I L L OW M A E Clothing Boutique is truly designed for women of all ages and sizes. Even in the midst of a pandemic, we loved having the opportunity to bring fresh and exclusive design trends to Knoxville. As East Tennessee women, we all love outfits that are versatile enough to wear to work and yet comfy enough to go play in. At Willow Mae, we encourage all women to love their “unique self” by finding their own individual fashion style and expressing it! This past season has been a difficult one! Covid has stolen our special moments and often left us feeling “less than” about ourselves. Not being able to enjoy our friends and our family along with missing out on important occasions has been so hard. And let’s be honest, some of us have gained some weight in the recent months, leading us to decide to give up on fashion altogether. At Willow Mae, our number one goal is to make fashion fun again by having

clothing sizes available for every body shape so we can all feel comfortable and confident. Our team wants to celebrate beautiful women with all of our unique shapes, lengths, and sizes. By having fashion buyers in a wide range of ages, Willow Mae is able to offer clothing and jewelry in a variety of styles to represent women of all generations. And with pricing that doesn’t break the bank, you can keep up with trends or make your own! There are no fashion “rules” here - Willow Mae is all about embracing trend, but only if they mesh with your personal style. If you like to push color and patterns, do it. If you want to stay in the neutrals, then do that. If you love life, say it with your look. We think that style is who you are, and you should embrace it! We want our fashion to be a part of the memory making in your life - whether it’s a graduation, wedding shower, church event, family photo, birthday party, or even a date with your special someone. While these events last only hours, your photos

last forever, and Willow Mae wants you to look and feel your very best in your special moments. If you are tired of going from store to store feeling that your shape is “odd,” our fashion team is here to bring a safe and stylish new shopping experience just for you! We invite you to come in and let us help shore up your confidence by giving you the fashion freedom to love and express yourself with what you wear. So whether you are searching for the perfect outfit for yourself or the perfect gift for someone else, Willow Mae Clothing Boutique has so many affordable options - from unique jewelry to trend-setting t-shirts to jeans that actually fit. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The Best Home Underdecking System Available Anywhere – Period!

BY J I M C O N N , O W N E R O F U N D E R C OV E R S YS T E M S O F T E N N E S S E E

W

E FREQUENTLY RECEIVE inquiries from homeowners who have recently visited friends and relatives that have installed an underdecking system on their home’s raised deck. It’s the appealing aesthetics that first catches their eye. Let’s face it: The underside of a deck as viewed from the patio below is dreary at best. If you have ever investigated underdecking systems, you’ve already discovered that there are a variety of options to choose from - that’s why I would like to highlight a system that I truly believe you will find superior to any other system available. First of all, we don’t purchase any generic “off-the-shelf” components. All of the materials we install at your home were manufactured and fabricated at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility specifically for your project. We use only 22 gauge galvanized steel coated with a Dura Coat polyester paint. Many of our competitors use a light gauge generic aluminum substitute. Because our patented underdecking is fully supported by our perimeter gutter system, it does not attach to the underside of your deck. This protects your deck by promoting air circulation that aides in the drying of your deck’s support joists. All we do is install Undercover Systems’ patented decking systems. We are not remodeling contractors installing windows today, cabinets tomorrow, and siding the day after. All of our installers are factory trained and certified. What our clients appreciate most is that I, Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems of Tennessee, personally supervise each and every installation. In fact, I am often on the job site helping to install our patented underdecking system as well. If you have ever considered installing an underdeck system under your home’s raised deck, I invite you to discover why Undercover Systems is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and why we have received the much coveted Consumers’ Choice Award and Green Business Certification. Available in a variety of color options and our premium bead board design, discover how you can better enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces all year-round by protecting your family from unexpected rain and the searing sun with Undercover Systems’ patented underdecking system. Spring Cleaning Can’t Restore Your Home’s Hardwood Floors S PRINGTIME IS that time of the year for many of us when we engage once again in that annual ritual of spring cleaning. Windows, cabinets, draperies, floors, and carpeting are all thoroughly washed, waxed, and cleaned. Our homes are once again as spotless as the day we moved in. But there’s one area of your home that all the cleaning and elbow grease in the world can’t restore, and that’s your home’s hardwood floors. Cleaning cannot remove scratches, dents, gouges, fading, and the UV damage that hardwood floors experience. European Fine Hardwood Floors has been helping Knoxville area homeowners rediscover the natural beauty of their home’s hardwood floors using the same expertise learned from highly skilled European craftsmen combined with today’s state-of-the-art technology. Did you know that your home’s hardwood flooring can be restored to its original,

like-new condition without the inconvenience and mess typically associated with conventional hardwood floor refinishing? Thanks to the latest technology from Bona, the world’s leader in innovative hardwood floor finishing and refinishing, your floors can be finished or refinished nearly dustfree and odor-free, with a wide variety of proprietary finishes from Bona. Valera Tomescu, owner and founder of European Fine Hardwood Floors, first learned his craft in Europe from other experienced craftsmen and then furthered his expertise by earning a Bona Certified Craftsman certification. Valera’s training, experience, and certification represents a skill level in the hardwood floor finishing and refinishing marketplace that is earned by very few individuals. If this spring is the season that you decide to restore that showcase quality look to your home’s worn, faded, and damaged hardwood floors, you are invited to discover

the European Fine Hardwood Floors difference for yourself. Experience a level of craftsmanship that you might have thought no longer existed combined with today’s cutting-edge technology. Nearly dust-free, you can now have the hardwood floors you want without the mess. And while you’re at it, why not ask Valera about updating your hardwood flooring’s stain color? Call Valera for your free, no-obligation, in-home consultation today.

the “Donation” tab to make a contribution online, or you can mail a check to 2936 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37921. Another way to financially support Random Acts of Flowers is to have your next private celebration or team building event here at our workshop or at your facility. These events typically include an overview of Random Acts of Flowers and its mission, followed by a demonstration on how to create beautiful flower arrangements. Participants are then guided through the process of creating flower arrangements that will be delivered to individuals

in local healthcare facilities. Volunteering is another way that one can support our effort, and there are a variety of volunteering opportunities available, including volunteering to pick up donated flowers, prepping donated flowers, creating the bouquets, and delivering the completed bouquets. A properly sealed grout line will protect the integrity of your floors, but a tile and grout floor that has not been sealed acts like a sponge, soaking up every nasty spill and particle of dirt it encounters. New grout should always be properly sealed, cleaned regularly, and a new application of quality sealer should be applied every 12-24 months thereafter. Cleaning your grout can be tricky. Scrubbing the grout may remove dirt on the surface of the grout but not eliminate the stain. Stains can then creep back up to the surface again, causing frustration to the homeowner. Bathrooms pose the toughest challenge since this room tends to be damp

and provides a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and mildew. Chemicals can cause discoloration and break down the integrity of your grout, leading to costly repairs. In addition, marble, granite, or high gloss tiles are especially sensitive to some cleaners, which can lead to permanent damage. The best way to test whether your grout needs resealing is to place a few drops of

water on the grout line and see if it remains on top of the grout surface or soaks right in. If it disappears, it’s time to re-seal. High traffic areas will tend to wear more quickly. Once you have determined if it is time to re-seal, first make sure your floor is free of all soil. Remove all the stains possible. You may need help from a professional. We at Surface Doc get more requests for tile and grout cleaning than any other service we offer. We use a four-step restoration process combining high heat, eco-friendly emulsifiers, adjustable pressure, and contained suction. 10 years!

