Introducing

Knox Cabinet Co.

Discover Your Home’s Showcase Kitchen

M

OST HOMEOWNERS would agree that their home’s kitchen is the most important room in their home. Our kitchen is the center of our family’s day-to-day living. Our day begins in our kitchen with our first cup of coffee and continues on throughout the day as we cook, dine, and socialize in the kitchen with family and friends.

The kitchen is where we bond, and as Americans, the trend is for families to become even more kitchen-centric in the future as kitchens grow in size with the addition of gourmet appliances, expanded seating areas, flat screen TVs, and even fireplaces. Whether you’re designing a kitchen for your new dream home or redesigning a new kitchen for an existing home, success in creating your home’s showcase kitchen starts with a well-thought out and implemented design. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to introduce you to Knox Cabinet 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2018

Co. co-owner, Megan Thomas. Megan and her fellow co-owners, Brian Davis and her brother, Lane Thomas, share decades of combined entrepreneurial experience, including residential development and construction, residential remodeling, property management, commercial redevelopment, and kitchen and bath cabinetry design and sales. If you are truly searching for the highest quality kitchen and bathroom cabinetry at near wholesale pricing and a turn-key experience, we think you will enjoy this month’s interview with Megan. EK: What first inspired you to open Knox

Cabinet Co.? Megan: Launching Knox Cabinet Co. seemed liked a natural extension of our combined experiences and talents. Brian and I have been buying and remodeling existing homes for resale for many years. During this process, we learned the importance of creating dynamic kitchens and baths in the homes we sold. They became the centerpiece of each successful sale. Although we had a wonderful relationship with our cabinet vendor, we began to search for a new cabinet line that offered more options yet was still affordable. After discovering an exciting new cabinet

manufacturer, we completed our new showroom on Hardin Valley Road. We like to refer to our new showroom as a Discovery Center, where you can discover all of the possibilities that exist for creating showcase quality kitchens and baths in your homes. Another thing we think you will enjoy about doing business with Knox Cabinet Co. is the “family feel.” That’s because you will find both Brian’s mom and my mom, in addition to my not-so-little brother, Lane, at our showroom happy to assist you. A former Bearden High School baseball standout, Lane now plays with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. But I have drafted him during the off-season to put his real estate and teamwork expertise to work at Knox Cabinet Co. EK: Both you and Brian have decades of combined residential development, construction, remodeling, and property management experience. How has this helped you at Knox Cabinet Co.? Megan: Because we were the customers for so many years, we gained an appreciation for what homeowners shopping for kitchen and bath cabinetry wanted from their cabinet supplier. Our goal is to make your experience of shopping for quality and affordable cabinetry as easy and as seamless as possible, creating for our customers the showcase quality look they are searching for while remaining within their budget. EK: Tell our readers about the many features and benefits of Knox Cabinet Co.’s kitchen and bath cabinetry. Megan: All of our cabinets are built from solid wood construction without the particle board and MDF so often found today even in some brand name cabinets, and all drawers are dovetailed. Just a few of the available options include pull-out trash receptacles, microwave cabinets, spice rack pull-outs, and file drawers for starters. But I’m confident that your favorite option will be the multiple stain and paint options and door styles available for you to select from. These are truly high-end cabinets at a very affordable price. EK: It would appear that many of the standard features of your cabinets are optional with other cabinet manufactures. Megan: At our price point, you would be correct. Homeowners will find that other comparably priced cabinets do not include the soft-close doors and soft-close dovetailed drawers that we offer as standard features. They will also find that they have far fewer options to select from. All of these added features can transform an ordinary kitchen and bath into an extraordinary kitchen and bath. EK: Many homeowners will be surprised by both the quality of your cabinets and their competitive pricing. How is that possible? Megan: Our highest priority from the beginning was to offer a top quality, affordable solid wood cabinet that offered the options that we knew our customers would Photos by D. Roberts Photography

want in order to create that quality, custom kitchen and bath look. We then developed a proprietary business model with low overhead, custom design capabilities, and intelligent logistics in order to offer this unique value to all our customers. EK: Share with our readers your turn-key approach, including sales, design, and preferred vendor installation. Megan: I believe this is truly another area that distinguishes Knox Cabinet Co. from its competitors. We already understood the retail cabinetry marketplace from the perspective of the customer. We simply set out to redesign the experience to make it easier and more enjoyable for our customers to achieve their dream of creating the look that they envisioned. Next we designed a showroom featuring multiple designer created vignettes to help inspire you to discover that showcase quality kitchen and bathroom that are waiting to be discovered in your home. With the assistance of one of our designers, we will guide you through every step of the design process, answer all of your questions, offer recommendations, and even offer CAD drawings using our 2020 design software, which can display your proposed layout design on our 65” flat screen monitor in our dedicated conference room. We have even compiled a preferred vendor list of state certified contractors for your convenience who can assist you in installation of your home’s new cabinets. As I mentioned before, our goal has been to make things as easy and seamless as possible for our customers. We are in the showroom Monday through Saturday and can help with really anything the customer needs – whether it’s providing an opinion on selections, laying out the customer’s kitchen on 2020 design software, or aligning them with our preferred installers. EK: Do you also offer a preferred vendor for cabinet countertops? Megan: Because new cabinets typically require new countertops, each of our vignettes feature a variety of solid surface countertops on all our cabinets designed to inspire you. We also have samples displayed throughout our design showroom for your

