EK: What first inspired you to open Knox
Cabinet Co.? Megan: Launching Knox Cabinet Co. seemed liked a natural extension of our combined experiences and talents. Brian and I have been buying and remodeling existing homes for resale for many years. During this process, we learned the importance of creating dynamic kitchens and baths in the homes we sold. They became the centerpiece of each successful sale. Although we had a wonderful relationship with our cabinet vendor, we began to search for a new cabinet line that offered more options yet was still affordable. After discovering an exciting new cabinet
manufacturer, we completed our new showroom on Hardin Valley Road. We like to refer to our new showroom as a Discovery Center, where you can discover all of the possibilities that exist for creating showcase quality kitchens and baths in your homes. Another thing we think you will enjoy about doing business with Knox Cabinet Co. is the “family feel.” That’s because you will find both Brian’s mom and my mom, in addition to my not-so-little brother, Lane, at our showroom happy to assist you. A former Bearden High School baseball standout, Lane now plays with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. But I have drafted him during the off-season to put his real estate and teamwork expertise to work at Knox Cabinet Co. EK: Both you and Brian have decades of combined residential development, construction, remodeling, and property management experience. How has this helped you at Knox Cabinet Co.? Megan: Because we were the customers for so many years, we gained an appreciation for what homeowners shopping for kitchen and bath cabinetry wanted from their cabinet supplier. Our goal is to make your experience of shopping for quality and affordable cabinetry as easy and as seamless as possible, creating for our customers the showcase quality look they are searching for while remaining within their budget. EK: Tell our readers about the many features and benefits of Knox Cabinet Co.’s kitchen and bath cabinetry. Megan: All of our cabinets are built from solid wood construction without the particle board and MDF so often found today even in some brand name cabinets, and all drawers are dovetailed. Just a few of the available options include pull-out trash receptacles, microwave cabinets, spice rack pull-outs, and file drawers for starters. But I’m confident that your favorite option will be the multiple stain and paint options and door styles available for you to select from. These are truly high-end cabinets at a very affordable price. EK: It would appear that many of the standard features of your cabinets are optional with other cabinet manufactures. Megan: At our price point, you would be correct. Homeowners will find that other comparably priced cabinets do not include the soft-close doors and soft-close dovetailed drawers that we offer as standard features. They will also find that they have far fewer options to select from. All of these added features can transform an ordinary kitchen and bath into an extraordinary kitchen and bath. EK: Many homeowners will be surprised by both the quality of your cabinets and their competitive pricing. How is that possible? want in order to create that quality, custom kitchen and bath look. We then developed a proprietary business model with low overhead, custom design capabilities, and intelligent logistics in order to offer this unique value to all our customers. EK: Share with our readers your turn-key approach, including sales, design, and preferred vendor installation. Megan: I believe this is truly another area that distinguishes Knox Cabinet Co. from its competitors. We already understood the retail cabinetry marketplace from the perspective of the customer. We simply set out to redesign the experience to make it easier and more enjoyable for our customers to achieve their dream of creating the look that they envisioned. Next we designed a showroom featuring multiple designer created vignettes to help inspire you to discover that showcase quality kitchen and bathroom that are waiting to be discovered in your home. With the assistance of one of our designers, we will guide you through every step of the design process, answer all of your questions, offer recommendations, and even offer CAD drawings using our 2020 design software, which can display your proposed layout design on our 65” flat screen monitor in our dedicated conference room. We have even compiled a preferred vendor list of state certified contractors for your convenience who can assist you in installation of your home’s new cabinets. As I mentioned before, our goal has been to make things as easy and seamless as possible for our customers. We are in the showroom Monday through Saturday and can help with really anything the customer needs – whether it’s providing an opinion on selections, laying out the customer’s kitchen on 2020 design software, or aligning them with our preferred installers. EK: Do you also offer a preferred vendor for cabinet countertops? Megan: Because new cabinets typically require new countertops, each of our vignettes feature a variety of solid surface countertops on all our cabinets designed to inspire you. We also have samples displayed throughout our design showroom for your
convenience. Should you discover a surface that you love, we can provide pricing and arrange to have our preferred fabricator/ installer come to your home to measure, fabricate, and install your countertops once your new cabinets are installed. EK: You offer showroom design services. Do you offer in-home design services as well? Megan: In the home construction and remodeling marketplace, I learned that it is often difficult to accurately describe the kitchen or bath design that the homeowner is attempting to achieve. In those instances, we offer an in-home design service to enable our experienced design staff member to see your project firsthand. Sometimes it’s not just about the measurements of the kitchen, but it’s the layout of the rooms adjoining the kitchen, doorways leading to the kitchen, and the style of the house that gives our staff a better perspective when recommending a particular layout, as well as cabinetry options. EK: What is your typical turnaround time for cabinet installation? Megan: While we are primarily focused on quality and service, we understand that time can be of the essence, particularly when your home is under construction. In these instances, we have developed a system that, with the help of our preferred contractors, allows us to have cabinets installed in our customer’s home within two to three weeks from the time of purchase. Grilled Flank Steak with Southwest Corn and Grape Salad Prep/marinade time: 25 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: Serves 4 Ingredients »» 1 1/4 pounds trimmed flank steak »» 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided »» 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin »» 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander »» Freshly ground pepper to taste »» 3/4 cup corn kernels, either freshly cut off the cob or thawed, frozen corn kernels »» 1/2 avocado, diced »» 3/4 cup red California grapes, halved »» 1/2 cup green California grapes, halved »» 1 tablespoon chopped shallot »» 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil »» 2 tablespoons lime juice »» 1/2 teaspoon lime zest »» 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (optional) Directions Pat the steak dry. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 teaspoon salt, cumin, coriander, and freshly ground pepper. Rub the mixture onto both sides of the steak; let stand for 15 minutes. Place the steak on a medium-high grill and cook it for 5 minutes on one side without moving it. Flip the steak and cook for another 4-5 minutes for medium-rare or until desired doneness is achieved. Transfer the steak to a cutting board, cover loosely with aluminum foil, and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. While the steak is resting, combine the corn, avocado, grapes, shallot, olive oil, lime juice, lime zest, the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste; mix gently. Cut the steak diagonally across the grain into 1/4-inch thick slices. Arrange the steak slices on a serving platter or among four plates and top with corn and grape salad. Garnish with cilantro.

