IAM very excited as we wrap up this issue because we are headed to a cabin in Pickett State Park for the weekend. Pickett is located a little less than two hours northwest of here. Brett and I are meeting some of our good friends, plus our son and his wife are coming up from Nashville - woohoo! We discovered the Pickett area during the pandemic days - it was the perfect equi distant meeting place for our Nashville kids, so we gathered at Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area for a (socially distant) hike and a (bring your own food) picnic. The unusual rock formations there are truly amazing - it is a really beautiful area, plus it was nice to be in different surroundings after being cooped up in the house for so long. During that trip, we discovered that Pogue Creek Canyon - right outside of Pickett - was an officially designated Dark Sky Place per the International DarkSky Association. We knew of quite a few Dark Sky areas out west in Colorado, Utah, and Arizona but were surprised to find one so close to home! To learn more about what it takes to get a Dark Sky certifica tion - Obed Wild and Scenic River is another location here in East Tennessee - visit DarkSky.org. The friend we are meeting is a layman astronomer with the inquisitive mind, fancy telescopes, and knowhow to prove it, so he will be our official night sky guide. We have been waiting for a new moon - i.e. no moon, occurring about two weeks after the full moonfor optimal night sky viewing. This will give us the best view of constellations, shooting stars, satellites (yes, there are quite a few buzzing around up there now), and hopefully the Milky Way! I am so looking forward to our weekend away and am considering this trip to be my night owl version of “stop and smell the roses.” A break from the day-in day-out, a visit with good friends and family, and a valid reason to be up late!

This lake house was not missing the incredible view or stunning outdoor enter tainment space; however, the interior was in need of a design renovation that would reflect the magnificent exterior. As soon as Shae and Holly saw this space, they knew there was incredible potential for a luxurious design. The client is beautiful, stylish, and adventurous, which made her willing to take design risks. Shae and Holly wanted to weave her personality (and desire for comfort!) into the dynamic new layout. The lower level renovation would require contractors, materials selections, and a detailed design plan for the project. The SDS team began by creating 3D design renderings for a total kitchen transformation, including the removal of several walls. The existing small dining room was converted into a magnificent walk-in panty with an oversized fridge and freezer. The large keeping room was transformed into the new extravagant dining space with lake views that is now perfect for parties and entertaining. After opening up the kitchen footprint by removing walls, the design team anchored the dream kitchen by incorporating a custom 9-foot island with stunning quartz countertops and dramatic light fixtures.
Shae and Holly then began working on the custom furniture for the rest of the lower level. The large living room was the perfect place for an oversized sec tional, which they covered in a performance fabric that protects against stains, spills, and odors. Given the amount of light coming in from the reflection of the lake, the SDS design team wanted to make sure the custom, tailored draperies were as func tional as they were beautiful. To enhance the lake views, the SDS team used a neutral color palette and large scale prints. Layering textures and patterns made this luxuri ous design rich in detail. Even the selected rugs, hand-knotted out of soft bamboo, silk, and wool, add another layer to this dynamic design. To synchronize and balance the other elements, finishing touches and accessories were brought in from the Shae Design Showroom located in Franklin Square.

