OM AND I have moved

a few times in our now 46 years of marriage. Some moves required going to another city and some to another state, but most recently our moves were within the same city. Not all the moves though involved a new home but rather finding an existing home that met our needs and our finances, and all Photo by D. Roberts Photography our moves did require setting up housekeeping all over again. Relocating and finding the home that is right for you and your family can be stressful, and it helps to have a Realtor that is with you every step of the way - and that includes selling a home, too. We’ve been on both the buying and selling side of homeownership, and we’ve had some great Realtors that were looking out for our best interests. In this edition of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to introduce a real estate sales team that can help you market your home if you are selling and can show you homes that fit your criteria if you are buying. That team is 4

David Box and Kara Blackstock of the Riverhouse Group of Keller Williams Realty in West Knoxville. They will describe to you their innovative approach to marketing that is breaking with tradition and providing technology that gets your listing in front of as many potential buyers as possible. They also are focused on communication with their clients so their clients do not feel left out of the loop. David and Kara combine communication, technology, and professionalism that will assure you a successful transaction. I have said that I will not move again each time I have made a move, but I have learned to never say “never.” There are instances that arise that make moving necessary, desirable, or beneficial, so I will wait and see if a new adventure is in our future. Until then, I am enjoying my home here in East Tennessee and making it all I want it to be. Living on the lake is like being on summer vacation all year long, and I love it. Enjoy your summer!

Introducing the

RIVERHOUSE GROUP of

KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY I

N THE MEDIA TODAY,

existing and would-be homeowners are learning about a much improved real estate marketplace. Home values have increased in many areas, homes are often selling faster, and there are actually shortages of homes in many communities. With all of these existing variables in today’s real estate market, you may be asking yourself if this is the right time to jump into the market. How do I select a Realtor? How much home can I afford? What

is the value of my home? These are just a few of the dozens of questions that you’ll need to address when buying or selling a home, but perhaps the most important decision you will make initially is selecting a Realtor. Successful real estate transactions rely on much more than luck. An experienced Realtor can help you navigate the many challenges that can await the inexperienced buyer and seller working alone and can help transform an otherwise challenging real estate

experience into one that is a positive experience for their clients. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to introduce you to the premier real estate sales team of David Box and Kara Blackstock of the Riverhouse Group of Keller Williams Realty in West Knoxville. A team dedicated to providing exceptional, personalized service for all of your residential real estate needs, we trust you will enjoy this interview with David and Kara.

EK: To start, bring our readers up to date on the current Knoxville area residential real estate market. David: At the beginning of this year, home listing site, Zillow, listed Knoxville as the #7 hottest market for 2017. They couldn’t have been more right. The Knoxville market is booming. Our community has so much to offer. From an abundance of outdoor activities, natural beauty, low unemployment rates, high income growth, no state income tax, and affordable housing – Knoxville is a great place to live. Kara: 2017 has certainly been a seller’s market, and buyers need to act fast. Home sales continue to rise, while we are also seeing an increase in the average sales price. The average days on market (ADOM) has decreased in 2017. Our firm is outpacing the market in days on market by selling homes 35% faster than the local real estate market average. The ADOM for our local real estate market is 92, and at Keller Williams, it is 60. It is not uncommon for sellers to receive multiple offers and even full price offers in today’s market. EK: Tell us a little bit about each of you. Kara: I was born and raised in Knoxville, and I am a mother of two daughters. I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in education. I became a teacher because I have a passion for helping others. I believe that’s why the transition to real estate was easy for me. I love helping clients through every stage of selling or buying a home. Developing relationships with my clients is of utmost importance to me. I want my clients to trust me and know I have their best interest at heart. The best compliment is when past clients refer their friends and family to me. David: I am a native of Charleston, SC, and was first drawn to Knoxville about 20 years ago. It is an amazing place to raise my son and daughter. I spent the majority of my professional career in leadership and sales training positions. This provides tremendous value in real estate when helping clients in the emotional process of buying and selling a home. EK: Unlike other Realtors, you have chosen a team type approach. How does that benefit

your clients? David: Kara and I knew we would be stronger together and that our clients would benefit from our partnership. Internally, it allows us to share ideas and constantly learn from one another. For our clients, they get a number of benefits, including the opportunity to seek opinions from both of us, increased availability and contact, and varying negotiation tactics. EK: What would you say is the single greatest challenge confronting buyers and sellers today? Kara: I believe one of the greatest challenges for sellers this year is the lack of homes available to choose from when they sell their homes. Many sellers are hesitant to put their home on the market without knowing where they are moving next and are worried they won’t be able to find a home in a short amount of time. With buyers being more aggressive with their offers and sales prices increasing, we are also seeing issues with appraised values. It has not been uncommon to see homes not appraising for the contract price, which in turn often leaves the buyer scrambling to come up with more money for the purchase or risk losing the home. EK: Describe for our readers your innovative approach to marketing. David: We take a non-traditional approach and believe in going where the customers are. An astonishing 93% of all real estate searches begin online. We want to provide the best experience for these shoppers. Today’s clients are digital savvy and are seeking the most information possible when home shopping. Our marketing techniques empower consumers to fully immerse themselves into our client’s home listing. EK: Tell us a little more about that. Kara: We offer HD video tours that utilize a handheld gimbal device that gives a firstperson walkthrough of every room in the home. This allows for a 24-hour virtual open house of the seller’s home. We provide an aerial drone flyover and yard view so a buyer can also see the surrounding areas. We use the latest 4K camera technology that creates 3D dollhouse views, 2D floor plans, and allows for appliances and other highlighted

areas to have linkable content for buyers to learn more about the quality of the home. We package it all together onto a dedicated single page website specific to their home. An example of how we market a home can be found at www.12627earlyroad.com. We take all this information and then market it on 350 search engines and 76,000 separate websites. David: We also want to ensure that our client’s home is staged and presented in the best manner possible. We offer complimentary staging and design services to all our clients. EK: Talk about the importance of communication with your clients and your approach. Kara: We believe good communication is key. Buying a home is usually the largest purchase and investment that a person will ever make. We understand that buying and selling a home can be an emotional and stressful process. David and I believe that communication is the center of a successful real estate transaction. We never want our clients to feel left out of the loop or confused because they were not receiving feedback and status updates. EK: There are a great many Realtors for a client to select from. How would you differentiate yourselves? Kara: We pride ourselves on a number of pillars: Communication, technology, and professionalism. We want our clients to know that we are available when they need us, but, more importantly, we always want to have a personal touch in our communication that shows transparency, honesty, and integrity. Our dedication to best-in-class technology and use of digital media ensures we market our client’s home to today’s consumer. The Riverhouse Group’s professionalism and experience will help all the way from the sales negotiation to a smooth closing. EK: In closing, tell us something we don’t know about Riverhouse Group. Kara: We are in the process of developing a TV show called Stage Right. Stage Right is a self-contained format where we help homeowners who have had difficulty selling their homes due to staging or appearance issues. Working with a very small budget, their current furniture, and some tough love, we transform their home and lawn into something a buyer can’t resist. EK: How can our readers learn more about you? What is the best way for them to contact you? David: Visit RiverhouseKnoxville.com to learn more or contact us below.

HEN MY WIFE, Patti,

and I left our lives in corporate America 11 years ago to launch Granite Transformations, little did we recognize just how transformational our decision would become for our family. Clearly at the onset, our focus was on our product, as it should be. We were selling the highest quality granite surfaces available anywhere in the world. No slab granite could match its superior characteristics for either strength and, more importantly, safety. In fact, our granite surfaces are so safe that they are the only surfaces certified by the National Safety Foundation as safe for food preparation in commercial restaurants. Soon after launching Granite Transformations, we came to understand that we were doing far more than just installing granite countertops. We were touching the lives of families just like ours, and the kitchens we were helping to remodel were far more than just food preparation areas. They were gathering places where families gather daily to share the events of the day, as well as a gathering place for graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. These experiences have truly transformed the way we approach our business today. We would like to think of it as more of a “family-to-family” experience. Our mission statement is to provide the best products, the best process, and best experience available in today’s remodeling marketplace. Our lifetime complaint-free, A+ rating from the BBB is an achievement that we have worked very hard to earn and is something that we are very proud of. Elevenplus complaint-free years is virtually an unheard-of accomplishment in our industry. I believe that it is because of our approach that during the last decade, we have become 10

European Fine Hardwood Floors

“I could not be more pleased with my floors” J

UST WHY ARE a growing number of area homeowners selecting European Fine Hardwood Floors for both their new floor installation and refinishing? Betsy P. of Knoxville recently shared with Everything Knoxville her personal experience in working with European Fine Hardwood Floors. “My husband and I custom built our home 26 years ago,” she said. “Our oak hardwood flooring was installed on our entire main f loor, including the kitchen. Our f loors remain one of my favorite features of our home. When we decided it was time to update our kitchen, our new island configuration resulted in the flooring that had been under our previous island being exposed. There was also a need to make some necessary repairs to our floors and to refinish the kitchen and back hallway.” Betsy researched area flooring companies

and saw European Fine Hardwood Floors’ display ad and article in Everything Knoxville magazine. “I was particularly interested in the dustless containment system they advertised,” said Betsy. Betsy was also influenced by European Fine Hardwood Floors certification as Bona floors craftsmen. “I was skeptical when European Fine Hardwood Floors’ owner, Valera, assured me that I would not need to cover my kitchen cabinets to protect them from dust,” said Betsy. “But I later discovered that their dustless containment system performed exactly as promised.” Valera also installed matching f lush mount wood floor vent registers that added to the beauty of Betsy’s refinished floors. “They exceeded my expectations,” said Betsy. “The stain they applied matched the

stain color of our other oak flooring, and their work was meticulous. They were careful to avoid damaging adjacent baseboards and cabinets and completed their work on time. I found both Valera and his wife, Svetlana, to be ethical and honest, and their expertise is exceptional. They work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome and truly value their clients. They garner my highest recommendation.” Are you ready to refinish your home’s hardwood floors? Discover the European Fine Hardwood Floors dust-free difference for yourself.

