EK: Tell our readers a little bit about Clinton Glass’ 63 year history. Greg: There have been only three owners since 1957. The store has transformed over time from a paint and glass store, to a commercial glass company, and now a residential shower glass specialty store. EK: Your transition from commercial glass installation to custom shower glass was a major step. What did you see in your marketplace that inspired such a bold move? Kim: During the recession, commercial glass sales dropped off, and home remodeling picked up as people decided to stay in their homes. As the demand increased, we grew with it, and now we install about 200 custom showers per month in East Tennessee. EK: More than 10,000 bathrooms later, what role has your in-house design services played in your overall success? Greg: We hear frequently that we can design showers that other companies have difficulty with. That comes from measuring and installing thousands of showers. We’ve developed systems and capabilities to make the process go smoothly for our clients. EK: After a homeowner first contacts you, describe the typical customer experience. Kim: One of the best ways for customers to start the process is by visiting our showroom. Here they get to see, touch, and even step into the many different shower displays. how they want their shower to look and feel, but a visit can offer them a chance to confirm or improve their design. EK: At what stage of new construction or remodeling is it best for a homeowner to first contact you? Greg: We like to talk to clients in the planning stage. Some glass companies think that’s too early and that you should only call them after the tile is complete. Contacting us early helps avoid any possible design concerns before they are constructed in the field. EK: While a growing number of companies are outsourcing their work, Clinton Glass continues to rely only on its own employees. Why should that be important to your customers? Kim: Our customers appreciate that our estimators and installers are all experienced, well-trained, fully insured, trusted employees. We arrive in badged company vehicles with Clinton Glass shirts. We survey our customers, and their feedback most often includes comments on how professional and courteous we are! EK: You’ve actually taken your commitment to providing a truly turnkey customer experience to an all-new level with your new, state-of-the-art facility where you now fabricate and temper all of your own custom shower glass. Tell us more. Greg: We control the entire process inhouse, from the showroom to installation. And, much to our customer’s frequent surprise, we fabricate and temper our own glass in-house. This means we are not relying on an out-of-state glass fabricator who doesn’t know the intricacies of each job. It is wonderful having our crew handle every step, and I know our customers appreciate it! EK: Why should this be important to your customers? Kim: The biggest benefit has been quality control; we have complete control over the quality of our product! Also, with control of the glass fabrication, we have greater

flexibility on the installation schedule. This has kept our installation lead times consistent. EK: Tell our readers about your new inspirational showroom. Greg: We have 27 full size showers on display in nearly every configuration imaginable. If you’re in the planning stages, come by and look, and you will get some great ideas. We frequently hear, “I never thought of that” or “I’m a very visual person, and now I know what our shower is going to look like.” EK: What is the best way for our readers to learn more about Clinton Glass? Of course a showroom visit is a must. And if you ask, Greg is happy to give shop tours of our fabrication and tempering equipment! EK: In closing, is their anything else you would like to add? Greg: We appreciate our wonderful customers and just want to thank them for allowing us into their homes to help create their dream baths.

OUR CLOSET affects you more than you realize; after all, it is where the day begins. For most, the feeling of relaxation when entering a favorite resort is the goal for home décor. is a double bill featuring the chamber opera “Beneath Suspicion” and a performance of the song cycle “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn (from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride).” The event will be held March 14-16 at 7:30 pm at Blount Mansion, located at 200 W. Hill Avenue in Knoxville. Beneath Suspicion is a one-act opera by Knoxville native composer Jesse Ayers. It is based on a true, little-known story of two daring, American women who played on prevailing gender and racial stereotypes to fight slavery by spying for the Union during the Civil War. Elizabeth Van Lew, a passionate abolitionist known around Richmond as “Crazy Bet,” is the middle-aged daughter of a recently deceased, wealthy Richmond slave owner. Upon her father’s death, she frees her family’s slaves, including a young household servant 8

As the war breaks out, Mary is in her early 20s, Bet, her 40s. Though Richmond is the capital of the Confederacy, about half of its inhabitants are Union sympathizers. Bet, a firebrand, uses her contacts to set up a spy ring to report Confederate movements to the Union military. Her information is so reliable that her coded messages go directly General Ulysses S. Grant. This work imagines a key scene in the lives of these two women: The crisis moment when Mary must decide if she will risk her life to

