HANKSGIVING DAY was always a flurry

of activity in our kitchen when I was growing up. My mother wanted everything to be picture perfect for the holiday dinner, and she and my grandmother were busy all day with preparations. The turkey was Photo by D. Roberts Photography stuffed and in the oven early, and the aroma of the cooking filled the house. My sister and I were in charge of setting the table. We had to be extra careful, because for holiday dinners, we used the special china, silver, crystal, and table linens. No paper napkins or plastic tablecloth for this dinner. My dad was in charge of carving the turkey and leading us in a Thanksgiving prayer. It was a special family time for all of us, and those memories come flooding back every time I look at that special set of china, which is now in my keeping. My mom and dad will not be a part

Incorporating the Beauty and Sustainability of Reclaimed Wood into

Your Story D

EDICATED TO the pres-

ervation of our remaining old growth forests, Plantation Reclaimed reclaims the unique species of wood discovered in centuries-old tobacco barns, old abandoned barns, and warehouses that might otherwise deteriorate to an un-useful state. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to feature Plantation Reclaimed founders and owners, and daughter and father team, Jenny and Jim Blalock. You’ll learn how this antique wood can be incorporated into both new and existing homes in a variety of applications, including flooring, siding, mantels, and beams, just to name a few. The sheer beauty and rich patina from these reclaimed pieces of history simply cannot be replicated. Jenny has also successfully combined the entrepreneurial skills she developed early in her life while working alongside her father in his plumbing supply business with both her skills as a general contractor and her talents as an interior designer. She is the founder and owner of the highly recognized and award-winning new home construction company, Luxe Homes & Design, which has earned a reputation

for designing and creating homes that not only meet the existing needs of each and every member of your family member, but anticipates their future needs as well. EK: Describe how you successfully create an authentic sense of style using reclaimed antique wood in homes and offices that is difficult to achieve using modern building materials. Jenny: Reclaimed antique wood is unrivaled in terms of its ageless beauty and charm and is unparalleled in its architectural quality and character. Using authentic reclaimed wood in your home or office adds great character that you cannot duplicate using newly sawn wood alternatives. EK: You describe reclaimed wood as pieces of living history. Explain that for our readers. Jenny: The barns of yesterday are pieces of a living history. They have a story to tell. Some will tell of hard times during drought or floods, disease, and war. They may also tell a happier story of hardworking families brought together and succeeding. By incorporating reclaimed wood into your home or office, you are restoring a part of history. As we like to say, “Reclaiming history one floor at a time.”

EK: You also describe salvaging antique lumber as environmentally responsible. Why? Jenny: We are dedicated to the preservation of our old growth forests, protecting them as a legacy to future generations. Our unique, antique wood comes from tobacco and abandoned barns and warehouses and other structures as much as 200 years old! Not only is it environmentally responsible to recycle antique lumber, but the character and unique patina of each piece of reclaimed wood, which occurs naturally over decades and centuries, just can’t be replicated. EK: Why is the use of reclaimed wood important for home and business owners wishing to create that one-of-a-kind appearance? Jenny: Using reclaimed wood in your home or office offers you that one-of-a-kind look that cannot be duplicated. Therefore, each floor, accent wall, or beam will never appear alike. That is the natural beauty inherent in every reclaimed antique board that you just won’t find using today’s manufactured products – it’s the real antique deal. EK: How affordable is the use of reclaimed lumber? Jenny: There is a great deal of labor involved in reclaiming antique lumber. From disassembling old barns and warehouses to the finished products we sell, there are a great many steps. Reclaimed wood must first be removed, transported, sorted, de-nailed, and kiln dried before being milled into the finished product. During the process, each piece of wood must be handled dozens of times before it’s finally installed in your home or office. We strive, however, to ensure that our pricing is as affordable and competitive as possible. EK: Describe some of the creative uses for reclaimed wood at home or at the office. Jenny: With the wide variety of hardwoods we mill that are available to be used for flooring and siding, we have the perfect opportunity to really get creative. By combining our talents with our clients’ desires, we create our one-of-a-kind masterpieces. We can customize any flooring or siding to have rounded edge beveling to provide more of a plank look. We can even custom mill any species of un-reclaimed wood. We take pride in being a custom mill shop dedicated to creating the finished look you want. We are also very proud of our custom designed barn doors, shutters, tables, and countertops, which offer you that extraordinary, one-of-a-kind look you’ve been searching for. EK: Tell our readers about the different types and species of reclaimed lumber available for them to select from. Jenny: Some of the most popular items you will discover on our website include our Highlands Hit, Skip Oak, and Tennessee Tavern hardwoods. We also sell of large quantities of our Original Face Barn Siding for accent walls and ceilings and hand hewn or rough sawn beams for ceilings or mantels. Also, our black walnut flooring is one of our most popular items in our old growth series of flooring. From oak to pine, Plantation Reclaimed can custom mill just about any type of wood. If there is something else that you are interested in, contact us and we will try to make it a reality. EK: Where is your antique wood sourced from, and where is it milled into the different types of products Plantation Reclaimed offers? Jenny: We are committed to buying locally and supporting small area businesses. Although we ship our products nationwide, our products are all sourced locally and are milled right here in Knoxville. EK: How do you feel that reclaimed wood enhances your home or office’s value? Jenny: When purchasing any of our products, whether it’s flooring, siding, beams, or doors, we believe it adds a truly unique and intrinsic value to your home, and you’ve added something of historic significance to your home that cannot be duplicated. No antique wooden floor, accent wall, or barn door will ever be alike. Reclaimed wood adds that one-of-a-kind appearance, character, and warmth to your home or office that is unavailable with any other building material. EK: Describe your customer care experience. Jenny: Plantation Reclaimed is dedicated to providing you with

the very best customer care experience possible. We want each of our clients to love their finished products as much as we do. You can depend on us to provide you with quality products that add value to your home or office. We stand behind it. That’s our commitment from my family to yours. EK: You have a spectacular gallery that can be found at www. plantationreclaimed.com, which can serve as inspiration for home or business owners open to the idea of using reclaimed antique lumber in a future building or remodeling project. For our readers who might wish to learn more about either Plantation Reclaimed or Luxe Homes & Design, what is the best way to reach you? Jenny: Thank you for recommending our website as a resource for our clients. We are very proud of the reclaimed wood products produced by Plantation Reclaimed and enjoy sharing our clients’ photos in our online gallery. They really have served as an inspiration for new clients. For your readers wishing to contact me, the best way to reach me is either by email at jenny@plantationreclaimed. com or by phone at 865-243-4604. I’ve discovered that most people prefer to email. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Jenny: First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many customers for both their support and encouragement since first launching Plantation Reclaimed and Luxe Homes & Design. I would also like to thank my dad, who works so hard alongside me every day. I’ve had the honor of working with him for 20 years now. Many people have told me throughout the years that they could never work with their parents, but despite the inevitable ups and downs of self-employment, these challenges have actually strengthened our relationship. Whether building homes for people like you or milling antique reclaimed flooring for your home, my dad shares my passion for quality craftsmanship and personal integrity. We absolutely love what we do and feel blessed to be able to serve our customers each and every day.

M Y W I F E a nd I launched FML Painting more than 15 years ago, our goal was to provide homeowners and business owners with a superior customer service experience that is increasingly difficult to find today. In creating this experience, we turned to our experiences in Europe, where skills such as painting were regarded as an art performed by highly skilled craftsmen who invested years learning their craft as apprentices before becoming fully qualified craftsmen. At FML Painting, our painters progress in their craft as apprentices under the careful supervision of an experienced painter. This commitment to quality is to also offer each of our customers an unconditional guarantee on all work we perform. Also, to provide a completely turn-key customer experience, we also offer pressure washing, drywall repair and finishing, and remodeling. And because all of the work we offer is performed by our own employees, you never have to worry about the challenges that often result from painting contractors who rely almost entirely on subcontractors. We have earned a reputation of listening

Rediscover Fine Hardwood Floors Under Your Christmas Tree This Holiday Season

Y

OU’VE TRIED everything, but the cosmetic only solutions available at the “big box” stores and online, which promised to restore your home’s once beautiful hardwood floors, just didn’t deliver on their promise. So, once again, the skirt under the family Christmas tree will be larger this season in an attempt to camouf lage your hardwood f loor’s unsightly dents, scratches, and UV damage. European Fine Hardwood Floors of Knoxville has the perfect solution for restoring your home’s hardwood floors. They are not your typical hardwood flooring installer and refinisher. Also, refinishing your hardwood floors doesn’t mean moving out of your home, only to return to a thick layer of dust deposited throughout your entire home. Valera Tomescu, founder and owner of Europea n Fine Ha rdwood Floors, learned his craft from his grandfather in Europe during several decades. Valera has combined the skills he learned from his grandfather with the state-of-the-art technology developed by the number one name in the worldwide hardwood floor refinish-

ing industry: Bona. Both the skills Valera has learned and the latest technology made available from Bona allow homeowners to experience an entirely dust-free refinishing experience, as all dust from sanding is safely removed out-of-doors using high-efficiency vacuums placed outside your home, which are connected to their refinishing equipment using high-volume, high-efficiency

vacuum hoses. The result? No dust. Refinishing is also the perfect opportunity to change your floor’s stain color. You also have the choice of several final finishes, including odor-free, water-based finishes. The recipient of the much coveted Bona Certified Craftsman Award, European Fine Hardwood Floors customers are assured that all the work they perform will adhere to the highest standards in the industry. To discover how you too can return your home’s hardwood flooring to its original showcase quality appearance, without the dust and before the holidays, or to install new hardwood flooring, call Valera at European Fine Hardwood Floors today. You may even be tempted to lose the Christmas tree skirt this year!