convenience. Should you discover a surface that you love, we can provide pricing and arrange to have our preferred fabricator/ installer come to your home to measure, fabricate, and install your countertops once your new cabinets are installed. EK: You offer showroom design services. Do you offer in-home design services as well? Megan: In the home construction and remodeling marketplace, I learned that it is often difficult to accurately describe the kitchen or bath design that the homeowner is attempting to achieve. In those instances, we offer an in-home design service to enable our experienced design staff member to see your project firsthand. Sometimes it’s not just about the measurements of the kitchen, but it’s the layout of the rooms adjoining the kitchen, doorways leading to the kitchen, and the style of the house that gives our staff a better perspective when recommending a particular layout, as well as cabinetry options. EK: What is your typical turnaround time for cabinet installation? Megan: While we are primarily focused on quality and service, we understand that time can be of the essence, particularly when your home is under construction. In these instances, we have developed a system that, with the help of our preferred contractors, allows us to have cabinets installed in our customer’s home within two to three weeks from the time of purchase. EK: How can our readers learn more about Knox Cabinet Co.? Megan: We’d love for readers to visit our showroom, located at 10238 Hardin Valley Road in Knoxville. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Appointments are encouraged and can be made by calling 865-674-5669. Readers can also visit our website at www.knoxcabinetcompany. com or check us out on Facebook at Knoxville Cabinet Co. or Instagram at @ knoxcabinetcompany. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Megan: We understand that you have many cabinet options to select from, but I would like to encourage your readers to visit our new showroom to discover for themselves not only the quality of our cabinetry, but the selection and competitive pricing as well. Even if you are close to making a final decision, I challenge you to compare our quality and price. Why not let our family help your family to create that showcase kitchen and bathroom that is waiting to be discovered in your home?

The First Thing Your Holiday Guests See When They Walk Through Your Front Door

T

HANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, and New Year’s family events are just a few short months away, and there’s plenty to do with holiday decorating, meals to plan, and then there’s the entire home to clean from top to bottom. But no amount of cleaning and polishing will remove those unsightly dents, scratches, and UV damage to your home’s once beautiful hardwood floors. As your guests arrive this holiday season, the first thing they are going to see are your home’s hardwood floors. You’ve tried everything, but nothing has worked, so you just keep covering your floors with runners and throw rugs and hope that nobody will notice. Here’s one surefire way to restore your home’s hardwood floors to their original showcase quality appearance: Refinish them. But isn’t that messy? Not anymore. New hardwood flooring refinishing technology means that you no longer have to move out of your home to escape the dust – the result of sanding – that will be deposited throughout your entire home. But how do you know if your refinishing contractor uses this latest technology? European Fine Hardwood Floors of Knoxville uses the newest dust-free technology available from Bona, the most respected

BEFORE

AFTER name in the hardwood f loor refinishing industry worldwide, to provide homeowners with a totally dust-free refinishing experience. Founder and owner of European Fine Hardwood Floors, Valera Tomescu, learned his craft from his grandfather in Europe during several decades. Valera has combined the skills he learned from his grandfather with the state-of-the-art technology developed by the world’s number one name in the hardwood floor refinishing industry: Bona. Both the skills Valera has learned and the latest technology made available from Bona allow homeowners to experience an entirely dust-free refinishing experience, as all dust from sanding is safely removed out-of-doors using high-efficiency vacuums placed outside your home, which are connected to their refinishing equipment with high-volume vacuum hoses. The

result? No dust. European Fine Hardwood Floors is truly not your typical hardwood flooring installer or refinisher. Here’s something else you might not know. Many homeowners also use their refinishing project as an opportunity to change their floor’s stain color. You also have the choice of final finishes, including odor-free, water-based finishes. European Fine Hardwood Floors, the recipient of the much coveted Bona Certified Craftsman Award, an honor received by very few hardwood flooring refinishing contractors, offers you further assurance that all of the work performed by them will adhere to the highest quality standards in the industry. Why not return your home’s hardwood flooring to its original showcase quality appearance just in time for the holidays – and without the dust? The solution is simple: Call Valera at European Fine Hardwood Floors today and get your hardwood floors ready to greet your holiday guests.

