Marsh Professional Group, LLC

When a professional team of CPA’s and independent financial advisors partnered with a time-honored estate attorney, their unique vision for a one-stopshop financial planning service became a reality.

From the Publisher The second Sunday in May is traditionally set aside to celebrate mothers, past and present. Women who fill the role of mom deserve to be honored for all their contributions and sacrifices that they show daily for their families. Moms are role models for their children, and their loving, caring demeanor will greatly impact their children’s upbringing. Those children will in turn go on to impact the lives of all they come in contact with daily. So moms should not take their role lightly. As sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, we should take time to honor the person in our lives who fills the role of mom not only on Mother’s Day, but every day. It’s as simple as taking time out of a busy schedule 4

t used to be that, as consumers, we would go to one place to have our income taxes prepared, another place to get investment advice, and yet another place to get legal advice. At the end of the day, it was our responsibility to keep up with all of the decisions being made that impacted our financial

world and hope nothing was overlooked— but not anymore. At Everything Knoxville, we found a group of Certified Public Accountants that have created a unique financial planning experience – every financial, estate, and legal service you need is offered under one roof.

EK: Yvonne, tell our readers a little bit about Marsh Professional Group, and describe for them the services you provide. Yvonne: We are a team of CPA’s and independent financial advisors who partner with an experienced estate attorney to provide our clients with a fully-integrated financial planning service. We provide income tax preparation and tax minimization reviews, we help clients make sound financial 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

decisions to protect their family’s future, and we give them the knowledge and tools to make smart, informed investment decisions. Also, by partnering with an estate attorney, we can make sure that their legacy plans are well thought out and documented. We’re a “one-stop-shop” of financial professionals, I guess you could say. EK: How unusual is it for a full-service CPA firm to offer this complete range of financial

planning services? Yvonne: To my knowledge, we are the only CPA firm in Knoxville providing this entire suite of services in one location. EK: How did you become interested in financial planning? Yvonne: I started my career as an auditor in public accounting, which taught me how to listen and pay attention to detail. I was always drawn to helping friends and family with their

tax and investment questions, so when I had an opportunity to transition into the financial advisory practice, I jumped at the opportunity. After we moved to Knoxville and my daughter was born, I wanted more work/life flexibility, so I started an online business, which I ran successfully before selling it a few years ago to rejoin the financial planning industry. My experiences as a CPA, small business owner, and a working parent help me view things from my clients’ perspective. I find it rewarding to help people make those hard financial decisions and give them the peace of mind they deserve.

EK: What is the biggest obstacle people face when they’re trying to make financial decisions? Yvonne: I think it’s lack of time, actually. We are all so busy managing our daily lives that it can be almost impossible to find the time to manage our financial life as well. It’s easy to push the decisions to another day, but the needs remain – to plan for our children’s college education and our own retirement, to make informed investment decisions, and even to help our aging parents manage their finances. So I developed a solution for myself and for my clients – I call it the Financial Foundation organizer. EK: What is the Financial Foundation organizer? Yvonne: We create a unique, custom organizer that is our clients to keep. It reflects their entire financial world, from bank accounts, investments, debts, insurance policies, retirement plans, wills, and estate planning documents, just to name a few. Not only does it allow you to keep track of how you are doing, but it is an invaluable tool to your spouse and adult children to have all of this information gathered in one spot. We even include a Survivor’s Checklist to help with the financial decisions that must be made at the loss of a loved one. Also, importantly, it provides me the basis I need as a financial advisor to see where my clients are on their financial journey so I can get them to where they want to be. EK: So along with providing tax services, help our readers understand the scope of financial planning services you provide. Yvonne: How much space do I have? Just kidding… First and foremost, we get to know our clients – what financial goals and dreams

are important to them. While we definitely help people answer their most pressing financial questions about “how much is enough?” for college savings and retirement income planning, we also dig deeper into the next layer of questions regarding such things as long-term care, social security maximization, income tax minimization, and proper investment diversification. Perhaps most importantly, we make sure that our clients’ investment holdings match their risk personalities so they aren’t riding the stock market roller coaster without a seat belt. We even provide a 401(k) review to ensure they have the proper mix of mutual funds and their investments in their employer’s retirement plan. EK: So once you’ve created a plan for someone, you can also help them with investment decisions if they need it? Yvonne: Yes, sometimes just building the plan isn’t enough and clients seek advice on their investment holdings. The most pressing question is definitely how to create income while protecting their principal. Safety and security is the name of the game, and if I’m going to recommend a certain type of investment to a client, I want to be able to follow the process to the end and be sure they get the best options available for them. Since I’m an independent advisor, I don’t have an agenda to promote any particular product or investment. I’m actually an Investment Advisor Representative, which means I am held to a higher “fiduciary” standard than what is generally found in the broker dealer world. EK: The question I’m sure is on everyone’s mind… is this an expensive process? Yvonne: It’s really not. Our advisory fees are very reasonably priced, and after our first complimentary meeting, I provide the client an exact quote of what their planning fee would be based on their goals and the level of assistance I can provide them. EK: What types of clients do you work with? Yvonne: A wide variety, actually. One reason I love my job is that I get to work with people in all phases of their financial life, though I most frequently work with individuals and couples over age 50 who are managing not only their own financial life, but perhaps helping their aging parents also. They definitely call it “the sandwich generation” for a reason! I also work with young couples and parents just starting out, women in transition due to divorce or widowhood, as well as small business owners. EK: What is the best way for our readers to learn if you can help them achieve their

individual financial goals? Yvonne: Just give our office a call and set up a complimentary meeting with me. It gives us a chance to get to know each other and see how I might be of service. There’s no cost or obligation – just an opportunity to have your questions answered. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Yvonne: Just that I hope people can be encouraged about their financial future, even if they have had some setbacks these last few years. Maybe their dreams are different now than they used to be, but they can still be attainable. I’d love an opportunity to give your readers some peace of mind that comes with having a comprehensive plan.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

The sun is shining longer every day, telling you that it’s time to get ready for vacations, activities with family and friends, and, of course, swimsuit season. To help you prepare, there are some simple fitness tips you can follow to look and feel good this summer season. Summer is just a few short months away. Getting your body ready for summer requires full involvement of one’s self. You need to be prepared mentally as much as you invest in yourself physically. So, you need to be ready from your head to your toes – it’s a full body commitment. Hard work aside, you’ll be sure to enjoy the new you as you reach your goal. Here are a few tips to help you tackle your workout routines and get your body ready for your summer wardrobe: » Stay hydrated. Drinking water helps flush your system, and, as a bonus, it keeps you from feeling bloated. » Swimwear, shorts, and dresses show off the legs, so be sure to target that area. Do squats and lunges to help tone the thighs and glute area. » Eat plenty of fiber. Remember you can get fiber from many different foods, including delicious summer fruits such as raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries! » Wear the right footwear. You don’t want your workout routine halted by injuries or soreness in your feet or legs. Proper shoes with insoles can help protect feet with every step and can help relieve and prevent pain for those suffering from shin splints, runner’s knee, and plantar fasciitis. » Add weights to your workout routine. They don’t have to be heavy to help trim and tone your muscles. » Keep up the workout, even while on vacation. Add a little variety to the routine with yoga or a jog along the beach. Time your workouts in the morning so you can enjoy the rest of your day. » As always, be sure to exercise responsibly and consult with a fitness expert to ensure you use proper form. Summer and warmer weather will be here before you know it, so get started right away to show off your physical fitness and summer-ready body. Put these fitness tips to use now to get your body toned and ready.

As often happens in life, our careers can take many turns. Upon graduating from the University of Tennessee, I pursued a career in both the insurance and finance arenas, but soon afterwards I returned to my residential painting career that I first launched as a part-time venture as a 17-year-old Farragut High School senior.

have to credit my father for my early success. He instilled in me a strong work ethic from a very early age which remains with me to this day. It not only influences the quality of the work I perform, but can also be seen in the quality and professionalism in the craftsmen I hire. Precision Painting has no sales people. I answer my own phone. I return calls promptly. I schedule my own appointments. I visit each and every homeowner, prepare my own quotes in a timely manner, and personally supervise each and every project, performing some of the work myself. My painters are experienced craftsmen. They are non-tobacco users and are at least 30 years of age. I check out each employee and ensure that they share both my work ethic and commitment to quality, honesty, and integrity. Another thing that we do which is unique in the industry is to provide each homeowner with a list of current references. An uncommon commitment to a strong work ethic, quality, professionalism, safe and clean worksite, integrity, and honesty are what each homeowner deserves and can expect from Precision Painting. That’s why satisfied customers from more than 20 years ago continue to use and recommend our company. For an unparalleled experience on your next home painting project, and for the peace of mind you deserve, I invite you to discover for yourself the Precision Painting difference. Precision Painting

How to Sign Up for Medicare Breaking down eligibility. Presented by Ali Swofford Enrollment is automatic for some. If you’re

65 and eligible to receive Social Security benefits, then you’re also automatically eligible for Medicare Part A (free hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance for which you pay premiums), a.k.a. “original Medicare”.1 You’ll get a red-white-and-blue Medicare card in the mail three months before your 65th birthday.2 Others need to sign up. You can apply to receive Medicare benefits even if you haven’t retired. If you’re coming up on 65 and don’t receive Social Security benefits, SSDI, or Railroad Retirement Benefits, visit your local Social Security Administration office, call (800) 772-1213, or visit www.ssa.gov to determine your eligibility.1,2 If eligible, you have the choice of accepting or rejecting Part B coverage. If you want Medicare Part A & Part B, sign your Medicare card and keep it in your wallet. If you don’t want Part B, put an “X” in the refusal box on the back of the Medicare card form and send it to the address shown on the card. Four weeks later, you’ll get a new Medicare card indicating you only have Part A coverage.3 When you’re enrolled in Medicare Part A & Part B, you can join a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). Anyone enrolled in Part A, B, or C becomes eligible for prescription drug coverage (Part D).1 If you’re 65+ and aren’t eligible for Medicare Part A, you can still sign up for Part B as long as you’re a U.S. citizen or legal U.S. resident for five years or longer.1 If you choose not to enroll in Part B during your initial enrollment period, you have another chance to sign up during the “general enrollment period” from January 1 through March 31, with Part B coverage commencing July 1.1 If you already have group medical insurance through your or your spouse’s workplace, you can either enroll in Part B while still covered by that plan or enroll within eight months of leaving your job or losing your health coverage, whichever happens first.1

