Warming temperatures and increasing humidity are the ideal catalysts for indoor mold and mildew. Discover how Jeremy and Ashley Akers, owners of Mold Drs. USA, can help you mitigate these risks and protect your family from the health risks associated with both mold and mildew.

From the Publisher AT THE END OF MAY, we

celebrate Memorial Day when we honor and remember all those who have given of themselves in service to our country. This includes not only military personnel but also those who serve in their local communities such as firefighters and law enforcement. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we had an opportunity to interview a local law enforcement trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Lowell Russell, who remarkably survived a tragic accident. My husband and I first met Lowell a number of years ago when he was investigating a car accident near our home in Vonore. Since that first meeting, we continued to see Lowell on patrol in our area and became aware of Frankie Watson, a young man Lowell mentored since 2004 and who since became a U.S. Marine who was killed in service to our country in Afghanistan. We attended 4

Frankie’s hero’s welcome home when his remains arrived back in the states for burial. The funeral procession down Highway 411 was inspiring, with the whole stretch of highway lined with people and flags paying their respects. Lowell lost a friend that day, and little did he know what lay ahead for him. Lowell wrote a book about his accident and how his faith played a major role in his recovery. The book, Trial by Fire, is also Lowell’s way of paying tribute to Frankie, as well as other fallen military members and law enforcement. In tribute to Frankie, Lowell, and all who have given of their lives in service to our country and communities, we salute you. Your sacrifices and courage will be remembered not only this Memorial Day but every day.

Specializing in Water Damage and Mold Remediation

F YOU’RE a native Tennessean,

you already understand how pervasive mold can be. If you’re a transplant from another part of the country, you’ll soon discover what native Tennesseans already understand about mold. But whether you’re a Tennessee native or a transplant, what you might not know is just how harmful mold can be to your family’s health, not to mention the physical damage it can do to your home. While mold within your home can go undetected, it can still become the source of allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Then there is the mold homeowners discover that they attempt to remediate themselves or contract out, often to contractors who lack the training and experience necessary to eliminate mold. At Mold Drs. USA, local entrepreneurs and husband and wife team, Jeremy and Ashley Akers, have combined the training, experience, and certifications necessary to create Knoxville area’s only ACAC certified residential mold remediation company. While there are other companies that offer mold remediation services, Mold Drs. USA is your only ACAC certified residential mold remediation option. EK: Jeremy, what most of our readers are likely unaware of is that your interest in mold remediation goes back to your early childhood. Explain. Jeremy: Well, I had experienced the typical East Tennessee allergies for many years, and my family just assumed it was like everyone else’s allergies. It wasn’t until my father started removing baseboards, while remodeling our 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2015

Joists and subfloor are the most common areas for mold to thrive. A proper vapor barrier installation can lower the risk of abnormal mold growth on these surfaces. home, that he realized everything was covered with mold. To make matters worse, my bedroom was in the basement, which is the perfect breeding ground in the majority of homes for mold in East Tennessee. EK: In part, due to our homes becoming more energy efficient, mold related problems have actually worsened. Why is that? Ashley: In some cases, yes, this is true. The more energy efficient and air tight your home is, the more likely your home is to trap unwanted contaminants inside the living

space that can be the source of mold. EK: Many homeowners take on mold problems as do-it-yourselfers. I guess their tool of choice is chlorine bleach. Is bleach a good choice for mold remediation? Jeremy: First, let me add to what Ashley just said. While it’s great to have an energy efficient, air tight home, it’s also important to have a balanced heating and air conditioning system. Poorly designed or improperly maintained HVAC systems can contribute to the potential for mold in your home as well. With regard to bleach, we have many business and residential customers that ask us on a regular basis if bleach can solve their mold problems. The answer is no. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) excludes bleach as a mold cleaning agent. Unfortunately, we see all too many customers pay for mold remediation services where bleach was used. On non-porous surfaces (porcelain tile, metal), bleach does work. However, on porous surfaces (a typical crawlspace/basement, baseboards, walls, etc.), bleach does not work. Simply put, the properties of chlorine bleach prevent bleach from penetrating many of today’s building product surfaces. EK: A homeowner’s second choice is to hire a mold remediation company. But with so many companies claiming to be mold remediation specialists, how can homeowners know who they can trust? Ashley: Unfortunately, there are many companies in our area that claim to be mold remediation specialists, although they have little or no training at all. Sadly, the average

Cupping hardwood floors, which is the result of moisture below the surface.

Humidity is present in the crawlspace and can rest between the insulation and subfloor. This is a stagnant cavity that has little to zero air flow. Once the insulation is contaminated, it is virtually impossible to clean it. Replacement is advised. consumer has no idea that the contractor that they may be considering lacks even the basic skills needed to detect and eliminate their mold problems. Also, they often charge more than legitimate mold remediation companies. Every state is different on what they hold a business accountable for. Most states protect their citizens by regulating mold remediation contractors. Tennessee does not, and as a concerned mother, I hope this changes in the future. Your best protection until then is to insist that the contractor you’re considering is ACAC Certified. EK: So what you’re telling our readers is that inexperienced do-it-yourselfers and mold remediation specialists can actually make a bad mold problem even worse? Jeremy: Absolutely, that is exactly what we are saying. Just removing the mold damaged building material is not the solution. What consumers need to understand is that if you can see mold, then the problem is likely even more pervasive then it appears, because what you can’t see is even more concerning. Mold has to be present in the air before it begins growing on building material surfaces. EK: If mold exists in our homes but goes undetected, what signs should a homeowner look for? Ashley: If undetected, you wouldn’t necessarily observe any obvious signs (mold growing on walls, smells lingering). As an example, we recently completed work on a home in Athens. The customer was suffering from pulmonary embolism. The family couldn’t see any visible signs of mold in the home (living space or the crawlspace). A plumber discovered a massive sewer leak that was discharging waste for an unknown period of time into their crawlspace. They had no idea that their crawlspace was full of mold until this discovery. We always encourage customers to retain a third party to

provide testing that is analyzed by an independent lab. Many mold remediation companies provide their testing, which is a potential conflict of interest. For the same reasons that restaurants aren’t permitted to conduct their own health inspection, we feel strongly about requesting independent third party testing. It’s an issue of ethics. EK: In selecting a mold remediation company, what certifications are essential? Jeremy: I would recommend that consumers insist on an ACAC Certified Mold Remediation Contractor. ACAC is the only organization supported and recommended by the American Lung Association and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Building. The ACAC was the first organization to be listed as a prerequisite for state licensing. It is the only organization to see its certifications recommended by the U.S. Government. Only 70% of applicants for certification are accepted (after providing a work related resume), and then their application requires board review and approval. It is a lengthy and exhaustive process, but it offers customers the peace of mind they deserve when hiring a qualified mold remediation contractor. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Ashley: In such an unregulated marketplace as the mold remediation industry, we are saddened by the many stories we hear from customers who paid two to three times more

Redirecting downspouts is a sure fire way to minimize water in the crawlspace that could lead to an array of different issues. Adding an extension line to the downspout to carry the water away from the foundation will prove beneficial for years to come.

for mold remediation work to companies that did not have the required training or experience. To make matters worse, the customer now has to pay a certified contractor to remediate their mold problem. I encourage your readers, even though they may have an existing relationship with a company that offers mold remediation services, to insist on a second opinion. After all, your family’s health is at stake. As a mom, I appreciate things being done right. The health and well-being of your family members are as important to us as the health and well-being of our own children. I invite you to discover the Mold Drs. USA difference.

Water intrusion can be common in a lot of crawlspaces. This is present most times due to improper grades in the landscape or guttering issues. As the water evaporates, it creates a higher humidity, causing a greater chance for mold to thrive. It can also weaken foundations. Mold Drs. USA

Biltmore International Rose Trials Competition Set for May 29-30

HE JUDGING AND AWARDS

ceremony for t he t h i rd a n nua l Biltmore International Rose Trials competition is scheduled for Saturday, May 30. An international jury will select the winning roses in 12 categories. Since 2011, Biltmore’s historic Rose Garden has been home to the trials in which more than 90 varieties from growers and breeders worldwide have been planted and cared for by Biltmore’s expert horticulturalists. Each trial lasts two years, and a permanent jury judges the roses four times per year. During this year’s competition, the international and permanent juries will conduct the final round of judging for the trial group of 29 roses planted in 2013. Before entering their roses into trials and competition, breeders work on their creations for four or five years prior. Roses to be judged this year are from Canada, France, Ireland, Germany, the UK, and the U.S. The trials are a valuable way for the home gardener to learn what roses do well and what may be potential candidates for their own gardens. Trials of this type are open to rose breeders around the world, from professional to beginner. New rose varieties will be planted for trial each May. They are evaluated for overall health and rigor, fragrance, disease resistance, and ability to repeat bloom. Guests visiting Biltmore’s gardens may view the roses currently on trial in borders in the Walled Garden and areas near the historic Rose Garden. Peak blooming time in Biltmore’s rose garden occurs typically in mid-May and September. It’s OK to talk about it.™

Vaginal dryness, itching and burning? Now there’s something you can do about it that really works.

