Natural Hormone Replacement

e n o e h t r o f t i Do

You Love ! Why Natural or Bioidentical Hormone Replacement?

This refers to hormones that are identical in nature to those naturally produced by the body. Levels can be checked when these hormones are used, but when synthetic hormones are used, levels can’t be checked because they have a different molecular structure than what the body makes naturally.

What’s wrong with all those TV Ads?

Life isn’t just about Testosterone. That’s what all these ads push. Sex sells, but if you aren’t healthy, it won’t last. Allow your body to heal itself, age gracefully, and everything else will follow.

Why isn’t it just about Testosterone?

Who wants to live a long life if you aren’t healthy? If you aren’t sleeping, have no energy, affected by memory fog and are working out without any results, then Natural HRT is for you. It is for men and women. It isn’t just for hot flashes either— aging should be about being healthy and reducing risk for disease and living life to its fullest.

See us for your Five Steps to Regenerative Health.

• Natural Hormone Replacement: Have your hormone levels checked and we will return them to an optimal level. We use a local compounding pharmacy to individually

adjust your hormone replacement medications. • Supplements: Taking the right supplements allows your body to utilize the hormones you are taking, gives you energy and allows your body to reduce inflammation and aging. • Diet and Exercise: What fuels are you putting in your body that are weighing you down? We will go through the dietary changes to make. • Toxins: Exposures to pesticides, plastics and other harmful substances affect our daily bodily functions. If it goes on your skin, in your body, or you breathe it in, then you have to detoxify it and eliminate it from your body. • Mind, Body, Spirit: Sleeping, being happy, and de-stressing is integral to any regenerative health program.

Pure Luxe Salon, Spa & Medspa Photographs by D. Roberts Photography

his month Everything Knoxville is pleased to feature Pure Luxe Salon, Spa & Medspa. This innovative, new approach spa, launched in 2009, is the creation of Knoxville native and entrepreneur, Rusty Bittle. His goal was to offer area residents an extraordinary destination where people could discover a luxury spa that is typically only experienced when visiting the world’s finest resorts and destination spas. A place that beckons guests looking for somewhere to retreat, relax, and rejuvenate, Pure Luxe offers visitors industry-leading salon, spa, and medical spa services in a stateof-the-art, 9,000 square foot facility featuring a team of the area’s most talented and knowledgeable medical and beauty professionals who are totally committed to enhancing your very own unique, Pure Luxe experience. EK: Share with our readers just what sets Pure Luxe apart from other area salons, spas, and medical spas. Pure Luxe: We are Knoxville’s only full-service salon, spa, and medspa, which allows our clients to make only one

stop for all of their beauty services. If you receive a relaxing massage, try a shampoo and blowout, after which you walk out feeling and looking great. Stopping in for BOTOX? You’re able to get a manicure too while you’re here. It’s so convenient for

our clients, and we love having the option to offer them a full range of services. EK: Before launching Pure Luxe, your founder, Rusty Bittle, visited world-class salons, spas, and medspas that are typically only found in high-end resorts and destination spas. Why was that so important? Pure Luxe: Having grown up in this area, Rusty knew that there was nothing like Pure Luxe to serve this community. There wasn’t a place where clients could truly feel like they had entered their own personal retreat, where they could leave their stress at the door and physically and mentally begin to rejuvenate. He wanted his Knoxville neighbors to experience the same luxury and pampering he had experienced around the world, combined with a healthy dose of Southern hospitality and

superior customer service that you may have thought no longer existed. EK: Your 9,000 square foot, state-ofthe-art facility no doubt exceeds most people’s expectations. Why is the unique ambiance experienced at Pure Luxe significant to visitors? Pure Luxe: Most people aren’t expecting this type of luxurious and relaxing ambiance in Knoxville. It’s almost as if you are stepping into another world as soon as you enter through our doors. The peaceful waterfalls, the dimly lit spa hallways, the extraordinary attention to every detail – they all leave a sense of peace and tranquility whether you are here for five minutes or five hours. Even the drive to Hardin Valley is more relaxing than the alternative congestion of Turkey Creek or West Knoxville you’re accustomed to, even though we’re only a few minutes away. EK: In addition to offering full salon, spa, and medspa services, Pure Luxe’s team of professionals includes three registered nurses and a physician with more than 75 years of combined medical experience. Tell our readers what their roles are at Pure Luxe. Pure Luxe: Our highly trained RNs perform the majority of our medspa services. They have backgrounds in fields such as dermatology and plastic surgery,

in addition to extensive aesthetics training and experience. Dr. Russell, our Medical Director, oversees the medspa and performs some treatments. Our medical team members fully assess your needs and wants in order to recommend a customized treatment plan just for you. One-on-one consultations are always complimentary and provide a great opportunity to ask questions before deciding on a particular service. EK: Pure Luxe’s expansive medspa offers BOTOX, dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing, laser hair reduction, and weight loss programs, as well as your latest service, CoolSculpting. First, elaborate a little on your existing services. Pure Luxe: As mentioned, our team of professionals can develop a full treatment plan that meets each client’s needs and wants. That plan could include anything from BOTOX and dermal filler to laser skin resurfacing, sclerotherapy, and more. It is about achieving your expectations, and our team has the experience to do so. As a bonus, you receive these treatments in our lovely facility, which has the same luxurious feel of our salon and spa. You avoid the sterile environment of a doctor’s office without compromising your safety or results. EK: I know our readers are excited to learn more about CoolSculpting. Pure Luxe: We’re excited to offer it, too! CoolSculpting is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that freezes stubborn fat, which is then naturally eliminated from your body. It’s a revolutionary procedure we wish had existed years ago! Men and women of all shapes and sizes are appropriate candidates. There are no

needles, no special diets or supplements, and no surgery required to permanently eliminate those areas of fat that have bothered you for years but are resistant to diet and exercise. Best of all, there is no downtime! Our clients and employees have been thoroughly impressed with their results, especially since this is a safe, FDA-cleared treatment that actually does what it says it will do. EK: What can a client expect when they come in for a CoolSculpting treatment? Pure Luxe: A CoolSculpting treatment day is very simple. You begin by changing into a comfortable spa robe then relaxing in the Men’s or Women’s Lounge. The nurse then takes you to the CoolSculpting room where you relax on a reclining chair while she assesses your areas of concern and begins the treatment. Since we have two machines and multiple applicators, each treatment takes approximately one hour. Even love handles and other dualsided areas take one hour instead of two, which maximizes your time with us. During that hour, you can read, answer emails on your iPad, or we’ll dim the lights so you can take a nap. You could even receive your BOTOX treatment! At the end of the hour, you’re able to get up and proceed with your day as usual. EK: Speaking of BOTOX, Pure Luxe also offers a unique BOTOX club, called Club 90 Ten. Tell us more. Pure Luxe: Club 90 Ten is an exclusive BOTOX club that helps members stay on a regular treatment schedule. For a minimal annual fee, members receive reduced pricing throughout the year – lower than any other special offers – in addition to member-only perks like discounts on other medspa services. This club has become very popular with our BOTOX clients. EK: Any final thoughts or comments you would like to share with our readers? Pure Luxe: Our vision for Pure Luxe is to provide the very best customer service in an environment that can truly be your retreat. All of our team members are welltrained, experienced, and excited to serve you. So whether you are stopping in for a brow wax or spending a full day of pampering with us, we’ll help you escape the stresses of life while providing you a truly enjoyable Pure Luxe experience.

Decorating Den Interiors y road to becoming an Interior Designer began with my interest in art from a very young age. Painting watercolors while living in Southern California, I realized that I wanted to do more. That is when I attended Fullerton College and studied design under a prominent Santa Monica architect, as well as one of the founding members of the American Society of Interior Designers. My education, combined with my family relocating several times across this beautiful country, gives me a unique perspective that I bring to my clients’ homes. I relate to all types of design styles and create “lifestyle” designs based on the client’s individual needs. Whether traditional, contemporary, transitional, or any number of design styles, I strive to create the “room of their dreams.”

Thankfully, my road came to Knoxville. It was the right choice for our family, as we had been visiting our family here for more than 20 years. This was home – and has been for the past five years. I opened a Decorating Den Interiors franchise. (There are more than 400 franchise owners nationwide.) Purchasing the franchise allows me take advantage of their support and resources. My supplier listing is so vast and comprehensive; it is the envy of any independent designer! Plus, we do not charge for our time as most independent designers do, but for the items they are purchasing only. I always begin with telling my clients that we do lifestyle design based on their wants and needs and not what I think the room should be. This helps the client realize that they are an integral part of the process. I provide a service to them – not by dragging them all around town “shopping,” but by bringing fabrics, finishes, and the designs to their

home, saving them precious time and money. Also, doesn’t it make sense to see everything in the light of your own home? I have had clients call me after they have made a major purchase on their own, only to discover it didn’t fit in the room properly, or the scale was out of proportion, or the color or finish was just wrong for the room. I encourage clients to call me before they begin designing a room, as I can save them these types of costly mistakes. Why not make that simple phone call? We offer a complimentary consultation for you to get to know us and for us to get to know you and your project. Sometimes people are intimidated to call a designer. Did you know that the majority of the clients I work with have never worked with a designer before? After using our services, they say they will never do it any other way, and the time savings and convenience was great! Did you also know that we install everything in the room in one day? It’s fun and exciting to see the client’s face as they walk into their newly decorated room for the first time. That’s the best part of my job! Whether it is one room, an entire home, or you are building your dream home, I encourage you to experience the Decorating Den Interiors difference. Discover why I have recently been awarded an International Dream Room Award and was graciously awarded first place for designing a home from the design, to the brick, to the finishing touches in the 2012 Parade of Homes in Knoxville. My work has also been featured on HGTV’s website and will be published soon in Real Kitchens magazine. I love living in Knoxville and the wonderful people I have had the privilege of working with on their homes. Top Eight Biltmore To-Dos This Summer A destination for rejuvenation since the 1800s, George W.

Vanderbilt chose the outdoor playground of Asheville to build his family estate. In the century that has lapsed since family and friends of the Vanderbilts came for long stays at Biltmore, time has seemingly stood still. Travelers today enjoy the slower pace of summer’s backyard season in Biltmore’s 8,000-acre landscape, a space that has been preserved and perfected over time for future generations.

