things to mind such as cooler temperatures, colorful foliage, and fall festivals. The Smoky Mountains are especially striking during this season, which is why visitors travel to our area to enjoy our special corner of Tennessee. But September also brings to mind the Labor Day weekend signaling symbolically the end of summer. Knoxville celebrates Labor Day with a bang by hosting its signature Boomsday event that attracts thousands of visitors to the riverfront for music, food, fun, and the largest fireworks display in the nation. This year promises to be bigger and better, so don’t miss the last year for this signature event. Labor Day also is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they

make to the strength and prosperity of our country. In this edition, we are pleased to feature a variety of small business owners that are essential for our economy. We applaud their efforts and celebrate their hard work to help make Knoxville and our area great. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention another September day in our history – September 11th. We at Everything Knoxville will always remember those that were lost on that fateful day and those that suffered losses. Let’s not forget this now historic day that changed everything. So enjoy September and the coming of the fall season. And yes, September in East Tennessee means football games and tailgate parties. Let’s cheer our Vols on to a victory!

Park Place

A Traditional Neighborhood Development in the Heart of Farragut ARM,

welcoming porches and flowering courtyards reminiscent of Charleston-style, family friendly communities where neighbors, friends, and families gathered to chat on summer days and autumn evenings are just two of the many amenities that you will discover at the charming neighborhood of Park Place at Farragut. You no longer need to visit Charleston to experience the intricate detailed craftsmanship of wrought iron, custom railings, and tongue and groove ceilings of these exquisite porches and gated, southern garden courtyards. Crepe myrtles, dogwoods, and magnolias beautifully frame your family’s new home, which features an inviting entrance to your very own, private courtyard. Ah, the courtyards! Shaded, meandering pathways lead to whimsical wonders behind every gate. Graceful arches, fountains, wrought iron gates, and patios are reminiscent of the old southern courtyards of Charleston. Your unique courtyard is your family’s very own out-of-door sanctuary designed to reflect each homeowner’s individual tastes. No two courtyards are the same.

“There are several unique amenities at Park Place that were especially appealing to my husband and me when we decided to build,” said Pam Zachary, Resident Realtor for Park Place. “The homes surround a beautiful park in the center of the community where friends and neighbors often gather. The neighborhood kids love to run and play ball in the afternoon. The lifestyle is easy, and there is plenty of time to relax due to the maintenance-free landscaping and no yardwork. The lawns and landscaped areas are professionally maintained by the Park Place HOA, allowing residents more free time.” “Relaxing is easy when there is no yardwork,” said neighbor Alex Skaalerud. “Not having to do any yardwork frees up more time to spend with my family and their activities.” Park Place, located in the heart of Farragut, is only minutes from world-class shopping, entertainment, and sports venues. Its unique Charleston-style architecture is designed and built exclusively by Gerald Cress of Cress Company Incorporated. Gerald has combined his degree in architecture and his more than 15 years of building expertise to make Park Place the unique community that it is. “A very talented designer and builder, Gerald is gifted with an amazing eye for detail,” said Pam. “His passion for this style

of architecture is reflected in every home he designs and builds. Each home captures the grace, charm, and sense of timelessness of old historic Charleston, with each home being uniquely different.” Park Place at Farragut is very excited to have their first home in the Home Builders Association of Greater Knoxville’s Parade of Homes in October, and several of its residents will open their courtyards for you to stroll through and experience at your leisure. To learn more about Park Place, and to discover an entirely new future for you and your family at this unique and charming Charlestown-style community, call 865-3851305 or visit www.parkplacelifestyles.net.

Learn the A, B, C, and D’s of Medicare at No Cost to You DURING MY CLIENT consultations, I’ve

discovered that understanding Medicare is an area where my clients express the most frustration and uncertainty. I’m pleased to announce that Marsh Professional Group has added a dedicated Medicare specialist to its team to help you transform that uncertainty into certainty. Here’s how we can help. » Before making your initial enrollment decisions as you’re nearing your 65th birthday, we’ll review the pros and cons of using a Part B Major Medical Plan and a Part D Prescription Plan versus a Part C Medicare Advantage. We’ll also make sure you don’t miss out on your once-in-your-lifetime window of opportunity to sign up for supplemental Medigap insurance, where insurance companies CANNOT deny your coverage for pre-existing conditions. » If you’re already on Medicare, we’ll analyze your existing Medigap policies to make sure you’re receiving the best coverage for the lowest premium and consider alternative policies that might better meet your needs. » During open enrollment each year (Oct. 15th to Dec. 7th), we can review your Part D prescription coverage to determine if better coverage is available for you. This is also the time you can switch between Medicare Advantage plans or change from traditional Medicare to an Advantage plan. Did you know that some Advantage plans cover vision and dental costs, while traditional Medicare doesn’t? But be aware, many Advantage plans have recently increased deductibles. » Because the cost of health insurance is more than just your monthly premiums, we can help you compare your total out-of-pocket costs, taking into consideration premiums, deductibles, co-insurance, and annual maximums. So help is here, and the best news of all is that we offer this as a free service to you. Why? The insurance companies pay us to do this work on your behalf, and since we’re independent financial planners, we’re under no obligation to any one insurance company. We’ll shop around and find what’s best for you. Call today to set up your complimentary, no-obligation meeting, and plan on joining us at our next monthly Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern, where we’ll be discussing Medicare in greater detail.

friends, and you’re thinking, “What are these procedures?” “Which one – surgical or nonsurgical – is the right one for me?” “Will they help me with the decision?” “Will they be honest with me?” “Will they really make me look younger and natural?” “Will it hurt?” “Will they do a good job or leave me looking worse?” “Do I really want to do this?” It’s natural to have these questions – it shows you’re thinking! Aesthetic and surgical procedures should not be entered into lightly. But here’s the good news: Dean Kleto, MD, and Cynthia St. Germain, BA, RN, BSN, have the answers to those questions. Not only because they have encountered them numerous times in their combined 40+ years of practice, but because they listen and they hear their patients’ concerns, and they care about making each outcome a positive, comfortable one. This genuine commitment and passion for what they do has obviously been a success if you measure the loyalty their patients have to them. Their patients have learned the practitioners have created a “we’re in this together” relationship that gives them peace of mind, and that builds loyalty – both ways. Introducing Hardin Valley’s The Goddard School

A

S THE DAUGHTER of immi-

grant parents who owned and operated a small business as I was growing up, I’ve experienced entrepreneurship on many different levels. But never did I imagine the response that we have received from parents since my husband, Don, and I launched The Goddard School here in Hardin Valley. While it is the goal of every business owner to satisfy their customers, it’s difficult to express the overwhelming and positive response we receive from our students’ parents. “Matthew has enjoyed every single day, has grown both emotionally and developmentally, and has developed many great friends that we hope to see in kindergarten,” said Matthew’s mom, Nicole. “Thank you for the great work you do and the tremendous amount of patience and love you have for our children. Our family will treasure the memories as our youngest journeys to kindergarten well prepared.” I truly believe that one of the greatest rewards that I and our team of trained professionals receives is the knowledge that, in our warm and nurturing environment, we help your youngest family members begin their social and academic journeys that can make 14

all the difference in a child’s life. Not a daycare, our team of dedicated educators include certified undergraduate and graduate instructors who help provide your infant through school age children with well defined pre-school educational opportunities that will help them make the most out of their future social and academic experiences. Fully accredited, The Goddard School offers students an awardwinning curriculum designed to guide your infant’s early learning experiences, resulting in a lifelong love of learning that allows each baby to develop at his or her own pace. Our toddler program encourages your child’s natural curiosity in a fun and active learning environment, while our preschool program introduces preschoolers to cognitive skills, social skills, language skills, and art skills. Our pre-K program focuses on kindergarten preparedness, encouraging cooperative play and collaborative problem solving skills, all customized to your child’s progress, needs, and age. Parents also appreciate receiving daily reports for each of their children describing the day’s curriculum, student progress, and memorable moments, all designed to help inform them of their student’s individual progression.

Due to the success of early childhood development programs, the overwhelming response of our parents, and our growing “wait list,” we are pleased to announce that The Goddard School in Hardin Valley will be adding 3,100 square feet of classroom, gym, and multi-purpose facilities to its existing campus beginning this fall, which will allow us to accept additional students in the months ahead. There are very few things that we can offer our children that are more valuable than a great education, which we believe begins early on in your child’s life. While we don’t know where life’s journey will ultimately take our students, we’re confident that we can assist you in assuring that his or her journey will be joyful and productive. If you would like to discover just how The Goddard School can help prepare your child for a lifetime of social and academic success, I invite you to call or visit me. Let’s begin together!

How Do You Know When You Have Enough to Retire? There is no simple answer, but consider some factors. YOU SAVE for retire-

Ali Swofford, PhD

ment with the expectation that at some point, you will have enough savings to walk confidently away from the office and into the next phase of life. So how do you know if you have reached that point? Retirement calculators are useful, but only to a point. The dilemma is that they can’t predict your retirement lifestyle. You may retire on 65% of your end salary only to find that you really need 90% of your end salary to do the things you would like to do. Of course there are many other variables to consider, such as inflation, withdrawal, and return rates to name a few. The same can be said for “retirement studies.” Aon Hewitt now projects the average “full-career” employee needs to have 15.9 times their salary saved at age 65, in addition to Social Security income, to sustain their standard of living into retirement.1 Fidelity estimates show the average 401(k) balance amassed by a worker 55 or older is $150,300; the Employee Benefit Research Institute just released a report showing the average IRA owner has an IRA balance of $87,668.2 Retiring later might make a substantial difference. If you retire at 70 rather than at 65, you are giving presumably significant retirement savings that may have compounded for decades five additional years of compounding and growth. That could be huge. Can anyone save too much for retirement? The short answer is “no,” but occasionally you notice some “good savers” or “millionaires next door” who keep working even though they have accumulated enough of a nest egg to retire. So how close are you to retiring? For a free “When Will Your Nest Egg Run Out” analysis, contact Swofford Financial, and the answer to that question may start to emerge.

