of Knoxville, the nation’s first choice for home air duct and HVAC system cleaning. Their powerful, patented, truck-mounted vacuum system and motorized duct cleaning tools loosen accumulated debris, dirt, dust, and pollen. Loosened dirt and debris is then safely vacuumed into Duct Doctor’s vacuum system, reducing indoor allergens by up to 90%, leaving your home’s air ducts and HVAC system clean. That means greater heating and cooling efficiency and lower energy costs. It also means that you’ll dust less, sneeze less, and you’ll enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing your family is breathing the freshest air possible inside your home. That’s right. For less than you might imagine, you can virtually eliminate the dust, dirt, pollen, and debris that’s contaminating your home’s air that you and your family must breathe. Improve your indoor air quality, reduce energy costs, and extend the life of your home’s HVAC system by having your home’s hundreds of feet of air ducts and heating and cooling system cleaned by the professionals at Duct Doctor of Knoxville, chosen by more homeowners nationally than any other duct cleaning service. Call Duct Doctor today for a breath of fresh air.

Your home’s roof is its first line of defense against the searing sun, rain, wind, hail, ice, and snow. It’s exposed to more potentially damaging elements than nearly any other area of your home’s exterior. For this reason, the best way to protect your home is to keep your roof in good, sound condition at all times. Make a point of visually inspecting your home’s roof periodically. If you observe something that’s questionable, it’s best to contact a licensed roofing contractor who can make a thorough evaluation of your roof. A trained professional will evaluate the following areas: • Roof structure • Existing roof materials • Roof flashings • Roof valleys • Vent pipes • Loose or rusting fasteners They will also check for leaks that may be occurring inside your attic. The best time to take corrective action is at the first sign of a problem, before it becomes an even bigger problem that’s more expensive to repair and might damage your home’s interior. The best way to avoid future problems is to have your home roofed or re-roofed correctly the first time. Unfortunately, many problems homeowners experience are a direct result of poor materials and workmanship. Sadly, it’s not always easy to tell the difference between a roof that’s been installed properly and one that’s been installed poorly. The best way to avoid problems is to select an experienced and qualified, licensed, and insured roofing contractor. Request references and check them. Contact the Better Business Bureau as well. As owner of All Dry Roofing, I personally meet with every homeowner. I conduct a thorough evaluation of your home’s roof and make recommendations and discuss possible alternatives. At All Dry Roofing, every roof we install is not only backed up by a guarantee, but all work is performed in a manner to ensure the roofing manufacturer’s warranty isn’t voided by failure to adhere to required specifications. We also protect your home by using roofing materials such as ice and water barriers and lifetime warrantied roof vent boots at no additional charge. These added safeguards are standard features we provide at no added cost, unlike many competitors who provide them as expensive upgrades. Whether your home needs a repair or a new roof, I invite you to call me and discover the All Dry Roofing experience: roofs done right the first time.

Quick and Easy Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Appliances It’s the start of the new year and your appliances have just been through two of the biggest cooking holidays, so now’s the time to take care of them. Maintaining your appliances is necessary to prolong their life as well as keep them in good working condition. Here are a few maintenance tips to help get you started.

From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time. This revival, based on Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction, remains as powerful, poignant, and timely as ever. pies, casseroles, and turkey, your oven is probably in desperate need of a good cleaning. The self-cleaning cycle on an oven can be a lifesaver. The cycle raises the temperature in your oven to about 900 degrees, so it burns off anything that spilled while you were baking. If you don’t have a self-cleaning oven, you can clean your oven when it’s cold by placing a bowl of ammonia on the top rack and a bowl of boiling water on the bottom. Leave it overnight and wipe the oven clean in the morning. Dishwashers can get rust stains and mineral buildup or have a foul odor, so it’s important to maintain them. If you have rust stains in your dishwasher, you can put citric acid, such as Orange Tang, in the soap dispenser and then run a cycle. Running a cycle with a bowl of three cups of vinegar on the bottom rack can get rid of mineral buildup. Sometimes food trapped in the bottom filter causes odor. If this is the case, you can put a cup of baking soda in the dishwasher and run a rinse cycle. The washing machine is another appliance that needs to be cleaned regularly. Running a cycle with a cup of bleach and no clothes will clean the drums and eliminate any musty odors. It’s important to leave the door open after you run a load, so it can completely dry out. If you have a front-loading washer, wipe the door seal and glass with a dry cloth after you finish your laundry. Cleaning and maintaining your appliances make take a little time, but will add years to the life of your appliances, making it completely worth it. For a complete care and maintenance checklist, check out the Friedman’s blog at friedmansideasandinnovations.com.