Fly fishing at the Lagoon on Biltmore

Biltmore Summer Vacations Offer Something for Everyone Kids admitted free now through Labor Day ix t y- six

percent of families say “togetherness” is the essential element for a memorable family vacation (PGAV Destinations study, “The Art of the Family Vacation,” 2012). Add ressin g the n eed for a balance of itinerary options that families can truly enjoy together, The estate offers mountain biking and Biltmore’s summer vaca- paved bike paths tion experience has been designed to be active, fun, and educational (don’t tell the kids!) for all. Adults and children are entertained with a slate of activities in Biltmore’s 8,000-acre backyard, while imaginations stay engaged with tours and historic exhibitions.

Summer Travel Deals Travelers can plan a great summer day or getaway

while stretching vacation dollars with deals at Biltmore. Kids 16 and younger receive FREE admission now through Labor Day. Dad receives FREE admission on Father’s Day, June 16. Families can also purchase a Summer Family Value Package that includes admission for two adults, two children, and a family dining voucher, all for $140. Regular tickets purchased at least seven days in advance receive $15 off the price of admission.

1. Take the family time travelling. Visit the 250-room Biltmore House, George Vanderbilt’s dream home that he lived in more than 100 years ago. Kids stay engaged with a NEW treasure hunt through Biltmore House. Kids marvel at the sheer size of Biltmore House, the bowling alley and pool in the basement, and the massive front lawn and backyard for playing.

5. Set the kids free at Antler Hill Village. Get lost together in a maze comprised of 500 trees. Kids run and climb in the NEW Pisgah Playground. At the barn, explore farming life at the turn of the century and antique farm equipment. Ask inquisitive questions to our staff and play with chickens, roosters, goats, horses, and sheep in the farmyard. Demos, crafts, and period games are available select days.

2. Have a unique adventure. Try your luck at outdoor sports like fly fishing or sporting clays, or go off-road behind the wheel of a Land Rover. (Our Land Rover Driving School offers courses for adults AND kids!) Go to an awe-inspiring location: the rooftop of Biltmore House. The guided Architect’s Tour takes families to the massive roof of America’s largest home for a look at architectural details, to count gargoyles, and for expansive mountain views of a spectacular backyard.

6. Embark on a tasty tour. Taste wines at the most visited winery in America (complimentary grape juice for the kids). Restaurants offer a range of options from barbeque to fine dining. Pick up a family-themed picnic from the Creamery, and save room for the Creamery’s Winky Bar Sundae, a sweet treat for a summer day based on the Winky Bar produced by the former Biltmore Dairy.

3. Reconnect with nature. Set out on foot on a network of nearly 22 round-trip miles of hiking trails. Or, take in views from a bike, on the back of a horse, while floating down a river, on a Segway, or a carriage ride. Go rock-skipping at the lagoon or play hide and seek among rare and native trees. 4. Stop to smell the roses. Biltmore’s renowned summer gardens are perfect for leisurely strolls and picnicking spots near tropical palms, roses, giant sunflowers, and colorful lily pads and koi in Italian Garden pools.

7. Rock out! Dance under the stars select summer nights during the concert series kicking off July 25. The 2013 line-up includes Heart, Sheryl Crow, Christian group Casting Crowns, The Four Tops and The Temptations, Beach Boys, and comedian Bill Engvall. Local bands provide FREE entertainment Fridays June through August at the Antler Hill Village Green and Bandstand. 8. Make Biltmore your home away from home. Extend your visit with an overnight stay at the Inn on Biltmore Estate or with our local accommodations partners and take advantage of packages on select dates this summer.

Boost Your Retirement Income with Real Estate

Advantages of Corporate Office Investing

Presented by Ali Swofford

D

o you wish you had more money?

You’re not alone. Your retirement income streams may seem insufficient. Interest rates are at rock bottom. With the federal funds rate near 0%, classic conservative investments – money market and CDs – aren’t even earning returns to keep up with 2%-3% inflation.1,2 If you’re in this predicament, a little adjustment to your portfolio may help.

Growth investing is important even when in retirement. It makes sense to be conservative

with your hard-earned retirement money, but it is possible to be too conservative when investing it. If you minimize risk, you may also minimize portfolio returns. If you owned a longer-term CD when the recession began in 2007, the CD’s income has dropped by two-thirds since then.1 The goal is to find the middle ground – a comfortable level of risk in pursuit of a return with a better income stream. Rule of 72. At 4% inflation, the cost of living will double in 18 years. Inflation is about 3% right now, but there’s no guarantee it will stay there. Your retirement income has to keep pace with this inflationary advance. If it doesn’t, you will be left with less purchasing power as the years proceed. What should you do? Considering that stocks may return 10-15% (or better) in a good year, it is hard to dismiss the power and potential of the investment market. Bonds should also be in a portfolio, but bonds aren’t providing great yields today, and their value will fall when interest rates eventually start to rise.

Real estate and other alternative investments may be a good non-correlated source of income. Many investors don’t want to be a

landlord, replacing water heaters or a roof. A real estate investment trust can provide a 6% yield* without all the time and expenses of an investment property. Boosting your retirement income with real estate is a viable option. Ask me about options. I have helped other retirees assess and revise their portfolios to rebuild and/or grow incomes and savings. Vegetable Advantage Recipes Cauliflower Tahini Zest › 1 bunch cauliflower › 2 cups peas (fresh or frozen) › 1/2 cup carrots, matchstick-style cut › 1 cup fresh green beans › 1 celery stalk, sliced thin › 1 leek, sliced thin

The Vegetable Advantage June is “Eat Your Veggie” month. As the

farmers’ market gears up for a new season, celebrating this month by eating more vegetables couldn’t be more appropriate. Whether you eat them raw, steamed, boiled, or baked, each preparation style has its advantages. Using these different styles can have subtle differences that can impact our health, and vegetables have anti-aging effects as well, which provide an added incentive to indulge. Inflammation is one cause of aging. Inflammation is the body’s natural defense to invaders such as bacteria or viruses. This process is usually short lived, but when this mechanism does not shut off, then chronic inflammation sets in and can result in degenerative diseases. Foods can enhance inflammation or have antiinflammatory effects. The same is true for cooking styles. According to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, MD, author of The Perricone Promise, Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps, flash cooking or frying foods as well as browning foods can wreak havoc with the inflammation process and thus intensify the aging process. Of course frying foods is not healthy from a fat viewpoint, but acidity is increased, which leads to the inflammation process. Steaming and boiling are better cooking choices, as both aid in digestion and help with alkalinity. Eating raw vegetables has the advantage of preserving the live enzymes contained in vegetables, which are destroyed when foods are heated above a certain temperature. It also decreases the amount of advanced glycation end products or AGE’s, which have been shown to

significantly affect the aging process. All in all, food preparation does matter. There are many foods that can create inflammation such as sugar, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, white flour products, dairy, some grains, and soymilk to name a few. The good news is that most vegetables have anti-inflammatory effects. Vegetables such as radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, bok choy, celery, greens, green beans, onions, daikon, peppers, squashes, rutabagas, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and garlic contribute significantly to alkalinity, which helps fight inflammation. As June celebrates “Eat Your Veggie” month, it is a great time to reflect on our vegetable consumption. There are many ways to incorporate vegetables into recipes that even the most discerning palate will enjoy. Knowing that vegetables contribute greatly to our health and can help to ward off degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers should help create more incentive to be creative with recipes and eat a variety of vegetables. After all, having the vegetable advantage puts us in the driver’s seat to becoming healthier. Note: Consult your healthcare professional

before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Have Allergies Want to Wear Contact Lenses or Dry Eyes But Have Stopped Trying? Prevented You from Wearing $100 Contact Lenses? Rebate

I

s there a contact lens made

for allergies or dry eyes? The answer may surprise you. The short answer is yes; however, explanation is needed. There is no contact lens on the market today that will alleviate your allergy or dryness discomfort completely. The key is to properly treat and manage the condition, then choose the best contact lens for your individual needs. Millions of people suffer from ocular allergies or dry eyes, and many of those people have had to give up contact lenses due to discomfort. Itchy, red, and watery eyes can be quite uncomfortable. If you add contact lenses to the mix, then it can become unbearable. If this describes you, then we have a solution for you. Proper treatment of ocular allergies is very important to maintain the ideal comfort and health of your eyes. Oral medications may help, but eye drops are usually needed for ocular relief. Your eye doctor will guide you through proper treatment, which usually includes prescription eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis. If you suffer from dry eyes, you may be frustrated and feel there is nothing that can give you relief and that contact lenses are a thing of the past for you. Fortunately, with proper treatment and management of dry eye, you most likely can become a successful contact lens wearer once again. Dr. Brent Fry of Premier Eyecare recommends getting control of ocular allergies or dryness through proper treatment and management. Then, he will choose a lens that will fit your needs. For many patients, a daily disposable contact lens is an excellent choice for both comfort and health of the eyes. If you need a more specialized contact lens, Dr. Fry treats many of his patients with specialty lenses made for high astigmatism, keratoconus, post-RK, and those who have failed with soft lenses. With today’s technologies, most people can successfully wear contact lenses. You need an optometrist with the experience and compassion to listen to you and give you the best options for success. Dr. Fry has more than 15 years experience in successfully fitting contact lenses, including difficult, specialty fits. Call Premier Eyecare today to schedule your eye exam. Why wait?

To Your Dog’s Health

To Your Dog’s Health

H

ealthy diets and good grooming are essential elements for your dog to have a healthy coat. Beneath your dog’s skin are glands that produce sebum, an oily substance that protects the coat and skin from environmental moisture. Good grooming maintains their blood flow and distribution of sebum. A professional groomer carefully evaluates your dog’s skin and can detect early signs of skin issues, often referring you to your veterinarian. Dogs with short hair need to be groomed less often, while heavily, longer haired d o gs s u c h a s La b ra dors and Beagles need groomed more often to keep their hair

under control. Other dogs with thick, long, curly, or wiry coats need specialized “stripping,” which plucks dead, dry hair off the dog, while hairless dogs’ exposed skin is quite thin and delicate and needs to be moisturized. “All dogs have unique grooming needs,” says John, the groomer at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits. “Consultation with the dog’s owners can result in an individualized grooming plan for each dog.” Call Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits today to get your dog on a regular grooming and maintenance program.

