JENNY BLALOCK'S talents as a general contractor, an

interior designer, and an entrepreneur led her to the founding of Luxe Homes & Design, an award-winning new home construction company. Now Jenny and her dad, Jim Blalock, have founded Plantation Reclaimed, a company that reclaims unique species of wood discovered in centuries-old tobacco barns, old abandoned barns, and warehouses and incorporates this antique wood into the dĂŠcor of both new and existing homes. Through Plantation Reclaimed, Jenny and her dad are working to "reclaim history one floor at a time."

HANKSGIVING DAY was always a flurry

of activity in our kitchen when I was growing up. My mother wanted everything to be picture perfect for the holiday dinner, and she and my grandmother were busy all day with preparations. The turkey was Photo by D. Roberts Photography stuffed and in the oven early, and the aroma of the cooking filled the house. My sister and I were in charge of setting the table. We had to be extra careful, because for holiday dinners, we used the special china, silver, crystal, and table linens. No paper napkins or plastic tablecloth for this dinner. My dad was in charge of carving the turkey and leading us in a Thanksgiving prayer. It was a special family time for all of us, and those memories come flooding back every time I look at that special set of china, which is now in my keeping. My mom and dad will not be a part

Our unique, antique wood comes from tobacco and abandoned barns and warehouses and other structures as much as 200 years old! Not only is it environmentally responsible to recycle antique lumber, but the character and unique patina of each piece of reclaimed wood, which occurs naturally over decades and centuries, just can’t be replicated. EK: Why is the use of reclaimed wood important for home and business owners wishing to create that one-of-a-kind appearance? Jenny: Using reclaimed wood in your home or office offers you that one-of-a-kind look that cannot be duplicated. Therefore, each floor, accent wall, or beam will never appear alike. November 18 • 5:30 – 8:15 pm Marble Springs State Historic Site

OIN US at Marble Springs for our fall nighttime viewing session. This session will be facilitated by Gary Noland, adjunct instructor of Astronomy at the University of Tennessee. Guests will meet at the cottage at 5:30 pm, where they will begin with a discussion about the origin of the Pleiades and its impact on early civilization. The stargazing will be from 6:15 to 8:15 pm, where guests will search the night sky for the Pleiades star cluster, as well as planets

that are visible during the fall months. Participation in our nighttime viewing sessions is a $1 donation per person. Guests are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. In the event of overcast skies, the discussion portion will still take place. All nighttime viewing sessions will take place at Marble Springs State Historic Site, located at 1220 W. Gov. you pull into your driveway, you feel relief because you’ve finally escaped the cranky co-workers, the deadlines, and traffic jams. Now you can spend the next few hours relaxing at home with your family. What better way to enjoy this time than with a delicious meal together? Sometimes the lingering stress can be hard to shake, especially if you’re in a rush to get dinner on the table. You can shed your stress and make this time together more meaningful. Consciously ease into the transition from work mode to family mode, and use these tips to make your evening meal more relaxing and mindful. 1. Take a breath. As soon as you get home, just take a few minutes and chill out. What you’ll want to do is shake off any lingering “fight or flight” stress response that’s making you feel tense and on edge. With deep breathing techniques – the kind that get your belly moving – you’ll lower your heart rate and feel much calmer. Sit in your favorite chair, soften your gaze, and start those long, drawn-out inhales and exhales, counting your breath if needed. The National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will comprise the exhibition in the Balcony Gallery of the beautifullyrestored Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street, from February 2-23, 2018. The Emporium is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. The deadline for entries to be received is Sunday, December 10. Dogs shed their fur naturally as their coat is replaced with new hair follicles. Most dogs go through a process called “blowing the coat” usually twice per year, completely replacing their fur in order to deal with changing temperatures, and brushing your dog’s fur can help reduce shedding. Brushing helps prevent bacterial buildup. As fur is shed, so are dead skin cells. If dead hair and skin cells are not removed, they get trapped in the deep layers of a dog’s fur. incredibly proud of Sevierville native, Dolly Parton. Her rise from extreme poverty to superstardom is the stuff of legends. This overwhelming success has allowed Dolly to give back – not only to her native Sevierville, but to the entire world. Her most notable way of doing this is through the Imagination Library that she founded to help stamp out child illiteracy. She’s funded this through her own donations, as well as through the donations of fans from around the world. Her latest donation is by way of her first-ever children’s album entitled “I Believe in You,” where the proceeds will go to the Imagination Library. Dolly recently shared the story behind the new CD and Imagination Library. The most poignant song on the CD is Chemo Hero, which is about pediatric cancer. It seemed very personal, so I asked if she could share the story behind it. “Yes, I can! When you do see the actual CD of the album, inside there’s a picture of two little girls kissing me on the cheek. They’re two of my little nieces. The one on the left is Hannah Dennison. She’s my sister, Rachel’s, daughter. When she was four years old, she got leukemia, and we almost lost her for years and years. “When she was sick, I wrote Chemo Hero and Brave Little Soldier for her and about her. At that time, I took a bunch of my little nieces and nephews and her friends and took them into the recording studio and recorded that and some other children’s songs and fun things for her to have a little tape to listen to 30

