brings a few things to mind such as cooler temperatures, colorful foliage, and usually fall festivals. But the pandemic has changed the activities that we have come to enjoy during the fall season. Many events have been canceled or postponed, but Photo by D. Roberts Photography one attraction we can still enjoy this fall is the Smoky Mountains. They are especially striking during autumn, which is why visitors have traveled to our area to enjoy our special corner of Tennessee. Health and safety are a priority these days as we all navigate through the pandemic, and our feature article focuses on Gallian Medical Group, a medical facility in Hardin Valley. Dr. Scott Gallian and his team provide a level of compassionate care that many of us remember from our past such as a caring, unrushed environment. Their facility is expanding, so if you are looking for 4

a healthcare experience that you thought no longer existed, then contact Gallian Medical Group. Labor Day is celebrated in September, and it signals symbolically the end of summer. Labor Day is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they make to the strength and prosperity of our country and are vital to our economy’s recovery. So celebrate and appreciate the American worker. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention a September day in our history – September 11th. We at Everything Knoxville will always remember those that were lost on that fateful day and those that suffered losses. Let’s not forget this now historic day that changed everything. So enjoy September and the coming of the fall season. It’s a great time to be in Tennessee!

Say Goodbye to Assembly Line Medicine

Y

OU MAY HAVE to take a number

and stand in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles, but you don’t have to settle for the assembly line-like experience growing so common nowadays. Advances in medical science in the United States have dramatically enhanced life expectancies from 54.1 years in 1918 to 78.9 years in 2020. However, these revolutionary advances in medicine have come at an enormous financial and personal cost to patients as many rural hospitals are forced to close their doors and urban hospitals and medical centers are forced to consolidate or face going out of business. Today only one-third of physicians are still in private practice, and it is estimated that only 50% of our current health system will remain in place during the next decade. If you’re the type of individual who truly values your relationships with your medical providers once so prevalent in the healthcare 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2020

community, it’s easy to appreciate your concern for the future as medical care becomes increasingly driven by bottom lines - often at the expense of you, the patient. Fortunately, a growing number of private practice medical providers are pushing back against these managed care, socialized medical models so common in Europe and elsewhere today. Launched in 2016 by husband and wife team, Scott Gallian, MD, MBA, and U.S. Air Force veteran, and Lauren Gallian, FNP-BC, Gallian Medical Group in nearby Hardin Valley offers a fresh and totally new approach to providing caring and compassionate, fullservice primary care to their patients, unlike the socialized medicine trends that so much of our healthcare system has embarked on. Complete with in-house diagnostic lab, EKG, and X-ray services, Gallian Medical Group offers their patients a level of medical

excellence that’s becoming increasingly more difficult to find today. What patients appreciate the most about Gallian Medical Group is a level of compassionate caring that they remember from their past. Gone are the “bus station-like” waiting room experiences and “steeple chase-like” visits with your healthcare provider. What remains is a team of dedicated medical professionals who are totally committed to your individual healthcare needs in a caring, compassionate, and unrushed environment. We trust that you are going to enjoy this month’s issue of Everything Knoxville and our interview with Scott Gallian, MD, and Family Nurse Practitioner, Lauren Gallian, FNC-BC, and the newest member of the Gallian healthcare team, Family Nurse Practitioner, Gina Bearden, FNC-BC. We believe that at Gallian Medical Group, you will rediscover an entirely new level of Photos by D. Roberts Photography

personalized healthcare that you might have thought no longer existed. EK: You have all experienced today’s socialized medical trends firsthand as providers. Describe your experiences and how they helped you to envision a new future for your patients at Gallian Medical Group. Scott: In the outpatient setting, we felt as if our employers were dictating the level of care and not the patient in consultation with their physician. At Gallian Medical Group, we put the focus back on the patient and provide them with the time needed to fully describe their symptoms and to treat them. We don’t lock our patients into 15 minute blocks of time. EK: How have your patients responded to the level of care they receive at Gallian Medical Group? Lauren: They thoroughly enjoy it. They don’t like being rushed or ignored. I think most of our new patients are surprised at our more measured approach to healthcare. Accustomed as they are to the assembly line medical treatments they experience elsewhere, they are often surprised to discover that we take the time to really listen to them. They genuinely appreciate the fact that we desire to have a meaningful provider/patient relationship with them. Patients who wish to be more proactive in achieving their optimum level of health really enjoy their new provider/patient relationships. EK: I guess another indication of your success is the fact that your are currently expanding your medical facility to meet the needs of your growing group of patients. Tell us about your expansion plans. Scott: We’re grateful to our growing number of new patients, for their trust in us and their support and encouragement. To meet this growing patient base and the additional providers, we are currently expanding our medical facility. We are adding 1,500 additional square feet of exam rooms, provider offices, and nurse work centers. Our new addition is scheduled to be complete in October. EK: Gina, as the newest addition to the Gallian Medical Group healthcare team, tell our readers a little bit about yourself. Gina: My family moved to Tennessee from Michigan when I was eight. I attended nursing school at Tennessee State University and

earned my master’s degree from Vanderbilt University. I have worked as an ICU nurse and have 20 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner, with a decade of that practicing in Endocrinology. EK: What most influenced your decision to join the Gallian Medical Group team? Gina: Like the entire team at Gallian, I practice evidence-based medicine and feel passionate about treating the patient as a whole - truly listening to them and getting to the root of their problem. Like my fellow team members, I am extremely thorough and detailed in my management and want the patient to feel comfortable and confident in their care, but, most importantly, I want to show compassion to each patient. I look forward to making a valuable contribution to Gallian Medical Group and their family of patients throughout our East Tennessee community. EK: What services do you provide at Gallian Medical Group? Lauren: We provide evidence-based primary care for patients age 12 and up. We have our own lab and X-ray machine. We also perform EKGs and spirometry services. We offer preventative care and immunizations, chronic disease management, hypertension management, nutrition and wellness management, diabetes management, physicals, and a variety of other services. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm. Same-day appointments are available. We also offer Telemedicine for your convenience. EK: Because you’re a private practice medical practice facility, in what other ways do your patients benefit? Scott: Choice is clearly an important way in which our patients benefit. If they need a service we can’t provide, then they are free to go wherever they like. They can choose any specialist, any hospital, any other ancillary service they want - not just the ones under a certain corporate umbrella. Patients also want a provider they can stay with for life, not someone that will move on after the provider’s contract expires or if the corporate employer makes decisions affecting the doctor-patient relationship. Patients want their provider, not a replacement or substitute. We plan on being here for many years to come.

EK: Unlike other area healthcare providers that experience high staff turnover, your team has been with you for a number of years. How important is this to your patients? Lauren: Extremely important. Our staff is a big reason for our success. We feel the patient's relationship with our staff is as important as the patient's relationship with us. Our staff is like family to us. EK: What is a typical patient wait time? Lauren: Most of the time less than 15 minutes. Rarely more than 30 minutes. EK: You appear to attract a great many Medicare patients. Why is that? Scott: Medicare patients are a special population. They generally have more healthcare needs and have higher expectations than other groups of patients. They usually are more in tune with their health than a younger person and more self-educated about their health. We want them to know we’re here to meet their expectations and provide the quality care they deserve in order to achieve their optimal level of health and well-being. EK: What other types of insurance do you accept? Scott: Almost all commercial insurances, Medicare, and Medicare Advantage plans. We don’t discriminate based on a patient’s insurance status. EK: How can people learn more about Gallian Medical Group? Lauren: Our website is www.gallianmedical. com. We also encourage people to visit our Facebook page. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Scott: We want your readers to know that we will go the extra mile to ensure they have a truly wonderful healthcare experience, the type of experience they might have thought no longer existed in today’s steeple-chase medical marketplace.