www.MonaLisaTouchTennessee.com

Dr. Walton Smith

Dr . Smith is an accredited provider of the MonaLisa Touch®, the most effective non-surgical and non-pharmalogogical solution for preventing and treating vaginal atrophy and its after-effects. So lets talk about the “it” that no one is talking about. What is “it”? Dr Smith: Well, we used to use the term Vaginal Atrophy. The newer term is Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause. But really, “it” is any of the bothersome symptoms related to decreased circulating estrogen. What are some examples? Dr Smith: Vaginal dryness, poor lubrication, and discomfort or pain with intercourse are probably the most common complaints. However, itching, discharge, increased sensitivity to yeast and bacterial infections as well as bladder frequency and urinary tract infections are also typical. Why does this happen? Dr Smith: When the bodies normal hormone levels decline due to natural or artificially induced menopause the vaginal skin begins to thin dramatically. The underlying collagen disappears and the blood vessels no longer supply as much oxygen and nutrients. The vagina and surrounding structures loose their elasticity and become fragile. Who does this effect? Dr Smith: All women will eventually enter menopause. Some will choose to use hormone replacement therapy, which will lower the chance for experiencing these symptoms. Some women are either not a candidate for hormone replacement or have chosen not to use it because of concerns of side effects. The current estimate is that up to 40% of women will experience some degree of these bothersome, and sometimes debilitating, symptoms. So this is mainly a problem for women over 50? Dr Smith: No! The average age of menopause in the United States is 50-51 but the normal range starts as young as 35. Many women will experience symptoms of declining hormones many years before their cycles actually stop. There are also the women who have undergone surgically induced menopause due to removal of their ovaries at the time of a hysterectomy. Breast cancer survivors are the other large group of women at particular risk for these types of symptoms.

865-541-1975

501 19th Street, Trustees Tower, Suite 401

How does Breast Cancer cause this problem? Dr Smith: The most common protocols to treat Breast Cancer involve short term and long term chemotherapies to reduce the amount of estrogen circulating in the body. These women quickly begin to experience vaginal symptoms from lack of estrogen. They are grateful to be surviving their cancer but struggle to deal with the unexpected impact to other areas of their life. So how can this treatment help? Dr Smith: We were fortunate at Fort Sanders Women’s Specialist to be invited to be the first practice in Tennessee to trial a fractional vaginal laser last year. Our trial patients saw dramatic results. We chose the MonaLisa Touch laser due to the quality of their clinical data and the fact that it had FDA approval. Dr Smith: The laser beam is split into a grid pattern that pierces the vaginal skin. This “injury” causes the release of fibroblasts, which then heal the area of injury. There are new blood vessels that appear and the underlying collagen remodels to a pre-menopausal state. The effects from one treatment by 6 weeks are dramatic. Is it painful? Dr Smith: Almost never. The treatments are performed without anesthesia in the office setting. The treatments take less than 10 minutes with no downtime. Most women have no discomfort at all. A few experience a slight vibration or tingle. Is this brand new? Dr Smith: This technology has been available in Europe for about three years. It is new to the United States. What is the success rate? Dr Smith: To date approximately 80% of women have seen up to a 90% improvement in their symptoms. Many with complete relief of their dryness and pain with intercourse.

Debunking the $1 Million Retirement Myth RECENTLY YET

another TV news reporter said we need to save a million dollars to afford retirement. Really? I respectfully disagree. It’s quite possible to create a comfortable retirement plan as long as your income expectations match your level of savings. Yvonne Marsh, CPA The retired lawyer who needs $12,000/month to sustain his lifestyle has different savings needs than the retired manager with a full pension and no mortgage. Most of us fall between these two extremes. Think of your income sources as a three-legged stool. Here are some tips to maximize each one: 1. Social Security – Don’t retire too early if Social Security will be your primary income source. Take advantage of spousal benefits if you’re married, plus the ability to increase benefits by 8% for each year you wait between ages 66 and 70. 2. Pension income – Choose wisely between the pension payout options your company offers. Make sure your spouse understands if your pension amount is reduced or stops at your passing. If you don’t have a company pension, consider creating your own pension annuity investment, using a portion of your retirement savings. This will provide another guaranteed paycheck (for you and your spouse) that you cannot outlive. Look for one that provides increasing income, which is a great hedge against inflation. 3. Investment income – Don’t apply one investment strategy to your entire portfolio. Work with a financial planner to determine how much of those investments you’ll use in the next 10 years, and apply your conservative strategy there. That frees you to apply a bit more growth strategy to the remaining investments. It’s a great way to maximize your investment returns without taking undue risk on funds you’ll need earlier in retirement. Call today for a complimentary one-hour meeting to learn more about creating an income plan that’s right for you, whether you have a million dollars or not!

Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal

I

F YOU’RE a Guns N’ Roses fan,

then you undoubtedly know who Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal is. For the uninitiated, he is one third of the nuclear guitar arsenal in the band. Ron is one of the most talented, prolific, hardest working artists in rock and roll. He’s also one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. I’ve interviewed the man twice, and I can honestly say that, after this interview, my opinion of the man has grown exponentially. What you see on stage is a man who is intensely driven and passionate about his craft; a man who throws two hundred percent of himself into anything he does. When I called Ron recently at his home in the Northeast, it was to talk about his new CD, “Little Brother Is Watching.” Before we drilled into that subject, though, I asked him how his venture into the hot sauce business was coming along and what the latest was with his charity work. “Going great! It’s spreading to all parts of the world, and I have distro from Dubai to all different places. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a whole other little subculture – the hot sauce subculture. It’s funny how similar it is to music, just a different passion. You find that when people are passionate about something, it doesn’t matter what it is. It’s people that are passionate about something. At all these food festivals, you see familiar faces, and we’re just enjoying what we enjoy.” As for the latest in his charity work, Ron shared, “I just came back from Pattaya, Thailand. I headlined the big bike festival – it’s like Sturgis. It was three days of doing gigs, and the guys that run the whole event have been doing it for 18 years. They have a children’s charity, Jesters Care for Kids, that

14

provides care for disabled kids, orphans, any kid in need. They help with their education, getting food in their stomachs, and clothes on their backs. We did all these events there, which raised $163,000. I want to see if I can help them step it up even more next year and keep trying to make a difference.” Segueing to the subject of the new CD (his 10th solo project), Ron shared how the CD came together. “For this one, I forced myself to write while I was touring. For me, I always had to choose between touring and writing, because they’re just two different mindsets. You exist for two different reasons, and I always found it hard to flip the switch. When you’re on tour, you are there for everybody else. Your time belongs to the fans, and I would always try to give every minute I could. That’s not something you can just quickly shut off. I couldn’t just shut it off, go into the hotel room, and start writing a song. I always need a minute, sort of, to decompress and reboot. I’d get that going and build momentum. I would never get a chance to do that on tour. I’d been doing so much touring during the last year that I’ve just not been writing. Finally, I just forced myself. It felt like driving with your foot slammed on the gas and your foot slammed on the brake at the same time. But it needed to be done, and I think good stuff came out of it. “I’m happy with the album. I’m happy with the way I sang what I wanted to sing, the way I wanted to tell whatever story I wanted to tell. I had more room, and I left myself more space for melody and production. I just let the song come through, so it didn’t get overshadowed with a fancy guitar riff. With the technical guitar stuff, it’s almost like a very strong spice. A little goes a long way. Even if you don’t do it that often, it

just jumps out. It can overshadow all the other flavors. I pulled back a little bit. Those moments are there, but I found a better balance between the melody and any technical stuff. I think it helps the song come through more.” There’s been rumblings about another project that Ron was reportedly working on called “The Art of Anarchy,” so I asked him about it. “It’s an interesting rock record. I hope people like it. I think people who have not heard Scott Weiland doing heavier stuff for a while will enjoy hearing him in this. A lot of the music sounds like old Metallica or Disturbed with a lot of dynamic changes musically.” There’s a lot that’s going on in Bumblefoot’s world, and you can stay on top of it and order “Little Brother Is Watching” by visiting www. bumblefoot.com. Lowell Russell W

ITHIN SECONDS of impact,

Sgt. Lowell Russell’s patrol car had engulfed in flames. The impact of the runaway semi-truck, whose driver had fallen asleep, mashed metal and broke bones. Smoke filled his lungs, and flames crept nearer as he sat unconscious, trapped by his life-saving seatbelt. Death surrounded Lowell Russell. Lowell has an unfortunate familiarity with death in his adult life. His mother and father each died unexpectedly within four months of each other in 2009. As a member of the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), he served many death notices to families that lost loved ones. Going beyond his duty as an officer of the law, Lowell often remained in contact with victims’ families for months, assisting with arrangements and offering support. “I’ve made it a personal goal to try and attend every funeral of any vehicle fatality I’ve worked in my career to support the families in their time of grief,” said Lowell. But his generosity goes beyond mere attendance. His presence and actions have helped shaped the lives of many. In 2011, a THP trooper attempted to pull over a young 20-year-old man. The young man was drunk and tried to flee, eventually crashing his car into a tree 15 feet from the road. According to reports, the trooper drove past the initial scene of the crash, claiming that he had lost sight of the vehicle. Lowell was on the young man’s front porch shortly after the wreck, serving a death notice to his father. The particular interaction stuck with his father. “I was seeing pain in his face, as he saw pain

