I T H J U N E co m e s w a r m e r w e a t h e r, longer days, no school, vacations (hopefully!), and Father’s Day. As we continue to get back to “normal,” friends and family are excited about spending more time together or may be excited about spending less time together if everyone has been working and schooling from home! My own father just announced that he would like our family to begin making a concerted effort to visit with each other more often - by phone, Zoom, or in person. A valid request after more than a year of little to no face-to-face contact! I am thankful that 1) He feels that way and 2) He is willing to voice it and ask for our cooperation. Over the years, my dad has grown into someone who is much more tuned in to his emotions - a big softy, if you will - and we couldn’t be more delighted with the transition. We all need to grow and evolve (hopefully!) as the years go by and

we are faced with unforeseen circumstances. I know that during the pandemic, instead of heading to the office each day, many dads ended up working from home. That was a major adjustment within itself; add in kids being around all the time and those dads had the “opportunity” to become more involved in their family’s daily activities. The realization of the family bond was put to the test and relationships were strengthened (hopefully!). Our feature story this month, The Lunchbox - a business that began as, and continues to be, a “family business” - is a testament to both transitioning dads and keeping up with family ties. Much better to be on this journey with family or with those in our lives who seem like they should be! So to all the dads out there, striving to be the best parents they can be, Bravo! Keep transitioning, and Happy Father’s Day. Thanks, Pop!

Creating and Continuing the Legacy of Knoxville’s Favorite Lunch Spot

Foodservice was a natural - but how? I had no formal training, just instincts. There were very few restaurants in downtown Knoxville in 1980 and a large workforce of daytime-only professionals and office staff. Committed to being available for my children, I thought if I opened a small, lunch-only restaurant, I could be home on weekends and when they got home from school. I stumbled across a little building (across from the City County building) where the owners were very receptive to the idea of a restaurant. After readying the space, we printed 1,000 flyers to announce our concept and opening date and then delivered them to the offices within walking distance. Bringing pots and pans from home, having seating for only 24, no dishwasher or prep space, and three employees, we launched on June 7, 1981. We set a goal for sales on day one and exceeded it running out of everything!

In 1985, we expanded the building to 45 seats and later moved to our dream space (in one weekend and didn’t miss a day!) in the First Tennessee Plaza. With more than half of our business as take-out, we then established a central kitchen and Market/Café on Center Park Drive in the mid-1990s. This allowed us to prepare and deliver fresh food every day to our locations around town while enabling our customers to serve themselves - to eat in, to take back to their offices, to take home, or all three in one efficient stop!

Everything Knoxville is honored to share the history, guiding principles and the exciting future of this beloved lunch spot that celebrates its 40th Anniversary in 2021. We were delighted to meet founder Karen Sproles recently and asked her to tell us how it all began. Here is Karen’s story:

In 1979, I found myself a single mom with two young daughters and had to come to grips with how I was going to support us. I have a degree in math education, but after a year of teaching, realized that it was not my joy or calling. Growing up in Wisconsin, surrounded by the influence of my grandmother and mother - the best natural cooks ever - caring for people with food had become a part of me.

Two weeks after opening, I met my future husband, Don Sproles. He endeared himself to my daughters and often showed up at The Lunchbox on Sunday afternoons when we were trying to get a jump on food for the week. Before long he was rolling up his sleeves and taking over at the cash register. We were married July 3, 1982, choosing that day so we’d have a three-day weekend for a “honeymoon.”

My business philosophy is summed up in four words: Honesty, Service, Respect, and Accountability. We aimed to be much more than a sandwich; the goal was feel good food. My mantra to my new employees was always “Our customers have probably had a stressful morning. It’s our job to send them back to work feeling better than when they came in!” The Lunchbox is why I encourage others to “listen to your heart!” I was tracked to be a teacher - who knew cooking for people you care about could be a career? Everything Knoxville then had the opportunity to talk to current owners, Randy and Trish Holmes, who are committed to maintaining Karen’s business philosophy. The staff at all three locations sung their praises for continuing the tradition of The Lunchbox. The entire Holmes family have

EK: There are many options for food in Knoxville. Why do you think The Lunchbox has such staying power? Randy: The difference is “the formula hasn’t changed.” We have made sure to stay as true to Karen’s recipes as we can, which continue to be the heartbeat and foundation of The Lunchbox. The signature chicken salad, soups, fresh sandwiches, and ready-to-go desserts have always been a major draw. Did You Notice This Proposed Tax Increase?