Luckily, spring is right around the corner! Our surroundings influence our moods, and color is proven to be one of those influences. After all of the winter greys and neutrals, bright spring colors are a welcome addition! One of the many factors we consider when designing a home is color theory, and we combine that with your personal preferences for a curated color palette. Since it's March let's consider green. All greens are rooted in nature, and bring a touch of the outdoors in. However, colors change a space a little differently based on their shades and tints. A bright kelly green will feel bold and energetic, but a soft mint green, feels relaxing and calming. The bedroom on the right utilizes both of these colors with a bright pink to create a upbeat and vibrant space, that still promotes restful sleep. Add a boost to your day by adding the colors you love in your home. Need help finding the perfect hues? That's where we come in. Give us a call today!

E H AVI O R I S a product of nature and nurture - a mix of genetics and experience. Undersocialized dogs, including the “Covid Dogs” we discussed last month, can exhibit various problems, including: General fearfulness - These dogs can have crippling anxiety about anything that’s unfamiliar, manifesting in an unwillingness to approach new situations and environments. An under-socialized dog’s world is very small because life outside the front door is frightening and unpredictable. Reactivity - Not having the coping skills to appropriately respond to stressful scenarios, these dogs react defensively in an effort to maintain a buffer from the “scary” stimulus. They are not mean dogs, just scared dogs. Nervous with people - If a dog doesn’t have the opportunity to meet friendly strangers at his own pace, he might react fearfully - whether retreating or barking preemptively. Uncomfortable with dogs - Dogs who aren’t able to meet other dogs of all ages

and sizes will be wary of making new canine friends. Without exposure to the language of doggy play, it’s easy for a dog to misconstrue a frisky nip as an invitation to fight. Hard to handle - An under-socialized dog may hate being handled, making grooming (brushes & combs torture devices!), teeth cleaned, or nails clipped very challenging - if not impossible. It’s not the quantity of experiences your dog has when developing socialization and communication skills - it’s the quality. The secret to a positive outcome? Don’t push it too fast; start doggy daycare with half-day sessions, then full-day, followed by overnight camp. Allow your pet to adjust to new environments at his own pace. That’s where our IDP (Individual Development Plans) come into play. Call today to begin developing your dog’s socialization skills!

What’s New at the Zoo? Z OO KNOXVILLE has welcomed some new baby animals! A silveredleaf langur monkey was born on November 30 of 2020. Unlike the adults of this species who are gray and black, baby langurs are bright orange! The baby, who was introduced to the group last month, will retain this orange color and not darken completely until it is 3 to 6 months old. The monkeys are a part of the Silvered-Leaf Langur Species Survival Plan. The zoo also got two Christmas presents last year - a baby Hartmann’s mountain zebra and a new baby giraffe within days of each other! The zebra baby is the first one to be born at Zoo Knoxville, and the baby giraffe is only the second born here. All three babies are doing well and are so adorable, you need to see them in person! Creators and builders are hard at work on the ARC Center - The Clayton Family Amphibian and Reptile Conservation - for the grand opening this spring. Each area is crafted with insights from the animals’ curators and keepers for their specific species and habitat. Spray concrete is molded and sculpted to resemble rock formations, river beds, and other geographic features to give

I

N THE WORLD premiere of Frank Pesci’s “Royal Flush,” four sisters (either by blood or common experience) size each other up over one hand of poker. The fifth - their “mother” - manages the proceedings, calls the game, and calmly deals. With each card, one of the four sisters reflects on the hand they are dealt - both in the game and in their lives - and, in the process, reveals their “tell.” The stubbornness and competitiveness of the four sisters push them all to advance terrible hands while the dealer quietly assembles a Royal Flush. As they try to exploit each other’s “tells,” the nature of their relationships comes to light in a hilarious and heartwarming fashion. Online and in-person tickets are available. In-person seating will be limited based on guidelines regarding social distancing. For tickets or more information, visit www.marblecityopera.com.

HE SUN is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless possibilities to enjoy your home’s backyard experience. In East Tennessee, homeowners are creating more outdoor living spaces, but are you really enjoying your new spaces to their full potential? If your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. And here’s why. Homeowners are increasingly adding outdoor “rooms,” like porches and lanais with fireplaces, beautiful lighting, complete kitchens with grills, refrigerators and work areas, and even weather-proof artwork. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from fully enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide a solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade, allowing your friends and family to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, and also extend the time spent on patios by blocking biting insects that can spoil your evening events. Large, motorized screens are the perfect solution for blending function and comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using your retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, most retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. They are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend the screens with your interior and exterior color and decorating schemes and can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. For more information about how to begin enjoying your home’s outdoor living areas to their fullest potential, call 865-919-1615 or visit www.tennesseescreens.com. Invest in Your Home, Invest in Your Health BY D AV I D B R E W S T E R , O W N E R O F A Q U A C L E A R WAT E R S YS T E M S , L LC

E AT Aqua Clear Water Systems believe that upgrading yo u r h o m e w it h a w ate r filtration system is the #1 way to increase your home’s value and your family’s health. In the past year, we’ve spent more time in our homes than ever before, and the housing market has absolutely exploded. So, we’d like to give you 5 reasons why a Kinetico Water System is your next best home improvement investment. 1. Improved Water Quality, Taste & Odor. East Tennessee’s water is known for its hardness, as well as chlorine, iron, sediment, and other harmful contaminants polluting the water. A whole house Kinetico water filtration system can remove all of these contaminants to give you tasteless, odorless, and silky feeling soft water throughout your home. 2. Improved Life of Appliances & Fixtures. A system will protect your home from damages caused by a variety of water contaminants! You could be extending the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, pipes, refrigerator, and more by installing a Kinetico water system, because

reducing the build-up in these appliances allows them to work efficiently. 3. Increased Value of Your Home. With the housing market booming, we’d love to help you get a bigger bang for your buck when selling. An article titled 10 Upgrades That Increase Home Values by Forbes stated “this amenity will pay off now and in the future when it’s time to sell.” 4. Improved Health. Chlorine is a harmful chemical used to treat bacteria in water. While it’s necessary to kill bacteria, chlorine can’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. When you shower in chlorinated tap water, your skin absorbs the chlorine like a sponge, leaving your health at risk. To name a few, high amounts of chlorine can cause breathing and lung problems, as well as cancer from THMs agents. Filtering your water could save you from unnecessary illnesses. 5. Improved Skin & Hair. A whole house filtration system reduces the amount of build-up on your appliances, as well as your skin and hair. Who wouldn’t want that? Softened water results in brighter skin, shinier hair, and longer-lasting clothes.

