Buying and selling real estate in today's marketplace requires the experience and skill levels of a professional Realtor®. Meet Tiffany Dorn of Tiffany Dorn & Associates at Keller Williams Realty, a 2014 top 1% sales leader and award winner who embraces a multi-tiered marketing strategy to help sell a home in the shortest time and at the highest possible price.

From the Publisher HERE WE ARE in the midst of the

summer season. It’s time to plan for backyard picnics, lazy days on the lake, hikes in the mountains, and the family vacation. Friends and relatives might consider visiting East Tennessee for their summer fun too, so you may be considering hosting your summer guests in your home. If your home is not “guest” ready, now might be the right time to do the renovation needed. Tom and I have been doing a lot of renovation, which can be challenging at times. Finding the right contractors to do the job right is even more challenging. We have had great contractors for the most part, but every now and then, we come up against roadblocks that hinder our renovation plans and delay completion of a project. We are going through that right now, but when all is done, I know the memories of the challenges will fade and we will enjoy our room. 4

865.671.3888 • www.gallaherplasticsurgery.com What Are the #1 Cosmetic Procedures Across the Country? BREAST AUGMENTATION Breast augmentation is the number one cosmetic procedure across the country. Many people are choosing breast augmentation, whether it be due to small breasts (enlargement), deflation from nursing and aging, or a wish for enhancement. There are many choices such as size, contour, projection, and type of implant. It is important to choose a surgeon that takes your goals and needs and develops a beautiful, natural outcome. Trusting your care to an experienced surgeon, such as Dr. Tom Gallaher or Dr. Daniel Fowler, is an important choice.

BOTOX When we squint or frown, we develop lines between the eyes and at the corners of the eyes (crows feet). Botox Cosmetic is FDA approved to diminish the furrow or fold that has developed over time. It is a simple, non-surgical treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe lines on the forehead, brows, and crows feet. In addition, it can be used in areas on the lower face, forehead, neck, lips, or excessive sweating. With all procedures, there can be complications, so make sure you’re with an experienced provider, such as Donna Cress, NP, and Brooke Nix, PA, before trying Botox. With breast augmentation, we are offering 20 units of complimentary Botox after your surgery. Not only that, but you can refer a friend and she/he can also receive 20 units of Botox. Also, if you are a Brilliant Distinctions member, you receive 500 points ($50) Before After (Day 7) to use toward any injectables and products.

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Tom Gallaher or Dr. Daniel Fowler and see if breast augmentation and/or Botox is right for you.

KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY

“The Art of Success in Real Estate”

M

ORE OF an art than a science, most of us

will have multiple experiences with Realtors® during our lifetimes; experiences that will likely vary as widely as the personalities and skills of the individual Realtors® we encounter. But one thing is certain – buying and selling real estate in today’s marketplace is very much different than it was just a decade ago. The experience and skill levels required to achieve a successful real estate experience today are much more demanding than at any other time in our recent past. In this issue, we are especially excited to be introducing our readers to Realtor® Tiffany Dorn of Tiffany Dorn & Associates at Keller Williams Realty, the top 1% real estate team with 71 transactions in 2014, a level almost exceeded as of June of this year. We will ask Tiffany to share with our readers some of her strategies for achieving a successful real estate experience for both buyers and sellers. EK: First of all, congratulations for your success as a top 1% sales leader in 2014 and being selected as a Zillow 5-Star Premier Agent and receiving a 2014 Trulia Top Agent Award. It’s also our understanding that you have almost exceeded your total 2014 sales achievement in just the first six months of 2015. So I guess this is a great opportunity to ask you to describe our current residential real estate conditions. Tiffany: Homes “priced right” are selling at the highest level since 2008, buyer demand is extremely strong, and there are inventory shortages. Homeowners looking to sell are definitely in the driver’s seat, as there are more buyers competing for the limited number of homes available for sale. In addition, we’re receiving multiple offers on our listings within days of hitting the MLS more and more frequently. With interest rates at a historical low, it’s a great time to buy, especially if you’re currently renting. EK: You embrace a multi-tiered marketing strategy, including a customized marketing plan, professional photography, virtual tours, professional staging consultations, and social media, to help your sellers sell their homes in the shortest time possible at the highest possible price. Why do you feel that this strategy has been so successful? Tiffany: You only have one chance to make a great first impression, so that’s why each home we market includes a professional staging consultation and professional photography. Not only do homes sell faster when professionally photographed, but they also sell for a higher price in my experience. Each home has a unique story to tell, and we build our comprehensive custom marketing strategy around that. EK: Provided at no cost to your clients, why do you believe that professional photography and staging consultations have been so important to your success as a Realtor®? Tiffany: Buying or selling real estate is the largest transaction a person will ever make, so my number one goal always is to sell every client’s home for the highest 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2015

Mark and Tiffany Dorn

possible price in the shortest time possible. I’m always willing to invest in any tool that will enhance our clients’ potential for success in today’s market, and professional staging consultations and professional photography are two excellent tools that clearly make an impact when marketing a home. EK: The number one complaint we hear from sellers is the lack of communication from their Realtor®. How have you been able to overcome that obstacle? Tiffany: Several years ago we implemented a system where my specialized team regularly communicates with seller clients on a weekly basis and consistently delivers the highest standard of service. The ultimate goal is to “wow” clients throughout the process and always maintain a strong sense of continuity with a primary point of contact. Once the transaction closes, we always ask for feedback, and the system serves our clients quite well. More than half of our business is generated from our wonderful past clients, and we’re very thankful for that. EK: We hear that 70%+ of all real estate inquiries begin online. How do you use today’s social media to successfully differentiate your clients’ properties? Tiffany: That’s correct; most consumers today begin their home search online. Social media specifically has enabled our team to get the word out on listings quicker and in a more targeted manner. We have a dedicated team member that specializes in the marketing of all our clients’ listings. Once the client agreement is signed, our marketing system initiates a “Coming Soon” campaign utilizing a variety of mediums. The listing then goes live on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and is broadcasted to 300+ websites, including all social media platforms. Further, we create a customized social media marketing plan for each property that covers Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc. Additionally, we leverage our state-of-the-art website platform, www. TiffanyDorn.com, to market all of our client listings to our vast database. EK: What most of our readers may be unaware of is that your husband, Mark, a bilingual commercial Realtor® at Keller Williams Realty as well, and yourself are both

involved in a very special program honoring our hometown heroes called Homes for Heroes®. Tell us a little bit about this program and how it benefits our community. Tiffany: Homes for Heroes® is a wonderful program that allows our team to give back a portion of our real estate commissions to those who serve our community when buying or selling real estate. Since 2001, Homes for Heroes® has given back more than $9,000,000 nationally to our heroes. We’re excited to be the exclusive real estate team representing Homes for Heroes in the Greater Knoxville Area and to have already given back almost $15,000 in 2015 to our local heroes.

This program was created after the tragic events of 9/11 as a thank you to the men and women who have given so much. The mission is to provide extraordinary savings, through discounts, on important real estate related services to local heroes who provide extraordinary services to our community every day. Heroes include firefighters, emergency medical professionals, active duty military and veterans, law enforcement, teachers, and healthcare workers. Heroes can learn more or sign up at www. HomesforHeroes.com and will then be contacted within 48 hours. EK: Let us ask you to gaze into your crystal ball for a moment. How does the residential real estate marketplace look for the immediate future? Tiffany: Homes priced right and in good condition will likely continue to sell quickly (less than 90 days). I anticipate that buyer demand will remain strong and that inventory will remain tight during the remainder of 2015. Homeowners looking to sell will remain

in the driver’s seat, but interest rates will likely begin to rise. This is a great time for first-time homebuyers and those who may currently be renting to strongly consider the dream of homeownership. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Also, tell our readers how they can contact you if they would like to learn more about Tiffany Dorn & Associates at Keller Williams Realty. Ti f f a n y : There are very few career opportunities that allow a professional to help another family to achieve their dreams. It has been an absolute privilege to be a part of this experience with more than 250 clients whose dreams have been achieved. I recognize that it’s often a temptation to hire someone that you know who has a real estate license, but please remember that they may not always be the best Realtor® to represent your interests. Think of a real estate transaction as the most important business decision that you’re likely to make in your lifetime. Why not choose a professional with a proven track record for success? Your friend could turn out to be the right agent for your needs. But remember that if you should discover later that they’re not the right person, it could place an enormous stress on your personal relationship with that individual. Before you make a choice, I encourage you to take the time necessary to ask for agent recommendations from homeowners who have recently bought or sold a home, and then interview several agents before making a final decision. You’ll be spending time with your agent and relying on their professional advice to help you buy or sell your home for the best possible price and as quickly as possible. I would like to invite all of your readers to learn more at www.TiffanyDorn.com, or please read through our many client 5-Star Zillow Reviews at www.Zillow.com.

Dear Patient, It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I write this letter to let you know that the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine has moved 1.3 miles to a brand new, state-of-the-art facility as of June 1st. Since its founding 15 years ago, I have strived to provide the highest level of subspecialty urogynecologic care in the region. We are expanding into a beautifully appointed and expertly designed center typical of “concierge level practices found in major metropolitan cities, while still providing care to our standard insurance and Medicare patients as we always have. Our entire patient support team shares my passion and genuine concern for the well-being of our patients, and this will be evident not only during your patient visit, but regarding your needs and desires between visits. I am also proud to announce that Lionel McCollum, MD, has joined me at the Institute and will provide all general gynecology services, as well as assist me with some advanced specialty services. We are also privileged to have Teresa DeBusk, APN, as our Nurse Practitioner to assist us with routine gynecology and annual exams, as well as provide ready access to patients for work-in appointments as needed. Our vision is to provide an atmosphere that is quiet, sophisticated, accommodating, and unlike any other center in the region. “For You. For All.”