S URELY NOT only sweet tastings but sweet times can be found at a spot with honey in its name, right? This is exactly what we experienced at our most recent visit to Honeybee Coffee & Brewery in West Knoxville. It was a Saturday evening, we were exhausted by… you know… life things, needed to get out, and on a whim we decided to go to Honeybee for dinner. We had read that they are now offer ing their own brews and thought we’d give it a go. We are so glad we did. It was an absolute delight from the moment we walked in the door. As soon as we walked in, we were drawn to the beautiful sounds of Addie Levy’s voice and talent on the guitar. The open, light, and sunshine-filled space said, “Come on in. Have some food and drink. Sit down. Relax and stay awhile.” And we did. We had no idea there was a musician playing that eve ning, though we weren’t surprised since they invite musicians into their space regularly to share their music. It was lovely. The food was delicious. We had the Classic and Reuben Smash Burgers with kettle cooked chips and their savory house ranch. Denton got the Salute to the Hill Hazy IPA, and Lori had the Blueberry Lemon Pale Ale. Just wow. We knew it would probably taste good, but this super exceeded our expectations. Excellent local craft beer. Our time at Honeybee Coffee & Brewery was simply sweet and calming. The food was wonderful, and the craft beer was exceptional. The music was entertain ing, and the space was inviting. We appreciated how patrons listened and took in the music, offering a well-de served applause after each song. It was delight ful, and we will go back. Maybe even tomorrow. BY JACOB LUBBERS, OWNER G ROWING UP in Indiana, one of the things my friends and I looked forward to the most was a small backyard BBQ competition in Ferdinand, Indiana, called the Heimatfest. After purchasing a button for only $3, you could walk around and sample as much delicious BBQ as you could handle - it was great! There were always plenty of competing BBQ teams, and it was a big deal locally to win bragging rights for the upcoming year. After returning from college one summer, my buddies and I headed out to Heimatfest for delicious BBQ samples but were taken aback to find only three teams competing. Many of the previous teams were getting older and had “retired,” others had quit for one reason or another, and it seemed none of the younger crowd had picked up the BBQ competition tradition. Hometown pride immediately began to kick in! My friends and I decided then and there that we would not let Heimatfest die out if we could help it. First, we formed our own team. After forming our own five member team, we assigned each person in charge of one of the four meat categories to practice and named the other member Bloody Mary specialist. We began encouraging our peers to become involved, as well as reaching out to some of the teams who had simply lost interest. The next year six teams showed up (or 100% YOY growth if I am doing the mathEvenright)!though our team had been practic ing for a while, we came in with very low expectations, one old propane smoker, and a kettle grill. Some other teams may or may not have made a little fun of our setup! The first competition category announced was chicken. And guess what…? WE WON. We took first place in chicken and grabbed sec ond place in pulled pork on our way to a third overall finish! We were absolutely and hopelessly hooked, so from there our crew got together as much as possible for compe titions and have been overachieving ever since. What started as a few high school buddies not wanting a tradition to die has turned into a brand name that is trusted everywhere it is known. Along the way, we have found some tricks of the trade, taken home a lot of trophies, and created some pretty great sauces and seasonings of our own. Before Surface Doc, my husband, John, was missing out on so much happening in our family because he was working in restaurant management 60+ hours a week, mostly nights and weekends. • Grandparents’ scam: By studying Facebook or simply calling and saying “Hi Grandpa, do you know who this is?” scammers can pick up the names of grandchildren. Posing as the grandchild, the scammer says he’s got ten arrested or his car has broken down and he needs money fast. What grandparent doesn’t want to help their grandchild? So off they go to Western Union to send cash - for a totally fake scenario and the money is lost. Rule of thumb: If a grandchild calls, independently verify with another family member that they really need help, even if the grandchild asks you not to tell anyone. The list of scams goes on and on. I had the unfortunate task of telling her there was no such thing as the National Sweepstakes Bureau and she was getting scammed.Certainscams targeted at senior citizens are particularly egregious. According to the FBI, in 2021 there were more than 92,000 older fraud victims which led to $1.7 billion in losses, up 74% from just the prior year. Here are a few of the top senior scams:

• Government Impersonation Scams: Scammers call older adults and pretend to be from the IRS or Social Security. They tell them there are unpaid taxes and the senior will be arrested or their SS benefits cut off if they don’t pay immediately via wire transfer. Bank accounts are emptied and the senior’s identity stolen. Remember that NO federal agency will ever call. All legitimate communi cation is by mail.
• Robocalls: A common scam is using automa tion to dial a large number of households. The robocall says “Can you hear me?” and the senior says “yes.” The robocall disconnects and now the scammers have the senior’s voice signature captured that can be used to authorize unwanted credit card charges. What to do? Simply hang up if you ever answer the phone and hear those words.

