L

AST MONTH was devoted

to honoring moms, and in June, we set aside a day to honor dads and all that they do for their families. My dad held a very special place in my heart, and although he has been gone for a number of years, he is still sorely missed. Photo by D. Roberts Photography As a youngster growing up, my dad was always there for both of his daughters. He would do anything for us, whether it was playing catch in the backyard after his hard day at work or playing a board game in the evening or just treating us to a day out in the park topped off with an ice cream sundae. My dad was the best. Later, when I was in school and needed help with my studies, dad would be there to quiz me in math and spelling. He always encouraged education, and I know he wanted both his daughters to go to college. It was a proud day when he saw me graduate.

The influence my dad had on me has helped me in school, at work, and in business. Dad was always organized and detail oriented. He wrote everything down on sticky notes. He did not leave anything to chance. Those qualities were carried on to his very last days, as he had sticky notes for us on how to handle all his final affairs down to the very music to play at his memorial service. I have come to appreciate his attention to detail, which has served me well in life, and I also don’t leave anything to chance. I do use a lot of sticky notes, too. My dad was my hero. He had integrity, loyalty, devotion, commitment, and he loved his family above anything else. So as you read our June cover feature on another special father/daughter relationship, take time to reflect on the influence your dad has had on your life. I hope it is as positive as mine. Happy Father’s Day!

Luxe Homes & Design

Dream Homes Designed and Created for Each Season of Your Life

I

N THIS ISSUE of Everything

Knoxville, we are excited to feature Luxe Homes & Design founder and president, Jenny Blalock. Jenny has successfully combined the entrepreneurial skills she developed early in her life while working alongside her father, Jim Blalock, in his plumbing supply business with both her skills as a general contractor and talents as an interior designer. A highly recognized and award-winning company, Luxe Homes & Design offers its clients a truly unique, one-of-a-kind experience in new home construction. They design and create a new home that not only meets the existing needs of each and every family member, but also the future needs of these same family members as they experience the changing seasons of their lives.

We will also introduce you to Plantation Reclaimed, a new company launched by Jenny dedicated to the preservation of our nation’s remaining old growth forests by promoting the environmentally responsible practice of recycling antique lumber that might otherwise have been discarded. In this interview, it is also hoped that in addition to introducing or reintroducing you, whichever the case, to Luxe Homes & Design and Plantation Reclaimed, that the entrepreneurial spirits that exist within so many of our readers might be reawakened by this interview. EK: To complete the narrative we began, please tell our readers about the very special father and daughter team that you have with your father, Jim, and how you benefitted

personally from working with him at an early age in his company. Jenny: I worked for my dad while attending the University of Tennessee. During those years, I watched how dad interacted with his employees and customers. He treated them all with great respect and always went out of his way to help any of them. It wasn’t just business with my dad; he took it personal. As a result of this, I also take pride in our work not only on a business level, but also a very personal level. EK: How do you feel that your clients benefit from your expertise as both a general contractor and interior designer? Jenny: I believe that it offers my clients a sense of comfort undertaking a project knowing that I possess the necessary skills and

experience required to guide them through the progress of designing a home that fits their unique lifestyle. Most homeowners need help combining all of their ideas and designs together, and as a design builder, I help them achieve the desired end result. EK: Why is it important to thoroughly understand a homeowner’s lifestyle prior to the design phase of new home construction? Jenny: This is one of the most important aspects to building a custom home. I make it a point to get to know my clients on a personal level to understand what things are important to them, what their lifestyle is, and what styles they like. This helps me design a home for them that is completely customized for them. EK: You encourage a homeowner to visualize not only how they plan to use their new home today, but also 10 or 20 years in the future. How does this benefit the homeowner? Jenny: Although trends and styles change throughout the years, I try to encourage my clients to incorporate designs that are more timeless. More importantly, you do need to build looking into the future as the family grows and as lifestyles change. Incorporating in-law suites is popular with many of my clients as they think about their parents getting older. One-story living is popular for all age groups as well. Also, building a home that requires less maintenance and is as energy efficient as possible is important for my clients as well. EK: Describe your hands-on approach to construction. Jenny: I’m very hands-on as all of my previous homeowners know. I’m not your typical “cell phone” contractor. Not only do I do all of the design work, but I am on the jobsite doing whatever it takes to keep the construction process going smoothly. I also build many of the kitchen hoods in my homes and install the custom clay tile backsplashes. I enjoy building unique features and incorporating them into each home. I feel that it’s a way of putting Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

a part of “me” into their home. Also, because communication is so very important, I try to be available as much possible for my clients. EK: Like so many of our readers who are considering building a new home, you share their cost-conscious approach, yet your homes include unique features often offered only as options elsewhere. How is that possible? Jenny: I think that is one of the things that make me unique. I think that is one of the qualities I’m known for. I want people to walk into one of our homes and think, “Wow, I’ve never seen that before, and I love it.” EK: Does Luxe Homes & Design also offer renovation or remodeling services? Jenny: New construction keeps our team quite busy, but if time permits, we occasionally take on remodeling projects for homeowners. EK: Tell us how Luxe Homes & Design gave rise to Plantation Reclaimed. Jenny: I have always loved to incorporate antiques or reclaimed materials into our homes. Several years ago I fell in love with reclaimed wood flooring. After extensive research, I found that the price for this type of flooring was beyond many of my clients’ budgets. But because of the growing popularity of this flooring, and because I actually love the process of reclaiming antique wood, we began milling it ourselves. Today we’re selling our reclaimed wood nationwide. I’m very proud of the success of Plantation Reclaimed and look forward to its continued success in the future. EK: Plantation Reclaimed actually harvests antique lumber as much as 200 years old, correct? Jenny: Yes, correct. Our barn wood comes from local barns, most with a history and story behind it. A lot of clients love to hear the story behind their floors. It’s exciting to see some old wood that you would normally strike a match to turn into such beautiful and unique flooring. I like to say it’s like reclaiming history one floor at time. EK: What type of projects has Plantation

Reclaimed been involved in recently? Jenny: We obviously incorporate our flooring into all our homes. We do not just mill reclaimed wood; we also offer an old growth series as well. We mill a lot of black walnut, hickory, oak, maple, etc. We have designers in L.A. that love using our original face barn siding. Our clientele list ranges from California to New York. The great thing about our product lines is that it can be used in both a rustic and even modern design. It’s very versatile. EK: Your websites are packed with useful information and galleries. What is the best way for our readers to reach you? Jenny: The best way to reach me is either by email or phone. I’ve discovered that most people prefer to email. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Perhaps a Father’s Day wish? Jenny: Yes, I would love to take the time to tell my dad how much I love and appreciate him. Not many people can say they can work with their parents or any family member for that matter and get along. The fact is we work very well together. He taught me at a young age to be independent and to work hard for things that I wanted. Being self-employed isn’t easy. It’s like being on a roller coaster at times, going through the good times as well as the bad. I’m just glad I’ve had the opportunity to experience all of it with him. I can’t imagine it any other way. Thank you for being supportive of me throughout the years, all your hard work, and your love for me, and here’s to many more years ahead. Happy Father’s Day!

Next To New Upscale Consignment, Amazing Values

T

ODAY’S ECONOMY and

the “new normal” in consumer shopping trends have given rise to the growing popularity of upscale women’s consignment shops. Not to be confused with clothing thrift stores, upscale women’s clothing shops serve two purposes: They represent a source of revenue for women to essentially recycle their gently worn quality clothing and accessories they may no longer wear, and for other women, they are a source of fashionable, high-quality women’s skirts, blouses, dresses, gowns, handbags, and jewelry at just a fraction of their original cost. A perfect example of one such shop is Next To New, located at 7212 Kingston Pike, next to Olive Garden and adjacent to The Bed Store. Next To New founder and owner, Jackie Bivens, always delights in the response that first-time visitors have to her shop. “If your passion for fashion outweighs your budget, we can help you to rebalance your

budget with Next To New’s higherend labels, in near new condition, for 50-85% off their original retail prices,” said Jackie. “It’s really the smartest way to shop and a smart way to make money on those unused designer-inspired fashions, jewelry, handbags, scarves, and shoes in your closet. With consignors such as Knoxville’s socialites literally emptying their closets, our merchandise is better than ever, including a fantastic selection in plus sizes. You will find a lot of undiscovered treasures at Next To New.” So whether you have some fashionable, gently worn, or never worn items just hanging around the closet that are looking for a new owner, or if you’re searching for that “just perfect” apparel item, jewelry piece, handbag, purse, or much more while keeping your budget intact, plan a visit to Next To New, the perfect location to find amazing items at truly

amazing prices. Also, plan on returning often, as new merchandise arrives daily.

