EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2015

While last month was devoted to honoring moms, June is set aside to honor dads and all they do for their families. Let your dad know just how much he is appreciated. It can be with a gift, a family fun day, or just a phone call to let him know he is loved. My dad holds a special place in my life, and though he is now gone, he is sorely missed. I think of him each time I see a father enjoying family time or an elderly man who is still active with his daily routine. Cherish the time you do have with your father, and make his day as well as every day special. All of us at Everything Knoxville wish all dads a very Happy Father’s Day and hope everyone enjoys the start of the summer season.

THE ART OF A BEAUTIFUL LIP One of the most frequent questions we get is “Are my lips going to look too big?” There is such a stereotype with filler injections in the lips. As a national trainer, Brooke Nix, PA, has witnessed many techniques with the outcome of a poor looking lip, lumpiness, or a “duck lip.” Choosing the most experienced injector and allowing the injector to guide you through the process of choosing a filler will allow you to achieve the desired look. In addition, Donna Cress, NP, states the key to injection is to complement the shape of the natural lip and to replace the fullness that has receded with age, as well as address fine lines and wrinkles. The goal of our providers is to give the appearance of a youthful lip without anyone knowing you had work done. The combination of a trained, experienced injector, and the correct filler for your lips is crucial to achieving a beautiful result. We offer many fillers, including Resylane Silk, Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, or Beoltero.

During a complimentary consultation, Donna Cress, NP, and Brooke Nix, PA, will help you choose which is right for you and help dissolve the stereotype that exists.

MARBLE ALLEY LOFTS Downtown Knoxville’s Newest Landmark

S

CHEDULED FOR completion

this fall, Marble Alley Lofts is a new, exciting, and upscale mid-rise apartment community coming to life in the very heart of historic downtown Knoxville at 300 State Street. This new venture is the creation of developer, Buzz Goss, and TDK Construction. This new venture can best be described as a “transformative piece” in Knoxville’s evolving downtown landscape. With several developmental phases planned, Marble Alley Lofts will include residential apartments and retail and commercial spaces. Constructed by TDK Construction, Marble Alley Lofts has selected RAM Partners, LLC as its property management agency, which is directed by Ram Partners, LLC Area Vice President Gabriele Preston. EK: Since we introduced Marble Alley Lofts in our October issue of Everything Knoxville, how has the building progressed? Gabriele: The project has progressed very well. Like most large construction projects, there have been some weather related delays, but the parking garage is complete, and Sections 1 and 2 of the building are in various framing and rough-in stages. Our Project Manager indicated that if all continues to

6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2015

go well, Section 1 with the first 112 one- and two-bedroom apartment homes will be ready for occupancy on or about October 15th, and in Section 2, another 80 homes will be ready for occupancy mid-November. Section 2 will provide some of efficiency or studio apartment homes as well. The last Section, 3, is scheduled to be ready sometime at the end of February. EK: Describe the response you’ve received so far. Gabriele: We’re excited to say that we have experienced quite a bit of early interest. Most people who need or want a change in their housing situation generally don’t start their search until about 60 to 90 days out. Marble Alley Lofts is still 120 days out, but we’ve already leased several apartment homes. At this time, we do not have any more large, A4 style, one-bedroom apartment homes available, and there are only a few B3 style, two-bedroom apartment homes left. We are encouraging those that are interested in Marble Alley Lofts to reserve an apartment home as soon as they’ve made their decision to live at Marble Alley Lofts. EK: Can interested individuals or families see or tour Marble Alley Lofts yet?

Gabriele: One can observe the construction process standing or walking along the perimeter of the property. We hope to start “hard hat” tours sometime in August. We now have a mobile leasing office on-site. Interested individuals or families can visit Monday through Friday between 10 am and 6 pm or on Saturday between 10 am and 4 pm. We have pictures and samples of what the interior finishes will look like and can offer visitors a good feel for what the community will be like. EK: Who from RAM Partners will oversee the management of Marble Alley Lofts? Gabriele: We just transferred our Property Manager, Melissa Bennett, to Marble Alley Lofts. Melissa had been overseeing another brand new apartment community that TDK developed and constructed in Johnson City named the Reserve. TDK Construction is also building Marble Alley Lofts. Melissa’s husband was recently transferred back to Knoxville. The timing was perfect with our need to fill this position at Marble Alley Lofts. Melissa has been

Melissa Bennett

employed with RAM Partners since January 2014. She came to us with seven years of multifamily management experience. Melissa is a graduate of Kansas State University and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. We are glad to have her back in the Knoxville market. EK: Has there been any changes with the features and amenities since October? Gabriele: Yes. In fact, one of our early tenants who leased an apartment home asked for a walk-in shower. With that request, TDK Construction felt it was a good feature that many other people would like as well, so a large number of apartment homes were changed from a tub/shower combination to a walk-in shower with a frosted glass door. Bathtubs are still available in certain style homes and in much of Section 2, as the change was made after most of the framing was completed on Section 2. Also, during one of the inspections, TDK’s Director of Development changed some of the electrical outlet features to include USB ports in the bedrooms and in the kitchen. It has been our experience with TDK that they are very flexible, and when they see an opportunity to improve their product, they easily make those changes right there on the job site. Other interior apartment features include granite kitchen and bath countertops, stainless steel kitchen appliances, including side-by-side refrigerator with built-in ice maker, dishwasher, self-cleaning range, and over the range microwave oven, stackable washer and dryer, 42” hardwood shaker style cabinetry, hardwood-inspired plank flooring throughout kitchen, living, and dining areas, and ceramic tile flooring in the bathrooms. Another very cool feature is the windows/ doors on the ground floor apartments along

the perimeter of the building. These will be storefront type, floor-to-ceiling height. Patios and balconies are apartment specific. The building amenities include a state-ofthe-art fitness center, courtyard with reflective fountain and seating, saltwater swimming pool, sundeck, seating and grilling station, game room with complimentary beverage station, lounge, flat screen televisions, billiard and card tables, and a clubroom and lounge areas integrated with flat screen televisions, computers, and a printer. EK: The location of Marble Alley Lofts is so desirable. Is that attracting most of your prospective apartment home tenants? Gabriele: The location is not only desirable, but it is truly the driving force behind Marble Alley Lofts’ early success. The community is in walking distance from everything great about downtown Knoxville. One couldn’t have a better address than 300 State Street. The building sits between State Street and South Central Street and is bounded by Union and Commerce Avenue. It’s also perfect for pet owners. A PetSafe Downtown Dog Park is located next to the new Marble Alley Lofts at the intersection of Summit Hill Drive and Central Avenue. Marble Alley Lofts also will provide a pet washing station as an amenity for our pet owners. In addition, there are a variety of area parks to enjoy as well, such as Krutch Park just a few minutes away. World’s Fair Park is a 15 minute walk from Marble Alley Lofts. Volunteer Landing, a beautiful riverfront park that runs parallel with the Tennessee River, is also less than a mile away and just a 20 minute walk from the property. There is just so much to do downtown, especially outdoors. Residents will be able to easily hop onto a downtown greenway, including

Second Creek, Neyland, and James White Greenways – all part of a connected 18.1 mile greenway system. EK: What about parking? That can be frustrating, especially in the fall when UT attracts so many visitors on game days. Gabriele: Every apartment home includes a private parking spot inside Marble Alley Lofts’ exclusive parking garage. There are 368 spaces available inside the parking garage and 27 surface spaces. Residents can rent extra parking spaces on a first come, first serve basis. Guest parking spaces are also available. With most conveniences in walking distance from the property, including an Enterprise rental car office, I wouldn’t be surprised to soon meet residents who don’t own a car. It’s just not necessary. EK: How can our readers learn more about all of the opportunities at Marble Alley Lofts? Gabriele: I would encourage those that are interested to visit our website first at www.marblealleylofts.com. Of course we also encourage prospective tenants to visit our on-site Marble Alley Lofts Visitor Center. If someone would like to reach me personally, they can send me an email at gpreston@rampartnersllc.com. EK: Is there anything else you would like to add? Gabriele: I really would like to invite all of your readers to discover for themselves all of the wonderful opportunities that Marble Alley Lofts can offer them. I am confident they will be just as impressed as I was when I was first introduced to this truly one-of-a-kind experience.