W

HAT DO TOM’S SHOES,

Whole Foods, and Warby Parker all have in common? It’s not that they are well-known and very successful businesses, which they are. It’s not that they all make or sell great products, which they do. The common denominator that these three companies share is found in their mission: As a company, they have committed themselves to helping our less fortunate neighbors around the world. Tom’s Shoes has a program called “One for One,” where they donate a pair of shoes to children in poverty for each pair of shoes they sell. Whole Foods, now here in Knoxville, donates food to local food banks and shelters, in addition to being involved in global hunger relief and environmental campaigns. Warby Parker, the online eyewear giant, was founded on the “Buy One, Give One” philosophy and provides a pair of eyeglasses in the developing world for every pair that they sell online or in their stores. You may be asking yourself, “Why is a plastic surgeon from Knoxville talking about eyeglasses, organic vegetables, and shoes?” Perceptions of the plastic surgeon, the plastic surgery patient, and the field of plastic surgery in general have been heavily influenced by popular shows like Dr. 90210 and Nip/Tuck. Plastic surgery – aesthetic or cosmetic surgery specifically – has been portrayed as being totally “unnecessary,” and the only people who either practice or undergo plastic surgery are vain, selfish, and materialistic. Honestly, the truth couldn’t be further from any of these characterizations. Sure 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2015

– people like those on TV exist, but they’re on TV because they are sensational and “watchable.” I, like most other plastic surgeons, am in the business of improving the quality of life of my patients – all of my patients. Whether it is a child with a cleft lip, a woman courageously facing breast cancer, or someone who has made the decision to enhance their natural beauty, I have the opportunity to help them change their life for the better. Each and every one of my patients has the chance to enjoy a greater sense of happiness, greater fulfillment, and a greater sense of wholeness and wellbeing as the result of my work. Nowhere is this more evident than in the field of mission surgery. Each year I have the opportunity to travel internationally to provide surgical care to children (and some adults) who would otherwise go without. And, while the trips are physically and emotionally exhausting, the feeling of personal and professional satisfaction at the end of the trip is something that is difficult to describe. If you have ever volunteered your time – whether it is at a local soup kitchen, helping build a Habitat for Humanity home, or you have had the opportunity to travel abroad on an international mission trip (medical or otherwise) – you know the feeling I’m talking about. It is truly a wonderful experience. However, I understand that not everyone will have the chance to volunteer their time in some of these activities. That is why we have created a program to pass along the feeling of joy that accompanies that type of service. The program is called: “For You. For All.”

For every cosmetic procedure I perform (injectable fillers, Botox, lasers, or surgery), a portion of the fee is donated to charities that provide free reconstructive surgery for children and adults suffering from birth deformities or injuries. You will help provide the medication, equipment, and resources to literally change the life of someone who doesn’t have access to the care they need or the means to get it. You’ll be able to make an impact in the life of a child, just by being a part of our practice family. And, in the future, you will also get to meet some of the people who benefit from your generosity and our partnership through online posts and in articles like this one. Do something for yourself, but give the gift of reconstructive surgery to someone who would otherwise be without. We’re not Whole Foods, Tom’s, or Warby Parker, but together we can help make our world a better place, one person at a time.

Snooty Patootie

S

O JUST WHAT is Snooty Patootie? If I had to define

it, I’d say it was a unique experience that encompasses a collection of vintage, repurposed, and new home furnishings with a warm French Country appeal. But it is the story behind Snooty Patootie that really defines just who we are and our passion for home décor and interior design. A Knoxville area native and mother of two young adults now attending UT, I embraced a career in corporate America as so many working spouses do today. But after nearly two decades as a procurement professional in the nuclear industry, I decided that it was time for me to pursue my life’s passion. So in 2007, I left my corporate career in pursuit of a less stressful lifestyle, more time with my family, and the opportunity to pursue my décor and design passion. Snooty Patootie was first launched out of my garage in 2010. I first began by handselecting vintage home furnishings from across Europe and the U.S. Our initial success resulted in relocating to a retail booth in Farragut before securing our very own retail space in historic downtown Lenoir City in 2014. With the surprising success of the business, my sister and best friend, Darlina Brookbank, decided to add her unique interior design talents, allowing us to significantly expand the services offered by Snooty Patootie. Then, in 2015, we relocated to the heart of the Farragut shopping 14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2015

district by opening our new retail shop featuring spectacular European architectural finds, including vintage doors, iron gates, and stained glass, in addition to furniture, lighting, accessories, candles, jewelry, and gifts. There simply is no other store in the area like Snooty Patootie. By combining our large selection of vintage, antique, and new home décor items from Europe and North America with our passion for unique interior design skills, we’re confident that you will have discovered the opportunity to create that showcase quality look for your home that you have been in search of. Having just completed a full redesign project in Turks and Caicos, I would like to personally invite you to visit us at Snooty Patootie to experience the inspiration that awaits you for your next redesign project, no matter how large or small.

Being Played the Fool by an Overvalued U.S. Stock Market? RECENT COMMENTS

Ali

by Fed chief Janet Yellen have Swofford, PhD many wondering about stock valuations and whether or not there’s still room for more on the upside. But are stocks overvalued? Yellen caused quite a stir recently when she said that stock valuations were “generally quite high.” She has reason to say so. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 have set all-time highs, while the Nasdaq Composite has flirted with record closes during the past few months. It’s too soon to tell whether stocks are overvalued, but investors are always vulnerable when they have “all their money stuffed in the same mattress.” Even if that “mattress” is the stock market. There is a reason diversify is the battle cry of many financial analysts. But what other options are out there? That’s where Real Estate Investment Trusts, or REITs, come in. A REIT is a company that manages a portfolio of commercial real estate to earn potential profits for shareholders who invest in the company. A REIT may receive special tax considerations if they pay out at least 90% of their net income to their investors. REITs may be publicly traded or what is called a Non-traded REIT. Each type has its own benefits and risks, so it is important to understand the different structures, fees, and risks. REITs have the potential to be a solution for the savvy, sophisticated investor. Not only can REITs provide possible tax benefits, but they can potentially add diversification to a portfolio. Because REITs are considered an alternative investment, they historically have not been correlated to traditional investments such as stocks and bonds. This allows investment and exposure to the Real Estate sector while removing the “landlord headaches” of actually owning real estate property. Want to learn more about REITs, diversifying your portfolio, and not being so tied to the stock market? Attend our July 23rd Workshop. ily reunion, but you’re very concerned about boarding your pet. Fortunately, there are pet care professionals who are totally committed to providing a safe and secure home away from home for your four-legged kids, regardless of their age, while you’re traveling so you can enjoy a guilt-free reunion or vacation. Pets are a lot like two-legged kids – they can be susceptible to various illnesses. Your child goes to daycare then comes home with the sniffles. Dogs come to camp and are exposed to other dogs. Older and younger pets are more susceptible to illness. Vaccinations are imperative in helping to prevent illness. At Ms. C’s, we will contact you and your veterinarian if vaccinations are not up to date or if there are issues with the vaccinations. Also, reservations are not confirmed until vaccination records are received. Absolutely no dog is allowed into our facility without up-todate vaccinations, even for a short tour. And

to properly safeguard your pet further, we encourage pet owners to communicate any and all medical conditions your pet may have with both your veterinarian and our kennel staff. Healthy de-stressors, including daily exercise, play time, and reinforcement of good behavior with praise and nutritious treats, are included with a stay at Ms. C’s. Surround sound soft music is continually played. Special attention and time are given to elderly, blind, deaf, and special need dogs. Meal preparation, medicine administration, and a special boarding area away from the general pet population are available at no additional charge, if needed. Why miss that family reunion? Enjoy guiltfree travel adventures with a reservation for your four-legged kid at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits.

Keeping Your Bones Healthy U

SUALLY PEOPLE know

when they are sick. Pain, fatigue, and other symptoms are an indication that something is wrong and compel us to seek the nature of the problem and any remedies that might be available. Osteoporosis, however, is a disease that can manifest for decades without any symptoms. By the time we actually discover we have it, the ability to reverse it may be very difficult. Osteoporosis affects about 55% of Americans over the age of 50, and of those, about 80% are women. The steady, progressive reduction in bone density can lead to fractures anywhere in the body but especially in the hips, vertebrae, wrists, and ribs. Though not usually fatal, these fractures can cause an abrupt downward trend in vitality, especially in people of advanced age. Bones are not static, rigid blocks of calcium. They are made up of living cells that are constantly changing throughout life. The same function that developed your bones as a child is able to heal a fracture as an adult. Since these cells are continuously changing, our lifestyle and food intake can have a substantial effect on bone health. The most important elements in generating healthy bones are calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, and estrogen/ testosterone. As we age, our hormone production naturally declines. We also tend to become less physically active and may have a tendency to have less exposure to sunshine, which is essential for vitamin D production. Being an

alkaline mineral, the body also uses calcium to buffer any acidic toxic waste so it can be excreted safely. If there are not sufficient alkaline minerals readily available to accomplish this, calcium may be leached from the bones to provide substance for this critical function. The best way to avoid this leaching of calcium is to avoid foods that result in a net acidic buildup, the most common today being simple sugar. Our bodies are designed to make use of carbohydrates, but there is an immense difference in the effect of carbohydrates that encompass calcium and other minerals, such as whole grains and simple white sugar or fructose. Even dairy, with its high calcium content, can cause a net loss of calcium. A National Institutes of Health study out of the University of California, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2001), found that “women who ate most of their protein from animal sources had three times the rate of bone loss and 3.7 times the rate of hip fractures of women who ate most of their protein from vegetable sources.” The best sources of calcium without adverse components are dark, leafy greens of any kind. Almonds, broccoli, tofu, Chinese cabbage, and green snap beans are also great sources. Bone health is important. Educating ourselves on proper nutrition and its effects on our bones is imperative as we age. If you start now, you can help prevent the condition of osteoporosis. You’ll be glad you did in a few decades.

