From the Publisher DURING THIS TIME of year, we

begin to celebrate the holiday season. We have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year celebrations ahead of us. It is a time of family gatherings where we catch up on busy lives, share gifts, eat specially prepared meals, and reflect on all our blessings. One blessing I will be remembering, especially this November, is my dad. He passed away six years ago on November 11th, Veterans Day. My dad was a WWII veteran who never spoke about his service. Much of what I know now came out a few years prior to his death. I found out he actually was one of the landing forces at Normandy on D-Day. I found old photos of him in France during that time which chronicled his tour of duty. I also found mementos my dad saved during his time of service.

My dad did not think of himself as a hero or that he did anything special. He only thought of himself as a soldier doing his duty. I admire my dad as a soldier and as a father. He is forever in my heart. Many of you have family and friends that are in service to our country or who gave their lives in service. This month, on Veterans Day and on Thanksgiving Day, remember their service and give thanks for that service which safeguards our country, our hometowns, and our freedoms. From all of us at Everything Knoxville, we wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving, and we salute all of those who are veterans and those currently serving. Enjoy your holiday, and give thanks for your blessings.

RETIREMENT PLANNING

E P R E S E N TIN G T H E

combined experience of a dedicated group of professionals from the worlds of accounting, finance, insurance, taxes, legal, and retirement planning, Marsh Professional Group offers clients an uncommon level of expertise, whether they are planning for retirement or already enjoying retirement. Due to the many moving parts inherent in retirement planning – including Social Security, Medicare taxes, long-term care, retirement funds, investing, and wills, to name a few – a piecemeal approach to retirement can leave gaps in the best intentioned plan. They recognize that making a plan for living in retirement requires comprehensive strategies that are different than simply saving for retirement. Whether your vision for retirement includes freedom, family, security, or adventure, their integrated approach allows them to craft a financial plan as unique as you are. Everything Knoxville is excited to share with you our recent interview with financial planner and CPA, Yvonne Marsh. Yvonne is also the co-founder of Marsh Professional Group along with her husband, Michael Marsh, CPA. EK: We typically think of CPAs as tax accountants. How did you get into retirement planning? Yvonne: The first part of my career was with a national accounting firm auditing banks and investment portfolios, and I enjoyed it very much. But as I watched my parents work through their own retirement planning, and my aunt unexpectedly lost her husband very early in her retirement years, I realized that retirement planning was how I could take my investment and tax expertise and help retirees plan for a comfortable, secure retirement. So I went on to get my Series 7 and 66 investment licenses and my insurance licenses, along with my CPA designation, and transitioned into financial planning and money management. I really love helping people find 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2015

the answers to their questions – whatever they may be. EK: While most people appreciate the necessity for retirement planning, they are often overwhelmed by competing messages from the hundreds of “experts” offering to assist them. What advice can you offer them? Yvonne: Look for someone you can relate to. It’s an important relationship that can continue for many years, so take the time to understand not just the technical approach to their financial planning, but how they relate to you as a person. Do they explain concepts in understandable terms? Do they take the

time to understand what’s important to you? A favorite part of my job is really getting to know my clients and establishing strong relationships. I want them to be able to pick up the phone and call me about anything – financial or not. I also find that husbands and wives are looking for a financial planner they can build a relationship with and that can continue on for the surviving spouse, which statistically is going to be the wife. I take great pride in the trust those relationships represent. EK: There are a great many disciplines involved in creating a retirement plan, including taxes, legal, financial planning, medical, long-term care, and estate planning. How is your comprehensive approach to retirement planning unique, and how do your clients benefit? Yv o n n e : Traditionally people might have separate professionals providing investment advice, preparing tax returns, and providing legal advice for example. But those advisors aren’t talking to each other. Is the investment advisor thinking about the tax consequence of his advice? Has the attorney made sure the IRA beneficiaries match the intent of the will? We know the importance of an integrated team that is looking at a client’s whole financial picture, and that’s exactly what we have at Marsh Professional Group. Tax, investment, legal, insurance, and planning – all under one roof. And we talk to each other! EK: I know the word “comprehensive” may intimidate some of us, but share with our readers why your comprehensive approach may actually be simpler, resulting in greater Photo by D. Roberts Photography

peace of mind than the piecemeal approach chosen by many. Yvonne: I think the number one thing I hear from clients after I’ve finished their financial plan is that they are relieved. They can see how everything fits together and how much income they can reasonably expect in retirement. Before I begin, I have my clients rank their concerns from least to most, and I make sure their plan addresses every concern they have. My overriding goal is to translate complex topics into understandable terms that makes sense to everyone. EK: So once they have their plan, how do you help them implement it? Yvonne: That’s where our integrated team comes into play. I am proud to say we are an independent, fiduciary fee-based planning firm, and we can meet people wherever their needs are – flat-fee based money management, tax return preparation, tax minimization strategies, finding the right insurance for Medicare, life or long-term care, or helping them get their wills and financial powers of attorney updated. EK: You’ve been quoted as saying that “living in retirement requires different strategies than saving for retirement.” Explain. Yvonne: Saving for retirement is pretty straightforward – we are all familiar with 401(k) plans, IRAs, etc. That is the realm of a traditional financial advisor. But we answer the fundamental question of “Now what?” as pre-retirees approach that transition point in life where they have to live on whatever they have saved for retirement. For example, investment choices should be driven by time, rather than account title. Investments used in the first phase of retirement should be more conservative than investments used in the second phase and beyond. Most people come to me with their entire retirement savings invested as one big pot, rather than carved out by time. I show them how to rethink that strategy. EK: Tell our readers about the special Social Security and Medicare services offered by Marsh Professional Group. Yvonne: Fundamental to “living in retirement” is learning how to maximize your Social Security benefits and minimize your Medicare costs. For example, many people aren’t aware of how to take advantage of SS spousal benefits – whether you are married, divorced, or widowed. I use software that allows me to analyze each client’s unique situation and show them how to maximize their benefits. For example, one couple was missing out on $1,000/month in spousal benefits, and another divorced widower had never claimed his ex-spouse survivor benefit. Medicare is such a specialty that we’ve hired an insurance specialist dedicated to helping our clients understand all of their Medicare

options. Because we are independent, we can look across all companies and find the most competitive rates. We are able to consistently save retirees money. EK: You also offer an innovative approach to long-term care that most of our readers will be unfamiliar with. How does that work? Yvonne: Retirees need a solution for longterm care costs that Medicare doesn’t cover. Let’s face it, traditional long-term care insurance has some drawbacks – it’s somewhat expensive, the premiums increase as we age, and no one likes the “use it or lose it” idea of paying premiums year after year. I prefer to use asset-based long-term care in my financial planning. It is an investment, not an expense. You simply reallocate a portion of your savings into an insurance vehicle that provides a multiplied amount for long-term care, a death benefit to your heirs if you never use it, or a cash value if you change your mind. It’s a great way to protect your investment portfolio from health care costs without “spending” precious resources on traditional long-term care insurance. EK: What else makes your firm unique in the marketplace? Yvonne: An important part of our mission at Marsh Professional Group is financial

education. We host a monthly lunch ‘n learn for current and prospective clients, plus I regularly speak at civic groups, senior centers, and investment clubs. I’m a firm believer that knowledge is power, and giving people confidence as they enter their retirement years is important to us. EK: How can our readers learn more about Marsh Professional Group? Yvonne: Just give us a call and set up a complimentary one-hour meeting. It’s the best way for us to get to know each other. I can learn about their unique situation and see if we might be of help. Or RSVP to our next lunch ‘n learn, or email general questions to our Client Service Manager at erin@marshpros.com.

Dozens of businesses and organizations will be turning on hundreds of brightly lit Christmas trees adorning buildings downtown and across the city. The new Knoxville Events app can be downloaded onto most smartphones and other mobile devices now. Use the app to vote for your favorite Window Wonderland display. Participating merchants and restaurants will be turning their storefront windows into a festive holiday display, coinciding with “How the Grinch Stole Knoxville” or their own creative décor. Votes can also be cast on the City’s Office of Special Events Facebook page at www. facebook.com/cityofknoxvillespecialevents. Social Security Survivor Benefits

How do you claim them? How much can you receive?

