eclipse of the century, for those of us in East Tennessee, has ushered in one of my favorite seasons of the year, autumn. The Smoky Mountains are especially striking during this season, which is why visitors travel to our area to enjoy our special corner of Tennessee. Fall also ushers in a variety of county festivals for the entire family to enjoy, as well as East Tennessee’s favorite pastime, football. September begins with the Labor Day weekend signaling symbolically the end of summer. Labor Day is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they make

to the strength and prosperity of our country. In this edition of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to introduce Keri McFarlane, MD, a mom, entrepreneur, and founder of Northshore Urgent Care. When the unexpected occurs, whether fever or flu symptoms, stroke, heart attack, allergic reactions, animal bites, severe burns, cuts/lacerations, or broken bones, you or your loved one will need immediate treatment. Until now, patients typically sought medical care at their hospital’s emergency room. Today, however, as a result of the latest innovation in the healthcare industry, patients have an alternative that provides the same high level of care that they would receive in an emergency room but with

shorter wait times and at a fraction of the cost. Northshore Urgent Care, founded by Keri McFarlane, MD, is a family owned clinic offering urgent medical care without an appointment. Functioning much like a mini emergency room, Northshore Urgent Care can treat fevers, flu symptoms, allergic reactions, animal bites, broken bones, and an entire host of other urgent, non-emergency conditions. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to bring you this interview with doctor, entrepreneur, and mother, Dr. Keri McFarlane. EK: Dr. McFarlane, tell our readers a little bit about your training and experience.

Dr. McFarlane: Since I was eight years old, I have known that all I wanted to be was a doctor. I went to medical school at East Carolina University and from there completed my residency in Family Practice at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. I was in private practice for a couple of years and then had the opportunity to do a trauma fellowship at Bayfront. I have been doing emergency medicine since 2004 in a multitude of ERs. EK: How did your experience as an emergency room physician lead to the launching of Northshore Urgent Care? Dr. McFarlane: It has always been a dream of mine to own my own clinic, and my experience in the ER, where I was exposed

to a wider variety of medical emergencies than one might expect to experience in a typical private practice, has contributed greatly to my ability to treat my patients. I envisioned a treatment center where you could receive great care that was both fast and convenient – a place where you were treated as an individual and where you could get in and out without the long wait times often experienced at hospital ERs. Throughout the years, as medicine has changed, I have felt that we have lost that personal touch that we called the art of medicine. Today a growing number of physicians have left private practice to join large healthcare corporations. While that has freed them up from the enormous administrative burdens associated with private practice, it has come at a cost. Physicians are told how many patients they must see in a day and how long they can spend with each individual. Because my team and I are committed to the goal of providing patient-centered and compassionate care at a level that you might have thought no longer existed, I created Northshore Urgent Care. EK: How has being a mom helped you provide a higher level of compassionate care for your patients? Dr. McFarlane: Being a mom has taught me to really listen – listen to every patient, and don’t always go by disease process or the book. Sometimes it is not as easy as black and white. My kids may look like each other, but they are very different. Each patient, while they may have the same symptoms, is very different, and your care has to be individualized. So I listen to all of their concerns and answer all of their questions. I take everything into

consideration to provide the best quality of care. And, most importantly, being a mom has taught me a lot more about patience. My kids have also played another important role in my practice, as they helped me design the children’s waiting room. I am sure that you will be able to discern their influence when you visit our clinic. They contributed some great ideas. EK: How would you differentiate between a typical emergency room and your urgent care clinic? Dr. McFarlane: We are able to provide much of the same care that you get in the emergency room but without the wait. We have x-ray on-site and can splint you and refer you if needed. We have the capability of giving IV fluids and IV antibiotics. We have on-site lab testing and can provide most labs/

tests in as little as 10 minutes. EK: At Northshore Urgent Care, all patients are seen by a board certified MD. How is that different from other urgent care clinics? Dr. McFarlane: Some other clinics may have a MD on-site or available, but most times you are still seen by a FNP or PA. At Northshore Urgent Care, you will always be seen by a MD. EK: You have been successful in significantly reducing patient wait times, but you have also helped your uninsured patients reduce their out-of-pocket expenses. Explain. Dr. McFarlane: Because medical care has become so expensive throughout the years, our prices are significantly lower in general. For our uninsured patients, we offer a sliding care for visits, x-rays, and procedures. We are also able to provide most antibiotics and non-controlled medications at a fraction of the cost of most pharmacies. EK: You refer to Northshore Urgent Care as a mini emergency room. What else would you like our readers to know? Dr. McFarlane: We are your mini ER in your backyard. We also are able to be your local neighborhood doctor and would love to have the opportunity to do so. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Dr. McFarlane: Most patients come in needing urgent care but end up switching to us for primary care because they have such a great experience at our clinic. Whether it is confidence in sinking that next putt on the golf course, or walking into a room of strangers and spotting a friend, or even knowing you look good in a new outfit, when Yvonne Marsh, we have confidence, we feel good. CFP®, CPA How about having confidence in your impending retirement? Or confidence in knowing what you would do if your beloved spouse was incapacitated or died suddenly? Answer these questions to see if you have the right financial professional by your side to help you through life’s uncertainties: 1. Do they educate you? They should be providing you with the pros and cons of their recommendations. No investment strategy is bullet proof, and even if you aren’t interested in understanding the difference between “beta” and a “Sharpe ratio” when choosing a mutual fund, you should still have some broad understanding of their recommendations and how they fit for you. 2. Do you understand how they are being paid? New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on September 1