while she was recuperating. “The Brave Little Soldier was about that, too – children with other diseases. But Chemo Hero I thought was a perfect title, and I’m going to try to make something more of that. At some point, we may try to put that out as a single or, certainly, find all the chemo heroes with some of the children that have overcome the most – even some of the grownups that suffered that and won the battle.” With all that Ms. Parton does regarding illiteracy, it’s obvious that it is a subject near and dear to her heart. She shared why that is. “Well, it’s very important,” she said. “I think all children should be able to read. I actually started the Imagination Library more than 20 years ago in honor of my father who was never able to read or write. My dad got to help me with it, and he felt very proud of me to be doing that and to involve him in it. He got to live long enough to see it doing well. He got such a kick out of seeing people call me the book lady.” Dolly explained why it is important that she be such a strong advocate for children with the Imagination Library and her album. “There’s an old Whitney Houston song – speaking of Whitney Houston, who’s been good to me because of I’ll Always Love You – but there’s a song she had called Children Are Our Future. I loved that song, and I think that’s such a true statement. We have to teach the children, like that old song, Teach Your Children Well, and if you can teach them to read – even if they never have the money to further their education – they can find something, they can read up on anything they want

to know and learn it. “But it’s really a handicap if you can’t read. I really think that’s important, because I know how children need to have self-esteem, and that gives them confidence if they can do those little things. To put books into the hands of children – that’s the reason why we put their little name on it personally, so that they get these books in the mailbox with their name on it. They’re gonna wait there for the mail, or they’re gonna get home from wherever they’ve been and go to the mailbox to see if their little book is there. They have a sense of pride that makes them take some time. It’s important for children to have self-esteem and to know how to read and to feel important – that they can do something. “I know that my father couldn’t read and write like so many of my relatives because they were poor people – country people – had to work at home. One room schools and bad weather and all that. N O U R continuing e-Mailbag series, here are some new real-life questions and answers to share with you: Q: If I choose the lump sum pension option when I retire, is it taxable to me? A: Yes it is, if you withdraw it Yvonne Marsh, and don’t elect an IRA rollover. CFP®, CPA And, by the way, if you don’t want to risk losing the lump sum in the markets, an IRA pension annuity with a life insurance company may pay you a higher monthly income than your company would have, plus you keep control of the lump sum as a death benefit for your heirs. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime decision and well worth exploring all of your options. Q: My investment accounts have been going up the last several years, but I’m afraid of another market downturn like we had in 2008. Should I sell my investments and sit in cash for a while? A: Ah, the age-old debate between active investing (timing the market) versus strategic investing (buy and hold). Studies show that, over time, buy and hold strategies outperform active strategies. One analysis by BlackRock showed that $100,000 invested in the S&P 500 from 1997 to 2016 would have grown to $441,141. However, if the investor missed just five of the top performing days, they would only have $292,650. So how to mentally withstand the downturns and stay invested? (1) By holding a well-diversified portfolio that is invested within your risk tolerance and (2) by using a bucket strategy – grouping assets between “now,” “soon,” and “later” buckets. “Now” is the most conservative, “soon” is somewhat conservative, and “later” is more growth oriented. Q: I am going to be 65 and eligible for Medicare but I’m still working. Should I stay on my employer health plan or move to Medicare? A: You need to weigh not only the premium cost for each option, but also the deductibles and outof-pocket costs. Medicare generally has lower deductibles and costs, especially when paired with a Medicare supplement plan. It’s a complicated decision, so we have a Medicare specialist in our office to help people make those decisions. HAT A BEAUTIFUL falummer we are having! Yeah, I just made that word up because our fall has felt like summer so far. This is good news and bad news. It’s good because we’re getting to enjoy more days outside, but it’s bad because our plants are not “hardening off.” Hardening off occurs when we start getting those nice cool days and nights that tell plants it’s almost time to sleep for the winter. The plants don’t know that winter is coming, so they just keep growing. There isn’t anything we can do about the weather, so let’s move on to the chores we can do. » You can keep planting. Trees, shrubs, perennials, and pansies/violas can be planted as long as the ground isn’t frozen (which very rarely occurs). Let’s have a little refresher course on planting trees and shrubs: 1. Dig your hole twice as wide as your root ball but no deeper. 2. Mix the soil that comes out of the hole 50/50 with a good planting mix or soil conditioner. If your plants want acidic soil, add soil acidifier. 3. Loosen up the roots on your plant, and I do mean loosen them up! Stick your fingers or a trowel or something in