LAURA GOFF DESIGNS Custom Stained Glass

W

HILE THERE are the obvious tech-

nical aspects of working with and designing stained glass, it is the artistic component of this craft that is my passion and has captured my imagination for nearly three decades to become my life’s work. I guess it was my grandmother’s influence on me as a child that started me on my journey. She would fill jars of varied shapes, sizes, and textures with colored water. Placed on a shelf that would allow the afternoon sun to illuminate them, I was mesmerized by the lovely patterns of light they would cast on the surrounding walls and floor. My parents encouraged me as well, and when my father began to pursue stained glass as a hobby, I began to appreciate both the technical and creative aspects of this art form. After completing my bachelor’s degree in Art History at UT in 1986, I spent six months in Europe immersing myself in art and architecture. It was then that I truly fell in love with stained glass and decided to make creating art glass my life’s calling. Since then, I have created thousands of stained glass windows. I have served in many positions in the Stained Glass Association of America, where I have also taught Introduction to Glass Painting. I love creating art glass, and my passion is best demonstrated in the high-quality and diverse products that I create at my Laura Goff Designs studio in Knoxville. Today I work hand-in-hand with homeowners, businesses, and churches who wish to create something truly unique for their homes, places of business, or places of worship. Also, while I’m the artist, I’m also a facilitator, helping my clients express their very own artistic natures through glass art. While there are a few limitations to how glass can be used, there are no limitations on my imagination or skills. I design stained glass, leaded glass, beveled glass, and sand blasted glass. My passion is hand-painted and kilnfired stained glass. All is right with the world when I have a paintbrush in my hand. I often design cabinet doors, entry doors, sand blasted commercial logos, and ecclesiastical windows. I create antique mirror walls and decorative mirrors. I also repair and restore stained glass. If you would like to discover just how glass can be creatively used throughout your entire home or facility, and to create the one-of-a-kind, designer-inspired works of glass art that will truly put the “custom” into your custom home, office, or church, I invite you to visit my studio Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm or to call me to set up a personal consultation.

Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery

N

OTHING IN MY CAREER

as a plastic surgeon is as rewarding as the smile on the face of a patient whose life has been changed for the better as a result of their surgery. The smile of a woman whose appearance has been restored through reconstructive breast surgery, the mother whose child’s lip or palate has been repaired, or a patient whose self-esteem has been boosted thanks to an aesthetic procedure are just a few of the many patients who I get the opportunity to help on a daily basis. Regardless of whether their smile is the result of reconstructive or cosmetic surgery, it serves to reaffirm my passion for what I do everyday. My father was instrumental in launching the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in the late 1970s, and I was (and still am) inspired by the love he had for his patients and his profession. I don’t really remember a time in my life when I did not want to be a surgeon and follow in my father’s footsteps.

Nothing in my career as a plastic surgeon is as rewarding as the smile on the face of a patient whose life has been changed for the better as a result of their surgery. The journey to where I am now took me from coast to coast and many points in between. I attended medical school at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, followed by a general surgery residence at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. It was then on to plastic surgery residency at the Texas Medical Center in Houston and finally to California and a craniofacial surgery fellowship at Stanford, which I completed in 2010. After being in practice in Houston for the past few years, my family and I are happy to be back in East Tennessee. My new practice, Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery, is in the Park West Plastic Surgery building located at 9239 Park West Boulevard, Suite 202 in Knoxville. Craniofacial surgery is a subspecialty of plastic surgery you don’t often hear much about. What it means is that I spent an additional year after my plastic surgery training focusing just on surgery of the face – not only the soft tissues, but also the jaws and facial skeleton. At Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery, patients will find an extensive array of cosmetic and facial rejuvenation procedures, in addition to complex reconstructive surgery and pediatric plastic surgery, as well as the surgical treatment of chronic headaches 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2015

Dr. Jason Hall and his wife, Amanda Hall, PA-C (migraines), which is something very few surgeons in the country are able to offer. Patients at Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery will discover a level of compassionate care from our experienced and highly skilled team, as well as a personalized level of attention that is tailored to each individual patient. Unlike most plastic surgery practices, I personally perform each and every procedure in my practice. There is no “one size fits all” treatment that works the same for everyone, whether it is an injectable filler, Botox®, or surgery. Each patient’s anatomy is unique, and your results can be enhanced when a procedure is performed by a physician who is highly trained in all aspects of facial anatomy. I am also excited to be using a state-of-theart 3D imaging system (the Canfield Vectra XT) for many of the procedures I perform. This system, which I use in every consultation possible, allows me to view and modify any changes you and I are considering. Whether it is a breast augmentation, a rhinoplasty, or

an injectable procedure, you and I can see in three dimensions what these enhancements will look like before committing to anything. Most of all, my family and I are happy to call East Tennessee home, and we are looking forward to offering patients of the region the state-of-the-art, compassionate care they deserve. Coping With Pet Loss

Life is Precious YEARS AGO

2145 BEALS CHAPEL RD LENOIR CITY, TN 37772

865-986-6325

Memorial Day was known as “Decoration Day,” when the graves of soldiers who lost their lives serving their country were decorated. People now decorate the gravesites of loved ones as well. As a child, I remember visiting the cemeteries of my grandparents back in Iowa. It was then that I gained my insight into death and the afterlife. My grandparents had gone to Heaven. As a child, I experienced the grief and sadness of losing loved ones, including the loss of a pet with who I shared a close bond. When a pet dies, you can experience a significant, even traumatic, loss. But there are healthy ways to cope with the pain and loss and to begin a recovery: » Don’t allow anyone to tell you how to feel. Don’t be embarrassed to feel angry, cry, and shout. Enjoy fond memories of your pet. » Create a legacy with a memorial. Plant a tree or compile a photo album to remember the fun and love you shared with your pet. Your pet would never want you to be sad. » Reach out to others who have lost pets who

will better understand the deep emotions and loss. » Look after yourself. The grief can deplete your energy and emotional reserve. Eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, and exercise regularly. » If you have other pets, maintain your normal routine. Surviving pets also experience the loss of their companion and share your depression. Several of our clients’ pets have entered Rainbow Heaven this past spring. Our deepest sympathy goes out to them. Deep bonds are built with all our guests. We are so lucky we have these fond memories that makes saying goodbye so difficult. Special memories of your pets romping in our backyard during overnight or day camp puts a smile in our hearts.

Business The Value of Double-Checking Your Retirement Strategy MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER Denis Waitley

remarked, “You must stick to Ali your conviction, but be ready Swofford, PhD to abandon your assumptions.” This applies to retirement planning. Here are some signs that you may need to doublecheck your retirement strategy. Your portfolio lacks significant diversification. Many baby boomers are approaching retirement with portfolios heavily weighted in equities. If retirement is near, you might want to consider the length of this bull market and the possibility of irrational exuberance. Few analysts think a “megabear” will follow this historic rally, but even the lesser bear markets since 1929 have brought an average 27.5% reversal for the S&P 500 and lasted an average of 12 months.1 A poor quarter makes you anxious. This is a sign that you may be uncomfortable with the amount of risk in your portfolio. One bad quarter shouldn’t tempt you to abandon a strategy that has worked for years, only to examine it in the face of headwinds. You find yourself listening to friends and pundits. If you’re increasingly interested in the financial opinions of friends, acquaintances, and even total strangers, or the latest market “hot tip,” this hints at anxiety about your financial strategy. You wonder about the demands your lifestyle may make on your finances. You want to travel, golf, and have fun when you retire, and those lifestyle expenses now seem larger than they once were. You see what were once “what-ifs” becoming probabilities. You sense that you might face a serious health issue in the future, or you may end up raising one of your grandchildren. These life events (and others) may influence your financial assumptions. You wonder how inflation will impact your retirement income. Inflation has been mild for the past several years, but what if it spikes? Looking at your retirement strategy anew has merit. Priorities change and needs arise. New questions call for appraisals of old assumptions. Your retirement strategy must suit the objectives you now have before you rather than those you set in your past.