Linde Mills & Mary Smith: Art in Motion in the Lower Gallery Linde works with various materials and primarily acrylic on canvas. “Many of us take great pleasure in watching people in motion; from sports to dance, the ease with which some can make the power in their bodies explode into motion is captivating,” said Linde. Her subject matter almost always involves this type of activity, typically in a dance fashion or involving water. Mary began painting in 2015 as a form of therapy after the loss of her husband. She developed a passion for abstract painting and the freedom of expression it offers. Each piece she paints brings comfort. Her acrylic paintings are often spontaneous and the result of “wherever the brush takes her hand.” Painting and talking with others about her work provides Mary pleasure, joy, and solace. “ David Gildersleeve… And Now for Something Completely Different in the Balcony Gallery David paints subjects that invade his subconscious, using a wonky style to help bring these images to life. Using textures and a selective palette, he creates an unmistakable style in his work that most people refer to as “whimsical.” He displays his art in several galleries up and down the east coast and takes part in several shows a year that focus 22

I burnish and pit-fire my work so the smoke ages and mutes the colors with a patina that has a haunting suggestion of lost and forgotten eras. I refer to my work as ‘modern artifacts.’ This oxymoron reflects my contradictory intent of modern elegance achieved with primitive methods and various surface enrichments that connect the past to the present.”

Anthony M. Donaldson Anthony M. Donaldson: Time (Past, Present & Future) in the Atrium Anthony is a local painter who lives in Knoxville and is a KAT bus driver. He studied art heavily in high school and continued taking some classes in college. As a writer expresses in a book, an artist expresses in art. “I ask myself: Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?” he said. “I think sometimes it’s both. For me, God is the master artist, and He created everything. I find drawing easy, yet creativity requires deep thinking and studying.” Anthony aims to tell a story with his art, and the recent work he will display features many subjects such as climate change, human trafficking, Harlem Renaissance culture, and more. A Passion for Woodworking Takes Flight BY VICKIE SAL ADIN, OWNER OF GALLERY ON MAIN

OHN JOHNSON was born and raised in

Oregon. He joined the Navy after high school during the Vietnam War and was sent to the Philippines for shore duty as a radioman. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1968, John returned to Oregon to attend Southern Oregon College, majoring in Law Enforcement. While attending college, he became a reserve deputy sheriff and was eventually an Oregon State Trooper. After a short career of nine years in law enforcement, John obtained his private pilot license, deciding instead to pursue a career in commercial aviation to fly for a living. John attended flight school and became a commercial airplane and helicopter pilot, where he met his future wife, Kathy.

John accepted a position flying a traffic helicopter in Chicago before moving to Kentucky for a year, where he and Kathy married. For the next 20 years, John was employed as a corporate airplane and helicopter pilot in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and then relocated to Florida, where he was employed by a worldwide flight training organization giving recurrent training to professional helicopter pilots. During this time, John and his wife bought some vacation property in East Tennessee because they missed the mountains. John and Kathy are building their dream home between Madisonville and Tellico Plains, where they plan to enjoy their retirement years. John has always had a passion for woodworking and creating wooden military and civilian plaques, inspirational and custom signs, and a variety of other products hand-crafted from wood. Kathy designs the signs that John creates, and they display and sell them at craft shows, along with a large variety of military plaques and signs. Marble Springs State Historic Site is the last remaining home of John Sevier. Born in Virginia in 1745, John Sevier made a name for himself as a Revolutionary War Hero during the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780), a key player and governor of the shortlived State of Franklin (1784-1788), and ultimately was elected to serve as the first Governor of the State of Tennessee (1796). Marble Springs was the approximate 350acre farm that Sevier lived on from 18011815, the last years of his life. Sevier

named his farm Marble Springs because of the Tennessee Rose Marble that was quarried on site and the natural springs that flowed on the property. While visiting Marble Springs, you will have the opportunity to tour several historic structures that are designed to represent various aspects of John Sevier’s life and times. These structures include the Tavern, Loom House, Smoke House, Spring House, and the John Sevier Cabin and detached kitchen.

