H A V E B E E N blessed to have three great women role models in my life as I was growing up. My mother, grandmother, and aunt were all instrumental in shaping my character and my outlook on life, which has resulted in the person I am today. My mom taught me how a Photo by D. Roberts Photography mother’s love is so important in a child’s development. Mom was devoted to her two daughters, and she unselfishly gave her all for them. I grew up in the ’50s when few women worked outside the home, but my mom (and dad) wanted a home in a nice suburb where their kids could grow up in a safe neighborhood. So my mom worked to help save for the down payment, but she was always there for us for all the important times in our life, and for that unselfish love, I am forever grateful. Grandma Emily, the only grandmother I knew, became a widow shortly after I was born, and her grandkids were 4

the light of her life. But grandma was not one to sit idly. She kept busy with social events, club activities, and volunteering, as well as cooking wonderful meals for us when my mom was at work. Grandma Emily taught me to dream and dream big and not to let anyone take that dream away. She taught me to focus on the positive and not to let the negative take me down. And my aunt LaVerne, who married later in life and raised three boys of her own, had a hand in raising me and my sister. My aunt was a career woman who pursued a college education and graduated tops in her class. She instilled in me the importance of an education and, in fact, her chosen career in medical technology became my chosen career. There is so much more I could say about these three women, but during this month, when we celebrate moms and those in that role, I just want to say how grateful I am to have had them in my life. I miss them all every day, but their influence will never be forgotten.

LTHOUGH I BEGAN my

professional career as an architect, my true passion has always been to build affordable, custombuilt homes that are a reflection of the occupants’ personal tastes — one that is designed to meet not only their current lifestyle needs, but their future needs as well. I have been blessed to have worked on some great projects in the past, both commercial and residential. But my real passion will always be in serving the needs of area homeowners. That’s why I launched Personal Space, LLC. We’re truly unique. We are niche builders created for families that are underserved by contractors that build multimillion-dollar homes and contractors that build multiple homes simultaneously in area developments. My goal is to provide the average West Knoxville family with a custom home that they can both afford and will love for many years to come. I am the founder and sole owner of Personal Space, LLC and a West Knoxville

resident. Our crews are comprised of very talented and experienced people who truly love what they do and who want to share their diverse skills with families right here in our community. If you’re wondering about the name Personal Space, LLC, you’re not alone. We have all become familiar with the terms “man caves” and “she sheds.” Many homeowners have had to sacrifice design for other factors when home buying, then they are left trying to find ways to make the spaces personal. I encourage homeowners to ask themselves, “How can I make this space work for my entire family?” Would this room make a better office, home theater, or wine room? Would an addition make our kitchen work more efficiently? Do the finishes in my home really suit me? Ask yourself if your

home’s design “sparks joy” for you. Personal Space, LLC offers homeowners a quality product, professional services, and a reliable partner. We show up when we say we will show up, and we stay with you until the job is complete. We pride ourselves in finding solutions for even the most challenging projects. Each of our foremen is a carpenter with more than 20 years of experience. Their long careers as craftsmen are your assurance that every project will be completed both professionally and to your full satisfaction Whether you are contemplating an addition, a remodel, or a new home, I invite you to discover the Personal Space, LLC difference. We work with interior designers, realtors, and directly with homeowners. We are skilled in-home renovation projects from new additions to backyard decks, custom built-ins and trim, adaptive reuses, and restoration repair. To learn more, call us today at 865271-7998 and schedule your no-cost, no-obligation, in-home consultation and discover the Personal Space, LLC difference for yourself.

You Might Need a New Closet

B

O R R O W I N G F R O M Jeff Foxworthy, here are some thoughts about organization: » If more clothes are on the floor than on your hanging rod, you might need a new closet. » If your wire shelving is falling from the wall, you might need a new closet. » If you wear the same pair of shoes every day because you can’t find the ones you want, you might need a new closet. » If your organizing system is to shut the closet door so you can’t see the clutter, you might need a new closet. There are many reasons to consider getting a new closet system: To get better organized, to have more storage, to make a more beautiful space. The best reason to do any project in the home is to add joy to your life – to create a space that is welcoming and saves time getting dressed. Before the current Maria Kondo craze, NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals) members have helped clients deal with clutter and be better organized. Professional organizers help to demystify the challenges faced in

being more productive at home. Barbara Hemphill introduced the “Art of Wastebasketry™” in her book Taming the Paper Tiger at Home. It was Barbara that said, “Clutter is postponed decisions™.” In other words, the first step is deciding what needs to be edited. Then Julie Morgenstern wrote Organizing from the Inside Out, which states that we have to accept responsibility for our disorganization. She shares that change starts within us; the problem is not caused by others. When Peter Walsh came on the national organizing scene, his theme was (and still is) we need to Lighten Up. Our clutter is weighing us down. Now it’s Maria Kondo’s time in the spotlight sharing that our things must bring us joy. These are all great principles to learn from when organizing around the house, especially starting a closet design project. After the clutter is gone, a good custom storage design will give the best use of space. It can be grand or simple. Either way, having

a system designed for your needs will keep things accessible and organized. And today’s closet systems have flexibility to change as your needs change. If your closet does not add value to your life, then you need a new closet. Call Closets by McKenry for your complimentary consultation.

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces 16th Annual Heritage Happening Gala and Auction May 18

P

REPARATIONS ARE WELL underway for the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center’s 16th annual Heritage Happening Dinner and Auction. The well-attended event supports the Heritage Center’s goals to preserve, communicate, and celebrate the rich history of the Smoky Mountains and their people. This year the Heritage Happening will be held at the Center’s home in Townsend on Saturday evening, May 18. It will feature both silent and live auctions, as well as an elegant dinner catered by Rothchild’s of Knoxville. Guests will enjoy live Appalachian music and welcome from local writer and storyteller, Sam Venable. The wide array of unique items to be auctioned this year includes beautiful artwork from area craftsmen, destination vacation trips, wine, Smoky Mountain activities, and food and dining experiences, thanks to the generosity of donors across East Tennessee and to the dedication of our Guild members who solicit these diverse items. To preview action items, visit www.auctria.com/auction/ HH2019. Items will be continually added, so 10

check the website frequently. The Heritage Center Guild was founded by a group of 21 women in 2003 with a goal of helping to raise funds for the yet-to-bebuilt Heritage Center museum. According to the Guild’s mission, it annually hosts the Heritage Happening auction and dinner to help support the continuing development of the Center and its extensive educational programs for children. This year more than 6,000 students are expected to participate in the Center’s unique educational programs. Commenting on the Guild’s role in the Heritage Center’s story, Director Bob Patterson said, “We could not do educational programming, bring in new exhibits, maintain our grounds, and fund transportation for visiting schoolchildren, among many other needs, if it were not for this Guild. In addition to their fundraising efforts, they volunteer thousands of hours each year’s in support of school field trips, festivals, and concerts.” Invitations to the 2019 Heritage Happening were mailed in April to Heritage Center members and past attendees, but all are welcome

to purchase tickets by calling the Heritage Center at 865-448-0044 Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm or by going online to www.auctria.com/auction/HH2019 or visiting the Heritage Center website at www. gsmheritagecenter.org. Tickets are $125 per person, $90 of which is tax deductible. Online pre-bidding on silent auction items will open on or around May 1st, and a code to access the auction site will be emailed to ticket holders on that date. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 501(c)(3) Museum and Cultural Center. The Heritage Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from noon to 5 pm. Admission is free for Heritage Center members, adults are $8, seniors 60+ and children ages 6-17 are $6, and children 5 and under are free. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is a not-forprofit museum and is located between the traffic light and the national park entrance on scenic Highway 73. Pirates Voyage Taking Shape in Pigeon Forge as Construction Progresses

D

OLLY PARTON is making good on staking her claim in Pigeon Forge with the construction of the Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, her newest attraction in the Smokies, and the treasure – buried and otherwise – already has begun to arrive and take shape at the venue. Construction on the Pirates Voyage building, located on the Parkway adjacent to The Island in Pigeon Forge, began the first week in January. The first – and biggest – task was to “build” the lagoon, the centerpiece of the set that will house the two pirate ships where the action of the entire show takes place. The digging of that foundation required removing more than 281 loads of dirt via dump truck for more than a month (that’s 4,500 cubic yards or 7,500 tons of dirt!); that part of the project was completed in February. That 15-foot lagoon soon will hold 300,000 gallons of water. The installation and finishing of 600 cubic yards of concrete and 50,000 lbs. of steel in the 30,000 square foot arena began the week of February 25. An extensive nationwide talent search 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2019

began as soon as this entertainment project was announced last fall, and the cast of 20 has already begun show rehearsals and intense training for the acrobatic and diving skills required of pirates and mermaids alike in this show. One of the most anticipated phases of construction happened in late March when the exterior started to take shape and the large Pirates Voyage sign was placed outside the building. “Among our ‘pirates crew’ here for our new Dinner & Show, we like to say that we are going ‘overboard’ with the details as we prepare everything – from the show

elements to the new four-course menu to the exterior,” said Steve Cruz, Corporate Director of Marketing. “This is going to be a show that guests to our Smoky Mountain area are not going to want to miss. People have been asking for details, so we thought now would be a good time to share some of those.” Set to be complete in May, the construction phase is a $9 million project, in addition to the initial investment in the property for a total of $28 million. Reservations are now being taken for all 2019 shows. Ticket information is available at www.piratesvoyage.com or by calling 865-505-AHOY (2469).