there and pull them apart! Once a root is the size of a pencil, the direction of growth has been set. If the plant is horribly rootbound, use a saw to remove the outer 1/2” or so. For ball and burlap p l a nt s, we n ow suggest you remove the burlap, because some growers are using synthetics that don’t decompose. You can leave the wire cage, but if you ever have to have that stump ground, the cage will destroy the grinder! 4. Place your plant into its hole and backfill with the soil mixture. Press the soil firmly around the root ball. 5. Water your plant well, and use a root stimulator to help feeder roots establish. 6. Continue watering any week that we do not get 1” of rainfall. 7. Apply mulch no more than 3” deep. Donuts, not volcanoes! Don’t pile mulch around the trunk or you will encourage disease, critters, and air roots. » If you haven’t done a good cleanup of your beds, do that now. Clear out

debris, and cut back dead or dying foliage on perennials. Remove annuals that are still in place, and replace them with pansies. Pull up weeds, and apply Preen or another pre-emergent. » Replace annuals in containers with pansies or evergreen foliage to get ready for the holidays. » Spray fruit trees with dormant oil spray after the leaves are gone. » Speaking of leaves, continue to remove them as they fall. A good alternative is to chop them up with your lawn mower and then use them as mulch around your plants. Decomposing leaves are wonderful for your soil! » Speaking of soil, fall is a good time to add compost and manure so they can break down and enrich your soil during the winter months. Let’s talk briefly about holiday plants. » If there is only one plant that you never buy from a box store, let it be a poinsettia. Frankly, most are doomed before you ever get them home. They are extremely temperamental, and the box store people have no idea how to treat them. Last year I saw about 25 very large poinsettias get loaded into the back of a pickup on a cold day. They were dead before the woman got to the exit. It’s downright tragic! Here are the poinsettia rules: 1. Do NOT expose them to temperatures below 45 degrees. As little as a minute in below freezing temps will turn them black. They are a tropical! 2. Do NOT buy them if they’re still in those plastic sleeves. They are very prone to fungal problems, which are multiplied when they’re in that little personal sauna. In addition, those sleeves camouflage damage. I’ve seen people remove the plastic and have every single branch fall off. 3. Do NOT let water sit in the foil wrap. Take the plant out of the wrap, water it in the sink, and let it drain, then put it back in the foil. If poinsettias sit in water, they will develop root rot. 4. Poinsettias are very fragile. If you bump them, the branches will break off. 5. No, they are not poisonous, but some people/animals will have a bad reaction if they eat them. Keep them out of the reach of pets, children, and drunk party goers. I’ll talk about other holiday plants next month. Don’t forget that we have family grown poinsettias, freshly cut Christmas trees and greenery from North Carolina, and lots of lovely items for decorating your home. Stop by and see us soon!

