month when we take time to give thanks for all of our blessings, and we celebrate Thanksgiving Day to reflect on those blessings with family and friends. I remember back to my childhood Thanksgiving Day Photo by D. Roberts Photography celebrations when spending time with family meant everything to me. We all helped with the food preparation, and the turkey was the focal point of that dinner. Special recipes were prepared to enhance the dinner, and my grandmother was always delighting us with a new dessert. I can almost smell those wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen and see the elegantly set table. These memories of family being together are the blessings I will always treasure as many of my family are no longer a part of those gatherings. But we celebrate 4

with them in our thoughts and remember the precious times we had together. As I get older, I truly appreciate anytime my family had those special occasions when we all were together, and I have learned not to take those times for granted. Or maybe you have overcome some significant obstacles that life placed in your path? We all have blessings in our life, and this Thanksgiving take time to reflect on them and be truly grateful. Our merchants are free to concentrate on new products, merchandising, spend more time with family and friends, or to pursue hobbies such as travel or professional careers. Having a physical presence often provides our retailers a competitive advantage when acquiring product lines versus online only stores. Our merchants can explore and test their product lines, business models, and target markets while gauging consumer response and adapting to insights and trends. Friendly competition and mentoring internally among our merchants and staff help build stronger and more successful retailers. We offer a variety of affordable space options, from a single shelf to an entire shop, to fit the needs of each entrepreneur looking to succeed in today’s competitive retail environment. Our focus is to help incubate merchants into viable, small businesses. Some of our merchants have even launched stand alone brick and mortar stores of their own. At Southern Market, you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. EK: It would also appear that Southern Market offers more established entrepreneurs with an existing brick and mortar location a tremendous opportunity to explore new growth opportunities. Susan: Absolutely. Existing brick and mortar retail stores desiring a centralized, upscale Knoxville location in which to expand their businesses find Southern Market an attractive alternative to launching a new and separate retail store. It allows existing businesses the opportunity to expand but at just a fraction of the cost. EK: How would you summarize the Southern Market experience? Susan: We encourage our new merchants to try to imagine all of the possibilities that exist for their existing or start-up businesses: Growth, exposure, physical location, expansion, branding, mentoring, new product lines… whatever your vision is. Susan: Kicking off the season this November 1st through 4th is one of our biggest events, Southern Market’s annual Holiday Open House. Jambo Joins Zoo Knoxville’s Chimpanzee Troupe Staff hopes she has chemistry with one of the zoo’s eligible males

AMBO, A 12-YEAR-OLD female chimpanzee from the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, is the newest member of Zoo Knoxville’s chimp troupe. Jambo moved to Knoxville on a “matchmaking” recommendation of the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan, which is a national collaborative effort of accredited zoos to save chimps from extinction. An intelligent and confident chimp, Jambo quickly made friends with the zoo’s seven other chimpanzees upon her arrival in June. Since Jambo has never had any offspring, the next step will be to hone her maternal skills with training before proceeding with plans for her to become a mom as part of standard pre-natal protocol. When her caretakers feel confident she’s ready for motherhood, it will be up to Jambo to decide

which of the resident males-Jimbo, George, Ripley, or Lu-catch her fancy. Chimpanzees are endangered and their wild populations continue to decline. The major threats to wild chimpanzees are illegal poaching for bushmeat, habitat loss due to logging, mining and agriculture expansion, and disease such as ebola and respiratory illnesses. Zoo Knoxville works with a network of zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to maintain a genetically healthy and sta-

ble population of chimps in human care. Accredited zoos also advocate against the use of chimps in the entertainment industry and the pet trade. T’S SO FRUSTRATING. You diet and