Retire... Your Way When you look at your 401(k), IRA, Social Security projections and outside investment statements, are you concerned you will run out of money? If you’ve done everything you know how to do yet still stress out or aren’t “sure” when or how to retire, then you need to RSVP today for our FREE Retirement Seminar and receive a Retire Your Way Assesstment just for attending.

The Gentle Barn–Tennessee

W

HO COULD have imag-

ined that a birthday wish from Ellie Laks to her husband, Jay Weiner, asking him to help her “rescue a cow” named Dudley in Tennessee would lead to the founding of The Gentle Barn here in Knoxville? It all began when an area woman phoned The Gentle Barn in California asking for their assistance in rescuing Dudley, who was taken away from his mother after one month and sent to a beef ranch to be fattened up for slaughter later. As a result of an unfortunate accident, Dudley lost one of his feet and was left to walk on his remaining three legs for eight months. Dudley not only experienced a loss of mobility, but the loss of one of his feet was putting an immense strain on his entire body, and in time, he might lose his ability to walk altogether. This is when Ellie and Jay, The Gentle Barn in California co-founders, began their search to locate a veterinarian with experience amputating a cow’s foot and fitting the cow with a prosthesis. Their search led them to Dr. Anderson, one of the leading bovine surgeons in the nation, who was located at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Their search also found Ronnie Graves in Florida, who could create a prosthetic foot for Dudley. With everything in place, Ellie and Jay flew to Nashville, Tennessee, to save Dudley. After five months in the hospital and several surgeries, Dudley was fitted with a prosthesis followed by months of physical therapy. 18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2015

Dudley was ready to go home, but just where would home be? We considered bringing him to The Gentle Barn in California, but the ongoing drought and sandy soil conditions, which could interfere with his prosthesis, were major obstacles. It was decided to keep Dudley on grass and near the University of Tennessee, where he could receive the necessary care he required. Because it was the dream of Jay and Ellie to launch The Gentle Barn nationally with locations in every state, the opportunity presented itself to initiate their dream with The Gentle Barn–Tennessee. Dudley’s journey, which led to the founding of The Gentle Barn–Tennessee in Knoxville, could not have had a happier ending, except Dudley’s story is really just the beginning. Jay and Ellie have since rescued Destiny, and it was love at first sight for Dudley and Destiny, where he spends his days grooming her and laying by her side under their giant hickory tree. Other residents include Worthy, Indie, and Chris, three horses from Kentucky rescued by The Gentle Barn two years earlier, who were being boarded temporarily in Lexington. They also rescued “Rick Springfield,” the rooster from Nashville, and his two girlfriends, Jesse’s Girl and Rosy. Lastly, Ellie and Jay brought home two pigs, Horton and Henry, who were heading to slaughter. Afraid of people at first, they are now very playful, happy, friendly, and love to roll over for tummy rubs. Also, there will be many more animals who will join these amazing animals at The Gentle

Barn in the future. The Gentle Barn–Tennessee is open Saturdays from 11-1 for visitors to hug and brush the cows, feed the horses carrots, give the pigs tummy rubs, and hold the chickens and as they fall asleep in their laps. Visitors are also invited to sample delicious Tofurky hot dogs and Beanfield chips to discover just how a delicious, healthy, crueltyfree, plant-based diet can be. During the week, The Gentle Barn–Tennesse hosts inner city, at-risk, and special needs groups of children who share the animals' stories of abuse and neglect. The Gentle Barn–Tennessee also works with war veterans, domestic violence shelters, senior citizen centers, children’s hospitals, and anyone else who would benefit from the unconditional love, hope, and inspiration of our residents. Legacy Parks Foundation Celebrates 10 Years of Preservation and Recreation

T

HOSE OF US who love this area

have learned that we need to be true to who we are. Knoxville has the gift of geography and exceptional natural assets, and we are finally embracing them. We are a river city; we are a community of ridges and valleys. These are what make Knoxville special – and these are also the focus of our work at Legacy Parks Foundation. As we celebrate 10 years of preserving greenspace, expanding parks, creating trails, and improving access to our rivers, we can look back and see the success of many people and organizations who saw the potential and collaborated to enhance what makes us unique. We have created recreational opportunities where there were none, preserved 1,000 acres of forest and hundreds of acres of parkland, and have increased the awareness of outdoor recreation as an economic driver in our region. Some of our first projects set the stage for even larger projects and greater land preservation. The river bluff property atop the ridge on the south side of the Tennessee River from downtown is ready to become a city park instead of a condominium complex. Legacy Parks led the fundraising effort to preserve

the land – once the site of the Battle of Armstrong’s Hill during the Civil War. The park will become part of the proposed “Battlefield Loop” of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness that includes Fort Dickerson, High Ground Park, Fort Higley, and Fort Stanley. The South Loop of the Urban Wilderness includes close to 50 miles of multi-use trails, five parks, and unparalleled natural features. This exceptional recreation area connects city, county, state, and private land to create a 1,000-acre playground for all types of physical activity, from nature walks and mountain

biking to paddling on a beautiful quarry lake. The recent award of $100,000 from Bell Helmets will help to create a world-class, expert level mountain bike trail on Legacy Parks’ land that will put Knoxville on the map as a mountain bike destination. Taking care of these natural assets is more than aesthetics, recreation, or conservation. It also makes good business sense. A recent study released by the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy at UT states that South Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness “is a valuable natural asset that generates local spending and tax revenues, supports jobs, helps Knoxville attract and retain a highly skilled workforce, and helps enhance residents’ quality of life.” Legacy Parks will continue to work to protect our natural assets and improve the opportunities for outdoor recreation and physical activity in all of East Tennessee. Won’t you join us in this effort? You may become a “Friend of Legacy Parks” on our website, www.legacyparks.org. Also, check out our www.outdoorknoxville.com site for places to play, outdoor resources, organizations, and a calendar of events.

Tour de Tellico Gets New Sponsor THE TELLICO Lake Rotary Club is

pleased to announce that Provision Proton Therapy Center of Knoxville will be this year’s naming sponsor of the 10th annual Tour de Tellico. On Saturday, September 26, the Provision Tour de Tellico will be hosted by the Tellico Lake Rotary Club. The event begins at the First Baptist Church of Tellico Lake with the long rides starting at 8 am. The Rotary Club provides water and snacks for the riders at several rest stops, as well as a light lunch at the end of the ride. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Provision Proton Therapy Center to make this year’s Tour de Tellico the best yet,” said John Everson, President of the Tellico Lake Rotary Club. “As we promote our new Tour de Tellico Activity Guide, our goals of ‘Living an Active and Healthy Lifestyle’ align with Provision Proton Therapy Center’s mission to work with hospitals and physicians in providing the best in care and recovery for patients to return to an active life.”

For this milestone year, bicyclist enthusiasts from near and far will come together to ride the beautiful back roads of East Tennessee. Peddling through the most scenic vistas of Loudon, Monroe, and McMinn counties, bikers will be exhilarated not only from the ride, but from the beauty of the views. Whether it’s for the challenge or just the bragging rights, cyclists are in for a day of fun and biking camaraderie. Provision’s Tour de Tellico offers four rides for all levels of cyclists – the 25k, 50k (covering about 31 miles), 100k (about 62 miles), and the challenging Century 100 mile event. “Two years ago we added the 25k event so casual bikers could participate,” said Jim Wiese, Tour de Tellico Chairman.