Delivering Flowers and Special Moments During the Holidays

and the holidays approach, many people dedicate their time and resources to those in need. For Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), the holiday season leads to the 9th annual Holiday Delivery initiative. Since the organization’s founding, dedicated volunteers have brought extra cheer by delivering poinsettia plants to patients in area healthcare facilities during the holiday season. In 2016, RAF delivered more than 600 poinsettias to patients in local healthcare facilities such as Parkwest Medical Center, UT Medical Center, Tennova Physicians Regional Medical Center, Turkey Creek Medical Center, Sherrill Hills Retirement Community, Morning Pointe of Powell, and River Oaks of Lenoir City. Volunteers and staff gather in December to collect and distribute poinsettias across our community. By spending just a few minutes with each recipient, volunteers are able to

The Holiday Delivery program is funded by generous sponsorships from local companies and families throughout Knoxville. A $10 donation sponsors one

Additionally, donations can be made in honor of someone special, and that person will receive a greeting from us informing them of the gift. K A L E has become a “must-have” for winter containers, and it’s becoming more common in garden centers. This stunning foliage plant came to my attention as part of a winter color display in the Chicago Botanic Garden, so that should tell you something about its ability to stand up to low temperatures. I’ve sought it out as one of the truly hardy winter cole crops. Cole crops include many staples among the cool-season vegetables – cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and greens such as kale, chard, turnip, mustard, or collards. Some are standards in cool-season vegetable gardens throughout Tennessee, and others have become part of the popular “ornamental edible” movement for their striking foliage, often seen combined with traditional winter pansies. It pays to be particular about which cole crops to use in winter seasonal color beds and containers. Some will take just a few degrees of frost, and a few can tolerate temperatures in the single digits. The “flowering cabbage” types of kale are among those that only

tolerate a few degrees of frost before turning to mush. Look for those that survive and flourish throughout the winter, such as dinosaur kale, or Russian kales such as winterbor. King among these survivors is redbor kale. Large, frilly, and dramatically deep purple, redbor kale has never shown a hint of suffering in the several winters I’ve enjoyed it in my pots in West Tennessee. Be aware that it will easily grow to two feet tall, though 30 inches is not uncommon, and each plant can be about that wide. So place accordingly in full sun or mostly sun. If the weather is warm enough for insects to still be active, redbor

kale should be monitored for pests common to cole crops. It’s my understanding that redbor kale is a truly delicious kale, with its sweetness enhanced by frost. So far, however, I have found myself unwilling to sacrifice the beautiful foliage. Perhaps this year I’ll give it a taste, as I saved seed from one in my pots when it bolted in the summer heat and have 50 small plants for my efforts. Seed is easily found online if the plants are not available in your area. Redbor kale can be seen on display at the UT Gardens locations in Jackson and Knoxville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. Festivities begin with Countdown to Light the Park, which is 5:30 to 7:00 pm on November 27. is a beautiful region that is rich with history and interesting places. Each year the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance recognizes outstanding persons, projects, and organizations working to preserve our heritage for future generations. This year our award winners are celebrated for their contributions to historic preservation, and we want to share their stories.

Tanner Store repairs

The Tanner Store in Wartburg has occupied a place of importance on the Courthouse Square since it was built in 1906 to house a bank. John Everett and Maude Williams Tanner purchased the building in 1923 and opened the Tanner Drug Store and Restaurant. It has remained in the Tanner family since that time and at one point was the oldest continuously run family business in Tennessee. Recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, the building had fallen into disrepair. The community of Wartburg has rallied to repair and stabilize the structure. Many volunteers have contributed time and/or money to restore the parapet and trim work, fix the leaky roof, and re-glaze windows. Artist Wendy Leedy from Bean Station uses her talent to help preserve Grainger County’s history. With 60 published calendars to her credit, her drawings of significant historic sites in the county have graced calendars for Citizens Bank and now the Grainger County Historic Society. The 2018 calendar features iconic local structures such as the National Register Nance House in Rutledge, the longabandoned Dotson School built in 1904, and the original Grainger County Courthouse that was destroyed in 1946. Senator Ken Yager has been a valued supporter of historic preservation in his district for many years. Most recently Senator Yager secured an appropriation of $100,000 for repairs to the Oliver Springs Depot. The landmark structure was featured on the 2017 East Tennessee Endangered Eight list. Built in the 1890s, the structure houses the community’s library and local history museum. The former 52-acre National Register District of Morristown College buildings 52

