From the Publisher WHEN A PERSON AGES,

celebrating the start of a New Year becomes more of a priority. Time passes so quickly, and there are resolutions we all want to accomplish and not delay for another year. For Tom and me, the resolution to travel more is on the top of our list rather than wait another year or wait until all our “ducks are in a row.” We’ve already made some adjustments like downsizing and simplifying our daily life to make more time to just get away and visit places that are on our “bucket list.”

MAGINE YOUR VERY OWN private sanctuary – a

relaxing retreat, a place to be pampered – where you can be comfortable, rejuvenated, and transformed from the tensions of everyday life. Welcome to Pure Luxe Salon, Spa & Medspa, East Tennessee’s premier salon, spa, and medspa. After Pure Luxe founder and local area entrepreneur, Rusty Bittle, visited several of the world’s finest resorts and destination spas, he envisioned recreating the experiences he had discovered right here in East Tennessee. 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2016

Today Pure Luxe, in its 9,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility, offers visitors an experience unlike any other they’ll find in the Greater Knoxville area. Immense your entire being into an ambiance of relaxation, peace, and serenity. Pamper yourself with Pure Luxe’s diverse array of services, including the freshest trends in hair, nails, medical aesthetics, and the latest techniques in spa therapy – all in a world-class atmosphere and all delivered by their knowledgeable and professional associates that are caring, confident, and committed to providing you with a purely luxurious experience.

In our January 2016 New Year’s issue, Everything Knoxville is delighted to feature East Tennessee’s Pure Luxe Salon, Spa & Medspa. EK: Pure Luxe is often described as the Knoxville area’s only full-service salon, spa, and medspa. Why is this so important to your clients? Lynn Bibee, Spa Director: With our lives getting busier, convenience and efficiency is crucial for many people, and as a mom, I know convenience is huge for me. Since we offer such a wide variety of services under one roof, we truly are a “one-stop shop.” You Photo by D. Roberts Photography

From L to R: Inara Gadzhiyeva, Chelsea Knight, Natalie Malicote, Lynn Bibee, and Autumn Nease can come receive a manicure and pedicure, have your hair cut, colored, and styled, have a relaxing massage, and receive BOTOX® all in one place without having to schedule all those appointments at different locations. It truly is a unique, and convenient, experience at Pure Luxe. EK: In addition to offering a unique salon and spa experience that offers hair, nail, and massage services, tell our readers about the special aesthetic services you offer Pure Luxe clients. Natalie Malicote, Licensed Aesthetician: At Pure Luxe, we love what we do and can provide many services, including facials, eyelash extensions, body wraps and scrubs, and facial

peel services. All of our aestheticians can also knowledgably speak of our skincare lines, and we are more than happy to help and advise guests on the best regimen for their skin type, whether that’s a microdermabrasion, a peel, or a combination of the two. EK: Our readers will be delightfully surprised to discover the extensive selection of medspa services that Pure Luxe offers. Let’s start with the injectables. Tell us what injectables you offer and how our readers can benefit from them. Inara Gadzhiyeva, RN: We offer BOTOX®, JUVÉDERM® XC, and JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA XC fillers. BOTOX® is used to improve facial lines and wrinkles and helps to visibly smooth them in just a short amount of time. JUVÉDERM® XC and JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA XC are designed to smooth aging lines, add volume in the cheek area, and can also be used to add volume to lips. All of our injectables help our clients feel younger and more radiant! EK: Quickly tell us about your BOTOX® – CLUB 90 TEN. Inara: CLUB 90 TEN is an exclusive BOTOX® cosmetic program that rewards our clients for maintaining a regular treatment schedule. CLUB 90 TEN members have access to preferred benefits and events, including $10 per unit pricing and the Refer a Friend program. You can sign up at anytime by filling out a simple form and paying the $90 annual enrollment fee, and, of course, Chelsea and I are always available to answer any questions about BOTOX® or CLUB 90 TEN. EK: Pure Luxe offers a wide variety of body contouring and weight loss services, including CoolSculpting and HCG weight loss programs. Tell us about both of these programs. Chelsea Knight, RN: CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, non-surgical body contouring treatment that reduces fat areas by targeting and freezing the fat cells to permanently remove them from the body. The best part is this treatment has minimal to no downtime. The HCG weight loss program is a sciencebased diet program for guests seeking a healthy way to lose weight and maintain overall health and wellness. Each program is geared specifically for each individual and can last 14, 21, or 42 days. Inara and I are always willing to help each guest figure out what programs and services will work best for them. EK: You also offer an extensive array of laser services. How do your clients benefit from these services? Chelsea: Lasers can be used to treat wrinkles and sun damage, as well as improve skin tone and tighten the skin. They can also be used to treat veins and remove hair. Looking to treat your fine lines and wrinkles? Our Pearl Fusion laser would be a good fit for you. Looking to improve your skin tone and surface imperfections? The Limelight would work best. Inara and I consult guests first to determine which laser treatment would be best. We want our clients to feel comfortable in the process and

love their results! EK: Pure Luxe recently introduced an FDAcleared procedure called miraDry®. Explain what this procedure does. Inara: We are the only facility in the region to offer this service. It provides a lasting reduction of underarm sweat in a completely non-invasive way. You can experience dramatic sweat, odor, and hair reduction in your underarms in as little as one treatment, without harsh chemicals, toxins, or surgery. Both Chelsea and I have been extensively trained on this procedure. One of the things we love most about it is that there’s little to no downtime. You can go right back to work after having it done! EK: Describe some of the many skincare services offered at Pure Luxe. Autumn Nease, Licensed Aesthetician: We offer five different types of facials and offer both IMAGE and SkinMedica peels. We also offer microdermabrasions and dermaplaning. If you’re looking for a relaxing facial experience, try our Pure Luxe Signature Facial. We even have a facial specifically geared towards our male clients, the Executive Facial. As aestheticians, we can consult on what services will be perfect for each guest, including which skincare line is best based on their concerns, goals, and skin type. EK: Would you like to extend a special invitation to our readers to visit your salon, spa, and medspa to discover how they too can enjoy the Pure Luxe Experience? Lynn: Of course! For all first time Pure Luxe guests, we will offer 25% off your first salon or spa service. During the month of January, we will also be offering 30% off all laser service packages to help our guests prepare to look their best for the quickly approaching spring and summer. We also will have additional offers this month that can be found on our social media pages and website. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Lynn: We know that in the New Year, people set goals to feel and look their best, and we have the means to help people achieve these goals. Whether it’s weight loss, better skin, laser hair removal, or even less stress, Pure Luxe has the talent and heart to help our guests achieve what they’re hoping for. Each of our team members are well-trained, experienced, and excited to serve Knoxville and the surrounding communities. We hope that we can help our guests escape the stresses of life while providing an enjoyable Pure Luxe experience.

Reinvent Your New Year’s Resolution: Include Your Pet ‘TIS THE SEASON

for new beginnings. As holiday gifts give way to New Year’s resolutions, general health and wellness is top-of-mind, consistently ranking as a top goal for both men and women this time of year. This resolution season try incorporating lifestyle changes that benefit both you and your pet. PetSmart veterinarian and pet care expert Dr. Kemba Marshall provides some helpful tips for achieving a healthier lifestyle for you and your animal companions. 1. Exercise is key. Pets, like humans, need physical activity in order to be healthy. The good news is that giving your pet adequate daily exercise is easy! For some dog breeds, 30-minute walks are enough. For others, a game of fetch does the trick. Interested in trying something new? Mix up the activity. Try sprinting alongside your pet in quick intervals.

Balls are great for fetch, but have you ever tried a frisbee? Even a quick trip to the mailbox each day is a great option. No matter what both you and your pet will have fun spending time together and getting a workout. 2. Stimulate the brain. Maintaining a healthy pet lifestyle goes beyond physical exercise. Activities to stimulate a pet’s mental skills are fun and important, too. Try a treat-dispensing or puzzle toy with your

dog or cat to keep their mind active. Introduce the new toy before a meal so your pet will be hungry to learn. 3. Optimize the diet. Have you been feeding your pet the same food for years? It may be time for you and your veterinarian to assess his food and make sure you’re providing one that is healthy and satisfying. The best way to switch your pet’s food is by providing a gradual transition, mixing the old food with the new for up to 10 days. 4. Monitor your pet’s activity and behavior. This may come as a surprise to many, but discovering an unhealthy habit in your pet’s day-to-day life is as simple as paying closer attention to his or her behavior. While many humans monitor their daily behavior with technical gadgets and apps, monitoring a pet’s daily activity may also lead to a healthier lifestyle. Is your pup demonstrating pent-up energy? More exercise might be necessary. Are they devouring their food too quickly? Maybe an active feeding approach is the right solution. Most often correcting the behavior is as easy as discovering it in the first place. 5. Stick with your resolutions. Change can be tough on pets, especially when it disrupts diet or day-to-day routines. The important thing to remember is that positive results rarely come without work. As cliché as it may sound, both you and your pet will be thankful for the change in the long run. These tips are a wonderful way to kick-start a healthier lifestyle for both you and your pet in the New Year. Increasing your physical activity and improving your diet are just the first two steps. By monitoring yourself and your pet, increasing mental stimulation and sticking with your resolutions, a newer, healthier life for both you and your furry friend is well within reach. Walker Realty Group A Fresh Approach for All Your Real Estate Needs

W

ALKER REALTY GROUP

was launched in 2013. After gaining experience in a conventional residential real estate marketplace, I was convinced that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to selling homes was not always appropriate for each client or their current situation. I felt that there was a need for a fresh, comprehensive, and more customized approach to selling and buying real estate. Today’s technology provides the opportunity for sellers and buyers to be better informed now more than ever, so it has become our objective to offer each and every client a totally unique approach to selling and buying. We combine experience, the latest technology, and a customized plan that suits your particular needs and enhances your chances for success. In addition to our customized real estate services, our team of real estate professionals place customer service as their primary objective. Our team is excited to share with you both our real estate expertise and knowledge with complete transparency. We view ourselves as real estate professionals whose goal is to serve you and meet your needs – it’s not just a sale’s job. We strive to exceed each client’s expectations and never settle for “mediocrity.” This represents the cornerstone of Walker Realty Group.