With Rascal Flatts’ bassist, Jay DeMarcus, Jason has formed the super group Generation Radio with Journey drummer, Deen Castronovo, and guitarists Chris Rodriguez and Tom Yankton. The band’s sound brings to mind Chicago, Eagles, and, yes, Rascal Flatts, as well as Journey. It is this unique sound that will make Generation Radio THE new band to seek out in 2022-2023 and beyond.
Jason remembered, “The whole concept Jay always had was ‘Let’s put a band together with the talent levels of like an Eagles, where everybody sings strong, everybody writes.’ And that’s what we did.”
Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.
When asked if there were any surprises as the band and its new album came together, Jason replied, “I was not surprised because of the talent that we’re bringing to the table. Because you’re kind of going, ‘You shouldn’t be surprised that it turned out like it did.’ But when you actually hear it - Surprise, Surprise, Sergeant Carter. It’s like, wow! We knew from the first notes we played in the studio, and it was just coming back, feeling so great.”

“Well, going back to the very beginning, Jay DeMarcus played the Washington State Fair in 2002 with Rascal Flatts two days before Chicago. The lady who runs the event, who I’ve gotten to know over the years, said, ‘Jason, do you know who Rascal Flatts is?’ and I said no, that I was really not into country. She said, ‘Well, they’re big fans of you guys, and they’re so excited that they sold the grand stand out and knew you were going to be here a couple of nights later. Jay wanted me to give this to you.’
The subject shifted to Generation Radio, and Jason shared the backstory to its creation.
“I’m going to be able to get to hang out with my dad for a good three weeks when he comes out here for Elvis Week along with my other brothers and one of my sons will be there. My father is just amazing.”
J ASON SCHEFF. SON of Jerry Scheff, legendary bassist for Elvis, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Chris Hillman, and so many others. At age 23, young Jason joined Chicago, replacing Peter Cetera. Chicago. At age 23. Wow. Jason held that position for 31 years until his departure from the legendary band in 2016. It’s Jason’s voice that we hear on the band’s 1986 remake of their 1970 hit single “25 or 6 to 4” and “Will You Still Love Me.” After his departure, Jason joined Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Denny Laine (of Wings fame), and Badfinger’s Joey Molland for a tour of “It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles White Album.” He has also donated a significant amount of time performing for charities. It was at one such event that I first met Jason, as well as his son. Backstage at a 2019 Nashville fundraiser hosted by Jason’s dad’s former bandmate: the legendary James Burton, we had a brief conversation and parted ways agreeing that an interview was in order. Fast forward to today.
The new band’s self-titled debut album landed last month, giving Jason and me the perfect excuse to set up an interview. Before chatting about Generation Radio and the new album, I brought up Jason’s legendary father.
From that humbling letter with the Rascal Flatts CD, a close friendship began.
“She gave me their CD with a letter. I thought I was going to open the letter and it would say ‘Dear Chicago,’ but it said ‘Dear Jason, I’m a bass player in a band called Rascal Flatts. I’m a huge fan of Chicago. That’s what made me want to play music. And I’m a big fan of yours. I’ve followed your years with the band.’ “That was the moment for me where I realized wow, this is my legacy now. I grew up on Chicago in the ’70s. When I joined the band in ’85, I thought - along with a lot of other people - this is probably not going to work. I mean, come on, this kid is just not on this level. But something happened on the way to the office that I felt comfortable going in the studio with David Foster, and the rest is history.”
When Rascal Flatts decided to take a sabbatical just before the pandemic hit, Jason and Jay started laying the groundwork for Generation Radio. With friendships with Journey’s Deen Castronovo, as well as Tom Yankton and Chris Rodriquez, every thing began to gel.

One of the most important ways to pro tect your health when you’re spending the day outdoors is staying hydrated, especially on warm days when you’re more prone to losing your body’s water reserves to sweat. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day can help replenish what you lose so you don’t get dehydrated, and you’ll also have an easier time regulating your body’s temperature.
Repel Bugs Aggressive insects can put a damper on outdoor fun. Bug spray or roll-on prod ucts should go on top of your sunscreen but never under your clothes. Apply a sparing coat to all exposed skin and clothing, paying special attention to your waistband, pant and sleeve cuffs, collar, and socks. Rather than applying spray directly to your face, spray the palms of your hands then rub the repellant onto your face. Be sure to wash your hands afterward to avoid accidentally transfer ring spray to your mouth or eyes. If you have sensitive skin or prefer not to use spray or roll-on for other reasons, products like repellant fans or wearable repellant bracelets may be good alterna tives. Some essential oils are also natural bug repellants.
Stay Hydrated

Most large home improvement stores sell DIY epoxy garage floor kits. These kits often consist of relatively inexpensive, water-based epoxies, which make a good basecoat. However, they do not include a high-performance urethane topcoat or proper concrete preparation, causing the flooring system to fail prematurely.