Chew Your Way

to

Health H IPPOCRATES, THE F A T H E R of western

medicine, surmised that all disease had its origin in the digestive tract. That sentiment is still alive today as we are often inundated with information about the effects of what we consume. It is hard to think of a food item that has not been commended or criticized in some way for its effects on health. But possibly just as important as what we eat is how we eat. Our way of eating is vastly different today than it was a few generations ago. Instead of a family meal that was typical in the past, today we often eat alone. Instead of a relaxed atmosphere in which the meal is the focus, today we often eat while performing other tasks, which include working, watching TV, reading, or driving. But perhaps most importantly, instead of slowly and consistently masticating our food, today we gulp down the meal with very little chewing and top it off with some sugary drink to wash it down. This can have detrimental effects on our digestion, and if Hippocrates was right, on our entire health. There are three major types of nutrients that humans consume, which are known as macronutrients. They consist of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, yet their digestion takes place in distinct ways. Protein is mostly digested in the stomach by the secretion of pepsin and hydrochloric acid. Fats are digested after food passes out of the stomach by the secretion of bile from the liver and gall bladder and enzymes from the

pancreas. Carbohydrates, however, depend much more upon our habits for optimum digestion. The amylase found in saliva begins the digestive process for carbs, and the more we chew, the more efficient this process becomes. This is particularly true for the complex carbohydrates in beans and whole grains. You will find that the longer you chew these foods, the sweeter they become as the complex carbohydrates are broken down. Thoroughly chewing beans and grains provides two important advantages. First, carbs that are not properly digested in the mouth can interfere with the digestion of protein and can lead to possible chronic complications. Second, thoroughly mixing beans and grains with saliva has an alkalizing effect on them and makes them a much healthier food overall. In the fast pace of modern life, it can often be exasperating to enjoy a meal peacefully. But if you focus, you will find that you can always chew well regardless of where you are or what you are doing. How much should you chew? At least 40 to 50 times per mouthful is a good rule of thumb. If you chew more, you will notice that your food may become completely liquid by the time you swallow. In this way, you will find it unnecessary to have something to drink while you eat, and digestion will be much smoother if you enjoy liquids after the meal instead of during. Then you may realize the benefits of Hippocrates’ admonition to “drink your food and chew your drink.”

THE HOBBIT AT KNOXVILLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE

KNOXVILLE CHILDREN’S Theatre

will present The Hobbit, a stage adaptation by Patricia Gray of the classic novel by J. R. R. Tolkein. The play will be performed June 5-21 on Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm at Knoxville Children’s Theatre, located at 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville. It’s unusual for a modern work to become a classic so quickly, but Tolkien’s “ring ” stories, which began with The Hobbit, clearly are in this very special category. They stir the imagination and intellect of everyone they touch. Bilbo, one of the most conservative of all Hobbits, is asked to leave his large, roomy, and very dry home in the ground in order to set off as chief robber in an attempt to recover an important treasure. It’s the last thing that any sensitive Hobbit would want to do, but great

benefit eventually results – not only for Bilbo, but for all of the Hobbits who inhabit Middle Earth. KCT is East Tennessee’s leading producer of stage plays for children. The Hobbit is the 68th play to be produced by Knoxville Children’s Theatre. The company is also the area’s leading producer of new works, having produced 27 original plays since 2008. More than 9,500 people attended a KCT play in 2014. The play is performed by 25 talented young actors from ages 8 to 16. Bilbo Baggins will be played by KCT veteran Boone Sommers. Boone was last seen at KCT in a hilarious performance as Pinocchio in Shrek: The Musical Jr. Keegan Stump will portray Gandalf, and two female performers take on the monstrous roles of Smaug (Charlotte Stark) and Gollum (Jaden Lily Branson). Seven actors are making their KCT debut:

P. J. Copeland, Skylar Justice, Simeon Thress, Kennis Van Dyke, Jared Watkins, Madelyn White, and Julia Woods. The rest of the cast includes KCT veteran performers Natalia Adams, Ben Barber, Eason Bullard, Jessica Burks, Brody Copeland, Draven Copeland, Lucas Cunic, Sequoia McCabe, Brock Mullins, Elijah Payne, Eva Rogers, Grant Trivette, Cole Vanwinkle, and Greyson Vanwinkle. The play is directed by Dennis E. Perkins. The stage manager is Kena Holmes, a middle-school student at West Valley. Tickets cost $12. There is a special rate of $10 each for any adult and child entering together. For tickets or more information, call 865-208-3677 or visit www.knoxvillechildrenstheatre.com.

Men Love Spa 9700,Too! LONG CONSIDERED to be a favorite of

women, day spas have become equally popular with men. According to the International Spa Association, nearly one-third of all spa patrons are men. Massages, facials, and nail treatments are becoming just as necessary for men as for women. But women and men look at the spa experience differently.

Dads pampered too! need to be

Once men become “spa goers,” they are much more likely to do so on a regular basis, naming the physical and psychological benefits of spa treatments as being necessary. Men in sales seek manicures for better looking hands, men working in high stress environments look to massage to reduce stress, and men in general are interested in anti-aging facials and ongoing skincare. These are just a few of the now commonplace choices of men. Spa 9700 understands both the differences and similarities of the male/female spa experience. On the Gentlemen’s Menu, you will find services very popular with men like the men’s Organic Sun Damage Facial or the Hot Stone Massage. Jack Black men’s products allow men to have skincare and body care made especially for them. Although Spa 9700 has always offered waxing services for men (i.e. backs, necks, chest, etc.), a recent addition of men’s hair removal without the pain of waxing is expected to be very popular. Spa 9700 also has a custom built hydrotherapy shower featuring an overhead rain shower, 12 body jets, and cold water douse. This shower puts forth 100 gallons of water per minute, a totally relaxing standalone or pre-treatment service. Spa 9700’s private men’s nail room allows both hands and feet to be manicured in private. There are no blow dryers, chemical smells, or other hair salon distractions – just a relaxing and quiet environment perfect for re-charging. Why not give the man in your life the gift of relaxation? Whether he is a spa veteran or it’s his first time, Spa 9700 knows how to make him feel welcome, relaxed, and comfortable. SLIDE THE CITY

June 20 from noon to 5 pm Marry Costa Plaza at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium-Coliseum

E

MBRACE YOUR inner child

and get ready for the slide of your life! Slide the City is bringing the biggest water party of the summer to Knoxville. Grab your swimsuit and speed down this one-of-a-kind 1,000-foot slip and slide. There will be music, dancing, food, drinks, and even some swag for sale so you can soak up the sun in style.

What to expect on your big day

Bikes, bussing, public transportation, and carpooling are encouraged. If you must bring your car, be prepared to walk a short distance from the event. We can’t have cars near the slide now can we? Before you jump on the slide, head to the registration tent to check in and pick up your goodies. Based on what you registered for, you will receive a wristband that gives you access to ride the slide. Hang onto your wristband or you won’t be able to ride! For maximum speed and safety, all sliders must have an inflatable tube to ride. Remember to grab your friends, your swimsuit, and your signed waiver, and you’ll be ready to Slide the City. You’re more than welcome to line up ahead of time, but the water doesn’t start to flow until the specified start time. We accept the last slider in line 30 minutes before the slide closes. The earlier you come, the more you’ll be able to Slide the City. If there is a little rain, it only means there will be more water on the slide and less people cranky about getting squirted with your new water gun. And besides, who wouldn’t want to dance in the rain, slide in the rain, and bring someone to kiss in the rain?

