BEING AN

entrepreneur now for more than 35 years and knowing what is required to start and remain in business, I am a big supporter of the small business community. Anyone who truly embraces entrepreneurship has experienced the emotional roller coaster of managing and growing Photo by D. It takes passion, determination, discipline, and delayed gratification, along with a financial plan and a solid marketing strategy, to create and sustain a business. This is not for the weak of heart.

Voted Knoxville's #1 Interior Designer by City View Magazine!

Interior Design Shae Design Studio is a full-service interior design firm that custom designs homes from concept to completion in East TN. We have garnered a reputation for creating beautifully balanced spaces that feel refreshingly modern and endlessly classic. We create custom interiors for full new builds as well as renovations that will stand the test of time. Based out of Knoxville, our team has designed hundreds of projects. Our experience has led us to develop a trusted process to help our clients navigate each step. Our designers collaborate from start to finish - from the floor plan development, interior drawings, custom cabinetry, finishes, furniture selections, window treatments, styling, and installation.

Does Shae Design Studio have a showroom?

Yes... We have a beautiful showroom with furniture, lighting, accessories, rugs, art, mirrors, curtains, flooring, cabinetry, and so much more!

Our designers present all the elements of the space - each piece selected is meant to be beautiful and functional. Our goal is to merge the design style, budget, and wishes of our client to create a functionally luxurious space. Generally our projects are completed in phases based on the budget and timeline of our client.

How much does a custom design cost?

If our client is starting from scratch, each room design can cost anywhere from $14,000-$25,000 (on average). For example, a living room design would typically include sofas/sectional, accent chairs, accent tables, a rug, lighting fixture, large wall art, accessories, pillows, window treatments, and even updated hardware. You then add on design time and installation cost. There are many moving parts that may seem overwhelming at first, but the end result of a beautifully finished space make the effort worth it.

Why buy furniture from Shae Design Studio?

Modern Design & Timeless Appeal

At Shae Design Studio, we represent exclusive, high-quality designer furniture. You won’t find our product or our level of design services at big box retailers. The specialty of our brand is something we’re proud of. The prices reflected in today’s article are based on our clients, our extensive experience in interior design, and familiarity with product manufacturing. Our design team will always seek to work within your budget, and we also seek to make sure our clients get what they are paying for. We are always willing to explain which pieces you should invest more in and which items you can invest less in. We really do care about what pieces are placed in your home and want the experience to be as enjoyable as possible.

Design Team It definitely takes a team to help a space come to life! Shae's hand is evident in each project, and each designer brings a fresh perspective to the table. This collaboration allows for each design to feel unique and C O P Y R I intentional. GHT PORTAL TECH 2023

Dogwood Arts Launches Face Mask Fundraiser Buy a Mask, Donate Art Kits to Kids in Need

DOGWOOD

ARTS offers a new way to support the arts and keep yourself healthy with limited edition dogwood print face masks. Masks come in two colors and are available for $20 online at www.shop.dogwoodarts.com, while supplies last. For every mask sold, Dogwood Arts will donate two Art Kits to kids in need through the Art Kits for Kids program. To date, Dogwood Arts has compiled and distributed 750 Art Kits through non-profit organizations that already aid youth in East Tennessee, including Boys & Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley, Centro Hispano, the YWCA, Knox County Head Start, and the Change Center. The fundraiser will support the expansion of the Art Kit program, allowing Dogwood Arts to reach more kids and partner with additional organizations that serve communities in need. About the Art Kits for Kids Program Every child d eser ves ac cess to c reative opportunities and art education regardless of their financial circumstances. Time spent creating art has a tremendous positive impact on child development, but unfortunately, many children in our community do not have the resources necessary to enjoy art at home. Our Art Kits help change that by providing a variety of age-appropriate supplies like crayons, colored pencils, markers, modeling clay, coloring pages, construction paper, scissors, pencils, pencil sharpeners, glue, pens, and notepads, and more. About the Face Masks Each mask was handmade in Knoxville by Prestige Cleaners. Masks are washable, reusable, and made of 3-ply fabric, with an outer layer of tightly woven cotton and a removable filter insert designed for enhanced protection. The masks are not medical devices or products and are not meant to take the place of N-95 respirators or surgical masks. Dogwood Arts makes no warranties or implies that the masks prevent the infection or the transmission of viruses and diseases. If companies or individuals are interested in supporting the Art Kit for Kids program, Dogwood Arts is also seeking donations of bulk art or school supplies such as pencils, note pads, pens, paper, stickers, markers, etc. Monetary donations can also be sent by check or online at https://bit.ly/ artkitdonation. 100% of donations received through this program will go to purchase Art Kit materials. For more information about the program, contact Sherry Jenkins, Executive Director of Dogwood Arts, at sjenkins@dogwoodarts.com or 865-246-4397. 8

ANY OF US haven’t spent this much time at home since childhood. When we were kids, we embraced our confined quarters by constructing different domains within remember building a fort in the living room? Take a look around your own house (since you’re probably there already) and dream of what mini-spaces can be transformed into fun and functional areas that will bring pleasure long after we’re out and about again. Here are four ideas to spark your creativity: 1. Calm Down Through Crafting Get away from it all by assembling a space that will relieve stress while fueling your artistic passions. Take inventory of your supply stash to plan the proper storage spaces, and map out the type of area you’ll need to design your best work. Add an ergonomic chair and safe and efficient LED lights to brighten up your creative outlook. 2. Handle Things in a Home Office Working on the dining room table can only last so long. Pick a quiet room with a door and begin adding components that will help you dive into work without distractions. Keep your area space-efficient by using the

wall near your desk for shelving or cabinets, and hang a magnetic dry-erase board to list and keep track of your goals. 3. Loosen Up in a Library Carve out space for a home library where you can display and read your treasured tomes. Install floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on either side of a fireplace or along one wall of a cozy bedroom. Design the shelf heights to fit your books and cherished mementos. Add a comfortable chair, peaceful plants, and a floor lamp for the perfect reading escape. 4. Bundle Your Best Sentiments If your gift wrapping is known for being a present in itself, set up a designated station to indulge your talent. The enviable space

perfect for Christmas use will be handy all year ‘round, containing special tissue paper trays, ribbon racks, and drawers designed to hold colorful wrapping papers. The convenient area will also come in handy when boxing up online order returns. Use your imagination to create “grown up” spaces that will make you feel like a kid again. Johnson Architecture Project Marble Hall Earns AIA East Tennessee Merit Award has earned recognition for a third time for its re-imagining of Marble Hall at Lakeshore Park. The East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects presented the company with a merit award on May 1. Johnson Architecture received the distinction in the category of renovation and restoration for its work on the historic chapel. AIA East Tennessee presented its annual Design Awards online in 2020 because of coronavirus precautions with a live video reveal of the 12 winners from 34 project submissions. Johnson Architecture previously earned awards for the preservation project from Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Historical Society. “Designing a new look and function for Marble Hall while preserving its character was an honor for our firm,” said Daryl Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Architecture. “The recognition by our peers is especially gratifying. This historical site has become a place for people to gather and reflect and enjoy the beauty of Lakeshore Park.” The Lakeshore Park board and landscape 10