Many of these players attended the Learn Bridge in a Day™ prior to starting the bridge lessons. The Knoxville Bridge Center hosts continuing bridge lessons. A new class starts on Sunday afternoons at 1:30 beginning July 16th and also on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 beginning July 18th. Each week the lessons are given on both days, and participants are encouraged to attend either or both – whichever is convenient with their schedule on any given week. If you already have a bridge partner, come together. If you don’t have a bridge partner, why don’t you come to the lessons and find your new partner in bridge? The first two weeks of the classes are free. Beginning the third week, the lessons cost $5 per lesson that you attend. It is hard to imagine anything as worthwhile and inexpensive as bridge. we talked about the benefits of having a “companion” dog in the home. Now it’s time to manage the dog. The role of a good manager is to lead, guide, teach, and mentor. Your dog needs the same actions from you. Raising a dog takes work, but it should not feel overwhelming. Be proactive in preventing the development of bad habits. Don’t give the dog too much freedom, as your dog can develop unwanted behaviors. Practice makes perfect, good or bad! Good management helps prevent problem behaviors from getting worse. Dogs need clarity in understanding exact expectations. It’s not about asserting dominance. Be a team leader. Think of you and your dog as a team. Understand how, as team “captain,” it’s your responsibility to teach your dog the skills needed to help him behave appropriately. Misbehavior is not a dog’s attempt to dominate; it’s just behavior, and behavior can be changed. Your dog doesn’t know right from wrong until you guide him by providing positive reinforcement when exhibiting

appropriate behavior. Appropriate behavior is going to take time. Be patient! Be committed! In her book “Tales of Two Species,” Patricia McConnell states, “It takes growing humans about 20 years to learn to control their emotions, so be patient with your dog and think in terms of months and years when managing their actions, not days and weeks.” Clients ask about the good behavior of our canine guests since we remove the leash and guide them using only voice commands. By utilizing management skills, showing respect, building trust, and providing love and attention to our guests, plus playing and interacting with them, they develop familiarity with our environment. This makes life easy for both our guests and our staff.

have four big reasons to be proud this year: Four of their educators have been chosen to participate in the Tennessee Educator Fellowship. One of those teachers is Amy Cox, a third grade teacher at Halls Elementary, who says she’s “humbled by this opportunity.” “In seeking this fellowship, it was with an open mind, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn and be a part of something beyond Knox County,” said Cox. “I believe as an educator, the best way to serve is by being educated.” Cox has been teaching at Halls for 18 years. She’s taught third grade for five years and taught first grade for the 13 years prior. “I always wanted to work with children in some complicity, so I completed my undergraduate degree in early childhood education at UT Knoxville and my MS in elementary ed,” she said. Cox departmentalizes her classes, which means she teaches reading, writing, and social studies to two classes, and her

teaching teammate covers math and social studies. Cox focuses on eight small g r o u p s e ve r y d a y comprised of students with varying ranges of reading and writing skills. One of their favorite activities is reading aloud together. “Students work with peers and learn with technology and project-based learning,” she said. “All this is done with lots of laughter, respect, and love of learning for all. It is important that every student feels loved and valued as a student, regardless of ability.” Cox says her biggest challenge is the balance between instructional and evaluation time. “Teaching is very fluid!” she said. “I am constantly evaluating my teaching and reflecting on best practices.” The Tennessee Educator Fellowship includes 50 educators from across the state every year. The program allows its

I believe as an educator, the best way to serve is by being educated.” participants to advocate on behalf of their students while continuing to teach. “I am humbled and excited about this opportunity,” said Cox. “I realize that this is an amazing fellowship, and I have a limited time to make the biggest impact for students and teachers. It will be a way that I can support my students, my school, my community, and Knox County while working with educators and policy makers across Knox County.” For Cox, there’s a personal benefit to the fellowship, as well as a professional one. “It is also a way to show my 13- and 10-year-old daughters that you have a voice, to always put yourself out there, and you are never too old to learn and make a positive difference,” she said. MAGINE TWO SCENARIOS: In the

first one, you’re standing in front of 1,000 puzzle pieces dumped in a big pile, and it’s your job to assemble it with no picture to follow. In the second scenario, the same 1,000 puzzle pieces have been neatly organized, and you’ve been given directions to follow Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA and a picture of the finished puzzle. Which puzzle would you rather complete? I’m sure you see my point – if you ignore your legacy planning, your last gift to your loved ones is that big messy puzzle, with no directions to follow. At Marsh Wealth, we think of legacy planning in two phases. The first phase is getting our clients’ “puzzle” organized and categorized into an “Everplan.” An Everplan is a secure, digital archive of everything your loved ones will need should something happen to you. It contains wills, trusts, insurance policies, financial accounts, passwords, information about your personal bills, as well as health and medical information, advance directives, final wishes, funeral preferences, and much more. Once all of the information and documentation is saved in your secure Everplan, you can choose which parts of your plan you’d like to share with important people, called deputies. Then, if anything happens to you, your deputies can access the important information they’ll need, when they need it. The second phase of legacy planning is reviewing the complete picture to ensure there are no unintended tax or legacy complications. The most common mistakes we see are missing or outdated beneficiary designations, individual accounts with no POD (pay on death) transfer forms attached, incorrect account titling, and IRA trust beneficiaries that lack a see-through provision for tax purposes. those 10,000 steps! We begin our walk with empty buckets to raise awareness of the global water crisis. Halfway through, we fill the bucket with water to help better understand the challenges people around the world face daily in search of something that we often take for granted: Water. Twenty-five major cities have hosted successful Walk for Water events to raise funds for Water Mission water systems in 53 countries

worldwide. The Chattanooga Walk will benefit South Sudanese in Bidi Bidi Refugee camp, where Water Mission has already developed one water system in conjunction with WHO, UNICEF, and UNHCR. Water Mission has a 16 year history of providing disaster relief and helping communities build individualized, hi-tech solar power, remote monitored safe water solutions. The walk will take place at RiverPark, located at 4301 Amnicola Hwy, Shelter #3. Enter the driveway adjacent to CSTCC (Chattanooga State Community College) and park in the large event field. Shade will be

provided along route and in event tents. On the day of the event, you can pick up your t-shirt and bucket beginning at 9 am. The walk starts at 9:30 am and will last about one hour, with lunch, water games, live music, and sponsor tents on site. Team recruiting/registration will be held at the UNUM cafeteria on July 20 and 26. If you or your team is interested in joining the Chattanooga Walk for Water, or for more information, email Carrie Wyatt at cwyatt@ watermission.org or visit www.watermission.org. Volunteer opportunities are also available the day of the event.

Meet Mandie – The New Face of RAF Knoxville

I

T WAS FOUR YEARS

ago when Mandie Beeler first learned of Random Acts of Flowers. Her grandfather was a recipient of one of the beautifully recycled bouquets while residing in a nursing home toward the end of his life. “On more than one occasion, he would point out the flowers and tell me how much he loved the concept,” Mandie recounts. “That always stuck with me, and I believed that at some point I would become involved in RAF.” Today Mandie is the Program Director at RAF Knoxville, the first of five Random Acts of Flowers branches established to improve the health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities through deliveries of recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. “Who knew that personal connection eventually would put me so directly in the center of this mission?” Mandie says with that big, infectious smile the RAF Knoxville volunteers are growing accustomed to since she joined the organization in early April. RAF Knoxville has made the most of Mandie’s arrival this spring, hosting an open

house in May, signing on 49 new volunteers, and delivering almost 2,500 bouquets and personal moments of joy during the past two months. RAF Knoxville has delivered more than 72,000 bouquets since its inception in 2008 and is on track to serve close to 15,000 of some of this community’s most vulnerable people this year. “We’re really seeing a resurgence here in Knoxville – in our volunteers, with our partners, and in donations,” says Kellie Doyle, National Director of Mission Strategy. “The energy and sense of commitment on all levels is very rewarding.” Mandie comes to RAF Knoxville after serving for several years as Associate Dean of Students at Tennessee Wesleyan, where she directed a variety of aspects of Student Life including community engagement. In that role, she established ongoing community partnerships for service-learning designed coursework and developed and implemented sustained processes for students’ campus and community engagement. She also was responsible for selecting and training AmeriCorps VISTA members for involvement in the community. Mandie is in the process of moving into

her new home in Farragut, where she will live with her husband, Patrick, and her daughter, Easton. Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country.

Dollywood's "Year of the Family" Continues with Even More Time for Family Fun

T

O CELEBRATE summer dur-

ing Dollywood’s “Year of the Family,” the park offers families even more of what they already love – time together at the world’s friendliest theme park. Summer at Dollywood (now through August 6) provides the ideal atmosphere for families to create lifelong memories sure to put a smile on every face. Dollywood celebrates the season with two new attractions, Drop Line and Whistle Punk Chaser, two new stories in The Little Engine Playhouse, spectacular nightly fireworks, and a Dollywood guest favorite, The Gazillion Bubbles Show. Dolly’s Nights of Many Colors, a spectacular synchronized fireworks show, paints a colorful canvas across the Smoky Mountain sky each evening. The fireworks extravaganza lights up the night at 9:30 pm. The Gazillion Bubbles Show is in D.P.’s Celebrity Theater, offering an amazing facility to fill with the “unbubbleievable” tricks and fun of the bubble-making spectacle.

