like me, you probably are excited at the prospect of spring, especially after this challenging wet winter season. Temperatures are now on the rise, and although there might be a cold snap on occasion, I know it is short lived as spring pushes through. Photo by D. Roberts Photography During the colder days that keep us indoors, a type of “cabin fever” sets in, which makes it undesirable to venture out. But warmer days invite us to get outdoors and enjoy the area such as hiking in the mountains, cleaning up the winter debris in the yard, shopping the area’s boutiques, attending area events such as musicals, theatre presentations, and workshops and lectures, and enhancing our interior and exterior living spaces. In this edition, we have highlighted many area businesses that cater to enhancing your home’s indoor

Navigating the Replacement Window Marketplace

I

N 2020, an estimated 36 million

replacement windows will be sold in the U.S. according to Principia Consulting, the Pennsylvania-based building materials and construction industry’s preeminent research and consulting firm. It’s no wonder that homeowners often feel overwhelmed when it’s time to select replacement windows for their home. While the life expectancy of your home’s windows is difficult to predict, their longevity typically depends on a variety of factors, including their age, brand, and proper maintenance. When it’s time to replace some or all of your home’s windows, you may discover that your decision will be complicated by competing claims from dozens of window manufacturers and rival installation companies. You will likely find yourself asking: Which window is the most energy efficient? Which window will deliver the greatest longevity? Which window offers the best warranty? Equally important are the answers to other questions you need to ask yourself, such as: How long has your window contractor been in business? What has their customers’ experiences been like? Do they employ the best industry practices when installing your new windows? Wendy Hughes and Chris Moon, sister and brother and owners of Knoxville-based Window Works, have earned a reputation for honesty, integrity, and quality craftsmanship that they learned from early childhood from their parents, Tom and Kay Moon. Tom and Kay launched and operated several home improvement companies over three decades. Their focus was to offer the highest quality home improvement products available combined with a customer service level that exceeded the expectations of their clients. Today’s replacement window marketplace offers homeowners a large array of new, cutting-edge technologies and enhanced window designs, as well as exciting new options and features. But one thing that has not changed is the reputation that Window Works has earned for integrity and honesty that is the hallmark of their success that was instilled in Wendy and Chris as children by Tom and Kay. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to share with you this interview with Wendy and Chris, which was designed to assist area homeowners who may be contemplating replacing their home’s windows. EK: I’m not sure if my home’s windows 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2020

require replacement. How can I be sure? Wendy: There are a variety of factors to consider, including the age of your windows, the feeling of cold or hot air or drafts coming from your windows, and whether your windows are operating properly. Our team of product specialists put their talents to work daily, assisting homeowners in evaluating their home’s windows. They are invaluable in helping homeowners in their decision as to whether replacing their windows is a wise choice and, if so, presenting them with a range of options to consider. EK: What replacement window is the right choice for my home? Chris: Choosing the best replacement window for your home can be a daunting task. Homeowners might only make this decision once or twice in their lifetime, and the rapid technological advancements in the replacement window marketplace can create even more confusion. Perhaps the best place to begin is by selecting a replacement window contractor you know you can trust. A great replacement window is no substitute for a poorly performing contractor. If you’re uncomfortable or feel that you’re being pressured, trust your instincts. You’re going to have to live with your decision for many years to come. EK: How is Window Works unique in the replacement window marketplace? Wendy: Our customers routinely express just how comfortable they are in working with us. I think that because it is our nature to interact with them on such a personal level, they experience a level of confidence and trust that is increasingly more difficult to find today.

Chris: From an early age, we learned that your reputation was the very foundation of your business and that it’s something you have to earn every single day. We keep it simple. We listen carefully to our customers, and we offer honest assessments of their home’s windows. We are a second generation, family owned business that takes great pride in working with other families like our own. Placing our clients at the forefront of our daily activities, along with all that we have learned from our parents, have been the key to our success and why I think we see so many returning and referred customers. EK: Tell our readers about the new, revolutionary, 7500 Series of replacement windows from industry innovator OKNA Windows. Wendy: First of all, we invest considerable effort in investigating any potential new product we might offer in the future. The manufacturer must have earned a reputation for product and management excellence, as well as exhibit the financial strength needed to develop innovative new technologies while honoring their existing product warranties. Chris: OKNA Windows, manufactured right here in the U.S.A., is a perfect example. Quite frankly, we believe that their replacement windows are among the finest available anywhere. OKNA has built an industry reputation by combining state-of-the-art equipment, advanced technologies, and dedicated craftsmanship. And the OKNA name has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and performance. They offer a wide selection of amazing window product lines, as well as a well-earned reputation for innovation, quality, and performance, and energy-efficiency. Photos by D. Roberts Photography

OKNA Windows pioneered ClimaGuard. ClimaGuard is comprised of 11 optical tuned layers, which provide optimal climate control, neutral aesthetics, and plenty of natural light. ClimaGuards’ low-solar-gain coatings can provide better solar heat gain reduction than tinted glass, with a minimal loss of visible light. That means less harmful UV rays entering your home that can damage carpet, rugs, hardwood floors, artwork, and furnishings. OKNA Windows also feature high-performance, warm edge technology and insulating frames that help to create warmer interior glass surfaces and reduce frost and condensation. In addition to offering a full line of quality vinyl windows, OKNA also offers the amazing 7500 Series composite windows manufactured from 100% pure virgin vinyl. These windows are available in a variety of interior colors, including wood grained, to seamlessly match your home’s interior décor. There is also a rich palette of exterior and custom colors available to complement your home’s exterior architecture. But what is most amazing is OKNA’s 50-year, non-prorated warranty on your new composite windows. These ENERGY STAR rated windows also help homeowners who are interested in reducing energy costs to enjoy the savings associated with replacement windows from OKNA. Also, windows from OKNA outperform competitors on energy efficiency and excel in areas such as air infiltration and structural integrity. In fact, one of OKNA’s newest replacement windows was recognized by ENERGY STAR as “Most Efficient” in 2019. “Most Efficient” is a new distinction

that recognizes products that deliver cutting-edge energy efficiency, along with the latest in technological innovation. It is an award that truly represents the very best of ENERGY STAR rated products. EK: Describe your “Best Practices” installation promise. Wendy: One thing about all replacement windows and doors is that they perform no better than the manner in which they were installed. That means that a highly rated replacement window installed improperly will likely perform no better than a poorly rated window. At Window Works, each of our installation teams is led by a team leader with at least two decades of experience. Our team members have been trained in the proper installation of all the products we sell and adhere to the procedures outlined by each manufacturer whose products we represent, all backed up by our “Peace of Mind Product Warranty” – your assurance of a lifetime of quality and performance. Window Works is also a TVA Escore approved contractor. This is an added benefit for all of our customers, as it offers them the opportunity to have an independent third party inspect our installation to ensure that it was installed and sealed properly. It’s a wonderful, value added opportunity that any of our clients can take full advantage of. EK: In addition to replacement windows, what other products does Window Works offer homeowners? Wendy: We also offer siding, patio doors, and gutters from the nation’s top manufacturers, which means that you will have a wide variety of colors and styles to select from.

EK: How has your commitment to provide a customer service experience that exceeds the expectations of your clients impacted Window Works? Chris: At Window Works, there are no big or small projects. We provide the same high level of customer care to each and every client. We treat you the way we would want to be treated and treat your home as if it was our own. We listen carefully to you. Are your improvements designed to create a maintenance-free advantage, energy efficiency and savings, or to update the overall appearance of your home? Those are just a few things we consider when we work alongside our clients before we recommend the best products to complete their projects. We don’t sell products or services to our clients that they don’t need or even want. That doesn’t help either one of us in the long run. It destroys trust. By educating and working with our clients, we eliminate the potential for this to occur. At the end of every project, our goal is to have exceeded your expectations and to have earned your trust. This becomes the foundation of future client referrals and our success – a success where everybody is the winner. EK: Describe your “Peace of Mind Product Warranty.” Wendy: A great warranty is important to every homeowner that is planning on remaining in their current home for many years to come. Having a warranty in writing provides the homeowner with the peace of mind they deserve. A perfect example is OKNA’s lifetime transferable warranty on their composite windows for the original homeowner. Also, OKNA’s vinyl windows have a lifetime warranty that is fully transferable to a second homeowner, which is a real plus should you sell your home in the future. EK: What is the best way for our readers to learn more OKNA Windows and Window Works? Chris: There are a couple of ways. You can call us at 865-560-3044, or, if you prefer, you can come by our showroom and discovery center located at 10909 Murdock Drive in Knoxville. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Wendy: On behalf of the entire Window Works family, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our clients for allowing us to come into their homes to experience the Window Works difference. We look forward to helping every homeowner who may be considering replacing their home’s windows, siding, gutters, and patio doors. We invite you to discover the Window Works difference for yourself.

Purge Your Closet of the Past, Forge a College Student’s Future

K

NOXVILLE-BASED organization professionals Chris McKenry, President of Closets by McKenry, and Carrie McConkey, owner of Carrie M. Image & Fashion Consulting, both believe success begins in the closet. That’s why they’re helping their clients and other Knoxvillians pass along gently used career clothing to deserving students at their mutual alma mater, Carson-Newman University (C-N). In March 2017, C-N’s Student Success Center staff realized that students were struggling to obtain professional clothing suitable for career fairs, job interviews, and class presentations. The idea for a combined career wardrobe closet and food pantry was born, and less than two years later, THE STORE was launched thanks to an outpouring of support from the school and community. Today THE STORE Career Closet, located in a renovated classroom on C-N’s campus, houses men’s and women’s business professional and business casual clothing, shoes, and accessories in a retail store-like setting. THE STORE Food Pantry is located in an adjacent classroom fitted with custom shelves overflowing with food staples. All items are available free of charge to students in need of professional style or

nutritional sustenance. After visiting THE STORE Career Closet, McConkey excitedly contacted McKenry. “I knew through our similar services we could partner to help support the effort,” said McConkey, who is often hired to help sort through closets bursting with clothing. “When working with clients to design their new closet – even if they will have their dream closet, larger than before – ‘editing’ is what is almost always mentioned,” said McKenry. “By purging what is no longer wanted, in style, or used makes room to see what is really loved and often overlooked in our wardrobe.” The two quickly identified a convenient clothing donation location: McKenry’s new Closets by McKenry showroom, located

at 201 Center Park Drive, Suite 1070 in Knoxville. Professional apparel can be dropped off anytime during business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. “As a business graduate of CarsonNewman University, I am excited to share in this program,” said McKenry. “Many students can take advantage of business attire in great condition as they start out on interviews and join the work force.” “Yesterday can get in the way of today,” said McKenry on the value of passing on clothing that no longer fits our lives (or figures). And through THE STORE Career Closet, a student can receive a brighter tomorrow.