JOHNSON ARCHITECTURE

architect Ross Fowler hired Johnson Architecture to restore Marble Hall. Denark Construction handled the renovation. The AIA judges said Marble Hall became “a thoughtful modification of a dignified vintage structure and will doubtless contribute to the public’s enjoyment of the facility in its new incarnation.” The judges also pointed out the “bold design moves,” such as removing exterior walls, and that the supporting pavilion and restrooms are “equally impressive and well-executed.” The classic architectural identity was kept intact while part of the “skin” was peeled away to expose the simple elegance of the 3,367-square-foot structure. The existing

Tennessee marble cladding remained, as well as the structural wooden frame and ceiling and the intricate rose window. The design also included new, adjacent public restrooms and a 1,008-square-foot Marble Hall Pavilion, which features materials reflective of its counterpart. Marble Hall originally was constructed in 1958 as a chapel for the Eastern State Psychiatric Hospital, later renamed Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, and is one of the few remaining buildings on the property from that era. Following the closure of the institute in 2012, the State of Tennessee conveyed the property to the City of Knoxville. Lakeshore Park now draws thousands of visitors annually.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing... the Dustless Way

“M

Y GOOD FRIENDS, Cha ndra a nd Stephen, recommended Europea n Fine Ha rdwood Floors to me,” sa id Knoxville area resident Amelia Daniels. “They had recently refinished the hardwood floors in an area home, and I remembered how beautiful their floors looked. “We purchased a custom home that was built in the late ‘90s. The finish on the hardwood floors appeared to be the original stain.” A me l i a met w it h E u r op e a n F i ne Hardwood Floors owner, Valera Tomescu, and agreed on the work to be performed. “Valera not only sanded our hardwood floors, but he also replaced flooring that had been damaged throughout the years,” she said. “He also converted the master bedroom from carpet to hardwood flooring. We were thrilled that he could match the floors exactly, and it now appears as if it’s been that way all along. “Valera was incredible. He and his wife, Svetlana, took careful measurements during the quoting process. They answered my questions and made recommendations based on their years of experience and industry knowledge. Valera also started the job when he said he would, and he finished

Jason Hardy

within the estimated time frame. We were not living inside the home while the work was being completed, but we would pop over almost daily to find Valera there early in the morning and very late into the evening. His work ethic is commendable. “When Valera says there won’t be any dust during the sanding process, he means it. He is so thorough and does a meticulous job while removing the dust as he goes. Valera and his team use high-capacity vacuums located outside your home to safely remove all dust resulting from the refinishing process. “When it came to choosing a stain, he gave me three options based on my description of what I wanted. I couldn’t be happier with the finish. We have two staircases, including a catwalk balcony, and the handrails he stained to match the floors are stunning.

AFTER “I would absolutely recommend European Fine Hardwood Floors to others. It is tempting when tackling a remodel to cut corners here and there, but after having worked with a true professional like Valera, I am so glad we went with him! In addition to being a fine craftsman, Valera is also a great father. We had the pleasure of getting to know his sons on occasion. Valera and Svetlana are doing a wonderful job raising them.”

Knoxville Opera Selects Jason Hardy as New Interim Executive Director

EFFECTIVE JULY 1,

Knoxville Opera is pleased to welcome Jason Hardy as its Interim Executive Director. After a nationwide search, the Knoxville Opera Board, Executive Director Search Committee, Board Chair Trey Coleman, and Chair-elect Eden McNabb Bishop are excited to have Jason Hardy on board for the 2020-2021 season. Jason was selected for the position from a strong group of applicants based on his collaborative spirit and creative fundraising strengths, as well as his experience as Chief Advancement Officer at Opera Memphis and as Managing Director at OperaDelaware. Maestro Brian Salesky will continue as the company’s Artistic Director after previously holding the titles of both Executive Director and Artistic Director for the past 15 years. “The company has long wanted to make these two separate positions,” said Eden 12

McNabb Bishop. “It is thanks to Brian and his strong fiscal leadership that we are able to make this move even in light of the COVID19 situation. We feel that Jason is focused on the future and will work to strengthen Knoxville Opera’s community presence and contributions beyond the walls of the opera house. Hardy is also, much like the Maestro, strongly dedicated to outreach and education. That sounds like a perfect partnership to me.” “I am looking forward to welcoming Jason Hardy to the Knoxville Opera family and supporting him in expanding our company’s service to the community,” said Maestro Salesky. “I am excited about Knoxville Opera’s potential to advance an art form that positively impacts the way we connect and engage with each other and with our community,” said Hardy. “I am committed to building upon the foundations of

success that Knoxville Opera has achieved over the years, with a focus on the company’s artistic vitality and its role as an authentic, innovative, and collaborative civic asset.” Hardy began his career as an operatic bass-baritone but always had an eye towards business. He received his BA in Music from Emory University. While there he also completed a two-year independent study and thesis on “The Business of Music” in collaboration with the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree program. Hardy went on to earn his Masters of Music at The Peabody Conservatory, where he also received an Artist Diploma in Vocal Performance. His passion for the art form became a desire to see regional opera not just succeed but thrive, and he began his work in opera administration to that end. Knoxville Opera’s 2020-2021 season will be announced in upcoming weeks.

UV Safety Awareness

B

EING OUTSIDE

and enjoying the fresh air is a great way to stay active and rejuvenated, but before you step out into the sunlight, learn more about the potential dangers it may pose. July is the month of UV Safety Awareness, and with temperatures this summer expected to be above average, learning and taking preventative steps is crucial. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation are invisible rays that mainly come from the sun. There are two types of UV rays. UVA rays have the least energy, causing aging and indirect damage to DNA, and they are mainly linked to long-term skin damage like wrinkles. UVB rays have more energy and can damage DNA in cells directly, causing most skin cancers and are the main cause of sunburns. These rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. While enjoying the outdoors, it is important to be aware of your exposure and ways to prevent damage. • Wear sunscreen – apply broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to protect from both types of UV rays, even when cloudy • Protective clothing – cover your skin with long sleeves, pants, and a hat if possible • Stay in the shade – take a break from the sun in the shade • Wear sunglasses – UV rays can lead to eye problems UV radiation can cause more than skin and eye damage. It can lead to other health problems such as a weakened immune system, making it harder to fight off infection. This is particularly dangerous for the elderly. But in smaller doses, sunlight can be beneficial. Sun exposure increases serotonin levels linked to boosting your mood and helping you feel calm. The sun can increase Vitamin D levels as well, an important nutrient for your body. With the potential damage UV rays can cause, it’s important to stay vigilant. If you like being outside or taking walks, consider walking earlier in the day or in the evening, as UV rays are the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Before stepping outside to enjoy the beautiful grounds and walking trail at Parkview Senior Living, or wherever you choose to take your stroll, be certain to apply some sunscreen and throw on a hat.