Dollywood’s Annual Homeschool Days Allows Students to Explore Unique Outdoor Classroom DOLLYWOOD HOSTS its annual Ho m e sc h o o l D ays n ow t h ro u g h September 21, and with more people turning to homeschooling as an option due to the current pandemic, some families who visit may be surprised at how much they can learn from a trip to the Smoky Mountain park. During Homeschool Days, students in grades K-12 may purchase a ticket to the park for just $37 plus tax. Accompanying adults may purchase a ticket for $47 plus tax. To purchase tickets, homeschool families should call Dollywood group sales at 888428-6789 Monday through Friday. Purchase must be made at least 72 hours in advance of the planned visit. Homeschool tickets are not available at the front gate. Additionally, homeschool students may take advantage of a special rate at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa. When calling to purchase their tickets, families should ask about booking at the resort. The rate of $129 per night (Sunday through Thursday only) is available for homeschoolers now through September 24. Not many classrooms measure 160 acres, but Dollywood is at the head of the class when it comes to fun, interactive learning in a beautiful outdoor setting.

WHERE LEARNING IS FUN!

Dollywood’s rides represent principles of physics that thrill students in more ways than one. The law of conservation of momentum can be observed on the bumper cars. On the Smoky Mountain River Rampage, Archimedes’ principle, buoyant force, and displacement can be learned. Dollywood also has created new curriculum based on some of its most popular roller coasters called “Science in the Park.” A Science in the Park workbook - downloadable at www.dollywood.com/ groups/education - guides students through how the park’s coasters demonstrate the principles of gravity, speed, velocity, and so much more.

SCIENCE IN THE PARK Dollywood offers a unique ornithology lesson at the spectacular Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, home to the country’s largest collection of non-releasable bald eagles. Dollywood also is headquarters for the not-for-profit American Eagle Foundation (AEF), which promotes the preservation of the bald eagle and other birds of prey. A 1.5 million-cubic-foot natural outdoor aviary in the park’s Craftsman’s Valley area recreates the birds’ natural habitat, giving students the rare opportunity to see these magnificent birds up close. Adjacent to Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, the Wings of America show provides an in-depth look at several different species of raptors, including hawks, vultures, owls, and golden eagles. Download the Wings of America workbook and worksheet - created in conjunction with the AEF - at www.dollywood.com/groups/education. TVA, Dollywood’s Official Education Partner, has created a number of STEM-based experiences that correlate to the park’s attractions. Several online learning modules can be found at www.TVAstem.com/Dollywood. The Dollywood-related curriculum teaches about water filtration and conservation, potential and kinetic energy, alternative modes of transportation, harnessing water to create electricity, and more. Additionally, TVA “Did You Know?” signs can be found throughout the park, which feature educational facts tied to the Dollywood experience. Those looking for a history lesson can see centuries-old techniques come to life as Dollywood features dozens of craft demonstrations daily. Students visiting Dollywood can see master craftspeople practicing unique art forms like glass blowing, blacksmithing, leather crafting, candle making, wood carving, and pottery. “G

ETTING ORGANIZED” is something we all know we should do, but often the activity gets pushed aside to make room for more pressing priorities. Perhaps we need to move the endeavor up the list. Clearing clutter, creating systems, and developing routines can reduce stress and ward off depression - useful benefits in times such as these. And for children experiencing a very different academic school year, getting organized can be a lifesaver. Room to Think An environment freed of clutter allows a child to focus on the task at hand - be it schoolwork or renewing playtime. Having the space to spread out with a project creates feelings of safety, security, and clarity. And family schedules can progress smoother when storage zones are designated and regularly maintained, allowing everyone to find what they need, when they need it. Establish fun incentives for your child to regularly go through their room, backpack, etc., putting things back where they belong and discarding or donating items they no longer need or use. HOLA Lakeway succeeded the Latino Task Force of Morristown in 2014. In 2018, the organization began to see a growth in the community of immigrant families from other parts of the world like India, Micronesia, and Pakistan and decided to expand its efforts to serve all immigrants in the community. Telemedicine: The Convenient and Safe Way to Meet with Your Doctor

T

HE

D A Y S of making a doctor’s appointment just to sit in a waiting room and spend more than an hour in the office is over. Telemedicine is the new and improved way of meeting with your doctor. Telemedicine allows you to discuss medical issues, symptoms, and more with a healthcare provider in real time. You can receive a diagnosis, treatment options, and a prescription with just a short phone call, video chat, or email. Accessibility and affordability are the driving forces behind the growth of telemedicine. A patient may be in a remote area or unable to travel. Plus, it may help reduce the need to visit the ER. The average doctor’s visit is $149, and the average trip to the emergency room is $1,734. According to a 2017 study, the average telemedicine visit costs $79. As telemedicine becomes more popular, many health insurance plans are beginning to offer coverage. Before using telemedicine, check with your specific plan to know your financial obligation. These four tips will help you have an effortless visit: 1. Prepare - Write down your symptoms, medications, and questions you want to ask. Check that your technology works properly. 2. Find a quiet space - Find somewhere you can hear the doctor and allow yourself time before the call to get settled. 3. Tell your doctor everything - Go into detail about your condition and explain concerns and any changes in your medical history. Provide any vital signs that may be helpful, such as temperature. 4. Agree on a plan - Ask questions about any prescribed medication, insurance, and agree on a treatment. Take notes and ask about follow-up visits. Telemedicine doesn’t mean that you’ll never step foot in a doctor’s office again. Remember, telemedicine is not intended for emergency situations. Health issues, including colds and flu, insect bites, rashes, and sore throats, are common issues. Telemedicine is a convenient, safe option for patients who may suffer from disabilities, want to stay in the safety of their home, or avoid possible infection.

Don’t Let the New SECURE Act Rules Take 40% of Your IRA B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

As part of our wealth management services, we help our clients successfully navigate these intricate IRA rules.