Blessings in Disguise I wanted to write an eloquent article about thankfulness in November. Sure, it would take more fingers than I have to list the blessings God has blessed us with, but to be honest, I didn’t feel very thankful. As I tried to write that article, it felt forced and fake. So I gave up and wrote something about preparing your home for football parties instead! Recently I ran into an old friend I hadn’t spoken to in more than a year. As we recounted our lives to one another, I was overwhelmed by the change in my perspective. Last year brought our Aspergers son leaps and bounds in his social abilities and awareness. It provided a wonderful year for the business. It also brought me cancer. As a result, I lost a vocal cord. Normally a talkative “live out loud” kind of girl, I found myself without a voice. I love to share my life with those I love. With only a whisper, I withdrew from my friends and reserved my weak voice for important moments with my family. Last year also brought our family a crisis,

which brought us to our knees in desperation. As a family we have prayed fervently every night for several years about a particular situation. As we prepared ourselves for the worst, we stayed outwardly optimistic for the sake of the younger kids. It became impossible to imagine a good ending. We had to force ourselves to concentrate on one day at a time to preserve our sanity. We are hopeful that surgery this month

will bring my voice back. In my relative “silence” the past eight months, I have been a student of “listening.” I am thankful to know my children and my husband at a deeper level. I am thankful that I have been forced to react without yelling or lecturing. As for the family crisis we have been weathering? I believe that my silence has created the opportunity for God to speak and be heard. For the first time, our family has real hope in this desperate situation. It’s not the way we planned it or could have imagined it, but we are truly thankful for the good times and the bad of 2012. I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest blessings don’t start out that way. I hope to remember in 2013 that ALL things are possible through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Surface Doc wishes you and yours a truly blessed New Year.

January in the Garden It’s time to bid farewell to 2012 and move on into 2013. I won’t miss the past year, but I’m looking toward the New Year with both anticipation and dread. This is going to be a year of changes for me, and I’m not as adaptable to change as I’d like to be. I have a milestone birthday coming up, my eldest will graduate college, and I’ll join the ranks of the other “empty-nesters” out there as my “baby” graduates high school. I know Rodney and I will be able to do more things, the bills will be lower (except we will still have three college students), and this is the natural progression of things, but it’s still going to be an adjustment. That was my whine for the day, so now we can talk about gardening. Be forewarned, however: I may be nutty as a fruitcake by May. I’ll try to get as much information out in the next couple of months as possible, so if I’m writing gibberish by the end of spring, you’ll still have things to do.

›› Priority one topic is water! It has been a very dry fall and early winter. If you haven’t been watering newly planted (this year) shrubs and trees, you may lose them. I’ve been watering shrubs I planted in the fall every week or two since October. ›› Houseplants are the

next topic. How are yours doing? If they spent last summer outside, they may have had a temper tantrum when you brought them in. Shorter days and the lower humidity of interior air don’t make some plants happy. Try a sunny spot and a tray of water nearby. They also like humidifiers. If they’ve gotten dusty, give them a quick sponge bath or put small ones in the sink and rinse them off. This advice doesn’t apply to African violets! Dust them off with a soft paintbrush.

›› If you don’t have any houseplants because you kill them all, you may want

to try some of the succulents we have gotten in. They are very popular now, because they are so cute and easy to grow. Basically, they thrive on benign neglect. I like them, because my cats don’t eat them, but they also make a really attractive container.

›› Winter is the season for planning. Take advantage of boring afternoons and look through magazines, seed catalogs, and gardening journals to start planning what you want to do this year in your yard. Is it time for a new flower bed, a remake of an existing bed, or a start-all-over again project? ›› Seeds can be started indoors for annuals, perennials, and herbs. This is a really cool project to get children and/or grandchildren involved in. All you really need is soil, pots, seeds, and a sunny window or light source. Ah, the miracle of nature! ›› You can also clean, sharpen, and oil your tools on gloomy days. Or, you can go shopping for new tools to replace worn out or lost tools! ›› If the weather is nice and you want to get outside, check out the weed situation. It’s amazing how fast chickweed, henbit, and wild onions can take over a bed. Weeding is also a good antidote for cabin fever. Remember, herbicides don’t work when it’s cold, so you have to do it by hand. ›› You can still plant pansies to perk up a gloomy landscape. If you don’t have a flower bed, a pot of pansies on your porch or beside your doorway adds a little cheer.

›› For those of you who have been chomping at the bit to prune something, go ahead and do your summer bloomers such as roses, crepe myrtles, and butterfly bushes now. Make sure your pruners are sharp so you don’t tear the branches. Remember that you can always take off a little more, but you cannot put any back on, so go slowly! Do not prune spring bloomers or hydrangeas. If you have a question about a plant, please call before you start whacking. ›› Don’t forget the birds. Keep feeders clean and full with a good quality seed, and provide a birdbath if you are able. The bath will need to be cleaned and refilled weekly, and the feeder may have to be refilled daily. That’s all I have for this month. Don’t forget that we’ll be here all winter to answer your questions and help you plan your perfect spring garden. Happy New Year! Many plants in our gardens remain unnoticed most of the year. They seem to sit helplessly as green blobs in the landscape; however, when it’s their time to shine, they really pull out all the stops.

