H A V E B E E N blessed to have three great women role models in my life as I was growing up. My mother, grandmother, and aunt were all instrumental in shaping my character and my outlook on life, which has resulted in the person I am today. My mom taught me how a Photo by D. Roberts Photography mother’s love is so important in a child’s development. Mom was devoted to her two daughters, and she unselfishly gave her all for them. I grew up in the ’50s when few women worked outside the home, but my mom (and dad) wanted a home in a nice suburb where their kids could grow up in a safe neighborhood. So my mom worked to help save for the down payment, but she was always there for us for all the important times in our life, and for that unselfish love, I am forever grateful. Grandma Emily, the only grandmother I knew, became a widow shortly after I was born, and her grandkids were 4

the light of her life. But grandma was not one to sit idly. She kept busy with social events, club activities, and volunteering, as well as cooking wonderful meals for us when my mom was at work. Grandma Emily taught me to dream and dream big and not to let anyone take that dream away. She taught me to focus on the positive and not to let the negative take me down. And my aunt LaVerne, who married later in life and raised three boys of her own, had a hand in raising me and my sister. My aunt was a career woman who pursued a college education and graduated tops in her class. She instilled in me the importance of an education and, in fact, her chosen career in medical technology became my chosen career. There is so much more I could say about these three women, but during this month, when we celebrate moms and those in that role, I just want to say how grateful I am to have had them in my life. I miss them all every day, but their influence will never be forgotten.

There are many reasons to consider getting a new closet system: To get better organized, to have more storage, to make a more beautiful space. The best reason to do any project in the home is to add joy to your life – to create a space that is welcoming and saves time getting dressed. Before the current Maria Kondo craze, NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals) members have helped clients deal with clutter and be better organized. being more productive at home. Barbara Hemphill introduced the “Art of Wastebasketry™” in her book Taming the Paper Tiger at Home. Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces 16th Annual Heritage Happening Gala and Auction May 18

REPARATIONS ARE WELL underway for the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center’s 16th annual Heritage Happening Dinner and Auction. The well-attended event supports the Heritage Center’s goals to preserve, communicate, and celebrate the rich history of the Smoky Mountains and their people. This year the Heritage Happening will be held at the Center’s home in Townsend on Saturday evening, May 18. It will feature both silent and live auctions, as well as an elegant dinner catered by Rothchild’s of Knoxville. Guests will enjoy live Appalachian music and welcome from local writer and storyteller, Sam Venable. The wide array of unique items to be auctioned this year includes beautiful artwork from area craftsmen, destination vacation trips, wine, Smoky Mountain activities, and food and dining experiences, thanks to the generosity of donors across East Tennessee and to the dedication of our Guild members who solicit these diverse items. check the website frequently. The Heritage Center Guild was founded by a group of 21 women in 2003 with a goal of helping to raise funds for the yet-to-bebuilt Heritage Center museum. According to the Guild’s mission, it annually hosts the Heritage Happening auction and dinner to help support the continuing development of the Center and its extensive educational programs for children. This year more than 6,000 students are expected to participate in the Center’s unique educational programs. Commenting on the Guild’s role in the Heritage Center’s story, Director Bob Patterson said, “We could not do educational programming, bring in new exhibits, maintain our grounds, and fund transportation for visiting schoolchildren, among many other needs, if it were not for this Guild. In addition to their fundraising efforts, they volunteer thousands of hours each year’s in support of school field trips, festivals, and concerts.” Invitations to the 2019 Heritage Happening were mailed in April to Heritage Center members and past attendees, but all are welcome

Pirates Voyage Taking Shape in Pigeon Forge as Construction Progresses

OLLY PARTON is making good on staking her claim in Pigeon Forge with the construction of the Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, her newest attraction in the Smokies, and the treasure – buried and otherwise – already has begun to arrive and take shape at the venue. Construction on the Pirates Voyage building, located on the Parkway adjacent to The Island in Pigeon Forge, began the first week in January. The first – and biggest – task was to “build” the lagoon, the centerpiece of the set that will house the two pirate ships where the action of the entire show takes place. The digging of that foundation required removing more than 281 loads of dirt via dump truck for more than a month (that’s 4,500 cubic yards or 7,500 tons of dirt!); that part of the project was completed in February. That 15-foot lagoon soon will hold 300,000 gallons of water. The installation and finishing of 600 cubic yards of concrete and 50,000 lbs. of steel in the 30,000 square foot arena began the week of February 25. An extensive nationwide talent search 12

began as soon as this entertainment project was announced last fall, and the cast of 20 has already begun show rehearsals and intense training for the acrobatic and diving skills required of pirates and mermaids alike in this show. One of the most anticipated phases of construction happened in late March when the exterior started to take shape and the large Pirates Voyage sign was placed outside the building. “Among our ‘pirates crew’ here for our new Dinner & Show, we like to say that we are going ‘overboard’ with the details as we prepare everything – from the show

elements to the new four-course menu to the exterior,” said Steve Cruz, Corporate Director of Marketing. “This is going to be a show that guests to our Smoky Mountain area are not going to want to miss. People have been asking for details, so we thought now would be a good time to share some of those.” Set to be complete in May, the construction phase is a $9 million project, in addition to the initial investment in the property for a total of $28 million. Electric Scooter Pilot Program Launches in Knoxville