G E N T L E M A N in his late 60s

came to see me recently and told me that his beloved father had left him an IRA worth just over $1 million. He told me how he had already filled out the forms to withdraw the money and use it to pay off his house, take a trip, and give some money to his own kids and grandkids. And then he wanted help investing the rest of the money for his own retirement. I asked him a question that caught him by surprise: “Did you budget for the $400,000 in taxes you just triggered by taking a lump sum withdrawal of the entire account?” Sadly, he had not realized that the IRA withdrawal was taxable income. I had to tell him that the IRS doesn’t allow us to “un-ring” the bell, put the money back, and draw it out more slowly instead. There are no do-overs with inherited IRAs. I can see the potential for new tax mishaps under the SECURE Act that was enacted in 2019, which now requires beneficiaries to empty the inherited IRA account by the end of 10th year following the year of death. Within that 10-year period, there is total flexibility

- withdraw it all or withdraw none. I fear that the years might blur and heirs inadvertently lose track of how long it’s been and accidentally miss the deadline. Because if they empty the account on the first day of the 11th

year, there is a 50% penalty on the late withdrawal PLUS income tax owed. A $1 million IRA would have a $500,000 penalty and a $400,000 income tax bill, leaving the heirs with $100,000. Crazy, isn’t it? On the plus side, the 10-year period is a great tax planning opportunity, allowing an heir to take large distributions in some years and none in others, using the flexibility allowed within that time period to their advantage, minimizing the amount of tax ultimately paid. The SECURE Act has raised the urgency of tax planning and ongoing advice. First, IRA account owners need their named beneficiary designations set up correctly to give heirs the option of the 10-year window, and second, the heirs need professional ongoing advice to minimize their tax bill and avoid needless penalties. Navigating the nuances of inherited IRAs is not for the faint of heart - and there are no do-overs. As part of our wealth management services, we help our clients successfully navigate these intricate IRA rules. Our clients don’t spend their free time reading the complex tax code, because we do it for them! Peace of mind is priceless. Join us for a 30 minute Zoom webinar on Wednesday, September 16, at 10:30 am to learn more about how you can protect yourself from unintentional mistakes and use the SECURE Act IRA requirements to your advantage. Make The Smoky Mountains

Your Happy Place

Carol’s parents’ opportunities for hospitality continued to grow. Neighbors with vacation homes on the mountain began to leave their keys with her mom and dad, so her parents could rent their homes. As Gatlinburg grew into a year-round vacation destination, people began to buy properties as a rental investment. As a result, Carol’s parents began managing more and more rental properties. Mountain Laurel Chalets Management Company was born – a true family business. “My siblings and I answered our home phone, Mountain Laurel Chalets, how may I help you?” Carol recalled. “We were reservationists, cleaners, laundry workers, customer service representatives, remodelers, and decorators. While in college, my siblings and I recruited friends to help us clean cabins on busy fall and holiday weekends. We had a blast with our friends, and they enjoyed the extra spending money they earned.”

any people find happiness in the Smoky Mountains. Burdens seem to roll off as the M stately mountains come in sight. The Smokies

are a restful place to retreat from the busyness of life and to be restored and refreshed by their beauty and serenity. Life is just better in the mountains.

Having grown up in Gatlinburg, Carol experienced the splendor of the mist-shrouded Smokies that greeted her each morning as Mt. LeConte stood majestically outside her bedroom window. “My childhood was filled with the joys of living in the mountains,” Carol remembered. “My days were spent outside exploring, hiking, picking blueberries, sledding, building forts, and eating family meals on our front porch picnic table. My parents’ love of the mountains not only overflowed to my siblings and me, but also to everyone they met. They welcomed relatives and friends into our home who wanted to visit the Smokies.”

Carol considers it a privilege to have grown up in a family who loved combining life and business together as they endeavored to bless others through their hospitality. Carol’s mom and dad are gone. They left her with this wonderful legacy of six incredible rental cabins nestled in the Smokies which became Trillium Family Properties to be shared with families like yours. Imagine cool mountain breezes, the sound of gentle winds rustling through the surrounding trees, the smell of pine trees, an abundance of wildlife, and a crackling fire at sunset. And of course, the awe-inspiring views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Trillium Family Properties looks forward to the opportunity to share our mountains with you, your children and grandchildren. Why not begin creating a lifetime of fond memories by contacting us today and reserving your family getaway or staycation? Why not start your own family legacy in the mountains? Visit us online at www.TrilliumFamilyProperties.com to explore all our cabins and to book your family escape.

In the 1970s, Gatlinburg’s popularity grew. The local mom and pop hotels could not meet the demand for rooms. Visitors found themselves stranded with nowhere to stay. “Because the hotel owners trusted Mom and Dad, they asked them to take these desperate vacationers into their home,” Carol explained. “Our family would scramble to clean a bedroom and bathroom in time to welcome weary travelers to our mountain home.”

Invisalign: The Clear Alternative to Braces

I

F YOU FIND yourself comparing

your smile to others whose smiles exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth, then perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve a whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many. Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces. Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster. Patients report that Invisalign aligners fit and feel better. Also, innovations in the Invisalign procedure move

more smiles, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners. Perhaps what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend your treatment without ever having met you. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist?

To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

GET 72% MORE DONE BY MAKING TIME TO EXERCISE (REALLY)! BY ANDREW HENDERSON, O W N E R O F F I T N E S S TO G E T H E R

I

’LL MAKE THIS quick, because

if you’re like me, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. This article is specifically for busy people who are struggling to get a fitness program started and find themselves using the “not enough time” excuse too often. Maybe you’ve got good intentions, but your busy schedule just keeps interfering. Maybe you’re just not using the time you have as effectively as you could be. Whatever your reasons, I hope you’ll keep reading. My name is Andrew Henderson, and I’m the owner of Fitness Together here in Knoxville. I’ve been helping busy people like yourself improve their fitness and feel better about themselves for 25 years. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard someone say “I want to exercise, but I just don’t have enough time,” I’d probably be a millionaire. And I get it - we have family and work obligations, household chores, social obligations, and the list goes on. But here’s a statistic you might find interesting… in a research study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, it was found that participants demonstrated a 72% increase of time management and workload completion on days that they exercised versus the non-exercise days. Just think of what you could accomplish if you were 72% more productive! So by making the time to exercise, these participants actually got more done that day and essentially gained more time to do other things. How much time will you need to set aside for exercise? That depends somewhat on your goals and how intensely you plan to exercise. For most people, averaging 30 minutes a day is a great start. That’s about 2% of the 24 hours in a day. So by investing about 2% of the total of your day into exercise, you can be 72% more productive. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a bargain to me. If you’re not doing anything, start with a walk around the block or some simple body weight exercises. Ride your bike, play golf, or go for a short hike... just get moving! If you are currently going to the gym or exercising at home, consider using supersetting or circuiting your exercises so that when one muscle group works, the other one is resting. A great example would be a circuit similar to this: 15 squats (lower body),

Participants demonstrated a 72% increase of time management and workload completion on days that they exercised versus the non-exercise days.

shorter amount of time! And if you’re really serious about improving your health, I’d encourage you to meet with a fitness professional that can help you design a program that will yield the maximum benefits in the least amount of time. That way you’re focusing on doing the exercises that are MOST beneficial to you and skipping the ones that may not be as valuable or even dangerous. Thanks for reading. I hope you are inspired to action to improve your own health and fitness and can use some of these tips to fit exercise into your busy day!

15 push-ups (upper body), and a 1-minute plank (core muscles). Go immediately from one to the next (keeping the heart rate up), and repeat this circuit two or three times. This will allow you to get a lot more done in a

GREAT GRILLING IDEAS FOR EASY HOME-COOKED MEALS A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

A

NY DAY is the perfect day to fire up the grill. Simple or elaborate,

gas or charcoal - any type of grill can impart flavors and textures that make home-cooked meals extra special. No need to cook indoors and heat up the kitchen when the outdoor grill is ready to go. Enjoy outdoor recreation time when steak with grapes and Stilton is on the menu. Ready in under 15 minutes, this easy entrée pairs grilled flank steak with greens, Stilton cheese, grapes, and a light vinaigrette dressing. The quintessential seasonal salad, this will please diners of all ages. Keep the grill hot for making grilled grape, strawberry, and mango skewers with honey-orange glaze for dessert. Grilling caramelizes the natural sugars in fruit to concentrate the natural sweetness and intensify fruit flavors. Serve warm right off the grill or prepare ahead of time for a delicious, guilt-free treat. Cool, refreshing grapes are an easy anytime snack, so be sure to include California grapes on every grocery list to have handy for snacking and light recipes. Store unwashed in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, rinse immediately before eating or cooking, and enjoy! For more great grilling ideas, download the e-cookbook “Get Grilling with Grapes!” from www.grapesfromcalifornia.com.