musical legends, and the legends don’t get a whole lot bigger than Graham Nash. Knoxville will be welcoming Nash to the historic Bijou Theatre on September 17th. It is because of that upcoming show that I had the privilege of chatting with the two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame about the show and what fans can expect. As with past solo tours, Nash is touring with his long-time guitarist, Shane Fontayne. I asked how long they have known each other and worked together. “Well, Crosby and I sang on a couple of tracks on a couple of albums of Mark’s, and one day, at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, he was playing, and he wanted me and Crosby to come and sing a couple of songs. So we did. His lead guitar player was Shane Fontayne. “Now, with a name like Shane Fontayne, I thought he was from Alabama or something, but he’s actually English. At that time, Crosby and I were two weeks away from going on tour in Europe and our lead guitar player, Dean Parks – who was a very important session man – didn’t want to lose his place in the queue for the first call for musicians, you know? And so he couldn’t go. We asked Shane, and Shane learned 32 songs in three days and became our lead guitar player with Crosby, Nash, and then he was the guitar player in Crosby, Stills, and Nash with the other lead guitar player being, of course, Stephen Stills. No pressure there, of course. Then, for the last couple of years, it’s been me and Shane stripping the songs down to their very essence as to how they were created – a simple way, with a guitar or a piano. People are responding brilliantly to it.” Nash’s latest album is entitled This Path Tonight. It’s a magnificent body of work, with any one song on it making it worth the price of the entire album. I asked what the response to it has been – both as an album and the songs performed at shows. “When me and David, or when me and David and Stephen, or when me and David and Stephen and Neil do great work and people respond – let’s say, to Teach Your Children, a 28

song written 45 years ago – it’s been in their hearts and souls for years. They love the song, right? But when you can get them to their feet, applauding, with a song they’ve only heard once, that’s impressive to me!” Does there seem to be a crowd favorite from the album? “Actually, that one,” said Nash. “Yeah. And actually, Encore. People really love that song for some reason.”

With more than 50 years of performances under his belt, does Nash see a difference in the crowds between then and now? “We’ve always had great crowds,” he said. “But what I’ve been noticing lately is this beautiful thing where parents and brothers and sisters (older brothers and sisters) are passing on the music to the younger generation. So I see 70-year-old people at our concerts, and I see 15-year-old people at our concerts. The truth is, we’re not Brad Pitt, you know what I’m saying? It must be the music, and that’s what’s thrilling to me as a musician.” Artists such as Nash, whose career has spanned generations, often lament the digitization of recording music today. I asked if he missed how music used to be recorded. “I don’t miss much, because it’s still the

We’ve Never Needed Courage Like We Do Today

AN WE TEACH COURAGE?

Can we help our children develop moral courage, the courage to stand up in the face of adversity, staying true to both themselves and the things that they hold dear and true? As we look around, it’s easy to see that our society is struggling to not only identify moral conviction, but to also identify when and the best way to stand up and be a voice for good, a voice against oppression of the weak, and a voice of strength for all that is right. I believe that we absolutely can teach moral courage to our children who will need it to be engraved upon their hearts and minds in order to leave this world better than they found it. We start, like with all things, when they are very young. We start by helping our children to notice injustices, those in need, and those who need an advocate. It’s more than just noticing; it’s realizing that we as individuals have enormous power to cause change. Unless we believe that one can make a difference, then

we might shrink at the opportunity to do so. A great way to start is to continually read about and discuss others from the past who have done just that. There are so many books to read to our children, but why not be more purposeful in the books that we choose, starting when they are very young? Look for books about common people who have demonstrated great courage, moral conviction, and impeccable character and because of these qualities have made a huge difference in individual lives. We never want to underestimate the importance of the single individual. Another wonderful thing we can do to teach courage to our children is to help them overcome things they are afraid of. Teaching our children to do hard things is imperative to their success. Such things might be going over to another child on the playground and introducing themselves and inviting them to play, role playing with our children what to do when they see another child being teased or bullied so they’re prepared to defend those who need defending, teaching our children to

speak for themselves at a very early age by refraining from speaking for our children, and many other things. Finally, it’s important to help our children identify their own strengths, talents, and abilities that God has given them. As they identify their unique abilities, as parents, it’s our duty to help them understand that the reason God has blessed each of us with these talents is to bless the lives of God’s other children. When our children better comprehend that they have the power to do great good on this earth, it unlocks the doors of compassion, service, and advocacy. Courage is to act, even when we are afraid, but it takes practice. Start today.

