As the owner of Synergy Auto Wash, Brian Davis has built his business into Knoxville's largest full-service Express Hand Wash which is family-run, excelling in customer service, quality, and competitive prices. Brian invites you to stop in and see the Synergy difference for yourself.

From the Publisher SPRING IS THE SEASON when

we seem to focus on our home’s interior and exterior, as well as landscaping and garden areas. It’s time to do a thorough house cleaning with organization of closets and storage areas. Windows need washing, carpets require cleaning, walls could use painting, and there is a variety of household repairs that have been waiting for attention. Plus, during the winter, our garages, outdoor storage areas, and decks have been neglected. With the warmer weather we become more motivated to attend to all those chores we’ve placed on our spring “to do” lists. This month Everything Knoxville focuses on the home and home improvements and enhancements all meant to get you motivated to eliminate those chores on your list. You’ll find services for your home and landscape, and even your garage can look its best. We have it all in this edition. 4

Besides focusing on our home, spring is a great time to get your vehicle looking its best by getting all the winter dirt and grime removed both outside and inside. This month we have highlighted the services that Synergy Auto Wash offers to help keep your vehicle clean. Brian Davis, owner of Synergy Auto Wash, outlines the services he has for his unique hand washing car wash and also gives us insight into his second and newest location. Plus, seeing that this is a family business, you will meet Price, Brian’s son, and Jolene, Brian’s mom. Spring is all too short here in East Tennessee, so make the most of the mild weather and maximize your time outdoors. We have all the resources in this edition to help you find the products and services you need to make outdoor living and spring spruce up enjoyable.

HAT ORIGINALLY BEGAN as a dare

has resulted in Knoxville’s largest full-service Express Hand Wash. Walking into a room full of friends a few years back, Brian Davis voiced his displeasure with the car wash he had just visited. “Half of the dirt was still on my vehicle, and, worse yet, I received poor service and scratches on my vehicle,” he said. Brian’s friends, having heard him complain about the poor service levels at area auto washes before, offered him a challenge. If he didn’t like the service he was receiving, then start his own car wash. Sort of “put up or shut up.” Accepting their challenge, Brian launched Synergy Auto Wash in mid 2012. In this issue, we are pleased to feature Brian, owner of Synergy Auto Wash and local entrepreneur. EK: So Synergy Auto Wash was in fact launched in response to a challenge from a group of friends? Brian: Absolutely! Plus I like to keep my car clean. There just isn’t any place in town that meets my expectations no matter what wash package I purchase, and with my busy schedule I just don’t have time to clean my vehicle myself. As I soon discovered, there were thousands of other car owners that shared my experience. EK: So you transformed a former car wash into Synergy Auto Wash’s all-new wash system? Brian: Yes. I designed Synergy to be not only the perfect car wash, but also a beautiful place where people could come and be comfortable. EK: Synergy Auto Wash still uses a “tunnel” that most automobile owners are familiar with. What’s different? Brian: Although we use a conveyor system like most car washes, initial looks are deceiving. First off, our conveyor is a state-of-the-art, low profile conveyor that allows us to wash many vehicles that other washes can’t place on their conveyor. Secondly, once your vehicle enters our wash, you’ll discover what truly makes Synergy Auto Wash unique. All of the old equipment, still in use in most car washes today, has been removed. We have replaced all of this old technology with trained associates that literally hand wash your vehicle as it makes its way down the conveyor. No equipment ever comes in contact with your vehicle. EK: Why is it important that no automated equipment touch your car?

Photos by D. Roberts Photography

Brian: Since we have no equipment that comes in contact with your vehicle, we can proudly say that we don’t have to worry about damaging vehicles in our tunnel. Secondly, I can’t imagine anyone feeling comfortable watching mitters, side brushes, and spinning wraps that are found in most conventional car washes contact the filthy vehicle in front of them and then wash their car with the same dirty “soft cloths.” The dirt and grime from the vehicle ahead of you, which can adhere to all of this equipment, can damage your car’s finish. Hand washing is the only safe and thorough way to clean a vehicle. EK: Synergy Auto Wash is also a family affair. Explain your mother’s role. Brian: This has proven to be the best reward after making the decision to open Synergy, because I get to work with my mom, Jolene, nearly every day. Also, our customers love her. It is amazing how many people come in just to see

her. No matter what day of the week or how busy we are, she always has a smile on her face. EK: What other services do you offer at Synergy Auto Wash? Brian: To make things easy for our customers, we’ve put together a menu of services. We offer four basic washes that range from $8–$26 (tax inclusive). If you find yourself in need of additional services or you’re in the mood to pamper yourself, we have an A La Carte menu that consists of things such as a buff wax, carpet shampoo, leather cleaning and conditioning, dash, door panels, and console protectant, and other services to help keep your vehicle looking showroom new and protected. EK: What else would you like our readers to know about Synergy Auto Wash? Brian: We are building this business on three principles: 1. We offer a full-service wash facility concept that nobody else in East Tennessee offers, nor can compete with, and we offer it at a price

unavailable elsewhere. 2. With the help of our manager, Keith, my mom, and I, we take great pride in our customer service and guarantee it to be the best in town. 3. We are committed to delivering the best quality wash available. If you aren’t satisfied, then your wash is free. EK: You said that once someone tried Synergy Auto Wash, you had a customer for life. Why? Brian: It is amazing to hear all the positive comments we receive every day. We have people that drive from Halls, Maryville, Rockwood, Kingston, Oak Ridge, and Fountain City to take advantage the superior customer service we offer. When we see a customer for the first time, it is usually only a matter of days or weeks before we see them again. EK: Are there any plans to open an additional Synergy Auto Wash location in the Knoxville area? Brian: Yes, we have just purchased a location in Morristown that we are going to convert to our concept, and we are on the search for property in the Knox and Blount County areas as well. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Brian: If someone asked me, “Why should I try Synergy Auto Wash?” I would say this: We are a family-run, small business that excels in customer service and quality. We hand wash every vehicle in the safest possible environment, and all at a price competitive to our competition. We invite you to see the Synergy difference for yourself.

F YOU AND YOUR SPOUSE are between

ages 62 and 66 and intended to use a Social Security claiming strategy to maximize your benefits, the window is closing on this opportunity. With little notice or public review, last October’s Federal budget bill quietly reduced the choices you have as to how to maximize your Social Security benefits. Two key claiming strategies are phasing out: (1) File and suspend, which allowed a retiree to file just long enough to trigger his spouse’s eligibility to claim a spousal SS benefit and then quickly suspend to keep his benefit growing at 8% per year until age 70, and (2) the restricted application for spousal benefits only, where a spouse, at her full retirement age, could elect just a spousal SS benefit while letting her own continue to grow at the same 8% per year until age 70. There is a window of time for people close to retirement age to still take advantage of these two major strategies, but the first deadline is quickly approaching on May 1, 2016. Let’s break it down by your birthday: Group 1: If you are age 66 or older by May 1, 2016, you are in the last group that will be allowed to file and suspend while allowing your spouse to claim a spousal benefit. You must file prior to April 30, 2016! Don’t miss this important deadline. Group 2: If you are age 62 by January 2, 2016, you are in the last group that will be allowed to claim a restricted application for spousal benefits only (which you would do at your full retirement age of 66 and no later than January 1, 2020). Confusing? Please let me help you understand which claiming strategies are still available to you and your spouse. It’s more important than ever. Just provide us with your Social Security earnings statement, and we’ll prepare an analysis for $59. Mention this article and we’ll offer you a discounted price of $39. Or bring a friend and join us at our next Lunch ‘n Learn to learn more.

EMEMBER WHEN the thinking

was that you had to go to Atlanta to “really” shop? That’s where you would find all the latest and greatest. Well, that’s not the case anymore. Knoxville and East Tennessee may be nice Southern areas, but we can get right in there with any of the big cities – especially when it comes to healthcare and skincare. We have access to state-of-the art procedures and products right here in our own backyard. Plus we have speciallytrained professionals to perform those surgical and nonsurgical treatments that help us rejuvenate ourselves and our bodies. Dean Kleto, MD, and Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN, are “homegrown” East Tennesseans who challenge those to find better elsewhere. They have a wide reputation for excellent, caring services for their patients, some of whom actually come here to Knoxville from afar just to see them! That being said, why would anyone want or need to go elsewhere? Dr. Kleto brings excellent training from Duke University and Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital to the surgical arena as he performs a variety of enhancing procedures in his offices in Sevierville and Knoxville or at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Hospital. Ms. St. Germain is recognized by product manufacturers as one of the most sought-after consultants nationally to train physicians and other registered nurses in injection procedures, techniques, and theory. Hers is a highly-developed, astute aesthetic eye that, coupled with her knowledge and skill, brings a natural-looking result when she works with her patients.