Electric Scooter Pilot Program Launches in Knoxville

T

HE CITY of Knoxville launched an electric scooter pilot program, with the first of two companies – Zagster, which operates the local Pace bike-sharing program, and VeoRide – selected through a competitive process. Both companies are the first electric scooter-sharing companies to provide services following a moratorium that allowed City officials time to review best practices and provide some guidance for a program. “We have taken our time to learn from other cities and feel we have selected two companies that will be flexible and responsive to the needs of Knoxville,” said Mayor Madeline Rogero. Initially the electric scooters will be staged across downtown and major residential and commercial corridors. “We’ve seen amazing success with Pace Bike Share and anticipate scooters to be welcomed by our community with similar excitement,” said Kim Bumpas, President of 14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2019

Visit Knoxville. Per the pilot program rules and City ordinances, electric scooters must be ridden in the streets and are not allowed on sidewalks or greenways. Electric scooters will be treated similar to bicycles ridden on city roads. All details around the operations of the pilot program will be subject to change as the program evolves. The scooters can be ridden on many downtown streets but not currently on Market Square, Cumberland Avenue, or Henley Bridge. The Spin App provides uses with a map of areas where electric scooters are permitted. If a rider approaches the border of the approved area, the scooter will provide a warning to turn around or change direction or slow to a stop. Riders must be 18 years of age or 13-17 with adult permission and supervision. A valid identification indicating age will be required to rent a scooter. Scooters can travel at a maximum of 15

mph, but speeds may be lowered or restricted remotely based on special events. Currently scooter availability is 7 am to 9 pm daily and dependent on the weather and events. Rain, or the threat of rain, may make rentals unavailable. Spin and VeoRide will each provide an initial supply of 250 electric scooters and will adjust supply based on demand. The companies are responsible for moving, recharging, and restaging the scooters throughout the day. Scooters should be parked upright and out of the way of pedestrians or moving vehicles. Users are encouraged to park scooters adjacent to Pace bike stations or public bicycle racks. Individuals who misuse a scooter or park the scooter in a position that impedes pedestrian, bicycle, or motor vehicle traffic may be fined or ticketed. The pilot program is for one year, which can be renewed. The City, or the companies, may end the pilot agreement with 30 days’ notice.

Who Do You Rely on for Your 401(k) Investment Strategy?

ID YOU KNOW that 6 in 10 people think their 401(k) will be their biggest source of income in retirement? Which makes sense when we consider that more than 73% of the employer pension plans that existed 20 years ago are now closed, frozen, or terminated. We’re Yvonne Marsh, on our own when it comes to creating CFP®, CPA retirement income using our employer-sponsored retirement plans. Your employer chooses which investment funds to offer within the plan, but they are prohibited by law from giving you investment advice. It can feel overwhelming when it comes to knowing which funds to pick and how often to rebalance. And who has the time or energy to research investment options after a long day at work? That’s where our new service, Plan Confidence, can help. A recent Schwab 401(k) participant survey found that more than 77% of people said they would be “extremely confident” or “very confident” in their investment choices if they had the help of a professional. And in fact, a study published by the Vanguard Group in 2014 finds that using a professional investment advisor boosts your average return by 3% over time. The increase comes from improved portfolio diversification, regular rebalancing, and behavioral coaching. Using specialized software tools, we can provide customized 401(k) investment advice. And it’s easy! There is no need to roll your account over to an IRA. Your money stays right where it is – in your 401(k) plan, and we help you choose from within the options offered. Step 1: We assess your risk tolerance with an easy-touse questionnaire. Step 2: Within your password-protected Plan Confidence account, we create personalized investment recommendations using your existing 401(k) options. Step 3: We give you step-by-step instructions on how to implement our suggestions. Step 4: We send you friendly quarterly reminders with rebalancing instructions and any updates. With 24/7 access to your Plan Confidence account, you can review your recommendations and change your risk tolerance at any time. It’s easy to try because there is no long-term contract. And it’s economical: Monthly fees range from $35 to $95, depending on account size. If you’re one of the 6 in 10 people who think your 401(k) will be the biggest source of income in retirement, don’t guess at your investment choices. Get started building your Plan Confidence today.

of people, Stephanie Trost, a retired commercial banker, experienced nervousness and anxiety when visiting the dentist. Stephanie shared her experience with a local oral surgeon who recommended Dr. Vyas and Farragut Dental Studio. “Dr. Vyas and his team of dental professionals were absolutely amazing. He gave me a technique to use while they were doing my impressions that totally worked for me. Before I knew it, the process was over, and I was able after a year to finally move forward with my needed dental procedure. “I shared with Dr. Vyas how I had been battling a dental issue for over a year. I was told that I only had one option: Implants. I was previously told that I had a gagging reflux issue and would never be able to wear dentures. I felt that my real issue was dental anxiety and not a true gagging reflux. I had multiple conversations with my former dentist who told me, along with his staff, that I was wrong and that my only option was implants. Dr. Vyas reassured me and helped me to overcome my anxiety. “I was actually able to get my impressions done in a single visit. His procedure and manner were totally different from what I had experienced previously. Within a week, I had my new teeth made, had my extractions completed at an oral surgeon’s office, and I now have a beautiful new smile. And I have an entirely new appreciation for not only the medical component of my treatment, but also the personal, almost spiritual component of my treatment that gave me a true sense of inner peace. His patience and kind manner were priceless. I will be forever grateful for the difference Dr. Vyas has made in my life.” Stephanie also appreciated the warm and friendly atmosphere that patients experience at Farragut Dental Studio, which further helped her to feel at ease and to put her mind at rest. “It is my pleasure to recommend Dr. Vyas and his team of compassionate and caring dental care professionals to everyone I speak to and not only those individuals who experience apprehension when visiting a dentist,” she said. EATING TO AGE GRACEFULLY: TOP TIPS FROM A REGISTERED DIETITIAN A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

HAT IF YOU WERE 60 but felt more like you were

30? Consider taking charge of your nutrition by adding in foods that help you feel decades younger. “What you eat and drink can have a tremendous impact on how you look and feel,” said Dawn Jackson Blatner, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist. “Eating healthy is important at any age, but as you get older, certain foods can have a powerful impact on your overall well-being.” Dawn’s top picks for food that fight aging include: Fish “Try substituting fish into meals a few times a week,” said Dawn. “Americans tend to eat less fish than people in other parts of the world, and they are missing out on great-tasting protein that’s packed with omega-3s.” Omega-3s support brain and heart health, two important considerations as you age. In fact, Mayo Clinic doctors believe that omega-3s reduce the risk of dying of heart disease. “Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel are good options,” she said. “Try buying wild-caught versus farm-raised when possible.” Eggs “Many people don’t realize the benefits of eating eggs, and when you choose the right type of egg, you get higher levels of omega-3s, B12, and vitamin E – all nutrients needed for healthy aging,” said Dawn. She suggests Eggland’s Best eggs, which have 25% less saturated fat, more than double the omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E, and more than double the amount of vitamin B12. Eggland’s Best has superior nutrition due to its proprietary all-vegetarian hen feed that contains healthy grains, canola oil, and a wholesome supplement of rice bran, alfalfa, sea kelp, and vitamin E. Our ability to absorb energizing B12 decreases with age, so getting B12 in places like EB eggs is important. Also important in EB eggs is the antioxidant vitamin E, which can act like an internal “sunscreen” to protect skin from sun damage and help skin age more gracefully. “A better egg equals a better recipe,” she said. “Eggland’s Best eggs are the only eggs I recommend to my clients and serve to my family – double the omega-3s will help promote healthier aging.” Berries “Antioxidants protect your cells from damage and support a strong immune system,” said Dawn. “This is incredibly important as you age so you can stay healthy and feel younger.” Packed with vitamins C and E, berries are a superfood great for snacking and cooking. Try eating an array of colorful berries each week to give your body the antioxidants it craves. Blueberries are particularly well-known for their antioxidant properties. “The sky is the limit for berry versatility,” she said. “Sprinkle some in yogurt, make a smoothie, add some to a salad, or eat as a healthy dessert.” Cruciferous vegetables “Pack your plate with cruciferous vegetables as you age,” said Dawn. “These are members of the cabbage family and include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and kale.” These tasty greens are great fresh or cooked, providing plenty of fiber to help keep your digestion on track, which is a concern for many as they age. But there’s more: The National Cancer Institute states that cruciferous vegetables may help reduce the risk of some cancers. “These dark-green powerhouses pack a nutritional punch that supports healthy aging, so discover recipes that include cruciferous vegetables and other ‘anti-aging’ foods.” Following is one of Dawn’s favorite recipes featuring some of these ingredients. 18

Omega 3 Burrito (Makes 2 servings)

Ingredients: » 2 tablespoons olive oil » 2 tablespoons chopped red onion » 2 tablespoons cream cheese » 1 clove garlic, minced » 4 Eggland’s Best eggs (large) » 4 lacinato kale leaves, de-stemmed with leaves finely chopped » 4 ounces sliced smoked salmon » 2 10-inch whole-wheat tortillas » Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, add onion stirring occasionally until softened, approximately 3 minutes, then add garlic and cook for one minute. Add kale to skillet and toss to combine with garlic and onion. Continue sautéing for five minutes, or until kale becomes tender. Add Eggland’s Best eggs into skillet with kale and scramble until cooked through. Remove mixture from heat and set aside. If warm tortillas are desired, simply place them on a microwavable plate and cover with a damp paper towel. Microwave in 30-second intervals until warm. Spread cream cheese on the tortillas and lay salmon onto tortilla. Spoon egg and kale mixture into center of tortillas. Roll up burrito-style, tucking in the ends and enjoy.

