Halloween. It’s a time when they can dress up as their favorite character and transport themselves into the world of make believe. I know I always chose to be dressed like a princess and to not be scary like my friends, who preferred to shock with blood, gore, and deformities. But it was Photo by D. Roberts Photography all in fun and, after all, we were only interested in how much candy we collected. There are though children and adults in the world who live every day with physical deformities. These individuals are ostracized from society or they suffer from low self-esteem because of their physical appearance. They are only looking to correct their flaws and regain their confidence, as well as just being looked upon as normal. Thankfully there are medical personnel who focus on helping individuals with serious physical deformities to improve the quality of their lives. And this month our feature article highlights one such individual, 4 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2017

Jason J. Hall MD, FACS, of Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery. Dr. Hall’s practice has been dedicated to helping fill the need for charity in the community and across the planet by going on medical mission trips to areas in desperate need of his medical expertise. He and his staff give back through the surgeries they perform, which improve their patients’ lives. This is their way of making a difference, and it’s reflected in the smiles of gratitude he and his staff receive from their patients. And you, as a patient of Dr. Hall’s, are also helping to make a difference with his “For You, For All” program. October is also breast cancer awareness month, and The Lily Pad Boutique in Sweetwater is doing their part in helping to fight this disease with their Fashion Fights Back Fashion Show. See the details in their article, and have a fun time at their October event. So enjoy the fall season with all the activities and fall festivals. WOMEN

have made enormous strides in a variety of arenas during the last several decades, many women remain reticent on the topic of personal finances. Although praised as good communicators, mum’s the Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA word when discussing personal finances, even with a professional financial consultant. Perhaps this challenge is more prevalent among the baby boomer generation, where their fathers were viewed as the breadwinners and were principally concerned with both the short- and long-term finances of the family. Regardless, the failure to understand or even discuss personal finances place women at a significant financial disadvantage today. A growing number of women are experiencing a singles lifestyle, either by choice, divorce, or the loss of one’s spouse. In 2015, 15% of all U.S. households were women living alone, and according to the Administration on Aging, 37% of women in the U.S. over age 65 live by themselves. Today’s societal changes make it essential that women become more active participants in understanding their own personal finances and planning for the future. Making the assumption that your spouse is handling everything and hoping for the best is a potential recipe for disaster. In my position as a financial planner, as a daughter of retirees, as a wife, and as a mother, it has been my privilege to work closely with women to help them better understand their personal finances and to assist them in planning for their futures. It is also reassuring to observe the growing number of husbands who recognize that their wife will likely outlive them and are encouraging her to actively participate in their combined financial planning for the future. Whether you’re single, divorced, living alone, married, or widowed, the team at Marsh Wealth Management can help you gain the confidence you deserve in planning for your personal finances today and in retirement. “H

OME SWEET HOME.”

You may not have a framed blue needlepoint of this expression hanging on your wall, but we all feel it. Our homes are where we feel most comfortable. Home is where we are truly ourselves, and we reflect this in how we keep them, how we decorate them, and how we landscape them. You take great pride in your home, and you want it to be beautiful inside and out. You may think you need to find a landscaper to design pathways and ponds and plants that express who you are and what you want your home to be, but there’s an important part of landscape design that is often overlooked: Landscape lighting design. The right landscape lighting design can turn your house into a showcase just as quickly as poor lighting design can reduce it to little more than an eyesore. Curb appeal isn’t just for daylight hours. If you spend your entire landscaping budget on plants and flowers, you only have curb appeal for half the time! Good landscape lighting design should draw attention to the architectural details you fell in love with when you purchased your home and highlight features in your landscape design, bringing beauty and

10 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2017

drama to your yard, all while increasing the value of your home. Every home has its own personality and unique features. An experienced landscape lighting designer can show you how to accentuate those features by creating a truly breathtaking panorama that only the nighttime hours provide. A minimalist design uses landscape lighting to highlight your home and walkways in an understated way, whereas a statement approach uses more lights to highlight your home’s features with a more dramatic effect. A balanced approach,

on the other hand, focuses on your home’s symmetry and landscape plantings. If your primary interest is safety, you can focus instead on landscape lighting for security. Today a growing number of homeowners are selecting a more natural approach that uses landscape lighting to duplicate the way in which the natural moonlight dances through the trees and other plantings you may wish to highlight. Regardless of your preference, an experienced professional landscape lighting designer can assist you to achieve the approach that most appeals to your desired nightscape. If you’re considering outdoor lighting, I invite you to contact Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting, East Tennessee’s first choice in exterior lighting, at 865-484-4011 today. Also, visit www.lighthouse-lights.com to discover your home’s true showcase quality look no matter what the time of day.

Showcase Quality Hardwood Floors Just in Time for the Holidays T HANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, and New Year’s are just a few short months away, and you’ve already started to plan for all of the holiday events that you’ll be hosting at your home. There’s plenty to do. There’s holiday decorating to do, meals to plan, and an entire home to clean from top to bottom. But what are you going to do to hide the dents, scratches, and UV damage to your home’s once beautiful hardwood f loors? You’ve tried everything, but the cosmetic only solutions available at the “big box” stores just haven’t worked as promised, so you just keep covering things up with runners and throw rugs. The only solution for returning your home’s hardwood flooring to their original showroom appearance is to refinish your floors. But doesn’t that mean moving out of your house, only to return to a layer of dust, the result of sanding, throughout your entire home? Absolutely not! European Fine Hardwood Floors of Knoxville has the perfect solution to your home’s hardwood flooring refinishing challenges. They are not your typical hardwood flooring installer and refinisher. Valera Tomescu, founder and owner of

BEFORE

European Fine Hardwood Floors, learned his craft from his grandfather in Europe over several decades. Valera has combined the skills he learned from his grandfather with the state-of-the-art technology developed by the number one name in the worldwide hardwood f loor refinishing industry: Bona. Both the skills Valera has learned and the latest technology made available from Bona allows homeowners to experience an entirely dust-free refinishing experience, as all dust from sanding is safely

removed out-of-doors using high-efficiency vacuums placed outside your home, which are connected to their refinishing equipment with high-volume vacuum hoses. The result? No dust. Many homeowners also use their refinishing project as an opportunity to change their floor’s stain color. You also have the choice of final finishes, including odor-free, water-based finishes. European Fine Hardwood Floors has also received the much coveted Bona Certified Craftsman award, an honor received by very few hardwood flooring refinishing contractors. This distinction is your assurance that all work performed will adhere to the highest standards in the industry. To discover how to be able to return your home’s hardwood flooring to its original showcase quality appearance without the dust, the solution is simple: Call Valera at European Fine Hardwood Floors today.

Provision Tour de Tellico

“Ride for Charity”

October 21 From 10 - 4

T ELLICO LAKE

Rotary Club announces the 12th annual Provision Tour de Tellico on October 7. This “Ride for Charity” raises funds to support a number of charities in Loudon and Monroe counties. On October 7, Tellico Village will be ablaze with colorful bikes and riders as participants of Provision Tour de Tellico wind their way along Tellico Village Parkway and surrounding area highways and byways. The event offers four rides from which participants can choose: 100mile Century, 100k, 50k, and easy 25k. The 100-mile century extends as far south as Athens, and the 100k extends to Madisonville. All rides begin and end at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village, located at 205 Chota Road in Loudon. The donation is $45 per rider. Both online and mail-in registration forms and waivers are available at www.tourdetellico.com. Registration is also available the day of the event. Check-in and registration for the Century and 100k is 7:00 am, warm-up at 7:45, and 8:00 am start. Check-in for the 50k and 25k rides is 8:00 am, warm-up at 8:45, and 9:00 start. Tour de Tellico was the brainchild of Pastor Charlie Barnard of First Baptist Church of Tellico Village and Tom Irmen of Rarity Bay. Prior to moving to Tellico Village, Charlie Barnard had participated in a similar ride while pastoring in South Carolina. “I saw this as an excellent way to bring the church and community together, raise needed funds for local charities, and provide a recreational opportunity,” said Barnard. “Both Judy and I are proud to have worked so closely with Charlie on launching Tour de Tellico and are grateful for both his amazing enthusiasm and inspiration,” said Irmen. The first ride was in ’06, and since that time, the event has raised approximately $120,000 for charity. This year’s ride is again sponsored by Provision Cares Proton Therapy Center of Knoxville. Other major sponsors include the Summit Medical Group, First Baptist Church of Tellico Village, and Community Church at Tellico Village. Under the auspices of Tellico Lake Rotary Club, the funds raised from this event support a number of major charities in Loudon and Monroe counties: Boys & Girls Club, Branches, Good Shepherd, Good Samaritan, Hiwassee Mobile Dental Unit, Imagination Library, and Habitat for Humanity. “Many volunteers are needed to help run Tour de Tellico,” said John Everson, Past President of the Rotary Club. “Besides our members and spouses, several people from our charities come and help with the duties of the day. If members of the public would like to help, please contact us at the email or phone below.” For more information, call 423-884-3369, email TdeT17@gmail.com, or visit www.tourdetellico.com.