undertake the daring plan she believes God has revealed to her or if she will shrink back to maintain her safety and personal freedom. Both women were inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame in the 1990s. Elizabeth Van Lew will be played by Lindsey Fuson, soprano, and Mary will be played by Denisha Pompey, soprano. “Good morning, darling, the sun has just come up. It is a beautiful morning…” So begins a letter from 1944 that 1st Lt. George W. Honts wrote his wife, Evelyn Honts, while deployed during World War II. The text to these letters has been set to music by composer Alan Smith in the song cycle “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn, from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride.” Performance will be by Elena Stabile, soprano. GO! Contemporary Dance Works will present Jehanne… the Story of Joan of Arc, a full length contemporary ballet, at the Bijou Theatre. A large creative effort with more than 60 dancers, five choreographers, and an expansive creative team, this one-of-a-kind ballet will capture the intensity, conflict, and resolve of this medieval teenager who was both a maiden and a warrior during a time of spiritual and political upheaval. Jehanne, which is the 15th century spelling of Joan, was scripted by Artistic Director, Lisa Hall McKee, to chronicle Joan’s life in a visual labyrinth of the medieval time period. McKee has contrasted haunting moments such as her visions, trial, and death with elaborate, ornate, and lively scenes such as the banquet hall where she meets Charles VII. “I designed the performance so all age groups could attend,” said McKee. “The portrayal of her death will be abstract, and the final scene will be directed to joy and hope in celebration of her life. It is an elaborate display of the medieval time period contrasted by stark, emotional, and empowering moments. Professional Harper Addison dances the role of Joan with incredible artistry and sensitivity. Strong, yet vulnerable. She is mesmerizing as Joan.” Show times for this inspiring and inspiriting ballet are Saturday, February 23, at 2 and 7:30 pm and Sunday, February 24, at 3 pm. Ticket prices range from $17 to $27. Knoxville Named Host City for the 2019 Miss Tennessee Scholarship Competition

HE MISS TENNESSEE Scholarship Competition announced recently that Knoxville will be the 2019 host city and the competition will take place at ThompsonBoling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus. The three nights of preliminary competitions will take place Wednesday through Friday, June 26-28, followed by the Miss Tennessee Finals on Saturday, June 29, at 7 pm. The 2019 competition marks the dawning of a new day for the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Competition. There’s no need to buy high-priced equipment or enroll in culinary school. All you need are simple tools, practical know-how, and the best tasting, highest quality natural ingredients to make cookies that will please everyone. Here are a few simple tips for delectable cookies. » Invest in a food scale. Baking is all about chemistry. For consistent results, use a simple food scale. This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. The rule of thumb is that every cup of white flour equals five ounces, though some sources may recommend less. Many recipes indicate required ounces or grams. The right amount of flour is needed to absorb the ingredients and to provide correct ratios with raising agents. » Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough for an hour or more prevents cookies from over-spreading while baking. Time spent in the fridge also gives ingredients the chance to gel, enhancing flavors, especially if you’re using spices. Another upside: You can 18

Stir in flour and baking powder; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm (about 2 hours). Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll dough one third at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack. Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

Winter Allergies: The Allergies You Didn’t Know You Could Have A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

get below freezing, people with seasonal allergies to grass, tree, and weed pollens get well-deserved relief from their symptoms. But if you’re still sneezing and blowing your nose when winter descends, you might have indoor allergies. The problem for many allergy sufferers is figuring out what exactly is causing their symptoms. Why? Most allergy sufferers develop similar symptoms no matter what allergen they’re reacting to. When you have a stuffy or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing and coughing, you know you’re probably allergic to something. Beyond that, it’s hard to discover the culprit. If it’s serious enough to prompt a trip to the doctor for relief, see an allergist. “Allergists are the best-trained medical professionals to treat allergies and asthma,” said allergist Todd Mahr, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. “Much like a cardiologist specializes in heart problems, an allergist specializes in allergic diseases. Your allergist will find the source of your symptoms and treat the cause so you can feel healthy all the time.” Here are some common causes of winter, indoor allergies and tips from ACAAI on what you can do about them: » Dust mite allergy Dust mites are one of the most common indoor allergens and a year-round annoyance. Those allergic to dust mites suffer most in their own homes. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that live in furniture, carpets, and bedding and feed off the flakes of skin people shed every day. They thrive in warm, humid environments. Often you’ll notice

your symptoms immediately after vacuuming, sweeping, or dusting, when you’ve stirred up dust. Molds, pollen, pet hair, fur, or feathers can contribute to a dust allergy as well. Diagnosis and treatment: As with all the allergies in this article, your allergist will perform a skin test or blood test to determine the exact cause of your allergy and order a course of treatment that may include medications or allergy shots. Management: The presence of dust mites does not mean you have a dirty house; they’re everywhere. You can lessen or avoid your symptoms by removing the usual suspects that cause dust allergies. Choose wood floors instead of carpet, clean your house with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter, use miteproof cases on your mattresses and pillows, and wash your linens regularly in hot water. Consider installing a high-efficiency disposable filter in your HVAC system. The filter should have a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating of 11 to 13 – the higher the MERV rating the better. » Mold allergy Molds live inside and outside of your home. They can thrive in moist places like bathrooms and kitchens, and the annoying thing about molds is that many molds aren’t visible to the naked eye. As the spores become airborne, they can cause allergic reactions and worsen asthma symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment: Your allergist may have you track your symptoms over time to see where you’ve been when your allergies flare up. That will help identify the culprit. Antihistamines and decongestants can ease symptoms. Management: Wear a mask when doing yard

