IHAVE BEEN road-tripping. A lot. Recently, I spent two weeks in the DC area - with one week back home in Knoxville in between! Both were family motived so worth the 8+ hours drive each way. The first excursion was a planned visit with Brett’s brother that included a Cafferty Family Reunion of sorts celebrating an 80th and a 20th birthday on the banks of the Chesapeake Baydelightful, as the breeze really helped with the heat! The second trip was for a funeral on my mom’s side of the family. It’s always nice to reconnect with relatives that haven’t been seen in a while, but it’s bittersweet to do so with a loss being the tie that binds. And in a room packed with people (Barbara was so humble that she would have been surprised at the turnout), there was absolutely no breeze, none at all, to help with that heat!

Hours of Business

Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Everything Knoxville is distributed from Downtown Knoxville to hundreds of neighborhoods in Bearden, West Knoxville, Farragut, Hardin Valley and beyond.

As a road trip family, the traveling by car has never bothered me (I slept through just about every car trip growing up), and I enjoy driving with the changing scenery enough that I can deal with bouts of heavy traffic. To me, the best part is the focused (or UNfocused) attention you can give each other. When Brett and I are home, our topics of conversation tend to be about the magazine, the house, and the To-Do List. It’s pleasant to be able to just talk without an agenda. My mom and I really enjoyed our time together also. We haven’t been able to just “visit” like that in years! While I would not have chosen to drive that far twice in a month’s time, both trips were worth the time and energy. Not only was I able to see and catch up with family that is not usually readily accessible, I also got the added benefit of reconnecting with my traveling companions - nice!

Restyle Your Fur Event

October 4th and 5th from 10 am to 5:30 pm

DO YOU HAVE a sentimental fur stole, jacket, or coat hanging in your closet not being worn? Let Restyle Your Fur perform an unforgettable “trans-furmation” by having expert furriers:

• Convert it into a fabulous vest or 2-in-1 jacket with removable sleeves.

• Make a cuddly teddy bear, pillow, or throw.

• Enlarge, downsize, or repair your garment.

• Shear it to update the look.

Fur is one of the few materials that can be stripped apart and entirely restyled. Beyond alterations, it can be sheared to a short plush, updated to a different style, or, most commonly, added as fur collars, cuffs, or lining for raincoats and everyday coats to add luxury and style. At our Restyle Your Fur event, we will first assess the condition of the fur of your coat and then discuss updating and restyling options for you. Restyle Your Fur is proud to make perfect fur alterations with always on time delivery. If you were lucky enough to receive a fur coat from past generations, it may require a restyle to keep up with today’s fashion trends. Updating your furs will give you a new piece you can comfortably wear and even pass down to younger generations.

Restyle Your Fur is an independent business that continues to fuel the ever-evolving restyling market. All furs are restyled in the United States by their highly qualified professionals. To learn more about Restyle Your Fur, visit RestyleYourFur.com. The Lily Pad is thrilled to partner with them for this event! The Lily Pad Boutique

Design a Productive Workspace with a Family Home Office

WHEN YOU were growing up, where did you study? Perhaps in your bedroom, on the couch, or sitting at the dining room table. What about your work today? Once again, you may be searching for a place to concentrate. With organized storage in a family home office you can give yourself - and your brood - a productive area to learn, work, and bond. Here are a few ideas:

Create Workstations That Work

Design multiple work areas to fit your family members with space-saving organized storage. Use shelves to separate desk spaces and give each person plenty of elbow room. Add cabinetry “lockers” to hold backpacks, school supplies, and electronics and slatwall with hooks and containers to house pencils, pens, scissors, rulers, and more. And don’t forget pull-out desk surfaces for more room to create.

Design a Multi-Purpose Island

A center island with stools fits the bill when working on large school projects and can also serve as a “conference table” for family pow-wows. On nights and weekends, the area can transform into a relaxing craft space or handy gift-wrapping surface. Custommeasured cabinets and shelves keep the area clutter-free, and

ITa power strip will keep the current flowing.

Build a Nook for More Than Books

A cozy bench seat with built-in bookcases will give family members a quiet place to land whether reading, attending virtual meetings, or simply journaling. To aid in concentration, choose relaxing hues from a wide range of storage component finishes, and add LED lights to reduce eyestrain day or night.

This school year, invest in a productive family home office that will cut down on clutter and increase inspiration. The design team at Closets by McKenry can help you maximize every inch of your space and every dollar in your budget. We’re not a national franchise, so your money will stay local to support the economy. Call today, and keep your loved ones from searching around the house for a place to work. Your home’s value - and everyone’s quality of life - will receive an A+!

Wedding Bells, Bouquets, and Brightening of Days!

MIGHT JUST be the most wonderful time of the year for all of us at Random Acts of Flowers. Can’t you just hear those wedding bells ringing? Or picture the beautiful cascading floral arrangements and colorful bridal bouquets? We can, and we are thrilled. The summer months bring such a variety of gorgeous flowers for us to work with, especially those that come from the many weddings that happen this time of year.

Random Acts of Flowers relies upon in-kind donations of flowers to sustain our mission. All of the flowers we receive would be otherwise discarded after an event or if left unsold at a grocery store or wholesale floral supply store. These flowers have a much longer life to live, and the joy that they bring can so easily be extended.

The moments and milestones we celebrate in our life are filled with so much love and happiness, and in those times of celebration, we so often surround ourselves with beautiful things like flowers to mark those occasions. Donating your wedding or event flowers after the ceremony or party is over is a wonderful way to continue that celebration of love and happiness and share that with someone in our community who is really struggling. What begins as your joy can so beautifully become someone else’s hope.

Random Acts of Flowers’ volunteers and staff coordinate with many florists, event centers, and wedding venues to pick up flowers after the events have concluded at no cost. For more information on how to donate your wedding flowers or floral arrangements from an event or memorial, please contact us at operations@randomactsofflowers.org or call us at 865-633-9082.