He also has recorded 14 CDs under his own name featuring his unique compositions, blending his love of traditional jazz with a more modern-seeking style. Spring Cleaning Won’t Restore Your Home’s Hardwood Floors

S

PRINGTIME IS THAT TIME of the year for many of us when we engage once again in that annual ritual of spring cleaning. Windows, cabinets, draperies, floors, and carpeting are all thoroughly washed, waxed, and cleaned. Our homes are once again as spotless as the day we moved in. But there’s one area of your home that all the cleaning and elbow grease in the world can’t restore, and that’s your home’s hardwood floors. Cleaning cannot remove scratches, dents, gouges, fading, and the UV damage that our hardwood floors experience. European Fine Hardwood Floors has been helping Knoxville area homeowners rediscover the natural beauty of their home’s hardwood floors using the same skills learned from highly skilled European craftsmen combined with today’s state-of-the-art technology. Did you know that your home’s hardwood flooring can be restored to its original, likenew condition without the inconvenience and mess typically associated with conventional hardwood floor refinishing? A specialty dessert and tea or coffee complete the meal. As guests finish up their meals, they might notice some familiar faces on stage as their waiters and waitresses join in on the excitement on stage. From the start, the feud is action packed with “battles” of musical talents, clogging and dancing, and dozens of imaginative diving stunts. Guests will be amazed as the stage features dancing one minute and then morphs into a pool equipped with boats and diving boards. During the show, even the audience becomes

part of the feud by taking part in competitions set at the Sevier County Fair. All children in attendance get in on the act during a portion of the show, creating memories that will last long after this crazy feud is over for the night. “The cast pours their heart into every performance,” said Jamie Parish, General Manager of Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud. “We invite audiences to become a part of our ‘feudin’ family’ and create memories that will have them laughing long after the show is over.” Reservations and showtimes are available by calling 865-908-7469 or visiting www. hatfieldmccoydinnerfeud.com. N THE CORNER of 5th Avenue

and Central Street, the elegant old Knoxville High School building is a well-known landmark to those who love the city of Knoxville - and a cherished memory for those who studied within its walls. The school officially closed its doors to students in 1951, but it remained a part of city life through various uses until 2015. That’s when local firm Dover Signature Properties saw incredible potential in the bones of the place. Owners Laurie and Rick Dover and their team planned a thorough restoration effort that would bring back life to the old classrooms by turning them into luxury senior apartments. The layout and design of the former school building were a natural fit for creating living spaces, and its appealing architectural details gave the new space a personality and character you simply can’t find in new construction. As a building in the Classical Revival style that appears on the National Register of Historic Places, Knoxville High was restored with faithful attention to historic detail while also meeting stringent LEED environmental standards. The result is a building that’s beautiful to look at - and comfortable to live in. Knoxville High Apartment Living, which was named the number one renovation project for senior living in the country by Senior Housing News in 2019, is designed to be an all-inclusive lifestyle choice - your monthly fee includes most of the expenses of everyday living and covers services like housekeeping, transportation, and the most amazing chef-prepared meals you’ve ever tasted. We have 80 newly renovated apartments that are luxurious and full of architectural character, all for a price that’s more affordable than other independent living choices in Knoxville. Knoxville High is, first and foremost, a community. Our residents eat meals together, join each other for museum trips and concerts, and form strong friendships that make life more enjoyable. We keep a full and active social calendar and welcome all our residents to join in the fun one night we might have a sing-along in the piano lounge, another a wine tasting in the courtyard. You’ll never lack for things to do. Enjoy the city experience. Located where Old North Knoxville meets the historic Old City, Knoxville High gives you instant access to all the cultural activities that Knoxville is well known for: Museums, restaurants, festivals, concerts, and so much more. And we often bring in local artists and organizations - like the Knoxville Opera and the East Tennessee Historical Society - for outstanding cultural programs right here on the premises. Knoxville offers so many options for entertainment that it’s impossible to list them all. Bowl with your friends in a historic boutique bowling alley. Be Retirement Ready: 3 Things You Need to Know B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

A

RE YOU STARTING to anticipate retirement with its less pressure-packed days and no alarm clock? You may have a dollar amount, age, or career milestone in mind that’s associated with your retirement date. But... before you leave your profession, money, and lifestyle, don’t let these three critical need-to-know items catch you by surprise. 1. If the stock market corrects in the first few years of your retirement, it will have a lasting negative effect on how much income you can withdraw over your lifetime and how long your money will last. It’s called a “negative sequence of returns,” and people who retired in 2007, ahead of the bear market 2008, can attest to its power. 2. For an age 65 couple, there is a 50% chance that one of you will live to age 91 and a 30% chance that one of you will live to age 95. Your money needs to last a long time in retirement. 3. Healthcare will cost more than you might anticipate. A Fidelity study estimated that retirees spend 15% of their income on healthcare costs, excluding long-term care costs. Healthcare is the number one thing that my retired clients acknowledge they underestimated. We are hosting two complimentary workshops where we will share important ways to prepare yourself ahead of time so you can enter retirement feeling in control of your money and life. At our workshops, we will answer important questions like: » How can I structure my portfolio now to limit the impact of a market downturn in my early retirement years? » What kind of preparation can I do now that will make sure I have enough cash flow to live the lifestyle I want? » What kind of simple long-term care options should I consider so I don’t have to worry if my spouse or I have any health problems? » What kind of preparation can I do now that will make sure I have enough cash flow to live the lifestyle I want? » What “draw down” strategy would work best for minimizing my taxes? Together, with the team at Marsh Wealth, we can help you create a comfortable and secure retirement! 3 SURPRISING INGREDIENTS TO BOOST FLAVOR IN YOUR RECIPES

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

L

OOKING FOR EASY WAYS to add zing to snacks

and meals? Adding just a few flavor-packed ingredients can revamp recipes with very little effort. Consider adding dried fruits to your daily meals and snacks, as they’re not only full of flavor, but packed with nutrition, too. Because dried fruit needs no refrigeration, it’s also a great on-the-go snack for packing in school lunches, gym bags, or keeping in your office desk. Did you know that a serving of dried fruit counts as one serving of fruit toward your daily nutrition goals? That’s just one more reason to sneak dried fruit into lots of recipes for a pop of flavor that gives every dish more depth and appeal. These dried fruits also contain no added sugar - they just provide natural sweetness to your recipes. Here are three dried fruits to try for maximum taste and nutrition. 1. Apricots Plump, sweet, and delicious, one serving of dried apricots is only 100 calories. Apricots are a good source of vitamin A and potassium, and they can be eaten as a snack or added to a variety of recipes. Mediterranean and Indian dishes are great uses for dried apricots. Try chopping them up to add zing to rice pilaf or to balance the spice and heat in an Indian meal. Baked goods like muffins or oatmeal cookies are enhanced by adding chopped dried apricots. 2. Prunes Prunes are a great addition to many baked goods like cakes, cookies, and bars. Compared to other dried fruits, prunes are lower in naturally occurring sugar and have a low glycemic index of 29. Prunes are an all-natural source of fiber, with three grams of fiber per serving. Studies suggest that five to six prunes per day can help to support bone health. Their richness adds a lot of texture and flavor to any dish. They complement pork dishes well, and they can add sweetness to your holiday stuffing recipe. 3. Dates Perfect for sweet and savory dishes, one serving of dates is a good source of dietary fiber. Dates have a rich sweetness that makes them a valuable asset to desserts like bars and cookies. Dates pair well with nuts, pork, and squash. This recipe from Sunsweet Growers Inc. using dates can be served with a family meal or for entertaining. 18

Acorn Squash Date Bowls Prep time: 4 minutes Ingredients: » 2 small acorn squash » 1 tablespoon coconut oil » Salt and pepper to taste » 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained » 1 sprig fresh rosemary » 1 cup water » 1/2 cup dry quinoa » 3 tablespoons pumpkin seeds » 6 Sunsweet pitted dates (or more to taste) Instructions: Preheat oven to 425°F. Cut acorn squash in half and scoop out seeds. Brush coconut oil over inside of squash halves. Roast in oven on baking sheet, cut side down, 30 minutes. Turn cut side up and season with salt and pepper; roast 20 minutes more. Place garbanzo beans in rimmed baking dish and toss with 2 teaspoons coconut oil and a pinch of salt. Roast 15 minutes, then stir lightly and add rosemary; roast 5 to 10 minutes more. Place water and quinoa in small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook, covered, 15 minutes. Remove from heat with lid still on and let stand 10 minutes, then fluff with fork. Chop Sunsweet Pitted Dates and roasted rosemary. Stir together dates, rosemary, quinoa, garbanzo beans and pumpkin seeds. Scoop into acorn squash and serve warm. Makes 4 servings. Picked fresh off the trees at the peak of ripeness, these fruits are then dried to preserve the nutrients so you can enjoy seasonal fruit all year long, versus only when they are in season. Teams can be any groups of people who want to add this designation (for free!) to their registration. Encourage others you know to join you in the race… coworkers, classmates, family, military, friends, etc. are all great ideas for teams. If you register as a team with coworkers, your team can also win the “Fittest Company” competition, determined by which company’s employees complete the most combined miles on race day. Invisalign: Clearly Your Best Solution for a Great Smile