Swamp milkweed ( Asclepias incarnata ) is lesser known, but it is an easy species of milkweed to grow. Also known as red or rose milkweed, its native range is mostly in Middle and East Tennessee. It grows natu rally in wet areas yet tolerates a wide range of soils. Unlike the root systems of common milkweed and butterfly weed, swamp milk weed has a fibrous root system and can easily be divided. It is also grown easily from seed. Swamp milkweed can get four feet tall, and its clear pink flowers appear in early July on the Cumberland Plateau (USDA Zone 6b) and earlier for warmer zones. Swamp milkweed is a great plant in the landscape but appreciates extra water in extremely dry periods.
Researchers have found that habitat for the Eastern monarch butterfly can be improved by cutting back perennial milkweeds in early to mid-summer to encourage new young growth that is more attractive to egg-laying adults that are creating the final generation of the late season southern migration. The plants can be cut back to about two to four inches tall just when the plants are begin ning to flower. To provide a floral display, try cutting back only half the patch to create cat erpillar habitat. The University of Tennessee Gardens in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville grow native milkweed species. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public.

T ENNESSEE IS fortunate to have 14 native species of milkweed ( Asclepias sp.). Most are easily grown from seed and can do well in landscape plantings. All are excellent plants for feeding our native pollinator insects. Butterflies, bees, beetles, flies, moths, and a variety of wasp species obtain nectar from milkweedMilkweedsplants.have become synon ymous with the monarch butterfly. Yet, the monarch is one of many insect species that depend on milkweed to complete their life cycle. Other insects use the plants as their sole food source. You will also see them on milkweed, and they should not necessarily be viewed as pests.
Other interesting milkweeds in Tennessee include poke milkweed (Asclepias exaltata), whorled milkweed ( Asclepias verticillata ), clasping milkweed (Asclepias amplexicaulis), and redring milkweed (Asclepias variegata).
Butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa also known as butterfly weed, is the most identifiable milkweed species, featuring orange flowers that open in early June. It is also known as “chiggerweed” because it is often found in pastures and roadsides grow ing with other weeds that people associate with finding chiggers. Yet, butterfly milkweed does not harbor the biting arthropods. This milkweed is one of the smaller, more tidy species you can grow in your garden, stay ing about 24 inches tall. However, it may struggle in overly fertile soils in the home landscape while thriving in a range of poor soils, including heavy clay. Full sun is a must, otherwise the plant stretches to the sun and often flops over. Butterfly weed is best grown from seed in the location you want it to grow and needs to be left alone after planting. Over time, it develops a tap root that is very large and woody, making it nearly impossible to dig up when the plant is mature. Also, the plants are very slow to break dormancy in spring before warm weather arrives, so it is difficult to find it well-grown in pots at early spring plantCommonsales. milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is also often seen in Tennessee pastures and roadsides. This prolific grower can mature up to five feet tall, and its suckering habit will lead to large colonies over time. Common milkweed has pinkish purple, ball-shaped clusters of flowers under its leaves. It is best grown in a wild setting where space is plen tiful, otherwise it can dominate a flower bed and tower over, and shade, smaller peren nials. This species has wonderfully fragrant flowers, reminiscent of the scent of a rose, and pollinators love them, especially monarch butterflies. When the milkweed is in bloom, you can hear the insect activity simply by standing beside the plant. Common milk weed blooms early to mid June, around the time when butterfly weed blooms. This is the milkweed that is often mowed by road crews. It rebounds quickly and provides fresh leaves for late summer monarchs.