Children’s Festival of Reading

Promises to Be an Epic Experience! Storytellers, writers, illustrators, and artists of all sorts take over World’s Fair Park to kick off a summer of reading on May 18

What do Superman, Curious George, Lunch Lady, and dinosaurs have in common? Knoxville and May 18. This year’s Children’s Festival of Reading promises to be epic – Titanic even. As one of the country’s oldest and largest literary festivals just for children, the event has gained a reputation as being an important stop for children’s authors and illustrators. his year’s line-

u p c o nt i n u e s t h e tradition of bringing in some of the most highly acclaimed talents in children’s literature, including Sharon Draper, fivetime recipient of the Coretta Scott King Author Award and National Teacher of the Year. Jarrett Krosoczka is renowned for his “Lunch Lady” series of graphic novels and “Punk Farm” books. Bob Shea has pitted unsuspecting librarians and just about everyone else against dinosaurs in his popular “Dinosaur vs. ...” series. Also joining the festival is the First Class Maid Jaynee of the Titanic Museum and Allan Wolf, whose book “The Watch That Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic” explores the notorious shipwreck in verse. Emmy Award-winner, Bobby Norfolk, brings his spellbinding storytelling skills back to the stage of the festival. Joining him is his very talented wife, Sherry Norfolk, who is a storyteller and educator in her own right. Jim Gill will have the crowd crooning with his latest musical book, “Soup Opera.” Keep a lookout 16

for Curious George, who will be roaming the festival along with other storybook characters. It all takes place on Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in World’s Fair Park at the 9th annual kick-off celebration for Knox County Public Library’s summer reading programs. The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in UT’s 11th Street Garage as well as in the city lots downtown, including Locust Street Garage, Market Square Garage, and State Street Garage. The Children’s Festival of Reading celebrates the literary arts with six performance stages, a Parade of Books, arts and crafts, book sales, 50 community booths, food, music, storytelling, and tons of fun. Readers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for a summer of reading in one of the library’s summer programs. “This festival does an outstanding job of encouraging families in the adventure of reading,” commented Knox County Mayor, Tim Burchett. “There’s something for everyone. It’s the best blend of fun and education in an effort to get everyone to sign up for summer reading.” Joining the festival for the first time is a live broadcast of WDVX’s Saturday morning program called “Kidstuff with Sean McCullough.”

Experiments in Science Village

Partnering with the L&N Stem Academy students, the Science Village hosts “Mr. Bond, The Science Guy” as he demonstrates jaw-dropping, mind-bending, awe-inspiring experiments in front of your very eyes! Robots Alive! will feature L&N Stem Academy students as they explain their robotic adventures. The UN-science Fair is where L&N Stem Academy students will show off their passion, enthusiasm, and know-how in experiments of their own.

New This Year

Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen brings all kinds of bouncing fun to the subject of childhood health and wellness. Good health for kids doesn’t have to be all carrots and no cake. Drop by Kids in the Kitchen for everything from gardening and dance parties to cooking demonstrations and karate. Families can learn how to live a balanced, healthy, and tasty life.

The Importance of Summer Reading

Knox County Public Library’s Summer Library Club encourages the whole family to get reading during the summer break. Research shows that children who do not read over the summer can accumulate a loss up to one and a half years in academic skills. The simple act of reading will maintain those skills from May to August. Experts recommend reading 20 minutes a day for retention of skills. Other studies show that summer reading is the opportunity for students to become passionate readers as a result of choosing material that is personally interesting. Furthermore, when adults read in front of their children, they are modeling a value of reading, which will have an impact on their child’s likelihood to continue reading for pleasure. Summer Library Clubs are available for all ages with rewards of up to $250 for children and teens. Adults can also participate by reading four books, which will enter them into a drawing for a prize package. For more information about the Children’s Festival of Reading, call 865.215.8767 or visit www.knoxlib.org/cfor.

Art Market Gallery Offers Unique Gifts for Mother’s Day Special dates are on the calendar this month, from Cinco de Mayo to Memorial Day, but one stands out for its universal interest: May 12, Mother’s Day. What better gift for the one-in-amillion woman in your life than a one-of-a-kind work of fine art or craft? (Also, don’t forget Father’s Day next month!) Since its founding for Knoxville’s 1982 World’s Fair, the Art Market Gallery has offered original creations from its professional artists that decorate homes and offices and reach into the souls of art lovers both locally and around the world. Housed in spacious quarters in a venerable building in downtown Knoxville, this artists’ cooperative offers works ranging from $5 to $5,000 in pottery, porcelain, jewelry, fiber and wearable art, wood, handcrafted furniture, metal, glass, mixed media, photography, hand-pulled prints, and paintings in oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, graphite, and more. Each month two gallery members are featured, with their opening receptions during the city’s First Friday Art Walks. For May, animal artist Victoria Simmons presents recent paintings with a focus on bird themes and furniture-maker Stan Fronczek is showing his carefully crafted furniture. Both are Knoxville residents. A lifelong birdwatcher and recipient of two artist grants, Victoria Simmons has concentrated on painting birds for the past three years. Her awardwinning animal paintings, juried into regional and national shows, are in private collections throughout the United States and abroad, among them commissioned works for actress Andie MacDowell. A contemporary furniture designer and maker who creates using both domestic and exotic types of wood, Stan Fronczek’s primary inspiration is drawn from Mid-Century and Asian styles that share his vision and the elements of clean, crisp lines. Fronczek’s unique works include cabinets, rockers, tables, benches, mirrors, and fun accessories. This month’s opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 9 pm on Friday, May 3, with complimentary refreshments and live music by Sunshine Station, a folk and bluegrass band. Many member artists will be on hand to meet and mingle with visitors. Owned and operated by more than 60 regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 S. Gay Street, next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. The gallery is handicapped accessible. Art Market Gallery

got it right: what a wonderful world. Perceiving this world through our senses embraces who we are and how we relate to our surroundings. Keeping up with the good health of our senses may seem less important than other aspects, but as we age, our senses may become dull and less keen. Lifestyle matters and keeping up with the aging process is not as difficult as most think. As we age, our sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell senses become particularly important for us to continue to enjoy this wonderful world. Our eyesight connects us to our world in a most amazing way. We see beauty with colors and images of our surroundings and are able to communicate using this sensory input. Vision is likely our most important sense. The aging process, however, may interfere with this sensory input and have a profound effect on our perception of the world. Conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration are some examples of age related degenerative conditions of the eyes as well as presbyopia, which is created by a loss of elasticity of the lens. With age comes rigidity of not only our lenses, but also eye ligaments such as suspensory ligaments that can affect our sight. According to the National Eye Institute, 50% of Americans will have a cataract by the age of 80. The good news is that even though we all age every day, what we consume on a daily basis can have a profound effect on our health. In other words, what we eat can directly affect how we age. We have chances every day to promote health or

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

not. To reiterate, our choices really do matter. Experts agree, food choices help promote the health of our whole body, and our senses are no exception. Foods that help promote good eye health include squash, sunflower seeds, greens such as watercress, kale, spinach, collards, mustard, and turnip greens, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, nuts, citrus fruits, fish such as salmon, whole grains, and sweet potatoes. Of course Vitamin A or beta carotene is the most well-known promoter of good eye health and is found in carrots and sweet potatoes, along with vitamins K and C and potassium. Grains contain zinc and selenium while broccoli contains lutein and vitamin C. Salmon and nuts offer omega oils and citrus fruits contain vitamin C. These examples of vitamins and minerals have been shown to reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Promoting the health of our senses makes sense particularly as we age. Being grateful for our eyesight helps develop an appreciation for our surrounding world and a desire to keep our eyesight keen and healthy. As Louis Armstrong so poignantly reminded us, “I see trees of green, red roses too, skies of blue, the colors of rainbows, the brightness of days, and smiling faces… what a wonderful world.” Note: Consult your healthcare professional

Why Going Gluten-Free Doesn’t Mean Going Grain-Free t’s impossible to

stroll the aisles in your local supermarket without seeing package after package labeled “glutenfree.” But who really needs a gluten-free diet, and how can you still enjoy grains, even if you’re eating gluten-free? Gluten is a protein found in just four grains: wheat, barley, rye, and triticale, a wheatrye hybrid. For people with celiac disease (an estimated 1% of the population), eating foods containing gluten can cause an immune reaction in the small intestine that leads to a host of health problems, from abdominal pain to vitamin deficiencies, that can affect the brain, bones, liver, and other organs. Some people who don’t have celiac disease still suffer from gluten-sensitivity or allergies to wheat and can benefit from a gluten-free diet. No matter the reason behind going gluten-free, for those making the switch, it might seem like the end of eating grains. However, according to the Whole Grains Council, that shouldn’t be the case. The non-profit advocacy group notes that while cutting out gluten-containing grains is important for those who are glutenintolerant, there’s an array of other whole grains – naturally gluten-free – that can make your diet as varied, delicious, and nutritious as you like. If you’re building a gluten-free menu, it’s important to include whole grains, which provide many essential nutrients. Try some of these options in your meals, from breakfast to dinner, to get a taste of the flavors and textures that whole, gluten-free grains have to offer:

20

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

» Amaranth • Popped like corn or added to soups or a pilaf, this heart-healthy grain adds great taste and texture. » Buckwheat • Whether used whole or ground as flour, buckwheat provides a rich, nutty flavor. » Corn • A classic American staple that is as versatile as it is easy to find.

» Millet • Let it stand alone as a side

or bake it into crunchy crackers; millet’s mild flavor ensures that it plays well with other ingredients.