Business

GROWING&MOVING! 306 Prosperity Dr., Suite 101 Knoxville, TN 37923

ABOUT FIVE MILLION

widowed Americans get Social Security survivor benefits. If your spouse has passed, you may be eligible to collect them. This means that you could receive as much as Ali Swofford, 100% of your late spouse’s Social PhD Security income.1,2 You can file for survivor benefits at age 60, but you have to call Social Security to apply. Dial 1-800-7721213 to do that. The SSA doesn’t yet permit widows and widowers to apply for survivor benefits online.1 Are you eligible to receive all of your late spouse’s Social Security income or less? That depends; you can apply for survivor benefits at full retirement age (66 or 67) and receive 100% of the monthly Social Security benefit of your late spouse. If you apply for survivor benefits between age 60 and full retirement age, you will receive 71.5-99% of your late spouse’s monthly benefit.2 Social Security does cap the benefit amount that a family can receive. A household can’t get survivor benefits exceeding 150-180% of those received by the late Social Security recipient.2 Divorce is no barrier to survivor benefits. Divorced widows and widowers are eligible. Even if you have been widowed and marry again after age 60, you qualify for Social Security survivor benefits. If you remarry prior to age 60, you can’t receive survivor benefits while married.2 In certain circumstances, you can “switch out” of survivor benefits. If you remarry and your new spouse gets Social Security, you can apply for spousal benefits based their earnings. If the amount of the spousal benefit would be greater than your survivor benefit, you will get benefits equal to the higher amount.2 Want to learn more? coats, such as Beagles and Boxers, need to be brushed at least once per week. Long flat coats, such as Retrievers, need brushed more often. Without regular brushing, tangles and mats form, which lead to skin infections. Hair that is well cared for provides a good barrier against harmful bacteria and other pathogens. Brushing distributes the oils from the dog’s skin throughout the coat, removes dirt, keeps the skin clean and irritant free, and helps the hair form a protective uniform shield. Apply the same amount of pressure you do when you brush your own hair. Don’t move the brush gingerly. A long-bristled brush meant for people works the best. The goal is to keep the hairs individual, untangled, and free from mats. If your dog has a thick undercoat, such as a German Shepherd, use a wire loop with serrated edges brush with a handle that pulls along the dog’s hair. A curry comb

with a rubber disk with short, teeth-shaped prongs works well. Brushing can also locate ticks, a lump, a skin lesion, or hot spot that needs medical attention. Curly hair dogs, such as Poodles, do not tangle but mat. They need to be groomed at least every three months to remove mats and trim the hair. Dogs whose hair are straight and get brushed regularly like a Lhasa Apso need to be cut regularly, including the face. Avoid cutting your own dog’s hair, especially behind the ears where they can accidentally be cut. With the holidays approaching, give John, the certified groomer at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, a call today to discuss your needs and options.

Gratitude of the Season

O

N THE FOURTH Thursday

in November, most of us will gather with our families and offer thanks for the many blessings we have experienced and, hopefully, are yet to come. We will celebrate this happy occurrence with a feast that for many of us will be the richest and most satisfying meal of the year. As we bow our heads in gratitude at the Thanksgiving table, we will look directly at the foods that can hold our destiny in the coming years and largely determine how many blessings our future will hold. Our dinner plate holds our fate. It’s really no secret; we are what we eat or, better yet, what we absorb. Most of us in our daily lives forget this simple truth. We have on our plates the ability to govern our health. Of course there are always special occasions such as holidays to splurge and enjoy festivities, but on a day-to-day basis, our food choices help determine our health. Understanding extremes of foods and its effects helps us to make better choices for our health. Balance is key to health. Eating extremes of foods such as red meats and sugar has the quality of balance

that produces ill effects in the body. Conversely, a plate consisting of more balanced foods such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and occasional fish will have healthy effects. Incorporating side dishes such as pickles and condiments adds much to healthy fare and allows for more variety of taste, which is key to balance. When all five tastes are represented in a meal such as sweet, bitter, sour, salty, and pungent, we feel satisfied with no cravings. Indulgences are common, especially during the holidays, but sugar can have devastating results on our immune system and cardiovascular system, as well as creating emotional upheavals. Making side dishes such as chutneys, vegetables made into quick pickles, and condiments made with sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds can make a world of difference to creating a luscious fare. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our gratitude for family, friends, and all our many blessings. Make this holiday season a season of gratitude for our health as well. Realizing that what we eat helps determine our future will definitely place this season of gratitude as one to remember.

people give up wearing or don’t ever try wearing contact lenses. Comfort and vision are of equal importance when considering contact lenses. If both aren’t acceptable, it is easy to give up on contact lenses and rely on glasses alone for clear vision. Traditional soft contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable lenses have each had their shortcomings when dealing with astigmatism and presbyopia. Soft toric lenses can shift on the eye, causing unstable vision. Rigid gaspermeable lenses can be uncomfortable. Now we have a much better option for those who have either given up on contact lenses or have not been happy with the vision or comfort they currently get from their contact lenses. Duette Progressives are the latest generation of hybrid contact lenses that combine the comfort of soft lenses with the clear, stable vision of rigid gas permeable lenses. Duette Progressive’s rigid center delivers crisp, clear vision at all distances to let you focus on near objects, as well as enhancing intermediate and distance vision. With Duette Progressive, you can live focused… any time… any distance! The primary requirements to be successful with contact lenses are clear vision, comfort, and health. Duette Progressives provide crystal clear vision at all distances, advanced materials that are highly permeable to oxygen and contain UV blockers, and are very comfortable for all-day wear. For optimal success, it is best to find an eye doctor who is very experienced in fitting these types of lenses. Dr. Brent Fry of Premier Eyecare has fit more than a thousand patients with hybrid contact lenses during the past 10 years. He is currently one of a few select doctors in the country who is on the SynergEyes advisory board to help other doctors around the country learn how to fit these unique lenses. He is also a beta tester for a new hybrid contact lens developed for keratoconus. His experience and passion for fitting contact lenses provides an excellent opportunity for anyone in the Knoxville area looking to be free from glasses.

Knox Wellness Introduces Extensive Esthetics Service Offering I N RESPONSE to growing

demand, Knox Wellness has introduced a complete line of esthetics services designed to suit a variety of needs. Known as the go-to practice for those looking for an alternative to the conventional medical approach, Knox Wellness has established itself as a practice that treats the “whole person,” drawing from several established disciplines – such as traditional medicine, osteopathic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, and massage therapy – in order to get to the root causes of patients’ issues. In the words of Dr. Chris Siano, Director of Knox Wellness, “Our goal is to help our patients look and feel their very best, from the inside out and the outside in! Building a competent, respected DiAnna Galloway, RN, BSN esthetics practice was the next logical step for us.” According to Dr. Siano, the natural aging process can change the bodies of men and women in several ways, including a loss of facial shape and definition (resulting in wrinkled skin), hormonal imbalances, loss of strength, and more. The esthetics services regimen of Knox Wellness is specifically tailored to combat these issues with treatments such as Botox® and Dysport, Restylane-L® and Perlane-L®, Juvederm®, Collagen PIN™, Micro Needling, and Teeth Whitening. As a part of the advancement into esthetics services, Knox Wellness is also pleased to announce the addition of DiAnna Galloway, RN, BSN, to their already highly skilled team. DiAnna is widely respected as an expert Nurse Injector and RN – with more than eight years of experience as a Nurse Injector and 26 as an RN – and is revered by her patients for her caring, relaxing approach to treatments. “When you like what you see in the mirror looking back, your smile comes from within!” said DiAnna. “Through Anti-Aging Esthetics, we work to turn back the hands of time.” Knox Wellness is currently accepting new patients. Understandably, that’s the question most frequently asked by our clients. The answer is yes. In fact, we’re so confident you’ll lose inches that you’ll pay nothing if your treatment doesn’t produce results. Here’s how the Strawberry procedure works. At the beginning of your first treatment, measurements are taken of your treatment area. Completely painless, the treatment requires only 20 minutes, during which time you can read, watch TV, or just relax. The unique Strawberry Laser works by safely expelling water, fatty acids, and glycerol from your fat cells, causing them to shrink and ultimately be carried out of your body in your urine. After your treatment, you can simply return to your normal activities. FDA approved, the Strawberry Laser will 22

Help the Hair, Heal the Heart T

HE MOST rewarding part of my

career is the gift to help a woman look and feel her best, especially when I help someone who is devastated by hair loss affecting every aspect of her life, from simple everyday activities to special events. Whether hair loss is temporary or permanent, our goal is to provide solutions. More than 46 million women in the U.S. experience hair loss. On average, we lose 100 hairs daily, and if not replaced, gradual thinning occurs. No matter the cause, it can be potentially devastating for a woman. Unfortunately, many women who experience hair loss have no known cause. If you observe someone without hair, you may immediately think they’ve had chemo. But there are many causes, including Cranial Radiation, Trichotillomania, Alopecia, Effluvium, scarring, and medication side effects. Bariatric bypass surgery or traumatic accidents can also cause significant hair loss. I’ve worked with women who are on their way to self-improvement while they strive to lose the desired body weight but now have another loss

