New grout should always be properly sealed, cleaned regularly, and a new application of quality sealer should be applied every 12-24 months thereafter. Cleaning your grout can be tricky. Scrubbing the grout may remove dirt on the surface of the grout but not eliminate the stain. Stains can then creep back up to the surface again, causing frustration to the homeowner. Undersocialized dogs, including the “Covid Dogs” we discussed last month, can exhibit various problems, including: General fearfulness - These dogs can have crippling anxiety about anything that’s unfamiliar, manifesting in an unwillingness to approach new situations and environments. An under-socialized dog’s world is very small because life outside the front door is frightening and unpredictable. Reactivity - Not having the coping skills to appropriately respond to stressful scenarios, these dogs react defensively in an effort to maintain a buffer from the “scary” stimulus. They are not mean dogs, just scared dogs. Nervous with people - If a dog doesn’t have the opportunity to meet friendly strangers at his own pace, he might react fearfully - whether retreating or barking preemptively. Uncomfortable with dogs - Dogs who aren’t able to meet other dogs of all ages
and sizes will be wary of making new canine friends. Without exposure to the language of doggy play, it’s easy for a dog to misconstrue a frisky nip as an invitation to fight. Hard to handle - An under-socialized dog may hate being handled, making grooming (brushes & combs torture devices!), teeth cleaned, or nails clipped very challenging - if not impossible. It’s not the quantity of experiences your dog has when developing socialization and communication skills - it’s the quality. The secret to a positive outcome? Don’t push it too fast; start doggy daycare with half-day sessions, then full-day, followed by overnight camp. Allow your pet to adjust to new environments at his own pace. What’s New at the Zoo? Z OO KNOXVILLE has welcomed some new baby animals! A silveredleaf langur monkey was born on November 30 of 2020. Unlike the adults of this species who are gray and black, baby langurs are bright orange! The baby, who was introduced to the group last month, will retain this orange color and not darken completely until it is 3 to 6 months old. The monkeys are a part of the Silvered-Leaf Langur Species Survival Plan. The zoo also got two Christmas presents last year - a baby Hartmann’s mountain zebra and a new baby giraffe within days of each other! The zebra baby is the first one to be born at Zoo Knoxville, and the baby giraffe is only the second born here. All three babies are doing well and are so adorable, you need to see them in person! Creators and builders are hard at work on the ARC Center - The Clayton Family Amphibian and Reptile Conservation - for the grand opening this spring. Each area is crafted with insights from the animals’ curators and keepers for their specific species and habitat. Spray concrete is molded and sculpted to resemble rock formations, river beds, and other geographic features to give

the coming residents the best experience possible. The North American River Otters will be getting an awesome new home there as well! With Zoo Knox STEM Boxes, budding naturalists can learn more about some of their favorite animal friends without leaving the house. Themes vary month to month but will always focus on animals that are right here at Zoo Knoxville. The STEM Boxes are geared towards elementary-aged students but can be fun for the whole family. WIDOW sat across the desk from me as we discussed the financial implications of her husband’s unexpected passing at age 67. She told me that her husband had chosen a “single life” pension since it was the largest monthly payment and so, at his passing, his pension stopped, cutting her income in half. In another real-life scenario, a gentleman retired in 2007 and rolled his lump sum pension into an IRA invested in the markets. Along came 2008 when, in the panic of losing almost 40%, he sold out of his holdings and forever changed his and his wife’s retirement years. You get the idea - deciding how to take your pension benefits is one of the most important decisions you will make, and it’s irrevocable once you decide. Here are some tips to make it easier: Ask your HR department for ALL of your options, and take the time to understand them. If you are married, weigh the joint-life survivor benefits payout options of 50% versus 100%. While the 50% survivor benefit will be temptingly bigger than the 100% survivor benefit, remember that your household will lose a Social Security check at your passing. The continued 100% pension payment can make the difference between a comfortable or meager retirement for the survivor. Importantly, ask if your pension will have a cost-of-living adjustment to keep up with rising costs. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Calculator, the one-hour rate for a Knox County Home Health Aide in 2020 was $24/hour. In 2040, it’s projected to be $43.35/hour. You need income that can keep pace with inflation. If you’re not happy with your options, shop your lump sum pension around and see what kind of guaranteed payouts, increasing income options, and death benefits a highly-rated insurance company can offer. You can rollover your lump sum into an IRA insurance annuity without triggering any tax. I