Take Your Holiday Party to the Next Level

Here are some other great ideas to jumpstart your holiday party planning:

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

O

N T H E O N E hand,

the holidays are all about traditions. You and your family probably have some favorite recipes you like to cook, or maybe it’s a trip to the tree farm or pumpkin patch. But just as much as holidays are about tradition, many have an insatiable drive to outdo themselves and try something new, to outdo the festivities of years past and make this holiday season the most memorable yet. How can you outshine yourself this holiday season? The answer is simple: Think big. Don’t be confined to the party supplies you have around your house; stretch out and rent equipment similar to what professional party planners use. RentalHQ can connect you to nearby rental stores and help your party stand out from the usual traditional gatherings. 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

1.

Serve your food the right way. Preparing a holiday meal is a labor of love, but even for small gatherings, it can be a real challenge to make sure that delicious food stays warm and is served at its optimal temperature. Renting chafing dishes for main courses and hors d’oeuvres can ensure that the temperature and flavor of your food stays just right and that those masterpieces you cook up taste better than ever. 2. Add some smoke, snow, or bubbles. Whether you want to bring some snow to a Christmas party or some cool smoke and fog effects to ring in the New Year, renting a snow or smoke machine can create a party atmosphere like no other. 3. Drink in style. To throw a truly stellar holiday party, there are some items you must have. On the top of many people’s list is a full-service bar. If you don’t have a built-in bar in your home or party venue, you’re in luck. Why? Because you’ll have more options to choose from when you decide to rent one. Whether it’s an illuminated bar, modernist style, or a classic stone-top design, renting a portable bar to fit your party is key. 4. Fountains of deliciousness. To really go all out, you need to think bigger. You need to plan as though you were throwing an A-list celebrity party. Renting a champagne or chocolate fountain is a sure way to do this. A perfect blend of luxury and deliciousness, a fountain will leave guests talking about that tumbling tower of liquid chocolate or bubbling champagne for years to come. 5. Focus on the details. For many holiday get-togethers, it’s all about having the right plates and serving ware. For a reasonable price, you can easily rent fine china and exquisite glassware that will wow your guests. Best of all, you won’t have to spend a fortune on items you only use a couple of times a year! Need help finding these items or have other party ideas in mind? Locate virtually everything you need by visiting www.RentalHQ.com, and be prepared to set a new standard for holiday parties.

5 Tips to Make Family Mealtimes More Mindful T

HE HECTIC workday is over. As

you pull into your driveway, you feel relief because you’ve finally escaped the cranky co-workers, the deadlines, and traffic jams. Now you can spend the next few hours relaxing at home with your family. What better way to enjoy this time than with a delicious meal together? Sometimes the lingering stress can be hard to shake, especially if you’re in a rush to get dinner on the table. You can shed your stress and make this time together more meaningful. Consciously ease into the transition from work mode to family mode, and use these tips to make your evening meal more relaxing and mindful. 1. Take a breath. As soon as you get home, just take a few minutes and chill out. What you’ll want to do is shake off any lingering “fight or flight” stress response that’s making you feel tense and on edge. With deep breathing techniques – the kind that get your belly moving – you’ll lower your heart rate and feel much calmer. Sit in your favorite chair, soften your gaze, and start those long, drawn-out inhales and exhales, counting your breath if needed. Just by transitioning into this calmer state, you’ll set the right mood and standard for the rest of the evening. 2. Give the devices a timeout. Being mindful is all about staying in the present and following each action with intention and awareness. But when your mobile device is pinging from the latest Facebook update, text message, or news alert, that can distract us from this calm and aware state of mind. For now, while 18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

you’re preparing and eating the meal, put the devices out of reach – or in another room, if that’s practical. 3. Include the kids. With devices out of the way, it’s also much easier and more pleasant to focus on the people in the room. If your kids are hanging around the kitchen, take it as a sign they want to be with you, so use this time to connect. A great way to do this is to include kids with the meal preparation. The youngest ones can rinse fruits and vegetables, cut soft foods with a butter knife, and tear lettuce. Older kids can help measure ingredients, stir and whisk, and eventually peel foods with a paring knife. 4. Simplify your menu. Eliminate the stress of getting weeknight meals on the table, and build a list of delicious go-to meals that you can prepare with ease. For example, the recipe on the right for Easy Shrimp Kabobs will allow you to get the entrée ready in minutes, plus the skewers and easy dips will make this a fun favorite with the kids. 5. Slow down and savor the food. Give yourself a few moments for mindful eating. Before earnest conversation begins, put your focus on the food you’ve taken the time to prepare. Put down your fork, and pay attention to the flavors, the textures, and how you respond to them. No matter how hungry you are, don’t rush. Mindful eating is all about pacing yourself and staying in the moment to experience the delicious meal you are eating. After a long day, you can make the evening meal more relaxing and enjoyable by

y u B t ’ n o D t a h T o t in THE HOLIDAY SEASON

is fast approaching, and with it comes the temptation to over-indulge. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s provide the perfect opportunity to not only reminisce with family and friends, but also to pack on the pounds that will be center stage in our resolutions for 2018. There’s no denying that the temptation to overeat is greatest at this time of the year, but there are some common sense steps you can take to avoid the food traps that are awaiting you at the holiday office parties, the neighbor’s house, and, of course, at mom and dad’s house. » If you already exercise, try working out before attending a holiday event, which has been shown to reduce our appetites. » Slow down when eating. Pace yourself and remember that it requires at least 20 minutes for our brains to tell us that our stomachs are already full. » Try eating four or five small meals or snacks before attending a holiday party or dinner. Avoid starving yourself all day in anticipation of the feast that awaits you. » Give yourself a break, say one day each month during November, December, and January, to enjoy yourself before returning to your normal healthy exercise and eating habits the next day. At Fitness Together, we are committed to helping you achieve your weight and fitness goals. Here’s one more suggestion: Why not begin your 2018 healthy New Year’s resolutions at Fitness Together today? Why postpone a stronger, fitter, and leaner you? With just three 45-minute sessions per week, you can start seeing results this year! Programs are individually designed for every client, so there is no wasted time. Each exercise is done with correct form and intensity to achieve optimum results safely and efficiently. Also, our one-on-one

The FT Training Team wishes you a happy holiday season! accountability can help you avoid that much dreaded holiday bulge. As an added incentive, we are offering our special Holiday Personal Training Jump Start Gift Package at a one-time savings of $200. Each package includes: » Initial fitness assessment and consultation » 10 private personal training sessions » Fitness Together gym bag » Dry-fit t-shirt » Water bottle So call or visit today, and say goodbye to the holiday bulge and hello to an all-new, healthier you and a $200 savings.

OW EXCITING to be in the fun, fast-

paced, and constantly changing world of fashion… a source of both enjoyment and challenges as we purge our closets of outdated styles and bring in the new! Fall and holiday 2017… elements reminiscent of the ’70s… from feminine and classic styling (think Jackie O!) to Boho-chic (lacy and romantic), your fall season should be fun this year! The cardigan reigns this season! Open slouchy cocoon, oversized easily cascading pieces that may be fringed or not… some looks are subtle, while others may be extremely artsy, but all give the versatility of the cardi! And sweaters! How can you not love the season of the sweater? They may have varied shapes, but all have one thing in common… snuggly sensuality! Push that wimpy little lightweight sweater to the back of your closet this season and move the cozy, oversized silhouette to the front! Pair it with a skinny jean or legging tucked into a tall boot, or perhaps one of the fabulous short booties that are showing up everywhere this season, and you’re right on target! Bold statement jewelry and up-to-date makeup

are the finishing touches. Our arT by fisher jewelry collection is designed by our very own Renee Fisher, and each piece is one of a kind. Renee will even create a custom piece just for you. arT by fisher offers a varied collection of styles and stones that will reflect your style. Renee is also a makeup artist with 30 years experience worldwide and is willing to share her expertise and tips that will enhance your coloring, your face shape, and your personal style. A Small Town Christmas BY VICKIE SAL ADIN, OWNER OF GALLERY ON MAIN

’Twas a month before Christmas, Not a gift had been bought, Nothing’s been purchased, Not what I’d been taught! Time to go shopping, What on earth could I do? It was original gifts I was hoping for, Ones that would last, too! Sweetwater was the place, For those original gifts, I hear, So I got dressed, put on my face, Grabbed my purse, and was loaded for “bear!”