exercise, and nothing happens. Fortunately, I finally found something that works! We all know that diet and exercise are the keys to losing weight, and the older we get, the tougher it is. So isn’t it frustrating when you’ve been working out and eating well but the scale isn’t budging? This drives me crazy! I have always worked out. I have always had a gym membership. I try to eat well. (But I do like sweets and a cocktail now and then.) Recently I had lower back surgery to fix a ruptured disc. I had been fighting sciatic pain for months and did not want surgery, but the disc eventually ruptured and I had an emergency discectomy. I was pain-free immediately. (Thank you Dr. Joel Norman!) I was not active during the months prior to surgery due to the pain and then for months following the surgery. I would exercise but apparently not enough. I was afraid to push myself – afraid that the sciatica would return. The worst part was that I was gaining weight and losing muscle. I ended up being the heaviest I have been. Finally, I knew I had to do something! I joined Fitness Together in Bearden. My personal fitness trainer, Chip Gibson, works with me two to three times a week. All sessions at Fitness Together are private and last 45 minutes. They usually include a combination of weights and cardio exercises that are custom designed to help me achieve my individual goals. It took a few weeks to see some changes in my body. It can be a slow process, but it is happening! I am no longer impatient. I could definitely do a better job on the “nutrition” side, but Chip is helping me with that as well! According to the scale, I’ve only lost about 12 pounds, but my waist is four inches smaller, and my thighs and arms have gotten leaner! Even better is that I feel stronger, I have more energy, and now I am motivated to lose even more! I’ve never enjoyed fitness as much as I do now. Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies such as Humana or Blue Cross. They would replace Medicare Part B if you elected a Medicare Advantage Plan. Most plans work like typical HMO or PPO plans that most patients are familiar with. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average monthly premium for most plans averages $64.48 per month. Some plans even offer free monthly premiums. Medicare Part B monthly premiums, on the other hand, range from $134 to $268, depending on your income. Medicare Advantage Plans also offer prescription drug coverage known as Medicare Part D. These plans can help you save money on your prescription

medications. For 2019, the coverage limit will be $3,820. However, once you pass that limit, you will be responsible for a large portion of the next $5,100 in medication costs. This is known as the dreaded “doughnut hole.” The good news is that Medicare will still cover anywhere from 63% to 75% of your medication costs while in the doughnut hole. We strongly encourage you to consider generic medications whenever possible to avoid this tremendous cost. Every Medicare Advantage Plan is also bound by federal law to set maximum limits on patients’ out-of-pocket costs. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also offer vision and dental benefits. We highly recommend that all Medicare eligible patients visit www.medicare.gov to compare plans or contact their insurance company to find the right plan. Not all doctors accept all plans. Pumpkin Pie Budino Ingredients »» 1 Edwards Pumpkin Crème Pie »» 32-ounce container whipped cream »» 1 cup caramel sauce »» 1 cup crushed graham crackers Directions Thaw pie slightly for 20 minutes. Scoop out filling and set aside. Pipe whipped cream layer into a glass. Add caramel sauce layer, spoon or pipe pie filling layer, add crushed graham cracker layer. Add a second layer of whipped cream, caramel sauce, and pie filling. Garnish with graham cracker and serve.

Turtle Pie Ice Box Cake Ingredients »» 2 packages chocolate wafer cookies »» 2 16-ounce containers whipped cream »» 2 Edwards Turtle Pies Directions In a 9-inch cake ring or springform pan, arrange a layer of wafer cookies. Spread a cup of whipped cream on top of the cookies, spreading out to the edges of the pan. Gently press one frozen pie into the whipped cream. Layer another round of wafer cookies on top of the pie, pressing in to avoid air gaps. Place another cup of whipped cream on top and spread to the edges of the pan. Repeat with another pie and gently press in. Add a layer of wafer cookies and top with remaining whipped cream. Add crushed wafer cookies on top for garnish. Freeze overnight. Remove the springform pan and fill in sides and edges of cake with remaining whipped cream.

