T SOME POINT in our life, we

all need the advice of a professional – whether it is seeing a doctor for a health problem or hiring a lawyer to write your will. You know you need some specialized help. The same can be said with needing financial advice – especially when you are faced with a transition in life such as an approaching retirement, a change in marital status, or a sudden inheritance. But it can be challenging to know who to turn to for financial advice. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to bring you this interview with Yvonne and Mike Marsh, co-owners of Marsh Wealth Management, a Registered Investment Advisor in the state of Tennessee. Unique among their peers, Marsh Wealth Management has brought together a team of licensed professionals to address all areas of financial planning, including income planning, tax services, wealth management, insurance services, and estate planning. By working together under one roof, they create a holistic, complete service experience for their clients. EK: Why is it important for people to understand that your firm is a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA)? Yvonne: It all comes down to one word, and that is “fiduciary.” As an RIA, we are held to a fiduciary standard of duty, which means we are required to act in our clients’ best interest. In comparison, a firm registered as

a broker/dealer is held to a suitability standard, which means they have to recommend a suitable investment, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be in their clients’ best interest. There has been a lot of press about the DOL Fiduciary Rule that was set to take effect on April 10 but has been delayed. This was an effort to bring all advisors providing investment advice for retirement accounts up to a fiduciary standard of duty. EK: How can a person know if their current advisor is a fiduciary or not? Mike: The easiest way is to simply ask them. It’s a yes or no question. The other way is to look at your statement and see how your advisor is being paid – if it is a flat-fee based on the size of the account, they are most likely a fiduciary. If you are invested in Class A or Class C mutual funds, for example, then the advisor is being paid by commissions and marketing fees, and that is not a fiduciary fee structure. EK: So it sounds like it is important for consumers to understand how their advisor is getting paid. Yvonne: It is very important. We all need to make a living, and no one is begrudging anyone their due compensation. But if I were a consumer, I would like to know that the investment advice I receive is free from conflicts of interest. As an RIA, we don’t receive commissions or marketing fees from trades. In our fiduciary, flat-fee based world, if the client’s account balances grow, we grow – it’s

as simple as that. I just read in the Wall St. Journal where Morgan Stanley is weighing whether to have its advisors stop using Vanguard funds because Vanguard will not agree to a revenue sharing arrangement with them. That’s actually one reason I love Vanguard funds – they keep their costs as low as possible and refuse to do any side deals with brokerage houses. EK: While we are on the topic, how much does your firm charge for asset management fees? Mike: Our fees range from 0.9% for households up to $500,000, 0.8% for households between $500,000 and $1 million, and 0.7% for households with more than $1 million in assets under management. We use an independent custodian, TD Ameritrade, and create portfolios using diversified, low cost mutual funds tailored to fit with clients’ existing holdings. EK: Yvonne, both you and Mike are CPAs. How have you been able to combine your experience as a Certified Public Accountant with your skills as a Certified Financial Planner™? Yvonne: The investment process begins with a plan – we can’t give advice on how to invest assets until we know “purpose” and “timeframe.” Being a CFP® gives me the expertise to create a solid plan, while being a CPA allows me to frame my investment advice with a tax-efficient overlay. I like to say “It’s not what you earn, it’s what you

keep.” Tax efficiency is important in the investment world, and investment advisors who are not CPAs are prohibited from providing tax advice. EK: You spend a great deal of time asking questions of, and listening carefully to, your clients. Why is this so important in creating a financial plan for your clients? Mike: You have heard that saying about people having two ears and one mouth for a reason. That is especially true in the financial world. Understanding what is important to a client, both factually and emotionally, is paramount. We also talk about their desires, their fears, and their personal risk tolerance for investing. No two plans are alike, just as no two people are alike. EK: I know that you are excited to introduce a new and totally innovative tool called Everplans™ that you provide to your wealth management clients. Tell our readers about Everplans™. Mike: Everplans™ are a secure, digital archive of everything your loved ones will need should something happen to you. It contains such things as legal documents, financial information, insurance policies, passwords, and information about your home (bills, vendors, etc.). It also includes health and medical information, advance directives, final wishes, and funeral preferences. We set it up, and then our clients grant access to whomever they choose – it breaks down the geographic boundaries if an executor lives in another state. EK: For a person who loses a loved one, how can Everplans™ be of assistance to them? Yvonne: Having an estate in good order is the last gift we give to our loved ones left behind. I have seen executors struggle through an estate closing process where no planning was done, and I have seen executors sail through the estate process when prior planning was done. Our job is to make sure the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed for our wealth management clients. EK: It would seem that your introduction of Everplans™ complements the planning, tax, money management, and estate planning services offered by Marsh Wealth Management perfectly. Mike: We had previously been using a paper copy Family Estate Organizer binder, but stepping up to Everplans™ brings a higher level of service for our firm. And we are hearing from adult children that Everplans™ is giving them a tool to start the dialogue with their parents and make sure everything is in order. the Center for Disease Control, as Americans age, they exercise less. According to the study, the older you are, the less exercise you get. Inactivity ranged from 25% for those aged 50 to 64, 27% for those aged 65 to 74, and 35% for those aged 75% and older. Inactivity is defined as moving around only to accomplish routine daily duties. from their parents and take on many of their traits. I am very much my father’s daughter, as I have acquired his conservative outlook, his amiable personality, and his great organizational skills that have served me well in running my business. My dad was a hard worker, and he passed that strong work ethic on to me. He spent his working career as a postal employee, moving up in the ranks until the day he retired. He was dependable, responsible, loyal, even tempered, honest, and patriotic. He was a giving person who asked for nothing in return, and he was a humble person who led a humble life. His family, especially his two daughters, meant everything to him. I remember Dad helping me and my sister with our school work in the evenings and taking an interest in our education. He wanted us to have the best educational opportunities, and that meant college, which his hard work