HE CITY of Knoxville launched an electric scooter pilot program, with the first of two companies – Zagster, which operates the local Pace bike-sharing program, and VeoRide – selected through a competitive process. Both companies are the first electric scooter-sharing companies to provide services following a moratorium that allowed City officials time to review best practices and provide some guidance for a program. “We have taken our time to learn from other cities and feel we have selected two companies that will be flexible and responsive to the needs of Knoxville,” said Mayor Madeline Rogero. Initially the electric scooters will be staged across downtown and major residential and commercial corridors. “We’ve seen amazing success with Pace Bike Share and anticipate scooters to be welcomed by our community with similar excitement,” said Kim Bumpas, President of 14

Visit Knoxville. Per the pilot program rules and City ordinances, electric scooters must be ridden in the streets and are not allowed on sidewalks or greenways. Electric scooters will be treated similar to bicycles ridden on city roads. All details around the operations of the pilot program will be subject to change as the program evolves. The scooters can be ridden on many downtown streets but not currently on Market Square, Cumberland Avenue, or Henley Bridge. The Spin App provides uses with a map of areas where electric scooters are permitted. If a rider approaches the border of the approved area, the scooter will provide a warning to turn around or change direction or slow to a stop. Riders must be 18 years of age or 13-17 with adult permission and supervision. A valid identification indicating age will be required to rent a scooter. Scooters can travel at a maximum of 15

mph, but speeds may be lowered or restricted remotely based on special events. Currently scooter availability is 7 am to 9 pm daily and dependent on the weather and events. Rain, or the threat of rain, may make rentals unavailable. Spin and VeoRide will each provide an initial supply of 250 electric scooters and will adjust supply based on demand. The companies are responsible for moving, recharging, and restaging the scooters throughout the day. Scooters should be parked upright and out of the way of pedestrians or moving vehicles. Users are encouraged to park scooters adjacent to Pace bike stations or public bicycle racks. Individuals who misuse a scooter or park the scooter in a position that impedes pedestrian, bicycle, or motor vehicle traffic may be fined or ticketed. The pilot program is for one year, which can be renewed. The City, or the companies, may end the pilot agreement with 30 days’ notice.

Consider taking charge of your nutrition by adding in foods that help you feel decades younger. “What you eat and drink can have a tremendous impact on how you look and feel,” said Dawn Jackson Blatner, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist. “Eating healthy is important at any age, but as you get older, certain foods can have a powerful impact on your overall well-being.” Dawn’s top picks for food that fight aging include: Fish “Try substituting fish into meals a few times a week,” said Dawn. “Americans tend to eat less fish than people in other parts of the world, and they are missing out on great-tasting protein that’s packed with omega-3s.” Omega-3s support brain and heart health, two important considerations as you age. In fact, Mayo Clinic doctors believe that omega-3s reduce the risk of dying of heart disease. “Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel are good options,” she said. “Try buying wild-caught versus farm-raised when possible.” Eggs “Many people don’t realize the benefits of eating eggs, and when you choose the right type of egg, you get higher levels of omega-3s, B12, and vitamin E – all nutrients needed for healthy aging,” said Dawn. But there’s more: The National Cancer Institute states that cruciferous vegetables may help reduce the risk of some cancers. “These dark-green powerhouses pack a nutritional punch that supports healthy aging, so discover recipes that include cruciferous vegetables and other ‘anti-aging’ foods.” Following is one of Dawn’s favorite recipes featuring some of these ingredients. 18

Omega 3 Burrito (Makes 2 servings)

Ingredients: » 2 tablespoons olive oil » 2 tablespoons chopped red onion » 2 tablespoons cream cheese » 1 clove garlic, minced » 4 Eggland’s Best eggs (large) » 4 lacinato kale leaves, de-stemmed with leaves finely chopped » 4 ounces sliced smoked salmon » 2 10-inch whole-wheat tortillas » Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, add onion stirring occasionally until softened, approximately 3 minutes, then add garlic and cook for one minute. Add kale to skillet and toss to combine with garlic and onion. Continue sautéing for five minutes, or until kale becomes tender. Add Eggland’s Best eggs into skillet with kale and scramble until cooked through. Remove mixture from heat and set aside. If warm tortillas are desired, simply place them on a microwavable plate and cover with a damp paper towel. Microwave in 30-second intervals until warm. MAY 11, local arts non-profit Cattywampus Puppet Council will host its 3rd annual giant puppet community arts parade, the Appalachian Puppet Pageant, in East Knoxville in partnership with Carpetbag Theatre, African American Appalachian Arts, Inc, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and Our Community Organization. This parade seeks to bring together community members of all ages and backgrounds to share their stories and collective concerns through the visual and performing arts while playing together and raising power and joy as a community. A Home for Our Past: The Museum of East Tennessee History at 25 Feature Exhibition Updated and Extended