Health

BY JA S O N J. H A L L , M D, FA C S

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure FOR YEARS,

the common thinking was that a facelift or eyelid surgery was the only way to eliminate the signs of facial aging. However, as we have learned more about how the face ages and technology has improved, we have many more options for preventing or reversing the aging process in the face. What this means is that small corrections, over time, can prevent or significantly delay the need for invasive, costly facelift or eyelid surgery. The hallmark of a youthful, vibrant face is smooth lines and “full contours.” Look at the beautiful face of one of Tennessee’s own – Reese Witherspoon – as an example. Her face is full, with high cheekbones and smooth transitions from the cheeks to the eyes, from the eyes out to the temples. She has full lips in appropriate proportions and smooth skin without discolorations, fine lines, or other signs of sun damage.

Even skin tone, high cheekbones, and natural appearing lines around the mouth and eyes. If she has filler and/or Botox, it is difficult to tell.

14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2016

Join us for our 2016 Lunch & Learn Series! Wednesdays 12:00 – 1:00 pm » March 30: Fillers & Skin Care: Who needs facial surgery anymore? » April 27: Lasers, Microneedling, and Chemical Peels – Which one is best?

Spaces are limited! RSVP to face@drjasonhall.com or 865-590-9409. What is important is what you DON’T see – any signs of “artificial” anti-aging surgery. We all recognize these, even if we can’t name them: Hollow temples, hollow upper and lower eyelids (the skeletal appearance around the eyes), thin lips, and hollow, sunken cheeks. More importantly, especially in younger women such as Ms. Witherspoon, you don’t see any stigma of “overdone” and fake-looking injectables – “duck” lips, overly full cheeks, and completely obliterated nasolabial folds (the “parentheses” or “smile lines” around the mouth). This is the hallmark of expertly administered treatment: It is so natural looking that it leaves you guessing. As our knowledge of facial aging has advanced, we can now prevent these stigmas of aging by intervening early and preventing loss of volume that is the underlying cause of the eyelid bags, wrinkles, and other early outward signs of aging that shows up in our faces. Injectable fillers, neurotoxins (such as Botox), and topical skin treatments can help prevent the outward signs of aging and reverse the sun damage that accumulates in all of us over time. Using state-of-the-art 3-dimensional imaging technology, Dr. Hall and Brooke Nix, PA-C, can show you areas that have lost volume or are showing significant sun damage. With sophisticated computer modeling, they can also demonstrate what effect various non-surgical

interventions will have and how your appearance will change with each treatment – before you decide to have anything done. The old adage “An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure” is truer nowhere than when it comes to facial aging. We are finding that by intervening early – taking care of the skin by making the daily use of sunscreen a habit, treating early signs of wrinkling with Botox injections, and treating or correcting deficient bone structure with injectable fillers – we can age gracefully and avoid (or completely eliminate) the need for facial surgery in the future.

We would like to welcome our new Aesthetician, CHERYL HOUSER! With more than a decade of experience in Knoxville, we are excited to have Cheryl join our team!

Managing Your Nerves During Market Volatility

Business

Putting Market Corrections Into Perspective

2016 HAS GOTTEN

off to a rocky start. The average investor’s portfolio since August 10, 2015’s high of 2104 is down double digits. Managing your nerves requires putting market corrections into Ali perspective. Market Corrections Swofford, PhD Are Normal » Since 1928, the S&P 500 has experienced corrections of more than 5% about three or four times each year.1 » The average intra-year drop since 1980 has been 14.2%, yet in 27 of those 36 years, annual returns have been positive. 2 Put the News in Perspective » Sensational headlines often aimed to create shock and awe create newspaper sales and news channel ratings. » Long-term market perspectives teach us not to give into emotion. Impulsive decisions when markets decline can be a portfolio killer. Communicate with Your Advisor » Declines in the markets test investors risk tolerance. Make sure your financial strategies and asset allocations are aligned with your long-term objectives and appetite for risk. Conclusions » Market corrections are rarely welcome, although they are a natural part of the overall business cycle and should be taken in stride. » The best response to market fluctuation is careful analysis and prudent shifts where necessary. If you have any questions about how market volatility may affect your portfolio, please give me a call.

Awakening for Women IT IS IMPOSSIBLE

to ignore the message sent when a 1,500-pound horse turns and walks toward you. Perhaps this has never crossed your mind, but Karen Head, founder of Equinection, relies on this certainty to craft self-awareness programs that change lives. With her experienced guidance, people engage with the wondrous spirit of a horse and, from this, recognize their inner strength, insight, and wisdom. Accordingly, a grounding premise of Karen’s work is: Our ability to connect with others depends fundamentally on our ability to connect with our true selves. This level of authentic presence and congruence impacts every aspect of our lives. Awakening is an Equinection workshop that Karen designed specifically for women to deepen self-awareness by building relationships based on integrity and the truth of who they are. “Horses are prey animals,” she said. “They

are sensitive to body language, intention, and emotions.” Their survival rests on trusting their instincts. Horses, by their nature, are curious, forgiving, and nonjudgmental. These innate qualities create aha-moments when a woman experiences authentic, immediate responses to her emotional and energetic presence. Time and again, Karen witnesses women experiencing being one with a horse. “This is when she identifies and easily releases thoughts and feelings that block her experience of joy,” said Karen. “This is when she finds strength in her innocence and stillness within truth.” The interaction sheds light on all relationships and inspires profound personal growth.

“I have learned this one absolute in my work: Personal transformation can begin in a moment of sublime connection with a horse,” said Karen. “There are no words – just an experience of the truth of who you are. You know yourself as an essential part of the whole, unmistakably reflected in the calm and gentle eye of a horse. In this moment, one fulfills a fundamental human calling to live and interact from all that is beautiful.” For more information about Karen and Equinection programs, visit www.equinection.org.

Look for topquality “animal protein,” including chicken, duck, lamb, beef, and salmon. Just listing “meat” suggests low-quality protein. Next, look for animal-protein “meal” – for example, “chicken meal.” Avoid “meat meal” or “poultry meal,” as they are not specific. The closer to the top of the ingredient list that this supporting “meal” appears the better. Whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, and/ or grains and other carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, peas, chickpeas, or sweet potatoes should be the next ingredients. Fresh, unprocessed food ingredients contain nutrients, vitamins, enzymes, and antioxidants. Often a filler ingredient, listed low, will be oatmeal or tomato pomace. Avoid foods that list “by-products” or

“by-product meal.” Although potentially nutritious, unsafe handling and processing methods can render them harmful to your dog. Also avoid “generic” fat and added sweeteners in the ingredients. Finally, food that looks like candy often has low nutritional value. Artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives should not be present. Natural preservatives such as vitamins E and C and rosemary extracts are fine. Also, be sure to check the “best by” date on the label. Along with your veterinarian, John and JeanAnn at Ms. C’s will be happy to provide more information regarding dog nutrition.

of spring with a fun family and educational event at the University of Tennessee Gardens on March 19 from 10 am to 2 pm. This year the Gardens is putting an interesting twist on the traditional egg hunt. Wild birds are beginning to nest for the season. Come learn about their eggs and how to protect and support our feathered friends. Families will learn how to attract birds to their home garden and create natural, springinspired crafts. All kids will leave with a birdhouse, a bird feeder, a bird nest model, and an egg model. Kids will have an opportunity to hunt for 3,000 eggs in the Gardens, some of which have prize tickets. Come dressed in your best and get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny. In partnership with the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee (FACET), Allergy & Asthma Affiliates, and the Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center, our annual Eggstravaganza is food-free. The Eggstravaganza is a family-friendly event and intended for children ages 12 and

under. Bring your Easter basket and a camera! The cost for Eggstravaganza is $6 per child ages 12 and under. Food Benefits