Set aside. Roughly chop the grilled onions and the bread into 1” square pieces. In a large bowl, combine the onions, bread, grapes, radicchio, cucumber, and pistachios. Add the salad dressing and gently toss to combine. Divide the salad into 6 equal servings and top each with goat cheese.

Museum of Appalachia Introduces
Two New Fall Events A S THE LEAVES
begin to change and an autumn chill sets in, the museum of Appalachia will host two new engaging, family-friendly events. Haunts and History, October 26-27, will feature a trick-or-treat trail filled with homemade and vintage candies and treats, as well as local storytellers sharing true and inspired stories about our Appalachian ancestors. Guests can also enjoy hay rides, live music, blacksmithing, pumpkin carving demonstrations, and festive snacks. For an additional charge, attendees can pick pumpkins from the patch or choose a pumpkin to paint and take home. Fall Heritage Day, November 10, will transport guests back in time through the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of pioneer traditions and demonstrations. Guests will enjoy activities and contests, including sheep herding, antique tractors and engines, old-fashioned games, a slow tractor race, a skillet toss and wrench toss, a working threshing machine, and a mule jumping contest. The museum
grounds will also be filled with homemade food, bluegrass and folk music, and interactive demonstrations such as molasses making, sawmilling, soap making, toy and doll making, quilting, and much more. Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center T
HIS HOLIDAY SEASON the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is proud to announce the opening of their newest experience, Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit. Running through the season, the exhibit is sure to be a delightful experience, because nothing says holiday enchantment quite like seeing little faces look on in wonderment as model trains zip by. With three different displays and a bit of history from the Townsend/Walland area, this exhibit will showcase different styles and scales of model trains and is sure to be a joy to the whole family, as well as train enthusiasts. Opening November 9th, this exhibit, which will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at the Heritage Center, will bring back the fond memories of the holiday trains of our childhoods. “The Maryville Model Railroad Club has been instrumental in helping us design and creating these displays,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “We hope that this experience becomes an annual holiday tradition for the families in our community and for folks of all ages. We hope that we can create memories that will last a lifetime for families and promote this unique hobby, all while sharing the great history of this region. This is the perfect way for the Heritage Center to promote the history of our region in a fun and engaging way while giving our guests an experience like none other!” The three differently scaled displays have all been created by the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club. From the winter wonderland/holiday layout to a large “G” scaled display, the members of this club have created intricate details, and their passion for their hobby comes through in their work. 24

“I was wiring trains before I could do multiplications!” said Allan Gartner, a member of the club. There seems to be a special joy in taking things apart to figure out how they work and then putting them back together. The operation of these trains is not as easy as it may appear. Many hours go into programming each one of the locomotives, and each one is different. In one of the detailed displays, the unique history of the region plays the starring role. A replica of the communities of Townsend and Walland have been modeled and even include the famous covered bridge and the tannery in Walland. Without the railroad’s influence, these communities would be completely different. The city of Townsend got its start from The Little River Lumber Company, which started hauling lumber out of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the early 1900s. This lumber and the various products related to logging were vital to the community and surrounding area and were shipped across the country to places like Chicago and many other major cities. After the founding of the National Park, it was the Citizen Conservation Corps (CCC) who was able to utilize these now unused railroad beds and turn them into the hiking trails we know and love throughout the Smokies. Dennis Cherry, one of the members of the MMRC, has been working and playing with model trains for 65 years. The display he has been working on will be the largest by far, with the trains measuring in feet rather than inches. “We all have the scales that we like to work on,” said Dennis. “Garden scale, the big ones, are my specialty and all the wiring that goes with it.” A different scale known as “O” will capture the holiday spirit with its snowcapped hills
and scenery. A special holiday train will disappear through tunnels and race across trestles in a North Pole themed display. Having an eye for detail, Don Clark, another member of the MMRC, has diligently worked to create this display and hopes to share his love of model trains with all ages. A special “Boarding Pass” will be included in the admission price to the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center ($8 for adults and $6 for children and seniors) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 9th through January 6th. It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. This experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center. The exhibit will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Each day the trains are running a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer any questions and to show how they run the trains. Your dog may be terrified, but here are some easy to follow guidelines to assure your pet’s safety: » Pets in Disguise: Avoid costumes on pets. If you do dress up your pet, the costume should not be annoying, unsafe, constrict the pet’s movement or hearing, or impede their ability to breathe or bark. Avoid small, dangling, or easily chewed off pieces on the costume. If your pet seems distressed, allergic, or shows abnormal behavior, remove the costume. Avoid costumes held on with a rubber band, which can result in injury to your dog if mistakenly left on. » No Trick, No Treats: Chocolate, in all forms, especially dark or baking chocolate, and the artificial sweetener xylitol can be deadly for pets. Do not allow kids to share candy with your pets. Adults should never get an animal drunk or high, as intoxication can kill your pet. Call your veterinarian if you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic. » Decorate Sparsely: While not toxic, be