I

T’S ONLY NATURAL to com-

pare your smile to the smiles of others who exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth. Perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve your very own whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many. Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces. Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. And while there are other clear aligners on the market, you are encouraged to examine these alternatives very closely. According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been more than 1,800 consumer complaints across the country filed against one such Invisalign competitor promising significant savings with their DIY, in-home alignment system. These same complaints allege that patients have had to spend from

$800 to $5,500 to correct the misalignment resulting from the use of these DIY aligners. Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners. Also, what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist

or orthodontist who will recommend a treatment without ever having examined you personally. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist? To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

AVID BREWSTER, co-owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, has been a frequent guest on my radio show, “Around the House,” on Newstalk 98.7. My live home improvement show can be heard on Saturdays from 7 to 9 am. David helped me and my listeners understand how Aqua Clear Water Systems could eliminate the lime deposits on my home’s faucets, in addition to my dry skin condition, which resulted from using untreated water. My laundry detergent also goes twice as far, and the treated water rinses my clothing so much better. And, best of all, my drinking water tastes great. My ice is clearer, and it’s taste and odor free. Aqua Clear Water Systems even helped clear up my dog’s dry skin. The in-home consultation and water testing was thoroughly and professionally done. Everything was done as I looked on, and I was shocked to see how many solids were in my water! I could not believe my eyes! We then discussed a variety of options to select from. The installation team was exceptional! They left no mess at all. The Aqua Clear Water Systems installers, Brian and Jesse, were truly professional and courteous! Everything was explained to me, and they answered all of my questions. They even took pictures of the installation so if I have any questions in the future, they can refer to the photos on file in real time, saving time and money. I am an Aqua Clear Water Systems believer. My hair is softer and has more shine. My skin is so moist, and my cost of soap has been cut in half and all from a filtration system that doesn’t even require electricity. Amazing! I would rate my Aqua Clear Water Systems experience as HHHHH exceptional! Aqua Clear Water Systems really does change your water... it has changed my life! I never knew what I was missing. It’s an unbelievable value.

New Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History

K

NOXVILLE OCCUPIES a

unique place in the American South. Following the Civil War, residents felt it was one of the few racially tolerant cities in the region. Unlike most cities in the South, African Americans in Knoxville could vote, hold public office, serve as police officers, and sit on juries. Despite this, racial tensions still held the city captive, and life for black citizens was not the same as that for white citizens. Despite Jim Crow laws and segregation that dictated much of the interaction between black and white citizens, African American artists carved out a place for themselves in Knoxville. A new feature exhibition, Black & White: Knoxville in the Jim Crow Era at the Museum of East Tennessee History, explores what life was like for African Americans in Knoxville during the Jim Crow era. This exhibition, presented as a timeline, provides historical context to the lives of local African American artists Beauford Delaney, Joseph Delaney, and Ruth Cobb Brice. It seeks to answer what influence the city had on the early lives of these artists and whether they could succeed without leaving home. Brothers Beauford and Joseph Delaney were internationally known artists whose works are now part of some of the world’s most prestigious collections. The Delaneys were born in Knoxville in the aftermath of slavery and the Civil War. Their education was often informal and sporadic, as they attended one rural school after another while traveling with their circuit-riding preacher father. They grew up amidst racial segregation, witnessed the upheaval of Knoxville’s race riot in 1919, and were aware of the lynching of blacks throughout the South. They were part of the Great Migration, during which thousands of African Americans left the South looking for opportunities. Beauford and Joseph took different paths, yet their paintings reflect the world they 26

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2020

experienced, beginning with life in Knoxville. Ruth Cobb Brice was a Knoxville-born educator, writer, and artist contemporary with Beauford and Joseph Delaney. Like the Delaneys, Brice grew up amidst racial segregation. But unlike them, Brice worked from Knoxville. Even without the direct influence of large art centers, Brice’s paintings and poems gained national notoriety. About Black & White: Knoxville in the Jim Crow Era The Museum of East Tennessee History will feature Black & White: Knoxville in the Jim Crow Era on view now through June 14. The exhibition highlights three African American artists from Knoxville - Beauford Delaney, Joseph Delaney, and Ruth Cobb Brice - and how Knoxville during the Jim Crow era shaped their lives and careers. The exhibition includes 66 artifacts highlighting the history of race relations, African American art, and the development of an art community in Knoxville following the Civil War. Forty-five of these artifacts are on loan to the Museum of East Tennessee History from the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, Beck Cultural Exchange Center, and private donors. The exhibition features several videos including Knoxville’s Red Summer: The Riot of 1919 and Beauford Delaney, both courtesy of East Tennessee PBS and Black Appalachia, and The Civil Rights Movement in Knoxville courtesy of the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound. A variety of artworks by the highlighted artists are on display, as well as works from other Knoxville-based artists who influenced them. There is an assortment of artifacts reflecting the racial mentality of Knoxvillians following the Civil War. One case contains a variety of “Mammy” dolls, a stereotypical portrayal of African American women, and another case highlights African American

stereotypes as presented through local photographers the Knaffl Brothers. Other artifacts include items from the Appalachian Exposition of 1910 and a seat from the Gem Theatre, which opened in 1913 and was the South’s largest black theater. The East Tennessee Historical Society developed the exhibition with guest curator Robert J. Booker and research assistance provided by the staff of the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, Knox County Public Library. We encourage patrons to view the exhibition in tandem with the Knoxville Museum of Art exhibition Through the Unusual Door (through May 7), which provides a groundbreaking look at Beauford Delaney and his creative exchange with writer James Baldwin. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is FREE to all, and ETHS members always receive FREE admission. The museum is located in the East Tennessee History Center, 601 South Gay Street in Knoxville. For more information about the exhibition, scheduling a school tour, or visiting the museum, call 865-2158824, email eths@eastTNhistory.org, or visit www.easttnhistory.org. The Human/Pet Bond

H

ERE’S A NUMBER for you, a big

number: 84.6 million. That’s approximately how many American homes have a pet of some kind. For the elderly in particular, the human/pet bond goes especially deep. As socially-active and sociallyminded beings, humans in general need interpersonal contact; and if that contact is diminished for whatever reason – loss of a partner or friend, transition to retirement – a pet can be a wonderful substitute for that companion or contact. According to researchers, pets can help satisfy the longing for both company and the need for affection. Even further, researchers say that because these loving animals enrich our lives in so many ways, what a human can receive from a pet goes beyond simple companionship. Pets can actually lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and may even reduce direct pain. And for the senior adult, pets are wonderful companions to help offset the challenges of loneliness and depression. Just ask Parkview Senior Community resident Carole Prevett. Yes, of course she fulfills her pet Molly’s basic needs and provides affection, but what she receives in return is limitless. “When my husband died in 2006, I was all by myself and was lonely inside the house,” she said. “I needed something to move around in the home and be company to me, so I got this little white poodle named Molly. She keeps me company, and I just love her to death. I am so glad I have her. Having her makes me get out and do exercises, which we all have to do, but sometimes we don’t. She makes me get up and do my walking, so that’s a plus. The two most positive things in my life right now are Molly and Parkview, and I am so grateful for both.” Looking for a place to call home that will accommodate both you and your pet? Parkview Senior Living communities have so much to offer someone looking for an active, independent lifestyle, and yes, your pets are welcome. PHIL KEAGGY B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

I

N THE HISTORY of Contemporary

Christian Music, one of the patriarchs of the genre is a man who played with some of its early trailblazers. That man is the worldrenowned guitarist, Phil Keaggy. Keaggy has been active in Christian music since his conversion in 1970, blowing people’s minds with his amazing guitar wizardry that has earned him much respect from within CCM and many accolades from outside the genre as well. In a recent extensive interview, Keaggy shared openly about his career in and out of the CCM industry, the challenges he and his wife had with suffering the pain of multiple miscarriages, his prolific production of work, both solo as well as collaboratively, and who he’s been able to meet and play with. About his solo work and how it’s “getting out there,” Keaggy shared: “I’ve been an Indie artist now for about 18 years, since the last record label I belonged to was Word Records. They let me go in 2002, and since then, everything I’ve been putting out has been just Indie. That means no marketing or distribution. Very little radio. But I keep working, because that’s my job, and I still do concerts because a number of people still like to hear me play and sing and do my songs. So the thing is, I keep creating, and I’ve been doing a lot of collaboration, especially during the last, I’ll say 10, 12 years with other writers and artists/musicians." Then, turning a little more serious, Keaggy shared some of his feelings about the CCM industry. “The industry has changed,” he said. “We don’t have CD stores like we used to. We don’t have record stores except for specialty shops, you could say, where you can find LPs. So when I do concerts, I make my music available to people at the concerts.” 30