CFP®, CPA Q: My sister, who was 75, just passed away after a brief illness and named me and my other sister as 50% beneficiaries on her $450,000 IRA. Can I take my portion and use it to finish paying off my house? A: Every dollar withdrawn from an IRA is taxable, so if you withdraw the entire amount, you’ll give Uncle Sam about one-third of your inheritance. Since you’re a named beneficiary, you can “stretch” your withdrawals over your lifetime, greatly reducing the tax bill. If you really want to pay off your house, you could consider a five-year payout and stretch the tax bill over that period. Q: I am 65 years old, married, and want to retire next year. I’m trying to decide if I should take my Social Security next year or wait until I’m 70 and live on my investments until then. How do I decide? A: The time between retirement and age 70 is the sweet spot for retirement tax planning. One strategy is to delay SS until age 70 (thus growing 8%/year) and live on your 401(k) dollars. This assumes you’ll be in a lower tax bracket before age 70. Because there are several factors to weigh, this is a part of retirement planning that needs professional guidance. Q: My husband has always been the financial person in our house. He has recently been diagnosed with a form of dementia, and I don’t know what to do next. A: The first step is to get your finances organized using an online tool like Everplans or a hard copy binder. You’ll know what assets and insurance you have and can make a plan to pay for his care. You’ll also need a financial power of attorney that allows you to manage his financial affairs. And, just as importantly, make sure you have a plan for yourself in case your assets are drained paying for his care. HAT A DIFFERENCE a year makes! Last year, at this point in the season, it was hotter than Hades and dry as a bone. This year it has been warm, but we have had a few glorious days, and Mother Nature has not yet turned off the spigot. We are, however, still feeling the effects of last year. I am still waiting on my house to be finished after the tree landed on it, and I have become paranoid during storms. There are some very large trees out there that were terribly stressed by the drought, and it will take them years to recover. In the meantime, there are all sorts of insects and diseases that are preying on the weakened systems. That leads me to the list of things to do this month. » Walk around your yard. I say this every month, because you need to do it at least once a month! Look up for dead/ dying/damaged branches. Look down for insects, mold, and vole holes. Look in to your plants for signs of disease and insects. » While you are out there, make observations and take some photos

and some notes. What did well? What didn’t? Are there things that you really love and want more of ? What would you like to see different? This is a good time to make plans for next year. » You can plant trees, shrubs, and perennials now with one condition: You must be prepared to water. September and October are typically dry. Please call us if you have questions about watering! We see so many plants killed every year by people with good intentions and bad information. » You can plant cool season vegetables this month and continue to harvest warm season veggies. We don’t usually get a frost until late October, so you can have fresh produce until the plants give out! If you have an overabundance of garden goodies, the Good Samaritan Center in Lenoir City will take donations and give them out to those not fortunate enough to have access to fresh produce. » When your vegetable garden stops producing, clean it out. This is

especially important if you had disease or insect problems. They can overwinter and cause problems next year if they are not removed. Do not compost those plants either! » Some of your summer annuals will survive another few weeks if you give them a haircut and a gentle application of fertilizer. Others just need to go to the big compost heap in the sky. Wait until the nights are cooler before replacing them with pansies. If planted while it is too warm, pansies will stretch and get leggy. This is especially true in containers, because the soil gets warmer. » We are getting a lot of calls about webworms. They seem to be everywhere this year! You have several options for treatment: You can prune out the affected area and destroy it. You can use a rake or stick to tear the web apart, letting the birds have access. You can spray the web with an insecticide geared toward caterpillars or use the organic product bT. Please do not try to burn them out! I have seen people use a blowtorch, and it often does not end well. » It is mum season, so let’s have a quick lesson on these fall favorites: N u m b e r 1 : The mums that you see everywhere from the garden center to the gas station are hybrids that are far removed from the original perennial mums. If you get them in the ground by mid-September, they may come back. They may, however, be a different color, or they may come back as dozens of little “mumlets.” Number 2: There is no such thing as a mum that blooms from September to November. They have a four to six week bloom season that is extended by cooler temps and shortened by hot temperatures. If your neighbor has one that has bloomed all fall, it is not real! » If your mulch washed away in the summer rain, put a fresh layer down to protect your plants this winter. If your mulch is still thick enough but has gotten compacted, fluff it with a rake. » If you are planning on bringing tropicals or houseplants inside, you need to make sure they don’t bring unwanted guests with them. always makes me pause in awe is the giant exotic-looking foliage of Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Steroidal Giant’, commonly known as rice paper plant. Native to the swampy forests of Taiwan, this tropical can be used to make rice paper veneer sheets, artificial flowers, and is commonly utilized in traditional Chinese pharmacopeia to treat various ailments. While evergreen in zones 8 to 11, in Knoxville, the rice paper plant behaves like an herbaceous perennial with hardy roots and frost-sensitive stems that die back when temperatures fall below freezing. Copper-colored pubescent stems are adorned with oversized, deeply lobed graygreen leaves that can grow up to three feet wide. In the fall, small white flowers rise above the foliage on a multiple-branch panicle and are pollinated by bees. Once established, rice paper plant can reach up to 15 feet in height with an equal spread within a growing season. It can be used as a lush background in mixed borders, along walls, or used as a screening plant. At the UT Knoxville location, the plant is located in one of the annual trial beds where the dramatic foliage adds intense contrast to lower-growing flowering annuals. The UT Gardens, Jackson, location has a showy specimen in their courtyard that welcomes visitors. It is also more easily contained and managed. Both locations have the cultivar ‘Steroidal Giant’ that features a large clumping growth habit. Other noteworthy cultivars of rice paper plant include ‘Rex’ and ‘Empress’. ‘Rex’ forms clumps about half the size of ‘Steroidal Giant’ and ‘Empress’ is more tree forming with fewer suckers. When selecting a site, I