work, and once inside, take a shower and rinse your nose with a saline solution to remove mold spores. In the kitchen, clean up any spills or leaks quickly to prevent mold from growing. Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in areas like bathrooms and basements. Clean your garbage cans and fridge drawers. For serious mold problems, call a professional. » Pet allergy It’s a heartbreaking situation for pet lovers if they have allergy symptoms after being with their pets. Allergy symptoms can be constant because exposure can occur anywhere – in pet-friendly workplaces, restaurants, stores, school, in daycare – anywhere a pet owner has been. Diagnosis and treatment: Your allergist will perform a skin test or blood test to determine if your pet is causing your allergy symptoms. They may advise treating with nasal sprays, antihistamines, or other medications. Allergy shots are also effective in treating pet allergies, because a resistance is built up over time. Management: Avoidance is the best way to manage a pet allergy, but you don’t have to part with your furry family members. Some ways to lessen your symptoms include keeping your pet out of your bedroom, washing your hands with soap and water after petting or playing with your pet, vacuuming with a HEPA vacuum, and bathing your pet once a week. Once you know the cause of your symptoms, you can conquer the allergy. It’s time to take control of your allergies and asthma and start enjoying life again. It’s time to find an allergist. Zoo Knoxville Honors Legacy of Former Director, Ted Beattie, in “Heart of Africa”

commemorated the legacy of Ted Beattie, the zoo’s second executive director, by naming the central part of the African animal area in his honor. The Ted Beattie Heart of Africa was unveiled at a reception hosted by Natalie and Jim Haslam and was attended by family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Beattie and supporters of Zoo Knoxville. The surprise announcement was made in the newly-christened area of the zoo that is home to animals native to Africa and designed to give guests the experience of exploring an African forest. Heart of Africa was constructed under Beattie’s leadership and the zoo’s first modern exhibit featuring natural habitats. Ted Beattie’s brilliant marketing and promotional skills raised the zoo’s profile in the community during his tenure from 1987 until 1992, and he impressed upon the business leaders and elected officials the importance of supporting it. Under his leadership, the zoo added many new departments and gained

a surprise? You could be in a higher tax bracket when you are retired and reach age 70 than when you are working at age 60. On the face of it, it seems counterintuitive, since surely you would have less income Yvonne Marsh, in retirement. But for retirees who CFP®, CPA have built a nice nest egg in their taxdeferred retirement plans, the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) dictated by the IRS at age 70 1/2 can create enough taxable income to push them into a higher tax bracket – and create a Medicare premium surcharge to boot. Tax planning can save the day! The window of time between retirement and age 701/2 is a golden opportunity to convert a portion of your taxable retirement accounts into tax-free Roth IRAs. Your taxable income may drop a significant amount in the year after you retire, especially if you defer Social Security and delay withdrawals from your taxable retirement accounts. Structured correctly, you may be in the 12% or 22% bracket and may even be in the 0% capital gains bracket for some period, too. Yes, you’ll owe tax on the dollar amount you convert to Roth IRAs, but by measuring how much you can convert and still stay in the lower brackets, you pay less tax to create this forever tax-free asset. Once you’ve held the Roth for five years, you can withdraw money tax-free (and it’s not counted in the Medicare surcharge calculation, either). Or just leave the account to grow, since Roths are not subject to RMD withdrawal requirements. Plan ahead for this strategy, because you’ll need a combination of cash and brokerage accounts for lowtax cash flow to live on while you’re using your low tax bracket years for taxable Roth conversions. Remember, even if you do need to sell appreciated stocks or mutual funds, you may owe no (or minimal) capital gains tax in these lower brackets. Even if you didn’t need another reason to act, I’ll still give you one: Taxes are on sale under our new tax code! Through 2025, tax rates are probably the lowest of your lifetime. F A S H I O N S worn by the Vanderbilts recreated by Oscarwinning designer, John Bright, will fill the grand rooms of Biltmore House when Biltmore’s newest exhibition, A Vanderbilt House Party – The Gilded Age, opens February 8 and runs through May 27. In collaboration with Biltmore curators, Bright and his team at Cosprop, London meticulously recreated fashions favored by the Vanderbilts and their guests at turn-of-the-century celebrations known as house parties. Throughout his career, Bright has received 12 Academy Award nominations and a win for Best Costume Design in 1985 for the Merchant Ivory adaption of “A Room with a View.” The film starred Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Daniel Day-Lewis. An Immersive Experience “This exhibition is unlike any we’ve ever done before,” said Leslie Klingner, Biltmore’s curator of interpretation. “You will get a sense of what life was truly like at Biltmore.” That sense of the Gilded-Age era is enhanced by a new Premium Audio Guided Tour. This component of the exhibition combines innovative 360 degree sound techniques with stories told from the perspectives of those who lived and worked at Biltmore in the early 1900s. This creates a unique, immersive audio-visual experience for guests. Klingner and Ellen Rickman, Biltmore’s director of museum services, traveled between London and Asheville during the course of two years to work with Bright to recreate the Vanderbilt wardrobe, researching fashion magazines of the era and studying archival photography and portraits from Biltmore’s collection in great detail in order to create the designs found in the exhibition. “To bring these photographs that have been in black and white for more than a century 28