Sir Paul McCartney and Phil Keaggy

In addition to his amazing catalog of work that is still growing, Keaggy has played with various names outside of CCM. He humbly talked about them when asked. “I’ll be 69 in March, and I’ve had great opportunities during my lifetime to play with people I really admire. Say, for instance, Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta. Those two guys - to be on the same album with guys that played with Peter Gabriel and McCartney and Lennon and all these all these amazing musicians and all these amazing artists. “I did get a chance to play at Linda McCartney sister’s wedding back in 1990. As a result of that, I had a chance to just sit down and play guitars with Paul McCartney for about 20 minutes. After which McCartney said, ‘You have a nice voice. Remind me a bit of James Taylor.’ I mean, he was a great influence on me from a melodic standpoint, a tonal standpoint, vocally. One of the great, great writers and artists of all time, of course, and it was an honor to meet him. It was kind of surreal, actually. “So anyway, that’s one of the stories I wouldn’t have ever presumed or assumed or imagined in my wildest dreams - that I’d be in

the studio with someone like McCartney or Clapton or any of those kinds of players that were influential. But I have played for Rick Derringer on one of his tracks and on Airborne Ranger with Mark Farner, the guitarist from Grand Funk. I have played on a few projects by other people. Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters is a great guy. Great guitar player, fun guy.” Later in our conversation on some other subjects, Keaggy added, “I enjoyed meeting Mickey Dolenz. I played on six of his 12 songs on his album called Remember. I’ve been to his house out in California. We had a listening party with a lot of friends and artists that you would recognize that were there. One of my favorite solos I’ve ever done on anyone’s album was on his album - on the Nilsson song called Remember, the title song. Yeah, Mickey - he’s fun. A talented guy. For his age, the guy’s singing is still great.” With our chat wrapping up, the guitar meister said this of his life: “We all have a chance to leave a mark - leave something behind worth remembering. Those are the things that matter to me. You know, the fruit of the spirit stuff: Love and joy and peace. I want to be a peacemaker.” This interview was quite extensive and can be read in its entirety at www.boomerocity. com. You can also order Keaggy’s amazing work at www.PhilKeaggy.com, as well as see a wide range of his performances on YouTube. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Custom Closets Keep the Family Organized and Happy

M

OST FAMILIES have both

organized and messy individuals, and they don’t always live in sweet harmony. Constantly tripping over someone’s shoes in the middle of the floor gets old and frustrating. Organization is not a natural inclination for everyone, but it is essential for a less stressful life. And when you live with others, it’s also a courtesy to maintain your own stuff and space. Tailored Living of Knoxville can help get life under control for all your family members with custom closet systems to meet the specific needs of each person. Kids’ Closets That Grow with Them It’s never too early to start introducing the habit of organization into your child’s world. Starting with a closet they can manage on their own or with a little help, this encourages them to be organized and responsible. There is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” kid’s closet, but a basic design includes: Preschool and Grade School » Low-level bins and shelves for toys and shoes they can put away themselves » Tiered hanging rods multiply the hanging space and are adjustable as they grow » Drawers or slide-out baskets to put away socks, pajamas, and underwear

Middle School and Teen » Tiered hanging rods for long and short items, scaled to the child’s height » Adjustable shelves for clothes, shoes, books, and favorite collections » Decorative hooks create easy storage for jackets and backpacks » A pull-out laundry hamper corrals dirty clothes and keeps the floor clear » Drawers can organize folded clothes or be customized with dividers to hold small items Shared Master Closets That Keep the Peace A shared closet can be a perpetually frustrating experience, but it doesn’t have to be. With a carefully designed space, a shared closet can provide individual, organized

storage for two, accommodating both wardrobes and accessories. Each person will have space for what they need so they aren’t competing for territory by including: » His and hers hanging sections and drawers, including a jewelry drawer for her » Dedicated individual shoe racks » Shelves for folded items, hats, purses, and more » Tilt-out hamper to toss dirty clothes » Specialty racks for belts and ties » Retractable valet rods are an extra hand for putting an outfit together or handling dry cleaning Whatever your needs, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet for any member of your family. As whole-home organization specialists, Tailored Living also has innovative storage solutions for the pantry, laundry, home offices, garage, and more. We help turn chaos into calm!

Ijams River Rescue Needs Volunteer Site Captains for Annual Cleanup March 28 IJ A M S

N A T U R E C E N T E R is looking for volunteer site captains for its 31st annual Ijams River Rescue scheduled for Saturday, March 28, from 10 am to 1 pm. “We need to add 30 additional site captains to be able to reach more areas,” said Lauren Bird, Ijams Education Administrative Coordinator. “Site captains are crucial because they keep each site running smoothly and help address any issues that arise.” A site captain’s duties range from checking in volunteers and going over safety procedures to handing out snacks and completing a brief cleanup report. There are one to two site captains at each location. These volunteers receive training prior to the event. Ijams River Rescue, now in its 31st year, draws between 600-800 volunteers annually and removes between 10-40 tons of trash from the river’s shorelines and its tributary creeks. “In 2019, about 700 volunteers removed 33 tons of garbage from 34 sites in Knox, Blount, Loudon, and Anderson counties,” said Bird. 38

Bird at lbird@ijams.org or 865-577-4717, ext. 135. A general call for cleanup volunteers will be issued at a later date.

“A site captain’s work isn’t terribly strenuous or hard, but they determine how many sites can be cleaned up. If you have a friend, spouse, or partner, you can volunteer as cocaptains, which will make it more fun.” For details about Ijams River Rescue or to volunteer to be a site captain, contact Lauren

Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces Even to the Max

RE YOU READY to let the great out-

of-doors in? The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless possibilities to enjoy your home’s backyard experience. In East Tennessee, homeowners are creating more and more outdoor living spaces, yet are you really enjoying your new spaces to their full potential? In many parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. And here’s why. Homeowners are increasingly adding outdoor “rooms,” such as porches and lanais with kitchens, complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from fully enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide a solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting insects that can spoil your family’s evening events. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of today’s retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. Your screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are required. For more information about how to begin enjoying your home’s outdoor living areas to their fullest potential, call 865-919-1615 or visit www. tennesseescreens.com.

UT Gardens Announces Art in the Gardens Project Collaboration with Local Artists Promotes Community Participation in Both Art and Gardening

FOR THE THIRD YEAR

in a row, the University of Tennessee Gardens, Knoxville, is proud to announce a new Art in the Gardens project for 2020. This year’s theme is “Dazzling Dogwoods: A Garden Art Exhibit,” and local artists are invited to decorate or embellish a pre-fabricated dogwood blossom silhouette for UT Gardens visitors to enjoy. Donated pieces will be auctioned in September 2020, with all proceeds benefiting the UT Gardens. “Our goals are to raise awareness and support of the UT Gardens,” said James Newburn, interim director. “This fun and whimsical project is a great combination of gardening and art.” Amateur or professional artists are invited to artistically interpret this year’s theme. Canvases, in the form of a primed plywood dogwood silhouette, will be provided to each artist. The dogwood forms are available in two sizes: 21 inches by 21 inches or 36 inches by 36 inches. When completed, works will be returned and installed in the UT Gardens. Artists and the general public are invited to an opening reception to view the Dazzling Dogwoods on June 5 as part of

Knoxville’s First Friday monthly celebration. Contributing artists are invited to share thoughts about their piece and inspiration during the opening reception as well. Those interested in participating should register online at tiny.utk.edu/dogwoods. Entry fees are $20 for a small dogwood form and $30 for a large or $45 for two dogwood forms, one in each size. Once registered, the artist will be contacted by UT Gardens staff to arrange for pickup and payment. Registration is now open and will continue until all silhouettes are sold. Forms may

be picked up after March 2, and completed works must be returned by May 4. The Best Home Underdecking System Available Anywhere – Period! BY JIM CONN, OWNER OF UNDERCOVER SYSTEMS OF TENNESSEE

W

E FREQUENTLY receive inquiries from homeowners

who have recently visited friends and relatives that have installed an underdecking system on their home’s raised deck. I think it’s the appealing aesthetics that first catches their eye. Let’s face it: The underside of a deck as viewed from the patio below is dreary at best. If you have ever investigated underdecking systems, you’ve already discovered that there are a variety of options to choose from. That’s why I would like to highlight a system that I truly believe you will find superior to any other system available. First of all, we don’t purchase generic “off-the-shelf” components. All of the materials we install at your home were manufactured and fabricated at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility specifically for your project. We use only 22 gauge galvanized steel coated with a Dura Coat polyester paint. Many of our competitors use a light gauge generic aluminum substitute. Our patented system does not attach itself to the underside of your deck. Our system is fully supported by our gutter system that is installed along the perimeter of your raised deck. This protects your deck by promoting the free circulation of air that aides in the drying of your deck’s support joists. All we install is Undercover Systems’ patented decking systems. We are not remodeling contractors installing windows today, cabinets tomorrow, and siding the day after. All of our installers are factory trained and certified. I think that what our clients appreciate most is that I, Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems of Tennessee, personally supervise each and every installation. In fact, I often help install our patented underdecking system as well. If you have ever considered installing an underdeck system under your home’s raised deck, I invite you to discover why Undercover Systems is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and why we have received the much coveted Consumers’ Choice Award and Green Business Certification. Available in a variety of color options and our premium bead board design, discover how you can better enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces all year-round by protecting your family from unexpected rain and the searing sun with Undercover Systems’ patented underdecking system.

March in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

I

D ON ’T KNOW about

you, but I think I am starting to mildew! I remind myself that we are at the edge of the Appalachian rainforest and this is normal, but I get awfully tired of the rain this time of year. I just try to be happy that it isn’t very cold. March is a tricky month. There will be at least one stretch of beautiful days that will try to convince you that spring is here. Don’t be fooled! Our average last frost is still early to mid-April. Planting too early will break your heart, because just as those baby plants get up and going, Mother Nature will freeze their little heads off. Patience, grasshopper! There are a lot of things that you can do this month, however. Let’s talk about those. » Finish up your plans for your yard. Go out and do your garden walk-around and finalize that to-do list. Check for problems and plan for improvements. Note what plants need to be moved, removed, divided,

pruned, or treated. Would you like to add features such as a bench, fountain, or birdbath? Have things changed so your plants aren’t thriving anymore? Remember to look up, down, and all around. If you need help, come in with some pictures and talk to us. » Our mild winter means that fungal spores and insects were NOT killed off, so make sure that any plant debris is removed. Getting rid of over-wintering hideouts will help decrease the severity of any disease and insect problems you are going to have. Let’s face it; we are going to have problems because of the mild climate, so it behooves you to try and stay on top of it. » Weeds were also not killed during the winter. There is currently a bumper crop of pop weed, henbit, and chickweed in my yard, and the green onions are everywhere! The ground is fairly soft from all the rain, so this is a good time to have a little dirt therapy. Take a trowel or ball weeder, a good pair of gloves (or leave them off and let those good microbes and