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2017

helped to provide. That education was a stepping stone for my working career, and I am truly grateful for the sacrifices made by my dad (and mom) to provide me with a quality education. My dad also was a World War II veteran who landed at Normandy. He never shared his army experiences with the family when I was young. It was much later that he came to share these memories with my husband, Tom. And even then, it was difficult for him to speak about those days. My dad was not a risk taker. He would not have chosen self employment and was skeptical about my venture as a small business owner. But he did give me encouragement and took pride in my accomplishments. My dad passed away at the age of 88, and I miss him every day. But many of his traits are now a part of me, and I am grateful to have had such a kind and loving dad who was admired by his friends, neighbors, and relatives. Happy Father’s Day, Dad! And a Happy Father’s Day to all dads.

Recently Everything Knoxville had the opportunity to interview recent European Fine Hardwood Floors customer, Rebecca A. of Knoxville. Fresh Ways to Enjoy Pizza Night and Make a Balanced Meal Shaved Apple and Romaine Crunch Salad Ingredients: » 2 hearts of romaine lettuce » 1 sweet apple, like gala or pink lady » 2 tablespoons raisins » 1 tablespoon fresh chives, sliced » 2 teaspoons sesame seeds For the salad dressing: » 3 tablespoons tahini » 2 teaspoons agave nectar or honey » 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika » Zest and juice of half a lemon » 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil » 1 teaspoon freshly chopped parsley » 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt » Couple cracks of black pepper » 2-4 tablespoons water Directions: Use a slicer or mandoline to thinly slice the apple. Place the slices in a large bowl and squeeze some lemon juice over the slices to prevent them from turning brown. Slice the romaine thinly and add it to the bowl along with the remaining salad ingredients. Set aside. For the dressing, add everything but the water to a small bowl and whisk to combine. Add enough water to loosen the dressing so it’s able to be poured. Check for seasoning; you may need a little more salt or lemon juice. Keep the dressing and salad in the fridge until ready to serve. Right before you dress the salad, add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and a couple cracks of pepper to the romaine mixture. Toss the salad with just enough dressing to coat everything, making sure not to over-dress the salad. Once the salad is dressed, it must be eaten and cannot be stored in the fridge. HILE VISITING a client out

of state recently, I discovered a television show on the Discovery Channel called Naked and Afraid. The premise of the show is a group of people trying to survive while running around in nature. I’m not an avid television fan; I’d much rather spend my time reading or pursuing other forms of family entertainment. However, as I considered the appeal of the program to the show’s audience, it made me wonder if there might be an audience for those individuals who invest naked. While “investing naked” is a slang term used to describe investors who own individual stocks without an option contract protecting them from a downward movement in the market, what I’m really trying to pinpoint is the emotions you’re investing in your investments. I observe a variety of mixed emotions relative to today’s market. I have some clients come to me taking the position that the markets are going to continue climbing the way they have during the past few months. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I see

those that are terrified the market is about to make a major correction. Both extremes are “investing naked.” These two views need to be evaluated carefully. That’s why I recommend creating a written financial plan. A written financial plan tempers your emotions, because it calculates all of the “what ifs” in life. A well-thought out, written financial plan is a customized strategy that you and your financial planner design. A true wealth manager begins with this comprehensive plan. They examine every aspect of your life, not just your investment portfolio. The plan considers income, markets, debt, business risk (if they’re a business owner), taxes, inflation, etc. Your plan takes all these variables into account and determines your response to them. Each of us is unique; therefore, our planning must be customized to the specific of our lives. A written plan provides you a baseline when emotions begin to overwhelm you, as they no doubt will at some point. The best prevention for investing emotionally naked is working with a true wealth planner. You deserve more than just a money

19th Annual Greenbrier Barn Party Raises $166,000 for National Park

The fundraising event featured live and silent auctions raising $166,205 this year in support of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Greenbrier Barn Party was co-hosted by Coach Phillip and Vicky Fulmer, Jake and Kat Ogle, along with Jim Ogle and Cheryl Houston. Special guests in attendance included University of Tennessee football coach Butch Jones and Steve Caldwell and Dan Brooks, coaches of the 1998 national championship team. This event has raised more than $1.9 million in its history, helping to fund critical projects in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including treating hemlock trees, construction of the Greenbrier Picnic Pavilion, and hiking trail reconstruction. “It has been a difficult year for many of us here in East Tennessee, but the outpouring of

nation’s Midwest, Sheila Sanford Holbo, West Tennessee native and regional artist, has returned home to Tennessee. As a multi media artist whose inspiration has always been found in nature, she was drawn to the natural beauty of East Tennessee with its abundant wildlife, rolling landscape, and mist shrouded mountains. Her first studio and gallery was located in the heart of Pigeon Forge in the Smokies. She and her husband, John, explored the mountains and back roads of the area, taking photos and discovering inspirational ideas for future works to be completed in her studio. Soon after exploring the Cherohala Skyway and the Cherokee National Forest in Monroe County, they made the decision to relocate to Tellico Plains. She also enjoys wood carving, wood burning, and fiber art. Her subjects are the area’s beautiful mountains, wildlife, and wild flowers. “I love to capture close-ups of nature that are sometimes missed at first glance,” said Sheila. “The medium varies, but the inspiration is always found in the natural world of God’s creation.” Sheila is a member of the Community Art League, which meets at the library in Athens, and is a former member of the Art Association of Monroe County, which meets at the Methodist Church in Madisonville. Her art is on display by collectors throughout the U.S., Canada, Wales, and England. Dolly Parton Helps Distribute Final My People Fund Checks and Surprises Families with $5,000 Checks