Easily Overcome Anxious Moments at the Dentist

H

AVING FIRST begun her

search for a new family dentist online, Vicki Ailey found Heritage Family Dentistry. “They had all five-star reviews,” she said. “Heritage Family Dentistry is a wonderful practice. I have major ‘dental anxiety,’ and they always put me at ease. They treat you like family. Dr. Bradshaw and his team are very gentle and make sure you are comfortable throughout your entire procedure.” Vicki’s first procedure was a dental implant. Dental implants are fast becoming the preferred treatment option for patients with missing teeth. Most patients can’t tell the difference between dental implants and their natural teeth. And, more importantly, dental implants continue to promote healthy bone density in the jaw. In the absence of natural teeth or dental implants, bone density can deteriorate, often creating a sunken or premature aging appearance. “Dr. Bradshaw is also very informative,” said Vicki. “He takes the necessary time to explain everything in detail and always makes certain that you fully understand the recommended treatment plan and procedure. “Heritage Family Dentistry is the best dental office I have been to. I have moved often and have seen at least 10 dentists. I would absolutely recommend them to others. They are the best dentistry team I’ve

ever experienced.” Patients at Heritage Family Dentistry can further relax with warm neck wraps and their choice of soothing music or nature television. FOUR KEYS TO GETTING (AND STAYING) FIT… OVER FIFTY BY ANDREW HENDERSON, O W N E R O F F I T N E S S TO G E T H E R

T

HIS MORNING I felt every day

my age. A bruised rib from a kayaking mishap and a stiff knee from a biking accident had me tossing and turning all night. When I rose out of bed this morning, I thought, “This is what football players must feel like the day after a game.” It’s true – what used to take days to heal now takes weeks and sometimes months. But with the exception of my recent outdoor adventure miscues, I’m almost 50 and must admit, I feel pretty good. As a personal trainer for the last 24 years, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients over the age of 50. In fact, it’s who we specialize in helping the most. Here are four important lessons I’ve learned both from helping them and from being almost 50 myself. 1. Muscle is precious. According to the Harvard Medical School, after age 30, we can lose up to 5% of our muscle mass every decade. This process, known as sarcopenia, can be delayed by progressive resistance training (progressively trying lifting heavier weights to stimulate muscle growth). No matter your age, any exercise program must include a plan for increasing strength and power. And as our hormones change due to aging and sarcopenia rears it’s ugly head, strength training, as well as getting adequate protein intake, becomes vital. 2. Recovery matters. There’s a saying, “You don’t get stronger by exercising, you get stronger by recovering from exercise.” During exercise, we may break down muscle. Through recovery, those muscle fibers repair and get stronger. Some rules for recovery are: » Give the muscles that you train at least a 48 hour recovery window before training them again. » Leave a day or two in between high impact exercise like running to allow joint and connective tissue inflammation to reduce. This can help lower your chance of tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and other overuse injuries » Stay hydrated, eat plenty of healthy protein, and avoid inflammatory foods like refined carbs and alcohol. » Try to get at least eight hours of good sleep a night. 3. Consistency trumps everything. Too many times I’ve met folks wondering how they got to be overweight or so out of shape, and it almost always boils down

to one thing: Inconsistency. Whether it’s maintaining a reasonable exercise routine or following a realistic and healthy approach towards nutrition, being consistently good is better than being sporadically perfect. If it’s a workout or nutritional approach you can’t sustain for many years to come, than it’s probably not going to work for the long haul. Find a plan you can live with and that works, and don’t quit. 4. Don’t be so stiff. Strength training builds and preserves muscle. Cardiovascular training strengthens our heart and lungs and burns calories. But stretching allows us to continue to exercise safely for years to come. Connective tissue is much like a rubber band – as we age, it can get drier and more brittle. But much of this loss of flexibility is due to lack of use, not just age. But once we get to a certain age, it becomes more important for us to have an extended warm-up before exercise and cool down and

stretch afterwards. By staying active, keeping your muscles strong enough to move your joints through their full range of motion, and stretching or doing yoga, your body will be more limber, move more easily, and not hurt as much! These are by no means the only keys to staying fit over 50, but in my opinion, are some of the most important. Now back to putting that ice pack on my ribs.

FUEL YOUR FITNESS AT HOME: 5 TIPS AND TRICKS

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

F

ACE IT, finding time to achieve your

fitness goals while balancing work and home life can be a struggle. However, while many people are spending more time at home, here’s a great opportunity to start fresh with a new fitness routine. Here are some helpful tips for helping you live your best, healthiest life: 1. Create a realistic schedule It’s a lot easier to blow off your at-home workout than a one-on-one training session or group class. What’s the secret to success? Put your fitness routine on your calendar! Instead of telling yourself, “I’ll exercise after I’m done with work,” switch your thinking to, “I’ll exercise at 6 pm,” that way you’re more likely to hold yourself accountable. Protip: Make sure it’s actually written in your calendar and set an alarm to remind you. 2. Prioritize sleep To maximize the work you put in during exercise, be sure to get enough rest every night. A full night’s sleep aids your muscle growth, enhances muscle recovery, regulates weight management, and can help boost your metabolism. Turning off electronics and other distractions at least 30 minutes before bed helps you fall asleep faster and achieve a higher quality sleep. 3. Designate a fitness space You don’t need a full in-house gym to have a successful workout, but it is important to think about what you’ll be doing. Yoga, core exercises, or Pilates only require enough space for a yoga mat, whereas a cardio workout may need a larger area or 18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2020

harder surface. Consider your preferred activities before you set up your space and try to set up camp somewhere quiet with few distractions. 4. Stay hydrated Caffeinated energy drinks are a trendy pre-workout beverage, but they can lead to negative side effects like jitters and energy crashes. The best way to avoid cramps and fatigue is to drink water before, during, and after a workout. Sports drinks with electrolytes are a good option for highintensity exercise, but be mindful of their sugar content. 5. Add fueling ingredients to your diet Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist, Dawn Jackson Blatner, recommends incorporating nutrient-dense foods into your diet that support your fitness goals. “It’s important to fuel your body with high-quality ingredients all the time, but especially when you are being more active,” said Blatner. “For example, Eggland’s Best (EB) eggs make a perfect pre- or postworkout snack or meal because they offer superior nutrition compared to ordinary eggs at the grocery store. EB eggs contain six times more vitamin D and double the omega-3s compared to other eggs, which aid in muscle recovery and strengthening bones. Plus, they contain double the vitamin B12, which can help boost energy and keep you fueled throughout the day.” If you’re looking for a tasty and nutritious meal that will help keep your fitness goals on track, try this Fish Taco Bowl from Eggland’s Best.

EB Fish Taco Bowl Time: 25 minutes. Makes 6 servings. We Will Change Your Water It Will Change Your Life

David Brewster, Owner Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

We were recently able to help a family who was building a new home. When they started reading the owner’s manual to their new tankless water heater, they learned that their home’s existing hard water could void their water heater’s warranty. They then began to think about their other appliances and plumbing fixtures... their dishwasher, washing machine, ice maker, and all of their home’s new faucets. It just made good sense to add a Kinetico water system. At Aqua Clear Water Systems, we believe in prolonging and protecting your appliances.