Slide options » Single Slider: You will receive a

wristband that gives you the ability to slide one time anytime during the day and a mouth guard. Remember that we require all participants to slide with an inflatable tube. We will have some sweet ones for sale in case you forget. Open slide time: 30

Walter Trout

F YOU’VE been into the blues for

very long at all, it’s no doubt your attention has been directed to the tremendous work of blues great, Walter Trout. Whether you heard him during his days with Canned Heat, during his tenure with John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, or during his lengthy solo career that continues today, you would be left being blown away by this man’s monster talent. Fans around the world were saddened to hear last year that he was in need of a very expensive liver transplant. Those legions of fans contributed the badly needed funds for that transplant. Walter’s lovely and devoted wife, Marie, kept fans apprised of his progress and kept him informed of the continuous outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and fans. As Walter began to heal and gain strength, he began to make plans to hit the road again. Before he began sharing information about his tour plans for this interview, he talked about his harrowing health experience. “I’m glad to be here,” he said. “It’s been a hell of a year and a half. I’m feeling great. I feel reborn. I have plenty of energy, and I’m putting weight back on. “The last couple tours I’d been getting these incredible cramps in my hands, especially my left hand and forearm. I tried everything – physical therapy, acupuncture, and magnesium. I was going out on stage not knowing if I’d make it through a song. I got to the point where I couldn’t bend strings. If I tried to bend the string, my whole hand cramped. I did the last tour without bending a string. How do you play blues without bending the string? I managed to pull it off by playing a bunch of fast stuff. I had to totally re-think how I play. It turned out it was from my liver, which I didn’t know at the time. Now I’m playing again and don’t get any cramps. I’m strong. I feel great and very, very excited about the future.” I asked the blues great if there has been any change in his playing style as a result of his transplant. “I think I can actually put more meaning into every note,” he said. “I rehearsed with the band recently in my garage. I played a long solo, and I just closed my eyes. Even though it was rehearsal, I just got really into it. At the end, I had a breakdown. I was weeping halfway 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2015

through the song. I put more into it, and I feel it more. I realize how lucky I am to get to do that, because I really didn’t think I’d get to again.” In sharing how the transplant has affected Walter in being able to prepare for the tour, he said, “There’s a little bit of apprehension. I’m going to make my return to the stage on the 15th of June at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It’s a Lead Belly festival, and I’ll be on the bill along with Van Morrison and Eric Burdon.” As we were wrapping up our chat, I asked Walter how he wished to be remembered when he goes to that great blues gig in the sky. “I would hope they would look back and go, ‘He was a dedicated artist who tried to say something with his art. Whether he succeeded or not, that is up to interpretation. That’s a guy who devoted his life to being an artist and was serious about it and also helped a lot of young people get going.’ I have a lot of young guitar players that I mentor, and that means a lot to me. Of course I would want my wife and my kids to look back and say, ‘He was a good husband and a good father.’ That’s incredibly important and probably the most important – three kids! But as far as how the world would see me – a guy who just gave everything he could have to try to be the best artist he could be.” When asked if there was anything he would change about that answer, he said, “I couldn’t

say that any better. I would also like to be remembered as a man who was devoted to his family. One who realized that the art is ultimately important, and the family is ultimately important. Those are the two things that keep me going in my life. My family is the most important.” You can read the extended version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com. Photos by Jeff Katz

With Smart Strategies, You Can Retire Early ARE YOU LOOKIN G forward to the

day when you can permanently turn off your alarm clock? Or perhaps finally tell the boss what you really think? That day can be sooner, rather than later, and here are some ways I help my clients achieve that goal: Yvonne Marsh, CPA » Make a plan to have your house paid off. You need a lot less savings in your retirement account if you don’t have a big mortgage to pay each month. » Budget for health insurance in the gap between the end of your employer plan and the beginning of Medicare at age 65. Use the healthcare exchange to estimate how much an individual policy will cost, and make sure you understand the true cost of Medicare once it begins. » If you are married, create a Social Security claiming strategy that will allow you to take one SS benefit at age 62 (or age 60 if widowed), while allowing the second SS benefit to continue to grow. I have powerful software that identifies that strategy. » Have an after-tax emergency fund available so every time you need a new water heater or car repair, you don’t create taxable income dipping into your 401k or IRA. » Segregate your investments into time horizons. More conservatively invest the portion of assets earmarked for phase one of your retirement years, while using more of a growth focus for the phase two and beyond assets. » Take advantage of the recent DOL and IRS rulings that allow you to segregate up to $125,000 of your retirement accounts into a Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract. The IRS allows you to delay your required distributions, so you may be able to use this investment for phase two income and create guaranteed lifetime income for you and your spouse in your later years. Join us at our next Lunch ‘n Learn if you would like more details on these strategies and others, or call today for a complimentary one-hour meeting to learn more about how you can retire early.

Buy New or Redo? GROWING UP with a DIY dad has given

me an affinity for anything renovation. As I’ve gotten older and spent more time delving into the wonderful world of design, a battle has emerged between the transformation of the old and the appeal of the new. To many people, both options are appealing for a variety of reasons, but how can you decide if you need to buy new or redo? Like with every decision, it is important to evaluate your priorities and look at the pros and cons of both sides. If you currently own a home and are craving some change, there are some major questions to ask yourself before packing your bags: » Do you love the area you live in? » Do you get along well with your neighbors? » Are you close to great schools? » How’s your commute to work? » And the big one: COST. There are hidden costs when buying a home: Closing costs, home inspection, surveying, taxes, escrow, appraisal, realtor fees, HOA fees, and more. When renovating a home, YOU choose your budget. When

getting stronger, and the days are getting longer, and with it will come the endless ways available to have fun right in your own backyard. Are you really enjoying your outdoor spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space doesn’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, decorative lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners away from their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to this dilemma by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evenings. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about all of your retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Luxury Home Marketing Formula

Y

OU OWN a

luxury home and you’re ready to sell, but who can you trust to market your unique home? It’s important you find an agent who is going to advertise your luxury home to qualified buyers – someone who can reach a buyer across town or across the world. Agents who a re fe a t u re d i n Homes & Land have access to a special luxury home marketing formula, which is proven to get your home in front of qualified prospects locally, as well as internationally. How does it work? When a real estate agent in Homes & Land features your home in the magazine, it gets direct mailed to the most active luxury home shoppers in the area: luxury home sellers. This local seller is going to receive a copy of Homes & Land each month. According to the National Association of REALTORs, 80% of these sellers are going to buy another home in the same area. Homes & Land then syndicates high-end properties to the best luxury websites in the industry. These sites include The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), The New York Times (NYT), Robb Report, and duPont Registry. Internationally, your home will be featured on the websites of WSJ in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, as well as the International NYT and MANSION GLOBAL available in Chinese and Spanish. They’re also syndicated to the top real estate portals like Zillow, Trulia, Yahoo, and others. Some sites have minimum price qualifications, so it’s best to talk to an agent inside Homes & Land for all the details. UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

HOSTA

H

OSTAS ARE OFTEN touted

as the best shade-loving perennial plants for the garden, and rightfully so. They are easy to grow, fairly pest free, and offer a wide range of colorful and beautiful foliage, flowers, and forms. It’s no surprise that they are the number one shade perennial sold in the United States. The Hosta genus has around 45 different species and an estimated 5,000 different cultivars! Hostas vary from tiny plants just a few inches in size to massive four-foot clumps with heart-shape leaves almost two feet long. Leaves can be puckered, wavy-edged, green, variegated – the variations are practically endless. Blooms include white or purplishlavender bell-shaped flowers that appear in summer. Some are intensely fragrant. With so many choices, there is a hosta for almost every use, from containers and edging to groundcover and background and specimen plantings. Hostas are effective companions along other shade-tolerant perennials, including many wild flowers. They also pair well with shrubs like azalea, rhododendron, and hydrangea and grow well under deep-rooted deciduous trees such as oak, ginkgo, dogwood, and Japanese maple. Hostas thrive in a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A great way to continually enrich the soil around hostas is to use well-decomposed compost as mulch. Apply a two to three inch layer of compost each spring. Water plants during the summer if rainfall is less than one inch per week. To bolster their growth, apply a fertilizer labeled for use on herbaceous perennials and follow label directions. Slugs are the most common pest of hosta. They feed at night, leaving small holes in the foliage. Commercial slug baits and sprays are available. The disease crown rot, sometimes called southern blight, is caused by several soil-borne fungi. Having a well-drained soil and not mulching right up around the crown of the plant are good strategies to prevent this disease. It’s best to remove and discard any diseased plants. If you are a real hosta enthusiast, explore Photo by S. Hamilton, courtesy UTIA

Sinking Slabs Got You

I

F YOU have been a victim of sinking concrete surfaces in your driveway, sidewalk, porch, or pool deck, you are not alone. Due to the clay-based soil found here in East Tennessee, it is common for soils to shrink from changes in air temperature as well as from rainfall or high humidity. While settling is a normal process for concrete slabs, costly problems can occur when there is uneven settling. Left untouched, these problems can worsen and result in concrete slab replacement. When it comes to your uneven driveway, sidewalk, porch, or pool deck, you should always request polyurethane injection as your preferred concrete lifting option. Due to its ability to expand over 15 times its size, relatively light weight material of only 2 to 6 pounds per cubic-foot, and compressive strength of over 10,000 pounds, polyurethane injection is the best solution compared to