Extended park operating hours from 10 am to 10 pm daily give guests more time to create the perfect summer getaway. Additionally, Dollywood’s hours are extended to midnight for the first time ever on July 1 and 8. “Summer in the Great Smoky Mountains truly is something special,” said Dolly Parton. “When I was growing up, our entertainment was catching lightnin’ bugs and looking up at the stars. We could only dream about what it would be like to take a family vacation together. We had heard about big rides and shows and festivals at places like the World’s Fair, but we never dreamed that it could all be right here in the Smokies! Places like Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood are now everything we could imagine for a family vacation together.” It’s story time again as The Little Engine

Playhouse showcases two new children’s stories, including Coat of Many Colors, based on Parton’s newest children’s book. Coat of Many Colors and Pretend, by Jennifer Plecas, feature sing-along songs that kids of all ages will enjoy. Everyone’s favorite, The Little Engine That Could, comes to the stage with a delightful reminder of what can happen with just a little bit of determination. While Dollywood guests have an amazing amount of entertainment options to enjoy during their visit, they also can experience the park’s award-winning rides in a completely different environment. Once the sun sets, Dollywood’s trademark attractions, like Wild Eagle and Thunderhead, provide a unique experience for those who climb aboard. These rides thrill guests who race through the summer night with no idea which way the track will turn next! UT Professor to Discuss Upcoming Eclipse at Farragut Town Hall

ARK LITTMANN, professor of journalism and electronic media at UT, will discuss the upcoming solar eclipse on Wednesday, July 12, at 6 pm at Farragut Town Hall, located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive. He is the author of the book “Totality: The Great American Eclipses of 2017 and 2024” and has helped lead eclipse expeditions to Canada, Hawaii, Bolivia, Aruba and Turkey. The event is free and open to the public. A solar eclipse, which happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun, will occur on August 21. The last time a total eclipse was visible in the contiguous U.S. was 1979. While everyone in North America plus parts of South America, Africa, and Europe will see at least a partial eclipse, the 70-mile wide path of totality will only pass through 14 U.S. states. Farragut is on the northern edge of the path of totality. The partial phase of the eclipse is expected to begin at 1:04 pm, with totality beginning at 2:33 pm and lasting for one minute and 20 seconds. Explore Nature’s Most Powerful Forces in New Adventure Science Center Traveling Exhibition Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters Now Open

N

ATURAL DISASTERS

are occurring on our planet nearly five times as frequently as the 1970s. In Adventure Science Center’s latest traveling exhibition Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters, all of nature’s forces are on display. In the Nature Unleashed exhibition, the incredible – and somewhat terrifying – power of nature is on display, providing a memorable experience for people to discover how these immense geological and meteorological forces drive our ever-changing world. Developed by The Field Museum in Chicago, Nature Unleashed explores natural disasters through stunning displays, stateof-the-art animations, poignant, large-scale images, and cultural artifacts that reveal the dynamic relationship we have with the Earth. The exhibition helps to illustrate how much we know – and how much we are still learning – about four types of disasters: Earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Highly interactive and immersive, Nature Unleashed goes beyond the sensational headlines to explore Earth’s most impressive natural events. Guests can discover what triggers a volcanic eruption, witness the power of hurricane-force winds, experience the roar of a tornado from within the eye of the storm, monitor earthquakes around the world in real time, and see real objects that tell powerful

stories about natural disasters and about the resilience and creativity of the people who survive and study them. Special Activities: » Tornado Winds: Get first-hand experience in using instruments that measure wind speed. » Cloud in a Bottle: Learn how changes in air pressure creates the conditions for clouds in the sky with this exciting experiment. » Doppler Effect: Discover how Doppler radar is used to track storms while learning how ASC’s Science Educators made their own device. » Special Presentation at noon and 2:30 pm: Storm Preparedness with NOAA. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will be onsite to help guests learn the steps to prepare for potentially dangerous storms. In this exciting presentation, guests will gain insight into how the experts view storm safety. Alongside the Nature Unleashed opening day activities, guests can explore a variety of ways to keep their family safe during Safety Day, sponsored by UL, through special handson activities that explore volcanoes, fire safety, recycling and composting, and more. The UL Mission is Working for a Safer World. UL’s goal on Safety Day is to keep the children in our community safe by educating and empowering them about the world

around them. UL partners with Adventure Science Center to reach a broader audience and share their mission. Entry into the Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters exhibition, special activities and demonstrations, and Safety Day activities are included with the price of general admission. Nature Unleashed will be at the Science Center now through October 29. Supporting Sponsor: TVA. This exhibition and its national tour were developed by The Field Museum, Chicago. Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present the 17th “Arts in the Airport” exhibition, a new selection of artwork from 41 artists in the East Tennessee region. “Arts in the Airport” was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork is exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint now through October 18. Juror Terri Jordan of the Customs House Museum in Clarksville provided this statement about the exhibition: “Tennessee boasts a large talent of artists, and as a museum curator, I find many of these come from the Eastern part of the state. I was pleased with the variety of mediums in the entries I viewed. It is important to not just master the technical skills, but to also create work that has a strong composition, a story behind it or about it, and a sense of ‘holding its own’ in situation. For me, the entries I chose do that. They all have great sense of harmony in color and design and leave me wanting to see more.” The following artists’ works are on display: Debra Lovvorn Belvin, J. Brooks Brann, Sarah Busby, Pat Clapsaddle, Synthia Clark, Bobbie Crews, June Crowe, Jurgen Dopatka, 26

Discover the Art of Local Wood Crafter

John Winter

BY VICKIE SAL ADIN, OWNER OF GALLERY ON MAIN

W

HEN JOHN WINTER relocated to

Sweetwater, accepting a position with the National Forestry Service, little could he have imagined that his budding interest in woodworking would transition into a passion to create wood inlay art. Perhaps it was due in part to John’s forestry career, where he rediscovered the beauty of nature every day while working within the Cherokee National Forest in the Bald River Falls area of Tellico Plains that he received the needed inspiration to pursue his craft. In his spare time, John began working on a wooden boat and doing a little woodworking as well. He began by creating some “Country Christmas” wood ornaments and wood penny banks for kids. The “bug” had bit him, and before long, he began doing wood inlay pictures. Upon the encouragement of his new friends at Gallery on Main, John entered the “Airport Art Show,” then the “Mayor’s Show,” and now he has been invited to do some inlay art for a major hotel in Knoxville. You are encouraged to visit Gallery on Main to view many of John’s pieces that are on display. If you’re planning a visit to Sweetwater, why not plan on spending the day with us to enjoy a “bang up” Fourth of July? Festivities begin at 3 pm with a parade, vendors, and activities for all and fireworks after dark. Also, on August 21, plan on visiting Sweetwater for our Eclipse Festival. Sweetwater will be in the path of totality. Come to Sweetwater and enjoy the fun with vendors and a host of other fun-filled activities. The new Visitor’s Center and City Hall are currently selling the special glasses to allow you to watch the eclipse as it happens, and there will be free family movies in Sweetwater’s Duck Park at the bandstand that evening. We hope to see you in Sweetwater for all of these fun family events and invite you to visit us at Gallery on Main to discover the many works of art on display from dozens of local and regional artists.

We will develop a customized CoolSculpting® treatment plan that addresses your problem areas. Additional sessions may further enhance your results. Your individualized treatment plan will be tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. It’s easy to sit back, relax, and say goodbye to stubborn fat. After we select the area(s) to be treated, the device is positioned on your body, and controlled cooling is applied. During your procedure, you may choose to read, check email, or even take a nap. The CoolSculpting® fat freezing procedure is completely non-surgical, so you can typically return to work and normal activities immediately. You will like what you see. In the weeks and months following your procedure, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. More than four million people have already benefited from CoolSculpting®. Are you ready to be next and to love every view of you? The sooner you set up your consultation, the sooner you’ll see results in the mirror – longterm results in those areas that have resisted all efforts through diet and exercise. CoolSculpting® fat reduction procedure is specifically designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting® procedure is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however, a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Request a one-on-one consultation with us to determine if the CoolSculpting® procedure is right for you. » How much does the CoolSculpting® procedure cost? The price for CoolSculpting® procedures vary depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals. We will help create a customized treatment plan, in person, that’s tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. » How long is each session? How many sessions will I need? We will help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of your CoolSculpting® session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. We may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals. » Where does the fat go? Are the results permanent? Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), your body processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. » What does it feel like? As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment. » Is the CoolSculpting® procedure safe? The CoolSculpting® procedure is FDAcleared for the flank ( love handles), abdomen, and thigh. With more than one million CoolSculpting® treatments performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. » Are there any side effects? During the procedure, you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness, or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, and pain. Rare side effects

may also occur. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting® procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask us if the CoolSculpting® procedure is right for you. » Can I return to normal activities after my treatment? Yes, you can. The CoolSculpting® procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Oftentimes patients return to work after their CoolSculpting® session is finished. » When will I see results? You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment. » Do I need to take special supplements or follow a strict diet and exercise program? No supplements or pills are required, and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. Many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after their CoolSculpting® treatment. It is as if they get a second lease on their body, and they want to start anew again by taking even better care of themselves. » What happens if I gain weight down the road? After seeing the results, many people take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas. SHEP GORDON O

B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

DDS ARE PRETTY GOOD

that unless you’re a real music business geek (or a celebrity chef business geek), you have never heard of Shep Gordon. Shep has been Alice Cooper’s one and only manager for the past 45 years. Before semi-retiring, he managed the careers of Luther Vandross, Ann Murray, Groucho Marx, and single handedly built the celebrity chef market. In 2015, Mike Meyers produced a documentary about Shep entitled Supermensch. The phenomenal response to the film is one of the reasons that prompted Shep to write his autobiography, They Call Me Supermensch.