Meet the Bearden Fitness Together Team That Can Help Transform Your Life Andrew Henderson Co-Owner – Fitness Together, NASM Certified Personal Trainer; M.S. in Sport Psychology, UTK; B.A. in Psychology, Florida International University An exercise I recommend to others for strength training, which is a personal favorite, is pull-ups. They work a variety of muscles and are a great way to match your strength to body weight – the heavier you are, the harder they are! Great cardio exercises that I recommend include activities such as biking, hiking, and walking your family dog. Many of us have “cardio-induced ADD,” so it has to be fun to include your four-legged kid. Personal Fitness to me is a commitment to keeping your body and mind strong so you can enjoy your life to its fullest. It’s about the confidence you experience from knowing that you’re investing in your own health. Our clients discover an enhanced quality of life by the decisions they make every day, including how they exercise and what they eat. It’s just that powerful. I believe our clients succeed because we take the time to educate them. If a person understands why they are performing a particular exercise program and how it benefits them, they are much more likely to continue with it and give it their maximum effort. The very best personal trainers motivate their clients using a variety of techniques, including education. Shea Sims Co-Owner – Fitness Together, ACE Certified Personal Trainer; M.S. Sport Psychology, UTK; B.S. Psychology, North Greenville University; City View Best of 2014-2016 I enjoy all types of upper body conditioning and frequently recommend it to our clients. I also have a passion for running and, where appropriate, incorporating it into our clients’ exercise program. My passion for personal fitness has become both a passion and lifestyle for me. By combining exercise and a healthy diet, you feel better, look better, and, in most cases, live a longer and more fulfilling life. I believe that my personal drive and passion combine to help motivate our clients. If our clients aren’t already motivated, we become the catalyst to help them discover their very own motivation. The key is to take a person’s extrinsic

motivation and transform it into intrinsic motivation! Every client is unique and thus motivated differently. Your mental focus is your key. If the mind is willing, the body will follow! Sarah Watkins ACE – Certified Personal Trainer & Fitness Nutrition Specialist; A.A.S. Aviation Operations, The Community College of the Air Force; CPR/ AED/First Aid Certified I enjoy focusing on lower body training and challenging both myself and our clients to achieve their personal best. At the center of enhanced health and increased longevity is a lifelong commitment and discipline that can transform the average person’s life. The personal trainers at Fitness Together help you achieve that goal each and every day by balancing nutrition, fitness, and fun. Tanya Bruner ACE Personal Trainer; A.S., B.S., M.S.S. An East Tennessee native, Tanya received an A.S. in Health, Physical Education & Recreation from Walters State Community College, a B.S. in Kinesiology from Lincoln Memorial University, and a M.S.S. in Health & Fitness from The United States Sports Academy. Tanya is also an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer and a certified SilverSneakers instructor, specializing in developing exercise programs for adults over 55. Tanya believes that health, fitness, and longevity are a lifestyle that can literally transform your life and those around you. are our best weapons against agerelated diseases and for staying healthy and active throughout life. Becci Twombley is sports dietitian for USC Athletics and Angels Baseball, overseeing the nutrition of 650 collegiate athletes and the 200 MLB and minor league baseball players within the Angels organization. The healthy practices she employs to keep her athletes fighting strong also apply as preventative measures for staying fit and active as we age. “It’s vital at any age to adopt good habits to live a long and healthy life,” said Twombley. “Exercise and move 30 minutes a day, and along with that, pay attention to what you put in your body.” Twombley’s prevention plan against age-related illnesses and conditions starts with a “food first” approach. Diet has a profound impact on two of the leading causes of age-related illnesses and conditions: Inflammation and being overweight. “Maintaining a healthy heart and blood vessels are two of the most important things anyone can do, along with keeping one’s weight under control,” said Twombley. Eating a healthy diet does not need to be a chore. It is all a question of smart choices. Picking the right foods not only makes a difference in health risks, but also positively affects performance throughout the day at work and at home. While the answer is not in a single food or even a handful, adding nutrient-rich foods like these Twombley 18 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2017

Pistachios Pistachios are a multi-tasking nut that has proteins and healthy fats, as well as three types of antioxidants. Those antioxidants help to decrease blood pressure and allow for good muscle recovery. Large population studies show that people who regularly eat nuts, such as pistachios, have a substantial lower risk of dying from heart disease or suffering a heart attack. Pistachios may protect from heart disease in part by improving blood cholesterol levels. Pistachios contain relatively high levels of the amino acid L-arginine, which maintains the arteries’ flexibility and enhances healthy blood flow by boosting nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels. They’re also good for the eyes and skin and have been found to positively promote weight maintenance. Cherry juice Twombley serves tart cherry juice to her athletes after their workouts, as its targeted antioxidants help with muscle recovery, improving recovery time. In addition, it boosts sleep quality to help prevent anxiety and stress later on in the day. Greek yogurt Plain Greek yogurt is a nutrient-packed snack that has many health benefits. High in protein, it can boost energy and muscle mass, which decreases as we age. It can also benefit digestive health if it contains

probiotics. Check the label to see if it contains live and active cultures. Beets The deep red root vegetable increases the size of blood vessels, thereby improving the flow of oxygen that can get to muscles and tissues. For anyone with high blood pressure or suffering from cardiovascular disease, this is a good food to include. Milk A good hydration beverage that has protein, vitamin D, and calcium like we often hear, milk also contains electrolytes for good muscle contraction. Salmon and grass-fed beef Both of these are high in omega-3, which is a really good healthy fat profile for overall heart health. They also decrease inflammation in the long term. Inflammation causes a lot of the diseases we fear as we age, whether it’s diabetes or cardiovascular health. Beyond these foods Twombley identifies, the noted nutritionist has more tips for healthy eating: » Look for different colors of foods at different times. Make sure they’re incorporated throughout the day. » Eat often and in a good portion size. » Shop for high quality whenever possible, and pay attention to ingredients. » Maintain balance. Make sure your plate has carbohydrate, protein, and healthy fat in the correct amounts. Add fruits and vegetables to that to get the antioxidants. » Finally, have a plan. Plan out what you’re going to eat that day and stick to it.

Before your very eyes, you’ll observe our transition into the winter holidays with beautiful gifts, more than 200 seasonal florals, new fashions and jewelry, handbags, and scarves, which are arriving daily, as well as a large selection of home décor items that can help to welcome your holiday guests this season. This holiday season is also very special to all of us here at Sweetwater Flower Shop, as it marks our fifth full year in the shop after our fire and nearly one-year renovation. I’ll never be able to thank all of you for your kindness and words of encouragement during that most challenging time in my life. Please mark your calendar for November 1st and 2nd and join in the celebration of the Christmas season with us here at Sweetwater Flower Shop and Upstairs at The Mansion. Just What is Art? F

BY VICKIE SAL ADIN, OWNER OF GALLERY ON MAIN

ROM THE DICTIONARY, the

definition of art is “something that is created with imagination and skill and is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings.” That being said, how do we perceive art? From the time of cavemen, early humans had a need to express themselves and to tell their stories through paintings on cave walls. As humans evolved more and more, artistic talent became more refined. Still, humans have an instinctive need to express themselves through the many mediums that evolved with them. It is something that leaves behind a mark of that person, that says that they were there and this is what mattered to them. It tells a story of their existence.

What do we consider “art?” Some people think that only visual art (painting or photography) meets the definition of art. They also tend to believe that all other forms of art are crafts. The definition of craft is “an activity involving skill in making things by hand.” That implies that crafts include all forms of painting, quilting, carving, woodworking, woodturning, jewelry making, photography, and a variety of other skills not mentioned here. So just what is art and what is craft? I believe that art is anything that is created using your hands and is done with great personal care, vision, and expresses one’s inner feelings. It is time for all artists of all talents and skills to come together and support and encourage one another in our endeavors and to instill in the younger generations our skills and the enjoyment we experience from those skills when we create. Art is something that speaks to the very depths of our souls. When we stop creating and expressing ourselves through our art, we will be doomed to be an emotionally barren society. I would like to invite each of you to visit Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater to view the artistic creations of many popular local and regional artists whose work is on display at the gallery.

Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt

October 27 • 8 pm • Tennessee Theatre

J

OIN US for an incredible evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. A singer, composer, and actor, Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums during three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel, and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a “Duo” or with his “Acoustic Group” or “The Large Band,” Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural

Trailblazer Award and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today. Lovett will be joined on stage by singer-songwriter John Hiatt. Hiatt earned a Grammy nomination for his album Crossing Muddy Waters, and B.B. King and Eric Clapton shared a Grammy for their album Riding with the King, the title track from which was a Hiatt composition. In 2007, Hiatt was honored with his own star on Nashville’s Walk of Fame, and his legacy was even further cemented with a pair of accolades in the fall of 2008: The Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in September and his October induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be an unforgettable night of music. For more information, visit www.tennesseetheatre.com.

H E N R E C A L L I N G special moments and memories in the life of The Lily Pad, none is more memorable or meaningful than our first annual Fashion Fights Back fashion show last October. On a beautiful sunny October afternoon, 10 of our customers who were either fighting their battle with breast cancer or are breast cancer survivors modeled fall fashions at The Lily Pad. To support and honor our many customers and friends whose lives have been touched by this disease, we have pledged to support them in the way we do best... Fashion Fights Back! As you know, nearly 250,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year... your mother, sister, daughter, wife, or even you! We have committed to give a portion of every item sold on this day to the American Cancer Society. Last year we raised more than $1,000 to help fund innovative research and provide free information and support programs to patients and caregivers. On October 19, we will be honoring 10 more of our friends and family members who have witnessed firsthand the dreaded diagnosis of breast cancer. Please plan to join us at The Lily Pad as we again present Fashion Fights Back, a show by women for these women who are such an inspiration to all of us. There is no charge to attend the show, refreshments will be served, and a spring trunk show from Joseph Ribkoff will also be a special part of this incredible day. We encourage you to RSVP at either 423-3375537 or lilypadboutique@bellsouth.net since we will have treats for everyone attending! Join us at The Lily Pad as FASHION FIGHTS BACK!