into vivid, living color representations has been incredible,” said Klingner. Among the artwork, tapestries, and antiques in Biltmore House and the Vanderbilt collection, there are few pieces of clothing from the Gilded Age-era. Clothing tends to deteriorate through the years. “This exhibition is like we’re replacing a piece of the collection that was missing,” said Dini Cecil Pickering, great-granddaughter of George Vanderbilt who was Biltmore’s founder. Biltmore and Bright This is not the first time Biltmore and Bright have teamed up. The collaboration dates back to when the estate began making plans to display a selection of costumes Bright created for the wildly popular PBS series “Downton Abbey.” Biltmore hosted the premiere showing of Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times in 2015. The exhibition then traveled to several U.S. cities. A Vanderbilt House Party is included in Biltmore daytime admission. Guests visiting the estate may also tour the estate’s gardens, explore hiking and biking trails, dine at one of seven restaurants, and spend time at Antler Hill Village & Winery. OAK RIDGE Civic Music Association – home of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, Chorus and Chamber Music Series – continues its 74th season, Distinctly Oak Ridge, with concerts and events from February through April. “Oak Ridge and Oak Ridgers are unique, and ORCMA’s concerts must meet a standard of excellence and innovation for both long-time listeners and new listeners,” said Dan Allcott, Music Director. Allcott’s Cumberland Piano Trio performs February 9 at 7:30 pm at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church and will introduce the audience to innovative carbon fiber string instruments. “The term ‘innovative’ is often used too loosely, but as we learn more and more about the demand for carbon fiber musical instruments, we begin to understand how truly innovative they are,” said Lisa Muci Eckhoff, Executive Director. “Anyone with a love of science, music, and the environment will be fascinated by this concert. We’re thrilled to feature instruments provided by Oak Ridgebased company, Pulcir Music, and to host Amit Naskar, Senior Researcher and Leader of the Carbon & Composites Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, who will join the musicians in the pre-concert talk at 7 pm.” The trio will perform music by Dmitri Shostakovich, David Baker, and Antonín Dvořák. Adult general admission to the concert is $25. Carbon Fiber Pairings is a student-friendly pre-concert dinner with taco bar and “carbon”-ated beverages, and attendees will have the opportunity to touch and “try” the carbon fiber instruments from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. Adults are $20, and youth 18 and under attend all activities free. You can sponsor a student for $10. On February 16, the all-day music festival from Rock to Bach returns. Held at the Oak 32

The piece is “a call to heal the world” and is based on Leonard Bernstein’s speech “An Artist’s Response to Violence.” It will be sung in Hebrew. Little Engine Playhouse Expands 2019 Tour

Playhouse Tour, presented by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, brings another delightful children’s book to life with expanded dates and new locations in 2019. Audiences will enjoy the theatrical adaptation of “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon,” which delivers a positive, antibullying message. When Molly Lou Melon starts a new school, Ronald Durkin, the school bully, makes fun of her on her very first day. He mocks her teeth, clumsiness, and small frame. With advice from her grandmother, Molly Lou shows Ronald her perceived flaws are really her talents. Molly Lou is an example of overcoming obstacles and self-acceptance. “The anti-bullying message in this book is

so important in today’s world,” said Natacha Hylton, Dollywood Entertainment Manager. “We all felt like this was a great time to expand the tour, especially with the subject matter of the selected book.” The 2019 expanded tour is made up of two actors and a stage manager. Stops at familiar children’s venues in Middle and East Tennessee, along with new areas including Memphis, as well as Arkansas, South Carolina, and Ontario, Canada, are scheduled for the tour. “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” is written by Patty Lovell, with illustrations by David Catrow. The stage adaptation of the story is engineered by long-time Playhouse director, Brian Hull. The cast features Melissa Lawler

and Jonathan LeGallais, and Joshua Stewart is stage manager. The Little Engine Playhouse tour is funded by Penguin Books in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and the Dollywood Foundation. The Little Engine Playhouse Tour stops in Sevier County (week of March 4), Knox County (week of February 4), Chattanooga (week of February 11), and Anderson County schools (week of February 18) before heading to Asheville, North Carolina (week of February 25) and Memphis (weeks of March 18 and March 25). question by rattling off characteristics like hardwood floors, deep baseboards, and cheerful front porches, but those are just a small part of the total equation. this, the temperature is 68 degrees. My Lenten roses are starting to bloom, and my bulbs are up. My roses have never gone dormant so that I can prune them, and there is new growth on several of my shrubs. The warm temperatures have made the month more pleasant for humans, but it is dangerous for our plants! When it gets colder, and it will, all this new growth will be vulnerable to frost/freeze damage. In addition to the warmth, we have also had an overabundance of rainfall. This can cause problems with larger trees, especially those that were damaged by the drought a few years ago. Rootballs actually shrink when the water is so readily available, so spring storms can easily topple them. Even smaller trees and shrubs may start to lean or may even lean right over to the ground! What I am telling you is that you may

be doing some damage control this spring. Keep a watchful eye on your lawn and garden so that you are prepared. February is typically pretty miserable, but we really have no idea what Mother Nature has in store for us this year. With that in mind, here are the gardening tasks you can take on this month when we have a pretty day or two: » Do your walkaround, keeping an eye out for damage already showing. If necessary, make a note to call an arborist. Then make notes on projects that you can take on to beautify (or simplify) your yard. What needs to be pruned, moved, or removed? What needs to be divided? Are there areas that simply need to be re-done from the ground up? Visualize what you would like to see this spring, and start taking steps to make it happen. » I guarantee that weeds are sprouting