HERE’S A LOT of press surrounding President Biden’s proposed personal tax increases to help pay for the American Families Plan, and it’s important to know which ones Yvonne Marsh, apply to you and your family. At CFP®, CPA the moment, these proposals are just that - and not final. Here are two potential tax increases that get a lot of press but probably won’t affect you: • Individuals with taxable income over $523,600 and couples over $628,300 would revert to a 39.6% top tax bracket from the current 37%. • Households with over $1 million in income would see the base tax rate on capital gains and qualified dividends increase from 20% to 39.6%. This type of income would continue to be subject to the 3.8% net investment income tax. But there is a third proposed change based on assets rather than income that I find the most compelling to watch and which will, arguably, affect more people: • The elimination of the step-up in basis for inherited non-retirement assets. Currently, if you buy a share of stock and sell it for a profit, you pay capital gains tax on the profit. Or if you never sold it and passed the stock to your heirs, the entire embedded gain goes away - your heir escapes taxation. But under this new proposal, death is treated like a sale, and your heirs would have to recognize the capital gain you never did. This would apply to non-retirement investment accounts, vacation homes, rental property, family businesses, farms, etc. This rule has a $1 million exemption, so that helps lessen the impact for many households. Keep your eye on the expiration of the current personal tax rates, which are already legislated to expire in 2025. Taxes will never be cheaper than they are right now, and multi-year systematic Roth conversion strategies should be an integral part of your tax planning between now and then. Needless to say, proactive tax planning will continue to be imperative under these constantly shifting sands of the tax code! Join me June 15th on Zoom to learn more. Before coming to East Tennessee, he worked with contractors and interior designers as a manager of a title company. Chris related, “I loved the fact that Cesar has a musical theater/dance background. Cesar designs everything from individual closets to storage for the entire house including garages and epoxy floor finishes. “Organization does not mean perfection, but I design for looks and function. Clutter is like visual noise, often crowding out the space that we need to move ourselves forward.” Robin Carbaugh, an accomplished photographer who minored in art at MTSU, has called Knoxville home for the past 26 years. Robin and her husband, Travis, owned a custom organization business for 15 years, and one of their industry peers and biggest supporters was Chris McKenry. “I have always been impressed with Robin’s professionalism and her design work,” said Chris. “When I returned to Knoxville and started this business we reconnected, and during the height of the pandemic, she reached out and quickly took to our design program.” Customer service is Robin’s specialty,

HE BLUES . Rock. Mystique. Intrigue. Other worldliness. Ubercoolness. All these words come to mind when one hears the name Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. He founded and has been in ZZ Top for more than 50 years. I first had the privilege of interviewing Billy Gibbons a little over four years ago (November 2016). He has a new solo project out, Hardware, and I recently interviewed him about it. As to how he had been handling the pandemic, Gibbons said: “Well, it’s been a very unusual succession of ‘Taco Tuesdays.’ The ‘BFG Three’ (Billy F. Gibbons) trio followed Matt “Big Beat” Sorum - who led us 20 miles overland into within shifting sands through California’s high desert, near the famed outpost in Joshua Tree, which found us making a discovery of a recording studio. We got there just to check things out and ended up staying for three months!” Hardware is Gibbons’ third solo album. I asked how this one was different for him to put together than the other two and the ZZ Top albums. “This new outing can be thought of as a continuing excursion into the unknown,” he said. “Lending ourselves to the creative energies of the desert found days turning into nights and back into day. It was the elegance of losing track of time to some extent. And, as the sessions in the studio began to unfold, the approach turned quite ecumenical. The first BFG solo album was aimed toward the sounds of Havana. The second release was all about the blues, and this most recent, Hardware, is anybody’s guess. I mean, we have surf guitar blending into western film themes. Talk about something of a departure! Surf music in the middle of a bone-dry desert!?!? Go figure!” When asked which song he would point to as a calling card on Hardware, Gibbons answered: “That might be somewhat difficult to answer right off the bat. However, I suspect we should start at the beginning. Side one, track one is ‘West Coast Junkie’, and no, it’s not about hard drugs but rather our ‘jones’ for the California experience. We dig the surf and the sand and whatever’s in between. The lyric is somewhat autobiographical: ‘I’m a West Coast junkie from a Texas town, and when I get to Cali it’s gonna go down,’ and ‘gettin’ down’ became