HEN THE MUSEUM of East Tennessee History opened in 1993, it fulfilled a shared vision to preserve and interpret the region’s rich history for the benefit of all; a vision first articulated a century and a half earlier. On May 5, 1834, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey addressed a group of a historicallyminded citizens gathered for the first annual meeting of the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. Concerned that many of the participants in Tennessee’s early history were passing away and with them their memories, Ramsey issued a call to action: “Let us hasten to redeem the time that is lost.” Today, 185 years later, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey’s plea to save Tennessee’s past continues to reverberate in the galleries of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s museum, a permanent home for our region’s cherished stories, traditions, and artifacts. The East Tennessee Historical Society actively began collecting artifacts and producing awardwinning interpretive exhibits in 1993, which has now grown to more than 15,000 artifacts housed within the East Tennessee History Center. In this special exhibition, ETHS is excited to highlight East Tennessee’s unique history through a variety of artifacts, with at least one exhibited item from each year of ETHS’s active 25 years of collections, most of which are on display for the first time. The exhibition, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Museum of East Tennessee History and the 10th of the signature exhibition “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee,” includes more than 35 artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of East Tennessee’s unique history. Some of the items include an 1883 Springfield penny-farthing, the first apparatus to be called a “bicycle;” an 1822 artificial hand that belonged to a teacher from Union County; a silver coffee and tea service from the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad presented to Superintendent James Baker

Hoxsie upon his retirement in 1866; a coverlet woven by one of the famed Walker sisters of Greenbrier; a shirt stating “Healing in the name of Jesus. Take up serpents, Acts 2:38” worn during religious services practicing snake handling in Cocke County; an 1817 bead necklace belonging to Eliza Sevier, the wife of Templin Ross and the granddaughter of both John Sevier and Cherokee Chief Oconostota; a 1907 baseball uniform from a coal town’s team in Marrion County; and the distinctive backdrop and wall clock from the WBIR-TV variety program “The Cas Walker Farm & Home Show.” The exhibit also features a brilliant display of East Tennessee furniture, textiles, folk art, instruments, and vintage toys. New artifacts have been added to the

exhibition for its extension, including a flag of the 39th Tennessee Regiment from the Battle of Horseshoe Bend; Civil War field drum, drumsticks, and daguerreotype that belonged to Martin E. Parmelle, Knoxville’s last Civil War veteran; a Tennessee muzzle-loading percussion rifle; a “Pots of Flowers” quilt attributed to Mary Jane Spangler Green that is said to have been hidden under her dress in Civil War raids to prevent being taken by Union soldiers; a wood-fired face jug by local potter Peter Rose; an 1825-1850 pie safe from the border of Greene and Hawkins Counties; a 1902 oak basket from the Riverdale Community of East Knoxville; a 1930s roadside sign for Indian Cave, the Grainger County tourist attraction; and paintings by Charles Krutch, Jim Gray, and Lucile Smith. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through June 9th. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Theatre will present a live stage adaptation of the beloved children’s novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The play is performed by 14 talented young actors from ages 12 to 17. The March sisters are portrayed by four veteran KCT performers: Brycen Ritchie plays Jo, Emma Stark plays Amy, and Beth is played by Maddy Grace Payne. Campbell Ella plays the oldest March sister Meg, while the sisters’ mother, Mrs. March, also known as Marme, is played by Kennis Van Dyke. The girls’ friend Laurence is played by Dale Gross. The rest of the cast features Nico Ellerbush, Starr Harrell, Logan Langley, Emmalea Merrell, Bella Patterson, Levi Vinsant, Alyssa Vogt, and Derrick Washington, Jr. The play is directed by KCT student intern, Charlotte Stark. The production team includes three students from the L&N STEM Academy: Quintin Rhodes, a junior, is the production’s lighting designer, and seniors Kennis Van Dyke and Derrick Washington, Jr. designed and built the costumes. Corbin Fram, an 8th grader at Gresham Middle School, provides the scenic design. The play’s stage manager is West Valley 8th grade student, Ava Bradshaw.