Almond Blueberry Parfait » 2 cups almonds » 1 pint blueberries » 2 bananas » 2 Tbsp organic agave nectar Soak almonds overnight. Remove skins just by pressing them. The skins will pop off. Place almonds, bananas, and agave in the blender and cream. Adjust with a little water or apple juice for creamier consistency. Layer in parfait glasses with blueberries. A Modern Approach to Straightening Teeth

BEAUTY MAY BE SKIN DEEP

, but our appearance impacts many areas in our lives, from our personal self-esteem to how others view us. In my career as a dentist, I have had countless conversations with patients, friends, and family members on the best procedure or Pablo Foncea, DMD options to achieve straight teeth. Until recently, the most common procedure was the one we’re most acquainted with – metal braces. For cosmetic reasons, many patients avoid braces, and older patients, particularly those with active careers, shun them altogether, associating metal braces with the teen years.

one week. Visit Spa 9700 during July and August, and you can be at the beach anytime – even after the kids go back to school! The annual Summer Beach Party embraces all things tropical, relaxing, sunny, and “beachy,” and you don’t have to pack a thing! The rundown of the beach themed treatments begins with Gingerita Manicures and Pedicures, a twist on our usual Margarita Manicure and Pedicure. A sparkling citrus-cilantro soak, watermelon-basil scrub, mask and ginger sorbet body milk are followed by a paraffin treatment, all while enjoying a cooling Margarita (alcohol free of course). The featured facial is a Piña Colada Facial utilizing Eminence Organic Skin Care Products. This facial includes a coconut milk cleanser, coconut cream masque, and a pineapple enzyme peel finished with coconut age corrective moisturizer. Of course this relaxing facial includes all the pampering and attention to detail that Spa 9700 is known for, and, best of all, it is anti-aging. Body treatments are very popular in the summer when hiding beneath layers of clothing just looks silly. Perennial features of Spa 9700’s Summer Beach Party are the Inch Loss Wrap and the St. Tropez Sunless Tan. In addition to those is Spa 9700’s Toning & Firming Cactus Wrap ($70), a warm aromatic getaway that takes you through fields of citrus smoothness into a firming cactus wrap that feels more plumping than prickly. You can find other body treatments on the website menus or call and ask. Still a fairly new addition to Spa 9700’s menu is the Sweet Feet Salicylic Peel ($60) for us sandal wearers. While wearing sandals, flip flops, and all their cousins is something we all enjoy, it takes its toll on our feet. Dry, cracked heels are just not attractive no matter how “cute” the shoe. The Sweet Feet Salicylic Peel is designed to peel away the layers of dead skin and leave feet looking smooth and new. It can be repeated every 7 to 14 days and is a great treatment to have about a week before a pedicure. Women AND men will love this treatment. Of course there are beach towels, beach chair covers, bathing suit cover-ups, sunscreens, beach bags, totes, luggage, and almost anything you need for your trip to the actual beach or lake this summer. and notoriety comes and goes and technology can make skilled artisans obsolete, legendary photographer, Bob Gruen, is still on the cutting edge of capturing intriguing and relevant images of people we’re all interested in. Yet, as he still successfully crafts sought after photographs in a world of Instagram and YouTube, it’s the iconic work of his past that still excites people. Known for some of the most touching and historic images of the last nine years of John Lennon’s life, Gruen continues to work with Yoko Ono as her photographer and, more importantly, is still there for her as a trusted friend. A couple of years ago Bob and rock radio’s “Voice of Austin, Texas,” Jody Denberg, put together a book of photos Gruen had taken throughout the years and quotes from Jody’s work with Yoko. The tome was a gift for Yoko’s 80th birthday. As is often the case with Yoko, things tied to her and her late husband tend to generate lots of buzz and demand. This book that was originally intended to be a gift of love to her friends soon led to being published into a commercially available book entitled “See Hear Yoko.” Bob had this to say about the background and story behind the book. “It was a very personal project. I’ve been friends and worked with Yoko for more than 40 years. She was turning 80 years old, and what do you get the woman who has everything? Jody has been interviewing Yoko for her official EPKs for more than 25 years. He came up with the idea to take quotes from her interviews and pair them with my pictures to make a book we could give Yoko as a gift. “As we were making it, people asked if we were going to publish it. We said, ‘No, this is a personal gift for Yoko.’ We kept all commercial ideas out of the project. All of the photos were picked out for Yoko pleasant memories, things that we did together, things she would like to have in a photo diary. She liked it so much, when I saw her at an event a month after I gave it to her, she said we should publish it. She came over again a half hour later and said, ‘I mean it. We should publish this.’ A month later, her lawyer called and

Your Most Important Retirement Decision DO YOU KNOW which

claiming strategy will maximize your Social Security benefits? There are more than 88 different strategies – and that’s why I’m here to help my clients receive the largest benefits possible. For example: Married Couple: A couple approaching retirement age Yvonne Marsh, CPA were wondering how to make the best choices relating to their Social Security benefits. Should they claim under their own earning records or utilize the Spousal Benefit option? I showed them they were immediately eligible for an additional $1,000 in monthly benefits by claiming a Spousal Benefit. Divorced Single: During a consultation with a woman preparing to claim Social Security under her own work record, I learned that she had been married for 30 years and divorced 15 years ago. She was eligible to claim Social Security under her ex-husband’s work record since she had (1) been married for 10 years, (2) was over age 62, and (3) was currently unmarried. This strategy increased her lifetime benefits by more than $30,000. Widow/Widower: Most widows and widowers are unaware that they can use claiming strategies to increase their lifetime income too, such as $69,000 for a recent 59 year old widow I helped. Strategies for Everyone: If you wait to claim Social Security until age 70, your benefit will grow by 8% a year between age 66 and 70, providing higher monthly benefits while you’re alive, plus higher survivor benefits, too. At Marsh Professional Group, LLC, we provide comprehensive financial, legal, and retirement planning to individuals and couples for each phase of their lives. If you’re retired or approaching retirement and are between the ages of 55 and 70, I encourage you to contact me to ensure that you’re maximizing your Social Security benefits. Thank Goodness for Swimming Pools and Air Conditioning

S

O JUST how

are you coping with temperatures that have already risen to the mid-90s in early June? Fortunately, air conditioning and swimming pools are the solution for many who are trying to beat this early summertime heat. But did you know that these same Jeremy & Ashley Akers high temperatures and accompanying high humidity can have a profoundly negative impact on not only your home, but potentially your family’s health as well? Have you ever noticed how an iced drink in a glass, when taken out-of-doors into a high temperature/high humidity environment, forms condensation on the outside of the glass? Well, think of your home as a glass – a glass with a cool, air conditioned interior surrounded by hot and humid air. This disparity in temperatures and humidity levels often result in unwanted condensation forming within our homes. This is the same condensation that can result in the formation of mold. Of course there can be other sources of condensation as well. Mold spores exist virtually everywhere and are nearly impossible to eliminate. All mold needs to grow is a food source – such as cloth, drywall, or wood – and moisture. Often growing undetected, mold can grow inside wall cavities, inside HVAC systems, and even under carpeting. The first sign of mold may be a musty smelling odor. Or perhaps a family member shows symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, or watering eyes. Regardless, left untreated, mold can have a serious health impact on your family members. If you suspect that your home may have a serious mold problem, I encourage you to contact me at Mold Drs. USA for a free, no-obligation inspection. Left untreated, it is likely that your mold problem will only grow worse and represent a growing health risk for you and your loved ones.

process has been designed by me personally after two-and-a-half years of firsthand experience. Also, I am comfortable in saying that I believe this proprietary 11-step rug washing process offers rug owners a level of cleaning that you can see for yourself. Not convinced? Then I invite you to check out our informative video at www.superiorofknoxville.com. So what’s the big deal? Well, while most wallto-wall carpeting in homes today are constructed from permanently dyed, synthetic fibers and can be safely cleaned using a variety of cleaning processes, their Oriental rug cousins are a completely different animal. Hand-woven using all-natural fibers such as wool and organic dyes, most Oriental rugs can be permanently damaged if subjected to the same cleaning systems used to clean today’s wallto-wall carpeting. Our West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing facility combines 25 years of experience with our proprietary, state-of-the-art, 11-step rug washing technology to provide you with the safety and peace of mind that you deserve when cleaning your fine Oriental rugs. But don’t take my word for it. I encourage you to view our video on our website to discover a level of cleaning that you can truly see for yourself.

Knoxville’s

5 Master Closet Trends

A

S MASTER SUITES have gotten

larger, so have master closets. Gone are the days of a small, reach-in closet. Today’s master closets are about spacious organization and no more fighting about clothing space. It’s been interesting to notice closet trends during the past several years. What are today’s trends in the Knoxville area? The design professionals at Tailored Living have noticed:

BIGGER IS BETTER – Besides new home

construction that includes large master closets, many homeowners are choosing to undergo major renovations to create bigger closet space. Many measure approximately 9’x9’ to accommodate an island or peninsula for extra storage.

MORE COLOR – While white is the least

expensive finish, a larger percentage of homeowners are choosing wood grain, lightly textured, or darker finishes. They want to match cabinetry in the bathroom or bring a more personalized style to their closet.

