M O N T H was devoted to honoring moms, and in June, we set aside a day to honor dads and all that they do for their families. My dad held a very special place in my heart, and although he has been gone for a number of years, he is still sorely missed. As a youngster growing up, my Photo by D. Roberts Photography dad was always there for both of his daughters. He would do anything for us, whether it was playing catch in the backyard after his hard day at work, playing a board game in the evening, or just treating us to a day out in the park topped off with an ice cream sundae. My dad was the best. Later, when I was in school and needed help with my studies, my dad would be there to quiz me in math and spelling. He always encouraged education, and I know he wanted both of his daughters to go to college. It was a proud day when he saw me graduate.

The influence my dad had on me has helped me in school, at work, and in business. Dad was always organized and detail oriented. He wrote everything down on sticky notes. He did not leave anything to chance. Those qualities were carried on to the planning of his very last days. He had sticky notes for us on most of his paperwork directing us on how to handle all his final affairs down to the very music to play at his memorial service. I have come to appreciate his attention to detail, which has served me well in life, and I also don’t leave anything to chance. I do use a lot of sticky notes, too. My dad was my hero. He had integrity, loyalty, devotion, commitment, and he loved his family above anything else. Take time to reflect on the influence your dad has had on your life. I hope it is as positive as mine. Happy Father’s Day!

HILE pharmacological activity
can be traced back to as early as the 16th Century BC, today’s retail pharmacies play an even more critical role in the healthcare of our nation’s estimated 330 million citizens. Americans are served by approximately 67,000 pharmacies in the United States, which are located in a variety of retail settings, including standalone pharmacies, grocery, and department stores. With the continued consolidation of services in today’s healthcare industry, it’s not surprising that more than 40% of all pharmacies are owned by only 25 pharmacy chains. Pharmacies nowadays are very much different than the pharmacies many of us remember as children, where most pharmacies were privately owned by a druggist behind the counter. The druggist and the store’s staff had a personal relationship with all their customers. They were neighbors. They attended the same churches and participated in the same 6

civic activities. Just as importantly, they had a professional relationship with their local family physician. Today most of us select our pharmacy primarily on the basis of convenience. That’s not to say we wouldn’t choose a different pharmacy if they provided a higher level of service – it’s just that most pharmacies today have become “generic.” If the name of the pharmacy wasn’t displayed prominently throughout the store, you likely couldn’t tell one pharmacy from the other. This was the experience of local pharmacist and entrepreneur, Ellen Phillips, who recently decided to really shake things up in the retail pharmaceutical marketplace right here in Knoxville. Armed with 20 years of firsthand experience as a pharmacist, Ellen and her compassionate and caring team of highly trained associates are preparing to launch believeRX, which is designed to dramatically change the way you view your neighborhood pharmacy. Holistic and
interactive, believeRX is committed to helping each of you to “Live Your Best Life.” In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we’re excited to bring you this interview with Ellen, believeRX co-owner and founder, as well as Gabriella Bowers, believeRX co-owner. We’re confident you’ll be as enthusiastic about believeRX and its potential health benefits for you and your family as we are. EK: Provide our readers with a brief bio of yourself, including your education and professional experience. Ellen: I’m from Church Hill, Tennessee. I graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 1998 with a Pharm D degree. I have both retail and hospital pharmacy experience, with some clinical pharmacy experience, and have been a pharmacy manager for a large corporate retail chain. I’ve been a Pharmacy Preceptor for several Pharmacy Schools, and in 2016, I was awarded the Pharmacist Excellence Award from my Photo by Marie Kamp, Red Door Photography
employer. I’m also a Certified Health Coach. EK: Describe some of your past “what if ” moments as a pharmacist employed by a pharmaceutical chain where you identified lost opportunities to better serve your customers. Ellen: There were “what if ” moments and missed opportunities with patients I had when working for a large retail chain, where you are required to do things their way. You follow an established routine that doesn’t encourage creativity or thinking outside the box. While I’m thankful for these real life experiences, I’m also grateful for the many opportunities I had to imagine how the services we provided could be improved upon to better serve the needs of our customers. One terminally ill patient was having difficulty getting his required medications from his doctor’s office. I told him that his time was the most important thing to me. I helped him get the needed medications. Once placed in a hospice, he could no longer come to the pharmacy anymore, but his mother came to get his medication. After he passed, she came to me and said, “You know why we came here, don’t you? We live in Crossville, and my son refused to allow the hospice to send his prescription anywhere else.” That was a defining moment for me in my career and the foundation upon which we want to build believeRX upon. I’m grateful for the team I have now that came from them for the most part, as well as the patients I’ve met throughout the years. I have patients who have been with me since the beginning of my career, and they place their trust in me to this day! EK: You’ve expressed your enthusiasm for the team of professionals you have assembled to launch believeRX. Let’s introduce them to our readers. Ellen: My experience in retail pharmacy introduced me to many of the area’s best pharmaceutical professionals from which we have assembled our amazing team. Our team includes: Gabriella Bowers – Gabby is a Knoxville native and Farragut High School graduate. She is also co-owner of believeRX. She received an associate degree in arts and science and is a Certified Pharmacy Technician with more than 12 years of pharmaceutical experience. Gabby is also a Personal Health Coach and teaches group fitness classes at several area gyms. Her certifications include Yoga, Primary Aerobic Instructor, Barre, and Les Mills Body Pump. She believes in keeping a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Gabby is married with four children. Shadrielle Robbins – Shadrielle attended Northwestern State University in Louisiana and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a Biomedical Concentration.
We began working together 2015, and I was immediately impressed with her ability to handle difficult situations and maintain composure. Shadrielle has a strong work ethic and is currently attending South College of Pharmacy, where she will graduate in May 2021 with a Pharm D degree. We are proud of the fact that Shadrielle is believeRX’s first pharmacy intern. Carla White – Carla, a Certified Pharmacy Technician, began working with me in 1998. She is also a Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Dialysis Technician. Carla is definitely a people person. I remain amazed at how many patients ask for her personally. She is also becoming a Certified Health Coach. Carla is the mother of twin girls and a boy. Megan Dukes Tingen – Megan is a 2012 graduate of the University of Tennessee and has work experience in event coordination and human resources. A few years ago she decided to join the medical field and pursue a career in nursing. She will graduate from South College with her BSN this fall. When she learned that I was going to open my own pharmacy, Megan knew that she wanted to be a part of my team, because we both value preventative healthcare. She is excited to contribute her nursing knowledge to the pharmacy and our patients. EK: Many on your team are moms. That has to make you more sensitive to the families you serve. Gabby: Both Ellen and I are moms and are very sensitive to the unique needs of other families. There have been many times in the past where moms just like you have needed something from the pharmacy, especially for little ones, but a trip to the pharmacy was made even more difficult because of a sick child. That’s why believeRX will offer after-hours delivery services. Moms understand moms! EK: Our readers will be excited to learn about where your first pharmacy will be located and your planned opening date. Gabby: believeRX will be located at 9627 Countryside Center Lane in Knoxville. Our building is directly across from Food City on Middlebrook. We are scheduled to open in the second half of June 2019, with our grand opening later in the summer. EK: What differences from the typical generic pharmacy will customers experience at believeRX? Can you provide some examples? Ellen: believeRX is committed to providing a service level that exceeds your expectations. Clear communication skills, being attentive to customers, and possessing a thorough knowledge of all of our products are just a few of the ways we’ll provide the highest level customer service. Established patients can use our after-hours drop box for their prescription. Call the after-hours phone number and go home to rest. We’ll take care of the rest, and once your prescription is ready, we’ll personally deliver it directly to your home. » Specialty medications that are high-cost oral or injectable medications used to treat complex chronic conditions: Personalized pharmacist-patient relationship, handling, and distribution are necessary to ensure appropriate administration. Home delivery is also available. » Vaccinations (including travel vaccines): We will also notify you when you are due for vaccinations in order to avoid immunization gaps. TVA Grant Funds Park Programs for Boys & Girls Club

