IS a challenging month with winter weather still lingering and cloudy days more the norm than sunshine. But one bright spot this month is the celebration of Valentine’s Day. It’s a day we can make plans for a special night out and have a wonderful dinner or get Photo by D. Roberts Photography away to a favorite warmer location. I know your Valentine will appreciate any plans you took the time to make happen or any special gift you chose just for him or her, like my husband who sent me an early Valentine. It was a personalized gift of a sentiment he wrote himself and had etched on a large acrylic heart that now sits on my dresser. The personal touch to a gift like this is what is cherished and remembered for a lifetime. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we want to highlight not only gifts that will make your Valentine feel special, but we want to highlight events and activities that can be enjoyed. Whether you are looking for a gift that pampers like a day at the spa, something that sparkles and glitters, 4

IRST LAUNCHED in 1957, Clinton Glass quickly earned a reputation throughout East Tennessee as a trusted glass supplier for residential and business customers. Today Clinton Glass has become the area’s number one supplier of frameless shower glass. Under the careful leadership of co-owners and husband and wife team, Greg and Kim Stowell, and their dedicated staff, Clinton Glass has installed more than 10,000 custom showers. What is even more impressive is the fact that Clinton Glass has become the only frameless shower glass company in East Tennessee that has its own fabrication facility where shower glass is fabricated and tempered in-house. Further, because all work is performed by their employees and not subcontractors, Clinton Glass offers a truly turnkey customer experience you are not likely to find anywhere else. Homeowners hoping to create that showroom quality look and feel in their home’s bathrooms need not look any further than Clinton Glass. Their allnew showroom located within their state-of-the-art, on-site fabrication facility on Middlebrook Pike features 27 full-sized shower displays designed to inspire you. Unlike many showrooms you might visit today, this one-ofa-kind showroom is more of a discovery center, where you will see all of the possibilities that exist when creating your home’s new designer-inspired, custom glass shower enclosure. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to bring you this interview with Greg and Kim Stowell.

EK: Tell our readers a little bit about Clinton Glass’ 63 year history. Greg: There have been only three owners since 1957. The store has transformed over time from a paint and glass store, to a commercial glass company, and now a residential shower glass specialty store. EK: Your transition from commercial glass installation to custom shower glass was a major step. What did you see in your marketplace that inspired such a bold move? Kim: During the recession, commercial glass sales dropped off, and home remodeling picked up as people decided to stay in their homes. As the demand increased, we grew with it, and now we install about 200 custom showers per month in East Tennessee. EK: More than 10,000 bathrooms later, what role has your in-house design services played in your overall success? Greg: We hear frequently that we can design showers that other companies have difficulty with. That comes from measuring and installing thousands of showers. We’ve developed systems and capabilities to make the process go smoothly for our clients. EK: After a homeowner first contacts you, describe the typical customer experience. Kim: One of the best ways for customers to start the process is by visiting our showroom. Here they get to see, touch, and even step into the many different shower displays. Customers usually have an idea Photos by D. Roberts Photography

how they want their shower to look and feel, but a visit can offer them a chance to confirm or improve their design. EK: At what stage of new construction or remodeling is it best for a homeowner to first contact you? Greg: We like to talk to clients in the planning stage. Some glass companies think that’s too early and that you should only call them after the tile is complete. Contacting us early helps avoid any possible design concerns before they are constructed in the field. EK: While a growing number of companies are outsourcing their work, Clinton Glass continues to rely only on its own employees. Why should that be important to your customers? Kim: Our customers appreciate that our estimators and installers are all experienced, well-trained, fully insured, trusted employees. We arrive in badged company vehicles with Clinton Glass shirts. We survey our customers, and their feedback most often includes comments on how professional and courteous we are! EK: You’ve actually taken your commitment to providing a truly turnkey customer experience to an all-new level with your new, state-of-the-art facility where you now fabricate and temper all of your own custom shower glass. Tell us more. Greg: We control the entire process inhouse, from the showroom to installation. And, much to our customer’s frequent surprise, we fabricate and temper our own glass in-house. This means we are not relying on an out-of-state glass fabricator who doesn’t know the intricacies of each job. It is wonderful having our crew handle every step, and I know our customers appreciate it! EK: Why should this be important to your customers? Kim: The biggest benefit has been quality control; we have complete control over the quality of our product! Also, with control of the glass fabrication, we have greater

flexibility on the installation schedule. This has kept our installation lead times consistent. EK: Tell our readers about your new inspirational showroom. Greg: We have 27 full size showers on display in nearly every configuration imaginable. If you’re in the planning stages, come by and look, and you will get some great ideas. We frequently hear, “I never thought of that” or “I’m a very visual person, and now I know what our shower is going to look like.” EK: What is the best way for our readers to learn more about Clinton Glass? Kim: The quickest way is our website, www. clintonglasscompany.com, or our Facebook page, which is updated a few times a week with pictures of great shower installations. Of course a showroom visit is a must. And if you ask, Greg is happy to give shop tours of our fabrication and tempering equipment! EK: In closing, is their anything else you would like to add? Greg: We appreciate our wonderful customers and just want to thank them for allowing us into their homes to help create their dream baths.

You Can Take It with You …Your Organized Closet

OUR CLOSET affects you more than you realize; after all, it is where the day begins. For most, the feeling of relaxation when entering a favorite resort is the goal for home décor. Your closet is no exception. It is such an important part of your day. If it is a welcoming, organized place, it is easy to get dressed and be out the door for what lies ahead. If clutter is the theme of your closet – along with inadequate storage – then time is wasted looking for the day’s outfit. It takes more time to coordinate the image that will impress everyone you will encounter in the coming hours when there is no order to your closet. Stress builds as the hunt is on for shoes buried under a pile of clothes, and once stress starts, you know it will only continue. The first tip of an organized closet is to have a hamper so dirty laundry is not lying on the floor. Organize your closet so you can go shopping every day in your very own store. Have shirts, pants, skirts, suits, and shoes all in their own department and neatly arranged. Grouping is the key to organization. If your favorite ensembles are grouped together,

you are limited in choices. Once you create your “store” by organizing “like with like,” it is easier to see new combinations and your wardrobe choices will increase. When traveling, packing is easy when your closet is serene and orderly. Having luggage handy, kept in the closet, makes packing quick as you go through your own personal “store” assembling everything needed for your trip. You will have more time on your trip by

is a double bill featuring the chamber opera “Beneath Suspicion” and a performance of the song cycle “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn (from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride).” The event will be held March 14-16 at 7:30 pm at Blount Mansion, located at 200 W. Hill Avenue in Knoxville. Beneath Suspicion is a one-act opera by Knoxville native composer Jesse Ayers. It is based on a true, little-known story of two daring, American women who played on prevailing gender and racial stereotypes to fight slavery by spying for the Union during the Civil War. Elizabeth Van Lew, a passionate abolitionist known around Richmond as “Crazy Bet,” is the middle-aged daughter of a recently deceased, wealthy Richmond slave owner. Upon her father’s death, she frees her family’s slaves, including a young household servant 8

recreating your organized storage at your destination. Digging through the suitcase can be unnerving; take your closet with you and spend a few minutes unpacking upon arriving at your destination. Sort “like with like” at the hotel just as in your closet. Then you know exactly where your garments are for the day, whether you’re going to a meeting or sightseeing. When choosing a design style, think of your favorite place, retail store, or destination when starting a remodel of your closet. Inspiration may come from a trip to the beach, the mountains, or travel overseas. You can take it with you and replicate your favorite experience. The modern style of Giorgio Armani in Beverly Hills or the classic mahogany look of Ralph Lauren at the Greenbrier are just two of countless possibilities. Wouldn’t it be pleasant to start each day in one of these locations… in your closet?

named Mary. Bet, recognizing Mary’s extreme intelligence, sends her to Philadelphia to a Quaker School to be educated, after which Mary returns to Richmond to work in the Van Lew home as a free woman. Mary has a photographic memory. She can memorize documents verbatim in one quick reading, as well as repeat lengthy conversations word for word. As the war breaks out, Mary is in her early 20s, Bet, her 40s. Though Richmond is the capital of the Confederacy, about half of its inhabitants are Union sympathizers. Bet, a firebrand, uses her contacts to set up a spy ring to report Confederate movements to the Union military. Her information is so reliable that her coded messages go directly General Ulysses S. Grant. This work imagines a key scene in the lives of these two women: The crisis moment when Mary must decide if she will risk her life to

undertake the daring plan she believes God has revealed to her or if she will shrink back to maintain her safety and personal freedom. Both women were inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame in the 1990s. Elizabeth Van Lew will be played by Lindsey Fuson, soprano, and Mary will be played by Denisha Pompey, soprano. “Good morning, darling, the sun has just come up. It is a beautiful morning…” So begins a letter from 1944 that 1st Lt. George W. Honts wrote his wife, Evelyn Honts, while deployed during World War II. The text to these letters has been set to music by composer Alan Smith in the song cycle “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn, from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride.” Performance will be by Elena Stabile, soprano. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 students. For more information, visit www. MarbleCityOpera.com.