careful with lit jack-o-lanterns and candles. Pets can knock them over, starting a fire. All decorations should be out of your pet’s reach. If chewed, electrical cords from decorations can result in burns or even possibly death. Loud, flashing decorations can be stressful for many pets. And dry ice, used for a “smoking cauldron” effect, can cause serious injury if it comes into contact with the dog’s skin. » Evil in the Night: Be extremely cautious; do not leave pets outside overnight! Many pets are stolen on Halloween night. Pranksters with dark intentions tease, abduct, or torture pets on Halloween. Provide a safe haven for your pet in your home in a room away from all of the Halloween ruckus. Delivering Flowers and Special Moments During the Holidays

S THE SEASONS change and
the holidays approach, many people dedicate their time and resources to those in need. For Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), the holiday season leads to the 10th annual Holiday Delivery initiative. Since the organization’s founding, dedicated volunteers have brought extra cheer by delivering poinsettia plants to patients in area healthcare facilities during the holiday season. In 2017, RAF delivered more than 600 poinsettias to patients in local healthcare facilities such as Parkwest Medical Center, UT Medical Center, Fort Loudoun Medical Center, Blount Memorial Hospital, Tennova Physicians Regional Medical Center, North Knoxville Medical Center, West Hills Health & Rehab, Arbor Terrace Assisted Living, and Heritage Assisted Living. Volunteers and staff gather in December to collect and distribute poinsettias across our community. By spending just a few minutes with each recipient, volunteers are able to spread joy and encouragement where it is most needed. The Holiday Delivery program is funded by generous sponsorships from local companies, organizations, and families throughout Knoxville. A $10 donation sponsors one poinsettia delivery, and the 26

New Feature Exhibition Opening at the Museum of East Tennessee History
W
HEN THE MUSEUM of East Tennessee History opened in 1993, it fulfilled a shared vision to preserve and interpret the region’s rich history for the benefit of all – a vision first articulated a century and a half earlier. On May 5, 1834, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey addressed a group of a historically-minded citizens gathered for the first annual meeting of the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. Concerned that many of the participants in Tennessee’s early history were passing away and with them their memories, Ramsey issued a call to action: “Let us hasten to redeem the time that is lost.” Today, 184 years later, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey’s plea to save Tennessee’s past continues to reverberate in the galleries of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s museum, a permanent home for our region’s cherished stories, traditions, and artifacts. The East Tennessee Historical Society actively began collecting artifacts and producing awardwinning interpretive exhibits in 1993, which has now grown to more than 16,000 artifacts housed within the East Tennessee History Center. In this special exhibition titled A Home for Our Past: The Museum of East Tennessee History at 25, ETHS is excited to highlight East Tennessee’s unique history through a variety of artifacts, with at least one exhibited item from each year of ETHS’s active 25 years of collections, most of which are rarely or never on display. The exhibition includes more than 25 artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of East Tennessee’s unique history. Some of the items include an 1883 Springfield penny-farthing, the first apparatus to be called a “bicycle,” an 1822 artificial hand that belonged to a teacher from Union County, a silver coffee and tea service from the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad presented to Superintendent James Baker Hoxsie upon his retirement in 1866, a coverlet woven by one of the famed Walker sisters of Greenbrier, a shirt stating “Healing in the name of Jesus. Take up serpents, Acts 2:38” worn during religious services practicing snake handling in Cocke County, an 1817 bead necklace belonging to Eliza Sevier, the wife of Templin Ross and the granddaughter of both John Sevier and Cherokee Chief Oconostota, a 1907 baseball uniform from a coal town’s team in Marion County, and the distinctive backdrop and wall clock from WBIR-TV variety program “The Cas Walker
Farm & Home Show.” The exhibit also features a brilliant display of East Tennessee furniture, textiles, folk art, instruments, and vintage toys. Also on display are more than two dozen featured artifacts from the Tennessee State Museum. A new Tennessee State Museum will open on the grounds of the Bicentennial Capital Mall in Nashville on October 4. ETHS is honored to display select East Tennessee artifacts from their collection, highlighting the programmatic ties between the two institutions as well as the museums’ shared mission to preserve Tennessee’s rich history. Selected items include a 1792 map of the State