in mine,” said the father of the victim. The victim’s father now gives speeches to public school children on the value of taking responsibility. The death of his son could have been avoided by making better decisions. But it was Sgt. Russell’s actions that inspired him. Dashboard cameras confirmed that the trooper drove past the young man’s car, not stopping to check on the driver. Lowell would present that tape to THP Internal Affairs, offering evidence against a senior officer. The trooper, who had been involved in a similar incident one year earlier, was fired by the THP. The victim’s father admires Lowell for “doing the right thing,” although it was something that could have negatively affected the trooper’s career. “If the Lowell Russell story never came out, I would not be giving speeches,” he said. “He is a hero.” Lowell’s story has been detailed in local and national news stories for more than three years now. The near-unbelievable timing of paramedics, police, and ordinary citizens that saved his life was described by the Knoxville Police Department’s Chief, David Rausch, as “divine intervention.” The burnt car, exploding ammunition, and unlikely box cutter are all detailed in his book, Trial by Fire. Lowell had no interest in writing the biography until he realized its potential. Every dollar earned from book sales are donated to the LCpl Frankie Watson Memorial Scholarship Fund, named after a young man whom Lowell had mentored. The fund provides money each year for one Sequoyah High School (Monroe County)

graduate to attend college to train for a career in public service. The relationship between Lowell and Frankie was forged in 2004 when Lowell gave the 14-year-old rides to football practice, letting him sleep in his guest bedroom when early practices required 6 am attendance. Frankie would go on to graduate high school and join the United States Marines. Along with Frankie’s parents, Lowell was on the notification list in case of his friend’s injury or death. On September 24, 2011, the trooper was told to return home when he arrived at work. On that day, it was Lowell who was informed by representatives from the Marine Corps that the Marine that he helped raise was dead – killed by an enemy sniper’s bullet in Afghanistan. “I just wanted to get Frankie’s story out,” said Lowell. Lowell’s book is his way of paying tribute to Frankie, as well as all fallen members of the military and law enforcement. Through all his struggles, Lowell has been able to find hope and gain perspective during times of despair. The former THP officer credits his religious faith in finding strength when faced with such tragic events, knowing there is a reason for the obstacles. “God is always preparing us for bigger trials down the road,” said Lowell. Lowell’s past has shaped every decision he makes and story he tells. But tragedies do not define his future. His faith will not allow that. Instead, Lowell will continue strengthening his voice – readying it for the next opportunity to tell the tales of heroes.

Asset Allocation: Hands Off or Hands On IN

A N Y stock market Ali c l i m a t e, p ro p e r a s s e t Swofford, PhD allocation matters. There are two schools of thought when it comes to diversification and asset allocation – hands off and hands on. Modern Portfolio Theory. MPT asserts that for every portfolio, there exists an “efficient frontier” – an ideal asset allocation among diversified asset classes that should efficiently balance maximum return and minimum risk.1 MPT has its fans – but also its critics. In the last 20+ years, many money managers have practiced a buy-and-hold style of portfolio management using the diversification principles of MPT. As markets dropped in 2008-09, critics pointed out the danger of buying and holding – you can “hold” positions too long. In the crisis, some investment advisors took a hands-on approach to portfolio management – others had always done so. Tactical Asset Management. Tactical asset management is an active type of asset management that adjusts allocations across different asset classes and market sectors. The theory is that active rebalancing of a portfolio helps an investor exploit market volatility and short-term performance momentum. Instead of sitting back and waiting for stocks to move higher, this approach moves assets in and out of sectors to try and profit from present and near-term conditions. The bottom line. The buy-and-hold adherents and critics agree on one thing – diversification is hugely important. If your assets are allocated across multiple “baskets” instead of one or two, you are theoretically less affected by the whims of the financial markets. Remember though that neither diversification nor asset allocation can ensure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market. So what is “proper” asset allocation for you? Only you and your financial advisor can determine that. Your time horizon, preferred investment style, accumulated assets, life goals, and financial objectives – these all have to be taken into consideration. It’s worth a conversation today. Want to know more about buy-and-hold vs. tactical investment styles? Attend our May 12th workshop. For more details, call Swofford Financial at 865-6900049 or visit www.swoffordfinancial.com.

Spring

The Glorious Colors of

M

AY IS HERE with

all its glory. Farmers’ markets open with a variety of the season’s most colorful array of vegetables. Knoxville’s own Dogwood Arts Festival, with all the beautiful trails of dogwoods and azaleas, kicked off spring last month with spectacular happenings. It is not surprising that Knoxville is considered one of the top places to visit in the spring by Top Events USA. With all this excitement, it’s time to get outside, exercise, plant gardens, clean up winter’s remains, and participate in all that Knoxville has to offer. The variety of colors from vegetables to flowers cannot go unnoticed. As we watch nature unfold with greener grass and green foliage, we understand the importance of the color green in nature. Markets are abundant with green peas, all types of leafy greens, radishes with edible green tops, bok choy, green scallions, and more. The color green may be seen as the color of life and renewal. It is associated with growth, harmony, and freshness and is the most restful and relaxing color for the human eye to view. Green color is the largest area on the visible spectrum and is considered the dominant color of nature. Just taking a walk outside, whether on the greenway, a trail in the Smokies, or your backyard, gives a feeling of comfort and peace. Spring is the time to cleanse the liver according to some alternative approaches to healing. The color green helps facilitate this process. Leafy green drinks and raw green

salads, including kale, Swiss chard, spinach, collards, scallions, bok choy, and lettuce, help the body to cleanse and rejuvenate. If you are feeling irritable, try a green drink of kale, spinach, apple, banana, and water. Blend together and drink for a refreshing and calming effect. Bok choy is one vegetable that deserves attention. It has sweet and nutritious stalks that are great for snacking. It is very low in calories. One hundred grams of bok choy has 13 calories, which is why it is in many weight reduction programs. It falls under the “zero calorie” category of food items since it facilitates calorie burn and thereby reduction in body weight. Because of anti-oxidant plant chemicals together with dietary fiber and vitamins, bok choy helps protect against breast, colon, and prostate cancers, as well as reduction in LDL (bad cholesterol) levels in the blood. It is a great source of vitamin A, carotenes, vitamin K, and B complexes vitamins of B6, B5, and B1. It also contains a moderate source of minerals such as calcium, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Try it for a delicious addition to any salad, in stir fry, or as raw snack with hummus or other bean spreads. Bok choy can be a refreshing and nutritious change. Spring is a time for cleansing and rejuvenation, and there’s no better way to do this than to learn from nature’s clues of utilizing the color green in your daily fare. It’s time to participate in all that spring has to offer while we strive to improve our health. The glorious colors of spring offer the best way to health.

The RAF volunteers are the hands and feet of the charitable operations and fulfill the mission every week. As summer approaches, RAF seeks support from the community. wonderful and meaningful organization,” said RAF Knoxville’s new Director of Mission Fulfillment, Carmel Hall. “The volunteers and staff have been very warm and encouraging. I just love the mission so much, and I’m excited to engage new volunteers and help them learn how to join in the heartfelt drive behind RAF. Everyone is welcomed at RAF, and we would love for you to join us either as a way to try it out or to become a regular volunteer!” In 2014, RAF volunteers donated more than 6,722 hours. This includes a core team of regular weekly volunteers; 17 of the regular weekly volunteers donated more than 100 hours each! It is easy to volunteer with RAF and join the steadfast, enthusiastic volunteer base. For more information, visit www.RAFKnoxville.org and select “Volunteer” from the “Get Involved” menu. From this page, prospective volunteers can view the various tasks, including floral deconstruction, floral arranging, workshop maintenance, and helping at special events. “I never go there without a smile. Volunteering with RAF keeps my hands in dirt and flowers and my mind up to speed with other sharp friends. So I go to RAF with a smile, I give my smile away and hang on to smiles from others, and then we get to pack

the smiles up and pass them on to others. GO RAF!” – Bettie, volunteer If you wish to volunteer with RAF, please view the available volunteer shifts on our website and contact Carmel Hall at 865-633-9082. “It feels good to see a smile, but it feels even better knowing you didn’t just leave flowers. You left hope and provided a little piece of mind that no one is ever alone.” – Cecil Scarbrough, RAF Volunteer Items RAF can use: » Scissors » Clippers » Towels » Wired ribbon » Cleaning supplies Donated items can be dropped off at the RAF facility, located at 2609 Hoitt Avenue in Knoxville. One-Two Punch of Hers and His Closet Organization

L

ET’S FACE it, when it comes to orga-

nizing the closet, men and women have very different needs. Is it possible to accommodate both their needs in one space? Let the battle of the sexes begin! Ding-ding! Round One – Shoes The average woman owns 30-50 pairs of shoes, whereas men generally have 8-12 pairs. Whatever the shoe count, adding layered shelving neatly displays a shoe collection and provides easy access to them. Summer flip flops can be put into a decorative basket to keep them in one place without taking up a lot of valuable closet space. Round Two – Clothes No contest. She wins this round. Women require two-thirds of the closet space for their clothing versus one-third for men. Tailored Living Knoxville’s co-owner and designer, Kathryn Norton, recommends installing a visual dividing unit, such as drawers or shelving, to divide his-and-hers zones. If the room is large enough, a small peninsula extending from a wall separates the two sides while providing additional storage. Round Three – Accessories There are plenty of choices that will be a knockout for both him and her. Save space and get organized with pull-out racks installed into the wall space. Pull-out racks are useful for ties, belts, scarves, and even costume jewelry. Another solution for keeping accessories organized is to add custom drawer dividers or a velvet-lined jewelry drawer. Tilt-out hampers, fold-out ironing boards, and slide-out mirrors are highly functional and take up very little space. Final Round – Decorative Options Depending on your style, this could prove to be a serious battleground. However, with a wide variety of choices, a drawn-out conflict can be avoided by accommodating both tastes. From traditional white, a wood-grain finish, or a modern look, everyone wins with a decorative finish. Drawer pulls, drawer fronts, and trim can be simple or decorative, whatever fits a family’s taste. And the Winner Is Both! With planning you will find the closet system that best accommodates both sexes while maximizing the closet’s storage space. It’s organization tailored to your life!