Think Summer: 4 Things You Didn’t Know About Boat Shows A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

THINK

S U M M E R this winter, and start planning now for warmer days ahead that could be spent relaxing on a boat. Beginning in January, boat shows take place across the country, offering some of the hottest post-holiday deals around, with special pricing and incentives on new boat models and marine accessories – a major draw for the 142 million Americans who take to the water each year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. For those ready to plan their summer adventures on the water, boat shows are the best place to start. Explore all boating curiosities and interests, from fishing and sailing to riding personal watercraft and wakesurfing. Boat shows not only offer the unique opportunity to browse and board the latest boats and marine accessories at the best prices of the year, but also offer those looking to get started in boating a taste of the boating lifestyle during the off-season. Most boat shows offer educational opportunities and ways to get on the water, from rentals to boat clubs and more. Whether you want to fulfill that New Year’s resolution of spending more time outdoors with family and friends or you’re simply in the mood to escape the winter doldrums, Discover Boating, the national awareness program to help get people on the water, offers four reasons to visit a boat show near you this year: 1. Warm up with hot deals. Unlike auto shows, boat shows are the place 10

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2019

to buy. Hundreds of new models are available to buy right on the show floor at some of the best prices of the year, with many exhibitors offering special show pricing and other incentives. Boat shows make it easy to shop all the region’s dealers in one location, and it’s the perfect time to order a new boat to ensure it arrives by spring. 2. Navigate the boating lifestyle. You can learn the ropes of boating and take advantage of on-site training offered at little to no cost. Beginners can learn about boating, and more experienced captains are able to hone their skills. Plus, boat shows offer fun and interactive activities for the whole family, from knot-tying and boating 101 seminars to remote-control docking ponds and virtual reality boating simulators and more. Most shows also have charters, boat clubs, rentals, and boat schools for show-goers to research ways to get on the water before buying. 3. Invest in your health. In addition to the thousands of steps you will achieve from browsing the latest products, boat shows could also be an investment in your health. According to a Discover Boating survey, 72% of Americans reported feeling healthier after spending time on the water. Plus, recent research has confirmed what many boaters already know – you experience health benefits, like reducing stress, by being near, in, on, or under water and while participating in activities like boating. Learn more about the health benefits of boating by visiting www.DiscoverBoating.com/ your-brain-on-a-boat.

Knoxville Convention Center 2019 Boat Show Schedule Thursday, February 14, 2 to 9 pm Friday, February 15, 12 to 9 pm Saturday, February 16, 10 am to 9 pm Sunday, February 17, 11 am to 5 pm Show Admission General admission: $10 adults Children under 10: Free Tickets (cash only) are available at the door

4. Look for the seal of approval. When shopping for a boat at a show, online, or at a dealership, always check to make sure it is NMMA Certified. NMMA Certified boat and trailer manufacturers have been independently inspected to ensure they meet strict industry standards for safety and construction, as well as all federal regulations. Look for the NMMA Certified sticker near the helm of a boat. Visit www.DiscoverBoating.com to find a boat show near you, a list of certified boat manufacturers, a Boat Finder tool that matches your on-water interests with different boat types, plus more interactive tools and resources for getting started in boating.

Jehanne… The Story of Joan of Arc “One life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it.” – Joan of Arc

O N FEBRUARY 23RD & 24TH,

GO! Contemporary Dance Works will present Jehanne… the Story of Joan of Arc, a full length contemporary ballet, at the Bijou Theatre. A large creative effort with more than 60 dancers, five choreographers, and an expansive creative team, this one-of-a-kind ballet will capture the intensity, conflict, and resolve of this medieval teenager who was both a maiden and a warrior during a time of spiritual and political upheaval. Jehanne, which is the 15th century spelling of Joan, was scripted by Artistic Director, Lisa Hall McKee, to chronicle Joan’s life in a visual labyrinth of the medieval time period. McKee has contrasted haunting moments such as her visions, trial, and death with elaborate, ornate, and lively scenes such as the banquet hall where she meets Charles VII. “I designed the performance so all age groups could attend,” said McKee. “The portrayal of her death will be abstract, and the final scene will be directed to joy and hope in celebration of her life. It is an elaborate display of the medieval time period contrasted by stark, emotional, and empowering moments. Professional Harper Addison dances the role of Joan with incredible artistry and sensitivity. Strong, yet vulnerable. She is mesmerizing as Joan.” Show times for this inspiring and inspiriting ballet are Saturday, February 23, at 2 and 7:30 pm and Sunday, February 24, at 3 pm. Ticket prices range from $17 to $27. Pre-show Medieval Banquets will be held prior to the Saturday evening and Sunday matinee performances and include a sweet and savory feast with live medieval entertainment and an opportunity to meet Joan and the cast. GO! is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Tickets may be purchased by calling 865-539-2475 or online at www.gocontemporarydance.com.

OUR HOME’S hardwood floors were once rich a nd lu x urious looking. The first interior feature of your home that greets your guests, they made a lasting impression on everyone that visited. But years of foot traffic, an occasional accident, and the sun’s relentless UV rays have left them dull and unattractive. In fact, instead of adding to the overall appearance of your home, they now detract from its once beautiful showcase quality look. Today, instead of showing off your hardwood f loors, you strategically arrange area rugs over high traffic and damaged areas in an attempt to camouflage them. D u r i n g t h i s Va lent i ne’s mont h of February, why not fall in love with your home’s hardwood floors all over again? Consignment Success Tips

Getting the Biggest Bang for Your Buck at Next To New!

I

F YOU ARE NEW to consignment, here’s how to make the most money with your consignment goods. Consignment shopping has been growing in popularity for years, and there is money to be made with these tips on how to make the most of your consignment experience at Next To New. First, check your closet for merchandise that you no longer wear. Ask yourself, “Would I buy this again now?” If you answer no, consider selling these items yourself or donating them to charity. The condition of the item and the original purchase date are key points. You may have a terrific suit with the original tags, but if you bought it 10 years ago, today’s savvy consignment customer will likely pass it by. Before visiting your consignment store, check your items closely for any defects. A “pull here” or a “snag there” reduces your chance for success. Make sure your items are cleaned or dry cleaned as necessary. All clothing should be pressed and presented on hangars. Customers will reward you for your efforts. If you love it, just keep it. This should be an emotion-free business opportunity. Here are 10 important things to consider when consigning: 1. At Next To New, we carry all major mall brands and all boutique designers. 2. Familiarize yourself with the brands the consignment store carries. 3. Consign items in season. 4. Consign best-selling sizes: For women, it’s sizes 10-16. 5. Consign designer accessories in any size. 6. Consign popular brands or classic brands that stand the test of time. 7. Bring a minimum of 20 flawless items (no missing buttons, stains, cleaned, pressed, and ready to sell) for the store to consider. 8. Accept the truth about the market value of your merchandise. 9. Next To New markets online, on local and cable TV, in magazines, and by email. 10. Our goal is to help you make as much money as possible. Visit Next To New to learn more and to give your closet some much deserved breathing room. Our success is your success! Next To New

whatsoever,” said Lynette. “I went through a lot of apprehension for nothing. I wish I had done it sooner.” “Lynette’s comments regarding her recent dental implant procedure are common,” said Jonathan Bradshaw, DDS, founder of Heritage Family Dentistry in Farragut. “Most of our patients are pleasantly surprised by just how well their dental implant procedure went.” As a dental patient of Dr. Bradshaw myself, I have also completed a recent dental implant procedure that went better than I could ever had imagined. The procedure was virtually pain-free, with a discomfort level less than that of a flu shot. One thing I and others appreciate about Heritage Family Dentistry is their efforts to communicate with each of their patients

exactly what their procedure involves. They patiently answer all of your questions, which builds relationships and, in turn, builds trust. I and others particularly enjoy their online videos where patients describe their actual experiences. I find them both informative and comforting. I’m told that more videos will be forthcoming, but for now, I would encourage anyone who is contemplating a dental implant to go online at www.hfdsmiles.com and view Lynette’s video. If you or someone you love has one or more missing teeth, you’re not alone. More than 120 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. But does a single missing tooth really matter? In addition to impacting your appearance, self-esteem, and chewing, missing teeth can have other serious consequences. When

we chew, the roots of our natural teeth provide the necessary stimulation needed to promote the health of our jaw bones. The absence of our teeth, and the bone stimulation they provide, results in the loss of bone density. This loss of bone can impact the health of other surrounding teeth and result in even further bone loss that can change one’s facial aesthetics, often creating a sullen appearance. 5 SIMPLE TIPS FOR THE BEST BATCH OF COOKIES

