I T H J U N E co m e s w a r m e r w e a t h e r, longer days, no school, vacations (hopefully!), and Father’s Day. As we continue to get back to “normal,” friends and family are excited about spending more time together or may be excited about spending less time together if everyone has been working and schooling from home! My own father just announced that he would like our family to begin making a concerted effort to visit with each other more often - by phone, Zoom, or in person. A valid request after more than a year of little to no face-to-face contact! I am thankful that 1) He feels that way and 2) He is willing to voice it and ask for our cooperation. Over the years, my dad has grown into someone who is much more tuned in to his emotions - a big softy, if you will - and we couldn’t be more delighted with the transition. We all need to grow and evolve (hopefully!) as the years go by and

we are faced with unforeseen circumstances. I know that during the pandemic, instead of heading to the office each day, many dads ended up working from home. That was a major adjustment within itself; add in kids being around all the time and those dads had the “opportunity” to become more involved in their family’s daily activities. The realization of the family bond was put to the test and relationships were strengthened (hopefully!). Our feature story this month, The Lunchbox - a business that began as, and continues to be, a “family business” - is a testament to both transitioning dads and keeping up with family ties. Much better to be on this journey with family or with those in our lives who seem like they should be! So to all the dads out there, striving to be the best parents they can be, Bravo! Keep transitioning, and Happy Father’s Day. Thanks, Pop!

Creating and Continuing the Legacy of Knoxville’s Favorite Lunch Spot

oles

Foodservice was a natural - but how? I had no formal training, just instincts. There were very few restaurants in downtown Knoxville in 1980 and a large workforce of daytime-only professionals and office staff. Committed to being available for my children, I thought if I opened a small, lunch-only restaurant, I could be home on weekends and when they got home from school. I stumbled across a little building (across from the City County building) where the owners were very receptive to the idea of a restaurant. After readying the space, we printed 1,000 flyers to announce our concept and opening date and then delivered them to the offices within walking distance. Bringing pots and pans from home, having seating for only 24, no dishwasher or prep space, and three employees, we launched on June 7, 1981. We set a goal for sales on day one and exceeded it running out of everything!

In 1985, we expanded the building to 45 seats and later moved to our dream space (in one weekend and didn’t miss a day!) in the First Tennessee Plaza. With more than half of our business as take-out, we then established a central kitchen and Market/Café on Center Park Drive in the mid-1990s. This allowed us to prepare and deliver fresh food every day to our locations around town while enabling our customers to serve themselves - to eat in, to take back to their offices, to take home, or all three in one efficient stop!

VE RYON E LOVE S The Lunchbox! Everything Knoxville is honored to share the history, guiding principles and the exciting future of this beloved lunch spot that celebrates its 40th Anniversary in 2021. We were delighted to meet founder Karen Sproles recently and asked her to tell us how it all began. Here is Karen’s story:

Karen & Don Spr

In 1979, I found myself a single mom with two young daughters and had to come to grips with how I was going to support us. I have a degree in math education, but after a year of teaching, realized that it was not my joy or calling. Growing up in Wisconsin, surrounded by the influence of my grandmother and mother - the best natural cooks ever - caring for people with food had become a part of me.

Two weeks after opening, I met my future husband, Don Sproles. He endeared himself to my daughters and often showed up at The Lunchbox on Sunday afternoons when we were trying to get a jump on food for the week. Before long he was rolling up his sleeves and taking over at the cash register. We were married July 3, 1982, choosing that day so we’d have a three-day weekend for a “honeymoon.”

& Trish

My business philosophy is summed up in four words: Honesty, Service, Respect, and Accountability. We aimed to be much more than a sandwich; the goal was feel good food. My mantra to my new employees was always “Our customers have probably had a stressful morning. It’s our job to send them back to work feeling better than when they came in!” The Lunchbox is why I encourage others to “listen to your heart!” I was tracked to be a teacher - who knew cooking for people you care about could be a career? Everything Knoxville then had the opportunity to talk to current owners, Randy and Trish Holmes, who are committed to maintaining Karen’s business philosophy. The staff at all three locations sung their praises for continuing the tradition of The Lunchbox. The entire Holmes family have

Randy: The difference is “the formula hasn’t changed.” We have made sure to stay as true to Karen’s recipes as we can, which continue to be the heartbeat and foundation of The Lunchbox. We know it sounds simple, but there is a difference. Many designers underestimate the value of listening, hearing, and then acting on behalf of a client’s needs. Some of our projects are driven by a collection of images, some by a single “big-picture” idea. Some clients know exactly what they want, while others need help bringing their goals into focus. Since the process yields the result, we remain flexible, and we tailor our creative tools and leadership methods to the unique

A Moment of Kindness and a Recurring Smile

O

N E O F the most impor t ant aspec t s of volunteering at Random Acts of Flowers is that the volunteers get to spend their time doing something that can give a complete stranger a smile and an emotional boost. This not only occurs when a Random Acts of Flowers’ created bouquet is delivered to an individual in a healthcare facility, but, in addition, every time the recipient looks at the flowers during the next several days, they happily recall the personal moment of kindness that the flowers represent and have another emotional boost knowing someone cares for them. This recalled and recurring happiness not only positively impacts the recipient, but their family and friends, too! One of our recipient’s family members said: “I’ve known about Random Acts of Flowers for several years. Recently, my aunt, who is in an assisted living facility, received an arrangement from you - and it was the highlight of her week! Having this service affect one of my family members emphasized the importance of your work to me. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who share a little love and kindness to so many people that really benefit from a simple gesture.” It is these moments of kindness,

encouragement, and emotional support that propels and sustains our volunteers to work so hard and so happily collecting and preparing donated flowers, creating the individual bouquets, and delivering the re-purposed, upcycled bouquets to healthcare facilities. It is an effort that makes all of those involved in the process smile. Whether they are a Random Acts of Flowers volunteer, a recipient, or the recipient’s family and friends - everyone gets an emotional boost from the simple act of providing someone in a local

healthcare facility with recycled flowers and a moment of kindness! If you would like to support Random Acts of Flowers by becoming a volunteer, visit www.RAFKnoxville.org, click on the Volunteer tab, and complete the sign-up form. You will then attend a volunteer orientation to further inform you about our mission, teach you about donated flower prep, and how to create the individual bouquets. If you want to support our volunteers’ efforts to deliver re-purposed flowers and moments of kindness - and have your own recurring smile - please consider being a donor. You can make a donation on our website at ww.RAFKnoxville.org, call us at 865-633-9082, or send us an email at info@RAFKnoxville.org.

Knoxville Homeowners: The Five Most Common Home Security Mistakes

W

ITH SUMMER approaching, it is the perfect time to reevaluate the security of your property. If you are not properly securing your home, you could be increasing the chance of a home burglary. By acting now, you can easily avoid common home security mistakes to ensure your property is as safe as possible. 1. Leaving doors and windows unlocked Doors and windows serve as an easy entry point into your home when left unlocked. Whether you forgot to lock the backdoor or left a window open, you are making your home an easy target for a skilled burglar! 2. Hiding a spare key outside Still hide a key under the doormat to provide easy access for additional members of the household? Whether the key is under the doormat, hidden in a fake rock, or somewhere you think a burglar would never look, you are mistaken. Instead of hiding the spare key, leave it with a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member. Better yet, Smart Locks eliminate the need for keys, allowing you to take your home security above and beyond.