Smokies has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to fund summer programs in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) for urban youth in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley. Funds provided by TVA will pay transportation expenses for elementary aged students in Knoxville to visit GSMNP this summer. These summer programs and activities will expose young people to the natural wonders of the Great Smoky Mountains, including science and social studies education initiatives that reinforce Tennessee school curricula. Park Rangers will go on-site to the Boys & Girls Clubs to present fun, hands-on activities that help the children become comfortable with the rangers and begin learning about the park’s natural ecosystems. The program also provides a summer day camp experience with one-day in-park field trips to learn about the cultural history of the area and the park’s natural biodiversity. Most of the students participating in this program are from Title I schools, which include students near or below the poverty level, qualifying for the free or reduced lunch program, and are at the most risk of failure. Their participation in the program will be at no cost to them or their families. Friends of 8

the Smokies anticipates reaching more than 1,500 students through the summer program for urban youth in 2019. “We are excited to fund this summer education program in the Smokies again this year,” said Tim Chandler, Friends of the Smokies Executive Director & CEO. “These kids are the next generation of park users and stewards, so we will jump at any chance we have to reach them and introduce them to the wonders of the natural world in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.” Friends of the Smokies will provide an additional $5,000 towards the program through proceeds from its specialty license plate program in Tennessee. For an additional $35 annual fee, drivers all across Tennessee can support programs like this with a specialty license plate featuring a black bear and sunset over the Great Smoky Mountains. McKenry Receives National Closet Design Award
C
H R I S M C K E N R Y , Chief Organizing Officer of Closets by McKenry, is this year’s recipient of the Designer of the Year Award for Closets from the Interior Design Society. The announcement was made at the IDS Awards Gala in Palm Springs on May 4th. Presented by celebrity designers Carson Kressley and Thom Filicia, the award recognizes the creation McKenry did for the Master Closet in the 2018 Alzheimer’s Tennessee Designer Home and Garden Tour. “While it was a privilege to have been chosen to participate in the inaugural Home and Garden Tour, this national recognition for my closet design is truly humbling,” said Chris. This year the Interior Design Society had the largest ever number of submissions from across the county, and each award was chosen by a panel of 16 leaders in the interior design field. When asked about the specifics of this project, McKenry shared, “The homeowners’ needs were considered, as well as the craftsman style of the home. The footprint of the master closet totaled 175 square feet. In the closet, gray melamine with mission fronts complemented the master bath design. Antique mirrors were inserted into the doors
above the custom dresser, which was topped with white quartz. “The entry is in her Lady’s Boutique and features an island with hamper and jewelry drawers under a white quartz top. Above hanging garment and shoe shelves are high cabinets available to store out-of-season items. “The smaller Gentleman’s Haberdashery contains open cabinets for his hanging garments with shoe storage and drawers and cabinets above for long-term storage behind doors. This area leads to the laundry, which is divided by an 8’ dark stained pocket door. For this reason, the entire system is 101” high and features base and thin top trim to not compete with the crown molding in the room.” Closets by McKenry was opened
in 2015 after Chris returned to Knoxville after 15 years in Los Angeles, where he was a professional organizer. McKenry said that when he was in LA, he often found that new closets did not always meet the storage needs of the client. “I just love the beauty of an organized home, and my first step to design is a thorough assessment of needs,” he said, adding that the last step is the follow-up after installation.

