Intentional Charitable Giving

BY TRAVIS CULLMAN, CFP ®, CPFA

“IF YOU FAIL to plan, better plan to fail.” My mentor’s words still buzz through my head every time I sit down with a soon-to-be retiree. Questions like “Do you have a plan for retirement?” and “What about your income needs?” inevitably arise in these conversations. My mentor’s truism also hits home when I’m meeting with those in a season of transition or sudden wealth. A heartbroken widow with little understanding of finances needs a financial roadmap. A 55year-old entrepreneur receiving an uncle’s $5M inheritance also needs a plan - that’s obvious.

But do we have a plan for our charitable giving? Are we intentionally planning out our giving AND deriving the greatest tax benefit at the same time? Are we giving out of our income when we could be giving out of our assets?

One of my greatest joys in life is supporting philanthropic donors in their mission to impact the world and make a difference in the local community. Why not enjoy the tax benefits while we’re at it?

We would love to be a resource for you and leverage your charitable giving in a more impactful, tax-friendly way.

The Refugee King

Old City Performing Arts Center 111 State Street in Knoxville March 31 - April 2 at 7:30 pm April 3 at 2:30 pm

YOU KNOW the story. A long time ago, Jesus lived, died, and rose again. We tell it and re-tell it, and for good reason. But to what end? How does it really affect our daily life 2,000 years later? The Refugee King by Ethan Norman is a fresh, vibrant play with music wherein a couple finds themselves in a story - unfolding at a kitchen table like yours - where they must choose to be like Jesus or like everyone else.

Thursday is Pay What You Wish admission. Tickets are available at OldCityPac. com and at the door. For more information, call 865-539-2490 or visit WordPlayers.org.

The WordPlayers is a 501(c)(3) theatre company. SPRING 2022 is all about personalization… whatever works for you, especially when it comes to pants! Don’t be confused by all of the styles you’ll see this season; we’re here to help you break it all down and find which bottom works best with your top of choice.

Tunic tops are still strong this season - and will be into fall as well! Pair these with either a straight leg pant or the ever popular legging… these pieces present a flowy feel, covering at least the derriere and usually ending mid-thigh. The ankle pant can be worn with most every style top and is perfect to show off your cute spring shoes - whether it’s a fun-colored sandal or a sporty sneaker! The flared-leg or boot cut pant, particularly popular with taller ladies, can be worked wonderfully into your spring wardrobe; pair with

Ankle Pant a statement jacket or spring sweater and your look is complete.

The gaucho is back again! Another fun and flowy silhouette that’s perfect as the temperature warms up and the days get longer. These wider leg pants look best paired back with shorter tops. The newest and most popular pant for spring is the jogger, recognizable by a slight fullness through the leg and tapering in at the ankle. This is the sportiest of all the pants style, making it perfect if you lead a more casual lifestyle. Whatever pant style you choose, make your fashion statement by choosing the one that makes you feel comfortable and confident! Springtime is a time of fun in fashion… of independent thinking and pushing your imagination. Be adventurous, personalize your look, and remember the magic of fashion! Happy shopping!

Help Random Acts of Flowers Help Others

EVERY WEEK for the past 12 1/2 years, Random Acts of Flowers has stayed focused and true to its mission to improve the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering re-purposed flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. Even with the challenging environment that we are all facing, we are still able to accomplish this mission with the hard work of our more than 350 dedicated volunteers, our numerous donors, and our committed Perennial Society members; however, we can always use more support to keep delivering hope to our community.

Helping Random Acts of Flowers serve others can take many forms. Volunteering is a way that one can support our effort, and there is a variety of volunteering opportunities available, from volunteering to pick up donated flowers, to prepping donated flowers, to creating the bouquets, to delivering the completed bouquets. To learn more about becoming a volunteer, go to the volunteer section of our website at RAFKnoxville.org/volunteer.

To make a financial donation to support Random Acts of Flowers’ mission, you can visit our website and click on the “Donation” tab and make an online contribution, or you can mail a check to 2936 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37921.

Another way to financially support Random Acts of Flowers is to have your next private celebration or team building event here at our workshop or at your facility. These events typically include an overview of Random Acts of Flowers and its mission, followed by a demonstration on how to create beautiful flower arrangements. Participants are then guided through the process of creating flower arrangements that will be delivered to individuals in local healthcare facilities.

For more information on making a donation, having a Random Acts of Flowers event, or volunteering, please email us at info@ RAFKnoxville.org, call us at 865-633-9082, or visit RAFKnoxville.org.

BY BECKY HUNT, CO-OWNER OF PREMIERE CONSIGNMENT

Premiere Consignment

THE PREMIERE Consignment family would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to our clients who have been there for us for the past 10 years.