10

3. Providing cover for a burglar Burglars are sneaky; don’t make it easier for them by providing the perfect hiding spot. Take a walk around your property and look for areas that provide places to hide. Clear overgrown areas and keep trees and bushes near your home trimmed. 4. Leaving the garage door open Are you working in your yard all day? Did you forget to close the garage door after returning home? Not only does an open garage door provide easy access into your home, it also lets a burglar see what’s inside, potentially making your home the desired target. Most burglars pick a house after surveilling the neighborhood. Additionally, tools are most likely to be kept in the garage. Allowing easy access to these items can make a burglar’s job effortless! Keep tools and ladders locked away to prevent a burglar from using them to gain entry into your home. 5. Making it apparent that no one is home If you have to be away from your home for an extended period, follow the home security tips below: • Stop mail and newspaper delivery

• Have a neighbor park an extra vehicle in your driveway • Arrange for someone to cut the grass • Place interior and exterior lighting on a timer • Refrain from posting vacation pictures while you’re away These common home security mistakes are easy to fix and will help reduce the odds of a break-in. The best way to ensure the security of your home and family is with a reliable home security system. A home security system, installed and monitored by Fleenor Security, can easily be customized to fit your needs, providing you with the best security possible.

“There Was Absolutely No Dust!”

HEN TELLICO VILLAGE

resident Robert Ericson was asked about his experience using European Fine Hardwood Floors, he responded that he was totally satisfied with the refinishing work that they had performed in his home. His house was built in 2000 and originally had laminate flooring installed. Years later, Robert had the laminate replaced with pre-finished oak hardwood flooring. Unfortunately, the new flooring developed “cupping,” which was not covered by the flooring manufacture’s warranty. Robert was left with the choice of replacing the existing oak flooring or refinishing the flooring. In 2016, Robert decided to refinish, and he selected European Fine Hardwood Floors to perform the work. European Fine Hardwood Floors offers area homeowners a totally unique experience in hardwood floor refinishing. By combining the skills learned from European craftsmen with the latest technological advances available in the refinishing marketplace, they can easily restore your home’s hardwood floors to their original showroom quality look. If your home’s hardwood floors are faded, cupped, scratched, dented, and gouged, then European Fine Hardwood Floors can help. The first step for Robert was to contact

DOGGY VACATION!

European Fine Hardwood Floors to request his no-cost, no-obligation, in-home consultation. Robert also decided to change the stain color of his flooring, and the work was performed to his complete satisfaction. European Fine Hardwood Floors’ fully insured and bonded craftsmen also efficiently removed the dust resulting from the refinishing process outof-doors using high-volume hoses attached to high-capacity vacuums with HEPA filters, which remained outside Robert’s home. When asked if he was happy with the minimal amount of dust resulting from the refinishing project, Robert was quick to point out that the floor refinishing project

resulted in zero dust. “I wiped my hand across our dining room table adjacent to where the floors had been refinished,” said Robert. “There was absolutely no dust!” Recipient of the much-coveted Bona Certified Craftsman designation, this is your assurance that all work performed by European Fine Hardwood Floors is compliant with the standards set by the number one name and leader in the world’s refinishing marketplace: Bona. “I’m often hesitant to recommend contractors to friends and neighbors, but I’m not the least bit reluctant to recommend European Fine Hardwood Floors,” said Robert. “In fact, we just recommended them to friends who recently had worked performed by them and that are just as pleased as we were with their finished work.” Although the floors were refinished five years ago, they look as if they were refinished only yesterday.

us, vacations and holidays, including the 4th of July and Labor Day, are a time of celebrations. Your pets’ safety and happiness should be a continued priority while planning these events. Because ever yone is tempted to include their four-legged kids in their outings and vacations, Ms. C’s would like to offer some hazardous facts to take into consideration before you take your fur baby with you. Leaving your pets in the car alone, even if you park in a shaded area and are away for only a short time, spells danger. Car interiors can reach 120º even in the shade, so never leave your pet in the car. Even with the windows cracked, the heat index rises extremely quickly, potentially causing suffocation. Be a good pet parent by not risking your dog’s safety this summer. Loud noises and crowds at outdoor picnics make most pets nervous. Scared dogs can quickly develop into anxious, easily overheated dogs, especially in warmer weather. Dogs don’t perspire; they dispel body heat

by panting and through the pads of their feet. For overheated pets, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can result in brain damage and possibly death. Consider the comfort both emotional and temperature - of your dog before including them in your outings. To assure their safety, security, and happiness, give your pet his own “doggy vacation” at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits. Day camp is offered Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Outside play time, plus an air-conditioned private suite with fresh water available continuously, allows him time to relax and rejuvenate throughout the day. Summer overnight “camp” is filling up quickly! Ms. C’s takes reservations up to six months in advance, so call 865-986-6325 today or click the “book a reservation” tab on the website.

Need a Custom Closet? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself

A

R E YOU ALWAYS sor ting through the never-ending amount of garments you have hanging in your closet just to put together the single outfit you had in mind? Can’t find the pants to match the shirt? Or the shoes to match the pants? While life can be messy and disorganized, a closet should not be. Closets should make life easier. A custom closet that’s designed and organized based on your needs provides much more organization and maximizes storage space, which means less frustration. Tailored Living of Knoxville professionals will meet with you in your home, listen to your specific needs, and work with you to design a space that fits your everyday lifestyle. Here are some preliminary questions to ask yourself before calling for your in-home consultation: 1. How much space do I have to work with? This is the primary aspect to factor into your closet planning. Knowing how much space you have will help the professional Tailored Living designer determine the best organizational system for your closet.

Also consider ceiling height when you take inventory of the closet space. Making use of every inch can be important if you’re working with a small space. 2. What is my budget? While the cost really depends on the size of your closet, a basic system with hanging rod and shelves will cost less than including cabinets and drawers. Additionally, the finish color you choose will impact your budget. A white finish will always be less expensive than wood grains and darker finishes. 3. What types of clothing am I storing? Some people only want to hang shirts, blouses, and pants in their closet and leave other items such as undergarments stored in a bedroom dresser. Think about what types of clothing and accessories you want to store inside your closet and it will help you put together a picture of your organizational needs. 4. Which accessories and organizers do I need? Convenient accessories like jewelry drawers, fold-out ironing boards, tilt-out hampers, drawer organizers, and pullout belt racks are

among the many options that bring more order to the closet and help you easily find items. 5. What do you want to display for convenience? From ladies’ scarves to men’s ties, for multiple items of the same type of clothing there are closet organizers and designs that provide convenience and style. These are just a few ideas to keep in mind when thinking about your custom closet design. Once you have considered your budget, what you need to store, and the space you have, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet system with features built around you and your lifestyle!