OR 28 YEARS, comedian Kathleen Madigan has been touring 250 nights on the road and squeezing in hour-long filmed specials and performances on every late night show ever made. From 25 appearances on the Tonight Show and multiple appearances on Letterman and Conan to recently riding around with Jerry Seinfeld in his internet series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” Madigan is still having a blast and selling out theaters across the country. Her most recent special, “Bothering Jesus,” is her fifth hour long standup special and will be her third special to be available on Netflix. “I love working with them,” said Madigan. “They’re the young people. Network TV will need to adapt quickly to even have a chance to stay in the game. Netflix gets it and makes it so easy for us. Instead of it being a battle of content and rules, it’s just fun. Doggie Hygiene 101 B

RUSHING YOUR dog’s coat

is an important step in promoting good health. One of the main reasons to brush is to reduce shedding. The “non shedding” dog is a myth. Dogs shed their fur naturally as their coat is replaced with new hair follicles. Most dogs go through a process called “blowing the coat” usually twice per year, completely replacing their fur in order to deal with changing temperatures, and brushing your dog’s fur can help reduce shedding. Brushing helps prevent bacterial buildup. As fur is shed, so are dead skin cells. If dead hair and skin cells are not removed, they get trapped in the deep layers of a dog’s fur. The dead skin cells may promote bacterial growth, causing adverse reactions to your dog ’s skin. A notable symptom caused by lack of brushing is a foul odor. To help avoid bacterial buildup on your dog’s skin, brush your dog on a regular basis. Brushing your dog’s fur also helps ensure that the natural oils of your dog’s coat are

YOUR KEY TO BETTER CANINE HEALTH

distributed evenly. This is especially true of long-haired dogs, as they usually don’t have enough oil to properly condition their fur. Brushing distributes the natural oils produced by your dog’s skin more evenly and effectively. Further, brushing prevents matting. Matted fur is a magnet that attracts dirt, debris, and pests. Small mats should be brushed out regularly. Never allow your dog to develop snarled, painful mats. Proper maintenance of your dog’s coat, including brushing, combing, and clipping, is valuable for your dog’s comfort and wellbeing. John and Erica, our groomers, are happy to discuss a regular maintenance program for your dog. Together we can help you develop a plan for both at home and at the spa. Give us a call today.

Christmas at Biltmore

A

HOLIDAY TRADITION that goes back more than 120 years, Christmas at Biltmore enchants those who visit Biltmore during its annual holiday celebration set for November 3 through January 7, 2018.

Every year Biltmore transforms into an unforgettable yuletide vacation destination. Biltmore’s design team will weave this year’s theme – “A Vanderbilt Christmas” – throughout every element created for the season, incorporating a strong Gilded Age look and feel with elegant details rooted in Vanderbilt family Christmas stories. Inside the 250-room Biltmore House, a towering 35-foot-tall Fraser Fir tree laden with ornaments and wrapped packages tucked into its branches serves as the seasonal centerpiece. Guests may enjoy the entire estate as part of admission. More than one hundred Christmas trees – each hand-decorated and styled – grace the house and estate combined. The Conservatory anchoring the Walled Garden is filled with poinsettias and offers a daily complimentary seminar that provides tips for guests’ own holiday décor. At Antler Hill Village & Winery, guests may enjoy free tastings of Biltmore wines. New this year, Biltmore Winery is decorated with globeshaped ornaments hanging from the ceiling, giving guests the feeling of being inside a bottle of sparkling wine. Weekends in Antler Hill Village will feature carolers sharing Christmas favorites and Santa making appearances at the bandstand to hear wish lists from guests of all ages. Enhanced this year with even more sparkling lights, Antler Hill Village is a must see – buildings will be outlined in lights, the fountain lit with special visual effects, and illuminated trees and ornaments will be in abundance.

Candlelight Christmas Evenings: November 3 through January 6, 2018 Biltmore House glows with candlelight and firelight, changing the daytime visit’s mood and experience. By reservation only, Candlelight Christmas Evenings in Biltmore House allow guests to step back in time with 26

DOLLY PARTON B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

E

AST TENNESSEANS are

incredibly proud of Sevierville native, Dolly Parton. Her rise from extreme poverty to superstardom is the stuff of legends. This overwhelming success has allowed Dolly to give back – not only to her native Sevierville, but to the entire world. Her most notable way of doing this is through the Imagination Library that she founded to help stamp out child illiteracy. She’s funded this through her own donations, as well as through the donations of fans from around the world. Her latest donation is by way of her first-ever children’s album entitled “I Believe in You,” where the proceeds will go to the Imagination Library. Dolly recently shared the story behind the new CD and Imagination Library. The most poignant song on the CD is Chemo Hero, which is about pediatric cancer. It seemed very personal, so I asked if she could share the story behind it. “Yes, I can! When you do see the actual CD of the album, inside there’s a picture of two little girls kissing me on the cheek. They’re two of my little nieces. The one on the left is Hannah Dennison. She’s my sister, Rachel’s, daughter. When she was four years old, she got leukemia, and we almost lost her for years and years. “When she was sick, I wrote Chemo Hero and Brave Little Soldier for her and about her. At that time, I took a bunch of my little nieces and nephews and her friends and took them into the recording studio and recorded that and some other children’s songs and fun things for her to have a little tape to listen to 30

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

while she was recuperating. “The Brave Little Soldier was about that, too – children with other diseases. But Chemo Hero I thought was a perfect title, and I’m going to try to make something more of that. At some point, we may try to put that out as a single or, certainly, find all the chemo heroes with some of the children that have overcome the most – even some of the grownups that suffered that and won the battle.” With all that Ms. Parton does regarding illiteracy, it’s obvious that it is a subject near and dear to her heart. She shared why that is. “Well, it’s very important,” she said. “I think all children should be able to read. I actually started the Imagination Library more than 20 years ago in honor of my father who was never able to read or write. My dad got to help me with it, and he felt very proud of me to be doing that and to involve him in it. He got to live long enough to see it doing well. He got such a kick out of seeing people call me the book lady.” Dolly explained why it is important that she be such a strong advocate for children with the Imagination Library and her album. “There’s an old Whitney Houston song – speaking of Whitney Houston, who’s been good to me because of I’ll Always Love You – but there’s a song she had called Children Are Our Future. I loved that song, and I think that’s such a true statement. We have to teach the children, like that old song, Teach Your Children Well, and if you can teach them to read – even if they never have the money to further their education – they can find something, they can read up on anything they want

to know and learn it. “But it’s really a handicap if you can’t read. I really think that’s important, because I know how children need to have self-esteem, and that gives them confidence if they can do those little things. To put books into the hands of children – that’s the reason why we put their little name on it personally, so that they get these books in the mailbox with their name on it. They’re gonna wait there for the mail, or they’re gonna get home from wherever they’ve been and go to the mailbox to see if their little book is there. They have a sense of pride that makes them take some time. It’s important for children to have self-esteem and to know how to read and to feel important – that they can do something. “I know that my father couldn’t read and write like so many of my relatives because they were poor people – country people – had to work at home. One room schools and bad weather and all that. But anyway, it just means a lot to me to be able to do something in that area.” There is much more to this interview, and you can read it all – and even click to contribute to the Imagination Library – at www. boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

N O U R continuing e-Mailbag series, here are some new real-life questions and answers to share with you: Q: If I choose the lump sum pension option when I retire, is it taxable to me? A: Yes it is, if you withdraw it Yvonne Marsh, and don’t elect an IRA rollover. CFP®, CPA And, by the way, if you don’t want to risk losing the lump sum in the markets, an IRA pension annuity with a life insurance company may pay you a higher monthly income than your company would have, plus you keep control of the lump sum as a death benefit for your heirs. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime decision and well worth exploring all of your options. Q: My investment accounts have been going up the last several years, but I’m afraid of another market downturn like we had in 2008. Should I sell my investments and sit in cash for a while? A: Ah, the age-old debate between active investing (timing the market) versus strategic investing (buy and hold). Studies show that, over time, buy and hold strategies outperform active strategies. One analysis by BlackRock showed that $100,000 invested in the S&P 500 from 1997 to 2016 would have grown to $441,141. However, if the investor missed just five of the top performing days, they would only have $292,650. So how to mentally withstand the downturns and stay invested? (1) By holding a well-diversified portfolio that is invested within your risk tolerance and (2) by using a bucket strategy – grouping assets between “now,” “soon,” and “later” buckets. “Now” is the most conservative, “soon” is somewhat conservative, and “later” is more growth oriented. Q: I am going to be 65 and eligible for Medicare but I’m still working. Should I stay on my employer health plan or move to Medicare? A: You need to weigh not only the premium cost for each option, but also the deductibles and outof-pocket costs. Medicare generally has lower deductibles and costs, especially when paired with a Medicare supplement plan. It’s a complicated decision, so we have a Medicare specialist in our office to help people make those decisions. If you’d like to learn more about the real-life topics addressed here today, call our in-house wealth management team for a complimentary meeting. These can be wonderful times to share with friends and family, but it’s also stressful when you are the one who must plan the meals and entertainment, buy the gifts, clean the house, and organize the decorations. Here are a few tips to help you get through the upcoming holidays: » Begin by making a holiday “to do” list of everything you need to accomplish. Decide which tasks you’ll handle yourself and which ones you can outsource. » Plan your meals and entertainment. Get out your recipe books, and decide what you’ll serve. Make your grocery list, and place your orders early for turkey, ham, or other special order items. Get your groceries delivered to save you extra time. » Make your gift list, and see what can be purchased online so you can avoid the rush of holiday shoppers. » Get out the decorations, and recruit your family to help unpack and hang them. » Get your home ready to shine when you entertain friends and family – dust furniture, change linens in the guest room, run the vacuum, polish the silver, dust the baseboards, clean the bathrooms. Keep cleaning products handy for fast touch-ups and easy maintenance after deep cleaning. » Let Fish Window Cleaning add the final touches to make your home sparkle: Clean chandeliers and mirrors. Dust and clean hard-to-reach ceiling fans. Clean skylights and solar panels. Reach and thoroughly clean fixtures in high ceilings or on walls. Clean gutters and downspouts outside your home. Clean awnings. Pressure wash concrete surfaces, siding, gutters, soffits, patios, and decks. Clean all your windows, inside and out. Detail the sills, frames, and tracks and clean screens. Take advantage of our FREE estimate offer and 100% guarantee on all our work. » Call Fish Window Cleaning early to make an appointment, as our holiday schedule fills up quickly. » Make time to have a happy and memorable holiday season with your friends and family this year!