T IS A good thing that March is coming, because Februar y has been miserable. Today it is 36 degrees and sleet is falling. I have a heater going under my desk, and I am wearing multiple layers. The good news is that March is generally much kinder than February, and I am sure there will be at least a few beautiful days so you can start working in your yard without freezing! You’ll want to start getting ready as soon as possible, but do not rush planting. Tender veggies, herbs, and annuals will be angry if you plant them before the soil warms and will punish you by refusing to perform. • March is the month to finalize those plans you made in February. What needs to be done in your yard? What needs to be added, removed, divided, pruned, fertilized, or replaced? Would you like to set up a birding area? Do you need more blooms and less evergreens or vice versa? Would you like to establish a pollinator friendly area? Do you need to scale back on plants that require too much maintenance? Now is the time to make these decisions and call around for landscape installation
before everyone gets too busy. As a note, remember that not everyone who slaps a “landscape” sticker on their truck knows what they are doing. It is better to pay a little more for someone who will put the right plant in the right place the right way. Ask your neighbors, check with the BBB, and have a good conversation with the person you choose, because you could be living with their work for a very long time. • March is also a great month for preparing. Once you have your plans finalized, get your beds ready. Remove all weeds and work a little compost and/or topsoil into the beds if you have not already done so. Put down a pre-emergent like Preen to keep those weeds from coming back. If you have a problem bed where everything seems to die, this is the time to do a soil test to see if your nutrients are lacking. You can also go ahead and put down some fresh mulch to keep the soil temperature and moisture levels stable during our roller-coaster spring! • You can plant trees, shrubs, and cool season perennials in your yard as soon as the ground is workable. By workable, I mean it isn’t a muddy mess. (Did you know that roots require oxygen? They
get it from the soil, but if the soil is saturated, they “drown.”) You can also plant pansies if you didn’t get them in last fall or if your fall plantings failed. • You can start warm season annual and vegetable seeds inside, but they need to stay inside. Cool-season greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, potatoes, and radishes can be seeded directly into the ground. You can also plant cole crop seedlings mid-month if Mother Nature is cooperating. This includes head lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. • You can fertilize trees and shrubs after the middle of the month. Fertilize perennials when they begin to show new growth, crocus after blooms have faded, and daffodils when they start to yellow. I like to use organic products, but I beg you to please read and follow directions no matter what kind of fertilizer you use. • Divide and transplant summer blooming perennials such as daylilies, hostas, and Siberian iris. • You can prune summer flowering shrubs like roses and Crepe Myrtles before they start putting on new growth. It is also a good idea to go ahead and prune out any dead or damaged wood from trees and shrubs. With that being said, there is a huge difference between pruning and butchering. Some of you are like a toddler that found some scissors: You just start whacking. Educate yourself! • Grasses and groundcovers can be cut back now. The easiest way is to set your lawnmower on the highest setting and run over shorter plants. Large grasses should be cut back, but leave enough old growth to protect the baby grass as it emerges. Divide overgrown clumps. • You may have perennials that look terrible right now. Once the new growth has emerged at the base of your perennials, cut all that ugly, old stuff off. If you have questions, please call. • Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders clean and full of a good quality birdseed, and keep birdbaths clean and full when they aren’t frozen. Clean out birdhouses, but make sure they are not occupied first! High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet are best this time of year. Ferns: A Perennial Favorite in Tennessee Gardens
Ferns can be used as a ground cover to soften hard edges in the landscape, such as along paths or sidewalks.