Down? traditional concrete lifting and leveling methods. From an aesthetic point of view, polyurethane injection requires less drilling in your concrete surface, as well as a more accurate lift compared to other repair options. Why replace your uneven concrete surface when you can repair it for less money and hassle? The answer: You shouldn’t, because you don’t have to. At the end of the day, polyurethane injection is the environmentally friendly, clean, efficient, long lasting and economical alternative to traditional concrete repair options both inside the home and out. Josh Smith, owner of Master Dry, realizes that this is a common headache for homeowners in our area. As a result, a new division has been founded, Master Concrete Lifting. This new division is focused solely on eliminating these concerns for homeowners in the community. Josh believes that he provides the best

Planning Your Outdoor Spaces WITH SO MANY of today’s new homes

being built to incorporate gorgeous patio spaces, doesn’t it stand to reason that with a little thought and pre-planning, these spaces can become an exciting extension of your home’s indoor space? So where do you begin, and how do you master the design of flowing your indoor and outdoor spaces together? Here are a few things to take into consideration before creating the outdoor space of your dreams!

It all starts with a plan!

It’s generally a good idea to begin this process by first taking into consideration all the possible events your family will want to plan for when they use your new outdoor haven. Large gatherings and family events will call for one type of plan, and, conversely, an outdoor space designed for two to relax and unwind will dictate a totally different set of priorities. As you consider all the activities you want to accommodate in your new outdoor space, you might consider creating specific spaces for specific events. Activities such as outdoor cooking on a grill or customized outdoor kitchen might be best suited in one area, dining in another. Just as on the inside

of your home, area rugs are a great way to help separate and define spaces. Today’s selection of outdoor area rugs is wide and varied – in many shapes, sizes, and colors! Secondly, creating the right landscape plan to surround your outdoor space is extremely important. Shrubbery, flowers, and architectural accents will all play an important part in the overall design as you finalize your landscape plan. You’ll find that stonework and carpentry choices will be critical components to aid you in creating your perfect outdoor retreat. Why not give special consideration to the plants you choose to surround your space? Just think of the deliciousscentsyoucould add to your outdoor space with the right plantings! The sooner you start planning, the sooner you’ll be relaxing and enjoying your newly created outdoor space! Sandy’s work has been featured in Canadian House & Home, and she recently won a People’s Choice award for her designs.

June in the Garden T

HIS HAS BEEN one of the most

frustrating, patience testing springs I can remember. Our pottery was stuck in the west coast port slowdown, plants froze on trailers stuck in snowstorms, our roses suffered chemical burns at the growers and were delayed a month, and road construction that was supposed to be completed in March is still going on. It was a Murphy’s Law spring, so I am hoping for an easy, mild summer! Enough whining. How are things in your yard? Have you done a walk-about recently? If not, please go out right now and check your plants, because I am already seeing lots of problems. We are averaging about five customers each day walking in with baggies of sick or infested leaves. Here is what I am seeing the most of: 1. Scale on hollies. There are white, rectangular shapes on the bottom of the leaves, and the top of the leaves are covered with a black mold called “sooty mold.” These are insects that create a shell over themselves that is impervious to spray insecticides. The mold is on the “honeydew” that they secrete. Cut off the severely

affected branches (if possible) and dispose of them. Treat the plant with a systemic insecticide that kills scale, and blast the shrub with a hose several times a week to remove the mold and carcasses. Neem oil is an organic treatment but will take repeated applications. 2. Caterpillars on roses. There is a tiny little green worm that devours your roses overnight. It is the same color as the leaves and very hard to find, but I promise it is there. It is actually the larvae of a sawfly, and it doesn’t stay around very long, but it can sure do a lot of damage! Treat your shrubs with Bayer Rose and Flower Care, and you will stop the larvae and have a head start on Japanese Beetles. 3. Black spot, rust, and other fungal diseases on roses, hydrangeas, and just about everything else! The cool, wet weather in the spring was a fungal breeding paradise. Susceptible plants should be treated with a systemic product. Small outbreaks can be treated with Copper Soap. 4. Sunburn! Yes, plants can sunburn, too. It was a cloudy, cool, wet spring, and then the sun came out and the temperature

soared. Plants cannot adapt ove r n i g ht to that change, so some scorched. They will push those old leaves off and grow new ones, so there is no need to treat. Just baby them along a little while. Talking about the wet spring reminded me to remind you to check your watering. Many plants that were installed in the fall did not need to put out many roots, because the soil was wet from all the rain. As a consequence, they have not developed adequate root systems to withstand the summer heat. For those and other relatively new plants, you will need to water weekly. No, not with a sprinkler! For the 1000th time, sprinklers are for grass and flowers not trees and shrubs. Those will need drip lines or hand watering. Put a tuna or cat food can beside your shrub, and if it doesn’t fill during the course of a week, water your plants. You can also plant “sentinel plants” that tell you if the ground is dry. I use my hydrangeas, because they practically swoon when they want water. You can still plant things now. Our spring ran two to three weeks behind with the ground staying cool for much later than normal. Even trees and shrubs can still be planted as long as you are prepared to water them all summer. I also tuck in perennials that are blooming as the summer goes along so I will always have something colorful in my yard. Some annuals are already in need of a haircut. If your plants are leggy, cut them back and fertilize them. Deadheading is also important to encourage re-blooming. Don’t forget to check down in the middle of containers or beds and remove any leaf and bloom debris that collects there, because that will set up a breeding ground for disease and insects. Monitor your veggie gardens every day for signs of insects or disease. Putting down three layers of newspaper and then covering that with mulch will help you by holding soil temps and moisture levels down, preventing weeds, and slowing insect growth. You can also plant new plants to continue your harvest. That’s all for this month. We will continue to get new plants and products in throughout the summer, so stop in and see us often!

Don’t Just Clean for Looks .... Clean for Safety! SIX WEEKS AGO a friend of mine walked through her kitchen, slipped and fell as she broke her ankle. In the same month, my son-in-law, Tony, was dining at a local restaurant on their patio. As he finished, he made his way to a garbage receptacle, when he slipped and tore his meniscus. Both injuries require surgeries to repair, and sadly, both injuries could have been prevented. Millions of people slip and fall each year in America. The catalyst is often greasy residue, chemical build-up, or debris that has become engrained within the floor. Often the floor looks clean, so when the unsuspecting victim lands on their back, they are truly stunned! Over time your tile and grout, concrete, and natural stone floors pick up impurities from the environment. You can mop your floor a hundred times, but tiny particles of dirt, grime, and cleaning chemicals build up within your floors, making them hazardous to everyone that walks on them. The longer

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

it has gone since a “deep cleaning,” the more hazardous it becomes. Add a couple of food spills and your kitchen floor can become the most dangerous place in your home. Even the cleaning solutions used to clean can build up within the pores of your floor and cause accidents. Most restaurants clean their floors every single day. Many hire outside cleaning crews, hoping that the “professionals” can do a better job than employees. And yet, slip and fall accidents are the greatest source of general liability claims within the industry and the leading cause of death. Why? The problem lies within the method of the cleaning. A mop and squeegee can only clean the surface of the floor. The real problem lies below the surface. The only way to improve the safety of your floor is to remove ALL foreign debris throughout the floor. This includes what is likely trapped beneath the surface. Surface Doc’s patented technology is now

countertops

considered the best method for cleaning CO-OWNER nearly all hard surJohn faces. After using an Fitzwilliam emulsifier to start the soil break-down process, they then use a combination of extreme heat and pressure to open the pores of the floor and to remove all foreign matter throughout the material. Without this method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer of the flooring system. With 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of the pores of your hard surfaces and is taken away immediately. Surface Doc has set the industry standard for cleaning, and they will not only make your floors sparkle again, but they will make them safer, too!

Is Mold Contributing to Your Health Problems?

A

Knoxville is the # 3 city for allergies in the U.S.