unless you are a faithful pre-emergent applicator. Keep on top of your weeding, or you will be sorry! It is critical that you identify marauders amongst your plants before they take over. Hackberry trees, privet, wild grapes, wild honeysuckle, and other weeds will camouflage themselves in your shrubs, so be vigilant against them. Pull or spray them regularly. By the way, the only way I have found to kill privet is to cut it back and paint the stump with Roundup concentrate. That stuff is the cockroach of the garden! » How is your mulch layer? If it is less than 3” deep, you may want to apply a fresh layer to help keep the soil temperature stable. This will prevent “heaving” of perennials and will protect some of those bulbs that are emerging so early. » Yes, you can prune summer bloomers. Writing this always makes me sigh, because I know what some of you are going to do. Please, please, please educate yourselves before you start! “Because this is the way I have always done it” and “because this is how my neighbor does it” is no excuse for butchery! Google pruning techniques or stop by and let us show you how to do it before you start whacking. Also, remember not to prune spring bloomers or you will have no bloomers! » If vegetable beds or new planting beds are in your plans, this is a great time to get them ready. Clear off the area and add compost to build in nutrients. Remember that you should not plant vegetables in the same place that you planted them last year, so plan for your crop rotation. If you are planning a vegetable bed for the first time, make sure that it will get a minimum of six hours of sunlight. If you have questions, please give us a call. » You can start cold weather veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage in cold frames and direct seed greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onion sets in the garden toward the end of the month. » You can also plant trees and shrubs if needed. The ground is certainly soft enough to dig! » Pansies will help make gloomy winter days more colorful if added now. You can also force stems of forsythia, quince, and pussy willow inside to brighten up your day. » Don’t forget about the birds! Keep feeders and birdbaths clean and full. When the weather gets cold, a birdbath heater will be deeply appreciated by thirsty birds. AMELLIA IS A SHRUB

prized for its showy flowers in the South’s winter landscape and its glossy evergreen leaves that stay a deep, shiny green all year. These woody plants, which can be rounded shrubs or rangy 20-foot trees, are native to Asia. When they first started gaining in popularity in America in the 1800s, they were thought of as hothouse bloomers or the darlings of the Southern garden, because the Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica) is only cold hardy to about 10 degrees. After decades of breeding with species from South Korea and Japan, hardier varieties are making their way north, and there are plenty of camellias that perform reliably well in Tennessee. Blooms can be as large as five inches across with yellow centers or full in the center with rounded overlapping petals, much like a rose. More than 30,000 cultivars of camellia have been named and introduced according to the American Camellia Society. Depending upon selection, they can vary from blooming in the fall, winter, or spring. Plants are rated as being early flowering (prior to January 1st), mid-season flowering (January through February), and late flowering (March or later). Keep in mind that bloom time can vary depending on environmental factors in your landscape such as sun, soil condition, and water. Once in bloom, flowers can last for a period of four to six weeks, but a hard freeze can burn the blooms, thus shortening their show. Bloom colors include shades of pink, red, lavender, white, and even multi-colored. Selections can also vary in size, growing to a height of 10 feet to 15 feet tall with a spread between six feet to 10 feet wide. Camellia likes an acidic soil (a soil pH below 7.0) with plenty of moisture, and good to excellent drainage is essential. Water as needed in the summer and in times of drought. Camellia will benefit from being fertilized in the spring with a fertilizer labeled for acid-loving shrubs. It thrives in a partialshade location or a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, and it makes a good, large specimen plant. It can also be used in mixed screens in the garden. Only if needed, prune camellia within two months after it has finished blooming since next year’s flower buds will soon begin to develop. Camellias of old were famous for their lack of winter hardiness (to just USDA Cold Hardiness Zones 7-9 or 0 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit), but the group known as the Ackerman Hybrids buck that trend. William L. Ackerman with the USDA (now retired) bred a series of interspecific crosses between C. oleifera and C. sasanqua, C. hiemalis, or C. vernalis selections. Many, not all, are 54

identified as the winter series, because they bloom in the fall into very early winter. Being reliably hardy as far north as USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 6 (-10 to 0 degrees), this group is better equipped to handle the cold. Petals are shed individually when bloom is completed, eliminating the tiresome task of dead-heading for the gardener. I recommend having not just one camellia in your garden, but a couple that are known to flower at different times during the fall through spring seasons. A House Tells a Story of Knoxville and Its People F