recommend using ‘Steroidal Giant’ for larger areas where it has enough room to grow and fill in. Cultivars ‘Rex’ and ‘Empress’ are better suited for smaller sites such as in garden beds or in borders. These great selections can add outstanding texture and a huge “wow” factor to your garden. Rice paper plant is not threatened by serious diseases or pests that persist; however, prolific suckering can be problematic if the plant is not maintained or if site selection was not considered. Rice paper plant spreads via underground rhizomes that can reach up to 10 feet from the original plant. These can be easily pulled up and removed to reinforce desired planting perimeter. When handling plant materials, gloves and a mask may be required, as the pubescence that covers stems and leaves can irritate eyes and skin if disturbed. Rice paper plant should be planted during late spring in rich, moist soil in conditions that range from full sun to partial shade. Be cautious of planting close to smaller plants, as they may get shaded out or taken over by the vigorous growth of rice paper plant. A thick layer of mulch should be added in the fall to provide roots protection during winter. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. Instead of pairing up with registered teams to play a full round of golf, the VFLs will be stationed throughout the course in order to interact and take pictures with all registered participants. The East Tennessee Kidney Foundation (ETKF) helps local kidney patients in 15 East Tennessee counties with costs for

transportation to and from dialysis treatments, free dental work for patients whose last barrier to placement on the kidney transplant waiting list is dental clearance, and provides nutritional supplements and also blankets to make dialysis treatments more comfortable for patients. Stories in Stitches: Quilts from the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Permanent Collection

A Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History A S T T E N N E S S E E families

treasure quilts made by their ancestors. Besides warming and decorating the bed, quilts also serve as reminders of important events – births, weddings, service to our country, the death of loved ones. Often these memories are preserved in notes attached to the quilts or through stories handed down to younger generations. Sometimes notes are lost and memories fade, leaving families with a “mystery quilt.” Did Grandma Jones or Granny Smith make this quilt? Or was it Aunt Jane? When did she make it? Why did she choose this pattern? What caused this stain or that tear? These are some of the mysteries that quilt historians try to address through genealogical research and technical analysis. From histories handed down to mysteries that remain, the new feature exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History provides visitors the opportunity to learn the “stories in stitches” from the quilts that have been entrusted to the East Tennessee Historical Society. Stories in Stitches features more than two dozen quilts with dates ranging from c. 1820 to 2001. The exhibition will be on display in the RogersClaussen Feature Gallery of the East Tennessee History Center now through January 2, 2018. Stories in Stitches is dedicated to Linda Claussen and Ginny Rogers for their years of service and support of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s quilt collection. When the East Tennessee Historical Society was founded in 1834, early collection efforts focused on books and manuscripts. In more recent decades, objects began to be added, and the idea of displaying them in a museum grew. The ETHS Permanent Collection acquired its first quilt in 1992, one year before the Museum of East Tennessee History opened on the first floor of the renovated Customs House. Now a part of the expanded East Tennessee History Center, the museum and its collection includes more than 100 quilts. The ETHS Permanent Collection focuses on quilts made or used in one of East Tennessee’s 35 counties. An acquisitions committee reviews potential additions, evaluating the quilt’s history, condition, and importance to the collection as a whole. Some quilts are displayed in the museum’s 52

signature exhibition, Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee. Others are cared for in climate-controlled storage and are brought out for special events or exhibitions like this one. The exhibition highlights more than two dozen quilts in a variety of fabrics and patterns and highlights some of the families who have made and cherished them. Patterns include everything from Rose of Sharon and “Knoxville Crazy Quilt” to a Civil War memory quilt and one pieced together out of clothing labels. The quilters range from John Sevier’s wife, Bonny Kate, to the Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee.