U.S. Para-cycling National Championships to Be Held in Conjunction with USA Cycling Road and Track National Championships

a n d U . S . Paralympics Cycling recently announced the locations for the Paracycling Road Race, Time Trial, and Track National Championships. The events will be held in conjunction with USA Cycling’s Pro Road and Elite Track National Championships taking place in June and July in Knoxville. “We are happy to partner with U.S. Paralympics Cycling to incorporate Para-cycling events into our National Championships,” said Chuck Hodge, Chief of Racing and Events for USA Cycling, “Para-cyclists are an important part of our community, and we hope to continue to use events such as our National Championships to give their programs greater visibility while working together to grow the sport of cycling at all levels and abilities.” 12

Para athletes will complete one, two, or three laps of the course depending on their classification. The professional men and women will compete on a modified version of the same course but with an additional 100+ feet of elevation thrown in for extra challenge and a few daring downhills. The Para-cycling Road Race will be held Saturday, June 29, through the heart of
Knoxville. Racers will use the same section of the James White Parkway that pro cyclists will use during Sunday’s USA Pro Road Championships. Merging onto the James White from Riverside Drive, racers will loop the parkway from Riverside to Sevierville Pike multiple times before rocketing back down to Riverside Drive and a fast technical finish at Gov. Ned McWherter Park. “We are thrilled to welcome these Para athletes to East Tennessee,” said Kim Bumpas, President of Visit Knoxville. “This is our third consecutive year to host the USA Cycling Time Trial, Criterium, and Pro Road Championships. The ability to include additional Championships with U.S. Paralympics Cycling creates an incredible fan experience in downtown Knoxville. Theatre presents a live stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel “James and the Giant Peach,” dramatized by Richard R. George. The play will be performed through June 16: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm at the Knoxville Children’s Theatre, located at 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville. A magical peach! An imprisoned boy! Insect friends! An incredible journey! This amazing adventure of James Henry Trotter will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape. Roald Dahl’s story comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization that reveals the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises. You will see James (as he cleverly gets the Peach out of danger), the wise Old-Green-Grasshopper, and the pessimistic Earthworm. You will also see James’ mean Aunt Spiker and cruel Aunt Sponge come to a suitably sticky end.
The play is performed by 16 talented young actors from ages 8 to 14. Daniel Snoderly plays James Trotter. The insects he meets in the peach pit are played by Diego Almieda (Old Green Grasshopper), Lily Segars
(Centipede), Aubrey Jones (Spider), Leeland Robbins (Ladybug), Ben-Giovanni Miller (Earthworm), Cooper Delamain (Silkworm), and Julia Lance (Glowworm). The rest of the cast features Lydia Burchett, Corbin Fram, Miley Jenkins, Ethan Johnson, Millie Lovett, Truman Ball, Braxxton Sommers, and Micheal Wolitz. The play is directed by KCT alumna, Jennifer Cunic. The production team includes Set Designer Boone Sommers, a West High School sophomore, and Maryville High School sophomore Eric McGhee, who designed the lights. Costumes are designed by West High students Jaden Branson, Sophie Foster, and Madelyn White. The sound designer is Max Harper, a freshman and L&N Stem Academy. This is an amazing place.” Operated by University of Tennessee Extension, Lone Oaks Farm is a working farm and 4-H youth development and conference center in Middleton, Tennessee. The farm currently hosts
4-H camps, field trips, and STEM education programs. Future plans for the development of Lone Oaks Farm include the construction of a 4-H STEM and Farm Center, a 4-H camp facility, a shotgun clay target shooting complex, a hospitality complex, and an adult leadership center. Barbecue sandwiches, chips, drinks, and desserts will be available for purchase, and games will be set up for kids to enjoy as well. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers will be on site to answer questions about fish populations, techniques, and more. A fishing license will not be required on this day. In preparation for extra hot days, make cranberry juice ice cubes or ice pops in your freezer. 3. Have a cranberry party The robust cranberry can handle some heat, so create a zesty salsa for your next party. Cranberry and Cilantro Quinoa Salad Ingredients » 2 cups water » Pinch salt » 1 cup quinoa, rinsed » 1 cup sweetened, dried cranberries » 1/2 cup minced carrots » 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper » 1/2 cup yellow bell pepper » 3 tablespoons finely chopped red onion » 3 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro » 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice » 1 tablespoon vegetable oil » 1/4 teaspoon salt » Pinch ground red pepper Directions In a small saucepan, bring water and pinch of salt to a boil over high heat. Stir in quinoa, reduce heat, and bring to a low simmer. Cover and cook until all liquid is absorbed (about 13 minutes). Remove from heat and transfer to a medium bowl. Cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. To the bowl of quinoa, stir in cranberries, carrots, peppers, onion, and cilantro until mixed. In a small bowl, mix together lime juice, oil, salt, and ground red pepper and pour over quinoa-cranberry mixture; toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse Theatre Camp T
HE OAK RIDGE Junior Playhouse Theatre Camp will be held during two consecutive weeks in June: Week 1, June 10 through June 14, will be for rising grades 3 to 5 and 9 to 12. Week 2, June 17 through June 21, will be for rising grades 6 to 8. Both weeks will have the same format. The camp will run from 9 am to 3 pm for the first four days and will go longer on Friday, as it will end with a showcase performance at 5 pm on the stage of the Oak Ridge Playhouse. Courtney Minton and Rollin Prince are experienced theatre teachers, as well as area performers. Both teachers are excited to provide a creative, encouraging, and collaborative environment where students can build confidence while pushing their abilities and also having fun. With a camp theme this year of “Theatre Through the Ages,” campers will, through games, exercises, and instruction, travel through the history of theatre during the course of their week. The showcase on Friday will give the campers the experience of performing on the historic Oak Ridge Playhouse stage while also enabling their friends and family to see what they’ve learned and accomplished. Dollywood Officially Opens Largest Expansion in Park History