One challenge many of us experience during those periods of time when our homes are “buttoned up” is that dust and allergens are trapped inside. Your home’s HVAC and ceiling fans redistribute these contaminants throughout the entire house, as is evident by the dust on your furniture. No amount of dusting seems to alleviate the sneezing and coughing by family members that result. While there is no way to totally eliminate dust and allergens in your home, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce these airborne contaminants. One sure fire way is to remove dust and allergens from your home’s carpeting and Oriental rugs. While vacuuming helps, your vacuum only removes a small portion of the accumulated contaminants that are trapped deep in the fibers of your carpets and rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we offer homeowners two proven solutions to dust and allergens. For your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting, we offer a deep cleaning and extraction process that thoroughly cleans your carpets using only specially treated water from our truck-mounted cleaning plant that assures a level of clean that leaves our competition in the dust. For your home’s Oriental rugs, we offer our proprietary 11-step rug washing process at our state-of-the-art facility that achieves a level of clean that is simply not achievable any other way. Call us today, and discover for yourself a Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning level of clean – a level of clean that is nothing to sneeze at.

The way to help minimize the risk of getting bitten by mosquitoes is to use Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program, offered from May through October. Spraying mosquito repellants for protection can help, but it does not address the breeding sites of mosquitoes or eliminate them from your yard! The professionals at Dayton’s are trained in identifying specific areas to treat for achieving effective mosquito control. A major benefit of using Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program is that this treatment kills existing mosquitoes plus prevents mosquito immatures and eggs from becoming biting adults. Be watchful and eliminate standing water in potential breeding sites such as clogged rain gutters, flowerpot saucers, wheelbarrows, and watering cans.

Kids Love Summer Camp at Ijams A

lthough Ijams’ Summer Camps for kids do not begin until next month, May is the time to register your camper. In 2014, CityView Magazine named Ijams Nature Center Summer Camps one of the top three summer camps in Knoxville. Why? Because Ijams is fun! It’s packed with adventures and has more than 300 acres to explore.

NATURE DAY CAMP

Each week of Nature Day Camp has a different theme that provides campers with fun outdoor activities, special hands-on projects, and a host of exciting adventures. June 1-5: Monster Movie Week (Grades 2-5) Join Ijams for this hair-raising week. We’ll spend time exploring the not-so-scary critters of the animal world, scratching in the leaves for creepy crawlies, exploring a dark cave, and wading in a pirate’s creek. We’ll also invent some of our own eerie creations with costumes and face paint and make our own Ijams Monster Movies. June 8-12: Justice League of Ijams (Grades K-2) It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s the Justice League of Ijams! This “super” fun week is designed for campers loaded with S.H.P. – super hero potential. The camp will look at superheroes in the animal world, as well as help each camper discover their own innate superpowers. June 15-19: Intergalactic Adventure (Grades 3-5) This intrepid bunch of campers will embark on their own Jedi training. Through a series of team-based challenges and adventures, young padawans will learn the path of the light side. June 22-26: Heroes on the Half-Shell (Grades K-2) Cowabunga dude! Your little ninja turtles

will love this action-packed week of camp. Not only will they learn more about their reptilian nature, but they’ll also meet some other reptile superheroes of the natural world. June 29-July 3: Tennessee Tall Tales (Grades 3-5) Are you familiar with the legend of Barcus, the Tomb Raider? Not many are. This international mystery-seeker and archaeologist is quite secretive, and not much is known about him. Or is he just one of Ijams’ tall tales? But it doesn’t stop there. Your little treasure hunter will get to investigate an Egyptian tomb recently discovered in the distant lands of the Smoky Mountains. July 6-10: Despicable Ijams (Grades K-3) The story of the minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, they grow up to be not much more than that. Campers will learn about the notso-despicable side of nature and be among the first to see the new “Minions” movie! July 13-17: World Explorers (Grades 2-4) Campers will travel around the world in much less than 80 days during this whirlwind global adventure, exploring each region through music, art, dance, food, geography, history, ecosystems, and languages. Campers will also get a trip to the exotic Rainforests of Central Sevierville. July 20-24: Frozen in July (Grades 1-4) Do you wanna build a snowman? Well, at Ijams, we can do that even in July! We’ll have all kinds of frozen fun, from crystal creations

to glacial gloop! So join us as we explore the frosty side of nature and keep it cool in the summer. Some camps are worth melting for! July 27-31: Wet-n-Wild Week (Grades 2-4) Load up your water guns, slip-n-slides, and sprinklers, and join us for one of our most popular weeks of camp. We’ll go under the sea and down the river as we explore all the fun that water has to offer. Campers will start at the bottom of the ocean and explore the world of colorful coral and fascinating fish. Camp also includes a hike to an amazing waterfall in the Great Smokies.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CAMP

One of the most exciting camps in Knoxville, Outdoor Adventure Camp, is gearing up for its second year. Campers will explore the outdoors through hiking, climbing, paddling, and a brand-new aerial treetop adventure. This one-of-a-kind camp combines the excitement of recreational activities with the fun of hands-on nature exploration. It truly is the camp of a lifetime. This year we’re expanding this camp to offer this experience to a larger audience. Outdoor Explorers: Ages 8-10; Outdoor Adventurers: Ages 11-14. For more information about hours and costs, visit www.ijams.org/programs/ camps. To register for Nature Day Camp or Outdoor Adventure Camp, call Jenny at 865-577-4717, ext. 123. Jennifer Roder is education director at Ijams, creator of fun programs for kids of all ages.

Summer Is Upon Us! JUST TYPING those words sends a

shiver of anticipation through my soul. For us, warmer weather means barbecues and weekend get-togethers with friends. But, before I feel comfortable inviting everyone over, my home needs some TLC. Perhaps yours does, too. At the top of my list are reorganizing, lawn maintenance, and a good deep cleaning of all my hard surfaces, including floors, counters, walkways, and decks. Enter the honey-do-list. Lucky for me, there is one chore on that list that John doesn’t mind tackling in our home. Guess which one! Seven years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried almost every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never looked the way he wanted them to look. The LAST thing he wanted to do when he got home was to help me scrub the kitchen floor. So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning

showers & glass doors

equipment, my husband fell in love with the equipment and the process immediately. He couldn’t wait to bring the equipment to Knoxville and tackle as many restaurant floors as he could manage. That first week we practiced using the equipment in our own home, and I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they were equally impressed! Here’s some of what I have learned during the past seven years. Every now and then, every home needs a deep cleaning – a time to clean places that aren’t part of a regular cleaning schedule or places that are generally overlooked. I’ve also learned that no matter how often a home is cleaned and the floors scrubbed, that dirt and contaminants build up over time, which cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. This dirt becomes trapped within the pores of the floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures and professional help.

Timeless Home Design, the Key to Not Becoming a Trend THE INTERIOR design

industry and media all tell us what we are supposed to feature in our homes. Not only do they dictate what we should include, but also what color it should be, the manufacturer, how much we should spend, etc. This could very well be the best definition of the word trend. If it’s too colorful or too personal, then it’s a design no-no. And they go on to suggest that if you deviate from the latest trend, you could you impair the value of your investment or even risk being out of style. Question: Do we always follow the latest trends? Answer: No. There are many factors to consider when we ask ourselves what trends we should follow. First and foremost, good design is good design in any color. If you aren’t planning on selling your home in the short term, the big question isn’t whether it meets the latest mainstream, spoon fed design ideas, but whether it works for you and your lifestyle and your budget. Also, remember that current trends aren’t necessarily what maintains your home’s market value. Remember that today’s trends will be out of vogue tomorrow if the interior design industry is to prosper. Just thumb through some past issues of different designer magazines. These publications continue to push the design envelope further each issue in large part to sell magazines. If every issue of Better Homes and Gardens featured a kitchen with cherry cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and granite counter tops, we’d lose interest. As a result, homeowners find themselves on an unending remodeling/updating merry-go-round - all because the mainstream design industry and media said “do it or lose value in your home.” Using words like “dated,” “undesirable,” and “too personal” made many of us scurry to building showrooms to purchase the latest trends - you know, the same thing everyone else was buying. The end result was a beautiful kitchen that’s very popular and very common. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as an updated kitchen is a very desirable. It’s abandoning our individuality that is sad. So how do we successfully combine today’s updates with our own unique style that reflects our personalities and come out winning? Consider what gets noticed. Look through home design magazines. What you should look for are designs where homeowners went their own way by combining good design with

individuality, avoiding the trends. The results are beautiful, personal, and unique designs. The idea is to create a home that has timeless style. Timeless style has very little to do with trends. Discovering a timeless design is a road less traveled. It requires research, patience, and definitely a good, creative eye. It is a design aesthetic that reaches back in the past, and far into the future, with its visual appeal and practicality still intact throughout the ages. It’s good quality, outlives trends, and ultimately holds the best value long term. Builder Jenny Blalock’s specialty is helping you make your dream home a reality. Any custom built home should be a