were demolished by the City of Morristown in 2016 to make way for a new public park. In an effort to preserve the history of the school, the Holston Methodist Conference and Morristown Diversity Task Force joined forces to produce a video highlighting images and stories from former students. The video is available on YouTube and has been shown at community events and civic club meetings. The Oak Grove School located in the Sharp’s Chapel community of Union County was featured on the East Tennessee Endangered Heritage list for many years. It Betty Bullen in Oak Grove School is one of only 30 remaining Rosenwald Schools in Tennessee. The two-room schoolhouse was built between 1917 and 1929 and served a variety of purposes until the early 1960s. In recent years, Preservation Union County has led efforts to restore the building. The grassroots effort has shown the power communities can have in preserving their historic structures. The school will become the home to Preservation Union County and serve as a hub for community activities. McKayla Floyd, an 18-year-old Sevierville Girl Scout, and some friends took the lead in cleaning up the long neglected Esslinger Cemetery on Douglas Dam Road. It started with making the grave of Revolutionary War soldier, William M. Robertson, accessible once again and grew from there. Upon hearing from the local American Legion that the condition of the cemetery made placing a flag on Robertson’s grave on Memorial Day impossible, McKayla sprang into action. The young preservationist recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy and earned her Girl Scout Gold Award from the Esslinger Cemetery project. The University of Tennessee’s Facilities Services Complex is an adaptive reuse of a 90,000 square foot industrial facility in Knoxville’s Marble City neighborhood. Once a nationally recognized marble-processing plant, the building now serves as the home of the University’s Facilities Services Department. Extant features like riveted steel framing, hardwood planking, and a silo were

maintained. The project has garnered awards from American School and University magazine and from the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Zack Taylor is a “genealogy detective” known for researching African-American history in Jefferson County. Zack took the lead and worked with A.M.E. Zion Church in New Market to restore the burial grounds there. It unveiled a portrait of New Market’s African-American history. Burial began in the cemetery in 1891 and includes the grave of a woman who witnessed the New Market Train Wreck of 1904 and another born into slavery in 1853. It is the final resting place of at least one Civil War soldier. Zack and other volunteers have cleared brush, positioned military markers, placed tombstones, and extensively researched the cemetery’s history.

Coal Creek Miner’s Museum

Barry Thacker and Carol Moore know about youth engagement and that understanding the stories of a community’s past can impact the people of today. What started as an idea to clean up Coal Creek to improve trout fishing grew into an expansive community initiative that engaged youth in new ways of discovering and preserving their history, including restoring Militia Hill, creating the Coal Creek Miner’s Museum and history trails, establishing historic markers and listing sites on the National Register. As founders of the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, Barry and Carol have provided multiple college scholarships to Rocky Top area students and reconnected them to their East Tennessee and Welsh heritage. Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Celebrates Local Musicians HE OAK RIDGE

Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Dan Allcott, continues its successful 73rd season with “Here’s a Riddle You Haven’t Heard” on Sunday, November 5, at 3 pm at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge. The concert will feature long-time Oak Ridge Symphony concertmaster, Karen Kartal, and WUOT Afternoon Concert host and bassoonist, Garrett McQueen. “The sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church is the acoustical gem of Oak Ridge,” said Allcott. “We invite the community to take advantage of the opportunity to hear our orchestra play music that perfectly suits the space. I am also delighted to feature two of our extremely talented local musicians, Karen Kartal and Garrett McQueen, on this program.” Violinist, Karen Kartal, will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending with the orchestra. Kartal began her violin studies at the age of nine. After living in Switzerland for three years, she returned to her home state to attended lllinois State University and Western Illinois University, followed by graduate studies at Louisiana State University. She won first prize in the concerto competitions at all three schools. In addition to full-time positions with the Shreveport and Knoxville Symphonies, Kartal has held the position of concertmaster of the Baton Rouge Opera and the Lake Charles Symphony, principal second with the Baton Rouge Symphony, and assistant concertmaster of the Louisiana Sy m p h o n i e tt a , Ma rs h a l l Sy m p h o ny, Longview Opera, and South Arkansas Symphony. As assistant concertmaster of the Classical Symphony in Chicago, she performed several concerts in Taiwan and Japan as part of their Far East Tour. Kartal has been concertmaster of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra since 2004. Bassoonist, Garrett McQueen, will perform Heitor Villa-Lobos’ The Riddle of Seven Notes with the orchestra. McQueen has been playing the bassoon in his hometown of Memphis and in venues across the country, including Los Angeles’ Disney Hall, Detroit’s Max M. Fischer Music Center, and New York’s Carnegie Hall, since 1999. He has performed 54

in multiple Broadway musicals in Memphis under the baton of David Spencer and keeps himself busy in other free-lance activities, including being featured in Indie Rock tracks produced by Goner Records (2009) and True Panther Sounds (2010). McQueen can be heard as the principal bassoonist on the Memphis Repertory Orchestra’s inaugural CD of works by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky and has appeared on television shows, including Oxygen’s Snapped: Killer Couples, TV One’s Fatal Attraction, and Fox’s Glee. His affinity for 20th and 21st century music drives his passion for playing the bassoon, and in a performance of Eric Ewazen’s “Concerto for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble,” Ewazen noted his “wonderful playing” and characterized McQueen as someone who “gives a great performance of his piece.” He’s also been noted as one of America’s “most interesting classical musicians” by conductor and author of “The Real Toscanini: Musicians Reveal the Maestro,” Cesare Civetta. The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra will also perform music by Giacomo Puccini, Henyrk Górecki, and Joseph Haydn’s delightful Symphony No. 6. Day Poster Contest is complete! Each year the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) National Veterans Outreach Office, in conjunction with the Veterans Day National Committee, publishes a commemorative Veterans Day poster. The poster is selected from artwork submitted by artists nationwide and is distributed to VA facilities, military installations around the world across cities and towns in our nation. It also serves as the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery. Throughout the years, these posters have illustrated the rich history of our country’s service men and women. The poster clearly reflects our pride and patriotism in saluting veterans while providing the thematic artistry for the year.

History of Veterans Day

World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 am. The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words: Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive,

sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twentyseven of our states have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday; therefore, be it resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring) that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday – a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen in the nation’s history, after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation,” which stated: “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select and which will coordinate at the national level

necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the government to assist the National Committee in every way possible.” On that same day, President Eisenhower sent a letter to the Honorable Harvey V. Higley, Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs (VA), designating him as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee. In 1958, the White House advised VA’s General Counsel that the 1954 designation of the VA Administrator as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee applied to all subsequent VA Administrators. Since March 1989, when VA was elevated to a cabinet level department, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has served as the committee’s chairman. The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities, and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans’ service organizations, and the American people. Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Live and Local: Recent Works of the Pellissippi Art Faculty in the Balcony Gallery Live and Local features a mix of ceramics, sculpture, installation, printmaking, drawing, painting, and mixed media. After a successful exhibition in 2012, the studio art faculty of Pellissippi State Community College return to the Emporium to exhibit their recent works.

The Cape Ann Collection – Watercolors by Carl Whitten on the North Wall Cape Ann sits jutting out into the sea 25 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. For more than 150 years, famous artists have been coming to Cape Ann’s quaint and rustic towns of Gloucester, Rockport, Annisquam, Magnolia, Lanesville, and Essex to paint its beauty. “You can never run out of things to paint with Cape Ann’s six lighthouses, fishing boats, sandy beaches, and rocky shores,” said Carl Whitten. “I was truly inspired by the natural seaside light, colors, and flavor of Cape Ann.” Whitten has received numerous awards for his paintings, which have exhibited in the Emporium Center, McGee Tyson Airport, Dogwood Regional Fine Arts exhibits, and in the Knoxville Mayors’ offices. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Tennessee Artists Association, and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville.