Now that you know the benefits of installing a whole-home filtration system, we’d love the opportunity to help you improve your home in 2021 by doing an in-person or virtual free water health check-up. We’ll come to your house for FREE or connect via Zoom. It’s your choice! For Everything Knoxville readers only, we’re offering an exclusive designer faucet in the color of your choice ($195 value) and $200 off when you purchase a system before March 31, 2021. Home Offices: Do Your Homework

wo r k i n g f r o m h o m e l a s t March, more than likely you didn’t put much thought into where you did your work. You probably thought it was only temporary. It wasn’t. Here we are more than year after the Covid pandemic changed so many aspects of our daily lives, especially working from home. The makeshift home offices we created that involved working on the laptop from the bed or flipping through files on the living room sofa are no longer acceptable. That’s why, in 2021 and beyond, home offices will be more important than ever. Approximately 40% of Americans are now working from home full-time. In fact, many Americans want to continue working from home even after the pandemic ends. So one of today’s top home trends is adding a home office or renovating an existing space in the house to work. “As people continue to work from home, they don’t want to hold Zoom meetings or answer calls from the kitchen table,” explained Kathryn Norton, co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Our customers want to develop a work space that will maximize their concentration, motivation, and productivity. However, having an office at home doesn’t

need to be extravagant. With the right design, an extra bedroom, closet, quiet corner, or loft can all be used to fill this need.” No matter where you choose to put your new home office, there are some important aspects to consider: Don’t Sacrifice Form for Function Your desk, shelves, and storage should serve you, not the other way around. Consider your workflow and what items you need at your fingertips. While a basic office desk from a big-box store may be inexpensive, it probably won’t fit your needs. A custom home office doesn’t have to be expensive, just designed for your needs to enhance productivity.

Invest in a Great Chair You spend hours sitting in your office chair; an ergonomically correct, comfortable seat is worth every dime! Master Your Technology Hide unsightly cords. Start by making sure your equipment is close to outlets and easy to access. Feed the cords into a desk grommet that helps guide cords through a hole in the desk and hides them underneath. Tame the cord jungle on the floor with cord winders, tubing, or a wire organizer. Let There Be Light Cut down on eyestrain and headaches by making sure you have plenty of light. Also, plan the position of the computer monitor so there’s no glare from a window or overhead light. No mater the size of your office, call Tailored Living of Knoxville to give you a design that maximizes your storage space and budget!

A Once in a Lifetime Pension Decision BY Y VO N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

A

WIDOW sat across the desk from me as we discussed the financial implications of her husband’s unexpected passing at age 67. She told me that her husband had chosen a “single life” pension since it was the largest monthly payment and so, at his passing, his pension stopped, cutting her income in half. In another real-life scenario, a gentleman retired in 2007 and rolled his lump sum pension into an IRA invested in the markets. Along came 2008 when, in the panic of losing almost 40%, he sold out of his holdings and forever changed his and his wife’s retirement years. You get the idea - deciding how to take your pension benefits is one of the most important decisions you will make, and it’s irrevocable once you decide. Here are some tips to make it easier: Ask your HR department for ALL of your options, and take the time to understand them. If you are married, weigh the joint-life survivor benefits payout options of 50% versus 100%. While the 50% survivor benefit will be temptingly bigger than the 100% survivor benefit, remember that your household will lose a Social Security check at your passing. The continued 100% pension payment can make the difference between a comfortable or meager retirement for the survivor. Importantly, ask if your pension will have a cost-of-living adjustment to keep up with rising costs. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Calculator, the one-hour rate for a Knox County Home Health Aide in 2020 was $24/hour. In 2040, it’s projected to be $43.35/hour. You need income that can keep pace with inflation. If you’re not happy with your options, shop your lump sum pension around and see what kind of guaranteed payouts, increasing income options, and death benefits a highly-rated insurance company can offer. You can rollover your lump sum into an IRA insurance annuity without triggering any tax. For employees who worry whether their employer is in good enough financial health to pay their lifetime pension, this can be a great alternative. If it feels a bit overwhelming, we can help you weigh your choices and find a solution that fits you and your family - just give us a call to chat. Then you can relax and enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve worked so hard for!

Add Value to Your Home With Organization BY C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y, W W W.C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y.C O M

W

I T H O U R H O M E lives taking center stage these days, you may be longing for a refreshing change of scenery. Why not organize? Upgrading your pantry, garage, laundry room, or primary closet with custom storage brings peace, order, and beauty to your busy life. And according to a recent article on Kiplinger.com, “11 Home Features Today’s Buyers Want Most,” you’ll be making your home more attractive in the marketplace. The Perfect Pantry Laura Slyman, Broker, Owner, and Auctioneer with Slyman Real Estate and the Laura Slyman Team, relates that an organized pantry space is becoming a higher priority with buyers due to cooking more at home and storing supplies in bulk. Realty Executives REALTOR ® Jon Brock points out the need for convenience: “Buyers are yearning for pantries where storage of items is easily viewable without the need to ‘dig’ for contents. They want pantries where they can ‘see’ what they can use next.” Garage Growth Both Real Estate professionals agree that designed garages, packed with colorful features that are attractive as well as practical, are a hot trend that keeps getting hotter. Hand-laid epoxy floors are waterproof and easy to clean, powder-coated cabinets provide rugged storage for tools and outdoor supplies, and slatwalls with dozens of accessories get clutter and unusual-sized items off the floor. “These upgrades immediately increase the market appeal of the property,” says Brock. Laundry Room Love According to Slyman, although laundry room organizational upgrades are less common, they’re impactful for buyers. Custom cabinets, countertops, hampers, and ironing stations combine elegance with function while freeing up other areas of the house. “Even though this is an ‘afterthought’ room for guests, it’s the primary room for every homeowner,” says Slyman. “This is the one room we all live in!” Closet Confidence It comes as no surprise that a primary walk-in closet fully outfitted with custom storage is a dream come true for many homebuyers. Organized design maximizes every inch of space and can even be used to transform a nearby room into a clothing haven complete with a pull-out mirror, vanity area, and center island. Regarding upgrades, Brock assures, “It appears NO primary/master closet can be too big!” Organization Adds Value “Overall, when a house depicts order and organization, it visually shows better,” says

Slyman. “Buyers automatically translate these areas into the perception that the entire home has been maintained.” Brock notes, “Organization throughout the household is on every homeowner’s mind… products and services are making this dreaded chore much easier, and owners are realizing it’s likely easier to have someone else organize parts of their homes than they, themselves, wish to tackle.” Knoxville-based home organization company Closets by McKenry is ready to help give your pantry, garage, laundry room, or primary closet a functional facelift. March in the Garden BY L I S A G R U G I N

I

T IS A good thing that March is coming, because Februar y has been miserable. Today it is 36 degrees and sleet is falling. I have a heater going under my desk, and I am wearing multiple layers. The good news is that March is generally much kinder than February, and I am sure there will be at least a few beautiful days so you can start working in your yard without freezing! You’ll want to start getting ready as soon as possible, but do not rush planting. Tender veggies, herbs, and annuals will be angry if you plant them before the soil warms and will punish you by refusing to perform. • March is the month to finalize those plans you made in February. What needs to be done in your yard? What needs to be added, removed, divided, pruned, fertilized, or replaced? Would you like to set up a birding area? Do you need more blooms and less evergreens or vice versa? Would you like to establish a pollinator friendly area? Do you need to scale back on plants that require too much maintenance? Now is the time to make these decisions and call around for landscape installation

before everyone gets too busy. As a note, remember that not everyone who slaps a “landscape” sticker on their truck knows what they are doing. It is better to pay a little more for someone who will put the right plant in the right place the right way. Ask your neighbors, check with the BBB, and have a good conversation with the person you choose, because you could be living with their work for a very long time. • March is also a great month for preparing. Once you have your plans finalized, get your beds ready. Remove all weeds and work a little compost and/or topsoil into the beds if you have not already done so. Put down a pre-emergent like Preen to keep those weeds from coming back. If you have a problem bed where everything seems to die, this is the time to do a soil test to see if your nutrients are lacking. You can also go ahead and put down some fresh mulch to keep the soil temperature and moisture levels stable during our roller-coaster spring! • You can plant trees, shrubs, and cool season perennials in your yard as soon as the ground is workable. By workable, I mean it isn’t a muddy mess. (Did you know that roots require oxygen? They