S

uch is the case

with Euonymus americanus, commonly known in some parts of the country as strawberry bush. In this part of the world, this euonymus is also known by the more down-home name, “Hearts-a-Bustin.” It’s so named for the plant’s unique four-lobed seed capsules, which open in September and early October to reveal a fiery-red collection of dangling seeds from its interior. These seeds can persist late into the year and add splashes of red to the late-season landscape. Strawberry bush is a sprawling, multistemmed shrub that grows from four feet to six feet high. As the plant matures, it becomes more erect and stems become thicker and more heavily branched. It has a lazy appearance and would be best left to its own imperfections in a woodland or naturalized garden. Native to the eastern United States,

strawberry bush grows from zones 6 to 9 and prefers slightly acidic, shady sites. If it is planted in a sunnier spot, make sure it is mulched and watered well. This plant can also handle somewhat drier, understory shady situations. Flowers appear in spring and are greenish-white and fairly inconspicuous. Deer have been known to graze on this plant and seem to love the tender leaves and stems. Humans should take the red color of the seeds as a warning; they are known to be a strong laxative and cause severe diarrhea. In fact, this genus of plants in general is considered poisonous to humans. Strawberry bush is prone to euonymus scale and crown gall. However, these problems are minor when compared with the susceptibility of other landscape euonymus like burning bush (E. alatus) or wintercreeper euonymus (E. fortunei). With proper placement and care, Euonymus americanus is sure to add seasonal interest to the woodland garden during the winter.

Just about any room in your home can be transformed from ordinary to extraordinary with beautifully hand-crafted ceramic tile that has been inspired by combining the skills of many generations of artisans from around the world. Or, perhaps you prefer the richness and natural beauty of granite, marble, or stone, which has been designed by nature many hundreds of feet beneath the earth’s surface for a millennia. Your choices are innumerable and your decisions overwhelming when you are confronted with the countless options and alternatives that exist. But, the solution is easier than you might have imagined: Exact Tile, Inc. of Knoxville. If you’re looking for a big-box store with pallets of generic ceramic, granite, marble, and stone and subcontractor installation prices that are double Exact Tile’s prices, you’ll be disappointed. Plus, there are many projects in your home that the big-box stores won’t tackle, including shower floors and surrounds.

by some in the past, homeowners and renters alike are now flocking to high-end consignment furniture galleries like Knoxville’s own Consign to Design. “I think consignment furniture is an idea whose time has arrived,” says Consign to Design co-owner, Kristi Hickey. “Spurred on by our challenging economy, consignment furniture has grown enormously during the last few years.” What seems to shock customers the most is both the quality and selection available at Consign to Design. Expect to find brand names on many items at up to 80% off. Most of the gently-used furniture, home décor, and art items are as nice-as-new. Actually, you will discover that most of the furniture at Consign to Design is equal in both quality and condition to the furniture in your own home, and you wouldn’t discard an item simply because it was two or three years old! Looked at another way, every piece of furniture in your home, although purchased new, is now used and worth far less today than what you originally paid. “Much of what we have on display is from highend communities,” offered David Hickey, Kristi’s spouse and co-owner. “People move, downsize, and redecorate, all of which creates an abundance of high-quality furniture and accessories that are looking for a new home, and at just a fraction of their

original retail cost.” A perfect example is the Stickley sectional shown in this article. Just a few years old, and in excellent condition, this sectional now sells at about half of its original price. What would you do with the money you could save on quality, nice-as-new furniture? post office in a building next to the house for many years. James’ unmarried great granddaughter, Lilly, was the last Kelly resident, outliving her four unmarried sisters and brother. She died in her 90s in 1984 after a lifetime of sharing her memories and stories about the home’s history. Related McCartt family members owned and cared for the property thereafter. Here are just a few of the Kelly family’s memories from various sources relating to the Civil War:

Earliest Saddlebag Log Home in Area to Be Saved

T

he opportunity to document and interpret the North Cumberland Plateau’s first white settlement through early 19th century historic buildings is rare to non-existent. That’s why the nearly 200-year-old Stonecipher/Kelly/ McCartt log house and its surrounding land in Morgan County is so important. Today its current owners are working with this writer and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance to carry out security measures at the house and achieve state ownership for eventual public use. Virtually all the home’s original interior and exterior material is intact, protected by many layers of later materials applied by the three interrelated families who owned and lived in it. While much is known about this unique historic house still standing between Wartburg and Oliver Springs, much more remains to be learned through genealogical and archival records, interviews with family descendants, and on-site research and assessment. Many of today’s descendants of all three families are eager to share their knowledge and family records and see the home and land preserved. Along with the Samuel Hall family, Joseph Marion Stonecipher (originally Steinseiffer) and his sons were the first permanent white