“This opens the event to many additional cyclists from Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, and surrounding lake communities who can comfortably participate in the charity ride. It’s important to realize this is not a race, just an enjoyable ride to challenge your personal best, have some fun, and raise money for worthy local charities.” “Last year we were able to make significant donations to the Loudon County Boys & Girls Club, Good Shepherd Center, Monroe County Imagination Library, Good Samaritan Center of Loudon County, Habitat for Humanity, and other Rotary charities,” said John Everson. “Our goal is to top last year’s proceeds so we can provide more assistance to local people in need.” The routes have been carefully checked for the bikers’ safety, personally traveled, and mapped out online. For more information or to register, visit www.TourdeTellico.com. The Tellico Lake Rotary Club provides service to the community, networks with other organizations, promotes high ethical standards, and advances goodwill and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders, all while members enjoy friendship, fellowship, and fun. The More Natural Approach SOMETIMES THE smallest, most

silent ingredients make a dish stand out with perfection. This couldn’t be truer than with thickeners. Thickening agents such as corn starch, arrowroot, and kuzu, among others, all are prized for their culinary contributions to provide a glaze that most chefs use to add their special touches. Each thickener has a different quality that makes choosing the right thickener an art form for cooking, as well as making a right choice to include healthy benefits, too. Kuzu, which comes from the kudzu plant, deserves top mention. The kudzu plant was introduced in 1876 as a gift from Japan, and in the 1930s, the kudzu plant was used as an attempt to stop erosion throughout the southeast. Its overgrowth can be seen practically everywhere in the southeast, and goats are now being used in an attempt to eradicate what some claim to be a nuisance. Fortunately, Kudzu Festivals around the southeast have brought attention to the amazing qualities this plant offers. Basket weaving, kudzu paper, and kudzu blossom jelly and syrup all make this a respectable plant. Kuzu, which comes from the root of the kudzu plant, ranks high with its healthy benefits, as well as its culinary attributes of thickening puddings and adding a glaze to many cuisines. Kuzu is being recognized by experts to be more than just a thickening agent. Research with laboratory animals at Harvard Medical School has revealed that a drug extracted from kudzu root may help in the treatment of alcoholism. According to Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director of the Institute for Traditional Medicine and Preventive Health Care in Portland, Oregon, kuzu contains a very high concentration of flavonoids, which are responsible for its strong medicinal effect on the digestive tract by inhibiting the contraction of smooth muscle tissue, thereby

increasing blood flow and relieving cramping in the intestines. According to Virginia Harper, author of Controlling Crohn’s Disease the Natural Way, kuzu tea was used as a means of helping her improve her condition of Crohn’s. She states in her book, “In the 30 years I have been guiding people toward healing of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, I have found that the kuzu starch is stellar in its ability to restore damaged intestinal and soft tissue.” Kuzu also has medicinal effects on the circulatory system by lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of blood clots, thus protecting against heart disease. Clinical studies done in China have shown that kuzu root preparations can reduce high blood pressure, relieve chronic migraines, and ease aches in the shoulders and neck. With all these attributes, kuzu should definitely rank high on its use. Kuzu has been traditionally prepared for hundreds of years in Japan. This preparation is a natural precipitation process without the use of chemicals or dyes, not to mention the fact that it has not been genetically altered. This cannot be said of other thickening agents. Kuzu is imported from Japan and can be found in most health food stores. Kuzu is one amazing product and should be hailed for its many contributions. Even the smallest ingredient in a recipe can turn out to be the greatest when it has so much to offer.

Recipes with Kuzu BY MICHELLE SAMPLES

Apple Cinnamon Kuzu Pudding » 4 apples (remove peels and core and slice into 1/2inch pieces) » 4 cups apple juice or cider » 2 tsp cinnamon » Pinch sea salt » 1/2 cup kuzu diluted with 1/4 cup cold water Place apples, apple juice, cinnamon, and sea salt in pan. Bring to a boil and simmer 15 min. Slowly add diluted kuzu while stirring (so as not to create lumps) until thickened to desired consistency. More may be added if needed. Set aside to cool.

Pecan Crust Add 2 cups pecans to Cuisinart and blend until smooth. Add 8 dates and blend together. In parfait glasses, alternate with the pecan crust and apple cinnamon kuzu pudding. Makes a wonderful fall dessert. Serve chilled.

Stir Fry Kuzu Glaze » 2 leeks (remove the tough end pieces and clean between each leaf carefully) » 4 cups bok choy, sliced into 1/2 slices » 4 cups broccoli flowerettes » 1/2 cup red bell pepper slices » 1/2 cup celery » 1/2 cup almonds » 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seed oil » 2 Tbsp mirin » 1/2 cup water » 2 tsp sea salt or 2 Tbsp shoyu » 2 Tbsp kuzu diluted with 2 Tbsp cold water To pan add oil and heat. Add leek slices, celery, and bell pepper. Sauté for 3 min. Add broccoli, bok choy, mirin, and water. Cover and simmer for 5 min. Add salt or shoyu and diluted kuzu. Toss together and serve over rice or noodles.

Kuzu Tea » 1 cup water » 1 Tbsp kuzu diluted in 1 Tbsp cold water » 1 tsp umeboshi paste To pan add water. Bring to boil. Slowly add diluted kuzu and stir constantly while adding. It will thicken slightly. Add umeboshi paste. Drink while warm but not hot.

Why Choose the Institute?

THE ANSWER to this important question can be found in three categories, namely:

EXPERTISE EXPERIENCE COMPASSION

r. Jeffrey Dell is currently in his 20th year of practice in Knoxville. He was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to become Subspecialty Board Certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) and founded the Institute 15 years ago to provide a center dedicated to the advancement of female pelvic floor medicine in East Tennessee. In addition to seeing patients from all across East Tennessee, Dr. Dell and the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine have been a national referral Center of Excellence for the management of complications following surgeries with mesh and slings and have evaluated and performed complex surgical procedures on numerous out-of-state patients from across the U.S. Dr. Dell has published numerous articles in peerreview journals and has lectured extensively nationally and internationally in academic forums. developments in female pelvic floor health is the MonaLisa Touch®. Dr. Dell and the Institute are one of only three training centers in the U.S. where all providers must be trained before beginning to perform the procedure. As such, Dr. Dell has performed hundreds of procedures and has a level of experience and expertise that is unparalleled currently in the U.S. “We have instruments and technology advancements, as well as experience on the treatment of vulvar and external tissues, that other centers currently do not have,” says Dr. Dell. The Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine is completing the U.S. patient trial for the treatment of lichen sclerosis, a painful inflammatory condition affecting many women, and has seen very encouraging results. These evolving treatment protocols are being developed in conjunction with the Italian physicians and engineers who pioneered the technology a few years ago in Florence and Milan. Virtually all questions, issues, or clinical scenarios in the U.S. are funneled through Dr. Dell and the other two training centers on a weekly basis, again providing an unparalleled knowledge of the technology at the teaching centers. Finally, patients who come to Dr. Dell and the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine for treatment appreciate first-hand not only

the passion he has for what he does, but the compassion he has for his patients and their families. That compassion is also shared by the team members of the Institute who are all considered valued members of the patient support staff. Our vision is to provide a “concierge” level center that is quiet, sophisticated, accommodating, and unlike any other center in the region. Joining Dr. Dell at the Institute are Dr. Lionel McCollum and Teresa DeBusk, Nurse Practitioner, each with more than 30 years experience, to provide all aspects of general gynecology and routine care of women as needed. were our first guests back in 2009 are now middle aged and elderly dogs. The puppy is already seven years old; half of his life he’s been romping, stomping, and enjoying visits at Ms. C’s. Many of these dogs are showing progressed signs of arthritis, and they may be at risk of osteoarthritis and cartilage deterioration. Just like humans with arthritic problems, eating a proper diet, weight management, and taking proper supplements benefit many dogs. Veterinarians frequently recommend a combination of both glucosamine and chondroitin. Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine recently conducted a test, finding that dogs on a diet high in Omega 3’s had an improved ability to rise from a resting position and played friskier after six weeks. Another study found that after three months, most dogs fed a rich Omega 3 diet had greater weight bearing in their most severely affected arthritic limbs. And some dogs in the study were able to undergo a reduction in the medication administered to them to reduce

arthritic pain. Beau, our 13-year-old American Staffordshire, was unable to jump into the backseat of our pickup truck two years ago. He has been taking the supplement NuVet NuJoint DS for about two years. NuJoint contains glucosamine and chondroitin, along with vitamin C. Today he runs out to the truck, jumps in, and is ready for his ride. NuJoint from NuVet can be used as a preventative measure to support optimal joint health and mobility. Always visit with your veterinarian regarding your dog’s health issues. When checking in for boarding, daycare, or grooming at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, ask John or JeanAnn about information regarding the supplement, NuJoint DS, which has assisted Beau in his arthritic issues.

Facial and Skincare Specials at Spa 9700

Fall

S

PA 9700’S annual fall focus on skin-

care will feature the latest in skincare treatments and facials from Eminence and Glo Therapeutics, including some specials on chemical peels! After a summer of beach trips, forgetting to apply sunscreen, and watching wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation become a problem, most people are ready to try to fix it, but how? Chemical peels are one of the most effective methods for improving damaged and aging skin. Many options are available, including everything from brightening the skin to correcting conditions like hyperpigmentation, scarring (such as in acne), wrinkling, and uneven surface texture. Also, they’re not just for the face. Other common areas to treat with peels are the chest, back, arms, hands, and feet. What is a chemical peel? In basic terms, acids are topically applied to the skin with the goal of stimulating cell turnover, resulting in the shedding of dead skin cells. Most of the “chemicals” are naturally derived from plants, fruits, and vegetables. The level or depth of the peel is determined by the makeup of the acids involved. You don’t have to fear chemical peels! When choosing which peel is right for you, enlist the help of one of Spa 9700’s experienced estheticians. She will analyze your skin, discuss your goals, and make recommendations for the best treatment. With the flexibility provided from a variety of peels, Spa 9700 can tailor your treatment to your lifestyle. Fantastic results can be attained from even gentle peels, and both Glo and Eminence now have at-home peels you can incorporate into your regular routine.

Meet Local Artist Allan D. Sibley

W

HAT INSPIRES

an English man to leave ever y thing behind and move “across the pond” to end up in Monroe County, Tennessee? The answer to the question is, of

course, a woman. Award winning artist, Allan D. Sibley, grew up in England, drawing since he could hold a pencil in his hand. Early on his father said, “I will raise no street painter.” But nothing could hold Allan back, and he applied, was accepted, and attended the Cambridge School of Art in the United Kingdom. He graduated and received the Licentiate to the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.