Did You Notice This Proposed Tax Increase?

T

BY Y VO N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

HERE’S A LOT of press surrounding President Biden’s proposed personal tax increases to help pay for the American Families Plan, and it’s important to know which ones Yvonne Marsh, apply to you and your family. At CFP®, CPA the moment, these proposals are just that - and not final. Here are two potential tax increases that get a lot of press but probably won’t affect you: • Individuals with taxable income over $523,600 and couples over $628,300 would revert to a 39.6% top tax bracket from the current 37%. • Households with over $1 million in income would see the base tax rate on capital gains and qualified dividends increase from 20% to 39.6%. This type of income would continue to be subject to the 3.8% net investment income tax. But there is a third proposed change based on assets rather than income that I find the most compelling to watch and which will, arguably, affect more people: • The elimination of the step-up in basis for inherited non-retirement assets. Currently, if you buy a share of stock and sell it for a profit, you pay capital gains tax on the profit. Or if you never sold it and passed the stock to your heirs, the entire embedded gain goes away - your heir escapes taxation. But under this new proposal, death is treated like a sale, and your heirs would have to recognize the capital gain you never did. This would apply to non-retirement investment accounts, vacation homes, rental property, family businesses, farms, etc. This rule has a $1 million exemption, so that helps lessen the impact for many households. Keep your eye on the expiration of the current personal tax rates, which are already legislated to expire in 2025. Taxes will never be cheaper than they are right now, and multi-year systematic Roth conversion strategies should be an integral part of your tax planning between now and then. Needless to say, proactive tax planning will continue to be imperative under these constantly shifting sands of the tax code! Join me June 15th on Zoom to learn more. emotions have ruled us during the last 15 months. From having to close the store and not knowing if we would have a business in the aftermath, to having the busiest year we’ve ever recorded. Sorrow, loss, frustration, exhaustion, and isolation have given way to hope and gratitude. When our doors reopened, you came back! And many visited us for the first time! An earnest and heartfelt thanks to those who have supported small businesses in our community. Whether shopping in a small boutique like ours or eating at a local restaurant like our neighbor Big Kahuna Wings, your support of local businesses has made a difference for so many. Owners, staff, and suppliers alike appreciate your patronage more than can be said. Your generous patience, as we continue to suffer through supply chain issues, is another thing for which we are grateful. You’ve come back time and again to see what’s new. You’ve waited for framing supplies, sometimes weeks long, without complaint! You’ve been there with us every step of the way. We’ve laughed, commiserated, and persevered - masks and all.

Beat the Heat This Summer with a Home Water Filtration System! BY D AV I D B R E W S T E R , O W N E R O F A Q U A C L E A R WAT E R S YS T E M S , L LC

S

UMMER HAS arrived! Most of America is cleaning out their closets, welcoming the pool and lake days, and spending more time in their backyard relaxing with friends and family. On hot, humid summer days, the most satisfying thing I can think of is an ice-cold glass of water! But often in our homes, the water can taste or smell, especially in East Tennessee. Some common complaints I often hear are a metallic taste or a rotten egg smell. No one wants to be drinking bad water on a hot, summer day! We at Aqua Clear Water Systems can provide you with that pure, tasty water you crave after mowing the lawn or being outside with your kids. What’s the solution, you ask? A Whole-Home Water Filtration System! Not only will it increase your home’s value, but it will also give you the water you’ve been dreaming of. In the last year, we’ve spent more time at home than ever before, which means you’ve been drinking your home’s water in copious amounts. So, we’d like to give you 5 reasons why a Kinetico Water System is the key to your summer water woes. 1. Improved Water Quality, Taste & Odor. East Tennessee’s water is known for its hardness, as well as chlorine, iron, sediment, and

ur See o

IAL SPEC R OFFEthing

rs very for E ille reade v e Knoxour articl in

other harmful contaminants polluting the water. A whole house Kinetico water filtration system can remove all of these contaminants to give you tasteless, odorless, and silky feeling soft water throughout your home. 2. Improved Life of Appliances & Fixtures. A system will protect your home from damages caused by a variety of water contaminants! You could be extending the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, pipes, refrigerator, and more by installing a Kinetico water system, because reducing the build-up in these appliances allows them to work efficiently. 3. Increased Value of Your Home. With the housing market booming, we’d love to help you get a bigger bang for your buck when selling. An article titled 10 Upgrades That Increase Home Values by Forbes stated “this amenity will pay off now and in the future when it’s time to sell.” 4. Improved Health. Chlorine is a harmful chemical used to treat bacteria in water. While it’s necessary to kill bacteria, chlorine can’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. When you shower in chlorinated tap water, your skin absorbs the chlorine like a sponge, leaving your health at risk. To name

a few, high amounts of chlorine can cause breathing and lung problems, as well as cancer from THMs agents. Filtering your water could save you from unnecessary illnesses. 5. Improved Skin & Hair. A whole house filtration system reduces the amount of build-up on your appliances, as well as your skin and hair. Who wouldn’t want that? Softened water results in brighter skin, shinier hair, and longer-lasting clothes. Now that you know the benefits of installing a whole-home filtration system, we’d love the opportunity to help you improve your home in 2021 by doing an in-person or virtual free water health check-up. We’ll come to your house for FREE or connect via Zoom. It’s your choice! For Everything Knoxville readers only, we’re offering an exclusive designer faucet in the color of your choice ($195 value) and $200 off when you purchase a system before June 30, 2021. Give us a call or text today, and become a part of the ACWS family!

L I K E - M I N D E D philosophy among employees is key within any business - even more so when the mission involves design. The expanding team at Closets by McKenry/Designer Garages not only shares a compatible vision of the importance of home organization, but they also enjoy growing and learning from one another’s wealth of experience. Learn more about the designers who work alongside Chris McKenry in the first of this special series on the Closets by McKenry/ Designer Garages staff. After expanding Closets by McKenry in Knoxville to include a showroom and second business, Designer Garages, Chris McKenry knew it was time to add to his team. “Not that long ago I did all the designs and loved it,” said Chris. “But as the business grew, I needed help. I knew I wanted unique individuals to be on our design team.” He found them in Cesar Rivera and Robin Carbaugh. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Florida, Cesar Rivera’s background involves a fascinating mix of design… and dance! Along with being an acclaimed dance performer and instructor, Cesar has also earned his Associate degree in Drafting and a certification in Interior Design. Before coming to East Tennessee, he worked with contractors and interior designers as a manager of a title company. Chris related, “I loved the fact that Cesar has a musical theater/dance background. ROBIN CARBAUGH

Cesar designs everything from individual closets to storage for the entire house including garages and epoxy floor finishes. “Organization does not mean perfection, but I design for looks and function. Clutter is like visual noise, often crowding out the space that we need to move ourselves forward.” Robin Carbaugh, an accomplished photographer who minored in art at MTSU, has called Knoxville home for the past 26 years. Robin and her husband, Travis, owned a custom organization business for 15 years, and one of their industry peers and biggest supporters was Chris McKenry. “I have always been impressed with Robin’s professionalism and her design work,” said Chris. “When I returned to Knoxville and started this business we reconnected, and during the height of the pandemic, she reached out and quickly took to our design program.” Customer service is Robin’s specialty,

and she enjoys giving “300%” to her clients. “An organized home can lead to an organized life,” she said. “An organized life saves time and gives you some peace of mind. The investment pays you back in dividends… time is precious and our most valuable commodity.” Said Chris of his talented design team, “We all enjoy the connection we have with our clients, as it helps to understand their goals as we design their spaces. To have a beautifully organized home is a luxury that is possible for everyone - and brings quality of life.” Chris looks forward to introducing the rest of his experienced staff in future articles. Come meet them in person at the Closets by McKenry/Designer Garages showroom, and let them work their magic for you!