60

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2013

settlers around 1807/08 into the wilderness that is now Morgan County. They came from the northwest corner of North Carolina. The Stoneciphers settled various tracts of a Revolutionary War land grant in the beautiful Emory River valley and its tributaries. By 1814, one of the sons, Ezra B. Stonecipher, had constructed an unusually large two-story log home with a third level loft on a portion of the land grant adjacent to today’s Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area. It was built in the saddlebag style, with a massive cut stone chimney in the center of the house and two-story “pens” on each side. Early census records list Ezra as a gunsmith and furniture maker, which helps explain the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail still evident in the home today. The first floor logs are hand-hewn white oak. Lighter weight poplar logs were used for second floor walls. Half-dovetail notching was employed to join the corners, a common German building method. The floors on all three levels are wide heart pine boards. Finishing methods unusual for early log homes include beaded wall paneling and rafters, with wooden pegging throughout. All the boards are hand planed and some chamfered. Sometime in the decade after the home was built, James Martin Kelly became the owner. Several intermarriages link the Stonecipher and Kelly family, and it was four generations of Kellys who lived in the home for the next 160+ years. They operated a general store and

Stonecipher/Kelly/McCartt house with Frozen Head and Kelly Mountain in the background

“There’s a storage room on the second floor behind the chimney where valuables were hidden from the soldiers during the Civil War.” “Lilly’s grandfather, Daniel Kelly, escaped from a Union prison in Kentucky and walked all the way home.” “Grandmother Julia Stonecipher, a tiny little woman, knocked her churn from the hands of a soldier who had snatched it.” “When James Martin Kelly was killed by bushwhackers near Knoxville, his wife, Malinda Hall Kelly, rode her horse through the Union lines to her husband’s grave.” James Martin’s wife and daughter are buried on a slope in the back of the house, their gravestones’ engraving still legible today. Daughter Cloey Arminda died in 1843 at the age of 15. Malinda Hall Kelly died in 1872 at age 64. If preservation and protection efforts are successful, the Stonecipher/Kelly/ McCartt family home will someday share its two centuries of North Cumberland Plateau history.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. 2013 King Week The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission Announces Schedule of Events and Theme BEGINNING JANUARY 16

ince 1982, the MLK Commission has been organizing a special celebration each year for the Knoxville area to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The weeklong celebration focuses on providing education and leadership training for adults and youth and promotes reconciliation through peaceful conflict resolution. Part of the celebration also includes stories of racial struggles with emphasis on non-violence, equality, and love. This year’s celebration will take on a special emphasis of education and will embody the theme of “Intelligence plus Character.” The guiding light for 2013 will be Sarah Moore Greene, Knoxville’s leader in the civil rights movement and in the education of all children. Ms. Greene passed away August 15 at the age of 92, but her spirit and legacy will be the stimulus for this year’s celebration. The celebration will begin with an opening prayer service that brings together people of all denominations. That program will be held at the First Christian Church at noon on Wednesday, January 16. The events the rest of the week will include the annual Leadership Awards Luncheon, a community forum hosted by OREPA, special training sessions for area teachers and youth, and a leadership educational symposium open for everyone. Three of the celebration events emphasize the arts. The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra will perform a MLK tribute concert on the MLK Holiday, January 21; other singers, dancers, and actors will present a special “night with the arts” program at Knoxville College; and 14 Knox County art teachers will organize a display of original art in the Gallery of the Bijou Theatre emphasizing the life of Dr. King. A highlight of the celebration will be the annual MLK Memorial Parade followed by the MLK Memorial Tribute Service. For more information, visit www.MLK Knoxville.org.

Buying and Selling a Home During the Off Season While cold weather causes many people to stay snug and cozy indoors, it provides a great opportunity for homebuyers to get out and find their dream home. Fall and winter are typically considered the off season in the housing market, but actually, buyers can potentially find better deals, and sellers may find the most serious buyer. To take advantage of the benefits of off season real estate, consider these important areas of advice. Use strategic elements of the season

The off season is a great time to buy, because you’ll have less competition with other buyers and a reduced chance of getting in a bidding war that drives up a home’s price, something that still occurs frequently. When you’re not fighting with other bidders, you can make a sound decision and have a better chance of getting the seller to pitch in on concessions, such as closing costs or funds for improvements like appliance upgrades.