get it from the soil, but if the soil is saturated, they “drown.”) You can also plant pansies if you didn’t get them in last fall or if your fall plantings failed. • You can start warm season annual and vegetable seeds inside, but they need to stay inside. Cool-season greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, potatoes, and radishes can be seeded directly into the ground. You can also plant cole crop seedlings mid-month if Mother Nature is cooperating. This includes head lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. • You can fertilize trees and shrubs after the middle of the month. Fertilize perennials when they begin to show new growth, crocus after blooms have faded, and daffodils when they start to yellow. I like to use organic products, but I beg you to please read and follow directions no matter what kind of fertilizer you use. • Divide and transplant summer blooming perennials such as daylilies, hostas, and Siberian iris. • You can prune summer flowering shrubs like roses and Crepe Myrtles before they start putting on new growth. It is also a good idea to go ahead and prune out any dead or damaged wood from trees and shrubs. With that being said, there is a huge difference between pruning and butchering. Some of you are like a toddler that found some scissors: You just start whacking. Educate yourself! • Grasses and groundcovers can be cut back now. The easiest way is to set your lawnmower on the highest setting and run over shorter plants. Large grasses should be cut back, but leave enough old growth to protect the baby grass as it emerges. Divide overgrown clumps. • You may have perennials that look terrible right now. Once the new growth has emerged at the base of your perennials, cut all that ugly, old stuff off. If you have questions, please call. • Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders clean and full of a good quality birdseed, and keep birdbaths clean and full when they aren’t frozen. Clean out birdhouses, but make sure they are not occupied first! High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet are best this time of year. We are getting shipments in daily of gift items and plants, so stop by and see what’s new!

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month

Ferns: A Perennial Favorite in Tennessee Gardens

Ferns can be used as a ground cover to soften hard edges in the landscape, such as along paths or sidewalks.

O

F ALL THE plants we enjoy today in our gardens and in the wild, ferns are some of the most ancient. They are one of the oldest groups of plants on Earth, with a fossil record dating back more than 350 million years. About 10,500 fern species are cataloged, with others still being studied. More may yet be discovered. Ferns can be found growing in very diverse environments. They can grow in woodlands, swamps, stream banks, from rock crevices, and alongside waterfalls. Those growing on woodland floors tend to be the best ferns for gardens and landscapes. Unlike most plants, ferns do not have flowers or seeds. They primarily reproduce by spores, usually found on the underside of their leaves. Ferns, which can be clump forming or spreading, are also able to reproduce by rhizomes. They can be divided every 3-5 years in spring or fall. Clump-forming varieties may become hollow in the center, indicating it is time to divide that plant. Most ferns grow best in partial shade. Evergreen varieties are more tolerant of deep shade. Ferns will grow in dry soils, as well as wet, but some prefer well-drained soil that is evenly moist and high in organic matter. Most also prefer acidic soil. Our native Christmas fern is adaptable and can tolerate soil that is dry and slightly alkaline. They can be planted anytime the ground is not frozen,

Evergreen ferns, including these Tassel ferns (Polystichum polyblepharum), are wonderful fillers for decorative containers all year long.

but spring or fall is ideal when rain is plentiful. When planted in the proper location, they are generally free of pests and disease. Slugs and snails tend to be the most common problems, and for species that thrive in drier environments, crown rot can develop if drainage is poor. On the bright side, ferns tend to be deer resistant. Often found growing wild on woodland floors, ferns are an obvious choice for a shade garden. Fronds can be lacy or leathery, offering nice texture when used alone or when combined with the large leaves of hosta and hellebores, the colorful foliage of heuchera or caladium, or the dainty blossoms of bleeding heart. Ferns can be used as a ground cover to soften the hard edges of water features, rocks, and paths, and they are wonderful filler for containers. They also provide great greenery for cut flower arrangements. Several hardy fern varieties are evergreen. Evergreen ferns recommended for Tennessee include the Holly fern, Tassel fern, and Autumn fern: • Cyrtomium falcatum (Japanese Holly fern) – Coarse, leathery, dark-green fronds resembling the leaves of a holly. Stiff, upright vase shape. Grows 1-2 feet high by 2-3 feet wide. • Polystichum polyblepharum (Tassel fern) – Shiny, dark-green fronds from central crown. Outward spreading, vase shaped clump. Grows 1-2 feet high by 1-2 feet wide.

• Dryopteris erythrosora (Autumn fern) – New fronds emerge coppery-pink in spring contrasting with older bright green fronds. Vase shaped clump. Grows 1-2 feet high by 2-3 feet wide. Other ferns that may suit your Tennessee landscape include: • Dryopteris cycadina (Shaggy Shield fern) – Stiff, leathery, light-green fronds with an arching habit. Clump forming. Grows 1.5 feet high by 3 feet wide. • Polystichum acrostichoides (Christmas fern) – Native. Dark-green, leathery fronds. Clump forming. Grows a 1 foot high by 2 feet wide. • Polystichum luctuosum (Korean Rock fern) – Glossy, dark-green fronds. Vase shaped. Grows 1 foot by 1 foot. Specimens of these ferns, and many other cultivars, can be viewed at each of the UT Gardens sites across the state: Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit utia.tennessee. edu/state-botanical-garden.

Dolly Parton’s

Stampede 34th Season of Fun & Adventure

K

NOWN FOR more than three decades as “the most fun place to eat in the Smokies,” the Stampede features an exciting line-up of amazing equestrian acts, friendly competition, foot-stomping music, comedic fun, and a four-course feast. “Everything in our show - from the first feat of our talented equestrian performers to the last bite of our delicious four-course feast is bigger than life, and it was such a privilege last year to bring families and friends together to make memories in a most unusual year,” said David Swangel, Stampede’s General Manager. “Our dedicated cast members look forward to making every show the ultimate

entertainment and dining experience. That’s why we look forward to every new season we want guests to make memories they will hold onto for a lifetime.” From the moment guests arrive, there are unique experiences to be made around every corner. As they enter the spacious 35,000-square-foot arena where the main show begins, guests are introduced to the cast leading the show’s 32 magnificent horses through the performance. While guests enjoy their multi-course fest, they are immersed in America’s Great Plains of yesteryear, thanks to a state-of-the-art LED back set wall where live buffalo and thundering longhorns roam and settlers bring the American West

to life. With singing, dancing, comedy, and impressive displays of horse-riding skills, guests truly feel like they are on the American frontier and then nestled under the stars in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Stampede experience concludes as the arena fills with the talented riders and their horses taking center-stage for a patriotic red, white, and blue salute to America, featuring a special song sung by Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton’s Stampede will continue to adhere to enhanced sanitation procedures and follow all other guidelines as provided by the CDC and state of Tennessee. Inside the Garage: Saying Goodbye to Winter

T

HE AF TERMATH of winter may be a garage with more mess a n d c l u t te r, i n c l u d i n g s p o r t s equipment, residue from salted roads, and muddy boots. However, rather than closing the door on the chaos, make a plan to clean your garage. And after that is done, here are some storage tips for maintaining your garage for maximum efficiency. • Use plastic, lidded storage bins instead of cardboard boxes to protect stored items. Cardboard absorbs moisture, attracts pests, and deteriorates over time. • Since bags can burst open and spill, transfer contents into plastic containers (pet food, sand, plant food). • Create low-level storage with shelves, drawers, or baskets so kids can manage their own things like sports equipment. • Store seldom-used items up high; keep most used items within easy reach to eliminate constant shifting. • Keep the floor clear. Bulky items like camping tents, holiday decorations, and lawn furniture can be stored in overhead storage racks. Garden tools, even a wheelbarrow, can be hung on versatile slatwall. • Purge, purge, purge! Get rid of items you no longer need or want. Donate or sell what is in good condition and throw away the rest.