the final distribution from the My People Fund recently with recipients noticing an extra surprise when they received the check. Thanks to fundraising efforts, Dollywood Foundation officials were able to provide a $5,000 check to each family as they work to recover from the Smoky Mountain wildfires that occurred last November. Beginning last December, the My People Fund provided $1,000 each month to Sevier County families whose primary residences were completely destroyed due to the fires. In total, recipients received $10,000 as a hand-up to help start their rebuilding efforts following the fire. The fund, which was established by Dolly Parton, The Dollywood Company, Parton’s dinner theaters, and The Dollywood Foundation, was supported by contributions from across the country, as well as donations made through the Smoky Mountains Rise telethon which took place in early December. “The My People Fund has been a great success,” said Parton. “I want to thank my team, the Dollywood Foundation, my friends in the music business, and the thousands of people from all over the country who opened both their pocketbooks and their hearts to help us. “Over the last five months, we’ve given nearly 900 families $5,000 to help them recover. Recently we had our last distribution, and I went over to The LeConte Center to say thanks to all the volunteers and to help give out a few checks myself. We matched what they’ve received already with another $5,000 check. I know $10,000 can’t solve everything, but I do hope the money will help them to dream again.” In addition to providing initial monetary support to displaced families through the monthly check distribution, the remaining funds from the My People Fund will continue to help the people of Sevier County. At least $3 million will be contributed to the Mountain Tough Recovery Team, which will serve the continuing needs of residents during the critical rebuilding period ahead. This program will begin helping families on June 1. “We’re still receiving money, so we aren’t finished yet,” Parton added. “Recovery will take some time, so a new organization – called Mountain 28

Tough – has been created to help our people get back on their feet for the next three years. We’re giving at least $3 million to help this new organization begin the next chapter of our journey.” Mountain Tough assists individuals and families recovering from the wildfires by providing resources for the unmet needs of low-income families and individuals in Gatlinburg and the surrounding Sevier County area. The team seeks to restore the quality of life and provide for the long-term needs of those affected. “Mountain Tough will help pick up where the My People Fund left off,” said David Dotson, Dollywood Foundation President. “They will be staffed with case managers who will work to identify the immediate needs of residents, and our funds will be used to address those needs. For example, it may help with transportation so someone can continue to be employed, or it may help with medicine for conditions caused by the fire. Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from June 2-30. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild Quilt Show 2017 in the Lower Gallery The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild (KMQG) exists for residents in and around Knoxville who have an interest in modern design and quilting. KMQG hopes to provide members with a community where modern quilters can meet, share ideas, and create in an environment that encourages creativity and acceptance. The Guild is a member of the international Modern Quilt Guild, whose first meeting took place in January 2010 and was organized by Alissa Haight-Carlton. Mary Beth Meadows of the Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild took subsequent steps to establish KMQG in February of that same year. The Guild will exhibit quilts made using traditional means and featuring a modern aesthetic. The collection will consist of works from KMQG members. 17th Street Studios: Amalgam Volume 4 in the Balcony Gallery The artists who make up 17th Street Studios each have a unique background and specific creative inclination. Their differing goals result in bodies of work that notably contrast from one other. Yet, as these artists inhabit the same space, conversations are sparked, similarities are discovered, and a fusion of ideas take shape. As a result, the word amalgam, meaning a mixture or blend, identifies the work produced by the residents of this studio. The artists of 17th Street

Anne Freels: The Maize Abides in the Display Case Anne Freels is a full-time craft artist who has been making corn shuck dolls since 1975. She is devoted to the creative process of the craft and especially the alchemy of transforming raw, natural materials into new forms. First, she dyes the natural dried corn shucks by hand; she then rolls and ties them into the doll figures; and finally, she embellishes them with a variety of natural materials and repurposed objects. Freels’ dolls represent her imaginative notions of folklore, legend, myth, and earthly and celestial entities, as well as traditional Appalachian themes. Because of her interest in keeping the corn shuck doll craft alive, she teaches workshops and classes and has authored an instructional book on the craft. Her work is available at various craft galleries and shops in the southern Appalachian region. Susanne Tanner: Australian Walk About on the North Wall Susanne Tanner is best known for her Australian-inspired paintings depicting the natural beauty, native cultures, and modern interpretations of the Australian outback. She has exhibited her work in London, United Kingdom; Perth, Western Australia, Australia; Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia; and Taipei, Taiwan. The majority of her

work is inspired and based upon her living experiences in Australia, United Kingdom, and, most recently, America. Tanner brings a wealth of talent and knowledge from her years of solo traveling and circumnavigating the world twice, experiencing native cultures and the remote natural beauty of this planet. In this exhibition, she will feature works painted on stretched canvas using acrylic paint. The technique used in these works are with traditional handmade Australian “bush tools,” which create the “dots.” Christian Branson: A Beginner’s Evolution in the Atrium Christian Branson is an emerging artist who lives and works in the Knoxville area. A native of Panama City, FL, his colorful paintings derive from his desire for exploration into the areas of form and color cohesion, as well as contrasts between them. His art emanates a wide range of emotions and expresses the vibrant spirit and atmosphere of the human mind, individual condition, and perception of the world around him. Branson, a self-taught artist, has been painting for less than one year and has already sold several pieces to private collectors across the U.S. In his inaugural exhibition, Branson showcases paintings in various mediums from acrylic to mixed media. His abstract forms, flowers, symbols, and patterns of colors are all brought to life with contrasting and harmonious hues and bold compositions. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. DDS ARE PRETTY STRONG that you have heard