Alice Cooper and Shep back in the day I called Gordon at his beachfront home in Maui. If you watch the movie, you will see that it was a home that he bought for privacy, serenity, and entertaining. The views are spectacular and seem to be the key to Gordon’s zen-like approach to life these days. Gordon shared the motivations behind writing his book. “It was a combination of things. It was really sparked by being at an event and Anthony Bourdain coming up to me and introducing himself, telling me he had become a book publisher – and not just for his own books with Harper Collins – and he wanted to do a book with me. It sounded like an interesting path. That, combined with the movie, brought a lot of attention to me, and it brought a lot of people sort of looking for answers. ‘How come you’re happy?’ How to 30

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2017

be successful. How to be happy. Big questions that I certainly didn’t feel qualified to give an answer to but thought that maybe if I spent some time doing my own kind of exploration of my life, I would find common themes that I could pass on to someone that might help them.” One of the many surprises in They Call Me Supermensch is learning that none other than Jimi Hendrix is the reason why Gordon got into the artist management business. “Yeah, in sort of a left-handed way, he introduced me to Alice Cooper,” said Gordon. “I was sitting around with him and the Chamber Brothers. They asked me what I was doing for a living, and nothing I was doing was legal. Anthony Bourdain said that I was a ‘pharmaceutical salesman.’ They were great customers, but they wanted to know what I did that was legitimate. I didn’t really do anything, and Jimi asked, ‘Are you Jewish?’ I am, and I answered him honestly. He said, ‘You should be a manager.’ “The Chamber Brothers were sitting there – a couple of them, Willie and Lester – and they said that they had a band from Phoenix living in their basement that needed a manager – Alice Cooper. And that’s how it started some 40 odd years ago.” Because Gordon managed rock stars and chefs, I asked what the differences or similarities are between the music and culinary worlds. “I think they’re almost exactly the same,” said Gordon. “In the end, they all do the same. The culinary art form is so developed. They’re great artists the same way that I think Alice is a great artist. I think Emeril Lagasse is a great artist on many levels. For Alice, it’s lyric writing. For Emeril, it’s recipe writing. For Alice, it’s on the stage. For Emeril, it’s in front of the camera. They both have to play their hits all the time. If Alice does a concert and doesn’t do School’s Out, his audience would be really disappointed. If Emeril didn’t do some Cajun dishes, his audience would be really disappointed. “They also have to invent new stuff. If

Shep, Dalai Lama, and Willie Nelson

Sammy Hagar, Mick Fleetwood, and Shep Alice didn’t write new material, he’d become a thing of the past. Same thing with Emeril. Gotta write new recipes. They both spend the afternoon in their street clothes. Show time comes, and Alice puts on his uniform and Emeril puts on his whites. What the chefs didn’t have when I got started was any way to touch their fans outside their kitchens. I got the Food Network on the air, and I got them selling pots and pans and doing videos of their cooking and selling cookbooks – ways that an Emeril Lagasse fan didn’t have to be in a 100-seat restaurant to be a fan and to live part of the experience. He sells spices. He can make his recipes. “Now they’re starting to get remuneration at the level of rock stars. Emeril gets $300,000 or $400,000 some nights to do big parties just like U2 gets paid fortunes to do their thing. Emeril is making a fortune on QVC just like the artists are making their money.” Shep Gordon may be semi-retired, but rest assured that whatever he touches will turn to gold. Keep an eye on this guy. You can read the extended version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty -six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music. Photos courtesy of Shep Gordon

HERE WAS A TIME when cities

like Paris, Berlin, New York, or Tokyo were at the top of many travelers’ lists. The glamour, the glitz, and the history of these cities lured many, but times have changed, and more people are eager to discover some of the lesser known gems. Cities that, though smaller and less renowned, are just as stunning and full of surprises. One of these treasures is Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also known as Mill City, the Mini-Apple, or the City of Lakes, Minneapolis is home to a vibrant music scene, miles of bike trails, a community of creative entrepreneurs, and an energy that you just can’t find anywhere else. It’s true that a lot of people shy away from the winters, which can be fierce, but those who go during the summer usually leave with plans to return. Here are five reasons why.

1. The amazing music scene With large venues such as Target Field and U.S. Bank Stadium, bigname superstars regularly visit the city. But locals will tell you it’s the numerous smaller venues that make a night out in Minneapolis such an unforgettable experience. From the legendary First Avenue, where Prince began his career, to smaller settings like the Fine Line Music Café or Dakota Jazz Club, there’s live music for everyone. 2. A new sports stadium When the U.S. Bank Stadium opened last year, Minneapolis had a new home for the Minnesota Vikings and could brag about having one of the most state-of-the-art football stadiums in the country. But football is only part of the story. In this sports-crazed town, you’re only ever a few miles away from world-class hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, and lacrosse. 3. An innovative culture With dozens of theater companies, art museums, galleries, and creative agencies, Minneapolis has earned a reputation as a city oozing with creative energy. And it happens on all levels. Take the new Radisson Red Minneapolis. Located right in the heart of downtown, Radisson Red was designed to revolutionize the travel experience and enhance the stay experience through art, music, and fashion. In addition to the stunning mural in the lobby by local artist, Adam Turman, the re-energized rooms feature inspired designs. If guests get hungry, the OUIBar + KTCHN features freshly prepared local fare, and an expert staff that can tell you all you need to know about the city.

4. Food and brews An epicenter of dining, Minneapolis has kept pace with the coastal dining scene and, in many respects, has outpaced other cities due to the availability of local food from the surrounding area. If you’re a beer lover, be sure to block off an afternoon or three to tour the many nationally recognized tap houses in town, including the funky Dangerous Man Brewing Co. and Young Joni, where the head chef Ann Kim was recently honored by the James Beard Foundation. 5. A city that caters to the outdoor adventurer Visitors are usually surprised by how many people they see biking around Minneapolis, and they can enjoy the hundreds of miles of bike lanes and trails by renting a bike from one of the many kiosks around the city. If you want to mix things up a bit, numerous outfitters offer kayak tours of the Mississippi, or you can rent a stand-up paddle board at one of the many city lakes. We could go on, but it might be more fun to make your own list of favorites by visiting Minneapolis yourself. Summer is here, so book a room at the new Radisson Red Minneapolis, stay in the heart of downtown, and discover one of America’s great cities.

GRADUATION TO THE HACK TOWER

W

E ALL HAVE ENJOYED watching bald eagles Eleanor and Roosevelt as first-time parents. Both showed remarkable skills as they learned to care for their eaglets, and ER2 and ER3 – now seven weeks old – have grown strong and healthy. Last month the eaglets were gently gathered up, given a physical examination, and then taken to the AEF hack tower overlooking Douglas Lake to prepare for their release into the Great Smoky Mountains when they are approximately 13 weeks of age. Together, inside their new 8’x8’x8’ nesting compartment, the eaglets’ view will be a natural setting of the lake and surrounding trees. They will acclimate to their new surroundings during the next few weeks and, after their release, could even return with a mate in a few years to raise babies of their own. While in this lake setting, the eaglets will not come into contact with humans, but the AEF caregivers will be there, unknown to the eaglets, to bring them fresh food and

American Eagle Foundation staff, including AEF Founder and President Al Cecere, with ER2 and ER3

water each day (through sliding drawers) and to make sure they are doing well. The AEF’s hacking program has resulted in the release of 150 young bald eagles and 12 golden eagles from 1992 through 2016. For more information, visit www.eagles.org/ what-we-do/repopulate/eagle-hacking.

Landscape Lighting Design: Dramatic Shadow Patterns

T

HE CONTRAST between

shadows and light can be used to create a whole new world. Dramatic Visual Appeal Landscape lighting projects move from simple architectural and greenscape highlighting to full blown works of art we call Nightscaping®. Dramatic yet tasteful, bold yet naturally integrated into your outdoor lighting scenes, the use of shadows can create depth, interest, and life, even in the dullest of landscapes. Our hand-crafted steel bollards are amazing works of art when viewed by day. At night, these modest design masterpieces transform your property into a wondrous paradise. Dramatic contrast can also be used to emphasize or reduce architectural features and make ordinary shrubs and trees appear as perfectly placed and balanced organic focal points. Natural Visual Effects Organic shadows provide depth and contrast to your property’s landscape lighting designs. During the day, you may notice how the light from the sun or a bright full moon comes down through the leaves of trees, casting natural shadow patterns onto the ground. That interplay of shadow and light

gives you a better sense of the depth of your outdoor spaces. The designers at Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting are trained to recreate natural nightscapes that rival even the most breathtaking moonlit nights. Lighthouse® landscape lighting designers create these natural scenes while keeping the source of this light mystery. The Illusion of Perfection Even the most well-conceived landscape designs may contain undesirable elements. Through shadows and contrast, your Lighthouse® landscape lighting designer can re-imagine your property in a way that highlights its most appealing features while erasing any landscape or architectural blemishes.

At Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting, we can help you transform your dimly lighted home into a spectacular panorama that accentuates all of the qualities that truly makes your home and its surrounding landscape unique. Call us today to discover for yourself just how a landscape and architectural lighting plan from Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting can transform your home’s nighttime appearance from dull and dreary to a dramatic showcase look.

July in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

HOW ARE THINGS

in your yard? Our plants have certainly been battered during the last couple of years. The exceptional drought from last year continues to take a toll on trees, shrubs, and perennials. Erratic temperatures and high moisture caused some plants to get confused about what time of year it was, and some were running about three weeks early. High humidity has also turned our area into an insect and fungus breeding soup! As a result, there are several things on our list this month. » Take a good look at your trees. Did you sustain damage during the spring storms? Look for breaks and cracks in branches that you might not have noticed before. They may not have been visible immediately after the storm, so check for sections of the tree that look stressed, which could indicate a damaged branch. » We have had several instances of customers who had established shrubs that flushed out in the

spring and maybe even bloomed beautifully and then died. Blame the drought. Other customers had shrubs that never grew leaves at all. Again, blame the drought. Many people simply did not realize the amount of water that a plant can take up. Large trees and water lovers like willows and birches can drink 35 gallons per day. Even smaller shrubs can drink five gallons a day. » How about perennials? Some that had been in the ground for years simply failed to emerge. Before you plant another in the same spot, however, you may want to dig down and see what is going on. A dried out root ball puts blame on the drought. A missing root ball puts blame on a vole (field mouse). A root ball that still looks ok means the plant has just chosen to stay dormant for a year or so but may come back. Hostas are especially prone to “resting” for a couple of years! » Since I am on the topic of perennials, now is the time to cut back tall, fall-flowering perennials

to about half their size. You also need to keep them watered if Mother Nature turns the spigot off again. » What is happening with your vegetables? Powdery mildew is the biggest problem I’m seeing this year, along with some serious insect outbreaks. Remove diseased foliage to discourage the spread of disease. Give us a call if you have a question about treatment options. » Some of the annuals in containers or in the ground may be looking a little rough. Try cutting them back and fertilizing them. If that doesn’t work, compost them and put in some fresh ones. » Keep your birdbaths and feeders clean and full. If you are having trouble attracting birds, give us a call. You may need to move them, clean them, or change seed. Before I finish for this month, there are two issues I would like to address. Num ber one is t he overuse of chemicals. Yes, I do suggest you keep an eye on your plants so that small problems do not turn into large problems. Some of you, however, seem to think that any little spot or insect on a plant should be treated immediately with the strongest product available. No! Plants are living things, and just as all humans catch the occasional cold, all plants will get the occasional bug or fungus. Leave it alone unless it begins to affect the health of the plant. The overuse of chemicals is having the same consequences in plants that it has in humans: Resistance. Insecticides are now only about 30% effective on mealybugs and some other insects. We are also destroying our pollinators. Number two is the advance of Rose Rosette. I don’t think some of you realize the seriousness of the problem. This disease has the capacity to wipe out roses entirely in a decade, and yet I pass houses and businesses every day with diseased plants just sitting there. Put a plastic bag over the plant and then pull it up by the roots. (The mite that spreads the disease will leave the plant within 15 minutes of it being uprooted, hence the need for a bag.) Dispose of it immediately. The mite can also travel up to two miles on the wind, so one infected plant can contaminate every rose within two miles. Can we please be responsible plant owners and do the right thing? That’s all for this month. As always, don’t hesitate to call or stop by if you have a question. We are here to help you have a beautiful yard!