Thank You for Allowing Our Family to Change Your Family’s Water and Your Lives for 15 Years

love the music that baby boomers love), then you’ve heard - and loved - the music of The Rascals. Songs like “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” jammed the airwaves back in the day. Even today we’ll stop and turn up the radio just a tad whenever those phenomenal songs come on our radios and streaming gadgets. The Rascals’ contribution to the soundtrack of our lives was rewarded in 1997 with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. These days you can enjoy the spirit of The Rascals by catching their keyboardist, Felix Cavaliere, who is wonderfully and brilliantly keeping the band’s spirit alive with a healthy tour schedule. Reaching Cavaliere at his Nashville home recently, I rung him up just as he was finishing his regular morning workout. Commending him on doing something that I really should be doing (especially during this pandemic), he replied, “I have no choice, man. I’m used to working out pretty hard. I haven’t been doing it. I’m feeling it. Let me tell you.” Cavaliere then told me about a new album he’s been working on. “It’s fun, man. We came up with an idea last year. I said, ‘Look, you know what? Why don’t we take five songs that influenced you, re-record those kinds of like as a tribute to people like Ray Charles and Ben E. King, and then write five new songs that shows the thread of influence?’ “We’re having a ball. I mean, I’m just really enjoying it, because I moved to Nashville in 1988-89 to write. I love to write. I love to use that part of my brain - the creativity part. So I get a chance to do that. I get a chance to play because, as I say, we started this before this all happened, so we got a good jump on it. So that’s the concept. 22

F YOU’RE a baby boomer (or at least

“But the whole thing is to keep busy mentally and physically right now. I was talking to you earlier about my exercise program. I’m really used to working pretty hard in the gyms and stuff like that. That’s taken its toll. Well, it’s the same thing for your brain. You’ve got to keep your mind going, otherwise you go to sleep. I’m not quite ready. I still enjoy what I do - tremendously.” I brought up the body of work that Cavaliere - especially with The Rascals - and his peers have recorded and that it has clearly stood the test of time while, seemingly, the more recent music seems to quickly fade from memory. I asked him what he attributes that to. “Yeah, there’s a lot of reasons for that,” he said. “First of all, the era that we were in. You have to understand that our competition, for want of a better word, were some of the best that ever lived. I mean, you got the Beatles

in there. You got the Stones in there. You got people like the Kinks and the Lovin’ Spoonful. The musical level, the creative ability, was very high. Kind of like in the art world during the Renaissance in France, when you had all these great impressionist paintings. That’s what we were experiencing. So the level was way up there, and the products were way up there. That’s the first thing and the easiest answer I can give you. “The other answer I can give you is the fact that we were on Atlantic Records, which I’m very proud to say. I understand that everybody knows they had to make money, but they had a very, very high kind of bar also for quality. They had some of the finest minds in the engineering world, with Tom Dowd and these people that were behind the scenes.” I concluded by asking Cavaliere how he wants to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy is. “Well, basically, I want to be remembered mostly as a musician and positive messages, peaceful messages, civil rights messages, and as a good father and parent and husband. That’s fine with me... I mean, you make a contribution, and all you really want is people to realize that this happened; you were part of it; enjoyed it. That’s what I kind of leave around, you know.” And that he definitely does. There is much more to this interview that you can read in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com , and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

5 Tips to Tidy Up Your Finances

I

B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

T H I N K W E can all admit

that the health pandemic and the incredible resulting economic shocks have given all of us pause, to think about our place in the world and how secure we really are – whether in our finances or in our good health. But good things can come from that kind of wake-up call, including the awareness that it might be time to do a little sprucing up in the area of your family’s finances. Here are five tips to get you started: 1. Take a look at your credit card statement and decide whether you’re really using all of those monthly subscription services that are so easy to sign up for. And how about that expensive cable or satellite bill? We cut ours from $140/month to $60/ month, and that feels really good. 2. If you noticed that you were spending a lot less on expensive restaurants and fancy coffee, be deliberate in continuing to save that new-found source of money. Invest $100/week for 10 years earning an average of 5%, and you’ll have a cool $67,425. 3. It’s time to review your legal planning, no matter how old you are. A will is important, yes, but so is a financial power of attorney, which allows a trusted person to manage your finances if you’re incapacitated. No one (not even your spouse) can access your individually-owned IRA or 401(k) without a power of attorney. And don’t forget about healthcare directives, too. Let’s make life easy for our loved ones if anything ever happens to us. 4. Check your IRA and 401(k) beneficiary designations. Keep in mind that beneficiary designation forms override the terms of your will. And if your beneficiary forms are blank or incorrectly completed, your account will go through your estate and probate process. This triggers critical tax consequences, and those accounts can be claimed by your creditors. 5. If the pandemic triggered some thoughts of “What would my family do if something happened to me?”, it’s time to look at your life insurance and your disability insurance. If the results are reassuring and your family is protected, that’s great news. If it unnerved you, then it’s time to take action. Personally, I took some time to review my family’s finances, and I found a few items to tidy up; I’ll bet you will, too. Call, email, or contact me on our website if you’d like to learn more.

Is Your Grout a Sponge?

HAT SAN DY STRIP of

grout between your tiles is a very important part of your tile. Without it, anything spilled on your floors would start an ecosystem of its own. Your grout is your first line of defense against soil, dirt, and liquids. A properly sealed grout line will protect the integrity of your floors, but a tile and grout floor that has not been sealed acts like a sponge, soaking up every nasty spill and particle of dirt it comes into contact with. New grout should always be properly sealed, cleaned regularly, and a new application of sealer should be applied every 12-24 months thereafter. Cleaning your grout can be tricky. Scrubbing the grout may remove dirt in the surface of the grout but not eliminate the stain. Stains can then creep back to the

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

surface again, causing frustration to the homeowner. Bathrooms pose the toughest challenge, since this room tends to be damp and provides a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and mildew. Chemicals can cause discoloration and break down the integrity of your grout, leading to costly repairs. In addition, marble, granite, and high gloss tiles are especially sensitive to some cleaners, which can lead to permanent damage. The best way to test whether your grout needs resealing is to place a few drops of water on the grout line and see if they remain on the grout surface or soak right in. If they disappear, it’s time to reseal. If you aren’t comfortable cleaning your grout, or if persistent stains are a concern, it’s time to call a professional. Surface Doc, inc. owner, John Fitzwilliam,

says he gets more requests for tile and grout cleaning than any other service his company offers. “We use a four-step restoration process combining high heat, eco-friendly emulsifiers, adjustable pressure, and contained suction,” he said. “Once a surface is deep cleaned and sanitized, I recommend a highquality sealer to keep it looking new.” Surface Doc uses patented tools that get down into the deep porous areas of your floors, and the result is remarkable. HILE YOU’VE BEEN

following the recommended “safe at home” and “social distancing” guidelines, you’ve likely discovered an even newer phenomenon – “spring cabin fever.” The symptoms are unmistakable. You find yourself streaming endlessly, and you’re becoming increasingly aware of that growing list of home projects that you’ve been conveniently postponing. Be honest. Have you’ve been postponing that family kitchen makeover? If it’s time to move forward with that new kitchen redesign, or perhaps a showcase kitchen for that new home you’ve been dreaming about, you’re in for a bit of a surprise. You’re about to discover that even custom kitchen cabinetry is, well, not exactly custom. Even so-called custom cabinets have design limitations. These limitations exist even with name brand cabinet manufacturers. Manufacturers design their custom cabinetry lines on standard component sizes. You will likely also have to select from limited hardware, color, and stain options. At Sticks 2 Stones Design, we’ve changed all that. That’s why we offer homeowners our proprietary Amish Select line of fully custom-built kitchen cabinetry. Today’s kitchens should be bold and imaginative. Why should you have to settle for custom cabinets that are less than custom? Kitchens are no longer places just for the family meal. Kitchens should inspire future gourmets, become a social gathering and entertainment centers for guests, and even a cherished place for those romantic dinners. With Amish Select, you’re in complete control of your kitchen design because we hand-craft each and every cabinet to your exact specifications. Your cabinet size, door profile, accent trim, colors, stains, and hardware are not limited to what the so-called custom cabinet manufacturers offer. We are the manufacturer, and we offer you limitless options. So why downgrade your dream kitchen when you can choose Amish Select Fine Handmade Cabinetry? At Sticks 2 Stones Design, we specialize in inspiring homeowners to “go one step beyond” when imaging and designing their dream kitchen. Overwhelmed? Don’t be. We’ll assist you every step of the way with layout, flow, lighting, colors, appliances, flooring, décor, electronics, and, of course, truly custom kitchen cabinetry. Planning a Successful Estate Sale E STATE SALES,