CHANDELIERS – Adding a splash of style,

as well as good lighting, a small chandelier is the preferred lighting in larger closets. A small chandelier can take a closet from nice to stunning to help make it an elegant retreat.

VALET RODS – This is such a simple addi-

tion to any closet, but it can make a big impact on your busy morning! Frequently a woman’s – or man’s – favorite accessory, the valet rod is placed in about 98% of closets. A retractable valet rod provides extra hanging space when you need it. It’s great for displaying your clothes before work or special events, temporally hanging dry cleaned items, or ironed laundry. Many people also have slide-out belt and tie racks installed.

JEWELRY DRAWERS & Organizers – No

more mismatched earrings and tangled necklaces. Velvet-lined jewelry drawers offer scratch-resistant storage for jewelry and other precious items. An optional lock feature provides extra security. While features wanted in a master closet may change over time, the need for an organized space will never change. As one customer said recently, “For the first time in my life, I’m organized, a bit trendy, and have the closet of my dreams!” Yes, dreams really do come true.

THROUGH THE LENS:

Botanical Photography of Alan S. Heilman A NEW EXHIBITION featuring botanical photographs by retired University of Tennessee, Knoxville botany professor, Alan S. Heilman, is now open at UT’s McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture. “Through the Lens: Botanical Photography of Alan S. Heilman” explores the art and science of 60-plus years of Heilman’s award-winning botanical photography of leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, seeds, mosses, lichens, cones, and bark of plants native to or grown in the East Tennessee region. The exhibition will run through August 30. The 55 photographs on view include images of plants from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and

the UT Gardens on the Agriculture Campus and highlight Heilman’s fascination with color, texture, and plant structure. The McClung Museum is located at 1327 Circle Park Drive. Museum admission is free, and the museum’s hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 pm on Sundays. Save Up to 80% on Cabinet Resurfacing and Replacement

I

N THE past, if your

home’s kitchen and bathroom cabinets needed updating and replacement, you basically had two options: resurfacing or replacement. That is, until now. Today homeowners have a third option, which is 65% less than the cost of resurfacing and 80% less than the CARLEEN HEAD cost of replacement. Your third option to cabinet updating and replacement is an innovative and affordable wood renewal system that totally revitalizes your home’s existing cabinets without the frustrations associated with refinishing. Over time, wooden cabinets can become worn and faded. The N-Hance revolutionary wood renewal system can restore your cabinets’ life and luster at just a fraction of the cost of resurfacing or replacement. In fact, N-Hance allows you to shift colors or to change colors altogether. N-Hance’s trained technicians thoroughly remove all accumulated dirt, grease, and grime, as well as old coatings, before repairing any damaged areas. Finally, an elegant new finish is applied, revealing your “like new” cabinet results, using your existing cabinetry and saving you up to 80% off the cost of replacing your existing cabinets – and all without demolition, the mess of resurfacing, or refinishing. No dust. No mess. No odor. Also, the N-Hance story gets even better, because the same cutting-edge technology that can restore your kitchen and bathroom cabinetry’s original showroom appearance can also restore that new floor luster without the need to replace your home’s flooring or sanding and refinish, and all at a significant savings. If you’re a homeowner who is considering updating your existing kitchen and bathroom cabinets, then I encourage you to consider all of your options before making a decision. Also, remember that the considerable savings you’ll experience with N-Hance could pay for that new countertop or appliances.

But I Just Mulched!

Home

T

HIS STATEMENT is repeated by

every homeowner at least once or twice a year. The mulch looks great after it’s first installed, begins to fade gradually, and then seems to disappear. That’s because wood mulch decomposes over time and often needs to be replaced at least o n c e a n n u a l l y. Also, the decomposing mulch is a fertile breeding ground for both weeds and insects. That’s why we offer the ultimate alternative to conventional wood mulch. Called Magic Mulch, our rubber mulch, which is produced from 100% recycled material, is guaranteed for 10 years. It is color fast, will not decompose, is odor free, and does not promote weeds or insects. Non-toxic, Magic Mulch is also the safest play surface available and is playground certified. Not available anywhere else, Magic Mulch is far superior and less expensive than the rubber mulches sold at the big box stores. Is Magic Mulch more expensive? The initial cost is higher than wood mulch, but because Magic Mulch is guaranteed for 10 years, the savings over time are amazing. You can check out our cost comparison chart online at www. magicmulch.net. What about maintenance? Magic Mulch is virtually maintenance free, and because the rubber mulch is heavier than leaves or grass clippings, they can be lightly blown or raked away when dry. Also, Magic Mulch will not float or blow away. Will my plants be affected? Magic Mulch does not add or take anything from the soil. Water and nutrients pass right through to the soil below, and because Magic Mulch does not decompose, it is not a source of food for insects. What else will Magic Mulch affect? Just your pocketbook. Be prepared for significant savings and beautifully mulched landscape beds that will look as if they were just freshly mulched each and every day.

Liz Frame and the Kickers

M

ASSACHUSETTS FAVORITES, Liz Frame and the Kickers, are getting ready to hit the road again, their third summer in a row playing prestigious and popular venues in numerous mid-Atlantic states, including West Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington, DC. The band will start their road trip on July 6th, with four dates right off the bat in Tennessee: The Sugarlands Distilling Co. in Gatlinburg, The 5 Spot in Nashville, WDVX radio in Knoxville, and The Down Home in Johnson City. “We are really excited to get back out there,” says front woman Liz Frame, who along with bandmates, guitarist Pat Chamberlin, bassist Lynne Taylor, and drummer Pete Walsh, have been steadily building their base and amassing praise from both industry and press folk alike.

This year they will also be part of the Wills Mountain Music Festival in Bedford, PA, adding to an impressive list of fests the band has already played, including last year’s DelFest and the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest. The band has opened for Dawes, The Black Lillies, and Donna the Buffalo, among other headliners, and will be working with radio promoter Leslie Rouffe at Songlines in early 2016, when they release their second full-length CD of original material, tentatively titled “Grown Children.” But for the immediate future, the band is looking forward to reconnecting with fans down south and playing some new venues. “We feel really lucky to be able to make music and share it with as many people as we do, and we especially love doing so down South,” says Liz. “Southern hospitality is the best!”

You Deserve a Break… We Can Help! Most homeowners have at least one area of their home that causes frustration: Be it discolored grout behind the toilet, darkened, dingy brick pavers, or the traffic pattern in the carpet through the living room and down the hall.

BUT, DON’T BE too hard on yourself.

Traditional cleaning methods and overthe-counter cleaning supplies simply can’t get to the root of the problem. Cleaning with a mop, a scrub brush, or a rag can actually push soil deeper within your floors, aggravating an already irritating situation. The real problem lies below the surface of your floors, and no matter how much you scrub or what cleaning supplies you use, deeply embedded soil will remain, leaving homeowners irritated and dissatisfied. That’s where Surface Doc can help. Here’s

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

how they do it. First, they pre-spray your floors with an emulsifier to start the soil breakdown process. Then, they use a combination of high heat (to open the pores of your floor), pressure, and extraction simultaneously to remove even deep-down build-up. Without the heat and extraction method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer of the floor. But, with up to 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of your tile and taken away immediately. In addition, Surface Doc uses purified water to leave no residue. Once your home has been properly deepcleaned and sanitized, Surface Doc offers homeowners the option to seal floors. Sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors, countertops, tile and grout, and many others. The sealer particles penetrate deep within the porous surface of your floor, creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic,

countertops

and sunlight. After a proper sealing, your floors need only be wiped clean with hot water and a microfiber pad. Say goodbye to harsh chemicals and stringent cleaning methods, and say hello to a beautiful home that is easy to maintain. Surface Doc (and owner John CO-OWNER Fitzwilliam) looks John forward to helping Fitzwilliam your home reach its finest potential. Call them at 865-567-1986 or visit them at www.SurfaceDoc.com.

BEFORE

HAVE YOU EVER thought that your

home could be your main source of stress? There is a direct link between a functional kitchen and overall happiness in day-to-day life. That link starts with a well-lit and open kitchen with ease of access and function. More often we see outdated kitchens with bulky storage that host limited shelves with stacks of pots and pans piling deep into the cabinet. Trying to find that saucepan is like searching for a needle in a haystack. But what do you do? Where do you start? Tracy Giraldi heard about Shae Design Studio through mutual acquaintances. After having difficulty picturing the ideal kitchen in her current space, she decided to have Shae over for a consultation. “For fun, we had her come to the house,” said Tracy. “She instantly saw options that we had not. Needless to say, we were impressed!” Our vision as Interior Designers is to improve a client’s day-to-day environment by helping them grow into their home and loving every aspect of it, as well as using it to its full potential. We aim to show our clients that a home renovation does so much more

AFTER than improve the aesthetics and to help them understand that a functional home leads to a healthy and fulfilling life. “This transformation of the kitchen has really changed our view on ever leaving our home,” said Tracy. “This is simply where we gather and the heart of our home. We love the functionality of it. Cooking, eating, or just being in the kitchen with family and friends has become much more enjoyable. It’s cozy but spacious. Storage is a plus, too! People gather in our kitchen, and we love it!” We build each design based on the very specific needs of each individual client. By taking the time to sit down and listen, we are better able to hone in on the client’s most important needs, as well as their appropriate budget, to create a beautiful space that will enrich their lives.

“It’s like sunshine as opposed to rain,” said Tracy. “You are much happier in a place or space you love. You have to love where you live – you’re happier, healthier. I am saying that you can make it so, and you should! In our case, we purchased a house in an area where we wanted to be. Was it the perfect house? No. But it is much, much more so now! We will now consult Shea Designs on any other future remodel endeavors!” For more information, call 865-405-2079 or visit www.shaedesigns.com.