neighborhood is a historical jewel. It takes its name from the fort renamed in honor of General William P. Sanders and the pivotal Civil War battle that took place there in 1863. As the area developed into a prominent residential district, the people who called it home played significant roles in Knoxville history. It was about 20 years after the Battle of Fort Sanders that the area began developing with residences. Home sites sprang out of what was once two large parcels of land. One parcel, known as “White’s Addition,” was the estate of one of the sons of Knoxville founder James White. It began at the Tennessee River and extended north to Laurel Avenue. The second parcel, the area north of Laurel Street along Highland, Forest, and Grand Avenues, was known as “Ramsey’s Addition.” While White’s Addition became a prominent upperclass neighborhood, Ramsey’s Addition was popular with working classes. Scores of prominent merchants, professionals, civic leaders, and professors, as well as many hardworking laborers and public servants, would call Fort Sanders home. Author James Agee spent his early childhood in the Fort Sanders neighborhood. Around 1900, a Queen Ann style cottage was built at 1804 Highland Avenue. Its first inhabitant was Reverend Isaac Van Dewater. Following Rev. Dewater’s departure, the home became a revolving door of inhabitants. Between 1901 and 1915, it was home to a clerk, a foreman at the Knoxville Woolen Mill, a locomotive engineer, a superintendent, a marble company engineer, and an employee at the L&N Railroad. 56

From 1915 until 1920, it was home to Edger T. Keisling and his family. Keisling joined the Knoxville Police department in May 1916 and retired in 1942 after 26 years of service. He rose to the rank of captain and is best known for his raids of illegal liquor establishments during the 1920s. After Mr. Keisling, Johnathan H. Mauney moved in. Mauney was the first superintendent of Fort Sanders Hospital and would remain so until his death in 1938. Originally a native of Murray, North Carolina, Mauney moved to Knoxville in 1913 as a railroad construction foreman and later worked as a cashier for Knoxville General Hospital and Lincoln Memorial Hospital before moving into management at the latter. He accepted the position as superintendent of Fort Sanders Hospital when it was opened in 1919. Mauney was an amateur archeologist, member of Church Street Methodist Episcopal Church South, the Optimists Club, and the Masonic Order. Mr. Mauney left the house in 1922 and was replaced by James French, a foreman with Gibson Construction Company. In 1926, Joseph M. Lobetti, a native of Turin, Italy,

moved in. Lobetti immigrated to the United States in 1902 and married Coal Creek native Minnie Demarcus in 1908. Lobetti become a citizen of the United States in 1928 and was the building manager for both The General Building on Market Street and the Holston Bank Building on Gay Street. In 1929, William M. Edwards, an accountant with L&N Railroad, was a new resident, and he stayed until 1931. His presence was followed by a salesman, a truck driver, and a Knoxville High School teacher. The story goes on for decades, with the last residents being University of Tennessee students before Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center purchased the property to expand a neighboring parking garage. In 2018, the Medical Center partnered with Knox Heritage and the City of Knoxville’s Preservation Fund to move the structure across the street. Today the home has a new address, 1815 Highland Avenue. Knox Heritage will restore and renovate the house so it can continue to tell the story of the Fort Sanders neighborhood and the City of Knoxville.

T’S OFTEN BEEN said that behind

every great man is a great woman. This is literally the case with Carlos Santana with his wife of eight years, Cindy BlackmanSantana. Cindy is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s touring and studio drummers. Astute music fans will know Cindy as a phenomenal musician who stands quite well on her own. Having cut her musical teeth on hard-core jazz, she has played with a long list of jazz artists, including Sam Rivers, Angela Bofill, and Sonny Simmons. She’s also quite the rock drummer, first hitting it big as Lenny Kravitz’s drummer and performing on his huge 1993 hit “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” She’s pretty much played with him ever since. Her work as a rock drummer invaded her personal life when, in December 2010, she married Carlos Santana. The marriage is rocking along beautifully both personally and musically. I recently caught up with Cindy to chat about the new CDs and life with Carlos. At the beginning of my chat with Cindy, I congratulated her on her recent wedding anniversary and asked her if it has been anything at all like she envisioned it eight years ago. “Um, no, it’s not. Ha! Ha! It’s not in some ways, and in other ways, it’s gloriously like I envisioned it. I really like monogamy, because I love growing with a person. I’ve always been that way my whole life. I like that. I like seeing the growth of a person – doing things together, growing with somebody. We’ve certainly done a lot of that. It’s a beautiful thing, because we still have our freshness. We still have playfulness, and we still have fun.” About the new CDs coming out, Cindy said: “He’s got a great CD coming out called Africa Speaks, and it’s with the Santana band

plus this incredible singer who Carlos came across by the name of Buika (pronounced BWEE-kah), and she’s SO amazing! This music, as the title would suggest, is based off of a lot of music that Carlos heard that is from Africa – with some different kinds of African rhythms, but also with music that comes from Africa that was initially influenced by American music. American music – or classical music, which is jazz – comes in part from African music. We took the rhythms of Africa, and we took the harmonies of Europe and developed on both of those things and expounded on both of those things and created jazz music, which is what I call American classical music or American CLASSIC music. Carlos heard all those things and took them and did something else with them. It’s a nice back and forth influence, if you will, for what we come up with for this record. It’s really incredible. “That record is coming out. Prior to that, my record will be released. I’m really, really proud of the music that we’re doing. I recorded a lot of music with some musicians. There’s SO MUCH music at this point that I have basically two sides of the record. One is going to be, for the most part, instrumental. The second side is featuring my vocal debut. Those songs are more on a commercial/pop side, where the instrumental part is very