paying full price for anything, and most of all for furniture. Most items sold at retail stores inherently include huge markups, and furniture and room décor are no exception. That’s why we launched Premiere Consignment. Premiere Consignment offers both buyers and sellers the perfect venue for buying and s e l l i n g q u a l i t y, name brand, gently used furniture, décor, area rugs, and art at prices far below their original retail selling prices. The sellers win because they can conveniently sell no longer used items resulting from a relocation, downsizing, or estate sale. Safety is another important consideration, because sellers no longer have to invite potential buyers into their home or sit and wait for buyers who never show up or who want to negotiate an already agreed upon price for an item. Buyers especially appreciate our large selection, as well as our convenient location and business hours. And because we accept most forms of payment, there is no need for sellers to be concerned about bad checks or handling large amounts of cash. Homeowners, here’s a great suggestion for the upcoming holidays. Observe how conveniently guests are able to enjoy your home this holiday season. Did a particular room appear cluttered, obstructing your desired traffic pattern or flow? Was there sufficient seating for all of your guests? Was your dining room table too large or too small? Would a buffet or sideboard have been helpful when serving meals? The arrival of guests provides the perfect opportunity to evaluate how comfortably and efficiently you are able to entertain friends and neighbors. Take a mental picture or jot down some notes on how to make desired improvements for future events. Here’s where Premiere Consignment can help. From décor to furniture, we can help you enhance every room in your home or help you find a new home for quality items that you may no longer need. Why not let Premiere Consignment take the inconvenience out of buying and selling quality, name brand furniture, décor, Oriental rugs, and art while saving you up to 90% off full retail pricing? UR BEST FAMILY friends

are “all about” the holidays. From September through Christmas, their home is the centerpiece of seasonal activity and family and friend gatherings. Holiday décor transforms their home as each holiday unfolds. The aroma when you walk through the door is nostalgic of grandma’s cookies and peppermint sticks. You just WANT to be there sharing in their lives because of their love, but also because their home is such a welcoming oasis in the hustle and bustle of the season. If you are like our friends, there is no doubt you are also in full holiday swing. With

Thanksgiving around the corner, now is the time to revive your home’s appearance and get it completely ready for family and guests to feel welcome and special. If it’s been a while since your tile and grout have had a deep cleaning, you may need help with the hard surfaces in the kitchen, bathrooms, and even the sidewalks and outdoor living areas. If carpets haven’t been cleaned in a while, you may need a restoration cleaning instead of the traditional surface steam cleaning you may be accustomed to. A truly deep down clean home inspires positive interaction and just makes you feel good. Who couldn’t use more of that? Once your home has been deep-down

cleaned, you will be inspired to keep it that way. Of course it is easier to maintain a room that is clean and sanitized than to start from scratch. If you opt to use our professional sealer on your hard surfaces, cleanup from then on will be a snap. All you will need is hot water and a microfiber pad! To inquire about deep cleaning tile and grout, restoration cleaning, or how to care for all your outdoor surfaces, call John at Surface Doc at 865-567-1986 or visit www. SurfaceDoc.com.

HAT A BEAUTIFUL falummer we are having! Yeah, I just made that word up because our fall has felt like summer so far. This is good news and bad news. It’s good because we’re getting to enjoy more days outside, but it’s bad because our plants are not “hardening off.” Hardening off occurs when we start getting those nice cool days and nights that tell plants it’s almost time to sleep for the winter. The plants don’t know that winter is coming, so they just keep growing. There isn’t anything we can do about the weather, so let’s move on to the chores we can do. » You can keep planting. Trees, shrubs, perennials, and pansies/violas can be planted as long as the ground isn’t frozen (which very rarely occurs). Let’s have a little refresher course on planting trees and shrubs: 1. Dig your hole twice as wide as your root ball but no deeper. 2. Mix the soil that comes out of the hole 50/50 with a good planting mix or soil conditioner. If your plants want acidic soil, add soil acidifier. 3. Loosen up the roots on your plant, and I do mean loosen them up! Stick your fingers or a trowel or something in

there and pull them apart! Once a root is the size of a pencil, the direction of growth has been set. If the plant is horribly rootbound, use a saw to remove the outer 1/2” or so. For ball and burlap p l a nt s, we n ow suggest you remove the burlap, because some growers are using synthetics that don’t decompose. You can leave the wire cage, but if you ever have to have that stump ground, the cage will destroy the grinder! 4. Place your plant into its hole and backfill with the soil mixture. Press the soil firmly around the root ball. 5. Water your plant well, and use a root stimulator to help feeder roots establish. 6. Continue watering any week that we do not get 1” of rainfall. 7. Apply mulch no more than 3” deep. Donuts, not volcanoes! Don’t pile mulch around the trunk or you will encourage disease, critters, and air roots. » If you haven’t done a good cleanup of your beds, do that now. Clear out

debris, and cut back dead or dying foliage on perennials. Remove annuals that are still in place, and replace them with pansies. Pull up weeds, and apply Preen or another pre-emergent. » Replace annuals in containers with pansies or evergreen foliage to get ready for the holidays. » Spray fruit trees with dormant oil spray after the leaves are gone. » Speaking of leaves, continue to remove them as they fall. A good alternative is to chop them up with your lawn mower and then use them as mulch around your plants. Decomposing leaves are wonderful for your soil! » Speaking of soil, fall is a good time to add compost and manure so they can break down and enrich your soil during the winter months. Let’s talk briefly about holiday plants. » If there is only one plant that you never buy from a box store, let it be a poinsettia. Frankly, most are doomed before you ever get them home. They are extremely temperamental, and the box store people have no idea how to treat them. Last year I saw about 25 very large poinsettias get loaded into the back of a pickup on a cold day. They were dead before the woman got to the exit. It’s downright tragic! Here are the poinsettia rules: 1. Do NOT expose them to temperatures below 45 degrees. As little as a minute in below freezing temps will turn them black. They are a tropical! 2. Do NOT buy them if they’re still in those plastic sleeves. They are very prone to fungal problems, which are multiplied when they’re in that little personal sauna. In addition, those sleeves camouflage damage. I’ve seen people remove the plastic and have every single branch fall off. 3. Do NOT let water sit in the foil wrap. Take the plant out of the wrap, water it in the sink, and let it drain, then put it back in the foil. If poinsettias sit in water, they will develop root rot. 4. Poinsettias are very fragile. If you bump them, the branches will break off. 5. No, they are not poisonous, but some people/animals will have a bad reaction if they eat them. Keep them out of the reach of pets, children, and drunk party goers. I’ll talk about other holiday plants next month. Don’t forget that we have family grown poinsettias, freshly cut Christmas trees and greenery from North Carolina, and lots of lovely items for decorating your home. Stop by and see us soon!

Did You Fully Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Year?

I

F YOUR HOME wasn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely no. Flying and biting insects can turn outdoor family gatherings into a nightmare, forcing you back indoors. But there’s a solution that can transform your outdoor living spaces into bug-free spaces for next season. Growing numbers of homeowners are creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even weather-proof artwork, but flying and biting insects can prevent homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote enjoyable outdoor living experiences. They provide shade and allow you to extend the time that you, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using your retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to provide a seamless transition with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. Now is the perfect time to install retractable screens on your home to take full advantage of our beautiful Tennessee autumn and to be prepared for all of your outdoor activities in the New Year. It’s a Christmas gift the entire family will enjoy all year-round.