T

HE BLUES . Rock. Mystique. Intrigue. Other worldliness. Ubercoolness. All these words come to mind when one hears the name Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. He founded and has been in ZZ Top for more than 50 years. I first had the privilege of interviewing Billy Gibbons a little over four years ago (November 2016). He has a new solo project out, Hardware, and I recently interviewed him about it. As to how he had been handling the pandemic, Gibbons said: “Well, it’s been a very unusual succession of ‘Taco Tuesdays.’ The ‘BFG Three’ (Billy F. Gibbons) trio followed Matt “Big Beat” Sorum - who led us 20 miles overland into within shifting sands through California’s high desert, near the famed outpost in Joshua Tree, which found us making a discovery of a recording studio. We got there just to check things out and ended up staying for three months!” Hardware is Gibbons’ third solo album. I asked how this one was different for him to put together than the other two and the ZZ Top albums. “This new outing can be thought of as a continuing excursion into the unknown,” he said. “Lending ourselves to the creative energies of the desert found days turning into nights and back into day. It was the elegance of losing track of time to some extent. And, as the sessions in the studio began to unfold, the approach turned quite ecumenical. The first BFG solo album was aimed toward the sounds of Havana. The second release was all about the blues, and this most recent, Hardware, is anybody’s guess. I mean, we have surf guitar blending into western film themes. Talk about something of a departure! Surf music in the middle of a bone-dry desert!?!? Go figure!” When asked which song he would point to as a calling card on Hardware, Gibbons answered: “That might be somewhat difficult to answer right off the bat. However, I suspect we should start at the beginning. Side one, track one is ‘West Coast Junkie’, and no, it’s not about hard drugs but rather our ‘jones’ for the California experience. We dig the surf and the sand and whatever’s in between. The lyric is somewhat autobiographical: ‘I’m a West Coast junkie from a Texas town, and when I get to Cali it’s gonna go down,’ and ‘gettin’ down’ became

the order of the hour!” “Desert High,” another song on Hardware, has a very Jim Morrison-esque vibe to it. I asked Gibbons about the story behind it. “It’s the album closer and something of a collection of verse with a prose-like tone with, of course, references to ‘the Lizard King.’ The song paints a mind picture deeply inspired by the desolation of the desert. The Mojave really holds a place of mystery and intrigue, and it inspired us to sum things up in a way not dissimilar to maybe a theme for some western film. “Our pre-ZZ band, The Moving Sidewalks, actually shared performance bills with the Doors, so there’s a personal connection in it as well. Similarly with Gram Parsons, also referenced in the delivery. We met Gram while admiring a vintage touring bus parked in front of a theater when he came over to chat about it. We thought he might have been the driver, but he introduced himself as ‘Gram’ and being in the band. We knew we had met the man himself.” One of the songs on the album is “Stackin’ Bones” - a duet with multi-instrumentalist sister group, Larkin Poe. Why them and why that song? “Well, they’re just so talented and different, aren’t they?!? We met them through Tyler Bryant, with whom we toured. Rebecca and Megan found their way to quite a few backstage sections at ZZ shows, so we asked Tyler who they were. Turns out Tyler’s married to Rebecca. We then heard them play at a sound check, and

we were immediately taken aback. If there was going to be any guest musician on this album, it just had to be Larkin Poe, and the collaboration with us is sturdy propulsive, isn’t it?” And what are the good reverend’s post pandemic plans? “Gonna get out there with both ZZ Top and our BFG outfit as soon as the coast is clear,” said Gibbons. “It’s way time to turn it up and play some loud sounds. As the scheduling returns, live entertainment dates with Matt Sorum, Austin Hanks, and yours truly from the Hardware sessions will be hitting the deck!” What does Gibbons hope his legacy is? “‘He came in, he strapped up, he plugged in, he turned it up, he rocked out.’ Seems like a legacy of substance, no?” Yes, it most certainly does. The slightly longer version of this interview along with video and website links can be found at www.boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Take Salad Season to the Next Level C O U RT E S Y O F F F E

Kickin’ Chicken Tostadas Prep time: 30 minutes Total time: 35 minutes Servings: 6

ARMER MONTHS typically call for lighter bites, and one of the first things that comes to mind for many is a fresh and flavorful salad. While a salad is a quick and easy way to up your veggie intake and get food on the table in next to no time, the same formula over and over again can make mealtimes feel a little mundane. To take your salads to the next level, think of those greens as a blank slate for creativity and look beyond the bowl for elements that can help create new, satisfying meals. For example, Fresh Express Chopped Salad Kits are tasty and versatile salad mixtures with premium ingredients that can also be eaten as sides with your favorite protein or used as toppers for favorites like pizza and tostadas to help kick mealtime up a notch. All their salads are thoroughly washed, rinsed, and gently dried then sealed in keep-crisp bags for long-lasting freshness. These easy Kickin’ Chicken Tostadas are made using the Kickin’ Bacon Ranch Chopped Kit, which includes garden fresh cabbage, green leaf lettuces, carrots, green onions, tortilla strips, uncured bacon bits, and some heat from jalapeno ranch dressing. Just add the salad mixture to tostada shells topped with salsa verde chicken and avocado for a super easy meal with a wonderful flavorful combination. Or for a tasty twist on traditional favorites like pizza and burgers, try this Thousand Island Burger Pizza using the Bacon Thousand Island Chopped Kit - a combination of iceberg and green leaf lettuces, uncured bacon bits, Parmesan cheese crisps, honey butter cornbread crisps, and creamy Thousand Island dressing - to bring sweet and savory flavors together with beef and cheese on top of a yummy pizza crust. Starting with the salad kits gives meals all the flavors without the additional chopping prep and the need to round up spices and seasonings because it’s all been done for you. So whether your meal will include animal proteins or whether you’re keeping the meal vegetarian, begin with a store-bought salad kit and think outside the “bag!” Find more ideas to elevate salad season at www.freshexpress.com.

Remove chicken, reserving 1/2 cup salsa verde; shred with two forks. Toss with reserved salsa verde. Place salad from kit in large bowl; toss with half the salad dressing from kit. Add toppings from kit; toss to combine. Divide salad evenly among tostada shells. Top each salad with chicken and avocado; drizzle with remaining dressing.