F ALL THE plants we enjoy today in our gardens and in the wild, ferns are some of the most ancient. They are one of the oldest groups of plants on Earth, with a fossil record dating back more than 350 million years. About 10,500 fern species are cataloged, with others still being studied. More may yet be discovered. Ferns can be found growing in very diverse environments. They can grow in woodlands, swamps, stream banks, from rock crevices, and alongside waterfalls. Those growing on woodland floors tend to be the best ferns for gardens and landscapes. Unlike most plants, ferns do not have flowers or seeds. They primarily reproduce by spores, usually found on the underside of their leaves. Ferns, which can be clump forming or spreading, are also able to reproduce by rhizomes. They can be divided every 3-5 years in spring or fall. Clump-forming varieties may become hollow in the center, indicating it is time to divide that plant. Most ferns grow best in partial shade. Evergreen varieties are more tolerant of deep shade. Ferns will grow in dry soils, as well as wet, but some prefer well-drained soil that is evenly moist and high in organic matter. Most also prefer acidic soil. Our native Christmas fern is adaptable and can tolerate soil that is dry and slightly alkaline. They can be planted anytime the ground is not frozen,

but spring or fall is ideal when rain is plentiful. When planted in the proper location, they are generally free of pests and disease. Slugs and snails tend to be the most common problems, and for species that thrive in drier environments, crown rot can develop if drainage is poor. On the bright side, ferns tend to be deer resistant. Often found growing wild on woodland floors, ferns are an obvious choice for a shade garden. Fronds can be lacy or leathery, offering nice texture when used alone or when combined with the large leaves of hosta and hellebores, the colorful foliage of heuchera or caladium, or the dainty blossoms of bleeding heart. Ferns can be used as a ground cover to soften the hard edges of water features, rocks, and paths, and they are wonderful filler for containers. They also provide great greenery for cut flower arrangements. Several hardy fern varieties are evergreen. Evergreen ferns recommended for Tennessee include the Holly fern, Tassel fern, and Autumn fern: • Cyrtomium falcatum (Japanese Holly fern) – Coarse, leathery, dark-green fronds resembling the leaves of a holly. Stiff, upright vase shape. Grows 1-2 feet high by 2-3 feet wide. • Polystichum polyblepharum (Tassel fern) – Shiny, dark-green fronds from central crown. Outward spreading, vase shaped clump. Grows 1-2 feet high by 1-2 feet wide.
• Dryopteris erythrosora (Autumn fern) – New fronds emerge coppery-pink in spring contrasting with older bright green fronds. Vase shaped clump. Grows 1-2 feet high by 2-3 feet wide. Other ferns that may suit your Tennessee landscape include: • Dryopteris cycadina (Shaggy Shield fern) – Stiff, leathery, light-green fronds with an arching habit. Clump forming. Grows 1.5 feet high by 3 feet wide. • Polystichum acrostichoides (Christmas fern) – Native. Dark-green, leathery fronds. Clump forming. Grows a 1 foot high by 2 feet wide. • Polystichum luctuosum (Korean Rock fern) – Glossy, dark-green fronds. Vase shaped. Grows 1 foot by 1 foot. HE KNOXVILLE MUSEUM
of Art presents “A Lasting Imprint: Rendering Rhythm and Motion in the Art of Black Mountain College” now through May 2. More than 50 prints, textiles, drawings, paintings, and sculptures from the Asheville Art Museum document radical experimentation with ways to integrate music, movement, and the visual arts. The exhibition includes work by the most influential ar tists associated with Black Mountain College, including Josef and Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Ilya Bolotowsk y, John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Lorna Blaine Halper, Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg, Marianne Preger-Simon, and Kenneth Snelson. Black Mountain College, an experimental school in the mountains near Asheville, was active from 1933 to 1957. The secluded environment fostered a sense of individuality, inter-disciplinary experimentation, and creative intensity that revolutionized a broad range of modern art forms. Movement and music - both time-based activities - can be difficult to express in static media such as

painting, drawing, and photography, yet many artists feel called to explore them. Movement serves as inspiration and similarly, music is also driven by rhythm, patterns, and variations. In few places did movement, music, visual arts, and other disciplines intermingle with such impact as at Black Mountain College, which profoundly influenced the course of American modernism. A Lasting Imprint is organized by the Asheville Art Museum (AAM) and features works from the museum’s Black Mountain College Collection. The AAM has been collecting art and materials related to Black Mountain College for more than 25 years