bacteria into your skin), and a kneeling cushion outside and take out all your frustration on the weeds! I’m not a huge fan of herbicides, but if you are going to use them, please follow instructions. Most have a temperature range on their effectiveness, so spraying at the wrong time is just a waste of money. It is also important that you not spray on a windy day unless you want to risk replacing plants that were caught in the overspray. » There are things that can be planted now, but you need to make sure that the ground isn’t soggy. Planting in mud is a sure way to kill everything, because the plants can’t breathe. Wait until things dry up, or plant containers. When the ground is workable, trees, shrubs, and cool season annuals and perennials can go in. » You can start warm season annual and vegetable seeds inside. Yes, by mid-month, you can plant your precious tomatoes and peppers! They need to stay inside, however. Cool-season greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, potatoes, and radishes can be seeded directly into the ground. Again, wait until the dirt is workable! What does that mean? If you grab a handful of it and smush it, it crumbles. It doesn’t turn into a ball. » I have had several calls about fertilizing. People want to know what to use and when to use it. The when depends on the what. If you are using an organic product, you can apply it just about any time because it isn’t strong enough to generate a growth flush. If you are using a chemical product, wait until the azaleas bloom. Here is my analogy: Organic fertilizers are like adding vitamins to your diet, but chemical fertilizers are like drinking an energy drink. The vitamins release slowly over time, adding nutrients to what is hopefully a good diet (that is the soil). A non-organic causes a burst of growth that is vulnerable to late season frosts and freezes. Whatever you use, read the directions! » I will finish by reminding you to take care of the birds and they will take care of you. Feed them a good quality bird food and they will help you keep insect problems at bay. It is also critical that you keep feeders clean and refilled, and keep baths clean and filled. You can also clean out birdhouses and get them ready for new families. We are getting shipments weekly, so stop in and check it out. We will also start our workshops this month, so watch for emails or check Facebook for updates. Let us help you have a beautiful home and yard!

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Juniper BY ALEXANDRIA SMITH, UT GARDENS, KNOXVILLE PLANT COLLECTIONS CURATOR AND HORTICULTURIST

EUPHORBIA,

often called spurge, belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a very diverse group of flowering plants with more than 2,100 species. The genus is represented all around the world and can vary dramatically in appearance, with some species having forms that look like small cacti and others that become large, long-lived trees. I n Te n n e sse e , seve ra l h e r b a c e o u s euphorbias are perennials. Historically, the milky latex often found in the stems of euphorbias has been used in traditional medicine to treat skin ulcers, warts, and intestinal parasites. However, protective gloves should be worn while handling spurge, as the latex can sometimes be an extreme irritant to the skin and eyes. Several species and cultivated varieties are listed below. These are available to gardeners and are valued for their year-round foliage color and unique flower interest. Varying climates across the state can affect durability, so be sure to check with the UT Gardens site in your region to see which specific varieties have performed well in your area. E. corollata is native to the United States and can be seen growing along our roadsides. This underutilized native is grown more for the baby’s breath-like blooms that start in late summer and continue into early fall. While not as cultivated as other species, the ‘Carolina Snow’ selection boasts showy blooms, proving why this tough native is worthy of a spot in the garden. Both E. amygdaloides and E. characias are native to Europe, and both species, as well as hybrids between the two, are largely responsible for the cultivars available today. E. x martinii ‘Ascot Rainbow’ is highly sought after and for good reason. This hybrid features variegated foliage in shades of greens and yellows, with new emerging foliage tinged with red hues. Foliage also has red and orange hues during fall and winter months. E. characias ‘Tasmanian Tiger’ is another popular cultivar, with green leaves and striking white variegation. When viewing from a distance, this cultivar almost looks completely white to silver. E. amygdaloides ‘Waleuphglo’, also sold as E. amygdaloides ‘Ruby Glow’, is a wonderful selection that has bright ruby red spring foliage that matures to a dark purple-black color and has a more compact habit than other cultivars. These ranges of color make euphorbia fun to pair with other annuals and perennials for striking color combinations. While these cultivars look wonderful during spring

and summer, their evergreen foliage is outstanding during dreary months. Flowers appear during late spring and into early summer with each stem topped by a thick, bottlebrush-like inflorescence. Bloom colors range from shades of yellows to greens and should be removed once spent to avoid reseeding. Their size typically ranges from one to three feet tall and wide, making these perfect to tuck into mixed borders, rock gardens, and containers. Spurge likes to be planted in full sun and in very well-drained soils. They will tolerate a little shade but tend to get leggy and look unkempt. Once established, they are fairly drought tolerant but appreciate moisture during the hot summer months. Along with being a fuss-free addition to the garden, they are also deer resistant. At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, we have

E. amygdaloides ‘Waleuphglo’ featured in containers around our Children’s Garden and E. x martinii ‘Ascot Rainbow’ surrounded by mixed perennials in our popular truck bed. UT Gardens, Crossville also has Waleuphglo located near the flag pole in the Americana Garden. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Create a Truly Custom Showcase Kitchen & Bath B Y TO D D T H O M A S , O W N E R O F S T I C K S 2 S TO N E S D E S I G N

G

R O W I N G U P kitchens were,

well, generic. They were a place where family meals were prepared and consumed. If you’re into nostalgia like me, the family kitchen was probably best exemplified by the popular holiday movie “A Christmas Story.” Dull, drab, and unappealing, yet functional. But dull, drab, and unappealing no longer describes today’s kitchens. Today’s kitchens are showplaces... architectural design masterpieces. They serve as gourmet kitchens, a favorite family gathering place, and an entertainment area for guests. Is it any wonder that homeowners invest so much time, thought, and energy into planning their new or remodeled kitchens today? We carefully consider each and every element that comprise our kitchens, including colors, wall tile and splashes, appliances, plumbing and electrical fixtures, flooring, and, of course, the most important element of them all – cabinetry. Without a doubt, your cabinetry is the single most important element in the creation of a beautiful, showcase quality kitchen. Today’s homes reflect our evolving lifestyles. They reflect our personal tastes and individuality. We carefully select all of the furnishings and décor items for every room in our home, avoiding the generic looking assembly line merchandise so commonly found in the big box stores. When selecting kitchen and bathroom cabinetry for our home, homeowners recognize that today’s custom furniture and kitchen and bath cabinetry marketplaces have much in common. They may represent well-established brands, but they are nonetheless still assembly line manufactured cabinets, often produced offshore. And while they offer options often unavailable from the big box stores, they too have their limitations. That’s why at Sticks 2 Stones Design, we offer homeowners an option that simply is 46

unavailable anywhere else. We offer the finest, high-quality, hand-crafted, all-wood cabinetry available. Each cabinetry piece is individually hand-crafted to your unique specifications, and each and every piece exhibits the attention to detail, care, and pride of our master craftsmen. And best of all, you can select from an almost limitless choice of styles and unique finish options. Named after the Amish country where our cabinets are hand-crafted, Amish Select Fine Handmade Cabinetry from Sticks 2 Stones Design offers today’s discriminating homeowners the quality and craftsmanship they deserve at a truly affordable price when compared to other existing custom cabinetry offerings. Our Amish Select cabinetry is the pride and joy of our custom cabinetry company and the crown jewel of so many of our

clients’ homes that we have been privileged to design custom kitchens and baths for. Our handmade cabinetry reflects the centuries-old traditions of Amish craftsmen for high ethical and moral standards and a respect for nature. Using time honored techniques, our Amish craftsmen deliver a level of quality that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s fast paced, assembly line world – and at prices lower than you might have thought possible. Like us, you will discover that Amish Select is not a style, but rather it defines a level of quality that is unsurpassed in today’s kitchen and bath marketplace. At Sticks 2 Stones Design, we have combined the quality of old-world craftsmanship, found only in genuine Amish custom-built cabinetry, with our more than 25 years of experience in cabinet design and installation to provide you with a truly custom kitchen or bath designed to exceed your expectations and to WOW your friends and neighbors. If you are planning on building a new home or remodeling your home’s existing kitchen or bath, I would like to personally invite you to discover the Sticks 2 Stones Design and Amish Select difference. Discover the “beyond custom” difference by transforming your ordinary kitchen or bath into an extraordinary, showcase quality kitchen or bath.

Rethink Your Garage Flooring G

ONE ARE THE DAYS of a

dirty, oil-stained, and cracked garage floor. Today’s garage floor coatings leave the garage looking like a true extension of your home. Garage floors have a hard life. They are subject to constant pressure from the car and hot tires as you drive over them, as well as temperature extremes and abuse from oil drips and substances brought in on your tires. As a result, the concrete often ends up cracking and crumbling. There are a few flooring options to protect your concrete; however, not all floor coatings are created equal. The decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and installed by PremierGarage. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” Polyurea flooring systems present the most-advanced, fast-curing, and hardening system in concrete flooring technology. It withstands more abuse and impact than any

traditional epoxy coating. It also provides better protection against harmful agents like oils, chemicals, and gas, and it doesn’t stain, crack, or peel. PremierGarage’s polyurea floor coating will look new for years to come. While do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with, the down side is many things can go wrong when applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tires bond to the surface and peel it away

from the concrete. For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating instead of epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling, or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