solidified its place among the nation’s premier family destinations as Dolly Parton officially opened Wildwood Grove, the largest expansion in park history. Parton opened the fascinating new land to visitors ready to enjoy its 11 thrilling new experiences. During an early morning media event, Parton shared the inspiration and dreams that led to the creation of Wildwood Grove, calling the area the new standard for Dollywood. At $37 million, Wildwood Grove is Dollywood theme park’s largest capital investment ever and is the first new area added to Dollywood since Wilderness Pass in 2008. The biggest adventure in Dollywood’s history provides guests of all sizes unique experiences to enjoy together as a family. “When I was a little girl growing up in the hills of the Smoky Mountains, I’d often let my imagination just run away – something I still do now – dreaming these big dreams about what it’d be like to venture off with a family of bears in to the woods or how fun it would be to hitch a ride with the butterflies and dragonflies,” said Parton. “All us kids would splash and play in the creeks and ponds around home and have these daydreams about the world around us, and that’s what’s so special about Wildwood Grove. We’ve been able to create a new area to allow families to experience some of those exact dreams we all had when we were little. Wildwood Grove is so special to me because so many of the same daydreams and imaginations from my childhood have now found a perfect place at my Dollywood. more than familiar with the iconic band from the 60s and early 70s, Creedence Clearwater revival. Their music catalog includes Proud Mary, Who’ll Stop the Rain, and many other songs that occupy the soundtrack of baby boomers’ youth. They were veterans of Woodstock and other huge festivals of 1969. Wikipedia states that, just in the U.S., they’ve sold 28 million records. All of this led up to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 – 21 years after the band broke up on pursued years of litigation between Stu Cook and Doug Clifford and their lead singer/guitarist, John Fogerty. For more than 26 years, Stu and Doug toured as Creedence Clearwater Revisited (the gem of one of the post-breakup lawsuits), bringing back musical memories to long-time fans and new fans alike. That is, until their recent announcement that they are retiring from the road after this year. That news came on the heels of a re-hashed announcement that Stu and Doug have settled their pending lawsuits with John Fogerty. I reached out to Stu to have my second interview with him to chat about these announcements. When I called Stu at his home, we caught up on news and small talk before I mentioned the retirement announcement and asked if East Tennessee was going to wind up being on their itinerary. “No, we don’t play in East Tennessee,” he said. “We haven’t been in East Tennessee in quite a while. We never know where we’re going. We have virtually no say in it. The offers come in, and our booking agency, William Morris, and our management try 30

to figure out – they put the dart board on the wall then they decide: ‘Which dates they can possibly make it from A to B to C without killing themselves?’ We call it ‘No heroics,’ ha ha! If we can’t get there safely overnight, we probably shouldn’t take the gig.” Later in our conversation, when we chatted about the “Revisited” incarnation of CCR, Stu indicated, “Twenty-five. This is year 25 of ‘Revisited.’ Who knew that it would go on like that? At the end of last year, we said, ‘The playing is as great as ever. The audience is as great as ever. And, of course, the music is supreme for us. The road is just not much fun.’ Twenty-five straight years of straight… you know, most bands take a break. Most artists tour behind product – new product or recent product. We’re touring on our legacy. We do it every year, but when you start going back to the same place multiple times and it wasn’t your favorite place to begin with, the travel has really gotten unromantic. “ We’re not retiring from the music business, as such, or from music, or from being CCR, or even Creedence Clearwater Revisited. We’re just taking a break from the road which, at our age, this will likely be the last year of regular revisited appearances anywhere.” We then segued into the subjects of the litigation settlement and the retirement announcement. Why this? Why now? “Well, the settlement actually occurred a couple of years ago,” he said. “The settlement I refer to is our most recent legal battle. It started at the end of 2014 and then went through 2015 and 2016. I think we settled at the beginning of 2017. It really had no connection at all that I can call on or pull
down and attach to our decision to get off the road. But, that said, to your question as to what it feels like, what our settlement looks like: At this point, it’s just a business arrangement, but it’s far more than we ever had in the last 45 years. We have a company together, and we hope to do some interesting things with it. “In the meantime, other projects have been in the wings and are now about to take stage. I believe that Creedence’s full performance, the quartet’s first and full performance at Royal Albert Hall, is going to be released. It’s a DVD. Coming up also I believe this year, because this is the 50th anniversary, of course, of Woodstock. We’re trying to get together a complete set to be released on DVD as well. We weren’t in the movie. Hopefully people will be able to judge for themselves how good that performance was. I think it was one of the best of the event. A journeyman set under any circumstances, but Woodstock was not your normal circumstance.” Organize a group to travel where CCR is playing this year. has certainly been temperamental this spring. I’m not going to complain, however, because overall it was beautiful. It seemed as if we moved from one blooming plant to another! June is a usually a lovely month, but we are starting to transition into summer. This means that you need to get your yard (and yourself ) prepared for the heat and humidity. » Go take a walk around first and see what is going on. All sorts of insects are hatching out and fungal spores are popping open. Weeds are growing 3’ seemingly overnight. Critters have begun digging in your yard for grubs. Deer and rabbits wait until plants start looking very nice and then they munch them down to the ground. Make notes about your concerns and then stop by and let us help you treat them! » Although I ask you to watch out for bugs, you really need to stop freaking out every time you see one. If it isn’t eating your plant, leave it alone. Many insects are beneficial. Ladybugs are a pain if they
get in your house, but they can clean all the aphids off a tomato in a day. Spiders are a great way to keep the general insect population down, and other insects actually battle the bad guys. We are decimating our pollinators and creating a generation of bugs that are immune to insecticides by overusing chemical controls. Treat the plant if it is being damaged, but always use the least toxic products first before escalating if necessary. » Good hygiene is very important for both insect and disease treatment. Keep plants clear of debris (spent blooms and old leaves) that will serve as a hiding place for eggs or spores. It is also a good idea to remove diseased leaves from the ground around the plant as they fall so that fungal spores don’t redeposit into the soil. » Good air circulation is also critical, so don’t plant things too close together. We see this often with things like Leyland Cypress that were planted as a barrier or Cherry Laurels planted against a house. It is much better for it to look a bit sparse at first!