REMEMBER learning in my high school

physics class about inertia – that an object at rest tends to stay at rest. It’s interesting to see how “financial inertia” plays out in people’s lives as well. Perhaps you are sitting in cash waiting for the perfect time to enter the market. A Blackrock study found that $100,000 fully invested in stocks representing the S&P 500 for a 20-year period ending in December 2014 would have grown to $654,055. By missing just five of the best performing days, that same $100,000 would have only grown to $433,895. That’s $220,000 less! Or perhaps you’ve never made that decision about long-term care planning, or updating your will, or changing your 401(k) investment mix in the last 10 years, or… well, you get the idea. Financial decisions are hard, and the fear of making a bad decision can hold you back from making any decision at all. But financial opportunities lost with the passing of time cannot be regained. In my practice, understanding my clients' emotional needs and potential barriers to implementing the plan is just as important as the actual creation of the plan. We spend time discussing what you need this money to do for you, what keeps you up at night, who else is depending on you, what is your history of financial decisions or indecision, and your level of financial knowledge and interest. Once we identify what you need from the money you have, the rest is easy. After all, it’s not my financial plan – it’s yours. If you’re ready to get off the fence, here’s your first action step: Decide whether you want to call our office for a one-hour complimentary meeting with me, or call our office to save a seat for you and a friend to join us at our lunch ‘n learn. Whichever you decide, I’ll show you how to structure your financial tasks into small, manageable steps and how to think through your financial behavior roadblocks and build in some fun rewards along the way. See? That wasn’t so hard! You’ve already broken the bonds of inertia and put yourself on the path to financial security. Well done!

She served in the US Army and attained the rank of captain. She is both a nurse injector and a trainer nationally for product manufacturers, teaching injection procedures, techniques, and theory to physicians and nurse practitioners. The nonsurgical injectable products Cynthia offers include: • Dysport® and Botox® • Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvéderm® XC • Sculptra • Restylane® Silk

the surgical and nonsurgical services offered by Dean Kleto, MD, and Cynthia St. Germain, BA, RN, BSN, described the procedures and their benefits, including the newest services – the Collagen P.I.N. (microneedling) therapy and the HydraFacial MD®, MD Tower skin treatments. They are particularly excited to add these latter two services to their procedure menu! This has and should provoke questions about 1.) Which of the services do I need? 2.) Why do I need them? 3.) How many sessions does each require? 4.) How often would I need to return? 5.) How much does it cost? Right? Dr. Kleto and Ms. St. Germain have always and continue to advise interested folks to start at the beginning, and that’s with a consultation. To generalize a treatment regimen in an article would be of little value to any one person, especially if there are particular challenges and expectations that need to be evaluated individually. That’s why you need to come in for a consultation. Dr. Kleto brings excellent training from Duke University and Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital to the surgical arena as he performs a variety of enhancing plastic surgery procedures at Parkwest and Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge hospitals. Ms. St. Germain has a highlydeveloped, astute aesthetic eye that, coupled with her knowledge and skill, brings a natural-looking result when she works with her patients. It can and has been said that both of these professionals have a passion for their work, as any artist has. So, in the end, the exploration begins with you. You must take the initiative for reaching out to find that enhanced, refreshed YOU. A free, no-obligation consultation for any of the non-surgical procedures can be scheduled by calling 865-394-4966. Clicking Nails DOGS

who spend a great deal of time outdoors running on various hard surfaces, including concrete and blacktop, gradually wear down their nails. Dogs confined indoors run mostly on soft surfaces where friction on their nails is absent. Long, unkempt nails not only look bad, but over time, they can do serious damage to your home’s floors and cause injury to your dog. They can tear or split, which is very painful, and excessively long nails can curve and grow into the pad of your dog’s foot. When nails get so long that they constantly touch the ground, they exert force back into the nail bed, creating pain for the dog (imagine wearing a shoe that’s too tight) and pressure on the toe joint. Compromising your dog’s weight distribution and natural alignment, with nails too long, can leave them more susceptible to

injuries, making walking and running difficult and painful. It’s critical to keep your dog’s nails at their proper length. When a dog is standing, the nails should not make contact with the ground. If you can hear your dog’s nails “clicking” on the floor, it’s definitely overdue for a pedicure. Depending on the rate at which the nail grows and surface on which the dog plays, grinding nails once a month is a reasonable interval for most dogs. Give John, Certified Groomer, a call at Ms. C’s. He will be happy to set up a regular nail maintenance program for you and your dog.

Business

Retirees Can Learn About Retirement from Peyton Manning AFTER 18 YEARS in the National Football

League, the Denver Broncos’ star quarterback, Peyton Manning, is calling it quits after a very successful career. We wish him well and hope that he’s made the preparations needed to enjoy a long, comfortable retirement. Here’s the advice we would give Peyton if he were our client and friend. 1. Don’t make any sudden decisions Many people who come from high-pressure, competitive jobs feel the urge to do something – anything – when they retire. You might be tempted to fill the void by rushing into a new business, partnership, or buying expensive toys or real estate. Don’t just yet. 2. Don’t jump into businesses or investments you don’t understand Think very carefully before you put your life savings into something you don’t completely understand, especially if the person asking is a friend or relative. You’ve worked hard to get where you are; don’t threaten it by taking too many risks now. 3. Work with a team of professionals You’re used to working with the best in your business. Expect the same from your financial team. Talk to a lot of professionals, and look for ones who want to get to know you and your dreams before making suggestions, answer your questions honestly, admit to uncertainty, and don’t make a lot of promises. 4. Have a strategy for retirement Think about the lifestyle you can afford in retirement and making sure your money lasts as long as you need it. Have a strategy for good and bad markets, and remember that long-term investors have to cultivate patience. How can we help? Retirement is a challenging transition, and it pays to get it right. We work closely with our clients long before and after retirement to understand their dreams and help create personalized retirement strategies that take them where they want to go. If you or someone you know have questions about retirement, give us a call.

Boil for 30 min and strain to remove the lemongrass stems. Add garlic, curry, red pepper flakes, leek, and onion. Let cook for 8 min. Add mushrooms, celery, cauliflower, peas, and coconut milk. The Coconut Connection

C

OCONUTS HAVE long been

revered in many cultures for their culinary tastes and healthful benefits. Studies have shown that even though coconut oil contains saturated fat, its medium chain fatty acid has heart health benefits quite unlike saturated fats that consist mainly of long chain fatty acids. From coconut oil, coconut vinegar, coconut sugar, coconut aminos, and coconut water, getting the most out of coconuts makes sense when all the benefits are known. As the summer approaches, we can already see rising temperatures generate the potential for dehydration. Drinking half your weight in ounces daily can guard against it. Coconut water is a refreshing drink that has a cooling effect on the body. Although there have been claims that coconut water is a source of much needed minerals, there is a relatively small amount of minerals contained in this drink. Still, occasionally drinking this liquid adds refreshing variety and a slightly sweet taste, making it delightful for hot summer days. Coconut oil is the mainstay in most Pacific Island diets. Research shows that 60% of Pacific Islanders’ fat intake comes from coconut oil, and yet there are low rates of cardiovascular problems. Capric acid and lauric acid are fatty acids that are found in coconuts. Research has shown that coconut fat can help balance body lipids and improve

anti-inflammatory immune response. It could also guard against liver damage due to alcohol. Coconut oil is a great addition to any kitchen. It can take high heat and does not become a trans fat, which is what most oils become when heated to high temperatures. Coconut oil can be used in baking, frying, sautéing, and can even serve as a good base for making chocolate delights. Other coconut products such as vinegars, sweeteners, and aminos, which are very similar to Liquid Aminos, can be used in salads, sautés, dressings, and other culinary creations. As with all foods, moderation and variety are key, but certain oils are clearly more healthful than others. Avocado oil and olive oil are examples of good oils. Both contain a monounsaturated fat, which is a “good” fat that helps lower bad cholesterol, as long as they are eaten in moderation. Avocados contain potassium and are a good source of fiber and vitamins B, C, and E. Olive oil is high in antioxidants, as well as vitamins E and K. Managing your daily fare is one of the most important things that you can do for your health along with hydrating, exercising, getting plenty of sleep, and relaxing. Quality of food is vital. Not all oils are created equally. Preferably, they should be cold pressed and organic. Variety in cooking is beneficial, and including coconut is a healthy way to get it. It really is time to get the coconut connection.