Walker Evans Photography at UT Downtown Gallery

F

OR THE months of June and July, the UT Downtown Gallery will be exhibiting photography from the Ewing Gallery permanent collection by Walker Evans. 80 years ago, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was published. To commemorate the anniversary of this text by author and Knoxville native, James Agee, the gallery is exhibiting photographs by Walker Evans that accompany that text. Walker Evans’ photographs paired with James Agee’s classic work, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, served as the culmination of Evans’ talents, as well as the realistic portrayal of the impoverished conditions of the American tenant farmer during the 1930s during the Great Depression. Walker Evans’ images revolutionized the standards of documentary photography. Let Us Now Praise Famous Men grew out of an assignment that Agee and Evans accepted to produce a Fortune magazine article on the conditions among sharecropper families in the American South during the “Dust Bowl.” It was the time of U.S.

President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” programs designed to help the poorest segments of the society. Agee and Evans spent eight weeks that summer researching their assignment, mainly among three white sharecropping families mired in desperate poverty. They returned with Evans’ portfolio of stark images— of families with gaunt faces, adults and children huddled in bare shacks with dusty yards in the Depressionera deep south. This exhibition includes 50 framed photographs printed by the Library of Congress from Evans’ original negatives.

Opening Reception Friday, June 4, from 5 - 8 pm during First Friday UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay Street, Knoxville TN 37902 Regular gallery hours: Wednesday - Friday 11 am - 6 pm Saturday 10 am - 3 pm June 202 1

Reclaim Your Tile & Grout Floors

I

BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM, C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

F YOUR FLOORS are dingy no matter how much you clean them, we can help! Did you know that the more often you clean your tile and grout floors, the dingier and dirtier they appear? Over time, dirt and contaminants are absorbed into the porous surfaces of your floor. Cleaning chemicals often have the same effect. Your floor acts as a sponge and absorbs all sorts of foreign matter and locks it deep within where no amount of scrubbing will help its appearance. The unsuspecting homeowner will often try all sorts of cleaning chemicals in hopes of success, all the while making it worse. Sadly, traditional cleaning methods simply are not able to extract the grime that is embedded in your surfaces. If you are wondering how dirty your floors really are, simply compare the grout in an unused corner to the rest of the floor. You may be shocked. It takes a three-step process to extract the grime embedded below the surface. High heat opens the pores in your floor. Powerful suction draws the dirt out to be whisked away. High pressure and a quality emulsifier are also needed to complete the process of removing all the junk below the surface. ONLY the perfect combination of heat, extraction, and pressure will be effective. Many homeowners opt to have their newly cleaned floors sealed. Surface Doc’s sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors, tile and grout, and concrete. The sealer’s molecules penetrate deep within and bond permanently together, creating a deep barrier of protection. John and his crew are experts at cleaning inside and out. They can tackle the biggest jobs, from kitchens and bathrooms to the driveway, pool, and deck. Surface Doc has become the leader in this area for hard surface restoration, as well as carpet restoration. The estimate is free, and the service is affordable and effective. Disease-Resistant Basil: New Varieties Bring Hope in the Fight Against Downy Mildew BY H O L LY J O N E S , H O RT I C U LT U R I S T, U T G A R D E N S , K N OX V I L L E

H

AVE YOU NOTICE D your sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) plants suffering from diseased leaves and stems in recent years? If so, the chances are good that basil downy mildew (Peronospora belbahrii) is the culprit. This fungus-like pathogen has been plaguing farmers and home gardeners since it was identified in the U.S. in 2007. Thankfully, scientists, farmers, and home gardeners now have science-based tools and advice we can put to use to save our basil. One of the most exciting developments has been the recent release of downy mildew resistant (DMR) varieties. At least six new varieties from multiple independent breeding programs have become commercially available in the past few years. So far, they are all pretty promising. From Rutgers University we have ‘Devotion,’ ‘Obsession,’ ‘Passion,’ and ‘Thunderstruck.’ Notice a theme here? They are all named in honor of the Italian tradition associating basil with love. Other varieties are also available. The retail supplier Johnny’s Selected Seeds is marketing Prospera® from an Israeli breeder, and the Proven Winners brand has trademarked Amazel Basil® from the University of Florida. While choosing a resistant cultivar is a key part of a pest management strategy, it is not a silver bullet. Resistance does not guarantee complete immunity, so it is best to cover all the angles when trying to prevent this disease. Start with disease-free seeds or plants from a reputable source, provide optimum growing conditions, and learn to recognize disease symptoms so you can remove infected plants as soon as possible. Cultural controls (i.e. providing an ideal environment) are important because they help keep the plants healthy, as well as discourage the establishment of pests and diseases. Basil is a warm-season annual that grows best in full sun with fertile soil that is moist but well drained. If possible, water at the soil level rather than overhead. Keeping the leaves as dry as possible and providing good air circulation will create a less hospitable place for downy mildew to flourish. Chemical controls such as organic and conventional fungicides can be effective if applied regularly. For up to date fungicide recommendations and more

June 202 1

Amazel Basil® is a promising variety in the fight against basil downy mildew. detailed information on the disease, refer to the Cornell University publication Basil Downy Mildew at www.cornell.edu. The main symptoms to watch for are yellowing leaves beginning toward the bottom of the plant, fuzzy gray spores on the undersides of the leaves, angular black spots and disfiguration on the leaves, and leaf drop. If you see these characteristic signs developing, you should harvest the entire plant. The healthy leaves are still safe to eat, and removing the plant will prevent the disease from spreading to other basil plants. Though the DMR-resistant varieties may develop the disease eventually, they generally stay healthy longer than traditional varieties, which means the grower can harvest basil for a longer period of time. If you are open to a broader flavor palette, you can also opt to grow some of the less common basil varieties like ‘Sweet Dani Lemon,’ ‘African Blue Holy,’ ‘Spicy Globe,’ and ‘Purple Ruffle.’ These varieties, as well as a handful of other licorice- and

lemon-flavored types, showed good resistance to downy mildew during a 2018 basil trial at UT Gardens, Jackson. At the UT Gardens Kitchen Garden in Knoxville, we have grown Amazel Basil,® as well as ‘Devotion’ and ‘Obsession’ with decent results. Amazel Basil® showed no signs of downy mildew in 2019 but did develop symptoms towards the end of the season in 2020. All three of these varieties will be on display for the 2021 growing season. The UT Gardens sites in Jackson and Crossville have successfully grown Amazel Basil® with no signs of the disease.