I’M MORE EXCITED for fall this year, and I think it’s because summer has been kind of miserable. It was hot and rainy, and the humidity was ridiculous! Whatever the reason, I’m ready for cooler days. September is a busy time in the garden. Our first frost is usually mid-October, but forecasters say it could be as late as early November. You may have a while to get things done, but I suggest not putting it off.
Let’s discuss mums and pollinator plants. I’ll start with mums, which are the ubiqui tous plant of fall. Those little blooming balls you see everywhere are not true mums and may or may not come back if planted. They are hybrids bred for a compact shape and uniform blooming with a bloom time of 4-6 weeks from when the buds open until the blooms die - a time period shortened by heat. There is no such thing as a mum that blooms from August until November! There are early, mid, and late bloomers, so you can continue to pick them up through the season. If you want mums to come back, get them in the ground by mid-September. If you want a perennial mum, the term is Dendanthrumum. Those are much taller and leggier that the hybrid balls but come back reliably year after year. Again, try to get them in the ground by mid-September.

Now let’s talk about pollinator plants.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the dramatic decline in our primary pollinators, which are the bees. There has also been a major decline of our secondary pollinators, which are the butterflies. Why is that a problem? Not only does it throw the balance of nature off, but it also has a negative effect on our diet. More than 30% of the food we con sume relies on a pollinator. Image a world without apples, strawberries, blueberries, and vegetables. How about chocolate? Or coffee? Even if you’re a true carnivore, those cows depend on clover and alfalfa, which are pollinated by bees. Without the pollinators, we would be hungry, malnour ished, and cranky!
So, what can you do?

Once the holiday season begins - Halloween to the New Year - things like “putting your garden to bed” get pushed to the side! Walk around your yard. Look up, down, and all around. Make notes about what did well and what didn’t. Notice any changes in your yard and what impact those may have had. Did your new neighbor clear off land that was wooded? If so, your shade plants might not be shaded. If trees have grown, your sun lovers might not be getting enough sun. Plan for any rearranging that may need to be done. Also think about hardscaping that you’d like to have done and get on the schedule with a reputable company. Many are booked out for months!
☼ Plant pollinator friendly flowers. These are generally sun perennials (native if possible) planted in clusters. This will attract more pollinators than individual plants. Choosing a variety with overlap ping bloom times will keep them around your yard. Plant host plants for egg lay ing and caterpillar feeding. Our butterfly weed is a good example of this (see UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month on the fac ing page), as it’s the only plant the now endangered monarch will use for egg laying. ☼ Provide nest sites. Ground bees make up most of the bee population and need access to bare earth. It’s helpful to leave dead wood, hollow stems, and brush piles for cavity nesters. If leaves aren’t infected with fungus, consider leaving them for the newly mated bumble bee queens, who hibernate under leaf litter or at the base of grass clumps. A shallow basin of water with pebbles for resting will help many pollinators. Protect them from chemicals. Use as few chemicals as possible and use them wisely. Start with insecticidal soap, use when the pollinators are not active, and only move up to stronger products if necessary. It’s also critical to know what you’re treating. Often we have custom ers who have been treating laurels with an insecticide, when the issue is actually shot-hole disease. Or they have been spraying worms with an insecticide, which has no effect on them. A little research and education go a long way!

Artist statement excerpts: I rely on shapes and colors that are dreamlike yet recognizable. Using swirls, marks, and blocks of vivid color, I create a setting that allows my subjects to be interpreted differently by each observer. My goal is to create works that are visually striking, inviting, and filled with intrigue.
Artist statement excerpts: The pandemic year was extraordinary in its spectrum of ruptures: The human spirit struggled under the weight of death and burgeoning cultural and systemic fractures. During the disruption and isolation of the year, I found good use for the magazines that had long piled up. My work is both deconstructive and reconstructive - here, of torn society. I have used cut and torn images from those accumulated magazines in collage, gleaning slivers of culture and halted experience, borrowing color, content and shape, sometimes including direct art historical references, to create pilings of redesigned matter, things stacking up, collaborations of opposites, painting sturdiness in the face of great constraint. I paint arrangements of those fragments, creating lively, precarious balances of chaos and order, unifying fragility and stability.

Risa Hricovsky is a post-discipline/installation artist. She creates punctuate space through pattern, color, and her use of the multiple. The work juxtaposes similarly colored materials with opposing properties, such as fired porcelain with soft sculpture or paper.
Greg Lach learned that all artists should be photographers, and all photographers should be artists - an outlook reflected in his current work. He now lives in Seymour, TN, where he works on pixel painting watercolor, acrylic portraits, still life, landscapes and Dollywood paintings, and commissioned works.