F Y O U F I N D yourself comparing your smile to others whose smiles exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth, then perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve a whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many. Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces. Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster. Patients report that Invisalign

aligners fit and feel better. Also, innovations in the Invisalign procedure move more smiles, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners. Perhaps what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend your treatment without ever having met you. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist?

To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

Even in My 60s, I Lost 20 Pounds and Got into the Best Shape of My Life!

“T

HE FIRST time I exercised was one week after our second daughter was born,” said Jan Berry, mom and busy chemical engineer. “I ran about one-quarter mile and thought I would die. This was in the 1970s and no one was running. “I kept exercising. Running and swimm i n g i n t h e ’ 70 s ; running, water skiing, aerobics, and weight lifting in the ’80s; step aerobics, water and snow skiing, and weight lifting in the ’90s. When I turned 50 in the early 2000s, I started injuring myself when I would push myself hard to exercise. I had to quit exercising so much, and I gained weight and started having knee and hip problems. “I realized I needed personalized help, so I joined Fitness Together in 2013. The personal trainer recognized that my muscles were not balanced and started me on flexibility exercises for specific muscle groups. During each session, the trainer would push me a little harder while making sure I maintained excellent form. No matter how hard I worked with the Fitness Together personal trainer, I never got injured. “The personal trainers are truly personal. They get to know you, understand how to motivate you, and encourage you to stay committed to good health. My trainer also helped me with improving my diet, although I was already a vegetarian (who eats fish) and eating fairly low carbs. I started tracking what I ate. I was eating the right sized portions. I lost 20 lbs and reduced my body fat from 33% to 26%. I’m 70 years old now and in the best shape of my life. I have good energy and look forward to my personalized training sessions.” When asked if she would recommend Fitness Together to others, Jan replied, “Yes, absolutely. You’re never too old or have too many physical problems to improve your well-being. Keep a positive attitude, keep going even when you’re tired or want to stop, and be curious. I’m studying to be a personal trainer myself. It will be fun to encourage others to make the best of life with energy and enthusiasm.” Are you ready to improve your personal well-being? For Your Peace of Mind and Safety of Your Four-Legged Kid

W

HO’S TAKING CARE of your

family dog when you’re out of town? Is he home alone, with a sitter that only visits for a few minutes a couple times a day, visiting relatives, or having a vacation of his own at a doggy resort? In determining your four-legged kid’s best option, talk to people you trust and ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Tour boarding facilities and meet the staff who will care for your kid. Inquire about the daily routine of the facility. Is it the same on weekends and major holidays as it is on weekdays? Is the staff skilled in administering needed medications, including insulin injections? Are they trained to detect issues of concern? What are the costs for extra/individualized care? These are just a few questions you should ask prior to going out of town. Ms. C’s invites all prospective guest owners to tour our resort anytime during lobby hours. The staff is eager to meet owners and explain the daily schedule, which is consistent seven days a week, including holidays. In return, the owners provide vital information

to properly care for each individual pet. Examples include separation anxiety, requiring more one-on-one attention, or a torn or ruptured cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), which may limit exercise and require greater observation. Ask the resort if there are additional charges to accommodate these special circumstances. Ms. C’s is an all-inclusive resort without additional charges to meet the individual needs of our guests. Excellent care is possible when owners are candid with kennel staff regarding personality and health issues of their pet. Your veterinarian is also a vital link between you and the kennel staff. Going the extra mile in caring for your dog is a partnership between you, the owner, and the kennel staff, with honest, open communication the key, allowing you to travel with true peace of mind.

A Home for Our Past: The Museum of East Tennessee History at 25 Feature Exhibition Updated and Extended

W

HEN THE MUSEUM of East Tennessee History opened in 1993, it fulfilled a shared vision to preserve and interpret the region’s rich history for the benefit of all; a vision first articulated a century and a half earlier. On May 5, 1834, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey addressed a group of a historicallyminded citizens gathered for the first annual meeting of the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. Concerned that many of the participants in Tennessee’s early history were passing away and with them their memories, Ramsey issued a call to action: “Let us hasten to redeem the time that is lost.” Today, 185 years later, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey’s plea to save Tennessee’s past continues to reverberate in the galleries of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s museum, a permanent home for our region’s cherished stories, traditions, and artifacts. The East Tennessee Historical Society actively began collecting artifacts and producing awardwinning interpretive exhibits in 1993, which has now grown to more than 15,000 artifacts housed within the East Tennessee History Center. In this special exhibition, ETHS is excited to highlight East Tennessee’s unique history through a variety of artifacts, with at least one exhibited item from each year of ETHS’s active 25 years of collections, most of which are on display for the first time. The exhibition, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Museum of East Tennessee History and the 10th of the signature exhibition “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee,” includes more than 35 artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of East Tennessee’s unique history. Some of the items include an 1883 Springfield penny-farthing, the first apparatus to be called a “bicycle;” an 1822 artificial hand that belonged to a teacher from Union County; a silver coffee and tea service from the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad presented to Superintendent James Baker

Hoxsie upon his retirement in 1866; a coverlet woven by one of the famed Walker sisters of Greenbrier; a shirt stating “Healing in the name of Jesus. Take up serpents, Acts 2:38” worn during religious services practicing snake handling in Cocke County; an 1817 bead necklace belonging to Eliza Sevier, the wife of Templin Ross and the granddaughter of both John Sevier and Cherokee Chief Oconostota; a 1907 baseball uniform from a coal town’s team in Marrion County; and the distinctive backdrop and wall clock from the WBIR-TV variety program “The Cas Walker Farm & Home Show.” The exhibit also features a brilliant display of East Tennessee furniture, textiles, folk art, instruments, and vintage toys. New artifacts have been added to the

exhibition for its extension, including a flag of the 39th Tennessee Regiment from the Battle of Horseshoe Bend; Civil War field drum, drumsticks, and daguerreotype that belonged to Martin E. Parmelle, Knoxville’s last Civil War veteran; a Tennessee muzzle-loading percussion rifle; a “Pots of Flowers” quilt attributed to Mary Jane Spangler Green that is said to have been hidden under her dress in Civil War raids to prevent being taken by Union soldiers; a wood-fired face jug by local potter Peter Rose; an 1825-1850 pie safe from the border of Greene and Hawkins Counties; a 1902 oak basket from the Riverdale Community of East Knoxville; a 1930s roadside sign for Indian Cave, the Grainger County tourist attraction; and paintings by Charles Krutch, Jim Gray, and Lucile Smith. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through June 9th. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is FREE to all, and ETHS members always receive FREE admission. The museum is located in the East Tennessee History Center, 601 South Gay Street in Knoxville. The Knoxville Choral Society Closes 2018-2019 Season with Sing! Knoxville Concert

T

HE KNOXVILLE CHORAL

Society has for many years established itself as the premier ensemble for choral masterworks and classical choral music in East Tennessee. The Sing! Knoxville concert is an opportunity for us to show our audiences the versatility of the choral art in today’s performing arts scene. Choral music today spans far more than the masterworks and church music we regularly perform. We’ll be looking at new, atmospheric music by modern, living composers, artful arrangements by popular artists such as Ed Sheeran and John Legend, world music styles incorporating Spanish and Arabic languages, as well as new arrangements of well known spirituals. The audience will be invited to sing with the Knoxville Choral Society as well. We’re going to be singing about singing and why singing is such an important part of our culture and how we connect with each other through music and togetherness. Come sing with the Knoxville Choral Society under the direction of conductor and artistic director, John R. Orr. The Sing! Knoxville concert takes place on Sunday, May 19, at 7:30 pm at the historic Bijou

Theatre, located at 803 S Gay Street. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from a choral society member, by visiting the Bijou Theatre website (www.knoxbijou.org), or by calling 865-684-1200, option 2. About Knoxville Choral Society The Knoxville Choral Society is an auditioned choir that has been bringing the joy and wonder of choral music to East Tennessee since 1951. They are dedicated to maintaining a rich tradition of choral excellence for both their members and audiences. For more information, visit www.knoxvillechoralsociety.org.