HE ART MARKET GALLERY, a

60+ member juried artist co-operative in downtown Knoxville, celebrates Tennessee Craft Week October 5-14 by showcasing the work of five jewelry artisans. This special show, called “BeDazzled,” will run at the gallery throughout the month of October. Tennessee Craft Week is a collection of craft events and happenings taking place across the state every October. Its purpose is to connect and celebrate the work of craft artists and the businesses that support them. The Art Market Gallery is lucky to have five talented jewelry artists as members: Roger Kroll, Jennifer Lindsay, Nancy Rowland-Engle, Lynn Straka, and Kristine Taylor. Each will have their work on display during “BeDazzled,” bringing their own perspectives, inspirations, and skills to the craft of jewelry making: Roger Kroll’s aim is to create a functional art form with his jewelry and metal art by exploring form, shape, color, and texture; Jennifer Lindsay fashions one-ofa-kind, intricately beaded pieces inspired by architecture, gardens, and historical customs; Nancy Rowland-Engle creates contemporary metallic jewelry with an edgy, sculptural form; Lynn Straka is influenced by nature in making her mixed-media jewelry, incorporating sterling silver, copper, and bronze with semi-precious stones; and Kristine Taylor is inspired by good design and beautiful color in crafting her unique polymer clay designs, blending contemporary and ancient forms with abstract images. Please join us in celebrating these talented artists and some of the finest jewelry craft that Tennessee has to offer. Dollywood Earns Three Golden Ticket Awards for Entertainment, Friendliness, and Christmas Event

D

OLLYWOOD CONTINUED

its winning last month, racking up three more “best of ” awards at Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards ceremony held at Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, Missouri. Dollywood earned finalist placement in eight categories. “I’ve said it before, but back when I started Dollywood, I remember just prayin’ that people were going to come visit us that very first year,” Dolly Parton said with a laugh. “Here we are in our 33rd season, still earning some of the biggest awards and honors you can get, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of what we’re accomplishing. I started Dollywood because I’m proud of the Smoky Mountains and wanted more people to come experience the beauty God has put right here in our backyard. We’re adding Wildwood Grove next year, and I know it’s going to give families more room to explore, imagine, play, and spend time together here in the Smokies. “The other reason I started Dollywood was because I wanted to hire the good people of Sevier County to work in the park. I knew when folks came and met the people who live and work here, they’d want to come back year after year because they would feel like part of the family. It must be working; we just won Friendliest Park for the seventh year! I’m so proud of the job our people do treating our guests well and going above and beyond to give them a truly memorable experience.” Dollywood’s three Golden Ticket Awards include: » Friendliest Park, for the seventh consecutive year » Best Shows, Dollywood’s 10th consecutive win » Best Christmas Event, the only park to ever earn this award, Dollywood celebrates its 11th consecutive win

16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2018

Dollywood also had Top Ten (finalist) positions in five additional categories: » Best Food, second place » Cleanest Park, third place » Best Water Park for Dollywood’s Splash Country, fourth place » Best Park, fifth place » Best Wooden Coaster for Lightning Rod, sixth place » Best Wooden Coaster for Thunderhead, 10th place “During the two decades that Amusement Today has honored parks with the Golden Ticket Awards, it has been incredibly impressive to see Dollywood continue one successful move after another,” said Tim Baldwin, Golden Ticket Awards Communications Coordinator. “The park’s presence spread through all the categories is undeniable. They seem to hit the key ingredients to creating a wonderful guest experience – the food, the staff, the entertainment, and rides are all top-notch.” Calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today, the industry’s leading trade publication, the Golden Ticket Awards are the results of a detailed survey sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans around the world in balanced geographical regions. Voters are asked to rate the “best” in a number of categories such as best parks, roller coasters, water rides, shows, kids’ area, landscaping, and Christmas events. “I think our voters, along with any guest that enjoys a visit to Dollywood, are moved by the wonderful experience,” said Baldwin. “The environment is fun and welcoming, which makes it so memorable. I think each of us embraces those times when family or friends just have a wonderful day together. That’s Dollywood.” The Golden Ticket Awards are the most

sought after awards in the business of amusements and attractions. The awards have become the subject of much discussion by park aficionados the world over and garnered mentions in such notable media outlets as USA Today and the Chicago Tribune and by the late radio newsman Paul Harvey. The awards also were the topic of a one-hour Travel Channel documentary. A number of memorable moments are in store for Dollywood guests in the coming months. Dollywood’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana features the return of an even larger Great Pumpkin LumiNights with double the displays and double the fun! Additionally, more than 625 Southern gospel concerts take place throughout the festival. Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana, now the 11-time winner for Best Christmas event, grows with the addition of Glacier Ridge, an immersive new experience that adds more than one million lights to the park. What Every Woman Should Know