TYR Pro Swim Series 2019 Opener Set for Knoxville in January

HE 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series

will kick-off the New Year January 9-12 in Knoxville. The four-day meet will take place at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee, marking the first time Knoxville has played host to a TYR Pro Swim Series event. “We are incredibly excited to bring the TYR Pro Swim Series to Knoxville for the first time ever,” said Tim Hinchey, USA Swimming President & CEO. “The bid group’s excitement was palpable, and we know both the local organizing committee and the city will provide first-class service for our athletes and fans.” The 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series marked the first time USA Swimming selected its events via a request for proposal and bid process. The highly-competitive process yielded many submissions from communities across the country. Together with USA Swimming, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) will play a vital role in the planning, community connections, local sponsorships, ticket sales, and marketing of the event. “We are thrilled to be hosting the kick-off 20

Ijams Nature Center Launches Members-Only Hikes

JAMS NATURE CENTER is kicking off a new series of members-only, monthly hikes that explore areas beyond Ijams’ borders. “We’ve been looking at ways to increase the benefits of an Ijams membership, because member support makes this non-profit nature center possible, and we want to recognize that,” said Amber Parker, Ijams Executive Director. “These special hikes feature a small group experience led by someone who knows a great deal about the history, flora, and fauna of some of East Tennessee’s most beautiful areas.” Each hike is open to only 15 people who have a current Ijams Nature Center membership. Prices range from $60-$75 per person, depending on the length of the hike. Nature expert, Ken Voorhis, will lead a moderate 4.5-mile hike to Courthouse Rock with a possible 2-mile extension to Quilliams Cave on November 10. The trail is a fairly welltraveled path up a small drainage on the side of Sugarland Mountain from Newfound Gap Road. Hikers will experience some wonderful views across the valley toward Mount LeConte. The fee is $60.

The last members-only hike of 2018 on December 8 is a strenuous 8-mile hike of Ramsay Cascades and features an elevation gain of more than 2,000 feet. Participants must be able to climb rock steps and tackle a fairly continual uphill climb after the initial two miles on an old roadbed. This popular hike features a spectacular waterfall at the top and old growth forest with wonderful diversity and record-sized trees along the way. This hike is $75 per person. Voorhis recently retired from his position of chief operations and education officer from Yellowstone Forever, the non-profit education and philanthropic partner of Yellowstone National Park, and returned to East Tennessee. “Ken has been a leader on a national level, helping to build capacity for in-depth learning programs in national parks,” said Parker. “He is an avid photographer, storyteller, writer, and musician and enjoys outdoor pursuits, including hiking, canoeing, skiing, birding, botanizing, and exploring out-of-the-way, wild places. He also has a great sense of humor, so you know you’ll learn a lot and have a great time!”

All hikes will meet at the trailhead. Specific directions, packing instructions, etc. will be sent upon registration. Hikes occur rain or shine. Early registration is strongly encouraged. Ijams Nature Center is primarily supported by members and donors. Basic memberships include individual memberships for $35, senior memberships for ages 60+ for $25, and family memberships (two adults and their children under the age of 19) for $60. The nature center also has legacy memberships, including Friends of Ijams, for $100-$499, Conservationist for $500-$1,909, and the 1910 Society for $1,910+. Ijams Nature Center is a non-profit, 315-acre educational nature center for all ages, abilities, and walks of life. Volunteer Work Day is a long-standing tradition at Tremont Institute. Volunteers arrive at 9 am and spend the day helping Tremont with a variety of projects on campus. Projects include clearing ditches, spreading gravel, stacking firewood, washing windows, trail maintenance, raking leaves, and more. Outdoor and indoor projects will be available. To say thank you for your hard work, you will be treated to a homemade lunch served in Tremont’s dining hall. The event will take place on Tremont’s campus in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 9275 Tremont Road in Townsend. Tremont Institute Opens Registration for 2019 Summer and Adult Programs Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont invites you to explore nature and to participate in a program in 2019. Tremont Institute hosts a range of outdoor programs designed for all ages to live and learn in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 2019 program schedule offers summer camps for kids and young adults, family camp, professional development for teachers, photography workshops, hiking, naturalist programs, backpacking, wilderness emergency medical courses, and more. Program participants typically stay at Tremont’s campus for three to 10 days. Program prices include lodging and meals provided by Tremont Institute. Summer camps include firefly camp, discovery camp, wilderness adventure trek, girls in science, teen high adventure, and more. Register today and receive a $50 discount on selected summer camps. ITH 100,000 LIGHTS being installed just in the downtown core alone, city workers have already begun to hang strands of lights. There’s a lot of effort – a labor of love, really – that goes into making Christmas in the City a special season. The emotional payoff for City Public Service Department crews comes on Friday, November 23, when all those lights are switched on during the Regal Celebration of Lights on Market Square and in Krutch Park and Krutch Park Extension. The Regal Celebration of Lights and the accompanying opening of the Market Square outdoor ice skating rink kick off a more than month-long series of art and music performances, public gatherings, and the annual WIVK Christmas Parade on December 7.