Decorating with Mirrors WALL MIRRORS are simply the most ele-

gant, useful, and underappreciated decorating element in our homes. Most people use a mirror every day without considering its beauty or significance. A mirror is essentially neutral and neither traditional nor contemporary. Properly placed, a mirror will blend well with any interior. There are certain mirrors for certain spaces. In the public areas of one’s home, mirrors are about defining and decorating the interior instead of checking one’s reflection. In bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets, mirrors are a practical necessity. In a foyer, mirrors are useful for checking hair and makeup before leaving. Mirrors also have visual appeal. When deciding between hanging a mirror or a piece of wall art, choose the one that is most visually appealing. In some cases, a mirror just works better. With a beautiful frame, a mirror can be considered a piece of wall art. Furniture companies and interior designers are trending towards utilizing mirrors to fill wall space. Mirrors with decorative frames are affordable, look great, function as wall art, and will most likely last longer than most furniture pieces. Helpful suggestions: » When hanging a mirror, consider the height. Which is critical for getting the best reflection? For example, when positioning a mirror above a mantle, it may be too high to see yourself or the room in the reflection. If it’s too high or tall, the reflection may be of the ceiling. Mirrors with wider frames and beveled edges work very well at higher levels, especially when the reflection is not as important. » Mirrors work best for making ourselves more beautiful or attractive and reflecting light, so try placing one near a window or lamp. » Check what will be reflected in the mirror by positioning yourself where it’s going to be placed, looking at the opposite view towards the room to determine what will be reflected. » Use a wall hanger or wall cleat to hang a mirror rather than a wire stretched across the back. The hanger will help keep it flat to the wall. Remember, mirrors are simply the most elegant, useful, and underappreciated decorating element. If you follow these recommendations, you will add beauty and significance into your home’s interior décor. If you would like more information about mirror products, design, or need assistance, call Creative Reflections Inc. at 865-392-1515 or visit www.mirrorglassdesign.com.

May in the Garden S

PRING, SPRING,

glorious spring! The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, and life is good. May is the month when smart gardeners are finally free to give in to all those gardening impulses. You averted your eyes when neighbors planted things too early, chuckled silently if their plants died, and spent your gardening energy on containers and getting beds ready. Now it’s time to play in the dirt! Let’s get started on that to-do list: ›› I start with a caveat: Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor. I’ve seen frost as late as May 7, so don’t pack away all those sheets and blankets just yet. ›› You still have plenty of time to plant trees and shrubs, but you need to be prepared to water them. I know it’s been wet for months, but the rains tend to taper off after April, and what we do get in the summer tends to come as a torrent instead of a gentle soaker. One inch of rain per week is best. If you don’t have a rain gauge (or if yours is one of those cute but somewhat

useless ones), put a tuna or cat food can near your plants. If it doesn’t fill up by the end of the week, you need to drag out the hose. Notice I didn’t say run the sprinkler! Repeat after me: Sprinklers are for flowers and grass, hoses are for trees and shrubs. Drip irrigation is even better. ›› You can still sow seeds of fast growing summer annuals like sunflowers and vegetables such as squash and melons. ›› Our Monarch butterflies are in trouble. Populations are down as much as 90%. Plant butterfly weed, butterfly bush, and other butterfly plants in your yard to help stop the decline. ›› If your spring blooming trees and shrubs need shaping, now is the time to do that. They rest after the hard work of blooming, and then they start forming buds for next year. Pruning while they’re resting means you don’t remove next year’s flowers. Blasting shrubs that have finished blooming with a water hose will also

remove spent flowers that might hang around and become home to insects and fungus. ›› You can still remove any dead branches that didn’t survive the winter freezes. Take them all the way off using sharp pruners. Sealants aren’t necessary. ›› This is also a good time to shape up woody perennials like rosemary, lavender, and Artemesia. ›› If you still haven’t fertilized your trees and shrubs, there’s still time. Do you have to fertilize? No. Fertilizers are to plants as vitamins are to humans. If your plants are getting everything they need from their “diet,” then they don’t need supplements. If they seem to be struggling, a little organic boost won’t hurt. ›› Fungal spores are busily breeding in our warm, damp weather. Keep an eye on susceptible plants, and start treating as soon as you see a problem. ›› Insects are also busily breeding. Check your plants often so you can stop an insect outbreak before you’re infested. Remember to always start with the least toxic product first! ›› Stake tall perennials before they start flopping. You can buy supports and cages, or you can use bamboo or sticks. Old pantyhose make great plant ties if you cut them into strips. They are strong, but flexible. ›› Start deadheading perennials and annuals to continue your bloom season. It’s best to pinch/cut back to the next leaf so you don’t have ugly stalks sticking up. ›› Pinch back plants that tend to be leggy. Zinnias, coleus, salvia, and petunias will be bushier and have more blooms if you pinch the tops out regularly. Million bells and verbena may also need a trim. ›› Don’t cut back bulb foliage until it turns yellow. They have to store up energy for next year’s bloom. You can also divide bulbs after they yellow if they’re overcrowded. ›› Never stop weeding! If you do, then the alien weed monsters from the planets Green Onion, Chickweed, and Henbit will take over the earth! Seriously, one wild buttercup can cover 40 square feet in a year, so don’t ignore them. ›› Pay attention to your lawn mowers. Keep the blades sharp, and try to mow in different directions every time. ›› Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders full and birdbaths clean. Most birds are feeding hatchlings and appreciate the help. That’s all for this month. Stop in and check us out frequently, because we’re getting trucks in daily this time of year. Now go on out and play in the dirt!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

C

CREEPING PHLOX

REEPING PHLOX is a gardening

favorite that many times gets overlooked, because some gardeners feel that it loses its appeal once it quits flowering. However, if these evergreen perennial creepers are cut back by half after they are done flowering, the remaining foliage will thicken into an almost impenetrable ground cover. Also, an occasional flower will pop up now and then over summer. Botanically known as Phlox subulata (and by many different common names such as creeping phlox, moss phlox, moss pink, or mountain phlox), this plant is native to the eastern and central United States and is widely cultivated. It is a durable perennial that plays well with other plants. It happily produces expanding growth that can be easily transplanted elsewhere, but if you choose to leave it be, it doesn’t crowd out its companions and just snuggles in around taller plants. Because it is such a durable and easily transplanted perennial, creeping phlox is regarded as an old-fashioned plant that is easily passed along from one generation to the next among families and friends. The small, five-petal flowers bloom in spring to early summer. It is a low plant, forming moss-like mats, with its flowers in clusters at stem ends. Collectively they form a continuous carpet of flowers. A wide array of flower colors are available ranging from white to every shade of pink and purple to almost red and even salmon, and thanks to plant breeders, the color palette continues to grow. You’ll also find striped, bi-colored selections, and plants with a dark center or “eye.” The evergreen foliage is narrow, short, and stiff. Darker-flowered forms have very dark-green leaves or red-tinged leaves that darken to burgundy in winter. When I was new to gardening and couldn’t get my beautiful creeping phlox to reseed and beget new plants, I complained to a seasoned gardener who asked if I walk on my plants. My horrified response was “goodness no!” He assured me that was my problem. He said the new seed needed to come in contact with the soil and walking on the plant as the seed ripened allows for this to happen. Yep, that worked. An alternate plan is deadheading. Because I have more than 40 beds of plants and can’t give them a lot of individual care, I use the weed whacker on them, which works very well. Although I’m not gaining new plants by reseeding, the remaining plants continue to Photo by C. Burdett

expand. Since they do not die back in winter, there’s no hurry to relocate excess growth. I generally enjoy that process on our occasional warm winter days. Creeping phlox is best grown in a welldrained soil. Plants grow well in sandy or gravely soils and tolerate hot, dry exposures better than most other species of phlox. It flowers best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Plants will self-seed in optimum growing conditions. As mentioned, cut back the stems after flowering by half to maintain form and promote denser growth plus to stimulate a possible light re-bloom. Growing just four to six inches tall, with plants slowly spreading to 24 inches wide, creeping phlox makes a great plant to use in the foreground of a landscaped bed. Being a die-hard plant tolerating drought and sun, it’s also a great rock garden or xeriscape plant. An extra bonus is that creeping phlox is deer resistant and is a trouble-free plant when it comes to garden pests. Carol Burdett is a Master Gardener with the Cumberland County Master Gardener Association. The Tennessee Master Gardener Program is a volunteer service program that trains and certifies volunteers in the science of horticulture and gardening. Harriet The Spy at Knoxville Children’s Theatre

K

NOXVILLE CHILDREN’S T H E AT R E will present Har-

riet The Spy, a stage adaptation by Leslie Brody of the classic novel by Louise Fitzhugh. The play will be performed May 1-17, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 1 and 5 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Harriet loves writing and wants to be a spy when she grows up. So what could be more natural for Harriet than keeping a journal? A journal that contains everything she thinks about or observes in all of her friends and family. A journal that is the complete, uncensored truth. But Harriet will need all her super-spy techniques when the notebook goes missing. What if everything she wrote about her friends is made public? The comic fallout that ensues will delight audiences and teach some valuable lessons. Harriet The Spy has been recognized as a literary classic with a modern sensibility. In 2002, the School Library Association ranked the book 17th in a list of “Top 100 Children’s Novels.” The novel won the Sequoyah Book Award for 1964.