the order of the hour!” “Desert High,” another song on Hardware, has a very Jim Morrison-esque vibe to it. I asked Gibbons about the story behind it. “It’s the album closer and something of a collection of verse with a prose-like tone with, of course, references to ‘the Lizard King.’ The song paints a mind picture deeply inspired by the desolation of the desert. The Mojave really holds a place of mystery and intrigue, and it inspired us to sum things up in a way not dissimilar to maybe a theme for some western film. “Our pre-ZZ band, The Moving Sidewalks, actually shared performance bills with the Doors, so there’s a personal connection in it as well. Similarly with Gram Parsons, also referenced in the delivery. We met Gram while admiring a vintage touring bus parked in front of a theater when he came over to chat about it. We thought he might have been the driver, but he introduced himself as ‘Gram’ and being in the band. We knew we had met the man himself.” One of the songs on the album is “Stackin’ Bones” - a duet with multi-instrumentalist sister group, Larkin Poe. Why them and why that song? “Well, they’re just so talented and different, aren’t they?!? We met them through Tyler Bryant, with whom we toured. Rebecca and Megan found their way to quite a few backstage sections at ZZ shows, so we asked Tyler who they were. Turns out Tyler’s married to Rebecca. We then heard them play at a sound check, and

we were immediately taken aback. If there was going to be any guest musician on this album, it just had to be Larkin Poe, and the collaboration with us is sturdy propulsive, isn’t it?” And what are the good reverend’s post pandemic plans? “Gonna get out there with both ZZ Top and our BFG outfit as soon as the coast is clear,” said Gibbons. “It’s way time to turn it up and play some loud sounds. As the scheduling returns, live entertainment dates with Matt Sorum, Austin Hanks, and yours truly from the Hardware sessions will be hitting the deck!” What does Gibbons hope his legacy is? “‘He came in, he strapped up, he plugged in, he turned it up, he rocked out.’ Seems like a legacy of substance, no?” Yes, it most certainly does. Thousand Island Burger Pizza Prep time: 15 minutes Total time: 25 minutes Servings: 6 Ingredients: • 1 can (11 ounces) refrigerated thin pizza crust • 12 ounces lean ground beef • 1 cup pizza sauce • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese • 1 package (9.4 ounces) Fresh Express Bacon Thousand Island Chopped Kit • 1/3 cup dill pickle slices Directions: Heat oven to 400ͦ F. Unroll dough and spread on 13x9 inch nonstick baking sheet. Bake 8 minutes; remove from oven. In small skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef, stirring frequently, 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink; drain. Spread sauce evenly on baked dough to within 1/2 inch of edge. Top with beef and cheese. Bake 8-10 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Top with lettuce, bacon, and salad toppings from kit and pickle slices. Drizzle with Thousand Island dressing from kit. Cut into 12 (3x3 inch) pieces.

USA Cycling 2021 Pro Road National Championships Return to Knoxville

HE 2021 USA Pro Road National Championships will be held in Knoxville June 17-20. This is the fourth year for Knoxville to host the U.S. Pro Road and Individual Time Trial Championships and the third year to host the U.S. Pro Criterium Championships. The event is free to the public to attend. Individual Time Trial National Championships Thursday, June 17 The ITT will be held on a 6.9-mile section of roadways that traverse along the banks of Melton Lake and the internationally-acclaimed Oak Ridge Rowing venue in Oak Ridge. The women will complete two laps of the 6.9-mile ITT course for a total distance of 22.8 kilometers. The men will complete three laps for a total distance of 34.2 kilometers. The course is relatively flat with three technical u-turns, allowing spectators to see athletes pass multiple times from one location. Criterium National Championships Friday, June 18 The Criterium will be held under the lights