Do’s and Don’ts of Shopping for Dads and Grads Father’s Day and graduations

are coming up, and that means you’ll have to think of appropriate gifts for these heralded champions. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make gift recipients happy – all you do need to do is put some thought into their presents. A few tips and tricks will help you pick out a gift the recipient is sure to love. Here are some do’s and don’ts for shopping for dads and grads.

Do’s

» Know what dad enjoys. Does he like to cook? Read? Enjoy a specific sports team? It’s easier to buy a gift he’ll enjoy when you tailor it to his tastes. » Consider giving your grad cash. » Be a tourist in your hometown and share the experience with dad or the grad. Whether it’s a trip to a local street fair, a specialty beer tasting at nearby watering hole, or even an afternoon at the ball game, sometimes sharing the experience can be the best gift. 24

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2013

» Spread your gift out through the whole year with a subscription to Netflix for dad’s movie obsession, Hulu Plus for TV-lovers, or Pandora for your grad with a music library that rivals Billboard’s Hot 100. » Grads would love a place to plug in their music, and a dual docking station is perfect for everything from visiting a friend’s dorm room to just lounging around the apartment.

Don’ts

» Buy dad a tie. Beyond being cliché, with today’s casual workplace, he probably has more than enough already. » Buy your grads gift cards for specific stores. By now, they’ve got their own flair and style, and you’ll run the risk of missing the mark. It’s best to throw a cash card or two in the mix, and call it the “gift of shopping.” » Give your grad the customary graduation pen – it will be “lost” or act as the resident

paper weight until he/she moves out. » Buy exercise equipment unless you know it will be used. » Skimp on technology. It changes quickly – that’s why stores have those clearance tables. No need to break the bank, but don’t buy something that’s outdated the moment you walk out of the store. Regardless of what you give a grad or dad, she or he will appreciate it the most when your gift comes from your heart.

Pet Care

The Top Four Most Common Pet Myths t’s no secret that Americans love their pets. When it comes to U.S. pet ownership, 39% of households own at least one dog and 33% own at least one cat, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Furry family members bring joy and excitement to a household, and providing the best care possible helps ensure pets have a long, healthy life. Unfortunately, with so much information available, it’s easy to become confused about what’s really best for them. To cut through the clutter, here are some of the most common pet myths.

Myth 1 If cats have nine lives, what do dogs have?

Myth 4 Letting my dog out in the yard is enough exercise.

Dogs and cats both need plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation to stay healthy. If you just leave your dog out in the yard alone, they might not get much of either. It’s important to take them for walks, play fetch, or simply run around together. Not only will it make for a happier, healthier dog, but it will also help to strengthen your

relationship. Cats should be kept indoors for their safety, but there are plenty of toys that work their brains and their bodies at the same time. Visit your local pet store to find some toys that fit the bill. Each pet is unique, so ongoing care, including precisely balanced nutrition, regular wellness visits to the vet, and daily play periods are all good things that keep your pet healthy and living well for many years to come.

Cats’ curious nature and quick reaction times are likely the basis of the nine lives reputation, but in reality, owners need to remember that both cats and dogs only have one life. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular veterinary visits to ensure your pet has a long, healthy, and happy one. Going to the veterinarian shouldn’t only be reserved for times when your pet is sick. Your pet needs annual wellness check-ups, vaccines, dental exams, and nutritional consultations, just like humans do.

Myth 2 Table scraps are OK.

Did you know that one ounce of cheddar cheese for a 20-pound dog is like a human eating more than one and a half chocolate bars? That same piece of cheese for a 10-pound cat is like eating almost three full chocolate bars! Table scraps are basically empty calories for cats and dogs. They need precisely balanced nutrition for their specific life stage and special needs to remain healthy.

Myth 3 Dogs wag their tail when they’re happy.

Dogs wag their tail for many reasons; the most common is that they’re either happy or nervous. Cats will also wag or flick their tail when they’re upset or thinking. Pets communicate via complex body language rather than vocal expression like humans. Learning to read what your pet is telling you will go a long way in helping to build a fulfilling relationship. Ask your veterinarian for advice if you feel stuck learning your pet’s body language cues. June 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Brides Toss the Bouquet for Charity s summer approaches,

so do the joyous and often stressful months of meticulous planning for summer weddings. Brides across the country are preparing for their childhood dream of being the princess joined forever with their prince. Wedding flowers and bouquets have been a part of these celebrated occasions dating back to the ancient Greeks, where Caesar’s laurels would be placed on the bride’s head upon marriage. The tradition continued and evolved throughout the years. In England, a bride would be preceded by what we now call “flower girls” to assure long life and happiness. Fast forward to the present, and you will find that wedding flowers and wedding bouquets all have different meanings to different people, some of which include trustworthiness, gallantry, faithfulness, and love. After months of planning, the day comes and goes, and so do most of the items that made the day so special. When the wedding day has passed, brides are left with the photos, memories, and the dress. However, the flowers that added to Photograph by Jennie Andrews Photography

the joy of the occasion are usually discarded. Through Random Acts of Flowers, brides have a way to extend the magic of their special day by donating their used flowers to be repurposed and delivered to those needing a smile. Random Acts of Flowers, a local non-profit charity, collects donated flowers from weddings, memorial services, florists, special events, grocery stores, and churches to recycle and repurpose them into beautiful bouquets for delivery to patients in area hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice care centers. Given the number of flowers that often decorate these beautiful occasions, it is not outside the realm of possibility for one bride to positively impact the lives of 50-100 people with one phone call. It can be one of the easiest items to mark off of their seemingly endless to-do list, and the best part is it’s free! It costs nothing for

a bride to donate the flowers. Once the bride has indicated their interest in donating, the RAF staff and volunteers will work with the event facility to arrange pickup of the flowers. “You’ve spent maybe a year or more planning the most magical day of your life that encompasses all your hopes and dreams of happiness for the rest of your life,” said Connie Wallace, Random Acts of Flowers’ board Vice President. “In just one simple step, you can spread a little wedding magic to a lot of people that need a smile.” If you would like to make a floral donation from your wedding, please call 865.633.9082 or visit www.rafknoxville.org. June 21 8:30 PM Bijou Theatre Sister Hazel’s creative train just keeps rolling. 2009’s well-received “Release” reached the band’s highest ever spot, and they kept the momentum going with 2010’s “Heartland Highway,” marking the band’s quickest album-to-album turnaround in their 15-plus-year career. After all their years together, the band feels like they reached new milestones with “Heartland Highway.” “We are all in groove,” asserts vocalist Ken Block. “We have all things rolling along.” Lead guitarist Ryan Newell seconds that emotion. “I feel like we are stepping into our heyday,” he says.

Q: I’m getting married soon and need to pluck my eyebrows. Any tips that will make it easier? A: To ease tweezing, use a warm washcloth to open the pores of your skin. Tweeze one hair at a time, pulling in the direction of hair growth to avoid breakage. Smoothly and gently pull from the root. It is also a good idea to do this several days before your wedding, and then “touch up” again a day or two before. We carry the Tweezerman slant tip tweezers, which we think are the best. Using good tweezers will give you better results! Come in and try before you buy! We invite you to visit our studio, conveniently located at West Town Mall. Our caring and well-trained associates can demonstrate solutions to all of your skin care and makeup questions in our state-of-the-art studio at absolutely no cost to you. Health

Shape Up! hile children long for the lazy carefree days of summer, many adults view the season as a reason to be active and get healthy. Whether it’s to look good for an upcoming beach vacation or simply to have the energy to enjoy the season to the fullest, setting health goals is a great first step. Sticking to those aspirations doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful. Just follow a few expert tips, and you’ll look and feel great in no time. To help busy adults maintain overall health and wellness, here are some top tips for an effective yet healthy summer slim-down. Go Outdoors

The weather is nice, so why not take your workout routine outdoors? So many outdoor activities are natural calorie-burners, plus they’re a lot of fun. Ride bikes on the weekend, run around and play tag with your kids, or play fetch with the dog. Infuse your social activities with fitness, too. For example, finish a date night with a romantic walk outside, or have friends over for an outdoor barbecue and dance party.

Expert Fitness Tips for a Healthy, Effective Summer Slim-Down Lighten Meals

Light foods pair well with warmer weather, so take a fresh approach to meal time. Visit your local farmers market to pick up fresh, seasonal food and get creative in the kitchen. Incorporate water-based fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and pineapple into meals. For dessert, freeze grapes for a sweet treat after dinner.

Snack Well

Look for snacks and drink options made from pure and simple ingredients. Protein shakes can serve as a delicious meal replacement and dairy- and gluten-free shakes are also perfect as a pre- and postworkout drink or an anytime onthe-go snack. These shakes can help control hunger and provide vital nutrients for sustained energy, which is important for keeping up with the bustle of summer to-do’s.

Drink Up

Stay hydrated by stocking the fridge with healthy drink options. A big pitcher of cold water with slices of strawberries, cucumbers, and lime is a refreshing drink that’s readily available. This low-calorie drink quenches on even the hottest days.

Rise and Shine

Get some fresh air first thing in the morning; it will keep you energized all day long. Take a quick walk or practice yoga outside – try it during sunrise for a great way to start your day. You’ll be surprised with how cheery and upbeat you’ll feel.

Green Your Thumb

Gardening is a great way to enjoy the warm weather. Plus, you burn calories without even knowing it. Try planting your own herb garden. It’s a simple activity you can even do with your kids, and you will have quick access to fresh herbs when you want to add a healthy flavor boost to your dishes.

Try New Activities

Warm weather is the perfect time to try something new. Take tennis or golf lessons, or meet friends on a weekly basis to play a different sport. Hit the sand with the family and try some beach body Pilates; do a few crunches on your towel, try some planks in the sand, and even some crab walks. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Men Love Spa 9700,Too! With its fabulous reputation as a

place for women to relax and rejuvenate, West Knoxville’s Spa Ninety-Seven Hundred often gets overlooked as a day spa that is also very popular with men. Indeed, the spa is a place where anyone, man or woman, can feel comfortable, but with Father’s Day coming soon, let’s talk about him. Rather than a hair salon that also has spa services, we offer an environment where men can comfortably and privately enjoy relaxing and therapeutic treatments. We have eliminated the high energy, sounds, and smells of the typical hair salon.