Prepare yourself from the start

Today’s unique real estate market can be confusing for even the savviest folks. That’s why it’s important to work with a real estate agent who can answer all your questions. Not all real estate agents have the same

66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2013

training and experience, so find one who has the background necessary to navigate complex situations.

Look beyond the first impression

During the off season, it might be easy to overlook subtle home issues. Outside leaves pile up, snow drifts form, and they may cover up problems with the siding, foundation, or landscaping. A home that is currently vacant may have internal issues due to freezing temperatures. Empty houses are typically heated less, and some, unfortunately, not at all. If a house you’re interested in is vacant, make sure that it has been properly winterized or maintained so you can be confident there are no issues with frozen pipes or a malfunctioning furnace. Always get a professional home inspection before making a purchase.

Strategic points for sellers

For sellers, the off season doesn’t have to be a detriment to making a sale. Remember, staging your home so it looks organized, stylish, and modern is a smart move. Take cues from the season in your décor choices, creating a clean yet homey feeling that will help potential buyers visualize their future in the space. Also, remember potential buyers may want to drive by your home before they schedule an official showing. With fewer daylight hours, it’s important to keep lights on in the evening, so if they drive by, your home isn’t completely dark. The off season means opportunity for both homebuyers and sellers. By acting now, you might be able to get an incredible deal on your dream home or sell your property in record time.

Clinton Glass SUCCESS

As a business owner I receive calls every day from advertising reps asking me to spend money with them. Whether it’s print, radio or television, they all suggest that their advertising method is the best way to get my message out to potential clients. They have a high hill to climb, because Everything Knoxville already does a great job of finding potential customers for us. Everything Knoxville puts out a quality monthly publication that is mailed directly to homeowners. That means my customers pull the magazine directly out of their mailbox, making it more likely for them to read. We track our client phone calls from several advertising sources, and Everything Knoxville does better dollar for dollar than any other publication I’ve advertised in. Thanks Judy and Tom!

Lea Watson’s true passion is food, and she’s excited to open her newest endeavor in East Tennessee. She’s the owner and chef of The Mansion Restaurant, which opened at the beginning of December upstairs in the newly renovated Sweetwater Flower Shop. “I am so excited about this new adventure,” Lea said. “Jack Wilson, the owner of Sweetwater Flower Shop, and I have a mutual friend who thought that our talents would complement each other. The restaurant offers several salads and sandwiches that remain on the menu every day with a daily special and homemade dessert.” The Mansion is open for l u n c h Tu e s d ay t h ro u g h Saturday, and the space is available to book for special events in the evenings. Shrimp and grits seems to be the favorite and has earned its place as a weekly special.” Like many people, Lea struggles to find enough time to spend with her family, friends, and ministries she’s involved with, but she does love her career. “I enjoy eating and sampling different recipes,” she said. “Each day I prepare a plate for my staff and ask that they try everything. They have been very open to trying things that they haven’t had before, many of which have now become their favorites. I enjoy hearing them talk about the dishes they are trying. They are becoming my best salespeople. The response from my customers has brought me such joy.”

She worked in banking and as a secretary for a while before deciding the food industry was where she belonged, so she earned a bachelor’s degree in food systems administration from Northern Illinois University, then completed an internship at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and London. “I start each morning preparing the dessert for the day,” she said. “I prepare desserts that you would find in the South. She not only is an officer of the company, she is the glue that makes the company operate as efficiently as it does, according to her husband, Glen Harness, and his partner, Olen Rowe. Her responsibilities carry way beyond just answering the phone and paying the bills – her administrative duties during a normal workday consist not only of answering the phones, but scheduling appointments for a four-man sales team, scheduling re-measures for jobs sold, invoicing, tracking customer payments, completing and issuing job folders, issuing payroll, ordering supplies, assisting customers in the showroom, and any day-to-day accounting activities required by the accountant. All of this in an eight-hour workday. “My biggest challenge has always been time management and continuing education of the products we offer so I can better assist our customers when they come in the showroom,” said Teena.

L

ike l ast month, I’ll

comment on the fiscal cliff debacle currently underway in Washington prior to its resolution, regardless of the outcome. I believe that the most looming challenge facing our nation today is that we ask our leaders to wear two hats: that of a statesperson and that of a politician. The two could not be more diametrically opposed. A statesperson, you would think, would make decisions that represented the best interest of the constituents they represent. A politician, on the other hand, would make decisions that would enhance their likelihood of being re-elected. I believe this paradox has been harmful to our country, resulting in inequities, inefficiencies, occasional corruption, and some portion of the blame for the most recent recession, just to name a few. My solution? Simple, actually. Eliminate presidential and congressional salaries. I

believe our elected leaders should be compensated based on results. Form an independent body that can monitor results such as changes to unemployment, education, deficit, GDP, and other key indicators. Politicians should enjoy unlimited income potential, and no floor either. Their incomes would be based entirely on the results they produce. Sound unachievable? Not at all. Millions of self-employed Americans from all political parties go to work daily, accepting that their fortunes will be based entirely on the results they produce each day. The expression often used is that “we eat what we kill.” There’s more truth in that statement than you might imagine. Performance-based compensation could go a long way in ending many of the seemingly insurmountable issues confronting our nation. In addition, few people from any political party would likely disagree that reduced unemployment, increased GDP, and deficit reduction are not in their personal best interest, no matter how partisan they may be.