Q&A from Our Life Transitions e-Mailbag B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

N O U R continuing e-Mailbag series, here are some new real-life questions and answers to share with you. Q: My husband passed away in his late 50s, and I’m eligible for his widow’s benefit. Should I take it when I turn 60 or wait? Yvonne Marsh, A: Widow’s benefits taken CFP®, CPA before your Full Retirement Age (66) are subject to earnings limits. So if you’re working, be careful of the $16,920 wage limit. If you aren’t working, one strategy is to take your widow’s benefit at age 60 and let your own benefit grow to its maximum at age 70. Then switch and take your own benefit at that time, if it’s bigger. Lots of options are available to widows. Q: My parents paid for a long-term care policy and never used it. I know I should be thinking about one for myself, but it’s hard to pay that premium never knowing if I’ll even use it. A: I hear you! But yet health costs not covered by Medicare are the biggest unknown expense we face in retirement. Consider an asset-based LTC policy, where you fund it as an investment and get a multiplied amount of your investment as tax-free LTC benefits if you do need care and a tax-free death benefit for your heirs if you don’t. It solves the “use it or lose it” problem of traditional LTC insurance. Q: I am 74 and tired of my wife and I paying an extra surcharge for Medicare because our adjusted gross income is just over the threshold requiring the extra charge. Any ideas that could help us? A: My favorite strategy for lowering AGI is using the Qualified Charitable Distribution for your IRA Required Minimum Distributions. The IRS allows you to do your charitable giving directly from your IRA in satisfaction of your RMD and not include that charitable gift in your AGI. For example, if your RMD is $25,000 and you give $5,000 directly to your charity from your IRA, you only have to include $20,000 in your income. And if you don’t otherwise have enough deductions to itemize, this is a perfect way to restore a tax deduction for your charitable giving. If you’d like to learn more about the real-life topics addressed here today, call our office for a complimentary meeting. Have a question you’d like answered? Email your question to erin@marshpros. com and you might see it in this column next month.

For You, For All

E

very once in a while, usually in the quiet of the early morning hours when I’m the only person in the house that is awake, I get a chance to ref lect on what it is that I do every day. Those moments, sitting in the stillness (in front of the fireplace…sometimes with the AC on), it dawns on me the magnitude of what I have the privilege to do as a career. Sure…you probably watch “Botched’ (as I do occasionally — it’s hysterical) and think that my job as a plastic surgeon is nothing more than a never-ending parade of Michael Jackson wannabes, Human Ken dolls, and Kardashian acolytes. If you were a f ly on the wall, though, you’d see the truth. You’d see the mother of three who wants her body back because she doesn’t feel like herself anymore after having children. You’d see the 20-something who feels insecure about a nose that is crooked or much too large for her face. You’d see the 50-something who feels like he’s 70 and wants his face and neck rejuvenated. And you’d see the scared parents of a child that was born with a birth defect, needing her skull completely reconstructed. And that is all on a random Tuesday in September. The question that I asked myself when I began a career in plastic surgery is, “What is the common thread between each of these patients?” Not the procedures, certainly. Plastic surgery is the last true “general” surgery discipline left. We operate from the head to the feet and on most body parts in between. What these patients have in common is that I am able to help improve the quality of each one of their lives. The mother

of three will now go out with her husband and friends feeling more confident in the way she looks. The rhinoplasty patient will no longer feel insecure about her nose. And the child will not grow up feeling as though she is different from her peers. Seeing a patient through a physical transformation that improves their psychological wellbeing, as well as their overall level of confidence, is truly powerful. In many ways, this mirrors what happens when we give back to others. The emotional and psychological boost we feel is worth much more than what we give away, whether it is our time, our money, or our service. Plastic surgery, at its core, is about improving the quality of life for each and every patient we come in contact with. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the field of mission surgery. In the developing world, being born with a cleft lip introduces a whole host of problems that don’t exist here in the US. The child and their family are socially ostracized. Also, children born with a cleft palate are at high risk to starve to death — without help feeding early on, many of these children are unable to get enough nutrition to grow. Without intervention of a host of medical mission organizations, most of these children would never have the chance to live a full life, if they made it to adulthood at all. From day one, my practice has been dedicated to helping fill the need for charity in our community and across the planet, both by example and by inspiring others to give back themselves. For our employees, we provide extra paid time off to participate in mission work of their choosing, as well as a small stipend to offset the cost of travel. For our patients, we created the “For You, For All” program. This program allows you to participate in global medical missions and help children who would otherwise go without the surgical treatment they need. Participation in the program is easy — by choosing to come to our practice, you automatically help without even knowing it. For every dollar you spend — on Botox, filler, skincare, lasers, and even surgery — a portion of that is donated to mission organizations that provide surgical treatment to children in developing countries. Whether it is donating to your favorite local charity, volunteering your time at church, or traveling across the planet to help folks you’ve never met, please get involved. Let’s all strive to leave the world a little better than we found it. Together, we can truly make a difference.

RAY WYLIE HUBBARD B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

O

N E T H I N G is for certain:

Knoxville absolutely loves Texas singer-songwriter, Ray Wylie Hubbard. Any time he performs in the area it’s pretty much always to a capacity crowd. The next most popular Hubbard related event in the area is when he releases a new CD, which he just happened to have done with “Tell the Devil I’m Gettin’ There As Fast As I Can.” It was for that album that I recently chatted with Hubbard for the second time in as many years. Already, the disc is creating lots of buzz. “Well, everybody seems to like it,” said Hubbard. “Like I say, I’m not a mainstream guy. I’m kinda that whole American/Folky Blues thing. All the responses that I got from everyone – they really seem to like it. It starts off with me re-writing Genesis – or paraphrasing Genesis, as a matter of fact – then it goes through all this stuff and ends up with me pleading my case before the court of heaven. “Like I say, I’m kinda old school when it comes to old records, you know? You put it on the first one and it’s sort of like a movie in a way. The idea of doing a single never crossed my mind, ever. I just write the songs and put them together. But to answer your question, people seem to have liked it when it’s been out there. I feel very grateful for that.” Hubbard always touches on the spiritual in a lot of his songs, but this album is pretty spiritual from the first cut to the last. I asked if there was any particular reason for this. “You get to be an old guy like me and you kinda start thinking about your mortality,” he said. “One of the ideas of it is that I hope God grades on a curve. Ha! Ha! I’m not Mother Teresa, but I’m Attila the Hun, you know, so maybe a C- will get me in kind of a cul-de-sac somewhere. But yeah, you kinda get there, but also I’m not very, extremely dogma, but I try to live on certain spiritual principles.” In describing his religious/spiritual views, Hubbard said, “Being honest. Not holding resentment. Showing courage when you need to. Caring. Having some compassion. That’s about it.” As for which cut from the disc he would point to as a calling card for the whole album, he said, “Well, it actually would be the title track, Tell the Devil I’m Gettin’ There As Fast As I Can. That’s the rock and roll fable, you know? That whole idea there’s a musician and he played the Strat and the loud stuff. Was in a cover band, doing the Clash and the

Kinks. Then he got him an old Gibson and a small amp and he began this alt Country thing and then he falls in love with a wild, tattooed woman, which, to tell you the truth, isn’t a fable, is it? It happened to me. That’s kinda the centerpiece of the album. Plus, having Eric Church and Lucinda sing on it – that’s just added frosting to the cupcake, I guess.” When asked what the crowd favorite seems to be, Hubbard said, “Oh, gosh! Well, we’re only doing about four of ‘em, and it’s just kinda new now. I think Lucifer and the Fallen Angels is pretty much root screamin’ rock and roll. That whole idea – pickin’ up Lucifer and some fallen angel and robbin’ a

liquor store and bein’ all that stuff. So I get to put my little digs in there, you know what I mean? But it does rock.” In the last interview with Hubbard, I asked him how he hoped to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be, to which he said, “He was a cat who preferred spirituality to religion conversion. I don’t really think about it like that. I enjoy writing any songs where I can contribute to other peoples’ lives. I’d like to see if I can bring joy to someone’s life. When I play a gig, I like to see people laugh, dance, and sing along.” How does he answer that question now? “Ditto. Ha! Ha! Same thing. No, I’m just kidding. That worked then. It works now. It’s the same thing, you know? I just really write these ol’ songs, and somewhere in there it’s seeing what I can contribute rather than just what I can get. So that’s what it comes back to me. It’s still seein’ what I can contribute rather than what I can get.” You can read the expanded version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music. October 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE 37