The Evolution of the Trunk Show

T

HE ORIGIN of the

“trunk show” dates back to the early 1800s when traveling salesmen journeyed from place to place, often by railway, with their steamer trunks filled with their wares. Today’s trunk shows are a far cry from those early days, as most salesmen now travel in their roomy and comfortable vehicles, which are designed for this purpose and where the setup is much like a showroom.

A trunk show is a special event within the fashion world in which an artist or designer puts on a special display of their best work for review by a select group of buyers or elite shopping divas! We agree, and since all of our clientele are the best of the best, we extend an invitation to each of you! A boutique such as The Lily Pad can give our “select group” of customers an opportunity to view the entire line and order pieces for themselves that may not be seen anywhere

T H E N N O W

59th Annual St. James Court Art Show October 2-4 • Louisville, KY

The 2015 St. James Court Art Show posters, designed by Richard Sullivan of Louisville, will be on sale in the poster booth #SJ-227

HISTORY

T

HE 59TH ANNUAL St. James Court

Art Show will be held October 2-4 in the heart of historic Old Louisville among the country’s largest collection of Victorian homes. The St. James Court Art Show has for more than five decades provided their neighborhood, city, and state with a rich cultural and artistic legacy. It has been ranked in the top 10 art shows in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine (September 2015). Previously the show has attracted more than 200,000 people and has featured 700 artists in the three square block show site. Once again the show will have some special features: » Shakespeare and Friends will be performing daily on the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheatre in Central Park from noon to 2 pm daily » The Garvin Gate Blues Festival is hosting a Blues Stage, where musicians will perform daily from 10 am to 6 pm » Lundy’s Special Events will be set up in Central Park with a new array of food and beverage options for patrons

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2015

Where do I park? This is one of the most asked questions at this time of year. A public parking map is shown on the website (www.sjcas.com) to help you find the perfect spot. » TARC will provide a transportation shuttle from the Brown Garage on Fourth St, which will run every 15 minutes » The Second Street Neighborhood Association operates a shuttle service from The Jefferson Community Technical College parking lot » Valet parking will also be available at 6th & Magnolia for $20 » Dupont Manual High School, YPAS, Noe Middle School, and Cochran Elementary will all have public pay lots available (prices vary) Rain or shine, the Art Show will take place on October 2-4. There is no admission fee. No pets are allowed in the show site. For more information, contact Margue Esrock at mesrock@stjamescourtartshow.com or visit www.sjcas.com.

St. James Court Art Show was founded on October 12, 1957 by St. James Court Association President, Malcolm Bird. Back in 1957, St. James Court Association was faced with an empty treasury, mounting debt for recent fountain repairs, and an immediate need to generate funds. The Art Show seemed to be a perfect means to pay the bills and bring residents together. The Art Show started simply enough. “At first, it was to be an art exhibit only, although open to anyone wishing to enter an exhibit,” wrote Marguerite Gifford in her 1966 history, St. James Court in Retrospect. “The pictures were hung on a clothesline extending from tree to tree.”

COMMUNITY

The St. James Court Art Show was originally established to provide necessary funding to maintain the St. James Court grounds and fountain. Proceeds from the show continue to allow St. James Court Association and Belgravia Court Association to fund ongoing grounds upkeep and neighborhood beautification efforts. Additionally, Fourth Street Association has utilized Art Show proceeds to fund the installation of new benches, urns, and trash bins along Fourth Street. Art Show proceeds also funded the Linear Park at 3rd & Hill and installation of period street lights.

The Real Source of Your Family’s Allergy-Like Symptoms

A

S CO-OWNER and founder of Mold

Drs. USA and Knoxville area’s only ACAC accredited residential mold remediation company, I am often called upon by homeowners to investigate the potential existence of mold and mildew in homes. Homeowners are often at a loss. Either they or Jeremy & Ashley Akers their children, or both, seem to be suffering from allergy type symptoms. But these same symptoms are reduced or even eliminated altogether when the sufferers visit friends, go to work, or go shopping. This year’s abundant moisture, humidity, and high temperatures have resulted in a growing number of homeowners and their families experiencing these allergy type symptoms. Frequently homeowners begin to make this connection and begin performing some inspections for mold in obvious places, both inside and outside of their homes. The challenge, however, is that mold can thrive, undetected, on nearly any surface in your home – especially cellulose-based surfaces, a known food source. The fact that you don’t find mold doesn’t mean mold doesn’t exist. Left undetected and untreated, mold related health conditions often worsen with time, leading to bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, and other chronic-like conditions. And as if these health related issues weren’t enough, mold can have a significantly negative impact on your home’s structure itself. If you suspect that you may have undetected mold in your home, my recommendation is that you consult an experienced mold remediation expert. Just who are the experts? That’s not always easy to determine, and because the mold remediation industry is loosely controlled in Tennessee, I would encourage you to seek the advice of an ACAC accredited residential mold remediation company. The ACAC (American Council of Accredited Certification) is your assurance that the mold remediation expert you select possesses the education, training, and experience needed to safely eliminate mold in your home, assuring your family’s health and safety. For a no-cost, no-obligation consultation, I encourage you to call me at 865-945-3000 today.

In a survey by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), 97% of allergists surveyed believe a pest-free home is an important step in preventing asthma and allergy symptoms. Mold is also an allergy and asthma trigger! A dirt basement or crawl space is an ideal location for moisture that can cause mold to grow, releasing airborne mold spores and dust mites that can migrate into your living space as indoor air pollutants and allergens. Dampness also causes wood to rot and makes it a desirable target for termites and the structural damage they can cause. Dayton’s uses the CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System (with 25-year warranty if using all recommended components) that transforms a damp crawl space or dirt basement into a clean, dry space. Be proactive in reducing your exposure to these aggravating health nuisances and call Dayton’s! New customers can receive $25 off a Fall Invader treatment or $250 off a CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, plus Dayton’s will beat any competitor’s price by $100 with equal components. RAMMY-NOMINATED flat-picking harmony duo The Milk Carton Kids have emerged in the last three years as a powerful voice defining the continuing folk tradition. A refreshing alternative to the foot-stomping grandeur of the so-called “folk revival,” an understated virtuosity defines The Milk Carton Kids to the delight of traditionalists and newcomers to the folk movement alike. Indeed, Garrison Keillor has called them “absolute geniuses in close-harmony” and has invited them onto A Prairie Home Companion three times in 2013, while cultural purveyors like T Bone Burnett and Billy Bragg continue to refer the importance of The Milk Carton Kids among a group of new folk bands expanding and contradicting the rich tradition that precedes them. The Los

Angeles Times lauds their latest Anti-Records release, The Ash & Clay, as displaying “absolute mastery of their craft,” while Paste emphasizes the “intellectual sophistication of their songs, making The Milk Carton Kids an option for purists unsatisfied with some of the pop tendencies seeping in to the genre.” In addition to a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album of 2013, The Milk Carton Kids also received a nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Awards. They are featured in T Bone Burnett & The Coen Brothers’ concert film documentary, “Another Day/Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis”, alongside Joan Baez, Jack White, Gillian Welch, Marcus Mumford, Punch Brothers, and many other folk luminaries and upstarts.

do the wrong things. If your family has a puppy in training or perhaps an older dog who has an occasional accident, and if you own Oriental rugs, you’ll know where I’m going with this article. When your pet has an accident on one of your Oriental rugs, don’t panic. If you act quickly, you can save your rug. Pet urine has a high alkalinity factor that can BEFORE potentially have a very negative effect on your rug’s wool and cotton fibers, which by nature are acidic. The alkaline solution can cause both the acidic dyes to bleed and can burn the rug’s acidic natural fibers. AFTER Left untreated, the pet urine will not only stain the rug, but it may also cause its fibers to begin to rot and deteriorate. Act quickly! Blot up as much of your pet’s urine as quickly as possible, and then call a professional Oriental rug cleaner who is both experienced and trained to clean and preserve Oriental rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have nearly three decades of carpet and rug cleaning experience. We are also unique in that we are one of the few Oriental rug cleaning specialists that have our own rug washing facility, where your rugs are professionally washed using our proprietary system, all under my personal supervision. But, once again, time is of the essence. While not all rugs can be saved, your probability for success is enhanced by swift action. And while we’re on the subject, if your home’s upholstery or wall-to-wall carpet has spots that seem impossible to remove, I encourage you to call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. In our nearly 30 years of experience in carpet and upholstery cleaning, we have discovered a number of unique processes that will often remove stains that homeowners and other cleaning services were unable to remove. Whether Fido has had an accident on your favorite Oriental rug, or if you’ve got hard-to-clean spots on your carpeting or upholstery, one call to Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning may help get man’s best friend out of the dog house. Helpful Tips for Your Holiday Kitchen

F

ULL OF delicious

meals and family fellowship, the holiday season is a time for the kitchen to shine. Shae Design Studio has a few tips that will turn any kitchen, no matter the size, into the ultimate entertaining space. When laying out a kitchen, the first and one of the most important things to think about is your work triangle. This triangle is composed of the refrigerator, sink, and cook surface. By having these three elements in a triangle, or close formation, it keeps separate zones in your kitchen for prep, cooking, and cleaning. Keeping the kitchen in these three zones helps maximize its functionality and also allows several people to utilize each zone without creating congestion. For the holidays, you can have several worker bees helping make the meal without stepping all over each other. The second tip is having the proper appliances. If your home

is a constant location for entertainment, it’s important to have appliances that will support having large groups of people over. A refrigerator with spacious shelving is perfect for holding family-sized meals, and a large freezer makes it convenient to store dishes prepared several days ahead of time. A double oven is also a great amenity; a popular way to gain double ovens is by using a drawer microwave that also functions as a convection oven, which is both space saving and budget friendly. Having that double oven also means that you

won’t have to wait on your turkey to bake your pie. The third key is having a large display surface to put all of that hard work. This can be a long stretch of countertop, a peninsula, or an island. Having a display surface allows a space for food to be easily served without people having to reach over each other. It’s important to keep this space at one of the outer edges of the kitchen so there’s plenty of room in the kitchen for food preparation. The final tip to creating the perfect entertainment space is

SHAE

the addition of a large island. The best reward in a renovated kitchen is the feeling of community gained with a new, fun, and functional space. The island helps create that feeling by providing a place where friends can gather, informal meals happen, or just a landing spot to tinker on your laptop. The best part about an island is it’s the perfect place to use our third tip and display all of your goodies for your holiday meals. Whether you have a spacious or small area to work with, Shae Design Studio can help open your space and prepare it for the holidays. Ask us about our special holiday discount, and we can have your kitchen renovated and ready for Thanksgiving.