Delivering Flowers and Special Moments During the Holidays

A

S THE SEASONS change

and the holidays approach, many people dedicate their time and resources to those in need. For Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), the holiday season leads to the 9th annual Holiday Delivery initiative. Since the organization’s founding, dedicated volunteers have brought extra cheer by delivering poinsettia plants to patients in area healthcare facilities during the holiday season. In 2016, RAF delivered more than 600 poinsettias to patients in local healthcare facilities such as Parkwest Medical Center, UT Medical Center, Tennova Physicians Regional Medical Center, Turkey Creek Medical Center, Sherrill Hills Retirement Community, Morning Pointe of Powell, and River Oaks of Lenoir City. Volunteers and staff gather in December to collect and distribute poinsettias across our community. By spending just a few minutes with each recipient, volunteers are able to

Delivery volunteers, Christina and Noah, bring much needed cheer to individuals spending their holiday in a healthcare facility spread joy and encouragement where it is most needed. The Holiday Delivery program is funded by generous sponsorships from local companies and families throughout Knoxville. A $10 donation sponsors one

poinsettia delivery, and the donating family’s name or company’s logo will appear on the delivery card. Additionally, donations can be made in honor of someone special, and that person will receive a greeting from us informing them of the gift. Many families choose to make a donation in memory of a loved one, while others find volunteering together to be a rewarding way to serve the community during the holidays. To participate in Holiday Deliveries or to learn more about becoming a sponsor, call 865633-9082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org. Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country.

UT Gardens Plant of the Month: REDBOR KALE B Y C A R O L R E E S E , U T E X T E N S I O N W E S T E R N R E G I O N O R N A M E N TA L H O R T I C U LT U R E S P EC I A L I S T

REDBOR

K A L E has become a “must-have” for winter containers, and it’s becoming more common in garden centers. This stunning foliage plant came to my attention as part of a winter color display in the Chicago Botanic Garden, so that should tell you something about its ability to stand up to low temperatures. I’ve sought it out as one of the truly hardy winter cole crops. Cole crops include many staples among the cool-season vegetables – cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and greens such as kale, chard, turnip, mustard, or collards. Some are standards in cool-season vegetable gardens throughout Tennessee, and others have become part of the popular “ornamental edible” movement for their striking foliage, often seen combined with traditional winter pansies. It pays to be particular about which cole crops to use in winter seasonal color beds and containers. Some will take just a few degrees of frost, and a few can tolerate temperatures in the single digits. The “flowering cabbage” types of kale are among those that only

44

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

tolerate a few degrees of frost before turning to mush. Look for those that survive and flourish throughout the winter, such as dinosaur kale, or Russian kales such as winterbor. King among these survivors is redbor kale. Large, frilly, and dramatically deep purple, redbor kale has never shown a hint of suffering in the several winters I’ve enjoyed it in my pots in West Tennessee. Be aware that it will easily grow to two feet tall, though 30 inches is not uncommon, and each plant can be about that wide. So place accordingly in full sun or mostly sun. If the weather is warm enough for insects to still be active, redbor

kale should be monitored for pests common to cole crops. It’s my understanding that redbor kale is a truly delicious kale, with its sweetness enhanced by frost. So far, however, I have found myself unwilling to sacrifice the beautiful foliage. Perhaps this year I’ll give it a taste, as I saved seed from one in my pots when it bolted in the summer heat and have 50 small plants for my efforts. Seed is easily found online if the plants are not available in your area. Redbor kale can be seen on display at the UT Gardens locations in Jackson and Knoxville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

No Rodents – We Called Dayton’s!

Expect Us Unless You Call Dayton's!

ODENTS ARE a potential health haz-

ard and multiply so quickly that you can have a heavy infestation before you even realize there’s a problem! A rodent has the uncanny ability to squeeze through the smallest of spaces, coming in through tiny openings in your home or coming up from your crawl space or basement through a small opening in the floor!

Rodents breed rapidly. Call Dayton’s before a small infestation becomes a large one!

dark and unseen.

One reason you may not see rodents is because they are nocturnal, coming out at night to forage around while you are sleeping. Some things to watch for are droppings, anything that looks like it has been gnawed, and rub marks on areas that are left by the oil in their skin as they make their nightly foraging trips. It’s not always what we eat that they’re after; they’ll forage for water and dine on dog food, cat food, and just about anything that’s edible. Should you wait to call Dayton’s until you SEE a rodent? NO! The best approach is preventative where Dayton’s will set up bait stations with an edible substance rodents will eat and take back to their nest to share. These stations have small entrance holes so they are not dangerous if you have pets around, plus they are hidden in out-of-the-way areas.

New customers can receive $25 OFF one preventative rodent treatment or $25 OFF one rodent control service with an annual pest agreement, which also includes insect pest control. All services are guaranteed!

HIS YEAR marks a number

of milestones for Amish Excellence. We marked our first anniversary, more than doubling in size of our retail showroom, and our first time participating in the Parade of Homes. Let me begin by thanking each and every one of you for your support and encouragement. Our success would not have been possible without you. We would also like to express our appreciation to Weaver Homes Company for extending us an invitation to participate in this year’s Parade of Homes. Frequent visitors to past Parade of Homes, this was our first ever invitation to participate as a vendor. We invested a great deal of time selecting just the right furniture items to display at this year’s Parade of Homes. We visited a number of our

Amish craftsmen and toured a regional Amish furniture show, which was one of the largest in the country. We even hosted more than 70 Amish craftsmen and their families to a special event for the purpose of exchanging ideas, learning new and exciting changes, and to continue to strengthen friendships. We never cease to be amazed at the creativity of our craftsmen. The concept on the part of so many consumers that Amish furniture is limited to craftsman style, oak furniture is totally dispelled at Amish Excellence. You simply won’t believe your eyes when you visit our newly expanded showroom. The extensive variety of hardwoods, stains, finishes, and types and styles of furniture you’ll discover will completely surprise you. Many customers are appreciative of our extensive displays, which serve as inspiration for all the custom-made,

solid hardwood, Amish furniture we design and create for each of our customers. While you may be excited about all the possibilities that Amish Excellence offers, one thing has not changed, and that is the quality that is built into every piece of furniture we sell. And here’s one more thing that you’ll discover: Competitive prices. You’ll find that our custom designed and hand-crafted Amish made furniture is often less than non-custom, name brand furniture being sold at the big box furniture stores.

’Tis the Season for a Holiday-Ready Pantry

T

HE HOLIDAY season is here, and

that means a lot of cooking for family, friends, and neighborhood parties. Whether it’s your mom’s sugar cookie recipe or creating a new appetizer, when your pantry is a jumbled mess or lacking sufficient storage, finding ingredients can take as long as cooking. If you’re in need of a new pantry that makes it easy to stay organized, design experts from Tailored Living will develop a complementary custom pantry. Tailored Living of Knoxville, your whole-home organization company, will help maximize available storage space in your pantry and suggest additional options, such as pull-out shelving, easy-to-see spice racks, and slide-out baskets for bulk items. However, if you’re just trying to better utilize your existing pantry, keeping even the smallest pantry organized can help turn your kitchen into a more efficient space. The best way to do this is to section off your pantry into areas where you can grab everything you need without having to think about and search out various items.

Organize

Your pantry is not functional if you can’t see anything. Take time to rearrange everything into “zones.” Some of the most common zones include snacks, canned goods, spices

against all your favorite recipes. Make a shopping list and restock all at once so you don’t have to rush out while cooking before the party. There are lots of sales on baking products during the holiday season. Staples like flour, sugar, and butter have a long shelf life if they are stored properly, so these can be purchased well in advance.

Provide Guest Accessibility

and sauces, breakfast, and baking supplies. Organize your bulky equipment so it’s easy to reach and use. Give your mixer its own corner in the pantry, and place other large items like cake rings, blenders, and coffee makers in the same area.

Take Inventory of Season Staples

Once you’ve organized your pantry into zones, quickly evaluate what you already have. Compare your current inventory

If children will be around for the holidays, place a jar of sweets on a low shelf to help make the season a little more magical. If you have overnight houseguests, keep breakfast essentials like cereal and coffee at the front of your pantry. Healthy snacks like mixed nuts should be accessible at all times to help satisfy hungry guests between meals. If you need help getting organized this holiday season, call Tailored Living so you don’t waste precious time searching for sage and only being able to find the sugar!