» Oats • Oats themselves are gluten-

free, but they’re often processed in places where gluten products are also made. Make sure your oats are certified as free from cross-contamination.

» Quinoa • This nutrient-rich grain has been a staple in the Andes Mountains for centuries, and it’s gaining in popularity for its versatility and subtle flavor. » Brown and Colored Rice •

Rice itself, or products made from it, like noodles, can be used to prepare delicious dishes from around the globe.

» Sorghum • Flour made from this nutrient-packed grain can be used to make everything from pie crust to pancakes. It can also be popped - it’s a fun treat that looks like mini-popcorn. » Teff • Tiny teff grains (3,000 grains weigh just one ounce) make a flavorful flour that can be used for crepes, breads, or injera, the spongy flatbread that is a dietary staple in the grain’s native country of Ethiopia. » Wild Rice • Hearty, nutty, and utterly delicious, wild rice is a welcome addition on any plate. Use it as stuffing, in a salad, or simply on its own.

Because all of these whole grains have their own nutrient profiles, mixing them up is a great way to make your diet healthier – the more different grains you eat, the more nutritional variety you’ll get. Recipes for each kind of gluten-free grain can be found at www.wholegrainscouncil.org.

ave you given up trying

to wear contact lenses? Have you been told contact lenses aren’t an option for you? It’s true contact lenses aren’t for everyone, but how do you know if they’re a good option for you? You need to rely on a professional eye care provider who has the experience needed to present you with the best options for your best possible vision. Why is this important? Well, not every eye care professional specializes in hard-to-fit patients. Many of these patients are often told they aren’t candidates for contact lenses. Dr. Brent Fry of Premier Eyecare has been successfully prescribing specialty contact lenses for more than a decade. Not everyone needs specialty contact lenses, but when you do, it’s important to have access to the best technology has to offer. The Duette family of hybrid contact lenses was developed to provide optimal vision and comfort to those who require or desire high definition vision. If you have astigmatism or trouble focusing at near without reading glasses, then Duette lenses may be just what you need to get back into contact lenses. Soft lenses have come a long way but still may fall short in providing crisp vision for everyone. Fortunately, with Duette, we now have a specialty contact lens that allows us to fit more patients successfully with contact lenses, providing superior optics and excellent comfort. If you have astigmatism and are tired of settling for “soft” vision, then Duette HD may be the lens you’ve been looking for all these years. If you’re 40 or older and thought you’d have to settle for wearing reading glasses with your contact lenses or give up contact lenses altogether, we encourage you to try the Duette Multi-focal contact lens. Whether working at a computer, reading your favorite book, or driving at night, you need your vision to be its best. Why settle for “soft” vision when you can have sharp, crisp vision at all distances? If you’re ready to experience high definition vision, call today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Fry to discuss your contact lens options. We have several hundred patients who are experiencing the superior optics of Duette lenses, so why not you? Call today and start seeing the world as it should be seen.

id you know that your

dog ’s largest organ is his skin? Skin has three layers with a covering of hair or fur, which protects the body. A dull, dry, un-kept coat doesn’t offer the protection of a healthy coat. Enhancing your dog’s coat means enhancing his well-being, and the key ingredients are diet and grooming.

Our guests are only served the highest quality, most nutritious homemade treats.

Healthy diets are visible in thick, shiny coats with resilient texture. Different breeds, size, age, and energy level of dogs have various dietary needs. All dogs need some protein for hair production and growth and some fat for shine and vitamin absorption. At Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, only nutritious, fine ingredient, homemade treats are served nightly, and all Ms. C’s treats are made on-site. With many commercial treats coming from overseas, where strict, quality guidelines are often not met, Ms. C’s does not accept commercial treats for their guests. Parents are encouraged not to serve commercial treats with nutritional value being unknown. Visit Ms. C’s website at www. Hot Summer Fashion Trends ou don’t have to be rich to be hot this summer! At Next To New, we have the latest styles in the hottest looks for a fraction of the cost. Find the best summer trends from the Knoxville News Sentinel’s People’s Choice Award “Favorite” consignment store today! Here are the top trends for summer: Monochrome still dominates the 2013 summer in fashion “must-haves,” with black and white continuing to lead the way. The motif is bold and graphic and should be included in both career and casual wear. The basic white shirt with a nod to the oversize proves to be a versatile staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Paired with skinny, cropped trousers, or jeans, the look is both timeless and trendy. Oriental blossoms on everything have taken center stage on the runways for summer. Often shown on feminine dresses (another BIG TREND, which includes ruffles), oriental influences are showing up on skirts and tops, too. If you want to update your summer wardrobe this year, add the mystique of the orient! Pencil skirts and front splits are a definite

Fashion

must have for this summer. Pair either with a tuxedo style or a bomber jacket, and you will surely be “styling” this summer. The designer gods are looking after women this summer! Low heels are all the rage. But before you get too excited, “pointy toes” are also in vogue. Ankle straps are hot with skirts and dresses; wedge sandals and wedge sneakers are perfect for casual wear. Don’t forget to update your “arm candy” with a quality handbag in a metallic gold or in an oversized tote. Neon colorations may be hold-overs from last summer but are still relevant. Jewelry hot spots include both tribal and geometric styles, metal link chains, and cuff bracelets. Rose gold is also making a huge comeback. “The Trail of Tears (1838-2013): From Tragedy to Triumph in 175 Years” Will Be Presented By Dr. Susan M. Abram for ETHS Annual Meeting “The Trail of Tears (1838-2013):

From Tragedy to Triumph in 175 Years” will be the topic of Dr. Susan M. Abram’s address at the annual dinner of the East Tennessee Historical Society on Tuesday, May 7. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 pm and will be followed by the dinner, lecture, and awards presentations, which begin at 6:30 pm. This year marks 175 years since the forced removal of the Cherokee from their homeland to Indian Territory out west, which took the lives of at least one-quarter of the Cherokee population. Dr. Abram’s presentation will examine the entire tragedy of removal. In addition, it will consider the remnant of Cherokee who remained in the east, including the group that became the Eastern Band of Cherokee. Through a horrible and devastating time, the Cherokee, both in the east and west, have continued to persevere and even thrive after 175 years. Susan M. Abram, Ph.D. is an associate professor of history at Western Carolina University and the secretary

of the North Carolina Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association. The occasion will also feature the presentation of Awards of Excellence to organizations and individuals for special projects to preserve and promote the region’s history. These include the Teaching Excellence Award, History in the Media, Award of Distinction, and the Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement. Established in 1834, the East Tennessee Historical Society is widely acknowledged to be one of the most active history organizations in the state and enjoys a national reputation for excellence in programming and education. The event will be held at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street in Knoxville, and is open to the public. Tickets are $35 per person and include both the lecture and dinner. To make reservations or for additional information, call 865-215-8824 or visit www. eastTNhistory.org. Guests are invited to arrive early to tour the

exhibitions “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee” and “Becoming the Volunteer State: Tennessee in the War of 1812.”

About the East Tennessee Historical Society Since 1834, the East Tennessee Historical Society has been helping East Tennesseans hold on to our unique heritage – recording the events, collecting the artifacts, and saving the stories that comprise the history we all share. The historical society pursues its educational mission through publications, lectures, conferences, school programs, museum exhibits, and heritage programs such as the popular First Families of Tennessee and the Civil War Families of Tennessee. Ease Travel Worries with Three Simple Tips raveling has its fair share of challenges, from never-ending lines to unexpected layovers and uncomfortable flights. Fortunately, by incorporating just a few expert tips, traveling can be less stressful whether you’re jetting off for business or pleasure. TIP #1

Become a savvy suitcase packer

Travel with ease by avoiding heavy luggage. As you get ready for a trip, lay out all your clothes and only take half of what you think you will need. Chances are you will over-pack if you take everything. Essentials include clothing pieces that can be paired with different outfits, like jeans, and cardigans that can be dressed down for daytime as well as jazzed up for nighttime. No matter where you’re traveling, be sure to carry the basics such as credit cards, extra

cash, and a phone charger in your carry-on. Always be sure to put your phone charger in your purse or briefcase and not in your suitcase. That way, if your luggage gets lost, you can still charge your phone. TIP #2

Remain polished while beating stress

Avoid feeling and looking frazzled while traveling by arriving at the airport at least an hour and a half before your flight. If you’re flying internationally, be sure to get there two hours before takeoff. One of the worst things you can do while traveling is rush. Arriving at the airport early will help you avoid feeling stressed out. TIP #3

Fight jet lag and stay healthy

Jet lag is bound to happen when traveling, especially if you’re embarking on a long flight overseas. The two most important elements

for combating jet lag are exercise and hydration. Fight jet lag and fatigue by walking the plane aisles to stimulate circulation while releasing tension in your muscles. Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and try to make healthy eating choices by packing a few snacks in your purse, briefcase, or carry-on luggage. Bring easy-to-travel, non-perishable food, like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit, to stay healthy and full while up in the air. Traveling may pose its challenges at times, but incorporating these easy tips will help you be stress-free and well-equipped from takeoff to landing. May 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Art in the Garden was started in 2009 as an avenue in which Random Acts of Flowers could connect supporters, artists, and the charity in a unique atmosphere. “This event provides guests a unique opportunity to experience art creation firsthand while supporting a very special charitable organization,” said Michelle Jubran, Art in the Garden event chair. Art from local and regional artists will be featured in a silent auction with the highlight of the event being the creation of various works of art during the party. Ten acclaimed artists will be crafting one-of-a-kind pieces during the event which will be available to guests during the live auction at the end of the evening.

“It’s a very special experience when you can see a work of art come alive right before your eyes, learn the artists’ inspiration and techniques, and then be able to purchase the piece and take it home,” said Chelly Clayton, Art in the Garden event co-chair. “It really gives you a connection to art like no other.” All proceeds go to support the charity’s mission of improving mental health through the power of giving flowers. Random Acts of Flowers volunteers collect donated flowers from weddings, memorial services, florists, special events, grocery stores, and churches to recycle and repurpose them into beautiful bouquets for delivery to patients in area hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice care centers. Tickets to this year’s Art in the Garden are $100 per person. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 865-633-9082 or visit www.RandomActsof Flowers.org.