A Piece of Knox County History:

Dixie Highway Garden Club

DIXIE HIGHWAY Garden Club, founded by Carolyn P. Brown, is 100 years old. She and her husband, John, were wealthy residents known for their restoration of Bleak House - a civil war era home built by the Armstrong family on Kingston Pike (now located between Sequoyah Hills and the UT campus). In the early 1900s, the Browns restored it to its Italianate glory and renamed it “Casa Modena.” Carolyn was famous for her renovation of the terraced gardens leading down to the Tennessee River. Although Carolyn’s family unfortunately predeceased her, her estate built the first UT Student Center.

While living in ancestral homes, the founders were modern thinkers who named their club after the newly completed Dixie Highway, a series of roads connecting the Midwest with sunny Florida. Early automobile dealer Carl Fisher had the idea for this “highway” to promote auto travel and boost his real estate investments in Miami Beach. Many other businessmen, along with local and state governments, jumped on board to promote auto travel tourism. The eastern route of the Dixie Highway led right down Kingston Pike (US Route 70). The federal interstate highway system has long since usurped the Dixie Highway, but Knoxville has a few remnants - like Dixie Lee Junction, where Kingston Pike and Lee Highway split.

In the 1920s, Garden Clubs were all the rage with an emphasis on helping women decide what varieties of fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants to grow. They expanded beyond horticulture to include floral design and civic and environmental responsibility.

Have you seen a Blue Star or Gold Star Marker honoring members of our military? Those are a bit of Dixie Highway GC’s civic work.

The Tennessee Federation of Garden Club’s State Headquarters are here at the historic Racheff House & Gardens & Arboretum. Ivan Racheff bought Knoxville Iron Works in 1947, then began a garden on the site of a former steel mill junk pile next to the 1902 house used as the mill’s office. He gifted the house and garden to the Tennessee Federation in 1970, and it is now a public arboretum - a wonderful place to spend some time in a beautiful garden. (Racheff Gardens has also been a featured Open Garden for Dogwood Arts.)

Many of the Dixie Highway GC’s current members live in West Knoxville and Farragut, close to Dixie Highway. In addition to juried flower shows, the members help with Racheff House and local projects like landscaping Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding (STAR) and Wreaths Across America, as well as donating to many local organizations. The club will be celebrating its centennial on September 12, 2024, at Carolyn P. Brown’s “Casa Modena.”

Plein Air Art Event

September 21-28 in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

PLEIN AIR SMOKIES

will once again bring 20 nationally acclaimed artists to paint “en plein air” (outdoors) throughout the national park. For the 2024 event, artists were selected through a juror process. More than 100 artists across the country applied, and 18 were selected to join last year’s Best in Show and Quick Draw winners, for a total of 20 participating artists. Artists will be positioned across the park throughout the week, with locations such as Cades Cove on Monday and Elkmont on Tuesday and Wednesday.

National Parks provide an inspiring place for artists to paint “en plein air.” Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) is “world-renowned for its diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture.”

Weather and light composition can change rapidly so painting outdoors will be a challenge for the artists.

These one-of-a-kind paintings will be available for sale at a Collectors Soirée on September 27 in downtown Knoxville at

Regas Square Events. Join the artists for an exclusive evening of hors d’oeuvres, beverages, viewings of the artists’ works from the week, awards presentation, and the opportunity to purchase paintings before the public sale. On Saturday, September 28, all remaining artwork will be sold at a free event open to the public from 10 am to 3 pm at Regas Square Events.

What is “Plein Air” Painting?

Plein Air painting is the practice of painting landscape pictures outdoors. The purpose is to create intense impression of the open air (French: “en plein air”) in a landscape painting. En plein air painting was essential for the Impressionist Movement to take place. Impressionism is what the artist interprets as taking place at a certain place at a certain time - changing of shadows, shimmering of water, and movement of people. Impressionists start and finish their paintings outdoors to be able to depict what they would later be so famous for - capturing their impression of life.

Proceeds Benefit GSMNP

Event proceeds help fund projects and programs that support the park’s efforts

to preserve historic and natural resources while providing a safe, enjoyable experience to millions of annual visitors. Whether you’re a first-time art buyer or a long-time collector, this event has something for every Smokies enthusiast.

Join us for the adventure as these world-renowned Plein Air artists travel to our beloved park to capture the energy and soul of the Smokies! For the complete schedule of events, Collectors Soiree tickets, and more information, visit FriendsOfTheSmokies.org/ plein-air.

The Kennedy Where Every Visit Feels Like a Special Occasion

KNOXVILLE HAS A new downtown spot that you won’t want to miss! The Kennedy is an elevated gastropub on the corner of Gay Street and Union Avenue that has quickly become the talk of the town. Open daily for lunch and dinner, they also offer live music and a latenight menu after 9 pm. Reservations are recommended but not required, and the bar is a prime spot to watch the expertly crafted cocktails come to life.

For those who have been inside this building in the past, you will be amazed to see what they have done with the space. I can’t get enough! Upon entering The Kennedy, you are immediately struck by the tasteful blend of contemporary design and vintage touches. On top of the ambiance, the attentive and knowledgeable staff further elevate the atmosphere, ensuring that every visit feels like a special occasion.

The Kennedy’s menu offers a variety of dishes for any palate, whether you’re feeling adventurous or like to stick to what you know. For starters, they offer mini handbreaded corn dogs or wings beside bacon

wrapped dates with goat cheese, pumpkin seed pesto, and a Calabrian chili-tomato sauce (mouthwatering good!) for those who are a bit more adventurous.

For dinner, you have so many delicious options - from handhelds, to pizzas, to the

chef’s seasonal fish, which is a must try. I am a big pizza girl, so I usually order the pepperoni hot honey pizza; however, I sub the classic tomato sauce for the pink vodka sauce. It is heaven sent. Speaking of heaven sent, don’t forget to order truffle fries. They are sprinkled with white truffle oil, grana padano cheese, and served with a black garlic aioli sauce. Need I say more?

Complementing the food is an impressive drink selection, including beers, fine wines, signature cocktails, and mocktails that are as inventive as they are refreshing. The Britt Splits is a side-by-side cocktail so you get the best of both worlds when you can’t decide on just one. It’s my go-to! Shareable drink options are as fun to look at as they are to sip on. The Shake & Bake is served in a circular pitcher filled with exotic fruits, so it changes colors and flavors as it sits.