LUES AFICIONADOS are quite aware of guitar great Jimmie Ray Vaughan. He rose to fame as the axe handler for the Fabulous Thunderbirds and their smash hit, Tuff Enuff. This allowed him to work with such greats as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana, among many others. Since the T-birds disbanded, Jimmie has enjoyed a successful solo career, as well as teaming with others for fun side projects with such artists as Tanya Tucker and Dennis Quaid. He’s played in every one of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festivals and will again later this year. It was because of the release of his seventh solo album, “Baby, Please Come Home,” that I was afforded the opportunity to fulfill one of my journalistic goals: Interviewing the blues great. Regarding the story behind “Baby, Please Come Home,” Jimmie said: “It was just a lot of songs that I love. I went and recorded them down in San Marcos, Texas. It’s my band. We went and recorded what we wanted to, and there it is! It sounds more simple than it is, I guess. It’s the real deal for us.” When I asked Jimmie how this LP is different for him than all of the other albums – solo or otherwise – in recording, approach, and related areas, he shared: “Well, I didn’t change my approach. I mean, basically, what I do is record live in the studio. I’ll get together with my band, and we rehearse and just play the songs. Then we just go into the studio and record them. If we need to overdub something, we do. But basically, it’s live.” Artists will often point to a particular song on their disc as a calling card for the entire album, but Jimmie actually seemed a tad stumped. “Gosh! Listen, I like everything on it. I’ve got Lefty Frizzell, Jimmy Donley. Songs by Lloyd Price, Bill Doggett, Earl Garner. Did I say T. Bone Walker? It’s really all over the

place. When I first started playing, the first record that I bought was by a band called the Nightcaps. You know them. They were into the same thing. They even did some of the same songs. That’s really what I’m into. If you come see me, you’re gonna get all that, and I play stuff from my career over the years. But basically, I’m playing what I love.” I commented that the album is a “feel good” album that makes you involuntarily lift up your head and shoulders while tapping your feet. “I agree with you!” he said. “That’s really why we did it. It might be kinda hard to explain because it’s just what we do. It’s real, and we’re not trying to put on any airs. This is us.” I know that fans would want to hear an answer to this, so I had to ask: Will there ever be any sort of reunion with the Thunderbirds, and is Jimmie Ray ever going to do any more recording with Dennis Quaid again?

“Well, actually, I just did a song with Dennis Quaid and Tanya Tucker,” he said. “They came to town – they came to Austin and called me and said, ‘Hey, come over here and we’re gonna record. Come over and play guitar on a song.’ I just did it! There’s the answer to that one. “I would love for the Thunderbirds to get back together! Of course a couple of the guys have died. We had a lot of drummers and bass players. So maybe we could talk Mike Buck into it and get us another bass player. I’d love to play with Kim Wilson. I’m playing anyway and very proud and happy about what we did, Kim and I, back in the day. That would be fun!” Wrapping up our chat, I asked Jimmie how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy will be. “Oh, gosh! I don’t know that I want to come up with that answer,” he said. “I just want everybody to say what they want to say. I just have a lot of fun. I always have fun out here on the road with my buddies and me. We drive around and play guitars and play music, laugh and joke. This is the best job in the entire world! There couldn’t be a better job than this! You get to express yourself every night! Hang out with your friends. Sounds like a Willie Nelson song, doesn’t it? Ha! Ha! This Memorial Day Let’s Not Forget the Caregivers of our Military Veterans Past and Present Addressing the needs of caregivers helping our military, veteran heroes

OU’RE SITTING at home one night and get a phone call that your husband is being medevaced and he’s coming home. They said it was for spinal injuries,” said Mandy Spooneybarger, 36, caregiver to her husband, Charles, an Army veteran. “You have to live in your new normal. It’s stressful. It’s isolating. You have to let go of what you had. That is the hardest part. Sometimes it takes years. You can find strength from the person you are caring for. If you can, find other support.” One place to find that support has been the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. The organization recently received a grant from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes Campaign for innovative and evidencebased programs that address the long-term needs of military caregivers, spouses, parents, and loved ones caring for servicemembers and veterans at home. Veterans depend on caregivers “The ALA recognizes that many veterans depend daily on their dedicated caregivers,” said Kathy Dungan, national president of the organization. “We recognize how important it is to support caregivers and address the unique stresses they face to help ensure our nation’s heroes are supported for years to come.” 30

At the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF) last fall, the grant helped the Auxiliary provide several opportunities to empower caregivers and provide social support. Respite bags were handed out to each caregiver at registration. Although the event is centered around veterans, the bags and warm welcomes from Auxiliary volunteers and staff made the caregivers feel special. Programs relevant to the needs of military caregivers are typically focused on the servicemember or veteran and only incidentally related to the caregiver’s role. There are gaps in needed programs, which the grant helped to address. In addition, the funding provided the opportunity to build skills and confidence as caregivers. Caregivers need support, too Dolores Kostiw, 71, caregiver to her husband, Steve, an Air Force veteran, said, “I retired two years ago. I’m around to help do what he needs to do, make sure he gets in and out of the shower OK. If he needs help with his shoes or dressing of any sort, I can try and help him with that. It’s very hard because he’s first – I have to make sure he’s OK and everything before I can take care of myself.” According to a Rand Corp. study, there are more than 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers in the U.S. They spend many hours tending to the visible and invisible injuries or illnesses of their loved ones. In the study, 17%