F

OOD, AIR, AND WATER

are essential for survival. There’s no question that good quality air with minimal emissions of pollution, allergens, and mold along with pure spring water with alkalinizing minerals are ideal for optimal health. Understanding which foods provide the most benefits is also necessary to achieve well-being. Let’s start with the basics. Good quality food starts with how it’s grown or produced. Meats should be grass fed. Eggs are best from freely roaming hens that are allowed sunshine, and dairy products shouldn’t contain growth hormones. Fish should be wild caught, preferably from unpolluted waters. Fruits and vegetables should be grown without the use of pesticides or other chemicals. If processed foods are desired, then make sure to read labels. Avoid any processed foods with chemical additives such as preservatives, dyes, sugars, and trans fats. Avoid aluminum cans that aren’t lined with protective coatings, because aluminum can leach from the container. Supporting local farmers improves both individual health and the health of the community. Choosing a fare that best fits your needs can be a dilemma. There are many trendy diets that promise to reduce weight or help us feel and look our best. A few of these are Atkins, Paleo, Vegan, Macrobiotic, or eating according to our blood type. Any of these may fit your needs at some time, but with so many proponents of different diets, much confusion is created. Your goals influence your decision on which diet to follow or what food to choose. Do you want more energy, better health, to lose weight, to look or feel better? Certainly one should think long term when it comes to health. Diets that suggest eliminating grains and legumes from your diet and consist mostly of meat have pitfalls. According to the World Health Organization, “Any diet excluding whole food groups should raise suspicions. The idea of cutting out grainbased foods and legumes is not backed

by science, and eating more meat than is needed by the body certainly has risks.” Consult your health care provider before making major changes in your diet. If you’re looking for more energy, then choose foods that create that. Eating green vegetables is a must. Greens such as kale or collards give calcium for our bones, strength to our nervous system, and an energy boost throughout the day. Vegetables in general are more alkalizing to the body than other foods. So “eat your veggies” is a slogan well worth putting into practice on a daily basis. Burdock is an energy supplying vegetable and can be found in Oriental food stores. It also gives strength and stamina according to Michio Kushi, world-renowned author and lecturer. Burdock can be prepared in simple dishes and eaten as a side dish or added to sushi rolls. Eating whole grains is another energy booster. Whole grains create energy when the body slowly breaks down the complex carbohydrates into glucose without creating spikes in our blood sugar levels. Varieties of whole grains include millet, which is the most alkaline forming grain, and amaranth, teff, quinoa, or black or brown rice. Grains sometimes get a bad rap because of their carbohydrate content, but carbohydrates are needed for proper brain function. The grains that created the negative attention are usually the processed grains like breads, pasta, or white rice. Grains in their whole form should be used. However, remember that quantity destroys quality. Whole grains should consist of 20-40% of your diet depending upon your level of physical activity. Food really matters. In our busy lifestyles, we have made food more of a convenience by stopping at fast food restaurants or using prepared microwave dinners instead of a thoughtful process of using the best foods that positively impacts our daily life and our future. Hippocrates had it right: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Somehow we have forgotten the power that food holds and its benefits.

Should I Be Taking a Statin Medication? THIS IS A QUESTION

I hear from many of my patients. For the past several years, the data has been quite confusing. Doctors checked full lipid profiles, breaking down cholesterol numbers into sub-types of cholesterol and its components. We focused on checking other markers, like high-sensitivity CRP, a measure of inflammation thought to be related to a person’s risk of having a heart attack. We heard reports of side effects and potential long-term dangers from these medications. All of this made the decision about whether or not to prescribe (from the physician’s standpoint) or take (from the patient’s perspective) one of these medications. In addition, massive numbers of studies have been performed in an effort to try to give guidance in this area – many with seemingly conflicting results. Fortunately, in 2013, a large consensus panel of experts (collectively called the Blood Cholesterol Expert Panel) from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) released a new set of recommendations based on studying only evidence-based, randomized controlled studies (RCT) to try to collate a “best of current knowledge” series of recommendations aimed at reducing the

risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) for those over the age of 21. Their recommendations might surprise you. Gone are the days when a doctor looks at your total cholesterol, notices a number of 200, notes a family history of heart disease, and prescribes a statin. Today’s recommendations are based on a number of factors, and the LDL (or “bad” cholesterol) number is not even taken into consideration in the calculation. Risk is calculated based on a person’s age, gender, race, total cholesterol, HDL (or “good” cholesterol), systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading), and medical history – specifically whether or not one is currently on treatment for hypertension, is diabetic, or is a smoker. These factors are calculated together to arrive at a 10 year risk of developing ASCVD, and that risk is compared to the individual’s risk if they were on maximized therapy (with a low, moderate, or high intensity statin medication). Based on the result of the comparison, a recommendation is made on whether or not a statin would be beneficial. The finer points of the recommendations are beyond the scope of this article. Suffice

it to say, however, that just because in the past a statin might not have been recommended for you doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s still the case. All persons up to age 75 with a known history of ASCVD should be on high dose statin therapy unless there’s a contraindication. In addition, most all diabetics (with few exceptions) should also be on a statin. The panel recognized that new data and studies are constantly being done in this area and will be periodically reviewing the data and revising the recommendations. For now, the answer to the question of whether or not you should be on a statin is, “It depends.” Your best bet is to meet with your physician, ask them to calculate your ASCVD risk using the new guidelines, and then have an informed discussion about the results. It could just help save your life!

Beach Essentials AFTER A DECEITFULLY WARM

winter followed by a few surprisingly cold weeks, we’re ready for beach weather. Salty air, sand, and piña coladas are what are on our mind, especially when we walk through the doors at elle BOUTIQUE. One glance at the new bikinis, cover-ups, and cool shades when we walk in has us inspired to book our next vacation to the tropics. elle BOUTIQUE introduced us to the most divine lounge wear line, Eberjey, in 2015, and we have been hooked ever since. Now, lucky for us, elle is introducing us to Eberjey’s swimwear line. Each piece embodies a feminine, girly, and bohemian vibe. The bikinis and swimsuits are designed to fit and flatter real bodies and feel good, too. Eberjey also designs elegant, easy tunics and cover-ups that offer just the right amount of coverage (and a serious dose of chic, too).

Of course no beach vacation is complete without a pair of cool, classic shades. Red’s Outfitters specializes in luxurious sunglasses handmade in Italy. The collection is infused with American heritage and style while maintaining Italian, artisanal craftsmanship. Sunglasses are no longer just an accessory; they are an essential to polish off any look!

The message evokes joy, a spirit of playfulness, personal freedom, selfdiscovery, and unconditional love that is more powerful than the mind’s ability to interfere with the present moment. Taking an uncommon responsibility for what she does, her newest collection of textile works reveals not only her talent as an experienced and exceptional artist, but accomplishes her desire to touch the viewer in such a simplistic way that the message will speak so loud for itself that generations will cherish its simple truth. Views of Reality,” a new exhibition showcasing nearly 50 paintings by Brandon Douglas, Catherine Haverkamp, and Seth Haverkamp. The exhibition highlights these artists’ shared love of family, creation, and realism and will be displayed in the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, March 4-24. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. A public reception will take place March 4 from 5 to 9 pm, when the public is invited to meet the artists and view their paintings. The reception also features a Jazz Jam Session hosted by Vance Thompson and Friends from 7 to 9 pm in the Black Box Theatre. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be available. In addition to working as a firefighter and paramedic in Knox County for 13 years, Brandon has spent the last nine years honing his craft as a realist painter. For the past two years, he has furthered his techniques and skills under Seth’s guidance. Painting portraits is Brandon’s passion, because the process allows him to identify with someone else, which enables him to analyze himself

on a deeper level. His wife and young daughter inspire much of his work, and he hopes his paintings impart the beauty he witnesses every day. Like her husband Seth, Catherine’s four children inspire much of her artwork. While she took an 11-year hiatus from professional painting to raise her children, she resumed her career as an artist three years ago. A self-taught artist, she honed her skills at Cleveland Institute of Art and Memphis College of Art. A gifted portrait and landscape painter, Catherine has received several notable awards. Seth has received commissions from sev-

Before moving to Knoxville, he spent a year studying at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia under renowned painter Nelson Shanks and then moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked under celebrated artist Robert Liberace. Much of Seth’s artwork reflects the complexity of childhood, highlighting both the innocence and profound introspection of a child’s mind. Natural Solutions for Everyday Living I