SO WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

» We listen: Walker Realty Group listens. We pride ourselves in finding out what is motivating our clients. Is it time, money, family situation, or something else driving the sale of your home or your buying decision? Once the motivation has been determined, we adjust our strategies to work more efficiently to achieve our client’s goals. Each of our team members is skilled in the art of listening. We understand that it would be impossible to design a comprehensive approach to buying or selling your home without your valuable input. » Low pressure: When we do our job well, there’s no need to resort to high pressure sale’s tactics. We’re willing to work with our buyers for as long as it takes for them to find the perfect home that suits their needs. Sometimes this happens quickly, but in some cases, buyers take much longer to find the perfect home. 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2016

Buying a home is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. The buyer needs to feel comfortable and have the opportunity to take the time they need to make the right decision for them. There will be no questions when you walk through the door of your dream home – you’ll know it’s the one. » Customer service: It’s our willingness to go that extra mile that results in the success that both buyers and sellers are striving to achieve. A willingness to do whatever it takes, whether you’re in town or away. We want to wow you with our customer service. We have taken care of pets, patched holes, made beds, cleaned toilets, set alarms, etc. – whatever is required to show a home at its best. Our approach has blessed us with lasting relationships and, in turn, repeat business and referrals, for which we are truly grateful. » No hassles: Our goal is to exceed your expectations. If we fall short of your expectations, we’ll do everything in our power to make things right, including releasing a client from their listing contract. Furthermore, we don’t pressure buyers into signing an upfront Buyer Representation Agreement. We’re certain that as long as we’re meeting or exceeding the buyer’s expectations, offering exceptional customer service, explaining how the process works, and maintaining open communication with the buyer, there’s no need for extra pressure. » Communication: This is one of the most complained about areas in real estate for both buyers and sellers. We hear it all the time. Our commitment to you is to keep you fully informed with all activity related to your transaction. Occasionally, when activity slows, communication can start to break down. No real estate agent enjoys sharing this news with their client. At Walker Realty Group, regardless of the activity, we communicate with all of our clients weekly. It’s then that we can assess the marketing strategy and make agreed upon refinements as necessary. » Flexible commissions: We offer a full menu of services designed to fit your unique needs. We offer full service where you can sit back and relax while we take care of everything. We have had great success with a For Sale by Owner option that allows the seller to continue to market their own home. There is

even a flat fee option. Your listing commission is tailored to your personal needs. » Our agents: At Walker Realty Group, we’re in the business of placing our clients’ needs first. We select agents who share our core values and beliefs. All of our agents are committed to educating our clients, walking them through the entire real estate process and supporting them to achieve their individual goals. We’re also committed team players who recognize the importance of communicating with both the client and any other agent involved. Our agents go through an in-depth interview process to ensure that their goals are compatible with our company’s and clients’ goals and values. » Locally owned and operated: Walker Realty Group is not a franchise or large corporate entity. Rather, we are a committed small family business who shares much in common with the people we serve. We have lived in Knoxville since 1992 and have raised our family here. East Tennessee has so much natural beauty with the lakes, mountain views, and distinct four seasons that we can’t imagine calling any other place home. Whether you’re interested in selling or buying a starter home, your dream home, or anything in between, I know that Walker Realty Group is a great choice when selecting a real estate brokerage company. We offer a full menu of personalized and catered services and a fresh, new approach to today’s real estate marketplace. Today is a great time to sit down and discuss your goals and personalized marketing plan. Spring is always one of the busiest times in real estate, and now is the perfect time to review all of your options and best decide how we can help you achieve your goals.

How to Get Rid of a

“Double Chin” IF YOU GOOGLE

“how to get rid of a double chin,” you would be surprised at the number of at-home remedies that are available out there. Some of my favorites are, in no particular order, chewing gum, an egg-white and peppermint oil massage (I think the peppermint is to keep you from smelling like a fried egg), and using wheat germ oil as a topical potion. The exercises that you’ll see on YouTube, if you’re interested, are hysterical. All this begs the question: What really works to get rid of a “double chin?” The first, and most obvious, is overall weight reduction. If you are 50+ pounds overweight, you will very likely have a “double chin.” Getting close to or at your ideal body weight is a great way to start and will eliminate the “double chin” quite nicely. For women, this is easily figured by starting at 100 pounds and then adding 5 pounds for each inch of height over 5 feet; for guys, start at 106 pounds and add 6 pounds for each inch over 5 feet. (For example, a woman that is 5’6” tall will have an ideal body weight of 100 plus 6 inches x 5 pounds, equaling 130 pounds.) However, even at an ideal body weight, there can be a small amount of fat that is left behind. There are a number of surgical treatments for the “double chin” that are very effective. Traditionally, liposuction has been, and continues to be, the goldstandard treatment for fat excess in this area. For smaller areas of liposuction, this can be done in the office under local anesthesia. Larger areas, or more extensive liposuction procedures or surgery,

Before & After Kybella treatment

Join us for our 2016 Lunch & Learn Series! Wednesdays 12:00 – 1:00 pm » January 20: Neck Rejuvenation » February 10: Breast Augmentation (Shaped Implants) » March 30: Fillers & Skin Care: Who needs facial surgery anymore?

Spaces are limited! RSVP to face@drjasonhall.com or 865-590-9409. are done in our on-site operating rooms. Liposuction procedures will require a modest recovery – usually about two weeks or so for bruising to resolve, as well as wearing some form of compression garment for a similar length of time. Surgical treatment, in the form of a neck lift with fat removal, is typically reserved for patients with not only excess fat, but with extra skin and/or neck bands. Necklift surgery is often combined with facelift surgery to give comprehensive rejuvenation to the entire lower face, but it can be done as a stand-alone procedure. The neck bands can be addressed, and the “double chin” fat is directly removed with scissors. Necklift surgery is done in our operating rooms below my office and requires either heavy sedation or general anesthesia for the optimal results. Again, a recovery time of about two weeks is expected.

A new treatment option, just arriving on the scene, is Kybella. Kybella is an injectable medication that acts to destroy fat cells and non-surgically eliminate the “double chin” fat. It is only available to a few practices in the area as of this writing, and Brooke Nix and I are pleased to be one of the only practices in Knoxville to currently offer this new treatment. The procedure itself takes about 10 minutes, and aside from some swelling in the area of the injections, there is very little “recovery time” to speak of. Depending on the amount of fat to be dissolved, a few treatments may be necessary (separated by 4-6 weeks). The jawline and neck are important aesthetic landmarks for both men and women and help to communicate a message of youthfulness, health, and vitality. As you can see, there are a number of options to help you address this area. Call our office or visit our website, and we can help you choose the proper treatment to help smooth and contour your jawline and neck.

The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 and Its Impact on Social Security Claiming Strategies

Business

I N NOVEMBER,

President Obama signed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015. It raised the federal debt limit and established a framework for a two-year budget deal. It also eliminated two Social Security retirement benefit claiming strategies. These two techniques are “File and Suspend” and “Restricted Application.” Here are some details on those changes. File and Suspend This strategy allows a spouse, at full retirement age, to file for retirement benefits and then suspend them so Ali that they continue to earn Swofford, delayed retirement credits. PhD The principal purpose for filing and suspending was to allow the other spouse to claim spousal benefits. In a provision labeled “closure of unintended loopholes,” the legislation eliminates this strategy – if an individual suspends retirement benefits, neither the individual nor their spouse can receive spousal benefits during the suspension period. This provision will be effective in May and applies to new file and suspend claims. Those who are both eligible and have implemented the file and suspend strategy before May won’t be affected. Restricted Application Another strategy to increase retirement income involves one spouse filing for spousal benefits first, then switching to their higher retirement benefit later. If a spouse reaches full retirement age and is eligible for both a spousal benefit based on their spouse’s earnings record and a retirement benefit based on their own earnings record, he or she could choose to file a restricted application for spousal benefits only, delay applying for retirement benefits on their own earnings record (up until age 70) in order to earn delayed retirement credits. The legislation eliminates this strategy. Under the proposed legislation, those born prior to 1954 can continue to use this strategy. Those born in 1954 or later won’t be able to use this strategy. People in this category who claim a spousal benefit, even after they have reached their full retirement age, will be forced to also start their own retirement benefit. Make sure you get all the Social Security benefits you are entitled to.