of civilian caregivers reported spending more than 40 hours per week providing care; 12% of post-9/11 military caregivers and 10% of pre-9/11 military caregivers spent more than 40 hours per week. It’s OK not to be OK and ask for help “Anger is a big thing,” said Spooneybarger. “Address that as soon as you can, because that’s the biggest reason I see why people leave their spouses – unresolved anger. They take it out on the only safe place they know – the person holding their hand through the whole process.” For Kostiw, it’s about finding time for herself. “More than once you think, I can’t do this anymore, I want to get out of it, but then he needs something, and I have to be there for him to give it to him,” she said. “Do what you can and if you can’t do it, ask for help.” Through the educational program and social support opportunities that were offered at the NVCAF, Kostiw and others learned it was OK to not be OK and to ask for help as a caregiver. They had the opportunity to show their emotions in a welcoming environment with others in similar situations. Some also offered suggestions on how to cope based on their own experiences. shiver of anticipation through my soul. For us, warmer weather means barbecues and weekend get-togethers with friends. But, before I feel comfortable inviting everyone over, my home needs some TLC. Perhaps your does, too. At the top of my list are reorganizing, lawn maintenance, and a good deep cleaning of all my hard surfaces, including floors, counters, walkways, and decks. N GREEK mythology, Iris was the goddess of the rainbow; she was a messenger who brought an arc of color to the sky. In our gardens, the blooms of the iris bring a rainbow of color to our landscape. It doesn’t matter if you live on a country road or on a downtown street; iris are plants that catch your eye when in bloom. For most of Tennessee and the Mid-South, this begins in April and persists through May with other iris blooming later in the season. By midApril, the largest flush of bearded iris flowers are taking center stage in most gardens. There are 200-plus species of iris, including some North American natives. Species are separated into two main groups: Rhizomatous and bulbous. Bulbous irises form a more typical bulb and include Persian, reticulate, and many dwarf irises. Rhizomes are underground stems that grow horizontally and are used as storage for the plant. Bearded iris falls into this group, as do both the Japanese and Siberian iris. The Iris, genus Iridaceae, is the official state cultivated flower of Tennessee. While iris come in several different colors, the act naming the iris as the state flower did not name a particular color. However, by

common acceptance, the purple iris is considered the state cultivated flower. If you love and enjoy iris, you may consider having a secession of iris bloom in your garden comprised of several different species. This could begin with Iris reticulata a small bulbus iris, followed by a dwarf bearded iris like ‘little sighs.’ Next, add classic tall bearded iris to your garden. There are many to choose from; ‘Team Player’ and ‘Gypsy Lord’ are two

of my favorites. Follow this up with a Siberian iris like ‘Caesar’s Brother’ and Iris tectorum, the Japanese roof iris. If you like iris, why not get involved with one of the many iris societies we have right here in Tennessee, including the East Tennessee Iris Society in Knoxville? These can be great ways to meet new gardening friends, share knowledge, and gain insight into gardening in your specific region of the state. There are iris societies in neighboring states as well. To get more information, simply search the internet for any of these iris gardening groups or visit the website of the American Iris Society at www.irises.org. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. A BEAUTIFUL WHAT SPRING!

I really cannot remember a spring that has been any prettier. It seems like every morning when I am walking the dogs there is something new in bloom or leafing out. Maybe Mother Nature is trying to make up for all that grey, rainy nastiness earlier in the year! May is one of a gardener’s busiest months, so let’s get started on your to-do list: » Do your walk-about and see what is going on. Remember to look up, down, and all around! Look up to check for signs of disease or damage to larger shrubs and trees. Look down to check for moles/ voles. Look all around for signs of disease and insect damage in your smaller shrubs and perennials. What needs to be moved, divided, treated, or fertilized? Make notes about what you need to do. » If you are planting larger trees and shrubs this year, try to get them in by the end of the month. It is easier for the plants to establish root systems before they have to start battling the heat. Don’t panic if you don’t get everything planted, however. You

can still plant in June, but you will have to pay more attention to watering and nurturing. » Get those container gardens started while plants are small, but leave room for them to grow. Use a good quality potting soil and pick plants that like the same conditions. Also, remember that any planter that is outside in the elements should have a drain hole or it will become a water garden! Stop by if you need help making your selections. » Speaking of water, let’s talk a bit about that. Water issues are the number one plant killer. I am often told “we have a sprinkler system” when I ask about watering. Sprinkler systems are great for grass and flowers, but they are often woefully inadequate for trees and shrubs. You need to get 1” of water to the roots of larger plants every week, and most of you have no idea how much water your system puts out. A very easy way to tell is to put a tuna or cat food can under a section of your sprinkler and see how much water actually goes into it. It is also important to water deeper and less frequently. This