A small area in the garage dedicated to shoes and coats will help reduce the amount of dirt and dust in the house.

A clean garage contributes to your whole house staying cleaner by eliminating tracked in dirt, oil, pollen, and anything else that could stick to the garage floor or your shoes. An unfinished concrete floor makes it almost impossible to keep your

garage clean. Surface cracks and crevices attract and hold dust and dirt, and its porosity retains moisture that can facilitate the growth of mold and bacteria, creating an unhealthy environment. Investing in a low-maintenance floor for your garage is key to maintaining a clean space. An easy-care custom garage floor from PremierGarage of Knoxville keeps your garage cleaner with surfaces that resist spills and moisture, as well as reduce dust and dirt buildup. Backed by a multi-year warranty, the proprietary polyaspartic flooring provides durable elegance while eliminating stains, cracks, chipping, and peeling. The slip-resistant surface is available in a variety of UV resistant colors, and stands up to years of hot tires, stains, and dropped tools. With competitive pricing without sacrificing quality, PremierGarage also provides excellent customer service. The company and its employees are committed to customer satisfaction to help you make your garage spring ready!

The exhibition includes work by the most influential ar tists associated with Black Mountain College, including Josef and Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Ilya Bolotowsk y, John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Lorna Blaine Halper, Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg, Marianne Preger-Simon, and Kenneth Snelson. Black Mountain College, an experimental school in the mountains near Asheville, was active from 1933 to 1957. The secluded environment fostered a sense of individuality, inter-disciplinary experimentation, and creative intensity that revolutionized a broad range of modern art forms. Movement and music - both time-based activities - can be difficult to express in static media such as

painting, drawing, and photography, yet many artists feel called to explore them. Movement serves as inspiration and similarly, music is also driven by rhythm, patterns, and variations. In few places did movement, music, visual arts, and other disciplines intermingle with such impact as at Black Mountain College, which profoundly influenced the course of American modernism. A Lasting Imprint is organized by the Asheville Art Museum (AAM) and features works from the museum’s Black Mountain College Collection. The AAM has been collecting art and materials related to Black Mountain College for more than 25 years

in recognition of the college’s importance to Western North Carolina and to the development of American art. In addition to collecting works by BMC artists during the years the school was active, the AAM also seeks to acquire works by those artists from other periods in order to represent a broad spectrum of their development. The museum continually grows its Black Mountain College Collection through gifts from students, faculty, and their families and strategic museum purchases. Noted scholar and author Mary Emma Harris of the Black Mountain College Project provided guidance to the development of the Asheville Art Museum’s Black Mountain College Collection. The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee, presents new art and new ideas, serves and educates diverse audiences, and enhances Knoxville’s quality of life. The museum is located at 1050 World’s Fair Park and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. Admission and parking are free. Lindbergh Forest: A South Knoxville Jewel

T

HE LINDBERGH FOREST

residential neighborhood is located in South Knox ville off Chapman Highway, a two-mile drive from downtown Knoxville. The subdivision was established in 1927 by Knoxville real estate developers McLean, Rector & Scott. Lindbergh Forest was built as an automobile development of custom-built homes that catered to middle-class families all within a beautiful woodland setting. With the mass production and affordability of the Model-T, the automobileoriented suburban development stage began in American cities in the 1920s. As businesses moved farther out of the downtown area, and city streetcar lines were not the only viable means of transportation, the suburbs grew rapidly. New asphalt roads, along with bridges and tunnels, replaced unpaved roadways allowing people to move out of the city limits to enjoy more green spaces and unique residential architecture. The popular revival styles of the 20th century are represented within the Lindbergh Forest neighborhood, with Tudor Revival being the most prominent style. Additional architectural styles include Dutch Colonial Revival, Colonial Revival, Spanish Eclectic, Minimal Traditional, and two Lustron Houses. Lustron Houses were prefabricated enameled metal paneled homes designed to meet the housing shortage following World War II. The colored enamel was baked into the steel so the house never required re-painting maintenance and the original colors can still be seen today. Lindbergh Forest is also unique for its use of East Tennessee marble and pink sandstone in its construction and surrounding landscape. East Tennessee marble is used in almost all of the neighborhood homes and can be seen in the window and door sills, surrounds, trim, wall coverings, and walkways. The subdivision was platted in a curvilinear form that is typical of automobile suburbs of the early 20th century. Lindbergh Forest is one of the first subdivisions in which the developer installed the infrastructure at the time of the development. Amenities included ornamental street lighting creating “whiteway” roads, city water, electricity, concrete paved streets, and landscape beautification. In May 1927, in order to garner excitement for the new development, McLean, Rector & Scott announced a competition to name the new neighborhood. They placed ads in the newspaper requesting suggestions, and more than 2,000 individuals submitted names. The winning name was selected by three judges, and five Knoxville residents who had

all suggested Lindbergh Forest, divided the $200 prize. That would be almost $3,000 in 2021! The neighborhood was named in honor of Charles Lindbergh, an American aviator, military officer, and inventor, and the name was christened on June 29, 1927. In the early morning hours of May 20, 1927, Lindbergh made the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight from Long Island, New York, to Paris, France, in a custom-built, single-engine plane called the Spirit of St. Louis. The 33 1/2 hour flight ended when Lindbergh touched down in the Paris suburbs at 10:30 pm on May 21, 1927. Today, the Spirit of St. Louis is on exhibit at the atrium of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The plane also served as the inspiration for the design of the Airplane Filling Station on Clinton Highway. By the summer of 1927, 22 lots had been sold, and construction was slow but steady. In 1929, McLean, Rector & Scott began advertising the advantages of the neighborhood’s location, highlighting the close proximity to the “new purposed Henley Street Bridge” and US 441, the “Gateway to the Smoky Mountains National Park.” By the end of 1931, with the opening of the Henley Street Bridge, construction of homes in the neighborhood increased, with steady construction continuing throughout the mid-1930s. Lindbergh Forest is an excellent example of a Knoxville automobile suburb. Although it is small in comparison to other Knoxville automobile suburbs, it still retains its architectural integrity, and the homes have been wellmaintained and continue to represent a pride of ownership that was part of the developer’s original vision.