Update Your Master Bedroom IF YOUR BEDROOM doesn’t offer

you a respite from the hustle and bustle of the day, then now’s the time to transform it. The time and money you consider investing now will definitely pay off in big dividends in your future, especially because your bedroom redecorating project might just mean that you’ll find yourself being just a little happier, a bit more joyful, and, most importantly, at peace with yourself and your surroundings. Also, as with every decorating project, it’s important to develop a decorating plan that fits your needs, your lifestyle, and, most importantly, your budget. Consider these three simple steps: Visualize Your Project Begin by visualizing your entire project, and then list all the types of activities you’ll want to conduct in your get-away haven. Perhaps it’s writing thought-provoking entries in you daily journal, reading your favorite books, watching old romantic movies, meditating, or contemplating your plans for the next day.

Whatever your activity, think through what types of things will make you the happiest. Assess Your Space Look at your bedroom with a critical eye. Is it functional for your needs? Is the lighting adequate or is there too much light? Roomdarkening window treatments help you get the deep sleep you may need. Color Your World Next, lock in a color scheme. Color sets the stage and provides harmony to everything else

that will eventually find its way into your new bedroom. It’s the backdrop that surrounds all of your furnishings, fabrics, accessories, and lighting. Remember any decorating project that involves the world of color is an exciting one! Why not call us today for your complimentary consultation, and we will help make the process an exciting and fun transformation! Sandy’s work has been featured in Canadian House & Home, and she recently won a People’s Choice award for her designs.

The New Old Wood: Using Reclaimed Wood in Your Home

T

Jenny Blalock

Licensed General Contractor

HERE ARE MANY

unique characteristics of older homes that I feel set them apart from today’s newer homes. In my opinion, the intricate architectural details on display in many old homes are far superior to those found in most homes built today. However, if I had to name one trait that distinguishes older homes from homes built today, it would have to be their character. For me, character is felt rather than observed. When I walk in the front door of a home, the walls and flooring either emit character or they’re just standard framing with a few finish materials added to enhance their appearance. Recreate old home character with reclaimed wood Is it possible to add character to a home? Yes, it can be done with a generous infusion of reclaimed wood. Whether reclaimed from old barns, homes, or factories, reclaimed wood has decades and sometimes centuries of history etched into its beautiful grains and even visible on its surface at times. Due to the growing demand for reclaimed wood used not only in the custom homes I build, but from other builders and homeowners alike, I recently launched a new enterprise called Plantation Reclaimed, which specializes in the reclamation of decades and occasionally century old wood, which can not only add warmth to any room in your home, but also infuses a space with a sense of history and charm that new materials lack. You may be surprised at all the places you can incorporate reclaimed wood into your home. The reclaimed wood from Plantation Reclaimed can be used for flooring, interior trim, beams, doors, wall treatments, or pretty much anywhere in a home where you might consider using wood. If you’re concerned about protecting the environment, using reclaimed wood is the ultimate in recycling. You’re reusing material from trees that were cut down ages ago and saving it from ending up in the burn pile or landfill. There’s a reclaimed wood for just about any application Whether you’re looking for an elegant floor or an accent wall, there’s a reclaimed wood from Plantation Reclaimed that’s just right for your application. If you want wood that practically Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

oozes character, choose reclaimed material that still displays the nail holes from its previous incarnation. Barn doors are also popping up all over the place. Their rustic simplicity can be incorporated into any design preference and living space. Unlike hinged doors, these sliding ones require and take up very little space. The doors are easily mounted on special hardware. Reclaimed wood just might be able to

add that missing character to your home and may become a foundation upon which your family can create its own memories. To discover how reclaimed, antique lumber from Plantation Reclaimed can be incorporated into your new home or remodeling project, or to learn about the Luxe Homes experience, you’re invited to call me today.

July in the Garden J

UST LIKE THAT, another year is

halfway gone. I’ve always heard that life is like a roll of toilet paper, because the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. I understand that now. I also believe, however, that staying active as long as possible will extend the life of that paper roll. That means that I’m not giving you a list of “chores” for this month; I’m adding to your life! » Water is our first topic of conversation. Many customers are really good about watering for the first month or so, and then they just forget. Trees and shrubs are going to need supplemental water for their first year if we aren’t getting at least an inch of rainfall each week. Some, like hydrangeas, will tell you when they’re thirsty. Others, like hollies, just die. Perennials that are newly planted and annuals will need to be checked daily. Containers and hanging baskets will probably need water daily. Water ranks right up there with oxygen as being necessary for life. They can’t survive without it. » I encourage you to take a walk around your yard at least once a week. It’s good exercise and will allow you to

check on your plants. Watch for insects and disease to appear so you can get them under control before they do irreparable damage. We’re seeing all sorts of problems, so give us a call or stop by if you need help. That’s what we’re here for. » One of the problems I’m seeing more of is Rose Rosette. This is an incurable, fatal disease of roses that’s moving across the country. It generally manifests as “witch’s broom,” excess thorniness, and/ or abnormal red color. (Witch’s broom is multiple branches coming from one spot on a main branch. The excess thorniness is extreme, meaning hundreds of thorns on one branch. The red color looks like new growth but doesn’t go away.) If you have any of those symptoms, please give us a call. Unfortunately, there’s no treatment for this disease, and there’s a vast amount of misinformation. If you need confirmation of the disease, we ask that you bring the sample in a sealed bag. Yes, it’s that serious. » I’ve also seen more azalea leaf gall this year than I’ve ever seen before. If you have azalea leaves that are deformed, this is probably the culprit. The problem

is caused by a fungus, but the treatment is to remove the affected parts. If there are only a few leaves involved, you can just pull them off. If several are affected, you will need to prune the infected branch out. » Let’s talk about veggies for a minute. How are yours doing? Hopefully you’re starting to harvest some of the vegetables you planted, but this is another area where it’s crucial for you to keep your eyes open. It’s amazing how fast a tomato hornworm can decimate your tomatoes or a squash bug can destroy a plant. Vigilance is a big key to success for veggies! By the way, so is water. Consistent moisture is critical at this point in the year when temperatures get high and plants are producing. You can’t have juicy melons and tomatoes if your plants are dry. Also, keep harvesting, even when you run out of things to do with all that zucchini! » How are your containers and hanging baskets looking? Are they starting to get leggy, or have the blooms stopped and the foliage turned light green? Many of them just need a haircut and a shot of fertilizer. We fertilize weekly and suggest that you do, too. Petunias, calibrachoas, and ferns are especially heavy feeders. » You can still plant now, but be very selective. You can replace or add new annuals at any time, and you can add perennials to keep color going in your yard. Adding trees and shrubs at this time of year is a little more risky. There are a few shrubs (Crape Myrtles are one) and grasses that prefer to be installed when the ground is warm, so ask if you have questions. You should use a root stimulator such as Bio-Tone, and be prepared to water, water, water! » July isn’t a good time to prune. Unless you have something wonky going on, or dead or diseased branches, don’t start whacking! » Did you mulch this spring? If not, you may want to. Mulch helps keep ground temperatures and moisture stable. It also helps keep weeds down. It’s also good exercise! » Don’t forget the birds. Keep the birdbaths and bird feeders full and clean. That’s all for this month. Please feel free to call or come by any time with questions. We want to help you love your yard!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

PHLOX ‘MINNIE PEARL’

‘MINNIE PEARL’ phlox has quickly risen

to the top of the perennial world for its bountiful floral display and mildew-free foliage. It’s lavish floral parade beings in late April to early May and lasts for four to six weeks. The glowing white flowers, which are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, are produced in three-inch clusters atop stems adorned with narrow glossy green leaves. We have found in the UT Gardens, Jackson, when grown in rich garden soil, ‘Minnie Pearl’ will flower a second time on its own, but if cut back, it will often flower a third time. ‘Minnie Pearl’ makes a good cut flower and in the garden works with most other perennials in the front of the border. Siberian Iris, red hot poker (Kniphofia), Mexican feather grass, and Coreopsis are just a few good companion plants.

This native perennial is a naturally occurring hybrid between Phlox maculata and possibly Phlox glaberrima and was found along a roadside in Mississippi by plantswoman Karen Partlow. It eventually made its way to nurseryman Tony Avent, who named and commercially introduced it in 2003. ‘Minnie Pearl’ can be found in the UT Gardens, Jackson, growing in one of the perennial berms. It has recently been added to the UT Gardens, Knoxville. Just like the Grand Ole Opry character Minnie Pearl, this plant is chockfull of life and charisma and will make a captivating addition to any garden.

Phlox ‘Minnie Pearl’ grows 12-18 inches tall with the clump expanding by underground roots making a two-footwide patch in three years. Phlox ‘Minnie Pearl’ grows 12-18 inches tall with the clump expanding by underground roots making a two-foot-wide patch in three years. It is best when grown in full sun to part shade in average to organically enriched garden soil. Although it is drought tolerant once established, ‘Minnie Pearl’ performs best in moist, well-drained soil and appreciates supplemental water during periods of drought. It is hardy to zone 4. You Don’t Have to Live With Uneven Concrete!

D

Know your options, and enjoy your home!

oes your driveway, sidewalk, patio or pool deck have problem areas where sunken concrete has caused unattractive safety hazards? If so, you are among a common group of homeowners here in Knoxville, TN. Fortunately, leveling concrete is both simple & affordable. Below you can compare three options for taking care of your problem. Using Polyurethane is the best option for

fixing your uneven concrete issues. Because it is lightweight, it isn’t going to further weigh down the ground soils and continue to sink over time. The formulated polyurethane expands to over 15 times its size, so you can rest assured knowing the void under your slab will be completely filled. Cure times are also a big advantage to polyurethane injection, allowing minimal disruption during and after the job has been completed.