goes back more than 120 years, Christmas at Biltmore enchants those who visit Biltmore during its annual holiday celebration set for November 3 through January 6, 2019. Every year Biltmore transforms into an unforgettable yuletide vacation destination. Biltmore’s design team will weave this year’s theme – “The Art of Christmas” – throughout every element created for the season, taking inspiration from both individual pieces of artwork in the house, as well as places that George Vanderbilt traveled to collect artwork. R E A D an interesting statistic that said more than 30% of charitable giving is done in December of each year. If it’s on your mind to support your favorite church or charity before the year-end, don’t forget these tax tips: If you are over age 701/2, have a portion of your IRA’s Required Yvonne Marsh, Minimum Distribution (RMD) CFP®, CPA paid directly to your favorite charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. Those rules require that you have the charitable gift sent directly from your IRA to the charity. The gift amount is then excluded from the taxable amount of your RMD. For the majority of retirees who take a standard deduction, this restores the tax benefit of charitable giving. Be aware, though, that your IRA custodian is not required to report the QCD on your annual 1099, so you must tell your tax preparer so it can be properly reflected on your tax return. Perhaps you would like to leave some of your assets to a charity after your passing. Instead of naming a charity directly in your will, name it as a beneficiary on your IRA accounts. Why? Pre-tax IRA accounts are fully taxable to your heirs, whereas non-IRA accounts get a “stepped-up basis” at your passing. The step-up wipes out any embedded gains so your heirs don’t pay income tax on those accounts. It makes more tax sense to give a fully-taxable IRA to a charity, who by definition doesn’t have to pay any taxes, and leave the stepped-up assets to your family. You don’t have to give the whole IRA to your charity – you can allocate as little as 1% on your beneficiary form and you can change the form anytime. Lastly, if you have appreciated investments, give those assets to a charity rather than cash. Once the charity receives the investments, they can sell them without recognizing any taxable gain. Also, you get a charitable deduction for the full market value of the donation. It’s a win for both you and the charity! you’ve never heard of.” That’s how master musician, Robert Berry, describes himself. That may be true when it comes to the bulk of music fans but not for those who get into the nuts and bolts of music and how it’s made. He’s arguably most known as the bassist/ vocalist for 3, the Emerson, Lake, and Palmer spinoff that consisted of Berry, Carl Palmer, and Keith Emerson. Additionally, he was vocalist and guitarist for Ambrosia (from 2000-2010) and has worked with Alliance, December People, and the Greg Kihn Band. If being a studio wiz and band member wasn’t enough, Robert has also released five solo projects and has pitched in on an impressive number of tribute albums. His latest project is titled “3.2 – The Rules Have Changed.” It’s an album that was to be the follow-up to 3’s debut album and would’ve featured Keith Emerson. However, as music fans know, Keith left us far too soon in March 2016. It’s about 3.2 that I caught up with Robert by phone at his Silicon Valley home recently. We started with the background to the album. “Keith, Carl, and I had a band called 3. In 1987, we got together. In 1988, it came out. We toured. We had a Top Ten hit. We had a very successful tour.” After a great debut album and a very successful tour, the band broke up. Fast-forward almost 30 years, and the record industry began to clamor for something from 3 again. “I said okay. We had four songs written with ideas and another one in concept. I had