Nancy Lee Andrews BY R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y.C O M

A

S I WRITE this, it is the evening of the 57th anniversary of The Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I have had the privilege of interviewing many popular artists who, collectively, each say that they watched that legendary performance - and THAT specific show was what encouraged them to pursue a career in music. Since those days, the world has fallen in love with The Beatles and followed everything in the band’s 10 years together. After their breakup, we’ve kept up with every single thing that each of the lads from Liverpool have done. Even today, Beatles conventions are popular events that have many people still tied to the Fab Four. Beatlemania is alive and well! Everything Knoxville readers have enjoyed interviews with various people connected to The Beatles such as Bob Gruen, Steve Lukather, Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, and former Apple Records exec and Beatles confidant, Ken Mansfield. That circle now grows by another person who has become a good friend of mine: Nancy Lee Andrews. Nancy was discovered by the legendary radio and television entertainer, Arthur Godfrey, who introduced her to the modeling industry maven, Eileen Ford - leading to Ms. Andrews becoming an internationally sought-after model. Nancy said of her first interview with Ms. Ford: “I went and got myself a great little sundress. I walk into Eileen Ford’s office at around 11 am and I said, ‘Well, here’s my envelope’ - you know, my beat-up manila envelope - dog-eared envelope (of photos). She pulls that out, looks at them, and she said, ‘Okay, fine. This is what we’re going to do,’ and the next thing I know, I hit the ground running - had a portfolio put

together and did testing with great photographers. I was in 17 Magazine within a month. I was in Mademoiselle.” It was as a model that she caught the eye and heart of none other than Ringo Starr. During their seven-year engagement, Nancy was able to further develop her skill as an accomplished photographer - including shooting the cover photographs of two of Ringo’s albums, Ringo the 4th and Bad Boy. Years after her relationship with Ringo ended, Nancy published a book of her life in the rock world titled “A Dose of Rock ‘n’ Roll” that is still available and a fan favorite. She shared with me that her book actually came about as a result of research for another book entirely. Go to www. Boomerocity.com to hear the fascinating story in her words. Here’s a summary: Since Nancy was always going on location with bands and musicians in the ’70s, she had an extensive archive of photographs. “A relaxed archive,” she calls it. At first, Ken Mansfield, executive of several record labels and Nancy’s Rock & Roll godfather, asked for one of her photos of singer-songwriter, Harry Nilsson. After seeing how good that one was, Ken, his editor, and his publisher wanted to see more of her photo collection, so Nancy pulled out her sheets and 35 millimeter slides. “So, I prepared for them and put up my five foot light box. They came from Chicago, the editor came from Arizona, and they descended upon me and my little my home studio. I laid out 40 sheets, and they’re going, ‘Oh my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God, I think we have a book here!’ I said, ‘You’re looking for pictures for other people’s books?’ And they go, ‘No, no, no, we want to do a book with you.’ So right then and there, I mean, within like three hours

of negotiating, we negotiated ‘A Dose of Rock’n’Roll!’” Of course the popular book led to Nancy becoming a much sought-after guest at Beatles conventions. She remembers going and having conversations with Pattie Harrison, who also attended, about what a surreal experience it was to be there. But both came to the conclusion that as crazy as it was feeling like they were on display, it did help them sell their books! “I guess having a couple of girls there, which they call us ‘the muses,’ which I think Pattie Harrison is the Ultimate Beatles Muse in the World, period. But we got through that, and it was fun.” Nancy and I talked extensively over the course of two Zoom call sessions. She shared about how she was discovered, her Ringo years, her acting, and her post-Beatles life. Both calls can be viewed by visiting www.Boomerocity.com. Be sure to log on to hear Nancy’s stories in her own words. Additionally, you can order Nancy’s books directly from Nancy Lee Andrews by visiting her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ nancylee.andrews.5. Tell her that Boomerocity and Everything Knoxville Magazine sent you!

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Keeping Tennessee’s Land and Water Healthy, One Yard at a Time

SMART YARD - that’s what UT Institute of Agriculture calls a yard that is in tune with the local environment for the benefit of both people and our ecosystem. The Tennessee Valley Authority, University of Tennessee Extension, and the Tennessee Water Resources Research Center have worked together to bring this program to Tennessee. Tennessee Smart Yards is an UT Extensionled program that guides Tennesseans on practices they can apply in their outdoor spaces to create healthier, more ecologicallysound landscapes and communities. Nine principles of stewardship serve as the foundation for the program and are explored in online modules and practical workshops taught by UT Extension and water resource professionals. You don’t have to be an expert gardener or landscaper to create a Tennessee Smart Yard! All it takes is a willingness to learn and a desire to take actions described in their TNSY Workbook. Maintaining a Tennessee Smart Yard provides natural functionality for homeowners through working with nature for the benefit of both. Learn

why a Smart Yard is right for you and our environment by visiting their website at www.tnyards.utk.edu. With a Tennessee Smart Yard, you win and so does Tennessee’s environment. You don’t waste water, fertilizers, or pesticides, and Tennessee’s waterways and wildlife are protected for generations to come. The Nine Principles of the Tennessee Smart Yards Program: • Right Plant, Right Place • Manage Soils and Mulch • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • Water Efficiently • Use Fertilizer Appropriately • Manage Yard Pests • Reduce Stormwater Runoff and its Pollutants • Provide for Wildlife • Protect Water’s Edge There’s no doubt about it - successful garden and lawn care in Tennessee requires special knowledge and skills. The Tennessee Yardstick Workbook is available at www.tnyards.utk.edu and shows you how to create attractive and healthy “Smart Yards” by working with Tennessee’s

environment rather than against it. The workbook is your roadmap to a more sustainable landscape along with nine video sessions with team experts that provide fundamental information and tips on each of the foundational principles. What is the payoff? It’s a lovely yard that meets your needs, enhances your community, and helps protect Tennessee’s beauty and natural resources! Share with UT Institute of Agriculture how you achieved your Smart Yard to receive an official certificate to show everyone that you have done your part to keep Tennessee’s land and water healthy.

Make This the Cheesiest Year Ever A RT I C L E C O U RT E S Y O F B P T

A

RE YOU IN search of a stressfree and undeniably delicious snack for your family game night? Want to surprise a special person you haven’t seen in a while with a gift delivery? Or do you simply want to kick grandma’s recipes up a notch this year? The solution is simple: Cheese. Not just any cheese; awesome cheese. Cheese makes everything better. That’s why Josh Gentine, a third-generation member of the Sargento Foods legacy, founded The Big Cheese Co. Well, that, and he got his hands on some extra-sharp, 12- to 15-year aged Wisconsin cheddar. According to Gentine, cheese ages like fine wine, getting sharper and more complex with each passing year. He maintains his cheddar is “the sharpest you’ve ever tasted,” adding jokingly, “it’s so sharp it has a British accent, and it was so good that it was worth starting this new company.” With that in mind, here are three tips for making this year your cheesiest ever. Tip 1: Sharpest surprise Cheese is the perfect gift. “Cheese is our common denominator,” says Gentine. “There are only two types of people in this world: People who already love cheese and people who need to try The Big Cheese.” With The Big Cheese, blocks are sent directly to your doorstep, so you can send a little love without leaving the sofa. A 2.5-pound block to your foodie aunt, a 5-pounder to the family of four. A 40-pound behemoth sent directly to the door of your friend who’s always entertaining (or will be, once that’s safe again). It’s an unexpected gift that you can be confident will be enjoyed and not regifted or left to

gather dust in a hallway closet. Tip 2: Charcuterie champion Charcuterie boards have become their own popular subgenre. Some would say a full-fledged movement, with people creating over-the-top, picture-perfect trays packed with premium deli and dairy. The art of the board is all about balance - in color and flavor. Put your folded, reddish cuts of cured meat opposite pale cheeses, next to green olives or grape garnish. Mix and match an assortment of hard and soft cheeses with tapenades and spreads. Temper the salty meats with sweeter fruits like pears or apples. Or keep it simple when you’re looking for something quick and tasty for family movie night. Simply pile up the plate the way they like it, so everyone has options. Pro Pointer: Serve your extra-sharp, aged cheddar (and other cheeses) at room temperature. When cheese is too cold, its taste is muted. By allowing cheese to come to room temperature, you’re allowing its flavors to come out and join the party. Tip 3: Sharpen a family favorite Family recipes that stay the same year after year can become tired or stale, so add a little zing with a cheesy kick. The secret is the sharp cheddar. Adding shreds of the zesty treat brings more complexity to dishes. It’s the perfect way to amp up mac and cheese, bring extra creaminess to grits or polenta, elevate a grilled cheese sandwich, or breathe second life into leftovers like turkey melts. Try the following recipe for a great new take on a family classic.