Among the services that appeal to men are an array of gentlemen’s facials, including sport, antiaging, sun damage repair, and back facials. One of our chemical peels, something men are more and more interested in, can be added to any facial. Men also enjoy special treatment for their hands, feet, and nails. That’s right men – hand, feet, and nail treatment. But not to worry, the treatment is done in a private men’s nail room where you can sit and read Sports Illustrated while getting a nail service. Also, let’s not forget every man’s favorite: massage. Spa Ninety-Seven Hundred specializes in custom full or upper body massage. There is no better stress reducer than Swedish relaxation massage, and for a treat he won’t forget, indulge him with the hot stone massage. The spa also has a custom built hydrotherapy shower, which a lot of men enjoy. The 15-minute Hydrotherapy Shower Massage has 12 body jets, an overhead rain shower, and cold water douse, and it puts forth 80 gallons of water per minute, creating a wonderful pretreatment relaxation therapy. With the recent addition of Jack Black skincare and body care, we are even more equipped to help with the selection of “no fuss” at-home skincare and body care, which men sometimes neglect. Also, wait until you see the selection of sunscreens guaranteed not to wreck his golf game or fishing trip. So, give a gift certificate to the special, deserving man in your life this Father’s Day. He will LOVE IT!

Fashion

The Finishing Touch here is not a single outfit that cannot be enhanced with the right jewelry. We spend so much time getting the clothing right, that often we forget to add the “punctuation mark.” Jewelry is the punctuation mark. If you have doubts about the importance of the right jewelry with any ensemble, just watch any of the award shows. The question every red carpet star is asked is “Who are you wearing?” And it always includes the jewelry designer. Sometimes the final appraisal for any wardrobe choice is based entirely on the jewelry the star selects to “punctuate” her wardrobe choice. Knoxville may not be Hollywood, and Harry Winston nor Cartier is likely not on our radar, but it is also unlikely that an “everyday watch” and simple wedding band will get the notice you hope to achieve with the outfit you have worked so hard to put together. The message is simple: Don’t stop dressing with your clothing choices. Be sure to include the right fashion jewelry before

completing your purchase. Here are just a few of the latest trends in fashion jewelry and always affordable at Next To New:

Electric Color • Jazz up that outfit with a punch of saturated color in your fashion jewelry choice. Orange is a big trend for summer! Add color to your ear, neck, or wrist. Deco Inspired • Vintage jewelry never

goes out of style, and it always makes a statement. It may be a pin, a gold chain necklace, or a delicate floral ring. But adding deco jewelry to your outfit in 2013 tells the world that you are both nostalgic and hip.

Raw Stones Rule • Beach-inspired stones are a natural for this summer’s fashions. Both shells and turquoise will enhance your clothing choice and ensure your summer outfit is not only complete, but noticeable.

Heavy Metals • If you prefer silver or if you prefer gold, buy a statement necklace that makes it clear to everyone that you are

both confident and trendy. It should be chunky and hard to miss.

“That’s a Wrap” Bracelets • Don’t

forget to emphasize your wrist. Leather straps with studs or crosses, multi-bangles in your metal choice, charm and bling bracelets, plus distinctive watches will all add to your punctuation mark. At Next To New, we will always add the perfect finishing touch!

Healthy Summer Skin: Tips for Every Age As people show more skin with the summer season, it is important to get into a skincare routine that fits your lifestyle. Extended time in the sun can result in unwanted wrinkles, blemishes, and sagging skin, not to mention more serious consequences like melanomas, scarring, and skin cancer. Current estimates show that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Fortunately, it only requires simple steps alongside a protective mindset to prevent skin damage at every stage of life. To maintain a healthy exterior this season, here are some tips for strong, glowing skin at any age.

20s 30s 40s 50+

Though you may not be worrying about wrinkles yet, your skin may start to show warning signs of damage. Now is the time to focus on prevention.

» Stay hydrated: Drinking water helps delay the appearance of wrinkles. » Quit smoking: Smoking strips your skin of elastin and collagen, leaving you at the risk of severely premature facial wrinkling. » Eat smart: Foods that are high in vitamin C and antioxidants help prevent wrinkles by reflecting UV radiation from the sun.

32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2013

This decade is the first time many see distinct signs of aging and skin damage, and it becomes necessary to build a more aggressive damage control and prevention regimen.

» Assess the damage: Take advantage of free health screenings at your local pharmacies or retailers. » Maintain reduced stress levels: Ask your pharmacist or clinician about the effects of cortisol and stress on your skin and weight. » Get acquainted with retinoids: Retinoid creams contain compounds found in vitamin A and are used to treat wrinkles, sun damage, and acne. Retinoid creams are available in both prescription and over-thecounter treatments. » Make sunscreen a habit: Use (and reapply) sunscreen throughout the day whenever you go outside.

Years of sun exposure can leave your skin with noticeable lines, blotchiness, or dryness.

» Limit exposure: Decreasing sun exposure is the best way to prevent skin cancer. » Moisturize regularly: While moisturizers won’t slow down the aging process, they can help soothe increasingly raw or irritated skin and can help strengthen collagen. » Add a little pep: Skin creams with peptides (small chains of protein molecules) can stimulate collagen and plump sagging skin.

For people age 50 and older, it’s critical to be aware of changes in your skin that may reflect the status of its health. » Self check: Monitor changes in your skin and look out for persistent pink, scaly patches and red or black pearly spots or bumps – these can sometimes be indicators of skin cancer. » See a dermatologist: By age 50, everyone should have a total body skin check to screen for skin cancer. » Continue good habits: Sunscreen is still an absolute must for this age range, and moisturizers and hydration are even more important than ever.

No matter what your age, everyone feels most confident when their skin is its healthiest. Visit your doctor or take advantage of free counsel from pharmacists and local health screenings. This season, take action to prevent and minimize skin damage, so your skin is nourished, protected, and healthy for many summers to come.

Schakolad Chocolate Factory

Lifestyle

When it comes to gift giving, you can’t go wrong with chocolate – and it’s even better if it comes from Schakolad Chocolate Factory. We sell a variety of more than 70 different truffles, nut clusters, and dipped fruit, including fresh strawberries year-round. Although my husband Andrew and I have only been owners of the Knoxville shop since February, we’re happy to share the joys of our chocolate with East Tennessee. No matter the occasion, we’ve got a sweet

treat for you. We dip almost anything in chocolate, including Twinkies, potato chips, pretzels, espresso beans, and much more. On top of that, we have hundreds of molds like doctors’ sets, tool sets, phones, pianos, and high-heeled shoes that we can customize with personal messages and different colors. Customers pretty much come in to Schakolad Chocolate Factory for any holiday that’s on the calendar, including Teacher’s Day and Secretary’s Day, not to mention the big holidays like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Easter. They also have their own personal holidays like birthdays and anniversaries. We’ve even had several husbands trying to get out of the doghouse for whatever reason! You may wonder what sets us apart from other chocolate retailers, and the answer is that our chocolate is very high quality. It is made European-style, meaning less sugar and no preservatives, while focusing more on the coco itself. All of our chocolate is gluten-free and has no preservatives, unlike the “regular” chocolate people are used to. We also offer vegan dark chocolate. Everything is hand-dipped here at our store, which is one reason we offer some things that other chocolate companies can’t. They will make it somewhere else and have it shipped ready to sell. Interested in treating your sweet tooth? Come visit us in Turkey Creek at 10944 Parkside Drive. We’re open from 11 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 865-6752626, visit www.schakolad.com/store34, or email turkeycreek@schakolad.com.

When it comes to wrought iron, there’s one place in Knoxville that has everything you need:

décor and gift shop, located in Bearden, specializes in handmade wrought iron. Owner Holly Honeycutt says the store’s 9th anniversary is what inspired the remodel. “We’ve been open since 2004 and are currently undergoing a remodeling project that will result in all kinds of NEW!” said Holly. “We’ll have a new look, new store hours (Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm), new neighbors, and lots of new inventory.” The wrought iron products sold at Ironic include wall decorations, bed

headboards, shelves, patio furniture, candle holders and lanterns, seasonal decorations, and much more. “One of our most exciting new things will be the introduction of a new line of hand-crafted wooden furniture from Ingrained,” said Holly. “The items are very complementary to our existing iron pieces and will look great in a home of any style.” Ingrained is a new line of locally made, handcrafted wooden furniture. “The Ingrained pieces are made from reclaimed wood, so each one has a unique story,” Holly continued. “A variety of woods are used, which also adds to the unique flair. The style is fairly rustic, but we have the ability to create custom pieces in the customer’s favorite style.” The reclaimed wood used for Ingrained comes from Amish communities in Pennsylvania and locally from surrounding areas. Ingrained furniture is made in a shop on the bank of the Tennessee River in Spring City by third-generation woodworkers. There are no veneers or particle board; just solid wood. The use of reclaimed wood is very important to the woodworking family for three reasons: First, reclaimed wood leaves less of an impact on the environment; second, every piece of reclaimed wood has a history – it might have been part of the old walking bridge in Chattanooga or the floor of an old home in Pennsylvania; and third, reclaimed wood has a beauty and patina that can’t be reproduced. All the Ingrained products are hand-planed and hand-scraped for a beautiful, unique, high-quality piece of furniture. Ingrained can create any finish a customer wants and build a special piece based on their ideas and needs. Customers don’t even pay more for custom jobs; the cost is simply based on wood and time. Ingrained offers tables of all kinds, including farmhouse, trestle, desks, coffee tables, sideboards, sofa tables, cricket tables, benches, large leaning mirrors, and more. The line fits in with Ironic’s other products because there’s