DELUXE SUGAR COOKIES

S

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

HARING A FRESH BATCH of cookies with family and friends is the perfect way to warm up a wintry day. Some bakers dare to experiment with new recipes, while others stick with old favorites. Yet, even the tried-and-true recipes don’t always turn out right. Experienced bakers know how to achieve perfect cookies every time. But don’t worry! There’s no need to buy high-priced equipment or enroll in culinary school. All you need are simple tools, practical know-how, and the best tasting, highest quality natural ingredients to make cookies that will please everyone. Here are a few simple tips for delectable cookies. » Invest in a food scale. Baking is all about chemistry. For consistent results, use a simple food scale. This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. The rule of thumb is that every cup of white flour equals five ounces, though some sources may recommend less. Many recipes indicate required ounces or grams. The right amount of flour is needed to absorb the ingredients and to provide correct ratios with raising agents. » Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough for an hour or more prevents cookies from over-spreading while baking. Time spent in the fridge also gives ingredients the chance to gel, enhancing flavors, especially if you’re using spices. Another upside: You can 18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2019

prepare dough ahead of time and chill until you’re ready to bake, making prep easier. » Use parchment paper. No need for pricey baking sheets. Parchment paper on cookie sheets does wonders for preventing overdone cookie bottoms. » Hone your decorating strategy. You don’t need a lot of skill to achieve beautiful results. Start with good dough (properly chilled) and use a variety of cookie cutters to achieve perfect shapes. Cool cookies before applying icing or toppings so they won’t melt or run. Use Watkins Assorted Food Coloring with no artificial dyes for the best results in colorful Pinterest-worthy treats. Creating effects with a variety of toppings (candies, sprinkles, icing, etc.) will make it look like you spent days in the kitchen. » Use high-quality ingredients. Always start with high-quality, fresh ingredients for the best taste and appearance. Make sure your flour and raising agents, like baking powder or baking soda, haven’t sat in your cupboard too long, losing their effectiveness. Using the best quality flavorings like Watkins All Natural Baking Vanilla Extract results in scrumptious cookies. Unlike ordinary vanilla, which has a higher alcohol content, Watkins All Natural Baking Vanilla is made with flavor-rich Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. It is a double-strength vanilla, so you need only half the normal amount in your baking. Following is a classic recipe to delight your family and guests.

Cookies » 1 cup butter or margarine, softened » 1 cup sugar » 1 egg, beaten » 1 teaspoon Watkins All Natural Baking Vanilla Extract » 1/2 teaspoon Watkins Pure Almond Extract » 2 tablespoons milk » 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour » 1 teaspoon baking powder Frosting » 4 cups powdered sugar » 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened » 3 to 4 tablespoons milk » 1 to 2 teaspoons Watkins Pure Orange, Watkins Pure Lemon, or Watkins Pure Peppermint Extract, to taste » Watkins Assorted Food Coloring Directions Cookies: Combine butter, sugar, egg, extracts, and milk in large bowl. Stir in flour and baking powder; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm (about 2 hours). Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll dough one third at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack. Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

HANKS TO con-

tinued advances in medical technology, many common dental conditions can be successfully treated in a more gentle and minimally invasive way. Laser dentistry, which combines the energy of laser, air, and water, allows dentists to perform a variety of dental procedures. Virtually painless, the Laser allows your dentist to use minimal and, in some cases, no anesthetics – a welcome change for many patients. The Laser is extremely effective in delivering more immediate, in-office tooth whitening results than most other whitening systems available today. Research has shown that the laser is capable of delivering four to six shades of whitening in as little as two minutes. Another exciting application for the Laser is its use in the treatment of reducing and managing oral and maxillofacial (jaw and face) pain. With 39 million adults experiencing orofacial pain, the Laser provides a therapeutic and non-invasive way to treat pain in as little as 10 minutes. Laser is also helpful in providing non-surgical periodontal treatment, which is typically a regimen of scaling and root planing. Even patients who exercise the best hygiene care can struggle with periodontal disease, which can impact other areas of their health and wellness. Laser offers patients minimally invasive options that can deliver better outcomes than other traditional methods. In addition, Laser provides non-surgica l treatment for Tongue Tie in adults and kids. In addition to all of the benefits offered by Laser, we at Farragut Dental Studio offer our patients a superior level of dental care for the entire family utilizing the latest technology provided in the warm and welcoming environment of our state-ofthe-art studio. Winter Allergies: The Allergies You Didn’t Know You Could Have A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

W HEN TEMPERATURES

get below freezing, people with seasonal allergies to grass, tree, and weed pollens get well-deserved relief from their symptoms. But if you’re still sneezing and blowing your nose when winter descends, you might have indoor allergies. The problem for many allergy sufferers is figuring out what exactly is causing their symptoms. Why? Most allergy sufferers develop similar symptoms no matter what allergen they’re reacting to. When you have a stuffy or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing and coughing, you know you’re probably allergic to something. Beyond that, it’s hard to discover the culprit. If it’s serious enough to prompt a trip to the doctor for relief, see an allergist. “Allergists are the best-trained medical professionals to treat allergies and asthma,” said allergist Todd Mahr, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. “Much like a cardiologist specializes in heart problems, an allergist specializes in allergic diseases. Your allergist will find the source of your symptoms and treat the cause so you can feel healthy all the time.” Here are some common causes of winter, indoor allergies and tips from ACAAI on what you can do about them: » Dust mite allergy Dust mites are one of the most common indoor allergens and a year-round annoyance. Those allergic to dust mites suffer most in their own homes. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that live in furniture, carpets, and bedding and feed off the flakes of skin people shed every day. They thrive in warm, humid environments. Often you’ll notice

your symptoms immediately after vacuuming, sweeping, or dusting, when you’ve stirred up dust. Molds, pollen, pet hair, fur, or feathers can contribute to a dust allergy as well. Diagnosis and treatment: As with all the allergies in this article, your allergist will perform a skin test or blood test to determine the exact cause of your allergy and order a course of treatment that may include medications or allergy shots. Management: The presence of dust mites does not mean you have a dirty house; they’re everywhere. You can lessen or avoid your symptoms by removing the usual suspects that cause dust allergies. Choose wood floors instead of carpet, clean your house with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter, use miteproof cases on your mattresses and pillows, and wash your linens regularly in hot water. Consider installing a high-efficiency disposable filter in your HVAC system. The filter should have a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating of 11 to 13 – the higher the MERV rating the better. » Mold allergy Molds live inside and outside of your home. They can thrive in moist places like bathrooms and kitchens, and the annoying thing about molds is that many molds aren’t visible to the naked eye. As the spores become airborne, they can cause allergic reactions and worsen asthma symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment: Your allergist may have you track your symptoms over time to see where you’ve been when your allergies flare up. That will help identify the culprit. Antihistamines and decongestants can ease symptoms. Management: Wear a mask when doing yard

work, and once inside, take a shower and rinse your nose with a saline solution to remove mold spores. In the kitchen, clean up any spills or leaks quickly to prevent mold from growing. Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in areas like bathrooms and basements. Clean your garbage cans and fridge drawers. For serious mold problems, call a professional. » Pet allergy It’s a heartbreaking situation for pet lovers if they have allergy symptoms after being with their pets. Allergy symptoms can be constant because exposure can occur anywhere – in pet-friendly workplaces, restaurants, stores, school, in daycare – anywhere a pet owner has been. Diagnosis and treatment: Your allergist will perform a skin test or blood test to determine if your pet is causing your allergy symptoms. They may advise treating with nasal sprays, antihistamines, or other medications. Allergy shots are also effective in treating pet allergies, because a resistance is built up over time. Management: Avoidance is the best way to manage a pet allergy, but you don’t have to part with your furry family members. Some ways to lessen your symptoms include keeping your pet out of your bedroom, washing your hands with soap and water after petting or playing with your pet, vacuuming with a HEPA vacuum, and bathing your pet once a week. Once you know the cause of your symptoms, you can conquer the allergy. It’s time to take control of your allergies and asthma and start enjoying life again. It’s time to find an allergist. To find an allergist in your area, use the Allergist Locator tool on the ACAAI website at www.acaai.org.