The Big Cheese Mac & Cheese FROM JESSICA SLOMBERG @NYCFOODCOMA

Ingredients: • 1 and 1/2 cups half-and-half • 16 ounces cream cheese, cubed • 2 cups extra-sharp aged cheddar from The Big Cheese, coarsely grated • 1 pound radiatori pasta (or any fun pasta shape!) Directions: Bring large pot of water to a boil. Once water is boiling, add plenty of salt and 1 pound radiatori pasta. Cook until pasta is al dente (5-10 minutes depending on type of pasta). While pasta is boiling, add 1/2 cup half-and-half to a separate large pot or saucepan and reduce about 15 minutes over low heat. Once cream is reduced, whisk in 16 ounces cream cheese cubes until smooth, then add 2 cups of The Big Cheese. Continue whisking until smooth. When pasta is cooked, strain and transfer to pot containing creamy cheese mixture. Mix until pasta is evenly coated and serve. For more information, visit TheBigCheese.com.

Atrium - Adam Rowe: Knot Theories: An Exploration of Partial-dimensional Geometry
Knots are continuous lines twisted in such a way to give the illusion of lines overlapping in the same plane. Using a formalized system of knot creation, the artwork here represents knots in multiple “in-between” dimensions in three categories, each based on a partial dimension:
 1. Unicursal, self-contained lines which appear to overlap on two-dimensional surfaces
 2. Tiled surfaces of regular polyhedra
 3. Elements of non-orientable surface segments

Adam Rowe is a Knoxville native with a background in print and screen design. He enjoys looking at art in terms of visual problem solving, with a fine arts approach to graphic design. North Wall - Ephemerality: Works by Charlotte Brindley
Charlotte’s artist statement: Beauty can be both resplendent and macabre. I see the goodness of the world, but I also see the darkness. Tragedy and beauty are complimentary enigmas. I hearken back to the Gothic and Italian Renaissance eras of art history for my creations. In some of my paintings, I create works inspired by the tiny pages of illuminated manuscripts on a large scale. Other pieces are more straightforward and symbolic. By breathing life into the illuminated pages of the ancient past, I find inspiration to explore the realms of my imagination. Times long gone by are as familiar as the present. My work explores themes of injustice, impermanence, and depravity but also passion, joy, and what is beautiful beyond words. In the end, my works are an extension of myself and how I see the world around me.

The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors are required to wear masks and refrain from eating or drinking in the galleries. For more information, call 865523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com.

A large-scale stick sculpture exhibition featuring tree saplings weaved into whirling animated shapes, a whimsical model train display traversing tropical plants, and new outdoor activities encouraging wellness are in store this year at Biltmore. Biltmore maintains a health and safety section on www.biltmore.com with the latest Covid-19 updates and mandates. Planned events and activities in the coming year will comply with requirements to reduce the risk of transmission of Covid-19, as the safety of employees and guests is always Biltmore’s highest priority. Biltmore will continue to closely monitor the course of Covid-19, and guests are encouraged to check the website for updates prior to planning a visit. Coming this Spring Guests visiting Biltmore this spring will be lucky to witness an entirely new outdoor sculpture exhibition built by self-described “stick sculpture artist,” Patrick Dougherty. Raised in North Carolina, Dougherty is a sculptor known worldwide who weaves tree saplings into sculptural installations. Dougherty’s interest in carpentry and love of nature inspired him to experiment with tree saplings and learn about building techniques. Guests can view Stickworks Outdoor Sculptures at Biltmore beginning April 1. Back by popular demand, Biltmore Gardens Railway brings a large-scale model railroad and handmade buildings to the Conservatory. Running April 1 through September 26, G-scale locomotives and railcars move along tracks placed around notable estate replicas, traversing bridges and trestles on varied levels in multiple rooms and weaving through the estate’s renowned collection of exotic botanicals. 2021 BILTMORE CALENDAR OF EVENTS Opening April 1: Stickworks Outdoor Sculptures Unique outdoor sculptural works by environmental artist Patrick Dougherty, known as “Stick Man,” will reside in Antler Hill Village starting April 1. His grandfather, Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt, spent his life building an empire based on shipping and railroad concerns. Hundreds of feet of track carry G-scale locomotives and railcars through multiple rooms in Biltmore’s Conservatory and weave through exotic botanicals and miniature replicas of estate landmarks. Created by Applied Imagination, an award-winning crew of artists, botanical experts, and landscape designers known for exhibitions at the New York Botanical Garden and the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C., the exhibition in the Conservatory is a nostalgic delight. April 1 through May 27: Biltmore Blooms A progression of flowers blankets George Vanderbilt’s estate in color during Biltmore Blooms, an annual tradition that has delighted guests for many decades. Highlighted by thousands of tulips in the historic Walled Garden and across the estate, Biltmore Blooms honors the legacy of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and his accomplishments at Biltmore. Stunning floral arrangements will fill the rooms of Biltmore House, featuring flowers and greenery gathered from estate grounds. April 4: Easter Egg Hunt The Easter Rabbit makes an annual appearance on Biltmore’s Front Lawn on Easter Sunday. Highlighting the day are the grand Easter Egg Hunts. Children ages 9 and younger may attend the hunt for free when accompanied by an estate pass holder or a ticketed adult. July through August on select evenings: Biltmore Concert Series Biltmore House and the Blue Ridge Mountains serve as backdrop for musical experiences during Biltmore’s annual concert series. 3 Pandemic Travel Trends That May Stick Around A RT I C L E C O U RT E S Y O F F F E S