Gregg Rolie on some of your favorite songs, but you probably aren’t familiar with his background and his huge accomplishments. The first big band that Rolie was involved with – and made his voice and organ work internationally recognizable – was the original Santana band. The opening organ notes and his voice on “Black Magic Woman” is, to this day, instantly recognizable. It took the band to Woodstock and, ultimately, provided Rolie’s first induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The next huge band Rolie helped form was none other than Journey. He was keyboardist and vocalist/co-vocalist on the band’s first six albums. He left the band (“retired”) in 1980. However, Rolie recently re-joined the boys of Journey for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making it his second induction to its sacred halls. During the past six years, Rolie has been keyboardist/co-vocalist in Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band. I recently called him to chat about his induction, his work, and what it’s like working with Ringo. At the time of our conversation, it had been a few days since Rolie was at the induction ceremonies with the other Journey bandmates. I asked the obvious question of what his thoughts were about it. “Well, you know what? That’s what I always said. I’m so stunned by it. It got to the point where I was going, ‘Are they sure they got the right guy?’ I’m in there with people that I hold 32

in such high esteem. It’s a very select group of musicians to be in really good company. I was blown away by it. I still am when I look at the list. It’s all of my heroes! So to be added to that list is just stunning! And now that I’m home, it’s like, ‘Yeah, it’s cool. I did do the work!’ I mean, there’s no doubt about it!” Looking over his career – being a cofounder of Santana, playing Woodstock, co-founding Journey, in his sixth year playing with Ringo, and reuniting with Santana to recreate that past magic – it all begged the question of where he goes from here. “I know!” he said. “It’s one foot in front of the other one! Who knows? I’ve retired several times, and it just doesn’t seem to hold. I get calls to do things. ‘It’s a great idea! Let’s do that!’ I mean, it just keeps going on and on. I’ve been so fortunate. Going back and taking a look at the history of my work with all the guys I met, when I met them and everybody had the same ideas. We just grew. It was all about the music and all going forward and building it. We have played to so many generations of people. And it continues. Santana will never stop – I don’t think it will ever stop because of the style of music it is. Blues. It won’t go away. It is what it is. People still love it. Young people get hold of it. ‘Wow! This is great!’ It just keeps going on and on.” Shifting our focus to working with Ringo Starr, I asked Rolie for his thoughts about working with such an icon. “The best that I can say is you’ve seen movies on Ringo,” he said. “You’ve seen interviews on Ringo. That’s Ringo. There’s

no façade here. He runs a band really well. I’m minimizing it, but basically it’s like (going into a Ringo accent), ‘Don’t be late or I’ll leave you on the tarmac.’ It’s cut and dry just like his wit. It’s very simple. Everybody has such respect for him in the band and respect for each other. That’s why it works. It comes from him! It took me a year and a half to not sit there and spin my head around when I was on stage with him going, ‘I can’t believe I’m sittin’ here!’ Rivera told me, ‘That’s going to last about a year.’ ‘Oh, c’mon!’ I’ll be damned if he wasn’t right. I finally feel comfortable – really comfortable.” My final question for this rock and roll royalty was: When you finally step off the great tour bus called life up at that great gig in the sky, how do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy will be? His answer was humble and heartwarming. “I’ve thought about that before, and it’s very simple,” he said. “My epitaph would be: Great guy. Cool job. It’s that simple. IT WAS ALMOST nine

years ago when Larsen Jay, a successful film and video producer, suffered a near fatal accident when his ladder collapsed and sent him crashing down three stories to the pavement below his warehouse. That fall changed the trajectory of Jay’s life – and as a result, has impacted the lives of more than 200,000 other people battling injury, illness, or the aging process. Today Jay is the founder and CEO of Random Acts of Flowers, a high-impact non-profit organization planted here in Knoxville and ultimately taking root in five cities across five states. RAF’s mission is simply to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. Last month RAF Knoxville hosted an open house to share its story of growth and reconnect with volunteers, healthcare and floral partners, donors, and supporters – old and new.

“A lot has changed throughout the years,” said Connie Wallace, former RAF Knoxville board member and current co-chair of the Perennial Society. “We’re in a bigger space. We have gone from a handful of volunteers to logging almost 38,000 volunteer hours. And we have delivered hope and healing to more than 72,000 of our most vulnerable community members. But one thing hasn’t changed, and that’s the profound impact we make with each bouquet we deliver. I hope that’s something we never lose touch with or take for granted.” Attendees were introduced to RAF Knoxville’s new Program Director, Mandie Beeler, and learned of improvements planned for the facility to add capacity and improve operational efficiency. Jay also