electric and kind of a jazz/rock/funk vibe. Both sides feature a guitar-heavy roster. “John McLaughlin is on one track on each side, so he’s on one instrumental and one vocal track. Carlos is on both sides. Vernon Reid is on the instrumental side, as is Kurt Hammet. So it’s really got those heavy hitters on guitar. “On the second side, with the main vocal things, they were produced by Narada Michael Walden, who is in his own right a great drummer, but he’s also a very great producer as well. Narada is very sweet! A very kind individual. Wonderful to work with.” How does Cindy want to be remembered, and what does she hope her legacy is? “I have a song on my new record called ‘Change Is in Your Hands.’ I believe that it’s a true title. I believe that we can all make change happen, and we’re all responsible for it happening or not happening. I want to be an instrument for change for the good; change for the better; change for the higher level of awareness; change for the higher level of everyone’s life circumstances. It’s not the ‘crabs in a barrel,’ and I know that that exists, especially in our society. But I don’t take on the energy of the crab in the barrel. I just take the energy of upgrading and uplifting. National Juried Exhibition of 2019 in the Upper Galleries The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present its 13th annual National Juried Exhibition, a new exhibition featuring selected works from 43 artists throughout the United States. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists working in a variety of media such as photography, acrylic, pencil, fibers, oil, paper, and more. More than $1,000 in cash awards will be announced at a brief awards ceremony on February 1 at 6 pm. A Man Who Thought in Color: The Pat Roddy Collection in the Main Gallery & Atrium A benefit for the Arts & Heritage Fund The Arts & Culture Alliance presents more than 50 paintings created by and from the personal collection of James Patrick Roddy, III as a benefit for the Arts & Heritage Fund. The exhibition includes an additional reception, sale, and live auction on Saturday, February 23. Roddy graduated from the Baylor School in Chattanooga and attended the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He ran the Roddy Coca-Cola Bottling Company most of his life, and his family said that he always sketched while on the phone. After he retired in 1993, Roddy began painting and took part in exhibitions hosted by the Tennessee Watercolor Society and the South Carolina Watercolor Society. He loved his painting and used many

mediums, including watercolors and oils. The Roddy family has also donated artwork collected by Pat Roddy during his lifetime. This exhibition will include pieces created by Pat Roddy, as well as a selection of pieces from his personal collection. Sales from this exhibit benefit the Arts & Heritage Fund. Since 2012, the Arts & Heritage Fund has supported individual artists and made general operating support grants to qualified arts and culture non-profits in Knoxville, helping them make an even greater economic and educational impact on the community. As the only united arts fund in the country that grants out 100% of funds raised, the Arts & Heritage Fund has distributed more than $2.6 million to local artists and arts and culture organizations in its first seven years. Every penny of the artwork purchased from the Roddy Collection will go directly into grants to local artists and nonprofit arts and culture organizations. This exhibition and benefit are made possible through the generosity of Joseph (Jim) Roddy, Patrick Roddy, John-David Roddy, and Kate Roddy Willis, the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children, and Dorothy Roddy, the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife. Debbie Whelan: Dancing Pots and Whimsical Clocks in the Display Case This exhibition features a collection of whimsical porcelain clocks and functional dancing pots from local artist Debbie Whelan Debbie Whelan. All pieces are hand thrown of porcelain, as well as white and brown high-fire stoneware. Many pieces are altered after being thrown: Squished, pushed, darted, pinched, clay taken away, clay added. All glazes and slips are hand mixed and are created by altering recipes to achieve different colors and textures. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Chef de Cuisine Ashleigh Shanti, 28-year-old chef and certified sommelier who has worked at some of the world’s best restaurants, is joined in the kitchen by children and grandchildren of The Block’s former business owners.

Hotel Arras Brings Two Restaurants

Asheville’s famed Art Deco skyline will get a new icon and four-star luxury property when Hotel Arras opens this spring. In addition to a completely new Art Deco façade for Asheville’s tallest building, the 128-room hotel will offer an extensive food focus with two restaurants by local chef Peter Pollay. Bargello will be a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with hand-made pastas, ovenfired pizzas, and large-format meats meant to be shared like roasted rack of lamb and heritage pork shoulder. The second space, District 42, will be a more casual spot with outdoor seating, small bites, and handcrafted cocktails.

East Fork, the pottery studio founded near Asheville in 2009 by Alex Matisse (greatgrandson of French painter Henri Matisse), has opened a new ceramics manufacturing facility in Biltmore Village that will increase their production capacity by 800% by 2020. The new facility bridges the gap between commerce and community engagement, where the public will be invited to interact with East Fork’s process, people, and culture through tours, community events, and classes.