D

U R I N G T H I S PA S T year, Covid-19 has challenged families in multiple ways. Many had to cancel or reschedule trips during the pandemic due to healt h concer ns and t r avel restrictions, which meant not only missing out on quality time with loved ones, but also skipping the mental health and selfcare benefits of going on vacation. Although 61% of families had a trip canceled due to the pandemic in 2020, travel is still on most people’s agendas, as 82% of families already have travel plans in mind for this year, according to the 2021 Vrbo (Vacation Rentals By Owner) Trend Report. This report, which includes vacation rental marketplace data, as well as survey data from family travelers, also revealed some travel habits that arose during the pandemic that are likely to remain popular throughout 2021. “Let’s face it, the pandemic makes it tough to predict what travel will look like in 2021,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “That’s why we combined search and demand trends with a first-of-its-kind traveler survey of U.S. families. The combination gives us the most accurate picture possible of the plans families are making.” Consider these pandemic-era trends as you move forward with your vacation plans: Staying in the Driver’s Seat With travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines in place throughout much of 2020, many families opted to avoid flying and visiting crowded places by jumping in the car and hitting the open road instead. This trend is likely to continue in 2021, with 59% of families saying they are more likely to drive instead of fly on their next trip. A change of scenery can be refreshing and

motivating after staring at the same four walls in your home, so consider taking a road trip and exploring a new destination, even if it’s not that far from home. Mixing Work and Play Many people were forced to adapt to working from home or facilitating e-learning for their children due to Covid-19. While turning homes into makeshift offices or classrooms wasn’t an easy task for many families, the schedule flexibility provided by the remote setup allowed for the rise of the “Flexcation” - mixing of vacation time with virtual work and school. In fact, 1 in 3 families surveyed said they were able to travel because they were working from home, and 52% of those who took a Flexcation during the pandemic found the experience refreshing, with 67% saying they would do it again. Seeking Wide Open Spaces Many travelers gravitate toward vacationing in peaceful and picturesque destinations, and the open sky, fresh air, and scenic views may be even more appealing amid the pandemic. According to the report, 61% of U.S. families said they are more likely to visit an outdoorsy destination than an urban one, and 54% are more likely to head to a national park than an amusement park. With the variety of vacation rental properties available, families are better able to customize their home-away-from-home experience. • Would your trip be more enjoyable if your pet could stay with you? • Is the perfect breakfast on a screened-in porch or a picnic table by a stream? • Thinking of sunny Florida and a rental with a private pool? (one of Vrbo’s most sought-after vacation amenities) • Would access to a dock so the kids could swim be ideal? • Are nearby hiking trails a must? Or maybe a boat rental? • Longing for the Sevierville mountains and an outdoor barbecue? (one of Vrbo’s most sought-after vacation spots) • Maybe a comfortable chair, a book, and a deck with a beautiful view are all you need? As this year opens up, follow the vacation trends - load up the car, take a computer for work or school, and head to the great outdoors! Find more ideas for planning your next vacation - or Flexcation - along with the full Trend Report at www.Vrbo.com. Photos courtesy of Pexels

Getting Ready to Get Ready? A

Business Note

BY BRETT CAFFERTY

S I WRITE this note to myself, I am reminded of a most basic human character trait we can easily accept as being part of our nature - procrastination. Put if off until later, deal with it tomorrow, awaiting more information, deferring to others, or simply not acting due to being unsure of a positive outcome. There are many professionals in the small business world who are creative, capable, hard-working people that fully believe in the work or service they offer but have a difficult time translating good intentions to tangible actions and often spend far too much time getting ready to get ready. Sound familiar? In speaking with a fellow business owner recently, I was reminded of some basic principles from my early days in sales that I thought were worth sharing as a gentle reminder, myself included: Swing the bat – Having been in sales roles in several industries, and also experiencing the challenge of hiring, managing, and coaching, this is the #1 rule that can be applied universally in all aspects of life. From a business perspective – the more activity, the more contacts made, the greater the chances for success. The learning curve is greatly improved, and patterns of behavior are established

that reinforce a “get out and do it” mentality. It also develops a resiliency that, when the days (or months, or year) get tough, the default mindset is to press on, get up, and keep going. When all else fails, follow the plan – The business owner I was speaking with is starting a new venture, and we talked about the challenges of a new industry and a sole proprietorship - from making new contacts to how to market yourself and all the uncertainties of “will this actually work out?” Referring to lessons learned over the years that have been reinforced by mentors, co-workers, and authorities on the subject, when discouraged or in doubt, do the next thing. Regardless of the type of business or venture, there should be a basic “recipe” of activities that, when done on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, will lead to results. This plan should be simple, easy to track, and easily shared with others for feedback or accountability. When the days are long and you get discouraged, the simple act of following your plan by doing the next thing will result in a mental “boost” to help your attitude and perspective. From one procrastinator to another (and isn’t that all of us at one time or another?) - keep it simple, have faith in your plan, and swing the bat!

Top Botox Questions Answered B

OTOX IS AMONG the most common procedures performed at Southeastern Dermatology. If you are considering Botox, here’s everything you ever wanted to know and how this popular treatment can work for you. First, what is Botox? Botox and similar products share a common ingredient, botulinum toxin. When injected, these toxins block muscles from contracting by stopping chemicals that signal movement. Doctors call these products neuromodulators. Sound scary? It isn’t. When used by expert injectors like Dr. Doppelt and Kathy Deatherage, BSN, RN, CPSN, CANS, Botox has many cosmetic and medical applications. How does Botox work? By blocking these nerve impulses, Botox is able to keep certain muscles from tightening. This activity is what causes certain lines and wrinkles on the face, such as the lines between the eyebrows (also known as glabellar lines or “11s”). With continued use, these lines can be reduced dramatically or even eliminated from the face. What can Botox be used for medically? Botox has 11 therapeutic indications. Botox isn’t new to the treatment scene: It was first approved in the 1980s, according to information from the Cleveland Clinic. The first FDA-approved use for Botox was to treat conditions like uncontrolled blinking and lazy eye. It was soon used for cosmetic treatments, too. Botox is a diverse treatment that has been used for a variety of medical and cosmetic applications for more than 30 years. What can Botox be used for cosmetically? Even with so many medical applications, Botox might be best known for its cosmetic indications. From smoothing out lines to fixing a gummy smile, Botox has many cosmetic uses: • Crow’s feet: Wrinkles that form on the outside corners of your eyes. • Forehead lines: Creases created by lifting eyebrows and expressive movement. • Frown lines: Usually perpendicular lines between your

eyebrows caused by the repeated action of underlying muscles. Often called the elevens, because they look like the number 11. • Lip Flip: Injections into your upper lip to relax the muscles and “flip” your lip upward, giving your lip a fuller appearance. How much does Botox cost? The cost of Botox varies. This is because Botox pricing is based on how many units are used. A unit of Botox might only cost $10 or $15. However, your total cost for Botox depends on how many units are needed to treat your specific concern. For example, treating lines on the forehead between the eyes might take 20 or 30 units. Smaller areas, like crow’s feet, require fewer units of Botox and will likely cost less. When you’re considering the cost of Botox, it’s important to be aware that you get what you pay for. It may be tempting to find the place with the lowest Botox cost, but extremely low prices actually aren’t a good sign. The Botox might be diluted if you are paying far below the average cost of treatments. Additionally, the person administering low-cost Botox might not have the skills and experience to give you the results you expect. This increases the risk of complication and serious damage to your skin and muscles. Will I still look natural after Botox injections? Botox looks very natural when administered by a skilled medical professional. When done correctly, you’ll look natural with fewer lines and wrinkles after treatment. How long does Botox last? For most patients, the results of Botox can last three to four months. Does Botox hurt? Botox is administered via an injection. The feeling might be similar to a small bee sting. However, your provider can reduce the discomfort of Botox injections by using a topical numbing cream. Still have questions about Botox? We have answers. Dr. Doppelt is prepared to offer the answers and solutions that only a board-certified dermatologist can provide. Give us a call at 865-474-8800 or schedule an appointment online at www.DrDoppelt.com.