in recognition of the college’s importance to Western North Carolina and to the development of American art. In addition to collecting works by BMC artists during the years the school was active, the AAM also seeks to acquire works by those artists from other periods in order to represent a broad spectrum of their development. The museum continually grows its Black Mountain College Collection through gifts from students, faculty, and their families and strategic museum purchases. Noted scholar and author Mary Emma Harris of the Black Mountain College Project provided guidance to the development of the Asheville Art Museum’s Black Mountain College Collection. The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee, presents new art and new ideas, serves and educates diverse audiences, and enhances Knoxville’s quality of life. Lindbergh Forest: A South Knoxville Jewel

HE LINDBERGH FOREST
residential neighborhood is located in South Knox ville off Chapman Highway, a two-mile drive from downtown Knoxville. The subdivision was established in 1927 by Knoxville real estate developers McLean, Rector & Scott. Lindbergh Forest was built as an automobile development of custom-built homes that catered to middle-class families all within a beautiful woodland setting. With the mass production and affordability of the Model-T, the automobileoriented suburban development stage began in American cities in the 1920s. As businesses moved farther out of the downtown area, and city streetcar lines were not the only viable means of transportation, the suburbs grew rapidly. New asphalt roads, along with bridges and tunnels, replaced unpaved roadways allowing people to move out of the city limits to enjoy more green spaces and unique residential architecture. The popular revival styles of the 20th century are represented within the Lindbergh Forest neighborhood, with Tudor Revival being the most prominent style. Additional architectural styles include Dutch Colonial Revival, Colonial Revival, Spanish Eclectic, Minimal Traditional, and two Lustron Houses. Lustron Houses were prefabricated enameled metal paneled homes designed to meet the housing shortage following World War II. The colored enamel was baked into the steel so the house never required re-painting maintenance and the original colors can still be seen today. Lindbergh Forest is also unique for its use of East Tennessee marble and pink sandstone in its construction and surrounding landscape. East Tennessee marble is used in almost all of the neighborhood homes and can be seen in the window and door sills, surrounds, trim, wall coverings, and walkways. The subdivision was platted in a curvilinear form that is typical of automobile suburbs of the early 20th century. Lindbergh Forest is one of the first subdivisions in which the developer installed the infrastructure at the time of the development. Amenities included ornamental street lighting creating “whiteway” roads, city water, electricity, concrete paved streets, and landscape beautification. In May 1927, in order to garner excitement for the new development, McLean, Rector & Scott announced a competition to name the new neighborhood. They placed ads in the newspaper requesting suggestions, and more than 2,000 individuals submitted names. The winning name was selected by three judges, and five Knoxville residents who had

all suggested Lindbergh Forest, divided the $200 prize. That would be almost $3,000 in 2021! The neighborhood was named in honor of Charles Lindbergh, an American aviator, military officer, and inventor, and the name was christened on June 29, 1927. In the early morning hours of May 20, 1927, Lindbergh made the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight from Long Island, New York, to Paris, France, in a custom-built, single-engine plane called the Spirit of St. Louis. The 33 1/2 hour flight ended when Lindbergh touched down in the Paris suburbs at 10:30 pm on May 21, 1927. Today, the Spirit of St. Louis is on exhibit at the atrium of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The plane also served as the inspiration for the design of the Airplane Filling Station on Clinton Highway. By the summer of 1927, 22 lots had been sold, and construction was slow but steady. In 1929, McLean, Rector & Scott began advertising the advantages of the neighborhood’s location, highlighting the close proximity to the “new purposed Henley Street Bridge” and US 441, the “Gateway to the Smoky Mountains National Park.” By the end of 1931, with the opening of the Henley Street Bridge, construction of homes in the neighborhood increased, with steady construction continuing throughout the mid-1930s. Lindbergh Forest is an excellent example of a Knoxville automobile suburb. Although it is small in comparison to other Knoxville automobile suburbs, it still retains its architectural integrity, and the homes have been wellmaintained and continue to represent a pride of ownership that was part of the developer’s original vision.