Jazz Up Your Summer Dishes with Essential Oils S

UMMERTIME IS the perfect

time to experiment with essential oils. There are many essential oils that can add that something special to your summer dishes. Essential oils can be added to teas and beverages as well. So what are some essential oils you can cook with? Here’s a good start: Basil, Lemon, Dill, Cumin, Cilantro, Wild Orange, Lime, Cinnamon, Clove, Ginger, Peppermint, Rosemary, Cardamom, Black Pepper, Marjoram, Lemongrass, Oregano, Cassia, Thyme, and Spearmint. Did you know that you can make your own olive oils infused with your favorite essential oils? Yes, you can. For instance, take Basil and Lemon. They can be added to your favorite olive oil together or separately. Keep in mind that essential oils are much more potent than fresh herbs, so a little goes a long way. Usually one to two drops or just a touch on a toothpick swirled into your recipe is all you need. You

should employ the toothpick method first if you are new to essential oils or have never cooked with them before. Here are three of our favorite recipes: Lemon Basil Pesto » 3 cups basil leaves, loosely packed » 3 small cloves garlic » 1/2 cup pine nuts » 3/4 cup olive oil » 1 toothpick dip Black Pepper essential oil » 1 toothpick dip Basil essential oil » 1 toothpick dip Lemon essential oil » 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese Combine all in food processor and chop until desired consistency. Eat and enjoy! All Spice Marinade » 2/3 cup beef broth » 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar » 2 cloves garlic, crushed » 1 small onion » 1 drop Clove essential oil

Create Summer Vacation Memories at Biltmore

GEORGE AND EDITH

Vanderbilt encouraged their guests to explore the rolling hillsides, manicured gardens, and verdant forests surrounding Biltmore House, especially in summertime. Thanks to careful preservation, guests today may experience the estate much as the Vanderbilts and their friends did 100 years ago. Summer at Biltmore runs now through September 5th. In addition to hikes and strolls, guests may ride horses along trails with views of Biltmore House. More modern modes are available for exploration at Biltmore’s Outdoor Adventure Center, which serves as the jumping-off point for guests interested in Segway tours, bike rentals, stand-up paddle boarding, rafting, and kayaking. Land Rover off-road driving experiences are available, as are fly-fishing and sporting clays instruction.

Glorious garden strolls

No visit is complete without time spent in the gardens. Biltmore’s formal gardens offer guests varied scenery and places to stop and reflect. Garden lovers can lose themselves 20

along meandering paths that lead down a gentle hillside to the Bass Pond. Along the way, stop to say hello to the koi and goldfish that call the Italian Garden’s three pools home, marvel at the size of the elephant ears and tropical foliage plants that grow in the borders of the Walled Garden, and take in the heady scent of the historic rose garden.

Music in the evenings

Antler Hill Village & Winery comes alive in the summer, especially on weekend evenings for Live After Five. Live music on the Village Green features jazz and pop, the Grape Stomp, and casual food, including cookout favorites. Select nights will bring stars to the South Terrace with the Biltmore Concert Series.

Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film

This is the last opportunity to see the Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film exhibition, which ends July 4. Awardwinning wedding dresses and costumes are showcased in Biltmore House, accented with elaborate floral displays. The exhibition

continues in Antler Hill Village with a focus on the weddings of Biltmore founder George Vanderbilt and his descendants. It includes the first-ever display of the Lee family wedding veil worn by Mary Lee Ryan at her marriage to Vanderbilt’s grandson in 1957, which was also worn by her cousin Jacqueline Lee Bouvier at her 1953 marriage to future President John F. Kennedy. Another highlight is the re-creation of Cornelia Vanderbilt’s beautiful 1924 wedding gown and veil by renowned costume designers Cosprop Ltd., London.

FTER NEARLY two decades and more than 3,000 live shows, Gaelic Storm – the chart-topping, multi-national Celtic band – is looking sharper than ever with their latest release, “Matching Sweaters.” The new album mixes traditional Irish music with modern influences, creating a sound that’s as wide-ranging as the band’s own audience. From bluegrass fans and country cowboys to Deadheads, rock & rollers, and Celtic fanatics, Gaelic Storm has built one of the most diverse fan bases in modern music. “Matching Sweaters” helps explain the broad appeal. Rooted in the songwrit-

ing of founding members Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, the album moves from drinking songs (“Another Stupid Drinking Song”), to energetic instrumentals (“The Narwhaling Cheesehead”), to rootsy pop/ rockers (“Whiskeyed Up and Womaned Out”), gluing everything together with the spark and spirit of a band that’s spent close to 20 years on the road. “We’re a touring band,” says percussionist Ryan Lacey, who joined the lineup in 2003. “That’s how this band works. ‘Matching Sweaters’ is one of the most complete albums we’ve done so far, because it taps into every facet of our live show.”

AROLYN MACKLEM , who also

goes by the name Sam, retired from her career in the non-profit management world when she and her husband relocated from Wisconsin to Tennessee almost five years ago. They discovered the ideal home nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, where he could pursue his black powder gun building hobby and she could follow her passion in beading. Sam began beading 20 years ago when she embellished a buckskin skirt and tunic for use in historical reenactments. Soon after that she attended one of the first Bead & Button shows in Milwaukee, where she became fascinated with the many forms of beading, including weaving, stringing, and embroidery. Her journey into beading and designing beaded jewelry had begun. Sam continued to enhance her beading skills by taking classes with international beading instructors, tutorial checking for an international Tennessee bead weaving designer, and experimenting with all shapes, sizes, and colors of beads in her bead studio. Sam’s goal is to bead jewelry that she wants to wear, as well as for women who, like herself, want jewelry that expresses their personality and individuality. If you would like to learn more about Sam and her work, or if you are searching for inspiration for your own beading hobby, you are encouraged to visit Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater, where the work of local and regional artists and artisans is featured. Gallery on Main also hosts a variety of art classes and art exhibits throughout the year that have created considerable interest among attendees.

Summer 2016: A Transformative Canvas of Color!

C

O LORS THIS SEASON trans-

port us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves. Influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening, and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, designers this season have gravitated toward a palette that is first and foremost calming. The soothing, calming colors are led by ROSE QUARTZ, a persuasive yet gentle tone that reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months. We’ve been in love with orange for several seasons. Coming to the front this summer is PEACH ECHE, echoing warmth and accessibility. Like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing respite even in troubled times.

SNORKEL BLUE plays in the navy family but with a happier, more energetic context! While the majority of the spring/summer palette trends towards calmness, BUTTERCUP reveals a shining beacon transporting the wearer to a happier place. A shade of aqua that leans toward the green family, SHELL is suggestive of clarity and freshness, evoking mindful tranquility. As in every season, the need for neutrals arises; a soft LILAC GRAY adds a distinctive edge to the classic grays of the past season.

High-energy FIESTA is strong and fiery… a yellow-based red providing a sharp contrast to the softer side of this season’s palette. Fi n a l l y, t h e r e ’s G R E E N FLASH radiating an openness that combines with the rest of the palette in unexpected ways. Try it with coral or aqua for a punch! If you haven’t visited The Lily Pad this season, we invite you to experience the vivid brights of summer now available. A fun and colorful season… summer 2016!

recorded musical performances and for his achievements on screens large and small, as well as on the Broadway stage, Harry Connick, Jr. has exemplified excellence in every aspect of the entertainment world. The foundation of Connick’s art is the music of his native New Orleans, where he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at the age of five. His career took off when he signed with Columbia Records at 18 years old and revealed his stunning piano technique and vivid musical imagination on his self-titled debut album. His follow-up album, “20,” announced that Connick was equally gifted as a singer. But this was soon overshadowed by his multi-platinum success with the soundtrack for the hit comedy “When Harry Met Sally...” To date, Connick has released 30 albums, won three Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards, and garnered sales of more than 28 million. His most recent CD release, “That Would Be Me,” features all new songs. In addition to his music career, Connick has also appeared on the screen and stage as an actor. Among his feature film credits are “Little

Man Tate,” “Copycat,” “Hope Floats,” “Memphis Belle,” “Independence Day,” “Life Without Dick,” “Mickey,” “Basic,” “P.S. I Love You,” “New in Town,” “Dolphin Tale,” and “Dolphin Tale 2.” His voiceover skills were featured in “My Dog Skip” and “The Iron Giant.” On television, Connick is perhaps best known for his recurring role on “Will & Grace.” He also appeared in an arc of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and has graced audiences with his musical talents in several primetime specials, including “Harry for the Holidays,” the animated tale “The Happy Elf,” and the Emmy Award-winning PBS specials “Only You in Concert” and “Harry Connick, Jr. in Concert on Broadway.” In the fall of 2016, Connick will debut his own nationally syndicated daytime show “Harry.” “Harry” will bring the party to daytime, entertaining viewers with a live band and delivering laughter through a variety of comedic segments, hilarious man-on-the-street interviews, live musical performances, parodies, audience participation, and plenty more surprises. ITH ITS FABULOUS reputa-

tion as a place for women to relax and rejuvenate, West Knoxville’s Spa 9700 often gets overlooked as a day spa that is also very popular with men. Indeed, Spa 9700 is a place where anyone, man or woman, can feel comfortable, but with Father’s Day coming soon, let’s talk about him. Rather than a hair salon that also has spa services, Spa 9700 offers an environment where men can comfortably and privately enjoy relaxing and therapeutic treatments. The high energy, sounds, and smells of the typical hair salon have been eliminated. Among the services that appeal to men are an array of gentlemen’s facials, including sport, antiaging, sun damage repair, and back facials. Waxing, especially in the summer, is also very popular with male clients. Men also enjoy special treatment for their hands, feet, and nails. That’s right men – hand, feet, and nail treatment. But not to worry, the treatment is done in a private men’s nail room where you can sit and relax while getting a nail service. And let’s not forget every man’s favorite: Massage. Spa 9700 specializes in custom full or upper body massage. There is no better stress reducer than a Swedish relaxation massage, and for a treat he won’t forget, indulge him with the hot stone massage. The spa also has a custom built hydrotherapy shower, which a lot of men enjoy. The 12-minute Hydrotherapy Shower Massage has 12 body jets, an overhead rain shower and cold water douse, and it puts forth 100 gallons of water per minute, creating a wonderful pre-treatment relaxation therapy. There are great options in the retail shop too such as Jack Black skincare and body care, lavender neck wraps, shea butter bar soaps, masculine scented candles, and more. Also, wait until you see the selection of sunscreens guaranteed not to wreck his golf game or fishing trip. So shop Spa 9700 for the special, deserving man in your life this Father’s Day. He will love it!