all kinds of files from him – digital things of pieces where he had recorded the keyboard parts. I had a cassette tape from 1988 with a song we didn’t use that I now thought was really great.” Then came the news that rocked his world and that of the rock music world. “In three months, I get a call from Keith’s ex-wife, Eleanor, who I knew well when I lived in England when we were working on the first album. She said, ‘Keith’s gone.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ ‘Yeah, he’s gone.’ “I hung up the phone. It really hit me hard. That was the only time I had a Top Ten record – it was with Keith Emerson, and he was the sound of it. We’d stayed friends for 27 years. Done all kinds of things. He was my highest profile friend. The guy who’s always going to be in the history books. He was a funny guy. Of course I had always had that dream of a second 3 album, because for me, that was the best thing and greatest success that I had ever had as a musician. “Here it was, coming around again, and all of a sudden – boom! All of that was gone. One phone call. Gone. It was really tough on me. It’s hard for me to explain, because I’d lost my dad and I’d lost some friends to cancer, and it’s always very sad for me. But that loss hasn’t also impacted my career and how I kind of defined myself and my goals, so this one was a triple whammy – a quadruple whammy. I lost so much in so many ways. But of course, mostly a really sweet, funny friend that I just loved talking to. He always made me feel like a viable part of the music community, because Keith Emerson was my

friend. It was really amazing! “It haunted me. I’m thinking, ‘I’m just going to do it as 1 and we’ll see where it heads.’ A year later, it’s done. I sent Serafino a copy – the rough mixes. He said, ‘This is genius! We’ve got to put this out!’ I’m thinking, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’ “This was a year of me sitting alone in my studio in the dark saying, ‘What would Keith do here? What would I do if he did that?’ Sort of taking on both sides of the conversation.” And what has the response been from Keith’s family and friends to the album? “I got the nicest post from Aaron Emerson, his son. I can’t remember exactly what he wrote, but it was something like, ‘I know it was a labor of love. You did a great job. We’re proud of the album.’ Gave it his stamp of approval.” There’s no doubt that Keith Emerson fans will give “3.2 – The Rules Have Changed” their stamp of approval, too. E FINALLY H A V E some fall temperatures in the forecast, and I am ready! I want crisp nights and cool days, and I hope by the time you read this we will have them. Since September and early October were so warm, many of you are planting trees and shrubs now. This month I would like to explain how to do it correctly. I cannot overemphasize how important it is to take the extra time to plant the right way. Sometimes customers will return a plant because it died, and I can tell by looking at the root ball that the poor thing never had a chance. There is an old saying that says “dig a $20 hole for a $5 plant,” so here is how to dig a $20 hole: 1. Start digging. This is not easy with our clay, and you may have to do a little jumping up and down on the shovel. You may want to rent an auger. You don’t need to go deeper than the container the plant is in, but you do need to go wider. Twice the width is optimum.

2. Mix the soil that you are removing from the hole with topsoil or planting mix. You want it to be half and half. You do not want to use only planting mix or topsoil to backfill, because then you have made a big clay bowl. You also do not want to use potting soil. Potting soil is for pots! It is too light and will float right out of the ground during the first rain. 3. Take the plant out of the container and loosen the root ball, and I mean LOOSEN the root ball! Dig your fingers or a cultivator in there and pull those roots loose! If the roots are going around the rim in a circle, it is better to take a hacksaw and cut the outer half inch off the root ball than to put it in the ground that way. If the plant is a ball and burlap, we now suggest you at least push the burlap to the bottom of the hole if you don’t remove it entirely.