S I WRITE this, it is the evening of the 57th anniversary of The Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I have had the privilege of interviewing many popular artists who, collectively, each say that they watched that legendary performance - and THAT specific show was what encouraged them to pursue a career in music. Since those days, the world has fallen in love with The Beatles and followed everything in the band’s 10 years together. After their breakup, we’ve kept up with every single thing that each of the lads from Liverpool have done. Even today, Beatles conventions are popular events that have many people still tied to the Fab Four. Beatlemania is alive and well! Everything Knoxville readers have enjoyed interviews with various people connected to The Beatles such as Bob Gruen, Steve Lukather, Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, and former Apple Records exec and Beatles confidant, Ken Mansfield. That circle now grows by another person who has become a good friend of mine: Nancy Lee Andrews. Nancy was discovered by the legendary radio and television entertainer, Arthur Godfrey, who introduced her to the modeling industry maven, Eileen Ford - leading to Ms. Andrews becoming an internationally sought-after model. Nancy said of her first interview with Ms. Ford: “I went and got myself a great little sundress. I walk into Eileen Ford’s office at around 11 am and I said, ‘Well, here’s my envelope’ - you know, my beat-up manila envelope - dog-eared envelope (of photos). She pulls that out, looks at them, and she said, ‘Okay, fine. This is what we’re going to do,’ and the next thing I know, I hit the ground running - had a portfolio put

together and did testing with great photographers. I was in 17 Magazine within a month. I was in Mademoiselle.” It was as a model that she caught the eye and heart of none other than Ringo Starr. During their seven-year engagement, Nancy was able to further develop her skill as an accomplished photographer - including shooting the cover photographs of two of Ringo’s albums, Ringo the 4th and Bad Boy. Years after her relationship with Ringo ended, Nancy published a book of her life in the rock world titled “A Dose of Rock ‘n’ Roll” that is still available and a fan favorite. She shared with me that her book actually came about as a result of research for another book entirely. Go to www. Boomerocity.com to hear the fascinating story in her words. Here’s a summary: Since Nancy was always going on location with bands and musicians in the ’70s, she had an extensive archive of photographs. “A relaxed archive,” she calls it. At first, Ken Mansfield, executive of several record labels and Nancy’s Rock & Roll godfather, asked for one of her photos of singer-songwriter, Harry Nilsson. After seeing how good that one was, Ken, his editor, and his publisher wanted to see more of her photo collection, so Nancy pulled out her sheets and 35 millimeter slides. “So, I prepared for them and put up my five foot light box. They came from Chicago, the editor came from Arizona, and they descended upon me and my little my home studio. I laid out 40 sheets, and they’re going, ‘Oh my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God, I think we have a book here!’ I said, ‘You’re looking for pictures for other people’s books?’ And they go, ‘No, no, no, we want to do a book with you.’ So right then and there, I mean, within like three hours
of negotiating, we negotiated ‘A Dose of Rock’n’Roll!’” Of course the popular book led to Nancy becoming a much sought-after guest at Beatles conventions. She remembers going and having conversations with Pattie Harrison, who also attended, about what a surreal experience it was to be there. But both came to the conclusion that as crazy as it was feeling like they were on display, it did help them sell their books! “I guess having a couple of girls there, which they call us ‘the muses,’ which I think Pattie Harrison is the Ultimate Beatles Muse in the World, period. But we got through that, and it was fun.” Nancy and I talked extensively over the course of two Zoom call sessions. The Big Cheese Mac & Cheese FROM JESSICA SLOMBERG @NYCFOODCOMA
Ingredients: • 1 and 1/2 cups half-and-half • 16 ounces cream cheese, cubed • 2 cups extra-sharp aged cheddar from The Big Cheese, coarsely grated • 1 pound radiatori pasta (or any fun pasta shape!) Directions: Bring large pot of water to a boil. Once water is boiling, add plenty of salt and 1 pound radiatori pasta. Cook until pasta is al dente (5-10 minutes depending on type of pasta). While pasta is boiling, add 1/2 cup half-and-half to a separate large pot or saucepan and reduce about 15 minutes over low heat. Once cream is reduced, whisk in 16 ounces cream cheese cubes until smooth, then add 2 cups of The Big Cheese. Continue whisking until smooth. Atrium - Adam Rowe: Knot Theories: An Exploration of Partial-dimensional Geometry Knots are continuous lines twisted in such a way to give the illusion of lines overlapping in the same plane. Using a formalized system of knot creation, the artwork here represents knots in multiple “in-between” dimensions in three categories, each based on a partial dimension: 1. Unicursal, self-contained lines which appear to overlap on two-dimensional surfaces 2. Tiled surfaces of regular polyhedra 3. Elements of non-orientable surface segments Adam Rowe is a Knoxville native with a background in print and screen design. He enjoys looking at art in terms of visual problem solving, with a fine arts approach to