The expression often used is that “we eat what we kill.” There’s more truth in that statement than you might imagine. Do I genuinely believe that my suggestions will ever see the light of day? One voice in hundreds of millions? Not likely. But there are millions of self-employed Americans – democrat, republican, and independent alike – that prove that performance-based compensation provides the necessary incentive required to produce a good, product, or service that benefits both the customer and the business owner alike, and the higher the service level, the greater the reward. Just imagine our unlimited potential if we’d all pulled in the same direction.

P

eo pl e -watc h i n g is grossly underrated. So much can be learned from observing others, especially when done introspectively. Recently I met a group of women for dinner and a movie. As we sat in the restaurant, I scanned the room to notice who was around. All the tables were full, thus people watching was easy. At the table beside us were a man, presumably a father, and two small children who appeared early elementary school aged. The younger one, a little girl, was bouncy and excited and wanted her dad’s attention. He was scanning his smartphone, totally distracted. After a few moments, the girl took the drastic measure of inserting her cute little face in between the man and his phone. She was relentless! That little girl was going to win the battle for her dad’s attention. Ouch. In my amusement, I chuckled at the girl’s tenacity, yet the lesson was obvious. If you are going to be there, then be there. This is a common trap for most, as we are e-connected continuously. While phones can increase productivity, they can wreak havoc in everyday communication. For most people, this constant invasion of intimacy can be quite offensive and

erode relationships greatly over time. We are in the business of people; at work, at home, and beyond. The measure of our success is likely linked to the success of our relationships. Thus as trends change, we must acknowledge that some things always ring true. People are important. While other things are important, nothing is more than the people in our lives. Value others by giving them your undivided attention. Practice the art of making others feel important. Listen! Many people never stop talking long enough to hear what others may have to say. Take time to listen to others, and fight the urge to speak while they are speaking. Maintain good eye contact, and be quiet! Now with smartphones, it is amazing how many people listen while surfing the internet. Practice the art of listening. Reflect. Take time to reflect; success, failure, people, goals, accomplishments, disappointments. Many of life’s greatest lessons are found in experience. Just like you treat others with value, do the same for yourself. Take time to reflect, learn, and grow introspectively. Allow time for yourself. Practice the art of silence. As you plan the New Year, give yourself a new kind of challenge. Name three key relationships

you want to improve. Use these simple strategies, treat them as important, listen, and reflect. If you do, you will enjoy positive change. The most important aspect of any organization is managing and growing people. While it’s simple, it’s far from easy. It’s much more comfortable to hide behind busy. Pay attention to others when in lobbies while waiting on appointments. Some of the best contacts come from unplanned introductions; unscripted meetings that just happened. If you are looking to make 2013 a successful year, then plan accordingly. Establish goals, compile budgets, and schedule meetings. Just don’t overlook your most valuable asset. Your business is people.

Cutting-Edge Cosmetology Tennessee School of Beauty Tennessee School of Beauty (TSB) is Knoxville’s longest standing, and most modern, beauty school. In addition to providing superior education to students and opening career doors for its graduates, the school continually strives to offer the most modern services and up-to-date education. In late 2012, TSB became the first beauty school in the nation to move to online testing, allowing students to test from home or anywhere they like, in their own environment. “The student reaction has been overwhelming,” states Adam Brown, owner. “They love that they can test in their own choice of surroundings and are very proud that their beauty school is the first in the nation to make this possible.” TSB also recently partnered with Redken to become a Redken Premier School. TSB educators have undergone extensive training in new Redken methods, and the student salon is now a full-featured Redken Student Salon, open to the general public and offering discounted services. TSB also has its own iPhone and Android apps, allowing salon clients to book and check appointments directly from their phones.

Outlook for Cosmetology Careers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals who are considering a career in cosmetology will have no problem finding employment. The demand for cosmetologists and all its divisions will grow by 20% through 2018, and the trend is believed to climb steadily thereafter. TSB is currently enrolling students for their upcoming Cosmetology, Nail, and Esthetics classes. TSB is also the only school in the state offering Medical Esthetics. When you call or visit the school to discuss your future education and career, you will speak with Adam or George, the owners of the school. They meet with each prospective student to make sure you have all of the information and every opportunity you need to succeed. After the meeting, you will no doubt come to see that TSB is the logical choice for your future. The 17,000 foot Salon and Day Spa Training Center is top of the line, and the school was recently chosen as one of the top beauty schools in the United States by Modern Salon Magazine. They have helped

more than 1,000 of their graduates become salon owners, including such high-end salons as Salon Visage.