Why Build a New Home?

uilding allows you a creative expression of your personality, lifestyle, design, aesthetics, etc. What if you know what you want, but everything you’re drawn to has a big price tag with it? Well, there are two answers to that.

The first response is to do your homework! Start pulling

together images of rooms, moldings, floor plans, etc. that resonate with you long before you even intend to build. Make notes on the daily/weekly activities for you and your family. Do you need a wall office or central hub for your children’s school papers, keys, bills to be paid, etc.? Take notes of the things you love about your current residence and the things you would change. Be as detailed as you possibly can.

40

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

The second response is to find a builder/realtor team that listens to your needs, finds options that fit your aesthetics, and, when necessary, thinks outside the box so you can have the home of your dreams, but who also keeps you within your budget. Jenny Blalock with Luxe Homes & Design and I were faced with exactly that challenge. A custom buyer we were working with recently had a specific budget and equally specific requirements. After months of us meeting at various neighborhoods, pouring over lots and topographical elevations, we decided on a lot. We then found a floor plan that was a 90% fit. After a few adjustments, we gave it the stamp of approval and began our build. The main design of the build Photographs by Beth Fellhoelter | Living Room & Dining Room photos by D. Roberts Photography

Home

was decided upfront, including what rooms would have hardwood, whether there would be a double oven or insert, covered back porch, etc. But, as we moved forward, there were still an innumerable amount of details to nail down. I know you’re hearing warning sirens! This is exactly why you are afraid to build! However, do not despair. This is where the Luxe Home & Design team shines! Being on a budget does not eliminate the opportunity for personalized custom features. If you look at the fireplace hearth in the photo above, you’d never know that the mantle is a salvaged piece which was painted a cool grey and surrounded with bricks from Jenny’s family’s 100-year-old estate! Years ago we had a client who was a highpowered corporate kind of guy that traveled the world for business. He fell in love with midcentury modern design elements before Mad Men made it cool. (He is generally three to four years ahead of Knoxville’s design trends.) He came to Jenny with some architectural magazine ads for these sleek modern lights. It’s true that the lights were amazing, but so was the price tag that came with them. Jenny spent weeks scouring the Internet and her local connections… anything and anyone that could help get the lights but without busting through the lighting allowance. She was able to find these amazing mid-century mod lights at about half the cost of the designer version. Your kitchen backsplash tile is the main focal point of any kitchen, but it’s also a design element that is chosen towards the end of the project where budgets and financing are often strained. The $100 per square foot tile our recent client chose was well outside her budget as it would be for most buyers. To solve this problem, Jenny bought a mold with a similar design and hand cut each tile! This is not only

an economical solution, but it turned out amazing! (Truth be told, I’m a little jealous and would love to have this in my own home!) Jenny cut each tile from its mold, sanded, smoothed, hand painted, then sealed. It was a true labor of love. Isn’t that the kind of building experience everyone dreams of ? Don’t wait… contact the Luxe Home & Design building team today!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

Hydrangea Quercifolia ‘Little Honey’ S u b m i t t e d by Ja s o n R e e v e s , H o r t i c u lt u r i s t, UT G a r d e n s , Ja c k s o n

Few plants brighten up

a shady spot in the garden like oakleaf hydrangea ‘Little Honey’. Its foliage emerges a luminescent yellow and ages to chartreuse by mid-summer. Its small five- to six-inch white, cone-shaped panicles are at their best in mid-June and are nondescript compared to other oakleaf hydrangeas, but the foliage makes up for them. In the fall, the foliage turns a brilliant orange red and persists through December. As with all oakleaf hydrangeas, the bark peels with age and is an attractive addition to the winter garden. Little Honey is best grown in morning sun and afternoon shade for optimum leaf color. Given too much shade, the oak leaf-shaped foliage turns green

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

by mid-summer and its fall color is less intense. In cooler areas of Tennessee, it can take a good bit more sun, intensifying its fall color. Little Honey is a standout in any partly shady area of the garden or on the east or north side of a house. A darkcolored house such as one made of red brick really makes it glow. Most literature and labeling state that Little Honey will reach

four feet tall and wide, but the seven-year-old plant at the University of Tennessee Gardens in Jackson is six feet tall and five feet wide. Several others of equal size are known to be growing in the region. Little Honey is among the many cultivated plants that can’t read their own label. Native to the southeastern U.S., oakleaf hydrangeas prefer fertile, moist, but well-drained soil and will not tolerate excessive moisture. Little Honey is no exception. It sometimes can be slower to establish than other oakleaf cultivars, so don’t give up if your first attempt doesn’t impress. The plant is hardy to USDA plant hardiness zone 5.

What’s the

What’s the Difference? What’s Difference? Bugging You? Can you tell the difference between an ant and a termite? And if you can tell the difference, would you know the best way to control them? This edition of “What’s Bugging You” by Heritage Termite and Pest Service wants to give you a “bug’s eye view” of these common pests around the house.

T

here are three types of

termites. There is the worker who feeds the colony and does the damage to your property, the soldier who defends the colony, and the queen who lays the eggs and starts new colonies by annual swarming. Termite swarmers are often confused with flying ants because both have wings and both are sent out of existing nests to create new colonies. Termites move in and out of your home from underground nests, and anywhere wood touches the ground is an open invitation for termites. (There is usually a connection to dampness.) Termites eat approximately 120 household materials in addition to untreated wood. They can enter buildings directly from the soil, through mud tunnels, cracks in footings, foundations, concrete floors, or anywhere untreated wood is in direct contact with the soil.

They can enter buildings directly from the soil, through mud tunnels, cracks in footings, foundations, concrete floors, or anywhere untreated wood is in direct contact with the soil. Ants, on the other hand, are very social. They are everywhere and eat just about anything. Carpenter ants do damage to wood, but most of the damage done by ants is food contamination and destroying seeds and plants. The best way to control termites or ants is to call Heritage Termite and Pest Service. Call them today for a free in-home consultation at 865-5258900 or visit www.heritagetermite.com.

More and more I’ve been hearing from homeowners that a number of well-known area carpet cleaning companies are cleaning their Oriental rug in-home, right on their home’s hardwood floor. That’s just crazy. The technology that is used successfully to clean wall-to-wall carpeting is not the same technology that can successfully clean your valuable Oriental rugs. These rugs need to be washed, and they need to be washed in a highly specialized facility that utilizes the latest technology to thoroughly wash and safeguard your priceless, and perhaps heirloom, rugs.

The band has been together for seven years and has performed classic songs “Crying,” “Pretty Woman,” “Running Scared,” and many more in theatres across the country. Roy Orbison is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was admired greatly by his peers and his fans. There will be commentary and humor based on his life to go along with the music.

Here’s the difference. Conventional wall-to-wall carpeting is usually manufactured from a colorfast synthetic fiber that is typically very forgiving. Oriental rugs, on the other hand, are handmade from natural fibers, such as wool, and are dyed using plant or other natural dyes. You need to wash these rugs in an environmentally controlled facility where all of the variables – including humidity, temperature, and pH, to name a few – are controlled. We watch carefully for dye migration and other issues that can potentially arise to protect your valuable investment. As a carpet cleaning expert with more than 25 years of extensive wall-to-wall carpet cleaning experience, and the owner of one of the largest Oriental and fine rug washing studios in the area, I have to be honest with you. I simply can’t wash your Oriental rugs in your home or outside on your driveway where the abrasive concrete can damage your rug’s delicate fibers. If your home’s fine and Oriental rugs require washing, I invite you to discover the difference that Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can make to your valuable Oriental and fine rugs. You have my word on it. We’ll wash your Oriental rugs the right way or we won’t wash them at all. And yes, we also clean carpeting. Selling your luxury home? It deserves a luxury marketing plan! Your luxury home is unique. It deserves exceptional marketing effort. With Homes & Land, your home will be given the finest exposure available to help your agent sell your home. We direct mail our full color magazine to qualified buyers. We’ll also post it on NYTimes.com, WSJ.com, HomesAndLand.com, DupontRegistry.com, and many more. HD video tours also available.

Homes & Land Celebrates 30 Years! Old-fashioned service, today’s technology

Homes & Land Media was established in

1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins in Sevier County. Their first black and white real estate magazine was revolutional for it’s time as there were few advertising options for real estate agents. It’s hard to imagine, but this was before cell phones, the Internet, and even desktop computers!

Ask your real estate agent to feature your home in Homes & Land. L to R: Glenn & Kristina Longmire, Kerry Haskins, Russ & Cheryl Haskins, Russell Haskins

Learn more at www.WhyHomesAndLand.com

In the early days, Mr. Haskins was a one-man operation. He would sell, design, and distribute the magazine. Things have changed with technology, but one thing has remained the same – the Haskins family. These days, there’s a lot of family involved, including in-laws and cousins. Their motto has always been “expect to be serviced, not sold.” They have some clients that have never missed an issue in 30 years! Many of their clients have been with them for more than 15 years. What makes Homes & Land different? Oldfashioned service and relationships. They genuinely care about their clients and go the extra mile to make sure they receive top value for their advertising dollars. In 2003, the Great Smoky Mountains Association of REALTORS named the new addition of their building Haskins Hall in honor of the years of service Russ and Cheryl have given to the real estate community. Of all the awards they’ve won for sales through the years, this is the one honor which is most treasured. How has Homes & Land kept up with technology? They’ve evolved through the years and, in fact, were the very first company to place real estate listings online back in 1992! Today, technology is at the forefront of what they provide agents, from online syndication, to mobile websites, to professional video tours. They’ve come a long way from their humble beginnings of one black and white magazine. Now they publish nine magazines across Tennessee and provide agents with a complete marketing solution, including print, online, direct mail, social, and multimedia tools. The Haskins want to thank all their readers and the many agents who’ve supported them through the years. They look forward to many more years serving the real estate community.