graphic design. North Wall - Ephemerality: Works by Charlotte Brindley Charlotte’s artist statement: Beauty can be both resplendent and macabre. I see the goodness of the world, but I also see the darkness. Tragedy and beauty are complimentary enigmas. I hearken back to the Gothic and Italian Renaissance eras of art history for my creations. In some of my paintings, I create works inspired by the tiny pages of illuminated manuscripts on a large scale. Other pieces are more straightforward and symbolic. By breathing life into the illuminated pages of the ancient past, I find inspiration to explore the realms of my imagination. Times long gone by are as familiar as the present. My work explores themes of injustice, impermanence, and depravity but also passion, joy, and what is beautiful beyond words. In the end, my works are an extension of myself and how I see the world around me. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Running April 1 through September 26, G-scale locomotives and railcars move along tracks placed around notable estate replicas, traversing bridges and trestles on varied levels in multiple rooms and weaving through the estate’s renowned collection of exotic botanicals. 2021 BILTMORE CALENDAR OF EVENTS Opening April 1: Stickworks Outdoor Sculptures Unique outdoor sculptural works by environmental artist Patrick Dougherty, known as “Stick Man,” will reside in Antler Hill Village starting April 1. Renowned worldwide for his monumental creations, Dougherty weaves saplings and branches into intricate artworks, fashioning whimsical forms ranging from gigantic snares and cocoons to sculptural interpretations of notable buildings. April 1 through May 27: Biltmore Blooms A progression of flowers blankets George Vanderbilt’s estate in color during Biltmore Blooms, an annual tradition that has delighted guests for many decades. Highlighted by thousands of tulips in the historic Walled Garden and across the estate, Biltmore Blooms honors the legacy of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and his accomplishments at Biltmore. Azaleas, rhododendrons, and
mountain laurel bloom later in the season, with buds of every shade appearing in the Rose Garden. Stunning floral arrangements will fill the rooms of Biltmore House, featuring flowers and greenery gathered from estate grounds. April 4: Easter Egg Hunt The Easter Rabbit makes an annual appearance on Biltmore’s Front Lawn on Easter Sunday. Highlighting the day are the grand Easter Egg Hunts. Many had to cancel or reschedule trips during the pandemic due to healt h concer ns and t r avel restrictions, which meant not only missing out on quality time with loved ones, but also skipping the mental health and selfcare benefits of going on vacation. Although 61% of families had a trip canceled due to the pandemic in 2020, travel is still on most people’s agendas, as 82% of families already have travel plans in mind for this year, according to the 2021 Vrbo (Vacation Rentals By Owner) Trend Report. This report, which includes vacation rental marketplace data, as well as survey data from family travelers, also revealed some travel habits that arose during the pandemic that are likely to remain popular throughout 2021. “Let’s face it, the pandemic makes it tough to predict what travel will look like in 2021,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “That’s why we combined search and demand trends with a first-of-its-kind traveler survey of U.S. families. The combination gives us the most accurate picture possible of the plans families are making.” Consider these pandemic-era trends as you move forward with your vacation plans: Staying in the Driver’s Seat With travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines in place throughout much of 2020, many families opted to avoid flying and visiting crowded places by jumping in the car and hitting the open road instead. This trend is likely to continue in 2021, with 59% of families saying they are more likely to drive instead of fly on their next trip. A change of scenery can be refreshing and
motivating after staring at the same four walls in your home, so consider taking a road trip and exploring a new destination, even if it’s not that far from home. Mixing Work and Play Many people were forced to adapt to working from home or facilitating e-learning for their children due to Covid-19. While turning homes into makeshift offices or classrooms wasn’t an easy task for many families, the schedule flexibility provided by the remote setup allowed for the rise of the “Flexcation” - mixing of vacation time with virtual work and school. In fact, 1 in 3 families surveyed said they were able to travel because they were working from home, and 52% of those who took a Flexcation during the pandemic found the experience refreshing, with 67% saying they would do it again. Seeking Wide Open Spaces Many travelers gravitate toward vacationing in peaceful and picturesque destinations, and the open sky, fresh air, and scenic views may be even more appealing amid the pandemic. According to the report, 61% of U.S. families said they are more likely to visit an outdoorsy destination than an urban one, and 54% are more likely to head to a national park than an amusement park. S I WRITE this note to myself, I am reminded of a most basic human character trait we can easily accept as being part of our nature - procrastination. Put if off until later, deal with it tomorrow, awaiting more information, deferring to others, or simply not acting due to being