F YOU ARE LIKE most people

today, you are trying to find natural alternatives for daily living. With all the toxins that are in our environment, household products, body care products, and food supply, it is no wonder we are searching for something different. Behold essential oils, nature’s little gift. As Doterra Wellness Advocates, Amanda and I made the transition to essential oils, organic diets, and natural cleaning and body care products, and there was no looking back. We spent a lot of time researching and learning. Knowledge is power. We began using essential oils for everyday health challenges, cooking, cleaning, mood management, and more. We discovered that there were hundreds of ways to use them. We even use them

in our garden to keep our plants healthy and pest-free. We love to teach people to empower themselves and take control of their health. You really do have a choice. You have the choice to learn and educate yourself and others. Essential oils are very economical to use, and the benefits are countless. As we approach spring, there are a variety of applications for the oils. It is a great time to come and learn about them. They can ease “Seasonal Respiratory Discomfort.” Try diffusing lemon, lavender, and peppermint to combat pathogens/histamines in the air. While working outside, try wearing a wet bandana with one drop each of lemon lavender and peppermint around your neck. You can learn about all the wonderful ways

essential oils can be used in the spring and summer months by attending our “Essential Oils for Spring and Summer” class on March 3rd. You will learn how to use them for outdoor activities, gardening, spring cleaning, and cooking. Just imagine using dill or rosemary essential oil in your favorite potato salad recipe. It is mighty tasty. Stop in and let us give you an essential oil experience and answer any questions you may have. If you are coming to class, please RSVP, as space is limited.

Justin Goodbread, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Eliminating the Uncertain

W

HILE MOST INVESTMENT

professionals would agree that political seasons create uncertainty, this year’s political races will likely only serve to heighten the already high level of uncertainty that already exists in today’s investment marketplace. Add to this the uncertainty surrounding months of stock market declines and a federal reserve that many feel has lost its way and you have an unprecedented level of investor anxiety that puts in doubt the security of millions of Americans at or near retirement. So just how can an investor navigate their way to financial independence with all of today’s uncertainty? The answer to that question for many can actually create an even greater level of anxiety because there are hundreds – no, thousands – of financial advisors each claiming to have answers to your financial questions who only offer piecemeal advice to otherwise complex situations. And because investors often receive conflicting advice, uncertainty and hope for economic security in retirement are placed in doubt. So just who can you trust? Heritage Investors, a Knoxville-based wealth management firm, offers qualified entrepreneurs and retirees a comprehensive approach to financial planning. Unique in their approach, Heritage Investors founders, Justin Goodbread and Jim DeTar, both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™, were featured in the December 2014 issue of Forbes magazine highlighting their successful 34

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2016

boutique-style of financial planning. Everything Knoxville recently interviewed both Justin and Jim to learn more about Heritage Investors. EK: Justin, tell our readers how your recent Forbes magazine feature came about. Justin: Forbes contacted us in the fall of 2014 stating that they had researched our firm and wished to feature us in their magazine. The article focused on the unique boutique style of planning that we provide our clients. The Forbes editor further expressed interest in a Wealth Management company, such as Heritage Investors, that considered their clients as friends. With a low client to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ratio, we have the unusual opportunity to develop a full understanding of our clients’ goals, dreams, and risk tolerance and time to socialize. EK: Help our readers understand the difference between a financial advisor and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. Jim: There are many in the investment community who use the title of financial advisor. However, very few of these advisors qualify as CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™. Many investors are unaware that financial advisors are often not required to have more than a high school education. A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®), on the other hand, must complete a core curriculum, have achieved at a minimum a bachelor’s degree, passed a comprehensive two-day board examination, and have earned

the required experience in the financial marketplace. EK: Why is the distinction between a financial advisor and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ important? Justin: When investors search for investment advice, they discover the multitude of industry designations often assigned to advisors that litter the investment landscape. It’s a literal alphabet soup of acronyms, many of which can be acquired with a little more effort than paying a fee for the right to use the designation. With the CFP® designation, investors can have the confidence they deserve knowing that the professional they are searching for has proven themselves to a very knowledgeable third party, in this case the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Board. The Board has “Certified” the practitioner as an individual who has passed the knowledge, background, and experience required to qualify as a CFP®. EK: Please describe your average client. Justin: We have the unique privilege to work with the greatest clients in the world. Because of the limited, exclusive nature of our business, our planning clients are not panicking or stressing about the current economic events. To some extent, we were expecting the tumultuous days, and our planning clients know exactly how these events will affect their long-term plans. Our clients are educated, goal oriented, ordinary folks who value a personal, intimate relationship with their CFP®!

Jim DeTar, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

nty in Financial Planning EK: Jim, you’ve stated that you help your clients create a comprehensive financial plan in a non-sales environment. Why is that important? Jim: When a prospective client meets with Heritage Investors, they first meet with Justin and me. We have deliberately built our company around a limited number of clients in order to maintain a low client to CFP® ratio. The success of our clients and Heritage Investors is not dependent on serving a huge client base. What we offer are comprehensive planning services to our clients in a non-sales environment. In the sales type environment, clients are often encouraged to participate in the advisor’s model portfolio, indexed annuity, or whatever is hot at the moment, often in the absence of a comprehensive plan. That’s not us. EK: Heritage Investors maintains a ratio of one CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ to a maximum number of planning clients, currently 25. Why should this be important to your clients? Justin: It is not uncommon in the financial world for investors to feel like they are just one more client to their advisor. Many advisors attempt to service hundreds or even thousands of accounts or clients, making them just one more client. We decided that at Heritage Investors, we did not want to be all things to everyone, but rather all things to a few clients. EK: How would you differentiate the type of comprehensive financial plans that you as a CFP® create for your clients from those

plans that are commonly prepared by financial advisors? Jim: Many financial advisors offer advice focused on a product or service that they or their company offer. As the old adage goes, if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Our independent CFP’s® develop plans that are indeed comprehensive in nature. Our plans include the complete financial picture of our clients. And because many of our clients are also business owners whose largest asset is often their business, we offer advice on improving their business’s performance just as we would their investment portfolio. Tax planning, debt planning, P&L planning, and budgeting are just a few areas that we examine when preparing a comprehensive financial plan for our clients. EK: Financial advisors are typically paid commissions on the financial products they sell. How are the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™ at Heritage Investors compensated? Justin: The simple answer is we are fee based. Most of our income is derived from annual fees for planning or fees for asset management. We prefer this method of compensation, as this places us into a fiduciary relationship with our clients. If a client’s financial plan calls for a product or service that generates a commission, our clients are fully involved in the decision making process. EK: If our readers would be interested in learning more about the benefits of a

comprehensive financial plan prepared by a CFP® and Heritage Investors, how can they learn more? Jim: Our website is www.heritageinvestor. com and our direct number is 865-690-1155. Your readers may also wish to follow us on Twitter @knoxadvisor, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube @heritageinvestor, or our blog at www.planningisfun. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Justin: Our passion is our careers and those that we serve, and we have been blessed with the best clients in the world. Being a part of their lives and watching them achieve their goals has been personally rewarding. If you have experienced the frustrations resulting from the uncertainties of today’s roller coaster investment marketplace and you are ready for a more personal and comprehensive approach to your financial future, I invite you to call us for confidential, complimentary interview today.

Oriental Rug Washing The Best Just Got Better

I

N ORDER TO MEET your growing

demand, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has recently completed improvements to our West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, where we pamper your rugs. We now have twice the washing capacity that we previously had and we have also enhanced our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process. Most customers believe that the first step in Oriental rug washing is to just “clean” their valuable rugs. Well, that’s only partially correct, as the first step should be to “safety clean” your fine Oriental and area rugs. Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-towall cousins, which are machine manufactured to exact standards using synthetic fiber and color fast dyes. Oriental rugs, on the other hand, are usually hand woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using conventional carpet cleaning methods. These cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs. Successful Oriental rug washing combines two important items – decades of experience and a stateof-the-art multi-step washing system that uses specially treated water, which significantly reduces the potential damage to your rugs. Simply put, there is no replacement for experience and a proven washing system.