of downtown Knoxville, with the start and finish on Gay Street. The 1.1-mile circuit is fast, short, and technical. Athletes will race for a set amount of time and then a specific number of finishing laps. The women will race for a maximum of 75 minutes, and the men will race for a maximum of 90 minutes. Pro Road National Championships Sunday, June 20 The peloton returns to downtown Knoxville with some exciting new additions. As with the Crit, the Road Race course will start and finish on Gay Street, allowing for incredible viewing experiences. The 7.9-mile route will cover familiar territory, crossing the Tennessee River via the iconic Gay Street Bridge, traversing the signature climb up Sherrod Street, and using the James White Parkway to return downtown through Knoxville’s historic Old City.

A new challenge for the athletes will be a punchy climb at the end of each circuit on Clinch Avenue to reach the start/finish. The women will race 9 laps for a total distance of 71 miles, and the men will complete 15 laps for a total distance 118.5 miles. Walker Evans Photography at UT Downtown Gallery

OR THE months of June and July, the UT Downtown Gallery will be exhibiting photography from the Ewing Gallery permanent collection by Walker Evans. 80 years ago, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was published. To commemorate the anniversary of this text by author and Knoxville native, James Agee, the gallery is exhibiting photographs by Walker Evans that accompany that text. Walker Evans’ photographs paired with James Agee’s classic work, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, served as the culmination of Evans’ talents, as well as the realistic portrayal of the impoverished conditions of the American tenant farmer during the 1930s during the Great Depression. Walker Evans’ images revolutionized the standards of documentary photography. President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” programs designed to help the poorest segments of the society. Agee and Evans spent eight weeks that summer researching their assignment, mainly among three white sharecropping families mired in desperate poverty. They returned with Evans’ portfolio of stark images— of families with gaunt faces, adults and children huddled in bare shacks with dusty yards in the Depressionera deep south. This exhibition includes 50 framed photographs printed by the Library of Congress from Evans’ original negatives.

Disease-Resistant Basil: New Varieties Bring Hope in the Fight Against Downy Mildew BY H O L LY J O N E S , H O RT I C U LT U R I S T, U T G A R D E N S , K N OX V I L L E

AVE YOU NOTICE D your sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) plants suffering from diseased leaves and stems in recent years? If so, the chances are good that basil downy mildew (Peronospora belbahrii) is the culprit. This fungus-like pathogen has been plaguing farmers and home gardeners since it was identified in the U.S. in 2007. Thankfully, scientists, farmers, and home gardeners now have science-based tools and advice we can put to use to save our basil. One of the most exciting developments has been the recent release of downy mildew resistant (DMR) varieties. At least six new varieties from multiple independent breeding programs have become commercially available in the past few years. So far, they are all pretty promising. From Rutgers University we have ‘Devotion,’ ‘Obsession,’ ‘Passion,’ and ‘Thunderstruck.’ Notice a theme here? They are all named in honor of the Italian tradition associating basil with love. Other varieties are also available. The retail supplier Johnny’s Selected Seeds is marketing Prospera® from an Israeli breeder, and the Proven Winners brand has trademarked Amazel Basil® from the University of Florida. While choosing a resistant cultivar is a key part of a pest management strategy, it is not a silver bullet. Resistance does not guarantee complete immunity, so it is best to cover all the angles when trying to prevent this disease. Start with disease-free seeds or plants from a reputable source, provide optimum growing conditions, and learn to recognize disease symptoms so you can remove infected plants as soon as possible. Cultural controls (i.e. providing an ideal environment) are important because they help keep the plants healthy, as well as discourage the establishment of pests and diseases. Basil is a warm-season annual that grows best in full sun with fertile soil that is moist but well drained. If possible, water at the soil level rather than overhead. Keeping the leaves as dry as possible and providing good air circulation will create a less hospitable place for downy mildew to flourish. Chemical controls such as organic and conventional fungicides can be effective if applied regularly. For up to date fungicide recommendations and more