HY DO ORIENTAL RUGS,

which are known for their longevity and durability, require special handling when cleaning? These hand-crafted pieces of art continue to be produced by hand today in much of the same way as they have been for centuries. When properly cared for, these family heirlooms, which are crafted using durable, all-natural fibers including wool and cotton, will generally appreciate in value over time and can be shared with future generations to enjoy. But these same natural and organic materials, including dyes, make these otherwise durable and long lasting treasures potentially prone to permanent and usually irreversible damage. While searching for ways to clean their rugs, Oriental rug owners often turn to the Internet for advice. While some suggestions may prove helpful, others can lead to disastrous results. Some rug owners have actually been encouraged to use the same cleaning process used to clean their wall-towall carpeting. Others have been encouraged to wash their rugs on the family driveway. Just imagine the damage that will result to your rug’s fibers when attempting to move a heavy, wet Oriental rug over an abrasive concrete surface. The only way to properly clean an Oriental rug is to wash it in a special, climate controlled facility with specially treated water that is pH balanced and to use cleaning agents that are specifically designed to clean and protect these priceless rugs. With more than 30 years of rug washing and carpet cleaning experience, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has created a one-of-a-kind, highly specialized, climate controlled facility that uses our proprietary 11-step process to safely wash your family’s Oriental rugs. From ionized water and pH control to special submersion baths and drying chambers, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is East Tennessee’s first choice for safe and effective Oriental rug washing. We even have a special process for the removal of pet urine, which can often be successfully removed. With the Christmas season quickly approaching, it’s time to wash your fine Oriental rugs and your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting and upholstery before your guests arrive. So why not call us today? Trust the name that has earned a reputation for quality and safety: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

Dollywood’s Harvest Festival Highlighted by Great Pumpkin LumiNights, Southern Gospel Jubilee

D

ESPITE THE DAYS getting s h o r t e r, D o l l ywo o d i s g i f t i n g guests with even more fall fun – at night! Thanks to the new Great Pumpkin LumiNights, Dollywood’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana (now through October 28) stays open until 9 pm every day. This season marks the first time the Smoky Mountain theme park has opened every day – and stayed open after dark –during its family-favorite harvest event. The expanded operating schedule allows Dollywood to provide guests with additional autumn experiences designed to help them create cherished family memories. The biggest names in Southern gospel take to stages every day throughout the park with more than 500 individual performances as part of the Southern Gospel Jubilee presented by Humana. Additionally, Great Pumpkin LumiNights offers whimsical, family-friendly activities that are sure to make this event a new harvest tradition. “Fall truly is the most beautiful time of year here in the Smokies,” said Dolly Parton. “I love coming home to see the amazing masterpiece God has painted across the mountains. Our folks at Dollywood always do a great job of making sure the park looks stunning with those fall colors as a backdrop. You also know that Southern gospel music holds a very special place close to my heart. I guess you could say my singing career really got started in that kind of music, because our family would visit churches and sing about God’s love for us. “This year we’re adding even more fun to the festival with Great Pumpkin LumiNights, and I know families are going to love all those glowing pumpkin displays up through Timber Canyon. I used to love sitting around with my brothers and sisters during the fall carving pumpkins and tellin’ stories, but I don’t think our pumpkins turned out quite the same as these though!” Families will bask in the glow of thousands of intricately-carved pumpkins as they wander through immersive harvest-themed displays throughout Dollywood’s Timber Canyon and Wilderness Pass areas. Beyond the impressive displays, guests can find a number of exciting activities to create thrilling memories together. With so many carved pumpkins needed to create Great Pumpkin LumiNights, Dollywood has “pumpkin artists” who will host demonstrations to help guests learn how to produce the perfect pumpkin masterpiece. Unique harvest games and attractions – including a glow maze – for kids, a nightly Pumpkin Boogie Dance Party, and friendly costume characters help add to the festive atmosphere. New themed food options and exclusive harvest-themed Coca-Cola products make Great Pumpkin LumiNights the place to

be when the sun goes down in the Smokies. Alongside Great Pumpkin LumiNights, Dollywood once again hosts the largest Southern gospel music event in America with the biggest names in the genre visiting the Southern Gospel Jubilee. Karen Peck & New River (October 21-22), Guy Penrod (October 23-24), The Isaacs (October 12-13), The McKameys (October 6-7), Gold City (October 2-3), and many more provide inspirational music to fill the autumn air. Dollywood’s own Kingdom Heirs perform throughout the festival, while Singing News and Praise 96.3 FM operate multiple stage locations featuring several up-and-coming and breakout artists. Dollywood celebrates Smoky Mountain crafts all year with the park’s well-known master craftsman. During the Harvest Festival, however, more than 30 visiting

artisans from across the country bring their wares and share their talents with Dollywood guests. Craft demonstrations include textile art, inspirational jewelry, loom weaving, paper marbling, bentwood boxes, rug hooking, fiddle making, dulcimer making, and much more. Menus across the park change to reflect the offerings of a bountiful harvest, including fried green tomatoes, a fried green tomato BLT, succotash featuring grilled chicken, and a potatoes with chili and cheese cooked on the park’s famous BIG SKILLET. Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the fried apple pies, apple turnovers, apple stack cakes, and more. For more information about Dollywood’s Harvest Festival featuring Southern Gospel Jubilee and Great Pumpkin LumiNights, call 1-800-DOLLYWOOD or visit www. dollywood.com.

CTOBER PROMISES to be an

exciting month at Amish Excellence with our first ever participation in the 2017 Parade of Homes. It also marks the timeframe when we begin receiving our new fall merchandise. This year’s Parade of Homes will be held on three consecutive weekends beginning October 6, 7, and 8. This multiple site parade offers you the opportunity to visit a large selection of newly constructed homes located in Knox and surrounding counties. Amish Excellence is proud to be participating in this year’s Parade of Homes with a well-known and highly respected builder, Jim Weaver, owner of Weaver Homes Company located in Loudon County. In the stunning custom home constructed by Jim and his team of craftsmen, Amish Excellence will be featuring a variety of quality, 100% hand-crafted Amish furniture pieces throughout the home. This offers guests the perfect opportunity to view our furniture items in a variety of real life vignettes, as well as to view firsthand the superb quality and creativity built into each and every Weaver Homes Company built homes. October also marks the month that we begin accepting delivery of new fall merchandise. We recently concluded our autumn buying trip to Ohio, where we

viewed the latest selection of all hardwood, 100% genuine, hand-crafted Amish furniture for 2018. We purchased a large selection of furniture from this show and should begin receiving it in our warehouse shortly, where it will then be placed onto our showroom floor. I am confident that you will be every bit as excited about these new pieces as we are. Customers often ask where the factory is that our furniture is made. Our reply is always, “There are no factories, just families.” We work directly with individual Amish craftsmen who own their own business and operate out of workshops on their farms. There is a distinctive and very beneficial reason we choose them as our business partners. Because custom order is our specialty and we work with the person who will build your furniture, we can speak

directly with them to carefully craft exactly what you want. Additionally, each workshop is Certified Amish. That is the ONLY furniture we sell; never mass produced and never part of a massive inventory. Everything is distinctively and specially made for customers of Amish Excellence. At the show in Ohio, we hosted about 75 different Amish craftsmen to a “Business Partner Appreciation Reception.” We recognize that the craftsmen we work with are the lifeblood of our business. As a simple way to demonstrate our appreciation, they and their wives were invited to a relaxing time of fabulous food, friendly fellowship, and hardy conversation. Providing an exceptional customer experience, as well as building solid business partnerships with Amish craftsmen, creates a winning combination for success. Whether you’re interested in a single piece of furniture or entire home full, I’d like to invite you to visit Amish Excellence and experience the difference first hand.

retractable screens, the answer is likely yes. But there’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating today’s popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork designed to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often prevent homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens can offer the perfect solution to these problems by providing innovative solutions designed to enhance and promote your outdoor living experience. Retractable screens not only provide much needed shade, but also allow families to extend the time that they spend on their patios by keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are the perfect solution for blending function and comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using your retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, most retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. They are available in variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend the screens with your interior and exterior color and decorating schemes and can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. COMPANY IS COMING!

Guests will be on our doorstep before we know it, and now is the time to get everything ready before they arrive for a holiday stay. Here are seven of our favorite tips to make your guests remember their stay for years to come. 1. Extra blankets & pillows – It’s always good to have a few extra pillows and blankets handy for guests who like to bundle up or need a lighter layer for sleeping. Fold them in a basket or lay them on the bed for easy access. 2. Stock essentials – Have a few backup items for them in case they forget: A toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper, etc. The less they need to ask you for the more comfortable their stay will be. 3. Refreshments – Leave water, coffee or tea, and a few healthy snacks for them. It’s good to make them feel welcome at all hours of the day and give them the hotel treatment. 4. Bring nature in – Using fresh flowers or a small plant will give the room a calming, welcoming feeling, as well as a pop of color. 5. Free Wi-Fi – Let your guests connect easily on all of their devices by leaving the log in information for them on a card by the bed or framed.