Discount Services

Whether you’re interested in becoming a licensed salon professional or just looking to save 50-75% on hair and nail services, TSB can help. Only senior designers, supervised by licensed instructors, perform the beauty and nail services. Many of these upcoming graduates will be working in the top salons and spas or teaching at other schools across the nation in just a few days. GRAMMY-winning outfit throws down every night with expert musicianship, hearty Southern rock, and an unparalleled fan experience that’s selling out arenas and amphitheaters from coast to coast on their fall tour. The band’s latest album, “Uncaged” ( At l a nt i c /S o u t h e r n G ro u n d ) , debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The result of a highly collaborative process, it’s the sound of a group of versatile musicians gelling into a formidable unit and realizing they’re capable of anything their fearless leader happens to dream up, from traditional country (“The Wind”) to Caribbean rhythms (“Jump Right In”), and even slinky bedroom R&B (“Overnight”). Running roughshod over genre boundaries, and bringing its audience along for the ride, its title is absolutely accurate – this is truly the sound of a band “Uncaged.” The band is continuing with their Eat &

Women We Know… Strong, Courageous, and Resilient

I

’ll never forget the night I sang the National Anthem for a professional sports team. It was my big moment, singing in front of tens of thousands of people at the Miami Heat game. I was prepared, beautifully dressed, sporting a new shade of lipstick, and I was nine months pregnant. Against my doctor’s advice, since I was already two days past due, I couldn’t pass up this incredible honor and opportunity. I waddled out to center court and sang my little heart out. The crowd went nuts, and all went well. This moment is embedded in my memory as a life-changing experience, because Cindi Alpert now, whenever I’m nervous, whether it’s performing a concert or giving a presentation, I think back to that moment frozen in time at the Miami Heat game and remind myself that no matter how much I stumble my words or mess up a song, at least I won’t go into labor. It gets me through every time. I asked some notable women I’ve met in Knoxville to share some of their stories, and I was overwhelmed with the response. I couldn’t fit all the amazing stories on one page, so this is going to be one of a two-part piece on women we know. These women are strong, courageous, and resilient. The hard part was asking them to sum up a life changing experience in 200 words or less. Here’s what they had to say.

Madeline Rogero

Knoxville Mayor When I’m asked about an experience that was intimidating for me or pushed me to move out of my comfort zone, my mind immediately recalls my first foray in politics. I was 37 years old and received a call from an elected official who encouraged me to run on the Democratic ticket for county commission against a Republican who had held the seat for 24 years. My first reaction

was “I’m not qualified.” But he encouraged me to look into it, and I began to talk to friends, read books about running for office, and learn about county commission. I had several strikes against me: I wasn’t from Knoxville, I had an ethnic-sounding name that was difficult to pronounce and spell, I was, by then, divorced with two children, ages 11 and 14, and I had worked with farm workers and non-profit organizations – not your typical jobs for Knoxville politicians. My friends kept encouraging me, so I filed my papers for the election on the last day. My opponent was a gentleman who didn’t campaign much, because he just didn’t Madeline Rogero figure I was a threat. The few times I did see him in public, he would greet me warmly and introduce me to his friends, saying, “This is my opponent. Isn’t she pretty?” Well, I just smiled and tried to be as “pretty” as possible, so he wouldn’t think of me as a threat. The common political wisdom was that we couldn’t win, but we did. By a landslide. My opponent’s wife was quoted as saying, “We don’t know what happened.” However, nobody was more surprised than me! I’m glad I took that first step, because it eventually led to the best job I’ve ever had: being mayor of Knoxville.

Darla Oringderff

Speech Language Pathologist I’m a 47 year old, Speech-Language Pathologist, homeschooling mother of two. I’ve never participated in sports. However, two years ago, while enrolling my eight year old son in a Judo class, I mentioned to his coach that the sport looked fun. He cautiously noted my enthusiasm, mentioned that Judo is a rough sport, and recommended me to an adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class. BJJ is defined as a martial art, combat sport, self defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. “Yeah, that sounds less rough,” I thought nervously. My husband and

I attended the first class together. He warned me that I might get hurt and that I couldn’t cry. It’s now been more than two years since that first class. I admit I was nervous before every class for the first six months, but I persevered. I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone, and with the encouragement of my family and teammates at TN BJJ, I even competed and won a Bronze Medal in the 2011 Tennessee State BJJ Championship, fighting girls literally half my age. I am now a onestripe blue belt. However, the best part was not losing 20 lbs and gaining strength and flexibility. The best part was when my 11 year old daughter decided to step out of her comfort zone and Darla Oringderff said, “Mom, I want to try Judo, too. I’ve been watching you, and if you can do it, I can, too.” She said the same thing after my competition, and she went on to win a Silver Medal in the UT Judo Tournament. I may be getting older, but I’m not getting old. I still want to learn new things and challenge myself. I want to be a good example to my children to do the same.