The series Strange Stranger is a collection of sculptures made with different materials with varying degrees of likeness. They all have a familiarity that draws the viewer in but simultaneously reject identification as knowable objects. This ambiguity creates tension within the viewer, who wants the object to be recognizable yet can enjoy the sculpture on a formal and aesthetic level.
Artist statement excerpt: With the coming of the Digital Age, I embraced digital photography and pixel painting. This combination of traditional watercolor brush strokes and digital manipulation produces a one-of-a-kind image. Where does the brush stroke and photograph begin or end?

Images from global and local environments, including pre-pandemic and pandemic times, as well as solo photographic works and images they created during joint photo shoots. They have collaborated and supported one another’s photographic pursuits for more than a decade. Excerpts from Tom’s statement:artist A still photograph puts a frame around a moment frozen in time. It sits still and allows and perhaps commands the viewer to look at something real. I’m looking for that moment. My still photography is influenced by a diversity of photographers, including Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Adams, Minor White, and Diane Arbus. Excerpts from Marianne’s artist statement: I believe in the magical qualities of photography. Technical knowledge and skills support the creation of lovely, interesting, and whimsical images. I look for ways to combine colors, lights, shapes, and textures to evoke a viewer’s mood or emotion. It is in nature that I find many of my favorite subjects.

The neighborhood has meandering street lines with roomy houses on spacious, tree-lined lots. Knox Heritage’s mission is to protect Knoxville’s unique character for future generations by preserving, restoring, and transforming histori cally significant structures and places.
A group of Knoxville businessmen, who wanted Knoxville to have a top-caliber golf course, formed a corporation called Holston Hills, Inc. in 1926 and purchased the McDonald farm along the Holston River. The corporation began construction on the club house and established a membership program with an annual fee of $1,000, which also included a free home site! The clubhouse was designed by local architects Barber & McMurry in 1927 and the golf course was designed and laid out in 1928 by famous golf course designer Donald RossThe(1872-1948).clubhouse is perched on a hill overlooking the golf course and features alternating bay windows with tall, ele gant, arched doors and a central ballroom with a large cathedral ceiling and exposed wood trusses. Also noteworthy is the main exterior entrance with its porte-cochere and double stairway that leads into the main lobby. The 18-hole Donald Ross designed golf course sits on 180 acres of rolling hills with beautiful views of the Holston River. Designed and opened in 1928, the course has changed very little from its original design. Today, the course rates in the top 100 historic golf courses in the United States and was rated the 6th best golf course in Tennessee by Golf Digest in 2021. When the course was designed, Ross was one of the most famous golf course architects in the world. Ross did not have the modern means to design a golf course like designers today; he did not have golf carts, aerial photography, or heavy equipment. Ross would walk his layouts and would manually stake out the basic design. His main tools and resources included manual labor, mules, picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows. Many large homes within the neighborhood were built during the 1920s, but following the stock market crash of 1929, smaller cottage-style homes with stone and brick details were constructed. World War II stopped further housing development, but in the post-war housing boom, several ranch-style homes were built around the original neighborhood development. Holston Hills was included in a major annexation into the city of Knoxville in 1962. It was Knoxville’s first eastward annexation since 1917. Established in 1956, Holston Hills is a popular Dogwood Arts trail. In recent years, many specimens of trees have been added by the Garden Club of Holston Hills, and the neighborhood fea tures many beautifully designed gardens. Holston Hills has always been a community of successful middle-class professionals: doc tors, lawyers, educators, businessmen, and civic leaders. One of its most famous residents was John J. Duncan Sr. (1919-1988), former Mayor of Knoxville and a U.S. House of Representative from the Tennessee 2nd Congressional District.