shade gardening is the opportunity to have a taste of Tennessee woodlands in our own backyards. Two common forest flowers found in Tennessee are Heuchera and Tiarella. Better known as coral bells or alum root, Heuchera has several species that vary in distribution across the state and are more common in Middle and East Tennessee. Tiarella, or foamflower, is most common in East Tennessee. Many selections of these and other species not native to Tennessee can be found in nurseries; however, as close members of the Saxifragaceae family, some of their respective, distinct attributes can be found in the intergeneric cross x Heucherella. This hybrid commonly goes by the name foamy bells in the U.S., which gets a nod for logic but receives no naming bonus points for creativity. As a general statement, foamy bells bring together the flowering look of coral bells and some of leaf patterns and shapes of foamflower. Often you’ll see these crosses with dark patterns in the center of the leaves or a more deeply cut or lobed leaf than most coral bells. In reality, this is an oversimplification. You can now find bronze and purple leaves and even silver tones in foamy bells (like ‘Cracked Ice’) and a range of flower colors and characteristics. We tend to focus on plant color and shape for obvious reasons, but the diversity in native species in both of these 40

parents provides the opportunity for crosses that thrive in a range of conditions. Site selection and management are important to enjoying foamy bells over the long term. When selecting a site, keep in mind that often these plants reside natively in the understory of forests. Foamflower, more than coral bells, tends to prefer very moist locations and is found on stream banks with higher levels of organic matter. Some coral bells have more ability to thrive in more stressful environments, so such parents can be chosen to bring to the cross better tolerance of hot and humid summer conditions, which were often lacking in early Heucherella introductions. Recent breeding efforts have used Heuchera villosa as a parent, which was an important step in delivering foamy bells that perform better in Tennessee-type climates. Cultivar names, such as ‘Alabama Sunrise’ and ‘Sweet Tea’, are some examples of these crosses, and their names give clues as to potential adaptation to our types of summers. Light shade to part sun is going to be a good choice for most Tennessee gardens, and moderate rather than high light levels may increase foliage color contrasts for these late spring to early summer bloomers. Dividing the plants every few years will also maintain their longevity in the garden. Good soil drainage, though, is essential for whichever of these species or cultivars you are growing. Poor drainage, especially

in the winter, can damage these plants, so avoid sites where heavy soils retain water around the plant. Raised beds can increase drainage, and container growing can be an excellent option for some of these beautiful specimens. In fact, some of the most impressive displays I have seen were on porches in containers where moisture and light can be tailored. Foamy bells and their cousins can be found at all three locations of the UT Gardens. Stroll from the main entrance of the Knoxville gardens toward the Children’s Garden and you’ll find some in those shady plantings along the path, and they can be found in some slightly protected sites around the building in Crossville. In Jackson, you can find Heucherella and many other shade options around the gazebo. Select a welcoming spot in your garden (or porch), ensure good drainage, and bring a bit of the hills home with a Heucherella. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg. Photo by N. Bumgarner, courtesy UTIA

To Estate or Not To Estate B Y B EC K Y H U N T, C O - O W N E R OF PREMIERE CONSIGNMENT

A N ESTATE SALE,

also referred to as a tag sale, in some areas of our country is most often used to liquidate the personal possessions of either a family or estate. Estate sales are usually the most efficient way to sell unneeded items resulting from downsizing, moving, bankruptcy, the passing of a homeowner, or divorce.

An efficient way to dispose of personal possessions, estate sales require a great deal of preparation that can become overwhelming if you are unfamiliar with how to properly organize a sale of this scope. Much more involved than a yard or garage sale, a successful estate sale needs to be well organized. Items for sale should be divided into categories. Sales items are often catalogued. Displays are typically set up in the home with valuable items, particularly smaller pieces, displayed separately for security purposes. Next, you need to price your items, set your sale dates, advertise, then prepare yourself for the crowds of buyers. Sound daunting? An estate sale can be overwhelming, which is why a growing number of Tellico area residents are turning to the professionals at Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village for assistance in holding a sale. At Premiere Consignment, we offer our clients a complete turnkey estate sale experience. We help organize, display, price, advertise, and sell those no longer needed personal items. We remain with you every step of the way to make certain that your sale is the complete success you’ve envisioned it to be. But there are other ways Premiere Consignment can help, too. We can place remaining unsold items in our retail showroom for sale or use our extensive eBay sales platform to sell a variety of other sales items, such as collectibles, to buyers across the country and the world. Experienced in estate sales, why not let Premiere Consignment help you make your sale the success it deserves to be? Call me today for answers to your questions or to schedule your estate sale. Also, mark your calendars for July 13th, 14th, and 15th for our next estate sale.

OOKING TO MAKE a few

changes around the house? A fresh coat of paint can make a big difference in the look of your home and how you feel living in it. But unless you’re a color expert, it’s hard to know what colors are best among the endless array of options. A great place to start is by understanding the psychology behind various colors so you can achieve the look and create the effect you want in each room. “Color is such an important factor in setting or improving our moods; it greatly influences human emotion and behavior,” said Dr. Sally Augustin, a color psychologist who applies science-based insights to how we experience colors. “The brain interacts with color in a variety of ways, from calming to energizing. By applying color psychology to your paint selections, you can make each room evoke the emotions you desire.” Most people talk about neutrals like black and white, according to a new color study conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Sherwin-Williams through listening to social media conversation about colors mentioned with areas of the home. But when asked directly, the majority of participants say more vibrant colors should be used throughout the home, such as blue, red, and green. Based on this new research and Dr. Augustin’s insights on color psychology, here are some ideas on choosing colors for painting projects: » In the mood for blue: If you’re drawn in by beautiful blues, you’re in good company. Sixty-two percent of Americans select blue as one of the colors they like the most. This strong preference for blue is consistent across genders, locations, and age, making a blue like Adriatic Sea SW 6790 a good choice if you’re considering more vibrant colors or if you’re painting a room in a home that you plan to sell soon. “No matter where you go on the planet, people are most likely to say that their favorite color is blue,” said Dr. Augustin. “In our primordial past, blue was linked to good things in our lives. It is the color of the sky on a fair weather day and also a color of a watering hole seen from a distance.” » Black comes back: It may be surprising that black is the second most popular color (32%) and is especially liked among millennials at 41%. Many have fallen in love with darker tones again, and dark black like Tricorn Black SW 6258 and even charcoal, navy, and deep jewel tones are all gaining in popularity, adding urban sophistication to 44

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2017

a wide range of spaces, from living rooms to kitchens. » What green really means: Generations see green hues differently. Millennials associate it with energy (33% compared to 24% of Gen Xers and baby boomers). Boomers are more likely than millennials to associate green with calmness (26% versus 20%). When it comes to the psychology of green, the color seems to enhance creative thinking, making a green such as Derbyshire SW 6741 a good option for a study or for a stimulating playroom. » Raving for red: According to Dr. Augustin, since red is also the color of many fine wines, painting a wall Rave Red SW 6608 in a dining room can appropriately call wine to mind. Red also offers people a burst of strength, making it an effective color choice for spaces like laundry rooms, where “heavy lifting” is done. According to the survey, almost half of Americans (49%) said the most associated emotion with the color red is excitement. » Cheery vibes with yellow: Forty-two percent of Americans associate yellow with

happiness. The color yellow is also psychologically linked to physical warmth. Other golden colors that are a bit darker, such as Cut the Mustard SW 6384, would work in a kitchen dining area, as warm colors stimulate appetite and can make a space seem cozy. » What’s right about white: The top feeling most Americans associate with white is calmness (34%). In color psychology, white also signals cleanliness, so shades of white can be good choices for the bath, laundry, or anywhere in your home that you want to add brightness. For more tips and ideas on how to spruce up your home with paint color, visit www. swpaintingweek.com. About The National Painting Week Color Psychology Study This survey was conducted online within the United States between March 23-27, 2017, among 2,201 adults (aged 18 and over) by Harris Poll on behalf of SherwinWilliams via its Quick Query omnibus product. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region, and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them in line with their actual proportions in the surveyed populations. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. Social results were obtained by harvesting 12,089 public geo-tagged social media posts in the U.S. between January 1 - April 13, 2017, where selected colors appear within two words of areas of the home.

the sun stronger and the days longer, it’s time to rediscover the endless ways for you, your family, and friends to enjoy summertime fun right at home in your own backyard. But can you really enjoy your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? If your outdoor spaces don’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. While many homeowners across the country are making significant investments in their homes by creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weatherproof, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often prevent them from fully enjoying their home’s new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade while allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios, especially in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evening. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics of your home, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity is the variety of custom color and wood grain finishes that help to seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. Your screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces for a summertime of fun with friends and family, visit www. phantomscreens.com.