» Weeds are trying to take over the world. I have battled weeds this spring more than I ever have, and some of them are downright vicious. Homemade weed sprays are effective on shallow rooted weeds, but dandelions and wild onions are going to laugh at you. Wait until the ground is soft after a rain and use a trowel or weeder to get the entire root out. » You can still plant shrubs, perennials, and annuals. Larger shrubs and trees will require extra care, because it is more stressful for them to get established when it gets hot. Watering will be critical, and a sprinkler isn’t going to be adequate for them. You must supplement with drip irrigation or hand watering. Call us if you have questions. » Did you plant vegetables? Be vigilant against caterpillars, cutworms, and other insects that can destroy your crop. Remove what you can and treat with the least toxic product possible. Diatomaceous Earth will take care of many crawling bugs, and safer soap will help with flying bugs. Fungal diseases are harder to treat and can be caused by too much water, watering above ground rather than at soil level, and failure to rotate crops. Call us or your Agricultural Extension Agent if you have problems that you don’t know how to treat. » Keep harvesting veggies as they are ready so they won’t stop producing. If you vastly overestimated the amount that your family could consume, consider donating the excess to food pantries! » Container gardens and baskets need a little love. Trim, treat, and fertilize to keep them full and healthy. Flowers that are prolific bloomers like spreading petunias and calibrachoa tend to pull all the nutrients out of the soil quickly and should be fertilizd with a mild strength mix weekly. Perennials and foliage plants do not require fertilizer as often. » Perennials and annuals that have gotten leggy can be cut back so they will fill out. Fall blooming perennials such as asters and mums should be cut back so they won’t flop. You can also cut back any remaining foliage on spring bulbs if they have yellowed. » Be kind to the birds and bees. We need them to survive. Cease using toxic chemicals and learn to work with nature instead of fighting her. We are still getting fresh loads of plants weekly. Stop by and see what is new and beautiful!

Fruits of the Backyard Field Day is June 11 Growers Invited for Plant Sale and Sessions on Fruit, Cucumbers, and Nuts

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Bigleaf Hydrangea

HE GENUS HYDRANGEA
is expansive and includes approximately 1,000 species, hybrids, and cultivars, which can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs, small trees, or climbers. Hydrangea is the second most popular deciduous shrub in the United States and is produced in more than 1,500 nurseries nationwide. Hydrangeas commonly produced commercially are deciduous shrubs, selected for their showy inflorescence (flower), with some native to the U.S., while others are native to Asia. Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is native to Japan and Korea and known typically for blue or pink mounds of flowers, known as hortensias, or mopheads. However, the other recognized horticultural group of H. macrophylla, known as lacecaps, though less showy, are equally beautiful and form a ring of large, sterile flowers and an inner core of small, fertile flowers. Certain selections of both lacecaps and mopheads change flower color depending on aluminum availability, which is affected by soil pH. Tennessee’s more acidic soils make it somewhat challenging to produce pink blooms, which are associated with a basic soil pH. You can add lime to lower the pH (for pinker blooms) or aluminum sulfate to further acidify the soil (for blue blooms.) After planting, wait a year to see what color the blooms come out, and then add desired soil amendments little by little. Keep in mind that some cultivars will bloom white regardless of aluminum levels. Plants typically bloom in Tennessee beginning in late May through June and are considered hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 6 to 9. However, hardiness varies among cultivars and selection must be made carefully to match the location. Cold injury to the flower buds and improper pruning are the usual reasons for flower failure. Bigleaf hydrangeas form flower buds during late summer and fall and can be damaged when exposed to low winter temperatures. They will, however, tolerate root freeze. Additionally, H. macrophylla don’t prefer our summer heat and humidity, so be sure to plant them somewhere that gets dappled shade or morning sun. Early morning shade can cause foliage to stay wet longer, increasing the risk of leafspot, so morning sun can be important for that reason as well. If you see the leaves curling up in the afternoon sun, it could be a heat defense mechanism, so don’t get out the hose to water until you check to see if the 50

soil is dry. H. macrophylla often suffers from overwatering and root rot, which can manifest in yellow foliage, chlorosis and weak root systems, particularly in the southeastern U.S. summers. Because of their nutritional requirements, hydrangeas often don’t like being in containers. They often will grow four to six feet high and wide and look beautiful planted en masse. You can look for remontant or “repeat bloom” varieties that bloom on both old and new growth, such as the mophead cultivars ‘Blushing Bride’, ‘David Ramsey’, ‘Endless Summer’, ‘Mini Penny’, ‘Nantucket Blue’, ‘Oak Hill’, and ‘Penny Mac’. ‘Twist-andShout’ is the only remontant lacecap type. Some bigleaf hydrangea cultivars are “less remontant” than others and will re-bloom best if pruned after the first flush of flowers or after adding some fertilizer. Some of the top-performing mopheads (not
including remontant selections) out of 250 selections evaluated by Plant Introductions Inc. in Watkinsville, Ga., are ‘All Summer Beauty,’ ‘Ami Pasquier,’ ‘Frillibet,’ ‘Générale Vicomtesse de Vibraye,’ ‘Mme. Emile Mouillère,’ ‘Mousseline’, and ‘Nikko Blue.’ Top-performing lacecap selections are ‘Blue Wave,’ ‘Lanarth White,’ ‘Lilacina,’ ‘Veitchii’, and ‘White Wave.’ The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. 2019 East Tennessee Endangered Places Announced
EACH
YEAR the East Tennessee P r e s e r v a t i o n A l l i a n c e ( E T PA ) presents a list of endangered heritage sites in the program’s 15 county region. The announcement occurs in correlation to the annual Knox Heritage Fragile & Fading list of similar places in peril within Knox County. Both annual lists have become local traditions, with a goal to strengthen advocacy efforts to save these historic places before they are lost forever. Every May during National Preservation Month, ETPA releases this list to remind property owners, community leaders, and the public about how quickly important places can fade away due to neglect and the lack of a realistic plan for their preservation. Saving these historic places will conserve resources, maintain beautiful architecture, sustain the local economy, create jobs, grow heritage tourism, stabilize neighborhoods, and keep the community connected with its shared history. ETPA serves 15 counties in East Tennessee: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, Hamblen, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union. It serves as the regional arm for Knox Heritage, a non-profit preservation organization started in 1974. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve structures and places with historic or cultural significance in our region. Raising awareness of both the importance of historic preservation and specifically threatened sites is why the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance produces this list annually. It is also why the organization has developed “PLACES, the Preservation Toolbox for East Tennessee.” The Toolbox exists to assist with the process of developing viable solutions for saving our endangered heritage and is available online at www. knoxheritage.org/etpa/toolbox.
2019 Endangered Places American Temperance University Memorial Building – Harriman, Roane County Completed in 1891, the building was referred to as “the finest private office building in the state,” with its brick and stone exterior, four Norman towers, and interior oak finishings with a grand central stair. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It has served as a city hall, museum, and various offices and has become an important architectural symbol for Harriman. The aging structure has experienced flooding due to a pipe break, structural settling, and masonry deterioration. The City has taken a shotgun approach to repairs over the years but would like to 52