ANY OF US have already begun

planning for holiday events and family gatherings. As a parent and grandfather, I know just how important this time of the year is but how stressful holiday preparation can be as well. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we’ve been helping busy families prepare for the holidays for more than 30 years. So why is it important to clean your home’s carpets and Oriental and area rugs before your guests arrive? Well, for starters, to enhance the appearance of every room in your home. Also, if children and grandchildren play on your rugs and carpeting, you’ll want these surfaces to be as clean and healthy as they can be. There’s also a practical side. Well-maintained carpets and rugs will not only look better longer, but they’ll also last longer. You see, abrasives, dirt, and other contaminants are tracked into our homes and onto our carpeting and rugs from the bottoms of our shoes and our pet’s feet. Not only do these elements contaminate our carpets and rugs, making them look dull and dingy, but many of these contaminants are abrasive in nature and can permanently damage carpeting and rug fibers. Also, some of these tracked-in elements are snow and ice removal chemicals that can chemically bond to your home’s carpet and Oriental rug fibers, shortening their life expectancy. Our truck-mounted cleaning system uses today’s state-of-the-art technology to remove dirt and grime that other systems simply leave behind. Also, our Oriental and area rug cleaning boutique uses an 11-step proprietary cleaning process that can safely clean most rugs that might just become a family heirloom. Also, for you dog lovers, if Fido has had an accident on one of your valued Oriental or area rugs, call us immediately. Pet urine alters a rug’s pH and can negatively impact your rug’s color stability, causing color bleeding. So act quickly! Time is your biggest enemy. If you can use a little help preparing for the holidays this year – and who couldn’t – remember the company who has earned a superior reputation for unmatched superior cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. We are so thankful for all our friends like you and our family who have entrusted us to take care of your cleaning needs for more than three decades. May your holiday season be a blessed time with family and friends.

IGHT THE PARK, a five-week display of tens of thousands of twinkling lights at Founders Park at Campbell Station, begins November 27 and runs through January 1. Festivities begin with Countdown to Light the Park, which is 5:30 to 7:00 pm on November 27. This free event features musical performances, seasonal refreshments, and a visit from a special guest in red. A new feature this year is a decorative mailbox for letters to Santa! The main event will be Farragut Mayor, Ralph McGill, along with other members of the

Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen, flipping the giant switch to light more than 60 trees, garlands, and much more. Parking for Countdown to Light the Park is available across the street at Westgate Christian Fellowship. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to assist those crossing Campbell Station Road. Additional parking is available at Farragut Primary School, located just north of the park on Campbell Station Road. tion, Do Not Enter” sign on the door? A good, working laundry room should not be closed off from the rest of the home, but open for use. Laundry rooms should have the same attention to detail as other rooms in the home. After all, work is more pleasant when you enjoy being in the space. A well-organized laundry room also allows family and guests to help themselves when needed. Just like any organizing project, start by discarding what is no longer needed or wanted. Then send those items that should be elsewhere in the home on their way. Now you are starting with a blank canvas to design a room that is aesthetic and functional. Create “zones” for various chores. These include guest supplies, house cleaning, laundry, linens, ironing, and even entertaining. When we design spaces, we ask questions to define your needs. Are drawers needed for smaller items? Do some shelves need to be deeper than others? What is going in the space? A well-designed laundry room makes delegating easy. Kids can help by folding clothes if there is a space dedicated for doing so. A drying rod can handle delicate items after they are removed from the washer, helping decrease the “chore” of laundry. Staying organized will help you focus on enjoying your family, friends, and fun during the holidays and all seasons of the year. Overnight guests tend to feel more welcomed if they are invited to help themselves when in need of more towels, soap, or tissue. If your area just doesn’t seem to work for you, think about creating a blank canvas to paint an organized home for your family. Closets by McKenry offers custom-designed spaces to meet your needs. is a beautiful region that is rich with history and interesting places. Each year the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance recognizes outstanding persons, projects, and organizations working to preserve our heritage for future generations. This year our award winners are celebrated for their contributions to historic preservation, and we want to share their stories.

Tanner Store repairs

The Tanner Store in Wartburg has occupied a place of importance on the Courthouse Square since it was built in 1906 to house a bank. John Everett and Maude Williams Tanner purchased the building in 1923 and opened the Tanner Drug Store and Restaurant. It has remained in the Tanner family since that time and at one point was the oldest continuously run family business in Tennessee. Recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, the building had fallen into disrepair. The community of Wartburg has rallied to repair and stabilize the structure. Many volunteers have contributed time and/or money to restore the parapet and trim work, fix the leaky roof, and re-glaze windows. Artist Wendy Leedy from Bean Station uses her talent to help preserve Grainger County’s history. With 60 published calendars to her credit, her drawings of significant historic sites in the county have graced calendars for Citizens Bank and now the Grainger County Historic Society. The 2018 calendar features iconic local structures such as the National Register Nance House in Rutledge, the longabandoned Dotson School built in 1904, and the original Grainger County Courthouse that was destroyed in 1946. Senator Ken Yager has been a valued supporter of historic preservation in his district for many years. Most recently Senator Yager secured an appropriation of $100,000 for repairs to the Oliver Springs Depot. The landmark structure was featured on the 2017 East Tennessee Endangered Eight list. Built in the 1890s, the structure houses the community’s library and local history museum. The former 52-acre National Register District of Morristown College buildings 52

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

were demolished by the City of Morristown in 2016 to make way for a new public park. In an effort to preserve the history of the school, the Holston Methodist Conference and Morristown Diversity Task Force joined forces to produce a video highlighting images and stories from former students. The video is available on YouTube and has been shown at community events and civic club meetings. The Oak Grove School located in the Sharp’s Chapel community of Union County was featured on the East Tennessee Endangered Heritage list for many years. It Betty Bullen in Oak Grove School is one of only 30 remaining Rosenwald Schools in Tennessee. The two-room schoolhouse was built between 1917 and 1929 and served a variety of purposes until the early 1960s. In recent years, Preservation Union County has led efforts to restore the building. The grassroots effort has shown the power communities can have in preserving their historic structures. The school will become the home to Preservation Union County and serve as a hub for community activities. McKayla Floyd, an 18-year-old Sevierville Girl Scout, and some friends took the lead in cleaning up the long neglected Esslinger Cemetery on Douglas Dam Road. It started with making the grave of Revolutionary War soldier, William M. Robertson, accessible once again and grew from there. Upon hearing from the local American Legion that the condition of the cemetery made placing a flag on Robertson’s grave on Memorial Day impossible, McKayla sprang into action. The young preservationist recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy and earned her Girl Scout Gold Award from the Esslinger Cemetery project. The University of Tennessee’s Facilities Services Complex is an adaptive reuse of a 90,000 square foot industrial facility in Knoxville’s Marble City neighborhood. Once a nationally recognized marble-processing plant, the building now serves as the home of the University’s Facilities Services Department. Extant features like riveted steel framing, hardwood planking, and a silo were

University of TN’s Facilities Services Complex

maintained. The project has garnered awards from American School and University magazine and from the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Zack Taylor is a “genealogy detective” known for researching African-American history in Jefferson County. Zack took the lead and worked with A.M.E. Zion Church in New Market to restore the burial grounds there. It unveiled a portrait of New Market’s African-American history. Burial began in the cemetery in 1891 and includes the grave of a woman who witnessed the New Market Train Wreck of 1904 and another born into slavery in 1853. It is the final resting place of at least one Civil War soldier. Zack and other volunteers have cleared brush, positioned military markers, placed tombstones, and extensively researched the cemetery’s history.

Coal Creek Miner’s Museum

Barry Thacker and Carol Moore know about youth engagement and that understanding the stories of a community’s past can impact the people of today. What started as an idea to clean up Coal Creek to improve trout fishing grew into an expansive community initiative that engaged youth in new ways of discovering and preserving their history, including restoring Militia Hill, creating the Coal Creek Miner’s Museum and history trails, establishing historic markers and listing sites on the National Register. Make Your Next Boating Season

EVEN BETTER

W

HILE YOU HAVE enjoyed many

fun-filled adventures on the water this season with family and friends, how much you will be able to enjoy next year’s boating season may depend on the performance of the required end-of-the-year maintenance, winterization, and storage recommendations made by your watercraft’s manufacturer. The failure to perform these recommended procedures can lead to poor performance, expensive repairs, and the premature aging of your boat. Premier Watersports has a complete, fullservice maintenance center to take care of all of your winterization, storage, and maintenance needs to make sure that your boat is fully ready for the start of the 2018 boating season. From oil changes, complete overhauls, and customization, our experienced, factory trained technicians can take care of all of your maintenance needs. You can bring your boat to us, or if you winter on the water, we can come to you. Need a place to safely store your boat for the winter? Premier Watersports offers secure outdoor storage at its West Knoxville location, which is conveniently located just off Watt Road and I-40. With Christmas just a month away, how about putting that new boat under your family’s tree this holiday season just in time for the 2018 boating season? We offer quality watercraft from Moomba, Supra, and Yamaha and pontoons from Sylvan, in addition to our large selection of quality, pre-owned boats. So don’t delay. Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Celebrates Local Musicians HE OAK RIDGE

Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Dan Allcott, continues its successful 73rd season with “Here’s a Riddle You Haven’t Heard” on Sunday, November 5, at 3 pm at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge. The concert will feature long-time Oak Ridge Symphony concertmaster, Karen Kartal, and WUOT Afternoon Concert host and bassoonist, Garrett McQueen. “The sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church is the acoustical gem of Oak Ridge,” said Allcott. “We invite the community to take advantage of the opportunity to hear our orchestra play music that perfectly suits the space. I am also delighted to feature two of our extremely talented local musicians, Karen Kartal and Garrett McQueen, on this program.” Violinist, Karen Kartal, will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending with the orchestra. Kartal began her violin studies at the age of nine. After living in Switzerland for three years, she returned to her home state to attended lllinois State University and Western Illinois University, followed by graduate studies at Louisiana State University. She won first prize in the concerto competitions at all three schools. In addition to full-time positions with the Shreveport and Knoxville Symphonies, Kartal has held the position of concertmaster of the Baton Rouge Opera and the Lake Charles Symphony, principal second with the Baton Rouge Symphony, and assistant concertmaster of the Louisiana Sy m p h o n i e tt a , Ma rs h a l l Sy m p h o ny, Longview Opera, and South Arkansas Symphony. As assistant concertmaster of the Classical Symphony in Chicago, she performed several concerts in Taiwan and Japan as part of their Far East Tour. Kartal has been concertmaster of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra since 2004. Bassoonist, Garrett McQueen, will perform Heitor Villa-Lobos’ The Riddle of Seven Notes with the orchestra. McQueen has been playing the bassoon in his hometown of Memphis and in venues across the country, including Los Angeles’ Disney Hall, Detroit’s Max M. Fischer Music Center, and New York’s Carnegie Hall, since 1999. He has performed 54

in multiple Broadway musicals in Memphis under the baton of David Spencer and keeps himself busy in other free-lance activities, including being featured in Indie Rock tracks produced by Goner Records (2009) and True Panther Sounds (2010). McQueen can be heard as the principal bassoonist on the Memphis Repertory Orchestra’s inaugural CD of works by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky and has appeared on television shows, including Oxygen’s Snapped: Killer Couples, TV One’s Fatal Attraction, and Fox’s Glee. His affinity for 20th and 21st century music drives his passion for playing the bassoon, and in a performance of Eric Ewazen’s “Concerto for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble,” Ewazen noted his “wonderful playing” and characterized McQueen as someone who “gives a great performance of his piece.” He’s also been noted as one of America’s “most interesting classical musicians” by conductor and author of “The Real Toscanini: Musicians Reveal the Maestro,” Cesare Civetta. The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra will also perform music by Giacomo Puccini, Henyrk Górecki, and Joseph Haydn’s delightful Symphony No. 6. The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association is a proud participant in the Penny4Arts program. All students 18 and under may attend any Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, Chorus, or Chamber Music concert for free during the 2017-18 season. General admission is $25; a discounted young adult

NATIONAL

VETERANS DAY T

POSTER CONTEST

H E 2 0 1 7 National Veterans

Day Poster Contest is complete! Each year the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) National Veterans Outreach Office, in conjunction with the Veterans Day National Committee, publishes a commemorative Veterans Day poster. The poster is selected from artwork submitted by artists nationwide and is distributed to VA facilities, military installations around the world across cities and towns in our nation. It also serves as the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery. Throughout the years, these posters have illustrated the rich history of our country’s service men and women. The poster clearly reflects our pride and patriotism in saluting veterans while providing the thematic artistry for the year.

History of Veterans Day

World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 am. The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words: Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive,

sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twentyseven of our states have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday; therefore, be it resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring) that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday – a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen in the nation’s history, after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation,” which stated: “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select and which will coordinate at the national level

necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the government to assist the National Committee in every way possible.” On that same day, President Eisenhower sent a letter to the Honorable Harvey V. Higley, Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs (VA), designating him as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee. In 1958, the White House advised VA’s General Counsel that the 1954 designation of the VA Administrator as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee applied to all subsequent VA Administrators. Since March 1989, when VA was elevated to a cabinet level department, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has served as the committee’s chairman. The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities, and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans’ service organizations, and the American people. Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. The Cape Ann Collection – Watercolors by Carl Whitten on the North Wall Cape Ann sits jutting out into the sea 25 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. For more than 150 years, famous artists have been coming to Cape Ann’s quaint and rustic towns of Gloucester, Rockport, Annisquam, Magnolia, Lanesville, and Essex to paint its beauty. “You can never run out of things to paint with Cape Ann’s six lighthouses, fishing boats, sandy beaches, and rocky shores,” said Carl Whitten. “I was truly inspired by the natural seaside light, colors, and flavor of Cape Ann.” Whitten has received numerous awards for his paintings, which have exhibited in the Emporium Center, McGee Tyson Airport, Dogwood Regional Fine Arts exhibits, and in the Knoxville Mayors’ offices. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Tennessee Artists Association, and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville.

Kimberly Pack: Lovenestmonsters in the Display Case The drawings of Kimberly Pack came about out of necessity. Tough times call for some unusual ways of escaping. Her drawings of mopey-faced, scraggly-haired guys became an outlet for that escape. To create guys with lumpy bodies and eyes with dark circles and puffiness allowed her to bring to life with pen and paper the sadness and uncertainty of her life. Pack was born in Virginia to a family of people with sleepy, sorrowful eyes whom even in the toughest of times were always there for her. The drawings possibly represent the small town she was born in – surrounded by mountains and home to a Dupont factory located across the street from her childhood home. There were plenty of characters in that town and in her own family, many of whom come through in the drawings she creates.

T

Christmas IN THE CITY

HE CHRISTMAS SEASON is

quickly approaching, and along with decorating your trees and frantically cleaning your house before your relatives arrive, we have a few events you should add to your to-do list! We don’t waste any time before kicking off the season. Right after you finish your Thanksgiving turkey, bring all of your family and friends to Market Square on Friday, November 24. The fun starts at 5:30 pm with live music in Krutch Park Extension, kicking off the Regal Celebration of Lights. Thousands will gather for the lighting of the 42-foot Christmas tree off Gay Street. But that’s only the beginning – the fun lasts until 9 pm. We know you can’t get enough of that Christmas music you’ve waited all year for, so it will continue on the Market Square Stage at the WDVX Holiday Ho Ho Hoedown at 6:30 pm with some Americana music. Along with the music and the lighting of the tree, there will be added fun for the whole family, from the Polar Express train running down Gay Street to photos with Santa, marshmallow roasting, and more. You’ll just have to come see it for yourself! While you’re at it, remember to stop by Holidays on Ice presented by Home Federal Bank, and watch or join in on the fun as our ice skating rink will be making its grand opening for the season at 10 am on November 24th. It will be open seven days a week until January 7. Do you like peppermint? If you do, we have the perfect activity for you! When walking downtown Knoxville anytime between November 24 and January 7, you’ll discover a Peppermint Trail that leads you to the Peppermint Village, where different merchants and restaurants will be offering a variety of peppermintinspired food, drinks, art, and more. If you aren’t as much into peppermint, it’s still an enjoyable experience to walk the trail and

enjoy all of the beautiful window displays of the participating merchants and restaurants. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without everyone’s favorite Christmas parade put on by WIVK. The station folks really out-did themselves this year. There will be live bands, dancers, floats, and lights, and Santa Claus has even agreed to make an appearance! This will be a great experience for not only the kids, but the adults, too, as it never fails to spread the Christmas spirit to everyone as we ring in the month of December. Come on out to Gay Street on December 1 at 7 pm, and see what all the talk is about. The holidays are all about family, so clear everyone’s schedule on December 8 for Christmas at Chilhowee. Vine Middle School’s chorus will be kicking off with Christmas-themed music as we light the tree in Chilhowee Park and Exposition Center at 6 pm. There will be hay rides through the park, pictures with Santa, train rides, and more. We will also be offering hot cocoa and a marshmallow roasting, because who doesn’t love hot cocoa and marshmallows? We will also be showing a holiday movie. It will be a great family night or even date night. Treat yourself with some Christmas cheer, and come out to Chilhowee Park. Over the hills we go, laughing all the way,

bells on bobtails ring, making spirits bright, what fun it is to ride and sing of Tour de Lights tonight! Come one, come all, on December 15 for a family-friendly bike ride with a Christmas twist. The competition winner is not who peddles the fastest but who can come up with the most creative and decorated bike and rider. That’s right – we want you to be decked out, too! It is just as much fun for the admirer to observe all the beautiful lights and decorations as they ride past, so don’t let not decorating a bike stop you from attending this event, which starts at 7 pm in Market Square. It may not be New York City, but it’s Knoxville, and we like to celebrate. In Market Square on New Year’s Eve, the Bicho Brothers will be performing at 10 pm. All the bars and restaurants will be open, so find a good seat, get a drink, and ring in the New Year with all your closest friends and family while you watch the ball drop at midnight! We look forward to seeing you this holiday season!

Dolly Parton Announces Hurricane Relief Efforts

D

P A R T O N will assist with the ongoing relief efforts around the United States and its territories by making a contribution to the One America Appeal for Hurricane Relief to assist with immediate life sustaining needs of those affected. The One America Appeal is a joint appeal that was originally launched by all five living former American Presidents to encourage their fellow citizens to support recovery efforts from Hurricane Harvey. This special appeal has been expanded to include areas most affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. “After the tremendous outpouring of support my hometown received last winter after the wildfires raged through the area, I want to do my part to help other areas affected by natural disasters,” said Dolly. “I admire and respect this effort led by our Presidents, so it is an honor for me to contribute to their work.”