Premiere Consignment was started when we saw a need for an upscale furniture consignment store in Tellico Village. We (Mom and Son, Becky and Aaron) rolled up our sleeves and got to work!

After weeks of trying to find a good location, we set our eyes on the old “grocery store” at Lakeside Plaza. After lots of cleaning, scrubbing, and securing the necessary paperwork to start a business, we opened our doors in March 2012. Our inventory on opening day was very limited, but the support from our clients was huge! We soon saw the need for different avenues to help our clients “downsize.” At that point, we opened our eBay store and have now shipped all across the world… even to places that don’t have zip codes.

Shortly after we opened, a client needed help with an estate sale, so once again, we said “Why not?” Since that time, Premiere Consignment has hosted estate sales in Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, Avalon, Loudon, Vonore, Madisonville, and other nearby areas. Our “girls” who work the sales with us have become like family, and we all enjoy working together and getting to visit with our “regulars” at each sale.

As the store has expanded what we offer the community, Mom and Son have been joined by Dad and Wife, Toby and Misty. We are now truly a family business.

These past 10 years have been a blessing to our family, and we look forward to another 10 years of growth and serving our friends and those friends who we are hoping to meet soon!

Thank you, Aaron, Misty, Toby & Becky

Mabry-Hazen House Three Generations of History

Mabry-Hazen House

LOCATED ON A promontory with sweeping views of the Smoky Mountains to the south and the skyline of Knoxville to the west, Pine Hill Cottage, now called Mabry-Hazen House, sits at the crest of the ridge, slightly obscured from the roadway by the century-old magnolias. Finished in 1858 for Joseph and Laura Mabry, the house was situated just east of the city. During the next century, Pine Hill Cottage would then shelter three generations of their family and unbeknownst to them, also would serve as a museum for thousands of visitors to learn about their colorful history.

The stories of the Mabry-Hazen household are worthy of their own period dramas. The house tells the origins of Knoxville’s iconic Market Square, the bitter divisions of the Civil War, the lives of enslaved and domestic workers, the infamous 1882 Gunfight on Gay Street, the scandalous 1934 breach of promise and seduction trial, and much more through the rich, colorful lives of the Mabry and Hazen families.

Joseph A. Mabry cultivated a reputation as one of Knoxville’s most dynamic characters, investing his resources wherever he saw a potential profit and using whatever means necessary to protect his holdings, whether peaceful or violent. His portfolio ranged from land speculation and real estate development to railroading and mercantilism. Indeed, it was his real estate dealings that provided Knoxville with one of its most iconic spaces: Market Square. In 1853, Mabry, along with William Swan, donated land to the city for the express purpose of building a market house. While the structure itself was demolished in 1960, Market Square continues to serve as Knoxville’s central commercial and social district.

In 1883, Mabry’s oldest daughter, Alice Evelyn Mabry, was married to Rush Strong Hazen. Rush Hazen’s personal initiative and business acumen led to a successful career as a wholesale grocer. He moved his family to his wife’s old home in the early 1890s, joining his aging mother-in-law. They expanded the home, building a rear wing with a new kitchen, bathroom, and office to meet the new century.

In 1899, Rush and Alice’s youngest daughter, Evelyn Montgomery Hazen, was born. Evelyn enrolled at the University of Tennessee at the young age of 15, graduated at 19, taught English at Knoxville High School, and worked briefly for the New York Times. Yet her life was sadly defined by an ill-fated 15-year love affair and scandalous breach of promise and seduction trial in 1934. Despite the odds, she won the trial and was awarded the unprecedented amount of $80,000. She likely never received a dime of the award and for her perceived impropriety and “unladylike” activities, Evelyn Hazen was blacklisted by Knoxville society. When Evelyn died in June 1987, she had outlived every member of her immediate family by three decades and spent all of nearly 88 years in her family’s antebellum home. In her will, she left two options for it - either the house razed to the ground and the property sold for the benefit of the Humane Society or the home and the family heirlooms in it converted into a museum for the benefit of the public. To satisfy the latter of these options, the Hazen Historical Museum Foundation was created to preserve the home, the extensive family collection, and tell the occasionally wild, always colorful, sometimes tragic stories of the house and its family since the museum opened in 1992.

Because the home never left the family, the museum showcases one of the largest original family collections in America, with more 2,500 original artifacts on display and several thousand more in the archives. Walking into the historic house museum, you are offered a glimpse of the styles and tastes of the family. Throughout the year, the historic house museum presents a variety of special programming that highlights stories of emancipation or recreates 19th century Spiritualist seances. From March 10-12, Mabry-Hazen House will premiere Rate R for Risque: Courtship, Romance, Intimacy in the Hazen Household that will focus on romantic conventions in the early 20th century.

For more information on visiting the museum, tours, and our special programs, visit MabryHazen.com.

Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.