ADIES, DO YOU

ever feel like you’re juggling so many balls in the air that if someone hands you one more ball, it’s all going to come crashing down? Now add into the mix the startling statistic that 75% of unpaid Yvonne Marsh, caregivers are women, and those CFP®, CPA caregivers are providing 20 hours/ week caring for their mother. Being a woman is a two-edged sword when it comes to long-term care (LTC) – we are both more apt to be the caregiver and the one ultimately needing care. Sociological expectations dictate that women step into the role of caregiver first and indeed handle the most difficult tasks of helping with toileting, bathing, and dressing. The sacrifice of these caregivers is not just personal time – it is the physical stress of caregiving, time lost toward their career, parenting their own children, or leading a healthy lifestyle. Women are more apt to need care, too. We live longer than men, are more predisposed to Alzheimer’s and dementia, and, in fact, typically need LTC for 1.5 years longer than men. But as widows, we are more likely to live alone, with no one to help with daily activities, and have less household income. Here are three simple steps to help you prepare for these challenges: 1. Think about your life and the impact if you or a loved one would need care. Can you provide it without sacrificing your own career or financial well-being? Can you physically perform the tasks, or can you pay someone to do it for you? 2. Plan for LTC as a family. Talk with your spouse, siblings, parents, and in-laws. Have a group meeting with a financial professional versed in LTC planning who can provide planning options and facilitate the discussion. 3. Call us or visit www.marshlongtermcare.com and request a complimentary copy of Don Quante’s book, Don’t Go Broke in a Nursing Home, to start educating yourself on the many positive ways to solve the LTC challenge. Learn about veteran’s benefits, asset-based LTC solutions that also provide a death benefit for your heirs, and how to leverage the cash value in existing annuities or life policies for tax-free LTC. LTC costs can derail the most carefully thought out retirement plan, so get started today – there’s no time to waste.

My Invisalign Experience B Y J U DY I R M E N

S

INCE EARLY CHILDHOOD,

I have been self-conscious of my less-than-perfect smile. Although my parents made certain that I visited our dentist regularly, braces were simply not in our family budget. Throughout adulthood, I considered braces but was once again self-conscious about my appearance. After all, metal braces on an adult woman were somewhat unusual. That was until I learned that a growing number of adults and teens were beginning to take advantage of the revolutionary new treatment for crooked or crowded teeth from Invisalign. Invisalign is the clear choice for a perfect smile. I especially like the fact that the old style metal braces are replaced with clear, nearly undetectable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth over time. With the hope that I could finally enjoy the smile that I had only dreamed of in

the past, I visited Dr. Jonathan Bradshaw at Heritage Family Dentistry in Farragut. Both he and his team made me feel comfortable from the very beginning. They listened carefully to me, answered all of my questions, and described the entire Invisalign process thoroughly. My Invisalign experience began with a personalized treatment plan. We started with a digital 3D image of my teeth. Using their state-of-the-art software, Invisalign

developed a custom treatment plan designed to gently shift my teeth using a series of clear aligners that I replace at two-week intervals. Although I’m only six weeks into my treatment, I am excited about my future new smile. I’ve experienced no discomfort whatsoever, and my aligners are easily removed to eat or be cleaned. My only regret is that I wish I would have acted sooner. If you are like me and you have a smile that has eluded you, I can unconditionally recommend Dr. Bradshaw and the Heritage Family Dentistry team. You’ll love your new smile, and the warm luxury spa neck roll and music customized to your taste are just icing on the cake.

people listened,” said Carole Zwick, owner of Green Acres Flea Market on Alcoa Highway. This busy entrepreneur and mother of two grown sons understands what it’s like to burn the candle at both ends and in the middle. “I understood the importance of regular exercise and had worked out with fitness trainers in the past,” she said. But as is so often the case with busy people, we frequently put off important activities such as exercise when there are so many demands on our time. After six years of inactivity, Carole learned from her doctor that a bone density scan revealed that she was losing bone mass. “That’s when Buddy recommended Fitness Together,” said Carole. “He said that they were the only place to go. He also recommended Elise, one of Fitness Together’s personal trainers, as my coach. Because I trusted Buddy, I knew that I could trust Fitness Together. “Elise and the Fitness Together team worked with me to create a unique program designed to help me achieve my personal goals. They asked a lot of questions and listened carefully. It was obvious that they were committed to learning as much about me as possible in order to help me reach my goals safely and effectively.” Carole appreciates the smaller and more individualized feel of Fitness Together. It’s a much more personal experience that you might have a difficult time experiencing in the typical warehouse gym venues. “Honestly, if I had joined a large health club, I don’t think I’d go back after the first week,” said Carole. “Since beginning my workouts at Fitness Together, my sense of well-being has improved, I am getting stronger, and I have more energy to take on the demands of being a business owner.” When asked if she would recommend Fitness Together, Carole responded, “Absolutely! Training at Fitness Together is one of the best decisions I ever made!” If you’re ready to make a commitment to a healthier you, call or text 865-273-0380 for more information or to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation consultation and complimentary workout. Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center T