of Franklin, an 1831 copy of the Cherokee Phoenix & Indians Advocate newspaper, and a 19th century flintlock muzzle loading rifle made by Baxter Bean of Washington County. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is made possible through a collaboration with the Tennessee State Museum and the Knox County Public Library. The exhibit is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through March 31, 2019. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is FREE to all, and ETHS members always receive FREE admission. UITAR AFICIONADOS are
all too aware of guitar maestro, Eric Johnson. His 1990 release Ah Via Musicom, which was certified platinum plus and launched Eric’s signature hit “Cliffs Of Dover,” won the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and made him a much envied and mimicked guitarist. Eric and his band will be performing at the historic Bijou Theatre on October 10th, which promises to be an incredible evening of amazing guitar mastery. I called Eric at his Texas home and asked about what his current tour and show will be like for Knoxville. “This is a retrospective thing with the original members of the Ah Via Musicom record – Tommy Taylor (drums) and Kyle Brock,” he said. “We did almost a threemonth tour about six months ago, and it went really well, so we decided to do a second leg to try to go to all the places that we didn’t get a chance to go to on the first run.” When asked when he last played the Knoxville area, Eric said, “You know, it’s been years. We’ve played Nashville, Memphis. We
haven’t been to Knoxville in quite a while. Probably been 10 years.” I asked if Eric was going completely acoustic or going full-blown electric for this leg of the tour. “I might do a few acoustic things, but it’s with the bass player and drummer, originally, that I played with on the Ah Via Musicom record,” he said. “Basically, I’ll do like a short set of just whatever to start the evening and then take a quick break and come back and play the whole Ah Via Musicom record from start to finish for the second set.” As for what it was like for Eric, Tommy, and Kyle to get back together and play again, whether it was different, and if it bred a new feeling and interpretation for the album, Eric said: “There’s a lot of improvisation with most stuff I do – especially the electric stuff. So there’s a lot of room for improvisation that will be a little bit different than it originally was. But the main frame of the theme once we got together was, like, immediately, there was a chemistry that we had originally. I think certain people have certain chemistry and they’re able to do certain things. It just kinda fell into place – as if there had been no time in between.” Every tour seems to have a crowd favorite with a particular artist. I asked Eric if there is a particular tune that seems to draw the biggest reaction.
“I think everybody likes to hear ‘Cliffs of Dover,’” he said. “There are a couple of other ones like ‘Trademark’ and ‘Righteous” and stuff that did well when they came out back in the ’90s. I think they enjoy just hearing the vibe of that record. I guess it’s nostalgic, obviously. They’re pretty open to whatever we want to play.” His tour runs into early November, so I asked what was on his plate after that and what’s going on for him next year. “Well, I’m really well into an acoustic and piano record right now,” he said. “I’m more than halfway finished with that. I’ve just been working on that for the last month and a half. Gonna try to get that done and out. Next year I’ll probably do some new touring on the new stuff. I just want to keep recording and got a bunch of new tunes and ideas for a new electric record as well. Doing a two-volume acoustic record.” While Eric will likely be entertaining us for many, many years to come, I asked him how he would like to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “I think being remembered for just trying to make people feel good while we’re here, you know?” he said. “Standing on that side of the balance system that is making people feel a little more good or more positive or more wholesome. God knows the world needs it! The more people that stand on that balance, the more energy – you truncate that energy. We’re here, so what are we gonna do while we’re here? Are we gonna use our fantastic talent or art or gift or whatever gift we have… how do we use it? Do we use it to disperse more pandemonium or negativity, or do we want to use it to put smiles on somebody’s face? Nothing more, nothing less is what I’d like to be remembered for.” Then, putting a bit of levity into his final comment to me, Eric adds: “Other than that, I want a 200-foot sculpture right in the middle of Austin, Texas. to revive a lackluster landscape, so for inspiration and expert advice, come to the Fall Plant Sale and Garden Lecture Series hosted by the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson. The event features special presentations and an exceptional plant sale. Garden lectures begin at 1:30 pm on Thursday, October 4. The plant sale runs from 3 to 6:30 pm. All are welcome, and admission is free. After a one-year hiatus due to a building renovation project, the garden lectures return to the program with special guest Vincent Simeone. Simeone is an acclaimed garden writer and speaker traveling throughout the U.S. on the garden lecture circuit. He is the author of six gardening books and has appeared on several gardening television shows, including Martha Stewart Living. Simeone was a student of esteemed horticulture professors Michael Dirr and Allan Armitage and is currently the director of Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, New York. Following Simeone’s presentation, the plant sale will open promptly at 3 pm. At the sale, shoppers will find an array of plants ideal for this region, including trees, shrubs, and a wide selection of pansies and other plants for
winter seasonal interest. UT Gardens’ staff and local Master Gardeners will be on hand to help out with plant questions. After the sale closes at 6:30 pm, all guests are invited to attend the Madison County Master Gardeners’ meeting and potluck meal, where Simeone will once again share his gardening stories and insights. Shoppers who plan to stay for the Master Gardeners’ meeting are asked to bring a dish to share for the meal. Drinks will be provided. With a $35 donation, you can become a Friend of the UT Gardens at the plant sale. The donations help support many of the activities and beneficial research taking place at the UT Gardens, Jackson. Plan the Perfect Pantry