Dollywood Earns Four Golden Ticket Awards Most-honored park wins for best entertainment, Christmas event, food, and friendliness

in Amusement Today’s Golden Tickets history, Dollywood again this year earned more category wins and finalist positions than any other park in the world. Dollywood picked up four “best of ” awards and placed in the top-five in five additional categories during the magazine’s 2017 awards ceremony on September 9 at Lake Compounce amusement park in Bristol, Connecticut. “You all know how very proud I am of my Dollywood and the special folks who work there,” said Dolly Parton. “It makes me feel so good to know that our guests feel the same way about the park when they come visit us. It’s the perfect place to help them make those memories they’re always going to hold close. Our people do a great job of doin’ just what my mama always used to say – they treat our guests just like they’d want to be treated. And isn’t that what really makes the difference? “Families can feel the love our folks have for them by the effort and attention they put in to every single detail of the park. They want to make sure every guest leaves with a smile on their face. Dollywood will continue to grow, but I’m thankful my team will never forget what got us to where we are: Going above and

beyond to give our guests experiences they’ll always remember.” Dollywood’s four Golden Ticket Awards include: » Friendliest Park for the sixth consecutive year » Best Shows, Dollywood’s ninth consecutive win » Best Christmas Event, the only park to ever earn this award, Dollywood celebrates its 10th consecutive win » Best Food, Dollywood’s fourth victory in this category Dollywood also had top 10 positions in five additional categories: » Cleanest Park, second place » Best Park, third place » Best Water Park for Dollywood’s Splash Country, fourth place » Best Landscaping, fourth place » Best Wooden Coaster for Lightning Rod, fifth place » Best Wooden Coaster for Thunderhead, eighth place “It has been incredibly exciting to watch Dollywood – which was a relatively unknown contender when the Golden Ticket Awards started in 1998 – become this theme park industry powerhouse,” said Tim Baldwin, Golden Ticket Awards Communications Coordinator for Amusement Today. “Dollywood not only places as a finalist in more categories than any other park, but it has taken top prize in four categories – again, more than any other park. Dollywood is setting the bar, and other parks would be wise to look at their example. It’s certainly a park to watch.” Calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today, the industry’s leading trade publication, the Golden Ticket Awards are the results of a detailed survey sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans around the world in balanced geographical regions. Voters are asked

to rate the “best” in a number of categories such as best parks, roller coasters, water rides, shows, kids’ area, landscaping, and Christmas events. “Dollywood is the whole package – great food, entertaining shows, friendly hospitality, and great rides,” said Baldwin. “It’s little surprise to see them capture the attention of our voters. Each year our selected panel has an incredible amount of worldwide experience, so to be honored on a worldwide scale in so many categories is an amazing accomplishment.” The Golden Ticket Awards are the most sought after awards in the business of amusements and attractions. The awards have become the subject of much discussion by park aficionados the world over and garnered mentions in such notable media outlets as USA Today and the Chicago Tribune and by the late radio newsman Paul Harvey. The awards also were the topic of a one-hour Travel Channel documentary. This season has been a banner year for the Pigeon Forge attraction. Dollywood was recognized as the third best theme park in the country by voters in USA Today’s 10Best contest, while Dollywood’s Splash Country was recognized as the eighth best water park. The National Amusement Park Historical Association also named Dollywood as their “Favorite Theme Park” this year. Dollywood edged Walt Disney World for first, a position the Florida attraction had held for 13 consecutive years. The NAPHA also honored Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas as their “Favorite Post-Summer Season Amusement Park Event.” Fox News recognized the park as the top Small Town Theme Park thanks to its location in the foothills of the Smokies. ARAGES WERE originally built for one function only – housing cars. Times have changed! Today’s garage, which is often the largest room in the house, has become an extension of the house. In fact, reclaiming the garage is currently one of the fastest-growing segments of the home-improvement industry. Depending on your family’s needs, the garage can become a usable living space that serves as a hobby area, man cave, home gym, or even a space for large family gatherings. Its use is limited only by your imagination. Whether your garage is large or small, you can still develop space that meets your specific needs. These tips will help you be more organized as you plan how you want to use your garage. » Keep it clutter free – No matter the size, using a garage as storage for tools, toys, and infrequently or unused items is normal. However, keep it organized. Donate or toss unused items. Pack the rest in boxes or plastic bins. When you need to locate items later, they will be much easier to find. » Install built-in cabinets – Quality garage cabinets are designed for the temperature extremes of a garage and the heavier-than-normal items we put there. This gives you storage that is designed for your specific needs and space. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, designs suspended cabinets that make it easy to clean

underneath while protecting the cabinets and its contents from water. Cabinets leave you with more space to use as you want. » Use wall organizers – Slatwall, which attaches to your garage wall, is one of the most versatile systems for organizing and displaying items. With a system of hooks and other accessories, get larger items, such as bikes and wheelbarrows, off the floor. Work or garden tools are easily seen and within arm’s reach. » Invest in a floor coating system – If you’re willing to take several days, you can put down a do-it-yourself epoxy coating, but epoxy quickly shows tire marks, dirt, and peels up from the floor. Hiring flooring specialists like PremierGarage, with their

commercial-grade hybrid polymer system, you’ll have a durable, easy-to-clean floor that stands up to hot tires, abrasions, and spills. Most importantly, it will last for many years. Following these tips will help your garage work smarter so you can do everything you want – including parking a car!

mountainside, the house has porches on all three levels. The kitchen is large enough to accommodate a crowd and opens into the great room with 30-foot ceilings and an oversized fireplace. The master suite on the second floor has its own fireplace, porch, breakfast nook, and an over-the-top UT-themed bath with an original mural of a Harley-riding bear mowing down the mascots of rival teams. Also located in Kinzel Springs, our third featured home is “Mountain Flat.” The owners had been frequent visitors to the Smokies and envisioned building their own vacation cabin, but that plan evolved into building this charming full-time home. Inside the front doors, which were custom built and contain leaded glass salvaged from an old home in Tuscaloosa, an open floorplan combines a warm and spacious living room with a bright and airy kitchen and a dining area that opens onto a screened porch and then a deck. An upstairs library displays an eclectic and broad range of books and memorabilia, and, throughout the rest of the home, a collection of beautiful antiques, each with a special story, adds to the warmth of this delightful cottage. These three fabulous homes have much more to be discovered and enjoyed in person on our tour that will begin at The Barn Event Center in Townsend. October in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

O

CTOBER IS typically a lovely month. I have no idea what it will be this year. Mother Nature is in a bit of a mood, and there has been nothing typical so far. As of now she has spared us much of her wrath, and for that I am grateful. » Have you done your monthly yard walk? If not, head on out and see what’s going on. I will warn you that the insects are putting on a last burst of breeding before winter, and you will likely run into at least one spider web. (Spiders are our friends, so try to not kill them as you freak out.) Fungal leaf spots are on many trees and shrubs, and you may have had a few things pass on to the great compost bin. Take inventory and make a list of what problems need to be addressed. » Let’s talk about those fungal leaf spots. In general, you do not need to treat deciduous trees and shrubs at this point in the year. This is because leaves do not get “fixed.” The plants push diseased leaves off and grow new ones. You don’t want your plant growing new leaves now, because they do not have time to “harden

off ” and get ready for winter. What is absolutely crucial, however, is for you to remove those spotty leaves from the ground as they fall. Otherwise the spores are re-deposited into the soil and will emerge again next year to destroy your leaves. » If you have fungal problems on evergreens, it will be beneficial to treat them with a fungicide since those leaves/needles will remain on the plant. » Insecticidal use falls into the same category as the fungicides. It is generally too late to treat deciduous trees and shrubs, but evergreens may need a final dose. There are exceptions to this rule with some plants (fruit trees and roses) benefitting from a dormant oil spray later in the winter, so give us a call or stop by if you have questions. » Fall is a good time to plant larger items such as trees and shrubs. Even though many of them will go dormant in the winter, their roots are still working underground to become established. In fact, 85% of root growth occurs during the cool months! You will need to keep an eye on rainfall, however. October is usually

one of our driest months, so you will need to be prepared to water. » Let me repeat what I always say about water: Don’t trust a sprinkler for trees and shrubs! They are designed for watering grass and flowers and are NOT adequate for larger plants. You don’t know how many times I have heard the words “but I have a sprinkler system” while someone is showing me a photo of a dead plant. That is like drinking 1 tablespoon of water per day and wondering why you are dying of thirst. » I will save you the trouble of research by telling you that our average first frost is around October 23rd. I will also advise you to get hollow stemmed plants like begonias and impatiens up before then, because they turn to mush when they freeze. » If you haven’t planted pansies and/or re-done your fall containers, go ahead! There are some wonderful ideas online. As many of you know, pansies are my favorite because of their long bloom time. Frankly, don’t we all need a little color during the gloomy months of winter? They look beautiful either planted alone or with companions such as ornamental cabbage and kale, grasses, and mums (which you can leave in their plastic container and just switch out). » You may be getting a second round of harvest from your cool-season veggies. Keep harvesting so they will produce longer! » Do you need to pick up the leaves that are falling from your trees? Yes, you need to get them off your grass. What I do (well, Rodney actually does the mowing) is blow the leaves onto the grass, run over them with the mower, and then blow them back onto the beds as leaf compost. Do NOT do this if the tree had disease or insect problems! Get those leaves up and far, far away. » How is your mulch layer? If you don’t have 3” or so, add some. It will keep temperatures and moisture levels stable during the winter. I prefer the natural hardwood and pine needles. Donuts, not volcanoes! » Apply a pre-emergent to keep the weeds from taking over your yard during the winter. » Lastly, don’t forget the birds. Keep those feeders and baths clean and full, but don’t forget to take the birdbaths in for the winter unless they are metal or plastic! Stop by and see us for all your fall planting and decorating needs, and don’t forget that we are here all year-round to help keep your yard and home beautiful!

Pests & Mold Can Trigger Allergies & Asthma!