estate market in Knoxville, it can be hard to find the perfect home with the right location, size, and style. A home may have the perfect interior, but maybe the commute is just too long! Maybe the beautiful lakefront view is perfect, but the house screams the ’90s! It can be frustrating to look for a home with your dream kitchen or master suite, but don’t lose hope in the search! There are tons of homes that may look uninviting to the average eye and not immediately grab your attention, but they have great potential. Renovating a run-down home can be a great option in this market, but it does require you to look beyond the ugly. For most people, this is not an easy task, and that’s where we come in! With our trained eyes and our 3D programs, the designers at Shae Design Studio can turn your outdated finishes, cabinetry, and lighting into what you have always envi-

The project depicted here is an excellent example of a space that was completely transformed to create a warm, inviting environment. With outdated finishes and unique lights, the house wouldn’t have pulled your attention. But looking at the space after renovation, it becomes one for people to gather and enjoy one another’s company. Not only does the space feel more inviting, but the circulation paths are more

functional, the storage has multiplied, and there’s a fantastic prep space. The right design can create a more efficient, appealing space that you will fall in love with. Once you can see past the ugly, Shae Design Studio would love to work with you and create the unexpected space you didn’t know was there.

homeowners as the cleaning (actually washing) of Oriental rugs. In fact, most Oriental rug owners believe that their rugs are very similar to their wall-to-wall cousins. Trust me – nothing could be further from the truth. That’s why I created a short three-and-ahalf minute online video to demonstrate why my proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process is far superior to the other cleaning alternatives you see advertised. Our process has been designed by me personally after my many years of first-hand experience. Also, I am comfortable in saying that I believe this proprietary 11-step rug washing process offers rug owners an unparalleled level of cleaning that you can see for yourself. Not convinced? Then I invite you to check out our informative video at www.superiorofknoxville.com. So what’s the big deal? Well, while most wall-towall carpeting in homes today are manufactured from permanently dyed, synthetic fibers that can be safely cleaned using a variety of cleaning processes, their Oriental rug cousins are a completely different animal. These hand-woven Oriental rugs use all-natural fibers such as wool and organic dyes and can be permanently damaged if subjected to the same cleaning systems used to clean today’s wall-to-wall carpeting. Our West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique combines our more than 30 years of cleaning experience with our proprietary, state-ofthe-art, 11-step rug washing technology to provide you with the safety and peace of mind that you deserve when cleaning your fine Oriental rugs that may be destined to become a family heirloom. RIENDS OF THE SMOKIES

recently received grants for environmental education programs in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) from the Arconic Foundation and the Richard Haiman National Parks Foundation. The Arconic Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to fund STEM initiatives for educating inner city and underserved students. The grant helps provide opportunities for teachers to enhance their STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education at schools in the inner city of Knoxville and other underserved schools in Knox, Blount, and Sevier Counties whose students have never visited the park. The STEM initiative includes two workshops for 60 teachers who can then use park education materials back in their classrooms or bring their students to the park for field trips during the 2017-18 school year. Four additional “Teachers in Parks” from inner city or underserved schools will participate this summer in hands-on scientific studies and assist with summertime ranger

education programs while also gaining information about how park curriculum assists with inquiry-based learning and STEM education. The grant also includes bus stipends for 40 field trips with up to 60 students each. The Richard Haiman National Parks Foundation awarded $21,500 in grants to the park’s non-profit partner, with $1,500 helping to supply backcountry privies and $20,000 for the Parks As Classrooms program. The Richard Haiman National Parks foundation has contributed more than $200,000 towards environmental education through Parks As Classrooms since 1999. “Parks as Classrooms reinforces the learning concepts that are the curriculum goals for the children,” said Nigel Fields, Chief of Resource Education at GSMNP. “It’s real school, but it’s science the way you always hoped it could be - hands-on, using the five senses… well, maybe even the sixth sense… the sense of wonder. Through the support of the Haiman and Arconic Foundations, we are achieving these goals for both students and teachers.” “We are so thankful for the support of the Arconic Foundation and the Richard Haiman National Parks Foundation,” said Sarah

Weeks, Director of Development at Friends of the Smokies. “Grants like these make all the difference for students to pursue further education and careers in STEM fields, especially those who have never enjoyed the Great Smoky Mountains in their own backyards. Our organization is proud to fund outstanding programs like this.” Arconic is the recently renamed component of Alcoa, which focuses on engineering products for the aerospace and automotive industries. The goal of Arconic Foundation is to advance STEM education and training worldwide, with a special emphasis on engaging and creating access for underrepresented and underserved groups. The Richard Haiman National Parks Foundation was created in 1997 and has generously funded projects in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as Yosemite, Yellowstone, Acadia, and Shenandoah. Friends of the Smokies is an official nonprofit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised more than $57 million to support critical park programs and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. on one site, in two different counties, in three buildings with three different names, and is 175 years old? In Grainger County, Tennessee, in July 1842, 14 members (one noted as Grace, a colored woman) of Cedar Ford United Baptist Church petitioned to establish a Baptist church at Liberty. The church was officially constituted on August 2, 1842. Elder William Hickle was called as first pastor (he would serve five terms as pastor), and an additional 10 members were added, one by enrollment, two by letter, the remainder by experience. At the next meeting on the fourth Saturday in August 1842, nine more members were added, eight by experience and one by enrollment. On April 1, 1844, James Salling donated one acre of land in what was then District 15 of Grainger County to trustees Charles Scaggs, Issac C. Dyer, and William Colvin (and their successors) for use of the United Baptist Church of Christ at Liberty. Residents of portions of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger, and Knox counties petitioned the Tennessee Legislature on January 3, 1850, to establish a new county. The formation of the new county proved tedious as a group of Knox County residents filed a petition resisting its establishment. Though the first session of quarterly court met on February 6, 1854, at Liberty Meeting House, a petition in late 1855 spearheaded by Attorney Horace Maynard failed to result in the official incorporation of Union as a county in the State of Tennessee until 1856. The name of the new county’s seat was changed from Liberty to Maynardville in his honor. Consequently, the United Baptist Church of Christ at Liberty (with its log constructed Liberty Meeting House) became known as Maynardville Baptist Church in September 1856. In 1873, the church worked with the local Masonic Lodge to contract with N. A. Acuff for construction of its second structure, a two-story frame building – the church occupied the bottom floor and the Lodge the upper. The church’s share of the construction cost was $1,047.36. From 1918 through October 1920, Rev. Neil Acuff, father of country music legend Roy Acuff, served as pastor. Roy remained a member of Maynardville Baptist Church until his death on November 23, 1992. Near the end of his life, Mr. Acuff donated $10,000 to the church. This money was used to purchase a six-foot Schumann piano and a Rodgers organ. These instruments, still in use today, were dedicated in a special service on May 28, 1989. 54

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2017

By 1920, the church was interested in purchasing the Masonic Lodge’s interest in its building. In June 1944, the Lodge agreed to a sale price of $200. By July 1945, the second building was in the process of being torn down. In November of that year, a committee was formed to contact an architect to draw plans for a 40 by 65 foot building. The building was constructed from foundation to roof with cinder block, with a brick veneer on the outside, and plastered interior walls, gallantly sporting 13 lovely amber Gothic windows. This building was constructed for approximately $9,000 and dedicated in June 1949 for the sole use of the church. In the 1970s, the church received upgrades such as air conditioning and renovations to the sanctuary that added to the church’s comfort and beauty. Additional property was acquired adjacent to the church property, and a parsonage was completed in 1972. In 1996, construction began on a 4,800 square foot educational wing and fellowship hall. During this renovation, a second layer of brick veneer and stucco was added to the original structure. This two-story addition was completed in May 1997. The Northern Baptist Association of

the Southern Baptist Convention offered Maynardville Baptist Church the opportunity to assume the name “First Baptist Church of Maynardville,” as it is indeed the first Baptist church in what is now the City of Maynardville, Tennessee. As such action would prevent another church at a later time to inaccurately deem itself the first Baptist church in Maynardville, the church voted to change its name for the third time in 1984. So has existed on one site in two different counties, in three buildings and three different names, this church served by 44 pastors during 175 years. The First Baptist Church of Maynardville stands as a monument of the tie that binds this generation of worshippers to that small band of saints who in 1842 had a vision of a little heaven on earth. May those who follow find us as faithful. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties. References: Graves, K. G. & McDonald, W. P. (1978). Bridging the Summer Learning Gap:

Travel & Education A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

“T

HE WORLD is a book,

and those who do not travel read only one page.” - Saint Augustine The benefits of travel have been written about for centuries, connecting the experience with cultivating awareness and expanding perspectives. The story of travel connotes a journey of self-discovery. The introduction of every new culture is the beginning of a new mindset. For many, travel is at once a de-centering and unifying experience. The encounter of something new leads to being fully present, evaluating preconceptions, and rewiring beliefs. The effects of travel on adults is well documented. But how does travel affect children, who rely so much on stability and who, in many ways, already live in the moment and experience the world with eyes wide open? Does the disruption of place hinder or complement a child’s intellectual development? It’s been eight years since the U.S. Department of Education took a closer look at the effects of travel on childhood education. In a 2009 study, which analyzed findings from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of the Kindergarten Class database, family life was assessed, as were summer activities and school experiences. The study collected data from 21,600 children from grades K-5; a subset of 5,047 parents also were asked about their family excursions during the summer. Study results showed improved standardized test scores in reading, math, and general knowledge from the children who traveled during

the summer with their families. The study findings are import a nt , b e ca u se t h ey p rov i d e a n alternative to learning loss in kids during the long summer months away from school. Kids who don’t engage in activities during the summer are at risk of falling more than four months behind their peers. This statistic goes all the way up the ladder to college students. Today many parents consider the arc of the travel experience - seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, attending concerts, and visiting historic sites, monuments, and art museums - as an opportunity to not only enhance the emotional depth and patience of their children, but their academic outcomes as well. As a result, some parents are opting to “world school” their children during the summer, with noted benefits of bonding and spending quality time with family, building an interest and respect for other cultures, and making learning interesting and deeply engaging. Can we simply conclude that vacations make kids smarter? We reached out to travel expert Jim Menge for the answer. Menge has been to more than 100 countries and is a believer of the benefits of travel. Menge is also the President of Rovia, an industryleading travel and lifestyle service provider, headquartered in Plano, Texas. “Not necessarily,” said Menge. “But the immersive experience of travel and all the delight and disruption that go along with it can have a real effect on childhood learning. And when kids start early, they broaden their

horizons and develop a real appreciation for the world they live in.” If summer travel can have such a profound influence over the intellectual development of kids in grades K-5, what effect, if any, does it have on college students? In the year 2000, the University System of Georgia, comprising 35 institutions, conducted a 10-year study to see if study abroad contributed to the academic performance of college students. They found the experience not only resulted in improved academic performance, higher GPAs, and graduation rates, but it benefited the performance of at-risk students as well. Clearly, travel and education can create powerful combinations. If you have children, consider taking a vacation during school breaks and during summer months. It will add to their development and character. And if you have kids in college, study abroad has become an even more compelling option. The shared experience of travel can bring families together, creating bonds and lifelong memories. It’s time to consider the data that promotes travel as the ticket to a world of increased engagement and enhanced academic performance. Bon voyage!