NCE USED just to stock food,
today’s pantries, whether a walk- or reach-in, are often designed to also store small appliances, serving pieces, and even a second refrigerator. They can serve as an extension to the kitchen. While we all would like the largest pantry possible, a small, well-designed pantry is always better than one that is large but badly designed. If you’re planning your pantry for a renovation or new home, there are several important ideas to keep in mind: Examine the Space Make the pantry easily accessible to areas where you prepare food and cook. Everyone’s kitchen layout, habits, and cooking styles are different, so think about your kitchen space and how you use it. Once you know where your pantry will fit best in your kitchen and how much you need to store in it, you can begin planning the layout. Allow for Walking Space In a walk-in pantry, the temptation is to design for minimum aisle space and maximum storage. This is always a mistake. The
minimum walkway width should be 34”. Unloading groceries in too narrow of an aisle may make you feel like a contortionist. Create Effective Storage When designing a pantry, the most important features maximize convenience, visibility, and accessibility. The pantry should be laid out to quickly see the items you need and easily reach them. By making everything convenient, visible, and accessible, you’ll save time and money, because you won’t keep food past its expiration date or forget about items because you can’t see them. Plan on Adjustable Shelving Altering the height of your shelves will accommodate various sizes of food products and small appliances. Make sure the shelves are not too deep and you can see everything at once by placing smaller items at the front and larger ones at the back. Include Special Storage Features Using narrow cubbies for large platters, spice or wine racks, pull-out wire baskets for root vegetables, and other storage compartments are ideal for awkward items that are
hard to stack. Include a Counter If you have the space, include a countertop to set bags of groceries on while they are being unloaded. This area should be at least 15” wide. There are a number of small appliances you may want to use on the pantry counter, so plan on installing an outlet above the counter. Even if you don’t plan to include any outlets, you never know what you’ll want in the future, and at that point it’s not easy to add them. With preplanning, you’ll be surprised at the storage space, no matter the size of your pantry.

T’S HARD to believe that we are celebrating 10 years in business this month. ELCOME TO October, when fall typically starts looking and acting a little more like fall. Temperatures will start to drop, and the humidity will decrease so that we can actually start to enjoy spending time outside. I hope. It all depends on what kind of mood Mother Nature is in. Our average first frost is October 23rd, but it can go a couple of weeks in either direction. Be prepared! There are almost as many chores that need to be done in fall as there are in spring, so let’s get started on your to-do list. » Do your monthly walk around. How did things do this summer? Make notes of what did well and what did not. What changes do you want to make? Is your yard gorgeous in the spring and summer but ugly in the fall and winter? Do plants need to be moved, removed, pruned, or composted? How can you re-work your yard so that you can enjoy it without working yourself to death? If you need help answering those questions, stop in and let us guide you! » I’m sure you have heard that fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs. Our ground doesn’t freeze, so 85% of root growth occurs during the fall and winter.
There are a couple of things, however, to keep in mind: 1. Plants that like the soil warm (perennials, grasses, crape myrtles, etc.) need to be planted soon. If you can’t get them in early this month, wait until spring. 2. October is typically our driest month. If you plant, you will need to water! Remember that sprinklers are not adequate for trees and shrubs. They will require hand watering or drip irrigation. » Did you do a vegetable garden? If it is finished, clean it out and plant a cover crop or amend the soil so that the nutrients can distribute throughout the bed. If you still have cool season vegetables, keep harvesting! Make notes of what did well and plan out your bed for next year. Remember that you cannot replant vegetables in the same place! Move them around. » Have you transitioned your containers for the season yet? Pansies will cheerfully take you through the fall and winter, and there are some lovely companion plants. If you need some suggestions, give us a call or stop by. There are also some great ideas on Pinterest and in various magazines, but you may want to check with us before
planting. Some of those ideas perform best in other parts of the country. » Diseases have been rampant this year. Powdery mildew, leaf spot, shot-hole disease, and root rot have taken a toll on many yards. If you have evergreens that still show signs of fungal disease, you can do a final treatment. Don’t use a product that has a fertilizer at this point in the year, however. You do not want to generate growth. Deciduous trees and shrubs do not need to be treated, but make sure you get all the leaves up off the ground so that the spores don’t re-deposit into the soil. Don’t compost them either or you will contaminate your compost! » Insects are doing a final breeding round and burrowing in, so you can also do one more insecticide treatment on your evergreens. Again, deciduous trees and shrubs do not need to be treated, but get those leaves up! Some plants may need a dormant oil spray, so give us a call if you want to head off problems next year. » If you are not using your containers this winter, dump them out into your flower beds, clean them, and store them where they will not freeze. If you had a problem with fungal