a natural connection between handmade furniture made locally with reclaimed materials and Ironic’s handmade iron pieces. They can be beautifully integrated into customers’ homes, inside or outside. All iron items at Ironic are double-coated with a rust-protective sealant to help prevent weathering. Ironic will also paint any item for a certain charge, depending on the size of the item. Customers also are allowed to take any item home on a trial basis. A check or credit card will be held for two days while the customer decides if the item is right for their home. “Ironic is different than other Knoxville home décor boutiques because of the quality and nature of our products,” said Holly. “Almost everything in the store is handmade and fit for indoor or outdoor use. We are also very hands-on in the buying process. Almost nothing comes from a traditional catalogue, so you won’t find our pieces in any other stores.” Ironic also offers many services to customers in addition to selling products. Gift certificates are available. Customers can also create a wish list to let family and friends know about items they’d like to receive for birthdays, holidays, or any other occasion. Engaged couples can create a registry to let guests know how they’d like to decorate their new home together. “My favorite thing about wrought iron is its versatility,” said Holly. “I can sell a similar piece to three different customers and know that it will look special in each home regardless of their overall style. A piece one chooses to be a grand focal point may just be a small accent to another.” Ironic is located at 5054 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. June in the Garden Do you know that I

haven’t planted a thing in my yard this year? I’m telling you this so you won’t be embarrassed if you haven’t either. Every day I had off (which there are few of this time of year) was either spent grocery shopping, cleaning, or going to doctors. If I was by any chance home, it was raining. So, how are things going in your yard? Have you also been putting off doing anything until it was warm and dry enough? I have decided that “warm and dry” may not be a weather cycle we get into this year, so maybe we had better just put on our raincoats and head out. The “to-do” list is long this month, so let’s get started: ›› Fungus is among us. This rain has brought better conditions than a petri dish for growing every type of fungi known in the area and some that aren’t. There are fungal spots on leaves, cankers on branches, and, most seriously, fungal infections in roots. If a plant is wilting in spite of plenty of water,

suspect root rot. If it appears to be dying from the bottom up, suspect root rot. The only way to really diagnose the problem is to dig down beside the root system and see what’s going on. Is it a swamp down there, and are the roots brown and mushy? It’s root rot. If you have questions, call us. ›› While we’re on the subject of disease, let me mention Impatien Downy Mildew. I talked about this last month, but there are still questions. This disease is a non-treatable fungus that is airborne and affects only Impatiens. It came in last year from growers outside the state. Our plants don’t have the disease, so we continue to sell them. If you had the disease last year, don’t plant them this year. If your neighbor buys his plants from someone who imports plants from other states and his have the disease, there’s no way to prevent the spread to your yard. If you have smart neighbors, go ahead and plant. The disease doesn’t spread to other plants

and is toxic only to regular Impatiens, not New Guinea or Sunpatiens! ›› This spring has also been very buggy. Again, keep a close eye on your plants so you can stop problem insects before they cause damage. Watch for holes in the leaves, sticky leaves, light spots on leaves, and brown spots on the back of leaves. Look for webs in the crotches or white or brown spots that move. If you can’t figure out what’s going on, bring us a piece of your plant to diagnose. ›› Continuing on a less than positive note, keep your eyes open for Rose Rosette. If you suspect you have the disease, bring in a branch or send us a photo for confirmation. If it is indeed Rosette, remove and destroy the plant, and don’t replant roses for at least a year. ›› On a happier note, you can still plant things now! Annuals and perennials can be planted throughout the summer. Even veggies can still be planted since the soil was so late to warm. Don’t give up! ›› I wish there was a deadly fungus that only affected weeds. There isn’t, so pull, hoe, and Preen on a regular basis to keep the population as low as possible. ›› Some perennials have gotten very lanky because of the lack of sunshine. Cut them back so they’ll be fuller and less prone to flop. Now is also the time to cut back spent flower stalks on iris and peonies, and remove dead foliage from spring bulbs. ›› Some annuals are also in need of a haircut. Don’t be afraid to cut them back, and give them a shot of fertilizer to make them bush back out and to renew blooming. Deadheading is also important to encourage re-blooming and prevent spent blooms from collecting in the branches and growing fungus and insect colonies. ›› Keep pinching back herbs to keep them bushy and full of new growth. Remember not to let them flower if you’re using them for cooking; they lose much of their flavor if they bloom. ›› Don’t scalp your lawn! Cutting too short weakens grass and makes it more vulnerable to insects, disease, and weeds. Keep mower blades sharp, and alter the direction in which you mow. ›› Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy your yard. Pick bouquets, harvest veggies, and smell the roses. Enjoy the beauty we’re surrounded with. Check our website and Facebook for summer sales and activities. That’s all for this month! Go play in the dirt!

hile you may enjoy the summer sun, your home’s roof doesn’t. As owner and founder of All Dry Roofing, I can say this. Your home’s roof system has two principal enemies: the sun and neglect. Sunlight has a huge degrading effect on your roof. More specifically, the sun’s UV rays, which weakens your roof system’s water proofing membranes. The same UV rays that damage curtains, carpets, furniture, and yes, burn your skin, also irreparably damages your roofs. However, because your roof goes fairly much unnoticed, except for that occasional glance when entering your driveway or mowing the lawn, your home’s roofing is being subjected to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Because most damage goes unnoticed, we neglect the condition of our roofs, sadly until we begin to notice water damage on our interior wall and ceiling surfaces, which can signal even a higher than anticipated repair bill to restore drywall, paint, wallpaper, and insulation.

So what’s the solution? Conduct a periodic inspection of your roof system from the safety of the ground. Do you see broken or missing shingles? Do you observe large amounts of shingle granules deposited at the end of your downspouts? Do you see any curling at the edges of your shingles? Ask yourself how old your roof is and whether you’ve answered yes to any of the questions above. Then call me at All Dry Roofing. While you may not be able to control the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays, you can control the further damage that can result from neglect. For fast, courteous service, and for the uncompromised quality and integrity you deserve, call me today.

Need Windows?

E

very home will need

replacement windows at some time in the future, but when will depend on a number of factors and variables. The desire to meet this growing need is what inspired me to launch a window and door replacement company that featured the high level of customer service that we remember from the past and that most of us believe no longer exists. Along with co-owner, Olen Rowe, we combined more than three decades of experience in the replacement window and door market to create the best and most respected name in the industry. We agreed on two guiding principles that we would use to build our company on. First, we would only sell and install the highest quality replacement windows and doors available in the marketplace today. Second, we would never compromise our individual integrity, insisting on the highest level of business ethics from all of our team members. Eight years

later we have earned the distinction of being the number one Infinity from Marvin dealer in the country. Why Infinity from Marvin windows? Infinity from Marvin is the custom replacement division of Marvin, and we have the exclusive rights to the Ultrex Fiberglass window. Given the opportunity to demonstrate the Infinity from Marvin “difference” to you, we are absolutely convinced that you will discover for yourself what we discovered: that Infinity from Marvin windows are your first choice available in replacement windows. Just as important, we’ve honored our second core commitment to remain true to our principle of personal corporate integrity. How have we accomplished this? By doing the right thing each and every time, doing what we say we’re going to do, and being there for our customers before, during, after, and beyond. We measure, install, service, and warranty what we sell. Why is this important to you? Well, should a warranty issue ever

Ahhh! The Summer To-Do List

The window of opportunity for your must-do summertime projects is indeed a short one, and if you’re planning on enjoying some time on the golf course, the beach, the patio, or Disneyworld, you could probably use a little help.

A

t Mr. Handyman, we have helped thousands of area homeowners complete that ever growing list of to-do’s before more costly repairs may be necessary, freeing up moms and dads to spend more quality time with their families. Mr. Handyman and its team of experienced and knowledgeable craftsmen are ready to help you tackle your summertime to-do lists. How about an attic or ceiling fan that can redirect hot summer air out of doors while leaving you more comfortable and taking a bite out of your cooling costs? It’s also a great time to spruce up your deck, patio, drive, and walks by power washing away last year’s accumulation of dirt, mold, and mildew. Also, don’t forget to reseal that deck to enhance its appearance while extending its lifetime. How about those gutters? Neglecting your gutters will not only damage your gutters, but it can also lead to rotted fascia boards and soffits. Also, when severely clogged, the result can cause water to back up under your home’s shingles, allowing water to leak onto interior ceilings and walls. This is also the perfect time of the year to install or replace your home’s aging storm door. Storm doors not only enhance your home’s appearance and value, but they also help reduce home energy costs as well. Got more on your list? We can help with those projects, too. Few of us have the DIY talents of Bob Vila, and even if you do, you likely don’t have the time. Why not let Mr. Handyman help tackle that growing DIY to-do list, and start planning today just how you’re going to enjoy your family’s fun in the sun this summer. Mr. Handyman

Save on Escalating Energy Costs with a Geothermal Heat Pump Rapidly escalating energy costs are

eroding homeowner discretionary incomes and could actually exceed monthly mortgage payments in the future. So what’s the solution? For many homeowners, a geothermal heat pump from Gent Geothermal Systems offers the most energy and cost efficient way of dealing with escalating energy costs. Bosch thermo technology, the most advanced and cost-effective system available anywhere and which uses the latest in green technology, takes advantage of the relatively constant temperature of the earth to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for your home. This allows your home’s HVAC system to provide extremely efficient heating and cooling all year long in virtually any climate and at a cost far below the cost of conventional HVAC technology found in most of our homes today. Bosch Geothermal Systems remove heat from the inside of your home in the summer months, transferring heat to heat exchangers installed in the ground. These same exchangers remove heat from the ground in the winter months and transfer this heat to

the inside of your home. These environmentally friendly systems from Bosch reliably heat and cool your home while reducing your energy bills by up to 70%. In fact, this same system can be used to heat water for your home by recovering “wasted” heat from your geothermal heat pump’s compressor. With payback on your initial investment in as little as five to seven years, what could be simpler? But a technologically advanced system requires installation by an experienced and professional technician. Gent Geothermal owner, Shane Gent, will carefully evaluate your home’s heating and cooling requirements, and then recommend a Bosch Geothermal System that can begin reducing your energy costs from day one. Fully licensed, bonded, and insured, Shane and his team of trained associates are available to answer all of the geothermal heat pump questions you might have, as well as provide you with a free, no-obligation quotation. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, consumers purchasing qualified systems can now take a one-time