Some companies are using a synthetic burlap that does not decompose. Also, you don’t have to remove the wire cage, but remember that if you ever have to have that tree cut down and the stump ground, that cage will destroy a stump grinder. 4. Place your plant into the ground so that the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surface of the ground. Azaleas and camellias like to be two inches or so above surface level. Backfill with your soil mixture and firm it into place. You do not need to pack it down like it is concrete! It is ok to have some room for air. I suggest you keep a little of the backfill mixture so you can add more to the hole if/when it settles. 5. Water the plants using a root stimulator. This will speed up the establishment of feeder roots. Continue to water the plant throughout the winter if we are not getting one inch or more of rainfall per week. 6. Add mulch, but DO NOT pile the mulch around the trunk of a tree. That causes all sorts of problems. (If whoever does your lawn has made volcanoes, go out right now and get that stuff away from the tree trunk!) Also, do not bury your perennials or the base of your shrubs. Three inches of mulch will keep moisture and temperature levels stable without suffocating them. If you follow those directions, I can almost guarantee your plants will survive. There is no 100% guarantee, because plants are living things and sometimes things just die, but at least you can feel confident that whatever happened, it wasn’t your fault. Next month I will talk about holiday plants and greenery and how to care for them. Since some of you may purchase your plants before then, let me just give you a couple of words of advice: 1. Whether you are buying Christmas trees or poinsettias, please buy from a reputable dealer! An old tree that was cut before Halloween can set your house on fire, and a poinsettia bought from a box store or warehouse club is doomed before you ever get it home. 2. If you have questions about how to care for your plants, please ask us! That is what we are here for. With the proper care your tree should last until the New Year and your poinsettia should last until you get sick of it and throw it away. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Mizuna B Y H O L LY J O N E S , U T G A R D E N S , K N OX V I L L E

MIXED BABY GREENS farmer first introduced me to mizuna 10 years ago, and I’ve been growing it ever since. I worked on his farm in Haiku, Hawaii, for two years, where we grew six varieties of greens for salad mix. Mizuna, or Brassica rapa var. niposinica, was the most reliable, fastest growing one of them all. Though it is technically a mustard, mizuna is so mild that we used it as the basis for the hundreds of pounds of salad mix that we delivered once a week to one of the island’s top resorts. Luckily for us mainlanders, mizuna doesn’t require a tropical island to thrive. This seed-grown biennial performs well in temperate climates, providing attractive, nutritious leaves for much of the growing season. Mizuna exhibits both heat and cold tolerance, which means you can stretch your harvest window into late spring/early summer and through the fall into early winter during most years. It tends to bolt once summer temperatures consistently hit 90 degrees and hotter, but you can start growing it again in early fall when the weather begins to cool. It grows best with full sun exposure in rich, moist, well-drained soil, but it is also tolerant of light shade, lean soil, and low moisture.

Flea beetles are the only pest that has bothered mizuna in our UT Kitchen Garden in Knoxville. One solution is to use row covers, or you can pull the plants out and start over in a different spot later in the season. In the U.S., mizuna has become a common ingredient in fresh salad mix, but in Japan and throughout Asia, it’s most often cooked in soups, stir-fry, or pot stickers. It can be harvested as microgreens, as tender baby greens, or as a cut-and-come-again leafy green. Farmers generally direct sow the seeds, but the plant can be easily be transplanted as well. Cornell University lists 16

different varieties on its Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners website, but chances are good that there are even more than that. The most common type is green and frilly with a tender white stem that can be eaten along with the leaf. It looks great as a border plant in the vegetable garden or mixed into a cool-season container. There are also beautiful red and purple selections. ‘Red Kingdom’ was named an All-America Selections Edible Winner in 2016, and it’s my new favorite variety. It looks very similar to the strong flavored ‘Red Giant’ mustard, but it tastes light and sweet with a mild pepper undertone. Ijams Primal Playground Offers New Way to Move at Ijams Nature Center