Big Ears Festival in Downtown Knoxville March 26-29

K NOXVILLE’S INTERNATIONALLY

acclaimed Big Ears Festival is only a few weeks away, opening Thursday, March 26, and running through Sunday, March 29. Both the Bijou Theatre and Tennessee Theatre are proud to be some of the featured venues and look forward to hosting many of the festival’s most compelling performances. Lineup at the Bijou Theatre Led Zeppelin bassist and keyboard player John Paul Jones will offer two extremely rare performances during Big Ears. Always a musical adventurer, Jones’ post-Zeppelin work encompasses rock, opera, folk, bluegrass, and a number of forays into the avant-garde. On Friday, March 27, he’ll introduce audiences to his duo, Sons of Chipotle, with Finnish cellist Annsi Kartunnen. On March 28, he’ll perform a rare solo concert employing piano, mandolin, and electronics - an extended improvisatory reverie from one of the most iconic musicians of his generation. On Saturday, March 28, the enigmatic Annette Peacock will make a very rare live appearance at Big Ears. In the 1960s, Peacock made her mark with a songbook of mysterious jazz tunes; in the 1970s, David Bowie signed her to his new label. In the intervening decades, Peacock has continued making groundbreaking excursions into punk, new wave, and chamber music. The New York Times called her “the most remarkable - and mercurial - living singer and composer you’ve almost certainly never heard.” A pair of celebrated and groundbreaking young female composers will present new work at the Bijou. North Carolina-born singer, composer, and violinist Caroline Shaw - 2013 Pulitzer Prize and 2019 Grammy Award winner - will present a new collaboration with Sō Percussion on Saturday, March 28. Nathalie Joachim, a singer, composer, and flutist, offers her collaboration with the Spektral Quartet on Friday, March 27. They’ll showcase music from the Grammy-nominated album Femn d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti), a homage to Joachim’s Haitian heritage. Other Weekend Highlights at the Bijou Theatre » Efterklang & Múm: Two of the turn of the century’s most enigmatic alternative rock bands, Denmark’s Efterklang and Iceland’s Múm make return appearances in the USA for the first time in many years. Efterklang performs on Friday evening, and Múm performs on Saturday evening. » Electric Appalachia: The musical duo of harpist Mary Lattimore and guitarist William Tyler will present their collaboration with Knoxville’s film archivists TAMIS (Tennessee Archive of Moving Image & Sound) on Sunday 50

afternoon. » Jeff Parker, Myra Melford, Peter Brötzmann, and Andrew Cyrille: Jazz sets from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker & New Breed and 2013 Guggenheim fellow pianistcomposer Myra Melford’s Snowy Egret. Plus, German free jazz titan Peter Brötzmann goes head to head in a duet with powerhouse heavyweight drummer Andrew Cyrille. Shows run through the festival weekend. » Bang on a Can All-Stars: Classical new music ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars will re-imagine their initial recording, Renegade Heaven, updated with work by Ornette Coleman and Julius Eastman, along with BoaC founders Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe on Saturday afternoon. » Daniel Piori & Valgeir Sigrudsson: The young British classical violin wizard Daniel Pioro, a muse for Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, will present his collaboration with Iceland’s producer, composer, and pianist Valgeir Sigurdsson on Thursday evening. » Winged Victory for the Sullen: The musical duo of Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Witzlie return to Big Ears with a program of ambient soundscapes inspired by Swedish abstract artist Hilma af Klint’s spiritualist group “The Five” on Sunday evening. » Arooj Aftab & the Vulture Prince Ensemble: Sufi-inspired Pakistani singer and composer Arooj Aftab introduces her all-star band, Vulture Prince Ensemble, at Big Ears on Thursday evening. » The Necks: The miraculous Australian jazz trio, The Necks, who have been described as a “magic act disguised as a band,” or sometimes simply “the greatest band in the world,” return to Big Ears for two shows - the second at the Bijou on Sunday afternoon. Lineup at the Tennessee Theatre This year legendary rock icon, poet, and National Book Award winner Patti Smith will perform two unique concerts during the festival. On Thursday, March 26, Smith will present an intimate acoustic evening called “Words and Music” that blends readings of her poetry and prose with a special selection of songs. On Friday, March 27, Patti Smith & Her Band will perform in all of their glory. Visionary ensemble Kronos Quartet will also present two programs at the Tennessee during Big Ears. On Saturday, March 28, they take the stage with their dynamic livedocumentary, A Thousand Thoughts, a

collaboration with filmmaker Sam Green, which received a Special Selection award at Sundance. On Sunday, March 29, Kronos will join forces with the singular composer Terry Riley, with whom they shared a Grammy Award this year, to chart a musical partnership that spans over four decades. Other Weekend Highlights at the Tennessee Theatre » Meredith Monk with the Bang on a Can All-Stars: Memory Game. The fearlessly innovative and visionary singer and composer presents a collaboration with the legendary new music ensemble. A world premiere is on Sunday evening. » Anthony Braxton’s Thunder Music Ensemble: Avant-garde legend, NEA Jazz Master, and MacArthur Fellow Braxton ends a 75th birthday celebration weekend at Big Ears premiering new music performed by a 10-piece ensemble. A world premiere on Sunday afternoon. » Jason Moran & The Harlem Hellfighters: Dazzling jazz pianist, MacArthur Fellow, and curator of Jazz at the Kennedy Center pays tribute to the neglected ragtime pianist James Reese Europe, who is credited with bringing American jazz to Europe as a soldier during World War I. Moran brings a 10-piece band to Big Ears for this acclaimed multimedia project on Thursday evening. » Tindersticks: The legendary British alternative rock champions of beauty, longing, and melancholy present their first American concert in more than a decade, on the heels of a new record, No Treasure But Hope, on Saturday evening. » Joe Henry’s 115th Dream: A “dream band” assembled by the exceptional singer/songwriter/producer Joe Henry, especially for Big Ears, and featuring guitarist Mark Ribot and pianist Jason Moran on Friday evening. » Sound for Andy Warhol’s KISS: Rock goddess Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), with guitarists Bill Nace and Steve Gunn, along with drummer John Truscinski, create live accompaniment to Warhol’s infamous film. A commission of the Warhol Museum on Friday evening. » The Haden Triplets: Daughters of the legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden explore the roots and branches of American music and their family traditions, with music from their new album, The Family Songbook, on Friday afternoon. While both weekend passes and single day passes remain available to Big Ears, quantities are limited, and the festival is on track to sell out, for the first time, in advance of the weekend. A Wife’s Chronicles of a Passionate Nerd

W

BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM

HEN I WAS in the market

for a paddleboard, I noticed them wherever I went. When we were expecting our first child, we shared knowing glances with fellow parents to be. When we are passionate about something, that “something” naturally jumps out at us. For my husband John, one of his passions is floors. You may laugh, and sometimes I do too, but since we entered the deep-cleaning and restoration business 12 years ago, he notices floors. Every. Single. One. Imagine conversation starters like: “Wow, this company chose a great tile! This floor will really last!” Or “It looks as though an acid wash has destroyed the integrity of this beautiful stone.” More than once he’s approached a business owner to share some knowledge and free expertise, and a friendship is born. Sometimes I chuckle when he gets so excited about his day’s work. He often takes before/after photos of his day’s work, and when he gets home, he often whips them out, describing each one in detail. I know that it’s his passion that makes him so good at cleaning and a big reason why our clients appreciate him so much. If you are wondering if John is as

It’s not only John’s passion that sets Surface Doc apart from other cleaning companies. The equipment his crew uses is mind-blowing all by itself. A self-contained disc uses purified water and 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction to literally blast dirt out of the pores of your floor and whisk it away. John’s knowledge and enthusiasm, partnered with the strength and precision of Surface Doc’s equipment, makes the difference, and that’s what sets Surface Doc apart from everyone else. Knoxville to Host “Stand Beside Her” Tour Stop TENNESSEE

SOFTBALL will host the 2020 USA Softball Women’s National Team in an exhibition game on April 8 at 7 pm at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium as a part of Team USA’s “Stand Beside Her” Tour. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. Fans will have an opportunity to see the Lady Vols take on Team USA as the Red, White, and Blue’s Olympic squad prepares for Tokyo 2020. Spectators will also have a chance to welcome back legendary Lady Vol Monica Abbott (2004-07), who holds the NCAA record in career strikeouts (2,440), innings pitched (1,448.0), victories (189), and starts (206). Abbott, who owns nearly every UT pitching record and is a four-time All-American and the 2007 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, will also make her second appearance at the Olympics this summer. “Ralph and I are extremely excited for the opportunity to host Team USA at Sherri 54

Parker Lee stadium on the ‘Stand Beside Her’ tour,” said Karen Weekly, co-head coach. “It is even more special because our very own Monica Abbott is coming home to Rocky Top and representing our country in the 2020 Olympic Games. We couldn’t be prouder of her and everything she has accomplished in her career. We are grateful to the Visit Knoxville Sports Commission and the University of Tennessee for working together to make this possible.” Visit Knoxville, the official Convention and Visitors Bureau for Knoxville and Knox County that liaised the opportunity, believes the Team USA visit will positively impact the local community. “We are excited to bring Team USA to Knoxville,” said Chad Culver, Senior Director of the Visit Knoxville Sports Commission. “The opportunity to see these athletes compete in an Olympic year against the Lady Vols will be great for our community. We appreciate

our partners in Tennessee Athletics for working with us to host this exhibition game.” Abbott expressed equal enthusiasm about her impending return to Big Orange Country. “I’m so excited to be back on Rocky Top with Team USA,” she said. “The University of Tennessee is rich with Team USA ties and has many connections to the USA Softball program. I can’t wait to be back representing Vol Nation and the USA!” The “Stand Beside Her” tour evokes a powerful message of unity aimed to inspire communities to stand beside HER – the members of the WNT, America and the future generation of female athletes. Adopting a New Four-Legged Kid

S

PRING IS A GREAT TIME to

adopt a dog. It’s a great time to potty train a puppy and acclimate older dogs to your environment. Before adopting, research the various breeds. You’ll discover that Border Collies are active, Shelties are vocal, and German Shepherds are independent. Think about your lifestyle and the best matched kid for your family. Ask yourself: » Does the dog happily approach you? A fearful dog may not socialize well and will require a lot of behavior modification. » Does the dog play well? Playful dogs are easier to develop bonds with and train. » Is he easily aroused? Most pups use their teeth to explore the world, but adolescent and adult dogs should have learned that putting teeth on humans is not acceptable. » Does the dog take treats fairly gently? If he jumps up to get it, whisk it out of his sight for a

second, then try again. » Can you look at his teeth, then carefully hug him? If he resists restraint and becomes aroused, pulling away from you, he probably won’t be a warm, cuddly dog. This is important if you have children. » Does he tolerate other dogs? If there is more than one dog in the family, introduce your adoption prospect to the other dogs. Upon adoption of the new member of your family, give Ms. C’s a call to set up doggy daycare. We enjoy assisting families in making the best dogs even better through the socialization that takes place at daycare.

