The matching pant suit is another ’70s trend that’s “new” once again. Glamorous and sophisticated, this look has always been one that makes a statement!

It’s no surprise that we’ve already been reordering fall styles at The Lily Pad! It’s without a doubt the most fabulous collection we’ve had to choose from for many seasons - the styles are so diverse, which is perfect for our diverse clientele!

Whether this is the first time you’ve worn the “new again” styles or you sported them the first time they were in style, we would love for you to visit the store and see all of what’s new for this season.

TRY TAILGATING IN YOUR GARAGE

BY CARRIE MCCONKEY, CARRIEMCCONKEY.COM

IT’S FOOTBALL TIME in Tennessee! Fall in East Tennessee brings crisp air, changing leaves, and the long-awaited football season. The game schedule has been set, and it’s time to start gathering your tailgating supplies. Before you pack up the car, however, try tailgating from the comfort of home. It’s easy when you’ve made your garage game day ready!

Bring on the Food

Forget the folding tables, and ditch the cumbersome coolers. Instead, install convenient countertops to hold your football feast and a mini-fridge or Kegerator for your touchdown toasts. Power strips will keep the chili-filled crock pots hot, and cleanup is easy with a pull-out trash bin that keeps your garage looking and smelling fresh.

Shelter in Place

Don’t bother untangling tent poles - your garage is ready to provide instant shelter and shade. No Porta Potties here… restrooms are just steps away. Hide your household supplies behind powder-coated cabinets (in your team’s colors, of course), and use overhead storage to lift bulky items up and out of the way. Provide foldable chairs for your special guests - easily retrieved from built-in custom cabinets.

Have Spirited Fun

Create an alumni inspired atmosphere with a school colored epoxy polyaspartic floor, or choose a checkerboard style with Swisstrax floor tiles. On blue-sky days, your driveway can serve as ground zero for cornhole games and grilling. Use slatwall to hang sports-themed art, posters, jerseys, or autographed photos (try visiting local antique stores for great memorabilia), and install LED lights to illuminate the area during night games.

Don’t worry about transporting food, supplies, tents, and tables at your next football gathering - everything you need to have a comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable VFL experience can be found right at home. With designer cabinetry and countertops, durable flooring, overhead storage, slatwall, and custom lighting, your garage will become the perfect football destination. Call the experts at Designer Garages for a free, no-obligation consultation, and visit their West Knoxville showroom to make a game plan for your own garage today!

JASON SCHEFF

LEADER • LEGACY • MENTOR

BY RANDY PATTERSON, BOOMEROCITY.COM

JASON SCHEFF. SON of Jerry Scheff, legendary bassist for Elvis, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Chris Hillman, and so many others.

At age 23, young Jason joined Chicago, replacing Peter Cetera.

Chicago. At age 23. Wow.

Jason held that position for 31 years until his departure from the legendary band in 2016. It’s Jason’s voice that we hear on the band’s 1986 remake of their 1970 hit single “25 or 6 to 4” and “Will You Still Love Me.”

After his departure, Jason joined Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Denny Laine (of Wings fame), and Badfinger’s Joey Molland for a tour of “It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles White Album.”

He has also donated a significant amount of time performing for charities. It was at one such event that I first met Jason, as well as his son. Backstage at a 2019 Nashville fundraiser hosted by Jason’s dad’s former bandmate: the legendary James Burton, we had a brief conversation and parted ways agreeing that an interview was in order.

Fast forward to today.

With Rascal Flatts’ bassist, Jay DeMarcus, Jason has formed the super group Generation Radio with Journey drummer, Deen Castronovo, and guitarists Chris Rodriguez and Tom Yankton. The band’s sound brings to mind Chicago, Eagles, and, yes, Rascal Flatts, as well as Journey. It is this unique sound that will make Generation Radio THE new band to seek out in 2022-2023 and beyond.

The new band’s self-titled debut album landed last month, giving Jason and me the perfect excuse to set up an interview. Before chatting about Generation Radio and the new album, I brought up Jason’s legendary father.

“I’m going to be able to get to hang out with my dad for a good three weeks when he comes out here for Elvis Week along with my other brothers and one of my sons will be there. My father is just amazing.”

The subject shifted to Generation Radio, and Jason shared the backstory to its creation.

“Well, going back to the very beginning, Jay DeMarcus played the Washington State Fair in 2002 with Rascal Flatts two days before Chicago. The lady who runs the event, who I’ve gotten to know over the years, said, ‘Jason, do you know who Rascal Flatts is?’ and I said no, that I was really not into country. She said, ‘Well, they’re big fans of you guys, and they’re so excited that they sold the grandstand out and knew you were going to be here a couple of nights later. Jay wanted me to give this to you.’