The play is being performed through May 12: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. Little Women is one of the most widely read novels of all time and named one of the “Top 100 Books for Children” by the National Education Association. As another Christmas arrives with Mr. March still off at the war front, Mrs. March’s daughters are growing up to be strikingly different from each other. Jo is willful, impulsive, and temperamental, whereas Beth is humble and selfless. Meg does not see a future outside her hometown, whereas Amy dreams of Europe. Jo and Laurence are inseparable in their youth, but which of the “Little Women” will he marry? And if “Laurie” is too conventional for Jo, what kind of man will she ever end up with? Ripe with life lessons about the change from child into young adult, Little Women is a timeless American classic. 26

The play is performed by 14 talented young actors from ages 12 to 17. The March sisters are portrayed by four veteran KCT performers: Brycen Ritchie plays Jo, Emma Stark plays Amy, and Beth is played by Maddy Grace Payne. Campbell Ella plays the oldest March sister Meg, while the sisters’ mother, Mrs. March, also known as Marme, is played by Kennis Van Dyke. The girls’ friend Laurence is played by Dale Gross. The rest of the cast features Nico Ellerbush, Starr Harrell, Logan Langley, Emmalea Merrell, Bella Patterson, Levi Vinsant, Alyssa Vogt, and Derrick Washington, Jr. The play is directed by KCT student intern, Charlotte Stark. The production team includes three students from the L&N STEM Academy: Quintin Rhodes, a junior, is the production’s lighting designer, and seniors Kennis Van Dyke and Derrick Washington, Jr. designed and built the costumes. Corbin Fram, an 8th grader at Gresham Middle School, provides the scenic design. The play’s stage manager is West Valley 8th grade student, Ava Bradshaw.

Matt was referring to Jim Caughorn, owner of Knoxville-based Graphic Creations, and his talented team of marketing and graphics professionals. “Brown Bag is pretty good at the few things we focus on, but when it comes to design and printing of marketing materials, we need help; Graphic Creations is the perfect fit for us.” Brown Bag, which launched its first restaurant in Knoxville in 2009, now has five locations in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Texas. Brown Bag’s objective was to create delicious, healthy, and affordable catered options as an alternative to the often greasy and heavy take-out food offered by many restaurants. “We think we have built a menu that you can eat five days a week and feel like you’ve done something good for your body,” said Matt. “When we started to think about our

JIMMIE RAY VAUGHAN B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

B

LUES AFICIONADOS are quite aware of guitar great Jimmie Ray Vaughan. He rose to fame as the axe handler for the Fabulous Thunderbirds and their smash hit, Tuff Enuff. This allowed him to work with such greats as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana, among many others. Since the T-birds disbanded, Jimmie has enjoyed a successful solo career, as well as teaming with others for fun side projects with such artists as Tanya Tucker and Dennis Quaid. He’s played in every one of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festivals and will again later this year. It was because of the release of his seventh solo album, “Baby, Please Come Home,” that I was afforded the opportunity to fulfill one of my journalistic goals: Interviewing the blues great. Regarding the story behind “Baby, Please Come Home,” Jimmie said: “It was just a lot of songs that I love. I went and recorded them down in San Marcos, Texas. It’s my band. We went and recorded what we wanted to, and there it is! It sounds more simple than it is, I guess. It’s the real deal for us.” When I asked Jimmie how this LP is different for him than all of the other albums – solo or otherwise – in recording, approach, and related areas, he shared: “Well, I didn’t change my approach. I mean, basically, what I do is record live in the studio. I’ll get together with my band, and we rehearse and just play the songs. Then we just go into the studio and record them. If we need to overdub something, we do. But basically, it’s live.” Artists will often point to a particular song on their disc as a calling card for the entire album, but Jimmie actually seemed a tad stumped. “Gosh! Listen, I like everything on it. I’ve got Lefty Frizzell, Jimmy Donley. Songs by Lloyd Price, Bill Doggett, Earl Garner. Did I say T. Bone Walker? It’s really all over the

28

place. When I first started playing, the first record that I bought was by a band called the Nightcaps. You know them. They were into the same thing. They even did some of the same songs. That’s really what I’m into. If you come see me, you’re gonna get all that, and I play stuff from my career over the years. But basically, I’m playing what I love.” I commented that the album is a “feel good” album that makes you involuntarily lift up your head and shoulders while tapping your feet. “I agree with you!” he said. “That’s really why we did it. It might be kinda hard to explain because it’s just what we do. It’s real, and we’re not trying to put on any airs. This is us.” I know that fans would want to hear an answer to this, so I had to ask: Will there ever be any sort of reunion with the Thunderbirds, and is Jimmie Ray ever going to do any more recording with Dennis Quaid again?

“Well, actually, I just did a song with Dennis Quaid and Tanya Tucker,” he said. “They came to town – they came to Austin and called me and said, ‘Hey, come over here and we’re gonna record. Come over and play guitar on a song.’ I just did it! There’s the answer to that one. “I would love for the Thunderbirds to get back together! Of course a couple of the guys have died. We had a lot of drummers and bass players. So maybe we could talk Mike Buck into it and get us another bass player. I’d love to play with Kim Wilson. I’m playing anyway and very proud and happy about what we did, Kim and I, back in the day. That would be fun!” Wrapping up our chat, I asked Jimmie how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy will be. “Oh, gosh! I don’t know that I want to come up with that answer,” he said. “I just want everybody to say what they want to say. I just have a lot of fun. I always have fun out here on the road with my buddies and me. We drive around and play guitars and play music, laugh and joke. This is the best job in the entire world! There couldn’t be a better job than this! You get to express yourself every night! Hang out with your friends. Sounds like a Willie Nelson song, doesn’t it? Ha! Ha! I can’t imagine that there would be a better job than this.” If you want to read more about what Jimmie Ray Vaughan shared – especially about the untimely passing of his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan – visit www.boomerocity. com. He had a lot more to say. To keep up with all things JRV, visit his website, www. JimmieVaughan.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

This Memorial Day Let’s Not Forget the Caregivers of our Military Veterans Past and Present Addressing the needs of caregivers helping our military, veteran heroes

“Y

OU’RE SITTING at home one night and get a phone call that your husband is being medevaced and he’s coming home. They said it was for spinal injuries,” said Mandy Spooneybarger, 36, caregiver to her husband, Charles, an Army veteran. “You have to live in your new normal. It’s stressful. It’s isolating. You have to let go of what you had. That is the hardest part. Sometimes it takes years. You can find strength from the person you are caring for. If you can, find other support.” One place to find that support has been the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. The organization recently received a grant from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes Campaign for innovative and evidencebased programs that address the long-term needs of military caregivers, spouses, parents, and loved ones caring for servicemembers and veterans at home. Veterans depend on caregivers “The ALA recognizes that many veterans depend daily on their dedicated caregivers,” said Kathy Dungan, national president of the organization. “We recognize how important it is to support caregivers and address the unique stresses they face to help ensure our nation’s heroes are supported for years to come.” 30

A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

At the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF) last fall, the grant helped the Auxiliary provide several opportunities to empower caregivers and provide social support. Respite bags were handed out to each caregiver at registration. Although the event is centered around veterans, the bags and warm welcomes from Auxiliary volunteers and staff made the caregivers feel special. Programs relevant to the needs of military caregivers are typically focused on the servicemember or veteran and only incidentally related to the caregiver’s role. There are gaps in needed programs, which the grant helped to address. In addition, the funding provided the opportunity to build skills and confidence as caregivers. Caregivers need support, too Dolores Kostiw, 71, caregiver to her husband, Steve, an Air Force veteran, said, “I retired two years ago. I’m around to help do what he needs to do, make sure he gets in and out of the shower OK. If he needs help with his shoes or dressing of any sort, I can try and help him with that. It’s very hard because he’s first – I have to make sure he’s OK and everything before I can take care of myself.” According to a Rand Corp. study, there are more than 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers in the U.S. They spend many hours tending to the visible and invisible injuries or illnesses of their loved ones. In the study, 17%

of civilian caregivers reported spending more than 40 hours per week providing care; 12% of post-9/11 military caregivers and 10% of pre-9/11 military caregivers spent more than 40 hours per week. It’s OK not to be OK and ask for help “Anger is a big thing,” said Spooneybarger. “Address that as soon as you can, because that’s the biggest reason I see why people leave their spouses – unresolved anger. They take it out on the only safe place they know – the person holding their hand through the whole process.” For Kostiw, it’s about finding time for herself. “More than once you think, I can’t do this anymore, I want to get out of it, but then he needs something, and I have to be there for him to give it to him,” she said. “Do what you can and if you can’t do it, ask for help.” Through the educational program and social support opportunities that were offered at the NVCAF, Kostiw and others learned it was OK to not be OK and to ask for help as a caregiver. They had the opportunity to show their emotions in a welcoming environment with others in similar situations. Some also offered suggestions on how to cope based on their own experiences. To learn more about how to get involved in the ongoing work of supporting caregivers and to give back to veterans, the military, and their families, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org.