grab one’s attention right out of the musical chute. Sometimes their music must grow on you. Other times you’ll love some aspects of their work, but other parts turn you off. In the case of Texas born and bred Ruthie Foster, her voice, musicianship, and songwriting mastery will grab you from the get-go and won’t let you go. To say that the woman has the voice of an angel may sound a bit hokey, but it would, in fact, be an understatement. Her amazing talent has placed her on stage with the Allman Brothers, as well as singing with such greats as Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi. She’s received the Living Blues Critic’s Award for Female Blues Artist of the Year, the Grand Prix du Disque Award from the Académie Charles-Cros in France, seven Blues Music Awards, and three Austin Music Awards.

Foster recently chatted with me about her latest CD, Joy Comes Back. I asked about her church related musical background and influences while growing up in Gause, Texas. “Well, it was Baptist – the Missionary Baptist Church. The artists that I did a lot of were Dorothy Norwood on guitar, a lot of Andre Crouch. So yeah, that was the stuff that I was listening to growing up. We would take songs like Pass Me Not Oh Gentle Savior and speed it up a little bit and give it a little guitar riff. We’d push the limits as far as we could go with the sisters in the church. They kinda liked it, though.” Foster began chatting about her new CD by explaining its title. “It was the title of one of the songs on the CD,” she said. “We looked through them all and thought, ‘Well, this one pretty much says it all,’ because this CD came about in the middle of a big transition. My personal life was changing. I was moving out of a longterm relationship and trying to figure out how to co-parent a small one in a respectful way. Turning into my 50s, getting well into my 50s… that was a big transition. I turned 53 a few weeks ago. That was the age that my mother passed, so getting to that age was something really different.” When asked which song she would use as a calling card, so to speak, to entice someone to purchase the CD, Foster said, “Probably War Pigs, just because it’s different. Ha! Ha! My version! A lot of them, really. Good Sailor that was written by Grace (Pettis) because that, again, is saying what I wanted to say. Working Woman is another great one. That’s my Phenomenal Woman. It’s the new version of woman power. Yeah, those are the ones that stick out.” The one compelling question begging to be asked: Why cover War Pigs? “Ha! Ha! It’s not a statement at all for me. I

always thought the song was a blues song. It’s like, what would it be like if Son House was in a room somewhere with his resonator and stompin’ the floor and doing what he does with that big, booming voice and just singing it, and Ozzy walked in and they decided to just sit down and have a little acoustical moment?” Since Foster revealed that the CD is revealing and introspective, I asked which song was the most personal to her. “Probably Forgiven, the last cut, because it really started with that song,” she said. “That song has a way of opening up – it had a way of opening up my spirit and touching me in a way that I didn’t expect at all. So it kinda started with Forgiven. Learning how to forgive myself. All the shame and blame that goes along with leaving a relationship – especially with a kid involved. It was HUGE.” As for what she hopes people take away from Joy Comes Back, Foster said, “That this is my journey and that I am a real person even though I do these kinds of inspirational songs. I know that a lot of our shows are very uplifting. But, at the same time, I want folks to know that yeah, I’ve been there and I’ve been there recently and had to re-learn to get myself back up again. If anything, to give people permission – it’s okay, it’s okay to be down. But the deal is to surround yourself with true friends, first of all, and know that time is a huge healer. And that time, plus music, is a beautiful thing! Keep music in your life. I think it’s really important.” Enjoy Ruthie Foster’s healing music on her latest disc, Joy Comes Back, and keep up with the latest on her at www.RuthieFoster.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

HIS SUMMER Biltmore is

hosting a number of limited-time displays, including a Toy Model of Biltmore House, as well as Vanderbilt Travels Railway, an outdoor model train exhibit highlighting the travels of George Vanderbilt. Toy Model of Biltmore House Designed and built by members of the Ohio Kentucky Indiana Lego User Group, the model of America’s largest home is threeand-a-half feet tall and almost 10 feet long. Creator Mark Stephens spent more than 600 hours piecing together about 50,000 toy bricks to create the Biltmore House replica. This model is on display in the Wine Shop in Antler Hill Village. The exhibit also includes a replica display of Lodge Gate, the arched gateway at the main entrance of Biltmore. About 3,700 of its total 6,525 toy bricks are “cheese wedge” pieces, strategically placed to recreate the iconic arch shape and texture of the historic structure’s roof. Creator Sean Lehmkuhl spent 175 hours on this replica, which is on

display in Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate. Vanderbilt Travels Railway In addition to the toy model of Biltmore House, Antler Hill Village is hosting Vanderbilt Travels Railway, a 250-foot model train display highlighting George Vanderbilt’s travels with hand-crafted architectural elements made from leaves, twigs, and other natural materials. The display was created by Applied Imagination, a nationally-recognized, awardwinning crew of artists, botanical architects, and landscape designers. They have produced countless public garden exhibits, seasonal displays, and garden railways. In the display, five model trains run along five track loops, passing by miniature versions of the Biltmore Rail Depot, the USS Vanderbilt Steamship, Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triomphe, London Bridge, and more. Both exhibits are on display through Labor Day and are included in admission to Biltmore. Purchase tickets in advance at www.biltmore.com, or call 800-411-3812 or visit the Reception and Ticketing Services Center at Biltmore.

» July 14: Tamara Brown: “Tribute to Amy Winehouse” Multi-talented singer and instrumentalist, Tamara Brown, is no stranger to AA5, having performed here numerous times with Aftah Party and other groups as well, but this will be her first time as the featured performer. Earlier this year, at The Red Piano Lounge, she performed her “Tribute to Amy Winehouse,” the 5-time Grammy award winner who died tragically at a young age. It was such a wonderful success that we just had to bring it to AA5. Backing her up is a sensational band, led by her husband, pianist and composer Keith Brown, and featuring Kenneth Brown on drums, David Slack on bass, Vance Thompson on trumpet, Will Boyd on saxophones, Jeremy Wright on guitar, and Cynthia Green on vocals. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 with membership or student ID, and free for ages 17 and under. » July 21: Boys’ Night Out

Boys’ Night Out was organized in 1983 with the goal of recreating the authentic performances of the Rhythm & Blues and Carolina beach music that had been extremely popular in the south during the late 1960s. They have provided musical back-up for R&B greats Percy Sledge (When a Man Loves a Woman), Archie Bell (Do the Tighten-Up), and Clifford Curry (She Shot a Hole in My Soul) and have opened shows for The Impressions, Marcia Ball, The Tams, B.J. Thomas, The Platters, and more. With the recent deaths of two prominent band members, guitarist Jeff Ginsburg in 2014 and lead singer C. Vaughn Leslie last fall, they have regrouped in order to carry on. The Boys now have a girl, Kathy Hill, who shares singing duties with former Soul Sanction vocalist, Bill Capshaw, and they’re still keeping the beach music in their soul. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 with membership or student ID, and free for ages 17 and under.

» July 28: Mighty Blue Mighty Blue was formed as a blues band back in 2005. Guitarist and singer, Michael James, is the only remaining founding member, and the band’s musical repertoire has expanded as Mighty Blue’s lineup has morphed and evolved throughout the years. They still play a heapin’ helpin’ of blues, but their musical menu now includes generous portions of swing and soul, with a dash of funk to keep things spiced up. The current version of Mighty Blue includes James on guitar/vocals, Bob Dean on drums/vocals, Joel Seaton on electric bass/vocals, Neil Gillespie on keyboards/vocals, “Super” Dave Eckman on saxophone, and vocalist Chelsea Samples, who is the “sizzle on the steak.” Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 with membership or student ID, and free for ages 17 and under. Smartphone Market Responds to Senior Users A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

S

MARTPHONE TECHNOLOGY may

seem complicated and flashy, but don’t believe anyone who says it’s only for the young. In fact, 73% of those 50 to 59 years old now own a smartphone, according to a 2016 survey from AARP. Going one step further, a recent study of smartphone user habits by the Pew Research Center concludes that 92% of those aged 50 and above now use text messaging, 80% use their phones to access the Internet, and 87% use them to send and receive email. Still, a significant smartphone generation gap exists within the baby boomer set. While smartphone owners 50 to 59 regularly perform common daily tasks and even occasionally play a game on their smartphones, AARP’s study noted adults 60 to 69 are far more likely to rely on a laptop or desktop computer for email or Internet use and tend to avoid apps and games altogether. Obstacles to smartphone enjoyment It’s no great mystery why certain baby boomers have been hesitant to fully embrace smartphone technology. Traditionally, mobile phones have simply not been designed with seniors in mind. Rather, they are designed for the larger share of the market represented by younger users, who grew up playing high-tech games, surfing the web, and using touchscreens. Software interfaces are often not particularly senior friendly. Small content size and busy screens can be difficult to read and comprehend. The challenge of navigating multiple menu levels is simply not intuitive for many older users. The small physical size of many devices, and the even smaller size of things like number keys and icons, present challenges that can make smartphones frustrating for seniors to use and sometimes even seem a little intimidating. Growing choices to satisfy senior needs Fortunately, the wireless industry has responded, and the gap is quickly being filled. Savvy manufacturers and specialized carriers have recognized the potential of the senior market, resulting in more and better choices than ever.