do much more and has a preservation plan in place. ETPA encourages the creation of a local non-profit organization that can take the lead on raising funds and developing a plan for repurposing the structure. Tennessee Railroad Depot - Oneida, Scott County The Tennessee Railroad Depot in Oneida is a reminder of the time when Oneida was booming with timber and coal being transported from the region. The Historic Oneida Revitalization group and Scott County Historical Society have determined that there is strong public sentiment to restore and find a new public use for the structure. ETPA encourages the Town of Oneida to work with local organizations on developing a viable plan to restore and repurpose the last train depot in the county. Hogskin Creek Bridge, Grainger County Also known as the Black Fox Road Bridge, this single-span metal truss bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since 2009. Originally built in 1917 as the State Highway 33 bridge across the Clinch River, it was relocated to this site in 1935 when Norris Lake was created. The old bridge is slowly decaying with rusting steel and deteriorating wood decking. Similar bridges have become popular social and outdoor destinations, and local leaders should explore options on repairing and utilizing the bridge to add to the area’s recreation options. Bowman House, Loudon County Located on Tellico Lake, the Federal style home features a limestone base quarried from Morganton, brick made on site, and beautiful curved-brick corbeling under the eaves. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ETPA encourages a preservation-minded buyer purchase the property and follow the Secretary of Interior Standards for restoration and renovation. The site is large enough for new construction, so the Bowman House could be used as a guest house or incorporated into a larger residential compound. New Salem Baptist Church – Sevierville, Sevier County The church was built in 1886 and is Sevierville’s oldest surviving building, Sevier County’s oldest brick church building, and the only historic African American church in
the county. The original bell tower and pulpit furniture have been removed, and the overall interior has been altered significantly. The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, and a Tennessee Historical marker was placed on the grounds in 2006. The New Salem Renovation Task Force has been spearheading the preservation and fundraising efforts. Their signature Smoky Mountain Gospel Explosion Concert will be held on September 29 at 3 pm at Cokesbury Church in Knoxville. ETPA invites the community to support the Task Force’s ongoing fundraising for this project. Former Tennessee Military Institute - Sweetwater, Monroe County Sweetwater Military College was established in 1874 and was later named Tennessee Military Institute in 1902. The 144-acre campus includes 10 buildings, with the main and most iconic building dating back to 1909. The campus and the educational activities that have occurred there have always been a major part of the Sweetwater community. In 2007, the school was permanently closed. There are roof and other stabilization issues that need to be addressed, as well as the development of a long-term vision for its redevelopment. ETPA is hopeful a solution can be found very soon for moving forward with renovation and restoration. Stonecipher-Kelly House - Morgan County (near Wartburg) In 1814, Ezra B. Stonecipher constructed an unusually large, two-story log home with an additional third-level loft on a portion of the land-grant adjacent to an area known today as Frozen Head State Park. The saddlebag style is unusual for the region, and the house retains most of its original, character-defining, architectural features. In February 2013, the house and property were presented to the State Land Acquisition Commission for review as a potential addition to the Frozen Head State Park and was accepted. Since then, volunteers have rebuilt the dry stack stone retention wall between the house and the old road, Frozen Head State Park staff has been working to build a gravel parking lot just east of Kelly Creek, and the interior of the house has been photo-inventoried. The Frozen Head State Park Business and Management Plan has set renovation as a priority. Friends of Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is working to restore the house and grounds as one of its six objectives. WANT to share with you one of our family’s biggest GOD stories. Whenever
we wonder momentarily if we are walking out God’s plan in this business, we simply remind ourselves how it all started. It was the beginning of September 2008. My husband, John, was managing a local restaurant, working nights, weekends, and holidays. Meanwhile, I was home raising three children, feeling like a single mom to our teenager, our 6-year-old daughter, and our 4-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum. To be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed and prayed John could have a different career. I ran across some cleaning videos online by a company out west that seemed a bit too incredible to be genuine. I watched every single video I could find. I was truly fascinated by the equipment, so when John got home, I showed him. He was equally impressed and called the company. They offered to fly us out to see the equipment firsthand that weekend. John rarely had two consecutive days off at the restaurant, so we thought there was NO way he could get time off with just a few days’ notice. Miraculously, they gave him FIVE days off with no questions asked. We flew to Arizona, fell in love with the equipment, and really WANTED to bring it back to Knoxville. But with the recession that year, our meager savings, and living on one income, we just didn’t see how that could be possible. Feeling defeated, on the airplane trip back home, we prayed, “Lord, we’d love to do this, but we don’t see how it’s possible. If this is in Your plan, we need a BIG SIGN. Amen.” The next morning, as John was going through the mail, he unbound a license plate we’d been waiting on for several weeks. We’d purchased a van, and the plates were quite late. As he looked at the plate in disbelief, he turned them toward me and said, “Honey, here’s our sign.” Printed on the plate was the date we visited the company (September 8), as well as the name of the company (TMT, which stands for The Master’s Touch). John called the restaurant immediately and gave his fourweek notice. It may not be a glamorous calling, but we know that cleaning to the best of our ability, with the tools that God provided for us, is part of His great plan for our family. Knox Heritage Summer Suppers Are a Local Tradition!