Garage Flooring Make Sure It’s Durable

G

ARAGE REMODELING is currently

the fastest growing segment of the homeimprovement industry. It’s a separate room – and often the largest room in the house – that is not only a place to park a car but can be used for various purposes: A workshop, warehouse, kids’ toy storage, or simply a place to hangout. To give the garage a finished look and make it a more user-friendly space that’s easy to clean, renovations usually include a floor coating. While there are a few flooring options, the decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, installed by PremierGarage. Do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with. The down side is that many things can go wrong during application. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes days for it to dry and bond to the floor. Also, epoxy quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tire bonds to the surface and pulls the epoxy from the concrete, creating unsightly peeling and future costs for repair. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, Flooring Division Manager for PremierGarage. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, company technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other primary benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling, or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant » Commercial grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements, front porches, and retail stores. Once is All It Takes

Are you frustrated because your floors look dingy no matter how often you clean them? Don’t feel bad. It’s not your fault!

O

VER TIME, dirt and contaminants

are absorbed into the porous surfaces of your floors, which dull tiles and cause grout to darken. When you clean your floors with a mop, you are only able to penetrate the uppermost layer, leaving nasty stuff to fester underneath. Scrubbing has a tendency to push soil deeper into the floor, causing unsightly staining and permanent darkening. Traditional cleaning methods simply aren’t able to extract grime that is embedded in your surfaces. It takes a combination of high heat (to open the pores in your floor), high suction, and pressure, as well as a quality emulsifier, to adequately remove all the junk under the surface. Only the perfect combination of pressure, heat, and extraction will effectively remove all foreign contaminants from hard surfaces, leaving them spotlessly clean and sanitized.

Once your floors have been redeemed to their former beauty, you may choose to seal them. Surface Doc’s sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors and countertops, tile and grout, and many others. Since the molecules penetrate deep into porous materials, they bond permanently together, thus creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic, sunlight, and even high pressure hosing. Using Surface Doc’s lifetimeguaranteed sealer ensures that no nasty grime will ever darken your floors again. Sealers also make cleaning in the future a breeze and will guarantee your floors look like new for years to come. John and his Surface Doc crew can safely

Living Large in Adequate Size Homes

T

Jenny Blalock

HERE IS A NATIONWIDE TREND. We’re starting to see more

luxury homes with less square footage but with all the same high-end fixtures and finishes of their much larger peers. In years previous, downsizing was more about simplifying, doing with less. Now many homeowners say they still want all the nice stuff – the high-end refrigerator, the heated marble floors, and the swimming pool out back – but want to put it in a smaller footprint. I attribute this at least partly to everyone and their mother’s new penchant for the “open floor plan,” which instantly makes homes feel bigger and airier and tends to make rooms more multipurpose. Because of modern floor plans, a 3,000 square foot house might feel more like a 3,500 square foot home – all because of the way it’s laid out. Today’s home plans accommodate the modern homeowner’s tastes, which blur the kitchen, dining room, and living room into a single space. Luxury Homes That Are Better, Not Bigger A luxury home plan doesn’t have to be a mansion. While they are typically large and expansive, you can find lots of moderate sized home plans in most luxury home plan collections. In fact, a recent trend in the housing industry is to design smaller house plans with luxurious upgrades and details. Many homeowners are forgoing excessive square footage specifically so they can spend their money on the high-end fixtures of their dreams. Why have four bedrooms when you can instead build the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of without sacrificing a thing? You have seen it written before about how the dining room is being phased out; this also suggests that homeowners use space more economically by adding a guest “niche” rather than a guest room and by making their outdoor space more like an outdoor living room. This new trend has also created some pricing confusion among buyers. Simply put, a 3,500 square foot luxury home will cost less than a 5,000 square foot luxury home in total but may cost more per square foot. That’s because many costs such as land costs remain the same no Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

matter what size home you build. You also have to consider the amenities and the cosmetic features in the home. The truth is that the desire for a massive home is the dream of many, but it’s likely not going to be reality for many in today’s economic environment. Many people love their larger homes. But it’s great that this new trend creates an opportunity for people who love

luxury but don’t necessarily desire to keep up with – and furnish – a cavernous home that’s simply too big for them. For a free, no-obligation consultation for your new home, contact Jenny Blalock at 865-755-4680 or visit www.luxehomesdesign.com. With a well-thought out plan, your new luxury dream home is closer to being a reality than you might have imagined.

How Often Do You Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces?

Home

I F YO U R H O M E isn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely not enough. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating today’s popular outdoor “living areas” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor living spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Because these retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes, they also help to provide a seamless transition with your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. Start enjoying your home’s outdoor living spaces to their full potential today. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

BY LISA GRUGIN

September in the Garden S

EPTEMBER IS one

of my favorite months of the year. The heat and humidity are starting to lessen, and I can actually enjoy sitting on my patio again. My children are no longer school age (although one is a teacher now), but I still feel that same sense of new beginning. September is a “do-over” month, and that mentality needs to extend out into your yard. I’m sure there are several things out there that are showing some signs of stress. The heat and humidity of the spring and summer created an insect and fungal breeding ground! It was also so wet that some of your trees and shrubs may have lost root mass. Just as you lose muscle if you don’t work out, plants that don’t have to seek out moisture get lazy. When the rain stops, they struggle. Let’s talk about things you should do this month: » As always, the first thing I suggest is to go outside and walk around your yard. Check for signs of insects or diseases on

plants and broken or damaged branches on trees and shrubs. What needs to be cut back, divided, or pruned? What needs a boost with fertilizer? What just needs to go to the compost bin? » Let me remind you that for the past two years, we got very little rain during the fall months. It didn’t rain at my house the entire month of September last year. Don’t put those hoses away just yet. » Fall is the best time to plant most trees and shrubs, as well as some perennials. If you have some plants in your yard that have succumbed to the elements, stop by and pick out replacements. » Do you have perennials that need to be moved or divided? Fall is a good time to take on that task. Most garden guides suggest dividing spring bloomers in the fall and summer/fall bloomers in the spring. Call if you have questions. » It’s critical to do a fall cleanup! Pull out ugly annuals, cut back dying

perennials, and cut dead or sickly branches out of trees and shrubs. It’s especially important to pick up any diseased leaves that are lying on the ground. Many of our plants had trouble with leaf spot diseases this year, and leaves allowed to stay on the ground put fungal spores back into your soil. » Containers and hanging baskets may be looking a little tired. Trim, fertilize, and replace as necessary. Containers can also be transitioned to fall by adding mums and pansies. » Speaking of mums and pansies, let’s have a mini biology lesson. In Tennessee, there’s no such thing as a “winter” pansy. Pansies are usually planted in the fall, will survive all winter, and will be gorgeous next spring. As for mums, the ones you buy this time of year are, for the most part, hybrids. They will need to be planted in the ground by mid/late September if you want them to come back. Because they are hybrids, they may be a different color next year, or they may come back as a mass of little “mumlets.” There’s also no such thing as a mum that blooms from August until November. Mums have a four to six week bloom time. Heat shortens the blooms, and cool weather extends it. If you want continuous color, you’ll need to swap them out a couple of times. They compost well. » Did you have a vegetable garden? If so, keep harvesting the remnants of your summer vegetables and plant cool season veggies as the summer ones die out. Get your garden ready for next year by cleaning out debris and adding compost. » Houseplants that have been outside for the summer will need to be treated with an insecticide before you bring them back inside. This will prevent unwanted houseguests like aphids, whiteflies, and ants. » You may need to do a little pruning now to remove dead or diseased branches or to tame unruly plants. Save the severe pruning for later, however. Hard pruning encourages new growth, and that new growth will be in danger if we get an early frost or freeze. » Mulch helps keep the moisture levels and temperature of your yard stable during the winter and also acts as a weed deterrent. If you piled it on in the spring, fluff it up with a rake. If you didn’t put any on this spring, a couple of inches will help plants get through the cold months. As always, give us a call or send us an email if you have questions. Better yet, stop in and see us. We want to help you make your yard beautiful!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