shared the Workshop Wish List, which includes a dishwasher for cleaning the vases RAF recycles, shears and thorn and leaf strippers, prep tables, and floral picks. Because plants take a while to establish, and they take a while to die. Well, some of them anyway. Small leaf hollies and some azaleas go directly to dead (they do not pass go or collect $200), but most plants suffer a slow decline and are just now giving up the ghost. So if things are dying and you’re thinking it can’t possibly be from the drought last year, you’re probably wrong. Let me explain, because I’m getting lots of questions about this subject. If you have had a big tree go down in your yard or neighborhood, did you notice the size of the root ball? It was probably very small. Last year was so dry that big sections of plant roots just shriveled up and died. We started getting rain in the winter, but the plants simply did not have the roots

left to take it up. To complicate matters, a stressed plant sends hormones into the atmosphere, telling insects and fungus that it is struggling. Now we have had three months of weather that breeds fungus and insects, and some of the plants are just done. The good news is that you can still plant! Actually, there are many things you can do this month, so let’s get started on the list. » Yes, you really can still plant. In fact, there are several things that prefer to be planted while the ground is warm! Crepe Myrtles and grasses like it hot, and many of the vegetables prefer a warm soil. About the only thing I can think of that you can’t plant now are the cole crops like broccoli and cauliflower and some greens. » You will need to monitor your rain gauge. If we aren’t getting at least 1” of rain per week, you need to water. Remember that sprinklers are for grass and flowers but are inadequate for trees and shrubs. Those will require drip irrigation or hand watering. Call if you have questions.

» Your container gardens probably need some maintenance by now. Deadhead, cut back aggressive plants like sweet potato vine, and add a little fertilizer. Prolific bloomers such as petunias, calibrachoa, and tropical mandevilla tend to suck all the nutrients up quickly and prefer weekly feeding. » Flower beds will need the same attention as containers. Deadhead and fertilize! Don’t be afraid of cutting back plants that get leggy, because trimming will cause them to fill out nicely. Ask us if you aren’t sure how to do that. » How are your perennials? Are they getting leggy, too? You can cut them back so they won’t flop. Now is also the time to cut back flower stalks on iris and peonies and give a haircut to fall bloomers such as asters, mums, goldenrod, and sedum. If you still have foliage from spring bulbs, you can also remove that if it has yellowed. » While you’re outside giving haircuts, check for disease and insects. Our damp spring has caused a proliferation of both! The sooner you treat, the better the response. A weekly checkup of your plants will make your life so much easier! » Did you do a vegetable garden or container? You will need to be especially vigilant now for bugs and caterpillars that can decimate your harvest! Pick off larger invaders, and use insecticidal soap for the little guys. You also need to watch for signs of fungus or blights so you can begin treatment ASAP. Remember that you shouldn’t plant veggies in the same place every year. I know crop rotation sounds silly when you’re using containers or raised beds, but it is arguably the most important thing you can do to prevent/reduce disease. » Weed, weed, weed! They will take over before you know it. Hand pull, spray, and Preen after you finish. » Take care of the birds, and they will show their appreciation by eating bad bugs. Keep feeders and birdbaths full and clean. If you use a good quality bird food, you won’t have the waste and weeds caused by cheap seeds. Some forecasts predict that our roller coaster weather will continue for the foreseeable future, so hang in there! June tends to be one of the more enjoyable months, and I’m crossing my fingers that it will be this year! Have a great summer, and let us know if you have questions. sometimes suggest that summer is already here, while the calendar says it doesn’t start until June 21st! Depending on the weather, one May- and June-flowering tree will add late spring interest to your landscape by extending the spring blooming season closer to the beginning of summer. The tree? Styrax japonicus, also known as Japanese snowbell. Japanese snowbell is a small, dainty tree suitable for the urban landscape. I have to admit, I had never heard of this small tree until I added it to the arboretum at the Unversity of Memphis. Dr. Michael Dirr, in his Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, states it as one “of the unknown trees that is worthy of extensive landscape use.” I decided to place my specimen on a prominent site where it could be viewed by many people. My efforts have been well rewarded! Even though the tree flowers in May and June after the leaves appear, the blooms hang down on delicate pendulous stalks. The leaves are attached to the upper part of the stem so the flowers are in full view. Japanese snowbell likes well-drained soil and prefers afternoon shade. This small, 20to 30-ft tall, low-branched tree will look great near a patio, in a mixed border of shrubs, or in any situation that calls for a small tree with