What sets The Kennedy apart is its ability to cater to a diverse clientele while maintaining an air of exclusivity. Whether you’re seeking a casual evening out with friends, a romantic dinner for two, or a sophisticated venue for a business meeting, The Kennedy provides an ideal setting. Be sure to check out this must-visit destination soon and tell them Kelly’s Belly sent you!

Introducing Davroe!

ROSS THE BOSS is excited to announce the addition of a new, exclusive product line to our salon shelves. Davroe, a family-owned Australian company, has been sharing great hair care for 90 years! Davroe is fairly new to the U.S. with only one distributor currently - Salon Redi. At this time, Ross the Boss is the first and only salon in Knoxville, and the largest salon in the country, to carry Davroe’s awesome products that are sulphate free, paraben free, cruelty free, 100% vegan, plant based, gluten free, and more. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with both Salon Redi and Davroe’s International Sales Manager, Andrew. Here’s what some of our staff have to say:

“I love Davroe’s Body Volume Texture mousse. It is great for fine hair, as it is very airy and doesn’t weigh down the hair but builds volume and hold!” - Salyna, Stylist

“I’ve tried everything on my girls’ tight curly hair, and nothing has worked like Davroe’s Tame Detangler. It has drastically shortened the amount of time I spend combing out their hair. It used to take me almost an hour, and now I can comb it out 10 minutes.” - Kim, CFO

“As someone who didn’t realize she had curly texture hidden in her hair, Davroe’s Curl Crème Definer has been an absolute game changer. It holds and keeps the curls so nice and moisturized. My fave go-to curly girl product!” - Maddie D., Stylist

“I have been searching for a clean hair care line for years with no luck. When I was introduced to Davroe, I was hooked immediately. My favorite products so far are the Volume Senses Shampoo (lathers so well and smells amazing), Formation Gel (for all hair types!), and the Voluminous Spray.” - Jess, Executive Assistant

“I love Davroe’s Ends Repair Leave-in Treatment. It is a fantastic option for people on the go who don’t have time to do weekly conditioning. Just add the product to freshly shampooed or dry hair and go. It does a phenomenal job preventing split ends and taming flyaways!” - Regina, Stylist

Stop by any of our locations or make an appointment with one of our stylists to find out more about these great products!

For Back-in-School Prep, Don’t Forget Your Garage

OUR BACK-IN-SCHOOL preparations may include setting the clock to get the kids used to rising earlier, dusting off backpacks, shopping for school supplies, and replacing outgrown clothes. But do you have any back-in-school traditions that involve organization?

With storage solutions, you can transform your garage from a simple arrival and departure spot to a customized hub for your on-the-go family. Here’s how to start:

Anticipate the Change in Season

Get your garage back in order after heavy use during the summer. Evaluate whether items need to be kept, donated, or disposed of. Clean, repair, and re-organize what remains into zones based upon frequency of use. Now is a great time to consider custom storage to make the process quick and easy.

Keep Things Clean with a Mud Room

Your garage is the perfect place for a mud room, providing a designated space for the family to drop off backpacks, jackets, and sports equipment before entering the house. Add hooks, cabinets, and cubbies to store inclement weather items and pet supplies, and don’t forget a handy bench seat with storage underneath.

Suit Up for Fall Sports

Organize the household’s fall sports equipment with versatile slatwall. Bins, racks, and accessories will keep soccer balls, golf bags, mountain bikes, and more off the floor and close at hand. And for game days, your garage can become the ultimate tailgating spot with custom countertops for food and drinks, an attractive and spill-proof epoxy polyaspartic floor, and overhead storage to keep seasonal items out of the way of cheering fans.

To make school mornings easier this fall, maximize your garage space with made-to-measure storage. Visit the 2,000-square-foot Designer Garages showroom in West Knoxville to talk with our designers and schedule a free, no-obligation home visit. Locally owned and operated, you can feel good about doing business with people with roots right here in our community. Call Designer Garages today, and let your garage become your family’s partner in a successful school year!

IT’S POTATO SALAD season! Whether you’re going to a picnic at the park, joining a backyard barbecue, or having a simple family dinner, potato salad is always a hit. Here are tips to make the best potato salad of your life.

Start with the right type of potato. While any potato can be used for potato salad, russets and yellows are the best options because they can absorb the dressing and flavors the most. Fingerlings and petites can also be good choices, and as a bonus, you don’t have to cut them.

Cut and soak potatoes before cooking. Cut potatoes into 1.5-2-inch chunks, as consistently as possible. If your chunks are too small, you’ll end up with mashed potatoes. Keep the peel on for extra flavor and nutrients. Soaking your potatoes in cold water before cooking will help prevent oxidation and remove excess starch. Don’t soak them for long - just a minute or two will do the job.

Simmer - don’t boil! Boiling your potatoes will cause them to break apart. Simmer them until they’re fork-tender. However, when in doubt, overcooked is preferable to undercooked. Season the water for added flavor. Add flavor to the potatoes as they cook. A few recommendations:

• Generously salt your water.

• Use vegetable stock.

• Add lemon juice, garlic, and other seasonings to the water.

Drain well, but don’t cool completely. When the potatoes are fork-tender, drain them well and let the steam escape. Get rid of as much excess moisture as you can. But don’t cool completely! While the potatoes are still warm, put them on a baking sheet, and sprinkle on some acid like apple cider, rice wine, or red wine vinegars. Pickle juice is another great acid choice! Adding the acid when the potatoes are warm maximizes the flavor. Avoid white vinegar, which is too strong, or balsamic vinegar, which will add a weird color. Afterward, sprinkle salt over the potatoes, unless you used pickle juice, which is already salty. Make the dressing separately. No matter what dressing base you choose (e.g., mayo, oil, etc.), don’t combine all the dressing ingredients with the potatoes. Make the dressing in advance and then mix with your potatoes once seasoned. If you’re using a dairy-based dressing, let the potatoes cool before mixing.