Chronic Anogen Effluvium

Androgenetic Areata

of their hair. One such client flew to Knoxville every six weeks for nine months to maintain her “look” with Evolve Volumizer until her hair returned to normal. Few understand trichotillomania. It’s a desire to pull hair and is more prevalent in young women. Medical diagnosed hair loss also includes polycystic ovary syndrome, chronic telogen effluvium, hormonal imbalances, thyroid medications, burns, and scarring, and inherited thin hair can appear to most people as just very thin hair. Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune reaction where

groups of white blood cells attack hair follicles, results in random bald spots or impacts the entire head. Fortunately, Alopecians who’ve gone decades without a single hair can wear our specially designed wigs with Gripper caps and enjoy everything from ballroom dancing to jumping on a trampoline. Children can experience health and medical changes and lose hair. An Alopecia Areata client (age 11) said, “I just wish I could put my hair in a ponytail like my friends.” Her wish we were able to grant. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the different alternative hair options available for you to select from, all in the convenience and comfort of our private and secure studio staffed by our caring and compassionate professionals.

Meet Local Artist:

Chuck Schwaner C

Gallery on Main Featuring the Work of Area Artist

Chuck Schwaner

HUCK SCHWANER’S art career

first began when he started taking drawing lessons at the age of six. Later he would occasionally sketch for his own amusement but did not display his work, although family and friends encouraged him to do so. Girls, football, and all the other activities unique to being a teenager caused art of any form to take a hiatus. It was then that his best friend, who was running for high school student body president, asked him to do a series of campaign posters for him. His friend won the election by a landslide. It was on to GA Tech after high school, and his studies left no time for any extracurricular activities, including art. But Chuck did develop his creative skills, often using illustrations to convey his ideas and, not surprisingly, he excelled at mechanical drawing. The joy of marrying his high school sweetheart, college graduation, a rewarding career in business, and two wonderful children were the very centerpieces of Chuck’s life, so art took a backseat to family. That was until one day, after his kids were in college, he was admiring a painting on display at a festival when he thought to himself, “I can do that.” Perhaps a bit overoptimistic, the painting he felt inspired to paint fell far short of his expectations. But nonetheless, his long dormant interest in art had been reawakened. Chuck started painting with acrylics on canvas for several years, working evenings at home. One evening, when he had run out of canvas, he discovered a watercolor pad someone had given him earlier. Chuck made a wash out of acrylic paints to use like watercolors. Later Chuck began combining watercolors and acrylic washes, which evolved to all watercolor paintings, which is now his medium of choice. Drawing on his earlier artistic skills, while researching the techniques of many famous painters, in addition to reading many books on the subject, Chuck, now retired, began painting seriously two-and a-half years ago. Chuck’s work, along with the art of numerous area and regional artists, is now on display at the Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. An eclectic collection of art, including acrylics, watercolors, fabric, and handcrafted jewelry, Gallery on Main is the perfect holiday shopping venue for everybody on your shopping list this season.

Tim Tebow Named Speaker at Benefit Dinner

The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that Tim Tebow will be the speaker for the 10th Annual Benefit Dinner on June 25, 2016. Sponsorships, which include VIP passes and pictures with Tebow, personalized autographed items, as well as a wealth of advertising are now available. Tebow helped the Florida Gators win two BCS Championships and was named Heisman Trophy winner in 2007. Tebow was a first round draft pick with the Denver Broncos and led them to the playoffs in 2011. He also worked as a television analyst with the SEC Network. Tebow, the youngest of five children, was born on August 12, 1987, in Makati City in the Philippines to American parents who were there as Baptist missionaries. He was later homeschooled by his mother, who instilled in him the family’s Christian beliefs through his early years. Those beliefs became a large part of Tebow’s life. While active in charity work even in college, Tebow founded the Tim Tebow Foundation in 2010. The faith-based outreach group works with children in need in both the United States and the Philippines, building facilities for sick children, granting wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses, and building playrooms in hospitals and orphanages, among other far-reaching charitable works.

Entering Fall 2015

OW EXCITING to be

in the fun, fast-paced, and constantly changing world of fashion… a source of both enjoyment and challenges as we purge our closets of outdated styles and bring in the new! Fall and holiday 2015… elements reminiscent of the ‘70s… from feminine and classic styling (think Jackie O!) to Boho-chic (lacy and romantic), your fall season should be fun this year! Show a little shine during the day as you sport your “pleather” look, whether in a shiny legging or maybe a tiny bit of trim on a tunic top. Gaining in popularity over genuine leather in the fashion world, liquid leather is hardly recognizable over the “real thing!” The cardigan reigns this season! Open slouchy cocoon, oversized easily cascading pieces that may be fringed or not… some looks are subtle, while others may be extremely artsy, but all give the versatility of the cardi! And sweaters! How can you not love the season of the sweater? They may have varied shapes, but all have one thing in common… snuggly sensuality! Push that wimpy little lightweight sweater to the back of your closet this season and move the cozy, oversized

silhouette to the front! Pair it with a skinny jean or legging tucked into a tall boot, or perhaps one of the fabulous short booties that are showing up everywhere this season, and you’re right on target! Bold statement jewelry and up-to-date makeup are the finishing touches. Our arT by fisher jewelry collection is designed by our very own Renee Fisher, and each piece is one of a kind. CHRIS TOMLIN

Adore Christmas Tour December 5 • 8 pm • Tennessee Theatre Some artists enter the studio determined to make a radical departure from who and what they are or indulge some musical flavor of the month in a bid to expand the fan base. In either event, those strategies often backfire – though in staying true to his calling, GRAMMY® winner Chris Tomlin thinks not of popularity, but rather the populace his music can touch and encourage. “I’m not trying to make a different kind of record,” says Tomlin of his latest effort, Love Ran Red. “It’s still the same path I started down: Writing songs for the church, songs people can sing, songs that connect with people in their heart and move them in a way only songs can. That’s not changed – and yet this collection I feel is the strongest I’ve ever done.” That’s setting the bar quite high for his 10th studio recording, given that his last effort, Burning Lights, kicked off 2013 as a number one album. It also led to sold-out tour dates, Billboard Music Awards, being named a BMI

Songwriter of the Year, and receiving the K-LOVE Fan Award for Male Vocalist of the Year and Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year. Love Ran Red picks up where its predecessor left off. True to its title, it expresses beatingheart faith and channels love’s ceaseless flow into a dozen songs to get the blood pumping and spirits soaring and strikes stirring tones of hope, praise, and the peace found only in God’s presence.

Building Consultation 101: Be Prepared Before You Sign

A

RE YOU CONSIDERING building your next home? Building a home is a series of large and small decisions one after the other until you want to cry. I’ve compiled a list of my top five considerations prior to signing. 1. Price per square foot is an arbitrary figure that shouldn’t be the basis of your contract. It’s a meaningless and fool hearty evaluation of the cost to build. Much of the cost to build is contained in things such as footers and framing. For example, it will cost you more to build a ranch than it will to build a two-story home. The footprint on a ranch style floor plan is significantly wider than a two-story increasing the allowance for concrete and lumber. 2. A builder’s quote without a full set of builder plans is merely a guesstimate. Purchasing your floor plan or meeting with an architect upfront is a worthwhile investment. A builder will be able to provide a detailed quote disclosing the fixed costs of items such as concrete, lumber, and roofing. This is baring the standard builder clause for the unknowns in excavating, such as rock. 3. Ask if there’s an architectural review for the neighborhood. If there is, what are the fees attached to the process? What does the subdivision require? For example, are vinyl windows allowed or must they be aluminum clad? This requirement alone could add as much as $10,000 in cost. 4. Ask how they handle change orders. Is there a fee applied towards change orders? Is the cost of the change order applied when the materials are ordered or paid at closing? 5. Hire a home inspector. Most home inspectors offer a bundled inspection service when building a home. Buyers often decline the opportunity to conduct a home inspection because the builder offers a one-year home warranty on workmanship and structure. Some construction defects such as broken roof trusses, organic growth on crawl space framing, and disconnections in the ducting to the heat and air conditioning unit are hard to detect unless there was an inspection during the earlier phases of construction when more of the house is visible. Are you overwhelmed at the thought of building? You don’t need to make these decisions on your own. Call us for a free home building consultation. Kitchen Trends to Look for in 2016 WHETHER YOU are focused on resell-