The Town Framery & Gifts Spotlight on Fine Art Crafts

THE TOWN FRAMERY & GIFTS

is a proud supporter of local artists and crafters. All the paintings, pottery, woodwork, jewelry, and other fine art crafts shown are from artists and crafters from Tennessee and around the South. Janet Brudecki is just one of the potters that can be found at the shop. Janet’s pottery includes a variety of different pieces that are functional and decorative. Her whimsical birds and snails are perfect for home décor and great gifts. Janet has fun and unconventional yarn bowls, which are perfect for those who knit and crochet. Everyday use pieces include richly colored bowls, serving dishes, plates, and jars. Janet uses slab work and wheel work in her pottery process along with details that are made by hand for most of her pieces. Each piece, such as the faces on the yarn bowls and the decorative edges of plates, will have some element of handcrafted parts. Her birds are entirely handmade using a raku pottery firing instead of a traditional kiln. Janet is from Oak Ridge but now lives in West Knoxville with her husband and two children. Her interest in pottery started after collecting it for years, and she began showing her work five years ago. For those who love pottery, Janet’s colorful and unique work is perfect for any home! Come by The Town Framery & Gifts to check out her pieces and the works of our other crafters!

REGG ALLMAN is one of the most-acclaimed and beloved icons in rock and roll history. As a founding member of the legendary Allman Brothers Band and in his own storied solo career, Allman has long been a gifted natural interpreter of the blues, his soulful and distinctive voice one of the defining sounds in the history of American music. At the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in 2012, the ABB was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, in part a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the group’s seminal album Eat a Peach. Gregg himself,

inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, was also nominated for Best Blues Album for his stellar solo record, Low Country Blues. Allman’s critically acclaimed tell-all memoir, My Cross to Bear, was a New York Times Bestseller for many weeks. The book focuses on his journey as a struggling artist through the formation of the Allman Brothers Band and their ultimate explosion on the music scene, informed by the hindsight of Allman today, the survivor of unimaginable loss, drug and alcohol addiction, as well as a recent liver transplant.

NE OF THE fastest growing areas

in aesthetic medicine today is the use of injectable cosmetic fillers. These soft tissue fillers, which are injected into the skin, help to fill facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance. There are a wide range of fillers on the market today that are manufactured by a number of reputable pharmaceutical companies, each who have their own unique features and benefits. As to which filler is best for you, I would recommend that you consult with a trained and licensed medical professional with experience in the field of aesthetic medicine. While it’s not unusual for patients to take advantage of special offers available on these fillers, I encourage you to exercise caution here. No matter how great the offer is, remember that it’s your face. The money you save is no replacement for a licensed and experienced medical professional who I recommend inject your filler. And a great savings is no guarantee that the filler you receive is the best filler for you. At The Face Place™, I perform every facial filler injection. I am an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice. I am also a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. I have trained extensively with each facial filler company many times and keep this training current with any and all new techniques recommended. I founded The Face Place™ for individuals just like you who wish to take advantage on non-surgical facial rejuvenation in a relaxed medical setting. Patients should have total confidence not only in the facial filler being recommended, but also in the medical professional that provides the services. If you would like to learn how you can enjoy a more youthful and younger version of yourself, with the confidence in the medical provider that you deserve, I would like to invite you to call me to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a new, longer lasting, more natural looking, youthful you.

RITICS AND PEERS agree: Brian Regan has distinguished himself as one of the premier comedians in the country. The perfect balance of sophisticated writing and physicality, Brian fills theaters nationwide with fervent fans that span generations. It is the quality of his material, relatable to a wide audience and revered by his peers, which continues to grow Brian’s fan base. Releasing two critically acclaimed hour Comedy Central specials and DVDs in as many years – 2008’s “The Epitome of Hyperbole” and 2007’s “Brian Regan Standing Up” – Brian has set a standard of excellence

that others continually try to follow. With his first appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 1995, Brian solidified his place on the show and recently made his 20th appearance. He also includes regular visits to “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” on his schedule. A dorm room favorite, Brian’s 1997 CD, “Brian Regan Live,” has sold more than 150,000 copies and consistently charts in iTunes Top Ten Comedy Albums. History

BY TODD MORGAN, DIRECTOR OF PRESERVATION FOR KNOX HERITAGE & ETPA

East Tennessee’s Endangered 8 Main Street program. Structures such as the Dandridge School and Roper Tavern are still considered threatened, and there is concern about a proposal to relocate the Jefferson County Courthouse and the now empty adjacent Old Jail building. Dandridge has a good preservation track record, and we would like to see the community develop a detailed plan for continued preservation success.

E

ACH YEAR the East Tennessee

Preservation Alliance (ETPA) presents a list of eight endangered heritage sites in our region. These historic places are selected by the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance from nominations received from both members and the general public. The goal is to bring attention to these threatened heritage assets and encourage property owners and communities to develop preservation strategies for saving them. Historic preservation is important. There are proven benefits to property owners, neighborhoods, and entire cities. It is an essential tool for creating places with a high quality of life, stable property values, and tourism appeal. The preservation movement no longer relies on faith alone to explain why saving our heritage is beneficial to the greater good. There is now conclusive data proving it is a strategy that works. Community leaders and property owners need to be aware of this before more of our historic places are lost forever. Raising awareness of both the importance of historic preservation and specifically threatened places is why the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance produces this list annually. It is also why we are developing PLACES, the Preservation Toolbox for East Tennessee. Our goal is for the toolbox to assist with the process of developing viable solutions for saving our endangered heritage. Three new sites are introduced in the 2016 E8 list and one returns from past endangered lists:

Downtown Dandridge. In March 2016, the Dandridge Community Trust dissolved, ending the town’s participation in the Tennessee 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2016

Old Jefferson City Hall. This c. 1868 structure is an anchor on the southeast corner of downtown Jefferson City, just steps from Carson-Newman University. The City relocated its offices in 1989, and a local lodge is ending its use of the remaining space. Roof repair, as well as a new owner, is needed for this significant property first built by John Roper Branner, who is best known for his nearby residence “Glenmore Mansion.”

Oliver Springs Southern Railroad Depot. Built in 1893, this depot was once one of the busiest in the Coster Division. Original interior wood still has writing from 123 years ago, and the structure is serving as the local library and museum. However, there are significant improvements needed, including lead paint remediation and roof repairs. The town is currently applying for a grant to assist with the repairs.

New Salem Baptist Church. Built in 1886 by Isaac Dockery, New Salem is Sevier County’s oldest brick church building and its only historic African-American church. The structure has suffered from lack of maintenance and mold issues. The New Salem Renovation Task Force is spearheading fundraising efforts to raise the building out of the flood plain. They have set a goal to raise $500,000. Other properties returning to the 2016 Endangered 8 list include the former Tennessee Military Institute in Sweetwater, Tanner School (Cultural Center) in Newport, the Stonecipher-Kelley House in Morgan County, and Magnet Mills in Clinton. ETPA also maintains a Watch List of properties whose conditions may change. The current Watch List includes Brushy Mountain State Correctional Complex and the LaFollette Post Office, both of which appeared on the 2015 list and are experiencing movement toward new plans for use. Morristown College also remains on the list, as does Rural Mount and the Donaldson House, three properties located within Hamblen County. Previously endangered places now considered successfully saved include the Alexander Inn Guest House in Oak Ridge, Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, and Oak Grove School in Union County.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Broker vs. Wealth Manager Justin Goodbread, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