$50 OFF ORIENTAL RUG WASHING (Certain Restrictions Apply) Expires 3/31/2016

If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit us online at www.superiorofknoxville.com and view our informative three minute video to discover the Superior of Knoxville Oriental rug washing difference. For all of your Oriental rug washing needs and upholstery and carpet cleaning, trust the one company with more than 25 years of experience that has put “superior” back into cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning of Knoxville.

enough to keep up with my very active college aged kids but old enough to remember a time when businesses placed a high level of emphasis on customer service. Unfortunately, many of us often feel those days are behind us. When my family launched Fish Window Cleaning here in the Knoxville, Blount, and Loudon County areas, we made a decision to provide the level of customer service that exceeded our customers’ expectations. A level of customer service that our customers thought no longer existed today. Window cleaning is not just a job to us – it’s our profession. Each of our technicians is highly trained and skilled to provide you with perfectly clean windows, whether at your place of business or in the tranquil environment of your home. All we leave behind is a level of customer service that is designed to exceed your expectations and perfectly clean windows. But windows are not all we do. Fish Window Cleaning also provides these additional cleaning services for both residential and commercial customers: » Storm windows » Skylights » Mirrors » Screens » Gutters » Window sills » Ceiling fans » Chandeliers » Pressure washing We also offer annual maintenance packages and are fully insured and bonded. If you have windows, gutters, screens, ceiling fans, skylights, window sills, mirrors, and chandeliers that require attention or pressure washing needs, why give up your kid’s soccer match or your golf outing? HE COST OF TERMITE repair is HIGHER than the cost of termite control. Known as “silent destroyers” because of their ability to chew through wood, flooring, and other materials undetected, termites start to swarm as the weather turns warmer. They prefer to set up camp in hidden places such as baseboards, behind walls, structural framing, and underneath flooring. Some favorite entry points for termites to get into your home are through cracks, expansion joints, foam insulation below ground, inside or between hollow brick or concrete blocks, and through spaces around plumbing pipes. Because a termite colony can grow to about 10,000 in population, imagine how much damage they can do while eating 24/7 – damage that is not covered by your homeowners’ insurance policy! The National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause $5 billion in property damage each year and recommends using a professional pest control company to evaluate what type of treatment is needed for the severity of the infestation, the species of termite, and the construction of the home. Dayton’s does termite inspections for FREE, and the earlier termites are identified, the sooner you can stop the damage they can cause. New customers will receive $150 OFF a Termidor® HP Injection System through April 2016. Other services Dayton’s provides include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, carpenter bee control (April-Aug), mosquito control (May-Oct), pest control for ants/wasps/bedbugs, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/ mitigation. In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments by creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide a solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting insects that come out in the evenings. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is requiraed. For more information about all of your retractable screen options, call 865-919-1615 or visit www. tennesseescreens.com.

Seal Your Spring Cleaning Efforts

I

S YOUR TILE DINGY? Does your

tile and grout refuse to succumb to your best cleaning efforts? Why is cleaning tile and grout so difficult? How can you keep it clean once you GET it clean? Here’s the scoop… chemicals cause soil and dirt to build up over time and get pushed down into your floor as you mop. The more you mop, the more build-up occurs, which over time causes your tile to look dull and your grout lines to discolor and darken. Much of the dirt you are attempting to remove actually becomes trapped within your floors, which often requires special equipment to dislodge. While you may be successful in removing the uppermost surface dirt, anything that gets into the pores creeps deep within your floors, which leads to staining and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Marble, granite, and polished natural stone are especially sensitive to cleaning solvents and result in permanent damage. If you aren’t comfortable cleaning your floors or your high-traffic areas are a concern, it’s time to call a professional. John at Surface Doc gets more requests for tile and grout cleaning than any other service his

company offers. Surface Doc uses a four-step restoration process: High heat, eco-friendly emulsifiers and purified water, adjustable pressure, and contained suction. Afterwards, the homeowner may opt to seal. Sealing is a great way to keep those professional results for years after your initial cleaning. If your floors are already clean, you may wish to have them sealed before any damage is done. The best way to test whether your grout needs resealing is to place a few drops of water on the grout line and see if it remains on the grout surface or soaks right in. If it disappears, it’s time to reseal. Using a quality sealer will ensure that newly cleaned

Tips to Freshen Your Home’s Interior GREET SPRING

by looking at your home from a fresh perspective! Often we become complacent with our surroundings. We come, we go, and never take a second look at our home environment. We should ask ourselves: “Does it feel dated? Uncomfortable? Or just need a little touch of something, but are not quite sure what that ‘something’ is?” We come to you by offering a complimentary consultation to help create a plan tailored to your specific needs, lifestyle, and budget. Here are some ways to look at your home from a fresh perspective: » Spring clean! Clear the clutter, and wash your windows! » Bring some of the outside in. Brighten up an empty vase with fresh spring tulips clumped together in a trumpet vase for a classic but casual feel. » Add some bright colored pillows with pattern to a chair or sofa. » Change out a dark area rug for a lighter or brighter one with an updated, fresh design.

» Use soft window treatments such as draperies or a soft roman shade to lighten the feel and look of your windows. » Paint! Picking a paint color after you have made selections for your room is easier and gives you the best match. If you are looking for additional inspiration to get started, look for our article next month all about the two guest bedrooms Decorating Den Interiors has designed for the Knoxville Symphony Showhouse (April 8-24). Bijou Theatre’s Jubilee 2016 Fundraiser to Feature Drew Holcomb

T

HE HISTORIC Bijou Theatre

welcomes a special performer for its 2016 Jubilee fundraiser, presented by Pilot/Flying J, on March 26 at 8 pm. Nashville-based singer-songwriter Drew Holcomb began honing his musical skills in Knoxville’s clubs and bars when he was a junior at the University of Tennessee. During the next 10 years, Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors built up a national following by playing 1,500 shows across the country, but they regularly returned to Knoxville, a place imbued with personal history and loyal fans. “When we finally made it to the Bijou, it felt like an arrival,” Drew recalls, noting the theater’s famous sound quality, the simultaneous intimacy, and grandeur of the space. “The Bijou is one of the most special places in the world to see and play music.” In addition to being the theater’s most significant fundraiser of the year, this year’s Jubilee is particularly meaningful: 2016 marks the 200th

birthday of the Lamar House, the building that houses the Bijou Theatre and the Bistro at the Bijou restaurant. “The Bijou is more than a concert venue,” says Bijou board president David Arning. “It serves the important role of bringing people together in our community for unforgettable experiences. The Jubilee is how we celebrate that legacy and help secure its future.” At the exclusive VIP pre-show party, guests will enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres from Holly’s Eventful Dining, an Ole Smoky Moonshine signature cocktail, wine pairings from Ashe’s Wine & Spirits, craft beer from Bearden Beer Market, exclusive access to live auction items, including guitars signed by Sam Hunt, Merle Haggard, and Arlo Guthrie and a mandolin signed by The Punch Brothers, plus complimentary drinks from the VIP bar during the show. Proceeds from the 8th annual Jubilee support

the Bijou Theatre, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. In addition to hosting national touring musicians, comedians, dance companies, and literary guests, the theater presents summer acting camps for middle and high school students, as well as the annual Bijou Awards, a youth talent competition showcasing talented teens from Knox and surrounding counties. Reserved general admission seats are $30, plus applicable service fees, and are available at the Tennessee Theatre box office, 865-6841200, Ticketmaster outlets, and online at www. KnoxBijou.com. VIP tickets are $100, available online or at 865-684-1200. A limited number of VIP tickets that include a post-show meet ‘n’ greet with Drew Holcomb are available for $115. March in the Garden I AM SO VERY READY

for spring. I think I have whiplash from the weather fluctuations. My nose is running, my joints are aching, and I am ready for warm weather to stay! My yard is also ready for spring. Some of my Lenten Roses are in full bloom, and my Forsythia is a ray of sunshine. My first daffodil started blooming in January! I want to tell my plants to slow down and not be in such a hurry to grow, but I tried that speech on my kids. It didn’t work. Let’s talk about things you can do outside this month. » I’ll begin with feeding the birds. They are running out of food sources now, so you probably need to refill your feeders daily. Remember that black oil sunflower seed mixes, suet, and other high fat foods are best while it is cold. Bluebirds and other fruit lovers will appreciate a mix with fruit. Finches want niger or thistle seed. Please keep the feeders clean, because moldy seed can be toxic. » It is also time to get nesting boxes

ready for new bird families. Clean out debris from last season and make sure the boxes are in good shape. Repair or replace old, worn out houses. » Early March is a great time for planning and preparing. Plan where you want to plant things this year, and prepare the area by cleaning it up, getting rid of weeds, and mixing in compost or other soil amendments. Apply a pre-emergent such as Preen to keep weed seeds from sprouting, unless you are going to plant seeds in the bed. This is also a good time to do a soil test. » Late March is a good time to plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and vines. Most have awakened from their winter sleep and are ready to start growing. Don’t forget to amend your soil! Also, a little Bio-Tone or root stimulator will help roots get established. » Fresh mulch will keep temperatures and moisture levels stable. For best weed reduction, place several layers of newspaper under the mulch. » Sow cool season vegetables (peas,