F T E R E X P E RIE N CIN G two

p u l m o n a r y e m b o l i s m s , Te r r y ’s physician began inquiring as to possible causes, including the possible exposure to mold or other bio hazard. After discussing his health problems with neighbors, who themselves had only recently experienced mold related issues in their own home, Terry mentioned the water problems he had just discovered in his home’s crawlspace. It was then that his neighbors recommended that he call Mold Drs. USA, the same company they had used to remediate their home’s water and mold issues. After a thorough inspection of his home, a one-story home on an elevated crawlspace, we determined that a plumbing leak was resulting in standing sewage on the vapor barrier in the crawlspace. As the water/sewage in the soil evaporated, the elevated humidity caused condensation to form on the home’s floor joists, sub-flooring, and floor insulation. Over time, these moisture rich surfaces provided the perfect breeding ground for the mold that resulted. These high humidity levels in basements and crawlspaces should be a warning for every homeowner wishing to prevent the formation of harmful mold and mildew in their homes. One thing we know for a fact is that mold and mildew, when provided a high moisture content environment, can contribute to a wide variety of health issues in some individuals. We also know that the only solution is the proper remediation of this mold and mildew. The biggest frustration for homeowners, however, is the selection of a mold remediation specialist, because this industry is unregulated in Tennessee. As the only ACAC (ACAC.org) certified mold remediation specialists in Knoxville and surrounding counties, we encourage you to contact Mold Drs. USA at 865-945-3000 for a free, no-obligation consultation should you suspect that you have mold or mildew in your home that might be the source of health problems that you or a loved one might be experiencing. Even a Teaspoon of Water…

…CAN BE ENOUGH to help facilitate the bees fleas,

breeding of mosquitoes. They bite, make you itch, and can be aggravating pests! One of the best reasons for getting rid of mosquitoes is to help protect yourself from exposure to the dangerous West Nile virus. This is a serious health concern, and it’s better to be pro-active than re-active! A mosquito’s entire lifecycle is completed in seven days to several weeks depending on environmental conditions. Standing, stagnant water ... such as in bird baths, kiddie pools, flowerpots, or boat covers ... helps expedite their lifecycle. The female mosquito lays 30-150 eggs every two to three days, nourishing these eggs with blood she sucks out of people like you! Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program kills existing mosquitoes and prevents many of the mosquito eggs from becoming biting adults. Treatment is recommended monthly through October and is a process that involves killing both existing mosquitoes and the earlier stages of a mosquito (eggs, larva, and pupa), which are the aquatic stages of the lifecycle. New users of the Mosquito Control Management Program will receive $25 OFF their initial treatment with a contract through October. Other services provided by Dayton’s include quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/quarterly/onetime pest control services, pest control for ants/ fleas/carpenter bees/bedbugs, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation.

Trusted Partner of The Home Depot Debunks the Four Myths of Hardwood Floor Renewal N-Hance Wood Renewal Reveals How to Get Hardwood Flooring to Look Like New Again

WITH SUMMER

officially in full swing, now is the perfect time to learn about the refuted myths surrounding hardwood floor refinishing. It’s hard to stay on top of the do’s and don’ts of caring for hardwood floors. Whether new or an expert to hardwood floor refinishing, the task may seem daunting. N-Hance Wood Renewal of Knoxville, a local company that specializes in the renewal of hardwood floors and kitchen cabinets, has set out to help educate consumers on the “four myths” of hardwood floor refinishing and how to complete the task. “Hardwood f loors are the most visual part of a home, and when they look shabby, it tends to make the entire house look shabby,” said Carleen Head, owner of N-Hance Wood Renewal of Knoxville. “If done properly, having hardwood floors refinished can not only increase the aesthetic appeal of a home, but it can add value to the property.” The following are the typical myths that experts at N-Hance Wood Renewal will help

56

clarify and adjust to assist in keeping hardwood floors in their best condition: » Myth 1: Homeowners think they can do it themselves. Homeowners will not be able to find the same quality tools and solutions that professional flooring contractors have at their disposal. Even if they do manage to get a hold of such equipment, that is only half the battle won. Consumers still need the knowhow of using the equipment properly, and this will only come with experience. » Myth 2: Prefinished flooring means consumers will get a harder finish. Many people believe that prefinished flooring comes with harder finishes than finishes that are applied on-site. While this may be true in some cases, it is not necessarily always a good thing. There are many hardwood floor specialists that employ a much higher quality finishing process than you get from some manufacturers. » Myth 3: High-quality finishes don’t scratch. This myth is propagated by sly mar-

keters. The truth is that no matter how strong the finish, if a sharp metal tip gets dragged across a floor surface, there will be scratch damage. Don’t think that a hardwood floor refinish will solidify and automatically protect f loors against scratches and similar damages. » Myth 4: An oil-based finish is more durable than water-based finishes. This is not true. This may have been true in the distant past, but technology has made leaps and bounds throughout the years. Water finishes now far surpass basic oil modified polyurethanes with regards to wear resistance and offer fantastic protection for hardwood floors. A Level of Clean That is Nothing to Sneeze At WINTER’S SNOW and ice seem a distant memory, and we’ll need to wait an entire year for the next dogwood blooms to herald in spring. Remember those precious few weeks when we opened up our windows to allow those mild spring breezes to freshen up our homes? Well, all too quickly the temperatures have risen, our windows are once again closed, and the air conditioners are turned back on.

WWW.SUPERIOROFKNOXVILLE.COM One challenge many of us experience during those periods of time when our homes are “buttoned up” is that dust and allergens are trapped inside. Your home’s HVAC and ceiling fans redistribute these contaminants throughout the entire house, as is evident by the dust on your furniture. No amount of dusting seems to alleviate the sneezing and coughing by family members that result. While there is no way to totally eliminate dust and allergens in your home, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce these airborne contaminants. One sure fire way is to remove dust and allergens from your home’s carpeting and Oriental rugs. While vacuuming helps, your vacuum only removes a small portion of the accumulated contaminants that are trapped deep in the fibers of your carpets and rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we offer homeowners two proven solutions to dust and allergens. For your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting, we offer a deep cleaning and extraction process that thoroughly cleans your carpets using only specially treated water from our truck-mounted cleaning plant that assures a level of clean that leaves our competition in the dust. For your home’s Oriental rugs, we offer our proprietary 11-step rug washing process at our state-of-the-art facility that achieves a level of clean that is simply not achievable any other way. Call us today, and discover for yourself a Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning level of clean – a level of clean that is nothing to sneeze at.

Exotic Summer Vacations That Are a Steal Due to the Strong Dollar

XOTIC LOCATIONS like Bali, Rome,

and Sydney might be at the top of your bucket list, but this year experts say they should also be at the top of your summer vacation list. Today’s unusually strong dollar is allowing you to get a lot more for your money when you travel abroad. Travel experts say this year is one of the best times in modern history for Americans to explore the world and visit distant dream destinations. The U.S. has emerged from the financial crisis of 2008 with the dollar at near record highs relative to a number of international currencies. For American travelers, this means international travel is cheaper this year than it has been in decades. Hotel prices in the world’s most expensive destinations, like Sydney and Paris, are running well below their domestic counterparts here in the states. Here are five amazing vacation destinations that are attractively priced right now given the strong dollar.

BALI

Bali is home to beautiful beaches and unique spots like the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Seeing these amazing locations has never been more affordable. Island lovers can now save 50-60% over last year’s hotel prices in Bali. As an example, last year the Bali Wood Property at Aston Kuta Residence was going for $206 per night, and now it’s practically a steal at just $82 per night.

SPAIN

The dollar’s strength translates into great deals across Spain, the perfect destination for people who love to experience local culture. Take in all the sites, like La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, while saving on hotels in Barcelona. You can also travel south to the municipality of Marbella, home to some of the most serene beaches in the world. You can find amazing deals with some properties in Marbella going for as much as 41% less than they cost just one year ago.

PARIS

One of the most expensive cities in the world isn’t as steep as it used to be. For example, the four star Hotel Astra Opera–Astotel, which went for $249 last year, is currently listed at $149. You can even book luxury hotels in Paris for up to 65% less per night than last year. The famous L’Hotel Paris, which travelers last summer booked for $832 per night, can now be booked for just $298. With places like the Louvre Museum and the Jardin des Tuileries in its back pocket, it should come as no surprise that Paris ranks highly among art and design lovers. The current low hotel room rates in Paris mean you can afford to wine and dine yourself at luxury restaurant hot spots like L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon during your stay.