Guideposts to Health

T

HERE ARE MANY ways to start the New Year off right when

it comes to our health. Watching what we eat, exercising to help lose those extra pounds, and becoming more aware of the signals that our bodies are telling us are just a few examples. “Meigen” is described in ancient eastern texts as an occurrence in the last stage of a disease before the disease loosens its hold on the organism. Just before this occurrence, the person may feel worse than ever, as the body finally discharges the toxicity that created the illness. One such example is the flu. Sometimes you begin to feel worse, as your immune system kicks in, before you feel better. Typically we think of disease as something that occurs when certain symptoms have manifested. Some we are acutely aware of, such as the pain of arthritis. Others, such as hypertension, we may not be aware of until it is discovered at our physical. Yet long before these symptoms and measurements arise, if we are observant of our own health condition, we can see the development of disease and take steps to avoid or reverse it before it manifests into these symptoms. The question comes to mind – are there signs that our bodies are telling us so we can make adjustments in our daily lives to change the direction of our health? And if so, what are they? According to Michio Kushi, worldrenowned teacher and author of the book “Your Face Never Lies,” there are many signs that our face can give. For example, the area between the eyebrows is related to the liver. If there are lines that form in this area, then the liver is congested. He states that eating green foods and sour foods can help counteract this. Fingernails are a great indicator of oxygen in the body. It is a known fact that people that have smoked for years develop lung problems, which lowers the amount of oxygen in the body. Cyanosis, as well as bluing and/or clubbing of the nails, manifest low oxygen. Learning signs of each of our own bodies can help guide us to make better choices as we navigate ourselves back to our preferred health. Maintaining a balanced diet goes a long way to helping us stay healthy and strive to achieve our preferred health as we enter the New Year. Using the signs of our bodies and being observant of those signs and changes helps us to navigate ourselves to making better choices for our health this year, as well as for the future to come. Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Back in the National Rankings! WITH EACH

passing season I am reminded of how blessed I am to live in East Tennessee. There are so many things to love about this area – the distinct seasons, all of the wonderful outdoor activities that surround us on a daily basis, and even Tennessee football. (It’s great to be able to look forward to football season around here again!) However, I am also reminded with each changing season that we pay a price for where we live – allergies! Each year the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America publishes its list of Allergy Capitals. In 2015, Knoxville was ranked as the 5th most challenging city in which to live for those with spring allergies and 6th for fall allergies. It is common for my new patients who have just moved to the area to come in for office visits for allergy symptoms, even when they have never suffered from allergies before. In fact, I often tell them that the Chamber of Commerce should put something in the welcome brochure about allergies in East Tennessee – it is that predictable! It has been estimated that worldwide, allergic rhinitis (typical hay fever type symptoms – sneezing, runny nose, itchy

eyes, etc.) affects 10-30% of the population. Obviously, living in a place like East Tennessee, the number of allergy sufferers is probably closer to the higher range of that statistic. Allergy symptoms can also extend beyond just the normal “hay fever” symptoms. Fatigue, rashes, hives, dark circles under the eyes (called allergic shiners), headaches, chronic cough, and recurrent sinus infections or other upper respiratory illnesses are all possible symptoms of untreated, or undertreated, allergies. The good news is that effective treatments are available. These treatments range from nose sprays that can decrease symptoms to allergy pills that can be taken either daily or on an as-needed basis. The most effective long-term treatment for allergies is actually allergy immunotherapy. It is the only type of treatment that can actually change the natural course of allergy symptoms and progression. It works by introducing to a person’s system very small amounts of the substance that the individual reacts to on allergy testing so the body begins to make antibodies to that substance. The long-term result is that over time (on average one to five years), the person’s body stops reacting

to that particular allergen. With spring rapidly approaching, isn’t it time to do something about those allergies you suffer with during this time of year? You don’t have to just deal with the symptoms – effective treatments await! If you are interested in finding out more or being tested and treated for your allergy symptoms, contact your doctor. If you don’t have a doctor, call our office at 865-671-0798. We would love to help you have a healthy, happy 2016! in medicine began early in life, and along with the steadfast encouragement of my greatest mentor – my father, an entrepreneur – I discovered that I could achieve anything in life by combining a strong work ethic and a dedication to my dreams. Sadly, my father passed away far too early, but he still took a great deal of pride in seeing his daughter become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a master’s degree in nursing along with becoming a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. It’s in my father’s memory that I started Gott Family Medical Clinic. Gott Family Medical Clinic is dedicated to helping every member of your family achieve their optimal health potential. As an APRN, I am educated and trained to provide health promotion and maintenance through the diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and chronic conditions. Our office provides a relaxed, comfortable environment for your healthcare in a convenient location. The services I provide include: » Direct Primary Care (adult and child) » Urgent Care (allergies, cold/flu, lacerations/ cuts, coughs/sore throats, sinus problems) » Complete physicals, sports physicals, work physicals » Vaccinations » In-office testing (rapid strep tests, influenza tests) » In-office diagnostics (spirometry, blood glucose) 20

KNOXVILLE TO CELEBRATE

225 Anniversary th

in 2016

THE CITY OF KNOXVILLE will cel-

ebrate its 225th anniversary on October 3, 2016. Starting in January, Visit Knoxville will collaborate with numerous art, historical, and cultural organizations to highlight Knoxville’s unique past. “All cities and towns began somewhere, but Knoxville’s birth was more deliberate, and more significant, than most,” said Jack Neely, Executive Director of the Knoxville History Project. “Though probably not much to look at, Knoxville at its birth in 1791 was the capital of the Southwest Territory, and therefore one of only 17 capital cities in the new United States. It soon hosted one of the first American newspapers and one of the first American colleges west of the Appalachians. And just four years after its birth, Knoxville hosted the effort to found a state called Tennessee. Although it

has been almost 200 years since Knoxville has served its original purpose, as a capital of government, Knoxville has grown in different and unexpected ways – politically, industrially, culturally, educationally – to become an emblematic American city and central to the story of a nation that was new when Knoxville was founded.” Knoxville’s history is preserved and marvelously told by its historic homes and museums. Upcoming events like Knoxville Stomp will join a long list of signature events that are unique to Knoxville. Annual festivals, including Dogwood Arts, Big Ears, Rossini, and the East Tennessee History Fair, exhibit the many ways in which Knoxville is culturally diverse and historically significant. This year will allow many organizations to tell their own story through the lens of the 225th anniversary.

“Our city has a rich and vibrant history, from pioneer days through the industrial revolution and into the digital age,” said Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero. “We will be spotlighting many strands of Knoxville’s story throughout the 225th anniversary year. I hope everyone will join in this civic celebration!” The 2016 Knoxville Visitors and Relocation Guide will have a heavy focus on the 225th anniversary, offering current residents, newcomers, and out-of-town guests the opportunity to explore and actively engage in our history and culture. On behalf of the City of Knoxville, Visit Knoxville is coordinating all events and information regarding the 225th anniversary. New Year’s Resolution: Watch the Diet! IF YOU PACKED ON

the pounds during the holidays, your dog probably did, too. It may be time to cut both of your calories. Weight and exercise are keys to a healthy dog, and so is counting calories. Count all the calories, including treats, chews, leftovers, and supplements. Many dog treats do not show calories on the label. Greenies have from 25 to a whopping 272 calories, and Milk Bone dog biscuits range from 10 to 225 calories. Bully sticks may have about 29 calories per inch and rawhides about 80 calories per ounce. So if your dog is packing on the pounds while eating the recommended portion on the dog food label, it might be getting added calories from these other sources. Many dogs who are counting calories come to the kennel with green beans in their diet. Non-starchy vegetables added to a commercial diet are a great additive, and in most circumstances, the dog can have as many as they want. These non-starchy vegetables include carrots, broccoli, zucchini and other

summer squashes, green beans, and all other kinds of leafy greens. Low in calories, they provide valuable antioxidants and phytonutrients, which help your dog feel fuller. Vegetables should be cooked or pureed to aid in digestion. Raw veggies such as carrot sticks, green beans, or zucchini slices are great treat substitutes but in moderation. Studies have shown that thin dogs live significantly longer as their health and mobility are better. Like humans, watch the calorie intake and ensure your dog is on a low-fat, low-calorie diet. At Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, our homemade treats’ main ingredients are healthy, low-calorie components. Keeping your dog happy and content is our primary objective and is imperative to a long life.