Knoxville Children’s Theatre is East Tennessee’s leading producer of stage plays for children. Harriet The Spy is the 67th play to be produced by KCT. The company is also the area’s leading producer of new works, having produced 27 original plays since 2008. More than 9,500 people attended a KCT play in 2014. The play is performed by 21 talented young actors from ages 9 to 15. Harriet Welsch is portrayed by KCT veteran Campbell Ella. Clare Carter will perform the role of Harriet’s nanny, “Ole Golly.” Betsy Blumberg plays the Cook, Harriet’s nemesis at home. Lauren Rymer will portray Harriet’s enemy at school, Marion Hawthorne. Three actors are making their KCT debut: Josephine Crawford, Maria Kauffman, and Quintin Rhodes. The rest of the cast includes KCT veteran performers

Michael Blevins, Ava Bradshaw, Naama Friedman, Max Harper, Anna Heneise, Anna Keim, Lisette Paultre, Madelyn Payne, Lydia Pulsinelli, Emma Stark, Grant Trivette, Derrick Washington, Jr., Ani Werderitch, and Ella Williams. The play is directed by Zack Allen, KCT’s Producing Director. The stage manager is Kayla June Nobbe, an eighth-grader at Holston Middle. Rita Anderson and Caroline Dyer will provide the costumes. Harriet The Spy is adapted by Leslie Brody. The play is produced through special arrangement with Plays For Young Audiences and The Gersh Agency. Knoxville Children’s Theatre is located at 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville. For more information, call 865-208-3677 or visit www.knoxvillechildrenstheatre.com.

Five Great Reasons to Install Retractable Screens on Your Home This Spring

istoric Ramsey House, located at 2614 Thorn Grove Pike, is hosting its second season of Vintage Baseball. The next game will take place on May 16, starting at noon. “This year we have the honor of hosting two home teams,” said Judy LaRose, Executive Director. “The Knoxville Holstons will be back for their second season, and we are pleased to have Emmett Machinists joining our family. The addition of a second team brings twice the family fun to this great event. The names of both teams were actual teams that played in the 1864 era in Knoxville.” The Holstons will play the Chattanooga Lightfoot, while Emmett Machinists will take on the Highland

Rim Distillers. All teams are in period uniforms and play by 1864 period rules. There is no admission to the games. Hotdogs, popcorn, peanuts, and beverages will be available for purchase. To make it a complete “back-intime” experience, you can ride to the game with players just as they traveled to their games – by train. You can catch your ride at the Three Rivers Rambler Depot in University Commons and be entertained by some of the players as they share history and stories of their favorite past time. Three River’s Rambler is also providing activities for the kids. For more information on the train rides to the game, contact the Three River’s Rambler at 865-534-9411.

1. Let in fresh air and keep out insects. As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more time on our patios and porches. Yet with warm weather comes bugs, making it often difficult to stay outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens on your home allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a retractable screen solution that fits your needs. 2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you to enjoy uninterrupted views when the screens are retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about bugs. Large motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort. They can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. 3. Preserve the look and design of your doorway. Homeowners are throwing out the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. Retractable door screens provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly results of conventional door screens, making it a perfect addition for any home. 4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens are the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s fully retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or fully retract the screens to gain the maximum warming effects of the sun in the cooler months. 5. Enjoy the convenience of a professional installation. Homeowners often struggle to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of the openings they want to screen. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if looking for recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs. To discover all the possibilities retractable screens can offer you and your family, contact me today.

BY TODD MORGAN, DIRECTOR OF FIELD SERVICES FOR KNOX HERITAGE/ETPA

East Tennessee’s

Endangered Places E ACH

Y E A R the East Te n n e s s e e P r e s e r v a t i o n Alliance (ETPA) presents a list of endangered heritage sites in our region. These buildings are irreplaceable assets to both their communities and our region, and their preservation matters for many reasons. 2015 marks our sixth year for highlighting endangered historic places, some of which are now no longer endangered. The Alexander Inn/Guest House in Oak Ridge will reopen as an assisted living center this spring. The Oak Grove School, located in Union County’s Sharp’s Chapel, has brought community volunteers together to restore the two-room schoolhouse built in the early 1930s. The National Trust and others have donated paint, the windows have been restored, and many volunteers have been working on the foundation, roof, and floors. In Lafollette, the city has purchased the old 1939 Post Office downtown, and it is currently being used as an exhibit space. Still, there is much to do. We are always keeping an eye out for threats to old country stores, abandoned schoolhouses, neglected cemeteries, downtown commercial buildings, significant homes, and our beautiful East Tennessee landscapes. This year we want to draw everyone’s attention to eight very important properties. Some are on the verge of being great success stories. Others face a more uncertain future. All are worthy of being saved! The Stonecipher-Kelly House in Morgan County was built around 1814 by Ezra Stonecipher, one of the earliest settlers in that area. The saddlebag-style home is unusual for the region, and the house retains most of its original, character-defining, architectural features. In 2013, the house and property was acquired by Frozen Head State Park. Now the challenge is to clean up and repair the house and define how it will become part of the park experience. The Tanner Cultural Center in Newport was built in 1924 with financial support from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, which helped fund hundreds of African American schools across the country, The Tanner School is

58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2015

one of only a handful of such schools in East Tennessee. Now known as the Tanner Cultural Center, the building received significant damage from a tornado in 2011. The City of Newport owns the structure, and the Tanner Preservation Alliance was established in 2012 to oversee the restoration and long-term preservation of the building. They continue to seek funding for doing so. Morristown College was founded in 1881 on the site of a former slave market and became a secondary school where freed men were taught. Today the 51-acre campus is still recognized as a National Register Historic District. However, fires have destroyed some of the most significant buildings on campus, and extensive vandalism has wrecked the others. In 2014, the property transitioned to new ownership. Plans to redevelop the site must do so in a sensitive manner while telling the story of the college to future generations. The Historic Dandridge School was built in 1927 by noted architects Barber McMurry. The school building is currently for sale, and time is of the essence to find a new owner with the vision and resources needed to adaptively reuse this property. The building is a prime candidate for historic rehabilitation tax credits. Brushy Mountain State Correctional Complex in Morgan County began in 1894 after the state acquired more than 9,000 acres for the construction of the remote prison. Throughout the years, it became famous for the 1977 James Earl Ray escape and has been featured in both songs and fiction. In 2014, the Morgan County Economic Development Board gained control of the complex, and they are currently working with a private entity on developing a heritage tourism site that tells the story of Brushy Mountain while also utilizing its stunning geographic location. The Roper Tavern in Dandridge is an excellent example of the many taverns that once lined the old stage road between Knoxville and Abingdon, Virginia. It was built about 1817 by John Roper who served in the War of 1812 and later became a well-known Dandridge merchant and bank president. The building continues to suffer from signs

of moisture damage, as well as a general lack of maintenance. A new owner is being sought who can do proper maintenance and bring it back into a stable condition. The Former Tennessee Military Institute located near Sweetwater was first established as the Sweetwater Military Academy in 1874. The 144-acre campus includes 10 buildings, with the main and most iconic building dating back to 1910. TMI closed in 1988 and was sold to Meiji Gakuin University, which operated the campus as a school for Japanese high school students. After the school closed in 2007, the property suffered from ownership battles. That dispute has been settled, but there are maintenance issues that need to be addressed, as well as development of a longterm vision for the site. Magnet Mills in Clinton first opened its doors in 1906 operating as a hosiery mill, and by 1930, it employed more than 1,000 people. In 1967, a prolonged strike resulted in a decision to close the mill. In 2008, a development group presented plans to redevelop the site, including retail, restaurants, commercial properties, and condos, but the plans were adjusted when the economy took a downturn. Some of the property has since been demolished, but there is a new effort underway to find a buyer/developer who can successfully transform this site. Find out more about these endangered properties and how to help at www. knoxheritage.org/ETPA.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. ETPA is a regional historic preservation organization that partners with Knox Heritage to serve a 16 county region. W

ITH THEIR incredible restau-

rants seemingly appearing overnight, cities such as Brooklyn and Portland have long since been discovered as foodie destinations. If you want coal-fired pizza ovens, craft beer, or artisan doughnuts, you only have to stroll down the street a few blocks. But while these destinations have been basking in the limelight, other cities across America have been transforming their food scenes to much less fanfare. If you’re searching for the mod craft cocktail bar, the boat-to-table seafood, or the next big thing in fusion cuisine, then pick up a fork in these cities: Providence, Rhode Island. No one is sure who coined the phrase “boat-to-table,” but Providence does it right. Many up-andcoming restaurants have fish delivered daily from the docks to their tables. If you are looking for an exquisite creation with Italian, Portuguese, or simply New England roots, Providence will serve you up in style. Save a special corner of your stomach for Providence’s fabulous hole-in-the-wall cafés and tucked away bars. In discrete, sometimes rough-around-the-edges locations, you’ll find the burgers, pizza, and beer that sustains locals whether they are out sunning on the patio or hunkered down for a gale. And, while it makes some people shudder, you can’t leave town until you sample the residents’ take on pizza – it’s grilled, not baked. Minneapolis, Minnesota. Better known for hot dish and General Mills products, the Mill City actually has a lot of new food going for it. Sure you’ll find things like artisan SPAM bites tucked onto menus, but you’ll also be able to sample fresh grilled walleye pulled from a lake near you, delicious Minnesota-grown produce, wood-fired pizza, local craft beer, and mouth-watering French pastries. Food trucks have also taken the city by storm with everything from burritos to lobster rolls. If you are looking for Asian and Southeast Asian 60