also referred to as tag sales in many areas of our country, are used to liquidate the personal possessions of an individual, family, or estate. These sales, which are growing in popularity, are generally the most efficient way to sell unneeded personal and household items resulting from the passing of a homeowner, downsizing, relocation, bankruptcy, or divorce. Although an efficient way to dispose of personal possessions, estate sales require a great deal of preparation that can seem overwhelming to many if you are unfamiliar with how to properly organize a sale of this scope. Much more involved than a yard or garage sale, a successful estate sale needs to be well organized. Items for sale should be divided into categories. Sales items are often catalogued. Displays are typically set up in the home with valuable items, particularly smaller pieces, displayed separately for security purposes. Next, you need to price your items, set your sale dates, advertise, then prepare yourself for the crowds of buyers. Sound daunting? An estate sale can easily become overwhelming, which is why a growing number of Tellico area residents are turning to the professionals at Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village for assistance in conducting an estate sale. At Premiere Consignment, we offer our clients a complete turnkey estate sale experience. We help organize, display, price, advertise, and sell those no longer needed personal and household items. We are with you every step of the way to make certain that your sale is the complete success you hoped it would be. At the end, the client is left with a check and a home that is cleared of every unwanted/unneeded item. There are other ways Premiere Consignment can help you, too. We can place remaining unsold items for sale in our Tellico Village retail showroom or use our extensive eBay sales platform to sell a variety of other sales items, such as collectibles, to buyers across the country and the world. Experienced in estate sales, why not let Premiere Consignment help you make your sale the success it deserves to be? means that you’re cleaning your home more often, don’t neglect your Oriental rugs. They experience a great deal of use over the course of a year, and no, simple vacuuming will not thoroughly remove all accumulated dirt and other contaminants. In fact, dirt and abrasive contaminants can actually damage your rug ’s natural fibers and organic dyes. Genuine, Oriental rug washing is the only proven way to thoroughly clean your home’s valuable rugs, and if you’re a pet owner, rug washing is an absolute necessity. Most Oriental rug customers think that the first goal of Oriental rug washing is to “clean” their rugs. The first goal should be to “safely” wash their rugs. Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-towall cousins. Oriental rugs are hand-woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be safely cleaned using today’s conventional carpet cleaning methods. These conventional cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning ’s West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, we pamper your rugs by using our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process, which assures you of both a thoroughly and safely cleaned rug. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit us online at www.superiorofknoxville. com and view our informative video to discover for yourself the Superior of Knoxville Oriental rug washing difference. For all of your Oriental rug washing needs, along with your upholstery and carpet cleaning projects this year, trust the one company that has put “superior” back into cleaning since 1985: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

O YOU CRINGE at the sight of your pitted and stained garage floor? Has it become unsafe with crumbling concrete, cracks, or slick spots caused by years of leaked oil? The garage is the first part of your house you see when arriving home and is often the largest room in the house. So to make the garage a safe extension of the home’s living space, homeowners are investing in concrete coatings for the garage. “There are options for garage flooring, but all are definitely not created equal,” explained Brian Falls, a co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville, the area’s most experienced garage flooring company. “The decision usually comes down to a choice between an epoxy or polyuera system. A polyurea flooring system, however, presents the most-advanced and durable coating in concrete flooring technology. It’s truly quality you can stand on.” Additional benefits of using a polyuera system for your garage floor include: Surface That Withstands Practically Everything From extreme pressure, heavy impacts, and spills, polyuera is strong and durable. It provides better protection than epoxy against chemicals commonly found in garages, like gasoline, auto fluids, and paint thinner. Its chemistry makes it more flexible and up to 20 times stronger than epoxy flooring. It is also UV resistant and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most importantly, unlike epoxy, it can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it resistant to hot tires lifting and peeling the coating. Makes Your Garage a Safer Place Used in combination with full coverage of polymer, paint flakes adds safety to your space. The combination creates a slip-resistant surface, reducing the chances of accidents when the floor is wet. The coating is also antibacterial, stain-resistant, and nontoxic. Fast-Curing and Long-Lasting This kind of garage floor coating takes only a few hours to harden and one day to be ready for use. Standard epoxy coating systems take three to five days to harden completely. PremierGarage’s polyuera floor coating, which retains it color and finish integrity, has a 10-year warranty. Easy Maintenance Spills clean up easily with a paper towel, but an occasional cleaning with just water and a small amount of vinegar will keep the floor looking brand new. Bottom line, a polyurea garage floor is definitely worth the investment and increases the value of your home. Yes, a garage floor can be both beautiful and strong!

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2020

With the sun stronger and the longer days, it’s time to rediscover the endless ways for you, your family, and friends to enjoy summertime fun right at home in your own backyard. But can you really enjoy your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? If your outdoor spaces don’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. While many homeowners across the country are making significant investments in their homes by creating outdoor “living areas” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weatherproof, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often prevent them from fully enjoying their home’s new outdoor family areas. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade while allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios, especially in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evening. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics of your home, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity is the variety of custom color and wood grain finishes that help to seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. Your screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces for a summertime of fun with friends and family, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Knox Heritage Spotlights Endangered Historic Places N

ATIONAL PRESERVATION

Month was in May, which was the perfect time to celebrate preservation success stories and to draw attention to places that remain endangered. Preservation success stories occur all year long. Last November, Knox Heritage celebrated many of these stories at our annual preservation awards event held at the Bijou Theatre. Projects such as the Campbell Station Inn in Farragut, the General Wilder House on Riverside Drive, and First Presbyterian Church downtown were recognized. Also recognized were exceptional volunteers and community partners, including former City of Knoxville Mayor Rogero and WBIR for their coverage of abandoned places. The complete list of award winners can be found at www.knoxheritage.org. The annual Knox Heritage Fragile and Fading list, traditionally released in May, spotlights significant properties and neighborhoods still in need of preservation strategies. The goal is to strengthen community advocacy and support in order to initiate change before these places are lost forever. Property owners, community leaders, citizens, and preservation professionals all play a role in overcoming the challenges these places face. The Knox Heritage mission is to preserve structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Historic preservation conserves resources, maintains beautiful architecture, sustains the local economy, creates new jobs, grows heritage tourism, stabilizes neighborhoods, and keeps our community connected with its shared history. This year we revisit the 2019 list and find forward movement with one, four places that are still very fragile, and three others that are fading fast and need the most urgent responses. Forward Movement The Eugenia Williams House on Lyons View Pike was designed for the owner in 1940 by her childhood friend, John Fanz Staub. Staub, a native Knoxvillian, is best known for designing homes for many influential Texans, with more than half of his design work located in Houston alone. The Regency-style home sits on 24 acres bordering the Tennessee River and still has most of its original design features intact. In 2019, the University of Tennessee obtained approval to sell the property and the Aslan Foundation placed the winning bid. Funds from the sale will start a University of Tennessee scholarship program named in honor of Eugenia 36