HIS HOLIDAY SEASON the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is proud to announce the opening of their newest experience, Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit. Running through the season, the exhibit is sure to be a delightful experience, because nothing says holiday enchantment quite like seeing little faces look on in wonderment as model trains zip by. With three different displays and a bit of history from the Townsend/Walland area, this exhibit will showcase different styles and scales of model trains and is sure to be a joy to the whole family, as well as train enthusiasts. Opening November 9th, this exhibit, which will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at the Heritage Center, will bring back the fond memories of the holiday trains of our childhoods. “The Maryville Model Railroad Club has been instrumental in helping us design and creating these displays,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “We hope that this experience becomes an annual holiday tradition for the families in our community and for folks of all ages. We hope that we can create memories that will last a lifetime for families and promote this unique hobby, all while sharing the great history of this region. This is the perfect way for the Heritage Center to promote the history of our region in a fun and engaging way while giving our guests an experience like none other!” The three differently scaled displays have all been created by the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club. From the winter wonderland/holiday layout to a large “G” scaled display, the members of this club have created intricate details, and their passion for their hobby comes through in their work. 24

“I was wiring trains before I could do multiplications!” said Allan Gartner, a member of the club. There seems to be a special joy in taking things apart to figure out how they work and then putting them back together. The operation of these trains is not as easy as it may appear. Many hours go into programming each one of the locomotives, and each one is different. In one of the detailed displays, the unique history of the region plays the starring role. A replica of the communities of Townsend and Walland have been modeled and even include the famous covered bridge and the tannery in Walland. Without the railroad’s influence, these communities would be completely different. The city of Townsend got its start from The Little River Lumber Company, which started hauling lumber out of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the early 1900s. This lumber and the various products related to logging were vital to the community and surrounding area and were shipped across the country to places like Chicago and many other major cities. After the founding of the National Park, it was the Citizen Conservation Corps (CCC) who was able to utilize these now unused railroad beds and turn them into the hiking trails we know and love throughout the Smokies. Dennis Cherry, one of the members of the MMRC, has been working and playing with model trains for 65 years. The display he has been working on will be the largest by far, with the trains measuring in feet rather than inches. “We all have the scales that we like to work on,” said Dennis. “Garden scale, the big ones, are my specialty and all the wiring that goes with it.” A different scale known as “O” will capture the holiday spirit with its snowcapped hills

and scenery. A special holiday train will disappear through tunnels and race across trestles in a North Pole themed display. Having an eye for detail, Don Clark, another member of the MMRC, has diligently worked to create this display and hopes to share his love of model trains with all ages. A special “Boarding Pass” will be included in the admission price to the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center ($8 for adults and $6 for children and seniors) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 9th through January 6th. It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. This experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center. The exhibit will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Each day the trains are running a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer any questions and to show how they run the trains. Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit has been made possible by funding from Blount Partnership, East Tennessee Foundation, and donations from Richardson Construction. For more information, call the Heritage Center at 865-776-4388 or visit www.gsmheritagecenter.org.

Halloween:

A Frightening Time for Pets!

I

T’S HALLOWEEN night, the doorbell rings nonstop, cute little goblins and witches all appear at the door for trick and treats. Your dog may be terrified, but here are some easy to follow guidelines to assure your pet’s safety: » Pets in Disguise: Avoid costumes on pets. If you do dress up your pet, the costume should not be annoying, unsafe, constrict the pet’s movement or hearing, or impede their ability to breathe or bark. Avoid small, dangling, or easily chewed off pieces on the costume. If your pet seems distressed, allergic, or shows abnormal behavior, remove the costume. Avoid costumes held on with a rubber band, which can result in injury to your dog if mistakenly left on. » No Trick, No Treats: Chocolate, in all forms, especially dark or baking chocolate, and the artificial sweetener xylitol can be deadly for pets. Do not allow kids to share candy with your pets. Adults should never get an animal drunk or high, as intoxication can kill your pet. Call your veterinarian if you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic. » Decorate Sparsely: While not toxic, be

careful with lit jack-o-lanterns and candles. Pets can knock them over, starting a fire. All decorations should be out of your pet’s reach. If chewed, electrical cords from decorations can result in burns or even possibly death. Loud, flashing decorations can be stressful for many pets. And dry ice, used for a “smoking cauldron” effect, can cause serious injury if it comes into contact with the dog’s skin. » Evil in the Night: Be extremely cautious; do not leave pets outside overnight! Many pets are stolen on Halloween night. Pranksters with dark intentions tease, abduct, or torture pets on Halloween. Provide a safe haven for your pet in your home in a room away from all of the Halloween ruckus. Guests at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits will have their own Halloween party the weekend prior to Halloween with special nutritious doggy treats.