ing, revamping, or building, it is important to keep an eye on up-and-coming kitchen cabinet trends. The perfect combination of trendiness and timelessness will keep your renovation up to date and get you the most bang for your buck. So what styles can you watch out for in 2016? The white shaker cabinet is one of the oldest styles of cabinetry, which makes it inherently timeless. 2015 boasted a slew of colorful cabinetry, red or green islands with cream wall cabinets, but 2016 is going to shift back to the farmhouse. White shaker cabinetry with rustic accents is the finish palette that is going to make a big appearance. Another style to recognize is the neutral palette. Combining grays, whites, and neutrals, this palette adds a bit of warm sophistication to the contemporary kitchen. Gray cabinetry has just started to peek into Knoxville kitchen trends. One popular combination that we will see more of in up-and-coming years is a gray island, white shaker cabinetry along the perimeter, and a neutral backsplash. Bring in

the fun colors with some festive plates and colorful appliances. Not a fan of painted cabinetry? Stained cabinetry will a lways be in style, and 2016 will showcase a walnut stain. Walnut is a beautiful color, it is natural and can be molded into several different design trends. Make it look more contemporary by pairing it with the grays, creams, and neutrals, or go more traditional with leather accents, beiges, reds, and oil rubbed bronze hardware. Speaking of hardware, 2016 is the year of mixed metals. It is more than okay to have a stainless steel sink, satin nickel faucet, and oil rubbed bronze hardware. Go a little crazy and throw a copper colored pendant over the island! All of this paired with a wonderful

walnut stained cabinet or white shaker will create a luxurious and upscale space. Shae Design Studio has several lines of cabinetry that fit any budget and any design style. Stop by and take a look at some of our newest cabinet samples, and learn more about design trends for the upcoming year.

Surgeon General’s Warning: Radon Causes Lung Cancer!

D

ON’T RISK exposing yourself and

your family to radon! Instead leave it to the professionals at Dayton’s to help keep your family safe from this dangerous carcinogen. Dayton’s technicians have completed extensive training on how to properly identify radon and install mitigation systems that comply with the radon industry’s best practices for quality solutions. Did you know that you can’t see, smell, or taste radon? Some surprising statistics are that exposure to radon kills more people annually than drunk driving, and it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States! The U.S. Surgeon General and Environmental Protection Agency strongly recommend that all homes be tested for radon. It’s an easy process, and any airborne threat is relatively simple to resolve if high levels of radon are detected. Radon originates in the ground’s soil and rocks, rising to the surface through the path of least resistance. It can be found in new or old homes, drafty or well-sealed homes, and homes with and without basements.

Test your house now and receive $25 OFF a professional radon test ($150 list price) and $50 OFF radon mitigation. Call Dayton’s today! Dayton’s Pest Control

Why They Should Come With a Warning WHY DO ORIENTAL RUGS,

which are known for their longevity and durability, require special handling when cleaning? These hand-crafted pieces of art continue to be manufactured by hand in much of the same way they have been for more centuries. When properly cared for, these heirlooms, which are crafted using durable, all-natural fibers including wool and cotton, will generally appreciate in value over time and can be shared with future generations to enjoy. But these same natural and organic materials, including dyes, make these otherwise durable and long lasting treasures potentially prone to permanent and usually irreversible damage. While searching for ways to clean their rugs, Oriental rug owners often turn to the Internet for advice. While some suggestions are indeed valid, others can lead to disastrous results. Some rug owners have actually been encouraged to use the same cleaning process used to clean their wall-towall carpeting. Others have been encouraged to wash their rugs on the family driveway. Just imagine the damage that will result when moving a wet Oriental rug over an abrasive concrete surface. The only way to properly clean an Oriental rug is to wash it in a special, climate controlled facility with specially treated water that is pH balanced and to use soaps that are specifically designed to clean and protect these priceless rugs. With nearly 30 years of rug washing and carpet cleaning experience, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has created a one-of-a-kind, highly specialized, climate controlled facility that uses our proprietary processes to safely and correctly wash your family’s Oriental rugs. From ionized water and pH control to special submersion baths and drying chambers, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is East Tennessee’s first choice for Oriental rug washing. We even have a special process for the removal of pet urine, which can often be successfully removed. With the holiday season quickly approaching, it’s time to wash your fine Oriental rugs and your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting and upholstery before your guests arrive. So why not call us today? Trust the name that has earned a reputation for quality: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

Planning the Perfect Pantry ONCE USED

just to store food, today’s pantries, whether a walk- or reach-in, are designed to be used as a multipurpose area for food prep, a morning coffee station or self-serve beverage bar, and wine storage. If you’re planning your pantry for a renovation or new home, there are several important ideas to keep in mind: Design doors that open out – Adding a door that opens into the pantry greatly minimizes valuable storage space. Opt for a door that swings out. Include electrical outlets – There are a number of small appliances you may want to use in the pantry. Even if you don’t plan to include any outlets, you never know what you’ll want in the future, and at that point it’s not easy to add them. Allow for walking space – The temptation is to design for minimum aisle space and maximum storage. This is always a mistake. The minimum walkway or aisle width should be 34”. Unloading groceries in too narrow of an aisle may make you feel like a contortionist. Include a counter – If you have the space, include a countertop to set bags of groceries on while they are being loaded into the pantry. This area should be at least 15” wide. Choose good lighting – It doesn’t have to be expensive, just functional. Without proper lighting, you’ll lose cans of peas and soup on the back shelf. Plan on adjustable shelving – Altering the height of your shelves will accommodate various sizes of food products and small appliances. Make sure the shelves are not too deep and that you can see everything at once by placing smaller items at the front and larger items at the back. Include special storage features – Using narrow cubbies for large platters, spice or wine racks, pull-out wire baskets for root vegetables, and other storage compartments are ideal for awkward items that are hard to stack. With preplanning, you’ll be surprised at the storage space, no matter the size of your pantry.

Getting Your Home Ready for the Holidays O

UR BEST family friends are “all

about” the holidays. From September through Christmas, their home is the centerpiece of seasonal activity and family and friend gatherings. Holiday décor transforms their home as each holiday unfolds. The aroma when you walk through the door is nostalgic of grandma’s cookies and peppermint sticks. You just WANT to be there sharing in their lives because of their love, but also because their home is such a welcoming oasis in the hustle and bustle of the season. If you are like our friends, there is no doubt you are also in full holiday swing. With Thanksgiving around the corner, now is the time to revive your home’s appearance and get it completely ready for family and guests to feel welcome and special. If it’s been a while since your tile and grout has had a deep cleaning, you may need help with the hard surfaces in the kitchen, bathrooms,

and even the sidewalks and outdoor living areas. If carpets haven’t been cleaned in a while, you may need a restoration cleaning instead of the traditional surface steam cleaning you may be accustomed to. A truly deep down clean home inspires positive interaction

and just makes you feel good. Who couldn’t use more CO-OWNER of that? Once your home John has been deep- Fitzwilliam down cleaned, you will be inspired to keep it that way. Of course it is easier to maintain a room that is clean and sanitized than to start from scratch. If you opt to use our professional sealer on your hard surfaces, cleanup from then on will be a snap. All you will need is hot water and a microfiber pad! To inquire about deep cleaning tile and grout, restoration cleaning, or how to care for all your outdoor surfaces, call John at Surface Doc at 865-567-1986 or visit www.SurfaceDoc.com.