Williams’ father. Knox Heritage will hold a preservation easement on the house. Still Fragile The Fort Sanders Historic District is named for the Civil War-era Union bastion that once stood near the center of the neighborhood and several of Knoxville’s notable residents built houses in the area during the 1880s. Its close proximity to downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee makes it an ideal location for dense housing developments that are not part of the traditional streetscape. Many homes have been destroyed over the years either for new development or from neglect, as well as from poor renovation practices. The Knaffl-Stephens House on Speedway Circle is a c. 1880 Victorian home once located on Gay Street until the construction of the Andrew Johnson Hotel in 1926. It was originally home to art and portrait photographer Joseph Knaffl, best known for his 1899 portrait “Knaffl Madonna,” which has been reprinted thousands of times and is still used for Hallmark Christmas cards. The house has suffered from long-term neglect, and the last owners stripped the interior of much of its original character. Hope was renewed for its preservation when it was purchased in July 2019 by experienced preservation-minded developers. Work has yet to begin as details are being finalized. The Park City Historic District, most commonly known as Parkridge, was originally developed as a streetcar suburb in the 1890s. In 1990, more than 600 houses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Park City Historic District, and it contains one of the largest concentrations of houses designed by George Franklin Barber. While there is a trend of housing renovation taking place, too often these renovations are not sensitive to the historic character of the structures. In addition to inappropriate alterations, there are many neglected properties and occasional teardowns, particularly of ancillary structures that were once used for housing and contribute to the National Register district. Knox Heritage has announced an H-1 Overlay Grant Fund in partnership with the City of Knoxville’s Preservation Fund to financially assist low to moderate income homeowners with making repairs in compliance with neighborhood design guidelines. This circa 1945 Standard Knitting Mill building was once part of the largest textile and knitting mill in Knoxville, employing

more than 4,000 people. At one time, Standard produced more than one million garments a week and inspired Knoxville’s title as the “Underwear Capital of the World.” After years of an uncertain future for the remaining building of the Standard Knitting Mill complex, city officials and representatives from the new owner, WRS Inc., confirmed in December 2019 that the South Carolina real estate firm has bought the property for conversion into a mixed-use development. WRS Inc. is currently conducting environmental studies in preparation for environmental remediation and is working with Knox Heritage on nominating the complex for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Fading Fast Knoxville College was the first African American college in East Tennessee and hosted prominent figures such as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The historic buildings, with their fine craftsmanship and solid design, deserve to be restored and used again. Currently all campus buildings are condemned and suffering from a severe lack of maintenance. The Pryor Brown Garage is an early example of a mixed-use structure featuring parking decks along with several retail spaces along both Market Street and Church Avenue. The parking garage is a remarkable story of continuity of use on one site and is one of the oldest parking garages still standing in the United States. It’s currently unused and needs a redevelopment plan. Rule High School opened in the fall of 1927 and was named after Captain William Rule, a former Union Army Captain who went on to become the Mayor of Knoxville and publisher and editor of the Knoxville Journal. The school closed in 1991 and it languishes in a deteriorated state.

Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

July in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

WE HAVE MADE

it to the halfway point of the year, so it’s time for a checkup. How are things going in your yard? Some things in my yard are doing very well and some things are struggling, and I expect the same thing is happening for you. Many of you have done more work in your yard this spring than you ever have before, and they look beautiful! It has been a frustrating season, however. Temperature extremes and the current heat and humidity can make gardening a difficult chore instead of a relaxing pastime, but hang in there! Try to keep a good attitude, and let us know what we can do to help. Here is your suggested to-do list for the month: » Water is the most critical element of plant success, and it is always best to water in the morning. That leaves time for the excess moisture to evaporate off the leaves, thereby reducing the growth of fungus. I will also remind you (as I do every month) that sprinklers are great for grass and flowers but woefully inadequate

for trees and shrubs. Those will need their own zones or drip systems to make it through the summer. It is also critical that you know how much water is going to those plants. The easiest way is to put small empty cans (tuna size works well) in the zone and see how much water goes in them. Your goal is 1” per week, which will fill up those cans. If you are hand-watering, remember that most water hoses will put out five to six gallons per minute. Small plants may only need a gallon, but larger shrubs may need five gallons, and trees can take in 15 gallons or more. You can also place the hose at the base of the plant, turn it on a trickle, and leave it. I suggest you set a timer, because I have turned my yard into a swamp a couple of times. » What is your mulch situation? If you have sparse mulch, a fresh layer will keep temperature and moisture levels stable. Remember that you never need more than 3”, and you should never pile it around the trunk of your trees. Any hardwood mulch or pine straw will work fine. » There are definitely insects and

fungus among us! Keep a close eye on your plants so you can start treating at the first sign of damage. Please don’t get carried away, however. Not every bug is a harmful bug. Always start with the least toxic product first, and only escalate if that is ineffective. Dense evergreens like junipers and spruce will be aided by a good strong blast of the water hose weekly to knock out loose needles that harbor insects. Many fungal outbreaks can be treated with good hygiene. Remove infected leaves and make sure that you do not allow them to stay on the ground around the plant, as this just allows the fungal spores access to the soil. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering, and pull the mulch away if the area seems to be holding water. Dense shrubs like roses and laurels may benefit from careful pruning to improve air circulation. » 16 million Americans planted a veggie garden for the first time this year, and I feel bad for them. Mother Nature has not been kind. Furthermore, we are getting to the time of year where you are either getting a good harvest or you are doing the heart-breaking task of pulling up plants that have failed. If you are harvesting, keep it up so that they keep producing. Water regularly, but try very hard to avoid getting water on the leaves. Water at ground lever (a drip system is best), mulch to prevent splash, and remove leaves if they start looking spotty, twisted, or like a white powder was sprinkled on them. There are fungicides and insecticides that are safe to use on edibles, so stop by if you are having a problem. » How are your container gardens? Are they lush and full or straggly and ugly? Fertilize, trim, and deadhead plants to keep them healthy looking. If they are ugly, toss them in the compost and stop by for replacements. We keep a nice selection of larger plants through the summer for just that purpose. Life is too short to have ugly flowers. » Perennials may also need a little maintenance. Deadhead and cut back plants as needed. Pruning plants that get leggy (Joe Pye weed, ironweed, asters, and mums) will keep them from flopping. » Take care of the birds and they will take care of you. Keep feeders and birdbaths full and clean. Water is especially important during dry periods when mudpuddles dry up. Stop by and take a look at some of the beautiful things we have in our greenhouse and gift shop. Let us help you have a beautiful home!