In 1996, she created the Imagination Library through the Dollywood Foundation, which sends a free, high-quality, age appropriate book through the mail every month to children under five. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Knox County boasts the highest per capita registration rate of any urban community in the United States, sending free books to more than 19,000 children each month.

downtown Sweetwater is excited to announce the a dd ition of a ch i ld ren’s art teacher to their staff. B e g i n n i n g o n Ja n u a r y 19th, Jennie Harriman will begin instructing classes in children’s art here at the Gallery. Jennie just relocated to the Sweetwater area from the north. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and an MA in Early Childhood Education. Actively teaching for 22 years, Jennie has also developed a how-to woodworking book, “Hammer, Saw, Drill,” with the collaboration of 50 preschool children. Her classes at the Gallery will begin on January 19th with a five-week series called “Introduction to Woodworking.” In this class, students may make boats, airplanes, animals, and more as they learn basic woodworking skills. Students will also make a toy dogsled as they learn about the 1,000mile Iditarod dogsled race that occurs annually in March in Alaska. Jennie was privileged to attend a teacher’s conference at the Iditarod in 2012. Our second series of classes, titled “Little House Woodworking,” will begin on March 8th. This is a three-week series, and projects will be inspired by the “Little House on the Prairie” series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Jennie will read from several of Ms. Wilder’s books to integrate literature into the class. Projects will include a toy bed, a toy sled, and a bootjack that the students’ families can use. The third series, titled “The Art of Ancient Egypt,” will begin on April 5th and is a four-week series. Students will explore the art and history of this intriguing time and place. Jennie explored Cairo and Giza in 2015. The class painting, sculpting, and drawing projects will be inspired by the pyramids, King Tut, hieroglyphs, animals, and amulets. These classes are broken into three groups by age ranging from ages 3-8, 6-10, and 9-12. To reserve your spot in these classes or for more information and costs (with all supplies provided), call Gallery on Main at 423-337-7400.

Understandably, that’s the question most frequently asked by our clients. The answer is yes. In fact, we’re so confident you’ll lose inches that you’ll pay nothing if your treatment doesn’t produce results. Here’s how the Strawberry procedure works. At the beginning of your first treatment, measurements are taken of your treatment area. Completely painless, the treatment requires only 20 minutes, during which time you can read, watch TV, or just relax. The unique Strawberry Laser works by safely expelling water, fatty acids, and glycerol from your fat cells, causing them to shrink and ultimately be carried out of your body in your urine. After your treatment, you can simply return to your normal activities. FDA approved, the Strawberry Laser will 28

accessory that can coordinate perfectly with our entire wardrobe, from evening gown to nightgown. Our hair is also an important component of our self-esteem and self-image. And because the condition of our hair can make the difference between self-confidence and self-consciousness, our hair, not unlike our wardrobe, can occasionally use a little help. In this case, an all-natural option that can make the difference between enjoying a night on the town or another night at home. Although introduced decades ago, hair extensions have evolved throughout the years. But the most significant advancement to date in the evolution of hair extensions was announced by Evolve, who recently introduced Evolve Extensions+. The truly revolutionary Evolve Extensions+ offers you the ease and speed of a tape-in, with no glue or adhesives, resulting in the look and feel of a strand by strand. Installed in 45 minutes to one hour, Evolve Extensions+ provides a more natural look that is non-invasive and will not cause damage to natural hair from chemicals, glues, adhesives, or heat. in many cities globally and to kick off their 2016 world tour, Shen Yun brings to life 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through classical Chinese dance and music in an exhilarating brand new show you will never forget. Shen Yun captures the spirit of a culture long lost. The show moves quickly through regions, dynasties, and legends. Ethnic and folk dances fill the stage with color and energy. Tremendous athleticism, thunderous battle drums, and masterful vocalists are all set to animated backdrops that transport you to another world. It is a grand production with nearly 100

artists, 400 costumes, and the only orchestra in the world masterfully blending two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions, Chinese and Western, into one glorious sound as permanent members. Shen Yun is the first company to present classical Chinese dance to the world on a large scale, and it has taken the globe by storm, performing in more than 100 cities. Shows in top venues, like New York’s Lincoln Center, are sold out. Every year Shen Yun Performing Arts unveils an entirely new lineup of dances, songs, and musical scores that offers an exhilarating world-class production on a grand scale. Think of it as a journey into a long-lost world you cannot see anywhere else – from

ancient legends and heavenly palaces to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom and modern-day human rights epics such as that of Falun Dafa. You cannot even find a show like this in China, where this ancient heritage has been destroyed. But now you can experience it live on stage. Find out why artists and theatergoers around the world are calling Shen Yun “breathtaking,” “mesmerizing,” “a miracle,” and “inspiring.” Allow yourself to be taken away to distant lands and ancient legends. See Shen Yun and discover how you, too, can be inspired. For more information, call 888-9743698 or visit www.ShenYun.com or www. tennesseetheatre.com.

GARAGE

F YOUR HOME’S GARAGE wasn’t

so visible, you could easily ignore its dull, gray, chipped, cracked, and oil-stained concrete floor. But it is. It’s right up front for everybody to see each and every time you open your garage door. Most homeowners investigate a variety of options to deal with their unsightly concrete garage floor. Perhaps you’ve tried cleaning or even painting your concrete. But if you’re like many homeowners, the paint you installed just one year ago has already begun to chip and peel. Some homeowners have purchased the decorative epoxy concrete coating available at the big box stores that are labeled “just like the professionals use.” But unfortunately, many of these same homeowners have discovered that not all coatings are created equal, as their coatings begin to lift or flake from their car’s tires. If you’re truly tired of your ugly concrete garage floor or other concrete surfaces – including walkways, concrete deck, and basement floors – but you want to avoid the DIY mistakes you’ve made in the past, I encourage you to call Revolution Concrete today. At Revolution Concrete, we use only the finest concrete floor coatings available – and not the coatings you’ll find at the big box stores. Our proprietary coatings combined with our state-of-the-art preparation and installation procedures will assure you of a level of quality that simply isn’t available anywhere else. From our decorative epoxy-based systems to our acid washed systems, Revolution Concrete will provide you with an attractive concrete surface that is affordable and that you can be proud of. How affordable? Probably a lot less than you’ll spend on your DIY alternative and the added cost of replacing it a year or two later. If one of your New Year’s resolutions includes enhancing the appearance of your home’s concrete surfaces, I encourage you to call Revolution Concrete today. You might even be tempted to leave your garage door open just a bit longer.

A Healthy New Year’s Resolution for Your Home WHAT RESOLUTIONS are you making for

the New Year? Are they to eat healthier, exercise more often, make wiser financial decisions, earn more income, or reduce potential health risks within your home? If one of your resolutions is to protect your family from potential health risks within your home, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can help. Not surprisingly, the quality of the air within your home can have a significant impact on your family’s health. There are many factors that can determine the quality of your indoor air, including the condition of your home’s carpeting, rugs, and upholstery. There are steps you can take on a regular basis, such as vacuuming, that will help improve indoor air quality. However, vacuuming has limitations, and only professional cleaning of these surfaces will deliver optimum results. The process of delivering optimum cleaning starts with the use of water. Sounds simple enough, but not if the carpet and rug cleaning company you select relies on ordinary tap water. You see, water is the universal solvent that’s used to remove soil and contaminants that can accumulate over time in carpeting, rugs, and upholstery. Pure, soft water is the only safe and proven method to remove these contaminants. Because untreated tap water contains chlorine, minerals, and silt, this untreated water can actually become the source of additional contaminants that remain after the cleaning is completed. Put another way, the water that you rely on to remove contaminants can actually add contaminants. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we only use water purified using Kinetico Aqua Clear Water Treatment Systems. Our purified water allows our technicians to clean your carpets, rugs, and upholstery more thoroughly, effectively, and efficiently. That’s because we remove contaminants that can negatively impact your indoor air quality and do not introduce new contaminants by using untreated tap water. And because your home’s Oriental rugs cannot be professionally cleaned using the same methods used for carpeting and upholstery cleaning, Superior offers homeowners their proprietary, multi-step cleaning process, which is performed in their state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing studio. This assures that your Oriental and area rugs are both thoroughly and safely cleaned. Be sure to ask about our free pickup and delivery service. Restrictions apply. Call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning today, and give your family the gift of healthy, clean air in 2016.

for what you might ask? How about those dirty, watermarked windows in your home that you and your family have been trying to look out of for the last several months? But isn’t it too cold to wash windows? It is if you’re the one doing the washing, but not if you’re an experienced window washer who safely works out-of-doors nearly every day of the year. The fact is, because of colder temperatures, we spend more time in our homes during the winter months than at any other time of year, often resulting in cabin fever. And looking out of those dirty and watermarked windows won’t likely improve your disposition. So here’s the perfect solution. Right now Fish Window Cleaning, a local, family owned company, is offering a 40% discount on window cleaning for residential customers for a limited time. Radon & Termites Are Around 24/7

R

ADON IS THE second leading cause

of lung cancer in the U.S., and most people have no idea they may be exposed to radon since you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it! January is National Radon Awareness Month, and the EPA and U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested. What’s different about Dayton’s as compared to do-it-yourself tests is that Dayton’s technicians perform radon services in compliance with the radon gas industry’s recommended practices. Testing for radon is an easy process, and any airborne threat is relatively simple to resolve if high levels of radon are detected. Test your house now and receive $25 OFF a professional radon test ($150 list price) and $50 OFF radon mitigation. Termites eat all day, every day! They like to hide in hard-to-find spots, such as behind walls or under flooring, causing unseen damage that can be very expensive to repair. Dayton’s termite inspections are FREE, and the sooner a problem is found, the sooner it can be fixed to prevent further destruction. Dayton’s also provides termite letters for home sales. New customers can receive $150 OFF a Termidor HP Injection Treatment System.