Amazel Basil® is a promising variety in the fight against basil downy mildew. detailed information on the disease, refer to the Cornell University publication Basil Downy Mildew at www.cornell.edu. The main symptoms to watch for are yellowing leaves beginning toward the bottom of the plant, fuzzy gray spores on the undersides of the leaves, angular black spots and disfiguration on the leaves, and leaf drop. If you see these characteristic signs developing, you should harvest the entire plant. The healthy leaves are still safe to eat, and removing the plant will prevent the disease from spreading to other basil plants. Though the DMR-resistant varieties may develop the disease eventually, they generally stay healthy longer than traditional varieties, which means the grower can harvest basil for a longer period of time. If you are open to a broader flavor palette, you can also opt to grow some of the less common basil varieties like ‘Sweet Dani Lemon,’ ‘African Blue Holy,’ ‘Spicy Globe,’ and ‘Purple Ruffle.’ These varieties, as well as a handful of other licorice- and

lemon-flavored types, showed good resistance to downy mildew during a 2018 basil trial at UT Gardens, Jackson. At the UT Gardens Kitchen Garden in Knoxville, we have grown Amazel Basil,® as well as ‘Devotion’ and ‘Obsession’ with decent results. Amazel Basil® showed no signs of downy mildew in 2019 but did develop symptoms towards the end of the season in 2020. All three of these varieties will be on display for the 2021 growing season. The UT Gardens sites in Jackson and Crossville have successfully grown Amazel Basil® with no signs of the disease.   The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. is taking her own sweet time warming up this year and has slammed us with some chilly nights that have caused some problems in your yards. This is what you need to do: ✻ Do frequent walk-arounds. Plants are stressed and more vulnerable to disease and insects. If you catch problems in the beginning, you have a better chance of getting them under control. Keep in mind, however, that the best treatment for most cold issues is time. Yes, your leaves got frozen. Yes, things are taking longer to get going because the soil is still too cold. There is nothing you can do about those things, so avert your eyes and give the plants time to heal. ✻ I mentioned insects, but please remember that you do not need to spray every single thing that crawls on your plants! Be sure that the bug is doing damage before you spray it. One customer wanted to kill the ladybugs on her tomato until I explained that one ladybug can clean all the aphids off a tomato plant in a single day. There are some good bugs! ✻ The cool, wet weather is a good breeding ground for fungus, so watch for it and begin treating at the first sign. Neem is a good starting point chemical, but some plants may require something stronger. ✻ You can prune the winter damage from shrubs now if you haven’t already. You can also cut back spent bulbs, the stalks of spring bloomers (iris, peonies, etc.) and annuals that are getting leggy. If you want to reduce the size of your spring blooming trees and shrubs, prune soon after they stop blooming so they have not set bud yet. ✻ Maintain your container plants. Most will need to be deadheaded, cut back, cleaned up (don’t let the spent blooms settle down into the container), and fertilized weekly. ✻ How are your vegetables? Many are off to a slow start because the soil has not warmed up enough. Be vigilant in watching for trouble in the form of insects and disease and treat before it gets out of hand. Splashing water is a quick way to spread disease, so always use soaker hoses or water at the base of the plant. Mulch will help. Call us if you have problems. ✻ Finally, don’t panic if you haven’t planted yet. There is still time! Now let’s talk about perennials, because June is perennial month! There are some things that you need to know if you are not used to growing perennials. First of all, many perennials do not have a long bloom time. The average is 4-6 weeks. This means that if you want consistent blooms, you’ll need to plant sequential bloomers. Start out your spring with creeping phlox, candy tuft, irises,

peonies, brunnera, and baptisia. Add summer bloomers such as daisies, lilies, phlox, purple coneflower, yarrow, bee balm, rudbeckia, and salvia. If your yard is shady, hostas, coral bells, and ferns will give you blooms and wonderful foliage color combinations. As we move into the fall, asters, mums, sedums, and some of the sages will continue the bloom show. Winter has hellebores to bloom in the gloom. Additional information about perennials: ✻ It takes them a while to get going. The third year is when most really start performing. ✻ If you have worked good compost or soil conditioner into your soil, most do not need fertilizing. ✻ After 3-5 years, you can divide and share. Research timing or give us a call, because some prefer spring division and some prefer fall. ✻ Most can be moved if they (or you) are unhappy with their location. Butterfly weed has a taproot and cannot be moved. ✻ Perennial does not mean forever. Some, like peonies, can live for decades. Others tend to start fading after a few years. ✻ There are a few that are toxic. If you have pets that like to nibble on your plants, please do some research!