We at Master Concrete Lifting are fully committed to doing it right the first time. Our team provides the best in residential, commercial, and industrial concrete lifting and leveling. If you have an uneven concrete surface at your home or business, get your free inspection & written estimate by calling 888.920.7123 or visiting us online at everythingmasterdry.com.

Open Up Your Outdoor Living Spaces GET READY to let the great outdoors in! The

sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer, and with it will come the endless ways available for family and friends to enjoy fun right in your own backyard. But are you really enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor spaces don’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in their homes creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often prevent homeowners from fully enjoying their home’s outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade while allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios, especially in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evening. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics of your home, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help to seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Ijams Opens New Rock Climbing Wall

IJAMS NATURE CENTER is excited to

announce the opening of the Ijams Crag, Knoxville’s only outdoor rock climbing area. The Ijams Crag is located just off the Burnett Ridge Trail in the Ross Marble section of Ijams and offers outdoor climbing opportunities for both beginner and experienced climbers. The site features a cliff line with moderate grades, solid rock, reliable access, and close proximity to downtown Knoxville. Currently 10 climbing routes are open with 20 more to follow later this year. The Ijams Crag has been created by some of Knoxville’s most experienced climbers, including Benjy Darnell, Kelly Brown, Robert Blackwell, Sam Adams, and Charlie VanAnda. This new outdoor experience would not have been possible without the support of River Sports Outfitters, Patagonia, Lowe’s and the City of Knoxville.

HOW TO GET THERE

Directions from Ijams/Island Home Avenue: Turn left onto Gilbert Lane (opposite Island Home Baptist Church), then turn left on Belvedere Avenue, and turn right onto Aberdeen Lane. Continue right at fork on Aberdeen. There is limited parking at this entrance. Alternatively, park at Ijams at Mead’s Quarry and hike in approximately one mile along the Imerys Trail to Burnett Ridge Trail.

SAFETY FIRST

This is a climb-at-your-own-risk area. Obtain proper training and guidance before climbing. Rock climbing and associated activities such as rappelling are inherently dangerous. You alone are responsible for your safety. Substantial risk of injury and death exist. Permission to climb at Ijams is conditioned upon your assumption of all risk of injury to person and property. Climbing risks include, but are not limited to, falling, collisions with both man-made and natural objects, falling rocks, ice and other debris, failure of equipment or anchors, adverse weather, human error, slippery surfaces, and negligence of others.

PEOPLE LOVE IJAMS

Come visit us and find out why people love Ijams so much! Ijams is a wild place filled with rocks, rivers, trees, trails, owls, and salamanders. Visitors of all ages and ability can hike, bike, paddle, stroll, learn, or simply enjoy the day. Ijams is a sanctuary for all visitors to learn and connect with the natural world and be made better by that connection – a place where living with the earth and caring for the earth become one and the same. Photos by Paul Efird

Ijams is also a member and visitor-supported non-profit organization. Your generous support is needed to continue the ongoing legacy for generations to come.

ENJOY THE IJAMS QUARRY LAKE

River Sports Outfitters will be at the quarry lake all summer renting canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Their hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 7 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from noon to 8 pm. It’s great fun!

PROGRAMS

Grab your favorite four-legged friend and join Ijams’ own veterinarian, Dr. Louise Conrad, for a Wagging Walk on Saturday, July 18, at 9 am. She’ll review good doggy etiquette at the park and help owners understand the special safety concerns for dogs in nature. The fee for this program is $5 for non-members and free for members. To register, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110. A Family Drum Circle is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 4 pm. They say everyone marches to the beat of their own drummer, and this program will help you do just that! Gather your family and friends, and get outdoors with a family-friendly drum circle. Led by local artist, writer, foodie, herbalist, and crafter, Jackie Hardin, this program will allow participants to get in rhythm with themselves, others, and nature. Note: There will be extra instruments available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. This event is free. To register, call 865-5774717, ext. 110. Other ongoing programs to watch for this summer are our Brown Bag Lunch and Summer Slams at the quarry. For more details, visit www.ijams.org.

NATURE’S ALMANAC

July is the month that summer insects make themselves known. Several species of cicada will be buzzing in the trees around the nature center during the day, while leaf-like katydids call at night. Also, watch for luna moths and other great silk moths fluttering at night and swallowtail butterflies in the gardens. Most birds become quiet resting in the shade during the day. That is all except the ruby-throated hummingbirds that are actively coming to the many feeders all day long. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year. Stephen Lyn Bales is senior naturalist at Ijams and the author of Natural Histories and Ghost Birds published by UT Press and available in the Ijams gift shop. Jenny Newby is development assistant at Ijams. July 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Lucentio and the worldly Petruchio, and the two sisters they meet in Padua. Lucentio falls in love with Bianca, the apparently ideal younger daughter of the wealthy Baptista Minola. But before they can marry, Bianca’s formidable elder sister, Katherine, must be wed. Petruchio, interested only in the huge dowry, arranges to marry Katherine – against her will – and enters into a battle of the sexes that has endured as one of Shakespeare’s most enjoyable works. Macbeth July 17, 19, 23, 25 & 31 and August 2, 6, 8, 14 & 16 One of the great Shakespearean tragedies, Macbeth is a dark and bloody drama of a mbition, murder, g uilt, a nd revenge. Prompted by the prophecies of three mysterious witches and goaded by his ambitious wife, the Scottish thane Macbeth murders Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to succeed him on the throne. This foul deed soon entangles the conscience-stricken nobleman in a web of treachery, deceit, and more murders, which ultimately spells his doom. Set amid the gloomy castles and lonely

heaths of medieval Scotland, Macbeth paints a striking dramatic portrait of a man of honor and integrity destroyed by a fatal character flaw and the tortures of a guilty imagination. Indoor Matinee Performances August 2: The Taming of the Shrew August 9: Macbeth This year our indoor matinees will take place in the luxuriously air conditioned and well appointed Scruffy City Hall at 32 Market Square. The Most Patriotic Things to See and Do on Your Summer Vacation

of no school and summer vacations. It’s also the most patriotic season in America, encompassing three iconic American holidays – Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. This summer, why not put a patriotic shine on your family’s summer vacation plans? If you’re like most Americans, you probably consider yourself to be patriotic. But how much of America have you actually seen? Summer vacation is a great opportunity to visit the country’s many historic, cultural, and natural sites and share your sense of patriotism with your loved ones. Here are some tips, ideas, and inspirations to help you give your family vacation patriotic flare this summer. Travel the American Way The road trip is a great American tradition, and hitting the road in a recreation vehicle (RV) is an affordable, convenient way to see more of the country at your own pace. More than 15 million Americans were on the road in 5.5 million RVs during the Memorial Day weekend alone, and more than 22 million Americans will go RVing this year, according to a survey by Recreation Vehicle Industry Association and Cvent. Traveling in an RV can save you money on hotels and afford your family with an exceptional experience of all the sights and scenery along the country’s highways. Numerous campgrounds, including ones at top National Park sites, put you close to the action in the comfort, convenience, and independence of your own RV. Plus, traveling in an RV provides you with more time to spend with your family. You can even take the family pet along on your trip! Visit Iconic American Parks America’s National Parks System is unmatched in the world, with a size and diversity of sites that ensure most Americans live within a day’s drive or less of a National Park site. Every year more than 275 million

visitors pass through the 400 locations that are under the National Parks Service’s care. Protected sites include battlefields and other historically significant locations, heritage buildings and monuments, natural wonders, lake and sea shores, rivers, trails, recreation areas, and national parks. The National Parks Service website has a highly searchable database of every park and historic site in the system. You can look for a site by name, location, activity, or topic of interest, such as battlefields or natural wonders. The site also offers a clickable map that lists all the National Park sites in every state. While iconic National Parks such as Yosemite or Gettysburg may be on your bucket list, don’t miss some of the lesser-known locations, as they are just as enriching. Many of the best-loved National Park sites also offer campgrounds with RV facilities. Technology Can Help You See More Knowing where you’re going and what you want to see can help you get the most out of your travel time, so be sure to use all the technology tools at your disposal to plan your trip. Mobile technology like mapping apps and GPS devices can help you find your way and keep you on track to your destination. Roadtrip-planning websites like GoRVing.com and Roadtrippers provide plenty of advice and ideas to make your trip enjoyable and memorable. Don’t forget to check out the websites for each attraction you plan to visit. Knowing the hours and costs of attractions you want to see can ensure you do not miss a thing. Plus, these sites can also help you learn what’s in the area, so you can decide ahead of time

where you want to eat (and make reservations at busy restaurants) or help you find a grocery store so you can enjoy a meal in the comfort of your RV’s kitchen. Some Site Ideas to Get You Started As you’re planning your patriotic summer trip, here are some top sites that embody the spirit of America: » Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, Keystone, South Dakota – One of the bestrecognized emblems of America, Mount Rushmore is carved into a granite mountain in South Dakota’s Black Hills. In addition to Mount Rushmore, the region has numerous other historic and natural sights, including caverns, wildlife, and the Crazy Horse Memorial. » Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – The Union’s victory at the Battle of Gettysburg changed the course of the Civil War. It was both the war’s bloodiest battle, claiming about 50,000 lives, and inspired Abraham Lincoln’s famed Gettysburg Address. » Yellowstone National Park – Yellowstone is home to most of the world’s geysers, including the most famous one: Old Faithful. Wildlife and beautiful scenery abound, ensuring there’s much more to see and do in this national park that spans three states – Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. » Pacific Coast Highway – State Route 1 travels most of the length of California’s Pacific coast, affording travelers unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean and access to a plethora of charming seaside towns along the state’s coast. Now get out there and enjoy the summer!