Five Reasons to Install Retractable Screens 1. Let in fresh air and keep out insects.

As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more time on our patios and porches, yet bugs often make it difficult to stay outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a solution that fits your needs.

2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you to

et your fix of finger pickin' and fiddling at the WDVX World Class Bluegrass Show. The series will host both outstanding regional talent and legendary, internationally recognized bluegrass musicians to celebrate and share the wonderful traditions and the many facets of the Bluegrass genre. Co-headlining the night's world-class performances are Dale Ann Bradley and Blue Highway. Hailing from the hills of Eastern Kentucky, Dale Ann Bradley is one of the bluegrass tradition's treasures. Reigning five-time IBMA vocalist of the year winner, her voice is one of the most natural and expressive in the history of the genre and pairs nicely with her smartly selected group of musicians, including Phil Ledbetter and Steve Gulley. Rounding out the bill with more than 17 years of accolades and 10 albums to their credit are Grammy nominated Blue Highway. Artfully balanced between tradition and innovation, Blue Highway remains in the forefront of contemporary bluegrass music, resonating and influencing music lovers and musicians alike.

enjoy uninterrupted views when they’re retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about bugs. Large, motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort and be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish views or esthetics, as they’re only in place when needed.

are throwing out the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. They provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly results, making it a perfect addition for any home.

4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens are

the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or retract the screens to gain the warming effects of the sun in the cooler months.

5. Enjoy the convenience of a professional installation. Homeowners often struggle

to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of their openings. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if looking for recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs.

A Home with Something Old and Something New Homeowners today use the materials they find from decorative stained glass, antique doors, massive structural beams, etc. and incorporate them into their new home building plans. When they’re done, they have all of the wood grains, history, and provenance of the old world feel with all of today’s modern conveniences. “Incorporating antiques

However, many people who move into a new home lament that their simpler, newer design is often missing the charming architectural details typically found in older homes.

Incorporating antique furniture can be a great way to warm up the feeling of a newer home, but many people struggle with making these classic details fit in with a modern space. Designer/builder Jenny Blalock with Luxe Homes & Design can help you build your new home around architectural antiques. “There’s nothing like walking into a home that has a cozy, unique presence you experience the moment you enter,” says Jenny. “I’m always excited when a client presents me with an antique they have inherited. I love the challenge of exploring just how the piece can be worked into their new home. Sometimes you have to get very creative in the reuse of these pieces. There are so many ways to incorporate antiques into a new home. I’ve taken an old sewing machine and made it into a sink vanity on a recent project. You just have to think outside the box. “Not only do these items provide amazing decorative and sentimental value for our clients, but they are budget-friendly, too,” continues Jenny. “Using antiques and reclaimed materials is part of an exciting experience. Shower Door, Floor, or Countertop Nightmare?

We Can Help!

D

oes this sound familiar? (Names have been changed to prevent embarrassment and provide anonymity.) Kim had tried everything she could think of to clean her glass shower doors. She scrubbed them with Scotchbrite and Kaboom and even used a wallpaper steamer filled with water and vinegar. After vigorous scrubbing, she was able to remove most of the soap scum, but still had a plethora of hard water spots and mineral deposits. Patricia, on the other hand, used Tilex on her glass doors. The product permanently etched the doors and had to be replaced. Within months, the new doors needed some serious attention, but she was fearful of damaging the second set. Another frustrated homeowner, Vicky, says they tried to clean their shower doors before putting their house on the market. The glass was covered with white spots, and since they have a water filtration system and never use bar soap, they were at a loss as to what was

causing the spots. They tried cleaning the doors multiple times using Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, Comet, toilet cleaner, cornstarch paste, vinegar, and CLR. After hours of elbow grease and money spent on useless products, the spots remained. Sherry’s issue is her natural stone countertops. She noticed that within weeks of installation, parts of her countertop would bead with water, while other parts seemed to absorb water droplets. In addition, a dark stain appeared near the coffee pot, and, despite her efforts, store bought cleaners weren’t doing the trick. Rebecca isn’t sure what to do about her tile and grout floor in the bathroom. The grout along the tub and toilet are discolored and dirty looking. She has used vinegar and several over-the-counter tile and grout cleaners, but the stains won’t budge. She says that when she has guests, the floor is embarrassing to her, so she does her best to hide the stains under bathroom rugs. If you struggle with water spots, stains, soap scum, or discoloration on your floors,

doors, or countertops, you aren’t alone. Surface Doc can help you restore these tough areas. They specialize in deep cleaning and sealing most any surface, and they will even teach you how to easily maintain the integrity of your newly restored area. We spent another $500 on an inline cartridge filter and were about to spend $400-plus for a reverse osmosis filter for the humidifier. That’s when we heard the Aqua Clear ad and called for an appointment. “From the initial contact through installation, each Aqua Clear representative was knowledgeable, professional, courteous, and customer oriented. Out went all the piecemeal fixes, replaced with a Kinetico 2060S and an AquaKinetic model A-200 for drinking water. “We hadn’t realized the full extent of the effect the hard water was having on our tankless hot water heater. With the old filter we had to turn the temperature control in our shower as far as it would go to get hot water. Now control is precise and lukewarm showers are a thing of the past. Also, clothing is emerging from the washer noticeably whiter and brighter. This was a pleasant surprise, one we had not anticipated. “I could go on and on about sparkling dishes, condition of skin and hair, and the need to use considerably less cleaning products for anything water related. We are thrilled with the crystal clear water (ice cubes, too). We couldn’t be more pleased and highly recommend Aqua Clear Water Systems as the go-to company for any water treatment needs.” To discover how better water can lead to a healthier life for you and your family, ask for your free, no obligation, in-home water analysis today. The Anatomy of a Great Window

A

s an experienced

replacement window and door consultant, the selection of a top quality replacement window is a simple one. But as a homeowner, the selection process is challenging. Most homeowners are uncertain as to just which characteristics are important when choosing a new replacement window, and their confusion is made even greater by competing claims from dozens of different window manufacturers, each claiming to be number one. I’ll try to provide you with the basic information you’ll need to make a great choice. But before I begin, consider this. The best window, improperly installed, is no better than your worst choice. Let’s assume then that installation is not an issue. So just why do windows fail? Window quality is inherent in the manufacturing process. Certainly a quality window must be manufactured to stringent manufacturing standards and procedures, but it goes far beyond that. The number one characteristic in determining the

quality of a window are the materials used to construct them. But perhaps not for the reasons you might think. Windows are exposed to significant temperature variations called thermal expansion, and this thermal expansion causes the materials your windows are constructed from to expand and contract. Windows manufactured from different materials expand and contract at different rates, resulting in window seal failure that can cause clad wooded windows to rot. The reason being is that wood and aluminum expand and contract at different rates, causing it to separate at the corners and allowing water to come in contact with the wood. This causes the wood to rot, and the worst part about it is that it is hidden rot. The only time you realize you have a problem is when it rots completely through to the inside of your house. By this time the moisture entering your home may have caused some structural damage as well. Marvin Windows, one of the nation’s premier window and door manufacturing companies since 1912, is the pioneer in the development of Ultrex® fiberglass, a material so strong and durable that one

There’s No Better 10527 Kingston Pike, Suite A Knoxville, TN 37922 58

of the country’s most respected consumer reporting agencies rated Marvin Windows number one. Ultrex® has less than half the thermal expansion of aluminum, one-third that of wood/vinyl composite, and onesixth that of vinyl. What does all this mean? Low thermal expansion means a stronger seal, reducing the risk of seal failure. In fact, as the number one Marvin window distributor in North America, we have never replaced a Marvin Infinity replacement window due to seal failure. If you’re currently considering replacement windows or doors and would like to discover why Marvin Windows manufactured from Ultrex® has been rated number one in the nation, and why CRS Exteriors has become the number one Marvin replacement window dealership in the country, I invite you to call me today.

hile your home’s gutters and roof may appear to be unrelated, they function very much as a system. Gutters safely and efficiently move water away from your roof, not to mention your home’s foundation. Gutters that are clogged and otherwise do not function properly can result in water backing up under your home’s shingles, resulting in interior damage to walls, ceilings, and insulation, creating the perfect environment for mold and mildew. Clogged gutters also allow unwanted water to accumulate next to your home’s foundation. The solution is simple: Gutter Guard from All Dry Roofing. Gutter Guard is a fast and inexpensive solution to dirt, debris, and leaves that can find their way into your home’s gutters, which can clog downspouts, preventing water from escaping.

Rotten Luck

Many of us remember the lyrics from a once popular song, “If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” Well, substitute “rotten” for “bad,” because it’s time to sing a new tune this spring.