Now through February 2016, new customers can receive $150 OFF the latest technology for termite treatment – Termidor® HP Injection System. Inspections are FREE! Signs of a potential termite problem can be both on the interior and exterior of your home. Examples include mud tunnels on areas such as a home’s foundation, crawl space, windows, door frames, or exterior wood, as well as damaged wood that has grooves in it or appears to be buckling. Other services provided by Dayton’s include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control (rodents/ spiders/ants, etc.), carpenter bee control (Apr-Aug), mosquito treatment (May-Oct), bedbug elimination, VA/FHA termite inspections, fungicide/ moldicide treatments, and CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation.

The album’s 12 alloriginal bluegrass/Americana tracks were written by Sharp, Humphrey, Platt, and Guggino in varying degrees, including a few co-writes with fellow musicians such as Phil Barker of the Carolina bluegrass band Town Mountain. RADIO follows Steep Canyon Rangers’ 2013 release, Tell the Ones I Love, which Bluegrass Today praised as ‘’a great mixture of today’s bluegrass styles, excellent harmonies, and a few surprises – an excellent album.”

Make a New Year’s Resolution to Fully Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Spring

W

A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com

HILE HOMEOWNERS across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently installed grills, refrigerators, and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often prevent homeowners from fully enjoying their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote your outdoor living experience. They provide shade, allowing people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay.

Create a season of memorable out-of-door experiences with family and friends in 2016 with retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the available retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge your screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. Why not make a New Year’s resolution this year that your entire family can enjoy? Create a season of memorable out-of-door experiences with family and friends in 2016 with retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee. Clean, Refresh, and Seal Your Grout M

Y HUSBAND, John, some-

times cracks me up. I have never in my life paid any attention to the cleanliness of grout lines, and unless tile is really filthy, I tend not to notice. But I often catch John examining floors inconspicuously when we are out, and it makes me giggle. Unlike me, he loves a challenge, and for the past seven years, that challenge has been cleaning surfaces that home and business owners have all but given up on. Men love being the “hero,” and nothing makes John smile more than when a homeowner that had resolved themselves to ripping out their flooring changes their mind after he cleans. While many men come home and tell their wives about a day at the office, I am greeted with before and after pictures of floors, countertops, and driveways! I can honestly say that I have learned more about flooring than I ever dreamed possible. If we are ever fortunate enough to build our dream home, I can rest assured that John will know

exactly what type of floor to put in every room, as well as how to maintain it. If you own a tile and grout floor, you’ve probably learned that tile and grout cleaners and traditional cleaning methods can’t eliminate stubborn soil buildup located beneath the surface of your tiles or your grout lines. For years, I didn’t understand why mopping and scrubbing didn’t get results. Here’s a crash course on WHY your floors refuse to concede to your best cleaning efforts. Did you know that your tiles and the grout surrounding them are porous materials with millions of tiny pores that accumulate dirt and grime? As they are cleaned, only the top surface layer is exposed, and the very practice of mopping pushes the dirt already there deeper inside. So the more you clean, the dirtier your tile and grout looks. How’s that for frustrating? Getting these surfaces clean requires four components – heat, pressure, suction, and quality cleaning solution – to loosen the grip of deeply embedded soil. Once clean and sanitized,

Get Organized in the New Year ONE OF THE MOST

common New Year’s resolutions is to get the home more organized. Why? Research reveals that on average we waste almost 50 minutes a day looking for things we’ve misplaced. It clearly pays to get organized, because time is one commodity we can’t recover. However, getting organized can feel overwhelming. So here are some tips on getting started. Schedule the Time to Organize Plan this project like any other appointment. Write it on your calendar! If you don’t plan the time, it’s too easy to put it off until another time. Start Small Trying to organize your entire house in a week is very enthusiastic but unrealistic. Start with a space that’s an organizational priority, or simply choose one closet or even a drawer. Clear the Clutter In each room, remove items no longer needed. Place them in piles for donating, recycling, or tossing away. Then make a list of organizational items you need, such as additional shelving or cabinets in the laundry or children’s rooms. Straighten Up the Garage and Front Door Entry One of the most important areas of the

house to keep neat is the entrance to your home. If you always enter and exit through disorder, you’ll carry that clutter – emotionally and physically – into the rest of your home and out into the world. Having a clean entryway and garage flows into the rest of your home and life. Organize Your Closet Having an organized closet will save time getting dressed; on average, it will save 10 minutes each morning. To help you get organized, invite a friend over so it feels more celebratory as you decide what items to keep, donate, or toss. Then organize clothes by style, color, and season so everything can be seen at a glance. Add shelving so shoes can be easily seen. Install belt or scarf racks to end the search for disappearing accessories. If your closet is a wire system, consider investing in an affordable, custom-designed closet to maximize available space. A custom closet adds 30% more storage space than wire shelving or do-it-yourself kits. Stay Organized Keep everything in order by spending just 15 minutes a day de-cluttering. An organized home reduces stress by also de-cluttering your mind so you can focus on the important things in life.

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

AMERICAN BEECH IT’S NOT OFTEN a deciduous tree is

chosen as a plant of the month during winter. However, one of the true climactic tree species of our Eastern forests takes center stage: American Beech (Fagus grandifolia). The darkness of the summer forest has now given way, and light filters through bare stems. From great distances, you can see the American beech through the forest with its smooth-flat grey bark and wasted remnants of summer foliage. By all accounts, this is a joy-filled encounter when walking through the woods. Pre-settlement, the Eastern United States was filled with giant trees, and the American beech was one of the biggest. Some 300 years later, most of those trees are gone. I suspect that the first Europeans, having traveled from a nearly deforested continent, would have stood mouth agape at the sight of a beech rising more than 100 feet high and just as wide. It was quickly found by settlers that if beeches were located, good soil must be present. I’m sure many great trees were felled in the name of the plow and progress. As age sets in, a beech with a wide character will stretch its lower limbs out and then downward, often touching the ground and setting roots where they touch. Additionally, root-suckers can form into fine specimen trees over time. I’ve been lucky on a few occasions to stumble on a concentric circle of beeches created from

the secondary growth of a mother tree. It’s good to pause and think about the time it would have taken for this to happen – particularly if there is no longer a trace of the central-hub tree. The beech with its smooth bark has been known throughout history as a young man’s tablet. If a pocketknife was handy, and a big enough beech was present, it was often scarred with exploits of love or huntsmanship. Most famous for this is Daniel Boone, who allegedly commemorated successful bear hunts with such carvings. In the home landscape, a beech is rather dif-

ficult to transplant and has a reputation of not thriving in the urban environment. They prefer rich, well-drained soil in either sun or partial shade. Collecting seeds and directly sowing them outdoors or transplanting very small seedlings may give the best chance to those wishing to have a beech in their landscape. However, perhaps it is best to protect the areas where native beeches grow to ensure the next generation can enjoy their beauty. You can find American beech throughout the region. There is a nice specimen in the Native American Interpretive Garden on the UT Institute of Agriculture campus in Knoxville. At the UT Gardens, Jackson, there is one just northwest of the main parking lot near the oak tree collection. Andy Pulte is a public horticulture specialist in the University of Tennessee Department of Plant Sciences. He works closely with the staff of the UT Gardens. January in the Garden G

OODBYE 2015,

hello 2016! Time is flying by! Can you believe that Meadow View will turn 20 this year? I can’t. Actually, those early days are a blur, because when we opened, Rodney and I had a seven year old, twin four year olds, and a one year old. I don’t think I slept. It has been an interesting ride, but I am glad we are here. And I am glad that there are those of you who read this column every month and trust me to help you with your gardening. With that being said, here is your to-do list for January: » This is the time of year for dreaming. On wet and nasty days, look through magazines and seed catalogs and start planning the things you want to do in your yard. Please be aware, however, that some of those lovely photos were taken in other parts of the county. You may have to adapt those ideas to make them work here.

» Houseplants may need some attention this month. If your houseplants are showing their displeasure at the shorter days and dry indoor air, try a sunnier spot and a humidifier. If you don’t have a humidifier, try setting the pot in a tray of water that has decorative pebbles to keep the pot elevated. (You are trying to give them humidity, not drown them.) If they have gotten dusty, a sponge bath or rinse in the sink or shower will clean out their pores. Check the soil and make sure you aren’t over or under watering. They may be drinking less this time of year, so adjust your water schedule. If you hate sticking your finger in the soil, get a water meter. We have some that remain in the planter and blink when the soil is dry. » Give tools a good cleaning, oiling, and sharpening. This will get you ready for action when planning and/or pruning time arrives.