F YOU THOUGHT the only ways to exercise in nature were to walk, run, hike, bike, swim, climb, or paddle, Ijams Nature Center is about to put a little “wild” in your workout. This winter the nonprofit nature center will break ground on the Ijams Primal Playground, the first natural exercise/training site of its kind that combines landscape features such as boulders, logs, and trees with a customizable training plan designed by a physical fitness expert. “Research shows that exercising in natural areas increases the intensity of that activity while increasing our connection to the natural world,” said Amber Parker, Ijams Executive Director. “People build connections to nature in different ways, and the Ijams Primal Playground will be a way for people to get out of the gym and into the wonder of East Tennessee’s landscape. This project will get a whole new group of people outdoors and give nature lovers another way to spend time in the wild.” The Ijams Primal Playground will be funded through a partnership with Legacy Parks Foundation, The Siddiqi Charitable Foundation, and Earthadelic, a local landscape and construction company. “The mission of Legacy Parks is to ensure that this community has access to outstanding recreational opportunities, natural beauty, and open spaces,” said Carol Evans, Legacy Parks Executive Director. “Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Amber’s vision for the Ijams Primal Playground is something that hasn’t been done before, and Legacy Parks is thrilled to be able to bring on Siddiqi Charitable Foundation and Earthadelic as partners.” Ijams’ goal is to create an experience that marries nature and fitness in such a way that the training area blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings and enhances the benefits of exercise. Studies consistently have shown that outdoor play is critical to childhood development and allowing adults to reconnect with their inner child by getting down and dirty with nature is just as important for their happiness, health, and well-being. Rice has 10 years’ experience as a trainer and fitness manager. “Mark’s knowledge of human movement and progressive training makes him highly qualified for this job,” said Parker. “He is a Certified Personal Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine and a specialist in corrective exercise and senior citizen training.” The South Knoxville native also competes in Highland Games, and the games tie in with his plan for the new exercise space. “Training with natural objects is something humans have done for centuries,” said Rice. “The Ijams Primal Playground will feature lifting stones, which are heavy, natural stones that are still used in many countries as a way for people to prove their strength. Having lifting stones at Ijams will honor the region’s Scots-Irish heritage, as well as draw people from all around the world to challenge themselves.” The customizable workout plan Rice is creating will allow individuals of all fitness levels to adjust their workouts using progressive weights and increasing difficulties. The space will feature a variety of options to accomplish seven basic human movements: Push, pull, carry, hinge, squat, loaded carry, rotation, and counterrotation. By blending these movements with endurance activities such as hill runs, someone can use the plan to create an

exceptional physical training experience. “The use of the natural environment, with all its irregularities and unanticipated characteristics, also increases the use of proprioception, the body’s awareness of its position in the environment, and kinesthesia, the sense of how the body moves in that environment,” said Rice. “Improving the understanding of how humans relate physically to their surroundings and how they react to them is functional fitness at its best.” Parker, a naturalist who loves hiking and strength training, has envisioned creating an outdoor exercise space using natural elements for some time. “We protect what we love,” she said. “The Ijams Primal Playground is a new way to create a special relationship between people and nature. We are extremely fortunate to have partners with similar values and missions to be able to make this project a reality. Our goal is for people to be healthy and happy, and we all want the same for the earth.” Ijams Nature Center is a non-profit, 315acre educational nature center for all ages, abilities, and walks of life. of downtown Sweetwater, the Tennessee Military Institute campus has sat vacant and decaying for more than 10 years. However, three historic houses, ranging from 94 to more than 110 years old, continue to stand nearby as vibrant representations of the institute’s history. To officially document their unique history, these three houses were recently submitted to the Tennessee Historical Commission for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as the Tennessee Military Institute Residential Historic District. The Sweetwater Military College was founded in 1874 by Dr. J. Lynn Bachman. The college operated in several buildings in Sweetwater’s downtown until it moved to a permanent property on High Street in 1898. By the early 1900s, the school began to outgrow the downtown building. The decision to move to a new campus coincided with a change in administration; Colonel Otey Crawford Hulvey moved to Sweetwater in 1902 to serve as the new President and re-named the school as the Tennessee Military Institute in 1909. Hulvey led the charge to relocate the school to a hill overlooking Highway 11 and built his grand two-story house on land just south of the new campus. The Hulvey House was built by 1905, along with a second two-story Victorian house that was designated “the Quartermaster’s House.” TMI leaders could then oversee the new campus’s construction and foster deep connections with cadets throughout their academic and military careers. The Hulvey House and the Quartermaster’s Residences are two contributing resources to the TMI Historic District. The Tennessee Military Institute’s new campus opened to students for the 19091910 school year. The main building, known as the “castle,” was constructed in 1909, 54