New home construction is a great option for many people, but have you ever thought about a custom home instead of a cookie cutter house? I know, the word CUSTOM always sounds expensive. However, building a custom home isn’t necessarily more expensive, and your return on investment can be significantly higher. Building a custom home means more than choosing a floor plan from stock designs, selecting wall paint and paper, and picking out the bathroom fixtures. Truly custom homes are designed from the foundation up to meet your exact needs rather than what someone else expects you to want. Working with a custom home designer enables you to not only have your home laid out and look the way you want, but also have the functionality you need for your home office, your kitchen, and even your garage area. Jenny Blalock, designer/licensed contractor with Luxe Homes & Design, takes your designs from foundation to furniture and transforms your lifestyle needs into the home of your dreams. The More You Clean, the Dirtier It Gets? My husband, John, sometimes cracks me up. I have never in my life paid any attention to the cleanliness of grout lines and tile. Unless something is really filthy, I tend not to notice. But I often catch John examining floors inconspicuously when we are out, and it makes me giggle. Unlike me, he loves a challenge, and for the past five years, that challenge has been cleaning surfaces that home and business owners have struggled over with minimal results. Men love being the “hero,” and nothing makes John smile more than when a homeowner that has resolved themselves to ripping out their flooring changes their mind after he cleans. While many men come home and tell their wives about a day at the office, I am greeted with before and after pictures of floors, countertops, and driveways! I can honestly say I have learned more about flooring than I ever dreamed possible. If we are ever fortunate enough to build our

tile & grout

own home, I can rest assured that John will know exactly what type of floor to put in every room, as well as how to maintain it. If you own a tile and grout floor, you’ve probably learned that tile and grout cleaners and traditional cleaning methods can’t eliminate stubborn soil buildup located beneath the surface of your tiles or your grout lines. For years, I didn’t understand why mopping and scrubbing didn’t get results. Here’s a crash course on WHY your floors refuse to concede to your cleaning efforts. Did you know that your tiles and the grout around them are porous surfaces with millions of tiny pores that accumulate dirt and grime? As they are cleaned, only the top surface layer is exposed, and the very practice of mopping pushes the dirt already there deeper inside. So, the more you clean, the dirtier your tile and grout looks. How’s that for frustrating? So, what does it take to get them clean? Cleaning your tile and grout (and any other

p o ro u s s u r fa c e ) requires four components: heat, pressure, suction, and quality cleaning solution. Once Co-owner clean and sanitized, John a h i g h - q u a l i t y Fitzwilliam sealer that impregnates (gets down inside) the pores can be applied to minimize future cleaning efforts. Surface Doc cleans and seals everything from floors and concrete to shower doors, granite, slate, and marble. Give John a call today and schedule a no-hassle demonstration cleaning. getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. Yet are people really enjoying their outdoor spaces to the full potential? In most parts of the country, if their outdoor space doesn’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to this dilemma. By merging indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of bugs that come out in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with the interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when needing extra shade or insect protection. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

“The Beast in Its Tracks,” the new album from renowned singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, was released March 5. “In the year after my marriage ended, I realized that I had more new songs than I’d ever had at one time,” said Ritter. “Far from the grand, sweeping feel of the songs on ‘So Runs the World Away,’ these new songs felt like rocks in the shoe, hard little nuggets of whatever they were, be it spite, remorse, or happiness.” Ritter & The Royal City Band is celebrating the release of “The Beast in Its Tracks” with a North American tour. All concert tickets are bundled with a unique musical package. Ticket purchasers will also receive an immediate download of the album’s first single, “Joy to You Baby.” This is the sixth full-length recording from Ritter, who has been widely heralded by critics and fans alike.

Your oriental rugs are an important part of your home. They may be heirlooms, gifts, or just an addition you couldn’t do without. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we understand this and can clean even the most delicate rugs with our expert 11-step process. With 25 years of industry experience, you can trust us with your most precious rugs and carpets.

Our Oriental and area rug cleaning process includes:

1. Pre-inspection: We check for pre-existing conditions such a fading, dye migration, tears, and pulls, and take a photo of the rug. 2. Dye-stabilization test: Your rug undergoes tests to ensure the colors are stable and won’t run during the cleaning process. 3. Pre-vacuum: Aggressively agitate the rug with our state-of-the-art Badger machine to loosen the soil that regular vacuuming can’t remove. 4. Pre-condition: A mild cleaning detergent solution that’s specific to your rug is applied and brushed into the fibers to loosen the soil. 5. Washing: Based on the type of rug, it’s submerged or surface washed, then scrubbed again and rinsed very thoroughly with our Kinetico® softened water system. 6. Extraction: Excess water is removed by squeezing as much water as possible out of the rug with our unique extraction machine. 7. Neutralizing: Leaving the rug in a pH balanced condition is a must to ensure a soft feel to the fibers while the drying process begins. 8. Drying: The rug is taken to our temperature controlled drying chamber and hoisted on a drying pole. It takes 8-36 hours to dry depending on the type of rug. 9. Grooming & combing: Setting the pile and combing out the fringe is important to the finishing and pile lay of the nap. 10. Fringe: Fringe can hold soil that can’t be vacuumed out. We clean the fringe while hanging with our exclusive fringe table, using the best products available to make it as clean and bright as possible. 11. Post-vacuum and inspection: Your rug is vacuumed to remove loose fibers and to check if any stubborn spots or stains remain. If it doesn’t pass our rigorous inspection, it’s spot cleaned or even recleaned if necessary to ensure you’re totally satisfied. There are no shortcuts to achieve clean, healthy rugs. That’s why we’ve developed our own environmentally controlled rug washing studio and 11-step process to ensure your valuable rugs are cleaned safely. This is a specialized process that simply cannot be duplicated in your home or on your driveway. To learn more, call today or view an informative rug washing video at www.superiorofknoxville.com.

The Color Dilemma

We’ve all seen them. Model homes we’ve toured or pictures of showcase quality homes in upscale magazines we’ve read. Those “got it all together” homes without a thing amiss. But look more closely. Look at the wall and ceiling colors, which provide the perfect backdrop for everything else in those picture perfect homes.

or many of us, selecting the “right” colors can be an intimidating task, especially if we want to step out and become a bit bolder in order to achieve the look we’re after. As the owner of Precision Painting, I’m often asked to assist homeowners with suggestions and color recommendations, which I am all too happy to offer. The advantage to having earned the respect of hundreds of homeowners during the years is the unique insights I can bring to every new project, which comes from many years of experience. We see firsthand the latest, hot colors that the decorators are using today by Knoxville’s most fashion conscious homeowners. If you’re investing money on updating your home’s color schemes, avoid selecting outdated colors that don’t achieve that look you’re after and that might even impair your home’s resale value. Caramel Apple in a satin finish for a sunroom can be striking, while Applesauce Cake and Ramie are popular colors in baths and laundry rooms. We recently stripped some outdated wallpaper from a large dining room and painted the ceiling Copper in a metallic paint. We painted the walls with two coats of Coffee Kiss in an eggshell. We then applied the same colors to the nearby powder room in the foyer, but we switched the colors around, with Coffee Kiss on the ceiling and the walls in the metallic Copper. The walls actually appear to have texture, and everyone that enters that room wants to touch the walls. Every new visitor always asks “what did you do to the powder room walls?” Don’t let indecision delay or sidetrack your home improvement project. Let Precision Painting help you with your color dilemma. Call us today for a free estimate.

Defeat the Heat!

Help Your Landscape Thrive This Summer This coming summer

season could bring stifling heat that scorches landscapes or results in on-going water shortages. After more than two-thirds of the country experienced drought-like conditions in 2012, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, homeowners everywhere are making preparations for yet another year of extreme heat and a lack of precipitation. This season de-stress lawn and garden care with seven quick tips that will help reduce your outdoor water consumption while keeping your landscapes lush, healthy, and vibrant.

Southeast

TERMITE AND PEST CONTROL “Service Without Compromise”

1 Drought-Condition

Plants:

Plants can be conditioned for dry weather with a few changes in your irrigation schedule. As part of ongoing maintenance, decrease the frequency of watering and increase the amount of water penetration to encourage deeper rooting. Deeper roots will be more drought-tolerant. That said, it’s important to remember that more watering is needed in the early stages of seed development, including germination and establishment.

2 Don’t Be Overly Reactive:

Lawns tend to be overwatered, often with entire lawns being watered to avoid a few dry spots. Overwatering can cause numerous problems, including shallow root systems, increased disease, weed, or insect infestations, reduced drought tolerance, and increased thatch and excessive growth. A lawn does not need water until the color falls by 50%, at which time only one inch of water should be added.

3 Select Water-Efficient

By utilizing grass seed that requires less water, lawns are more resilient during periods of drought and easier to maintain (e.g. reduced time, energy, and resources). Consider a pure-bred, drought-tolerant seed which can stay green for up to three weeks without water and requires 30% less water year after year versus ordinary seed. The varieties were developed to help homeowners establish fuller, healthier, and greener lawns while efficiently using natural resources.

4 Install Water-Saving

Systems:

Install a drip irrigation system around trees and shrubs in your landscape to improve water efficiency. Drip irrigation applies water only when needed, minimizing water loss due to evaporation and preventing moisture from reaching spaces between plants – thus, limiting the chance of weed growth in those

areas. Rain barrels also can be used to harvest rainwater for later use in landscapes as irrigation.

5 Water Wisely:

Water at night or in the morning to reduce the chance of water being lost to evaporation in the mid-day heat. This timing allows grass to retain moisture but dry in enough time to prevent diseases that are more likely to develop in a wet lawn.

6 Retain Moisture With

Mulch:

Spread mulch when seeding new areas to add a protective layer on top of soil. The mulch allows soil to retain moisture during the critical seed germination and establishment stages. The clippings from mulching mowers also serve the same purpose – preserving soil moisture and nutrients for growing grass.

7 Fertilize Thoughtfully:

Fertilization supplies plants with essential nutrients for strength, uniform growth, and a healthy, fibrous root system. A vibrant and healthy plant makes the best use of available water, meaning less water is needed over time. There also is less chance of the plant being “burned” or dried out to a point beyond recovery. Fertilizers, however, should not be applied during periods of drought. Apply these tips and you can enjoy your summer and have a healthy, green landscape.