A classic potato salad dressing has mayonnaise, mustard, and some type of acid (like vinegar or citrus juice) and relish. You want the dressing to have a more liquid consistency before adding it to the dish. The starch in the potatoes will thicken the dressing and make it creamier. Add seasonings like paprika, salt, pepper, parsley, and dill to amp up the flavor. Bonus tip: Make a little extra dressing to give new life to leftover potato salad the next day.

Give it some texture. For a classic, all-American potato salad, add hard-boiled eggs to get a great mix of textures. Celery is another option to give you some crunch.

Serve at room temperature. Avoid serving cold potato salad in general, but it’s particularly important to bring potato salad with oil-based dressing to room temperature, because oil can harden when chilled.

Play with variations on your salad. Try using different flavor profiles and ingredients to spice things up. A current fan favorite is a potato salad inspired by Mexican street corn with cotija cheese, charred corn, lime juice, and the perfect amount of heat.

In addition to being delicious, potato salad is a showcase for America’s favorite vegetable. You’ll be happy to know that a medium (5.3 oz), skin-on potato has more potassium than a banana, 3 grams of plant-based protein, and almost one-third of the vitamin C we need daily - so enjoy!

BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLE POTATO SALAD

COURTESY OF POTATOGOODNESS.COM

Serves 12

Ingredients:

• 2-1/4 pounds yellow potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes

• As needed cold water + 2 tablespoons salt

• 3 garlic cloves, smashed

• 1/4 cup champagne or rice vinegar

• 3/4 cup mayonnaise

• 1/4 cup yellow mustard

• 1/2 cup sour cream

• 1/3 cup Bread and Butter pickles, diced 1/4 inch

• 1/3 cup red onions, diced 1/4 inch, rinsed with cold water

• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

• 2 teaspoons celery seed

• 1/4 cup green onions, sliced

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

In a large heavy bottomed pot, add the potatoes, enough cold water to just cover the potatoes by an inch, the salt, and garlic. Turn the heat onto high. When the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the potatoes until they are a little more than fork tender but not falling apart (about 20-25 minutes).

Drain the potatoes and spread them out evenly on a baking sheet to help them cool more rapidly. Sprinkle the potatoes with the vinegar while they are still slightly warm. While the potatoes cool, make the dressing.

In a large bowl, combine the mayonnaise, yellow mustard, sour cream, diced pickles, onions, dill, celery seed, green onions, salt, and black pepper. Combine the ingredients until they are well mixed and set aside.

When the potatoes are fully cooled, add them to the bowl with the dressing and mix well to combine. The potato salad is ready to serve but is even better after 1 or 2 days in the fridge. Before serving, garnish with green onions and a couple slices of bread and butter pickles so your guests have an idea of what is in it.

Pro Tip: It’s important to get in there and mash up some of the spuds which will result in a creamy potato texture in the sauce.

• 8 sweet tomatoes or yellow grape tomatoes

• 1/3 cup fresh mozzarella pearls

A Simple Beach Vacation Becomes a Life Lesson

AFRIEND ONCE told me, “Until your kids can drive, it’s a family trip, not a vacation.” It’s sort of a Murphy’s Law for life with children. Well, recently Murphy showed up at my family beach vacation and taught me something that is going to make my life better.

After an eight-hour drive, we arrived after check-in to find the condominium uncleaned and without air conditioning. I wasn’t happy. However, before I slipped into my “Crisis Intervention Super Suit” and took control, I decided it might be better to let my wife and son handle it. They got things resolved, but the experience revealed some important ideas.

First, I became aware of my belief that it was my personal responsibility that the vacation be wonderful for everyone in the family. Therefore, every problem that arose required me to rescue my family and become “vacation hero dad.” Until the crisis arose, I hadn’t even realized I had that belief, and though it wasn’t easy to relinquish control, I decided that maybe my wife and son were perfectly capable of handling the problems. As it turned out, they were.

I’m not going to get into the psychological stuff that drove my need to be the family hero, but challenging my (erroneous) belief gave me the freedom to NOT take a role that would have added to my personal exhaustion.

Challenging my belief also brought the benefit of a changed point of view - my perspective. My belief fed a perspective that these minor delays were catastrophes with the power to elevate my heart rate and blood pressure and ruin my mood. Instead, I was able to be a calm, supportive husband and father and give my wife and son an opportunity to (once again) show their own competencies and be the family heroes.

Finally, my challenged belief and changed perspective shifted my understanding of situations - my perceptions. I no longer viewed the events as win-or-lose threats to the family vacation but, rather, unforeseen random challenges that didn’t deserve the power to determine my/our happiness.

Each day our beliefs inform our perspectives, and our perspectives influence our perceptions of the events of our lives. Without thinking about it, we perceive, interpret, and react to the events of our days based on a set of beliefs about how

our lives and the world work. My doctoral advisor once told me, “Jim, all human behavior is purposeful. Our challenge is to understand what is (what beliefs are) driving someone’s behavior.” That truth applies to our own behavior, too.

For example, if you believe that life is a win-or-lose game, then every daily event is an-opportunity-to-gain OR risk-of-losing what is or could be yours; every challenge and interpersonal encounter is a chance to become more-or-less in the world. BUT, if you believe life (or a benevolent higher power) provides for you and guides and shapes the events of your life so that you can become more or better, then your challenges and encounters represent opportunities for personal growth and impact on the world. The two belief systems result in wholly different behaviors in individuals and societies (such as selfishness or benevolence) by changing the perspectives, perceptions, and actions of the people who hold them.

What are the beliefs that drive your perspectives, perceptions, and behaviors? How you react to the events of your day, the news you hear, and the words and actions of the people in your life reveals your underlying beliefs. If you want to change your reactions to a situation, you must first understand the beliefs that feed your perspectives and perceptions, then work to change those beliefs.

A word to the wise: Most of us become very attached to our beliefs and the resulting perceptions, so it’s often easier/wiser to first work on yourself rather than trying to change someone else’s beliefs. That said, most people are quite unaware of the beliefs that fuel their perspectives, perceptions, and actions, so self-awareness is also key to changing yourself.