resurfacing industry with more than 20 years experience, Ethos Concrete Solutions offers home and business owners a cost-effective solution for decorative concrete resurfacing, custom coatings, custom flooring, concrete rejuvenation, and concrete maintenance and protection. If you’re tired of that dingy, gray, oil-stained garage floor, Ethos Concrete Solutions offers a decorative epoxy floor coating that provides the durability and stain resistance that simply isn’t available in the DIY sections of the big box stores. Available in a near limitless choice of colors, designs, and patterns, Ethos Concrete Solutions only uses industrial grade coatings and professional grade surface preparation equipment to ensure a level of adhesion that you can’t achieve with the “handyman” alternative. Ethos Concrete Solutions also offers a variety of other concrete rejuvenation and protection services as well. If your once beautiful driveway, walkways, and patios have that tired and worn out look, you might not be aware that these surfaces require routine maintenance. You might not only be able to restore that like-new appearance your concrete once had, but you might also be able to change colors. Are your home’s concrete surfaces properly sealed? If not, the surfaces are little more than big, hard sponges that absorb moisture. Because moisture expands up to 9% when frozen, your concrete surfaces can become permanently damaged unless they are routinely cleaned and sealed. Another exciting service offered by Ethos Concrete Solutions is concrete saving that results in a rich variegated and translucent look, such as a time worn patina. Luxurious and durable, there are concrete options available to you when enhancing your home’s and business’s concrete surfaces. how we feel. You have a vision. You act on it. You make a huge investment. You pour your lives into your dream. You’re confident, but yet you’re anxious. Could you have possibly forgotten or overlooked something? This expresses all of our sentiments leading up to the October 1st opening of the all-new, and some may say super-sized, Consign To Design showroom located at 9329 Kingston Pike in the Market Place Shopping Center. It’s the same center where The Home Depot is located and is near Cedar Bluff. Behind the scenes, as you might have imagined, things were hectic. But oh will you love the final results! Customers have simply been amazed. Our new showroom, which by itself is amazing, features nearly four times as much furniture, home decor items, art, Oriental rugs, China, and seasonal items as our former location. And the results speak for themselves. Sales are much higher than even we had anticipated, and we are working as quickly as we can to fill all the open spaces created by these robust sales. This is great news for both our consignors and customers alike as our new location

thought of building a new home can agree with one thing: the process can be dauntless, requiring hundreds of key decisions that will ultimately determine how satisfied you are with your home. Should you have more cabinets or less? A large front porch or save the outdoor space for the lanai on the back of the house? A separate dining area or an open floor plan that includes kitchen, dining, and living areas combined? Can a utility room also serve as a grooming area for pets? Should you consider adding smarthome technology to your house? If your goal is to build a home that you and all members of your family will love well into the future, you’ll need a little guidance to get you there. The key to building a house you won’t regret coming home to lies with your builder. Luxe Homes & Design helps you from start to finish, each step of the way, by showing you how to get exactly what you want at the best possible price. With surprising precision, they can help you perceive room flow, lighting, space, and an assortment of details that most homeowners can be oblivious to. First and most importantly, compile a detailed list of what you want to build. Don’t focus on the size but what rooms you’ll need and how you’ll use them. Think in terms of who (and how many people) will use the room and the furniture you envision in the room. Eliminate all of the things you think you should add because “every house has them” but you’ll never use. Formal living rooms, dining rooms, and large bathtubs frequently fall into this category. Large “glamour” baths photograph well but don’t make it any easier to get ready in the morning. Look for rooms that can serve dual uses. If you only use your dining room for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, maybe that space could be an office for the other 363 days of the year, and the dining table, sans extra leaves, could be the desk. November in the Garden I

SAT DOWN to write this

and can’t believe I’m writing about November. Where has this year gone? I guess it is like they say: Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer to the end you get, the faster it goes! I love this time of year, however, so I’m going to make every effort to slow down and enjoy it. I want all of November to be a month of Thanksgiving. While we are all enjoying the month, there are a lot of things that you can do in your yard: » You can continue to plant trees and shrubs right up until the ground freezes. Some years it never does. The cool, moist soil is a great place for roots to get established while the plants aren’t trying to grow or bloom. This is also true for perennials. » You can still plant pansies and violas. Bite the bullet and pull up your annuals even if they are still pretty, and get the pansies planted while the ground is still fairly warm. Hollow stemmed plants such as begonias and impatiens turn to mush if they freeze,

and it is a much more difficult task to remove them if they are goo. » Container plants will keep your house welcoming during the fall and winter holidays. There are many wonderful options to choose from, and we will be happy to help you create something beautiful. Make sure your containers are frost and freeze proof! Foams, heavy plastic, composite, and good quality ceramics are safe if placed on pot feet or risers to allow air flow. Terra cotta and lower quality ceramics will not survive freezing temperatures. If you can’t/don’t want to keep your containers out during the winter, dump the old soil into your flower beds to add nutrients. » Weeds will continue to rear their annoying little heads throughout the fall and winter. Keep pulling or spraying, and continue applying pre-emergent herbicides. If you are spraying, make sure you read the directions on the package, because most herbicides are ineffective below specific

temperatures. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your outlook), hand weeding can be done year-round. » Perennial gardens will need a little attention once we have had a couple of hard frosts or a freeze. Attractive perennials, evergreen perennials, and grasses can be left alone or given a gentle shaping. Perennials with nice seed heads can be left for the birds to eat. Other perennials may be cut down to the ground unless they have a “rosette” of green at the base, which should be left alone. If your plants had fungus or insect problems, however, remove the stalks and dispose of them. You don’t want the problem to overwinter and start up again next year. » Mulch if you haven’t this year. Mulch protects plants from the winter freeze/thaw cycles. If you are not applying new mulch, fluff your old mulch with a rake or hoe. If you are mulching your perennial beds, don’t bury the crown (the layer right above the soil) of the plant, as that can cause crown rot. » It is time to get the leaves off your lawn. If you don’t have many trees, just mow over the leaves. The clippings will help fertilize and protect the grass. You should still be able to see the blades of grass, however, or your lawn can suffocate. If you have lots of trees and your yard would be buried under three feet of leaves if you didn’t rake, get started. » Don’t forget about the birds! Keep your feeders filled and clean. Please remember to use a high quality bird food. If 75% of your “bargain” bag is junk that ends up on the ground, it is no bargain. You will also need to clean and bring in glass or ceramic birdbaths. Metal and plastic ones can be left out year-round. » Winterize your fountains and water features soon. Drain fountains and place absorbent material in the basins. Cover with a fountain cover or tarp. Also, remember that glass gazing balls, glass rain gauges, and anything else glass should be brought inside if our temperatures drop below freezing. » The countdown to the holidays has begun! Don’t forget that Meadow View is a great source for Poinsettias, cut Frasier Firs, wreaths, and greenery, as well as ornaments and gifts. If you are not on our email list, you may want to sign up for it so you get advance notice on sales and events. Don’t forget you can also ask us questions at hello@meadowviewgreenhouse.com, or call us at 865-986-7229. Now go on out and enjoy November!

NEW Christmas experience awaits

guests planning their holiday visit to Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge. Earlier in the year, the dinner attraction unveiled a completely new look and treated guests to a new adventure. This winter those all-new sights and sounds will dazzle guests, providing a holiday experience unlike any before. The Christmas at Dixie show schedule kicks off on November 3rd and runs through January 2, 2016. “I’m more excited than ever for Christmas and can’t wait to share our new adventure with everyone,” said Dolly. “Thanks to all of the exciting changes we’ve made, we hope this year’s Christmas show will leave our guests with more Christmas spirit than ever before.” Highlights of the $2.5 million renovation include all-new lighting, state-of-the-art special effects, and an expansive wall of 12.5 million LED bulbs. This video wall backdrop transports guests from one Christmas scene to another thanks to seamless and state-ofthe-art technology. “Our creative team is already in the Christmas spirit, hard at work combining our new and advanced technical elements with the timeless Christmas traditions our guests have grown to love,” said Woody Peek,

spokesperson for Dixie Stampede. “The Dixie Stampede facility will also feature new exterior décor, amplifying our already spectacular Christmas display.” The 35,000 square foot arena will also be transformed into a LIVE Nativity scene, reminding guests of the reason for the season, as Mary and Joseph watch over their newborn child, Jesus, while wise men riding atop camels are led to the stable by a bright and

shining star. Guests will also be amazed as toys are brought to life by the Sugar Plum Fairy, before a visit from Santa himself, arriving in a horsedrawn sleigh. The Christmas at Dixie cast, including 32 magnificent horses, will take guests on a nostalgic holiday trip with a friendly North Pole-South Pole rivalry. Known as “The Most Fun Place To Eat In The Smokies®,” guests will enjoy a fourcourse holiday feast, featuring Dixie Stampede’s original creamy vegetable soup, homemade biscuit, whole rotisserie chicken, hickory smoked barbecued pork loin, corn on the cob, an herb-basted potato, and specialty dessert. Did You Fully Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Year?