Kimberly Pack: Lovenestmonsters in the Display Case The drawings of Kimberly Pack came about out of necessity. Tough times call for some unusual ways of escaping. Her drawings of mopey-faced, scraggly-haired guys became an outlet for that escape. To create guys with lumpy bodies and eyes with dark circles and puffiness allowed her to bring to life with pen and paper the sadness and uncertainty of her life. Pack was born in Virginia to a family of people with sleepy, sorrowful eyes whom even in the toughest of times were always there for her. The drawings possibly represent the small town she was born in – surrounded by mountains and home to a Dupont factory located across the street from her childhood home. There were plenty of characters in that town and in her own family, many of whom come through in the drawings she creates.

The Knoxville Community Darkroom in the Atrium This show represents work from the board members of T h e Kn o xv i l l e Community D a r k ro o m a n d includes a combination of traditional anaKnoxville Community log, digital, and Darkroom alternative photographic processes. KCD is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering darkroom space for those who want to develop film and print in a traditional black and white darkroom. Education is a top priority, and KCD offers classes in film development and printing, in addition to alternative processes. They also offer classes designed for high school and middle school students. Their space provides a great opportunity for all photographers in the area to come together. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday 9 to 5 pm. quickly approaching, and along with decorating your trees and frantically cleaning your house before your relatives arrive, we have a few events you should add to your to-do list! We don’t waste any time before kicking off the season. Right after you finish your Thanksgiving turkey, bring all of your family and friends to Market Square on Friday, November 24. The fun starts at 5:30 pm with live music in Krutch Park Extension, kicking off the Regal Celebration of Lights. Thousands will gather for the lighting of the 42-foot Christmas tree off Gay Street. But that’s only the beginning – the fun lasts until 9 pm. We know you can’t get enough of that Christmas music you’ve waited all year for, so it will continue on the Market Square Stage at the WDVX Holiday Ho Ho Hoedown at 6:30 pm with some Americana music. Along with the music and the lighting of the tree, there will be added fun for the whole family, from the Polar Express train running down Gay Street to photos with Santa, marshmallow roasting, and more. You’ll just have to come see it for yourself! While you’re at it, remember to stop by Holidays on Ice presented by Home Federal Bank, and watch or join in on the fun as our ice skating rink will be making its grand opening for the season at 10 am on November 24th. It will be open seven days a week until January 7. Do you like peppermint? If you do, we have the perfect activity for you! When walking downtown Knoxville anytime between November 24 and January 7, you’ll discover a Peppermint Trail that leads you to the Peppermint Village, where different merchants and restaurants will be offering a variety of peppermintinspired food, drinks, art, and more. If you aren’t as much into peppermint, it’s still an enjoyable experience to walk the trail and

enjoy all of the beautiful window displays of the participating merchants and restaurants. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without everyone’s favorite Christmas parade put on by WIVK. The station folks really out-did themselves this year. There will be live bands, dancers, floats, and lights, and Santa Claus has even agreed to make an appearance! This will be a great experience for not only the kids, but the adults, too, as it never fails to spread the Christmas spirit to everyone as we ring in the month of December. Come on out to Gay Street on December 1 at 7 pm, and see what all the talk is about. The holidays are all about family, so clear everyone’s schedule on December 8 for Christmas at Chilhowee. Vine Middle School’s chorus will be kicking off with Christmas-themed music as we light the tree in Chilhowee Park and Exposition Center at 6 pm. There will be hay rides through the park, pictures with Santa, train rides, and more. We will also be offering hot cocoa and a marshmallow roasting, because who doesn’t love hot cocoa and marshmallows? We will also be showing a holiday movie. It will be a great family night or even date night. Treat yourself with some Christmas cheer, and come out to Chilhowee Park. Over the hills we go, laughing all the way,