Amber Roggeman

Business Owner/bath junkie At the age of 21, I lost both of my parents within a six month span. This was obviously a traumatic, life-changing event which molded me into who I am today. From that early age I made a conscious decision to press on and persevere no matter what life throws at me. As an only child, I had to quickly gain the Amber Roggeman strength and independence to carry on, because I know that is what my parents would have wanted. That early experience plays a significant role in my professional life today as a small business owner.

When Only One Set of Grandparents Chooses to be Involved

W

hat do you do

when one set of grandparents is involved with their grandchildren and the other set of grandparents seem to be uninterested in creating a relationship with them? They make little to no effort to spend time with their grandchildren, get involved in their lives, or develop their own relationship with them. Not only does your heart ache for your children, but you also find yourself struggling with your own feelings. Of course, you want both sets of grandparents to be part of your children’s lives, and you don’t understand why your parents don’t want the same thing… particularly when it’s your parents who don’t seem interested in your children. You cringe at the thought of your children feeling the pain, hurt, and abandonment you fear they will feel due to the lack of involvement by one set of grandparents. What you tend to do, then, is try to make it happen. You’ll go out of your way to

Etiquette

get your uninvolved, uninterested parents to spend time with your children. It becomes hurtful, painful, and frustrating to both you and your spouse, particularly the one whose parents are acting this way. So, what can you, as parents, do in this situation? You want your children to experience the love and interaction only grandparents can give. You want your children to experience the joy of this special relationship; create memories around this relationship. As hard as this may be, you need to let go of your own desires and let the grandparents create whatever relationship they choose to have (or not have) with their grandchildren. It’s their relationship. To make it easier to do this, know that your children will be ok. They don’t see this relationship the same way you do. They view it as “this is just my grandma and grandpa.” It’s not good or bad… it just is. This is their relationship with their grandparents. You can also focus on the people who are in relationship with your children, not

the people who choose not to be. The other set of grandparents, your friends, other family members, and so on. You have many people who do value them, who do want to be part of their lives. Those are the people who matter. Trying to get people involved who show no interest will only frustrate and hurt you, and you will end up doing all the work to create their relationship. If you stop doing the work, be assured they will not pick up the slack. As hard as this may be to accept, please know your parents’ lack of interest in your children is not a reflection of you or your children. It is a reflection of them. Goals Mean Success

W

elcome to 2013!

Wow, it’s really here. As you know, starting a new year is a great time to re-evaluate our lives and look for areas for improvement, but also recognize what is right in our lives and be grateful. There are many traits to ladies and gentlemen that are worthy to mention. The one we’ll discuss this month is being goal oriented. One thing I have noticed about the ladies and gentlemen I admire the most is they tend to be very goal oriented. Having goals, writing them down, both long-term and short-term, is what keeps our lives better organized, gives us real purpose, and blesses us with the joy of accomplishment. This is a great month to begin this exercise. Here’s the assignment. Think of what you would like to be different in your life five years from now. Be realistic, but don’t be afraid to reach high and dream a little. Where would you like to live? Who 74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2013

would you like to be working for? What would you like to weigh? What would you like to accomplish? Write down at least one fiveyear goal, but preferably two or three. The next step is to break down each longterm goal into five short-term goals. What five things do you need to accomplish for each of your long-term goals to be achieved? (These must be things that you do have control over.) These five short-term goals can be goals that can take you up to five years for you to accomplish, but lead you to your longer goals. Finally, for each short-term goal, make at least two immediate goals that you can achieve in the next 30-90 days. At the end of each immediate goal period, re-assess your immediate goals to reflect your accomplishments. This process might sound redundant, unnecessary, or too time consuming. This is not true. The time and effort many of us spend going in circles each day without accomplishing much can be truly exhausting and a waste of our valuable time. Make each

moment count. Make sure that your day is filled with at least a few moments devoted to your goals, so you can feel each day was a step closer to your long-term goals. There is great satisfaction from this exercise. This can be your new lifestyle. I have found that when I am goal oriented, I am happier, better fulfilled, and more at peace with my life. All of us want to accomplish great things and be a positive influence on society. Start with setting a goal. Ladies and gentlemen are people of accomplishment, because they are people with a purpose.