Knox Heritage is also working to support restoration, and representatives from the Tennessee Historic Commission have visited the home. In 2013, Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area acquired the house and lands and is exploring plans for creation of a historical interpretive site. KOWS to Host 6.2-Mile Open Water Swim Through Downtown Knoxville

K N O X V I L L E Open Water Swimmers (KOWS) and Tennessee Aquatics will host the Bridges to Bluffs Open Water Swim (B2B) on Sunday, September 17. This inaugural race is a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) swim in the Tennessee River, through downtown Knoxville, and is the only race of its kind in the country with an “off the boat” race start. “This is going to be a great event in East Tennessee,” said Allison Ware, Southeastern LMSC Chair. “B2B is perfectly positioned to attract swimmers from a huge geography due to the scenery and accessibility. With a great team organizing, a great course, and thorough planning, I really think this is a fantastic opportunity for Knoxville and easily will be a national caliber event.” The U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) sanctioned open water event is expecting 100 plus participants, including solo swimmers, duo relay teams, and pilots (kayakers supporting the swimmers to help guide them during the race). The race begins at 9 am from the Star of Knoxville Riverboat, which will be positioned adjacent to the new Suttree Park. From there, swimmers and their pilots will head downstream towards the urban skyline, under the Gay and Henley Street Bridges, past the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s Neyland Stadium, swim adjacent to the Cherokee Bluffs, and then finally under the Alcoa Highway Bridge in a race towards the finish just off shore of Sequoyah Hills Park. As participants finish, each will receive a branded race shirt, custom finisher’s award, post-race lunch, and race photos. The race

will last for a maximum of four hours, with race officials asking boat traffic in and around downtown that day to please operate at no wake speeds and be extra vigilant of race participants. The race is expected to draw interest locally and from around the globe. To date, local athletes have signed up, as well as swimmers from multiple countries, including past Olympians, athletes that have traversed the English Channel between the United Kingdom and France, and swimmers who have participated in the Manhattan Island swim off New York City. “I am so pleased with the support for the event already!” said Blaik Ogle, Co-Director of the B2B swim. “I hope this race will be just the start and provide local swimmers, myself included, a yearly event we can look forward to close to home.” Organizers are hopeful for a successful event, and the KOWS hope to make Knoxville a regular host for future open water events, with the possibility of bringing the USMS National Open Water Championships to Knoxville as soon as 2019. In partnership with Outdoor Knoxville and Legacy Parks, fundraising to support the race is currently underway with a variety of in-kind donations being accepted and sponsorship packages available. Any proceeds from the race are expected to go towards advancing river and shoreline beautification efforts already underway by Billy Lush Board Shop and KOWS via their four times yearly river clean-ups. On the Saturday immediately prior to the race, participants will be treated to a prerace day buffet dinner cruise on the Star of Knoxville, where athletes and pilots will get acquainted and receive a course preview. Additional meal tickets will be sold beginning September 10th on a first come, first serve basis until the boat is full. In September 2016, a small group of original KOWS members participated in an open water “race” in the Tennessee River, with some of the Chattanooga Open Water Swimmers, the COWS. It was at that point that the seed of an idea for a more formal race was planted. “We had a really fun time at that swim last fall and received a lot of positive feedback from swimmers in Chattanooga,” said Jack McAfee, Co-Director of the B2B swim. “We didn’t want to see it become just one and done.” The KOWS partnered with Tennessee Aquatics, the elite national swimming program in the area, who absorbed the group, and the KOWS benefited from their insurance coverage. That action opened the door for USMS sanctioning and allowed for the Knoxville race in September to be added to competitive swimming websites/calendars nationwide. KOWS continues to grow in numbers by working in coordination with local Triathlon Club presidents, who host a beginner’s open water session on some Mondays at The Cove, as well as training through Tennessee Aquatics, who provide training opportunities for those interested in competitive swimming.