P LEIN AIR in the Smokies will bring 20 nationally-acclaimed artists to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, September 25-October 2. Artists will paint outdoors, “en plein air,” throughout the national park to capture the beauty and magic of the Smokies. Artists will be painting outdoors in various areas of the national park. The art competition and public sale benefits Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Plein Air painting, in its strictest sense, is the practice of painting landscape pic tures outdoors. The purpose is to create intense impression of the open air (French: “en plein air”) in a landscape painting. En plein air painting was essential for the Impressionist Movement to take place. Impressionism is the painting of what the artist interprets as taking place at a certain place at a certain time. It is the chang ing of the shadows, the shimmering of the water, and the movement of people. Impressionists start and finish their paint ings outdoors to be able to depict what they would later be so famous for - captur ing their impression of life. In-park painting demonstrations will take place September 26-30. A “Quick Draw” competition will be held Saturday morning in downtown Maryville and is open to all artists. The weeks concludes at Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville, with judg ing, a gala, and private art sale on Saturday evening, October 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, followed by a public sale on October 2. Tickets to the Reception & Private Art Sale are available and your ticket can be applied toward the purchase of one paint ing at the Reception & Private Art Sale. Proceeds from the event will help fund several projects and programs that support the park’s efforts to preserve the historic and natural resources of the Smokies while providing a safe, enjoyable experience to more than 14 million annual visitors. B ECAUSE I’M a former university professor, the beginning of the school year always feels like the start of the year. For me, fall feels full of potential and possibilities for things to begin, grow, and develop. Sometimes the greatest obstacles to turning opportunities into realities are things we carry in ourselves - doubts, reservations, fears, and false-truths that hold us back. How can you take advantage of life’s possibilities?

Act on what you know. Many people fret about what might happen, then make con tingency plans for every possibility. Instead, take action based on what you do know.
A lengthy process of therapy, self-help, or re-education might help, but here are some ideas that might offer a quicker path to max imizing your opportunities.
Let go of what you don’t love. My wife sometimes has a spring garage sale where she takes the clothes, furniture, knick-knacks, and stuff we held onto but never used and makes them available to people who might actually need and use them. The goal is to unload stuff and simplify. Coming to grips with what you don’t love in-and-about your life is valuable - it forces us to focus. We waste time and energy feeling guilty about things for which we aren’t truly passionate when it’s much healthier to simply give them away or stop doing them, then focus our energy where it counts. Live like an artist. Everyone needs a creative outlet, though they may need to redefine what it means for them to be cre ative. Develop and create hobbies, art, and life practices that restore you because you love them - not for a paycheck, being respon sible, approved, or promoted. Enlarge your life. Keep your income and your identity sepa rate in your thinking. Don’t complicate life by putting these two together. Who you are and how you choose to earn a living must not be dependent on each other. If you’re fortunate, they may overlap or merge, but it’s always healthier to understand that your vocation is a place where you apply who you are, rather than the thing that defines who you are.
“Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” - John Wooden. Start creating and offering your gifts, strengths, abilities, and resources as you can. Don’t wait for someone to ask, endorse, or “anoint” you or do it for an audience, a paycheck, a posi tion, or a title. Do what you can. Don’t wait for things to be “ideal.” Don’t wait on the big transition or life change to start something new. Don’t wait for a job or position offer, endorsements, a raise in pay or greater savings, an inheritance, or “the right people to appear” to begin walking toward your heart’s desires. So many peo ple miss valuable opportunities waiting for “perfect” or “sensible” situations when those things rarely (if ever) happen to most of us. We can not become better people without more knowledge, more experiences, taking risks, failing-then-trying-again, getting mentored or coached. In human development, there are only the choices of growing or dying. The notion of attaining a high level of com petence, insight, and wisdom, then forever staying there with no effort, is a myth. A risk-averse life leads only to a small life. You will never fully become who you were meant to be without pressing through adversityYodawas flat wrong when he said, “Simply do or do not, there is no try.” Sometimes trying wholeheart edly is the most important thing you can do in life. If the things you want meet your moral and ethical standards and they don’t adversely affect how you perform your responsibilities (as spouse, parent, employee, etc.), then go after them. Even if things go differently than you
Attaining your life goals often requires turn ing a blind eye or deaf ear to things that could-be-but-may-not occur. We’re all lim ited in what we can accurately anticipate, so it’s better to act on the clarity we have, trust ing that more clarity will come as we work through the process.
There are differences between “waiting on God” and procrastinating, and between mov ing forward in faith and acting rashly, but we were all created to move forward and make things happen. Understand the differences, choose to live authentically, and take hold of