cruciferous veggies, and potatoes), and start tender vegetables, herbs, and annuals inside to get a head start. We have seeds and greenhouse kits available so you can satisfy that urge to plant. Be careful not to jump the gun on your planting, however! Many annuals and vegetables should not be planted outdoors until the ground warms up and we are past the average last frost date. » You can plant spring blooming perennials like Candytuft and Creeping Phlox to perk up your yard. » I try really hard to be nice about pruning, folks. What some of you are doing, however, is far closer to butchering than pruning. Crape murder is rampant. If you would like some instruction on how to prune correctly, come to our workshop on March 5th at 10 am. It is free, but please call to register so we will have enough chairs. » Trees, shrubs, and lawn grass can be fertilized now if you are using an organic product such as Holly Tone. If you are using a non-organic, please wait until late March. These cause a more rapid growth spurt, and the new growth can be killed by cold temps. » Wait until late March to fertilize perennials. They also can respond very quickly to fertilizer of either type. » Pansies need a boost after our erratic winter. They are heavy feeders, so either put down fresh slow release fertilize (like Osmocote) or plan on fertilizing with a water soluble product every two weeks. » Don’t forget to feed your bulbs after they bloom to help them store up energy for next spring. Use a good bulb fertilizer or bone meal. Also, don’t cut the foliage off until it yellows! That is how they store up energy for next year. » Grasses and groundcovers can be trimmed back now. Leave a few inches on ornamental grasses to protect the tender new shoots. Lower grasses and ground covers can be trimmed by setting your lawn mower on its highest setting and running over them. » I am convinced that if there is an apocalypse, a green onion will sprout on an asteroid somewhere. It may be joined by chickweed, pop weed, and henbit. In other words, I need to weed, and I am sure you do, too. Herbicides only work on warm days, and for heaven’s sake, don’t spray when it is windy! Besides, weeding is good therapy. That’s it for this month. We have a really wonderful workshop schedule this spring, so sign up early for classes you would like to attend. Let’s get ready for spring!

Shift Your Garage into High Gear

Home

It Starts with the Floor

GONE ARE THE DAYS

when you had to settle for a drab, stained, cement-gray garage floor. Today your garage floor can be as beautiful as any other room in your home. Why consider anything beyond your standardissue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials – from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) – from soaking into the porous concrete. » Fill and cover up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more “‘finished,” and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

of Interior secretaries Signing Ceremony that established the Manhattan Project National Historical Park was held in Washington, D.C., on November 10, 2015. The creation of the nation’s 409th National Park Service unit is welcomed at Los Alamos, NM, Hanford, WA, and Oak Ridge, TN. A Signing Celebration was held in Oak Ridge on November 12, 2015. It included taking 10 buses of the public on enhanced access tours of Y-12’s Buildings 9731 and 9204-3. Touring these buildings is an experience that must remain limited access for some time as operations and security requirements prevent routine access by the public. As access is expected to remain restricted for some time into the future, online virtual tours of these buildings are planned. The Graphite Reactor at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory was also included in the tours. Several other special and highly successful activities were held as a part of the Signing Celebration in Oak Ridge such as the fully attended celebration in the Oak Ridge High School auditorium featuring the Oak Ridge High School chorus and remarks by Mayor Gooch and others. Then there was the gathering in Jackson Square to remake the famous Ed Westcott “War Ends” image with a “Park Opens” one. What a great day of celebration of the establishment of OUR national historical park! You can find the Contact/Visitor Center at the American Museum of Science and Energy located at 300 S. Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge. Niki Nicholas, who is the superintendent of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and Obed Wild and Scenic River, has been given the responsibility for the Manhattan Project National Historical Park – Oak Ridge. In addition to the initial Signing Celebration, two other public involvement activities have been held. On January 26, a Volunteer Orientation was held at the Midtown Community Center where Park Service staff answered questions to let interested individuals know what volunteer opportunities exist and when they can begin to help. More than 120 people attended and packed the Wildcat Den to standing room only. The second public event was on February 1.

NE OF THE MOST

talked about performances at Woodstock (but didn’t make it on the movie) is the 11 song set by Mountain. At the time, the band was mostly noted for their cover of the Jack Bruce tune, Theme for an Imaginary Western, as well as blistering guitar solos by the band’s founder, Leslie West. In the years that followed, the band continued to blaze musical trails, ultimately releasing eight studio and three live albums. Their signature hit became “Mississippi Queen” that has been heard all across the world and used in movies, TV shows, and commercials. West also simultaneously launched a successful solo career, marked by 15 solo albums (16 when you include his new monumental effort, “Soundcheck”). It was for “Soundcheck” that I recently contacted West by phone. I started by asking him how many solo records this made for him. “I think it’s 16 solo albums, believe it or not. I think. Somebody wrote that the other day. I started to count them, but I feel really tired so I’m not going to start to count. Ha! Ha! The good thing is this one I’m really proud of. The sound is great and I’ve got some good people playing on it.” When he says “some good people,” West is referring to people such as Queen’s Brian May, Peter Frampton, Bonnie Bramlett, Jack Bruce, and Joe Franco (via some resurrected studio tapes). When I said that having such a stellar group of artists willing to play on his album certainly said a lot about the respect he has amongst such big names, West said, “On the ‘Going Down’ track with Brian May, a friend of mine was producing at the time, and he got us all together. So when I was doing this album, nobody had ever heard it, I don’t think. The song was written by Don Nix. So when my engineer and I heard it, I was playing the solo on the first half of the song. There was a break, and then Brian played the solo on the second half on out. We put it together and it was great! We’ve got Max Milton playing the intro on piano. I get really excited. That’s probably my favorite guitar song to jam on of all time.” As we talked about the songs on the album, I mentioned how unique his treatment of the old song, “You Are My Sunshine,” was in its contrary delivery. With a chuckle, West shared the background to that version. “I gotta give credit to Sons of Anarchy, because I heard somebody doing it on there. Instead of the major key that sounds so happy, it was in a minor key. I said, ‘Boy, I think I can really do a very, very ‘funerally’ – funeral dirge – some kind of sad version of it.’ I called Peter Frampton, because I’d done something with him the year before. I said, ‘Peter, I’ve got a version of ‘You Are My Sunshine’ that I’d love for you to play with me.’ I sent it to him. It really came out great. I’m really proud of it. “I’ve known Peter 45 years – something like Photo by Justin Borucki

Leslie West that. Even though we’d toured together, we’d never actually played together. He had this tour last year called ‘Frampton’s Circus’. He invited me to play a couple of shows on it. It was the first time we had ever played together. Now we’ve played together twice.” That last comment gave me the opportunity to ask West how he was doing. You may not know that he’s had some serious health problems during the last several years – including the loss of a leg – so I asked how he was doing. His initial remark blindsided me. “I was going to ask you, Randy: Did you find my leg?” Then, on a more serious note, he added, “My balance is terrible, and I haven’t been able to use the prosthetic, so I have to sit in a chair to play,

unfortunately. But it hasn’t stopped me from playing. That’s a good thing. In rehab, they put me on the parallel bars with the prosthetic leg and made me put on the guitar. I put the guitar on, and they wanted to see how long I could stand and play the guitar without falling. I didn’t last 30 seconds. I said, ‘You know, this isn’t going to work on stage. I don’t want to be worrying about falling when I’m trying to play.’ Even though you have a prosthetic, it feels like an alien to you.” Then, after sharing more about his adjustment to losing his leg, he said, “Life is precious, Randy. Thank God for the guitar, right?” Keep up with the latest on Leslie West and Mountain at www.mountainrockband.com. To read the expanded version of this interview, visit www.boomerocity.com. HISTORY