ETTAC Launches New Evening Program for People with Disabilities

HE EAST TENNESSEE Technology Access Center will launch a new evening program, SPARK, for young adults with disabilities beginning on September 11. Daily activities will include art, music, recreation, tutoring, and literacy skills, as well as skillsbuilding classes such as robotics, gardening, and photography. The program will run from 4:00 to 7:30 pm Monday through Thursday at ETTAC’s South Knoxville location. “Whether participants are here to learn vocational skills, socialization, or just to have a good time and get out of the house, we want the SPARK program to be a safe and inviting place for people of all abilities,” said Joel Simmons, one of the coordinators of the program. “Our community center approach introduces a whole new set of experiences for our SPARK participants, and it allows us to spread the word about other assistive technology services that ETTAC offers.” SPARK is open to people of any ability ages 14+, including siblings and friends. Participants will work with ETTAC staff and caregivers to develop a plan to meet their personal, academic, and vocational goals. The weeknight program

has been rockin’ for more than 30 years. Atlanta residents have loved him since the 1980s when he and his brother, Rich, conquered their city – first as Mr. Crowe’s Garden, then as The Black Crowes. It was that last band name that the rest of the world became gleefully aware of them when their album, Shake Your Money Maker, was unleashed. In 2010, Chris and Rich put the band on an indefinite furlough and began to work on their own projects. Chris’s is The Chris Robinson Brotherhood and has been described by some as what you would get if you blended the Allman Brothers with the Grateful Dead. Chris would say they’re just making music. The CRB is hitting Knoxville’s Bijou Theatre on September 24th for the third time in support of their latest CD, Barefoot in the Head. It is about that album and the upcoming Knoxville show that I recently chatted with Chris. Early in our conversation, I mentioned the Allman Brothers/Grateful Dead analogy and asked Robinson if that was a fair assessment. “Well, I think the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead probably listened to a lot of the same records growing up just like the Rolling Stones listened to a lot of the same records that the Beatles did,” he said. “As much as music has influenced me and is an inspiration, I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where my father was a folk singer on ABC/ Paramount. I grew up in a house full of roots music. So on one hand I think it’s a broader influence, or you can find inspiration in the tradition you work in and take that and sort of turn it inside out and then find a place that’s ultimately big in the now or being in the present. “So I think those qualify, but I do think, between all of us in the CRB, there’s more than a hundred years of people making records or have been on tour. I’ve been doing it 30 years, and the others have been doing it 25 or 30 years themselves – Adam MacDougall and everyone, Tony Leone included and Jeff Hill.” In describing Barefoot in the Head for fans, Robinson said: “I think it’s the natural progression of the CRB’s sonic cycle that 56

we’re on. I don’t know. It’s a hard thing to describe. They’re songs and they’re melodies and images, and sometimes those images are musical and sometimes they’re literary. Sometimes they’re cinematic, and sometimes they’re super earthy and real. Hopefully the songwriting makes a connection and the band takes the material and presents in an interesting, dynamic way. We’re super lucky in this day and age to even have the opportunity to go into amazing studios and have this time to work and continue doing something that other people find archaic. Hopefully listening to the record is like an awesome evening of stimulation and conversation and culture with the people you love the most.” What can fans expect from this tour? “We’ll keep what we’re doing,” he said. “I think the more we keep our head down and just concentrate on this music – our scene grows every year. Knoxville is a great example. The first time we played, there were not that many people. The next three times, it’s like there’s always another 100 or 200 more people – another 250 people. Like I said, I don’t think we have to beat anyone over the head. It’s not the average jam band experience, and it’s not the average rock and roll experience, and it’s not this and it’s not that. I think you just have to come see if it’s something that works for you – if you like the sound."

Wrapping up our chat, I asked Robinson how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. “Oh my word. I’m the Draymond Green of rock and roll. I’m sorry, man. Kingsville

Sitting on 825,000 acres in South Texas, an area larger than Rhode Island, the King Ranch established a “cow camp” and quickly became one of the most influential ranches in the world. Today the King Ranch is a National Historic Landmark and offers several daily tour options: From the history of the ranch where you’ll see the historic Santa Gertrudis Creek, where Captain King first camped in 1852, along with the grand home built in 1912 by Captain King’s widow, Henrietta – to nature tours. A surprise to many is the fact the ranch is home to such a diverse ecosystem of plants and animals. In fact, famed conservationist Aldo Leopold called King Ranch “one of the best jobs of wildlife restoration on the continent,” and it is now home to more than 363 species of birds, including the largest known population of ferruginous pygmyowls in the U.S. 58

Yoakum

Like many towns that benefited from those traveling the Chisholm Trail, Yoakum did not sit on the trail itself but is located about an hour from San Antonio. Due to its proximity to this population center, it quickly became used as a gathering ground for cattle to be driven up the Chisholm Trail and is considered by many to be the official starting place of the trail. With the introduction of the railroad, the trail became defunct, so this inventive town found new ways to prosper beyond the cattle industry by encouraging its residents to grow tomatoes that could be easily shipped on the rail lines.

San Antonio

San Antonio became a gathering location for many herders starting their long journey. Trail drives were extremely important to the local economy. Now both the Witte Museum and the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum provide artifacts and exhibits that give visitors an idea of the beginnings of Texas cowboy life. While the Battle of the Alamo was long over by the time of the Chisholm Trail, history buffs can’t miss this incredible landmark while in town, along with the four other Spanish colonial missions, which were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015.