A City by Any Other Name Would Be Just as Sweet

D

EEP IN TH E H E ART of

East Tennessee is an attractive community by the name of Sweetwater. This alluring little place stretches across Monroe and McMinn counties, being the most populated city in the former locality. As of 2014, Sweetwater had a population of about 5,827 residents, so the city is small, yet undoubtedly charming and robust. On July 10, 1817, a grant of reservation was given to Issac Vann in “Sweet Water” from the Cherokee Agency of the Office of Indian Affairs. Lands that would eventually become the city were developed along Sweetwater Creek, and further settlement heightened during the 1850s with the expansion of the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad. By 1875, the City of Sweetwater was officially incorporated. If you ask the residents where the city’s name came from, you will likely get various responses ranging from Native American linguistic influences to early settlers’ descriptions of the area’s famously palatable water supply. However, the history of the city’s name is a fascinating illustration of how local folkloric influences and the power of the press can combine to re-write history. In the early 1900s, historian W.B. Lenoir was asked to write an article for the Sweetwater Telephone about the early settlement and emergent growth of the Sweetwater Valley. He was specifically requested to describe the history of Cherokee Indians in the Sweetwater Valley, a topic of which he was admittedly not well versed. When the publication’s proprietor pressed for the article, Lenoir reached out to a friend who was much more acquainted with the subject at hand. As detailed in Lenoir’s 1916 History of Sweetwater Valley, his friend advised “The Cherokees [had] few if any traditions or legends and never occupied Sweetwater Valley so far as is known,” but he would nevertheless assist Lenoir in crafting a stimulating legend for the media. An amusing, yet inaccurate, plot was developed around a visit from poet / playwright John Howard Payne (17911852), who was said to have traveled through Sweetwater Valley during a trip from Virginia to Georgia. According to the story, Payne was so enthralled with the beauty of the area and the happiness of this lovely “Indian home” that it inspired him to author a musical gift to his hospitable host, a Cherokee chief. His tribute included words to a song entitled “Home Sweet Home,” which translated into the Cherokee vernacular “Swatee Watee.” Lenoir submitted the spurious account for his article, and this depiction stood as 60

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2015

the unchallenged history of Sweetwater’s namesake for several years. In his 1916 book, Lenoir admitted to fabricating the tale because the city didn’t have much in the way of legends or interesting stories to share. He divulged that neither he nor his friend were speakers of the Cherokee vernacular and confessed to having “palm[ed] off… such silly stuff on an unsuspecting public.” He seemed remorseful of his attempt to create a false history and lamented, “O, John Howard Payne! I almost wish that Home Sweet Home had not evolved from your fertile brain.” Since those days, Sweetwater has emerged as a beautiful destination spot for tourists and locals alike, proud and protective of its local heritage. The historic commercial downtown is filled with unique shops and cafés, antique stores, and the Sweetwater Heritage Museum. Several of the old commercial buildings on Main Street have received façade grants to add awnings or restore their historic appearance, including Wright Hardware, the prominent southern anchor of the Historic Commercial District. The City of Sweetwater has partnered with the Sweetwater Main Street program to improve their downtown and assist property owners in making repairs that might otherwise not be financially feasible. A pair of buildings in the 100 block of North Main Street display new, historically-appropriate striped awnings that complement hood moldings and decorative brick cornice details. Historic painted signs are sprinkled throughout downtown, either as store names on the main façades or side wall advertisements. Examples can be seen on the ancillary building behind Wright Hardware, the faded furniture company sign on the south wall of 201 North Main Street, or the colossal banner that stretches across the entire north wall of the old Sweetwater Hosiery Mill. Also notable within the district is a New Deal-era post office, complete with

an original 1942 interior mural by Thelma Martin entitled “Wild Boar Hunt.” At the northern edge of the Main Street district is another gem, the Alexander D. Biggs house, a circa-1820 substantial brick dwelling. Beyond the downtown historic district, Swe e t wa t e r h a s d e m o n s t ra t e d t h e importance of preserving a community to make it a better place to live and visit. The historic residential district just north of downtown is filled with a brilliant spectrum of styles and architectural detail. Splendid Victorian houses, charming Craftsman abodes, and all manner of design in between line the streets. The range of styles that unfold as you meander through the district is akin to an architectural set of cards. There are modest, well-cared-for dwellings next to fanciful homesteads where one can envision summers on the wrap-around porches. The common thread, quickly evident to the visitor, is that these buildings all reflect their owners’ utmost pride in the community that they share. It is a rare, sweet treat to see such a diverse and intact collection of these historic residences, no doubt showcases of this proud community. But then, if you’ve seen the rest of Sweetwater, it comes as no surprise.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. ETPA is a regional historic preservation organization that partners with Knox Heritage to serve a 16 county region. Truly Meaningful Ways to Show Your Patriotism

“E

XPRESSIONS OF patriotic enthu-

siasm are as bright and thrilling as fireworks, but they dissipate as quickly,” Washing ton Post blogger Alyssa Rosenberg wrote in a July 2014 examination of patriotism among American youth. Yet most Americans consider themselves patriotic, even if their definitions of the term vary slightly or even greatly, multiple surveys show. While politicians and political parties may be satisfied with fireworks and rhetoric, average Americans seek meaningful ways to show their love for their country, such as supporting veterans and activeduty service members. Here are a few ways you can show your patriotism and make a difference at the same time. 1. Support veterans and activeduty military. Taking care of the people who serve our country is an important way to show patriotism. You can show your support in many ways, from hiring veterans if you’re a small business owner to participating in business initiatives and organizations that help active-duty service people and veterans. Plenty of organizations can help you show your support. Showing support can be as simple as visiting with a veteran in your neighborhood, putting together a care package for someone serving overseas, or making a purchase from a merchant who donates a portion of the proceeds to a military support organization. You can find a comprehensive list of support organizations online at www.military.com. 2. Vote. Despite the concept of a participatory government being a fundamental tenet of America, recent voter turnout in this country has been historically low. In 2014, it was the lowest since

World War II; about 36% of Americans eligible to vote did so, according to the United States Election Project. Yet in a Fox News poll, 93% of respondents said they believed voting was a patriotic thing to do. Turnout is usually higher in years with a presidential race, but don’t just wait for a big election. Vote in your municipal, school district, county, and state elections, too. Take your children with you so they learn about the process and the importance of voting. It’s the American thing to do. 3. Fly the flag – the right way. Three patriotic holidays occur in the summer: Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Independence Day. It’s a perfect time to begin displaying the flag and turn it into a year-round habit. Displaying the flag is a wonderful way to show respect for our country and for everyone who has defended it throughout our history. There are right ways – and wrong ways – to display the flag. For example, illuminate the f lag at night if you’ll be displaying it ‘round-theclock, but never hang it with the union – the blue and white stars field – downward; that’s a signal of distress.

Read the federal Flag Code for more information on the proper way to display the flag. 4. Visit and support a national park. The National Parks Service protects many of the country’s greatest natural and historic treasures, and they’re available for the enjoyment of everyone. Many national park and historic sites are free, but some do charge admission. When you pay your admission fee or make a voluntary donation, you’re helping the National Park service continue to preserve America’s cultural and natural history. The wide va riety of sites a nd locations means virtua lly every American is within a reasonable drive of a National Park site. Whether you’re looking for a day trip or a weeklong family vacation, you can find a National Park location that will provide a fun, educational, and patriotic experience. Patriotism doesn’t have to be something that burns brief and bright and then fades until next summer. Meaningful acts of patriotism, like supporting members of the armed forces, can shine throughout the year.

ILL SMITH always knew he

wanted to work with children – it just took a little trial and error to figure out how. “I originally went to college thinking that I wanted to go into pediatrics, but as I quickly learned through all the experiences that I had working with young children, I knew that teaching was where my heart was,” he said. “I didn’t want to just see children when they were sick. I wanted to be there with them every day working, learning, and growing together.” Will, a third-grade teacher at Lonsdale Elementary School, has been named the Knox County Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year. “It is hard to even describe how it makes me feel,” he said. “There are so many amazing educators in Knox County that are just as worthy of receiving this honor. I have had the honor and privilege to work with many of them during my time in Knox County. It makes me proud to be given the opportunity to represent them and the differences that

they are making in the lives of our children each and every day.” Will has taught at Lonsdale for two years. He previously taught first grade at Inskip Elementary. “My classroom is extremely student-centered and goal-oriented,” he said. “During our time together, I facilitate whole group, small group, and individual instruction during the literacy and math blocks daily. I provide a safe and welcoming environment to ensure that my students have opportunities to safely explore and inquire throughout the day.” Will earned his bachelor’s degree in child and family studies and his master’s in early childhood education, both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. “I typically arrive to school in the morning between 6 and 6:30 am, and I don’t leave in the evenings until about 6 or 6:30 pm, sometimes even 8 or 8:30,” he said. “I take all that extra time to plan and really make sure that

My classroom is extremely student-centered and goal-oriented.” everything is perfectly ready for my students as soon as they walk in the door so that I can greet each of them with a smile and a ‘Good morning. How are you?’” Will makes sure to give his students plenty of one-on-one instruction, believing consistency and reliability are key to their success. “There is so much that I enjoy about teaching,” he said. “I love building relationships with my students and really getting to know them and their families. We laugh together, and we cry together. I see them on their good days and their bad days. They see me on my good days and my bad days, but through all of it, we are growing that much closer, and then, when they are gone, I miss them. For that year, they are my children, and even when they move on to the next grade, I call them my children no matter how old they get.”