H E K N O X H E R I T A G E Summer Suppers have
become a highly anticipated and popular series of events in this region. Each Supper is unique and takes place annually during the summer months at some of the region’s most spectacular historic and culturally significant places. This year’s Summer Suppers include “An Evening at Cottonwood,” which takes guests to the former Lay mansion on Washington Pike and birthplace of the Hale Peach. In addition, Knox Heritage has partnered with Trust Fall for the first time to take guests to a secret historic location that is sure to impress. Other Suppers include an Italian feast with family recipes at a private home in Forest Hills, a unique progressive cocktail hour on a golf course with dinner to follow, an Erick Baker concert at Windy Hill Farm & Preserve in Loudon County, a special evening paying homage to Cal Johnson in Burlington, and an elegant dinner at a surprise location with Chef Matt Gallaher. In August, the Suppers venture out to Jefferson County for an evening of Victorian dining at Glenmore Mansion. History is celebrated at Suppers in Fort Sanders and at Ossoli Circle, the former highlighting immigration in Knoxville and the latter showcasing the local suffragette movement. The “Meet the Makers” Supper takes guests on a tour of the “Warehouse District” just east of the Old City, shining a light on this under-the-radar creative community via a Joyride tour. Organization Hacks for an Easy Cooking Experience

or a novice in the kitchen, it’s good to have organization hacks on hand for an easy cooking experience. With planning and space management, you can make cooking at home quicker, easier, and more enjoyable. Create a weekly menu Plan your menu in advance so you can get the ingredients needed on your weekly shopping trip. With everything on hand, you won’t be scrambling to run to the store or skip cooking altogether. Keep extras of your favorite menu ingredients in your pantry so you can make an impromptu meal when necessary. Keep a running grocery list Hang it on the fridge or the pantry door, and add to it when you are running low on an ingredient. Buy in bulk when you can to stock up on supplies and save on items you use frequently. If time is an issue, order your groceries online and schedule a pick-up. Make everything easy to see and access Store pots and pans on glide-out shelving near your cooking station, organize your utensils with divided drawer inserts, and keep spices organized and visible with pull out racks or trays. Glide-out shelving in your pantry will keep all items in view so you can quickly grab what you need when cooking. Use counter space wisely Preserve counter space with an over-the-sink cutting board. Vegetable peels and other foods you’re slicing and dicing can be moved into the sink with ease and you’ll avoid the mess on your counter. This will also free up your counter for other cooking tasks. Label everything For easy access to spices, grains, and other ingredients, label them so you can quickly scan your cabinets or pantry and grab what you need. You can color code or buy different types of labels for various items to take the guesswork out of it. Store fresh ingredients properly Plan to buy fresh ingredients more frequently so they don’t spoil. Determine which items need to be refrigerated and which should be room temperature. Store fresh veggies and fruits in bins near your cooking station. Use an herb keeper to keep your favorite herbs fresh and flavorful. Determine what needs to be done in your kitchen so you can be more organized. Make a plan and stick to it. When everything is accessible, you’ll find cooking more enjoyable.

H O R N S B Y , the creatively insatiable pianist and singer-songwriter from Williamsburg, Virginia, always has succeeded on his exceptional gifts, his training, and his work ethic. He became a global name in music by reimagining American roots forms as songs that moved with the atmospheric grace of jazz. “The Way It Is” defined sonic joy on the radio; however, as a hit record, it also evidenced a thrilling re-structuring, and during the years afterward Hornsby, in staggeringly diverse ways, has kept going. He has returned to traditional American roots forms, collaborating with Ricky Skaggs. He has played with the Grateful Dead. He has fused the plunk and dazzle of 20th-century modernist classical composition to singersongwriter emotional inquiries. He has scored films. He has performed with symphony orchestras. If the sound of an arrogant airconditioner or a stretch of rude playing caught his ear, he has entered the hallowed doors of the conservatories of punk. So when Hornsby describes Absolute Zero, his new album, as “a compendium of what I like and moves me,” don’t expect perhaps a thing or two new. Prepare for a multifaceted ride. 58

Hornsby produced Absolute Zero, his pastiche of “sounds” as he calls the album, with assists from Tony Berg, Vernon, and Brad Cook: Some songs, like “Never in This House,” expose traditional Hornsby songwriting semi-nakedly; others, like “Voyager One,” “sort of chamber art-pop meets Prince,” Hornsby says and “The Blinding Light of Dreams” with a groove that Hornsby points out dates back to “Serpentine Fire” by Earth, Wind & Fire re-stage U.S. R&B as fluidly as the music elsewhere refers to an American modernist composer like Elliott Carter. “Meds,” for example, a particular tour de force of Hornsby/Moose featuring special guitar by Blake Mills, blossoms into gripping ’60s soul choruses. “Cast Off ” manages to animate a rare style miserablist polyrhythms without skimping on the funk itself. “White Noise” Hornsby considers “the Wallace moment.” It offers a passionate singer with a string quartet backing him. “The narrative comes from Wallace’s The Pale King,” Hornsby says, “a novel about boredom, about IRS tax examiners as unlikely yet convincing American heroes.” And then “Take You There (Misty),” written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, concludes the
sequence with romanticism as re-ordered by Hornsby via memories of Steve Reich’s and Philip Glass’s sonically floral minimalism. There is precedent for musical artists moving from the mainstream of popular music to somewhere else: Ohio-born Scott Walker, ruling the airwaves with The Walker Brothers in early-’60s Britain, then concocting uniquely dark toned symphonic solo albums followed by uncharted lands of vocal compositions even much bleaker. David Byrne, determined that the late-’70s downtown Manhattan freedom of Talking Heads expand to include pop styles all over the known universe. Robbie Williams, absolutely dead-set on not letting his ’90s boyband years preclude pop and rock and swing styles done with uncommon erudition. This stripe of music evolution over time clearly has another member to add to its small and restless club. It’s Bruce Hornsby, a great restructuralist from the beginning and onward. Absolute Zero constitutes absolute 2019 proof. And all of you need to hear it is a set of open ears. Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers will be performing at the Bijou Theatre on June 25 at 8 pm. Dogwood Arts Regional Art Exhibition in the Main Gallery The Dogwood Arts Regional Art Exhibition was developed to showcase and award the finest artists of our region. Fine art encompassing all styles and genres from more than 40 emerging and established artists who live within 500 miles of Knoxville will comprise this year’s exhibition. Jurors Brian and Carolyn Jobe, Co-Founders + Co-Directors of Locate Arts, are both artists and administrators with art world experience in Tennessee, Texas, and New York. They enjoy facilitating beneficial connections and have a passion to see the contemporary art communities of Tennessee thrive. They will award $2,000 to artists at the opening at 6 pm.