ROME

A popular destination for foodies and home to the Vatican, Rome’s appeal to tourists is universal. Staying in the city is now more affordable than ever. Rome’s current hotel room rates are up to 66% lower than last year’s prices. These savings mean you can extend your vacation and get even more scoops o f g e l a t o i n R o m e ’s stunning Centro Storico neighborhood.

SYDNEY

Australia is a dream destination for adventurers. You can take three different climbs up to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for breathtaking views of the city and the Blue Mountains make for an amazing day trip. Normally Sydney’s sky-high costs make it a tough sell for most Americans, but today’s exchange rates mean this summer is a great time to head down under. Dozens of four star hotels, including The Menzies Sydney, Castlereagh Boutique Hotel, and Mercure Sydney, are now going for less than $120 per night. Even five star hotels, like the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Sydney, that were going for $300 per night last summer are now going for $185 per night, which represents a 38% savings. While travel deals are red hot, it still pays to shop around for the best deals. Now is the perfect time to visit international destinations you’ve always dreamed of. Get inspired and find more perfect places to stay, eat, and play around the world and in your own backyard.

History

BY RAY SMITH, HISTORIAN AND EAST TENNESSEE PRESERVATION ALLIANCE BOARD MEMBER

Update on the Guest House at the Alexander Inn

R

ICK DOVER is the founder

and general manager of the Family Pride Corporation, which is now known as Dover Development Corporation. Rick is a good friend who has been most accommodating when I have asked him for tours of the construction site of the Guest House at the Alexander Inn in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Rick and his company are also good friends to historical structures. Here is their mission statement: “Dover Development’s niche is unique – we believe that no one else does quite what we do. We restore or renovate neglected properties, including ambitious historical projects, with environmental stewardship as our top priority. We then turn most of those properties into affordable senior housing, with an emphasis on care for Alzheimer’s and other memory problems.” The iconic Oak Ridge historic inn, known in the Manhattan Project era simply as the “Guest House” and which later became the Alexander Inn, is now getting a major renovation. Rick Dover is converting the historic Guest House/Alexander Inn into an assisted living and retirement facility while preserving the old hotel’s classic architecture and interior gathering places during rebuilding. The main entrance and lobby will house a small museum, and the walls will be decorated with original historic images made by famous Manhattan Project photographer, Ed Westcott. There will be a “history wall” that will feature many of Ed’s most recognizable images. The museum in the lobby may well become a main stop on the tours to be included as a part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. This effort began when Patrick McIntyre, the Tennessee State Historic Preservation Officer, suggested to the local Department of Energy office that a substitution of one historic property’s preservation could be done when another property could not be preserved as desired. This allowed the stabilization of the significantly deteriorated Guest House/Alexander Inn. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance was able to assist the local DOE by connecting with Rick Dover, who had experience in just this type of renovation of historic structures. He had turned several old buildings into productive senior living centers while maintaining the historical characteristics of the structures. The purchase and stabilization of the building allowed it to be sold to Rick. Because of that initial influx of $500,000 and some flexibility by the city of Oak Ridge regarding taxes by granting a 90% reduction for 10 years and the Dover Development 60

Corporation’s tenacious approach to authenticity while understanding the need for modern amenities for the guests, the project is well on its way to a very satisfactory completion. The total investment is now $8,000,000! We Oak Ridgers are proud as punch to see the fabled old inn preserved, and many of the elderly who are signing up to live there are longtime Oak Ridgers themselves. We appreciate Rick for his inspiring vision and his willingness to take the necessary risks to undertake such an enormous task as saving what is undoubtedly one of the most historic and storied structures in Oak Ridge. The Guest House at the Alexander Inn is an iconic project that has fulfilled a dream for Rick. He knew of the plight of the Alexander Inn and had wanted to buy and restore it for at least 10 years. However, the owner’s asking price was always too high. Eventually things fell into place, and Rick did get the building and has led the restoration. Some 20 years ago, when his grandfather needed special care and Rick was not able to find it, he became interested in restoring old buildings, “because they tell us who we are and where we are going as a community,” and in turning these buildings into assisted living facilities. His grandfather was among his first guests in a restored building that had been converted into a senior living center. The building that is now the Guest House at the Alexander Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. All restoration work has been done with the express intent to restore the exterior appearance to that of the authentic early Guest House. Rick’s visit to the architecture firm that designed the Alexander Inn, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago, produced an exciting find. He found the original design drawings signed by John Merrill in 1942.

“I just about fell over,” said Rick. “This had to be the smallest building that John Merrill and his firm ever designed.” This experience was truly amazing for Rick. Only someone with a strong penchant for restoring historical buildings would go to the trouble to travel to the office of the original design firm just to see if he could find the original drawings. That is what he is using as a guide in the restoration. Authentic is the word to describe Rick’s goal, and I think he is doing an amazing job of doing just that. You will agree when you see the finished product. Senior Solutions Management Group is managing the senior living center. Their website provides the details regarding how to become a resident: www.ssmgrp.com/ guest-house-alexander-inn-senior-livingoak-ridge-tennessee. Plans now call for the Guest House at the Alexander Inn to open in early June. The final interior trim, fixtures, and flooring are going in at present. There will be 64 apartments in the facility. Deposits are being taken now, and tours can be arranged by appointment. For information, call Christina Trentham at 865-293-6563.

Jennifer Williams J

ENNIFER WILLIAMS’ philosophy

of teaching stems from the lessons her mother taught her when she was growing up: Never stop learning. That philosophy has paid off, as Jennifer has been named Knox County Schools’ High School Teacher of the Year. “It is a very humbling honor,” she said. “There are so many excellent and distinguished teachers in Knox County, and I truly appreciate the recognition by my district. On a personal level, it represents all of the hard work I have put into the last 16 years of teaching. We don’t get many accolades in this profession, and that’s why this one means so much.” Jennifer has been teaching English at Gibbs High School for 11 years. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Like most teachers, Jennifer’s days are extremely busy. “The day starts with a quick tidying up of the classroom,” said Jennifer. “I like for everything to be in place and ready for the students. I make sure that the board has the date

The 10-minute breaks between classes are often taken with students coming by to ask questions or discuss SGA events or simply with the need to talk. I’m constantly on the go! In the classroom, it is a mix of different teaching strategies to keep the students engaged for the full 90-minute block.” Jennifer says the biggest challenges she faces as a teacher stem from student apathy and increasing mandates from the government. “Too many mandates are asked of teachers, and the instructional time is beginning to suffer,” she said. “Another challenge is changing the way teachers are presented in the media. Teaching is an honorable profession, but very few news stories showcase the good stories over the ones about testing,

The invisible light bulb goes off, and it is evident that learning has occurred! I love showing the relevance of what I’m teaching to my students. I love hearing their ideas and opinions on what we are doing in the classroom. I love helping them write better. I love making my students aware of all that they can be!”

Advertising Your Way Right Out of Business N

O AM O UNT of advertising

can outperform a well-thought out marketing strategy. I consistently observe companies throwing money at just about every advertising platform available without achieving the results or return on investment they had hoped for. They resemble sort of an “idea of the month” club with no long-term marketing strategy. Fortunately, this mistake can be corrected by, yes, implementing a well-thought out marketing strategy. And you’ll no doubt enjoy the savings that will result when your money stops chasing every advertising opportunity that presents itself. One common error that I have observed even more recently is the total reliance that some small businesses, particularly start-ups, place on social media. One common error that I have observed even more recently is the total reliance that some small businesses, particularly start-ups, place on social media. marketing strategy. But to place your entire success on this single platform is a recipe for disaster. I know there are exceptions, but that’s all they are – exceptions. There’s much more to the story, however, than the belief, or should we call it hope, that social media is the secret sauce to your ultimate success in business. Remember, hope is not a strategy.