T

ennessee weather is tough on our home’s exterior. Freezing temperatures, humidity, rain, and the blazing sun are just a few of the elements that can do serious and expensive damage, first to our home’s exterior and oftentimes to its interior as well. I’m talking about wood rot that’s so prevalent here in East Tennessee. Wood rot destroys windows and doors. Rain, cold, and insects enter our homes through these rotted areas, resulting in even more damage, not to mention potential energy loss. When elements or critters enter our homes through these rotted entryways, they can damage or destroy insulation, drywall, flooring, and window and door frames, resulting in a costly home repair. This is the best time of the year to inspect your home’s exterior for rot. Be thorough. Check your home’s fascia and soffits, doors and windows, railings and decks. On top of the damage that rot represents to your home, it also represents the potential for serious injury from rotted deck boards or hand railings. If you think the small amount of rot you may have detected isn’t serious enough to warrant your attention, be advised that more serious rotting may exist just below the surface that is not as obvious. Got rot or you’re not sure? Why take a chance and risk a more costly repair bill later? Call Mr. Handyman today! We’ll make a thorough analysis of suspicious areas and recommend a cost-effective solution for any repairs or preventative measures that might be required. At Mr. Handyman, we hire only experienced, professional, licensed, and insured tradesmen who will both inspect and repair any damage that rot may have already done to your home. So why not turn your “rotten luck” into “good luck” by correcting any early signs of rotting that your home may have? Call Mr. Handyman today! Mr. Handyman

Z Top, aka “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact, and, in 2004, the Texas trio was be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them - Billy F. Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard - but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after more than 40 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah, we’re the same three guys, bashing out the same three chords,” says Billy, guitarist extraordinaire. With the release of each of their albums, the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ Top is the same but always changing. May in the Garden Spring has finally

arrived! May is the month when gardeners are free to give in to all their garden desires. You have averted your eyes when neighbors planted things too early, chuckled silently if their plants died, and curbed your craving to play in the dirt for long enough! ›› The average last frost for our area was April 15. Mother Nature, however, has a wicked sense of humor. I have seen frost as late as May 7, so don’t pack away all those sheets and blankets just yet. ›› This is still a good time to plant trees and shrubs, but you need to be prepared to water them. I know it has been raining for months, but that won’t last forever! Remember, they need at least 1” of rain per week. One way to check this is to put a tuna or cat food can near the plants, and see how much water accumulates during the week. If it doesn’t fill up, you need to drag out the hose. Notice I didn’t say run

the sprinkler! Repeat after me: sprinklers are for flowers and grass, hoses are for trees and shrubs. ›› If your spring blooming trees and shrubs need shaping, now is the time to do that. They will rest, and then they will start forming buds for next year. Pruning while they’re resting means you don’t remove next year’s flowers. Blasting shrubs that have finished blooming with a water hose will also remove spent flowers that might hang around and become home to insects and fungus. ›› If you still haven’t fertilized your trees and shrubs, now is a good time. Do you have to fertilize? No. Fertilizer is to plants as vitamins are to humans. If your plants are getting everything they need from their “diet,” then they don’t need supplements. If they seem to be struggling, a little organic boost probably won’t hurt. Call or come by with a sample if you have questions. ›› Fungal spores are busily breeding in

our warm, damp weather. Keep an eye on susceptible plants, and start treating as soon as you see a problem. ›› Insects are also busily breeding. Check your plants often, and you can stop an insect outbreak before you’re infested. Remember to always start with the least toxic product first. Systemic insecticides are great for plants like azaleas, euonymous, and Alberta spruce that are especially susceptible to bugs. ›› Perennials can be fertilized now. There are some that prefer not to be fertilized, so check if you have a question. ›› Stake tall perennials before they start flopping. You can buy supports and cages, or you can use bamboo or sticks. Old panty hose make great plant ties if you cut them into strips. They are strong, but flexible. ›› Start deadheading perennials and annuals to continue your bloom season. Deadheading is just cutting off or pinching off the spent blooms. It’s best to pinch/cut back to the next leaf so you don’t have ugly stalks sticking up. ›› Pinch back plants that tend to be leggy. Zinnias, coleus, salvia, and petunias will be bushier and have more blooms if you pinch the tops out regularly. ›› Don’t cut back bulb foliage until it turns yellow. They have to store up energy for next year’s bloom. You can also divide bulbs after they yellow if they’re overcrowded. A little BulbTone or bone meal will help them be stronger next year. ›› You can still sow seeds of fast growing summer annuals like sunflowers and vegetables such as squash and melons. ›› You can never stop weeding! If you do, then the alien weed monsters will take over the earth! Pre-emergent herbicides will stop weed seeds from germinating if you ever do manage to eradicate the weeds from your yard. ›› Pay attention to your lawn mowers. Keep the blades sharp, and try to mow in different directions every time. ›› Don’t use a weed whacker around thin barked trees like dogwoods. It will damage them and can lead to a premature demise. ›› Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders full and birdbaths clean. Most birds are feeding hatchlings and appreciate the help. ›› Mulch can be put down, and old mulch should be “fluffed” if it has formed a crust. That’s all for this month. Stop in and check us out frequently, because we’re getting trucks in daily this time of year. Don’t forget to check our website, meadowviewgreenhouse.com, for other information. Now go on out and play in the dirt!

UT Gardens Named as Tennessee’s Botanical Garden overnor Bill Haslam has signed a bill designating the University of Tennessee Gardens as the official botanical garden for the Volunteer State. The UT Gardens are operated by the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and can be found in three locations: the UTIA campus in Knoxville, the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Jackson, and the recently added location at the Plateau AgResearch and Education Center in Crossville. The UT Gardens’ mission is to cultivate an appreciation of plants through horticultural displays, educational programs, and research. Every year more than 100,000 visitors travel to UT Gardens locations to attend one of the many special events and educational seminars or simply to explore the beautiful grounds. The gardens also serve as an outdoor laboratory where researchers evaluate the performance and landscape appeal of each plant. Dr. Susan Hamilton, director of the UT Gardens, is elated about the statewide recognition. “Everyone associated with the gardens, from faculty, staff, and student interns to the many volunteers, Master Gardeners, and donors, has worked hard to present an outstanding collection of public gardens,” she said. “To be recognized as the state botanical garden is a great honor. The designation also heightens awareness of one of Tennessee’s best botanical resources.” Hamilton thanked State Senator Becky Duncan Massey of Knoxville and State Representative Jimmy Eldridge of Jackson for being the primary sponsors of the legislation. The designation passed unanimously in both the state senate and house. Previously, Tennessee did not have an official botanical garden. A botanical garden is defined as a garden where experts study, exhibit, and teach about plants. The original UT Gardens location in Knoxville is celebrating 30 years of landscape research and education. Established in 1983 by the UT Department of Plant Sciences, the UT Gardens have grown into a nationally recognized research and teaching site. They are recognized as one out of 51 official All American Selections (AAS) test sites in the United States, conducting evaluations assessing heat and cold tolerance, flower production, plant uniformity, flower and plant size, pest resistance, and landscape appeal. Such information is important to commercial

Roof Maintenance Tips for the Seasons

From intense heat to extreme snow, your roof protects your house from the elements all year long. When is the last time you checked to make sure your roof was in good shape? No matter what the seasons are like, now is the time to begin preparation for extreme weather by giving your roof a second look. Regardless of the climate, it’s imperative that your roof stays up-to-date so it can protect your home efficiently. Time-consuming roof projects can be a nuisance and a stress to homeowners. But, by staying on top of repairs, a roof will stay well maintained.

Spring

Summer

Fall

Spring brings warmer temperatures, green grass, and flowers, but it also brings spring rain. While spring rain may be great for your garden, it can severely damage your home if your roof is out of shape. Have your roof professionally inspected for any problems winter storms may have caused. Finding and fixing leaks is important so the rainwater doesn’t drip into your attic. Fixing leaks early will help you avoid problems later. Water from spring rain needs to have access to easy drainage so it doesn’t saturate your roof. Check your gutters for leaks and clean out leaves and debris that winter has left behind.

When the temperatures start to rise, it’s important to assure that your roof can breathe. The area underneath your roof needs access to cooler air so the warm, expanding air can escape. Allowing the warm air to escape can help the home maintain a comfortable temperature without overworking your air conditioning unit. When you consider how hot the temperature can get inside your attic, it’s easy to see why proper ventilation is so important. It’s important to inspect your ventilation system, both inside and out. Ensure that nothing could block the escape of air, such as insulation or debris, and look for signs of wear that indicate you need to update your ventilation system. Under-ventilated attic space can lead to higher cooling costs and accelerate the aging of shingles.

As the summer heat starts to break and the kids go back to school, fall provides the perfect time to ensure your home is protected for winter. If your roofing system is not up to standard, it may be time for new shingles. Shingles provide great protection for your home, but, like everything else, reinforcing them with back-up makes them stronger. Before having your new shingles installed, consider reinforcing your roof with an extra layer of protection. Underlayments can help give your roof an extra layer of protection against rain and snow.

Your roof makes up around 50% of your home’s exterior. Something that is such a large part of your home and provides protection to your family and your belongings should be well maintained. By spreading your roof checkups throughout the seasons, you can ensure that your roof is always in the best shape possible. A well-kept roof means a happy house. 64

Executive Bonus Plans

A

R e c r u i t, r e wa r d , a n d r e ta i n y o u r b e s t e m p l o y e e s re you looking for

an efficient way to recruit, reward, and retain key employees? Consider an Executive Bonus Plan – it’s one of the simplest nonqualified plans available today. An Executive Bonus Plan allows the employer to pay a bonus, or salary increase, to selected employees subject to reasonable compensation guidelines. Each employee covered by the plan then uses the bonus money to purchase life insurance on his or her own life. Alternatively, the bonus may be in the form of premiums paid directly to the insurance carrier on the executive’s behalf. Employees must pay income tax on the bonus; however, the employer can write another “bonus” check to cover a significant portion of the income tax liability. Each bonus given will incur additional income tax to the recipient. The employee is the owner and insured of the policy, so neither the employer nor any of its creditors will have any control over the policy’s cash value. The employer, however, may elect to restrict the

executive’s access to the cash value through a special policy endorsement commonly referred to as “golden handcuffs.” Cash value access would therefore be contingent upon the employee reaching some specific performance goals, tenure requirements, or both.

The Concern

Successful employers are always concerned about positioning their companies for future growth and expansion. It’s no secret that an outstanding executive team and an exceptional benefits package can help foster a successful environment. However, limits placed upon qualified retirement plan contributions often negatively impact higher salaried executives, thus adversely affecting their total benefits package. With these executives driving the company’s success, many employers would like to establish an effective compensation plan that helps recruit, reward, and retain key employees.