SIW, or self-inflicted wound, describes the act of harming oneself.

I

REMEMBER a conversation I had

many years ago with a business mentor that I continue to hold in the highest regard. I was sharing with him the poor customer service experience that I was having with a particular sub-contractor I had recently hired. His words of wisdom to me were to lower my expectations and thus, maintain my sanity. I regarded his recommendation as being somewhat cynical, but there have been more than a few similar experiences throughout the years where his recommendation has helped to preserve my sanity. This raises the question, “How do your customers view your small business?” Great customer service is a no brainer. Great customer service paves the way for a future of exciting success for both you and your small business. Poor customer service, on the other hand, will relegate you to a world of mediocrity. Poor customer service is little more than a SIW. With the differences between great and

Great customer service is a no brainer. Great customer service paves the way for a future of exciting success for both you and your small business. poor customer service so significant, why do some companies choose the latter? I simply don’t know. It defies common sense. Customers view you negatively, and you pay for it with sub-par results. You gain nothing. In fact, poor performance usually requires a greater effort in time and money than great performance. I recently had an experience with an area company whose communications ended immediately upon receipt of the required down payment. During the next 10 weeks, there was zero communication unless it was

initiated by me. Needless t o s a y, o u r reviews of their p e r fo r m a n c e have been less than stellar. More recently I contracted with a second area company, which resulted in an entirely different experience. They returned my phone call promptly. They scheduled the date and time that they would arrive to perform their services. They even provided me with the names of the two technicians that were to perform the work, and the CSR left her name and phone number in the event that I needed to contact her for any reason. Which company would you refer to a friend or neighbor? Does your company experience repeated SIWs? Which company do you own?

So Many Options, So Little Time

W

HAT SHOULD’VE BEEN

a no brainer suddenly became quite the quandry. “How about a cup of coffee?” Looking over the type of coffee maker that makes one cup at a time, it seemed to take forever to decide which flavor to choose. The cute little rack contained so many options that we had a hard time making a simple decision. Finally my friend and I sat down to enjoy our hard-earned decision. Just a few short years ago, coffee was coffee. It required no thought beyond a yes or a no. Options are the vehicle of opportunity. With each comes a chance to analyze our trajectory and align decisions that help move us forward. Even though what cup of coffee I choose won’t matter much in the long run, most decisions carry more weight and must be seen through a lens of expectancy. Then there are distractions. They conceal options by clouding the bigger picture. The key is the ability to recognize distractions so you’re not, you know, distracted. My former pastor used to say, “Just keep the main thing the main thing.” It was that point in the

meeting when we were wasting time discussing things that didn’t matter. That phrase brought us back to reality, where we put aside petty nothingness and got down to business. Can you identify the distractions in your life? Those nickel and dime moments that derail momentum? Often they’re things you don’t even notice. That conversation where you didn’t really pay attention. Those times when you worked past the hour where you could still squeeze in a workout. That commitment you made because you couldn’t say no. Those extended moments on social media when you realize it’s been hours and you don’t get them back. Distractions can be devious. Options are your power source. It’s how you set yourself apart from mediocrity. Options are where you leverage your ability to choose based on a plan and purpose. It’s how you take charge of your life and feel confident about your direction. Understanding the difference comes with intentional discipline. It’s the internal filter from which decisions are made. Each day a barrage of choices will present themselves. With each comes incredible power to

leverage options, limit distractions, and set ourselves apart from medio c r i t y. D o n ’ t u n d e re s t i m ate your ability to choose. Take charge, take inventory, and have a plan. My how time flies. There’s nothing worse than feeling as though you’ve left something on the table. Time, talents, your best you. At the same time, there’s nothing better than that sense of accomplishment and sense of inner discipline, for that’s what produces the drive needed to take charge of each day and use every opportunity to be your best. So many options, so little time. We enjoyed our coffee that morning. We laughed as we discussed the decision making process. Yet at the end of the day, we realized it wasn’t so much about coffee. Vitamins for Your Picky Eaters A NYONE WHO HAS A CHILD

can attest to the stages that children go through in regards to their eating patterns. Some children can go weeks with only eating peanut butter sandwiches, macaroni, or some other favorite food. Who knows what prompts some children to be picky eaters? They just seem to know what they want, and many of them can be quite stubborn about what they will and will not eat. Despite commands and even pleas, many children simply bow up and refuse to try new foods. In a perfect world, children would simply eat what’s placed before them at a meal. Unfortunately, this isn’t a perfect world. Even if you have children who do eat a wide variety of foods, you still don’t have a guarantee they’re receiving the proper nutrition they need. This is where children’s vitamins come into the picture. If you don’t have your children on a vitamin, you’re encouraged to do so. Work it into a part of your family’s daily routine. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to get children to take their vitamins. Why? Children’s

vitamins are attractive. They come in a wide array of colors and shapes and now even come in many different styles, like gummy bears, lollipops, and even gumballs. Kid’s vitamins are tasty on a child’s tongue and taste much like fruit juice or candy. In a kid’s mind, if it tastes good and looks good, they’ll eat it. A word of caution about children’s vitamins is that all of the hard work by manufacturers to make them attractive is paying off. This means most children don’t truly think of their vitamins as medicine. Since the vitamins are so tasty, some kids will even ask for them. Some children actually do think they are candy and wouldn’t hesitate to gobble them up if they were within easy reach. Just like all other medications, keep vitamins locked up and out of the reach of children. Giving your kids a daily vitamin can give you peace of mind that they’re getting the vitamins and minerals they need. This is important in today’s fast-paced fast food world. However, keep in mind that vitamins are intended to be used as supplements and not replacements. Vitamins should

never be looked at as a replacement for healthy eating. With a little thought and time, parents can make trying new foods fun for kids. For instance, letting kids add grated cheese, dips, or sauces to their meat and veggies will help some of them take the plunge to try new foods. Letting a child help you make a veggie cheese pizza, or letting them pick out fruit at a market, can help make them feel more in control, too. If you do discover your child has gotten into their vitamins and eaten them, call the Center for Poison Control and Prevention at 800-222-1222. Specially trained doctors, nurses, or pharmacists will respond to your questions and concerns 24 hours a day, seven days a week, free of charge. Hands Off H

APPY 4TH OF JULY! Let’s

talk about some gross things. No, I don’t like to, but sometimes you must say what needs to be said so there’s no confusion. Ladies and gentlemen, we need to be very careful with where we place our hands. Why? Because we shake hands with others and touch one another and hand each other things. Recently I was in a business where there were clerks helping customers. One of the clerks began digging in her ear with her finger, as I’m assuming she had an itch or was feeling for something. When she finally removed her finger, she actually looked at her finger as if she were looking to see what came out. Ugh! Then she proceeded to help her customer. I know we would all agree that this

is rude, but the reality is that I see this type of behavior more often than I would like to. We also should try to keep our hands off of our faces, like our noses, and we need to keep our fingers out of our hair. Sometimes sitting at an event I watch ladies and girls brush through their hair with their fingers, and sometimes they go on and on and twirl it up and twirl it down. This is not appropriate in public. People do not want to see us wipe our noses with our fingers or brush our hair with our fingers, especially when we are interacting with the public. These things are considered personal hygiene, which is always done in private. We also want to always cover our mouths when yawning. It’s not polite to open our mouths wide during a yawn without trying to be more discrete. We don’t want to look

like a hippopotamus trying to stretch our mouths to their limits. It’s very unsightly. Let’s all remember that one of the purposes of etiquette is to help those around us feel comfortable. We must remember this as we are thinking of our actions and how our actions appear to others. Remember discretion when it comes to personal hygiene and personal physical care. I know we’re all improving. Who doesn’t need a little refining? I know I do. Have a great month!

ultrasound has been used for diagnostic imaging purposes for many years. More recently, ultrasound has been turning up the heat in the field of aesthetic medicine. The power of ultrasound has been harnessed to perform noninvasive cosmetic procedures with some amazing results. Two companies have brought ultrasound technology to the aesthetic marketplace. These are Solta with Liposonix and Ulthera with Ultherapy. Both Liposonix and Ultherapy use focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Liposonix and Ultherapy work. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the premier provider of Liposonix and Ultherapy in the Knoxville area. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants has performed more than 300 Ultherapy procedures. Our Ultherapist is one of only four Ultherapists in the state of Tennessee who have received advanced Ulthera training. In 2014, our Ultherapist performed more Ultherapy procedures than anyone in the state. Using focused ultrasound to melt fat, Liposonix has been approved to treat the abdomen and flanks (love handles). The Liposonix treatment is ideal for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch or 2.5 cm of fat to lose in their abdomen or flanks. It is non-invasive, so it is a great solution if you have stubborn fat but don’t want to have surgery. The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and

testing behind its development. It has a well-defined safety profile during and after treatment with very good patient satisfaction. With a single treatment we typically see patients lose between one and two inches from their waistline, and maximum improvement is seen after two to three months. Ultherapy is the only device that has received FDA approval for a noninvasive neck and brow lift and most recently to improve lines and wrinkles on the decolletege’. We use it to lift and tighten the skin of the face, neck, under the chin, along the jaw line, and on the brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the skin’s surface. Another factor that promotes safety and better results is that with Ultherapy we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months with maximum improvement at six months. While these ultrasound technologies do not duplicate the results of traditional surgery, Liposonix and Ultherapy are inviting alternatives for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery. Please call Southeastern Dermatology Consultants to schedule a complimentary consultation, and see if either of these procedures are a good option for you.
