WHEN I WAS in the market for a paddleboard, I noticed them wherever I went. When we were expecting our first child, we shared knowing glances with fellow parents to be. When we are passionate about something, that “something” jumps out at us wherever we go. We tend to notice everything about the subject that interests us.

For my husband, John, his passion is floors. You may laugh, and sometimes I do, too, but since we entered the deep-cleaning and restoration business a decade ago, he notices every single floor, walkway, and patio we encounter. Imagine conversation starters like: “This restaurant should have sealed this floor when they installed it. It could have stayed beautiful, but now it’s ruined.” Or “It looks as though an acid wash has destroyed the integrity of this tile. That’s unfortunate.” If the flooring is salvageable, sometimes he approaches the business owner and asks if he would like some help dealing with the problem. More than once, the owner is grateful for some free expertise, and a friendship is born.

John has a vast array of knowledge about whether a stone is manmade or natural, if porcelain is old or new. He can differentiate between a color seal and a colored grout and which cleaning/sealing method the home or business owner should use. He knows how to properly clean and maintain tile, carpet, concrete, and even brick pavers. He often takes before/after photos of his day’s work. When he gets home, he often whips out his photos, describing each one in detail. Sometimes I chuckle when he gets so excited about his day’s work, but it makes me realize why he is so good at cleaning and why our clients appreciate him so much. He genuinely cares.