horizontal branching. The blooms of Japanese snowbells are usually white, bell-shaped, and slightly fragrant, but pink-flowering varieties are available. The fall foliage color is not spectacular, but the leaves do turn yellow to red in color. Japanese snowbells drop their small leaves late in the fall, and their delicate branches, which zig-zag at the tips, are scruffy and rough making for an interesting winter silhouette. planted in the spring or fall on a partially shaded site. It prefers a slope or raised-bed area supplemented with organic matter, and the tree will benefit from a complete fertilizer like 14-14-14 the first year. I did very little to supplement my tree in subsequent years except to water consistently during the summer season and to enjoy its beauty! ‘Emerald Pagoda’ seems to be a more heattolerant variety with thicker and darker leaves, while ‘Snowfall’ has a dense and rounded habit with prolific white flowers. ‘Marley’s Pink’ is a small, weeping form that has pink flowers. If you are looking for a small tree to grace your landscape and extend the perennial blooms in your yard, consider Styrax japonicus, the Japanese snowbell. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. much respect in mainstream awards shows. However, when it happens, it usually goes to those who have already left this world. Such was not the case at the recent Grammy Awards. Recently long-time blues vocalist, Bobby Rush, was finally honored with his first Grammy. At 83 years old, it’s a long overdue honor for the blues legend. I recently chatted with Rush about the Grammy and the album that he won it for, as well as about the music business in general. When I started off by congratulating him for his Grammy, he expressed genuine gratitude and humility. “Let me say this to you: My mind was made that even if I didn’t bring it home, I was a winner, because I was in the race!” he said. “That’s my attitude about it, because to be in the race – I accept this because of a lot of guys I beat out were more qualified than me. That doesn’t mean I would’ve been happy if I didn’t bring it home, but there are millions of guys who hadn’t gotten it and do as much as I do – it could be more. But I just appreciate it, and I appreciate the guys I’d been running with – who I was in the race with – although I won and they lost. That’s the way it goes. Some win. Some lose. We all are friends in spite of that business stuff.” We then shifted the gears of our conversation to the subject of his Grammy winning album, Porcupine Meat, and how putting this record together was different for him than all the other records he recorded. “Well, it wasn’t that much different than two or three others,” he said. “But, I’ll tell you, it’s different than a lot of them. First of all, in 1966, I had a record. It was ‘Chicken Head’, and I didn’t know how to tell a guy the title of the song – Calvin Carter, who had Vee Jay Records. Later on in ’81, I had a song called ‘Sue’. In ’83 or 4, I had ‘Ain’t Studdin’ Ya’. I had many records, but every time I had titles like this, I always looked for titles like this that were a gimmick thing for titles. Everything I did that was titled like that seemed to be successful. So, when I had this song, ‘Porcupine Meat’, I wanted to propose it to the producer, who was Scott Billington. We’ve become very good friends, so I was comfortable enough to tell him, ‘Well, listen, I gotta song that I think is gonna be a hit record.’ He said, ‘What’s the name of it?’ I said, ‘Porcupine Meat’. He just fell out laughing. I guess he thought it was some kind of joke.”

Rush later shared his story as to how he was asked to speak at B.B. King’s funeral. With humility, he said, “It’s almost like B.B. King, when he passed the torch, he passed it to me. Then the family said, ‘Well, Bobby Rush, are you going to the funeral?’ I said, ‘Yes, I’m goin’.’ ‘Since you’re goin’, we’d like for you to say a word or two.’ I said, ‘Okay, put me on the program.’ ‘We’d like to let you have the last word.’” With our chat wrapping up, I asked Rush how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. “I want people to know that out of all the ups and downs and the struggles and hardship, though it seems like a dream come true, if you do what you want to do in life and feel good about it and do it well, it’s not a dream,” he said. “It’s reality, but it takes time to do it. I want people to know that whatever you set your mind to do, if it’s impossible and God’s will of it, it’ll come to pass. But I do want people to know that it was written

that a cow jumped over the moon, but you gotta be smart enough to know, in the book, he really didn’t jump over the moon. The cow didn’t really jump over the moon. It’s gotta be realistic to yourself. I want people to know from me that I did what I did, and I did it my way. Adra Cooper, Camp Director, notes experience doing theater with young people has led her to value its positive effects. “I have seen introverted students, who barely speak or look you in the eye, become talkative and confident young adults after finding confidence on stage,” she said, adding that she thoroughly enjoyed the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse theater camp last year. “I especially enjoyed watching the kids grow in their confidence.” Adra brings a wealth of experience from working with youth as a drama teacher, director, and past camp director. and Josh Farner. Both young men grew up doing theater in Oak Ridge and Knoxville and are excited to share their enthusiasm with the Playhouse campers. Adam Moreno, assistant camp instructor, was very involved in Oak Ridge High School’s drama group, the Masquers. Adam continued his education and graduated with a degree in theater (specializing in acting) in 2016 from Middle Tennessee State University. “Theater gives you a number of skills you can’t get in any other one platform,” said Adam. “It teaches you to work with others (even if you don’t get along), to speak in front of a crowd, to listen to others, to take constructive criticism, and much more.”

Josh Farner, also an assistant camp instructor, was a frequent participant at the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse growing up both as an actor and as a crew member. Josh currently attends the Josh Farner University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is majoring in producing, directing, and playwriting. Josh attended the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse summer camps himself, so he’s especially excited to return as an instructor. “I hope to expand kids’ love of theater and performing,” he said. “I want them to have lots of fun and increase their confidence through acting.” The week-long camp will begin on Monday, June 12, from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Thursday. Friday will culminate with a showcase performance at 5 pm for family and friends on stage at the Playhouse. of its beginnings and the “Big Science” invented here have been the envy of several tourism studies that have been completed throughout the years. These studies examined various aspects of tourism, and in every case, the significance of Oak Ridge was seen as regionally important. In Oak Ridge, they have now coined a new term “Heritage and Science Tourism” and are planning to grow the emphasis on “Science” in the coming months and years. Oak Ridgers have relied on their historical “Heritage” for a number of years and now intend to provide added emphasis on the “Science” for tourism. Historically, the decision was made by General Leslie Groves on September 19, 1942, to locate the first production facility of the Manhattan Project in East Tennessee. Construction of the Administration Building that became the “Castle on the Hill” was begun in November 1942 – according to the John Hendrix legend, right between Tadlock’s farm and Pyatt’s place. This historical “Heritage” aspect of tourism has been successfully contributing to Oak Ridge’s economy for years. Here are just a few of the many examples of the “Science” emanating from Oak Ridge: Nuclear medicine, nuclear power, nuclear navy fuel, touch screen technology, Y chromosome’s role revealed here, discovery of high-temperature superconducting materials, electron microscopy, an important role in the discovery of element 117 named Tennessine, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory even solved the mystery of President Zachary Taylor’s death. The Secret City Festival held in June of each year celebrates the origins of Oak Ridge in a number of ways. From assembling World War re-enactments to this year’s theme, “Celebrate Our Heroes,” the Secret City Festival reflects back on the history of Oak Ridge. This year the festival has some new features. First, all events are FREE. It is extended to cover two weekends beginning Friday, June 2, with the official opening of the festival and tours to both the Y-12 National Security Complex and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Graphite Reactor, as well as the regularly scheduled Department of Energy Public Tour. All tours originate at the American Museum of Science and Energy on Tulane Avenue. Shuttles will run between the museum and the New Hope Center at the Y-12 National Security Complex. You may drive directly to the New Hope Center and meet the one-hour tours of Y-12 there. Future festivals could well evolve into events with a stronger emphasis on “Science” 62