Sandi Burdick: A First Exhibition on the North Wall Sandi Burdick creates abstract paintings with acrylics on canvas, boards, or whatever surfaces are available. She often mixes unusual materials into the paint. She loves the adaptability of acrylics, as they can be manipulated to look like watercolor or oils and can be overpainted or scraped away; there are infinite possibilities with acrylics. Burdick enjoys hiking and gardening and finds endless inspiration from Mother Nature. She has been fortunate to travel the world for business and pleasure and has had the opportunity to visit many of the finest art museums. She has been awed and inspired by the works she has seen. She is motivated to paint by things she sees and experiences every day. Her desire is to share the beauty that she sees and feels through her paintings.

Kirstie Durham: Test Kit in the Display Case Kirstie Durham is a Knoxville-based textile and fabric artist. Inspired by patterns, color, and texture, her work focuses on the marriage of fine art and craft by creating contemporary quilted tapestries and appliques using traditional techniques. Using mostly secondhand fabric and even some irregular quilted squares passed down by Durham’s grandmother, her series Test Kit is an illustration of intergenerational creativity and the rooted Appalachian tradition of resourcefulness. Ty Crisp: Becoming Ancestor in the Atrium In this exhibition, Ty Crisp presents Protestant iconography of the American rural church. The works are centered on a church organ from Ty Crisp the late 20th century turned inside out. The exhibition space will be transformed into the sanctuary of a fading paradigm, as Crisp will use remnants used in rural churches such as a pulpit, organ, hymn books, and more. This work was inspired after spending 2017 installing the woodwork in The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Knoxville. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Y E A R I delight in the opportunity to meet with hundreds of small business owners. Frequently, while collaborating with our clients to develop their individual marketing strategies, the topic of competition inevitably arises. Their competitive responses vary widely, from complete indifference to rage. I actually had one small business owner state that he would cause physical harm to his principal competitor if given the opportunity. While I didn’t take him seriously, it was apparent from his comments that his competition had really gotten under his skin. Competition is inevitable. In fact, it can be downright helpful if you keep an open mind. I recently listened to the CEO of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange being asked during an interview about the competitive pressures his company was experiencing from competitive exchanges. He was most gracious in his response. While acknowledging the competitive pressures that the CME faces, he reminded the interviewer that, if it were not for competition, his exchange would still be trading in butter and eggs as it had earlier in its 100-plus year history.

What does the competition manifest in you? Ignore them, or express rage, at your own peril. Study them, successfully differentiate yourself, and your competition might be the best thing that ever happened to your small business. How do you respond to your competitors? Ignoring them is unwise. It’s important to evaluate them closely to try to discern any changes they may be implementing that might be signaling a marketplace change. You also need to monitor them for potential opportunities that might be successfully exploited. I’m sorry, but rage is just stupid. I’ve observed numerous small business owners, and a few
big ones, too, who are virtually obsessed with their competition. They often spend more time contemplating their competitor’s next move than they do implementing their own marketing strategy. Rage has the potential to paralyze a small business owner, taking them out of their game as they remain preoccupied with their competition. The owner of a small retail electronics store was asked by his landlord if he thought it might be advisable for him to relocate since Best Buy was going to be moving into the same retail plaza. The owner, instead, used this worst case scenario to his full advantage. He decided to focus on differentiating his electronics store from Best Buy by promoting his associates’ superior product knowledge. Best Buy brought in the customers, many of whom visited his store as well. His strategy paid off, and he was rewarded with double digit growth year after year. What does the competition manifest in you? Ignore them, or express rage, at your own peril. Month. Following these seven men’s skincare tips can help you make sure you (or your man) maintain a complexion that is healthy, clean, and smooth! 1. Prevention is key When it comes to keeping skin in good shape, prevention is key. Make using a broad spectrum sunscreen part of your daily routine. Consistently applying SPF can prevent the appearance of premature aging. Preventing future damage is a key way to preserve your skin’s youthful glow and elasticity. If you’re prone to rosacea or have sensitive skin, make sure you’re using a physical sunscreen or sunblock rather than a chemical sunscreen. Shave smart Most men know that shaving in the direction of facial hair growth will help prevent razor bumps, the painful condition that many men with curly or wiry facial hair cope with. Take it a step further and use an exfoliating wash before shaving to prep your skin for a smooth, easy shave. Contrary to popular belief, a single edge is all you need for a smooth shave, especially if you’re prone to bumps. Razors with multiple blades shave a little too close for comfort and cut the hair at a level that lies beneath the surface of the skin, which will increase the possibility that curly hair will curl downwards and back into the skin before it has the chance to break the surface of the skin. 3. Moisture is your friend It can be overwhelming to choose from so many skincare options, especially when most are targeted toward women, but a simple moisturizer can make a huge difference in your everyday look. While you’re at it, consider reducing sodium in your diet – salty snacks might be yummy but can contribute to puffiness. 5. Trim smarter If you’re sporting facial hair, there’s more to grooming than whacking away with a trimmer. Consider using a finetooth comb to straighten beard and mustache hairs before trimming. Hair conditioner can also help keep your beard manageable, while a small amount of hair gel can help you land a manicured look you’ll love. 6. Don’t fret your frown line A recent report in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology indicated that the number of men receiving Botox injections