bells on bobtails ring, making spirits bright, what fun it is to ride and sing of Tour de Lights tonight! Come one, come all, on December 15 for a family-friendly bike ride with a Christmas twist. The competition winner is not who peddles the fastest but who can come up with the most creative and decorated bike and rider. That’s right – we want you to be decked out, too! It is just as much fun for the admirer to observe all the beautiful lights and decorations as they ride past, so don’t let not decorating a bike stop you from attending this event, which starts at 7 pm in Market Square. It may not be New York City, but it’s Knoxville, and we like to celebrate. In Market Square on New Year’s Eve, the Bicho Brothers will be performing at 10 pm. All the bars and restaurants will be open, so find a good seat, get a drink, and ring in the New Year with all your closest friends and family while you watch the ball drop at midnight! Dolly Parton Announces Hurricane Relief Efforts

P A R T O N will assist with the ongoing relief efforts around the United States and its territories by making a contribution to the One America Appeal for Hurricane Relief to assist with immediate life sustaining needs of those affected. The One America Appeal is a joint appeal that was originally launched by all five living former American Presidents to encourage their fellow citizens to support recovery efforts from Hurricane Harvey. This special appeal has been expanded to include areas most affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. “After the tremendous outpouring of support my hometown received last winter after the wildfires raged through the area, I want to do my part to help other areas affected by natural disasters,” said Dolly. “I admire and respect this effort led by our Presidents, so it is an honor for me to contribute to their work.”

Have you committed to helping a friend move, meeting your mom for lunch, or a myriad of other obligations that, for one reason or another, have been forgotten or not followed through with? I know we want to raise children who keep their commitments and know that when they give their word to others, it means something. Parents, this will rarely happen if our children do not watch you and I be commitment keepers. They must learn to trust and understand that trust comes through keeping our word. May I suggest that we each ponder if there is room in our lives for improvement in this area. If we identify that there is room, commit today to not only yourself, but to your family that from this day forward, you are going to do better. It’s difficult to make changes when we do not

tell anyone else about our commitment. We each need accountability. If you’re not sure that you will be able to follow through with something, do not commit. If you do, however, make sure that your priority each day is to keep the commitments you have already made to others. If and when things come up, important things that prevent you from keeping your previous commitments, be completely honest and inform the individual counting on you promptly, so that they may make necessary changes. May we do what we say so our children can follow our example.

Dermatology is proud to announce the addition of the Votiva radio frequency platform for tightening of the skin on the face, neck, and body. Radio frequency is a form of electromagnetic energy, which travels in waves. When these waves travel through tissue, heat is generated. The heat that is produced by the application of RF energy causes a controlled thermal injury, which in turn is repaired by the body. During this repair process, we see the production of new collagen and elastin. The power of RF is being harnessed more and more effectively in the field of aesthetic medicine to tighten and firm skin. Fractora marries RF and microneedling treatment. Microneedling is perhaps the hottest skin care trend in aesthetic medicine today. It has many benefits, including improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, pore size, skin tone, and texture. It does this by inducing production of collagen and elastin in the treated areas. The needles in at-home microneedling devices are limited to 1.5-mm, while the needles in professional grade microneedling devices may reach up to 3-mm in length. The Fractora hand piece on the Votiva platform is the most advanced fractional RF microneedling device on the market. It delivers RF energy through an array of micro needles. There are three different arrays that can be utilized depending the indication. There are 3-mm coated arrays, which deliver energy to the subdermal tissue, while coated and uncoated 1.5-mm arrays deliver energy more superficially. By fractionally ablating the skin and restructuring the deeper tissues, patients see significant improvement in wrinkles, skin tightness, acne scarring, and pore size. Fractora can also be used to effectively treat active acne and has the additional benefit of improving acne scarring. It can even be used to dramatically reduce underarm sweating and odor. For the patient, Fractora treatments are made comfortable by the application of a topical numbing cream. Depending on the intensity of the treatment, numbing injections may be necessary. The number of treatments varies depending on the condition but is typically between one and six. All but the most aggressive treatments require little to no downtime. Although near immediate improvement may be seen, full results may take six to 12 weeks.