Celebration of Love

T

H E “ C E L E B R AT I O N O F LOVE” began in the 5th Century AD

with St. Valentine. In the 1700s, Cupid, the God of love, with all his myths and legends initiated our current tradition of sending Valentines on February 14th. Valentine’s Day is a time to recognize that love takes on many forms. Why not celebrate Valentine’s Day this year by making it special for your pets? Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits is celebrating the special bond with our “best friends” by offering special treats on weekends during February. Special doggy peanut butter oatmeal cookies will be served Saturday nights as bedtime treats. Homemade biscuits are given nightly, and TGIF (grilled all meat hot dogs) are popular as well. At Ms. C’s, we cherish our four-legged kids every day. During February, the love of Cupid shines upon our guests and puts cupid’s spell on us all. Following are some fun ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your pets: » Take your pet for a long walk. Play ball outside an extra 15 minutes. » Cuddle longer than usual while watching TV.

BE MY VALENTINE!

» Good brushing. During the winter months, with windows closed and heaters on, low humidity can make your dog’s skin dry and scaly. A blend of moisturizing botanicals, which include Vitamins A and E, Aloe Vera, and Oatmeal, are particularly good for your pet’s coat. » Arrange a special treat by taking him or her to doggy daycare. Instead of being home by themselves while you are at work, reserve a special day to provide your pet with time to romp and play in the big playgrounds at Ms. C’s. » Heading to the mountains to celebrate? Make reservations for your pet to stay at Ms. C’s, where they will be pampered and loved while you are away. Call 865-986-6325 for your appointment at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits today.

Zoo Knoxville Honors Legacy of Former Director, Ted Beattie, in “Heart of Africa”

commemorated the legacy of Ted Beattie, the zoo’s second executive director, by naming the central part of the African animal area in his honor. The Ted Beattie Heart of Africa was unveiled at a reception hosted by Natalie and Jim Haslam and was attended by family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Beattie and supporters of Zoo Knoxville. The surprise announcement was made in the newly-christened area of the zoo that is home to animals native to Africa and designed to give guests the experience of exploring an African forest. Heart of Africa was constructed under Beattie’s leadership and the zoo’s first modern exhibit featuring natural habitats. Ted Beattie’s brilliant marketing and promotional skills raised the zoo’s profile in the community during his tenure from 1987 until 1992, and he impressed upon the business leaders and elected officials the importance of supporting it. Under his leadership, the zoo added many new departments and gained

Lisa New and Ted Beattie

national recognition for its conservation work. “Ted laid the foundation for Zoo Knoxville to become a modern and forward-thinking zoo,” said Lisa New, President and CEO of Zoo Knoxville President. “What he put in motion 30 years ago was the zoo’s evolution into a conservation organization working to save animals from extinction on an international level.” “Ted Beattie inspired the community to share his vision of what our zoo could be,” said Jim Haslam. “He set high goals, saying we should be a great zoo doing extraordinary things. Today our remarkable zoo has achieved his vision.” Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated

In the past year, The Moody Blues released “Days of Future Passed Live” and an expanded 50th anniversary edition of “In Search of the Lost Chord,” both through Eagle Rock. “I’m always so thrilled to have the opportunity to tour, particularly at this time in my career when no one knows what the future holds,” said Hayward. “I’m bringing my songwriting guitars from home on the road with me, so the gigs will have the feel and sound of my music room along with the vibe I was feeling as I wrote the songs. I look forward to singing and playing new songs and old songs, particularly Forever Autumn, which I only get to perform in my solo show, and also to tell the real stories behind all the songs and the events that surrounded them at the time. “It’s a joy to share a stage with such wonderful young and inspiring talents as Mike Dawes, one of a new generation of brilliant young guitar masters and worth the price of admission alone, and Julie Ragins, a truly exceptional musician and singer. She and I have shared stages all over the world for many years, loving the music we play, both with the Moody Blues and solo. I look forward to seeing you on the road!”

Plan Today to Save Taxes Tomorrow A B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

RE YOU READY for

a surprise? You could be in a higher tax bracket when you are retired and reach age 70 than when you are working at age 60. On the face of it, it seems counterintuitive, since surely you would have less income Yvonne Marsh, in retirement. But for retirees who CFP®, CPA have built a nice nest egg in their taxdeferred retirement plans, the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) dictated by the IRS at age 70 1/2 can create enough taxable income to push them into a higher tax bracket – and create a Medicare premium surcharge to boot. Tax planning can save the day! The window of time between retirement and age 701/2 is a golden opportunity to convert a portion of your taxable retirement accounts into tax-free Roth IRAs. Your taxable income may drop a significant amount in the year after you retire, especially if you defer Social Security and delay withdrawals from your taxable retirement accounts. Structured correctly, you may be in the 12% or 22% bracket and may even be in the 0% capital gains bracket for some period, too. Yes, you’ll owe tax on the dollar amount you convert to Roth IRAs, but by measuring how much you can convert and still stay in the lower brackets, you pay less tax to create this forever tax-free asset. Once you’ve held the Roth for five years, you can withdraw money tax-free (and it’s not counted in the Medicare surcharge calculation, either). Or just leave the account to grow, since Roths are not subject to RMD withdrawal requirements. Plan ahead for this strategy, because you’ll need a combination of cash and brokerage accounts for lowtax cash flow to live on while you’re using your low tax bracket years for taxable Roth conversions. Remember, even if you do need to sell appreciated stocks or mutual funds, you may owe no (or minimal) capital gains tax in these lower brackets. Even if you didn’t need another reason to act, I’ll still give you one: Taxes are on sale under our new tax code! Through 2025, tax rates are probably the lowest of your lifetime. A multi-year Roth IRA conversion strategy is complicated, so don’t go it alone. Give us a call to arrange a complimentary meeting.

Recreated by Oscar-winning Designer Highlight Biltmore’s New Exhibition

F A S H I O N S worn by the Vanderbilts recreated by Oscarwinning designer, John Bright, will fill the grand rooms of Biltmore House when Biltmore’s newest exhibition, A Vanderbilt House Party – The Gilded Age, opens February 8 and runs through May 27. In collaboration with Biltmore curators, Bright and his team at Cosprop, London meticulously recreated fashions favored by the Vanderbilts and their guests at turn-of-the-century celebrations known as house parties. Throughout his career, Bright has received 12 Academy Award nominations and a win for Best Costume Design in 1985 for the Merchant Ivory adaption of “A Room with a View.” The film starred Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Daniel Day-Lewis. An Immersive Experience “This exhibition is unlike any we’ve ever done before,” said Leslie Klingner, Biltmore’s curator of interpretation. “You will get a sense of what life was truly like at Biltmore.” That sense of the Gilded-Age era is enhanced by a new Premium Audio Guided Tour. This component of the exhibition combines innovative 360 degree sound techniques with stories told from the perspectives of those who lived and worked at Biltmore in the early 1900s. This creates a unique, immersive audio-visual experience for guests. Klingner and Ellen Rickman, Biltmore’s director of museum services, traveled between London and Asheville during the course of two years to work with Bright to recreate the Vanderbilt wardrobe, researching fashion magazines of the era and studying archival photography and portraits from Biltmore’s collection in great detail in order to create the designs found in the exhibition. “To bring these photographs that have been in black and white for more than a century 28

into vivid, living color representations has been incredible,” said Klingner. Among the artwork, tapestries, and antiques in Biltmore House and the Vanderbilt collection, there are few pieces of clothing from the Gilded Age-era. Clothing tends to deteriorate through the years. “This exhibition is like we’re replacing a piece of the collection that was missing,” said Dini Cecil Pickering, great-granddaughter of George Vanderbilt who was Biltmore’s founder. Biltmore and Bright This is not the first time Biltmore and Bright have teamed up. The collaboration dates back to when the estate began making plans to display a selection of costumes Bright created for the wildly popular PBS series “Downton Abbey.” Biltmore hosted the premiere showing of Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times in 2015. The exhibition then traveled to several U.S. cities. A Vanderbilt House Party is included in Biltmore daytime admission. The new Premium Audio Guided Tour is free only with online ticket purchases at www.biltmore. com or can be purchased at Biltmore for an additional fee. Guests visiting the estate may also tour the estate’s gardens, explore hiking and biking trails, dine at one of seven restaurants, and spend time at Antler Hill Village & Winery. The Winery offers complimentary tastings from among more than 20 of Biltmore’s handcrafted award-winning varieties.