The Solution

One possible executive benefit planning technique is the Executive Bonus Plan. With

this strategy, the employer provides cash bonuses to key executives that can be used to purchase a life insurance policy or may pay premiums directly to the carrier on behalf of the employee. These bonuses are treated as taxable income to the executive; however, the employer can also offer executives a “double bonus” to help offset the income tax associated with the bonus. The life insurance policy is designed to provide key employees with a survivor benefit in the event of death and may also provide a taxfree source of potential cash accumulation for future retirement income. TRAVEL TENNESSEE :

From its very beginnings, Nashville grew from a foundation built on music. usic has been the common

thread connecting the life and soul of the city and its people, and visitors have ventured here to experience the music that weaves such a fundamental pattern in its cultural, business, and social fabric. Nashville’s earliest settlers celebrated in the late 1700s with fiddle tunes and buck dancing after safely disembarking on the shores of the Cumberland River, a spot now commemorated on First Avenue North with a replica of the original Fort Nashborough. Nashville’s first “celebrity,” the noted frontiersman and Congressman Davy Crockett, was known far and wide for his colorful stories and fiddle playing. As the 1800s unfolded, Nashville grew to become a national center for music publishing. The first around-the-world tour by a musical act was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University. Their efforts helped fund the

school’s mission of educating freed slaves after the Civil War and also put Nashville on the map as a global music center. In fact, upon playing for the Queen of England, the queen stated the Fisk Jubilee Singers must come from the “Music City.” In 1897, a group of Confederate veterans chose Nashville as the site of a massive reunion. The event was held at the former tabernacle that would later become known as the Ryman Auditorium. So many former Confederate soldiers poured into town that a new balcony was built inside the tabernacle to accommodate their great numbers. It was dubbed “The Confederate Gallery,” a designation still visible today as the Ryman continues to host an array of musical events. Before even the Ryman became known as the downtown home of the Grand Ole Opry, it already enjoyed a national reputation. Enrico Caruso, John Phillip Sousa, and the Vienna Orchestra gave roofraising performances there that earned the Ryman the nickname “Carnegie Hall of the South.” The Ryman’s

unrivaled acoustic qualities continue today – it has received Pollstar magazine’s prestigious “Theater of the Year” award four times in the past 10 years as the best auditorium in the nation to experience live music. In 1925, the establishment of radio station WSM and its launch of the broadcast that would be called the Grand Ole Opry further secured Nashville’s reputation as a musical center and sparked its durable nickname of Music City. The Opry, still staged live every week, is America’s longest-running radio show, in continuous production for more than 85 years. It ignited the careers of hundreds of country stars and lit the fuse for Nashville to explode into a geographic center for touring and recording. The modernday empire of Music Row, a collection of recordGrand Ole Opry ing studios, record labels, entertainment offices, and other music-associated businesses, populates the area around 16th and 17th Avenues South. Nashville has also long been known as the “Songwriting Capital of the World.” Songwriters Schermerhorn Symphony Center from all over the world

come to Music City to learn the art and share their passion of songwriting. The famous Bluebird Cafe showcases songwriters performing their original music in an intimate “in the round” setting that was created in Nashville and allows them to share the stories of inspiration behind their songs. Nashville Songwriters Association International, NSAI, which fosters the art of songwriting and works to protect artists’ rights, is headquartered here. The annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival Country Music Hall of Fame Museum & Walk of Fame Park puts these songwriters somewhere they’re not use to being: in the spotlight. During the course of five days, more than 300 songwriters perform at venues around town. In recent years, cable television has broadFrist Center for the Visual Arts cast Music City’s stars and music to the world. CMT and GAC have taken country music to a new level of acclaim and recognition. The gospel music series hosted by Nashville’s Bobby Jones on Black Entertainment Television is now cable’s longest-running program. Nashville has also become a hub for pop, rock, bluegrass, Americana, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues, and soul music. Rolling Stone recently gave Nashville the title of “Best Music Scene.” Artists like Robert Plant, Kid Rock, Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, and Michael Buble, among many others, have come to Music City to write and record. Names like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Michael McDonald, Keb’ Mo’, Sheryl Crow, Paramore, Hot Chelle Rae, and Jack White have chosen to call Nashville home. Nashville is home to United Record Pressing, North America’s largest volume producing vinyl record plant. Opened in 1949, United Record Pressing has pressed vinyl records for everyone from Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles to Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Ludacris. The Schermerhorn Symphony Center, home to the renowned, Grammy award-winning Nashville Symphony, anchors the downtown end of the recently designated Music Mile. The Music Mile is a symbolic stretch of roadway connecting the $123 million Symphony Center with the music district of Music Row, the vibrant new entertainment venues on Demonbreun Street, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Music City Walk of Fame, and the Bridgestone Arena. The Music Mile perfectly illustrates how the music of Music City is indeed a common thread throughout the business, cultural, and entertainment sectors of Nashville. Live music can be seen and heard every day and night of the week in Nashville. The world-famous honky tonks, located on Broadway, offer free, live music 365 days a year. With more than 130 music venues around town, ranging from large arenas and concert halls to small clubs and featuring nearly every genre of music, it’s easy to see why this is the city that “music calls home.” Nashville’s connection to music is unequaled, and its reputation as Music City has been consistently proven for more than 200 years. Welcome to the city where music is written, recorded, and performed every single day. Welcome to Music City.

are elements of satire that thread through the language, plot, and character like fine embroidery that, when looked at as a whole, appears perfectly constructed and deceptively simple,” said director Gary English. “A pure comedy to be sure, Razzle nevertheless points to the ever present and often lovable hypocrisy of the rising middle class in every time period as they chase the rich and aristocratic elements of society in their desire to be more like them in dress, behavior, and, of course, in the pursuit of adventure and the good life.” The cast is comprised of professional actors, graduate actors, and undergraduate actors. “On the Razzle” runs through May 12th. The hilarious “On the Razzle” plays on the

Clarence Brown Theatre main stage now through May 12th. When their boss goes away, two country store clerks close up shop and “escape” to the big city of Vienna for an adventure they won’t soon forget! The production is a fast-paced farce complete with slapstick shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, and romantic complications, all combined with trademark Tom Stoppard wit and wordplay. The basic story for Tom Stoppard’s “On the Razzle” has a long and interesting history. It was based on a play by Johann Nestroy, entitled “Einen Jux will er sich machen” (He’s Out for a Fling). Nestroy’s play was itself based on a one-act by John Oxenford, entitled “A Day Well Spent.” In addition to providing the source text for “On the Razzle,” Nestroy’s play was also the basis for Thorton Wilder’s play “The Merchant of Yonkers,” which he re-wrote and re-titled “The Matchmaker,” and which was later turned into the musical “Hello Dolly!” “While this production should likely be viewed as a farce, Stoppard never writes anything without referencing history and the social context of his work in some way, so there

Arthur Q. Smith with stringed instrument, circa 1953 (TAMIS, Pritchett Family Collection)

Arthur Q. Smith:

Missing in Action The WNOX radio studios, now an open

space between two surrounding buildings located at 110 South Gay Street, previously served as a tabernacle, but by the mid 1930s, had became the focal point for a variety of local old time and country music artists to display their talents. The AM station boasted a signal of 10,000 watts and reached, in addition to East Tennessee, into Kentucky, North Carolina, and southwest Virginia. Hundreds of talented musicians from surrounding areas flocked to the station for exposure on the Midday Merry Go Round and Tennessee Barn Dance programs hosted by promoterannouncer, Lowell Blanchard. The alumni of Knoxville-based talent featured on WNOX that later went on to national fame and fortune in Nashville could serve as a who’s who list of country music royalty during its golden years: Roy Acuff, the Carter Family, Chet Atkins, Archie Campbell, and Flatt and Scruggs, just to name a few. Each of these artists received major career boosts from appearing on WNOX, and all purchased hit songs by a now-forgotten Knoxville tunesmith by the name of Arthur Q. Smith. The history of songwriter Arthur Q. Smith is an intriguing, yet tragic story. Born in Griffin, Georgia, in 1909, James Arthur Pritchett grew up in the coalmines of Harlan, Kentucky. The musically gifted Pritchett hitched a ride to Knoxville during the mid1930s, most likely attracted to the city by the then-thriving country music scene at WNOX. Pritchett impressed radio announcer, Lowell Blanchard, enough to give him not only a

70

regular spot on the Midday Merry Go Round program, but a new name as well. From 1936 on, Pritchett would be known as Arthur Q. Smith, the Tennessee Corn Shucker. The plan was a simple one. For the price of a bottle of whiskey, Smith would sell a song outright, including the copyright. The buyer could then attach his or her own name to the song and reap vast recording royalty checks if it hit with the public. Many of Smith’s tunes did just that. The list of seminal and groundbreaking country music classics written and sold by the talented Smith is simply

phenomenal: “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could,” “Rainbow at Midnight,” “If Teardrops Were Pennies,” “I Overlooked an Orchid,” and “Missing in Action,” to name a few. A surprising and little-known fact is that many of country music’s popular songs of the era were written, purchased, and sold almost directly across the street from the WNOX studios. The Three Feathers Grill, located at 101 South Gay Street, has recently received a major renovation by Dewhirst Properties and is now home to a contemporary furniture store. But, in 1950, The Three Feathers served as a home office for Arthur Q. Smith. In order to finance his ever-increasing alcoholism, Smith made arrangements with restaurant proprietors, Leonard and Helen Shersky, in which they would pay off his bar tab in exchange for half or whole interest in his songs. The Sherskys would occasionally resell the songs to other local artists such as Carl and Pearl Butler, Don Gibson, and Jim Eanes. To this day, Helen Kaye (Shersky) holds partial copyrights on 33 Arthur Q. Smith originals, including half interest in the best-selling “Missing in Action,” a then-sizable hit for Ernest Tubb. It was a cozy arrangement that lasted until 1952, when Leonard Shersky packed up his family and moved to Oak Ridge, leaving his younger brother,Harold, asthesoleremainingSherskyto operate an eatery on Gay Street. The move was the beginning of the end for Arthur Q. Smith. Smith spent the remainder of his short life working a variety of odd jobs in order to make ends meet and maintain his liquor habit. Although hundreds of his works had helped enrich and promote fame for others, Smith died alone in 1963, discovered in a Vine Avenue flophouse. According to Smith’s son, James, his father had seven cents in his pocket. It’s difficult to underestimate the large and important role that both Knoxville and Arthur Q. Smith played in the development of the country music industry. Smith’s style and sound helped shape and define the music of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Although receiving little credit for his work today, Smith’s far-reaching influence and musical legacy can still be felt today when anyone listens to a classic country track by Carl Smith, Roy Acuff, or Ernest Tubb.