GREG HARRIS – CEO, ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

R

OCK AND ROLL is a staple of

American – as well as Western – society. The genre has spanned eight decades. So it’s not hard to grasp that Rock and Roll needed a Hall of Fame and museum to commemorate, document, and memorialize its impact and accomplishments in the world. Halfway through rock’s life, that necessity became a reality with the establishment of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1983. Boomerocity has had an excellent relationship with the Rock Hall for going on 11 years as of this writing. The current CEO (since 2013), Greg Harris, has contributed comments for us on various Rock Hall inductees we’ve interviewed, and I felt it was high time we interviewed him to find out what is going on at the institution during these trying times. I reached Greg recently at his home. The Hall is now open, but at the time of our chat, the Hall was closed because of the pandemic. “The museum’s been closed since March 14, but we’ve been cranking,” he said. “We’ll talk a little bit about all the digital stuff we’re putting out there, going into our vaults, the Rock Hall classes, online learning for students and teachers - all that’s been terrific. We’re excited.” When asked about the changes he’s brought since assuming the helm of the Hall, Greg said, “We’ve changed the museum drastically. We recast the entire place with a brand new mission statement shortly after taking over as CEO. And we simply focus on... ‘to engage, teach, and inspire through the power of rock and roll.’ We’ve gone much heavier on live music and on experiential activities

in the museum. We now have a theater with a film by Jonathan Demi that’s an experiential theater with great, immersive screenings and amazing sound. You feel like you’re at the greatest concert ever. “We put in a restaurant on our first floor that’s a true restaurant with local celebrity chefs that do all the menus. We have food trucks that we own and a beer truck in a beer garden on our front plaza. A summer stage that we’ve gone from having a handful of concerts each summer to close to 100 days last year of live music on our plaza. And it’s all about creating an authentic experience. “When you arrive at the museum, there are giant letters out front that say ‘Long Live Rock’ that are immersive... you engage with them. We have speakers set up all throughout downtown Cleveland that play the same rock and roll song every hour - like church bells going off in downtown, but instead it’s rock and roll music. It’s synced up every single hour, and a new song plays. Then we’ve also grown our admission greatly - gone from about 400,000 people to closer to 600,000 people a year. Just in general, we’ve been in a really intense growth period until all this stuff hit us back in March. In fact, each year has been the best year we’ve ever had. January and February were our two best January and Februarys, March was trending to be the best that we’ve ever had, and suddenly everything ground to a halt. I forgot something before we get to that. We also took the entire second floor for the museum, called The Garage, and made it so visitors can play instruments and jam with each other.” I asked Greg if anything unique has taken place in the garage.

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “We’ve had the guys in Metallica in there cranking. We’ve had Booker T in there playing. We’ve had 100plus artists in there. The band Berlin, Lita Ford, some of the guys from Deep Purple, some E Street Band members have been in there, Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC, and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple. “Just about every rock fan knows the famous Prince guitar solo of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ in honor of George Harrison. That was an induction ceremony. He’s there with Tom Petty playing guitar. Jeff Lynne of ELO is playing with him. Who else is with him? George Harrison’s son. And that’s only one induction moment. Inductions have happened for 35 years. There are a bunch more like that that are just off the charts and incredible. This week we’re doing Aretha Franklin’s induction, and we’ll share that. She also performs with Sam Moore. There’s another thing of Aretha singing with Reverend Al Green at the induction. It’s just the greatest footage at these important moments.” Greg shared so much more that you can now listen to by going to www.boomerocity.com. Also, visit www.RockHall.com to check out their online offerings, as well as to plan your visit there. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

HEN I WAS in the market

for a paddleboard, I noticed them wherever I went. When we were expecting our first child, we shared knowing glances with fellow parents to be. When we are passionate about something, that “something” jumps out at us wherever we go. We tend to notice everything about the subject that interests us. For my husband, John, his passion is floors. You may laugh, and sometimes I do, too, but since we entered the deep-cleaning and restoration business a decade ago, he notices every single floor, walkway, and patio we encounter. Imagine conversation starters like: “This restaurant should have sealed this floor when they installed it. It could have stayed beautiful, but now it’s ruined.” Or “It looks as though an acid wash has destroyed the integrity of this tile. That’s unfortunate.” If the flooring is salvageable, sometimes he approaches the business owner and asks if he would like some help dealing with the problem. More than once, the owner is grateful for some

free expertise, and a friendship is born. John has a vast array of knowledge about whether a stone is manmade or natural, if porcelain is old or new. He can differentiate between a color seal and a colored grout and which cleaning/sealing method the home or business owner should use. He knows how to properly clean and maintain tile, carpet, concrete, and even brick pavers. He often takes before/after photos of his day’s work. When he gets home, he often whips out his photos, describing each one in detail. Sometimes I chuckle when he gets so excited about his day’s work, but

Do You Have Pinhole Leaks? It Might Be Your Water…

B Y D AV I D B R E W S T E R , O W N E R O F AQ U A C L E A R WAT E R SY S T E M S , L LC

I

HAVE HEARD pinhole leaks are a

huge pain. Not from personal experience, but from the clients I have worked with. Stories of massive floods, ripping out drywall, hidden mold growing behind the wall, and 10k-20k re-plumbing jobs having to be done. And the sad part is most people think it’s just their old plumbing, and there is no alternative but to invest in totally gutting the plumbing. Luckily, we have saved many clients from turning their home into a job site by fixing the water that travels through those old pipes. Chlorine is corrosive to copper. It reacts with the copper to create a chemical compound: Copper chloride. This compound can slowly attack copper from the inside, which results in those tiny but destructive pinhole leaks.

Also, hard water, an abundance of calcium/ magnesium, can erode copper pipes if a hot water recirculation pump is installed. Kinetico water systems remove the chlorine, chloramines, and hardness that can attack copper pipes. We also add a special coating filter, after the Kinetico system, to recoat the copper plumbing from the years of damage. After installing hundreds of Kinetico Systems to fix our clients’ pinhole leak issues, we can say with 100% certainty that it works. We’ve been saving our valued clients from 10k-20k re-plumbing jobs and from turning their home into a job site. And not only did they save their plumbing, but they also get all the other benefits of installing a Kinetico whole house water filtration system. We are

so confident that we have a turn-key pinhole leak prevention system that we will refund your investment if it doesn’t stop your pinhole leak problem. Call or text 865-986-4234 to schedule your free pinhole leak assessment, and get your questions answered.

Rev Up Your Garage It Starts with the Floor

PremierGarage will make a stained, pitted garage floor with a badly damaged expansion joint look showroom quality.