Asheville Art Museum re-opens this spring with a new, state-of-the-art building that features education facilities, an art library, a lecture and performance space, a new ArtPLAYce for families and children, and the addition of a rooftop sculpture terrace and cafe. The opening exhibition “Appalachia Now!” is a survey of contemporary art in Southern Appalachia, highlighting 50 emerging artists from the region. Diana Wortham Theatre has been transformed into The Wortham Center offering new experiences, including two new theaters for more intimate performances and a totally revamped entrance and courtyard. A museum illuminating the legend of iconoclastic Black Mountain College (19331957) has moved to the heart of downtown Asheville. Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center re-opened along the greenery and Art Deco architecture of Pack Square Park. One of Asheville’s most beloved festivals gets a bricks and mortar location downtown when LEAF Global Arts Center opens late 2019, with educational experiences for guests rooted in music, art, community, and culture via a mini-theater and global immersion room using virtual reality, unique musical instruments, and a small stage for performances and interactive artist workstations.

Tennis Stars Return: The Fed Cup Tennis Tournament that brought Serena and Venus Williams to Asheville in 2018 returns in 2019 with a First Round tie competition between the USA and Australia. Fed Cup, the world’s largest annual international team competition in women’s sport, brings a best-of-five match series to Asheville February 9-10. New Outdoor Adventures at Biltmore: Ride the remote trails and roads of America’s Largest Home via electric recumbent tricycle on the Outrider Tour, experience the thrill of a raptor flying to your hand with a new falconry offering, or fly fish from a kayak. Whitewater SUP: New for the 2019 season, Wai Mauna Asheville SUP Tours bring Asheville’s newest outdoor sports trend to visitors with Intro to Whitewater SUP classes, a two-day course (six hours total) that teaches skills like reading water, catching eddies, and river surfing. Also, new for 2019, Wai Mauna is set to offer half-day adventure trips to surrounding mountain communities like Lake Lure and Saluda. Yoga Hikes: Leading yoga, meditation, and hiking experiences in the mountains surrounding Asheville, Namaste in Nature offers public and private tours for folks wanting a deeper connection with the nature around them. All guided hikes include a waterfall or mountain summit view and meditation and yoga instruction for all skill levels.

Triple the Chocolate: Just opened, the

new French Broad Chocolate Factory in the RAMP (River Arts Makers Place) Studios offers daily tours, a chocolate museum and a view of the sweet bean-to-bar treats being made. With this new location – also home to artists, Ginger’s Revenge (alcoholic ginger beer brewery), and Spicewalla (spice factory from Chef Meherwan Irani) – the beloved chocolatiers triple their production. Prehistoric Appalachian Pandas: The Western North Carolina Nature Center’s Prehistoric Appalachia Project comes to life with a new red panda exhibit. An ancient ancestor of the endangered animal, the Bristol’s Panda, was once prevalent in the region. The male and female pair go on display February 14. Also, check out the new entrance at the Nature Center, with new exhibits and an events plaza. Serafina and the Seven Stars: The fourth installment of local author Robert Beatty’s best-selling mystery-thriller series hits bookstores this summer. Serafina and the Seven Stars, focusing on the young fictional girl who protects Biltmore, has Serafina facing a dark and dangerous mystery to save her friend, Braeden Vanderbilt.

Hands-on Electronica: Opening downtown, the Moogseum will celebrate the life of Bob Moog, inventor of the Moog Synthesizer that revolutionized almost every genre of music. The Moogseum opens April 1 with bays of synthesizers, Theremins, and effect pedals that allow people to explore the science behind electronic music, a Young Inventors Lab where children can create their own circuit board, exhibit space, and an archival center of rare documents and photos. New Album Unites Symphony + Grammy Award-winning Bluegrass: The Grammy Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers re-imagine their catalog with the Asheville Symphony and music scene giants. The new album, recorded at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Studios, includes arrangements by Jonathan Sacks, who has worked on many Disney films, and orchestra conductor Michael Bearden, who is currently the music director for Lady Gaga and has worked with Michael Jackson and Madonna. Green Book Site Gets New Life: A probable Asheville Green Book site, the Southside neighborhood’s landmark Rabbit’s Motel was opened in the 1940s and hosted legendary black celebrities like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Richard Pryor during segregation. Local chef Clarence Robinson plans to open a soul food restaurant at the space, also home to the forthcoming SoundSpace project (Asheville’s first fullfledged music practice facility) by Claude Coleman Jr. of the band Ween. When he asked why, I explained that it has been my experience, as well as the experience of a great many of our clients, that a growing number of potentially new customers choose to conduct business exclusively via text or email. This is particularly true of many younger entrepreneurs. It seems that they have chosen to conduct their businesses in a generic world. While perhaps appearing efficient on the surface, just imagine how this generic environment deprives these same entrepreneurs of the very relationships that might have helped their businesses to prosper. Don’t ignore the power of the human touch, as genuine relationships will trump any advancements in technology.

ABOUT DR. DOPPELT

Dr. Matthew Doppelt, a board-certified dermatologist in Knoxville, earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, in 1991 and completed a master’s program in physiology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1992. He then graduated from Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1997. Dr. Doppelt completed an Internal Medicine internship at the Hospital of Saint Raphael – a major teaching affiliate of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1998. He finished an Osteopathic rotating internship, as well as an additional year of Internal Medicine residency, at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Florida, in 2000. He then returned to Nova Southeastern University, where he completed his Dermatology residency and served in the capacity of Chief Resident in 2003.