to capitalize on the potential of Heritage and Science Tourism. Other tourism events in Oak Ridge and the region can result in synergy for the entire region’s tourism potential. Many surrounding cities and counties are also increasing emphasis on the potential for tourism. The Coal Miner’s Museum recently opened in Rocky Top is but one example. The Green McAdoo continues to grow in significance for the region. The Museum of Appalachia remains a mainstay. Human powered sports are growing in Oak Ridge. Off-road experiences at Windrock continue to grow… and there are more examples in the region. An expanded understanding of the value of tourism to our economy will hopefully bring a collective and coordinated promotion of Heritage and Science Tourism in the region, not just Oak Ridge. Capitalizing on the draw of the Oak Ridge Corridor with its technology based connection will produce growth in all areas of the region. The Manhattan Project National Historical Park is another value-added element in Oak Ridge. Their presence here since November 10, 2015, has continued to bring a breath of fresh air into many aspects of life in Oak Ridge. The partnerships created with the American Museum of Science and Energy, the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge, the Girl Scouts, Girls Inc, and others are certainly amazing to see. The National Park staff members are constantly presenting historical ranger walks to

the iconic Gatehouses and the Chapel on the Hill. They routinely offer “bike with a ranger” trips on the Oak Ridge Greenways, monthly newsletters and newspapers, as well as other program activities. Involvement with the adult education Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning and speaking at various civic clubs and other organizations have all contributed to the Manhattan Project National Historical Park quickly becoming a mainstay of our community. Oak Ridge’s relationship with the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance has grown throughout the years and ultimately, in partnership with the Department of Energy’s Environmental Management office, resulted in the preservation of the iconic Guest House – now officially a part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park and a top-notch senior living center known as the Alexander Guest House developed by Rick Dover. The project has also been awarded the Chairman’s Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation of the President’s Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C., on July 13, 2016. It is a source of pride in the community and often included in tours for tourists visiting Oak Ridge. Finally, the Oak Ridge International Friendship Bell is nearing the start of construction of a new Peace Pavilion in a new more central location in A.K. Bissell Park. This icon of Oak Ridge that was a product of the 50th anniversary has grown to become a central element in Oak Ridge. Not just because of its attraction for tourism, but for its deeper meaning recalling the history of Oak Ridge’s origins – at the same time pointing toward our future of continued peace without global conflict. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance of a 16-county region of Middle East Tennessee. Oak Ridge is an excellent example of the value of historical heritage and also the value of a strong focus on the future potential of the key elements that make up the essence of the city.

Small Business Optimism Surges

of 2016, there has been an un den iabl e su rge in s mall business optimism nationwide. And despite the feelings on the part of many that this upswing in optimism is tied directly to the presidential election, I have no interest in wading into the possible political aspects of this much welcomed rise in sentiment. Besides, we already have a 24/7 news media that will debate this renewed optimism for us. Regardless of who you voted for in the last election, there’s no denying that this new level of optimism among small business owners has spiked dramatically in recent months. The real question for you to consider is how are you planning to take full advantage of this rising tide? Here are some facts to consider: » Small business lending has now increased to pre-recession 2008 levels, signaling an expansion in small business growth. » A recent Bank of America survey found that 51% of small business owners expect the economy to improve during the next 12 months compared to only 31% last fall.

The cost of action is likely far less than the cost of sitting on the fence. » ADP has reported a nearly three-fold increase in hiring from the fourth quarter of 2016 by small businesses that employ fewer than 50 employees. » The National Association of Manufactures has reported that 93% of manufacturing industry executives are optimistic about the future of the economy, up from 56% just a few months ago. Regardless of all of these positive signs, the great recession has dramatically changed the behavior of many of today’s

M O O R E knows firsthand the benefits of quality instruction for students of all ability levels. Moore is graduating from the University of Tennessee with a doctorate in special education, and he’s excited to continue his work supporting teachers of diverse students. “In order to help support teachers and those preparing to be teachers, I knew that I would have to return for my PhD to maximize my knowledge and skill in researching and practicing Universal Design for Learning,” said Moore. “I know that is going to be a lifelong process, but having earned my PhD equips me to serve as a consultant and collaborator with local schools, prepare preservice teachers, and contribute to the research base related to UDL. I want to do it all!” Moore, who began to lose his hearing at age 10, has already been a teacher for more than a decade, teaching students of all backgrounds and ethnicities. He’s come to appreciate how important UDL is and how much it benefits all students but wants to help make it more widely known. “The practice of UDL is often at 64

odds with the traditional structures of education in many K-12 and university settings,” said Moore. “Challenging the way that instructors have instructed for generations is not something to take lightly. To make headway in the practice of UDL, especially in higher education, it’s often about finding the right people, the right moment, and the right acknowledged problem as a foothold to begin a conversation, which leads to opportunities for collaboration and growth.” Moore is currently working on developing the presence of UDL instructional design at UTK. That includes drafting lessons, acquiring resources, consulting with staff, and leading professional development opportunities. Each day is different. “I love the dynamics of it,” said Moore. “Every day is something new. Earlier this week I created a research report to guide policy and practice. Yesterday I conducted product evaluation and offered design insight and consultation. Today I will be designing a new tool to help faculty reflect on inclusive practices at each stage