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2015

cuisine in particular, neighboring St. Paul has an enormous collection of authentic, inexpensive, and just plain delicious familyrun restaurants. Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe doesn’t have the big-name restaurants, but that suits the locals just fine. Santa Fe has always been known for its homey and rich southwestern cuisine, which you can still enjoy in abundance. When you are being served, waiters will ask whether you want red, green, or Christmas, referring to the color of the chili sauce you want placed on your order. However, many new restaurants are subverting these old favorites to make them lighter and airier. Instead of heavy sauces, you’ll find cuisine being served with delicate infusions of southwestern flavor. Many chefs are blending the flavors they’ve grown up on with influences from Mexico, France, and the Mediterranean. The result is a delicious collection of Southwest fare prepared in new and innovative ways. Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis is legendary for its barbecue, which you can enjoy everywhere from honky-tonks to famous restaurants. With an exquisite plate of ribs before you, you may be tempted to look no further, but Memphis also has an amazing collection of up-and-coming restaurants that showcase some of the South’s other best food traditions. Be sure to try New Orleansstyle redfish, succulent Lowcountry shrimp and grits, and delicious servings of hominy, succotash, and other Southern favorites. Las Vegas, Nevada. While everyone was busy gambling away the 1990s and early 2000s, Las Vegas was slowly developing a chef-driven food scene. If you don’t mind paying top dollar, you can have an incredible meal in Vegas. Fresh seafood, premier sushi, heritage meats, and caviar – it can all be found here. But be warned, Las Vegas does have a dearth of neighborhood restaurants, farm-totable operations, and farmers’ markets. Savannah, Georgia. Savannah is rightly famed for its coastal fine dining, so be sure

to sample scallops, crabs, shrimp, and redfish while you are in town. In Savannah, bounty from local producers is transformed to dishes served everywhere from your local neighborhood café to the up-and-coming downtown bistro. San Diego, California. Southern Cal’s foodie up-and-comer has the market cornered on amazing fish tacos. Set right against the Mexican border and the Pacific Ocean, inspiration flows both from the South and the sea. San Diego’s warm climate helps small farms thrive and you can be sure that restaurants are taking advantage of the locally sourced meat and produce that have become the mainstay of trendy new dining. Portland, Maine. Not to be confused with its western counterpart, Portland, Maine has a formidable food scene bolstered by its close proximity to fresh seafood and its long history of farm-to-table dining. Sample the town’s microbrews while exploring the cobblestone Old Port. Dig in to slow-foods movement creations and sample the Maine lobsters that encourage diners to return again and again to the seacoast. Durham, North Carolina. Southern Living called Durham the “South’s Tastiest Town,” so you’ve got to bring your appetite and check out the city’s new foodie appeal. Served to you in the city’s old tobacco warehouses or on roaming food carts you’ll find exquisite pies, fresh doughnuts, artisan coffee, and elevated casual fare that will make you never want to go back to your old greasy hamburger joint again. Traverse City, Michigan. Downtown Traverse City’s restaurant boom is in part due to the growth of local wineries. When you visit, you’ll have to divide your time between good food, wine, and the beach. What could be better? Like so many foodie areas, Traverse City takes it local. You’ll be dining on locally grown cherries and apples, foraged morel mushrooms, and fish pulled right from Lake Michigan.

Peace of Mind While You’re Away WHO’S CARING for your dog when

you’re out of town? With so many choices, interview and tour a minimum of three options. Speak with people you trust, and ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Meet the staff who will care for your dog and provide their daily routine. Investigate further if your pet has health requirements. If necessary, is the staff skilled in administering medications, including insulin injections? Can they detect issues of concern? What’s the cost for the extra care? Kennel owners/staff should have great relationships with the area veterinarians. JeanAnn Carrigan, owner of Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, stated, “Not being veterinarians ourselves, we are blessed with great relationships with the vets in our local area. We speak with many of them daily when obtaining vaccination records for our guests.” Of utmost importance is ensuring that you provide the kennel staff all necessary information to properly care for your pet. If Mallory vomits the first three days you’re gone due to separation anxiety, make that information known. If Tippie has worms and

is under treatment for a chronic noncontagious disease, inform the staff. If Rambo has a torn or ruptured cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) similar to the ACL in humans, the staff needs to know. Honesty and being upfront with kennel staff regarding your pet’s health issues is imperative to providing quality care during boarding, as surprises make it difficult to provide the care your pet deserves. The veterinarian is a vital part of the link between you and the kennel staff. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits requires owners to contact their vet, assuring the vet knows Fido is being boarded. Upon a reservation request, Ms. C’s staff will contact your veterinarian directly, requesting new vaccinations records. Going the extra mile in caring for your dog is a partnership between you, the owner, and the kennel staff, with honest, open communication the key, because your dog deserves the very best.

SEVIERVILLE’S 11TH ANNUAL

Bloomin’ Barbeque & Bluegrass will take place May 15-16. This family-friendly event will once again bring barbeque cook teams from all across the United States to Sevierville to compete for $17,500 in cash and prizes and the title of Tennessee State Champion in the Bush’s Best TN State Championship Cook Off. Rounding out the event is toe-tapping bluegrass music, incredible arts and crafts, kids’ games, and the Mountain Soul Vocal Competition honoring Sevierville’s favorite hometown girl, Dolly Parton. Take a little time to visit with the barbeque cook teams you’ve seen on cable channels like the Food Network as you stroll through the “Que Zone.” Then make sure you bring a lawn chair for the free bluegrass concerts with rising stars and legends of the bluegrass genre. On Saturday, the competition starts early. Watch as championship cook teams turn in their competition meats. Then stay for

the announcement of BBQ champs at 4 pm. During the competition, the teams will cook an estimated 2,832 pounds of meat, including 20 pounds of pulled pork, 24 pounds of brisket, five pounds of chicken, and 10 pounds of ribs each. Winning teams will receive recognition in Chicken, Ribs, Pork, and Brisket, as well as specialty categories like “Anything Bush Beans,” “Anything Swaggerty’s Farm Sausage,” Sauce, and Dessert. An expanded Kids’ Zone and the Bluegrass Music Tent add fun and enrichment for the kids and families who attend Bloomin’ Barbeque & Bluegrass. The Kids’ Zone includes attractions like climbing walls, bounce houses, and old-time toys, while the Bluegrass Music Tent gives kids (and kids at heart) the chance to touch and play bluegrass instruments such as banjos, fiddles, and more. (Don’t worry, instructors will be on-site to help.) Both of these attractions will be open until 9 pm each day of the event.

A highlight of Bloomin’ Barbeque & Bluegrass is the 11th Annual Mountain Soul Vocal Competition Finals held on May 16. Finalists from across the nation will sing their hearts out for a chance to win prize money, a recording session in Nashville, Tennessee, and a guitar autographed by Dolly Parton. This competition, the only one of its kind that festival organizers know of, honors the songwriting of Dolly Parton. Competitors, male and female, must sing a song written by Dolly Parton (there are more than 3,000) and do so in their own style (rock, rap, country, bluegrass, swing, soul, etc.). Admission and concerts are free thanks to great sponsors, including the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce, which encourages you to stay in Sevierville while visiting Bloomin’ Barbeque & Bluegrass. For great lodging deals and more information about Bloomin’ Barbeque & Bluegrass, call 888-889-7415 or visit www.BloominBBQ.com.

Lollypops at The Village Exchange, you are greeted with beautifully wrapped cello bags with brightly colored bows filled with traditional baby clothes and gifts, as well as unique toys perfectly prepared ready to take to a shower or party. While many of the items in the space are pre-wrapped, making your shopping experience as simple as possible, just as many items are unwrapped, which lets you be creative, as well and handpick your own favorite items. One favorite is the beautiful new line of sweet bonnets, bucket hats, swimsuits, and clothes by The Beaufort Bonnet Company. For Laura Forrester, owner of Lollypops, it was about finding the best work-life balance with her growing family that led her into the gift bag business and eventually landing at The Village Exchange. She was able to combine three of the things she loved into her new career: Her previous job in sales, her love for teaching kindergarten, and her new important role of being a mother.