I

A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com

F YOUR HOME wasn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely no. Flying and biting insects can turn outdoor family gatherings into a nightmare, forcing you back indoors. But there’s a solution that can transform your outdoor living spaces into bugfree spaces for next season. Growing numbers of homeowners are creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof, but flying and biting insects can prevent homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote your outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow you to extend the time that you, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to provide a seamless transition with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. Now is the perfect time to install retractable screens on your home to take full advantage of our beautiful Tennessee autumn and to be prepared for all of your outdoor activities in the new year. It’s a Christmas gift the entire family will enjoy all year-round. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Beth Hart T

O SAY THAT BETH HART is

one of the most amazing new female singer-songwriters of the new millennia would be an understatement. Beth was discovered in the ‘90s while performing on the streets of L.A. by David Wolf, who became her close friend and manager. He managed to land her a record deal with Atlantic in a matter of weeks. Her talent has landed her on TV (performing as well as her songs being used on shows) and even in front of our current president (along with the iconic Jeff Beck). Because of her openness about her battles with booze, drugs, bad relationships, and being bi-polar, Beth has inspired many to fight the good fight against their own personal demons. In my interview with Joe Bonamassa last month (who is performing at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium on November 14th), he said this about Beth. “I think Beth is probably the most naturally talented singer and musician that I’ve ever been on stage with. She has such a wonderful sense of timing and phasing, vocally, and has an infinite capability, vocally. She commands attention. There are some people who can really sing. They stand up there and sing. She stomps up there and she takes control of the stage. You can’t teach that kind of stage power and that presence. She’s a very, very, very special individual, and I’m very proud of the records that I’ve made with her.” 56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2015

I was recently afforded an opportunity to chat with her about her latest CD, Better Than Home, the title song of which is truly soul stirring. Beth shared with me the story behind it and how it impacted fans. “It’s really standing before God and what I see as spiritual healing and something that looks over me and guiding me and having the courage to say, ‘This is what I want for my life.’ I think it’s hard when you have such low self-esteem to say, ‘This is what I really want for my life’ because you feel like you don’t deserve it. So Better Than Home is getting to that place where you realize, despite my insecurities, despite my warped thinking, I absolutely deserve to have everything that I’ve ever wanted: Love and health and being able to be responsible for myself and letting go of feeling sorry for myself. “What I did, though, when I wrote it was I made it about the road so, that way, I wouldn’t have to explain that personal thing that I add to the song, but I could use the road as an example. What the road means to me is just getting out of your house. It doesn’t necessarily have to be singing and doing a show. It just means getting out of where you’re hiding from and experiencing life again. And THAT is better than home – better than hiding.” In addition to what she had shared earlier, Beth shared what else is on her radar for the next year. “Well, you know, what I decided is doing

nine months on the road a year is just too much,” she said. “It’s getting in the way of my relationships with family, with friends, with being able to be a wife to my husband, and it’s getting in the way of writing. Even though I work with my husband on the road, it’s still all about the Beth Hart Show. At home, I want to be able to cook for him and go to the beach and ride bikes with him. “I was telling this to my manager recently. I was saying as a writer, I’m not going to write about airplanes and hotels. I gotta write about real life, and in order to write about real life, I have to be connected to real life. “So I think what’s on the focus for me is, like, seven months out of the year on the road, living a real life and being able to write from that place. Being really healthy. Really balanced. I’m 43 now. This is the time where you’ve really got to take care of yourself if you want to live to be old, and I want to live to be old! I want to have a long life. I want to be able to be there to take care of my husband when he gets really old the way he’s taken such amazing care of me through all my difficulties. So I’m kinda reprioritizing things, and I think it’s a good thing! I feel really good about that.” If Beth’s future is as full of life as she sounded during our call, then, happily, we should be hearing from this beautiful and amazingly talented woman for many years to come... and that’s a wonderful thing. Elevated Ideals: Morristown’s Historic Sidewalks in the Sky

I

N THE 1960S, Urban

Renewal practices were common across the country as a means of economic reinvigoration. Downtown revitalization efforts often utilized federal funds for construction of new highways, and city centers were “re-vamped” to entice consumers and businesses. Historic commercial districts often saw changes such as new traffic patterns, façade improvements, and other urban planning innovations. The degree to which these changes improved a city’s economic vitality varies widely, though it is undeniable that this era of urbanization had a significant lasting impact that shaped the core of our communities. The City of Morristown, centrally located in Hamblen County, Tennessee, is one of the best local communities to visit and still displays notable and historically significant changes from the time of 1960s urbanism. At the heart of the city is Main Street, part of an old crossroads where a trade route between Knoxville and Baltimore intersected with a buffalo migration route along the Powell River. Like many cities in the U.S., Main Street witnessed both transformation during the 1960s and the lasting impact those changes have had on the local economy and overall functionality of the city. Unlike other cities, Morristown’s Main Street retains a unique structural remnant of these urban planning ideals, an elevated sidewalk system called the “Skymart.” Local architect and visionary Hubert Bebb (1903-1984) designed the innovative Skymart, which was modeled after a 13th century example from Chester, England (no longer in existence). Bebb was involved in several other mid-century modernist community planning projects and building designs in the region, including Gatlinburg’s redevelopment during the 1950s and the Clingman’s Dome viewing tower in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He also contributed designs to the 1933 Chicago and 1982 Knoxville World’s Fair Expositions. Bebb highly valued the connection between design and community, making use of regional materials and novel architectural concepts. Although the elevated sidewalk system borrowed from an earlier form, Morristown’s Skymart quickly became recognized nationally as a new-fangled, “must-see” attraction. It took three years to construct the concrete 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2015

overhead sidewalks along both the north and south sides of Main Street. Connecting legs traversed the main thoroughfare for ease of access to second story offices and businesses. Completed in 1967 as part of a $5 million city urban renewal initiative, the Skymart had advanced features for the time, including an integrated speaker system and planters that were designed to make the area more attractive and pleasant for visitors. Functionally speaking, the structure allowed uninhibited movement of pedestrians, effectively creating a second Main Street at the upper level and providing a permanent canopy to protect foot traffic at street level. This was the ultimate “elevated” shopping experience. When the Skymart finally opened, it garnered worldwide publicity as the only one of its kind in the United States. Morristown held a three-day grand opening celebration and parade event from May 4-6, 1967, which included performances by celebrity guests such as Dolly Parton, Porter Waggoner, and Tex Ritter. Publicity shots were taken, including photos that feature pedestrians using the upper walkways, band performances above Main Street, and one memorable shot of a Volkswagen Bug convertible parked on the upper level, its passengers watering one of the many planters. The Skymart was a highly promoted and welcome addition to the Morristown Main Street of the 1960s. However, it brought with it significant and often permanent changes

to the district it was intended to connect. Since the structure was designed to provide ease of access to second story merchants and offices, many historic building façades were altered at this time to allow for connection to the Skymart and modern storefront improvements. These alterations included new aluminum doors and display windows, modified building entrances at both levels, and obscured features (i.e. transoms) or entire façades, seemingly outdated elements that were covered in metal cladding or similar materials. In the recent past, there have been discussions about the significance of the district for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and a nomination has recently been drafted (the original submitted but subsequently rejected in the early 1990s). Some have wanted the Skymart removed and view it as an eyesore that detracts from the aesthetics of the downtown commercial district. However, the Skymart and consequent building alterations have become historic features of the area, the sidewalk system itself considered an integral part of the district. Removal of the system would cause great harm to the buildings and would mean the loss of a truly unique regional, and perhaps national, treasure. Much like the beautiful Victorian-era houses that were once considered unfashionable and worthy of demolition, it is important to step back and see the value of the Skymart as a piece of historic architecture and what it signifies in the grand scheme. The Skymart illustrates this principle without question, and though some of the novelty factor has worn off, the importance of recognizing and preserving this rare form will only continue to grow with time.