SEDUM

NO ONE CAN say exactly how many species

of sedum there are on the planet. Some may have yet to be discovered, and some are subject to taxonomic debate and get booted out of the sedum genera, while other succulent plants are shifted in. A good estimate would be about 600 species, and then there are the many hybrids and various differing clones that have given rise to numerous popular cultivars. It’s complicated. Maybe that is why I am dismayed when I see one of the many “pop” gardening sites that recommend “sedum” as a tough plant. Many of them definitely are. I know of an ancient Sedum spectabile, an upright clumping form, that has been in the same concrete urn at a friend’s house since my high school days nearly a half century ago. That durability is not a constant for all sedum. I have watched a number of them struggle and die in our challenging Tennessee climate. Some couldn’t tolerate the heat, others the cold, and for others, it was the moisture, especially during the winter months. The one thing that all sedum have in common is a need for good drainage. I have also seen many sedum that decided they would survive but look nothing like they do in other regions of the country. Purple-foliaged forms often turn the color of milky coffee in our summer heat, or the spreading groundcover types become leggy and sparse, with more stem than foliage. A few of them perform admirably. Chinese sedum, Sedum tetractinum, is one that warrants wider use for its good looks in all four seasons and its ability to tolerate less than ideal conditions. Like most succulents, it is noted for drought tolerance but also is forgiving if it occasionally gets more water than ideal. While often listed as a plant for full sun, Photo by C. Reese, courtesy UTIA

it tolerates partial shade admirably, staying dense and pretty in the UT Gardens, Jackson, where it only gets a few hours of morning sun. This low-growing, spreading sedum is like the proverbial loaves and fishes, so anytime you want to share it, or have it in another place in the garden, simply lift a chunk and plop it in place, with just enough soil contact for it to take hold. A couple of waterings and it will be home free. It’s easy to pull up where unwanted. I’ve also found it to be a cheerful companion in container combinations, even when paired with plants that like regular watering such as coleus, as long as the container medium is of a good porous quality. Hardy to zone 5, it should be utilized more throughout the state and will provide interest yea r-round, turning a n interesting bronze-green with reddish tips in winter. In midsummer, clusters of small yellow flowers attract butterflies. In Jackson, it can be seen at the UT Gardens near the gazebo, under the ‘Little Woody’ redbud. You may find Chinese sedum in nurseries labeled with the more colorful marketing name, coral reef sedum. Carol Reese is the Western Region Ornamental Horticulture Specialist for University of Tennessee Extension. Her office is located in the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Jackson. The University of Tennessee Gardens located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public except during designated special events. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu.

Home for Sale? Make a Video! ONE OF THE KEY services a real estate agent

provides you is marketing. Agents use many tools to get your home exposure, including MLS, print ads, online syndication, direct mail, social media, and others. One tool that is sometimes overlooked is video. Video shows off your home in ways photography can’t, and buyers love it. Real estate listings with a video receive four times more inquiries than those without. Not only does video make your home look good, but it brings better results! A video is 50 times more likely than a text page on the same topic to appear on the first page of Google search results. Google loves video! It’s no wonder since they own YouTube. Did you know more than one billion unique users visit YouTube each month? If you use social media much, especially Facebook, you’ve probably noticed videos showing up more and more. Facebook users now watch more than four billion video streams a day, four times what they watched a year ago! Imagine if people were sharing and liking a video of your home. It’s possible and more affordable than you think. Quality video can be expensive, but a local company, homesandVIDEOS.com, makes it affordable, starting around $200 depending on the square footage. They’ve been specializing in real estate video since 2006 and take care of everything. They shoot, write the script, edit, and post the video online to a number of sites, including YouTube, Facebook, HomesAndLand.com, and others. If you’re selling your home, make sure your real estate agent contacts Russell Haskins at homesandVIDEOS.com to find out more. Your home is just one view away from being sold. Visit Knoxville made this announcement at a press conference held at their offices last month. “This decision was not an easy one, and it was not made without serious discussion with our board and input from community members,” stated Kim Bumpas, President of Visit Knoxville. “For the past several years, Visit Knoxville has been pleased to present Boomsday – one of the largest Labor Day weekend fireworks shows in the nation. Like many of you, I look forward to this event every year. As a longtime Knoxville resident, I am tied to its history.” In the past, Boomsday was funded entirely by Visit Knoxville and corporate sponsors. In an effort to fund and “save” Boomsday last year, Visit Knoxville attempted to create a ticketed event. This attempt was met with unsurmountable obstacles that hinder future efforts. “We have looked at various ways to continue the event, but ongoing funding issues related to lack of interest prevents us from

obtaining the proper level of sponsor dollars to make the event sustainable,” said Bumpas. Boomsday 2015 will again feature more than five tons of dynamite lighting the sky to a soundtrack created by Star 102.1. Early in the day there will be food vendors and entertainment. WTNZ, powered by WBIR Channel 10, will be airing the event live. Boomsday 2015 will wrap up a weekend of events, all FREE to the public: Friday, September 4 » 2015 Knoxville Powerboat Classic Volunteer Landing, Tennessee River 10:30 am – noon testing / 1:00 - 5:00 pm races » Tennessee Soccer vs. Navy UT’s Regal Soccer Stadium 7:00 pm Saturday, September 5 » 2015 National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Knoxville Memorial Stair Climb Sunsphere at World’s Fair Park 9:00 am

Five Fabulous Fall Upgrades Can Extend Your Deck Time This Year WHO SAYS you have to give up time on the deck you love just because sum-

mer is almost over? Whether you’re just relaxing or tackling home improvement projects, time outdoors is a great way to recharge at the end of a hectic day or tiring week. A few simple do-it-yourself updates can help you enjoy your deck this fall and throughout the rest of the year.

1. Add decorative touches like post caps and privacy lattice. Just having a deck adds value to your home, but you can easily make yours more appealing and enjoyable by adding some decorative touches. Post caps are an easy-to-install way to dress up an ordinary deck railing. Deck product manufacturers offer extensive post cap options, including wood designs, metal, and decorative caps that incorporate stained glass, metal accents, and even solar lighting. Lattice is another way to add interest to your deck while creating privacy at the same time. Durable plastic lattice allows you to visually shield areas of your deck or block off the space beneath your deck to keep animals from slipping under it. 2. Light the way to longer hours of enjoyment. As summer winds down, days grow shorter. Adding lighting to your deck can help you enjoy fall evenings outdoors. Low-voltage LED lighting can help illuminate steps, accent your deck railing, and create areas of interest – all while using less electricity to save you money. There are LV light systems available that easily clip onto deck railings, making installation quick and easy for most DIYers.

3. Plant the seeds of great seasons to come. Landscaping adds value and relaxation to a deck area. Wooden planters are a great way to enhance a deck’s visual appeal. Building a planter is an easy weekend project and provides you the perfect location to plant some fall veggies as well. Add a removable lid to the planting box and you can turn it into additional seating when the growing season is over. When spring comes, remove the lid and you’re ready to plant spring vegetables or flowers.

Don’t let fall drive you indoors too soon. A few simple updates can allow you to enjoy your deck throughout the autumn months.

4. Warm up the décor. Fall is a great time to score deals on outdoor décor. Deck furniture, outdoor area rugs, and decorative items all go on sale as summer ends – even though there will still be some warm days and evenings left in which to enjoy your outdoor spaces. Simply replacing worn furniture and adding an area rug can make your deck feel warmer and more inviting. 5. Heat up your outdoor space. Of course your outdoor environment will eventually get chilly as fall settles in. Why not add an outdoor heater to extend your deck time even longer? Home improvement and lawn and garden stores sell a variety of patio heaters in a range of designs to fit every space, taste, and need. A single, well-placed heater can provide enough warmth to keep your entire deck comfortable on a chilly fall evening. Need an additional source of warmth to supplement your patio heater? Fire up the grill and fill the fall air with the aroma of grilled treats!

Stevie Wonder Announces Extended Fall 2015 Run of “Songs in the Key of Life Performance” Tour Tour comes to Knoxville on November 10th

L

EG E N DA RY SIN G E R,

songwriter, musician, and producer, Stevie Wonder, recently announced an extended and final run of dates for his Songs in the Key of Life Performance tour due to popular demand. Wonder will bring the criticallyacclaimed performance, which is a live adaptation of the iconic Songs in the Key of Life album, to 20 North American cities beginning September 30 in Montreal, QC. Produced by Wonder Productions and Live Nation and promoted by Live Nation, the tour will continue to cities such as Washington, DC, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, and Kansas City before concluding in New York City at Madison Square Garden on November 24. These 20 dates follow the tour’s initial extended run of dates in March 2015; those dates were added as a result of high demand from the tour’s initial run in the late fall of 2014. While returning to many cities, many fans will have the chance to see the show for the first time in their area. This leg will mark the final performances in a live tour setting in the U.S. The final show at Madison Square Gar56

den will bring the tour full circle as Stevie concludes the tour at the same venue it began on November 6, 2014. Rolling Stone declared that “the show is possibly 2014’s greatest testament to the limitless potential of American music itself,” while Billboard stated that “the music still resonates” and that Wonder provides an “electrifying concert... and had the audience roaring and standing on its feet.” Throughout his career, the celebrated singer has amassed 49 Top 40 singles, 32 #1 singles, and worldwide album sales of more than 100 million units. He has received 25 Grammy Awards, an Oscar, and a Golden Globe; is an inductee into the Rock and Roll, Songwriters’, and NAACP Halls of Fame; and is the youngest recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. Stevie has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and is a designated U.N. Messenger of Peace, with special focus on persons with disabilities. He continues to be pivotal in U.S. and world events, demonstrating the activism that has made him such a vital voice for social progress and world harmony. Jeff Daniels J