A simple start - ask yourself, “What or whom do I perceive as a threat to my happiness, my dreams, my safety or security?” (By the way, a belief that something or someone is a threat to you will cause you to live a defensive life, with the higher stress levels and negative physical and emotional health effects that stress causes.) Then ask yourself, “Are these beliefs based on truth, or have I just accepted them as true?” Another great question to ask is, “Do these beliefs help me have a better life, or do they make my life more difficult?”

In the end, I know I had a better vacation because I challenged and began to change a belief, of which I was unaware, that had been unwittingly driving my behaviors. Changing that belief allowed me to be a freer, more relaxed me. I know my family appreciated that. Now I just have figure out what to do with my Crisis Intervention Super Suit.

ERIC JOHNSON

EXTRAORDINARY GUITARIST: CHECK. MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST: CHECK. VOCALIST: CHECK. SONGWRITER: CHECK.

EXPERIENCE HENDRIX • NASHVILLE’S RYMAN AUDITORIUM • OCTOBER 15TH

AUSTIN, TEXAS’

Eric Johnson pretty much has it all as far as musical talent is concerned. It should come as no surprise being that he grew up in a family who loved music - his mom a pianist and his dad a whistling champion. Johnson’s musical weapon of choice from the time he was 11 was the guitar. His guitar influences were greats like Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, and Jimi Hendrix - the latter of which we’ll dig deeper into in a moment.

Johnson released his first of 12 studio albums (along with five live albums) at the magic age of 27. We interviewed him in Everything Knoxville’s October 2018 edition after his second album, Ah Via Musicom, blew the world away with the amazing song “Cliffs of Dover” that is still considered one of the best guitar instrumentals in rock. To hear him perform this song live is a musical feast of the gods.

Fans will be able to see him perform on October 15th in Nashville as part of a tour commemorating one of his biggest influences: Jimi Hendrix. The tour is the incredible Experience Hendrix tour featuring Eric Johnson and other big names in music.

Johnson chatted about the Experience Hendrix tour and shared some of his thoughts and insights about being part of a tour that salutes one of his guitar heroes.

“Well, I’ve always loved playing Jimi’s music, and I always have since I was a kid. I just... tried to play it. So, it’s kind of like it’s nothing different for me to go play his music. And every time I do, I learn something about his approach or what he did. And so, it’s always an honor and a privilege for me to do that.”

Have there been any surprises or revelations in learning Hendrix’s music?

“Well, it’s unique. And it’s not only great lead playing, but some of the tones and the rhythm guitar playing. I mean, he was a great rhythm guitarist, and that was important to

him. The main nucleus or body of the song being the rhythm and how he approached that and orchestrated the songs, you could tell that was a really... it was an integral part of what he did. And he didn’t just shred on guitar. He had this whole orchestrated thing going on. You can really look at how he approached it as music, and it just happened to be on guitar. But I think the bigger picture was he was a music writer, and he used the guitar for his medium.”

Does Eric Johnson have a favorite Jimi Hendrix song that he plays?

“Wow, you know, I love them all. ‘Axis: Bold As Love’ is great. ‘May This Be Love’ is a great one - so beautiful. ‘Spanish Castle Magic’ is fun.”

As if the tour doesn’t keep Johnson busy enough, he revealed that he was working on new music.

“Well, I’m working on several different projects at once, but the main one I want to put out next is kind of a blues-flavored

record. It’s how I learned to play guitar initially when I was a kid, studying all the blues greats.” Later adding, “And so I want to kind of return to that and try to give a little bit of credence to that. So, I’m writing songs that kind of are in that vein.”

MOTHERFOLK HAS been revered as "The Best Band Ever" by almost all of its current members. What started in 2014 as a writing project between two college friends has grown into a phenomenon that has captured the hearts and souls of dozens of people all over the world.

Serious songs from goofy people. That's what you can expect from diverse, Midwest indie-rockers Motherfolk, a fully realized band untethered to genres with an endlessly bright future.

Composed of Bobby Paves and Nathan Dickerson on vocals and guitar, bassist Clayton Allender, drummer Ethan Wescott, and Karlie Dickerson on keys, Motherfolk are not only bandmates but best friends. The band's close-knit relationship allows each member to be their most authentic self, leaving every ounce of their souls to be poured out in to each song and high-energy performance.

Despite their light-hearted, groovy-rock sound, Motherfolk is dedicated to creating a much deeper connection with their fans. They don't shy away from the taboo, taking on heavy topics with a light heart. The results provide great music you can dance to, whose impact is felt long after the song has ended.

The band's quirky friendship and social media posts originally drew fans in but their connection to the music kept those fans around. With three full length albums and a few singles under their belt, they continue to tour regularly and spend the time in between in the studio working on what's next. Since their formation, Motherfolk has been on a steady upward trajectory, amassing well over 5 million Spotify streams on their studio albums, playing Lollapalooza 2023 and selling out shows while on tour. INATIONAL PARKS Within a Day’s Drive of Knoxville

N 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created the National Park Service to help protect natural and historic lands and phenomenons for future generations. The U.S. national parks showcase our country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage for visitors from around the globe. There are now 63 national parks that hold endangered plants and animals, archaeological sites, and miles upon miles of trails.

Our beloved Great Smoky Mountains National Park became official in 1926. The New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia became the most recently christened national park in late 2020. These and quite a few other parks are within a day’s drive of Knoxville. The National Park Service has an excellent

website at NPS.gov full of everything you ever wanted or needed to know about visiting one of the park locations.

1. Mammoth Cave

Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

- A little more than 3 hours from Knoxville

Our closest state park - aside from the Great

Smoky Mountains NP “right down the road” - is Mammoth Cave National Park. In addition to the amazing cave tours, there are night sky viewing programs, hiking trails (many at less than half mile!), and at least 4 accessible historic cemeteries.