Off-Broadway Hit Show, Not That Jewish, Comes to Knoxville! N OT THAT JEWISH, a critically

acclaimed, Off-Broadway hit comedy, will come to Knoxville during Memorial Day Weekend. This one-woman play is written and performed by Emmy Award Winning writer, comedian, and actress Monica Piper. It’s a provocative, entertaining, and poignant exploration of faith, family, and the values that inform our lives. Critics have praised the show as “a gem” (New York Times) and “a wonderful evening of entertainment” (Broadway World). Often compared to Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays and Amazon Prime’s hottest comedy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Not That Jewish is a story about everyday events written through the lens of a Jewish Heart. Attendees don’t need to be Jewish (or religious at all) to appreciate and enjoy the show – they need only to be human. Monsignor Jim Lisante, host of “Personally Speaking” on Sirius XM Radio, said, “Monica Piper – a great writer, comedienne, and actress – has put together a work of art about life, family, and values. One of the most moving things I’ve ever seen. It made me

laugh. It made me cry.” Written with the same humor and wit that won Piper an Emmy for Rugrats, an American Comedy Award Nomination for Top Female Comedian, and her own Showtime Special, Monica takes us on a hilarious journey from her childhood in the Bronx all the way to Broadway. Her questioning of what it means to “be Jewish” leads her on a journey of exploration that concludes with an understanding of what it means to have “a Jewish Heart” – one of humor, compassion, acceptance, and good deeds. In fact, a Jewish Heart is a human heart; something that can be shared universally and appreciated by those across all faiths and backgrounds. The audience falls in love with her whole family, but especially her

father – who began his career as a comedian and provides some of the funniest, most poignant moments of the play. The Bijou Theatre will host three performances during Memorial Day Weekend: Friday, May 24, at 7 pm, Saturday, May 25, at 2 pm, and Sunday, May 26, at 7 pm. Summer Is Upon Us! BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM

J

UST TYPING those words sends a

shiver of anticipation through my soul. For us, warmer weather means barbecues and weekend get-togethers with friends. But, before I feel comfortable inviting everyone over, my home needs some TLC. Perhaps your does, too. At the top of my list are reorganizing, lawn maintenance, and a good deep cleaning of all my hard surfaces, including floors, counters, walkways, and decks. Enter the honey-do-list. Lucky for me, there is one chore on that list that John doesn’t mind tackling in our home. Guess which one! Ten years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried almost every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never looked the way he wanted them to look. The LAST thing he wanted to do when he got home was to help me scrub the kitchen floor. So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband fell in love with the equipment and the process immediately.

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

He couldn’t wait to bring the equipment to Knoxville and tackle as many restaurant floors as he could manage. That first week we practiced using the equipment in our own home, and I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they were equally impressed! Here’s some of what I have learned during the past 10 years. Every now and then, every home needs a deep cleaning – a time to clean places that aren’t part of a regular cleaning schedule or places that are generally overlooked. I’ve also learned that no matter

countertops

how often a home is cleaned and the floors scrubbed, that dirt and contaminants build up over time, which cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. This dirt becomes trapped within the pores of the floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures and professional help. Surface Doc has the equipment that allows them to do what homeowners simply cannot do on their own. With a combination of high heat, high pressure, and a powerful spinning brush, all contained under a pressure hood, floors have no choice but to release all soil and contaminants buried deep within them. This process allows for the complete removal of years of build-up within your floor. If it’s time for your floors to look new again, please give John a call at 865-567-1986. You can expect fast, courteous, reliable service the first time. The quote and in-home demonstration are always free. Innovative Solutions for Your Kitchen Challenges

Y O U ’ R E L I K E most people, you have a particular challenge in your kitchen related to storage, organization, or access. These challenges in your home can be extremely frustrating. Luckily, ShelfGenie has some organizational tips and solutions to help transform these frustrations into joy. Issue #1 – Deep or narrow pantry shelves: D e ep or n a r r ow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like categories and keeping your most frequently used items up front, it’ll be easy to make the most of your pantry. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier Issue #2 – High overhead cabinets: If you have a high cabinet that you can’t access easily, consider putting in vertical

dividers for flat items such as baking sheets and trays. When these items are stored vertically, there’s no need to grab the entire stack to sort through items until you find what you need and you only need to be able to reach the bottom of the item, which makes access much easier. Issue #3 – Blind corner cabinet: Some homeowners struggle with a blind corner cabinet, which is a cabinet that extends back to a corner and makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50% and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility. Issue #4 – Tricky space under the sink: The area under the sink often accumulates items over the years that you no longer need. It’s a good idea to go through this space and throw out items in order to free up space and gain organization. Once this is done, consider a ShelfGenie under sink Glide Out, which has a pull-out shelf for trash bags, dishwashing detergent, and other cleaning supplies, plus an attached riser that keeps sponges or brushes close at hand. It is custom designed to avoid pipes, hoses, and the garbage disposal so it

maximizes your usable space. Issue #5 – Hard-to-reach spaces: For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab pots and pans in lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval. Issue #6 – In-the-way trashcans: Having a trashcan in the middle of your kitchen takes up space and it can be unsightly. You can keep it out of sight – but always within reach – with a Glide Out trash/recycling unit installed in a lower cabinet. The unit pulls out for easy access and can be attached to the cabinet door for an elegant, functional solution. Most lower cabinets are deep enough that you can add a second can for recycling. To bring these solutions to your home and begin turning your frustration into joy, schedule a complimentary in-home consultation with a ShelfGenie designer today.

Garage Renovation: Starting from the Floor Up

M

OST OF US grew up with a totally utilitarian garage with a coated floor – coated with oil and dirt. But today’s garages have become an extension of a home’s living space, and that means creating a clean space with flooring that’s durable and easy to clean. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oilstained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a highquality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. “There have been many improvements in coating technology over the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” said Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last.” The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind each floor to the

PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Having a PremierGarage floor installed will also: » Increase the resale value of your home. » Improve safety with a floor that is slip, impact, and heat resistant and brightens the area with increased light reflectivity. » Open up new activities in your garage. N GREEK mythology, Iris was the goddess of the rainbow; she was a messenger who brought an arc of color to the sky. In our gardens, the blooms of the iris bring a rainbow of color to our landscape. It doesn’t matter if you live on a country road or on a downtown street; iris are plants that catch your eye when in bloom. For most of Tennessee and the Mid-South, this begins in April and persists through May with other iris blooming later in the season. By midApril, the largest flush of bearded iris flowers are taking center stage in most gardens. There are 200-plus species of iris, including some North American natives. Species are separated into two main groups: Rhizomatous and bulbous. Bulbous irises form a more typical bulb and include Persian, reticulate, and many dwarf irises. Rhizomes are underground stems that grow horizontally and are used as storage for the plant. Bearded iris falls into this group, as do both the Japanese and Siberian iris. The Iris, genus Iridaceae, is the official state cultivated flower of Tennessee. While iris come in several different colors, the act naming the iris as the state flower did not name a particular color. However, by

common acceptance, the purple iris is considered the state cultivated flower. If you love and enjoy iris, you may consider having a secession of iris bloom in your garden comprised of several different species. This could begin with Iris reticulata a small bulbus iris, followed by a dwarf bearded iris like ‘little sighs.’ Next, add classic tall bearded iris to your garden. There are many to choose from; ‘Team Player’ and ‘Gypsy Lord’ are two

of my favorites. Follow this up with a Siberian iris like ‘Caesar’s Brother’ and Iris tectorum, the Japanese roof iris. If you like iris, why not get involved with one of the many iris societies we have right here in Tennessee, including the East Tennessee Iris Society in Knoxville? These can be great ways to meet new gardening friends, share knowledge, and gain insight into gardening in your specific region of the state. There are iris societies in neighboring states as well. To get more information, simply search the internet for any of these iris gardening groups or visit the website of the American Iris Society at www.irises.org. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www. ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

May in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

A BEAUTIFUL WHAT SPRING!

I really cannot remember a spring that has been any prettier. It seems like every morning when I am walking the dogs there is something new in bloom or leafing out. Maybe Mother Nature is trying to make up for all that grey, rainy nastiness earlier in the year! May is one of a gardener’s busiest months, so let’s get started on your to-do list: » Do your walk-about and see what is going on. Remember to look up, down, and all around! Look up to check for signs of disease or damage to larger shrubs and trees. Look down to check for moles/ voles. Look all around for signs of disease and insect damage in your smaller shrubs and perennials. What needs to be moved, divided, treated, or fertilized? Make notes about what you need to do. » If you are planting larger trees and shrubs this year, try to get them in by the end of the month. It is easier for the plants to establish root systems before they have to start battling the heat. Don’t panic if you don’t get everything planted, however. You

can still plant in June, but you will have to pay more attention to watering and nurturing. » Get those container gardens started while plants are small, but leave room for them to grow. Use a good quality potting soil and pick plants that like the same conditions. Also, remember that any planter that is outside in the elements should have a drain hole or it will become a water garden! Stop by if you need help making your selections. » Speaking of water, let’s talk a bit about that. Water issues are the number one plant killer. I am often told “we have a sprinkler system” when I ask about watering. Sprinkler systems are great for grass and flowers, but they are often woefully inadequate for trees and shrubs. You need to get 1” of water to the roots of larger plants every week, and most of you have no idea how much water your system puts out. A very easy way to tell is to put a tuna or cat food can under a section of your sprinkler and see how much water actually goes into it. It is also important to water deeper and less frequently. This

encourages plants to develop deep roots instead of shallow roots. » Did you mulch? If not, think about applying a fresh layer or top-dressing. At least go out and take a rake to old mulch to “fluff ” it, because it becomes very compacted over the winter. Mulch adds a neat look and keeps soil temperature and moisture levels stable. It also breaks down and adds nutrients to the soil. Please use hardwood or pine mulch! Cypress harvesting is decimating the forests, and I don’t recommend rubber. » You can prune spring bloomers once the blooms have faded. Forsythia and quince can be pruned somewhat severely. Be more selective with azaleas, rhododendrons, and lilacs. Call us if you have questions. I have seen some truly tragic pruning done, so please do a little research before you start whacking. » As your spring bulbs die back, don’t get in too big a hurry to cut them down. Wait until the foliage has died back, because it is storing the energy for next year’s blooms. If you cut them down too soon, it will have a negative impact on flower quantity. » Some of your perennials may need a little assistance as they emerge. Tall plants may need to be staked or caged, and it is easier to do that while the plants are small. You can also pinch plants back to encourage them to be shorter and bushier. » You will get a much longer bloom season if you deadhead on a regular basis. (Deadheading is cutting the spent blooms off, by the way.) You should do this to perennials AND annuals to keep those blooms coming! You can use your fingernails or scissors to remove them. Take the stalk down to the next leaf cluster to avoid having those ugly sticks poking up out of the plant. » We have lots of bugs already, but I encourage you to avoid using insecticides as much as possible. Always start with the least toxic product first, and spray when bees are not active. If you have a shrub that only blooms in the spring, wait until after it finishes before you apply insecticides. » My last pitch is for the birds. Keep those feeders and baths full and clean! Birds will remove lots of those pesky insects, so attract them to your yard with plants, houses, feeders, and water sources. We are getting several trucks in every week, so stop by often to see what is new. Happy gardening!