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

In addition to the financial contribution to the One America Appeal, Dolly will launch a partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the non-profit social enterprise First Book, and Penguin Young Readers to provide 500,000 books to hurricane-affected areas through the First Book National Book Bank. To kick off the campaign, Dolly’s foundation donated 165,000 books and the $90,750 needed to cover the shipping and handling charges to make books available quickly and at no cost to educators affected by the storms. From Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy to last year’s floods in Louisiana, First Book has distributed more than five million books to families affected by disasters, in partnership with children’s book publishers, including a substantial book donation from Penguin Young Readers. Penguin Young Readers also partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and First Book to support their book gifting programs

and other outreach efforts, with a special focus on getting books to children in times of natural disasters. “I know in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, books are not the first thing people need or miss,” said Dolly. “But I also know from our past experience that after some time has passed, families, schools, and libraries are eager to replenish their shelves, and their hearts, with books. First Book asked us to join with them to get the right books in the right hands at the right time, and we were pleased to do so.” If you would like to learn more or donate to this effort, or if you work with a school or program affected by the storms, visit http:// bit.ly/hurricanebookrelief. Schools and programs affected by the storms can sign up for free with First Book and will then receive information about how to request books; each book distribution will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

ROM HIS RURAL Texas roots, cutting his chops on his father’s Country-Western record collection, to the small Baptist church where he was first compelled by congregational singing, and now in his current position as the definitive worship leader for the worldwide church, Chris Tomlin has always been motivated to provide spiritual seekers a voice to talk with God through music. “Even as a kid, when I played at church, I loved the sound of people singing,” said Tomlin, remembering his first impressions

of hearing his home congregation raise the roof in praise. “I had no clue I would become a worship leader. I just loved to play music that people could sing with, and I loved it when people would sing to God.” Fast-forward 30 years and the artist whose humble demeanor suggests music is as much his heart’s calling as a heady career has sold millions of albums, streamed billions of tracks, spawned 15 #1 radio singles and been awarded with multiple RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications, and a list of Grammy, Dove, Billboard Music, and American Music Awards.

HILE MOST entrepreneurs

can offer you a superficial definition of marketing, and while perhaps believing that their respective companies are efficiently implementing a well-thought out marketing strategy, the fact is that very few small businesses effectively market the goods and service they sell. Many small business owners continue to view marketing and advertising as one in the same. Also, the strategies they employ are oftentimes fragmented and lack the comprehensive approach required to transform mediocre results into superior results, usually with the investment of far fewer resources. The most successful small business owners I have observed during more than three decades share many common characteristics: »»They have a clear understanding of what “marketing” constitutes

64

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2017

»»They have a long-term perspective »»They clearly differentiate themselves from their competitors »»And, most importantly, they are “tenacious”

in implementing their strategies Successful entrepreneurs avoid the “new idea of the moment” club, where marketing strategies are changed or adjusted with every new day. They also understand that advertising is just one vehicle for implementing their successful marketing strategies. In order for your marketing strategies to succeed, they must be bold, comprehensive, and clearly communicated to your associates and your existing and prospective customers. You must articulate not only how you differ from the competition, but, more importantly, how your customers will benefit personally from your unique, differentiating characteristics. Successful entrepreneurs also carefully

evaluate existing advertising platforms, selecting those that most efficiently and cost-effectively communicate their messages to their target audience. These different platforms support each other, rather than act independently, and are designed to achieve both your short- and long-term marketing strategies. Procrastinators will suggest that they lack both the time and expertise necessary to implement a successful marketing strategy, but the truth is that they usually end up investing far more time and money in their piecemeal approaches to marketing, which often fails to deliver the desired results. These successful small business owners I speak of belong to a unique 5% club, which enjoys 95% of the success achieved. There are no obstacles preventing you from joining this elite club except a genuine commitment from you to win.

WELL-DESIGNED plan is necessary for successf u l investing, but you must also have the discipline to stay on course, rebalance, and tax-manage, as needed. Unfortunately, John Fawaz most investors do not have a CERTIFIED written plan. Also, emotions FINANCIAL such as greed and envy in PLANNER™ bull markets, and fear and panic in bear markets, can cause investors to discard even well-designed plans. Here are some of the best quotes by Warren Buffett, arguably the best investor of our generation, from “Thoughts of Chairman Buffett: Thirty Years of Unconventional Wisdom from the Sage of Omaha” by Simon Reynolds: » On stocks with good histories: “The investor of today does not profit from yesterday’s growth.” » On how to view stocks: “Look at stocks as businesses. Look for businesses you understand, run by people you trust and are comfortable with, and leave them alone for a long time.” » On ethical investment management: “The investment manager must put his client first in everything he does.” » On thinking long term: “I wouldn’t buy any stocks I would not be happy owning if they stopped trading it for three years.” » On predicting markets: “The fact that people will be full of greed, fear, or folly is predictable. The sequence is not predictable.” » On risk: “Risk is not knowing what you’re doing.” All of these thoughts are good places to start when developing your investing plan. Use what you’ve read, create an approach that fits your needs, and execute. This disciplined process will guide you to make sound decisions. Helping Our Children to Be More Reliable PARENTS, THIS MIGHT

sting a little. The fact is that it’s very difficult to teach our children how to be reliable and the importance that this valuable life skill is if we ourselves are not reliable. I know that you and I already know this; however, allow me to ask you a few questions. If I were to ask your children today, “ When your mom /dad tells you that they are going to do something with you, what’s the chances of that happening? For instance, if your mom/dad tells you that you all are going to do something fun later today or perhaps on Saturday, will you go? How likely is it that something will come up and prevent you all from keeping that commitment?” A few more questions: Do you often tell a friend or associate that you will call or email them soon and then you never do?

Have you committed to helping a friend move, meeting your mom for lunch, or a myriad of other obligations that, for one reason or another, have been forgotten or not followed through with? I know we want to raise children who keep their commitments and know that when they give their word to others, it means something. Parents, this will rarely happen if our children do not watch you and I be commitment keepers. They must learn to trust and understand that trust comes through keeping our word. May I suggest that we each ponder if there is room in our lives for improvement in this area. If we identify that there is room, commit today to not only yourself, but to your family that from this day forward, you are going to do better. It’s difficult to make changes when we do not

tell anyone else about our commitment. We each need accountability. If you’re not sure that you will be able to follow through with something, do not commit. If you do, however, make sure that your priority each day is to keep the commitments you have already made to others. If and when things come up, important things that prevent you from keeping your previous commitments, be completely honest and inform the individual counting on you promptly, so that they may make necessary changes. May we do what we say so our children can follow our example.

Southeastern Dermatology Introduces

Fractora

R. MATTHEW DOPPELT of Southeastern

Dermatology is proud to announce the addition of the Votiva radio frequency platform for tightening of the skin on the face, neck, and body. Radio frequency is a form of electromagnetic energy, which travels in waves. When these waves travel through tissue, heat is generated. The heat that is produced by the application of RF energy causes a controlled thermal injury, which in turn is repaired by the body. During this repair process, we see the production of new collagen and elastin. The power of RF is being harnessed more and more effectively in the field of aesthetic medicine to tighten and firm skin. Fractora marries RF and microneedling treatment. Microneedling is perhaps the hottest skin care trend in aesthetic medicine today. It has many benefits, including improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, pore size, skin tone, and texture. It does this by inducing production of collagen and elastin in the treated areas. The needles in at-home microneedling devices are limited to 1.5-mm, while the needles in professional grade microneedling devices may reach up to 3-mm in length. The Fractora hand piece on the Votiva platform is the most advanced fractional RF microneedling device on the market. It delivers RF energy through an array of micro needles. There are three different arrays that can be utilized depending the indication. There are 3-mm coated arrays, which deliver energy to the subdermal tissue, while coated and uncoated 1.5-mm arrays deliver energy more superficially. By fractionally ablating the skin and restructuring the deeper tissues, patients see significant improvement in wrinkles, skin tightness, acne scarring, and pore size. Fractora can also be used to effectively treat active acne and has the additional benefit of improving acne scarring. It can even be used to dramatically reduce underarm sweating and odor. For the patient, Fractora treatments are made comfortable by the application of a topical numbing cream. Depending on the intensity of the treatment, numbing injections may be necessary. The number of treatments varies depending on the condition but is typically between one and six. All but the most aggressive treatments require little to no downtime. Although near immediate improvement may be seen, full results may take six to 12 weeks.

While there are several other RF devices on the market, I chose the Votiva platform because of its versatility. With the Fractora hand piece, we can deliver the rejuvenating benefits of RF microneedling to any part of the body on any skin color. In addition to Fractora, Southeastern Dermatology will also be introducing FormaV RF treatments to address feminine health concerns. To schedule your appointment or consultation, please call 865-474-8800.