The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. June in the Garden BY L I S A G R U G I N

MOTHER NATURE

is taking her own sweet time warming up this year and has slammed us with some chilly nights that have caused some problems in your yards. This is what you need to do: ✻ Do frequent walk-arounds. Plants are stressed and more vulnerable to disease and insects. If you catch problems in the beginning, you have a better chance of getting them under control. Keep in mind, however, that the best treatment for most cold issues is time. Yes, your leaves got frozen. Yes, things are taking longer to get going because the soil is still too cold. There is nothing you can do about those things, so avert your eyes and give the plants time to heal. ✻ I mentioned insects, but please remember that you do not need to spray every single thing that crawls on your plants! Be sure that the bug is doing damage before you spray it. One customer wanted to kill the ladybugs on her tomato until I explained that one ladybug can clean all the aphids off a tomato plant in a single day. There are some good bugs! ✻ The cool, wet weather is a good breeding ground for fungus, so watch for it and begin treating at the first sign. Neem is a good starting point chemical, but some plants may require something stronger. ✻ You can prune the winter damage from shrubs now if you haven’t already. You can also cut back spent bulbs, the stalks of spring bloomers (iris, peonies, etc.) and annuals that are getting leggy. If you want to reduce the size of your spring blooming trees and shrubs, prune soon after they stop blooming so they have not set bud yet. ✻ Maintain your container plants. Most will need to be deadheaded, cut back, cleaned up (don’t let the spent blooms settle down into the container), and fertilized weekly. ✻ How are your vegetables? Many are off to a slow start because the soil has not warmed up enough. Be vigilant in watching for trouble in the form of insects and disease and treat before it gets out of hand. Splashing water is a quick way to spread disease, so always use soaker hoses or water at the base of the plant. Mulch will help. Call us if you have problems. ✻ Finally, don’t panic if you haven’t planted yet. There is still time! Now let’s talk about perennials, because June is perennial month! There are some things that you need to know if you are not used to growing perennials. First of all, many perennials do not have a long bloom time. The average is 4-6 weeks. This means that if you want consistent blooms, you’ll need to plant sequential bloomers. Start out your spring with creeping phlox, candy tuft, irises,

peonies, brunnera, and baptisia. Add summer bloomers such as daisies, lilies, phlox, purple coneflower, yarrow, bee balm, rudbeckia, and salvia. If your yard is shady, hostas, coral bells, and ferns will give you blooms and wonderful foliage color combinations. As we move into the fall, asters, mums, sedums, and some of the sages will continue the bloom show. Winter has hellebores to bloom in the gloom. Additional information about perennials: ✻ It takes them a while to get going. The third year is when most really start performing. ✻ If you have worked good compost or soil conditioner into your soil, most do not need fertilizing. ✻ After 3-5 years, you can divide and share. Research timing or give us a call, because some prefer spring division and some prefer fall. ✻ Most can be moved if they (or you) are unhappy with their location. Butterfly weed has a taproot and cannot be moved. ✻ Perennial does not mean forever. Some, like peonies, can live for decades. Others tend to start fading after a few years. ✻ There are a few that are toxic. If you have pets that like to nibble on your plants, please do some research!

I’m going to end by letting you know what is going on in the plant world. In short, it is absolute chaos. Annual and perennial supplies are dwindling, as are veggies. Tropical plants are done for the year. Trees and shrubs will be low in stock for the next few years, as they are a 3-5 year growing investment, and growers simply cannot keep up with demand. In addition, there are not enough trucks and drivers to move the plants. There is also a shortage of many bagged goods and chemicals. There isn’t a darn thing we can do about it, so I would appreciate it if you didn’t come in fussing at us as we are having a hard time too - thank you! That’s all for this month. Let’s all hope for a peaceful summer!

The Iconic Burwell Building and the Curious Case of

The Human Fly Maud the Mule

O

N APRIL 7, 1918, spectators lined Gay Street to catch a glimpse of George G. Polley, a.k.a. The Original “Human Fly,” attempt a most spectacular stunt - climbing all 10 stories of the 1907 Burwell Building on Gay Street. The climb was in conjunction with the Great Liberty Parade, which was to take place right after the stunt. Polley planned to scale the outside walls by hanging on to crevices in the bricks, window ledges, cornices, and any other projection he could find. George Polley, a native of Richmond, Virginia, was born in 1897 and grew up a star athlete. His career originated at the age of 12 when a local businessman promised him a new suit if he would climb to the top of his building. Polley was triumphant and never looked back, becoming best known for his “buildering,” work as a vaudeville magician, and raising charitable contributions during World War I. After arriving in Knoxville on April 5, Polley secured a permit from the City of Knoxville to climb the Burwell Building. Two days later at 1:30 pm, “The Human Fly” began his climb, and within 30 minutes he had reached the top and proceeded to stand on his head with his feet extended over the edge of the roof before scaling the flagpole too! Five thousand people looked on in amazement. Known throughout the country as “The Human Fly” who risked his life countless times in spectacular climbing stunts, Polley never fell but part of his act was to pretend to slip or lose control. During World War I, he served as

an Army sergeant and became nationally known for raising funds for U.S. soldiers overseas, the Salvation Army, and many other charitable organizations here in the States. George Polley is said to have climbed more than 2,000 buildings throughout his short career. His greatest achievement might have been his daring attempt at climbing the Woolworth Building in New York City in 1920. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world at 792 feet. He made it to the 30th floor before being arrested for failing to secure a permit. Sadly, Polley died in 1927 during an operation to remove a brain tumor. The iconic Burwell Building was built in 1907 as the Knoxville Banking and Trust Building at the corner of Gay Street and Clinch Avenue. It was the tallest building in Knoxville at a height of 166 feet until 1913, when the Holston National Bank was built across the street. The building was designed by the architectural firm of Richards, McCarty, and Bulford of Columbus, Ohio, in the Second Renaissance Revival style. The Knoxville Banking and Trust Company ceased operations in 1912, and the Southern Railway Company established its main Knoxville ticket office in the building’s lobby. In 1917, the C.B. Atkin Realty Company purchased the building and renamed it “Burwell” in honor of Mrs. C.B. Atkin’s family name. Clay Brown Atkin (1864-1931), who at the time was one of Knoxville’s wealthiest citizens, also purchased land for the Tennessee Theatre and an expansion of the Burwell Building.

George G. Polley, a.k.a. “The Human Fly” Since the Burwell was not the tallest building in Knoxville at the time (Polley’s preferred climbing subject), he most likely was asked to scale the building at the request of C.B. Atkin to increase publicity and excitement for his new real estate ventures. “The Human Fly,” however, wasn’t the first to “scale” and stand atop the building. One of the essential members of the construction crew was a mule called Maud - named for a funny comic strip character that would kick someone high into the air at the end of each strip. After the iron work structure was completed on the building in 1907, Maud the Mule was hoisted to a platform at the top of the building to the cheers of thousands of onlookers! The next time you’re strolling down Gay Street, look up at the Burwell Building. Can you see George Polley swinging from a cornice or window sill? Can you see Maud the Mule being hoisted above the roof? We sure can!