Florida Vacation Ideas to Make Everyone Happy

P

LANNING A VACATION can be

one of the most stressful and vacationdemanding activities you can take on – especially if you have kids. With everyone clamoring to do something different, finding the perfect spot can feel impossible. The simple solution is to choose a vacation destination that has something for everyone. How does one reach this theoretical vacation utopia? Head to Central Florida (and no, we’re not talking about Disney – yet). We’re talking about Polk County, which sits smartly in the middle of the state, connecting you and your family to every “Florida” thing under the sun. Beaches, golf, theme parks, watersports – if you’ve seen it on a postcard, you can do it from Polk County. On top of reaching epic crowdpleaser status, you’ll be able to do it all for less, without the traffic and tourist traps. Check out a few highlights from our “stay here, play everywhere” plan. For the person who wants to golf: Streamsong If you’re traveling with a golf enthusiast, do not leave Streamsong off your list. The resort boasts two courses considered masterpieces within the golf community: Breathtaking landscapes designed for beautiful walkability by renowned architects Bill Coore, Ben Crenshaw, and Tom Doak. Peppered with dramatic dunes, twisting fairways, and verdant greens, Streamsong offers two of the best links-style golf courses in the country, according to Golf Digest. Pro tip: Make a day of it. Treat yourself to an afternoon of self-renewal at the Acquapietra Spa, or add guided bass fishing and clay shooting to your day’s activities. For the child in everyone: LEGOLAND Florida Resort Did you know the largest LEGOLAND in the country is located in Winter Haven, Florida? More than 150 acres of this imagination-expanding theme park are waiting to be explored, featuring live shows, “pink-knuckle” roller coasters, a water park, and dozens of other attractions. Although the park is geared towards kids 2-12, there’s definite appeal to anyone who grew up with these iconic plastic bricks. Pro tip: For the full experience, spend a night at LEGOLAND’s new 152-room lakefront hotel. While parents relax, kids can work alongside Master Model Builders, hit the pool, 60

and hunt for treasure in their LEGO-themed rooms loaded with hidden surprises. Among other perks, you’ll beat the crowds with early admission to the park. For the water lovers: The Lakes (all 550+ of them) Central Florida has more than 135 square miles of lakes and a boatload of ways to enjoy them. Paddleboard through Winter Haven’s Chain, a family of sun-dappled lakes connected by a series of canals. Slice through swamp land in an airboat on Lake Kissimmee. Soar above the water on a gravity-defying flyboard. Looking for something more low key? Rent a pontoon boat, pack a picnic, and enjoy a sunset cruise. We could keep going. Pro tip: Anglers rejoice! Polk County is the Largemouth Bass Capital of the World. For those in search of gators: Circle B Bar Reserve The great thing about nature? It’s usually free to enjoy, which might sound extra appealing after a few days of $5 theme park waters. Walk, hike, or bike through nature trails encircling lakeside habitats and cypress groves. Alligators, otters, bald eagles, and marsh hares

are common sights, and the entire reserve is consistently recognized as one of the best birdwatching locales in the state. Pro tip: Ranked one of the Great Places to See Wildlife by USA Today, this place is a photographer’s dream. Want to know where the action is? Follow the telephoto lenses. As promised, everything else Rent a car and squeeze the most of your Sunshine State vacation. David Bromberg Quintet at the Bijou Theatre

LTHOUGH A bonafide legend

could be forgiven for wanting to coast a bit or ride off into the sunset, that’s not how this narrative goes. Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to re-introduce David Bromberg, the Godfather of Americana, and his latest album Only Slightly Mad, which was released by Appleseed Recordings in September 2014. You can tell a lot about a person from the company he keeps. When that company has included Bob Dylan, The Beastie Boys, George Harrison, Emmylou Harris, Doc Watson, John Hiatt, Jerry Garcia, Reverend Gary Davis, Dr. John, Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Mississippi John Hurt, you realize you’re dealing with a very special case. David was born in Philadelphia in 1945 and raised in Tarrytown, NY. “As a kid, I listened to rock ’n’ roll and whatever else was on the radio,” said David. “I discovered Pete Seeger and The Weavers and, through them, Reverend Gary Davis. I then discovered Big Bill Broonzy, who led me to Muddy Waters and the Chicago blues. This was more or less the same time I discovered Flatt and Scruggs, which led to Bill Monroe and Doc Watson.” David began studying guitar at age 13 and eventually enrolled in Columbia University as a musicology major. The Greenwich Village folk scene in the mid-’60s drew David to the downtown clubs and coffeehouses, where he could watch and learn from the best performers, including primary sources such as his inspiration and teacher, the Reverend Gary Davis. David’s sensitive and versatile approach to guitar playing earned him jobs playing the Village “basket houses” for tips, the occasional paying gig, and employment as a backing musician for Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Rosalie Sorrels, among others. He became a first-call, “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, ultimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan (New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan), Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, and Carly Simon. An unexpected and wildly successful solo spot for 600,000 concert-goers at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain led to a solo deal with Columbia Records, for whom David recorded four albums. His eponymous 1971 debut included “The Holdup,” a songwriting collaboration with former Beatle

THE DAVID BROMBERG BAND David Bromberg: guitar, vocals, mandolin, fiddle Mark Cosgrove: guitar, mandolin, vocals Robert ‘Butch’ Amoit: bass, vocals Nate Grower: fiddle, guitar, mandolin, vocals Josh Kanusky: drums, vocals George Harrison, who also played slide guitar on the track. David also met the Grateful Dead and wound up with four of their members playing on his next two albums. David’s material, based in the folk and blues idioms, continually expanded with each new album to encompass bluegrass, ragtime, country, and ethnic music, and his touring band grew apace. By the mid-’70s, the David Bromberg Big Band included horn players, a violinist, and several multi-instrumentalists, including David himself. Despite sold-out concerts and a string of acclaimed albums on the Fantasy label, David found himself exhausted by the logistics of the music business. He decided to change the direction of his life, so he dissolved his band in 1980, and he and his artist/musician wife, Nancy Josephson, moved from Northern California to Chicago, where David attended the Kenneth Warren School of Violin Making. Though he still toured periodically, the recordings slowed to a trickle and then stopped.

In 2002, after “too many Chicago winters,” David and Nancy were lured to Wilmington, Deleware, where they became part of the city’s artist-in-residence program and where David could establish David Bromberg Fine Violins, a retail store and repair shop for high quality instruments. Frequent participation in the city’s weekly jam sessions helped rekindle David’s desire to make music again, as did the encouragement of fellow musicians Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Desert Rose Band, Flying Burrito Brothers) and bluegrass wizard Herb Pedersen. With the release of the Grammy-nominated Try Me One More Time, his 2007 solo return to the studio, David continued his musical revitalization, playing shows on his own, with the David Bromberg Quartet, and reunions of the David Bromberg Big Band. In 2009, spurred by a suggestion from John Hiatt that he come to Hiatt’s Nashville studio to “mess around,” David came up with the idea for Use Me – an album featuring David with Hiatt and other friends like Levon Helm, Los Lobos, Tim O’Brien, Vince Gill, Widespread Panic, Dr. John, Keb’ Mo’, and Linda Ronstadt. Each guest artist either wrote or selected a song and then produced David’s interpretation of their suggested tune, thereby fulfilling David’s request to ‘Use Me’. Partially detailing the proceedings, filmmaker Beth Kruvant directed a compelling film documentary, “David Bromberg; Unsung Treasure,” which is currently circulating at U.S. and Canadian film festivals. In 2013, content with the balance of both his violin business and performing career, David was ready to record again with his live band. Enlisting old friend Larry Campbell (three-time Grammy-winning producer for Levon Helm and multi-instrumentalist with Bob Dylan) and engineer Justin Guip, David and his group entered Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY, in March 2013. Enlisting some of Helm’s former recording and touring musicians for added instrumentation, the David Bromberg Band emerged 12 days later with Only Slightly Mad, a return to his genre-bending albums of the ’70s and ’80s. Bromberg fans will find blues, bluegrass, gospel, folk, Irish fiddle tunes, pop, and English drinking songs happily coexisting as they can only on a Bromberg album. For newcomers, Only Slightly Mad will be an introduction to an astonishing performer whose range and musical depth have delighted devoted audiences for more than 40 years and will for many years hence. work reaches far beyond the boundaries of The University of Tennessee – it goes all the way to the other side of the world. The Fischer Professor of Innovative Learning is working with a group of students to provide clean drinking water to people in rural India through Procter & Gamble’s Children’s Safe Drinking Water program. Although the program has saved countless lives, Ernie can’t take all the credit. One of his students, Michael Van Dorselaer, has been working with the program for years. “Michael is the son of a former student, Tom Van Dorselaer,” said Ernie. “Tom recently left Proctor & Gamble after 25 years and is working for the Haslam Business School. He has been telling me about his son for a year and the great program that he has been working on. I encouraged Tom to have his son contact me when he started at UT, which he did this past August. “I think his program is great and a perfect fit for my service learning class,” Ernie

continued. “It is rather impressive that Michael started this all on his own and how he worked on it for four years throughout high school. He has accomplished a lot and, most importantly, has provided clean drinking water to 100,000 people in Africa.” Ernie earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State, his MBA from Colorado, and his Ph.D. from Ohio State. He says he’s been with UTK for a very long time, but he is “still quite young.” “I am very busy leading a class with 450 students and 12 business coaches,” said Ernie. “Plus, I meet weekly with my service learning team(s) to review progress and set goals, plus review their reflections. And, of course, I write a great deal.” Through the program, Proctor & Gamble has developed water-cleaning packets that identify bacteria and other disease-causing

They’re distributed to the people by missionary nuns in the area. The Children’s Safe Drinking Water first focused on Africa, and Ernie’s team is focusing on rural India. It is now partnering with Maharashtra Institute of Technology in Pune to distribute the water cleaning packets throughout India. A YouTube video showcases the team’s efforts at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=p1FXyfMxrZk. Ernie says his biggest challenge is finding enough time in the day. “But, really, I love what I do and do not count the time,” he said. “I just love the challenge.”