I’m going to end by letting you know what is going on in the plant world. In short, it is absolute chaos. Annual and perennial supplies are dwindling, as are veggies. Tropical plants are done for the year. Trees and shrubs will be low in stock for the next few years, as they are a 3-5 year growing investment, and growers simply cannot keep up with demand. In addition, there are not enough trucks and drivers to move the plants. There is also a shortage of many bagged goods and chemicals. There isn’t a darn thing we can do about it, so I would appreciate it if you didn’t come in fussing at us as we are having a hard time too - thank you! That’s all for this month. The Iconic Burwell Building and the Curious Case of

The Human Fly Maud the Mule

N APRIL 7, 1918, spectators lined Gay Street to catch a glimpse of George G. Polley, a.k.a. The Original “Human Fly,” attempt a most spectacular stunt - climbing all 10 stories of the 1907 Burwell Building on Gay Street. The climb was in conjunction with the Great Liberty Parade, which was to take place right after the stunt. Polley planned to scale the outside walls by hanging on to crevices in the bricks, window ledges, cornices, and any other projection he could find. George Polley, a native of Richmond, Virginia, was born in 1897 and grew up a star athlete. His career originated at the age of 12 when a local businessman promised him a new suit if he would climb to the top of his building. Polley was triumphant and never looked back, becoming best known for his “buildering,” work as a vaudeville magician, and raising charitable contributions during World War I. After arriving in Knoxville on April 5, Polley secured a permit from the City of Knoxville to climb the Burwell Building. Two days later at 1:30 pm, “The Human Fly” began his climb, and within 30 minutes he had reached the top and proceeded to stand on his head with his feet extended over the edge of the roof before scaling the flagpole too! Five thousand people looked on in amazement. Known throughout the country as “The Human Fly” who risked his life countless times in spectacular climbing stunts, Polley never fell but part of his act was to pretend to slip or lose control. During World War I, he served as

an Army sergeant and became nationally known for raising funds for U.S. soldiers overseas, the Salvation Army, and many other charitable organizations here in the States. George Polley is said to have climbed more than 2,000 buildings throughout his short career. His greatest achievement might have been his daring attempt at climbing the Woolworth Building in New York City in 1920. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world at 792 feet. He made it to the 30th floor before being arrested for failing to secure a permit. Sadly, Polley died in 1927 during an operation to remove a brain tumor. The iconic Burwell Building was built in 1907 as the Knoxville Banking and Trust Building at the corner of Gay Street and Clinch Avenue. It was the tallest building in Knoxville at a height of 166 feet until 1913, when the Holston National Bank was built across the street. The building was designed by the architectural firm of Richards, McCarty, and Bulford of Columbus, Ohio, in the Second Renaissance Revival style. The Knoxville Banking and Trust Company ceased operations in 1912, and the Southern Railway Company established its main Knoxville ticket office in the building’s lobby. In 1917, the C.B. Atkin Realty Company purchased the building and renamed it “Burwell” in honor of Mrs. C.B. Atkin’s family name. Clay Brown Atkin (1864-1931), who at the time was one of Knoxville’s wealthiest citizens, also purchased land for the Tennessee Theatre and an expansion of the Burwell Building.

George G. Polley, a.k.a. “The Human Fly” Since the Burwell was not the tallest building in Knoxville at the time (Polley’s preferred climbing subject), he most likely was asked to scale the building at the request of C.B. Atkin to increase publicity and excitement for his new real estate ventures. “The Human Fly,” however, wasn’t the first to “scale” and stand atop the building. One of the essential members of the construction crew was a mule called Maud - named for a funny comic strip character that would kick someone high into the air at the end of each strip. After the iron work structure was completed on the building in 1907, Maud the Mule was hoisted to a platform at the top of the building to the cheers of thousands of onlookers! The next time you’re strolling down Gay Street, look up at the Burwell Building. Can you see George Polley swinging from a cornice or window sill? Can you see Maud the Mule being hoisted above the roof? We sure can!