WINTER IS FOR DREAMING. LET US HELP MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!

» Seeds can be started indoors for annuals, perennials, and herbs. You need a sunny window for this, or you will need to supplement the light. Fluorescent lights (including CFLs) work nicely and should be placed 1-2” from plants for best results. There are handy little greenhouse kits, or you can use small pots or trays. You can even use egg cartons! Now for the outside chores: » Have some of your trees shed more leaves since you last cleaned up? Bradford Pears and others are notorious for holding on to their foliage. Get heavy layers off your lawn or shred them with your lawnmower and use as mulch. » Speaking of mulch, do you still have a good layer, or did the rains wash it all away? If you have naked soil, it is a good idea to apply more. Mulch protects your plants and keeps soil temperature and moisture levels stable. Three inches is all the plants need, however! More is unnecessary and may cause crown rot of perennials or side root growth on trees. » Don’t let your weed situation get out of hand. Henbit, chickweed, pop weed, and green onions are not stopped by winter weather. Weeding is also a great antidote for cabin fever! A pre-emergent, such as Preen, will help stop more weed seeds from germinating if applied on a regular basis. » We have had an abundance of rainfall so far, but pay attention to the rainfall levels throughout the winter. If we are not getting 1” per week, newly planted shrubs may need water. Check the soil if you are not sure. » Let’s talk about a subject that gets so many people in trouble: Pruning. Late January is a great time to prune summer flowering shrubs such as roses, butterfly bushes, and crepe myrtles, but don’t go crazy! Branches don’t go back on. We are planning a pruning workshop in February, and some of you really should attend. What you do to your plants is painful. Also, do not prune anything that blooms in the spring, Hydrangea macrophylla (the ones that bloom pink or blue), or Oakleaf Hydrangeas. In fact, just call us before you prune anything! » Don’t forget the birds. Natural food supplies will soon run low, so keep feeders and baths clean and full. Never allow mold to grow in your bird feeder, because it is toxic to the birds. That’s all for this month. Keep warm, and we hope to see you soon. Happy New Year!

Easy, Affordable Home Winterization Ideas with

BIG Impact 1. Seal gaps and cracks The average midsize U.S. home has a half mile of gaps and cracks according to www.energystar.gov. Cold air infiltrates through those spaces, causing your furnace to work overtime. An easy way to combat the problem is to use Great Stuff™ Gaps & Cracks to fill openings around electrical outlets, plumbing pipes, doors, dryer vents, and more. Sealing your home takes just a few hours whether you do it yourself or work with a contractor. Visit www.dowgreatstuff. com/winterize to learn more.

A

LTHOUGH YOU MAY prefer to forget, last win-

ter’s subfreezing temperatures may not be an isolated occurrence. Weather experts are already discussing if El Nino and arctic air from a polar vortex will cause colder than normal winter weather throughout the country. Is your home ready to withstand the chill? Smart homeowners are taking time now to prepare their homes for the harsh weather. Winterizing not only helps maintain comfortable temperatures inside, but it also helps lower your energy bill. Fortunately, some of the improvements that have the biggest impact are also easy to do and surprisingly affordable.

2. Reverse fan blades Your ceiling fans aren’t just valuable during summer – they can help reduce energy costs by circulating warm air that rises to the top of rooms. To ensure your fan is circulating the air correctly, you need to reverse the blades. Most modern ceiling fans have a handy switch that controls the blade direction. During the winter, set the blades to spin clockwise to help warm rooms and set to counterclockwise during summer for cooling breezes.

4. Install an adjustable thermostat An adjustable thermostat is an effective tool for maintaining a comfortably warm home and cutting heating costs. If you have one but don’t have it set, now is the time to learn how. By adjusting the temperature down while you’re sleeping or away, you can save plenty of money. In fact, by turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours, you can save 5-15% a year on your heating bill, according to www.energy.gov.

3. Eliminate drafty windows Have you ever felt a draft as you walked by your window? Gaps around windows are a major source of heat loss. Seal out those drafts with Great Stuff™ Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant. This specially formulated low-pressure sealant is easy to apply and insulates the window without bending the frame when properly applied. Another great tip is to open the curtains during the daylight hours on south-facing windows so the sun can help heat your home naturally. Close curtains when the sun sets to reduce the chill.

5. Tune up your furnace If meteorologists’ predictions are correct, your furnace will be working hard this winter. Make sure it is working effectively and efficiently by scheduling a tune-up now. A qualified technician will check the coils and clean and lubricate important mechanical parts. Some utility companies offer free checkups to customers, so be sure to ask about your options. In addition to a tune-up, remember to change your furnace filter once a month during the heating season to maintain proper air flow.

Sevierville’s New Salem Church is a Treasure Worth Saving L

OCATED IN A BEND of Middle

Creek along East Gate Road, the humble, picturesque New Salem Church is Sevierville’s oldest surviving public building and the only historic AfricanAmerican church in the county. Like the congregations who worshiped there, the old building has weathered many storms. For generations, sounds of haunting spirituals flowed from the open windows as “Amen” echoed in unison from the pews. About 20 years after the Civil War ended, Robert S. Henderson donated the land for the church and allowed the use of an adjoining field to build a kiln in which to fire the bricks for the facade. Although the property was in a flood plain, the black community was elated to have a place in which to erect their own church. Built in 1886, the Gothic Revival-style church was the first of many brick buildings to be constructed by the talented brick masons of Sevier County. This group was led by Isaac Dockery, who had been making bricks and building brick buildings for several years. Dockery taught the trade to Paris Witt McMahan, his son-in-law, who also became an accomplished brick mason. Dockery and McMahan were accompanied by an extremely talented African-American carpenter named Lewis Buckner, who also made cabinets and furniture. Dockery made bricks for many buildings in Sevierville, including the Italianate-style Murphy College, which was completed in 1891, the Italianate-style Masonic Lodge built in 1893, and the Beaux Arts classical-style Sevier County Courthouse completed in 1896. Originally built as a Union Church for people of all races and of all beliefs, it was completed with the assistance of the entire African–American community. The small but well-detailed church exhibits triangulararched windows, and the main entrance is a projecting central entry bay that originally supported a frame tower. The bricks used in the building are said to weigh around three pounds each. The building was operated as a Union Church until 1897, when it was renamed New Salem Baptist Church. During the early years of the church, some of the members formed a singing group to raise money. These singers would travel throughout the area to entertain religious and civic groups. The money they 56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2016

raised was used to purchase a piano, hymn books, and Sunday school literature. When the church was built, the black community did not have an ordained clergy living near the church. The first ministers to preach to the little congregation were Caucasian circuit riders. It was around 1920 when black ministers from surroundings counties began ministering the flock. Since they had their own churches, the visiting ministers could only commit to preaching one Sunday afternoon per month. The church served the black community until the 1950s, when the last services were held by the descendants of the original congregation. Since that time, the church has been used by other congregations, and the historic integrity has slowly chipped away. The original bell tower and pulpit furniture have been removed, and the overall interior has been altered significantly. Even with these changes, the church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, and a Tennessee Historical marker was placed on the grounds in 2006. The building suffers from lack of maintenance and ventilation issues, which are compromising the structure. In 2010, the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance placed the building on the list of East Tennessee’s most endangered treasures. The Dockery family has had its reunion in Sevierville every summer since 1972

and gathers by the hundreds on the church grounds for a picnic. The New Salem Restoration Task Force, who is spearheading the effort to preserve the historic structure, has posted a thermometer in the church’s front yard, with lines marking the steps to their goal of $500,000. The East Tennessee Community Design Center has prepared a design of what a restoration might involve. “We are going to be able to save it,” says Alverrene Bridgeforth, chairman of the restoration committee. “We would be remiss if we just let it go. I think we should really protect it. God is good. I know there will be provision for this.”

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Are Hidden Fees Hurting Your Investment Returns? A RECENT TV COMMERCIAL caught

my eye where a young son asks his dad how his investment advisor gets paid, and the dad admits he doesn’t know. The truth is, it’s difficult to know! So what is an investor to do? Research your current investments, and know what questions to ask. Here are a few tips: » For mutual funds, know what share class you own. Look at your statement and Yvonne Marsh, CPA see what it says: CL A, CL B, CL C, or CL I after the mutual fund name. This Class letter is how your broker gets paid – whether it’s a front-end purchase load (A share), a back-end sales load (B), or a C Share with no load but a higher, ongoing fee. Loads can range from 3% to 5.75%, so it’s important to know which ones you have. Class I shares, used by flat-fee based advisors, don’t have loads. » Know what 12b-1 marketing fee you’re paying. Look up your mutual fund on an independent site, such as Morningstar. Depending on your Class A, B, or C, it can range from .25% to 1.25%. Class I shares don’t charge 12b-1 fees. » While you’re looking at your 12b-1 expense on Morningstar, also take note of the “expense ratio.” That’s an operating expense charge and netted against the investment return. Investing in low cost funds should be an important part of your strategy. » Look at the Schedule D on your tax return. How much capital gains and losses is your advisor creating? If your broker is actively trading your account, it can really hit home at tax time. Taxmanaged mutual funds are an important part of an effective investment strategy. The adage “It’s not what you earn, it’s what you keep” is very true. Lastly, know whether your advisor works through a broker or registered investment advisor (RIA). Brokers are paid through commissions, loads, and 12b-1 fees. RIAs are paid an investment advisory fee based on your portfolio assets and don’t receive loads, commissions, or 12b-1 fees. A bit confusing? Call today to set up your complimentary consultation, or bring a friend and join us at our next Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern to learn more.