S DIRECTOR of Education

& Research for Knox Heritage, I get to do a number of interesting t a s k s t h at m a ke eve r y d ay something fun and different. One of my favorite things to do is research, particularly historic architecture and the people who designed, built, worked, and lived in these buildings. I get a lot of inquiries from many individuals who are interested in learning about the history of buildings. The nice thing is that someone doesn’t have to have a history degree to do this; it can be done by anyone at a local library. Knoxville is very fortunate to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (not to be confused with the Frank H. McClung Museum, a wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee). The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library and housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street. The McClung is home to a large collection of regional history and historic documents, and it is a top notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to web-based genealogical databases 56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2020

- and that’s just the beginning. The McClung makes it easy for anyone to visit. It is open every day, but the times will differ depending on the day of the week. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung. If you are starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, plan a visit and take one of the free introductions to internet genealogy classes. Find out who lived in your house in 1925, or check out where your grandmother lived in the 1940 U.S. Census. Make a day of it, and while you’re downtown, have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General Store, or see a show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. So many changes have been taking place in downtown Knoxville, and your research on local history at the McClung will most likely make you want to explore more of this historic area. For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comforts of your own home with its online digital collection. Spend hours hunting down historic images from Knoxville and East Tennessee. You can even purchase photos in a number of different ways. My favorite collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection taken by Knoxville’s

own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. This collection has an estimated 75,000 negatives, providing a visual legacy of Knoxville and East Tennessee from 1907 until 1960. Preservation printing of these negatives has been the major focus of the McClung Historical Collection for two decades. Jim Thompson and his younger brother, Robin Thompson (1895-1977), were business partners from 1920 to 1926 as Thompson Brothers. Both men were pioneer commercial photographers. By the late 1920s, Jim’s photographs (Jim Thompson Co.) and those of his brother (Robin Thompson, Inc.) were appearing in local and national commercial publications. Next time it’s raining and you’re looking for something to do, visit http://cmdc. knoxlib.org and start exploring. The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is located on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street. Open every day, admission is free to the public. For more information, call 865-215-8801, email mcclung@knoxlib. org, or visit www.knoxlib.org. Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

MARTY STUART BY RANDY PAT TERSON,BOOMEROCIT Y.COM

Marty Stuart and Carl Perkins

L-R - Marty Stuart, Dave Edmunds, Carl Perkins, and Ricky Nelson

I

F YOU’RE A LONGTIME,

baby boomer country music fan or are a younger music aficionado who knows great country music when you hear it, then you are, undoubtedly, more than aware of country legend Marty Stuart - whether it’s through his earliest work as a child musical prodigy with Lester Flatt’s The L-R - Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Nashville Grass (appearing with the Marty Stuart, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison band on Hee Haw at 14 years old) or as his work with Vassar Clements, Doc Watson, and Johnny Cash before launching his solo career. That career encompasses 18 solo albums, two live albums, a soundtrack album, a ton of compilation albums, and 33 singles. This earned him prominent screen time in Country Music, last year’s acclaimed PBS documentary by Ken Burns. He’s been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for 28 years and is a member and past president of the Country Music Foundation. The icing on the cake of his life is his lovely wife of 23 years, country star Connie Smith. Stuart recently added “author” to his list of achievements, with his book entitled The Pilgrim: A Wall-to-Wall Odyssey. It’s a phenomenal book inspired by his 1999 album, The Pilgrim, that is chock full of photos reflecting his career and his own amazing photographic work taken while on the road. To chat about the book, I contacted Stuart while he was on his tour bus, headed for a show at Chattanooga’s Walker Theatre. I asked Stuart to share what the book itself is all about. “Well, The Pilgrim, as far as who I am, I don’t know,” he said. “If you’re a mandolin player, I’m a mandolin player. I’m a guitar player. But I think what I have become without trying is just - I’ve lived long enough that I think I’m one of the touchstone figures of the culture of country music. I think I’m one of the go-to people for the world of authentic country music. I’ll buy that. I can back that up. And The Pilgrim was a record that happened in 1999, 20 years ago. That was a return after a long commercial voyage - an incredible run - back to the heart and soul, to the bedrock, the timeless place, to a timeless place in country music. Authenticity. As with every evolving artist reaching for his roots and his true self, the authentic self buried within, I suppose. There was a lot of heartbreak and disappointment when the record didn’t work. But, you know, the lesson in it for all of us is sometimes you have to wait around for things. So my friend Tom Allen said in this book, I think he said sometimes paintings don’t sell the first go around. Monet, whoever. So this is a painting that didn’t quite sell the first go around, but it comes back 20 years later. It teaches us all that authenticity and the real stuff that comes from the 58

heart usually finds its mark however long it takes.” I started my questioning with a comment as to how the book seems to reflect the depths of his heart and where he currently is in his life and asked if my perception was correct. “Absolutely, because it was, at the time, a bold move,” he said. “Part of the circumstances forced me to do it. But you know, when you keep getting away with something that keeps working, whether it’s right or wrong, you tend to go with it because it’s easy. And that kind of played out. And at the end of the ‘90s, I was kind of forced to either keep going and become a parody of myself or turn around and go back into my heart and remind myself who and what I really believed in and who I think I was set on earth to be. So that sounds like me, me, me, me, me, but that’s where I had to go at that moment. And so I think what Scott Romar said in the introduction in this book is absolutely true. There was kind of life before The Pilgrim in life after The Pilgrim.” Wrapping up our chat, I asked the country music legend how he wanted to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “Well, I think the truest thing I could say to you is that he finally found something that he believed in with all of his heart and then he followed his heart at any cost to get the job done without compromise,” said Stuart. “And I hope I could be true to that.” That he has, is, and will, no doubt, continue to be. There is much more to this interview that you can read at www. boomerocity.com. You can also order Stuart’s book, The Pilgrim: A Wall-to-Wall Odyssey, after reading the extensive interview. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on March 6 TH E

ARTS & CULTURE

Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from March 6-27. A free reception will take place on Friday, March 6, from 5 to 9 pm as part of First Friday activities downtown to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Victoria Phillips: A Place Within Artist statement: A Place Within was created from a state of contemplation and exploration. It is an extension of the processes and ideas of my previous works. In these paintings, I examine how each layer interacts with the next. There is a sense of sublime expression as I investigate the human condition. The frailties and hardships of humanity are reflected in the disruptive processes, as I reference the sublime spiritual aspects through the washes of pigments and the synergy found within the hues. Many of the paintings from this collection were created in Skopelos, Greece, while I was a resident artist at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts. The mountainous landscapes paired with the endless ocean views created an atmosphere of divine inspiration. The beauty and simplicity of the island are reflected in the mystical landscapes in this collection as the disruptive qualities allude to the universal human condition. Through exploring the transcendental qualities found in my processes and metaphorical connections, I aim to delineate a sense of hope while providing an environment that is conducive for a visceral experience. Phillips graduated with a B.A. in Visual Arts and in 2013 from Lee University in Cleveland, TN. She earned her M.F.A. in Painting at Savannah College of Art and Design in 2019. She completed an artist in residency in Greece in 2019, giving her the opportunity to exhibit internationally. She resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and is a parttime Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University and a full-time Visual Arts Educator. Gary Monroe and Denise StewartSanabria: Tableau Vivant Gary Monroe, who resides in Knoxville, has been exhibiting extensively throughout the U.S. since the early 1980s. Predominately a representational artist, he often includes non-representational elements in the work.

The subject matter tends to be subjects from his native state of Tennessee, such as Appalachian serpent handlers, moon-shiners, and, of course, Elvis Presley. Hi work is held in numerous private and museum collections. He was most currently exhibited in Appalachia Now! An Interdisciplinary Survey of Contemporary Art in Southern Appalachia at the newly renovated Asheville Art Museum. In this joint exhibit, he will provide work from three series: The Serpent Handler Group, The Velvis Group, and Comedy County Cocke. Denise Stewart-Sanabria was born in Massachusetts and received her BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. She has lived in Knoxville since 1986. Sanabria paints hyper-realist “portraits” of everything, from produce to subversive jelly donuts. She is also known for her life-sized charcoal portrait drawings on plywood, which are cut out, mounted on wood bases, and staged in conceptual installations. She is a recipient of the 2019 Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Grant for her work on wood. Her work is included in various museums, private, and corporate collections. Smoky Mountain Maritime Modelers The artistic craft of ship modeling has been part of the building process to finish full size ships for hundreds of years. The Master Modelers of the Smoky Mountain Maritime Modelers will display a collection of museum quality wood ship models built from scratch and kits. All models start with blueprints and supplied wood that require hours of shaping, sanding, painting, and rigging, often taking months or even years to complete. The Master Modeler presenters at this show include Butch Alline, Dave Amstutzd, Bill Gass, Vic Kaminsky, Dennis Kimbrough, Larry Moore, Carl Whitten, and others, and their models vary from historic square riggers to modern ships. Jess Maples: Nurture Aperture With two showcases in Nashville and one in New York City, Jess Maples, born and raised in Knoxville, is bringing her one-of-a-kind exhibit to Knoxville for a homecoming event. The past three years, Maples collected various responses to the question “How do YOU let the light in?” and sought after the perfect photographs to match the answers. The title of each photograph is a direct answer that came

from her survey question. Nurture Aperture is Maples’ movement designed to teach the world self love. “I started this project to offer a few moments of reflection for guests,” she said. “This is more about an experience rather showing what I can do with a camera. With mental illness at an all-time high, it is easy for us to focus on the darkness in life. My desire is to show others the beauty of fostering the openings that let the light in – in nurturing their aperture.” Each piece is printed locally on recycled aluminum. All photos are shot with a Sony A7 and A7III. Only minor post processing in Adobe Lightroom is used. Bradley A. Wilder: Synchronicity Artist statement: There is a formulation of similar universal brain stimulus one obtains at birth that allows for specific functions in the way one perceives life and becomes a part of the global subconscious. I call this being in tune with the idea of free association - to connect images or words together within the mind that may have no apparent connection to one another, allowing an intrinsic understanding of archetypal imagery. I leave each viewer with their own innate familiarity with the signs conveyed in my images. The creation process and content is achieved organically, with equal accounts of order and randomness, exploring different mixed media methods of painting, including materials such as oil, acrylic, spray paint, and charcoal often used simultaneously or subjectively depending on the nature involving an individual piece. My work taps into the subconscious thoughts that are within each individual regarding their own outlook towards reality. Wilder received a B.F.A in painting from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2015 and is working on an M.F.A in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. He has studied painting and drawing in France and China. Wilder has been in multiple group exhibitions throughout the country along with a solo exhibition in 2015 in Lexington. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. The Benefits of Sleepaway Camps for Children and Teens A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