encourages plants to develop deep roots instead of shallow roots. » Did you mulch? If not, think about applying a fresh layer or top-dressing. At least go out and take a rake to old mulch to “fluff ” it, because it becomes very compacted over the winter. Mulch adds a neat look and keeps soil temperature and moisture levels stable. It also breaks down and adds nutrients to the soil. Please use hardwood or pine mulch! Cypress harvesting is decimating the forests, and I don’t recommend rubber. » You can prune spring bloomers once the blooms have faded. Forsythia and quince can be pruned somewhat severely. Be more selective with azaleas, rhododendrons, and lilacs. Call us if you have questions. I have seen some truly tragic pruning done, so please do a little research before you start whacking. » As your spring bulbs die back, don’t get in too big a hurry to cut them down. Wait until the foliage has died back, because it is storing the energy for next year’s blooms. If you cut them down too soon, it will have a negative impact on flower quantity. » Some of your perennials may need a little assistance as they emerge. Tall plants may need to be staked or caged, and it is easier to do that while the plants are small. You can also pinch plants back to encourage them to be shorter and bushier. » You will get a much longer bloom season if you deadhead on a regular basis. (Deadheading is cutting the spent blooms off, by the way.) You should do this to perennials AND annuals to keep those blooms coming! You can use your fingernails or scissors to remove them. Take the stalk down to the next leaf cluster to avoid having those ugly sticks poking up out of the plant. » We have lots of bugs already, but I encourage you to avoid using insecticides as much as possible. Always start with the least toxic product first, and spray when bees are not active. If you have a shrub that only blooms in the spring, wait until after it finishes before you apply insecticides. » My last pitch is for the birds. Keep those feeders and baths full and clean! Birds will remove lots of those pesky insects, so attract them to your yard with plants, houses, feeders, and water sources. We are getting several trucks in every week, so stop by often to see what is new. Happy gardening!

O THE CASUAL rock music listener, the name Nils Lofgren may not ring a bell. However, you can be assured that you’ve heard him if not as a solo artist, you most definitely have as guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, or time in Neil Young’s Crazy Horse (“then” – in the seventies – and now), in Ringo’s All Starr Band, or as the front man for one of his bands, Grin. So yeah, you’ve heard at least some of Nils’ work. It is because of the release of his latest album, Blue with Lou (featuring several songs he co-wrote with the late Lou Reed), that I reached out for my third interview with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee by phone at his home in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. I hadn’t spoken with him since I interviewed him about his Face the Music release almost five years ago. After some small talk, Nils cut to the chase to tell me about Blue with Lou. “I’m excited to have a band of a great group of friends that made a record,” he said. “My dear brother, Tommy, who I don’t get to play with enough. It’s going to be exciting to get some new music out. Six songs co-written with Lou Reed is something; I knew those songs had to be shared on this record, too. Just a lot of elements that I set out to try to accomplish. Very important were the Lou songs and being able to play and sing everything live and really know the songs well; not having to write a line or two and then a bridge. ‘I’ll figure out the melody there later. I like the chords.’ I’ve done all of that. Now, especially as I get older, I know I’m much better off creating something as live as possible. With good friends and great players, I was able to accomplish that, thankfully. “I was coming up with some ideas. Years 50

ago Lou and I wrote 13 songs together. Eight of them have been released; three by him. I put out three, originally, and a couple after that. And I always thought – regarding the ones left behind – Lou might call and say, ‘Hey, let’s take a look at those.’ And then, of course, tragically we lost Lou Reed, who was an incredible rock and roller, lyricist, poet, artist. I knew at that point – in the back of my mind – that the next record that I made, it would really be appropriate to get the notebooks out and get those songs in shape to record. That was part of it, too. “When we wrapped up the E Street Band tour in Australia – the River tour – our last legs were called the River. We did six weeks in Australia and New Zealand. And during that, I started writing in earnest and just kinda gathering my thoughts; working on the Lou songs; kind of refined them and arranged them. So there was that excitement. ‘Okay, now it’s time to make a record.’ “I’ve got the five Lou songs that nobody ever heard, and I wanted to re-do ‘City Lights’. That was a song that – when I sent Lou this