Delivering Flowers and Special Moments During the Holidays

A

S THE SEASONS change and

the holidays approach, many people dedicate their time and resources to those in need. For Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), the holiday season leads to the 10th annual Holiday Delivery initiative. Since the organization’s founding, dedicated volunteers have brought extra cheer by delivering poinsettia plants to patients in area healthcare facilities during the holiday season. In 2017, RAF delivered more than 600 poinsettias to patients in local healthcare facilities such as Parkwest Medical Center, UT Medical Center, Fort Loudoun Medical Center, Blount Memorial Hospital, Tennova Physicians Regional Medical Center, North Knoxville Medical Center, West Hills Health & Rehab, Arbor Terrace Assisted Living, and Heritage Assisted Living. Volunteers and staff gather in December to collect and distribute poinsettias across our community. By spending just a few minutes with each recipient, volunteers are able to spread joy and encouragement where it is most needed. The Holiday Delivery program is funded by generous sponsorships from local companies, organizations, and families throughout Knoxville. A $10 donation sponsors one poinsettia delivery, and the 26

Additionally, donations can be made in honor of someone special, and that person will receive a greeting from us informing them of the gift! Many families choose to make a donation in memory of a loved one, while others find volunteering together to be a rewarding way to serve the community during the holidays. HEN THE MUSEUM of East Tennessee History opened in 1993, it fulfilled a shared vision to preserve and interpret the region’s rich history for the benefit of all – a vision first articulated a century and a half earlier. On May 5, 1834, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey addressed a group of a historically-minded citizens gathered for the first annual meeting of the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. Concerned that many of the participants in Tennessee’s early history were passing away and with them their memories, Ramsey issued a call to action: “Let us hasten to redeem the time that is lost.” Today, 184 years later, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey’s plea to save Tennessee’s past continues to reverberate in the galleries of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s museum, a permanent home for our region’s cherished stories, traditions, and artifacts. The East Tennessee Historical Society actively began collecting artifacts and producing awardwinning interpretive exhibits in 1993, which has now grown to more than 16,000 artifacts housed within the East Tennessee History Center. In this special exhibition titled A Home for Our Past: The Museum of East Tennessee History at 25, ETHS is excited to highlight East Tennessee’s unique history through a variety of artifacts, with at least one exhibited item from each year of ETHS’s active 25 years of collections, most of which are rarely or never on display. The exhibition includes more than 25 artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of East Tennessee’s unique history. Some of the items include an 1883 Springfield penny-farthing, the first apparatus to be called a “bicycle,” an 1822 artificial hand that belonged to a teacher from Union County, a silver coffee and tea service from the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad presented to Superintendent James Baker Hoxsie upon his retirement in 1866, a coverlet woven by one of the famed Walker sisters of Greenbrier, a shirt stating “Healing in the name of Jesus. Take up serpents, Acts 2:38” worn during religious services practicing snake handling in Cocke County, an 1817 bead necklace belonging to Eliza Sevier, the wife of Templin Ross and the granddaughter of both John Sevier and Cherokee Chief Oconostota, a 1907 baseball uniform from a coal town’s team in Marion County, and the distinctive backdrop and wall clock from WBIR-TV variety program “The Cas Walker

Farm & Home Show.” The exhibit also features a brilliant display of East Tennessee furniture, textiles, folk art, instruments, and vintage toys. Also on display are more than two dozen featured artifacts from the Tennessee State Museum. A new Tennessee State Museum will open on the grounds of the Bicentennial Capital Mall in Nashville on October 4. ETHS is honored to display select East Tennessee artifacts from their collection, highlighting the programmatic ties between the two institutions as well as the museums’ shared mission to preserve Tennessee’s rich history. Selected items include a 1792 map of the State

of Franklin, an 1831 copy of the Cherokee Phoenix & Indians Advocate newspaper, and a 19th century flintlock muzzle loading rifle made by Baxter Bean of Washington County. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is made possible through a collaboration with the Tennessee State Museum and the Knox County Public Library. The exhibit is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through March 31, 2019. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is FREE to all, and ETHS members always receive FREE admission. The museum is located in the East Tennessee History Center, 601 South Gay Street in Knoxville. For more information about the exhibition, scheduling a school tour, or visiting the museum, call 865-215-8824, email eths@eastTNhistory.org, or visit www. easttnhistory.org. About East Tennessee Historical Society Established in 1834, the East Tennessee Historical Society is widely acknowledged as one of the most active history organizations in the state and enjoys a national reputation for excellence in programming and education. For 184 years, the East Tennessee Historical Society has been helping East Tennesseans hold on to our unique heritage – recording the events, collecting the artifacts, and saving the stories that comprise the history we all share. Christian pop/rock band Sidewalk Prophets brings their immersive brand of ministry to the Paramount. Music legends Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen perform together onstage, and so much more. These events are filling much larger venues across the country. Seeing them in the Paramount’s intimate 749-seat room in the heart of historic downtown Bristol is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its lavish interior and iconic marquee are characteristic of Art Deco movie palaces built in the 1930s. ERIC JOHNSON B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