A

READER ASKS, “I am beyond

confused. What is the difference between a financial advisor, financial planner, broker, wealth manager, investment advisor, stock broker, and agent? I would like to seek financial guidance but have no idea where to start.” – Doug E. Doug, financial advisors, financial planners, brokers, wealth managers, investment advisors, stock brokers, and agents perform different functions. The financial world has done a very good job of confusing the public. When you start to examine this alphabet soup within the financial world, the distinction between these different titles often creates even greater confusion. Perhaps this is an over-simplified answer to the question, but this is a good general rule and a great starting point in your attempt to identify just the right

financial person for your specific financial need. A broker typically focuses on a small component of your financial life, while a true wealth manager looks at the complete picture. Think of it in terms of your personal financial statement (PFS), which reflects your total assets and liabilities. Many brokers spend the majority of their time on the asset side of the PFS. They are concerned with your investment accounts, retirement accounts, and maybe savings accounts. This is the limited area where most brokers focus their attention, although you may find a broker who will look at the risk to your PFS as it relates to your insurance or legal needs. In contrast, a wealth manager thoroughly examines the complete PFS, focusing on all of your assets and liabilities. It is not uncommon for your wealth manager to recommend debt reduction strategies, tax minimization strategies, business efficiency strategies, estate maximization, and other complex strategies that encompass your complete financial life, yet not at the expense of basic investment management. For the business owner, retiree, or high income earner, I would highly encourage you to seek the professional assistance of a true wealth manager who is acting as a fiduciary. You may be surprised at the affordability and the benefits this

relationship can yield to the safety and security of your personal finances that you deserve. At Heritage Investors, we are CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™ who engage a select group of clients on a comprehensive wealth management platform. Should you desire a complimentary second opinion to your current financial plan, please give us a call at 865-690-1155. BY JASON REEVES, RESEARCH HORTICULTURIST, THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE GARDENS

UT Gardens Plant of the Month: Golden Japanese Spikenard in your shade garden? Then Japanese Spikenard ‘Sun King’ Aralia cordata is the plant for you. In mid spring, just as the sun brightens the sky and warms the soil, from the earth arises one of the most spectacular golden perennials. The large compound leaves develop on red stems and lend a somewhat tropical feel to the summer shade garden. Aralia ‘Sun King’ forms a dazzling 3-4’ tall x 3’ wide clump but reportedly gets larger in cooler parts of the country. Two-foot-tall spikes of tiny white flowers in small umbels are produced in late summer, attracting all sorts of pollinators, especially bees, to the garden. The f lowers are followed by dark purple berries that birds will enjoy. Perfect for any partly shaded border or woodland garden, Sun King’s sprightly form will steal the show. It looks good paired with dark-leaved plants such as black mondo, Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, or Crimson Fire™ and Sparkling Sangria™ Loropetalum. Blue or dark green, largeleaved hostas such as ‘Blue Angel’, ‘Guardian Angel’, and ‘Empress Wu’ would provide contrast in color and texture. Holly fern, autumn

NEED SOME SUN

fern, or lady fern would also make interesting companions. For added summer color, several good annuals would include New Guinea impatiens, caladiums, and ‘Dragon Wing’ begonias. It also looks great grown in large pots. This plant has proven its durability across our region, and deer resistance is an added virtue. When grown in two to three hours of sun, Sun King’s brilliant gold foliage persists into the fall. As long as the soil is kept moist, it will perform well in more sun. However, this plant is best protected from the scorching

afternoon sun in the hotter parts of the country. In full shade, it loses some of its luster, becoming chartreuse to lime green while still adding texture and form to the garden. ‘Sun King’ prefers fertile, organic, rich, moist soil and is hardy to zones 4-8. Reportedly discovered in a Japanese department store’s nursery, Aralia ‘Sun King’ was brought to the U.S. by noted plantsman Barry Yinger. It is one of the most impressive herbaceous perennial introductions to come to market in years. Aralia ‘Sun King’ can be seen growing in all three UT Garden locations (Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson). The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. Step up Your Shoe Storage

H

EELS, FLATS, WEDGES,

stra p py, p lat fo rm , sa n d als, boots… yes, ladies, we have a wide variety of shoe styles, because there are so many different occasions that require different kinds of footwear and clothing. Unfortunately, without dedicated storage in a closet, shoes are usually piled on the floor where they get kicked around, stepped on, and need replacing more often. Properly storing shoes in your closet will help display your favorite footwear while saving space, time, and money. No matter what the size of your closet, these options will help you step up your shoe storage. Shoe Shelves Using dedicated solid shelves keep shoes in top form and easily seen when organized by type and color. To maximize space, place one shoe forward and the other backwards, which allows four pairs of women’s shoes on a 24” long shelf. This placement will also let you see the shoe and heal height at a glace. To better protect shoes, they can be placed in their original boxes or see-through plastic keepers. The same 24” shelf will only fit three shoe or plastic boxes side-by-side but can be stacked two or three high. Slanted Shelves with Shoe Fence Slanted shelves with a low decorative rail in the front keep shoes visible and organized. However, if you have a large number of shoes and a small closet, slanted shelves take up more space than straight shelves, because they are hung at an angle. This reduces the number of shoes that can be stored in the same space. Baskets for Flip Flops It’s summer, and women love their flip flops! Storing them in a pretty basket and clipping pairs together will save valuable space on your shoe shelves. The basket can fit on the floor or the top shelf of your closet. Shoe Cubbies Each side-by-side mini bin houses one pair of shoes. This makes for easy storage and minimizes dust. However, individual cubbies take up more closet space than dedicated shelving. If you have a small closet, opt for shelving. From high heel shoes to your shirts, Tailored Living will design and install a custom closet that meets your individual needs… even on a shoestring budget!

OIN SOME natural scientists from the University of Tennessee and learn to observe our natural world. On Saturday, June 18, the UT Gardens will present a day-long learning experience: Citizen Science in the Gardens. The event offers a variety of topics that should be of interest to students, gardeners, families, educators, and the general public. The symposium will

also address observing native and invasive species. The symposium is from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The cost is $50 for members of the Friends of the UT Gardens and $60 for non-members. June in the Garden

CAN YOU BELIEVE

that we’re entering the month that marks the halfway point in the year? Time, she is a flyin’! June is a transition month. We’re moving from the up and down weather patterns of spring into the more stable (although stormy) patterns of summer. We’re moving from the frantic activity of spring with its cleaning, preparing, and planting to the harvesting and maintenance stage. There are still many things that need to be done, so let’s get started! » If you haven’t planted your flowers yet, you still have time. Annuals and perennials can be planted throughout the summer. » If you’re planting trees and shrubs, try to get them in by the end of this month. Don’t panic if circumstances force you to plant them later, however. You’ll have some bonding time with a water hose this summer, but your plants should be ok. Some shrubs such as crape myrtles and grasses actually prefer to be planted when the soil is very warm. Bio-Tone or root stimulator will help get those feeder roots growing. » Veggies can still be planted and will spread your harvest over the summer.

You can sow beans, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and corn. You can also add more tomatoes and peppers. Even sweet potatoes can still be planted, as they aren’t as picky about cool soil as their russet cousins. » Veggie gardens will need lots of attention right now even if you’re finished planting. Watch carefully for beetles, bugs, and caterpillars that can destroy all your hard work. Hand removal is best unless they’re taking over! Insecticidal soap will work on most insects. You also need to watch for signs of fungal disease and blight. Call if you need advice. » Container flower gardens probably need attention. Cut back aggressive plants that are threatening to take over the pot, and replace under-performers. Deadhead, trim, and fertilize regularly to keep them looking nice. By the end of the month, they may be ready for a complete re-do! » Some lawn annuals are in need of a haircut. Don’t be afraid to cut them back to make them bush back out and start blooming again. Deadheading is important to encourage re-blooming and to prevent spent blooms from collecting in the branches and growing fungus and insect colonies. Don’t be stingy with fertilizer either! Heavy

bloomers such as petunias, calibrachoa, and tropical flowers prefer to have a mild strength application weekly. » Perennials may be getting leggy now. Cut them back so they’ll be fuller and less prone to flopping. Now is also the time to cut back spent flower stalks on iris and peonies, and remove dead foliage from spring bulbs. Fall blooming plants such as asters, mums, goldenrod, and autumn flowering sedums should be cut back so they’ll be shorter and stronger. » Keep pinching back herbs to keep them bushy and full of new growth. Don’t let them flower if you’re using them for cooking, because flowering reduces the flavor. It’s also best to harvest them in the morning when the essential oil level is at its peak. » The mild winter means that the insect population was not killed back. Keep your eyes open for signs of problems. Look for holes in the leaves, sticky leaves, light spots on leaves, and brown spots on the back of leaves (aka bug poop). Look for white, fuzzy spots in the crotches of plants or white or brown spots that move. Start treatment with an insecticidal soap. If that doesn’t work, then you can move up the toxicity chain. If you can’t figure out what’s going on, bring us a piece of your plant to diagnose. » Fungal spores also weren’t killed during the winter. Watch your plants, and begin treatment with a fungicide as soon as the first signs appear. » Guess what else wasn’t killed back? Weeds! I feel like I spend as much time weeding as I do everything else combined! Goose grass is my nemesis this year. Keep weeding, and apply Preen to reduce the workload. » Are you a lawn scalper? Cutting too short weakens grass and makes it more vulnerable to insects, disease, and weeds. Keep mower blades sharp, alter the direction you mow, and don’t mow too low! » Take care of the birds, and they’ll take care of you. If you have a feeder and a birdbath near your garden, the birds will reduce the insects that attack your plants. Keep them clean and filled to establish a regular clientele. » Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy your yard. Pick bouquets, harvest veggies, and smell the roses. Enjoy the beauty we’re surrounded with. Check our website and Facebook for summer sales and activities. Now go play in the dirt!