cassette tape of 13 songs – was one that he said, ‘Look, I love your chorus. I’m going to keep it and write a song about Charlie Chaplin. It’s a beautiful chorus.’” Nils points to two songs as the album’s calling cards. “I’m very mostly proud and attached to all these songs,” he said. “Just because of the nature of the lyric, there’s a song called ‘Give’ that I think is kind of representative of the record in the sense that it’s a classic lyric by Lou. Give everything you got. There’s a six or seven minute jam that we kept on the record live as it went down. It reminded me of the old days of Cream and the Hendrix Experience, where there were power trios and long jams, which people don’t put on records anymore.” Nils shared so much during our chat, and virtually all of it can be read on www. boomerocity.com. But in wrapping up our chat, I asked Nils how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. He said, in part: “Randy, I’m not ready to write my epitaph. I can’t go there. Ha! Ha! I hope I got a good piece of time left. I’ll be a bit more excited about what I’ve accomplished in the next 10 years than the past 67 years or whatever. But anyway, that’s the best I can give you right now.” Nils will be performing songs from Blue with Lou in Nashville and Atlanta this month. New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on May 3

pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from May 3-31. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Grace and Grandeur by Sam Stapleton and John Vavruska in the Balcony Gallery Tw o p h o t o g r a phers born in 1951, Sam Stapleton and J o h n Va v r u s k a , grew up in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains: Sam on the western side in the town of Kingsport, TN, and John on the eastern slopes in Waynesville, NC. Sam Stapleton Both were heavily influenced by the culture and natural beauty of the southern Appalachians, both subsequently obtained professional degrees from John Vavruska the University of Tennessee (Sam in accounting and John in engineering), and both began their serious pursuit of photography in the early 1970s. When they met in 1976, it was their shared love of photography that provided the foundation for their friendship, and for two years, they shared a house and a darkroom they built themselves. Time separated them: Vavruska was drawn to the American west in the early 1980s, served in the Peace Corps in Nepal, and then settled in Santa Fe, where he now resides with his wife of 30+ years; Stapleton remained close to his roots in Knoxville, where he too resides with his wife of 30+ years. Yet with all of their similarities, the two have drifted apart in their photographic vision and now occupy virtual opposite ends of the photographic spectrum. Vavruska has remained primarily in the analog (film) world and has grown in the direction of large (4x5”) format black and white photography, capturing the grandeur of the natural landscape through hand-crafted gelatin silver prints. Conversely, Stapleton remained with small (35mm) format photography but converted whole-heartedly to digital technology, where he continues to focus on the intimate color imagery of the East Tennessee landscape. While one’s images convey a high level of detail and tonal gradation, another’s use the spontaneity of the smaller format to explore the abstract and impressionistic capabilities of the medium. This exhibit is to share their

story – the story of two men with a common photographic grounding that has matured into expressions of widely divergent visions.

BJ Adams Pairs: Work by the New Image Artists in the Main Gallery This fiber and mixed media exhibition, curated by Trudi Van Dyke, features 13 contemporary fiber artists who are juried members of the New Image Artists group. Members are active studio artists who work primarily with cloth, paper, and alternative materials. The concept of “pairs” challenged the artists to consider their work as it developed in theme or concept and how one piece could influence the artist to create a companion piece. Unlike a diptych, each new work stands alone, and yet its voice is more fully developed when viewed as a pair that evolved from the subject, materials, or some other element of the initial work. When conceiving work for Pairs, the artists experimented with relationships between subject, media, and techniques. The artists began in a creative dimension without boundaries and chose a concept or subject without limits. The first work was planned and sometimes completed when the artist found a way to morph the idea, media, or subject into a complementary piece. The resulting pair effectively enables viewers a more in-depth appreciation than a solitary work. Knoxville: Special Light by Allen Monsarrat in the Display Case A l l e n Monsarrat’s first art career was as a studio potter in Friendsville, TN, for 25 years, fol l owe d by a career in decorative wall finishes, faux painting, Allen Monsarrat cabinetry finishing, and the occasional mural project. Never one to sit still, he turned to fine art painting, which has developed into a concentration on representational work, including photorealism (paintings intended to look like photographs). Monsarrat’s source material comes from photographs he has taken, which allows him to carefully design a composition and have plenty of information to include as

much detail as he chooses. As his reference source, a photograph allows him to study the nuances of color, light, and reflection and how they change across a seemingly uniformly colored surface. Monsarrat uses translucent layers of paint to build depth unachievable with ink on paper. He began working in pastels in 2018, and for this exhibition, he will display oil paintings and pastels that depict iconic Knoxville scenes. Anna Halliwell Boyd: Forget Me Not (Really) on the North Wall Anna Halliwell Boyd is a mixed media artist and arts educator from Oak Ridge. During her undergraduate Anna Halliwell Boyd years and first graduate program, she made watercolors, ceramic sculptures, oil paintings, and drawings that alluded to the bizarre, sad nature of witnessing the decay of her grandmother’s mind with Alzheimer’s. Her recent works use mixed media to convey themes of loss and how the past is recollected. The photographs she took growing up are often resurrected in her work to convey lost connections with others and the distorted nature of memory.