G

UITAR AFICIONADOS are

all too aware of guitar maestro, Eric Johnson. His 1990 release Ah Via Musicom, which was certified platinum plus and launched Eric’s signature hit “Cliffs Of Dover,” won the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and made him a much envied and mimicked guitarist. Eric and his band will be performing at the historic Bijou Theatre on October 10th, which promises to be an incredible evening of amazing guitar mastery. I called Eric at his Texas home and asked about what his current tour and show will be like for Knoxville. “This is a retrospective thing with the original members of the Ah Via Musicom record – Tommy Taylor (drums) and Kyle Brock,” he said. “We did almost a threemonth tour about six months ago, and it went really well, so we decided to do a second leg to try to go to all the places that we didn’t get a chance to go to on the first run.” When asked when he last played the Knoxville area, Eric said, “You know, it’s been years. We’ve played Nashville, Memphis. We

haven’t been to Knoxville in quite a while. Probably been 10 years.” I asked if Eric was going completely acoustic or going full-blown electric for this leg of the tour. “I might do a few acoustic things, but it’s with the bass player and drummer, originally, that I played with on the Ah Via Musicom record,” he said. “Basically, I’ll do like a short set of just whatever to start the evening and then take a quick break and come back and play the whole Ah Via Musicom record from start to finish for the second set.” As for what it was like for Eric, Tommy, and Kyle to get back together and play again, whether it was different, and if it bred a new feeling and interpretation for the album, Eric said: “There’s a lot of improvisation with most stuff I do – especially the electric stuff. So there’s a lot of room for improvisation that will be a little bit different than it originally was. But the main frame of the theme once we got together was, like, immediately, there was a chemistry that we had originally. I think certain people have certain chemistry and they’re able to do certain things. It just kinda fell into place – as if there had been no time in between.” Every tour seems to have a crowd favorite with a particular artist. I asked Eric if there is a particular tune that seems to draw the biggest reaction.

“I think everybody likes to hear ‘Cliffs of Dover,’” he said. “There are a couple of other ones like ‘Trademark’ and ‘Righteous” and stuff that did well when they came out back in the ’90s. I think they enjoy just hearing the vibe of that record. I guess it’s nostalgic, obviously. They’re pretty open to whatever we want to play.” His tour runs into early November, so I asked what was on his plate after that and what’s going on for him next year. “Well, I’m really well into an acoustic and piano record right now,” he said. “I’m more than halfway finished with that. I’ve just been working on that for the last month and a half. Gonna try to get that done and out. Next year I’ll probably do some new touring on the new stuff. I just want to keep recording and got a bunch of new tunes and ideas for a new electric record as well. Doing a two-volume acoustic record.” While Eric will likely be entertaining us for many, many years to come, I asked him how he would like to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “I think being remembered for just trying to make people feel good while we’re here, you know?” he said. “Standing on that side of the balance system that is making people feel a little more good or more positive or more wholesome. God knows the world needs it! The more people that stand on that balance, the more energy – you truncate that energy. We’re here, so what are we gonna do while we’re here? Are we gonna use our fantastic talent or art or gift or whatever gift we have… how do we use it? Do we use it to disperse more pandemonium or negativity, or do we want to use it to put smiles on somebody’s face? Nothing more, nothing less is what I’d like to be remembered for.” Then, putting a bit of levity into his final comment to me, Eric adds: “Other than that, I want a 200-foot sculpture right in the middle of Austin, Texas. Just kidding!” Tickets can be purchased at www.knoxbijou. org. The extended version of this interview can be read at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with retractable screens, the answer is likely yes. But there’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating today’s popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork designed to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often prevent homeowners from enjoying their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens can offer the perfect solution to these problems by providing innovative solutions designed to enhance and promote your family’s outdoor living experience. Retractable screens not only provide much needed shade, but also allow families to extend the time that they spend on their patios by keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are the perfect solution for blending function and comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using your retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, most retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. They are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend the screens with your interior and exterior color and decorating schemes and can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. To learn more about retractable screen options for your home, visit www.phantomscreens.com today. Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 www.tennesseescreens.com www.phantomscreens.com