unsure of a positive outcome. There are many professionals in the small business world who are creative, capable, hard-working people that fully believe in the work or service they offer but have a difficult time translating good intentions to tangible actions and often spend far too much time getting ready to get ready. Sound familiar? In speaking with a fellow business owner recently, I was reminded of some basic principles from my early days in sales that I thought were worth sharing as a gentle reminder, myself included: Swing the bat – Having been in sales roles in several industries, and also experiencing the challenge of hiring, managing, and coaching, this is the #1 rule that can be applied universally in all aspects of life. From a business perspective – the more activity, the more contacts made, the greater the chances for success. The learning curve is greatly improved, and patterns of behavior are established
that reinforce a “get out and do it” mentality. It also develops a resiliency that, when the days (or months, or year) get tough, the default mindset is to press on, get up, and keep going. When all else fails, follow the plan – The business owner I was speaking with is starting a new venture, and we talked about the challenges of a new industry and a sole proprietorship - from making new contacts to how to market yourself and all the uncertainties of “will this actually work out?” Referring to lessons learned over the years that have been reinforced by mentors, co-workers, and authorities on the subject, when discouraged or in doubt, do the next thing. Regardless of the type of business or venture, there should be a basic “recipe” of activities that, when done on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, will lead to results. This plan should be simple, easy to track, and easily shared with others for feedback or accountability. When the days are long and you get discouraged, the simple act of following your plan by doing the next thing will result in a mental “boost” to help your attitude and perspective. From one procrastinator to another (and isn’t that all of us at one time or another?) - keep it simple, have faith in your plan, and swing the bat!

OTOX IS AMONG the most common procedures performed at Southeastern Dermatology. If you are considering Botox, here’s everything you ever wanted to know and how this popular treatment can work for you. First, what is Botox? Botox and similar products share a common ingredient, botulinum toxin. When injected, these toxins block muscles from contracting by stopping chemicals that signal movement. Doctors call these products neuromodulators. Sound scary? It isn’t. By blocking these nerve impulses, Botox is able to keep certain muscles from tightening. This activity is what causes certain lines and wrinkles on the face, such as the lines between the eyebrows (also known as glabellar lines or “11s”). With continued use, these lines can be reduced dramatically or even eliminated from the face. What can Botox be used for medically? Botox has 11 therapeutic indications. Botox isn’t new to the treatment scene: It was first approved in the 1980s, according to information from the Cleveland Clinic. The first FDA-approved use for Botox was to treat conditions like uncontrolled blinking and lazy eye. It was soon used for cosmetic treatments, too. Botox is a diverse treatment that has been used for a variety of medical and cosmetic applications for more than 30 years. What can Botox be used for cosmetically? Even with so many medical applications, Botox might be best known for its cosmetic indications. From smoothing out lines to fixing a gummy smile, Botox has many cosmetic uses: • Crow’s feet: Wrinkles that form on the outside corners of your eyes. • Forehead lines: Creases created by lifting eyebrows and expressive movement. • Frown lines: Usually perpendicular lines between your

eyebrows caused by the repeated action of underlying muscles. Often called the elevens, because they look like the number 11. • Lip Flip: Injections into your upper lip to relax the muscles and “flip” your lip upward, giving your lip a fuller appearance. How much does Botox cost? The cost of Botox varies. This is because Botox pricing is based on how many units are used. A unit of Botox might only cost $10 or $15. However, your total cost for Botox depends on how many units are needed to treat your specific concern. For example, treating lines on the forehead between the eyes might take 20 or 30 units. Smaller areas, like crow’s feet, require fewer units of Botox and will likely cost less. When you’re considering the cost of Botox, it’s important to be aware that you get what you pay for. It may be tempting to find the place with the lowest Botox cost, but extremely low prices actually aren’t a good sign. The Botox might be diluted if you are paying far below the average cost of treatments. Additionally, the person administering low-cost Botox might not have the skills and experience to give you the results you expect. This increases the risk of complication and serious damage to your skin and muscles. Will I still look natural after Botox injections? Botox looks very natural when administered by a skilled medical professional. When done correctly, you’ll look natural with fewer lines and wrinkles after treatment. How long does Botox last? For most patients, the results of Botox can last three to four months. Does Botox hurt? Botox is administered via an injection. The feeling might be similar to a small bee sting.