F

ALL INVADERS, which include

ladybugs, stink bugs, box elder bugs, and kudzu bugs, are prevalent in the fall months and come into your home seeking shelter for the winter. These insects emit secretions that can stain curtains and furniture. When they die inside your home, these secretions and dead insect body parts can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks! The most effective treatment protocol for preventing Fall Invaders is to have Dayton’s power spray the exterior of your home BEFORE they start arriving in larger numbers as the weather cools. A survey by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and the National Pest Management Association found that 90% of those surveyed advised their patients to reduce exposure to pest allergens in their homes and consult with a pest management professional. Mold – Allergies and asthma can also be triggered by mold. Dirt basements or crawl spaces are ideal locations for moisture that BEFORE can cause mold to grow, releasing airborne mold spores and dust mites that can migrate into your living space as indoor air pollutants and allergens. Dampness can also soften wood and make it more desirable to termites, increasing the potential of structural damage to your home. Dayton’s uses the CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System (with 25-year warranty if using all recommended AFTER components) that transforms a nasty, damp crawl space or dirt basement into a clean, dry space that’s an asset rather than a liability. New customers can receive $25 OFF one Fall Invaders Treatment or $250 OFF a CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, plus Dayton’s will beat any competitor’s price by $100 with equal components. In Over My Head: Designer to the Rescue B Y A S H L E I G H S AW D O N

T

HIS IS NOT my first rodeo, I fig-

ured. I got this. See, I’ve renovated three kitchens in the past and designed a new one from scratch. No problem. I’d bought a little fixer upper in Knoxville with a 1985 kitchen, which was, to say the least, far from a dream kitchen. The entry foyer opened into a solid blank wall (behind which was hidden the dark, old, depressing kitchen – shut off from the rest of the house but with possibilities). It was full of dark wood cabinetry with what I began calling “Rococo meets Byzantine” style hardware. The kitchen shelving all sagged dangerously in the centers of the shelves. There was no saving any cabinetry or appliances. I’m a cook, so I wanted – no, needed – a fabulous kitchen with massive counter space, storage, and a gas cooktop. None of that existed. No counter space. No gas. And the cherry on top? My house is built on a slab, which means rerouting plumbing and electrical is that much harder. My original objective was to do this as inexpensively as possible by opening up a few walls but retaining much of the original footprint of the kitchen. I began working to lay out my new kitchen myself. Then I read the fine print. If my measurements were off by even 1/4 inch, I’d end up with $10K in cabinets sitting in my garage, which would have to be shipped back at my expense to resize. Oops. I’m a concept person, not a detail person. Maybe I need help. I was brand new to Knoxville and didn’t know anyone in the kitchen design field. I saw Shae Designs’ column in this magazine, called to book an appointment, and fell in love the minute they walked into my foreboding little house. Shae’s energy and enthusiasm coupled with her team’s insights and planning meshed with my creative juices. You might think that three strong-minded, creative people all pitching in on one project would develop friction. Far from it. We thrived on each other’s ideas and the challenges. We were off and running. Shae came back with three different designs. The first two had significant improvements over my original design. I loved them both and was mentally weigh-

ing my odds when they showed me the third design. My concept and my kitchen were about to change dramatically. Why be constrained by the existing footprint? There was so much wasted space and so much that could be done differently. Open your eyes, Ashleigh. The third layout blew my mind. Entire walls removed, the whole front of the house opened to light and air. A huge island and second countertop/bar big enough for several people to cook and prep. But could I afford it? I mean, we’re talking massive changes here. Turned out the third mindblowing design was not the most expensive. I could afford it. Did I mention that their designs were shown in 3D? As we talked and I asked for some changes, they worked their magic, and everything we discussed appeared on the screen. We worked through cabinetry options, and I got exactly what I wanted. With Shae Design’s cabinetry options, I could afford the look without cost overruns. But the process didn’t stop there. I already knew what color scheme I wanted, the old brick New York SoHo flooring I’d dreamed of, what countertop options I would search for, etc. And at every step it became a collaborative effort. They took my requests and improved on them. They referred me to contractors, granite and marble suppliers, and even an appliance store who made my dreams come true – without breaking the bank. I got visits and estimates from their recommended contractors. I could have happily worked with any of the three. Except for one thing. I fell in love again… with Paul Fritts of Ace Home Improvements. On the spot. Then I continued to fall in love with each of

his crew. They are true craftsmen and artisans, and they’d worked with Shae so often that they could complete her sentences. I won’t tell you that the renovation was flawless. Like any renovation, we had hiccups. Some big, some small. But none that could not be modified with a little creative thinking and Paul’s crew innovatively making changes on the fly to make dreams come true. We added severa l desig n elements, additional storage in two other rooms, and storage/display ideas for special pieces that added elegance and grace. These were huge changes, and still we stayed pretty close to budget. As my new kitchen evolved, I was ecstatic. It was worth eating off a card table, cooking on a baby Weber grill, and washing dishes in the bathtub for seven weeks. My kitchen is the center of my home, and every room that surrounds f lows seamlessly. It is the perfect solution, and if I do say so, a showplace. People are slack-jawed when they see the finished product. So am I. My kitchen and dining are ideal for entertaining, gathering, friends perched at the bar, on the window seat, with wine and laughter and camaraderie. Thank you Shae and everyone at Shae Designs. Every single one of you has been a delight to work with. In fact, Shae Designs is our go-to favorite. Not just for cabinetry, but furniture, accents, lighting, and advice. We will be friends for a long, long time.

Stevia contains compounds that taste sweet but have almost no calories and do not affect insulin levels the same way that simple sugars do. Though it has a long history of use in South America and many other regions, the FDA only recently approved it as a “Generally Recognized as Safe” substance here in the United States. Halloween Tips for Fido

T

HIS HALLOWEEN put yourself in your pet’s paws. Try to think like your pet would think! Your pets cannot differentiate Halloween from any other day of the year. Jovial, good fun can become a threat to your dog. Halloween guests may be perceived as intruders, making the best natured pets nervous, irritable, unruly, and possibly snapping. Most dogs are happier in the quiet comfort of their home. On Halloween night, do not leave your dog in the backyard; there have been reports of taunting, feeding, agitating, and even poisoning on Halloween. A nervous dog will bark and howl at the constant foot traffic. Do NOT put your dog in the car or the garage. One half hour prior to trick or treat time, put your dog in a secure, quiet place in your home as far away from the greeting door

as possible. Depending on the dog, you may crate him. If your dog greets the guests, keep him on a leash, as pets can become stressed, feel threatened, and may growl, lunge, or run out the door. Keep candy out of reach, as it is NOT intended for pets. Chocolate can be especially dangerous. Candy wrappers are dangerous and can cause intestinal blockage. OR THE FIRST-TIME Alaska visitor, stepping aboard a train bound for the wilderness is the beginning of a journey filled with adventure and surprise. The trip might start like any other. The train pulls away from the downtown station, the sound of metal wheels on rails building to a steady rhythm. Secure in a comfortable seat, countryside begins to open all around. But within minutes, you realize the trip north from Anchorage toward Fairbanks is special. Around each curve, the majesty of glaciers, mountains, or Alaskan wildlife comes into view. A moose might be grazing near a stretch of braided river. The blue of a glacier peeks out from under melting midsummer snow on a mountainside. A view of Denali, North America’s tallest peak, emerges in the splendor only afforded by the routes traveled by Alaska’s trains. A traveler might then retire to a dining car, enjoy a meal of Alaska salmon served on china and linen, and contemplate all he or she has witnessed. Welcome to Alaska and a train trip like no other. The largest state’s train system has the distinction of being one of the last remaining “flagstop” train systems, where passengers can stand by the side of the track in vast wilderness and hitch a ride. But the trains that chug through Alaska offer something 58 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2017

See Alaska by Rail else unique in the country: Access to wilderness and wildlife most urban travelers only dream of seeing. Alaska is one of the few places in the country with a working railroad that hauls both passengers and freight daily. Only a third of Alaska is accessible by car; the train offers options that go beyond what a highway traveler might see. The 91-year-old system runs through Alaska from tidewater at Whittier and Seward north to Anchorage, then through the heart of Alaska to Fairbanks, the commercial hub for northern communities. Most of the tracks are surrounded by wilderness. Long stretches of the railroad parallel the rugged coastline of Southcentral Alaska, offering spectacular panoramas – all at a pace that recalls the beginning of the 20th century and the Alaska Railroad. The state’s rail system began with a $35 million appropriation from Congress to haul coal out of the Matanuska Valley north of Anchorage and open up the Interior region to development. With only the most basic tools on hand, workers completed the track in 1923, overcoming obstacles and conditions that would seem impossible even by today’s standards. It was joined together with a sledge hammer and golden spike by President Warren G. Harding on July 15, 1923, in

Nenana, then one of the state’s largest cities. Every year more than 400,000 people ride the Alaska rails, whether for a practical means of getting around parts of the state or for the sheer romance of it. Seeing Alaska from the comfort of full-service, glassdomed cars with oversized coach windows is breathtaking. The 12-hour trip north from Anchorage to Fairbanks threads through Denali National Park & Preserve and features seemingly endless views of mountains, wildlife, and rivers. Onboard guests enjoy the hospitality and amenities that originally gave train travel such a decadent reputation. Cocktails and other beverages are served throughout the day. Gourmet meals feature a hearty slow braised pot roast or a selection of fresh Alaska seafood entrees. The vast amount of scenery flashing past is almost overwhelming in scope, so the railroad provides easy-going, knowledgeable guides to narrate the trip. Travelers learn the natural history and Alaska Native culture of the region complete with anecdotes featuring the sourdough characters who left their homes to stake their fortunes here more than 100 years ago. For those who want to spend more time exploring the stops along the Alaska Railroad, a five-night itinerary works well.