W

E’VE ALL SEEN IT: The house that is the epitome of curbside appeal - until the garage door opens, revealing a disorganized mess. If your garage’s main purpose is random storage, maybe it’s time to repurpose all that valuable space. PremierGarage of Knoxville can help you transform your overlooked and underused garage into functional living space, starting with a custom garage floor to take your garage from frantic to fabulous. Why consider anything beyond your standard-issue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials - from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) - from soaking into the porous concrete. » Fill and cover up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely not as much as you would like to. Why? No doubt because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. Today homeowners are increasingly creating popular “outdoor living” or “staycation” places, including porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weatherproof. But the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces as often as they would like. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor living spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the great outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or surrounding esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Because these retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes, they help to provide a seamless transition between your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. Screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun, and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is required. Start enjoying your home’s “outdoor living” and “staycation” spaces to their full potential today. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

September in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

C ONGRATULATIONS!

You have made it to the end of the 3rd quarter of 2020. Welcome to level seven of Jumanji. Some of you aren’t going to get that reference, so to you I will just say let’s see what else this year can throw at us. It has been a very interesting year in many ways, and that includes gardening. Many of you planted more this spring than you ever have in your life. Others planted vegetable gardens for the first time or the first time in years. Mother Nature was kind with rainfall to some, and others watched the rainfall go around them. Insects and fungus have been abundant while the chemicals used to treat those plant problems are starting to be in short supply. In other words, some of you have developed a love of gardening, and some of you are so frustrated that you never want to touch another plant. If you loved it, welcome to the gardening family! If you didn’t, don’t give up. Maybe you just needed more

help. Google is a great tool, but it sometimes provides conflicting information or information that works in a different area of the country. Give us a call or stop by so that you will have the right plants in the right place and will know how to take care of them. It is time to move on to your September to-do list: » It is essential that you do your walk around. Look up, down, and all around, and then make notes of what you want to change or try again next year. By now, you know what has done well and what hasn’t, so you can get a better idea of how to do your planting next time. » Don’t be embarrassed about plant failures. It happens to everyone. The flowers on my front porch have struggled because of birds, bugs, and critters. Our front yard is still trying to recover from having our field

lines replaced. Gardening is a learning process, and failing is a part of growing. » September is a good month to plant, but it tends to be dry. That means you will need to water, and sprinklers are NOT adequate for establishing trees and shrubs. » One of the most critical chores of the fall is a good cleanup. You need to remove diseased annuals and clean up any perennials and shrubs that have had fungal problems. Remove leaves as they fall to keep those insects and diseases from coming back next year. » Did you grow veggies this year? How did it go? Gardening is a learning process, so make notes about what did well and what didn’t, and remember to move your planting areas next year. It is also important to remove the plants as they die back so that any disease or insect problems are not left in the soil. » You can collect seeds from annuals and perennials if you would like to spread or share your plants. You can also take cuttings from easily rooted plants like coleus and sweet potato vine. » September is a good month to divide and/ or transplant spring and summer flowering perennials. » Transition your containers to fall with cool season color like mums and pansies. Dump planters that are not cold hardy and store them for the winter. If you have been using the same soil for a long time, replace it with some fresh soil. This is especially important if you had problems with disease and insects. » Since I mentioned mums, let me talk about them for a bit. First of all, hybrid mums are what you see everywhere. They are not the same thing as a perennial mum. Both need to be in the ground by mid to late September if you want them to come back. The hybrids may or may not return and may not look the same if they do. They sometimes revert to breeding stock. Secondly, mums have a four to six week bloom time that is made shorter by heat and longer by cool weather. If your neighbor has a mum that lasts the entire fall, it isn’t real! Either that or they are replacing it regularly, because there are early, mid, and late season bloomers. » Plant your pansies this month. They last all winter and put on a show next spring. I encourage you to stop by and see all the wonderful things we have for fall and to ask us any questions you have about your yard. Beautiful gardens begin at Meadow View!

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month

G REEN PLANTS

are everywhere you look. It is easy to walk past a little green plant a dozen times or even a dozen years without noticing it until the day its perfect beauty demands attention. Appreciation is amplified when that little green plant makes no demands on the gardener for being exquisite. It’s hard to think of a lower maintenance plant than a sedum, though they cannot be lumped together for appearance or performance. There are dozens of sedum species and multitudes of cultivars. Some made their way to garden centers for interesting purple, golden, or variegated foliage. Many are noted for colorful flowers, including several valued for blooming late in the season when other blooming perennials have passed their peak. Those characteristics are not this sedum’s charm. While Sedum takesimense, also known as Phedimus takesimense, does offer bright yellow flowers in midsummer, and the variegated form called ‘Atlantis’ has garnered much attention of late, don’t let that distract you from the beauty of its “plain green” form. It’s all about the texture and growth habit. The densely clustered foliage makes a beautiful mound or, allowed to grow unchecked, a thick carpet of dark green. Finely scalloped margins frill the edges of perfectly formed rosettes of leaves, each a study of complex symmetry. 38

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2020

Some sedums touted as groundcovers sprawl awkwardly and grow leggy, with more stems than foliage, but that is not the case with Sedum takesimense. Sites with good drainage and adequate sunlight can yield close-knit coverage, even where it is allowed to cascade over the edge of a raised bed or container. Easily hardy through Zone 5, and evergreen in our climate, some sites say it can be grown as far north as Zone 4. It also thrives in the heat and humidity of summers through at least Zone 8 and possibly warmer zones. The plant’s one struggle is with a common name. A robust Internet search reveals most sites simply dodge the issue, deciding to label it as a stonecrop, a generic common name for all sedum. This particular sedum has been promoted at the UT Gardens for its beauty and adaptability. It is also favored by Paul Little, the owner and proprietor of Little Hill Nursery, a specialty groundcover producer in Memphis who is often referred to by his nickname “Johnny Apple-Sedum.” One day he called me to ask, “Which sedum are you telling people is your favorite? They can never remember the name!” I confessed it was Sedum takesimense and hoped that Paul, as a renowned sedum expert, would supply me with a viable common name. Instead, there was a sigh, and after a pause he asked, “Is it okay with you if

I label it ‘Carol’s Favorite’? It won’t carry this label outside the Memphis area, so learn the Latin name or make a note of it on your cell phone to share with a salesperson at your local nursery.” This useful sedum is a great candidate for the xeriscape garden or as a complementary understory for conifers. Its reliable habit contributes beautifully to container combinations, both winter and summer. Growing six to eight inches tall, it can spread as far as you will let it, but it is not aggressive, as the root system stays surprising shallow for a plant so very drought tolerant. Shallow roots make it easy to pull up where it is not wanted. Those pieces will transplant readily to new sites in your garden or are easily shared with gardening friends. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit utia.tennessee.edu/ state-botanical-garden. Photo by C. Reese, courtesy UTIA