Mosquitoes Beware! Dayton’s Has Arrived!

“I

No Mosquitoes, Carpenter Bees, Ants, or Other Warm Weather Pests We called Dayton’s!

Mosquito Control Management

’VE USED Dayton’s Mosquito Control

Management since the first year it was offered, and I would NEVER consider not using it,” said a longtime client of Dayton’s. “I love being outdoors tending my flower garden and knowing that I won’t be bitten by those irritating pests! The monthly cost is affordable, plus it doesn’t matter if my neighbors use mosquito control or not; my yard is protected. I like the fact that this treatment is environmentally friendly and won’t hurt my dog or plants.” Besides being nuisance pests, mosquitoes can be serious public health threats by transmitting life-threatening diseases such as West Nile virus or the Zika virus, so it’s important to take precautions to prevent being bitten. Offered May through October, this program eliminates mosquitoes by stopping their seven-day breeding lifecycle from eggs to biting adults, treating mosquito breeding sites such as standing water, waterscapes, and mosquito resting areas like landscaping, vegetation, trees, and shrubs. Dayton’s is also your best resource for eliminating other warm weather pests such as carpenter bees, ants, and wasps. Professional treatment of the source of these pests, such as nesting places underground or inside wooden eaves, is the key to keep them from coming back! New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a contract through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather pests with an annual pest agreement. Other services include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, pest control for ladybugs/ bedbugs, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing / mitigation.

Step up Your Shoe Storage

H

E A L S , F L A T S , wedges, strappy, platform, sandals, boots... yes, ladies, we have a wide variety of shoe styles because there are so many different occasions that require different kinds of footwear, clothing, and accessories. Unfortunately, without dedicated storage in a closet, shoes are usually piled on the floor where they get kicked around, stepped on, and need replacing more often. Properly storing shoes in your closet will help display your favorite footwear while saving space, time, and money. No matter what the size of your closet, these options will help you step up your shoe storage. Shoe Shelves Using dedicated solid shelves keep shoes in top form and are easily seen when organized by type and color. To maximize space, place one shoe forward and the other backwards, which allows four pairs of women’s shoes on a 24” long shelf. This placement will also let you see the shoe and heal height at a glace. To better protect shoes, they can be placed in their original boxes or see-through plastic keepers. The same 24” shelf will only fit three shoe or plastic boxes side-by-side, but they can be stacked two or three high. Slanted Shelves with Shoe Fence Slanted shelves with a low decorative rail

Storing them in a pretty basket and clipping pairs together will save valuable space on your shoe shelves. The basket can fit on the floor or the top shelf of your closet. Shoe Cubbies Each side-by-side mini bin houses one pair of shoes. This makes for easy storage and minimizes dust. However, individual cubbies take up more closet space than dedicated shelving. If you have a small closet, opt for shelving. From high-heel shoes to your shirts, Tailored Living will design and install a custom closet that meets your individual needs… even on a shoestring budget!

and Mabry-Hazen House are excited to present one of Shakespeare’s most beloved tragedies, Romeo and Juliet. With the historic front porch of MabryHazen House as the stage, Shakespeare on the Hill will recount the tale of two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. For centuries, Romeo and Juliet has been the love story by which all other are measured, and the first Shakespeare on the Hill puts a historic spin on this classic tragedy. Set against the backdrop of Mabry-Hazen House, the well-known tragedy of Romeo and Juliet plays out in a new setting. Built in 1858 and seated atop Mabry’s hill, the historic house will act as a unique backdrop to this antebellum-era production. While the Bard’s tragic tale remains unaltered, the players will wear historic garments from the mid-19th century. Three shows will occur: Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, May 12, at 2:30 pm. Doors open 30 minutes before curtain. Tickets are $15, and

Built in 1858, three generations of the same family resided in the Italianate-style

The museum showcases one of the largest original family collection in America with more than 2,000 original artifacts on display. Furnished and decorated in the style of several decades, Mabry-Hazen gives a rare view into 130 years of Knoxville history.

and keep out insects. As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more family time on our patios and porches. Yet with warm weather comes bugs, making it difficult to remain outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens on your home allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a retractable screen solution that fits your needs. 2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you to enjoy unimpaired views when the screens are retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about annoying insects when screens are in place. Large, motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort. They can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish your views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. 3. Preserve the look and design of your doorway. Homeowners are abandoning the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. Retractable door screens provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly appearance of conventional door screens, making it a perfect addition for any home. 4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens are the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s fully retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or fully retract the screens to gain the maximum warming effects of the sun in the cooler months. 5. Enjoy the convenience of professional design and installation. Homeowners often struggle to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of the openings they want to screen. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if you’re considering recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs. To discover all the possibilities retractable screens can offer you and your family, contact me today.

NILS LOFGREN

T

O THE CASUAL rock music listener, the name Nils Lofgren may not ring a bell. However, you can be assured that you’ve heard him if not as a solo artist, you most definitely have as guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, or time in Neil Young’s Crazy Horse (“then” – in the seventies – and now), in Ringo’s All Starr Band, or as the front man for one of his bands, Grin. So yeah, you’ve heard at least some of Nils’ work. It is because of the release of his latest album, Blue with Lou (featuring several songs he co-wrote with the late Lou Reed), that I reached out for my third interview with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee by phone at his home in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. I hadn’t spoken with him since I interviewed him about his Face the Music release almost five years ago. After some small talk, Nils cut to the chase to tell me about Blue with Lou. “I’m excited to have a band of a great group of friends that made a record,” he said. “My dear brother, Tommy, who I don’t get to play with enough. It’s going to be exciting to get some new music out. Six songs co-written with Lou Reed is something; I knew those songs had to be shared on this record, too. Just a lot of elements that I set out to try to accomplish. Very important were the Lou songs and being able to play and sing everything live and really know the songs well; not having to write a line or two and then a bridge. ‘I’ll figure out the melody there later. I like the chords.’ I’ve done all of that. Now, especially as I get older, I know I’m much better off creating something as live as possible. With good friends and great players, I was able to accomplish that, thankfully. “I was coming up with some ideas. Years 50

ago Lou and I wrote 13 songs together. Eight of them have been released; three by him. I put out three, originally, and a couple after that. And I always thought – regarding the ones left behind – Lou might call and say, ‘Hey, let’s take a look at those.’ And then, of course, tragically we lost Lou Reed, who was an incredible rock and roller, lyricist, poet, artist. I knew at that point – in the back of my mind – that the next record that I made, it would really be appropriate to get the notebooks out and get those songs in shape to record. That was part of it, too. “When we wrapped up the E Street Band tour in Australia – the River tour – our last legs were called the River. We did six weeks in Australia and New Zealand. And during that, I started writing in earnest and just kinda gathering my thoughts; working on the Lou songs; kind of refined them and arranged them. So there was that excitement. ‘Okay, now it’s time to make a record.’ “I’ve got the five Lou songs that nobody ever heard, and I wanted to re-do ‘City Lights’. That was a song that – when I sent Lou this

cassette tape of 13 songs – was one that he said, ‘Look, I love your chorus. I’m going to keep it and write a song about Charlie Chaplin. It’s a beautiful chorus.’” Nils points to two songs as the album’s calling cards. “I’m very mostly proud and attached to all these songs,” he said. “Just because of the nature of the lyric, there’s a song called ‘Give’ that I think is kind of representative of the record in the sense that it’s a classic lyric by Lou. Give everything you got. There’s a six or seven minute jam that we kept on the record live as it went down. It reminded me of the old days of Cream and the Hendrix Experience, where there were power trios and long jams, which people don’t put on records anymore.” Nils shared so much during our chat, and virtually all of it can be read on www. boomerocity.com. But in wrapping up our chat, I asked Nils how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. He said, in part: “Randy, I’m not ready to write my epitaph. I can’t go there. Ha! Ha! I hope I got a good piece of time left. I’ll be a bit more excited about what I’ve accomplished in the next 10 years than the past 67 years or whatever. But anyway, that’s the best I can give you right now.” Nils will be performing songs from Blue with Lou in Nashville and Atlanta this month. Visit www.NilsLofgren.com or www. boomerocity.com for details. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music. Photos by by Carl Shultz