HE INTERVIEWS that grace this

magazine are normally of iconic, legendary, or up-and-coming artists. Big names, so to speak. This month you are going to learn about a talent well before the rest of the world is turned on to him. His name is Austin Crum, and believe me when I say that this 16 year old guitar prodigy is definitely the next Stevie Ray Vaughan or Joe Bonamassa. Rock. Blues. Country. You name it, Austin nails it. Born to Gina and Chad Crum and raised in Newport, Austin literally cut his teeth on the guitar. To hear Austin’s parents tell it, they discovered that their son was gifted on the guitar at a very early age. “We knew he had talent when he was a baby,” said Chad. “He could keep rhythm,” added Gina. “Yes, he had a little toy guitar. I’m talking little bitty. He was probably one. We gave him a pick, and he would play along.” “He always carried a pick,” agreed Chad. “When we would get ready to go to church, he would make sure that he had a pick in his little pocket when he was old enough to walk around. We have a lot of music at our church. Austin would watch the guitar player, and he would actually have his pick. We’d be singing in the choir, and he would be over there playing the guitar player’s licks.” I asked the Crums if they thought that prenatal learning factors into Austin’s talent. They said that it might have been due to listening to a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan while Austin was in the womb. “Every time that I was in the car when Gina was pregnant, I was really, really hard core into Stevie,” said Chad. “I bought all of his records and went back – even to his earlier stuff. I went back to Texas Flood. I just couldn’t get enough of it. But it all started with wrestling and Austin. He got RSV when he was three weeks old and really sickly. When he had trouble sleeping at night, we would put Pride and Joy on headphones and he would go out just like a light. It’s truly his favorite song. I don’t know. I guess only God knows if that had anything to do with it.” Austin shared with me his earliest memories with the guitar. “Well, everybody in the family plays,” he said. “My cousins, Matthew and Steve, play. I watched them growing up. I learned a lot of stuff from them and just kinda built on it. That’s basically it.” Austin couldn’t remember the first song that he learned, but his proud momma, Gina, knew. “Folson Prison Blues,” she said. “That was the first song you ever performed somewhere besides in church. And, you played it on a flat top.” And Austin’s first gig? “We had kind of a talent show thing at school,” said Austin. “We did Folsom Prison, 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2016

Austin Crum and Family

and my dad played bass, I played guitar, and my granddaddy – he sings bass in church – sung Johnny’s part on Folsom Prison. That’s probably the first thing we’d ever done out in front of many people like that.” As to whether his peers are supportive or derisive, Austin said, “They treat me really good, actually. They think it’s cool that I can play. They ask me to play. We have some guitars in the back of the chorus building. They tell me to get one out and play something. I mean, they’re actually pretty supportive about it.” I asked Austin who his biggest influences were on the guitar. “I’d have to give it to Stevie,” he said. “I mean, I’m straying into different kinds of music now, but he’s the one who started it.”

As we kibitzed about SRV, Chad added this little morsel of trivia. “Austin actually got to share the stage with SRV’s keyboard player, Reese Wynans. You couldn’t have washed that smile off of Austin’s face. Austin was sitting in with Whitey Johnson at Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar in Nashville. It sounds awful, but it’s a family atmosphere. He shared the stage with Whitey Johnson, and Reese was sitting in with Whitey. Austin came off stage, and I remember him telling us, ‘Man, that was such a weird feeling to look over at Reese and nodding off to him like, ‘Go ahead, Reese, take that.’” East Tennessee has produced a lot of amazing, world-renowned talent. Mark my words: Austin Crum will be known as one of them. Because of that, I suspect that Austin will be nodding to many more great musicians in the future. The Knoxville Museum of Art Presents

The Knoxville 7 An Exhibition Dedicated to the History and Legacy of Seven Groundbreaking Mid-Century Artists January 29–April 17

T

HE KNOXVILLE Museum of Art

is proud to present the first-ever exhibition dedicated to the history and legacy of the groundbreaking artists who worked and exhibited together in the ‘50s and ‘60s and eventually became known as The Knoxville 7. The KMA-organized exhibition, on view from January 29 through April 17, features more than 60 works culled from the museum’s extensive holdings, augmented by loans from collectors around the region. The brash, ambitious artists who exhibited together as The Knoxville 7 shared the common visual language of Abstract Expressionism, producing what are likely the first abstract art works in East Tennessee and establishing a foothold for modern art in the region. In the early 1950s, C. Kermit “Buck” Ewing, first head of the University of Tennessee’s art department, recruited a group of young artists – initially Carl Sublett, Walter Stevens, and Robert Birdwell – who exhibited actively in Knoxville and throughout the Southeast. While Sublett and Stevens shared an exclusive interest in the landscape as a point of reference for their abstractions, Birdwell and Ewing often found inspiration in urban settings and the human figure. Sometimes they exhibited as a foursome and other times as The Knoxville 7 with fellow artists Joanna Higgs Ross, Richard Clarke, and Philip Nichols. This important

The opening for the exhibition is Thursday, January 28, from 6 to 8 pm with a short program at 6:45 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

has high hopes for Inskip Elementary, the newest Knox County school to join the University of Tennessee’s University-Assisted Community Schools initiative. The initiative creates learning opportunities for students in highneeds elementary schools by providing a nurturing environment supported by caring members of the community, including family, staff, and volunteers. Pond Gap Elementary adopted the program in 2010, and now Inskip Elementary hopes to follow in its footsteps. “I started the concept here in 1998,” said Bob, a professor of educational psychology counseling in UT’s College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. “Others were doing it elsewhere, but I did not know them at the time. The theory is mine. Blenza Davis at Sarah Moore Greene was the first principal to get it. Shelly McGill at Pond Gap now has it as well.” Bob has been at UTK for 44 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tampa, his master’s from Appalachian State University, and his Ph.D. from the University

of Tennessee. According to Bob, the initiative significantly reduces absences, tardies, and behavioral referrals. “Math scores are up,” he said. “We are working hard on reading. I have high hopes for Inskip. The issue of poverty is a big one but not an excuse for not being able to teach. At Inskip, we will focus on non-academic issues as a one-stop shop along with academics. We need to focus more on neighborhoods where the schools are. If you have challenged schools, you have challenged neighborhoods.” As with many initiatives in education, funding is a major challenge, but several organizations have stepped up to help.

“We have received awards and gifts from United Way, Radio Systems, The Shelton Foundation of Raleigh, and The Siddiqui Foundation,” said Bob. “Our garden program is another exciting program. We feed a lot of folks with this garden. Annie Gray of Pellissippi State is the brains behind this. I hope you can see that the key here is collaboration.” The fruits of the initiative can be seen all through the schools, and not just in the classroom – students are having fun in extracurricular activities such as chorus and physical education as well. “The children are fantastic,” said Bob. “It’s all fun.”

Set Your Own Trends in the New Year

H

ERE’S A NEW resolution for you

to consider for 2016: “Set your own trends.” Every small business owner knows that historical trends are an undeniable fact of life in the marketplace. In business, you will often experience both seasonal and holiday trends, which would be foolish to ignore. But it would be equally as foolish to assume that you can’t influence these trends or even create some new trends of your own. The ability to maneuver beyond existing seasonal, holiday, and industry trends is the hallmark of a successful entrepreneur. Many retail store owners experience a much anticipated lull in sales after the holidays. So how about introducing a New Year’s Sale, an Inventory Clearance Sale, or After-the-Holidays Sales sale? I’ve seen clients initiate a wide range of innovative new ideas, including Christmas in July sale events, trunk shows, learning events, and fashion shows, all with the ultimate goal of increasing their sales. Unwilling to accept the inevitable seasonal declines in sales, they pushed forward with their own ideas on how

Business

I’ve seen clients initiate a wide range of innovative new ideas, including Christmas in July sale events, trunk shows, learning events, and fashion shows, all with the ultimate goal of increasing their sales. to overcome these historical trends. That’s not to say that each new idea will succeed. It won’t. But I’ve personally witnessed some incredible successes by a variety of entrepreneurs who themselves were pleasantly surprised by the results that they were able to produce. In fact, several of these successes were not new ideas at all. Some of them had been tried unsuccessfully by their competition. The difference was that some business owners quit prematurely on what might have otherwise been a great idea, whereas others exhibited a level of “stick-to-itive-ness” that ultimately resulted in success. Do these new trend busting ideas mean that you double your January sales from last

year? Not necessarily. But could you live with a 20% increase in sales over last year’s results? To successfully establish new trends, you can’t be afraid to risk failure. One business owner, disappointed by the poor attendance at their learning seminars, contemplated dropping them altogether. But perseverance prevailed, and now they routinely host 40 to 60 people at these very successful seminars. Why not make a resolution in 2016 to buck the trends? Survey your competitive landscape in search of innovative new ideas that could result in increased sales for your small business in the New Year. What do you have to lose?