The trip begins in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city. With almost 300,000 people, Anchorage is a popular urban setting with all the advantages of a much larger town. But such stunning views and abundant wildlife surround no other city in America. The waters of Cook Inlet meet the steep foothills of the Alaska Range. Just minutes east of downtown, the pristine wilderness of the Chugach Mountains begins. Heading south from Anchorage, the train winds through the wilderness heading toward Seward. Glaciers are visible from the track, as well as spectacular marine wildlife. The train travels to Seward in Resurrection Bay, where travelers will then board a boat and take a tour of Kenai Fjords National Park. Guests will then stay the night in Seward. The next day travelers will experience the “real Alaska” and will be able to go on a sled dog ride, enjoy lunch at an Alaska roadhouse, and get a breathtaking view of Exit Glacier. After the full day of activities, guests enjoy a scenic train ride back to Anchorage where they will spend the night. The following day travelers will head north out of Anchorage, passing through the Matanuska Valley, known for scale-busting vegetables grown under the midnight sun. Continuing north, train travelers can catch what is often the highlight of their trip: The first spectacular view of 20,310-foot Denali. From each bend in the railroad, Denali shows off its different faces and angles, making it one of the most photographed mountains in the world. And if the sight of the highest peak in North America isn’t enough, the route affords views of several of the 20 highest peaks in the country. Travelers will end the day by doing a flightseeing tour of Denali and staying the night at another Alaska roadhouse in the charming town of Talkeetna. On the final day, travelers will go on a 130-mile roundtrip adventure through Denali State Park and into “Devil’s Gorge.” Closer to the ground, blue-green spruce forests, crystal rivers, and wildflower meadows roll past. All along this route there is an excellent chance of seeing wildlife, including bears, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, bald eagles, red fox, beavers, and the state bird, the ptarmigan. Conductors frequently slow the train for photo opportunities, and the tour guides are well versed in each species. After touring Denali State Park, the train returns travelers to Anchorage for a final overnight stay in the Last Frontier. Travelers looking for a shorter excursion from Anchorage should consider a trip south to Seward or Whittier. A four-hour trip from Anchorage takes passengers along the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet to the port city of Seward. Established in 1903 by railroad surveyors as an ocean terminal and supply center, Seward has a frontier-town atmosphere with homes and buildings dating back to the early 1900s. The Kenai Fjords National Park offers coastal cruises past tidewater glaciers, whales, nesting seabirds, fur seals, and sea otters. Visitors can explore the Alaska SeaLife Center, with glass tanks that make viewers feel like they’re under the sea. Visitors can also take a 2.5-hour trip from Anchorage to Whittier on the “Glacier Discovery” train, allowing passengers access to the many tours available in Prince William Sound and the massive tidewater glaciers the sound is known for. Daily seasonal service from Anchorage to Seward and Whittier operates from mid-May to mid-September. The Alaska Railroad offers limited winter service between Anchorage and Fairbanks. From the cozy vantage of the coaches, passengers can see aurora borealis, or northern lights, as they paint the sky red, blue, purple, green, orange, and yellow. And to make the snowy winter even more attractive, special events trains allow passengers to get out into the frozen wilderness. Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 6-27. A reception will take place on Friday, October 6, from 5 to 9 pm as part of First Friday activities downtown to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Knoxville Shimmy Mob and the UT Electroacoustic Ensemble will perform during the reception. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Te n n e s s e e A r t i st s A s s o c i at i o n : The Fall Juried Show: 43rd Fall Art Exhibition in the Lower Gallery The Tennessee Artists Association (TAA) will feature original art by more than 20 Tennessee artists, including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, photography, and mixed media. The 43rd Fall Show is juried by Connie Gaertner. TAA was founded in 1972 and is a civic organization of fine artists with 50 members. TAA encourages each individual artist to grow and develop through fellowship with other artists, educational programs, and opportunities to exhibit and sell art, and it serves the community through classes. The Arrowmont Experience in the Balcony Gallery The Arrowmont Experience will feature work by its current Artists-in-Residence, Max Adrian, Emily Culver, Elyse-Krista Mische, Paige Ward, and Xia Zhang. The Artists-in-Residence Program provides early career, self-directed artists time, space, and support to experiment and develop a

new body of work in a creative community environment. Each year five artists of different media are selected for the 11-month program, which begins mid-June and continues through late May of the following year. Participants receive exhibition opportunities, teaching experience, professional development, and a private studio. Arrowmont’s artists-in-residence will showcase contemporary, craft-based works using a range of media, including ceramics, fiber, mixed media, drawing, and installation. The exhibition will also include a small selection from Arrowmont’s permanent collection, which includes nearly 1,000 works in a variety of arts and crafts media. Made by the hands of current and past Arrowmont instructors, individuals from the settlement school’s days, and past artists-in-residence, the works represent the arts and craft school’s history, present, and future.

Synthia Clark: Anthropomorphize in the Display Case With a background in photojournalism, Synthia Clark is an award-winning photographer with a focus towards what she calls “the little things.” To Clark, these are the obscure, usually unnoticed details all around us. In this exhibition, she focuses on finding faces in our surroundings. When she isn’t completing coursework towards her MS in communication studies or working at the University of Tennessee, Clark displays her work in various outlets and enters photo competitions. From tree bark in her hometown of Rockwood, Tennessee, to faded graffiti in the alleys of Bergen, Norway, she has traveled to

parts of the world photographing the minute details for which she has a passion. Richard Jansen: Painting with Light on the North Wall

Richard Jansen Photography has been Richard Jansen’s passion since 1970 after he returned home from Vietnam. As a freelance photographer, his motivation comes from his surrounding world. Scenic and landscape photography is his main area of interest, and he enjoys the spontaneity of creative photography. After his experience in Vietnam, he realized how much he had taken for granted in his environment. “I began to look beyond the everyday routine views and became a very visual person, which thus transformed my way of seeing and understanding the world around me,” he said. Melanie Fetterolf: The Love of Nature in the Atrium The Love of Nature Painting series reflects a spiritual belief by the artist that a higher power has a hand in all that we do. The paintings are begun by hand, then given to nature (rain), and finally finished again by the artist. The paintings are a study of the juxtaposition of color and line, an experiment in the use of texture, and the abstract, uncontrolled nature of falling rain. They reflect a need by the artist to let go of control and allow the random and chaotic nature of the technique to create beauty. Local art educator and watercolor specialist, Melanie Fetterolf, has displayed at the Davis Gallerias, Smoky Mountain Arts, and the Center for Peace. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. 2017 Preservation Conference to Be Held on Haley Farm in Clinton

T

HE 2017 East Tennessee Preservation Conference w i l l b e h e l d o n Fr i d ay, October 27, in Clinton. The all-day event will take place on the Children Defense Fund’s Alex Haley Farm for the first time. Highlighting local preservation stories and strategies, this year’s conference will dig deeper into both African American history and youth engagement. A tour of the farm will be included as part of the day, and that evening will feature the 2017 East Tennessee Preservation Awards. The beautiful 157-acre farm that once belonged to Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Alex Haley, will make a perfect setting for this year’s conference. Since 1994, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has owned and managed the property. Located just 23 miles north of downtown Knoxville, the CDF Haley Farm has hosted tens of thousands of leaders across age, discipline, faith, and race for robust discussion, sharing of best practices, training, and spiritual renewal. The grounds of CDF Haley Farm include a main meeting lodge, guest cottages, the Langston Hughes Library, and the RiggioLynch Chapel. The Langston Hughes Library is a private, non-circulating, 5,000-volume reference collection and reading room. Dedicated in 1999 in honor of one of America’s most important and prolific writers, the library is used by children’s advocates, spiritual leaders, educators, civil rights leaders, authors, illustrators, publishers, scholars, teachers, librarians, and students who come to Haley Farm for training, leadership development, reflection, and inspiration. The reading room is named after acclaimed poet and novelist, Dr. Maya Angelou, and renowned historian, Dr. John Hope Franklin. A sitting area is dedicated to civil rights heroine, Rosa Parks. The Riggio-Lynch Chapel was made possible by the generosity of Barnes & Noble Chairman, Leonard Riggio, and his wife, Louise Riggio. After the events of September 11, 2001, Mr. Riggio felt the need to do something to establish a place for people to find comfort and peace and to be renewed and strengthened. The chapel resembles a huge ark carrying all of the world’s children to safety. Award-winning Vietnam Veterans Memorial designer, Maya Lin, designed both

the Langston Hughes Library and the RiggioLynch Chapel. The Children’s Defense Fund Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a “Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start” in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. CDF began in 1973 and is a private, non-profit organization supported by individual donations, foundation, corporate, and government grants. For the past eight years, Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance have brought the East Tennessee Preservation Conference to our region. It has become a cherished event for those who love history, historic sites, and learning about preservation methods. Each year a different community is highlighted by the conference. Townsend, Rugby, Jonesborough, Gatlinburg, Maryville, Oak Ridge, Knoxville, and Morristown have hosted the event. Attendees include preservation professionals, architects, planners, tourism professionals, government and community leaders, economic developers, real estate professionals, and others who have found that advanced knowledge of historic preservation principles and practices

has value. It is a great event for learning, networking, and experiencing historic sites distinctive to the host community. Conference tickets are $85 ($75 for Knox Heritage members, government representatives, and Main Street professionals). The East Tennessee Preservation Awards will be presented during a special reception and ceremony on the Farm that evening. Tickets for the awards celebration are $25. Conference attendees may also reserve a room on the Farm property. For more information and to register, visit www.knoxheritage.org/etpa.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Self-Employment Beyond Virtual Reality B Y TO M I R M E N