Custom Closets - Answers to 5 Common Questions

W

HETHER IT’S a new house or a home undergoing a few renovations, most Knoxville-area homeowners are choosing to invest in a custom master closet so they don’t have to search through an overstuffed, disorganized closet again. Tailored Living of Knoxville, a local provider of whole-home organization, works closely with area homeowners to design a closet that meets their needs and style. If you’re thinking about a new closet, kitchen pantry, or home office, here are five of the most common questions homeowners ask Tailored Living design consultants: 1. How much does a new closet cost? Our products range in price, depending on the color, accessories, and decorative elements you choose, as well as the size of the space. For example, selecting a white finish will cost less than a dark, wood-grain finish, and an off-the-floor system will be more economical than floor standing. Tailored Living works with you to stay within budget and create a system that meets your needs, lifestyle, and wallet. 2. What type of material to you use? All of Tailored Living’s products are made of high-quality materials and designed with expert craftsmanship to create a long-lasting system. Shelving and panels are made with industrial-grade laminated composite. The

custom shelving and cabinetry has a 3/4inch thermo-fused laminate. This thick finish provides strength and durability. Because it’s laminated, Tailored Living offers a variety of finishes and textures that are not available with solid wood. 3. Do your systems mount to the wall or sit on the floor? To ensure the best stability to stand up to everyday wear and tear, Tailored Living mounts all its systems to the wall. Some cabinets are designed to be off-the-floor, while others are designed to the floor with crown molding to look like a piece of furniture. Your design consultant will discuss these options with you. 4. Will updating closets and storage

areas increase the value of my home? As most real estate agents will tell you, maximizing the functionality of a closet and other storage areas definitely increases the value of a home. When perspective homebuyers see a customized storage area, they can envision their own clothes or belongings in that space. Adequate storage space is essential, and well-organized closets are extremely valuable. 5. How long does it typically take to install? Installation times vary depending on the size of the project, but most projects are completed in a single day. If installation includes numerous rooms in the house several closets, a pantry, home office, garage cabinets, etc. - the installation may take one or two additional days. Most importantly, from the owners to each employee, Tailored Living of Knoxville maintains a sharp focus on providing excellent customer service. Call Tailored Living to help you develop beautiful organization!

UT Gardens, Jackson Fall Plant Sale Still On, But Garden Talks, Tours Canceled T HE UNIVERSITY

of Tennessee Gardens in Jackson will host the annual Fall Plant Sale in 2020; however, all indoor lectures and garden tours have been canceled. The sale will take place in the main parking area of the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center, located at 605 Airways Boulevard in Jackson. To help promote social distancing, event organizers are extending the plant sale to a two-day event. The sale will be open Wednesday, September 30, through Thursday, October 1, from 12 to 6 pm both days. The number of shoppers within the sale area will be limited, and face masks will be required. “By offering extended sale hours, we’re hoping to avoid a surge of shoppers within a short time frame,” said Jason Reeves, curator of the UT Gardens, Jackson. “However, visitors may be asked to remain in their cars if 40

the shopping area exceeds capacity. We ask for patience and understanding as we try to host our sale while observing best health and safety practices.” The sale will feature tried and true plant selections from the UT Gardens, Jackson, as well as contributions from Madison County Master Gardeners. UT Gardens’ staff and Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and direct shoppers to plants that will be the best fit for their sites. Plant pots and garden art handmade by local Master Gardeners will also be available for purchase. The UT Gardens accepts cash or check payments. No electronic payments will be accepted. At one time, proposals were made to expand the Fall Plant Sale to include elements typically featured at the canceled Summer Celebration Lawn and Garden

Show. However, ongoing concerns for the health and safety of employees and guests led event organizers to forego those plans. For more information on the two-day Fall Plant Sale, call 731-425-4751, visit the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center website at westtn.tennessee.edu or the UT Gardens, Jackson Facebook page. Say Goodbye to Bad “Fur” Days Let the Professional Groomers at Ms. C’s Transform Bad “Fur” Days Into Great “Fur” Days

AVE YOU E VER had a bad

hair day? Well, your dog can have a bad “fur” day, too. Why risk it? Professional grooming has many advantages. Ms. C’s recommends professional grooming for your dog at least every six weeks. Dogs’ uneven toenails can scratch floors and furniture or, worse yet, your legs. Hair and dirt in ear canals can cause infection. Professional groomers have the proper tools to remove matted hair, clean waxy/ hairy ears, and file toenails while providing a classy haircut. Groomers can also identify and remove parasitic infestations such as fleas and ticks that might transmit diseases to people. They recognize signs such as ear infections, lumps and moles, and possible skin cancer, referring owners to their family veterinarian. A professional groomer is experienced in performing tasks that you can’t and to recognize other conditions that an untrained but well-intentioned person

might miss. Reading your dog ’s sign language is imperative to assuring a pleasant, fun grooming experience. At Ms. C’s, we do not engage in assembly line grooming. We provide rest time and cuddles during the process, but dogs should be at the salon only a couple hours and not all day. And because we have many geriatric dog clients who have their lost vision and hearing, patience is the key. Patience builds trust in your dog. Trust is vital in providing a great grooming experience for your four-legged kid. Each dog is an individual with their own needs. Give John a call today to discuss overcoming your dog’s bad “fur” days.

A Moment of Kindness and a Recurring Smile

O

NE OF THE MOST impor-

tant aspects of volunteering at Random Acts of Flowers is that the volunteers get to spend their time doing something that can give a complete stranger a smile and an emotional boost. This not only occurs when the volunteer delivers the Random Acts of Flowers’ created bouquet to an individual in a healthcare facility; but, in addition, during the next several days, every time the recipient looks at the flowers, they happily recall the personal moment of kindness that the flowers represent and have another emotional boost knowing someone cares for them. This recalled and recurring happiness not only positively impacts the recipient, but their family and friends, too! One of our recipient’s family members said, “Thank you for the beautiful bouquet that was delivered to my husband this week at Park West Hospital where he underwent surgery. Your thoughtful act of sharing brightened and not only lifted his spirits, but all of our spirits during his stay in the hospital. Thank you for this wonderful service you provide for our community.” It is these moments of kindness, encouragement, and emotional support that 42

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2020

propels and sustains our volunteers to work so hard and so happily - collecting and preparing donated flowers, creating the individual bouquets, and delivering the re-purposed, upcycled bouquets to healthcare facilities. It is an effort that makes all of those involved in the process smile. Whether they are preparing the flowers, creating an arrangement, delivering a bouquet, or they are the recipient or the recipient’s family and friends – everyone gets a recurring emotional boost from the simple act of providing someone in a local healthcare facility with recycled flowers, encouragement, and a moment of kindness. If you want to support Random Acts of Flowers and help us make an impact and have your own recurring smile, please consider being a recurring donor. You can make a recurring donation on our website at www. RAFKnoxville.org, call us at 865-633-9082, or email us at Mick@RAFKnoxville.org.

Putting the “Customer” Back Into “Customer Service” W

B Y TO M I R M E N

A L L K N O W how to pronounce it, and most every small business owner includes it in their company’s advertisements and marketing materials, but unfortunately, very few entrepreneurs truly embrace it. But those that do experience a level of success that makes them the envy of their peers. Genuine customer service is more of a personal philosophy than a catch phrase. It’s a core belief that everyone in the organization embraces. It means that your spoken word is more valuable than another person’s written contract. It means that your clients trust that you place their interest ahead of your own. It means going the extra mile. It also means that you don’t promise your customers a 100% effort, substitute a 70% effort, and hope that they don’t notice the difference. It doesn’t mean that you’re perfect either or that you won’t make mistakes. But it does mean that you own your company’s mistakes and, that as owner, accept full responsibility.

Genuine customer service is more of a personal philosophy than a catch phrase. It’s a core belief that everyone in the organization embraces. It means that your spoken word is more valuable than another person’s written contract. You don’t place the blame on anyone else. In today’s competitive marketplace, many entrepreneurs may feel that they cannot afford to provide the high level of customer service that will truly differentiate them from their competitors. The fact is, you can’t afford not to.