When It Rains... SMALL BUSINESS

is not for the faint of heart. While creative minds churn innovative ideas, few people back ideas with strategies that work. Marketing plans and advertising schedules are important, but one key strategy is planning for that rainy day when discouragement can set in. Any business has difficult days, and that is especially daunting for small businesses because there are fewer people in place to pick up any slack. Entrepreneurs can’t just turn problems over to others. We must be able to face issues head on and deal with them while not losing ground while getting the work done required for success. Dealing with discouragement must be part of your strategy. As small businesspeople, we are at our best when dealing with the positive aspects of running our business. Signing deals, successful promotions, and building relationships are right up our alley. Right brain thinkers love the exciting momentum. Fist pumps come natural on days filled with activity. Yet those of us who experience long-term success are the ones who recognize problems and give the problems adequate attention. While problem solving may not fall in our

comfort zone, we must admit when we need help along the way. » Don’t pretend. When in a season of discouragement, see it as an opportunity. In those seasons, catchy phrases or self -help articles don’t work for long. We must go through them to get through them. That means really go through them and getting to the other side. Struggle. Wrestle. Pray. Work. Envision. Dream. Create. » Find solutions. Find actual answers to questions. Don’t let problems linger, and for heaven’s sake, don’t pretend there are none. Hope is not a strategy. Great leaders are not afraid of setbacks. That’s part of business and often where we grow the most. Finding solutions to problems is a necessary part of building on a solid foundation that is unshakable over time. » Seek experts. Vitally important to any business are those who can help. Seek others who are successful: Coaches, counselors, mentors, pastors, friends, advisors. A sign of strength is reaching for help when needed. Great leaders tap into others and surround themselves with strong people. » Move forward. There are peaks and

valleys. One day may be up, the next down. We must put on our hiking shoes and take each step. Learning from problems that arise is how we become better, more solvent, and better prepared for uncertain times. It’s been said that it’s lonely at the top. That is not true! There are many people at the top. Each year many businesses start and succeed. As small business people, we have to navigate environments so we’re not isolated. We need synergy; we need excitement and strength in mentor relationships. The opportunity to learn from others in growth saturated environments can be the key to mastering the mental challenge on difficult days. There are rainy days in business. Discouragement is inevitable. Grow through it – tomorrow is a new day! Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Family Life

Family Resolutions for the New Year IT IS EASY

to give up on New Year’s resolutions when your world revolves around taking care of others. This year try something different. Make New Year’s resolutions as a family this year. They will be easier to stick to when your entire household is involved. Here are some resolutions to consider that can benefit your entire family. Unplug – Spend at least one day a week, or at least one day per month, completely unplugged from all electronics. This includes televisions, computers, and cell phones. Spend a day without gadgets and do something instead such as being outdoors, playing board games, reading, or other things that would be of interest to you and your family. Eat healthier – It is easy to fall off the healthy eating resolution wagon when you go it alone. By committing the entire family to

eating healthier, it will be easier to avoid the fall. Commit to healthier eating habits and to involving your children in the kitchen. Make meal time fun, and if you have picky eaters, find unique and fun ways to get those veggies into your meals. Get moving – We live in a sedentary society, and New Year’s resolutions to exercise regularly quickly fade. Instead of looking at it as exercise, make a resolution that you and your family will simply get up and get moving. Ride bikes, walk the mall or local trails, play ball, dance, roller skate, jump rope, play hopscotch, and do other things that get you and your family off the couch and moving. Read – When was the last time your family took a trip to the public library or cracked open a book simply for fun? Make this year the year that you and your family read more. There are reading lists for all ages and interests. Show your children that great stories can be discovered outside of television and

DVDs. Go on dates – This resolution is for mom and dad. It is important that parents have a date night at least once a month. The occasional night out away from home and children will help to keep you and your partner connected. It can also go far in helping to keep the romance in your relationship alive. It’s never too late to set resolutions for you and your family. Use these or others that would benefit you and yours. If you find your family falling off the wagon, simply begin again. Don’t be afraid to change up or tweak your resolutions as the year goes along. The main thing is that you set goals as a family and stick to them as best you can. Want Healthier, Happier Children? Sit Down at the Table

H

APPY NEW YEAR! Here we go

again... a new year, new beginnings, new goals, and a fresh start. In this short article, I don’t have the space to list all the statistics, so I want to encourage you to Google them. (Yes, I know it’s lazy journalism.) The statistics I’m referring to are all of the ones that show the positive impact sitting down with your family at least three times per week around the dinner table has on your family. However, please allow me to summarize some of the benefits that I’ve read about in recent reports. Eating together at the dinner table with your family: » Reduces stress in the home » Reduces likelihood of depression, thoughts of suicide, and eating disorders » Increases chances of healthier eating » Is overall less expensive than eating outside the home 66

» Increases reports from children that they have a close relationship with their family members » Increases reports from children that their parents are proud of them I could include many more reports and surveys that have such positive results from families simply taking the time to sit down together, without distractions, and converse and share a meal. Parents, I know you want the same thing I want. We want our children to be happy, to feel loved, and to feel appreciated. We want our children to have a sense of belonging and support so they will have the confidence to face their own challenges with hope and persistence. We know that our world seems more hectic every day, and if we do not make this a priority, then we will never have the time. We must literally schedule family dinner time and make sure that the whole family knows it’s on the schedule and plans around this essential time. To sit across from our children and look them in the eye and discuss our day, including the good and the bad, is rewarding, comforting, and so important. There is nothing

more important. I had a mom recently tell me, “Monica, if I could do it all over again, I would have said ‘no’ to the travel teams. I would not feel like my child had to be involved in every activity to be accepted. I would have just slowed down and made sure my family spent more time together.” Parents, I’m not saying your children shouldn’t be involved in activities, on teams, and a part of great programs. I just don’t want any of us to underestimate the power and benefits that come from keeping our family time a priority and making sure that family time is on the schedule each week, just like all the other things on our schedules. If we want to raise confident, happy, and well-adjusted children, we must make spending time with our children our highest priority.

Acne: Clarity For Teens H

IGH SCHOOL can be the best time of a child’s life. In the

classroom, on the stage, or on the field – there are plenty of opportunities to develop new interests, spend time with friends, and make lasting memories. However, many students struggle to enjoy these moments, because they’re worried about how they look due to the outbreak of acne. Clear skin is often a challenge for students, but the doctor and specialists at Southeastern Dermatology offer many services to help teens overcome acne and reveal a confident, beautiful face. While acne is predominantly a disease of adolescence, it often persists into adulthood. It is important to treat significant acne to prevent emotional as well as physical scars.

Matthew B. Doppelt, D.O. Board Certified Dermatologist What causes acne? There are many contributing factors that cause acne, including bacteria, hormones, inflammation, and clogged pores. Excess oil production, which is often the result of hormonal stimulation, combines with naturally occurring bacteria, resulting in inflammation that can clog the pores. The end result of this process is the eruption of a blemish. Types of acne When most people think of acne, they think of big red pimples. However, there are several types of blemishes that a person with acne may have to address, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, and cysts/nodules. Each of these kinds of blemishes responds differently to various treatments; therefore, it’s important to work with a trained specialist in order to properly address your acne situation. Acne treatment There are several approaches to treating acne. The one that’s recommended to you, or to your child, will depend on his/her unique situation. However, there are some common treatments: » Topical treatments: Topical acne treatments are those preparations that are applied to the skin. They may be in the form of a special wash, cream, or gel. They may work to kill bacteria, decrease the inflammation, or to dry the excess oil. Common topical treatments include benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, retinoids, and salicylic acid. » Oral medications: Some acne cases require medication delivered in the form of a pill. For example, antibiotics can eliminate bacteria and minimize inflammation, while other medications work to balance hormones within the body. » Dermatology procedures: There are several dermatology procedures that can also help to clear up the individual’s skin. For example, a specialized chemical peel can remove the top layer of badly damaged skin while reducing oil and improving the skin’s appearance. These peels are safe and effective for use on teens and young adults. Photomodulation, also known as light treatments, may help as well. Something to keep in mind: Unlike what you may see on TV infomercials, results take time. These commercials do a disservice in that they promote unrealistic expectations. If your acne is severe or not responding to over-the-counter remedies, call board certified dermatologist, Dr. Matthew Doppelt, at Southeastern Dermatology today to schedule your appointment.