He has made photographs in locations on six continents, from Mexico to Mauritius to Tasmania. His career in medical imaging technology brought him from Paris to Knoxville in 2004. He has published his work in several anthologies and has shown his work in exhibitions since his 2006 Knoxville premiere at the Emporium. Gautreau became a U.S. citizen in 2016 and lives in Knoxville with his wife, Julie. Simmerman: Mug Shots: A Motley Crew of Miscreants in the Display Case Excepts from his artist statement: Last summer I became fascinated with a treasure trove of images I discovered on a public domain site. Most of the photographs were from England, around the turn of the 20th century. Not only were the rough portraits intriguing - ranging from young and old, male and female - their descriptions of crimes committed were equally compelling. I could not help but ponder on whatever became of these wayward souls. Later, I expanded my research to other digital troves, unearthing several mug shots from Leavenworth, Kansas, and a few other federal prisons. The stories these individuals could tell - some tortured in mind, others genuinely penitent - captured my thoughts and reminded me that we all have redemption stories and human failings. His work is primarily mixed media: An alchemy of acrylic, watercolor, oil pastel, and ink often layered with “found” or hand-rendered type. Exploring the pairings of hand-drawn faces and intertextuality, he enjoys discovering many routes towards visual storytelling. Lynne Marinelli Ghenov: Evocation of Collections of Recollections on the North Wall Excerpts from her artist statement: I am interested in the infinite possibilities of elements, signs, and forms aligned within an existing structure’s finiteness. The gridded ledger and lined paper and the grounded presence of a permanent image from the pages of a book are akin to that of an actual interior space. For years, I worked three-dimensionally, almost as if I were drawing in the area, designating forms and material throughout. However, through graphite, colored pencil, marker, and pen, I have recreated the framework and the allocation of objects and patterns two-dimensionally. Works on paper have evolved to incorporate collage, rubbings, tracings, stencils, and more. There may be vintage paper or not, but always contained in them are pattern, images or signs of memory, and a logic of a child’s make-believe game. Ghenov was born in Philadelphia and currently lives and works in Knoxville. She holds a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Sculpture. Presently she primarily makes drawings on paper. Ghenov has nationally shown in various group and solo shows and is currently the associate at Loghaven Artist Residency in Knoxville. An Unlikely Training Ground interactions with people of all types, learning to understand, get along with, and communicate with others. I had no idea that would be of any value, it was just the job I did. I started my first outside sales role in my early 20s, and although it was not apparent to me at the time, all of that “training on the corner” had allowed me to be far more comfortable in dealing with people. In the sales and management roles that followed, I continued to realize how much of the “business basics” learned at that corner service station were applicable to my then current business role and still apply today. At a wedding in 2010, I ran into that service station owner from 25+ years ago. The first thing that came to mind was to let him know that the time I worked for them was a tremendous training ground that C A F F E RT Y prepared me for the “adult” business world. I owed him a big “thank you!” Accounting, management, and professional development courses certainly added to this, but looking back, the real-world experience and coaching I received was instrumental in allowing me to develop and be equipped for later professional roles. My reason for sharing this is to encourage those who may think that a first job, or a short-term job that may not seem relevant, could end up being a very important chapter in your life’s story. AS T WE EK I was speaking with the general manager of a local restaurant group. He’s in his 20s, and I asked about his background in preparation for his current job. In addition to his business degree, he spent several years working with Chick-fil-A, learning a great deal about customer service, being coached and coaching others, and the basics of business - all equipping him for the role he is in now. This conversation reminded me of all the lessons I learned at one my first jobs, where I had no idea of the importance and application of what I was learning until years later. The summer after high school, I started work at a family-owned, full-service Exxon station in Charlotte, NC. We pumped gas, cleaned windshields, checked the oil, and made service calls BY B R E T T to fix flat tires and start cars with dead batteries. After catching on to the basics, responsibilities were added, leading to oil changes and minor repairs, ordering parts, maintaining inventories, and handling money. At the time I thought nothing of it. But outside of the actual tasks of the job, it was an excellent education in learning about people. The business was located at the corner of a busy intersection, allowing contact with every type of person imaginable - business professionals, travelers asking for directions (long before GPS), young and old, wealthy and not. In a short amount of time, I had been involved in thousands of