“She gave me their CD with a letter. I thought I was going to open the letter and it would say ‘Dear Chicago,’ but it said ‘Dear Jason, I’m a bass player in a band called Rascal Flatts. I’m a huge fan of Chicago. That’s what made me want to play music. And I’m a big fan of yours. I’ve followed your years with the band.’

“That was the moment for me where I realized wow, this is my legacy now. I grew up on Chicago in the ’70s. When I joined the band in ’85, I thought - along with a lot of other people - this is probably not going to work. I mean, come on, this kid is just not on this level. But something happened on the way to the office that I felt comfortable going in the studio with David Foster, and the rest is history.”

From that humbling letter with the Rascal Flatts CD, a close friendship began.

When Rascal Flatts decided to take a sabbatical just before the pandemic hit, Jason and Jay started laying the groundwork for Generation Radio. With friendships with Journey’s Deen Castronovo, as well as Tom Yankton and Chris Rodriquez, everything began to gel.

Jason remembered, “The whole concept Jay always had was ‘Let’s put a band together with the talent levels of like an Eagles, where everybody sings strong, everybody writes.’ And that’s what we did.”

When asked if there were any surprises as the band and its new album came together, Jason replied, “I was not surprised because of the talent that we’re bringing to the table. Because you’re kind of going, ‘You shouldn’t be surprised that it turned out like it did.’ But when you actually hear it - Surprise, Surprise, Sergeant Carter. It’s like, wow! We knew from the first notes we played in the studio, and it was just coming back, feeling so great.”

You can watch the interview with Jason Scheff, where he talks about his friendship with Doors guitarist, Robbie Krieger, Generation Radio’s album sound being a throwback to a “kinder, gentler time,” and his conversations with current Journey lead singer, Arnel Pineda, on Boomerocity.com. You can also check out more info on the band at their website, GenerationRadio.net, and JasonScheff.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Why Having a Long-Term Care Plan is a Must

BY TRAVIS CULLMAN, CFP ®, CPFA

70% OF PEOPLE over age 65 will need some form of long-term care services during their lives!1 Yet only 7% of Americans have purchased long-term care insurance!2

While none of us like to discuss the reality of aging, the data is clear - you may not necessarily need an insurance policy, but having a long-term care plan is essential. Whether it’s additional investments, home equity, or an insurance policy, odds are you or someone close to you will pay significant long-term care costs during their lifetime. Consider that here in Knoxville, the cost for an assisted living facility is upwards of $3,900/month! And for anyone who goes into a private room at a facility, they can expect to pay more than $7,500 per month.3

I’ve seen with my own eyes the sad reality of the financial and emotional cost. With women generally living several years longer than their husbands, it is not uncommon to see the husband go into a nursing home, drain the family savings, and leave the surviving spouse destitute and dependent upon government assistance.

As my mentor used to remind me, “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail.” If we don’t proactively address this risk, you may be jeopardizing your dreams of leaving a legacy to your loved ones. Even worse, you may force your adult children to choose between paying for your care and saving for their own retirement!

If you don’t have a care plan, are worried about your parents’ longevity strategy, or simply want additional information, please give us a call. A long-term care plan might be easier than you think!

TIPS FOR ENJOYING THE GREAT Outdoors

COURTESY FFE

WITH temperatures cooling (fingers crossed!) and the upcoming change in season, now is the time to enjoy the beauty in and around Knoxville. As summer transitions into fall, sunny days offer opportunities to get back out in nature to take in the changing leaves, cool breezes, and many outdoor activities East Tennessee has to offer. Whether you and your crew are into biking, hiking, kayaking, or simply picnicking, you’ll need to take a few steps to enhance the experience and ensure you’re ready for whatever the day may bring.

When it’s time to head outside, consider these tips from the experts at CURAD® to protect your body (and skin) from the elements:

Protect Skin from UV Rays

Any time you’ll be outdoors for more than 15 minutes, you should wear protective sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even if it’s partly cloudy or overcast. One mistake many people make is applying sunscreen before they leave the house then not reapplying throughout the day. To help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.

Also be sure to cover all exposed areas, including often overlooked spots like the tops of your ears, neck, and tops of your feet, if they’re exposed by sandals or other open shoes. Stay Hydrated

One of the most important ways to protect your health when you’re spending the day outdoors is staying hydrated, especially on warm days when you’re more prone to losing your body’s water reserves to sweat. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day can help replenish what you lose so you don’t get dehydrated, and you’ll also have an easier time regulating your body’s temperature.

These eye-catching CURAD® bandages designed by Kendra Dandy add a splash of fun, color, and flair while you heal.