The Wrinkled Shirt in Your Closet? It Has Something to Say

I

F YOUR CLOSET is too crowded and disorganized, you probably have several blouses or shirts that you never see because they are crammed in the corner or laying on the floor underneath other clothes. Well, if that shirt could write you a letter, this is probably what it would write: “I am really a nice-looking shirt. I fit you well. You used to love me, and you wore me to some of your most important meetings or dinner with friends. We looked so beautiful together. However, as time went by, I wasn’t the center of attention. I was pushed further and further back in your closet. I am feeling unloved and disrespected. You never look at me because you can’t see me! It’s dark and cramped back in the corner. And yes, I know I’m wrinkled, but you would be too if you were living in this crowded space where the other hangers are constantly stabbing me. You are to blame for my condition. If you just took the time to give me – and yourself – a new, organized closet system, we could both be happy. I can just see a new custom closet where I have glorious space to be my best self. I wouldn’t be a wrinkled mess, and

you would love me again. Please call Tailored Living of Knoxville and set up a free consultation. They can design a new closet and show you a 3D rendering of the design so you’ll know exactly where I will be placed. The sooner you call, the sooner you and I can be together again! P.S. Summer Celebration Lawn & Garden Show Postponed UT AgResearch Now to Host “Fall Celebration” in October

of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s Summer Celebration Lawn and Garden Show has been postponed until October 1. The annual gardening event, which takes place at the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Jackson, was previously scheduled for July 9 but will be delayed due to health and safety concerns for employees and visitors. Fall Celebration, as it will be called in 2020, coincides with the annual Fall Plant Sale, held at the West Tennessee AgResearch Center on the first Thursday of October. In addition to the plant sale, Fall Celebration will feature indoor garden talks, tours of the gardens and AgResearch Center, and cooking demonstrations from the UT Kitchen Divas. Due to limited personnel available in October, outdoor garden talks, exhibitor booths, and the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic will not be included on the program. “Fall Celebration will be different from the Summer Celebration program to which our regular visitors have grown accustomed,” said Bob Hayes, director of the West Tennessee A g R e s e a rc h a n d E d u ca t i o n Ce n t e r. “However, considering the circumstances, 40

for Fall Celebration, and more information about times and program agenda will be shared at a later date. Those interested are encouraged to visit the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center website at https://westtn.tennessee.edu or the UT Gardens, Jackson Facebook page for updates.

ADRIAN VANDENBERG BY RANDY PAT TERSON,BOOMEROCIT Y.COM

A

DOMINANT

band from the soundtrack of the ‘80s is the band Whitesnake. A key reason is the signature sound of their guitarist, Adrian Vandenberg, who managed to reflect some of the sounds of the ‘70s into the ‘80s with his magnificent guitar work. After the split-up of Whitesnake, Vandenberg has stayed busy with various projects. Most notably, his own selfnamed band has a new album, Shadows of the Night. It’s the kind of album you would expect from Vandenberg and his band. Boomerocity reached Vandenberg by phone at his home in Holland, and he had this to say about that album: “I suppose it sounds cliché, because everybody says it about their new album, but I’m really, really excited and very, very happy about it, because it turned out exactly as what I was hoping for. Which is like very organic, fresh, dynamic, straight-in-your-face rock without too much polishing like what happened in the ‘80s, as we all know. It was a lot of production and got very, very polished and lots of reverb as if we were all the way in the back of a big stadium. That was basically my hope that it would turn out like that, and it did!” Comparing the new album with past projects, Vandenberg said: “I had maybe a more specific plan about how I wanted it to work out, as far as dynamics, the content of it. It was – I wouldn’t say relatively easy, but in a way it was. It fell together very naturally. And I was really, really happy to find the drummer and the bass player in the band because they play about 90% of the album. Rudy Sarzo and Brian Tichy, they play two songs, and all the other stuff is played by Koen Herfst and Randy van der Elsen – the bass player and the drummer. I’m really, really happy with the drummer.” Shifting gears, I asked Vandenberg to tell about his lead singer, Ronnie Romero. “I was blown away by this small Chilean guy singing like Dio in his best years,” he said. “At the same time, singing songs like Soldier of Fortune that were originally, of course, sung by Coverdale, and he sang it just as well. I got in touch with him. He was really enthusiastic, because he does quite a lot of session stuff, but he would prefer to be like in a main band like this, basically, and not sing everybody else’s music all the time, like he does with all these other projects. So it came at a good time for him, too.” What song would Vandenberg point to as a calling card for the entire album? “Well, people who may never have heard of me, I would think if they hear Burning Heart, they will probably go, ‘Oh, yeah, I know that song’. But then I think a strong calling card would be ‘Shadows of the Night’ because it has all the elements that makes this band that strong. You know, it’s got great singing, amazing drumming. It’s got the shortest guitar solo being the modest guy I am, the shortest guitar solo on the album.” As for near-term plans, Vandenberg said, “I’m dying to take it on the road. I’m pretty confident that by the end of the year, it’s even 42

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2020

possible to start touring again. I wouldn’t be surprised either if they had to take steps to make sure that everybody has to wear a mask or something. Maybe by that time there’s a combination of medication that can cure everybody. That could be possible, too. So that’s definitely one thing that I’m hoping for and relying on. “That’s another thing that I would like to be remembered for, is that I always musically did what I believed in such a way to stay close to my own heart; to make music that is honest and not contrived and that’s not written in order to try to make money with it. I’ve never made any decision in my life based on financial motivations. You have to make your money, of course. You have to make a certain amount of money to live a life that gives you the freedom to create. For me, my living style is not very different than it used to be 40 years ago when I was just an art student. For me, the ultimate freedom is the freedom to create, whether I live in a oneroom apartment or whether I live in the south of France in whatever kind of place.” Vandenberg had much more to say, and you can read it all on www. boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

CORONAVIRUS TRAVEL TIPS:

Flexibility and Cleanliness Matter Most When Planning a Future Trip

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

I

T ’S N O SEC R E T coronavirus

(COVID -19) has disrupted many aspects of our daily lives, including travel. Between international restrictions and statewide stay-at-home mandates, wanderlust is undoubtedly on the rise. An Expedia poll of 1,500 U.S. residents, conducted between May 4 and 8, 2020, shows people are feeling more vacation deprived than they did before the outbreak. The poll also revealed roughly 70% of Americans intend to travel at some point in the next 12 months. At the end of the day, the decision to travel will largely come down to preference and what government restrictions may or may not be in place. Regardless, everyone should feel secure and comfortable in their choices when it’s ok to get out there again. To give travelers additional peace of mind, here are Expedia’s top tips for planning and booking any travel: » As a first step, check the latest global health and travel advisories for your intended destination. As the situation continues to change for each state and country, ensure your vacation spot is accepting non-residents or international travelers. It’s also beneficial to know if there are any quarantine periods still required, as that might influence where 46

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2020

you go and the length of your stay. » Consider booking refundable hotels rather than non-refundable ones. In the same poll, more than 70% of Americans expressed concern about COVID-19 impacting their future travel plans and another 60% indicated that their travel plans have already been changed or canceled due to the pandemic. To make it easier for travelers to search for flexible options, Expedia updated their website so you can filter by hotels that offer free cancellation. If at any point their plans change, they’re able to receive a full refund. Note: Some of these hotels require you to cancel at least 24-48 hours before check-in, be sure to check the details before booking. » Remember to check applicable terms and conditions, especially when booking flights. To provide travelers with the most flexibility, Expedia recently added in a filter where travelers can sort their results to airlines that are waiving any change fees for future bookings. » During the last couple of years, most major airlines rolled out new “ basic economy” or “saver” fares. These fares are cheaper, but they’re also a lot more restrictive and generally do not permit any changes or cancellation. Expedia wants to make sure travelers book the fare that has the best value

for them, so they’ve made updates to the site in recent months to call out what is and what is not included in each fare throughout the booking process. Before checking out, travelers can easily compare fares and see what makes the most sense for them based on their needs and preferences. » Sites like Expedia have always offered travelers the flexibility to make changes or cancel their flight booking within 24 hours of purchase. Whether it was because of an error (who hasn’t accidentally booked p.m. flights when they really meant to select a.m.?) or because a trip is no longer needed, travelers can cancel without penalty, regardless of fare type or airline, during the grace period. » Most Americans are concerned about their health and cleanliness when they resume travel, and the industry is regularly revealing new sanitation measures to help combat the spread of infectious diseases. Expedia plans to display these hygiene amenities on its site so travelers can feel comfortable leaving home; they’ll know whether a hotel property has enhanced cleaning processes or if an airline requires passengers to wear face masks. It’s also a good idea to start bringing items like hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes on future vacations like you would a phone charger.