Business

When you drill down on just why small businesses, especially new businesses, place all of their chips on this single platform strategy, I find that it’s primarily financial in nature. The lack of capital needed to pursue other critical advertising platforms often forces entrepreneurs to hope against all the odds that social media can come to the rescue and get the job done. Social media can and likely will play an important role in your well-thought out marketing strategy. But the likelihood that you will succeed entirely from your social media marketing efforts is a long shot at best. Is it possible to advertise yourself right out of business? Sadly, the answer is yes.

The Realty of Reality TV R ECENTLY I ATTENDED a

luncheon with a few hundred business people. The main attraction of the gathering was a speaker who stood at the podium to share her life story. Without shame, she shared with transparency. She didn’t tone down her mistakes nor did she shy away from personal decisions she’d made that had wreaked havoc in her life, as well as those she cared most about. For the 20 minutes she spoke, she smiled as if to serve proudly as a shining example. There is hope no matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done. As she intertwined her business life with her personal one, it was evident she had learned the two could not be separated. Decisions in one area had a cause and effect in the other. Yet as she shared, we heard how success had found its way into her messy life. Her newfound happiness was evident in her confident disposition. She had learned enough from her mistakes to share such lessons for the benefit of others. As the audience listened, you could have heard a pin drop. Authenticity: We find little of it in a

world where imagery has become the new currency. How you look seems to take precedence over where you’ve been. What you do is more important than who you are. And, sadly, often what is “posted” becomes the standard by which we must live by. Popularity for reality television is at an all-time high. Many channels have their own titles, ranging from swamps and food to surgery and many topics in between. Seems there are few limits to what becomes feature programming that invites others to tune in to the life of another. Yet many appear to be scripted and so far fetched that an assumption can often be made that there seems to be little reality in reality TV. Such as life. We’ve all made mistakes. Many of us have wreaked our own havoc like our speaker had done. Yet her purpose was clear – to offer hope, encourage, and serve as an example that it’s not so much about where you’ve been but where you are going. The extended standing ovation she received at the end of her presentation was evidence that one thing we long for more of in our culture of perfectionism – reality in life.

There is nothing like a great story. What is yours? Why watch reality TV when you write your own script every day? Real people. True friends. Authentic relationships. The ability to speak of mistakes without feeling like an outcast. The freedom to learn from others and seek renewal. Surely our speaker had pain as the result of some of her decisions. It took courage to share what she did, yet she was unashamed. Many left having been deeply moved by her story. Reality TV? Yes! It happens every day. On the channel we call life. In the places we call home and work. What do we learn from such stories? Let’s get real. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Signs Your Teen May Be in Trouble SOMETIMES IT’S OBVIOUS

if your teen is in trouble. Household life generally takes a nose dive. There’s tension in the home. Deception, outbursts, and an overall bad attitude may resonate from your child. There may also be outside issues such as problems with school, peers, or even the police. But sometimes the signs of a troubled teen aren’t so obvious. You can’t always tell in advance when your child is having problems, yet there are often clues that all is not well. The older your child gets, watch for the following signs, which may indicate depression, self-abusive behavior, or serious trouble. School Changes Most teens have a groove when it comes to school. They’ll excel, get along fine, or just get by. Whatever the pattern, if it changes, ask what’s going on. There may be something at school that’s troubling your teen, or something outside of school (such as family or health issues) may be impacting your child’s normal pattern. If you discover your teen has missed school without you knowing, investigate what he was doing. Staying at home may be a sign of depression or that he’s hiding from a

situation. If he was hanging out with friends, it could mean your teen is involved with the wrong crowd. If he was alone with a new romantic interest, your teen may be sexually active. Changes in Peers Most all kids play around with their identity when they enter adolescence and the teen years. It’s also ok to make new friends. But if your teen has lost contact with all his old friends, has no friends, or suddenly has a new best friend and no time for anyone else, don’t jump to conclusions, but do check it out. Touch base with your teen and see what’s up. Everything may be fine. However, if your teen’s old friends don’t want to be around him anymore, his behavior is different from the norm, and/or he is also having changes in his school groove, trouble could be brewing. Go With Your Instincts Parents can generally sense when something isn’t right with their child. You may not know what’s bugging him, but you know that his behavior is different and goes beyond the normal changes of adolescence. If your child seems to treat you different and is more negative toward you, keep in mind that children

and teens often perceive mom and dad as an extension of themselves. This means if they feel bad about themselves, they ’ll often treat you badly. No matter how your teen behaves, treat him as you’d like to be treated. Approach your children with love and respect, and they’ll sense the care and concern you have – whether they outwardly seem to appreciate it or not. Teens have a strong desire to be respected and treated as individuals. By approaching your child this way, many problems can be uncovered and resolved within the family. If you discover issues that are beyond your ability to help your teen fix or cope with, enlist the help of important adults in the child’s life such as coaches, teachers, the clergy, or seek help and guidance from outside resources. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Her work can be found in various print markets, as well as online. She has been writing for Everything Knoxville since its start-up in 2007.

Dining Etiquette Tips E

VERY NOW AND THEN it’s

a good idea to brush up on our dining etiquette skills to make sure we’re sending the right messages when dining with others. Remember that table manners are not just about which fork to eat with, but they have more to do with the idea that the way we eat sends unspoken messages to the people we’re dining with that we either value their dining experience (and, in turn, them) or we don’t. That’s why it matters. It’s always going to be about helping those around us feel comfortable and valued. Often I hear parents say things like, “Does it really matter if my kids know which side of the plate the fork goes on?” My answer, “Yes, absolutely it matters.” Why? Because not knowing sets our children up for embarrassing moments, uncomfortable situations, and an overall feeling of awkwardness and lack of self-confidence. Do we really want that for our

66

children? I hope not. With that said, here are a few reminders: » Create a story, riddle, song, or whatever it takes, but memorize a proper table setting. This way you’ll never accidentally take your neighbor’s fork or glass because you don’t know which side yours is on. » Once you touch your napkin or utensils, they are never to touch the table again. That’s why your napkin remains in your lap until everyone is exiting the table, and that’s why your utensils remain on your plate at all times once they have been touched. » Your posture at the table speaks volumes about how you feel about the meal, the company, and your overall mood. Send the message of happiness, confidence, and interest by sitting with your back straight, never leaning over towards your plate. » A lady and a gentleman never lick anything at the table. You do not lick your fingers, plates,

bowls, utensils, etc. » A lady and a gentleman are extremely careful to never make any type of noise when dining. » A lady and a gentleman know that it’s not polite to look “over eager” to eat. Remember that you sit down to dine for dual purposes – to reconnect with the people you love or to do business in addition to filling your stomach. Remember to use restraint while dining. These are just some fun reminders that I hope will help your next dining experience be more enjoyable.

Approximately 40% of people in the U.S. between the ages of 26-40 have at least one tattoo. However, the incidence of tattoo regret has also increased. A recent poll suggests that about 20% of individuals regret getting a tattoo. Fortunately, for those who rue their tattoo, the practice of tattoo removal has just recently taken a gigantic revolutionary step. Before lasers were used, people desiring to have their tattoos removed suffered through various procedures such as acid treatments, dermabrasion, salabrasion, and non-selective laser ablation. These procedures frequently resulted in significant scarring and left open the opportunity for serious infection. Surgical excision and subsequent skin grafting, while effective, also caused disfigurement. For decades, Charlatans have been hawking tattoo removal creams. At best, these creams are ineffective. At worst, they are expensive and can cause noticeable scarring. In the 1990s, physicians began employing Q-switched lasers to treat unwanted tattoos. While fairly effective, these lasers generally require at least 12 treatments and often as many as 18 or more. Q-switched lasers remained the gold standard for tattoo removal until the release of the PicoSure laser in 2013. With its picosecond pulse duration, the PicoSure laser literally shatters tattoo ink into microscopic dust-like particles that can then be eliminated by the body. The result is that it takes less than half the treatments of Q-switched lasers to remove a tattoo. In a published scientific study, 100% of patients obtained greater than 75% clearance after two to four treatments with the PicoSure laser. I had been evaluating the PicoSure laser prior to its FDA clearance. While this laser can treat all tattoo colors, what held me back from adopting this exciting technology was its inconsistent results with red ink. This concern has been specifically addressed by the addition of a 532 nm wavelength, which is designed to more effectively treat red, orange, and yellow tattoo ink colors. Even with the new gold standard PicoSure laser, tattoo removal remains a tricky business.