» European settlers first discovered the Roanoke Valley more than three centuries ago. However, the history of the region stretches back thousands of years to geological events that created this vast expanse of ridges and valleys and left alternating limestone and salt deposits in an area that would later come to be known as “Big Lick.” » Animal herds came first, mostly bison, elk, and deer, and then Native American hunters, particularly the Totera tribesmen. » The earliest written evidence of the Roanoke Valley dates from 1671, but local historians date the first settlements to 1740, when Mark Evans and Tasker Tosh claimed the land. » Virginia’s Blue Ridge, like most of the early frontier, was not for the faint-hearted. The salt marshes that once made the valley a

fertile hunting ground were also the cause of countless deaths. » Militias were a necessity against frequent Native American and British raids. General Andrew Lewis, who distinguished himself in the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774, purchased land in then-Botetourt County (later formed into Roanoke County) that eventually encompassed the present limits of the City of Salem. » The City of Roanoke had less auspicious beginnings, although it soon became the busiest commercial center west of Richmond. Once a rough, tawdry outpost along the Wilderness and Great Roads, it was never more than a bumble collection of hamlets, including Gainesborough and Big Lick, until Frederick J. Kimball brought the railroad to town in 1881. » The 19th century was the Age of the Iron Horse. Several railroad companies, including the Virginia & Tennessee, the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio, and the Shenandoah Valley Railroad, were established in this area around the time of the Civil War, but they soon went under. » Several Philadelphia financiers, led by Kimball, realized there was money to be made with the discovery of bituminous coal in West Virginia. » When some enterprising locals got wind of the plan, it took a Paul Revere-esque midnight ride to Lexington with a satchel containing $10,000 to convince the railroad executives to establish the junction in Roanoke. » The grateful locals almost renamed Big Lick after Kimball, President of the newly formed Norfolk & Western Railway, but he instead urged them to rename their city in honor of the river that runs through the valley. (The name comes from a Native American word, “rawrenock,” which refers to white shell beads used to trade.) Thus, Roanoke was born. » As Roanoke was gradually evolving into a bustling center for transportation

and commerce, Salem was developing its own unique character. Designated the seat of Roanoke County when it was carved from Botetourt County in 1838, Salem was an important stopping point for pioneers and traders looking to make their fortune along the western frontier. » Even today Salem, which became an independent city in 1968, maintains an identity completely separate from Roanoke. » When Norfolk & Western merged with Southern Railway, becoming Norfolk Southern, and moved its headquarters elsewhere, the economic future of the Roanoke Valley was left in doubt. During the past three decades, however, the region has emerged as a center for healthcare, banking, shopping, and tourism. » With true pioneer spirit, the valley flourished from nothing more than a salt marsh to become the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

THE ROANOKE STAR

Indians wandering between the parallel ridges of the Allegheny Mountains named their great valley, Shenandoah, “daughter of the stars.” Here, nestled in this beautiful valley, is the progressive-spirited “Star City of the South” – Roanoke. To Kill A Mockingbird at Knoxville Children’s Theatre Now through March 13

KNOXVILLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE

presents To Kill A Mockingbird based on the Pulitzer Prizewinning novel by Harper Lee. The play is being performed March 3 and 4 at 7 pm, March 5 at 1 and 5 pm, March 6 at 3 pm, March 10 and 11 at 7 pm, March 12 at 1 and 5 pm, and March 13 at 3 pm. The unforgettable Pulitzer Prize-winning novel comes to life on the KCT stage, with its unique mix of warm nostalgia and frank realism. The lives of young “Scout” Finch and her big brother Jim are about to change forever when their father, Atticus, a lawyer, is appointed to defend a black man accused of attacking a white teenage girl. Meanwhile, the children become fascinated by their reclusive neighbor “Boo” Radley. All their worlds collide in the sleepy town of Maycomb, Alabama, as its citizens confront their fears and prejudices. Harper Lee’s novel has become one of the most respected books of its era. The book won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and has been labeled “a story of strong national significance.” This adaptation is the same one performed annually in Lee’s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, during the town’s “Harper Lee Days.” The play is performed by 20 talented young actors from ages 8 to 16. The role of Atticus Finch will be played by Sean Sloas, a KCT veteran who returns to the company after numerous local performances. “Scout” is portrayed by Maebel Johnson, a longtime KCT student who is making her stage debut. JeanLouise, the adult version of “Scout,” will be played by Caroline Dyer, a veteran of more than 20 KCT plays. The pivotal roles of the courtroom opponents, Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewing, are played by Derrick Washington, Jr. and Isabelle Hannah. Jim is played by Chase Russell, a KCT newcomer, and the mysterious “Boo” Radley will be portrayed by Jared Watkins. Three actors other than Maebel and Chase are making their KCT debuts: Eric Magee, Zion Olum, and Genevieve Robinson. The rest of the cast includes Cian Bell, Reed Cooper, Lucas Cunic, Nilah El-Amin, Corbin Fram, Kayla June Nobbe, Quintin Rhodes, Lauren Rymer, Leigh Shields, and Simeon Thress. KCT is East Tennessee’s leading producer of stage plays for children. To Kill A Mockingbird is the 74th play to be produced by Knoxville Children’s Theatre. More than 17,000 people attended a KCT play in the last two years. The play is directed by Dennis E. Perkins from a script by Christopher Sergel, licensed by Dramatic Publishing Company. Knoxville Children’s Theatre is located at 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville. Tickets cost $12, and there is a special rate of $10 each when any adult and child enter together. IT’S ALWAYS NICE

when one’s passion coincides with their career and even better when that career is marked by great success. Yilu Liu, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Oak Ridge National Lab, has been newly elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest honors in the profession. “I love science, and gadgets are my passion,” said Yilu. Yilu has been at UTK/ORNL since the fall of 2009. She earned her degrees from Ohio State and Xian Jiaotong University in China. “Every day is new, which is the beauty of the job,” said Yilu. “Most of the day is spent on communication, be it emails, conference calls, meetings, and talking with students, colleagues, industry professionals, and sponsors. technical magazines or papers.” Yilu is also the joint UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair for Power Grids. She’s the fifth member of UT’s College of Engineering to receive the honor of being elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Yilu says her favorite part of her job includes the students. “I love meeting with students and hearing their updates about new ideas, new research results, and even new failures,” she said. “I also like meeting with the industry to hear their problems. Most of them we could not solve, so

we have to pick the few that are solvable.” Yilu has earned many professional honors in her career – she’s also a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, as well as deputy director of the Center for Ultra-Wide-Area-Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks (CURRENT) Engineering Research Center at UT. Yilu says she only wishes she had more time to do all the things that interest her. “There are not enough hours in the day,” she said. “Too many interesting things we could do and not enough bandwidth to work on them all.”

A SWOT Analysis – the acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats – is a structured method used in business to evaluate the internal and external factors that can be favorable or unfavorable to the achievement of your goals and objectives. In use since the 1960s, this type of analysis is just as useful today in evaluating new opportunities, as well as managing and eliminating a wide variety of threats. Surprisingly few small business owners are familiar with SWOT Analysis, and those that are seem reluctant to conduct them due largely to their lack of understanding of how the analysis works and how they can benefit. I have conducted dozens of SWOT Analysis

Despite the apprehension on the part of some of the participants, I can honestly state that each analysis was a success and in many instances led to the implementation of new strategies that resulted in a marked improvement in the performance of these small businesses. Wikipedia has a great description of a SWOT Analysis, and the analysis itself is much easier to conduct than you might

think. I would, however, recommend that you use a facilitator familiar with this process to assist you. The person should be objective and familiar with this technique but also someone who is experienced in your chosen career field. I think you will be both pleasantly surprised and genuinely excited by what you will learn and the potential that exists for your small business. Also, a SWOT Analysis doesn’t require blood tests or medical deductibles.

Tenacity vs. Timidity: This is War WHILE WE ARE DIFFERENT

people, we face similar issues. Family struggles, temptations, illness, setbacks, and just plain old days where our “get up and go” has “gotten up and went.” Each day we face decisions that will produce outcomes: Some predictable, some by chance, and others by necessity. Years ago someone posed a question that still looms in my mind: “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” We were instructed to ask that question prior to any decision. Suddenly I realized that most decisions I’d made were based in fear. Open-ended questions would surface like, What if ? What happens when? I just don’t think I can… what happens if I fail, what will others think? We tend to overanalyze until our brilliant idea suddenly dies a premature death. Prior to that question, I thought I was using wisdom. Turned out that was just a mask hiding the debilitating fear of not having all the answers. There is a war that wages each day between tenacity and timidity. Timidity is easy, but it leaves us on easy street, often bored and unfulfilled.