He’s Not My DOG... He’s My KID!

W

HILE PRACTICING “safer

at home” and social distancing protocols during the last several months, our deep bond with our family dogs has become increasingly obvious. Around every corner, under our feet, under our work desk, there are our dogs. Our dogs bring energy to our existence, making our lives happier with their steady gaze and simple motives. We learn to respond to each other’s stimuli; we better understand each other. Scientists are discovering mounting evidence of emotional behavior in dogs. They find blood pressure lowers in both dogs and humans when in each other’s presence. We at Ms. C’s handle each dog individually with no leashes or collars. Parents ask, “How do you do that?” It’s a simple concept of “building the dog ’s trust.” We manage our canine guests through voice commands combined with touching and love. We invest time with our guests from 6 am to (and often beyond) 6 pm daily. We operate the exact

same schedule seven days per week, including weekends and major holidays. This creates a feeling of compassion and closeness with your dog. At Ms. C’s, dogs are our kids, too. We understand each other, and we develop that bond scientists find is possible. We enjoy giving tours and introducing new clients to our philosophies and protocol. Our website (MsCsBedandBiscuits.com) has our lobby hours. Please come out for a tour anytime during our lobby hours. No appointment is needed for a tour. We also have a section on our website that has the most frequently asked questions, which we encourage you to review before your visit. We also encourage you to bring all of your other questions with you when you come for your tour.

will ultimately determine whether your small business will succeed or not, it remains a mystery to me why so many entrepreneurs appear fixated on other, more traditional areas of concern. Your entire business, if it is to achieve its full potential for success, must be totally customer focused. Your website, marketing efforts, hours of operation, promotions, and different client payment options are just a few of the many areas where a customer centered business owner will allocate the largest portion of their company’s resources. Far too many small business owners obsess over their competition, pricing strategies, and product and service mixes. Not that these areas aren’t important, but if they become a greater priority than knowing and understanding your customer inside out, you may have just become your company’s largest obstacle to success. Success in business is not merely achieved by duplicating the efforts of a successful competitor. While the success of a competitor’s business may provide helpful insights that can

EVOLVE

NON-INVASIVE CONTOURING TREATMENT

L

OOKING FOR a non-invasive way

to tighten loose skin, enhance muscle tone, smooth cellulite, and contour your body? If so, it’s time to Evolve. Evolve by Inmode is here to help you tone and tighten - all without an invasive procedure and with minimal downtime. Evolve by Inmode offers non-surgical body contouring through its three different procedures: Evolve Tite, Evolve Trim, and Evolve Tone. All three Evolve procedures are now available at Southeastern Dermatology. Learn more about this exciting new noninvasive, thermal skin and body treatment. What is Evolve Technology? Evolve Tite and Evolve Trim both rely on the same basic technology to give you the results you want to shape and smooth your body. Evolve technology relies on radio frequency (RF) energy to deliver heat and results. When applied by skilled medical professionals - like Dr. Doppelt and his staff - the RF energy in Evolve by Inmode can deliver target fat reduction, skin tightening and cellulite reduction. Evolve can be used in many areas of the body. In fact, you might be able to target multiple body areas during a single session. Areas of the body that respond well to Evolve technology include: » Abdomen » Arms » Hips » Thighs » Waist and flank Evolve by Inmode comes in three different treatments: Evolve Tite, Evolve Trim, and Evolve Tone. While Evolve Tite and Evolve Trim rely on RF technology, Evolve Tone uses electromagnetic technology. Evolve Tite Evolve Tite remodels the skin by tightening loose or sagging areas. It is a non-invasive procedure that can be done in Dr. Doppelt’s office during a lunch break. This quick and easy procedure can be customized to meet your specific concerns. It can treat loose skin on the tummy after pregnancy or weight loss, loose skin on the upper arms, and other trouble spots. The Evolve Tite treatment is delivered via a hands-free applicator. Applicators can be applied to multiple body areas at once. The Evolve Tite procedure was developed under very strict medical guidelines and has been optimized to provide maximum results, even

when multiple areas are targeted. Evolve Tite works by using radiofrequency technology to apply volumetric heat to the skin’s subdermal layers. The radiofrequency technology ensures the heat is delivered uniformly, so no area of the application area is over or under treated. How do you know if you’re a good candidate for Evolve Tite? Evolve Tite is recommended for anyone who seeks natural-looking skin remodeling. It can give skin a tighter, more youthful appearance. It is also important to know that there is no downtime or recovery period with Evolve Tite. The procedure is quick and painless, and you can return to regular activities immediately. Dr. Doppelt and his staff can tell you how many Evolve Tite treatments you’ll need to achieve your aesthetic goals. Evolve Trim While Evolve Tite targets loose and sagging skin, Evolve Trim targets dimpled skin and cellulite. Evolve Trim offers a unique solution to a common problem and provides a noninvasive alternative to liposuction. This treatment will help reshape the body and smooth the appearance of the skin. Evolve Trim is delivered by a medical professional with a hands-free applicator. Multiple body areas can be targeted at once. Evolve Trim can be used to provide a slimmer, smoother appearance to the: » Back » Abdomen » Arms » Knees » Thighs » And other areas of the body The Evolve Trim treatment works by using radiofrequency technology to apply volumetric heat deep into the skin’s subdermal layers. The heat is combined with a vacuum and controlled energy pulses to deliver uniform results across the treatment area. Because the heat is delivered to the subdermal layers of the skin with RF energy, the patient experiences no discomfort or burning sensations. The treatment requires no downtime and you may return to regular

activities immediately after treatment. You might need multiple Evolve Trim treatments to achieve your aesthetic goals. Dr. Doppelt can help you develop a treatment plan to give you the results you want without pain or downtime. You will see visible results as soon as your first few sessions. Evolve Tone Sometimes you don’t get the results you want no matter how many reps you do in the gym or miles you log running on the road. If you’re seeking to tighten and tone your body and muscles, Evolve Tone might be the answer. Evolve Tone can add definition and enhance your natural physique. It is a non-invasive treatment that requires no downtime and won’t leave you with unsightly scars. Evolve Tone can increase muscle strength and tone. Evolve Tone relies on a different technology than Evolve Tite or Evolve Trim. Evolve Tone uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate the muscles and cause involuntary contractions. Your muscles contract in a way that replicates a workout - sweat not required. The treatment can be used on many areas of the body, including: » Abdomen » Flanks » Buttocks Like other Evolve treatments, Evolve Tone is painless and involves no downtime. The number of sessions required depends on your goals and can be determined by Dr. Doppelt. Are you ready to take a step toward a more youthful appearance? Tighten up, smooth it out, and tone it up with Evolve treatments at Southeastern Dermatology. No matter whether you choose Evolve Tite, Evolve Trim, or Evolve Tone, we can provide a customized treatment plan to help you reach your aesthetic goals.