Rodney Yardley Rodney Yardley: Barns, Beer Joints, and Baptist Churches in the Atrium Rodney Yardley is a self-taught photographer and part-time flaneur from Knoxville. Much of his time is spent trying to capture the feeling of memories and dreams using tools from antique film cameras to modern digital cameras and cell phones. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 pm. Knox Heritage Celebrates 45 Years

N 1974, the Bijou Theatre was threatened by demolition

and neglect. The historic venue that had once hosted the Marx Brothers, Dizzy Gillespie, and many other entertainers had fallen on hard times. The wrecking ball was poised to wipe out an important part of Knoxville’s history. But a group of concerned citizens was determined not to let that happen. They formed an organization called Knoxville Heritage, a name later changed to Knox Heritage. Incorporated on April Fools’ Day in 1974 and founded in the Dulin Art Gallery on Kingston Pike, Knox Heritage was thereafter dedicated to protecting and preserving structures and places in Knox County with historic or cultural significance. In the nick of time, the group raised the money to purchase the Bijou Theatre and save it for future generations to enjoy. Since its founding, Knox Heritage has aimed to educate everyone about the benefits of historic preservation. It has acquired blighted houses that once were the worst examples of neglect and restored them to attractive homes, improving historic neighborhoods. It has helped secure funding for development projects that contribute to the revitalization of downtown. It has called attention to some of Knox County’s most endangered cultural and historic assets, encouraging owners to preserve these unique places for the next generation. And it has helped build a broad network of those that value historic preservation throughout the community. Tireless dedication from countless volunteers serving on the board and committees, financial support from members, hardworking and

talented staff, and the growing awareness of the importance of historic preservation by the community all have enabled Knox Heritage to celebrate many success stories over the course of this history. Knox Heritage continues to grow and expand its influence in preservation. Today’s organization often works regionally, holds protective easements on several historic properties, manages the Salvage Shop on N. Broadway, and owns and operates historic properties such as the Airplane Filling Station on Clinton Highway and the Historic Westwood estate, which serves as its home office. Its annual fundraisers, such as the Summer Supper series, are hugely popular in the community. History Alive! Summer Day Camp June 17-21 at Marble Springs State Historic Site

ROM JUNE 17-21, Marble Springs State Historic Site will hold its History Alive! Summer Day Camp for kids entering grades 4 through 6 in the fall. For five incredible hands-on days, children will be immersed in East Tennessee history on 35 beautiful acres of urban wilderness that were once a part of Governor John Sevier’s farm. Traditional skills, crafts, music, and games of the frontier settlers and Native Americans will be taught by area experts. The cost of the camp is $100 per child. of the internet and social media, the key to a successful sales career relied upon the ability of the salesperson to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship between the client, the client’s company, the salesperson, and the company he or she represented. This relationship often required years of effort but resulted in a level of confidence and trust in each party and their respective companies, which represented an enormous competitive advantage for the successful salesperson and an incredible uphill battle for their competition. A great deal has changed since then. Gone by the wayside are the two martini lunches, fishing trips, dinners with clients and their spouses, pagers, long lines at pay phones, cell phones the size of a shoebox, and company cars. Please understand that I’m not pining for the “good old days.” Personally, I enjoy the many technological advances that allow me to operate so much more efficiently than in the past. These same advances also help us respect our clients’ time. As a small business owner of nearly 35 years, I appreciate the fact that increased competition has required each of us

But you’ve got to become a “five percenter.” to do more with less, but it has unfortunately come at a very high price, as the personal relationships with our clients are oftentimes far less than they were previously. This reduction in face time with clients has fostered today’s commodity marketplace environment. Most clients I meet with are confused by the deluge of emails blasts, cell phone calls, and, in my industry, media consultants that drop in unannounced, each claiming their product or service is superior to that of their competition. Overwhelmed, clients often jump at the savings that they believe will result from a lower price, unaware that this low price typically comes at a cost that, more often than not, offsets any perceived savings. Not knowing who they can trust, prospective clients often turn a deaf ear to every salesperson, account executive, etc. that they encounter. With our continued dependence on technology and growing acceptance of commodity

marketplaces, an invisible, technological “firewall” exists that jeopardizes the very client relationships that once were the hallmark of success for both buyer and seller. Is there a solution? There always is. But you’ve got to become a “five percenter.” That’s the title I’ve assigned to that small group of salespeople who have successfully differentiated themselves, their company, and their products and services with their clients. They still embrace technology. They respect their clients and their own time, recognizing that we must all do more with less. Most importantly, they believe that success in selling occurs not when the sale is consummated, but rather when the client successfully utilizes the seller’s products or services. Five percenters do not hide behind technology’s firewall, which causes their products and services to become mere commodities with price their only weapon. Five percenters not only make more money than their peers, but they also enjoy a personal level of fulfillment and satisfaction, and the uncommon respect and trust of a large and loyal customer base that’s nearly impenetrable, that eludes the ninety-five percenters. It’s your call.