PLANNER™ The suitability standard meant that if an investment recommendation met a client’s defined needs and objectives, the standard was deemed to been met. The new Fiduciary standard demands that advisors act in the best interest of their clients and put their clients’ interests above their own personal interests. In the past, Fiduciary standards only applied to those financial service professionals charging a fee for their services (hourly or as a percentage of account holdings) on retirement plans. The new rule includes any professional making a financial or investment recommendation or solicitation. It also requires that all conflicts of interest be disclosed and that all fees received by the adviser be disclosed in dollars to their clients. While the new standard provides an extra level of protection to investors, it only applies to retirement assets. Taxable transactional accounts or accounts funded with after-tax dollars are not considered retirement plans even if the funds are earmarked for retirement savings. So those individuals that are selling highly commissioned financial products will continue to conduct business as usual. Advisors that charge commissions can continue to offer their services under the existing suitability standard by having their clients sign a Best Interest Contract Exemption (BICE), resulting in additional paperwork for their clients. The Fiduciary Rule may be a steep climb for small independent broker dealers and Registered Investment Advisor firms. They may lack the necessary resources, technology, and compliance expertise to meet all the requirements. The United Kingdom enacted a similar Fiduciary Rule in 2011, resulting in the number of financial advisors dropping by 23%. Also, the extra costs and compliance requirements might force some financial advisors to avoid small and mid-sized investors. Tips for Vacationing with Children and Teens

grandparents can have lofty ideas about how nice it will be vacationing with children. Those grand family dreams often get tossed out the window within the first hour or two of the vacation – and well before the vacation destination is even reached. Vacationing with kids isn’t easy. In fact, it can be downright frustrating if you don’t plan ahead to meet all the inevitable things that can happen. Here are some tips for vacationing with children and teens. » More clothes are better: The old saying that “less is more” doesn’t work when it comes to kids and clothes – no matter their age. You simply cannot pack light when you travel with children. Unless you plan on doing laundry on your vacation, pack heavy. Young children get dirty, wet, and sick. Teens can spend hours grumbling about not having the “right” clothes to wear. Nip the entire chaotic scene in the bud and lug all those suitcases full of kids’ clothes along when you vacation. It will be worth it.

» Pack medication: Children seem to have aches and pains at the most inconvenient times. Pack any and all medications that you can think of when you travel with kids. This includes medication for fevers, car sickness, upset stomachs, allergies, ointments, band-aids for cuts, and so on. Having it on hand beats having to locate a pharmacy with an upset or sick child in tow. » Pack food: Pack food that will appease the munchies. Kids’ appetites are strange things. You can be at a restaurant and they tell you they aren’t hungry. Then, half an hour later and miles away from anywhere, or in the hotel room, they’re starving. So, pack food and drinks. » Entertainment bags: If you’re going on a road trip with children, pack each child an entertainment bag. The bag should be full of age appropriate toys and items that will keep the kids occupied on the road. Ideas include crayons and coloring books, sing-along CDs, handheld video games, and so on. » Take your own baby gear: If you’re traveling with a very small child, don’t

depend on the hotel or resort’s cribs, playpens, or strollers to safely do the job. Also, small children often feel strange when in a new location and sleeping in a new bed or playpen. Avoid the entire situation by bringing your own baby gear with you when you travel. » Be flexible: The last thing you’ll need to plan for when vacationing with children is flexibility. Avoid planning too much, as this can over-stimulate children, especially small ones. It’s ok to have some activities planned, but be sure to schedule in some downtime, too. Teaching Our Children How to Handle Compliments W E ALL CAN STRUGGLE

at times when we receive a compliment from someone. Often it can make us feel awkward, because we’re not sure the best way to respond. If it’s difficult for us, then we must assume it also can be difficult for our children. The best way to respond to a compliment is simply to say “thank you,” but be sure to show your sincere gratitude as you say it. You can do this by looking the person in the eye and with true sincerity, expressing your gratitude. With our children, it is a great idea to role play a few example situations. For instance, let’s say someone at church says to your

daughter, “That is such a lovely dress you have on today. You look beautiful.” Your child would hopefully look up and make eye contact and then say something like, “Thank you so much. My grandma bought it for me.” On another occasion, a neighbor could come up to your son and say something like, “Wow, you really are fast on your bike.” Hopefully your son would stop, look up at the neighbor, making eye contact while smiling, and say something like, “Well, thank you so much for noticing. I’ve been practicing a lot and am trying to get faster.” Today it seems very impressive when any child or young person simply makes eye contact and speaks directly and purposefully

with adults. Too often children and young people look down at the ground when an adult tries to speak to them and mumble responses that are sometimes difficult to understand. Parents, as you role play some scenarios with your children, they will increase in their confidence and be able to handle compliments from others with kindness and gratitude. Practice makes perfect!