diseases, give them a rinse with a mild bleach solution before storing. » If you don’t have many trees in your yard, consider blowing the leaves onto the lawn, running over them with the lawnmower, and then blowing them back onto your beds. They will decompose during the winter and add nutrients to your soil. Don’t do this, however, if you have disease or insect issues. If you have a lot of trees, this may not be practical. » Whether you shred, burn, or rake your leaves, get them off your lawn. If you can’t see your grass, it is being suffocated. » If you don’t have 3” of mulch on your beds, consider adding more. Mulch keeps the moisture and temperature levels stable during the winter. This helps tremendously when the weather is being as erratic as it has been the last couple of years. Remember to make donuts, not volcanoes, around your trees! » Apply a pre-emergent to beds to keep the weed population down. » Don’t forget the birds! Keep your feeders and baths clean and full. Bring in glass or ceramic birdbaths so that they don’t freeze and break. Consider using a plastic or metal alternative or adding a heater. Birds need water in the winter too! T
H E R E N O W N E D German plantsman, Karl Foerster, said that “grasses are the hair of Mother Earth.” Well, Mom becomes a punk rock star with Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) in the garden. When the thousands of tiny bright pink flowers emerge in late summer, they add a floral electrical charge to the garden until frost. Muhlenbergia capillaris (pronunciation – mew-len-BER-jee-uh kap-pill-LAIR-riss), commonly called Muhly grass, is an herbaceous, warmseason perennial grass, hardy in zones 6-11. It is native in a range extending as far west as Texas and Kansas and north into New England. The genus Muhlenbergia was named after one of the first early-American scientists, Lutheran minister, and self-taught botanist, Gotthilf Henry Ernest Muhlenberg (1753-1815). More than 150 species have been described in this genus, but only a few are commercially available. Pink Muhly Grass, which is often sold as Purple Muhly Grass, certainly attracts attention in any garden. It grows from one to four feet tall with a two to four foot spread. The wiry, thin leaves are 18-36 inches long. It clumps but does not spread. The leaves are green throughout the summer and turn copper in the fall. The flowers are grouped together in long, light clusters that mature from the bottom up. They wave and shimmer in the wind. Individual flowers mature to oblong tan or brown seed less than half an inch long. Seed plumes are a food source for birds. Water new plants until they are established. After that, they’ll have good drought tolerance. Muhly grasses need well-drained soil to remain healthy and survive wet winters. They need full sun and dry conditions to look their best and may suffer in shade or wet summers. Use just one or a few to add interesting texture to a perennial garden or border area. Try them on slopes to prevent soil erosion or use in rain gardens. Muhly grass also attracts beneficial insects such as lady beetles (Coccinella spp.), and its clumping habit provides habitat for other wildlife. Plants can be cut back to the ground in late winter before the spring flush of foliage appears. If soil test dictates, give the plants an application of fertilizer as they begin to grow rapidly in spring. The most well-known Muhlenbergia is Pink Muhly, but there are others with magnificent

characteristics. The cultivar ‘White Cloud’ has white instead of pink flowers. The habit is more upright and open and blooms several weeks after Pink Muhly. Lindheimer’s Muhly – Muhlenbergia lindheimeri – is a two to five foot perennial bunchgrass with fine foliage and a fountainlike form. It is a great choice for screening. It has an upright, fountain-like habit. The blue gray foliage reaches four feet, with purplishtinged panicles adding another one to two feet. The blooms ripen to a silvery white. There is also a brilliant hybrid between M. capillaris and M. lindheimeri called ‘Pink Flamingo’. Gulf Muhly – Sweet Grass, Muhlenbergia filipes – is considered by some to be a variety of Muhlenbergia capillaris. It is somewhat shorter and blooms a later than Pink Muhly Grass. Young leaves are used by the Gullah African American population, who live in
the Low Country regions of Georgia and South Carolina, to make traditional sweetgrass baskets. In addition to the M. capillaris species, ‘White Cloud’ and ‘Pink Flamingos’ can be found in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. The UT Gardens in Jackson and Crossville also have the standard Pink Muhly Grass, but the hybrid ‘Pink Flamingo’ can also be found in Jackson. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. About Historic Westwood Historic Westwood was built as a “wedding promise” in 1890 by John Edwin Lutz and his wife, Ann Adelia Armstrong Lutz. Originally sited on 12 acres along Kingston Pike, it was designed by notable architects Baumann Brothers in the grand Richardsonian Romanesque style so popular in the late 19th century. Westwood is one of the treasured houses known as “The Three Sisters,” which also includes Crescent Bend and Bleak House. Adelia Lutz was Tennessee’s first professional female painter, and the house is filled with her beautiful artwork. While placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the property was never protected by local historic zoning or a permanent preservation easement. The Aslan Foundation purchased the iconic property and donated it to Knox Heritage. Now the home is protected into the future and saved
from development, as well as creating a resource for education and preservation advocacy throughout the East Tennessee region. Many capital campaign donors made this possible, including a recent anonymous gift of $65,000, which officially ended the capital campaign which raised more than $1,000,000. The Knox Heritage offices are located at Historic Westwood. It is open as a museum house Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm (free docent-led tours), and the house and grounds are available as a venue for private events.