S

EVERAL YEARS AGO I

attended a luncheon that featured a retired Air Force General who shared with us his decades-long military career. What I remember most about his experience was how he invested years of personal effort positioning himself for a much coveted career within the Pentagon. He went on to discuss his disillusionment with his newfound Pentagon position, where he had once hoped to be able to make a genuine and lasting contribution. He suggested that if a totally dedicated individual invested their entire career at the Pentagon, working 24/7, their contribution would likely go unnoticed. I think this general’s observations may also accurately describe how many professionals who have worked in the nation’s largest corporations must feel about their careers, a feeling that despite devoting

one’s entire energy to a cause, that very few substantive changes resulted. I believe this common sense of frustration frequently serves as a catalyst for those individuals departing the corporate world and instead pursuing careers in the world of small business. One advantage resulting from a selfemployment career, although it can also be frustrating at times, is that our responsibilities range from those of a CEO to those of building maintenance. Regardless, selfemployeds are treated to a front row seat for most every decision they make, unlike their large corporate counterparts. Leading a small business is an incredible learning experience that includes a great many moving parts, requiring that you wear a multitude of hats, including management, marketing, finance, legal, production, and a host of others. The experience can be

Laura Davis

exhilarating for most and perhaps a bit overwhelming for others. You are afforded an opportunity to see the “big picture” rather than the limited view offered in a larger corporate environment. Small business owners typically make important decisions in far less time then would have been possible in the corporate world, allowing them to take greater advantage of opportunities in a more timely manner when the greatest upside potential for success exists. True, we don’t have many of the other perks offered by the major corporations, but self-employment offers you a front row seat to where the real action is and places you squarely on the competitive playing field – an experience that those in the corporate world can only fantasize about. Self-employment offers you a level of reality that simply doesn’t exist in today’s corporate realm.

believes students should be the sole reason for any decision made in education, and she plans to advocate for that belief as a member of the Tennessee Educator Fellowship. “I am over the moon that I have been selected for this fellowship,” said Davis, who is one of four Knox County teachers selected for the fellowship. “I am so excited to be able to represent my students and give them an active voice in educational policy and decision making.” Davis is entering her fifth year teaching social studies at West High School. She completed her professional year-long teaching internship at West while working on her master’s degree then was hired to start teaching afterwards. “I have wanted to be a teacher since the day my older sister came home from kindergarten,” she said. “I have always found building relationships, sharing knowledge, and creating a culture of community an extremely important and impactful part of our society. As I have begun teaching, the essence of community and relationships 64 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2017

have only become that much more important to me. I have learned that the more education you have, the more access you have. The relationships we build as educators are crucial in giving as many students from all backgrounds as much access to education as possible.” Davis earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. “The best thing about my job is the relationship building with students,” she said. “So many students need someone in their corner, someone to cheer them on. I love being their cheerleader. I love when I am teaching and that light bulb goes off for the first time or when a student who has barely spoken in class contributes to class discussion. Building relationships and seeing students grow into amazing people is the absolute best part of our job. We are so, so, so lucky to be educators.” Davis’ days are spent teaching classes, grading, lesson planning, emailing parents,

Building relationships and seeing students grow into amazing people is the absolute best part of our job. We are so, so, so lucky to be educators.” and tutoring. She arrives at school around 7 am and stays until 5:30 pm. “Our students are often faced with challenges and go through struggles that, as adults, we may have never experienced,” she said. “Many of my students have never had a strong, positive influence in their lives, therefore making it very difficult for them to properly advocate for themselves. The challenge comes from meeting the student where they are, finding out what motivates them, and letting them know that you are going to be their champion.” Davis looks forward to networking with other teachers around the state and representing students of all backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and learning abilities. “We can only keep improving if we keep striving to do so, and I think this fellowship will allow for this,” she said. “I am so excited!”

This is a n i ncrea si n g ly i mpor t a nt John Fawaz question today as a CERTIFIED growing number of people FINANCIAL a re prov iding f ina ncia l PLANNER™ assistance to not only their children, but also their grandchildren, which may be at the expense of their own retirement. Having a financial plan today can help guide your decisions now and in the years to come and provide the financial security you hope to have in retirement. The ongoing tracking of your expenditures, like stepping on the scale, provides an important reality check. The more we consciously focus on our spending, the less likely we will be to avoid overspending. But like exercising or dieting, we know it’s good for us, but it can be hard to do consistently. Today a growing number of largely free online tools are available to help you track your expenses. Companies such as Mint.com and Yodlee MoneyCenter can import and aggregate data from your credit card, bank, and brokerage accounts. They break down your spending into categories, such as dining and vacation. Some of these online tools can even track specific items such as how much you spend on coffee. However, these tools only provide a fraction of the guidance an advisor can offer, so incorporating both into your overall financial plan may prove to be the most beneficial. Once you know where your money is being spent, identifying areas to make cuts that can make a real difference becomes easier. You may want to strongly consider having a monthly meeting with your spouse. If you’re not married, a trusted confidant is an option. This meeting should include reviewing where you’ve been spending money and anticipated expenditures, both short and long term. It may lead to some very interesting conversations. Having both parties involved – discussing goals and objectives, where you are today and where you want to be in the future – can be helpful. Try asking yourself this question when making a large purchase: Do I need this item, or do I simply want the item? One of the most important things you can do to secure a comfortable retirement is save money. A key to your success will be your ability to delay gratification. Saving is crucial to developing that ability and imperative for anyone who wants to acquire and grow wealth.

Live for the Greater Good I

LOVE BEING a Volunteer! What a

great state we live in and what greater compliment can we be given than to be home of the volunteers. Ladies and gentlemen are always engaged in a cause that is bigger than themselves. I hope that we all sacrifice (give up something of value for something of greater value) a little time each month to help lift the burdens of others. What is our cause? What is our passion? What burdens have we made lighter this week? Ladies and gentlemen, what a privilege it is to be able to help build, protect, comfort, and restore people’s lives. Knoxville has countless organizations that are doing amazing work right here in our backyard, but they need help. All the

good intentions in the world, and even all the money in the world, cannot heal the way two hands, a sympathetic heart, and a spirit of giving can. Do our children watch us serve others regularly? Are we raising a generation that looks at the goodness of their life as a responsibility? We live in our nice homes, and we have garages and closets that are so full of stuff that we want to build bigger homes and bigger closets to fit more stuff in. But are we also showing our children by our example that because we have been given a lot, we must be generous givers? Do we want to be happier? Do we want our children to be less selfish and more compassionate? Show them what giving looks like. Find an organization that you

can give of your time, then share your experiences with your children. Find an organization where your children can volunteer as well and spend some time as a family in service. The only way to truly teach our children that people are more valuable than all things is to allow them to watch us put everything to the side to serve others. May we each live worthy to call ourselves a Volunteer and to wear our orange and white with pride.

Winter Skin Solutions M

ANY OF US across the south-

east have already experienced the first of Old Man Winter’s throes: Here in East Tennessee, we’ve woken up to frosty mornings and look forward to seeing the season’s first flurries. Though the autumn season means snuggling up to the coming stretch of holidays, good food, and family, it also means that it’s time to adjust your skincare regimen to combat the dry winter skin that usually comes with the cooler temps and drier air. Here are a few simple tips you can follow to avoid a flaky face, cracked hands, chapped lips, and scaly legs and keep your skin smooth and supple all winter long: » Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – but be smart about it. Regardless of your skin type or the season, it’s important to make sure that moisturizing is part of your skin care regimen. When the season has your skin feeing tighter or you’re seeing flakes or scales, it’s time to increase the amount of moisture you’re putting on your skin from head to toe. Though your first thought might be to reach for the heaviest, richest formula you can find, it’s important to think about your skin type. If you break out easy, it might be wise to avoid a heavy cream. Generally speaking, creams are heavier than lotions, which are heavier than

gels. Dr. Doppelt stresses that the ingredients in a product are more important than the viscosity. For example, those with acne-prone skin likely want to avoid moisturizers with oil or petrolatum. » Keep showers and baths short. Even though a long, hot bath or shower might feel like a good way to warm up on a cool day, it’s not good for your skin. Dr. Doppelt frequently reminds his patients that water is not hydrating for the skin, and exposure to hot water can strip the skin of its natural, protective oils. If your skin is very dry, consider cleansing with a mild hydrating cleanser and apply a moisturizer all over your body after your shower. » Hydrate from the inside out. It’s true: You are what you eat. Make the most of the diet-skin connection by eating foods high in water content to hydrate your skin from the inside out. Think about adding fruits and veggies like celery, tomatoes, zucchini, apples, oranges, and melon to your diet. Additionally, foods high in zinc and vitamin C can support your body’s production of skin-saving collagen and elastin. And, of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water every day. » Prevention is key. Many of us are prone to dry, cracked hands this time of year. In this case, prevention is

the best treatment. It is essential to moisturize the hands multiple times a day. If you must wash your hands frequently (more than a dozen or so times a day), consider substituting a hand-sanitizer gel or wipes for some of the soap-and-water sessions. This will limit your exposure to the moisture-zapping hot water. If your hands are still dry and chapped even after less washing and more moisturizing, consider making an appointment with Dr. Doppelt, as your chapped skin might be caused by a condition like eczema or psoriasis.