This free event takes place on Tuesday, June 18, at the Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center (MTREC). The event is ideal for homeowners who want to get the most out of their yards, whether that be creating a beautiful lawn or managing a small fruit orchard. The highlight of the field day will be three hands-on informational sessions. invited to bring in specimens. Also, Debbie Joines, manager of UT Extension’s Soil, Plant, and Pest Center, will be on hand to provide free soil pH analyses. Those interested in this service should bring a sandwich bag full of the soil they wish to be tested. “The purpose of Fruits of the Backyard is to offer homeowners and even commercial producers an opportunity to learn about lawn

and garden management strategies that are both effective and economical,” says Kevin Thompson, MTREC director. “It’s especially important for the growing number of novice gardeners to have a plan of action in place so they can enjoy the fruits of their labor.” Fruits of the Backyard is from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm on Tuesday, June 18. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 931-486-2129 or visit http:// middletennessee.tennessee.edu. MTREC is located on Highway 31, just minutes south of Nashville. Take exit 53 from I-65 and follow the signs to Columbia. MTREC is on the east side of Hwy 31. The Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center is one of 10 research facilities operated by the UT Institute of Agriculture. In addition to its agricultural research programs, the institute also provides instruction research and public service through the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, and UT Extension offices in every county in the state.

James White’s Fort will feature some new activities this year. Among them will be a Cherokee language lesson, a hand drum demonstration, primitive tools for the children to try, and a lecture on the Trail of Tears as 2013 marks the 175th anniversary of the forced removal. In addition to the new features, the event will also include activities that have proven to be popular during the past several years. Traditional Cherokee dances will be performed, along with Cherokee storytelling. In

the afternoon, a highlight of the day will be the reenactment of the signing of the Treaty of the Holston, which originally took place in Knoxville in 1791. Nice-As-New Consignment

O

some in the past, homeowners and renters alike are now flocking to high-end consignment furniture galleries like Knoxville’s own Consign To Design. “I think consignment furniture shopping is the new choice for decorating your home, whether you are on a budget or want a ‘green’ alternative,” says Consign To Design co-owner, Kristi Hickey. “Spurred on by our challenging economy, consignment furniture has grown enormously during the last few years.” What seems to shock customers the most is both the quality and selection available at Consign To Design. Expect to find brand names on many items at up to 80% off. Most of the gently-used furniture, home décor, and art items are as nice-as-new. Actually, you will discover that most of the furniture at Consign To Design is equal in both quality and condition to the furniture in your own home, and you wouldn’t discard an item simply because it was two or three years old! Looked at another way, every piece of furniture in your home, although purchased new, is now used and worth far less today than what you originally paid. “Much of what we have on display is from high-end communities,” offered David Hickey, Kristi’s spouse and co-owner. “People move,

downsize, and redecorate, all of which creates an abundance of high-quality furniture and accessories that are looking for a new home, and at just a fraction of their original retail cost.” What would you do with the money you could save on quality, nice-as-new furniture? Italy is incredible in the fall, Hawaii in the winter, the Caribbean in the spring, and Alaska in the summer.

Here are some simple rules to follow:

» High-end furniture consignment galleries turn their inventory quickly, so shop early and often. » Plan your room. Tour the entire gallery, and then begin creating your wish list. » Don’t procrastinate. Items are usually one-ofa-kind and sell quickly. » Visit often. Because items sell quickly, inventory turns quickly as well. What is not in store today may be available tomorrow. Curious? Visit Consign To Design to discover one of the Knoxville area’s best kept secrets. Consign To Design – Where Knoxville buys and sells nice-as-new.

Lighting

You don’t go to bed when the sun goes down, and your outdoor fun doesn’t have to end when night arrives. Strategically placed lighting can help keep your outdoor living space safe and inviting well into the evening. When choosing lights for your backyard, deck, or patio, choose options specifically designed for outdoor use. Indoor lights can’t hold up to the weather outdoors and could pose a safety risk. The American Lighting Association recommends using low-voltage mini lights concealed in trees, under steps, railings, or benches to light decks, porches, and patios. You can also install spotlights in nearby trees and point the illumination toward your outdoor living space. Solar lights are also a great option

for outdoors, since they cost nothing to operate and create a softer light than traditional electric bulbs.

Mosquito Trap

In many areas of the country, the arrival of warm weather also means it is mosquito season. The biting insects are more than just a nuisance; they’re also a health risk since they can spread West Nile virus, an infection that can cause serious, lifealtering disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fortyeight states reported more than 5,000 cases of West Nile in 2012, the CDC reports. If you live in an area with a significant mosquito problem, it may be a good idea to invest in a mosquito trap. These traps can service an acre of ground and should be placed between living spaces and mosquito breeding spots like standing water or bushes and at least 30 to 40 feet away from peopled areas. You can also have your area treated by a pest control company.

Fire Pit

Even on hot summer nights, there’s something enchanting about a fire pit in your outdoor environment. Whether you opt to have something built into your patio or deck or purchase something portable from your local garden or home improvement

Strategically placed lighting can help keep your outdoor living space safe and inviting well into the evening. store, a fire pit or chiminea can add both ambiance and warmth to your outdoor environment. You can find a size and style to fit your outdoor design and needs, whether you choose a ceramic chiminea for roasting marshmallows or a large fire pit to create warmth and ambiance. When choosing a fire element for your backyard, keep in mind the importance of scale. Your fire pit should be big enough to provide heat, light, and ambiance, but not so large that it overwhelms the space. Keep flames away from combustible surfaces, like furniture or stored wood, and never leave your fire unattended, especially when there are small children or animals around. Finally, make sure you always have a fire extinguisher on hand when using a fire pit, and follow the manufacturer’s directions for use. Your outdoor fun can go all day long – and well into the night – when you prep your backyard with the right tools and features to maximize comfort and enjoyment. June 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Start Your Engines!

Five Fast Fixes

and Tips for a Summer-Ready Car ith summer just around the corner, it’s time to get your car in tip-top shape to withstand hot days and long road trips. Summer driving requires your car to run differently; some adjustments and inspections are important to ensure your vehicle lasts season to season. Follow these five fast fixes and inspections to cruise through the summer and avoid roadside headaches. Tire Care

De-Winterize

Inspect Hoses and Belts

Check the AC

Tires perform differently in different weather conditions, so as the weather changes, it’s important to check tire pressure and tire tread. To check tire tread, see if the built-in “wear bars” are visible. These are narrow strips of rubber across the tires that appear when the tread is worn down to one-sixteenth of an inch. If you can see wear bars, your tires need to be replaced.

De-winterizing your car is easy and affordable. First, check all the fluid levels – coolant, transmission, differential, power steering, and brake fluid – to make sure there aren’t any leaks. It’s also a good idea to change the oil between seasons, as oil gets thick and collects condensation if it sits in the engine all winter. It’s also important to thoroughly clean the undercarriage of your car after a long winter, especially if you live in a snowy climate. To avoid spending extra money on detailing, clean the undercarriage yourself using a basic water hose or high-pressure cleaning system. In just a few minutes, you can ensure your vehicle is ready for the new road conditions and help you avoid any unnecessary issues.

The key to comfortable, safe summer driving is keeping the engine cool, and hoses and belts play a huge part in helping your engine run properly. Hoses pump coolant to and from the engine block, and belts run the fan that cools the system further. If the hoses crack or the belts snap, the radiator will quickly overheat, leaving you stranded. Check hoses for cracks, leaks, and loose connections. Hoses should be firm, never soft and malleable, and belts can be visually checked for damage. If anything is noticeably wrong, get it fixed immediately, before you’re stranded in the summer heat.

Your air conditioning system will be working overtime in the summer, so take time to test it to make sure it’s working properly sooner rather than later. Since the vehicle’s refrigerant is under high pressure and harmful to the atmosphere, it’s best to leave any inspection or maintenance to a qualified professional. Mechanics can easily trap and recycle used refrigerant with the proper tools, and you can drive off with confidence you’ll stay cool all summer.

Paint Protection Winter can be tough on a car’s exterior, and sunshine will reveal every nick, chip, and scratch in your vehicle’s paint. Restoring your ride’s original factory finish takes only minutes with the easy-to-apply touch-up paint products that are available in hundreds of colors for domestic and imported vehicles. This will not only make your car look great, but it will also protect the damaged surface from rusting and becoming a big, expensive problem.

History

By S h a n n o n Fo s t e r - B o l i n e

Hidden in Plain Sight:

Historic Lake Forest ne truth I know

about people is that they are curious. I’m not completely certain, but I’m fairly sure that from the inception of private dwellings, humanity’s overarching curiosity about what’s inside someone else’s house sprang forth. It’s a leap I understand, but seriously, don’t you wonder what’s in that house you drive by every day… the one on the corner that reminds you of “so and so’s” place from when you were a kid? It certainly seems that some houses and neighborhoods inspire within us the desire to dream, to wonder, to wish for just a moment to peer inside the homes that comprise the communities in which they are found. For me, the historic neighborhoods in Knoxville hold that special power to pique my curiosity. They make me feel like I’m in another era, or they inspire me to want to bring life back to a house that has seen better days. One of those special neighborhoods is Lake Forest. Situated in South Knoxville, approximately four miles from downtown, this charming little neighborhood will whisk you away in a heartbeat. Much like its sister automobile suburb of Lindbergh Forest and the nearby Colonial Village, this community has narrow, curving roads that meander up and 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2013

over its wooded hills. Forget the GPS. Put down the map. Let yourself step into this quaint neighborhood and get lost. Don’t worry; you can’t get too lost. While there may be boundary disputes, or maybe it’s just boundary confusion, Knox County defines this neighborhood as lying on the east side of Chapman Highway between E. Red Bud Road to the north and Eastwood Drive to the south. Comprised of 17 streets, many have similar names – such as Lake Forest Drive, E. Lake Forest Drive, Lake Forest Circle, and Lakewood Drive – which twist and turn and sometimes change names within the blink of an eye. Within these

winding streets you will find perfect examples of post war 1940s brick cottages, Cape Cods, and the occasional mid-century modern ranch. For the most part, it’s one adorable cottage-style home after another on wooded, azalea laden lots, dotting the streets of one of the official Dogwood Trails in Knoxville. Does your curiosity have you wondering what it costs to live in this historic neighborhood? According to the Knoxville Association of Realtors data, since 2010 there have been 19 home sales. The average price to live in a house in this little piece of forested land is $120,558. The average square footage is 1,855 square feet, with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. The highest sale was in 2011 at $163,000 for a 2 bed, 2.5 bath, and the lowest sale was in 2012 for $68,500 for a 2 bed, 1.5 bath. Many homes have hardwood flooring, arched doorways, small porches, and generous lots. But beyond the home sales data, there is the community. The neighborhood organization’s mission statement is: “The Lake Forest Neighborhood Association exists to foster a sense of community and to enhance the quality of life for all individuals within our neighborhood. We believe that all people of our neighborhood have a right to be heard regardless of race, sex, age, national origin, or religious beliefs. We promote community involvement to improve the safety and beauty of our neighborhood. Our ultimate goal is to form a close knit community with area residents, to work together for the collective good of our neighborhood, and to have fun doing so.” Driving through Lake Forest the other day, the residents waved at me as I slowly passed by them working in their yard or chatting to one another. It would seem their mission is well on its way to being accomplished. Go ahead, embrace your natural curiosity. Take a drive through Lake Forest, and discover one of Knoxville’s lesser known historic gems.