ARDENING ENTHUSIASM

is surging thanks to our increased time at home - whether on a smallspace patio or in a larger backyard. In fact, people spent 42% more time gardening in 2020 than the year before, according to Axiom Marketing’s 2021 Gardening Insight Survey, and it is estimated the pandemic contributed to creating nearly 20 million new “gardeners.” Many experts agree the trend toward nurturing flowers, plants, and vegetables will continue into 2021 and beyond. If you’re looking to test your new green thumb or bring this year’s garden to the next level, consider these top trends and simple ideas from the experts at Ball Horticultural Company: The year-round fresh and healthy garden Gardening can provide fresh access to produce that can help encourage healthy eating. You can feel confident knowing exactly where your food comes from and enjoy the satisfaction of growing it yourself. Plus, it doesn’t get fresher than picking something from your own garden just minutes before preparing a dish. You don’t need an expansive garden to enjoy the many benefits of fresh, healthy vegetables and herbs. In fact, you don’t need a garden at all! Check out Kitchen Minis from PanAmerican Seed® and enjoy a variety of peppers and tomatoes that can be grown inside on a sunny windowsill, countertop, or outside as patio tabletop plants. You can grow and harvest your own Kitchen Minis flavors most of the year.

The multi-purpose flower and herb garden Don’t be afraid to mix your flowers and herbs. Trending in 2021 is bundling your plants together to save space and make a multi-functional showcase. Start with a tiered fruit stand, line it with coco liner cut to fit inside each bowl space, and then add soil and plants of your choice. The handle and lightness of the stand make it easy to hang as a basket or decorate a patio or table for a beautiful and functional addition wherever you garden. Be sure to select plants that have a lot to offer in a compact space. For example, herbs from Burpee Plants are ideal for small gardens, so you can enjoy fresh flavors like mint, rosemary, and parsley at a moment’s notice. If you’d prefer a centerpiece or accent decor for entertaining, petunias from Wave® Petunias are low-maintenance and stunning, easily adding a punch of color to your container. The beautiful garden for a bold and colorful outdoor living space As people spend more time enjoying the outdoors from the safety and comforts of home, they are taking a new look at their exterior spaces. Colorful blooms brighten the outdoors and elevate the mood, which is why flower gardening is flourishing. However, people want this outdoor beauty without extensive maintenance, so ease is essential when planning your flower garden. When it comes to pairing beauty and simplicity, Beacon® Impatiens are a great choice, especially for those whose outdoor spaces don’t get a lot of sun. Available in bright, bold colors, you can fill baskets, window boxes, patio containers, and shade landscapes with

Beacon to add vivid, dramatic color to your spaces and have confidence in their performance. These impatiens are low-maintenance and have high resistance to Impatiens downy mildew, a disease that has caused plant loss in recent years. The fun family-friendly garden Having a family garden comes with many benefits. Whether it’s you and your partner at home or the entire family, gardening has proven to be a fun and safe hobby that people of all ages can do together. Enjoy spending quality time while breathing fresh air and learning important lessons from nature and the environment. Gather everyone’s input on a plan for your family garden and work together as a team to make it a success. One plant that’s particularly fun for families to include is Lavender Primavera from Darwin Perennials. The rich purple color is visually stunning, plus lavender attracts pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, so you’re enhancing the natural world around you. Additionally, you’re sure to enjoy the relaxing scent wafting in the breeze, and you can harvest your lavender to use in DIY craft projects around the house or as gifts to loved ones. Start growing today The ability to explore interests like gardening and plant care is a silver lining of spending more time at home. Gardening is a healthy activity for anyone, and there are many resources - from your local gardening store (see Meadow View article on page 39) to online blogs and videos - to help you be successful. 2021 is your chance to dig in and grow!

Center New Exhibitions Opening Emporium June 4

T

HE ARTS & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at The Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from June 4-25. A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, June 4, from 5 to 8 pm. All visitors are required to wear a mask and maintain physical distancing guidelines. Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or the online shop at www.knoxalliance.store. On the Road in Tennessee by Jacques Gautreau in the Lower Gallery In this new exhibition of color photographs, Jacques Gautreau displays his ongoing project exploring the cultural landscape of Tennessee: “A recurrent road trip radiating from the place I live, taking me to uncertain destinations within the state lines.” Gautreau began his career in photography as a teenager growing up near Angers, France. He has made photographs in locations on six continents, from Mexico to Mauritius to Tasmania. His career in medical imaging technology brought him from Paris to Knoxville in 2004. He has published his work in several anthologies and has shown his work in exhibitions since his 2006 Knoxville premiere at the Emporium. Gautreau became a U.S. citizen in 2016 and lives in Knoxville with his wife, Julie. Dogwood Arts: Regional Art Exhibition in the Upper Gallery Dogwood Arts is thrilled to announce the return of their Regional Art Exhibition, the first in-person art exhibition the organization has hosted since March 2020. The Regional Art Exhibition showcases fine art of all styles and genres from progressive and emerging artists within a seven-state radius. Althea Murphy-Price, Associate Professor of Printmaking with the University of Tennessee Many-Worlds by Kelly Hider School of Art, will jury the exhi(2019 Regional Art Exhibition) bition and award cash prizes totaling $2,000 at the opening reception on June 4. The 2021 exhibition features artworks completed in the last two years by artists 18 years of age and older. Dogwood Arts has a 65-year history of arts advocacy, environmental stewardship, and economic impact in East Tennessee. With the financial support of corporate sponsors, grant funding, local government investment, and private donors, they produce 20 yearround events and programs that help make Knoxville a great place to live, work, and play. Kara Lockmiller: Pop Music in the Atrium Artist statement: I am a chromesthete, which means I see a vast array of real colors in my mind when I listen to music. I think of it as my own personal light show. My goal for each portrait is to let you glimpse music and musicians the way I do. There is a kinship between color and music - both can say what words cannot. A Knoxville resident since birth, Lockmiller paints in shadowed hues using the grisaille technique. After