Open Up Your Outdoor Living Spaces

Home

GET READY to let the great outdoors in! The

sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer, and with it will come the endless ways available to have fun right in your own backyard. Are you really enjoying your outdoor spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space doesn’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, decorative lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often prevent homeowners from enjoying their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to this common dilemma by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evenings. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about all of your retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces, call Screens of East Tennessee today at 865-919-1615 or visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Don’t Replace, Resurface! WITH RESURFACING SOLUTIONS,

you’ll discover that customer satisfaction is our top priority! Just read what one of our hundreds of satisfied customers had to say about Resurfacing Solutions: “I promise that you won’t be disappointed if you have Resurfacing Solutions do work for you. They do a great job, are very conscientious, and you’ll love the way your counters, bath, etc. look for a fraction of the cost versus replacement! Everyone loves our vanity countertops, and so do we! My biggest regret is not knowing about their work before we spent several thousand dollars in our kitchen.” – P.H. of Knoxville Our goal is to educate as many homeowners as possible about Resurfacing Solutions and how we can save them thousands of dollars when remodeling their kitchens and baths. Most homeowners are unaware that bathtubs, showers, kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, and ceramic or porcelain tile can be resurfaced. There is no need to tear out and replace any of these surfaces when they can be brought back to a like-new condition for just a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the time of replacing them. Customers are amazed at their new, high-quality

surfaces that offer beauty, durability, and longevity. Include our five-year warranty and discover why it makes perfect sense to resurface instead of replace. One of our most frequently asked questions is how long a resurfaced area lasts. The answer would be between 8-12 years and, in some instances, longer depending on the surface, how well it’s maintained, and how often it’s used. We invite you to take advantage of our special summer promotions now through the end of June: » Combine 2 projects and save 10% » Combine 3 or more and save 15% » Bathtubs - $395 » Standard tub/shower stalls - $475 » K itchen countertops - $550 (35 sq ft or less) » Bathroom vanity tops - $195 (5 ft or less) » C eramic, porcelain, or any kind of tile - $7 per sq ft Call us today for a free, in-home consultation. A Level of Clean That is Nothing to Sneeze At

W

INTER’S SNOW and ice seem a

distant memory, and we’ll need to wait an entire year for the next dogwood blooms to herald in spring. Remember those precious few weeks when we opened up our windows to allow those mild spring breezes to freshen up our homes? Well, all too quickly the temperatures have risen, our windows are once again closed, and the air conditioners are turned back on. One challenge many of us experience during those periods of time when our homes are “buttoned up” is that dust and allergens are trapped inside. Your home’s HVAC and ceiling fans redistribute these contaminants throughout the entire house, as is evident by the dust on your furniture. No amount of dusting seems to alleviate the sneezing and coughing experienced by many of our family members resulting from these trapped contaminants. While there is no way to totally eliminate dust and allergens in your home, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce these airborne contaminants. One sure fire way is to remove dust and allergens from your home’s carpeting and Oriental rugs. While vacuuming helps, your vacuum only removes a small portion of the accumulated contaminants that are trapped deep in the fibers of your carpets and rugs.

Who Reads Homes & Land? An engaged, qualified audience of home-seekers

EAL ESTATE MARKETING

company Homes & Land Media recently surveyed their readers, which was designed both to capture demographics and to delve into readers’ attitudes about real estate, Homes & Land magazine, and Homes & Land ads and advertisers. Among the results: » A majority of survey respondents (56%) reported that they intend to buy a home within the next year, and 34% plan to buy within six months. » When they see a house they like in the magazine, readers are inclined to: • Find the property online (67%) • Drive by (55%) • Visit the agent’s website (48%) • Go to an open house (30%) • Call the agent directly (30%)* » Most (83%) say they’re likely to contact a real estate pro or select a company that advertises in Homes & Land. » Homes & Land readers are in their prime buying years – 73% are ages 35 to 64. They’re affluent and well educated, with 30% reporting a household income of $100,000 or more and 45% saying they have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Both stats beat the national averages. “We’ve been serving the real estate industry for more than 30 years, and our newest survey results show that we continue to attract an audience that’s strongly engaged with real estate and inclined to reach out to our advertisers,” said Russell Haskins, part owner. “In print and online, we’re getting our advertisers the customers they need.” About Homes & Land Media Homes & Land is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins. There is a Custom Home and There is Luxe Homes and Design Come Experience the Difference

A

NYONE WHO’S EVER BUILT or

thought of building a new home can agree with one thing: the process can be dauntless, requiring hundreds of key decisions that will ultimately determine how satisfied you are with your home. Should you have more cabinets or less? A large front porch or save the outdoor space for the lanai on the back of the house? A separate dining area or an open floor plan that includes kitchen, dining, and living areas combined? Can a utility room also serve as a grooming area for pets? Should you consider adding smarthome technology to your house? If your goal is to build a home that you and all members of your family will love well into the future, you’ll need a little guidance to get you there. The key to building a house you won’t regret coming home to lies with your builder. Luxe Homes & Design helps you from start to finish, each step of the way, by showing you how to get exactly what you want at the best possible price. With surprising precision, they can help you perceive room flow, lighting, space, and an assortment of details that most homeowners can be oblivious to. First and most importantly, compile a detailed list of what you want to build. Don’t focus on the size but what rooms you’ll need and how you’ll use them. Think in terms of who (and how many people) will use the room and the furniture you envision in the room. Eliminate all of the things you think you should add because “every house has them” but you’ll never use. Formal living rooms, dining rooms, and large bathtubs frequently fall into this category. Large “glamour” baths photograph well but don’t make it any easier to get ready in the morning. Look for rooms that can serve dual uses. If you only use your dining room for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, maybe that space could be an office for the other 363 days of the year, and the dining table, sans extra leaves, could be the desk. Builder Jenny Blalock’s specialty is helping you eliminate the stress from the building process and making your dream home a reality. Any custom built home should be a reflection of the family that will live there, so Luxe Homes & Design begins each project with a twofold objective: to interpret the client’s needs and Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

desires and to creatively incorporate them into a pleasing and functional dream home. Since most people have only a vague idea of what they want, Jenny will determine information about each client’s lifestyle and tastes and then interpret them. Jenny is there with you during

each step of the process to help you refine your options that Jenny Blalock meet your Licensed General Contractor budget. A home is an investment in your future, so you want it to fit your lifestyle today as well as 20 years from now. So, do not worry about the home construction process being too complicated. Get Proactive

Break the Cycle of Soil in Your Home

W

HEN IT COMES TO

your floors, soil is any foreign matter that accumulates, including dirt, dust, grease, or cleaning chemicals. As your family and pets move throughout the home, these contaminants are spread from one room to another, from carpet and hardwood to tile and back again. This process can leave the homeowner frustrated and not sure what to do. When one part of your home is cleaned, the soil load from other areas will quickly contaminate the cleaned areas, making your effort futile. In addition, the very act of scrubbing a kitchen or bathroom floor pushes tiny particles of dirt, oil, and grime deeper within your floor, causing it to look dingy and discolored. Without a deep down, pore cleansing, extraction method of cleaning, one can only hope to reach the surface level of the floor, which has little effect on its

appearance. This process just keeps repeating itself, so the home environment never gets truly clean. Getting proactive will stop this grimy process in its tracks, eliminating all embedded soil from within your tile and grout or concrete, as well as removing dust mites, soil, and traffic patterns from your carpets. Your floors will be sanitized, grout returns to its natural color, and all soil that’s been deeply embedded in your flooring is extracted and evacuated. Once all the flooring types in your home have been cleaned and sanitized, it’s a great idea to seal your tile and grout and concrete areas. Surface Doc’s high quality sealer is backed by a lifetime guarantee and will make future cleaning easy. Imagine never using a chemical on your floor again. As for carpets, Surface Doc recommends using a Teflon Guard to protect the carpet fibers from pet stains, accidents, and dirt. Once your entire home is shining from the

Memorial Association. About Marble Springs State Historic Site Marble Springs State Historic Site is the last remaining home of John Sevier. Born in Virginia in 1745, John Sevier made a name for himself as a Revolutionary War Hero during the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780), a key player and Governor of the short-lived State of Franklin (1784-1788), and ultimately was elected to serve as the first Governor of the State of Tennessee (1796). Marble Springs was the approximate 350-acre farm that Sevier lived on from 1801-1815, the last years of his life. Sevier named his farm Marble Springs because of the Tennessee Rose Marble that was quarried on site and the natural springs that flowed on the property. While visiting Marble Springs, you will have the opportunity to tour several historic structures that are designed to represent various aspects of John Sevier’s life and times. These structures include the Tavern, Loom House, Smoke House, Spring House, and the John Sevier Cabin and detached kitchen.