Additionally, Biltmore’s winemaker has created a special red dessert wine, Mariporta, for the new exhibition. Stay Over, Just Like a Gilded Ageera Guest of the Vanderbilts Just as the Vanderbilts’ guests did, guests today may extend their visit with an overnight stay at one of Biltmore’s lodging properties. Both The Inn on Biltmore Estate and Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate are offering A Vanderbilt House Party packages throughout the exhibition’s run. Kelly D’s Upstairs at the Mansion will open for business on Monday, February 4, after her Grand Opening on Saturday, February 2. Music Director Allcott Returns as Carbon Fiber Cellist to Open 2019 ORCMA Concerts

Cumberland Piano Trio

T HE

OAK RIDGE Civic Music Association – home of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, Chorus and Chamber Music Series – continues its 74th season, Distinctly Oak Ridge, with concerts and events from February through April. “Oak Ridge and Oak Ridgers are unique, and ORCMA’s concerts must meet a standard of excellence and innovation for both long-time listeners and new listeners,” said Dan Allcott, Music Director. Allcott’s Cumberland Piano Trio performs February 9 at 7:30 pm at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church and will introduce the audience to innovative carbon fiber string instruments. “The term ‘innovative’ is often used too loosely, but as we learn more and more about the demand for carbon fiber musical instruments, we begin to understand how truly innovative they are,” said Lisa Muci Eckhoff, Executive Director. “Anyone with a love of science, music, and the environment will be fascinated by this concert. We’re thrilled to feature instruments provided by Oak Ridgebased company, Pulcir Music, and to host Amit Naskar, Senior Researcher and Leader of the Carbon & Composites Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, who will join the musicians in the pre-concert talk at 7 pm.” The trio will perform music by Dmitri Shostakovich, David Baker, and Antonín Dvořák. Adult general admission to the concert is $25. Carbon Fiber Pairings is a student-friendly pre-concert dinner with taco bar and “carbon”-ated beverages, and attendees will have the opportunity to touch and “try” the carbon fiber instruments from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. Adults are $20, and youth 18 and under attend all activities free. You can sponsor a student for $10. On February 16, the all-day music festival from Rock to Bach returns. Held at the Oak 32

Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, this fun, fundraising event treats attendees to multiple genres of live music performed on two stages throughout the day. “Doors open at 10 am, and Kelle Jolly kicks off the morning performances at 10:30,” said Lois McKeever, ORCMA volunteer and event planner. “Lunch and snacks will be available for purchase onsite, and a silent auction runs from 10:30 am to 6 pm. All proceeds support the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.” Adult tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. A family ticket is available for $30. Children 5-18 years are $5, and children under five years attend free. Call 865-4835569 by February 14th to RSVP for the $50 catered Celebration Dinner with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment by Indus Tennessee. “The Big Galut(e) Klezmer Ensemble is a group we’ve wanted to present in Oak Ridge for quite some time,” said Bill Schwenterly, Chairperson of the Chamber Music Series, unique to the Greater East Tennessee region. “The five-member ensemble will wow listeners with spice and variety and will share insights into the history of Klezmer music and its instrumentation during the 7 pm pre-concert talk and throughout the performance.” The ensemble performs on March 16 at 7:30 pm at Pollard Auditorium. “Something new is always being created in Oak Ridge, and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra & Chorus capture this spirit with a regional premier of Lucas Richman’s Symphony, This Will Be Our Reply, on March 30 at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center,” said Allcott. The piece is “a call to heal the world” and is based on Leonard Bernstein’s speech “An Artist’s Response to Violence.” It will be sung in Hebrew. Anyone interested in joining the Oak Ridge Chorus is invited to contact

the ORCMA office at 865-483-5569 or via email at office@orcma.org. All are welcome. Eroica, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, will conclude this thought-provoking program. Music Director Dan Allcott will speak about the concert on Monday, March 25, at 4 pm. Contact the ORICL office at 865-481-8222 for more information. Watch for details on a concert-themed event prior to the concert. The Oak Ridge Chorus presents its final concert of the season, Bach to Broadway, on April 13 at 7:30 pm at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. Two intermissions, wine, and hors d’oeuvres complement the silent auction, with proceeds benefiting ORCMA. Adult tickets are $15. “Always an enjoyable evening, the chorus will delight you with Jesu, meine Freude, and then Broadway tunes,” said Jaclyn Johnson, Chorus Director. “This concert clearly shows the versatility of our volunteer Oak Ridge Chorus!” Allcott rounds out the 2018–2019 season with Chamber Delights & Dances, featuring Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Karen Kartal and Principal Oboist Ayca Yayman in solo spotlights. The delightful concert on April 27 at 7:30 pm at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge concludes with a year-end reception with the musicians. The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association gratefully acknowledges its audience members, volunteers, advertisers, venues, contributors, and sponsors. ORCMA is a participant in the Penny4Arts initiative, enabling youth 18 and under to attend all ORCMA concerts for free during the 2018– 2019 season. Little Engine Playhouse Expands 2019 Tour

THE LITTLE ENGINE

Playhouse Tour, presented by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, brings another delightful children’s book to life with expanded dates and new locations in 2019. Audiences will enjoy the theatrical adaptation of “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon,” which delivers a positive, antibullying message. When Molly Lou Melon starts a new school, Ronald Durkin, the school bully, makes fun of her on her very first day. He mocks her teeth, clumsiness, and small frame. With advice from her grandmother, Molly Lou shows Ronald her perceived flaws are really her talents. Molly Lou is an example of overcoming obstacles and self-acceptance. “The anti-bullying message in this book is

so important in today’s world,” said Natacha Hylton, Dollywood Entertainment Manager. “We all felt like this was a great time to expand the tour, especially with the subject matter of the selected book.” The 2019 expanded tour is made up of two actors and a stage manager. Stops at familiar children’s venues in Middle and East Tennessee, along with new areas including Memphis, as well as Arkansas, South Carolina, and Ontario, Canada, are scheduled for the tour. “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” is written by Patty Lovell, with illustrations by David Catrow. and Jonathan LeGallais, and Joshua Stewart is stage manager. How Are Your Home’s Windows Performing This Winter? B Y W E N DY H U G H E S , C O - O W N E R O F W I N D O W W O R K S

THERE

ARE FEW times during the year that demonstrate poor window performance more than winter. Drafts, cold areas adjacent to windows, and a continually recycling furnace are all reminders that our home’s windows may require replacement. Poorly fitting and low energy efficient windows allow heated and air conditioned air to escape, resulting in higher energy bills. Heating and air conditioning costs represent nearly 50% of your home’s total average energy budget, and your doors and windows account for more than 40% of your home’s heat gain and loss. Fortunately, today’s homeowner can benefit significantly from a wide range of energy enhancements to home replacement windows thanks to new, state-of-the-art manufacturing methods and advancements in technology. For two generations, our family at Window Works of Knoxville has been committed to

offering our customers the most energy efficient replacement windows available anywhere. We also offer enhanced window installation practices to ensure that your new windows will operate at their peak efficiency all year long. Not All Valentine’s Are Chocolate

in all shapes and sizes, but there are two distinct types… good and bad. While good surprises can leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for years, bad surprises can wreak all kinds of havoc and inconvenience to your life. What’s the best surprise you ever received? I can think of a few that still evoke warm memories and a smile. Several years ago, my husband called to tell me to shower and change quickly. “Wear something nice but comfortable,” he said “Don’t worry about the kids; a sitter is on her way.” A limo driver whisked me away to a spa where I was pampered with a facial and a most needed body massage! Later that evening, the same driver shuttled me and several other ladies to a secret dinner where our husbands sang love songs quartet style and prepared a fivecourse meal for us to enjoy. I was the envy

of all my friends that year, and I of course soaked up the attention! February is the time each year when we should take some time to create those lasting memories and do something extra for those we love. Dinner and a movie? Absolutely. But, don’t stop there. As a woman, I know we all love to feel special. We n e e d t h o s e occasional “over the top” surprises that spice up our marriage and make us feel cherished. Each February we get numerous requests for surprise cleanings. We’ve cleaned while the misses was at work and while the mister has been sent out for some “man time.” Everyone loves a clean house, especially when you aren’t the one doing the cleaning. If you are struggling with what to do for the love of your life, let us help. We are experts at making everything sparkle and shine and helping you create the ambience in your home that fosters those coveted warm, happy feelings.

countertops

Also, in the spirit of surprises, we have one of our own. Anyone that books a cleaning during February will get something special from our crew. Perhaps it’s an extra room cleaning or a deep-cleaned front porch. Each home is unique, but we look CO-OWNER forward to surprising John YOU and helping you Fitzwilliam surprise the one you love. Tip: If your partner is the type that needs a little help zeroing in on exactly what you want, you can shamelessly snip this article and put it on the fridge. I have even been known to leave articles open on the coffee table with portions highlighted, and it even worked… once. Give John a call at 865-567-1986 and schedule your cleaning (and surprise!) today.