EFF DANIELS. At the mention of

his name, fans and film buffs will think of one of his roles in one of his 61 movies. Or, perhaps, it’s because of his role as Will McAvoy in HBO’s The Newsroom or even his magnificent work on the stage. It’s safe to assume that most people have seen Daniels act in one role or another at some point in the past 35 years. What might not be known is that he is also quite an accomplished performing guitarist. I first became aware of Daniels’ guitar work a few years ago thanks to a cover story in Guitar Aficionado magazine. Precise. Prolific. Fun. All of this and more describes Mr. Daniels’ mastery of the six string. Daniels called me from his home in Chelsea, Michigan, to discuss his musical career and his then-upcoming tour. I asked him how the preparations for that tour were coming along. “We’re kind of doing something that we did before,” he said. “We just get to do it again. We went out initially in August. I said, ‘I’ve got some songs. I want to go out with just a band. Let’s get some old guys and do a Viagra band, like the commercial.’ Then I was like, ‘Wait a minute! I’ve got these twenty-somethings and early thirty-somethings right here, and they’re great musicians. The whole father/son thing… let’s see if it can work.’ And it did! It worked great.” Daniels has recorded a couple of solo albums and still records great music for appreciative fans. About that body of work, he said, “Yeah, 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2015

I do a lot of solo stuff. Keep It Right Here was an upright bass, a banjo occasionally, and a lot of fiddle and mandolin. It was like a trio with some other added instruments. Days Like These was fuller with more musicians. Daniels then answered the question about what fans can expect from one of his shows. “I make sure they have a good time. I make sure they’re entertained. I talk to them. They will do stuff at this show that they’ve never done at any other show, which may include getting up and doing a drunken dance that was made famous in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Any number of things can happen along with a song that stops the show and makes you cry. I love mixing it up like that. It’s a replica of my acting career from Dumb and Dumber to The Newsroom.” In the aforementioned interview in Guitar Aficionado, Daniels is quoted as saying, “I’ve found out that listeners don’t want me to demand they take me seriously as a musician or an artist or a rock and roll star. They’re not going to let me do that. But if I quietly lure them in with some behind-the-scenes acting stories – the whole ‘Here’s what it’s like’ thing – and drop the guitar playing on them and then the songwriting… by the end of it they’re on their feet or buying CDs. Or at least going, ‘No, he’s not William Shatner. He’s okay.’" I asked him if that all turned out as he had hoped and if there were surprises, musically, along the way.

“It’s gotten easier, because more and more people are aware that there’s this music side to me,” he said. “I’ve played and played well. I like the challenge of standing in a room with an acoustic guitar, knowing there are any number of good guitar players sitting in the audience. If it’s anything like Hollywood, it’s ‘I just bought a ticket to see you fail.’ The worst place to do a screening of a movie is Hollywood, because everyone is there waiting to say, ‘Oh, good. It’s horrible.’ “I’ve been working on the guitar since the late ‘70s. I’ve stuck to the acoustic guitar and continue to work with people like Stefan Grossman. Keb’ Mo’ has been a huge friend and has helped me a little bit. I’ll never be Kelly Joe Phelps. I’ll never be Keb’. I’ll never be Stefan, but I can try to get better every day. I’ve done that. I can lay that out there in front of not only the audience, but the guitar players in the audience.” As for what’s on Daniels’s career radar during the next five years, he shared: “I’m going to be busy as an actor. I thought it would slow down by this age, but it hasn’t. It’s only picked up. I just signed to do the Shailene Woodley Divergent trilogy. I’m in the third and fourth movies that we’re shooting in Atlanta this summer. There might be some Broadway. There are some other movies calling for 2016, so it’s good to be me right now.” Read the expanded version of this interview on www.boomerocity.com.

The 2015 East Tennessee Preservation Conference Will Feature Donovan Rypkema

F

ALL IS one of the most beautiful

times of the year in East Tennessee, and one of the many great events in the region is the annual Preservation Conference. Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) are proud to partner with many organizations and individuals to bring this conference to our region October 22-24. This annual gathering of historic preservation enthusiasts celebrate and share how to capitalize on cultural heritage and historic places. Participants include preservation professionals and others working within the fields of architecture, tourism, government, economic development, real estate, education, or any area where knowledge of historic preservation principles and practices have proven to be a valuable contributor to success. It’s a great event for both learning and networking, and it’s fun! To celebrate its 7th year, the conference is being held in downtown Knoxville. As the heart of the Middle East Tennessee region, the location couldn’t be more perfect. Primary sessions will be held at the East Tennessee History Center, and the conference will include an opening reception and hands-on workshops at Historic Westwood. Once again the Tennessee Historical Commission will be providing specialized training for Certified Local Government and Historic Zoning Commission members. A variety of walking tours to sites in downtown Knoxville will also be part of the conference experience. An exciting new feature this year will be the introduction of the first East Tennessee Preservation Gala. The Gala will showcase successful preservation efforts throughout the region and will include the annual East Tennessee Preservation Awards. This year’s keynote speaker and special guest will be Donovan Rypkema. Mr. Rypkema is recognized as an industry leader in the economics of preserving historic structures. He is principal of PlaceEconomics, a Washington, DC-based real estate and economic development consulting firm. The firm specializes in services to public and nonprofit-sector clients who are dealing with downtown and neighborhood commercial district revitalization and the reuse of historic structures. Since 1983, Mr. Rypkema has provided ongoing consulting services to the National Trust for Historic Preservation 60

As a business owner I receive calls every day from advertising reps asking me to spend money with them. Whether it’s print, radio or television, they all suggest that their advertising method is the best way to get my message out to potential clients. They have a high hill to climb, because Everything Knoxville already does a great job of finding potential customers for us. Everything Knoxville puts out a quality monthly publication that is mailed directly to homeowners. That means my customers pull the magazine directly out of their mailbox, making it more likely for them to read. We track our client phone calls from several advertising sources, and Everything Knoxville does better dollar for dollar than any other publication I’ve advertised in. Thanks Judy and Tom!

HoLa Hora Latina Hosts the 2015 HoLa Festival

T

HE BOARD of Directors of HoLa

Hora Latina has announced that the 2015 HoLa Festival will be Saturday evening, September 26, and Sunday afternoon, September 27. The HoLa Festival is an annual event held every fall since 2000 during Hispanic Heritage Month and has grown steadily throughout the years. Last year’s HoLa Festival 2014 drew around 30,000 people – many from outside the Knoxville area. The HoLa Festival is a celebration of Hispanic culture and features Hispanic music, dance, food, and other cultural entertainment. The event, which will take place at Market Square in downtown Knoxville, is open to the public without charge, and parking in the adjacent city parking lots will be free. While details of the event are still being finalized, HoLa is pleased to announce the confirmation of the Hispanic salsa band Jimmy Bonilla for Saturday evening and for Sunday. Salsa Knox will be a featured dance group Sunday afternoon performing an exhibition of authentic salsa, as well as offering salsa lessons. Another very unique

dance ensemble, Ballet Folklorico Mexican Tradition of Julio Ruiz from North Carolina, will present two performances Sunday afternoon of authentic and very colorful Mexican cultural music and dances. New this year! The traditional Festival of Nations Parade, featuring the dress and flags of many Hispanic countries, will take place on Gay Street Sunday afternoon so that everyone may get a better look at the parade. Also, the festival will include a significant additional number of food and craft vendors, as well as activities for the children. The Hispanic population of Knox County has increased rapidly during the past few years. As of 2013, Hispanics totaled 3.7% of the total population, and it’s estimated to be much greater now. While celebrating Hispanic culture is a prime focus of the event, it is a very special and important opportunity for all people of East Tennessee to get a better understanding and appreciation of the culture of local Hispanic people. For more information about the HoLa Festival, call the HoLa office at 865-335-3358 or visit www.holafestival.org. September 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Justin Crowe F

OR JUSTIN CROWE, 4-H is not

just about agriculture – it’s a way to help teens with all sorts of things. Justin, an extension specialist who works with 4-H Youth Development with the University of Tennessee Extension, has worked hard on the 4-H Health Rocks! program. “In today’s society, young people have so much information being pushed at them that they are much more susceptible to drug abuse, in my opinion,” he said. “Our 4-H Health Rocks! program helps address this problem with a 10-hour educational program, which reached more than 19,000 youth statewide last year. Childhood obesity is another major issue. Our youth need information (for themselves and to take home to their parents) about healthy food choices and the importance of physical activity.” Justin began his career with UT Extension in 2003 as a 4-H Agent in Davidson County. Before that, he was a 4-H member and volunteer. “My 4-H agent growing up was one of the most selfless people I knew,” he said. “She worked countless hours to make sure that the youth in my county had opportunities. knew I wanted that same opportunity to help others for my career.” Justin holds a bachelor’s degree from Freed Hardeman University, a master’s degree from Tennessee Tech, and is currently completing his doctorate from UT Chattanooga. “I have the best job in the world – I mean that,” he said. “An average day includes two or three conference calls with funders, program partners or 4-H agents, working on a budget for a grant, planning an upcoming in-service training, etc.” Justin also oversees several grants totaling around $500,000, trains 4-H agents, meets with program partners, helps out with state 4-H events, advises the State 4-H Council and the 4-H All-Star program, works with the Tennessee 4-H Performing Arts Troupe, and advises collegiate 4-H at the state level, as well as at UTK. “I LOVE working with teens,” said Justin. “Getting to work with state 4-H council, collegiate 4-H, etc. is just the rejuvenation I need

When I am able to provide them funding or resources to do their job, it literally makes me smile! I feel that my purpose is to help people, and I am fortunate to get to do that every day.” Justin wants people to know that 4-H is as strong as ever, offering all sorts of programs for teens. “Our young people still show steers, raise hogs and sheep, to name a few,” he said. “They are still involved in nutrition and sewing. Additionally, though, we also offer programs in computers, electric, photography, etc. We have 26 different projects that our 4-H members can choose from. It’s an opportunity to market 4-H and educate people on what all we have going on.”