Be Prepared for Cuts and Scrapes

Even for short day trips, it is always wise to bring along a first aid kit with some essentials: cleaning wipes, antiseptic spray or cream, and bandages in a variety of sizes. An option like CURAD® Adhesive Bandages with a four-sided seal that keeps dirt and germs out and a nonstick pad that’s extra absorbent and made with a comfortable, stretchy material that conforms to your body for maximum protection that can aid in healing. Repel Bugs

Aggressive insects can put a damper on outdoor fun. Bug spray or roll-on products should go on top of your sunscreen but never under your clothes. Apply a sparing coat to all exposed skin and clothing, paying special attention to your waistband, pant and sleeve cuffs, collar, and socks. Rather than applying spray directly to your face, spray the palms of your hands then rub the repellant onto your face. Be sure to wash your hands afterward to avoid accidentally transferring spray to your mouth or eyes.

If you have sensitive skin or prefer not to use spray or roll-on for other reasons, products like repellant fans or wearable repellant bracelets may be good alternatives. Some essential oils are also natural bug repellants. Don’t Forget Your Lips

While faces, necks, arms, and legs are often top of mind to protect from the sun’s rays, lips can be easy to forget. However, using a lip balm that is rich in oils, beeswax, and petroleum can help seal in moisture. Similar to sunscreen, lip balms featuring SPF should be reapplied every two hours when outdoors and often offer added moisturizing benefits.

Wear Layered Clothing

When it’s hot outside and you’re engaged in physical activity, you’re at a greater risk of overheating. Dressing for the climate, while also protecting yourself from the elements, should be a top priority. If the temperature will vary throughout the day, consider layering so you can warm up or cool down as needed. Lighter clothes that don’t add weight are a good idea, and it’s important to be conscious of the fit. Ideally, clothes should be loose enough to allow for easy, comfortable movement but not so baggy they get in the way or pose a snagging or tripping hazard. Don’t forget accessories like a hat and sunglasses, which can protect your head and eyes.

Support Areas Prone to Injuries

Twisted ankles are one of the more common injuries, especially for hikers or runners who may stumble over rocks or curbs and even weekend warriors playing pick-up basketball or softball games. Keeping an ankle support on-hand can help stabilize a sprain or provide extra support during recovery. If you do experience a mild injury, it’s important to choose a high-quality product, like CURAD® Performance Series IRONMAN ankle supports and braces. With options available to support both mild and moderate ankle injuries, they offer a rugged yet comfortable design to wear on the field, in the gym, at work, or out on the town.

FOR THE past several years, homeowners have been investing in garage floor coatings - and the trend continues to grow. A recent industry report showed that consumer demand for garage flooring has increased almost 20% during the past two years.

Since a garage floor takes more daily abuse than any other floor in the home, it should be beautiful yet tough enough to handle hot tires from cars, trucks, and motorcycles. However, all garage floor coatings are definitely not created equal. Most large home improvement stores sell DIY epoxy garage floor kits. These kits often consist of relatively inexpensive, water-based epoxies, which make a good basecoat. However, they do not include a high-performance urethane topcoat or proper concrete preparation, causing the flooring system to fail prematurely.

PremierGarage of Knoxville, the area’s flooring experts, says your garage floor coating should include these important industry practices:

Grind Preparation, Not Acid Wash

A significant factor in the longevity of a concrete coating is the preparation of the floor. It requires a surface texture that promotes a strong bond between the epoxy and the floor surface. Grinding creates the correct surface texture for the base coat to adhere to the concrete. Some companies try the less-expensive method of acid wash floors, but that does not create a good bond, resulting in a much higher probability of floor failure due to a lower bond strength.

Full Flake Coverage, Not Partial

The amount of flake broadcast into the epoxy not only has a decorative purpose, but it also has a functional purpose. Decorative flakes actually make the epoxy layer thicker and act as an additional bonding agent. Since the flakes are more flexible, they can help prevent chipping when objects are dropped onto it. Saturating the base coat with the flakes makes it up to three times thicker than if someone “sprinkled” flakes onto a solid epoxy color.

Commercial-Grade Top Coat

Using a high-quality, commercial-grade polyurethane topcoat is vital so the floor stands up to hot tires and dropped tools for many years. Polyurethane provides chemical, slip, UV, and scratch resistance, as well as gloss retention. It also reduces allergens by resisting the growth of microorganisms. The non-porous coating cures to twice as hard as traditional epoxies, making the garage floor resistant to gasoline, auto fluids, paint thinner, pesticides, and other household chemicals that can destroy inferior epoxy finishes.

Call PremierGarage of Knoxville to help you create a long-lasting garage floor. Then add custom garage cabinets and other storage solutions to turn your garage into your favorite spot in the home.