TMI hospital and nurses quarters, taken soon after its construction in 1924 featuring classrooms, a study hall, reading rooms, and a gymnasium. Wings flanking the central building were constructed by 1912 and contained additional cadets’ bedrooms, with teachers’ quarters on the far ends of each wing. In 1917, a new barracks was constructed. These buildings were notable as they featured indoor plumbing drawing from Sweetwater’s city waterlines, modern electricity, and steam heating. By 1924, a new hospital and nurse’s quarters building was constructed across the street from the President’s house. The two-and-one-half-story Craftsman residence was advertised in TMI Catalogues by 1925 as the “new hospital building,” providing infirmary and hospital space, along with living quarters for nurses. The hospital building still stands and is the third residence of the TMI Residential Historic District. The proximity of staff homes to the campus of Tennessee Military Institute contributed directly to the school’s success through the early- to mid-20th century. Cadets benefited from their quartermaster, commandant, president, and teachers living near their dormitories and spent time in their homes and lawns. The houses remained owned by TMI through the 1970s and 1980s, when the school began to encounter financial challenges. The school ceased being a military academy in 1975, turning to a traditional college

preparatory high school, and closed in 1988. A Japanese boarding high school, the Tennessee Meiji Gakuin High School, purchased the campus in 1988 and opened in 1989, but the school closed in 2007 due to declining enrollment. While the school campus has been vacant since that date and is currently subject to demolition by neglect, the residences of Peachtree Street are well-preserved and retain a high degree of architectural integrity. In January 2016, the property owners of the Hulvey House began exploring their attic and found a cache of hundreds of TMI artifacts, including several glass plate negatives, photographs dating back to 1902, sports uniforms, and school catalogs. The owners even found a newsletter describing the October 1907 visit of President Theodore Roosevelt to Sweetwater, where he spoke to TMI students for seven minutes. The owners hope to open a small museum exhibit in the future to make the artifacts open to the public. Though the TMI campus may deteriorate, the residences formerly associated with the school stand as a testament to the school leaders, staff, and families who called them home for more than 70 years and the presentday owners who continue to carefully preserve their historic treasures.

ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

The barn itself dates back to the late 1800s and has been moved to land occupied by the Native Americans 4,000 years ago. “Historic Oaks” This home is built on land originally deeded to John Myers by Governor John Sevier after the War of 1812. Andrew H. Myers and Marilyn Myers Byrd will be present to answer questions about the property’s history. “The Abbey” This wedding chapel in Townsend was recently transformed into a pub. The Abbey will become a holiday wonderland and may 56

offer guests a brief respite and a chance to wet their whistle as the tour progresses. The Heritage Center will be the beginning point and ending destination on the tour and will feature light refreshments, chances on “opportunity baskets,” and a complimentary boarding pass for the NEW Holiday Model Train Exhibit. This fundraiser is organized by the Heritage Center Guild as the second of two large fundraisers for 2018 to support the center’s educational programming. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 501(c)(3) Museum and Cultural Center. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from noon to 5 pm through January 6, 2019. The Heritage Center will be closed on Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