The financial reality of poor customer service is that poor customer service costs far more than great customer service. The cost of returns, rework, multiple customer visits, time wasted, etc., not to mention a dissatisfied customer who freely shares their negative experience with countless others, is far greater than the cost of doing it right the first time. And here’s another reality. Great customer service will probably cost you far less than you might have imagined. Why? Because mediocrity is so pervasive in today’s society that simply doing what you promised to do is often perceived by customers as great customer service.

Allie Colleen Talks Glass Ceilings, Country Music, and Making It Without a Famous Parent’s Help

M

BY RANDY PAT TERSON,BOOMEROCIT Y.COM

AYBE YOU’VE HEARD of her. She’s an up-and-

coming country artist, working hard to bust country music’s glass ceiling. And though she comes from a strong country pedigree (to find out more about this, watch the video of this interview on www.boomerocity.com), she has valiantly chosen to work hard to succeed on her own merits. After discussing her recent bout with COVID-19, Allie told me a bit about herself. “I’m Allie Colleen. I was born and raised in Oklahoma. That’s a lie. I was born here in Nashville and back to Oklahoma when I was like four or five. So I grew up in Oklahoma. I moved to Nashville at 17 when out of high school to go to Belmont University, where I got a degree in songwriting and music, business, whatever that means. It was awesome. I loved it. I really enjoyed my time at Belmont. I graduated in May of 2018. I got married in October of 2018. And my husband and I have just kind of been on the road since then. We released music for the first time - I believe it was July of 2019. We just kind of had our year of music out. We have five songs out right now, two as of recent, and those kinds of things. So we’ve just been figuring that out and just loving every single moment of it.” When I asked Allie about country music’s glass ceiling and her experience with it, she replied, “I’ve had this conversation a couple times, and it’s so interesting, because there’s really only, I’d say, a seven or eight year gap between when women were killing it in 2000 country and even 2000 pop. It was almost like women are on top of everything - between Reba and Carrie Underwood - always keeping her up, you know, keeping her name high. All of those female artists that came out of the 2000s. I felt like it was booming back then. I grew up on predominantly female country seniors. “I don’t know what’s happened between then and now. New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on September 4

T

HE ARTS & CULTURE Alliance

is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from September 4-25. A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, September 4, from 5 to 7 pm to which the public is invited to attend at 75 people at a time. All visitors to the Emporium are asked to wear a mask and maintain physical distancing guidelines. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Robert Felker and Allen Monsarrat: Magic in Everyday Life in the Main Gallery

Robert Felker Robert Felker and Allen Monsarrat paint recognizable subjects, drawn from the world around them, often featuring scenes of Knoxville or other travels. For both artists, the play of light in a chosen scene is a priority and highlights their adeptness within each artist’s Allen Monsarrat chosen medium. Strong compositions draw viewers in; Felker and Monsarrat’s brush work is markedly different, providing a contrast between the two artists’ unique approach to painting. Felker has a BFA in Media Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York City, where he studied painting and illustration. He paints full-time, focusing on personal work for exhibition and commissions. He also pursues public art opportunities, recently completing the Clinch Avenue Firefly Mural for the City of Knoxville and the Bijou Theatre’s 111th Anniversary Commemorative Mural. Monsarrat does fine art painting, which has developed into a concentration on representational work, including photorealism (paintings intended to look like photographs). Monsarrat began working in pastels in 2018 to counter his tendency towards too much realism.

David A. Johnson: The Standard Knitting Mill: A Love Letter in the Balcony The Standard Knitting Mill is an old garment factory that sits empty on the west side of the Parkridge neighborhood. In its David A. Johnson heyday, it produced one million underwear garments per week, employing more than 3,500 Knoxvillians. David A. Johnson, a former photojournalist, lives just two blocks from Standard Knitting Mill and spent more than three years documenting the abandoned factory and producing more than 1,400 images. His new exhibition explores the tarnished beauty of the Standard Knitting Mill. Christopher Mitchell: Film Photographs Printed from a Personal Darkroom in the Balcony Artist statement: I believe in conversations. I often reach out to strangers because I am interested in meeting someone new. In this way, photography can act as a form of dialogue: A picture in Christopher exchange for some Mitchell shared knowledge about everyday life. I use my photography to return to a space that is rooted in real conversations happening in real places. The places I am drawn to are usually overlooked and not frequented as much: A laundromat or a diner, a train station or an elk lodge. A version of Americana that is less about the iconic and more about ways of life that no longer exist or are on the cusp of disappearing altogether. I want my body of work to preserve an otherwise ephemeral moment, to slow down time, and, ultimately, to say thank you for letting me take your picture. Ryan-Ashley Anderson: Linked in the Display Case Ryan-Ashley Anderson will showcase a series of pieces featuring links that are created with unexpected materials in unexpected ways. Artist statement: The foundation of Ryan-Ashley my work is exploAnderson ration and self-expression. As a jewelry-maker and artist who

loves fashion and textile design and draws inspiration from architecture and pattern, I am in a constant state of curiosity and discovery. I ask myself questions such as “how can I use this technique in an unexpected way?” and “how can I push this material further?” My mixed media jewelry incorporates pre-fabricated textiles, textile strips I have created by stitching beads together, leather, cord, rope, and metal. Tracye Sowders: Sheltered Wanderlust in the Atrium Tracye Sowders is a prolific painter in various media including watercolor, oils, pen and ink, alcohol inks, and oil pastels. She Tracye is also a calligrapher, hand Sowders quilter and needle worker, illustrator, and pianist. Her original watercolors, oils, and quilts are in private collections all across the United States, Australia, Canada, Scotland Wales, Ireland, England, and New Zealand. Birds of Seven Islands by Ken Jenkins, Ron McConathy, and Clay Thurston on the North Wall To promote the awareness of Seven Islands State Birding Park as a premier birding destination, this Ken exhibition features a Jenkins selection of images from among the more than 200 species of birds that have been sighted at the Park. The photographers, Ken Jenkins, Ron McConathy, and Clay Thurston, represent the finest nature/wildlife photographers in the Knoxville region, and their art is a reflection of the beauty that is on display at Seven Islands Park on a daily basis. The Park encompasses 46 acres along the French Broad River in Knox County, approximately 19 miles east of Knoxville. This peninsula of land features more than eight miles of nature trails, rolling hills, and views of the Smoky Mountains. Songbirds, hawks, and waterfowl may be seen along the meadow trails, and several old barns are a favorite refuge for Barn Owls. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public on Wednesdays from 9 am to 5 pm and other days (Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm) by appointment only. For more information or to schedule a visit to the exhibitions, call 865-523-7543 or visit www. knoxalliance.com.