sketching out a musician in a grayscale underpainting, she adds colors according to what she sees when listening to their music. A journalist and graphic artist for more than a decade, she retains a great understanding of design principles as they relate to color. S.K. Simmerman: Mug Shots: A Motley Crew of Miscreants in the Display Case Excepts from his artist statement: Last summer I became fascinated with a treasure trove of images I discovered on a public domain site. Most of the photographs were from England, around the turn of the 20th century. Not only were the rough portraits intriguing - ranging from young and old, male and female - their descriptions of crimes committed were equally compelling. I could not help but ponder on whatever became of these wayward souls. Later, I expanded my research to other digital troves, unearthing several mug shots from Leavenworth, Kansas, and a few other federal prisons. The stories these individuals could tell - some tortured in mind, others genuinely penitent - captured my thoughts and reminded me that we all have redemption stories and human failings. His work is primarily mixed media: An alchemy of acrylic, watercolor, oil pastel, and ink often layered with “found” or hand-rendered type. Exploring the pairings of hand-drawn faces and intertextuality, he enjoys discovering many routes towards visual storytelling. Lynne Marinelli Ghenov: Evocation of Collections of Recollections on the North Wall Excerpts from her artist statement: I am interested in the infinite possibilities of elements, signs, and forms aligned within an existing structure’s finiteness. The gridded ledger and lined paper and the grounded presence of a permanent image from the pages of a book are akin to that of an actual interior space. For years, I worked three-dimensionally, almost as if I were drawing in the area, designating forms and material throughout. However, through graphite, colored pencil, marker, and pen, I have recreated the framework and the allocation of objects and patterns two-dimensionally. Works on paper have evolved to incorporate collage, rubbings, tracings, stencils, and more. There may be vintage paper or not, but always contained in them are pattern, images or signs of memory, and a logic of a child’s make-believe game. Ghenov was born in Philadelphia and currently lives and works in Knoxville. She holds a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Sculpture. Presently she primarily makes drawings on paper. Ghenov has nationally shown in various group and solo shows and is currently the associate at Loghaven Artist Residency in Knoxville. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. ITH MORE people getting vaccinated, many are looking forward to reuniting with loved ones and making up for lost vacation time. However, budget is often a primary concern when planning a trip. To help make your money go further, consider these tips from the travel experts at Vrbo. Explore a new destination: With pent up travel demand, many popular travel destinations have already been booked months in advance. Instead of visiting traditionally popular locales, consider an under-the-radar destination like Cherry Log, Georgia; Bella Vista, Arkansas; or Slade, Kentucky, which all offer scenic views and outdoor adventures. Before booking, check for any travel advisories or restrictions for your destination. Be flexible with dates: Rather than selecting your dates first and finding a destination that works for your selected date range, choose a destination then see what accommodations are available. For example, doing an undated search through a vacation rental company like Vrbo can yield a wider selection for a particular destination, including some budget-friendly options. After selecting your lodging, check the dates to determine when it’s available or most affordable and plan your trip accordingly. Fly on off-peak days or times: If flying to your destination is necessary and you’re not on a tight schedule, being flexible with the time of day you fly, the number of stops, or having a longer layover can translate to a more affordable price. Generally, flying earlier in the week or later in the day is less expensive than flying closer to the weekend or taking the first flight out.

June 202 1

Book now, pay later: When securing lodging and other amenities like rental cars, you can often book your reservations without paying the full amount up front. Whether you simply place a deposit at the time of booking and pay the rest upon arrival or split the total cost into monthly payments, this type of option can provide an added level of flexibility when budgeting for and planning your trip. Book accommodations that offer length-of-stay discounts: These days, remote work and school allows for flexibility while traveling, and there are discounts to be found if you choose to stay for longer than just a few nights. In fact, some vacation rental hosts offer discounts for new listings or week- or month-long stays. Vacation rental companies like Vrbo allows travelers to use filters to find discounted properties when searching for a place to stay. Look for free activities: If you research your destination before departing, you’ll likely be able to find free or low-cost activities that interest you. Check community calendars to find events while you’ll be in town and consider options like museums, art galleries, or national parks, which are often free to the public or offer discounted admission on certain days or at specific times each day. Take advantage of public transportation: One of the best ways to get to know a city is to walk everywhere, but that isn’t feasible in all cities and locations. Rather than renting a car or using ride-sharing services, look for public transportation options such as buses or subways that are more cost-effective when possible. Also consider a frequent-travel card if you’ll be traversing your destination more than once or twice. Visit www.Vrbo.com for more resources and information to save money on your next adventure.

An Unlikely Training Ground interactions with people of all types, learning to understand, get along with, and communicate with others. I had no idea that would be of any value, it was just the job I did. I started my first outside sales role in my early 20s, and although it was not apparent to me at the time, all of that “training on the corner” had allowed me to be far more comfortable in dealing with people. In the sales and management roles that followed, I continued to realize how much of the “business basics” learned at that corner service station were applicable to my then current business role and still apply today. At a wedding in 2010, I ran into that service station owner from 25+ years ago. The first thing that came to mind was to let him know that the time I worked for them was a tremendous training ground that C A F F E RT Y prepared me for the “adult” business world. I owed him a big “thank you!” Accounting, management, and professional development courses certainly added to this, but looking back, the real-world experience and coaching I received was instrumental in allowing me to develop and be equipped for later professional roles. My reason for sharing this is to encourage those who may think that a first job, or a short-term job that may not seem relevant, could end up being a very important chapter in your life’s story. It was in mine. And to all of the small business owners who invest the time and effort to “train up” the next generation - thank you! Photo by Mirtography

AS T WE EK I was speaking with the general manager of a local restaurant group. He’s in his 20s, and I asked about his background in preparation for his current job. In addition to his business degree, he spent several years working with Chick-fil-A, learning a great deal about customer service, being coached and coaching others, and the basics of business - all equipping him for the role he is in now. This conversation reminded me of all the lessons I learned at one my first jobs, where I had no idea of the importance and application of what I was learning until years later. The summer after high school, I started work at a family-owned, full-service Exxon station in Charlotte, NC. We pumped gas, cleaned windshields, checked the oil, and made service calls BY B R E T T to fix flat tires and start cars with dead batteries. After catching on to the basics, responsibilities were added, leading to oil changes and minor repairs, ordering parts, maintaining inventories, and handling money. At the time I thought nothing of it. But outside of the actual tasks of the job, it was an excellent education in learning about people. The business was located at the corner of a busy intersection, allowing contact with every type of person imaginable - business professionals, travelers asking for directions (long before GPS), young and old, wealthy and not. AN ANSWER FOR CELLULITE I

NTRODUCING QWO: The first and only FDAapproved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Injections are administered in a series of three treatments spaced three weeks apart, and visible results may be achieved in 10 weeks. In clinical trials, women required no post-treatment downtime. About 90% of Women Deal with Cellulite Cellulite is a natural part of women’s biology. About 9 out of 10 women deal with it in their lifetime. Together, there are three things that cause cellulite’s signature dimples: Over time, skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension. How QWO Targets Cellulite QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases. These enzymes are thought to target the structural causes under the skin, where cellulite starts. It’s thought that QWO works by releasing fibrous bands, redistributing fat cells, and stimulating the growth of new collagen. People in the Know Are Loving QWO Since the injection’s FDA approval last July, QWO has won a 2020 Future of Beauty Award from Elle Magazine and has been labeled a top innovation in NewBeauty’s 2021 awards. Learn What Options Are Right for You While 9 out of 10 women have cellulite, most women also have a combination of cellulite and skin laxity on their bottoms and thighs that causes the lumpy cottage cheese skin characteristic of cellulite. Southeastern Dermatology offers other treatments to address skin laxity.

Radio Frequency to Correct Skin Laxity Morpheus8 is a fractional device that uses radiofrequency (RF) and microneedling to activate collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin and mold fat subdermally to produce a sleeker and smoother appearance. It has been approved by the FDA as a Subdermal Adipose Remodeling Device because it treats the deeper layers of the skin rather than just the surface. Another option, Evolve Trim, is a non-invasive treatment that targets dimpled skin and cellulite and works by leveraging a combination of radiofrequency energy, deep tissue heating, and vacuum designed to provide maximum results. Radiofrequency energy distributes heat to the skin and underlying fat, causing the tissues to heat. The vacuum and controlled energy pulses then work synergistically to provide natural body shaping results. Call 865-474-8800 to Get Started We have multiple options to treat your cellulite.