After Laura’s first home show in which she made and sold Easter bags in 2014, she realized how great the response was and started to think about the big picture and how to grow her business. When seeing the potential for her growing business and her love for her new career, she decided to go all in. Although Laura decided not to return to her job as a teacher, it is important to her as a teacher and a mother that the items she sells in her store bring out children’s strengths, whether it be learning a new skill or allowing them an opportunity to be creative. One of her favorite aspects of her new career is the people she has met along the way and the new relationships she has formed. HEN IT comes to teaching middle

schoolers, Kami Lunsford has hit all the right notes. The chorus and general music teacher at Karns Middle School has been named the Middle School Teacher of the Year for Knox County Schools. “At first, I really couldn’t believe it, because frankly, I know we as teachers work so hard,” said Kami. “I’m not any different than any other teacher who works more than they’re paid for to see their work live on through our students. Then it hit me; I am where I am today because of my teachers, so this is more than an honor. Somebody sees the hard work we do.” Kami has been at Karns Middle since the fall of 2006 and has worked with a variety of fellow music teachers since then. “‘To whom much is given, much is required,’” quoted Kami. “I am who I am today because of teachers, especially my music teachers Mr. Randy Wilson, Mr. Cory Bridges, and Ms. Fay Adams. The gifts they gave me are responsible for everything I have – my career and way of 64

life, my opportunities and successes, and my life’s joy and purpose. I didn’t just learn music; I learned how to work hard, be a leader, and make a life for myself. Paying it forward has always been the goal.” Kami earned her degree in music education from the University of Tennessee School of Music. Before earning her degree, she studied privately with classical and jazz piano teachers and participated in band and chorus when she was in middle and high school. “I love the middle school grades,” said Kami. “I love making music with kids, and I love hearing kids make music on their own! I get to be with kids during a pretty crazy time in their lives and promote positive thinking through the fine arts. Because of this crazy time, no two days are alike, and I often get blessed with hilarious and memorable moments in my classroom.” Kami’s days are spent teaching music

in love with a gift they received from the shop… those relationships are what make doing what she does so much fun. The gifts you will find at Lollypops will not disappoint, and you can truly tell that Laura loves what she does from beginning to end. I love making music with kids, and I love hearing kids make music on their own!” classes, conducting rehearsals, helping students practice solos, and playing piano to accompany student choruses. She says the biggest challenge she faces is fitting it all in. “There really aren’t enough hours in the day for a teacher,” she said. “There is always work to be done, and there are always those who don’t think you do enough. This is especially true for those out there who don’t think the fine arts are important in the education of a child. Luckily, I work under the leadership of Brad Corum, where support and encouragement are part of who we are as a staff. We have great teachers there who all have a sense of responsibility toward our kids and not just test scores. I am very fortunate to be a part of a strong related arts staff, especially the other fine arts folks I work with closely on a daily basis.”

The Harder You Work, the Luckier You’ll Become

O

NE OF the advantages of having

been self-employed for more than 30 years is the accumulated experiences that you can draw on when making important decisions or when reacting to unforeseen challenges. Many of the decisions and challenges that occurred early in my entrepreneurial experience seemed very daunting. Today most appear trivial. But that’s the value of experience. One major disadvantage of my more than three decades of experience, however, is that it’s not always easy to relate with today’s new entrepreneurs. I guess what I recall most from my early self-employment experiences was the fear of failure. While there were numerous examples of those who had gone before me that had succeeded, like so many other new entrepreneurs, I often wondered if they were the exception, and if they were, what chance would I have? This led to the belief that success in

I can honestly say that the success in the small business marketplace during the last 33 years came almost entirely from offering customers a quality product and/or service and a great deal of hard work. business came largely from luck, a role of the dice. Today I understand that while there is a small degree of luck involved in success, it’s rarely enough to transform a failing business model into a successful one. I can honestly say that the success in the small business marketplace during the last 33 years came almost entirely from offering customers a quality product and/or service

and a great deal of hard work.. In fact, I cannot recall a single small business failure that resulted when these two components were present. Not a single one! If you’re one of those aspiring entrepreneurs who believe that success is entirely determined by luck, you would probably be best served by avoiding self-employment. If, on the other hand, you’re willing to accept my more than three decades of experience and my assurance that I have never witnessed a single small business failure where a quality product and/or service was combined with a lot of hard work, then I think you’re going to enjoy your small business experience and the success that will inevitably result. The harder you work, the luckier you’ll become.

Mentors: How to Make Them Matter!

H

E CALLED me “sport.” Why

I’ll never know. From day one, it was his pet name for me. He was my boss and a well-respected professional at the top of his field. As president of the bank, he was widely known around town and liked by seemingly everyone who knew him. It was my first real job. Disappointed I couldn’t go to college like many of my friends, work was my only option. On my own financially at a young age, adulthood surged upon me like a thief in the night. Suddenly the stark reality of bills and alarm clocks became my new norm. Thank God for that boss. He took me under his wing, encouraged me, and as a husband and the father of four daughters, set an example of family and how things can be when leaders lead. Where would we be without mentors? Along my journey, they have been imperative. Countless people who seemed insignificant at the time have played a vital role in my professional and personal development. Yes,

there have been those with a negative impact as well. Those are the ones who’ve stood tall in my memory as reminders of who I never want to become. From everyone, we learn something. Soon I’ll have coffee with another woman who has asked to introduce me to a high school student who would like to write for the Christian magazine we publish. She is having a difficult time fitting in as a student. Upon reading the request, loud bells went off in my mind. “A kid needs help! A friend of a friend is asking for help redirecting her life in a positive way.” Memories of years long ago suddenly seemed like yesterday. “Yes, I’d love to meet her.” My schedule, like yours, is busy, yet not too busy to hear in between the lines. This kid needs someone to believe in her, encourage her, and give her a chance to write. She needs new people in her life, and in an email, I’d gotten my invitation. I’ll thankfully go, recalling gratefully each one of those who came into mine. The role of mentoring others is critical. In a day when families seem fragmented and relationships often superficial, we

need meaningful relationships. Young or old, we long for authentic friendships where people care about how we are really doing – those who engage in conversations that are uninterrupted by phones or distracted eyes scanning the room for more “important” people to meet. That nickname “sport” meant the world to me, because I had my own identity to this important man others called “president.” He cared, and I knew it. Even today I easily recall the pivotal role he played in my life. We are all mentors. We influence others. Life is better when that is leveraged for the betterment of others, and in the end, we become stronger people with meaningful lives. That is how we truly “make it matter!” Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Follow her blog at http://bethtownsend.wordpress.com.

Family Life

Conversation Starters for Your Family

L

Once you start having conversations that don’t revolve around daily activities, you can begin to see sides of your loved ones that you may not have witnessed before.

IVING IN TODAY’S fast paced

world often means that meals are picked up through drive-thru windows and are eaten quickly so the family can move onto whatever is next on the day’s schedule. In days past, meal time was not just when the family would eat; it was a time for communication. It was where individuals in the family got to know each other better through sharing and conversation. While it may be impossible to have hourlong meals around a table due to time constraints, sharing and conversation is still important. It is how you learn about people on an individual basis and gain insight. As you are commuting, sitting and waiting at appointments, or enjoying a to-go meal, make time for meaningful conversation with your loved ones. Conversations should be about more than the day’s activities. They should be focused on learning about each other’s thoughts on a personal basis. If you can’t find anything to discuss, this list of conversation starters can get the ball rolling. The questions are fun, interesting, and can help you learn about the people in your family – no matter their age.

» If you could sit down and have a meal with any two people, who would you choose? » If you could not watch television or get on a computer for one year, how would you keep yourself entertained? » If you had to give up all your personal possessions (or toys) but could only keep one, which one would you pick? » If you were trapped inside a television show or a movie for one month, which one would it be? » What is the one event in history that you would pick to witness? » If you could have a super power, which one would you pick? » If you could only eat one food for a month, which food would you pick?

» If you had to be an animal, which animal would you be? » If you could be a famous person, who would you be? » What is your earliest memory? » If you could say one thing and everyone in the world could hear it, what would you say? » What is something that makes you proud of yourself? Once you start having conversations that don’t revolve around daily activities, you can begin to see sides of your loved ones that you may not have witnessed before. Whether questions are humorous, serious, or thoughtful, do not judge or criticize any answers you may hear. Passing judgment will only keep your family members from opening up about their thoughts and feelings. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Self-Control: An Etiquette Attribute

I

WOULD LIKE to discuss a skill that

all gentlemen and ladies should strive to possess: that of self-control. Selfcontrol is an attribute that requires one to consciously make an effort to be in control of one’s emotions, actions, and speech. We all know people who have little self-control. They are the ones who blow their tops rather quickly, get easily rattled, and put their foot in their mouth very often. I hope this isn’t us. When you consider that you want to raise your children believing that they are not a victim to circumstances or helpless to physical appetites or pleasures, you might want to examine if you live your own life in a way that exemplifies this belief system. Here are some self-checks to consider: » Do you find yourself often being blamed for other’s hurt feelings? If so, you might need to ask someone you trust, love, and 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2015

admire to be honest with you by asking, “Am I rude? Do I sound condescending or judgmental when I speak to others? If you were to advise me on one thing that you thought would help me if I changed in my conversation with others, what would it be?” Then, be courageous enough to hear and act and thank your friend who loves you. » Do you find yourself angry at least once per day? How about once per week? Either of these amounts is a sure sign that you are struggling with understanding and controlling your emotions. Studies show that people who get angry more often are more unhappy. You might be saying, “Duh!” However, here’s something to consider. You choose to be angry. No one forces you or I to ever become angry. It’s a choice, and when you choose it, you are choosing unhappiness. » Are you a slave to a bad habit? Do you

have to have an alcoholic drink each day to calm your nerves or relax yourself ? Do you have to have your coffee in the morning or you’ll have no way of being responsible for your grouchiness, sleepiness, or lack of focus? I could go on, but the simple truth is this. If you need outside unhealthy habits to keep you going, you are allowing something other than yourself to be in control of you. Choose to be an example that your children can look to in all things, even in self-control.