Great tours are on the road, and one such tour is Toto. They’re playing East Tennessee this month at Greeneville’s Noswonger Performing Arts Center. Toto’s Steve Lukather is a good friend of Boomerocity, so we recently caught up by phone to see what fans can expect from this month’s show and what else has been going on in Luke’s life. One thing is for certain: You never know what you’re going to get when you’re in a conversation with this guy. “I just got back from the Ringo tour,” he said. “I’ve been taking care of some business. Getting ready to go back out on the Toto tour. We did this Weezer track that we’re going to put out here pretty soon that’s pretty funny – pretty cool, actually, and just hanging around my kids. Being a dad. I did practice for a while this morning, though. I still do that to stay in the game a little bit. I try to win the race. I realize I gotta be in it.” Fans can always expect that Luke and the boys in the band will deliver a top-notch show that’s well worth every penny paid. That said, I asked Luke what fans could expect from Toto’s show this month. “We bring our best,” he said. “We go out there as soon as we strap on the guitars and walk out towards the keyboards and the drums and all that. We revert back to being 16-year-old kids, and that comes across. I’m not saying that we’re jumping around like idiots, but when we get out there, it’s 58

an ageless moment. You’re out there. You bring everything you’ve got. We’ve got a wide selection of music to play from, obviously. We’ve got to play the hits and all that stuff, but we’ve got a lot of other music, too. It’s going to be a great show. We’ve been doing it since February in Europe. I’ve been going back and forth. Fifteen weeks in Europe already. I’m ready to play the United States. They get the jokes. You know what I mean? “I promise… no politics. I think we’re all done with it. Let’s play some music, man! That’s what we all want to do. That’s my job. I mean, some people may be more equipped to stand on a soap box, but I’m never really that guy. I’m just your neighborhood guitar player who’ll show up and show you a good time for a couple of hours. We’re going to do that. I promise you that!” I asked Luke what he’s got going on after the Toto tour. “Oh, man! I’m doing Ringo. I’m doing Toto. My book came out last month about my life in the studios and how I came up. We’ve got a box set coming. We’ve got a live DVD from the 40th. There’s more touring all the way through next year. Busy. Happy. Blessed. Thankful in a crazy world that I just don’t want to look at anymore. I pray and hope for the best, be a nice guy, and spread love. That’s about all I can say.” I couldn’t let our conversation conclude without asking him about his new book, The Gospel According to Luke.
“The book’s just a story of my life,” he said. “It’s called The Gospel According to Luke, which is a little play on words. I didn’t mean to offend anybody. It’s just the story of how I came up. Famous records that I played on. People that I’ve worked with. Funny stories. People that I grew up with. Most of them turned out to be famous people. It’s just where I was born – Los Angeles. I had to edit 400 pages into a 300 page book with pictures and stuff. But I have enough for an encyclopedia, so we’ll see. There may be a movie. You never know! Who would you think would play me?” One thing is for certain: We can expect to see, hear, and read a lot more from Steve Lukather in the years to come. Alliance is pleased to present four new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 5-27. A reception will take place on Friday, October 5, from 5 to 9 pm as part of First Friday activities downtown to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. T h e ex h i b i t i o n s p re s e nt e d a t t h e Emporium are part of American Craft Week, a national event celebrating the tradition of American craft in artists’ studios, galleries museums, schools, and festivals. Tennessee Artists Association: The Fall Juried Show: 44th Fall Art Exhibition in the Main Gallery The Tennessee Artists Association (TAA) will feature original art by more than 20 Tennessee artists, including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, photography, and mixed media. As TAA’s ninth show at the Emporium Center, they are excited about the opportunity to present the breadth and quality of Tennessee artists’ works represented by its members. The 44th Fall Show is juried by Julie Rabun, Assistant Professor of Art at Carson-Newman. Tennessee Artists Association (TAA) was founded in 1972. The TAA is a civic organization of fine artists with about 50 members. TAA encourages each individual artist to grow and develop through fellowship with other artists, educational programs, and opportunities to exhibit and sell art, and it serves the community through classes. Membership in TAA is open to anyone age 18 years and older and a resident of the state of Tennessee. Dues are currently $50 for single membership, $60 for family, and $15 for students. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 6500
Northshore Drive, which includes a business meeting, a program, and a time for fellowship and refreshments. Guests are always welcome to attend. Mid-South Sculpture Alliance SELECT: Member’s Exhibition in the Balcony and Atrium Galleries Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA) is an affiliate organization of the International Sculpture Center (ISC). Its membership is open to anyone, anywhere with an interest in and commitment to the field of sculpture. MSA advances the creation and awareness of sculpture in its many and varied forms, promoting a supportive environment for sculpture and sculptors. Its annual conference takes place in Knoxville from October 4-7. In collaboration with the UT-Knoxville Sculpture Program, MSA presents a juried exhibition of work by its members. Selected sculptures will offer a dynamic exhibition highlighting a variety of techniques, media, and content. Juror Elizabeth Turk will give a talk and present the juror’s choice award at 7 pm during the First Friday reception on October 5. A native Californian, Turk is an artist, primarily known for marble sculpture. Turk has also mastered a variety of media, molding forms in wax and clay, casting objects in bronze and iron, and working with fragile material such as glass and porcelain. In 2010, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and the Annalee & Barnett Newman Foundation award. Today she splits time between Santa Ana, CA, and NYC. Turk received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, Rinehart School of Sculpture in 1994, her BA from Scripps College, Claremont, CA in 1983. She has been represented by Hirschl & Adler, Modern since 2000, and continues to exhibit more experimental work in other venues. I work hard to make a living out of my art, and I will thankfully go wherever this life takes me.” Bryan Wilkerson: Tales from the Kiln – Skulls, Goons, and Toons in the Display Case A collection of handmade ceramics and original drawings by Bryan Wilkerson, a Tennessee native and Professor of Art and Design at Roane State Community College. His creative practices are focused primarily on ceramics and public art but extend into design and drawing. His work explores humor, craft, irony, and play through common symbolic references. EVERY YEAR