Business

Putting the “Customer” into “Service”

W

E ALL KNOW how to pro-

nounce it, and most every small business owner includes it in their company’s advertisements, but unfortunately, very few entrepreneurs truly embrace it. But those that do experience a level of success that makes them the envy of their peers. Genuine customer service is more of a personal philosophy than a catch phrase. It’s a core belief that everyone in the organization embraces. It means that your spoken word is more valuable than another person’s written contract. It means that your clients trust that you place their interest ahead of your own. It means going the extra mile. It also means that you don’t promise your customers a 100% effort, substitute a 70% effort, and hope that they don’t notice the difference. It doesn’t mean that you’re perfect either or that you won’t make mistakes. But it does mean that you own your company’s mistakes and, that as owner, accept full responsibility.

In today’s competitive marketplace, many entrepreneurs may feel that they cannot afford to provide the high level of customer service that will truly differentiate them from their competitors. The fact is, you can’t afford not to. You don’t place the blame on anyone else. In today’s competitive marketplace, many entrepreneurs may feel that they cannot afford to provide the high level of customer service that will truly differentiate them from

their competitors. The fact is, you can’t afford not to. The financial reality of poor customer service is that poor customer service costs far more than great customer service. The cost of returns, rework, multiple customer visits, time wasted, etc., not to mention a dissatisfied customer who freely shares their negative experience with countless others, is far greater than the cost of doing it right the first time. And here’s another reality. Great customer service will probably cost you far less than you might have imagined. Why? Because mediocrity is so pervasive in today’s society that simply doing what you promised to do is often perceived by customers as great customer service.

The Purpose of Purpose Does your life have a purpose? HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of

books have been written on the topic of “how to find your life’s purpose.” Many are from a religious nature, some from a career perspective, others self help. Yet, even with so many instructive books, there are still many questions about finding a simpler answer for living a life driven by a purpose. My passion is purpose. Because I’ve spent years interviewing others, often the topic is a central focus of such discussions. At the center of my interest is my Christian faith, the hope of a bigger picture that has a broader meaning. No matter one’s reasoning, we all want to live a life that matters and makes a difference. Today’s fast forward culture demands tremendous pressure to do it all. While people are busy trying to get ahead, the competitive nature of busyness is counter intuitive to our innate drive to make the world a better place. We simply can’t do it all, have it all, and be it all. We must choose what we do and why we do it with a deep level of commitment that is rooted in self-confidence.

» What keeps you up a night? Even though we’re part of the information age, most of us have hot button issues buried under an avalanche of topics that are not of interest. Your internal radar senses those topics that are important to you: Homelessness, addiction, health, children, family, faith, equality, politics. There are many causes worthy of attention. » What keeps you distracted? Recognizing my limitations, the lens from which I make commitments helps. If it doesn’t have to do with my faith, my family, key relationships, or my business, then I’m not likely to commit to it. Otherwise I’m making commitments to things that don’t line up with my plan towards purpose. » What keeps you focused? Discipline. If you’re too busy, you know it. If you’re doing too much, you know it. If you’ve said yes more than you’ve said no, you know it. We all have those tendencies. Doing something about it is where you set yourself apart. Take a look at your calendar. Where are the wastes of time?

Quit being guilted into doing things that have nothing to do with the path towards your purpose. The purpose of purpose is that you pursue that purpose. Be confident of that which you are gifted to do. Take charge of the vision for your life. Don’t hide behind “one day.” Every day is an opportunity to be driven by purpose and passion. Don’t sell yourself short. As cliché as it may sound, only you can be you. Don’t compare yourself with others; spend time evaluating how you truly want to invest your time and make your decisions fall in line with that pursuit. The purpose of purpose? To clarify, not confuse. It’s up to us to pursue that which we were made for. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Family Life

Planning a Family Reunion I

F YO U have always dreamed of

planning a family reunion, but the task seemed overwhelming, here are some tips that will take the confusion out of it. Length and Type of Event The first decision you will need to make about your family reunion is determining what type of reunion you want to plan. For instance, will it be a short event like an afternoon or evening get-together, or will it be an all-day event or a longer weekend event? Try to plan something that everyone can participate in – no matter their situation. Consider the age, health, and finances of your extended family. Get Family Interest Once you have decided on the type and length of the reunion you want to host, start contacting your family via email or phone to see if they would be interested in participating. If any family members show hesitation, see if you can determine why. Generally it is because they have time constraints, financial issues, or greater

distances to travel. However, do not let the hesitation of one or two people stop you from having your reunion. Set a Date After you have touched base with people in your family, take everything they said into consideration. Revise your event plans, if necessary. Then set a date for the reunion, being mindful of special events in people’s lives. The date you set should be a minimum of two to three months in the future. This will give everyone time to make plans. Once you have set the date, contact your family again and tell them the date. Plan to contact them again about one month prior to the reunion. Food When a large group of people get together, you will need to have a lot of food available. Determine how the food situation will be handled. It can be catered, you can cook the food yourself, or you can do a potluck. How extensive and detailed the food preparations and planning will become for you will be dependent on the type and length of family reunion you are planning. However, food

for even the most lengthy of events can be handled with ease if you start making your plans early and get others involved to help. Children While you and all of the adults at the family reunion may have a great time catching up and reminiscing, the children at your family reunion may not have such an easy time. Why? This may be the first time many of them have seen each other before. Have things for the children to do such as games, a craft table, scavenger hunts, special treats, and other things that will keep them busy. Once the ice has broken, the children should relax and begin to have fun, too. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. We Are One Human Family A LADY and a gentleman do not see each other as different, but rather as similar with unique and different qualities. What do I mean? I mean that instead of seeing each other and noticing what is different, like skin color, dress, education level, sense of humor, behavior, religion, sexual orientation, and the list goes on, we see each other as people – moms and dads, sons and daughters – all striving and hoping to find love, peace, acceptance, respect, appreciation, sincerity, and more. Yes, of course we may look different, but why notice? Why not look at each other through different lenses – the lenses that focus on the things that we have in common? I know we might think that we are not prejudiced or we do not notice differences, but often we do, and we do not even recognize it. For instance, have you ever said, “There was this cute little black boy on the 66

playground this morning…”? Why wouldn’t you just say, “There was this cute little boy on the playground this morning...”? Why would you ever point out his skin color? Why do you need to do that? What difference does it make? Does it make your story better? Does it play into some stereotype you are trying to make a connection to? Do you see how this is pointing out differences that aren’t important? I’m sure all of us want to be proud of our heritage, our culture, our families (at least I hope so), but a lady and a gentleman see each other as valued human beings that share common hopes and dreams. A lady and a gentleman strive to show value in each other and know that words really do matter. It’s a wonderful thing when people recognize valuable things about other cultures and races and draw attention to those beautiful things. Please be careful, however, not

to point to generalizations regarding races and cultures. None of us enjoy being placed in a big group and then having assumptions made about us depending on the group we have been associated with. We are unique. We have our own thoughts, ideas, and goals. Let’s give everyone the same benefit we desire – to be recognized for our accomplishments, our character, our integrity, our hard work.

for laser tattoo removal and skin revitalization treatments, offering impressive results without the typical downtime or discomfort. It is the first and only aesthetic picosecond laser that is FDA-cleared for the removal of tattoos and pigment, skin revitalization, and acne scarring. So how does the PicoSure Tattoo Removal Laser work? Ultra-short picosecond laser pulses (one trillionth of a second in length!) hit tattoo ink particles with a pressure so great that the ink shatters into tiny dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are more readily absorbed and eliminated by the body than with the older Q-switched nanosecond lasers. This results in better clearance of the tattoo in significantly fewer treatments. In a published scientific study, 100% of patients obtained greater than 75% clearance after two to four treatments with the PicoSure laser. With the recent addition on the 532 nanometer wavelength to the PicoSure laser, all tattoo ink colors – including red, orange, and yellow – can successfully be treated. PicoSure is not just for tattoo removal anymore. It turns out that the unique power PicoSure’s picosecond pulse duration can be focused to treat pigment irregularities such as melasma and freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, and even acne scars. The PicoSure Focus treatment offers impressive results without the typical downtime or discomfort that are frequently associated with other skin revitalization treatments. The Focus lens is a proprietary PicoSure attachment that magnifies the picosecond pulse 20X.