out bugs in full force! Call Dayton’s and avoid wasting time and money on do-it- yourself products that won’t work for the long term. Mosquitoes: Recommended monthly through October, Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program uses a treatment process that kills existing mosquitoes and prevents many mosquito eggs from becoming biting adults. Dayton’s treats mosquito resting areas, landscaping, vegetation, trees, and shrubs, as well as breeding sites such as standing water, pool areas, and waterscapes. Carpenter bees: The chambers they build within wood for laying eggs can be as long as 10 feet, and then they come back to the same place year after year. Fill up the holes they drill, and they will just drill them in another place. Ants: Killing them where you see them doesn’t do much good, for you have to treat an ant problem at its source, which is usually outdoors. Did you know that an ant hill can go several feet underground? Wasps/yellow jackets: Don’t risk getting stung by eliminating their nests. Let Dayton’s take the risk, NOT YOU! New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a contract through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather bugs with an annual pest agreement. Other services include pest control for ladybugs/bedbugs, convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/quarterly/onetime pest control services, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation. I

T ISN’T A STRETCH at all to

say that Johnny Winter was one of the preeminent Blues men of our time. Revered and respected, we lost him far too soon on July 14, 2014. Before his death, I had the privilege of interviewing Johnny twice. Both interviews were orchestrated by his dear friend and manager, Paul Nelson. I recently interviewed Paul about his new album. This was our first chat since Johnny’s passing, so I asked about how it had been for him in the days immediately after his dear friend’s death. “It wasn’t easy,” said Paul. “There is a lot of family involved, and the band involved, but we put together the Johnny Winter All-Star shows, and that was great to honor Johnny. It was therapeutic for the band as well. And we still do it. We did a series of shows in February and March, and the movie 'Down and Dirty' came out in March. And we had guests. I went to Jamaica, and we did it with Govt. Mule and Warren Haynes and Sonny (Landreth) – good friends of mine. Edgar Winter, Johnny’s brother, did one – actually, online at Buddy Guy’s at his Legends club. Ronnie Baker Brooks, Debbie Davies, Joe Lewis Walker, Earl Slick, and Mike Zito. “Johnny had such a comeback toward the end that he got so much healthier, except he had the emphysema, which finally was his downfall. But other than that, people saw this resurgence, and that’s actually what the movie is about , among other things about rock history – his history and Blues.” Before our conversation shifted to talk about his new CD, I asked Paul for some closing thoughts about Johnny – something that he’d like to share that maybe people are not hearing about the Blues icon. “He had a great sense of humor,” said Paul. “Not only was he a great musician and artist, but his love for the Blues made him. Who played this, who was on this recording, who had the drinking problem, or who had a this – all the little nuances of the Blues. He knew everything, and I was honored that he 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2016

Paul Nelson took me under his wing and that he turned me onto that. ‘Get this album and listen to this specific riff instead of going out and buying all the records by Chuck Berry or all the records by different people. This is what I learned. This is what we all learned back in the day.’ That was great. “On the tour bus, he listened to Blues. His iPod had 15,000 songs on it, and he listened to it from when he woke until show time and then afterwards. Every d a y. H e w a s just constantly inputting that information, and then those riffs would come up during that night’s performance. He was a sponge. He was a great guy. At the end of those past few years, he was totally clean. “A lot of people don’t know that I had him get laser surgery. He was no longer legally blind. Yeah, that was a big deal. And then, of course, the methadone was gone, the drinking was gone, the smoking was gone. He was really enjoying his life toward the end. He was completely free of all that stuff, and the fans were noticing it. The way he was

performing – that’s why it was so important to put out that record, ‘Roots’ and ‘Step Back,’ which got him and me a Grammy.” Did Paul feel that Johnny would like how he’s being remembered and what his legacy is so far? “Absolutely,” said Paul. “There was a reason why he wasn’t up there with his cohorts, and it was old management. He pushed the envelope, too. He made Ozzy Osborne look like he had training wheels. But once that was cleaned up, everybody started realizing what an important piece of the puzzle Johnny was and how Rolling Stone should’ve mentioned him in the top 10, at least! I mean, it’s Hendrix, Johnny, and then Stevie Ray Vaughan. A lot of people don’t know that Vaughan used to come over to Johnny’s house in Texas and hang around with him. Johnny would teach him riffs. “It’s that important. The Grammy solidified it. The TV appearances. Crossroads. And now you have to buy Johnny’s stuff; you have to listen to Johnny. The whole jam band resurgence is the way Johnny played. His connections with the Allman Brothers, his connections with Hendrix, his connections with The Beatles, his connections with Janis Joplin, his connections with Vaughan – he was everywhere in musical history for decades. Every major event: The ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s; the ’90s were bad years. The movie described that. The movie is very enlightening about what happens. People are going to be surprised. They’ll finally see the man behind the music.” Read my interview with Paul in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com.

Four Common Financial Mistakes Homeowners Make

Business

Mistake 1: Selecting a 3 0 -ye a r home mor t ga ge instead of 15 -yea r home mortgage If you can’t afford a 15-year mortgage, you have likely exceeded your budget. When John Fawaz you select a 30-year mortgage, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL you are paying three times PLANNER™ more interest. Plus, during the first 10 years, you build little equity. Mistake 2: Not investing the difference in mortgage payments between 15 and 30 home mortgages in the stock market Due to low interest rates, many people are encouraged to pay as little as possible toward their home and instead invest the savings into the stock market. While on the surface it appears to be a good idea, in reality, it’s not. Most homeowners are already investing in the stock market through their pension or 401(k). So why put all your eggs in one basket? After all, your home is an alternative investment in real estate. No one knows what the future holds. Having your home paid off reduces financial stress and represents a significant asset in your overall portfolio. Mistake 3: Taking out a home equity loan to pay off credit card debt When you think about this, it really sounds good in theory. But unfortunately, for most homeowners, a year later they have newly acquired credit card debt in addition to their home equity loan. Plus, interest rates on home equity loans, which are usually tied to current prime rates of interest, typically go up over time, increasing your indebtedness. Mistake 4: Taking out a reverse mortgage at retirement A type of reverse of a conventional home mortgage, you get dollars out of your home today by selecting from a variety of payment options. You don’t have to pay the mortgage back until you move, sell your home, or you pass away. Reverse mortgages generally have very high fees, and unless you truly understand how they work, they should be considered only as a last resort. JESSICA STEWART

has two passions – art and school – so it makes sense that she chose a career that combined the two. Now the art teacher at Christenberry Elementary has been named Knox County’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year. “When the staff picked me as Teacher of the Year, it was a huge honor – one that still hasn’t sunk in all the way,” said Jessica. “Although Loretta Hale, one of our best teaching assistants, made a giant banner outside my classroom, so that made it feel pretty real. I can’t say enough what a great staff I work with and how fortunate I feel to be selected by such an amazing group of people.” Jessica earned her bachelor’s degree in fine art with a concentration in ceramics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She stayed at UTK for her master’s degree in teacher education. “This is my fourth year teaching at Christenberry, but I also interned at Christenberry, so this is really my fifth year with these kiddos,” she said. Jessica credits her own teachers with instilling her love of education. “I have always had really passionate and influential teachers in my life

– people who really went above and beyond their job description to make sure I knew I was loved and cared for,” she said. “Kathy Bryant at Claxton Elementary really took me under her wing and spent a lot of time getting to know me. She used to let me make all her project examples for her first grade classes and help with ‘teacher’ jobs like making copies and organizing supplies. I think this very positive connection early on was a huge influence on my choice of career.” A typical day for Jessica involves

teaching six classes, one per grade level, for 45 minutes each. Each class has a specific goal and an agenda to help the students reach it. Their projects may include weaving, sewing, and all sorts of other artistic techniques. “Ideally, by the time they leave me in six years, they will have a wide breadth of experience and a deep understanding of each kind of art making I teach,” said Jessica. Jessica loves the atmosphere of learning and progress that exists at Christenberry. “I love changing kids’ attitudes from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can if I try,’” she said. “I work really hard to teach my students that I’m there for them – that as long as they are willing to try, so am I. This means that as long as they keep a good attitude, they can learn. Seeing the change in outcomes when kids switch their attitudes is priceless. If they believe they can do something, then they almost always can.”

How Will Owning a Small Business Impact My Marriage?

I

N A NUTSHELL , if you’ve got a

rock solid marriage, owning a small business will probably strengthen your relationship. If you have a lousy marriage, owning a small business will likely expedite your trip to court. Judy and I are often asked how our marriage has survived 33 years of self-employment. Not to say that we haven’t disagreed at times, we truly believe that working together has actually improved our relationship. Before we entered the world of selfemployment, we each had separate careers. I was employed in industrial sales, and Judy worked in research and development for a large pharmaceutical company. Every morning, five days a week, we got into our separate vehicles and headed in separate directions. The major difference between being an employee and self-employment is that we face each new day as a team. One row boat and two rowers, rowing in the same direction.