2. New River Gorge

West Virginia near Glen Jean - A little more than 4 hours from Knoxville

7 5 8 1 6 4 2 3 1 2 3 4

An easy boardwalk trail leads to the New River Gorge Bridge vista with many more hiking trails available. Lovely scenic drives, along with outdoor activities, assures that there is something to please everyone! Because this fairly new park covers more than 50 miles of the river with 3 separate visitor centers, the NPS recommends using the coordinates on their website for directions as opposed to following standard GPS.

3. Congaree

Hopkins, South Carolina - 4.5ish hours from Knoxville

With astonishing biodiversity and the largest expanse of old growth bottomland forest remaining in the southeastern United States, this

swampy ecosystem can be seen by a fairly flat boardwalk loop trail. Or get up close and personal in a canoe or kayak! Twenty-five miles of trails will delight birdwatchers and fisherfolk.

4. Shenandoah

Luray, Virginia - A little under 6 hours from Knoxville

The beautiful Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue

freedom in the Old Courthouse located on the grounds. While it is not your typical park, the arch’s (“Willie Wonka”ish) interior tram ride to the top are worth the trip. Virtual tours are available online for those less brave!

6. Cuyahoga Valley

Ridge Mountains inside the park. From Big Meadows to Old Rag Mountain, hiking trails and picnic areas abound. The park’s Ranger programs and historic exhibits are available both in person and virtually for those who can’t make the trip.

5. The Gateway Arch

St. Louis, Missouri - A little under 7 hours from Knoxville

Believe it or not, the arch became a national park in 2018 - the smallest of parks with less than 200 acres. The park is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the west, the pioneers who shaped our history, and Dred Scott, who sued for his

Northern Ohio between Cleveland and Akron - 7.5 hours from Knoxville

The smooth Towpath Trail, the landmark route first traveled by mules and Ohio & Erie Canal workers, has connections to many of the parks natural and historic sites - great for strolling or biking. In addition to birding, fishing, and paddling, try a scenic train ride or a Canalway Quest to collect unique stamps.

(temperature, taste, color, odorless) in the U.S. The ancient thermal springs, mountain views, incredible geology, forested hikes, and abundant creeks - all in the middle of townmake Hot Springs National Park a unique and beautiful destination.

7. Indiana Dunes

Indiana’s Lake Michigan coast just southeast of Chicago - A little less than 8 hours from Knoxville

This is another fairly recent newcomer as a national park. Added in early 2019, it sports more than 50 miles of trails that lead through shifting sand dunes, quiet woodlands, sunny prairies, and lush wetland - all in one park! The lure of cooler temperatures and self-guided excursions are awfully tempting! Swim, paddle, or just enjoy the beachy sunsets.

8. Hot Springs

Hot Springs, Arkansas - About 8.5 hours from Knoxville

This is the only national park that protects a unique combination of lithology, geologic structure, and water sources that produce the only nonvolcanic geothermal springs of such high quality

There are so many more designated historic sites, scenic trails, rivers & recreational areas, battlefields, and monuments in most U.S. states, so be sure to check the National Parks website before you travel. Their website also has helpful facts that include parking pass info, current weather conditions, recreation options, and park history - all conveniently accessed by state location or park name. There is even an app for that! 5 6 8 7

The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection

KNOXVILLE IS VERY fortunate to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (not to be confused with the Frank H. McClung Museum, a wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee). The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library and housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street.

The McClung is home to a large collection of regional history and historic documents and is a top-notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to web-based genealogical databases, and that’s just the beginning.

The McClung makes it easy for anyone to visit. It is open every day, but the times will differ depending on the day of the week. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung.

If you are starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, plan a visit and take one of the free introduction to internet genealogy classes. Find out who lived in your house in 1925 or check out where your grandmother lived in the 1940 U.S. Census. Make a day of it, and while you’re downtown, have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General Store, or see a show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. So many changes have been taking place in downtown Knoxville, and your research on local history at the McClung will most likely make you want to explore more of this historic area.

For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comfort of your own home with its online digital collection. Spend hours hunting down historic images from Knoxville and East Tennessee. You can even purchase photos in a number of different ways.

Our favorite collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection taken by Knoxville’s own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. This collection has an estimated 75,000 negatives, providing a visual legacy of Knoxville and East Tennessee from 1907 until 1960. Preservation printing of these negatives has been the major focus of the McClung Historical Collection for two decades. Jim Thompson (1881-1976) and his younger brother, Robin Thompson (1895-1977), were business

partners from 1920 to 1926 as Thompson Brothers. Both men were pioneer commercial photographers. By the late 1920s, Jim’s (Jim Thompson Co.) and Robin’s (Robin Thompson, Inc.) photographs were appearing in local and national commercial publications. The next rainy day that has you looking for something to do, visit cmdc.knoxlib.org/ digital/collection and start exploring.

The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is located on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. TALL VERBENA ATTRACTS BUTTERFLIES

AND OTHER POLLINATORS

POLLINATOR PLANTS

are a hot commodity, and who doesn’t want to attract beautiful butterflies to their garden? While there are many important native species to incorporate, consider mixing in other plants as well. One of my longtime favorites is Verbena bonariensis , and it is a butterfly magnet. Goldfinches also have been spotted feasting on them.

Verbena bonariensis , commonly referred to as tall verbena, Brazilian verbena, or vervain, has pale purple blooms throughout summer up until frost. It stands tall and proud in the landscape, at about four to five feet, but does not overshadow its companions. The strong stems and airy nature make it perfect to sprinkle in amongst other plants, especially during the dog days of summer.

Tall verbena is native to South America. It is a tender perennial hardy from zones 7 to 11 but can self-seed, making it work in cooler regions. However, this has raised concerns about naturalization in some southern states and California where seedlings grow more freely.

Plants are easily grown in full sun with average to moist welldrained soil. They tolerate hot, dry conditions and have few insect or disease problems other than powdery mildew. If powdery mildew becomes a problem, they can be cut back. This may also be done if stems are broken to encourage more blooms or to help control re-seeding. However, it is best to leave stems intact if growing in colder regions.