We’ve invested in the training, education, and new, state-of-the-art technology and equipment, including many proprietary systems that we ourselves developed, to deliver a level of excellence that you might have thought no longer existed – whether we are cleaning your home’s carpeting or your valuable Oriental rugs. How is it that we can make this statement? That’s because of my personal commitment to either perform or supervise 100% of all work performed by Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. It’s also our unparalleled attention to every detail involved in washing your Oriental and area rugs and cleaning your home’s carpeting and upholstery. For example, did you know that Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning only uses purified water when washing your rugs and cleaning carpeting? This is important, because untreated tap water contains impurities, including trace chemicals, minerals, and chlorine, that can reduce the effectiveness of cleaning agents and remain behind as residue in your carpeting. This accumulation of impurities in your home’s rugs and carpeting prevent them from being as clean as they can be, which can result in a dull appearance on your carpeting and can actually shorten the life expectancy of rugs and carpets. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, all of our vehicles are equipped with water purification systems, and our proprietary Oriental and area rug washing boutique utilizes a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system that delivers the purest water possible. After all, clean rugs and carpeting begin with clean water. To experience the difference yourself, we are offering a special Valentine’s discount of 20% off as an added incentive to help you discover what thousands of other satisfied East Tennessee homeowners and business owners already know – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning delivers excellence. The discount is available on all Oriental and area rug washing orders received in February 2019. Certain restrictions apply. To learn more, call 865-691-5686 or visit www. superiorofknoxville.com.

What Builds Character in a Home?

Jenny Blalock

C

Owner

HANCES ARE you’d answer that

question by rattling off characteristics like hardwood floors, deep baseboards, and cheerful front porches, but those are just a small part of the total equation. They can’t imbue a house with character any more than Prada shoes can make a boorish person elegant. “Character is more of an overall feeling produced by a house – a combination of emotional and physiological responses to the surroundings,” said designer/builder Jenny Blalock. In short, it’s what makes a house feel like home. “We know what home feels like, but we don’t always know why, because most people can’t define the source of that feeling,” said Jenny. “They don’t know what to ask for when they’re designing a new home or renovating an existing one, and too often they’re disappointed with the results. In actuality, our response to a house is triggered by the way its designer shaped space, light, and order. We respond positively to certain features, such as spaces that are sheltered and repeated elements like shapes or colors, because our brains are wired to do so.” The designers of many older homes incorporated those elements into their designs, which is why we tend to think of older homes as having character. Nevertheless, Jenny doesn’t equate character with just age or style. Rather, she assists homeowners to incorporate and blend these characteristics into their own unique designs in order to create the feelings of comfort and belonging for their family members and guests. “Unfortunately, many newer homes miss that mark,” said Jenny. “They just don’t have any soul to them.” Homes became houses and started to lose their uniqueness and character when mass production reached the housing industry. Time became money, so easy-to-build rectangles and squares became the norm. Gone were elements like hand-crafted doors and cabinetry, generous use of windows, and interesting nooks. Jenny believes that natural materials like reclaimed wood and stone give a house an authenticity that look-alikes can’t match. “They have their own life, and you sense them,” she said. “They can transform the ordinary into extraordinary.” Jenny’s specialty is helping you make your dream home a reality. “Every custom built home should be a reflection of the unique needs of the family that will live there,” she said. “As families grow, they

care more about function than form. They want a home that meets their needs and lifestyle.” Jenny is there with you during each step of the process to help you refine your options that meet both your budget and your individual needs. “Your home is an investment in your

future and your family’s lifestyle, so you want it to meet your unique needs today, as well as 20 years from now,” she said. Luxe Homes & Design is there to simplify that process and to help you create a home that transforms your dream home into reality. Storage Wars: Don’t Live It in Your House

W

H I L E Y O U M A Y enjoy watching the TV show Storage Wars, it’s definitely not fun to be living a storage war! Living in your own storage war at home means you’re constantly battling for space and organization to store things, especially in your closets. Piles of shoes on the floor, shirts and sweaters thrown chaotically on a shelf, and a jumbled mess of scarves and belts on a spare hanger. And of course we all have clothes stuffed in our closet we don’t wear – we’re just hoping that someday we can fit into them again! Here are a few practical tips on being more organized and sharing a closet space with your spouse: Her Side vs. His Side Sharing a master closet is nearly impossible when a couple’s clothes are mixed together. It’s often confusing and definitely frustrating as you struggle to find your clothes. And yes, typically women need more space for their clothing and accessories. Women have tall boots, ankle-high boots, longer dresses, knee-length dresses, and purses. All these items need dedicated space in the closet. Many couples create a visual “dividing line” in their closet to clearly indicate who has what side, such as a double set of drawers in the middle if you’re sharing the space fifty-fifty, or the woman gets an

additional wall for hanging items. Avoid the Back-and-Forth Routine to the Bedroom Having drawers in your closet for socks, underwear, jewelry, and other items means you don’t have to go back and forth from the closet to the bedroom dresser. This saves you valuable time getting dressed, and you don’t wake up your spouse if he/she gets up later in the morning. New houses now have larger master closets to accommodate space for drawers. Use Vertical Storage Space If you have ceilings nine feet or higher, taking advantage of vertical storage is important. Even small closets designed with taller cabinets will provide big storage. For many older homes with lower ceilings, the standard height of the top shelf is often at just over seven feet. Today’s new homes have ceilings that are nine feet or higher. Stay on Your Side of the Closet Respecting one another’s space and belongings is key to maintaining shared closet harmony. Make an effort to keep your area of the closet tidy, and don’t let your collection of workout clothes or jeans overflow into your partner’s area. No mater the size of your closet or budget, call Tailored Living of Knoxville to give you a design that maximizes your storage space and budget!

Including drawer space in your closet saves time getting dressed, since clothing items are all in one location.

Random Acts of Flowers Knoxville Welcomes New Executive Director

ANDOM ACTS OF FLOW ERS (RAF) Knoxville

kicked off the new year with a new face in the workshop! Mick Reed officially started his role as the new Executive Director on January 2, 2019. He brings with him a rich background of education and experience that will help RAF Knoxville bloom this year and in the years to come. Prior to joining Random Acts of Flowers, Mick was an Account Executive at WATE TV/WATE.com, and before that, he had a career in banking working for both large and small banks and credit unions here in Knoxville. In addition, Mick has been active in various non-profit organizations as a volunteer, board member, and board officer. “I am honored to be able to work with the hardworking staff and the great team of dedicated volunteers here at Random Acts of Flowers to further our mission,” said Mick. “I know that delivering moments of kindness through repurposed flowers really does have an impact on recipients’ outlook, optimism, and mental health, and I am glad to be part of that.” One of lasting impressions Mick took from his initial meetings with RAF founder and CEO, Larsen Jay, was Larsen telling him that giving flowers to people in a trying situation transcends all demographics. And, he 46

has now seen this firsthand. “On my first trip out to deliver flowers, I noticed that no matter the person, their reaction was always the same – a big smile!” said Mick. As we start a new year and will soon be heading into the blossom of spring, Mick asks for your support. “Please consider supporting Random Acts of Flowers by volunteering or donating to our efforts,” he said. “You can help us deliver real moments of kindness and connection to those