Samsung’s Android smartphones, for instance, include a simplified version of its operating software designed to make navigation more convenient. Called “Easy Mode,” this optional setting is found in nearly every modern Samsung device. Easy Mode enlarges the size of text and icons and allows users to put everything within easy reach on a single screen. Most Android and iPhone models also offer options within the settings menu that allow users to adjust things like font size and screen brightness to tailor the user experience to their specific needs. With any Android smartphone, users also have the option of downloading a third-party launcher from the Google Play Store, which provides big pictures and text to simplify navigation. There’s even a growing segment of the carrier market focusing on seniors. Known for its affordable rates and excellent customer service, Consumer Cellular is a full-service, no-contract carrier that offers a range of specifically senior-friendly smartphones for any skill level. Other carriers have gained popularity among older users by offering simplified smartphones with convenient emergency calling features. Opening up new worlds Beyond a slight learning curve, there’s no longer any reason for seniors to feel left out, or even limited, by smartphone technology. By integrating new, senior-oriented designs and features, today’s smartphone experience can be as simple and user-friendly as they need it to be. The Pew study reveals just how integral smartphones have become to the lives of users over 50. Going beyond standard uses, 39% in this age bracket also use their phones to access information about health conditions; 34% use them to do online banking. Fifty-five percent use smartphones for social networking, and another 55% use their phone’s features for entertainment. There are truly almost no limits on what can be done with a smartphone. No longer a mere toy or gadget, it has evolved to become an indispensable modern tool. The good news for older users is that it is also now more accessible than ever.

Is Entrepreneurship Right for You?

T

B Y TO M I R M E N

O B E C L E A R , I use the

term entrepreneur to refer to an aspiring small business owner and not an individual employed by a business that might exhibit entrepreneurial characteristics. The two individuals are very different, as a business owner risks everything, whereas a non-owner risks very little by comparison. I don’t know if business ownership is part of the cultural fabric woven into the American dream or not, but it was for me. I do, however, believe that many would-be business owners often romanticize about becoming an entrepreneur and the perception they have of the freedom they think awaits them upon launching their very first venture. Self-employment is clearly not for everybody, and far too many persons discover this only after investing a great deal of time and money into a new business. But there are steps you can take to avoid the same mistakes made by so many unsuccessful would-be entrepreneurs. If you feel that you have what it takes to

Self-employment is clearly not for everybody, and far too many persons discover this only after investing a great deal of time and money into a new business. succeed in the self-employment arena, I would encourage you to seek the advice of several trusted and experienced business mentors who can help you to better appreciate what might lay ahead as you navigate the uncertainties of small business ownership. In addition, questions you may want to ask yourself include: » Am I comfortable taking risks? » Can I act independently?

» Can I be persuasive and compelling? » Do I possess the necessary skills to negotiate? » Can I think and act creatively? » Do I have a strong system of mentors in place? Starting and owning your own business can be an exciting and rewarding experience for the true entrepreneur that understands that they will confront far more challenges than they might otherwise experience as an employee. Becoming a successful entrepreneur requires careful planning, creativity, and, most of all, lots of hard work. Statistics show that the potential for success as a business owner is very low indeed. But I believe that if these same statistics were adjusted so as to differentiate between the true entrepreneur and those would-be business owners possessing little more than good intentions, you would discover that the potential for success is likely much higher than you might have anticipated for the genuine entrepreneur.

EVER CHASE PERFORMANCE. Make a personal commitment to NEVER chase performance. People often only look at recent mutual fund returns to ma ke a decision. Returns are just one of the criteria you should consider when investing. Fawaz Just a few yea rs ago people John CERTIFIED became obsessed with gold as an FINANCIAL investment, because it performed PLANNER™ well for three years. But upon further investigation, you would discover that gold had lackluster performance for almost a 20 year period prior to that. People also chased real estate as an investment a decade or so ago before the market crashed in 2008. Also, many investors fell in love with tech stocks in 2000, before they too fell out of favor. The moral of these lessons is to never invest more than 5% of your money into one sector or one stock. Never put all your eggs in one basket. Some people have all their money invested in CDs, because they are deemed to be safe. But CDs are earning less than 1% right now, and inflation is running at about 2%. So in reality, you are losing money and sliding backwards financially. Avoid investments that you don’t understand. If you don’t understand what you’re investing in, then you should not invest in it, regardless of the promise of above average returns. Exercise caution when investing in products that offer an enticement or bonus. Some investment companies offer bonuses, say 10%, for investing your money with them or to replace an existing account. These incentives are rarely as beneficial to the investor as they may sound initially. Also, be very cautious of any investments with a duration of 10 years or longer. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it likely is. Beware of sharks. Advisors who are selfproclaimed authorities in some field of investing, retirement, taxes, IRA distributions, etc. but lack either the training, experience, or both, may not be your best choice in helping you to achieve your individual goals. Considering Homeschooling? B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

W

ITH THE RISE of vio-

lence, bullying, and peer pressure in schools today, you may have thought about homeschooling. How do parents actually teach their children at home? The truth is there is no set method for homeschooling. In fact, you probably won’t find two families that do it the same way. That is the beauty of homeschooling. The teaching methods that are used are up to the parent, yet almost all methods of homeschooling will generally fall within the category of eclectic learning, structured learning, or unschooling. Structured learning is exactly what it appears to be. A parent will teach their child in a similar way the child would be taught in a public or private school setting. This means the school day generally starts at a certain time each day and the subjects taught flow in the same order each day. The curriculum is fairly traditional and similar to what is found in a public or private school. Eclectic learning is where parents do not follow set guidelines or curriculums to teach their children. Eclectic learning is usually a mix of both traditional and nontraditional styles. While some subjects may

be structured (such as math or spelling), others can be unstructured (such as science, reading, or history). Eclectic learning is fast becoming a popular type of homeschooling. Unschooling is the least traditional method of homeschooling. Children still learn to read, write, and do mathematics, yet lesson plans and traditional textbooks are not the norm. This method of homeschooling is often child-led. This means that parents base what is taught and when it is taught on the child’s individual learning style, natural curiosities, desires, and interests. Support Groups and Enrichment Classes Homeschooling families come from all economic, political, ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds. If you are considering homeschooling, it is important to understand that the local community does offer support groups. Participating in these groups is optional. Many families do like to participate in groups, as they enable families with similar interests or teaching styles to come together, share their experiences, and make friends. Enrichment classes can sometimes be offered by groups. The purpose of these classes is to free-up the time of homeschooling

parents, as well as to enable the child the chance to experience learning from an individual who may have strength in the subject being taught. Finding Your Place It can take time for homeschooling families to find the learning style and groups that are a good fit for them. It is not uncommon for new homeschooling families to move from group to group or change teaching styles until good matches are found. Whether you are contemplating homeschooling or have just taken the leap into it, reach out to other homeschooling families in the area and learn all you can from them. They are paving the way for you. Wendy Faulkner is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Her work can be found in various print markets, as well as online. It’s Time to Talk About It

YPICALLY LADIES and

gentlemen do not draw attention to anything that is gross, unappealing, or the least bit offensive. However, if we do not talk about this, I’m afraid the violation of this important etiquette rule will continue to cause distress to so many. Here’s the etiquette rule: It is polite for all ladies and gentlemen to leave the restroom clean and tidy. Recently I was traveling on an airplane and excused myself to the restroom. Upon opening the door, I was met with such a scene that I can only presume you can imagine the scene after I express that I was not able to bring 66

myself to enter the facility. The floor and the seat of the toilet were simply disgusting. What is this? Why? How does it happen? I really do not want anyone to answer these questions, but what I hope is that you and I make sure that we teach our children that it is our responsibility and duty to show respect to those who come after us and to leave restrooms clean and sanitary. It really is all about respect. It’s about whether or not we value others and other’s experiences. Parents, please teach your sons and your daughters to be careful in a restroom, and, if there is a mistake made, to clean it up. Let’s teach them to pay attention and to not be

distracted when visiting the restroom. Let’s explain why it is polite to be aware of how we use this facility with others in mind. It’s not too much to ask. Children are very capable of understanding and following this protocol. The real question is, are adults?

removal and skin revitalization treatments, offering impressive results without the typical downtime or discomfort. It is the first and only aesthetic picosecond laser that is FDA-cleared for the removal of tattoos and pigment, skin revitalization, and acne scarring. So how does the PicoSure Tattoo Removal Laser work? Ultra-short picosecond laser pulses (one trillionth of a second in length!) hit tattoo ink particles with a pressure so great that the ink shatters into tiny dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are more readily absorbed and eliminated by the body than with the older Q-switched nanosecond lasers. This results in better clearance of the tattoo in significantly fewer treatments. In a published scientific study, 100% of patients obtained greater than 75% clearance after two to four treatments with the PicoSure laser. With the recent addition on the 532 nanometer wavelength to the PicoSure laser, all tattoo ink colors – including red, orange, and yellow – can successfully be treated. PicoSure is not just for tattoo removal anymore. It turns out that the unique power PicoSure’s picosecond pulse duration can be focused to treat pigment irregularities such as melasma and freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, and even acne scars. The PicoSure Focus treatment offers impressive results without the typical downtime or discomfort that are frequently associated with other skin revitalization treatments. The Focus lens is a proprietary PicoSure attachment that magnifies the picosecond pulse 20X. The result of this treatment is the formation of new collagen and elastic fibers. Significant improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, pigment irregularities, and reduction in pore size can all be expected. Even acne scars can be treated. In fact, in a scientific study, 77% of patients who underwent a series of PicoSure Focus Laser treatments had a physicians’ graded improvement of 50% in their acne scars.