Fun in the Sun: 5 Things You Should Know to Ride a Watercraft

I

N THIS NEW era of staycations

and social distancing, there has been a heightened interest in outdoor recreational activities, especially with watersports and watercraft. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, watercraft sales are up as much as 75% compared to last year, making it one of the fastest growing activities out there. With the rise in popularity of watercraft and more boats out on the water, Sea-Doo maker BRP is offering tips to those who are ready to venture out in the open water. “The Sea-Doo life is about adventure, fun, and unforgettable experiences, and that’s as important now as it has ever been,” said Annick Lauzon, Director, Global Marketing, Sea-Doo. “More and more people are discovering motorized watersports, and they’re getting to know what experienced riders have known all along: Very few things in life eliminate stress like spending time on the open water. In fact, it’s hard to find anyone on a Sea-Doo who has a frown!” Here are five things Sea-Doo recommends before starting your adventure: 1. Check if you need a license. With the increase in watercraft popularity, more riders will be out on the water, and it’s

48

important you have all the information when traveling lake-to-lake, finding your favorite river spot, or riding in the open ocean. Each state (province) has its own rules and regulations regarding licensing and proper age to operate a watercraft. Check out the Boat U.S. Foundation or www.Boat-Ed.com to know the regulations in your region. 2. Have a good understanding of your watercraft before you hit the waves. Get to know the general functions of your watercraft. It might be obvious, but spend some time on land learning the controls and functions so you can hit the water with confidence. Sea-Doo recommends you check out your operator’s guide, know your fuel level, and understand the general best operational practices so you’re good to go before heading away from shore. 3. Be chill and remember to share the water with others. Respect everyone on the water and surroundings, and adopt a fun and safe riding style. Be mindful of signs and reminders to slow down or stay out of restricted areas. Also, keep a safe distance away from others and the shoreline. Watercraft were meant for social distancing even before it was a thing! Finally, never ride under the influence of drugs or

alcohol, as it puts everyone’s safety at risk. 4. Wear the right gear. A life jacket (aka Personal Flotation Device or PFD) is a no-brainer even if you know how to swim. For additional safety, Sea-Doo reminds riders to wear the tether cord connected to the ignition switch on your life jacket at all times. In the event you end up in the water, that tether cuts the engine power and you can get right back on. Also, you and your passenger should always wear a wetsuit bottom in neoprene for protection. And finally, take sunglasses to increase the cool factor and for protection from the sun and the elements! 5. Pay attention to the environment. Leave your playground and surroundings cleaner than you found it. Protecting nature and the outdoors is what will keep watersports and recreational activities going for decades to come. Don’t throw trash in the water or surrounding areas. And respect the animals in the area - after all, it’s their home. By following these tips, watercraft riders will not only be able to take advantage of water fun, but get in some healthy escape therapy, recharge their metaphorical batteries, and practice social distancing to create great memories from this unforgettable summer.

The History of Sequoyah Hills S

EQUOYAH HILLS is one of

Knoxville’s most premier historic neighborhoods, located just off Kington Pike a few miles west of downtown Knoxville. The area contains a number of impressive examples of mid-20th century residential architecture, with houses designed by prominent locally and nationally recognized architects. Sequoyah Hills is largely associated with two real estate entrepreneurs, E. Vernon Ferrell and Robert L. Foust. Ferrell is associated with the development of Cherokee Blvd and Scenic Drive, and Foust is associated with the development of the Talahi subdivision. Both advertised their respective residential developments as utopian neighborhoods where the Knoxville elite could escape from the congested city life. In the early 1920s, E. Vernon Ferrell, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, organized the Sequoyah Hill Company. Ferrell purchased a large tract of land and, in order to connect his real estate holdings, he built Cherokee Boulevard and improved an already existing dirt road that would become Scenic Drive. By 1924, five houses had been constructed along Scenic Drive, and more than 50 homes had been sold by the end of the 1920s. Ferrell advertised modern conveniences that included paved streets,

entrance pylons, and a small neighborhood park called Papoose Park. Improvements featured attractive stonework and ironwork that inspired Cherokee folklore and the Art Deco design movement. In 1979, the Talahi Improvements were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today Sequoyah Hills continues to inspire residents and visitors with beautiful residential architecture, popular public parks, and a greenway along Cherokee Boulevard.

Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

Everyday Heroes may purchase up to six 50

professional landscaping, storm and sanitary sewers, city water, and electric lighting. Ferrell also strategically built a unique sales office that was designed as a reproduction of a miniature English cottage-style residence. He also designed the attractive entrance to the neighborhood at Kingston Pike, and the iconic arch and pillars made of Tennessee marble have been welcoming residents and visitors for almost 100 years. In 1926, Robert Foust, a partner in the Knoxville real estate firm Alex McMillan Company, purchased 100 acres of land in the heart of Sequoyah Hills. He named his new subdivision “Talahi,” which means “standing oak forest” in Cherokee. The subdivision plan called for curved paved streets, professional landscape design, underground utilities, decorative gateposts, and large lot sizes. Between 1927 and 1929, Foust built a number of landscape features, including two fountains,

$39 one-day admission tickets to Dollywood Theme Park as part of the program. Additionally, they can receive rates as low as $129 per night at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa. Dollywood officials also are extending another popular offer that asks the age-old question, “Why do kids get to have all the fun?” Thanks to the Everyone Pays Kids Price promotion, anyone who purchases a regular one-day admission online beginning now can do so at the kids’ ticket price. This ticket also is valid through September 21. To add to the value of the Everyone Pays Kids Price promotion, each ticket purchased as part of the offer includes a Dollywood refillable drink mug. The mug is valid for unlimited $.99 cold refills through January 2, 2021. It is a great value for everyone looking to squeeze a little more fun out of the summer months. Who says you can’t be a kid again?

Dollywood officials also recently made operational adjustments to the park’s current visit protocol by removing the reservation requirement for guests. The move is in response to favorable feedback from guests and the confidence of the park’s management team in being able to continue providing a satisfying experience for guests. There are still plenty of great memories to be made during Dollywood’s 35th anniversary season. Dollywood’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana (September 25 through October 31) features Great Pumpkin LumiNights presented by Covenant Health, while the season concludes with the 12-time winner for Best Theme Park Christmas Event, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana, November 14 through January 2, 2021. much joy - but also its fair share of frustrations. As many moms know, one of the toughest parts about having children is how it can change your body in unwelcome ways. Common post-partum concerns include lax abdominal skin, diastasis recti (abdominal muscle weakness and separation) and genito pelvic concerns. Sometimes these changes can be reversed with a tincture of time, lifestyle modifications, exercise, and proper nutrition. In many cases, these concerns are slow to improve and may be permanent.  Fortunately, Southeastern Dermatology has acquired the state-of-the-art technology necessary to target these concerns. We have combined Votiva with EvolveTite and EvolveTone, which are nonsurgical, no downtime procedures, into a customized package that we call “Redefine Mom.”   Votiva is the industry’s first system indicated for sexual dysfunction and pelvic floor strengthening. It is a safe and effective treatment for common feminine health concerns after childbirth, such as stress incontinence, dryness, and discomfort during intercourse, and also enhances tightness, muscle tone, and external appearance. These benefits are achieved through the gentle application of radiofrequency energy both internally and externally. For the Redefine Mom package, we utilize EvolveTone and EvolveTite to target lax abdominal skin and help restore abdominal muscle tone. EvolveTite works by using radiofrequency technology to apply volumetric heat to the skin’s subdermal layers. The radiofrequency technology ensures the heat is delivered uniformly, so no area of the application is over or under treated. EvolveTone uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate muscles (EMS) and cause involuntary contractions. Your muscles contract in a way that replicates a workout - sweat not required. The benefit is enhanced abdominal muscle tone and may even help correct diastasis recti.