in our community that most need them!” Donations can be made online at www. knoxville.randomactsofflowers.org, and donated items can be dropped off at the Random Acts of Flowers facility, located at 3500 Workman Road, Suite 101B in Knoxville. The sun is lower on the horizon, and the temperatures have dropped. Most outdoor activities have moved indoors, warm weather clothing has been put away, and our furnaces are replacing the warm air that Mother Nature was providing free of charge just a few short months ago. But is that sunshine that you welcome into your home on these cold winter days really as welcomed as you might imagine? Because the winter’s UV rays from the sun can damage your home’s furniture, draperies, carpets, and wood floors, it’s a good idea to protect your home’s interior, not to mention eliminating that annoying and blinding glare from the sun coming through your windows and glass doors, reflecting off a nearby lake, pool, or patio. Like sunglasses for your windows, Retractable Sunshades from Screens of East Tennessee can enhance your view of the out-of-doors by filtering the sun while reducing annoying and unwanted glare. Exterior mounted Retractable Sunshades provide a clean look from inside your home without affecting your interior window treatments and operate with your windows whether they are opened or closed. You can maintain your views from your living room and kitchen or opt for a complete “black out” effect in a media room. A variety of fabric types and styles can filter as much or as little light as you desire, and we offer a wide selection of options to match or complement your home’s décor and color scheme. Unlike permanent shade products, Retractable Sunshades are there only when you need them and retracted out of sight when you don’t. Usually operated by wireless remote control, motorized shades can be raised and lowered simply and easily to suit your individual needs. They also have the added feature of being operated automatically by an adjustable sun sensor or can be incorporated into many home automation control systems. Many homeowners already use Retractable Sunshades to prevent passive heat gain in the summer months by preventing the sun’s rays from reaching windows, doors, and patios, and they are a great way to keep your home cooler and more comfortable while reducing energy costs. Retractable Sunshades also offer UV protection, which can protect your home’s interior and furnishings all year-round. Whether preventing the glaring winter sun or protecting your home from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, now is a great time to call Screens of East Tennessee to receive your no-cost, no-obligation consultation and estimate for Retractable Sunshades for your home.

February in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

A

S I AM writing

this, the temperature is 68 degrees. My Lenten roses are starting to bloom, and my bulbs are up. My roses have never gone dormant so that I can prune them, and there is new growth on several of my shrubs. The warm temperatures have made the month more pleasant for humans, but it is dangerous for our plants! When it gets colder, and it will, all this new growth will be vulnerable to frost/freeze damage. In addition to the warmth, we have also had an overabundance of rainfall. This can cause problems with larger trees, especially those that were damaged by the drought a few years ago. Rootballs actually shrink when the water is so readily available, so spring storms can easily topple them. Even smaller trees and shrubs may start to lean or may even lean right over to the ground! What I am telling you is that you may

be doing some damage control this spring. Keep a watchful eye on your lawn and garden so that you are prepared. February is typically pretty miserable, but we really have no idea what Mother Nature has in store for us this year. With that in mind, here are the gardening tasks you can take on this month when we have a pretty day or two: » Do your walkaround, keeping an eye out for damage already showing. If necessary, make a note to call an arborist. Then make notes on projects that you can take on to beautify (or simplify) your yard. What needs to be pruned, moved, or removed? What needs to be divided? Are there areas that simply need to be re-done from the ground up? Visualize what you would like to see this spring, and start taking steps to make it happen. » I guarantee that weeds are sprouting

unless you are a faithful pre-emergent applicator. Keep on top of your weeding, or you will be sorry! It is critical that you identify marauders amongst your plants before they take over. Hackberry trees, privet, wild grapes, wild honeysuckle, and other weeds will camouflage themselves in your shrubs, so be vigilant against them. Pull or spray them regularly. By the way, the only way I have found to kill privet is to cut it back and paint the stump with Roundup concentrate. That stuff is the cockroach of the garden! » How is your mulch layer? If it is less than 3” deep, you may want to apply a fresh layer to help keep the soil temperature stable. This will prevent “heaving” of perennials and will protect some of those bulbs that are emerging so early. » Yes, you can prune summer bloomers. Writing this always makes me sigh, because I know what some of you are going to do. Please, please, please educate yourselves before you start! “Because this is the way I have always done it” and “because this is how my neighbor does it” is no excuse for butchery! Google pruning techniques or stop by and let us show you how to do it before you start whacking. Also, remember not to prune spring bloomers or you will have no bloomers! » If vegetable beds or new planting beds are in your plans, this is a great time to get them ready. Clear off the area and add compost to build in nutrients. Remember that you should not plant vegetables in the same place that you planted them last year, so plan for your crop rotation. If you are planning a vegetable bed for the first time, make sure that it will get a minimum of six hours of sunlight. If you have questions, please give us a call. » You can start cold weather veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage in cold frames and direct seed greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onion sets in the garden toward the end of the month. » You can also plant trees and shrubs if needed. The ground is certainly soft enough to dig! » Pansies will help make gloomy winter days more colorful if added now. You can also force stems of forsythia, quince, and pussy willow inside to brighten up your day. » Don’t forget about the birds! Keep feeders and birdbaths clean and full. When the weather gets cold, a birdbath heater will be deeply appreciated by thirsty birds. I know that many of you are going to have problems and questions in the upcoming weeks, so please feel free to call, email, or stop by to see us. We want to help you be happy with your landscape!

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Camellia B Y S U S A N H A M I LTO N , D I R EC TO R O F T H E U T G A R D E N S

C

AMELLIA IS A SHRUB

prized for its showy flowers in the South’s winter landscape and its glossy evergreen leaves that stay a deep, shiny green all year. These woody plants, which can be rounded shrubs or rangy 20-foot trees, are native to Asia. When they first started gaining in popularity in America in the 1800s, they were thought of as hothouse bloomers or the darlings of the Southern garden, because the Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica) is only cold hardy to about 10 degrees. After decades of breeding with species from South Korea and Japan, hardier varieties are making their way north, and there are plenty of camellias that perform reliably well in Tennessee. Blooms can be as large as five inches across with yellow centers or full in the center with rounded overlapping petals, much like a rose. More than 30,000 cultivars of camellia have been named and introduced according to the American Camellia Society. Depending upon selection, they can vary from blooming in the fall, winter, or spring. Plants are rated as being early flowering (prior to January 1st), mid-season flowering (January through February), and late flowering (March or later). Keep in mind that bloom time can vary depending on environmental factors in your landscape such as sun, soil condition, and water. Once in bloom, flowers can last for a period of four to six weeks, but a hard freeze can burn the blooms, thus shortening their show. Bloom colors include shades of pink, red, lavender, white, and even multi-colored. Selections can also vary in size, growing to a height of 10 feet to 15 feet tall with a spread between six feet to 10 feet wide. Camellia likes an acidic soil (a soil pH below 7.0) with plenty of moisture, and good to excellent drainage is essential. Water as needed in the summer and in times of drought. Camellia will benefit from being fertilized in the spring with a fertilizer labeled for acid-loving shrubs. It thrives in a partialshade location or a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, and it makes a good, large specimen plant. It can also be used in mixed screens in the garden. Only if needed, prune camellia within two months after it has finished blooming since next year’s flower buds will soon begin to develop. Camellias of old were famous for their lack of winter hardiness (to just USDA Cold Hardiness Zones 7-9 or 0 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit), but the group known as the Ackerman Hybrids buck that trend. William L. Ackerman with the USDA (now retired) bred a series of interspecific crosses between C. oleifera and C. sasanqua, C. hiemalis, or C. vernalis selections. Many, not all, are 54

identified as the winter series, because they bloom in the fall into very early winter. Being reliably hardy as far north as USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 6 (-10 to 0 degrees), this group is better equipped to handle the cold. Petals are shed individually when bloom is completed, eliminating the tiresome task of dead-heading for the gardener. I recommend having not just one camellia in your garden, but a couple that are known to flower at different times during the fall through spring seasons. This way you can enjoy having a bit of “flower power” in your landscape when it is least expected! Fo r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n , v i s i t t h e

A House Tells a Story of Knoxville and Its People F

OR CERTAIN, the Fort Sanders

neighborhood is a historical jewel. It takes its name from the fort renamed in honor of General William P. Sanders and the pivotal Civil War battle that took place there in 1863. As the area developed into a prominent residential district, the people who called it home played significant roles in Knoxville history. It was about 20 years after the Battle of Fort Sanders that the area began developing with residences. Home sites sprang out of what was once two large parcels of land. One parcel, known as “White’s Addition,” was the estate of one of the sons of Knoxville founder James White. It began at the Tennessee River and extended north to Laurel Avenue. The second parcel, the area north of Laurel Street along Highland, Forest, and Grand Avenues, was known as “Ramsey’s Addition.” While White’s Addition became a prominent upperclass neighborhood, Ramsey’s Addition was popular with working classes. Scores of prominent merchants, professionals, civic leaders, and professors, as well as many hardworking laborers and public servants, would call Fort Sanders home. Author James Agee spent his early childhood in the Fort Sanders neighborhood. Around 1900, a Queen Ann style cottage was built at 1804 Highland Avenue. Its first inhabitant was Reverend Isaac Van Dewater. Following Rev. Dewater’s departure, the home became a revolving door of inhabitants. Between 1901 and 1915, it was home to a clerk, a foreman at the Knoxville Woolen Mill, a locomotive engineer, a superintendent, a marble company engineer, and an employee at the L&N Railroad. 56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2019