A

S A PARENT, you worry about

your child’s future. Will they be confident enough to weather life’s ups and downs? Will they find happiness and success? How will they navigate their future challenges? According to research by the American Camp Association (ACA), a traditional sleepaway camp - where a child or teen spends one to four weeks away from home - helps them experience growth and development beyond a specialized day “camp” or class. Rather than spending a week learning computer coding or at a hyperfocused sports camp, a sleepaway camp develops qualities that last a lifetime. Enhanced self-development It may seem hard to let your child spend so much time away, but camp can be a huge boost to their confidence, independence, and resilience. It also builds social-emotional skills to benefit them through adulthood. » Confidence comes from doing. A child who must do things on their own, without a parent nearby, learns they can accomplish much more than they thought. » Becoming self-reliant and developing a feeling of competence comes from attempting - and sometimes failing - until they succeed. » Learning to persevere through discomfort helps a child feel like they can handle anything, creating resilience. A camp experience that builds independence, self-reliance, and confidence is a huge gift - and parents can give that gift to their children by finding a camp that boosts a child’s sense of self. For example, Cheley Colorado Camps, a traditional sleepaway camp celebrating its 100th year, is designed to give children a chance to slow down, learn about themselves, connect with nature, and explore new things in a relaxed, supportive environment. “Parents and campers tell us the camp 62

experience was life-changing,” said Brooke Cheley-Klebe, camp director and fourthgeneration Cheley family camp leadership. “It is not only a mechanism for growth, but an experience that shapes their life in a positive way for years to come.” Expanding horizons Being away from home means your child leaves their comfort zone. Sharing space with kids they’ve never met, from different backgrounds, states, or countries, is also a completely new experience. Exploring challenging activities expands your child’s world, which can be fun, exhilarating, and self-affirming. If your child or teen has never ridden a horse or gone rafting, these activities may stretch their abilities beyond what they thought they could achieve. Cheley campers partake in dozens of outdoor activities, crafts, and more. Trying a variety of new things changes a child’s idea of what they’re capable of - much more than camps focusing on one subject fostering curiosity, perseverance, a love of learning, and inner confidence. Connecting with nature As young people increasingly spend time indoors, they lose opportunities to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty around them. Spending time outdoors improves young people’s ability to live in the moment. Affinity for nature was one of the top benefits of camp found in the ACA study. Sleeping under the stars and exploring the outdoors foster an appreciation for nature

that can’t be achieved any other way. Unplugging from technology Sometimes it seems like technology and social media have taken over, especially for young people. Giving up technology for weeks may seem impossible, but the results are astonishing. A decrease in anxiety and an increase in happiness are noticeable in most campers when they unplug. In the ACA research, teens and children who unplugged reported learning how to live in the moment. They stopped worrying about the past or future, instead focusing on their present experiences. Putting down technology means learning to look other people in the eye. They develop better social skills while reading each other’s non-verbal cues, like facial expressions and body language. Face-to-face interaction is the only way to develop those skills. Lifelong friendships Kids at sleepaway camp bond with other campers in a deep, lasting way. Sharing the camp experience creates a sense of community, fostering lifelong friendships. In the ACA research, children and teens said making new friends was the best part of camp. They - and their parents - said social skills learned from camp helped them develop friendships at school, long after camp ended. While you may initially feel reluctant to send your child to camp, giving your child this gift can be life-changing. To learn more, visit www.cheley.com.

Successful Entrepreneurs Have Fire in Their Eyes I

self-employed for more than half my life. Despite my more than three decades long experience as one of the nation’s 10+ million self-employeds, little has changed, at least as it relates to the opportunity for success. One thing that has changed, however, is my ability to pick a winner. While I don’t claim to possess a crystal ball, I have had the rare opportunity to observe firsthand many thousands of small businesses and their owners for 30+ years. I generally place business owners in one of two categories. The most successful are those with that unmistakable fire-in-theireyes passion for both their business and the future, whereas those who are most certain to fail are those who treat their business as a hobby or a casual venture. They are the ones who set some arbitrary date for success. “If I don’t achieve my goals by year’s end, I’m out of

Merely wanting to be successful is not enough. We all want to succeed. Your desire to succeed has to be an obsession.

here.” Picking a date to succeed is the same as picking a date to fail. Failures among the first group are rare. Failures among the second group are almost assured. Merely wanting to be successful is not enough. We all want to succeed. Your desire to succeed has to be an obsession. Now I’m not suggesting that you abandon your family and

friends in pursuit of success, but your success has to be an obsession for at least that portion of the time you have allocated to running your small business. If I were politically correct, I would substitute commitment for obsession. But no matter what word you prefer, nothing worthwhile will be achieved in any noteworthy fashion without that fire-in-your-eyes passion that each and every winner exhibits. So why am I so overly obsessed with sharing my point of view with so many self-employeds and would-be entrepreneurs? Simple, actually. My objective is to help you choose between success and failure and to avoid the emotional and financial costs that those in the last category are almost guaranteed to experience. I love having been self-employed for more than half my life. I hope you’ll be able to say the same thing yourself in the future. The choice is yours.

Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits SUCCESS

On January 12, 2009, our lives were turned upside down when Goody’s closed, where John was an IT manager. Living in a borrowed motor coach and with a contractor building our kennel, our income had just been cut in half. Worried was an understatement! Hearing of our misfortune, Tom from Everything Knoxville helped us to create a cost-effective, well-thought out marketing plan to help us secure potential clients for our new kennel. Everything Knoxville is not just magazines. Behind those publications is a great team of professionals, sharing their personal experiences, inspiring and promoting small businesses like ours. In 2014, Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits was recognized as a top boarding resort and grooming spa in the Knoxville area by the Knoxville News Sentinel Reader’s Choice Award. God has truly blessed us! Thank you Everything Knoxville for your role in our success.

BOTOX QUESTIONS ANSWERED

B

OTOX IS AMONG the most common procedures

performed at Dr. Doppelt’s office. Are you considering Botox? Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Botox and how this popular treatment can work for you. First, what is Botox? Botox and similar products share a common ingredient, botulinum toxin. These are toxins that block muscles from contracting. Doctors call these products neuromodulators. Sound scary? It isn’t. When used by experts like Dr. Doppelt and his staff, Botox has many cosmetic and medical applications. How does Botox work? By blocking these nerve impulses, Botox is able to keep certain muscles from tightening. This activity is what causes certain lines and wrinkles on the face, such as the lines between the eyebrows (also known as glabellar lines or “11s”). With continued use, these lines can be reduced dramatically from the face. What can Botox be used for medically? Botox has many medical indications - 14 in fact! Botox isn’t new to the treatment scene: It was first approved in the 1980s, according to information from the Cleveland Clinic. The first FDA-approved use for Botox was to treat conditions like uncontrolled blinking and lazy eye. It was soon used for cosmetic treatments, too. Botox is a diverse treatment that has been used for a variety of medical and cosmetic applications for more than 30 years. What can Botox be used for cosmetically? Even with so many medical applications, Botox might be best known for its cosmetic indications. From smoothing out lines to fixing a gummy smile, Botox has many cosmetic uses. Learn about how you can present your best self with confidence and Botox. » Crow’s feet: Wrinkles that form on the outside corners of your eyes. » Forehead lines: Creases created by lifting eyebrows and expressive movement. » Frown lines: Usually perpendicular lines between your eyebrows

caused by the repeated action of underlying muscles. Often called the elevens, because they look like the number 11. How much does Botox cost? The cost of Botox varies. This is because Botox pricing is based on how many units are used. A unit of Botox might only cost $10 or $15. However, your total cost for Botox depends on how many units are needed to treat your specific concern. For example, treating lines on the forehead between the eyes might take 20 or 30 units. Smaller areas, like crow’s feet, require fewer units of Botox and will likely cost less. When you’re considering the cost of Botox, it’s important to be aware that you get what you pay for. It may be tempting to find the place with the lowest Botox cost, but extremely low prices actually aren’t a good sign. The Botox might be diluted if you are paying far below the average cost of treatments. Additionally, the person administering low-cost Botox might not have the skills and experience to give you the results you expect. This increases the risk of complication and serious damage to your skin and muscles. Will I still look natural after Botox injections? Botox looks very natural when administered by a skilled medical professional. When done correctly, you’ll look natural with fewer lines and wrinkles after treatment. How long does Botox last? For most patients, the results of Botox can last three to four months. Does Botox hurt? Botox is administered via an injection. Honestly, it might hurt a little. It is a needle after all. The feeling might be similar to a bee sting. However, your provider can reduce the discomfort of Botox injections by using a topical numbing cream. Still have questions about Botox? We have answers. Dr. Doppelt is prepared to offer the answers and solutions that only a board-certified dermatologist can provide.