Flowers of tall verbena are quarter inch tubes set in two- to threeinch rounded clusters. They are perfect for attracting pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. Plant them in mixed borders, meadows, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens. Be sure to check out these dwarf cultivars perfect for container

growing and compact space:

• ‘Lollipop’ - grows one to two feet

• ‘Meteor Shower’ - award winner, grows 20 to 30 inches, plants set little seed

• ‘Vanity’ - All-American Selection winner, grows to 24-30 inches Verbena bonariensis can be found at all three UT Gardens locations. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson, Tennessee. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the UT Gardens are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit utia.tennessee.edu/state-botanical-garden.

September in the Garden

HALLELUJAH,

FALL is in the air!

How are things going in your yard?

This is a great time to reevaluate and make plans for next year because you know what did well and what didn’t. What would you like to be different about next year’s garden? Keep in mind that our weather didn’t do us many favors, so maybe you shouldn’t tear it all up and start again!

September is a busy time in the garden because it is when we start preparing it for fall and winter. Here are things that you need to do this month:

n Do your walk around and check into all the areas that you have ignored while it was hot.

1. Look up to see how trees are faring. Are canopies sparse with dropping leaves? Are there broken, damaged, or diseased branches? Do you have oozing spots, sawdust, or a lot of woodpecker holes? How about shelf mushrooms? Did the cicadas cause the tips of branches to die?

2. Look down to ground level. Do you have mole tunnels or small tunnel entrances that indicate mole and/or vole problems? Are skunks, possums, and other critters digging up your lawn to get to grubs?

3. Look into shrubs and smaller plants to check for signs of disease and insects. How are annuals and perennials doing? What is going on in your vegetable garden? If you find problems during your check, stop by and let us help. There are usu ally treatments to aid your plants. If there aren’t, we will tell you that as well. Please don’t do major pruning right now either! You can cut out diseased or dead branches, but wait on shaping until the plants have gone dormant.

n If you planted veggies this year, make notes of what varieties you tried and where they were planted so that you can “crop rotate” next year. have to do that in raised beds. build up in the soil if you do not.) If your vegetable beds have stopped producing, clean them out and plant fall veggies. You can also add compost, manure, or leaf mold to improve your soil for next year.

n Did you have problems with disease and insects this year?

son also means we have a long breeding season for insects and fungus. Please be sure to get up all the fallen leaves and plant debris from problem plants so that insects and fungal spores can’t overwinter. Evergreens can still be treated if necessary, but it is a waste of money to treat decidu ous trees and shrubs that will not regrow leaves now anyway.

n If your annuals look terrible, remove and compost them.

in particular should be pulled before a frost because they will turn to mush if they freeze. Swap them for cool season annuals or perennials.

n If you are not going to refill your containers, dump out old soil and store them in a dry area. This is particularly important for terra cotta or low fired ceramics that will not withstand freezing temperatures.

n If you need to divide and/or transplant perennials, September is a good month to do spring blooming or fleshy rooted perennials such as peonies, iris, hosta, and lilies.

n Don’t be embarrassed by plant failure, especially if you are new to the area or are not an experienced gardener. It happens to everyone. Your yard/garden is a living thing, and all living things change. Some things thrive and some don’t, so just roll with it and look at “failures” as an opportunity to try something different! Before I finish, I would like to offer a few tips on mums. There are some common misconceptions that you should be aware of.

1. There are some lovely perennial mums (which now have the botanical name of Dendranthema), but they aren’t the colorful balls that you see everywhere this time of year. Those are hybrids, and they may or may not come back. They may also come back a different color or as dozens of little

2. Mums have a 4-6 week bloom time that is made shorter by heat and longer by cool weather. If your neighbor has a mum that lasts the entire fall, it isn’t real!

3. There are early, mid, and late season bloomers. It is possible to keep a display pretty all season by simply composting spent mums and buying one that blooms later.

n Don’t forget about pansies! They are cool weather plants and like to go in the ground mid to late September. Don’t plant too early or they will stretch. Don’t plant too late or they won’t have time to get established. They are also heavy feeders, so use fertilizer frequently. If you have questions, give us a call.

We also have some really adorable fall and Halloween decorations that have arrived, and it won’t be long before we start putting out... I can’t even say it yet!

I encourage you to stop by and see all the wonderful things we have for fall. Beautiful gardens begin at Meadow View!

New Exhibitions Opening

Emporium Center September 6

THE ARTS & Culture Alliance is pleased to present six new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from September 6-28. Most of the works on exhibition will be for sale and may be purchased by visiting in person or the online shop at KnoxAlliance.store.

Nick Ferruso: Old Growth, New Roots in the Lower Gallery

Nick Ferruso uses his canvas to capture an intimate moment in nature. His paintings are unique slices of time: rejuvenating, uplifting, and personal. Most feature familiar nature scenes from in and around Knoxville. From afar, their realism fools the eye, so much so they could be mistaken for photographs. But up close, the paintings become effectively abstract with colored splotches and overlapping palette knife work that is messy and even a bit chaotic.

Nick was born and raised in West Virginia, where the natural landscape lives up to the state motto of “Wild and Wonderful.” Although his first love was fine art, he pursued a BFA in Advertising and Graphic Design at Columbus College of Art and Design then spent the next 20 years as a graphic designer, finally settling in Knoxville to work for the former Scripps Networks.

Dryad Naiad Studio: Of Earth and Air in the Lower Gallery

Of Earth and Air features original mushroom spore prints which begin as photographs and subsequently enlarged to produce limited edition, pigment ink prints on archival paper. Tiny organisms living in the mushrooms are collaborators whose tracks and other marks are gladly included. None of the images are AI- or computer-generated. These works are highly experimental and based on encounters with found and foraged materials in the natural world and from the detritus of human life.

Husband and wife George Pfeffer and Linda Goodwin own Dryad Naiad Studio, named for the spirits of the woods and water that inspire them. They live, work, garden, and play with nearly anything on the banks of the South Toe River at the base of the Black Mountains near Burnsville, NC.