Tenacity is the quality of being able to grip something firmly. A firm grip means holding on and not letting go. That could be to a person, a vision, a job, or a dream. Tenacity is a kind of relentless strength. Timidity means lacking in self-assurance, courage, or bravery; easily alarmed; timorous; shy. No one is born self-assured or courageous. They become that through trial and error, by making years of decisions that have years of consequences. We build strength by exercising strength. We become strong by acting strong. Just like we become timid by acting timid. Our world produces many “go-with-theflow, don’t ruffle any feathers” people. If that is you and you are happy there, then more power to you. Yet there are those who set themselves apart, longing to be creatively different, willing to make a mistake while being determined to learn from it. Self-assuredness and confidence are wonderful qualities when mixed with humility and gratitude. As this war rages, we must pick a side. We can’t be both timid and tenacious. We must decide which is our goal, then begin

to make the decisions that align with our chosen identity. As decisions arise, think through that original question. “What would I do if I weren’t afraid?” That one thought process changes everything while helping us to grow by properly identifying those areas where fear is crippling our creativity. If you want to reach your full potential, your choice is easy. Blend in with the crowd, or step out and step up. It all starts with an “I can do this attitude.” There are numerous success stories of successful people who simply had an idea and made it happen. Some with great educations and backgrounds and some without. Many have overcome great odds. Your war is just that. Your war. Which do you pick? Timidity or tenacity? Avoid These Parenting Mistakes T HE KIND OF PEOPLE

t h a t c h i l d re n grow up to be is largely dependent upon the environment they grow up in and the parenting they receive. While there are exceptions to every rule, how we parent our children molds their future and how they’ll interact with peers, co-workers, future spouses, and their own children. Here are common parenting mistakes to avoid. No Rules Parenting Every child needs rules. If you don’t give them rules to live by, you’re not giving them guiding principles that’ll help them learn how to function properly inside a family unit or any “unit” at all such as school, work, groups, clubs, etc. No rules parenting doesn’t teach children how to regulate their behaviors and actions, which can pose serious problems now and in the future. On a deeper level, a child who grows up with no rules may seem happy doing their own thing, but at their core, they may feel that no one truly loves them or cares about their well-being. This can lead to emotional, mental, and physical problems.

Inconsistent Parenting Every child needs consistent parenting. Children should know what to expect from their parents in every situation. For instance, if your son has to take out the garbage, he should know exactly what the punishment will be if he doesn’t. It should be consistent every time. If he forgets and has his TV privileges taken away, then the next time he forgets he only gets a verbal lecture, this is inconsistent parenting. Inconsistent parenting teaches that people are random, capricious, and there are no guarantees in life for good or bad behavior. It also molds children in such a way that they often grow up to be inconsistent individuals themselves and teaches them that decisions and actions should come from emotions, not logic. Lecturing Parents Every parent has to lecture their children from time to time. However, parents who only lecture generally use their language as the punishment versus dolling out real punishments that truly teach and correct. Parents who only give lectures as punishment often find their children’s behaviors don’t improve. This often results in even more severe lectures and harsher words from the parent. What parents may not

understand is their harsh comments can tear down a child’s self-esteem and/or make him more rebellious, so the cycle continues. More bad deeds are done, more lectures are given, and no positive outcome is ever found. Bribing Parents A great way to motivate children is giving them things they want. However, these things should be earned. When you give your children things to get them to do something or keep them from misbehaving, it’s bribing. Bribing your children impacts them in a very negative way. It teaches them that they should only do things if there’s something in it for them, and this is a bad mindset to have when they go out into the real world. Bribing also teaches children that they don’t have to respect people in authority (or people in general) because they are weak. There are no perfect parents. No matter how hard you try, you will make mistakes. You’re only human. However, if you recognize that your parenting style is going down the wrong road, start making changes today. The Rules of Polite Borrowing

A

N ETIQUETTE SKILL that too

often gets overlooked is the step-bystep rules to polite borrowing. Sure, we teach our children to ask politely before they take something that belongs to someone else, but do we teach them the rest of the rules attached to this important skill? I’ve seen too many hurt feelings, lost friendships, and hidden resentments, even with many adults, because they didn’t follow the polite rules of borrowing. Let’s make sure we teach our children these easy but important steps: » Always ask politely for permission before taking or using something that belongs to someone else. Don’t assume that the other person will allow you to borrow the item, but be pleased when they do. » During the process of asking to borrow an item, inform the lender of when exactly you will be returning the item. This is the most forgotten step when borrowing, but it is the most important step. You must make a commitment as to when you will return the item. 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2016

For example, you might say, “Hey Sarah, can I borrow this movie and return it tomorrow by lunch?” Or perhaps, “Hey Robert, can I borrow your rake and return it this evening?” The person lending the item has a right to know the terms of this arrangement. » Treat the item you borrow with extreme care, so you can return the item in the same condition it was when you borrowed it. However, if you borrow an item that was dirty, it is polite to clean the item before you return it. It’s a way of saying thank you to the lender. » Never lend others anything that is not yours. » Keep your word. This means that you return the item when you said you would without exception. This is how you become trustworthy, and this is what gives others security in knowing that you are someone they can trust to lend to. This is extremely important. » Thank the lender for their generosity, and remind them that you look forward to returning the favor sometime.

If you are hanging onto something that you borrowed a long time ago and never returned, return it today with an apology. People usually don’t forget, and they will appreciate the effort to make things right more than just ignoring the lapse in judgment or forgetfulness. Be responsible. Teach your children to honor their commitments and keep their word. Register your children for Summer Manners Camp now. Spots will fill up fast. Camps are for children ages 6-12. A Day in the Life with Rosacea

Matthew B. Doppelt, F.A.O.C.D., D.O. Board Certified Dermatologist

D

O YOU EVER WONDER why you blush so easily or your skin looks sunburned without being outside? You might be suffering from a chronic skin disease known as rosacea. Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that affects more than 16 million Americans, yet many people don’t even know rosacea exists.

As a dermatologist at Southeastern Dermatology in East Tennessee, I see a large number of patients with this common condition. While there is no cure, there are many treatment options for rosacea. Learning about the disease, identifying signs and symptoms, and employing the correct treatments are important factors in controlling this frustrating disease. Learn: What is rosacea? Rosacea is a chronic skin condition often affecting the face and eyes with flare-ups and remissions. It can be a life disruptive disorder, characterized by redness or ruddiness on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin that comes and goes. Rosacea can also appear around the eyes, neck, chest, ears, or scalp. Though it might start with symptoms like frequent blushing and visible capillaries, over time rosacea’s redness can become more persistent with visible blood vessels, thickening skin, and pimple-like breakouts. Rosacea can effect the eyes (ocular rosacea), which is characterized by eye irritation, burning, itchiness, or foreign body sensation. It is frequently misdiagnosed as being caused by allergies. Although anyone can develop rosacea, it is most common among people with fair skin and generally develops after age 30. More women than men are diagnosed with rosacea, but men often present more severe symptoms. Identify: Does my skin show signs and symptoms of rosacea? In many cases, rosacea starts with frequent blushing or often a flushed appearance. Symptoms often vary from patient to patient, but common signs include: » Persistent redness of the face » Spider veins or visible blood vessels called telangiectasias » Sensitive skin that might sting or turn red

Before Treatment after exposure to some beauty or skin care products » Red, pimple-like bumps that might fill with pus In more severe cases, rosacea symptoms can include eye irritation, plaques, and skin thickening and disfigurement of the nose, known as rhinophyma. People who think they might have rosacea should see a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment. Treat: How is rosacea treated? While there is no cure for rosacea and the condition’s cause is unknown, there are a number of treatments available to help control and reverse symptoms. There are four subtypes of rosacea, each requiring its own tailored form of treatment. Aggressively treating the symptoms of rosacea is the most important part of preventing future flareups and stopping the condition from getting worse. Avoiding common trigger factors such as UV light exposure, tobacco, alcohol, and hot/spicy food may be helpful. Proper skin care is of paramount importance in treating rosacea. Hydrating cleansers, unscented moisturizers, and sunscreens should be used by all rosacea sufferers. Effective topical and oral prescriptions are available to treat cases that are

After Treatment inadequately controlled by the above. Light-based therapies such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and pulse dye lasers are very effective in removing the persistent blood vessels. LED photomodulattion has been shown to decrease the inflammation of rosacea. As a board-certified dermatologist with more than a decade of experience in Knoxville, I can help you develop a rosacea treatment plan to stop this condition in its tracks and stop the disruption this condition can cause in your day-to-day life.