at my annual physical, without fail, my healthcare provider asks me if I have prepared or amended my living will. Contemplating our own mortality often makes us feel uncomfortable, but as I get older, I have come to appreciate that a living will may become the greatest gift you or I can leave our loved ones. And no, a living will is not something that just the elderly should consider. Regardless of our age, each of us is only one unforeseen accident away from benefiting from this simple yet all important document. A living will is a written directive to your family, personal physician, and other healthcare providers about just what type and level of care you would wish to receive in the event that you were unable to make important personal medical decisions on your own in the event of a medical emergency. Your living will can be of great comfort to your loved ones who might be called on to act on your behalf in the absence of this document. Let’s be honest, not everyone knows what decisions you might make on your own, and two or more individuals that might be asked about your

A Professional Understands the Difference Between Criticism and Correction
I
NTENT IS EVERYTHING. The
easiest way for me to describe the difference here is to simply give the definition of these two words: » Criticism: The act or an instance of making an unfavorable or severe judgment, comment, etc. » Correction: Something offered or substituted for an error; an improvement; an adjustment made in order to increase accuracy, as in the use of an instrument or the solution of a problem When we’re working with others, of course there are going to be endless situations where we disagree with how someone is handling a solution, or perhaps we dislike the approach one is taking. Yes, we can criticize all day long if we choose. We can announce to the world how we would do it differently, how our ideas are better, how we are superior in all things and in all ways, including thoughts, actions, behavior, etc. Is this sometimes effective in getting what we want? Yes, sometimes. What’s the end result, however, if this is our common

approach to making changes or affecting change? People tire of us, of our criticism and complaining, and of our overall negative character. It’s exhausting to be around. What’s the solution? Correcting with a purpose. Yes, sometimes behavior or ideas or thought processes do need adjusting, but hopefully, if approached in the spirit of improvement instead of chastisement, then the one needing the correction is usually much more willing to comply. We must motivate and inspire others to conform to the standards of excellence. We do this by setting the example, setting the expectations with extreme clarity, and then correcting with the purpose of improving if needed. Instead of demanding correction, I have learned that with asking enough questions, usually the correcting can come from the individual rather than me imposing the correcting. Here’s a list of questions that encourage correction. » This looks great. Can you think of any way that we could tighten up the expenses for this project? » Wo u l d y o u m a k e a n y o t h e r
recommendations that would further the effectiveness of this proposal? » Are there any other resources that we could “tap into” that would free up some of the resources we are using for this project? » Could you brainstorm with your colleague about a solution to that one area that we still haven’t determined the most efficient way to handle? » Looking back, what would you have done differently? » What have you learned from this experience? Before we start to criticize, let’s ask ourselves if we are just being critical, or is our purpose to improve and move forward? Unless we have a better solution, it’s best to keep our mouths closed.

Disney’s 101 Dalmatians Kids:

in partnership with C l a y t o n Fo u n d a t i o n , p r e s e n t l i v e performances of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians Kids, a new adaptation of the classic Disney film for children and families. The play contains all the wonderful songs from the hilarious film. The live stage musical will be performed October 4 and 5 at 7 pm, October 6 at 1 and 5 pm, and October 7 at 3 and 7 pm. Based on the classic animated film, Roger and Anita live happily in London with their Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita. But the villainous Cruella de Vil plots to steal the dogs from the happy couple. The Dalmatians must rally all the dogs of London for a daring puppy rescue from Cruella and her hilarious bumbling henchmen. The play is performed by 21 talented young actors from ages 6 to 16. Lydia Steimer, a student at Bearden High, will play Cruella de Vil. Eight actors are making their KCT debuts: Millie Braude, Vivienne Bullard, McKenna DeLong, Miller Gray, Lena Kennedy, Kate
Stinnett, Amelia White, and Eleanor Wood. The rest of the cast includes KCT veterans Sydney Allen, Conard Belitz, Grace Bell, Miley Jenkins, Bray Krumenacker, Alex Montgomery, Hattie Perry, Leeland Robbins, Pressley Rule, Lily Segars, Caroline Simmons, and Macon Sloan. Ashlee Latimer will direct the production. Ashlee spent six years at KCT as a student and participant before moving on to the University of Tennessee. In 2017, she
joined the New York production team of the Broadway revival of “Once On This Island.” In 2018, she shared a Tony-Award for Best Revival of a Musical with her production team.