Lockhart

Just 70 miles northeast of San Antonio, Lockhart was where two herding routes converged and on some days, 5,000 to 6,000 heads of cattle passed through this outpost. Today, on the second weekend of June, Lockhart celebrates the Chisholm Trail by hosting the Chisholm Trail Roundup, a fourday festival featuring a chili cook-off, rodeo, and even a cowboy breakfast around a chuck

wagon on the courthouse square. You can also celebrate the trail’s spirit year-round at Chisholm Trail Bar-B-Que, which has been serving slow-cooked meats from real pits using post oak wood since 1978.

Waco

Continuing northward, cattle herds crossed the Brazos River in Waco on their way to Kansas. In 1870, the newly completed Waco Suspension Bridge, a National Historic Landmark created by the same architect behind the Brooklyn Bridge, provided a convenient, albeit costly, means for cattlemen to move herds across the Brazos. A sculpture near the Waco Suspension Bridge still commemorates the famous Chisholm Trail and captures the diversity of trail riders. These days Waco provides visitors with an incredible range of activities, from checking out Ice Age–era fossils at the Waco Mammoth National Monument to uncovering delightful home and garden goods at Magnolia Market.

Fort Worth

Fort Worth, for many traveling the Chisholm Trail, was the last main stop to rest and refresh supplies. The city quickly became known as “Cowtown.” Today the Fort Worth Stockyards transports visitors back in time when watching the Fort Worth Herd, the world’s only twicedaily cattle drive, which takes place from 11:30 am to 4 pm every day in the stockyards. This area also features several restaurants and shops, along with the Stockyards Museum. UNDRESS ACADEMY for the Arts is excited to announce its first writing retreat for veterans on October 7-8. This two-day retreat at SAFTA’s Firefly Farms is for military veterans and current service members and will be a space for creativity, writing exercises, discussions on ways to write about trauma, advice on publishing, and more. This weekend will be an opportunity to express shared experiences and learn to write your story for a non-military audience. Now she’ll be able to advocate for her special education students as a member of the Tennessee Educator Fellowship. “I love getting to know my students and seeing them improve,” said Pickett. “Middle school kids are hilarious, and I always have great stories by the end of the day.” Pickett teaches eighth-grade special education at Holston Middle School, where she’s starting her fifth year. She also completed her student teaching internship at Holston. “Education appealed to me as a way to make a difference,” she said. “I’ve always loved learning and wanted to help kids fall in love with learning as well. Inspiring a child to love learning and reach his or her goals is 64

such a rewarding experience.” Pickett earned her degree in special education and positive psychology at Carson-Newman University. At Holston, she teaches a math intervention class and a small group special education math class, and she co-teaches with other eighth-grade math teachers in inclusion classes. “Inclusion classes are a mix of students with disabilities such as learning disabilities, ADHD, or autism spectrum disorders, and students without disabilities working on regular eighth-grade curriculum with additional support,” she said. “I am also responsible for creating Individualized Education Plans for students with disabilities and making sure any classroom accommodations they need are being used in the classroom.” Pickett’s biggest challenge is meeting the

I am excited to bring back what I learn and use it in my classroom, school, and district.”

Words such as “tolerance” and “capacity” are often used interchangeably. John Fawaz In fact, they are quite CERTIFIED FINANCIAL different. PLANNER™ Risk capacity is a measure of your financial ability to sustain risk. In a practical financial planning context, risk capacity is measured in terms of an individual’s asset base, anticipated withdrawals, liquidity needs, and time horizon. For example, if you need to fund retirement withdrawals of $20,000 a year from an asset base of $1 million starting 10 years from now, you would have a very high capacity for risk. You will still have ample means to sustain your retirement goals even if you experience several years of portfolio underperformance. However, if you need to fund immediate retirement withdrawals of $40,000 a year from an asset base of $500,000, you would have a much smaller capacity for risk. Your plan would likely fail with anything less than strong portfolio returns from the very start. Therefore, you would have very little capacity to take risks. Risk tolerance measures your ability to handle risk emotionally. It evaluates your willingness to take on the risk of receiving lower returns in exchange for the potential of earning higher returns later on. This pure aspect of an individual’s risk tolerance has nothing to do with risk capacity. Advisors, therefore, must be cautious about not leading their clients to reach particular decisions by assuming that they and their clients share the same risk tolerance levels through how they ask questions, frame the discussion, or communicate non-verbally. The combination of your financial risk capacity and emotional risk tolerance creates the foundation on which an overall portfolio can be created to determine the appropriate investment solutions that will be right for you and your family. Do you fully understand what risk means to you?