From 1915 until 1920, it was home to Edger T. Keisling and his family. Keisling joined the Knoxville Police department in May 1916 and retired in 1942 after 26 years of service. He rose to the rank of captain and is best known for his raids of illegal liquor establishments during the 1920s. After Mr. Keisling, Johnathan H. Mauney moved in. Mauney was the first superintendent of Fort Sanders Hospital and would remain so until his death in 1938. Originally a native of Murray, North Carolina, Mauney moved to Knoxville in 1913 as a railroad construction foreman and later worked as a cashier for Knoxville General Hospital and Lincoln Memorial Hospital before moving into management at the latter. He accepted the position as superintendent of Fort Sanders Hospital when it was opened in 1919. Mauney was an amateur archeologist, member of Church Street Methodist Episcopal Church South, the Optimists Club, and the Masonic Order. Mr. Mauney left the house in 1922 and was replaced by James French, a foreman with Gibson Construction Company. In 1926, Joseph M. Lobetti, a native of Turin, Italy,

moved in. Lobetti immigrated to the United States in 1902 and married Coal Creek native Minnie Demarcus in 1908. Lobetti become a citizen of the United States in 1928 and was the building manager for both The General Building on Market Street and the Holston Bank Building on Gay Street. In 1929, William M. Edwards, an accountant with L&N Railroad, was a new resident, and he stayed until 1931. His presence was followed by a salesman, a truck driver, and a Knoxville High School teacher. The story goes on for decades, with the last residents being University of Tennessee students before Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center purchased the property to expand a neighboring parking garage. In 2018, the Medical Center partnered with Knox Heritage and the City of Knoxville’s Preservation Fund to move the structure across the street. Today the home has a new address, 1815 Highland Avenue. Knox Heritage will restore and renovate the house so it can continue to tell the story of the Fort Sanders neighborhood and the City of Knoxville.

Knox Heritage preserves, restores, and transforms historic places. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

CYNTHIA BLACKMAN-SANTANA I B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

T’S OFTEN BEEN said that behind

every great man is a great woman. This is literally the case with Carlos Santana with his wife of eight years, Cindy BlackmanSantana. Cindy is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s touring and studio drummers. Astute music fans will know Cindy as a phenomenal musician who stands quite well on her own. Having cut her musical teeth on hard-core jazz, she has played with a long list of jazz artists, including Sam Rivers, Angela Bofill, and Sonny Simmons. She’s also quite the rock drummer, first hitting it big as Lenny Kravitz’s drummer and performing on his huge 1993 hit “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” She’s pretty much played with him ever since. Her work as a rock drummer invaded her personal life when, in December 2010, she married Carlos Santana. The marriage is rocking along beautifully both personally and musically. I recently caught up with Cindy to chat about the new CDs and life with Carlos. At the beginning of my chat with Cindy, I congratulated her on her recent wedding anniversary and asked her if it has been anything at all like she envisioned it eight years ago. “Um, no, it’s not. Ha! Ha! It’s not in some ways, and in other ways, it’s gloriously like I envisioned it. I really like monogamy, because I love growing with a person. I’ve always been that way my whole life. I like that. I like seeing the growth of a person – doing things together, growing with somebody. We’ve certainly done a lot of that. It’s a beautiful thing, because we still have our freshness. We still have playfulness, and we still have fun.” About the new CDs coming out, Cindy said: “He’s got a great CD coming out called Africa Speaks, and it’s with the Santana band

58

plus this incredible singer who Carlos came across by the name of Buika (pronounced BWEE-kah), and she’s SO amazing! This music, as the title would suggest, is based off of a lot of music that Carlos heard that is from Africa – with some different kinds of African rhythms, but also with music that comes from Africa that was initially influenced by American music. American music – or classical music, which is jazz – comes in part from African music. We took the rhythms of Africa, and we took the harmonies of Europe and developed on both of those things and expounded on both of those things and created jazz music, which is what I call American classical music or American CLASSIC music. Carlos heard all those things and took them and did something else with them. It’s a nice back and forth influence, if you will, for what we come up with for this record. It’s really incredible. “That record is coming out. Prior to that, my record will be released. I’m really, really proud of the music that we’re doing. I recorded a lot of music with some musicians. There’s SO MUCH music at this point that I have basically two sides of the record. One is going to be, for the most part, instrumental. The second side is featuring my vocal debut. Those songs are more on a commercial/pop side, where the instrumental part is very

electric and kind of a jazz/rock/funk vibe. Both sides feature a guitar-heavy roster. “John McLaughlin is on one track on each side, so he’s on one instrumental and one vocal track. Carlos is on both sides. Vernon Reid is on the instrumental side, as is Kurt Hammet. So it’s really got those heavy hitters on guitar. “On the second side, with the main vocal things, they were produced by Narada Michael Walden, who is in his own right a great drummer, but he’s also a very great producer as well. Narada is very sweet! A very kind individual. Wonderful to work with.” How does Cindy want to be remembered, and what does she hope her legacy is? “I have a song on my new record called ‘Change Is in Your Hands.’ I believe that it’s a true title. I believe that we can all make change happen, and we’re all responsible for it happening or not happening. I want to be an instrument for change for the good; change for the better; change for the higher level of awareness; change for the higher level of everyone’s life circumstances. It’s not the ‘crabs in a barrel,’ and I know that that exists, especially in our society. But I don’t take on the energy of the crab in the barrel. I just take the energy of upgrading and uplifting. I’m not going to be the crab that’s going.” You can read the extended interview w i t h C i n d y a t w w w. b o o m e r o c i t y. com the learn latest about her at www. cindyblackmansantana.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Technology Doesn’t Replace That Human Touch B Y TO M I R M E N

THERE’S NO QUESTION

that improvements in technology can help businesses enhance the customer experience. But it’s unlikely that this technology by itself will ever replace that human touch. While technology can help improve the customer service experience delivered by humans, reliance on technology alone can result in the absence of that human experience that is the foundation of a meaningful, longlasting relationship. Unless you are in a generic marketplace where you are unable to successfully differentiate yourself and where low prices dominate, the absence of genuine customer relationships can severely impact your bottom line. Because technology is playing an everincreasing role in our daily lives, creating and maintaining genuine relationships are all the more important to your customers today. And the more you reach out to your customers on a personal level, the greater the trust and loyalty that results.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2019

Because technology is playing an ever-increasing role in our daily lives, creating and maintaining genuine relationships are all the more important to your customers today. Meaningful relationships help you better understand your customers and their competitive marketplaces. It also places you in a much better position to assist them in a way that will truly differentiate you from your competitors! And when competitive situations arise, as they inevitably do, your customers, whose loyalty you have earned,

will likely confide in you. Remember that the lack of human relationships in business makes you particularly vulnerable. I joked recently with a new client who, in his first email to me, asked me to call him personally. I asked him his age, suggesting that he was probably at least 50 years old. When he asked why, I explained that it has been my experience, as well as the experience of a great many of our clients, that a growing number of potentially new customers choose to conduct business exclusively via text or email. This is particularly true of many younger entrepreneurs. It seems that they have chosen to conduct their businesses in a generic world. While perhaps appearing efficient on the surface, just imagine how this generic environment deprives these same entrepreneurs of the very relationships that might have helped their businesses to prosper. Don’t ignore the power of the human touch, as genuine relationships will trump any advancements in technology.

Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits SUCCESS

On January 12, 2009, our lives were turned upside down when Goody’s closed, where John was an IT manager. Living in a borrowed motor coach and with a contractor building our kennel, our income had just been cut in half. Worried was an understatement! Hearing of our misfortune, Tom from Everything Knoxville helped us to create a cost-effective, well-thought out marketing plan to help us secure potential clients for our new kennel. Everything Knoxville is not just magazines. Behind those publications is a great team of professionals, sharing their personal experiences, inspiring and promoting small businesses like ours. In 2014, Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits was recognized as a top boarding resort and grooming spa in the Knoxville area by the Knoxville News Sentinel Reader’s Choice Award. God has truly blessed us! Thank you Everything Knoxville for your role in our success.