Knox County High School Teacher of the Year

Wanda Lacy had two very strong influ-

ences in her young life that inspired her to become an educator: Her father and her teachers. They have reason to be proud, as Lacy has been named Knox County’s Teacher of the Year for high school. “There are so many excellent and dedicated teachers in Knox County,” she said. “I am amazed and honored to be Knox County’s High School Teacher of the Year. It is very rewarding to receive such honor for doing something that I love to do.” Wanda has been teaching at Farragut High School for 29 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in math education and a master’s degree in mathematics, both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Wanda’s father instilled in her a love of learning at an early age. “My father did not finish high school because he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II,” said Wanda. “My father’s experience in the Navy and his other jobs after the war caused him to appreciate the

Too Good to Pass Up At least once a week, a client or perspective client will tell me that they just couldn’t pass up an advertising opportunity because of the low price. I usually congratulate them, although I often contemplate just how good of a deal they really received. For me, I’ve always tried to define those unique characteristics that successfully differentiate me from my competition and then understanding just who my target audience was. If you know what differentiates you in the marketplace and who your target audience is, then advertising need not be that big a mystery. For example, if you sell upscale women’s apparel that targets working women, then you will want to avoid television or radio spots that air while these women are at work. Radio might be a great option on the drive to or from work, and although more expensive, should produce far better results than the bargain slots that air when your target customer is not likely listening. If your target audience is just a short

distance from your retail location, then a well placed billboard in close proximity might make sense. A print ad in a publication that saturates your target audience might also make sense. But if you’re in a competitive marketplace where you excel in customer service, a print ad may not allow you to successfully differentiate yourself. In such cases, you may also require advertorial content to accomplish your objective. While all of this may seem very confusing, it need not be. Ask yourself: • What differentiates me from my competitors? • Who is my target audience? • What is the most effective advertising platform to reach my target audience? Avoid advertising decisions solely on the basis of price. Consider each dollar spent on advertising as an investment. If a low price has a low return, it’s still a poor investment.

Strive to achieve the greatest return of each advertising dollar invested. Personally, I’d rather spend the same amount of money on a single radio spot that has a great message, that airs at just the right time, and that targets more of my potential customers than 10 spots that air at the wrong time, on the wrong station, with the wrong message, and that targets few of my potential customers. The same is true of print, television, online, billboards, and other platforms. I believe that 70 to 90% of all advertising dollars are invested poorly and can be saved or invested elsewhere. This coming from a guy who sells advertising for a living. Maybe you should consider passing up that deal that is too good to pass up.

The Power of Thinking BU S INE S S BA S IC S by Beth Townsend Recently on my iPod I discovered a book on tape. It was Norman Vincent Peale’s “The Power of Positive Thinking.” Though the book had been on my iPod for years, I had never listened to it. Most people have heard of it and millions read it. It is widely recognized by many as a pivotal book in learning to train your brain to think more positively. My discovery happened on a day while driving for hours, so I decided to listen. Captivated by Dr. Peale’s message, I listened again and have since listened to it several times during a period of a few weeks. It shares such a powerful message: simple, yet admittedly easier said than done. The personal challenge is to discipline your thoughts until they become more positive. No one can be truly positive all the time; however, our thought patterns can be changed if we are committed to the process. Though many skeptics discount the positive thinking theory, it’s difficult to argue the benefits. Due to the fact that we think most of our waking hours, it seems logical to try to make that constant action more positive than negative, if not for ourselves, for those we spend our time with. It’s difficult to argue that people

who are more positive are more enjoyable to be around, while those with more negative mindsets can easily drain us of energy and enthusiasm.

How do we become more positive?

Thoughts often become words. So if you notice a negative thought pattern, simply acknowledge it and start to change it. For example, “This economy is so bad no one can do well.” Replace that mindset with “If I am willing to work hard, I know I can succeed.” Begin to inventory what your mind meditates on, and over time, change it by reprogramming it. It’s simple but takes repetition. Don’t say things you don’t want to happen. Simply catch the words before you speak them. “This is going to be a bad day, I can feel it.” Just think about the effect on you and those around you. Though I’m no Dr. Phil, it makes sense that those spoken words would impact your expectations. There are many that would likely agree that too many words are spoken without thought to the outcome of those who hear them. Thoughts, words, and actions have a ripple

effect! Actions are often the result of thoughts that have become words. We change our actions by changing our thought patterns and being consistently careful of what we say. Are some people more positive than others? Sure, life happens, and many have had difficult journeys. It’s not about pretending life is always good. That is unreasonable. But life is better when we decide to become more positive and make an effort to dwell on good things as opposed to bad. Thinking is what we do; it’s a powerful action we should not take for granted. Some are positive, others negative. Which do you prefer?

Relationships

by D e a nn a Br a nn, P h . D.

Blending Families, Blending Baggage: Four Common Family Patterns How many times have you caught yourself thinking “I sound just like my mother” or “I just reacted like my father!” Believe me, we all do this. Even though we grow up and away from our parents, we’re still products of our families, environment, and life situations. As much as we want to believe we’ve left that all behind, we haven’t. When we marry, we bring our colorful back-story into our new family dynamic, which is often most evident in the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Understanding what happens when we blend these families and all their emotional baggage can help us navigate the rough patches. Here are the most common patterns that emerge: Camelot: The mother-in-law has created a new identity from that of “mom” and respects her son and daughter-in-law as adults. The daughter-in-law has a strong sense of who she is and feels secure in her relationship with her husband. The husband/son is comfortable with who he is as a man and is clear on where his family priorities lie. Walking on eggshells: The motherin-law struggles with letting go of her role, tending to mother not only her son, but also her daughter-in-law. The daughter-in-law

Etiquette

often appears together, but inside she is filled with self-doubt and uncertainty (and so is quick to see her mother-in-law as critical and judgmental of her). The husband/son feels completely caught in the middle. Does she seem nuts to you? This pattern has two versions:

» When the daughter-in-law seems nuts: The mother-in-law is comfortable and

at ease in her new role, but to everyone’s confusion and dismay, the daughter-in-law tends to twist the most innocent of situations. She believes she is right – no matter what – and heaven help anyone she targets. The husband/ son has no idea what to do and often avoids his family and his wife.

» When the mother-in-law seems nuts: The daughter-in-law and her husband

are both confident and comfortable with who they are and feel they can handle anything – except his mother. The mother-in-law displays extreme, over-the-top behavior with no concern for its effect on others, oblivious to anyone else’s wants or needs. It is what it is: The mother-in-law likes her daughter-in-law and really wants a relationship with her, but she doesn’t know how to

make that happen. This causes her to make many mistakes. The daughterin-law doesn’t dislike her mother-in-law, but she doesn’t really want a separate relationship with her. The status quo suits her just fine. The husband/son doesn’t have much affect on the women’s relationship, but his actions can have an affect on his marriage. Chances are you’ll identify with one of these patterns. But don’t fret. That doesn’t mean you will forever remain stuck in that pattern and its dynamics. Fortunately, people grow and change all the time, and now that you have a little more insight into your particular family dynamic, you now have a great opportunity to change the pattern for the better. Here’s hoping you’ll be successful! Dr. Brann holds a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology and a Ph.D. in Psychobiological Anthropology. www.drdeannabrann.com info@drdeannabrann.com

Social Media Etiquette When Emily Post was writing her man-

ner’s book, social media didn’t exist. With each decade comes new discoveries and new habits formed by society. With this usually comes the need to set some guidelines and rules of conduct surrounding these new gadgets and such. Social media is definitely in its infancy, although it has grown by leaps and bounds in just the past two to three years. Now, people say “post it to Facebook,” “pin it,” “text it,” etc. Let’s discuss a few etiquette considerations we might want to consider when using social media. 1. Don’t be a me, myself, and I poster. This means that every post on Facebook should not be about you and what you’re doing, what you’re wearing, what you’re thinking, etc. Post things about others, great news about family, or cool community events to go to – just anything other than all about you. 2. Never, never, never post pictures of others without their permission unless you are certain they would absolutely love the picture. Often I see people post pictures they’re in and 74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2013

they look great, but the other people in the picture have their eyes closed or have a funny face, etc. Everyone should look great in the picture if you’re going to post it for the whole world to see. 3. Don’t invite people to join too many “causes.” It’s important to pick and choose the causes you want to invite your friends to support so you don’t wear them out with silly or repetitive invitations. 4. Don’t use foul language on social media. Yes, this is a FREE country, and yes, we have freedom of speech in this country, but it’s not polite to just assume that we have no obligation to protect children or others from obscene posts when they haven’t asked to see them. 5. Never post really bad news like a family death or a family tragedy on a social media site until you are sure that all appropriate phone calls have been made first. It is really hurtful to find out through social media that a close family member or friend has passed away and no one took the time to call to let you know personally.

6. Remember that everything we post is permanent. Even if you delete it later, you can never be certain that it’s deleted everywhere. Think before you hit that post button, “Is what I’m about to post going to cause hurt, misunderstanding, or anger to others?” If so, wait one hour, and if you still want to post, then be prepared for the consequences if you proceed. Social media is a wonderful way for friends and family to stay connected. Be sure you’re sensitive to others when sharing information, remembering that we should be ladies and gentlemen at all times, even on Facebook. Monica Irvine, Certified Etiquette Instructor

Fat Reduction That Works ith spring and

summer just around the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically studied non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape.

If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device which utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices which can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas

of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered, for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA last year, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, SmartLipo may be the answer. SmartLipo was the first laser cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). It is a minimally invasive procedure that is an enhancement to the well-established procedure known as tumescent microcannular liposuction. SmartLipo is an in-office procedure that is performed with local anesthesia and requires very little downtime. Most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated with this device. The neck,

arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of both the Liposonix and SmartLipo procedures in Knoxville. We would enjoy meeting with you to discuss which procedure would best suit your needs. Call to schedule a complimentary consultation and receive discounted pricing through the month of May.