The Beach and the Boardwalk

›› The fun: If you’re lucky enough to live by the ocean or a lake or if you’re visiting one on vacation, the ultimate in summer fun is easily within reach. You only live once, right?

Picnics and Barbecues

›› The fun: Whether impromptu or formally planned, picnics and barbecues with friends are a welcome part of summer. People of all ages enjoy socializing casually outdoors, playing classic yard games, and, of course, indulging in grilled delights. Planning a gathering? Have everyone bring an outdoor game or food to share to cut down on hosting hassles. ›› The food: The grill is the focal point of any picnic or outdoor party. Whether it’s ribs, chicken, or brisket, saucy barbecue is the star of the show. Add some fresh grilled veggies and you have a meal that will be quickly devoured.

Summer fun paired with fantastic food is the perfect combination to create long-lasting memories. So get out and enjoy some of your city’s events, or call a few friends over for a patio party. 70

Schakolad is one of the only truly custom chocolate boutiques in the area. “I love working with the chocolate; it lets me tap into my creative side,” said Keli. “I also love serving a product that I am proud of. Business

The Competition Throughout the course of a year,

I am afforded the opportunity to meet with hundreds of small business owners. Frequently, while helping our clients develop their individual marketing strategies, the topic of competition arises. Their competitive responses vary widely, from complete indifference to rage. I actually had one small business owner state that he would cause physical harm to his principal competitor if given the opportunity. While I didn’t take him seriously, it was apparent from his comments that his competition had really gotten under his skin. Competition is inevitable. In fact, it can be downright helpful. I recently listened to the CEO of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange being asked during an interview about the competitive pressures his company was experiencing from competitive exchanges. He was most gracious in his response. While acknowledging the competitive pressures that the CME faces, he reminded the interviewer

that, if it were not for competition, his exchange would still be trading in butter and eggs as it had earlier in its 100-plus year history. How do you respond to your competitors? Ignoring them is unwise. It’s important to evaluate them closely to try to discern any changes they may be implementing which might be signaling a marketplace change. You also need to monitor them for potential opportunities which might be successfully exploited. I’m sorry, but rage is just stupid. I’ve observed numerous small business owners, and a few big ones, too, who are virtually obsessed with their competition. They often spend more time contemplating their competitor’s next move than they do implementing their own marketing strategy. Rage has the potential to paralyze a small business owner, taking them out of their game as they remain preoccupied with their competition. The owner of a small retail electronics store was asked by his landlord if he

thought it might be advisable for him to relocate since Best Buy was going to be moving into the same retail plaza. The owner, instead, used this worst case scenario to his full advantage. He decided to focus on differentiating his electronics store from Best Buy by promoting his associates’ superior product knowledge. Best Buy brought in the customers, many of whom visited his store as well. His strategy paid off, and he was rewarded with double digit growth year after year. What does the competition manifest in you? Ignore them, or express rage, at your own peril. Study them, successfully differentiate yourself, and your competition might be the best thing that ever happened to your small business.

Silence is Golden BUSINESS BASI C S by Beth Townsend It’s an old phrase for a seemingly forgotten era, when a majority of people considered quiet time to be treasured time. In today’s culture, it brings with it the condemnation of non-productivity. It seems we have become convinced that taking a breather means we have lost some invisible race as others pass us by. Recently I had coffee with a friend of a friend who was in a crisis. The details are private, but she was on the cusp of making several life decisions that would impact her career, family, and health significantly. Her stress level was such that she was under a doctor’s supervision. As we talked, it became apparent that she needed rest and reflection. Her mind was spinning as fast as the many voices offering her advice. In a panic, she had reached out to others, and the voices were loud, conflicting, and, while well meaning, some detrimental. Having been there before, I can relate to the need for help. It’s natural to call out to others. However, it’s important to remember that others speak from their own experience and history and may not have wisdom you should apply.

My friend was in need of reflection and the confidence to put her own experience to work. While I’m a huge proponent of asking for help, choosing who to talk to becomes paramount in getting sound counsel. 1. Get alone and get quiet. If you’re a person of faith, pray, listen, and talk to others who share your faith. Then take time to weigh your options, calm your fears, and think about the affects of your decisions. You likely know what to do, you just haven’t given yourself the right to decide out of fear you will make a wrong decision. 2. Get outside, take a walk. Once you’ve made a mental commitment, then make a physical one. If you get outside and expand your horizon, it helps clear your mind. If you think within four walls, you’re likely to think in a box. Get outside, move your body, and loosen your creativity. It’ll make you feel better, which will improve your ability to think clearly while releasing tension that keeps you feeling bound. 3. Believe in yourself. You don’t need others as much as you think you do. Your life is built on your experience, and that experience has taught you valuable lessons unique

to your situation. You know what’s worked for you, what hasn’t worked for you, and what’s likely to bring change that brings positive results. Take time to think through your situation alone.

4. Face reality.

Deal with what is, not what you wish. While you can hope and dream for what you want, you must make the decisions that lead there. Often our greatest lessons come from stepping out of our comfort zones and going for what we feel driven to pursue. Need direction? We all do. While asking for help can be good, take a step back and get quiet. After all, silence is golden!

Relationships

by D e a nn a B r a n n, Ph.D.

Marriage Issues vs. Mother-in-Law Issues Here’s how to know the difference Marriage, as wonderful as it can be, cer-

tainly has its challenges – especially when you throw your relationship with your motherin-law into the mix. Whether you get along with your mother-in-law most of the time, some of the time, or rarely, this relationship is like no other relationship you have. You may think you can turn to your husband for help maneuvering around the landmines – after all, he knows you, and he knows his mother. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. What often happens when you do turn to your husband is that two different issues get mixed together. What starts out as one matter (a mother-in-law/daughter-in-law issue) often quickly moves into another (a marital issue). When issues get compounded like this, neither one ends up getting resolved, and they both often become worse. To get unstuck, you must fight one battle at a time. Learning how to identify what part of the disagreement is a marital issue and what part is a mother-in-law/daughter-in-law issue is vital.

Etiquette

Here are some pointers: It is a mother-in-law/daughter-in-law issue when: » Your husband clearly gets your issues with his mother, and you and he are both on the same page. » Your husband can listen to your concerns without getting defensive or protective of his mother (even when he may not completely agree with you). » You and your husband can come up with solutions together to make the situation with his mother better. » You want your husband to be more of a sounding board than to fix the problem.

It becomes a marital issue when:

» You want (or expect) your husband to fix his mother or fix the problem. » You start arguing about his mother, but then the fight spreads to other issues between the two of you. » As you start talking about the issue you

have with his mother, you become keenly aware of how much you’re losing respect for your husband. » You want to cut off all ties to his side of the family, and you’re angry with him when he refuses to do so. If you have a marital issue, addressing that first will put you in a better position to work on the mother-in-law/daughter-in-law issue. Not only will that improve your marriage, but it will also go a long way toward helping you resolve your in-law issues. It’s a win-win! Professional Etiquette Today, more companies are looking to etiquette experts to help transform their employees to the needed professionals they must be to compete in this global market. So, here’s a preview of what professional etiquette is. Let’s start with telephone manners. Here are some things to consider: » Having a positive tone and voice when answering the phone is crucial. It’s the first image your customers have of your company. Are you friendly? Do you act like you’re interested in why they’ve called? Do you make them want to do business with you? These are just a few questions going through a customer’s mind when interacting with someone on the phone at a business. It’s also important to never place callers on hold without their permission and never for more than 30 seconds without giving them the option of calling back later or leaving a message. » Be positive at work. No one likes to work with others who complain and are often negative, as it’s very unproductive 74 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2013

and tends to bring the entire atmosphere of the workplace down. If you have an official complaint, then administer the complaint through the proper channels. Besides that, be cheerful, positive, and productive at work. » It’s very unprofessional to gossip, but especially at work. Gossiping is a very destructive force that literally leads to drops in production, declining company moral, and even a loss of overall profit. Be professional at all times. Look for the positive in those you work with, work well as a team to reach optimal performance, and keep unproductive conversation at bay. » Take responsibility for your actions. A professional knows that some days we succeed and some days we fail, but those who really succeed are those that learn from their failures and move on. Sometimes we spend more time trying to cover our mistakes than the time it would take to take responsibility for our mistakes and then move forward to do more wonderful things. Take ownership and move forward. » Give 100%. Sometimes employees lose

interest in an assignment or project and start slacking on their work ethics. Give 100% every time, every project, and every day, and you’ll always end up ahead by giving your all. » Help others succeed. The real test of a great leader is how many great leaders you helped build. Some people think that as long as they look out for themselves, they’ll always end up on top. This isn’t true. They may have some success with this as their motto; however, long-term success comes from helping others succeed and, in turn, helping ourselves. Be on the winning team. Show integrity, honesty, character, and moral conviction every day, and you’ll have a recipe for success.

Fat Reduction That Works ith spring and

summer just around the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically studied non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape.

If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device which utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices which can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas

of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered, for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA last year, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, SmartLipo may be the answer. SmartLipo was the first laser cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). It is a minimally invasive procedure that is an enhancement to the well-established procedure known as tumescent microcannular liposuction. SmartLipo is an in-office procedure that is performed with local anesthesia and requires very little downtime. Most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated with this device. The neck,

arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of both the Liposonix and SmartLipo procedures in Knoxville. We would enjoy meeting with you to discuss which procedure would best suit your needs. Call to schedule a complimentary consultation and receive discounted pricing through the month of June.