The major difference between being an employee and self-employment is that we face each new day as a team.

Our self-employment experience provides us with a completely different perspective on life as we work as a team toward our shared objectives. We win together and support each other when things don’t go as well as we might hope. But you need to make some adjustments in thinking if you hope to be successful in business as a couple. » Park your ego. Edify both your spouse and your team for their successes.

Business

» Abandon the blame game. Mistakes are inevitable. Focus on solutions. Succeed and admit your shortcomings as a team. » Divide responsibilities between you and your spouse based on your skill sets. » If your spouse stumbles, give them the freedom to discover their own solutions. When asked for assistance, offer help with a servant’s attitude. » Be slow to criticize. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by shooting your life partner. Owning a small business will reveal a great many things about each of you. How you choose to respond to what you learn will determine the success of both your business and your marriage.

Are You Root Bound? POOR LITTLE GUYS.

As normal, I’d bought my spring flowers and put them in the courtyard to plant as I got around to them. One day I’d plant several, other days just one or two. It’s my annual routine. No agenda, each year different than the one before. Somehow this year I missed two plants I’d bought a few weeks back. They’d gotten covered by sprawling greenery. Once I finally discovered them, they were next to dead. Withered and dry, there seemed little option but to toss them in the trash. Good thing I didn’t! Finally pulling them out of their store-bought container, it was clear they were dying. Roots were circling one another desperately looking for some place to extend their little fingers and attempt to grow. Repotting them just in time, they are now healthy, green, and in full bloom, as if especially proud to have been freed. I bet they’ve forgotten all about those few days of their near-death experience. So much can be learned from creation. A lot like those pitiful plants, we too become

bound by unhealthy roots; some by way of past experiences, some current hurts, others dreams that have withered on the vine. Life can sometimes seem a continued flurry of feeling contained by barriers that keep us from growth. Yet there are things we can do that produce the freedom to grow: » Crush your container. What’s holding you back? Is it a relationship you’re hoping finds its way into perfection? A lost dream? Some unanswered prayer? Or perhaps a past of pain? Crush it and free yourself to do great things with your life. » Bust through your “bound-age.” One of the hardest life lessons is that no one can free us from our own limited thinking. There is no such person who can say the right thing at just the right time, nor any person that can truly make things better. Our perspective belongs to us. » Pay attention to the tension. Pain always has a purpose. If you find yourself in a “rut,” then heed the warning, use it! Thank God for it, and then put that feeling to work and make changes that can promote growth as

opposed to keeping you bound. Have you been feeling a little rootbound? That can be just what you need to re-energize your agenda and prioritize your growth. Free yourself by identifying and then changing those very things that are holding you back. Personal growth is just that. Personal. No one can do that for you, nor can you do that for anyone else. Give yourself the opportunity to think big, reinvigorate those dreams, and take a leap of faith. You just may find a few new blooms waiting to emerge. Don’t give up! Every day is a new chance to replant dreams, visions, and hopes for your life. Let them live! Chase them down. Just start with a healthy root system and grow from there. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Inexpensive Entertainment for the Whole Family

WHEN TIMES are tight financially, it can

seem like entertainment options for your family have evaporated. Yet, believe it or not, there are cheap entertainment options for the entire family. The lean times are a great opportunity to teach everyone in the family that entertainment doesn’t have to cost a fortune and that some of the best things in life are free. Here are some ideas to keep family life fun without breaking the bank. Walking and hiking While walking and hiking is often looked at nowadays as a form of exercise by kids, doing it in a fun way can make it less boring and chore-like. There are many scenic walking and hiking trails in our area. These places are also great to bike, skate, fly kites, fish, and play. Take along a picnic and make a day of it. Historical sites and public locations There are numerous historical sites in our area. Some may charge a small admission price, but the majority of them are free. You should also check the zoo and public swimming pools for free days.

Town squares, book stores and libraries Some of the best entertainment for families can be found at libraries and book stores. Both often have story times, guest speakers, and other free events that are of interest to the public. Don’t forget that you always have the option to rent free DVDs at the library. Pick up a few and have a movie night. Local schools and universities High schools and universities will generally have something going on for the public such as plays, musicals, and concerts. By taking advantage of these inexpensive – and sometimes free – events, you’ll not only be providing a source of artsy entertainment to your family, but you are broadening your children’s minds. Who knows, it could possibly spark their interest for a future hobby or career. Backyard fun Who said you have to leave home for family entertainment? There was once a time when families didn’t venture away from home, and they had no problems coming up with their

own entertainment. Ideas for backyard fun include playing volleyball, kickball, baseball, soccer, and other “ball” activities. Young children love digging in a sandbox, making mud pies, and doing simple but fun things like collecting fallen nuts or rocks. The possibilities of backyard fun are endless. If your family is going through a lean time financially, start planning and adding some new, inexpensive activities into your lives. Many think entertainment and money automatically go hand-in-hand. That is not true. By introducing inexpensive/free entertainment into your family life, you are teaching your children that some of the best things in life are free – like family – and you are teaching them how to use their imagination and creativity. Teaching Our Children to Clean W HAT DOES CLEANING

h ave t o d o w i t h m a n n e rs ? Gentlemen and ladies strive to show respect for all things, and remember, the definition of manners or etiquette is helping those around you feel valued and comfortable. So, when we keep our homes, rooms, and cars clean, we show honor to those who live and visit these places, and we create a place of comfort. Have you ever been to someone’s home and are afraid to put your purse on their floor or place your coat anywhere? Yes… I have, too. This makes for a very uncomfortable situation. Today I think many parents are missing the opportunity to have their children play a larger role in keeping their homes clean and tidy, but more importantly are the opportunities lost for children to experience pride and even joy in being able to care for things. There’s no reason children cannot be taught to clean just as well as we clean. They just need to be taught and held accountable. 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2016

I always grinned on the inside when my son would call for me to come and see what he had done when he finished cleaning his room or the bathroom or when he had finished doing a special job. He wanted me to inspect, but of course, more than anything, he was proud of what he had done, and he wanted me to see it. Parents, one of the ways to teach children how to show honor and respect for all the things they have is to allow them to help take care of them. It’s such a privilege to have a home, toys, a bed, etc. Our children need to understand that these things took hard work by someone to acquire, and to show our gratitude for the things we’ve been given, we properly take care of them. We’re missing out on great opportunities for our children when we fail to teach them how to properly clean and manage a home. Remember, we’re supposed to be teaching our children how to be independent of us so that soon, they will be able to live without

us and properly care for their own homes. This doesn’t just happen but takes years of practice and years of being given more and more responsibility so they can excel at these responsibilities. Recently I was speaking to my son on the phone while he was at college and I asked him what he was doing. He said, “I’m taking apart the stove to clean it.” I thought, “Yay… he really was listening!” Parents: Teach them. They can do it, and believe it or not, it will add to their joy.

ATTOOS HAVE BECOME increasingly popular.

Approximately 40% of people in the U.S. between the ages of 26-40 have at least one tattoo. However, the incidence of tattoo regret has also increased. A recent poll suggests that about 20% of individuals regret getting a tattoo. Fortunately, for those who rue their tattoo, the practice of tattoo removal has just recently taken a gigantic revolutionary step. Before lasers were used, people desiring to have their tattoos removed suffered through various procedures such as acid treatments, dermabrasion, salabrasion, and non-selective laser ablation. These procedures frequently resulted in significant scarring and left open the opportunity for serious infection. Surgical excision and subsequent skin grafting, while effective, also caused disfigurement. For decades, Charlatans have been hawking tattoo removal creams. At best, these creams are ineffective. At worst, they are expensive and can cause noticeable scarring. In the 1990s, physicians began employing Q-switched lasers to treat unwanted tattoos. While fairly effective, these lasers generally require at least 12 treatments and often as many as 18 or more. Q-switched lasers remained the gold standard for tattoo removal until the release of the PicoSure laser in 2013. With its picosecond pulse duration, the PicoSure laser literally shatters tattoo ink into microscopic dust-like particles that can then be eliminated by the body. The result is that it takes less than half the treatments of Q-switched lasers to remove a tattoo. In a published scientific study, 100% of patients obtained greater than 75% clearance after two to four treatments with the PicoSure laser. I had been evaluating the PicoSure laser prior to its FDA clearance. While this laser can treat all tattoo colors, what held me back from adopting this exciting technology was its inconsistent results with red ink. This concern has been specifically addressed by the addition of a 532 nm wavelength, which is designed to more effectively treat red, orange, and yellow tattoo ink colors. Even with the new gold standard PicoSure laser, tattoo removal remains a tricky business. As a board certified dermatologist at Southeastern Dermatology, I will be on-site to directly oversee your treatment and ensure the best possible outcome in the fewest number of sessions. Please schedule a complimentary consultation to see if this procedure is right for you.