New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on May 3

T

HE ARTS & Culture Alliance is

pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from May 3-31. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Grace and Grandeur by Sam Stapleton and John Vavruska in the Balcony Gallery Tw o p h o t o g r a phers born in 1951, Sam Stapleton and J o h n Va v r u s k a , grew up in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains: Sam on the western side in the town of Kingsport, TN, and John on the eastern slopes in Waynesville, NC. Sam Stapleton Both were heavily influenced by the culture and natural beauty of the southern Appalachians, both subsequently obtained professional degrees from John Vavruska the University of Tennessee (Sam in accounting and John in engineering), and both began their serious pursuit of photography in the early 1970s. When they met in 1976, it was their shared love of photography that provided the foundation for their friendship, and for two years, they shared a house and a darkroom they built themselves. Time separated them: Vavruska was drawn to the American west in the early 1980s, served in the Peace Corps in Nepal, and then settled in Santa Fe, where he now resides with his wife of 30+ years; Stapleton remained close to his roots in Knoxville, where he too resides with his wife of 30+ years. Yet with all of their similarities, the two have drifted apart in their photographic vision and now occupy virtual opposite ends of the photographic spectrum. Vavruska has remained primarily in the analog (film) world and has grown in the direction of large (4x5”) format black and white photography, capturing the grandeur of the natural landscape through hand-crafted gelatin silver prints. Conversely, Stapleton remained with small (35mm) format photography but converted whole-heartedly to digital technology, where he continues to focus on the intimate color imagery of the East Tennessee landscape. While one’s images convey a high level of detail and tonal gradation, another’s use the spontaneity of the smaller format to explore the abstract and impressionistic capabilities of the medium. This exhibit is to share their

story – the story of two men with a common photographic grounding that has matured into expressions of widely divergent visions.

BJ Adams Pairs: Work by the New Image Artists in the Main Gallery This fiber and mixed media exhibition, curated by Trudi Van Dyke, features 13 contemporary fiber artists who are juried members of the New Image Artists group. Members are active studio artists who work primarily with cloth, paper, and alternative materials. The concept of “pairs” challenged the artists to consider their work as it developed in theme or concept and how one piece could influence the artist to create a companion piece. Unlike a diptych, each new work stands alone, and yet its voice is more fully developed when viewed as a pair that evolved from the subject, materials, or some other element of the initial work. When conceiving work for Pairs, the artists experimented with relationships between subject, media, and techniques. The artists began in a creative dimension without boundaries and chose a concept or subject without limits. The first work was planned and sometimes completed when the artist found a way to morph the idea, media, or subject into a complementary piece. The resulting pair effectively enables viewers a more in-depth appreciation than a solitary work. Knoxville: Special Light by Allen Monsarrat in the Display Case A l l e n Monsarrat’s first art career was as a studio potter in Friendsville, TN, for 25 years, fol l owe d by a career in decorative wall finishes, faux painting, Allen Monsarrat cabinetry finishing, and the occasional mural project. Never one to sit still, he turned to fine art painting, which has developed into a concentration on representational work, including photorealism (paintings intended to look like photographs). Monsarrat’s source material comes from photographs he has taken, which allows him to carefully design a composition and have plenty of information to include as

much detail as he chooses. As his reference source, a photograph allows him to study the nuances of color, light, and reflection and how they change across a seemingly uniformly colored surface. Monsarrat uses translucent layers of paint to build depth unachievable with ink on paper. He began working in pastels in 2018, and for this exhibition, he will display oil paintings and pastels that depict iconic Knoxville scenes. Anna Halliwell Boyd: Forget Me Not (Really) on the North Wall Anna Halliwell Boyd is a mixed media artist and arts educator from Oak Ridge. During her undergraduate Anna Halliwell Boyd years and first graduate program, she made watercolors, ceramic sculptures, oil paintings, and drawings that alluded to the bizarre, sad nature of witnessing the decay of her grandmother’s mind with Alzheimer’s. Her recent works use mixed media to convey themes of loss and how the past is recollected. The photographs she took growing up are often resurrected in her work to convey lost connections with others and the distorted nature of memory.

Rodney Yardley Rodney Yardley: Barns, Beer Joints, and Baptist Churches in the Atrium Rodney Yardley is a self-taught photographer and part-time flaneur from Knoxville. Much of his time is spent trying to capture the feeling of memories and dreams using tools from antique film cameras to modern digital cameras and cell phones. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 pm. Please note that the Emporium will be closed on Monday, May 27, for the holiday. For more information, contact the Arts & Culture Alliance at 865-523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com.

Amish Elegance Exceptional Quality – Reasonably Priced – Hand-crafted by the Amish

L

BY ANGIE CARROLL, OWNER OF AMISH ELEGANCE

ET ME BEGIN by thanking all of

you who participated in our April 29th Grand Re-opening celebrating the launch of Amish Elegance, formerly Amish Excellence. It was our pleasure to host local radio and TV personality, Hallerin Hilton Hill, during the live broadcast of his popular afternoon radio broadcast on Knoxville’s own Newstalk 98.7 WOKI. Also, we enjoyed having Dawn Steimer, Contractor with Master Remodelers and host of the popular radio broadcast Around the House with Dawn Steimer, broadcast from the showroom Saturday morning, March 30th. We particularly enjoyed the opportunity to share our Amish Elegance vision for the future with the WOKI radio listening audience and those in attendance. Amish Elegance’s origin first began with our 1,900 square foot showroom, which we opened on April 1, 2016. Not surprisingly, as our understanding and appreciation of the Amish furniture marketplace grew, and in response to the evolving needs of our rapidly growing customer base, we evolved as well. We expanded our existing retail showroom to 4,200 square feet, allowing us to display many new lines of Amish furnishings in furniture styles beyond the traditional Mission style of furniture most often associated with Amish furniture. A growing number of customers also began requesting upholstered furniture pieces,

so we began displaying an expanded selection of sofas, recliners, chairs, and headboards featuring both performance fabrics and highquality leather. In recognition of our efforts, we were recognized as the Number One Furniture Store in Farragut in 2017, Favorite Furniture Store in Knoxville in 2018, and Favorite Interior Design in Knoxville in 2018. But our efforts didn’t stop there, as we began offering our customers an extensive selection of outstanding designer-inspired home décor items, including lamps, mirrors, clocks, and more, as well as framed art from some of our most celebrated regional artists, to help you to create those showcase quality living spaces within your home. Although much has changed, one thing that has not changed is our commitment to providing you with the exceptional customer service, quality, and value you deserve, as we continue our tradition of offering you only

the finest, solid American hardwood, custom hand-crafted Amish furniture, art, and home décor items that you have been searching for. We invite you to discover the exciting world of quality, hand-crafted Amish furniture, home décor, and art at the all-new Amish Elegance. We also invite you to visit our new website featuring many of our product catalogs and photo galleries. Also, be sure to watch for the special events that we will be hosting throughout the year, where we will be introducing you to many of our very own Amish craftsmen and an expanded selection of new products.

“Suor Angelica” by Giacomo Puccini May 30-31 & June 1 • 7:30 PM St. John’s Cathedral

P ERFORMED WITH FULL

cast and orchestra in the courtyard of St. John’s Cathedral, the Marble City Opera presents the Puccini classic “Suor Angelica,” which follows the events of a single day in the lives of Sister Angelica and the other nuns in a convent. Their peaceful lives are interrupted one day when Angelica’s aunt, the Principessa, arrives with news of their family. Having been cloistered within the walls of the convent for several years, the information is completely new to Angelica and shakes her to the core. The tragic events that are set off eventually lead to her ultimate redemption, and the story masterfully told through Puccini’s score make this a can’t-miss staple of the operatic canon. The cast includes Kathryn Frady as Suor Angelica, Julie Belanger-Roy as The Principessa, and Jacquie Brecheen as Suor Genovieffa. Allan R. Scott is the conductor and James Marvel is stage director. Tickets cost $30 for adults and $15 for students. For more information, visit www.marblecityopera.com.

Knox Heritage Celebrates 45 Years

I

N 1974, the Bijou Theatre was threatened by demolition

and neglect. The historic venue that had once hosted the Marx Brothers, Dizzy Gillespie, and many other entertainers had fallen on hard times. The wrecking ball was poised to wipe out an important part of Knoxville’s history. But a group of concerned citizens was determined not to let that happen. They formed an organization called Knoxville Heritage, a name later changed to Knox Heritage. Incorporated on April Fools’ Day in 1974 and founded in the Dulin Art Gallery on Kingston Pike, Knox Heritage was thereafter dedicated to protecting and preserving structures and places in Knox County with historic or cultural significance. In the nick of time, the group raised the money to purchase the Bijou Theatre and save it for future generations to enjoy. Since its founding, Knox Heritage has aimed to educate everyone about the benefits of historic preservation. It has acquired blighted houses that once were the worst examples of neglect and restored them to attractive homes, improving historic neighborhoods. It has helped secure funding for development projects that contribute to the revitalization of downtown. It has called attention to some of Knox County’s most endangered cultural and historic assets, encouraging owners to preserve these unique places for the next generation. And it has helped build a broad network of those that value historic preservation throughout the community. Tireless dedication from countless volunteers serving on the board and committees, financial support from members, hardworking and

talented staff, and the growing awareness of the importance of historic preservation by the community all have enabled Knox Heritage to celebrate many success stories over the course of this history. Knox Heritage continues to grow and expand its influence in preservation. Today’s organization often works regionally, holds protective easements on several historic properties, manages the Salvage Shop on N. Broadway, and owns and operates historic properties such as the Airplane Filling Station on Clinton Highway and the Historic Westwood estate, which serves as its home office. Its annual fundraisers, such as the Summer Supper series, are hugely popular in the community. Learn more about Knox Heritage and supporting its mission through membership or sponsorship at www.knoxheritage.org.

Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

A “Nothing to Sneeze At” Level of Clean BY KERRY MCDUFFIE, OWNER OF SUPERIOR CARPET & RUG CLE ANING

W

I N T E R H A S P A S S E D , and

the dogwood blooms have finally blossomed, welcoming our much anticipated spring. For a few precious weeks, we can open up our windows to allow the mild spring breezes to refresh our homes. But all too quickly temperatures rise, windows close, and air conditioners are turned back on. One challenge many of us experience during those periods of time when our homes are “buttoned up” is that dust and allergens are trapped inside, and our home’s HVAC and ceiling fans only help to redistribute these contaminants throughout our entire house, as is evident by the dust on your furniture. No amount of dusting seems to alleviate the sneezing and coughing that many of our family members experience from these contaminants. While there is no way to totally eliminate annoying dust and allergens in your home, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce these airborne contaminants. One surefire way is to remove dust and allergens from your home’s carpeting and Oriental rugs. While vacuuming helps, your vacuum only removes a small portion of the accumulated contaminants that are trapped deep in the fibers of your home’s carpeting and rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we offer homeowners two proven solutions to dust and allergens in your home. For your home’s wallto-wall carpeting, we offer a deep cleaning and extraction process that thoroughly cleans your carpets using only specially treated water from our truck-mounted cleaning plant that assures a level of clean that leaves our competition in the dust. For your home’s Oriental rugs, we offer our proprietary 11-step rug washing process at our state-of-the-art rug washing boutique that achieves a level of clean that is simply not achievable using any other method. Call us today, and discover for yourself a Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning level of clean – a level of clean that is nothing to sneeze at, and a level of clean that we have been offering all of our customers since 1985.

Duluth offers great natural beauty and outdoor experiences. One of the best-known is the 43rd annual Grandma’s Marathon June 22, a 26.2-mile race along the scenic North Shore. Other races include the William A. Irvin 5K and the Whipper Snapper Races for kids 14 and under on June 21, then the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon on June 22.

For automobile enthusiasts, visit Spirit Valley Days July 30-31, hosting the Northland’s largest classic car show. Also included in the celebration is a canoe and kayak tour of the St. Louis River, the largest freshwater estuary in North America, and the headwaters of the Great Lakes. Plan your trip around the exciting Duluth Air Show July 20-21. Minnesota’s largest air show features the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Since Duluth is best known for its proximity to Lake Superior, there are two must-see events celebrating all things nautical: Cheer on the Duluth Rowing Club at the spectacular Duluth International Regatta, a 29-event rowing regatta held on a 2,000-meter course on July 13. But the most famous event this summer is the thrilling Festival of Sail August 11-13. When these sailing vessels visit Duluth, it is a rare chance to see the grandest ships of yore. Historic ships arrive in Duluth for a three-day visit, featuring tours and fun for the entire family! The World’s Largest Rubber Duck will visit the harbor, making an incredible photo backdrop for the ships. This event is extremely popular, so you will want to book your lodging now if you plan to stay in Duluth that week.

Fun, Music, and Food

Duluth provides an amazing array of musical talent year-round but especially during the summer months. Plan your visit around these exciting artists and festivals for a truly memorable vacation. National acts visiting Duluth’s Bayfront Festival Park this summer alone include Trampled by Turtles on July 6, Steve Miller Band on July 14, and O.A.R. on August 1. Concerts and festivals provide a great opportunity to enjoy Duluth. The annual Duluth Dylan Fest May 18-26 celebrates iconic artist Bob Dylan, who was born in Duluth in 1941. The week-long festival includes an art show, poetry reading, concerts, lectures by Dylanologists, and a Singer-Songwriter Contest. The Concert on the Pier at Glensheen is held July 18 at the historic 20,000-square-foot mansion. Concertgoers can bike, boat, or walk to the

Cultural Events

For film aficionados, the Duluth Superior Film Festival (DSFF) May 29-31 presents an imaginative, diverse lineup of international, independent, and regional films. DSFF hosts visiting filmmakers, plus events and parties. Catch the Art in Bayfront Park Art Fair August 17-18 for the opportunity to purchase gallery-quality artwork, including jewelry, paintings, photography, ceramics, and more from around 180 artists. You can even take an art class during a fun-filled weekend of art appreciation.

concert since parking is limited. The best seats in the house are on Lake Superior. Concertgoers can purchase a Glensheen tour on concert evenings. Check out the 14th annual Bayfront Reggae and World Music Festival July 20, showcasing international performers, plus ethnic foods and artisans. Or visit August 9-11 for

the 31st annual Bayfront Blues Festival, when 20,000 fans are treated to more than 30 acts at Bayfront Festival Park, highlighting the best artists in the blues and blues/ rock genres. If rock, country, and dance music are more your thing, see The Tribute Fest August 22-24, featuring many fun tribute shows. Enjoy the best tribute bands in the country while raising funds for homeless veterans.

For the tastiest food and drink in Duluth, visit the Taste of Duluth Festival July 14 or the All Pints North Summer Brew Fest July 27, both at Bayfront Festival Park. RIOR TO THE widespread use

of the internet and social media, the key to a successful sales career relied upon the ability of the salesperson to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship between the client, the client’s company, the salesperson, and the company he or she represented. This relationship often required years of effort but resulted in a level of confidence and trust in each party and their respective companies, which represented an enormous competitive advantage for the successful salesperson and an incredible uphill battle for their competition. A great deal has changed since then. Gone by the wayside are the two martini lunches, fishing trips, dinners with clients and their spouses, pagers, long lines at pay phones, cell phones the size of a shoebox, and company cars. Please understand that I’m not pining for the “good old days.” Personally, I enjoy the many technological advances that allow me to operate so much more efficiently than in the past. These same advances also help us respect our clients’ time. As a small business owner of nearly 35 years, I appreciate the fact that increased competition has required each of us

But you’ve got to become a “five percenter.” to do more with less, but it has unfortunately come at a very high price, as the personal relationships with our clients are oftentimes far less than they were previously. This reduction in face time with clients has fostered today’s commodity marketplace environment. Most clients I meet with are confused by the deluge of emails blasts, cell phone calls, and, in my industry, media consultants that drop in unannounced, each claiming their product or service is superior to that of their competition. Overwhelmed, clients often jump at the savings that they believe will result from a lower price, unaware that this low price typically comes at a cost that, more often than not, offsets any perceived savings. Not knowing who they can trust, prospective clients often turn a deaf ear to every salesperson, account executive, etc. that they encounter. With our continued dependence on technology and growing acceptance of commodity

marketplaces, an invisible, technological “firewall” exists that jeopardizes the very client relationships that once were the hallmark of success for both buyer and seller. Is there a solution? There always is. But you’ve got to become a “five percenter.” That’s the title I’ve assigned to that small group of salespeople who have successfully differentiated themselves, their company, and their products and services with their clients. They still embrace technology. They respect their clients and their own time, recognizing that we must all do more with less. Most importantly, they believe that success in selling occurs not when the sale is consummated, but rather when the client successfully utilizes the seller’s products or services. Five percenters do not hide behind technology’s firewall, which causes their products and services to become mere commodities with price their only weapon. Five percenters not only make more money than their peers, but they also enjoy a personal level of fulfillment and satisfaction, and the uncommon respect and trust of a large and loyal customer base that’s nearly impenetrable, that eludes the ninety-five percenters. It’s your call.

SCULPT YOUR BODY WITH SCULPSURE S

C U L P S U R E I S an FDAcleared laser treatment that destroys excess fat cells on the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, back rolls and bra fat, buttocks, and other areas. SculpSure is now cleared by the FDA to treat the double chin. The innovative technology behind SculpSure is based on heating targeted fat cells to the point of permanent destruction. Once the fat is destroyed, it is naturally eliminated from the body. During the ensuing 6 to 12 weeks, the treated areas will shrink to their new shape. For patients, this means a quick and simple end to stubborn fat. Why Choose SculpSure? » Compared to other treatments, it disperses the heat gradually throughout the layers of fat for more natural results, and there is not a risk of dimpling, sharp demarcations, or dents between what is treated and not treated. » Each SculpSure treatment lasts 25 minutes from start to finish. According to studies, one treatment is said to reduce fat cells by 24%. The short treatment time means that a patient could literally come

in for a treatment during their lunch hour and return to work without any disruption in their schedule. » SculpSure offers the advantage of being a relatively painless procedure. Most patients feel a tingling sensation intermittently throughout the treatment, which is generally well-tolerated. » Fat cells treated with the SculpSure laser are heated to 42 to 47 degrees Celsius or 107 to 116 degrees Fahrenheit – just a little warmer than a hot shower. These temperatures do not damage the skin and can be used on virtually any skin type. » While not FDA cleared as a skin tightening treatment, patients have noted improved skin texture and skin tightening as SculpSure uses heat, which is known to stimulate collagen. » SculpSure is highly customizable, and just about any area of the body can be treated. » Studies suggest that SculpSure has a 90% patient satisfaction rate, and its RealSelf.com “worth it” rating is 85% by patients.