EW OF US, particularly small

business owners, will forget the “Great Recession.” It taught us many valuable lessons, including that this recession was very much different from past recessions. In fact, many Americans are still reeling from its aftermath. However, there’s no denying that areas of the economy have improved significantly and that most small business owners are experiencing the positive impact of this very slow economic recovery. Recently, however, there have been reports of reduced economic growth internationally with Chinese and European economies expanding at slower rates than originally forecasted, and we have begun experiencing significant volatility in our own equity markets. So just what does all that mean? Your guess is as good as mine. Even the experts can’t seem to agree. But one thing is for certain – people don’t like uncertainty. My biggest concern is those entrepreneurs

Business

The real question confronting small business owners during periods of uncertainty is whether they should remain on course or assume the worst and “pull back.” that responded slowly to the recession of 2007 may overreact to this current uncertainty. In other words, we risk overreacting, which could result in a renewed slowdown of our own making. If your small business is built on a solid economic foundation and is following a well-thought out marketing strategy for the future, you have very little to fear. In fact, I can name companies that actually prospered during the last recession while their competitors floundered and others failed altogether.

The real question confronting small business owners during periods of uncertainty is whether they should remain on course or assume the worst and “pull back.” There is very little evidence that those businesses that pulled back during the most recent recession prospered. If the recent uncertainty in today ’s marketplace has you wondering whether the other shoe is about to drop, your response to this uncertainty could produce unintended but far reaching consequences for your small business.

What Matters Most AS EXCITING as the holiday season is,

it’s equally stressful. There’s so much to do and often many places to go. Therefore, let’s go back to the basics on how to make it a season filled with joy. Recently I received a phone call and letter of encouragement. Neither asked for anything, nor did there appear to be any hidden agenda. After a difficult week, the two simple acts of kindness helped me push through and keep going. We all want to feel that what we do matters. Whether you’re a mom, dad, student, CEO, entrepreneur, or climbing the corporate ladder, it matters that we matter. That’s why, after a tough week, those two people lifted my spirits. One said, “I wanted to let you know that I read your magazine cover to cover. I can’t wait until the next one.” The other sent a handwritten note, “Thank you for doing this. Our town needs it.” As the publisher of a Christian magazine, this feedback makes all the effort worth it. Basically, what each said is, “What you are doing matters, keep it up. Thank you.” Web MD weighs in with research. “Thousands of years of literature talk about

the benefits of cultivating gratefulness as a virtue,” says University of California Davis psychology professor Robert Emmons. Throughout history, philosophers and religious leaders have extolled gratitude as a virtue that is integral to health and well-being. Making a mindset change is all about changing habits. » Quit complaining. Period. It’s never helped any situation get better, and it creates stress for those who have to listen to it. You won’t know how much you complain until you make a concerted effort to stop. Others will benefit, but you will feel as though a weight has been lifted. » Start complimenting. There’s nothing better for any relationship than to feel as though you matter. Words of encouragement. Compliments. Thank yous. Notes. Texts. Pictures. Physical acts of kindness. Random favors. Yes, November is about Thanksgiving. But being thankful isn’t enough. Celebrating a meal together isn’t enough. Living a thank you life should be a way of intentional living. However, it’s not about ignoring situations

that need to be addressed. That can be done in a productive process. See a problem, get a plan, find a solution, or accept it as is until you can change something else. Don’t just ramble about what’s wrong. Take proactive measures to address real issues. Successful people are those with successful habits. We are what we repeatedly do. Happiness and a spirit of excellence: They are not acts, they are habits. By taking control of our habits, we take control of our life. By changing our outlook, we ultimately change our outcomes. Making specific changes is the way to make adjustments in your life. This is one proven route that will illicit change immediately. Happy Thanksgiving! The “thank” is what matters most. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Preparation Guide for Hosting a Family Thanksgiving THE HOLIDAYS are a time for family and

memory making. If you’re planning to have your extended family over for Thanksgiving dinner, start planning now. If you start early, you’ll have a more enjoyable time visiting with your family when the big day arrives. November 1–7 » Spend a few days giving your home a deep cleaning, including curtains, carpets, windows, etc. so you’ll only have to do a few quick clean-ups prior to Thanksgiving. » Start decorating your home with festive Thanksgiving colors. Why wait until the last minute? If you decorate with your seasonal decorations early, you can enjoy them longer. » Clean out your refrigerator and freezer, as they will soon be filling up with food. Go ahead and throw away the stuff that’s accumulated since the summer. Make room for the turkey, and know if a guest peeks into your refrigerator, they won’t see dried jelly stuck to the door. November 8–14 » Calculate how many people will be eating Thanksgiving dinner at your home. Plan at least 1.5 pounds of turkey per guest, and then

write down your menu. If you’re cooking the turkey for everyone, don’t be afraid to request that your guests bring certain items, such as veggies, drinks, desserts, breads, paper products, and more. » Look through your cookware to make sure you have everything to cook your Thanksgiving dishes. Count your dishes to ensure that you’ll have enough plates, utensils, and glasses to serve everyone. » Make a preliminary shopping list. November 15–25 » Pull any recipes you may need. » Finalize your shopping list, and plan to shop around the 19th; however, items you’ll need to have fresh, such as produce, shouldn’t be bought until the last possible moment. » Clean out your coat closet so your guests will have room to store their belongings. » Look around your home to see if there is any last minute cleaning that needs to be done. » Plan where you’ll serve your meal. » If you have a frozen turkey, start the thawing out process as soon as you need to based upon the turkey’s size.

November 26: Happy Thanksgiving! » Start preparing things on your menu that can be made in advance, including cornbread for stuffing, pies, drinks, salads, veggies, etc. » Straighten up your home, and put away mail, magazines, and other things that have accumulated. » Make sure your bathroom is well stocked with necessities. » Depending on what time you’ll be having your Thanksgiving dinner, you may need to start cooking your turkey on the evening of the 25th. When Thanksgiving Day arrives, wake up knowing that the preparations you made during the past few weeks have paid off. All you’ll need to do now is prepare your last minute dishes and wait on your family to arrive. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Business Card Etiquette A S WE APPROACH a new year,

many of us have new and exciting goals for our businesses or career paths. In this competitive market that we find ourselves, we must realize that it’s the little things that often make a real difference in how we’re perceived and respected in the business arena. One universal area in business that Americans are less intrigued with is the business card. In America, we more or less view a business card as an item that gives us pertinent information for a colleague that saves us from having to enter their information into our phones. However, internationally, the business card means a lot more. Whether you do business here or across borders, let’s review basic business card etiquette to ensure we do our best to show respect to all cultures. Business cards are internationally recognized as a means of presenting personal contact details, so be sure all pertinent information is listed, and make sure you always have them with you. 66

A business card is a way of presenting who you are; therefore, invest in high-quality cards, and make sure you keep them in pristine condition. Using a card holder is a great way to show the value you place on the one you give away, as well as the one you receive. When accepting a business card outside of the United States, do so with both hands. Look at the information carefully, and comment on one or two pieces of information listed on the card. Thank the person who gave you the card, and allow them to see you place their card in your card holder. It’s not polite to just drop it in your pocket in some countries, so be sure you understand the expectation depending on where you are. In America, it’s not considered rude to place it in your pocket but would be respected if it was placed in a holder or wallet. If you’re traveling international where English is not the first language, then it’s polite to translate the other side of your card into the language of where you’re visiting and present the card with that side facing up. Depending on where you are does direct what

information is important to place on your card, so before you travel abroad, look up the specific business card etiquette for the country you’re visiting. For instance, some countries expect your degrees, or higher education, titles, company accreditations, etc., to be listed on the card. Take the time to understand what’s expected when doing business in a specific culture, and it will go a long way in being respected and trusted. There are some companies out there who print really cheap business cards, but realize that they usually look and feel as cheap as they are. Image matters in business. Your business card should reflect you. What message do you want to send?

Fat Reduction That Fits Before Liposonix

After Liposonix

ITH THE HOLIDAYS just

around the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our holiday attire. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other noninvasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas

of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered, for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the world wide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully

After SlimLipo to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