Charles McTyere Parker III: Attention Deficit: Collected Works 2021-2024 in the Upper Gallery

Attention Deficit highlights the artist’s working process where projects move in multiple directions as focus abruptly shifts and works remain ever in flux. Themes of isolation, anxiety, memory, death, decay, and self-assessment merge with surreal and abstracted formal concepts like windows, doors, and landscapes, providing an introspective

dreamlike experience for the viewer. Working with several medium, including paint, film photography, collage, found objects, and repurposed materials, his work serves as a means of conveyance and documentation of his place in the world.

Ігор Цикура and Інна Любич: Where I Am in the Atrium

Where I Am is a series of etchings and linocuts created in Kyiv, Ukraine immediately after the initial shock of Russia’s full-scale invasion had passed, allowing for the first meaningful reflections to emerge. Home as a phenomenon, as a concrete object, is blurred in the twilight of the uncertain modern world.

The entire series was created for charity, with all proceeds from the sale of the artworks going toward providing medical equipment for the Ukrainian service members, facilitated through the Ukrainian charitable organization, UA First Aid, and presented by koloHUB, a Knoxville-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping and improving the lives of war-impacted people and animals in Ukraine.

Anna Szynkiewicz: Geoscience Through the Lens of Ceramic Art in the Display Case

This exhibition presents artistic visualizations of geological settings investigated by the Curiosity, Spirit, and Opportunity rovers on Mars, as well as emphasizes the significance of clay use through time for water transport and purification. The ceramic mosaics feature a variety of exciting career opportunities offered by Geoscience, including environmental, geology, water, and planetary fields. Szynkiewicz teaches geology and environmental science courses at UT and conducts geochemical research.

David Gorley: Vanitas on the North Wall Artist statement excerpts: Based on 17th century Dutch and Flemish still life paintings, I studied the sub-genre of vanitas and memento mori paintings.

Vanitas is a still life of symbolic objects to remind the viewer of their mortality and of the worthlessness of worldly goods and pleasures. A memento mori also reminds of mortality and the shortness and fragility of human life. Every aspect of the picture has symbolism, some evident and common, some obscure. The permanence of our ideas and identities, whether in art or in life, are a vanity of mind.

The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. For more information, call 865-523-7543 or visit KnoxAlliance.com.

SHARING THE SMALL BUSINESS STORIES OF KNOXVILLE

Three Generations of Matlocks - Joe, Jane and Jimmy

TRACES by Jo Sandman Through

November 10th

A“Our Everything Knoxville feature story has had the most positive impact on our business than any marketing we have ever done.”

We began advertising our seasonal tire sales in Everything Knoxville in 2022. The results from those and the cover feature celebrating our 70th anniversary have far exceeded our expectations and continue to generate kind comments and new business.

We haven’t found a better value than advertising in Everything Knoxville and would recommend them to any business looking for effective print advertising.

FTER A life-changing summer at Black Mountain College, Boston-based artist Jo Sandman decided to devote her life to art. During that pivotal summer of 1951, she studied painting with Robert Motherwell and Ben Shahn, drawing with Joseph Fiori, photography with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind; anthropology and French. It was this “galvanizing experience” at BMC that prompted Jo Sandman to decide to follow the path of an artist. She went on to develop and maintain a studio practice exploring painting, drawing, experimental sculpture, installation, and photography for more than 70 years. TRACES represents a survey of her career that attests to the artist’s restless curiosity expressed through her experimentation with a wide variety of imagery, materials, and processes.

About the Artist

Jo Sandman was not only a witness to the historically important experimentation that shaped mid to late 20th century art, but also an active participant. Trained as a painter, she went on to create innovative drawings, photography, experimental sculpture, and installation works, which were exhibited widely and are now in numerous permanent museum collections. Significant awards include fellowships from the Massachusetts Arts Council and the Bunting Institute at Harvard, as well as grants from the NEA and the Rockefeller Foundation. During

the course of a long career, she exhibited widely and was recently featured in retrospectives at the Black Mountain College Museum and the Provincetown Art Museum; a two person exhibition Helen Frankenthaler and Jo Sandman/Without Limits at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art; and numerous group exhibitions, including Women in Abstraction at the Addison Gallery of American Art.

The museum is also offering the following programs in conjunction with this exhibition:

From Postage Meters to Publishing

Business Note

IHAVE HAD the adventure of working in very different businesses in my career, with exposure to all kinds of situations, people, technology, and have gained an appreciation (and some great stories) of the quirks and cultures that come with a given industry or specific business. The short list includes a restaurant, a medical office, construction, retail, real estate, sales and management, residential renovations, and during Covid, a jump to publishing (of all things!).

My primary role from my mid 20s-40s was a 15-year career in the same industry. Due to an ownership change in the business that I helped start and was managing, I found myself facing a hard decision of “what’s next.” I loved what I had been doing - a mix of technology, problem solving, customer interaction, and managing dayto-day operations were aspects I truly enjoyed.

As I had been in a very specific “niche,” to remain in Knoxville would require a change to a new industry. Both an exciting and unsettling time. Looking back, my years of being in one business unfairly (but understandably) shaped my perspective on what I should explore or feel qualified to pursue.

The transition was bumpy - and further complicated by the 2007 recession.

I pursued an entirely different industry and was enthusiastic to get started. At first, it was a “fish out of water” experience - but within a short time, I came to realize that sales, client relationships, and the basics of business operations and accounting were all transferable skills that had a place in contributing to this new role. It was both a relief and an encouragement!

What I have learned - primarily after age 40 in my case - is that we possess a much broader skill set and base of knowledge than we may recognize. Our experiences, ability to think and reason, a cooperative attitude, and work backgrounds all have common threads. The colors may be different, but it’s still thread.

It is very natural to be hesitant or fearful in making big decisions or changes when we can’t see around the next corner, and I have been there more than once!

My reason for sharing this is to encourage those who may be on the fence, or fearful of change, and feeling unprepared to recognize that you are better equipped than you are likely giving yourself credit for and are more capable than you think.

The popular book What Color is Your Parachute? has exercises to help recognize values and transferable skills, and local pros like Dr. Jim Bailey are an invaluable resource. You got this!