Don’t Settle for a Cookie Cutter Home: Custom Build Instead

Jenny Blalock

Licensed General Contractor

N

EW HOME construction

is a great option for many people, but have you ever thought about a custom home instead of a cookie cutter house? I know, the word CUSTOM always sounds expensive. However, building a custom home isn’t necessarily more expensive, and your return on investment can be significantly higher. Building a custom home means more than choosing a floor plan from stock designs, selecting wall paint and paper, and picking out the bathroom fixtures. Truly custom homes are designed from the foundation up to meet your exact needs rather than what someone else expects you to want. Working with a custom home designer enables you to not only have your home laid out and look the way you want, but also have the functionality you need for your home office, your kitchen, and even your garage area. Jenny Blalock, designer/licensed contractor with Luxe Homes & Design, takes your designs from foundation to furniture and transforms your lifestyle needs into the home of your dreams. She can help you assess your family’s lifestyle and your living preferences. At Luxe Homes & Design, Jenny and her team will help eliminate the stress from your home design and building experience. Because there are hundreds of details that go into each home design, Luxe Homes & Design will help you successfully navigate the design/ build process that meets your current and future needs and lifestyle, whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or seasoned professional. Simply because a company can build a house doesn’t make them a good choice as a custom home builder. With so many special options, unique designs, and custom concepts, selecting a home builder that understands how all of those elements combine into your dream home design will likely be the most important choice you make. With Luxe Homes & Design, no detail is overlooked, and everything is designed around your lifestyle and budget. Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

A cookie cutter house means having to pick from their cookie jar. Don’t settle for choosing plans and cosmetic designs that may limit you. By having a oneof-a-kind home, not only will you have the enjoyment of having exactly what you want, but when it comes time to sell, homebuyers won’t have to settle for a cookie cutter lifestyle either.

For a free, no obligation consultation for your new home, contact Jenny Blalock at 865-7554680 or visit www.luxehomesdesign.com. With patient anticipation, your dream home can be easier to discover than you might have imagined.

UTUMN IS A GREAT TIME

to revive a lackluster landscape, so for inspiration and expert advice, come to the Fall Plant Sale and Garden Lecture Series hosted by the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson. The event features special presentations and an exceptional plant sale. Garden lectures begin at 1:30 pm on Thursday, October 4. The plant sale runs from 3 to 6:30 pm. All are welcome, and admission is free. After a one-year hiatus due to a building renovation project, the garden lectures return to the program with special guest Vincent Simeone. Simeone is an acclaimed garden writer and speaker traveling throughout the U.S. on the garden lecture circuit. He is the author of six gardening books and has appeared on several gardening television shows, including Martha Stewart Living. Simeone was a student of esteemed horticulture professors Michael Dirr and Allan Armitage and is currently the director of Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, New York. Following Simeone’s presentation, the plant sale will open promptly at 3 pm. At the sale, shoppers will find an array of plants ideal for this region, including trees, shrubs, and a wide selection of pansies and other plants for

Rev Up Your Garage It Starts with the Floor

W

E’VE ALL seen it: The house

that is the epitome of curbside appeal – until the garage door opens, revealing a disorganized mess. If your garage’s main purpose is random storage, maybe it’s time to repurpose all that valuable space. PremierGarage of Knoxville can help you transform your overlooked and underused garage into functional living space, starting with a custom garage floor to take your garage from frantic to fabulous. Why consider anything beyond your standard-issue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) from soaking into the porous concrete.

» Fill and cover-up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oilstained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous

coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more “finished,” and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in dozens of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

which are known for their longevity and durability, require special handling when cleaning? These hand-crafted pieces of art continue to be produced by hand today in much of the same way as they have been for centuries. When properly cared for, these future family heirlooms, which are crafted using durable, all-natural fibers including wool and cotton, will generally appreciate in value over time and can be shared with future generations to enjoy. But these same natural and organic materials, including dyes, make these otherwise durable and long lasting treasures potentially prone to permanent and usually irreversible damage. While searching for ways to clean their rugs, Oriental rug owners often turn to the Internet for advice. While some suggestions may prove helpful, others can lead to disastrous results. Some rug owners have actually been encouraged to use the same cleaning process used to clean their wall-towall carpeting. Others have been encouraged to wash their rugs on the family driveway. Just imagine the damage that will result to your rug’s fibers when attempting to move a heavy, wet Oriental rug over an abrasive concrete surface. The only way to properly clean an Oriental rug is to wash it in a special, climate controlled facility with specially treated water that is pH balanced and to use cleaning agents that are specifically designed to clean and protect these priceless rugs. With more than 30 years of Oriental rug washing and carpet cleaning experience, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has created a one-of-a-kind, highly specialized, climate controlled Oriental rug washing boutique that uses our proprietary 11-step process to safely wash your family’s Oriental rugs. From ionized water and pH control to special submersion baths, state-of-the-art “Marinator” decon system to ensure your rug is thoroughly cleaned from the inside out, and specially designed drying chambers, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is East Tennessee’s first choice for safe and effective Oriental rug washing. We even have a special process for the removal of pet urine, which can often be successfully removed. With the Christmas season quickly approaching, it’s time to wash your fine Oriental rugs and your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting and upholstery before your guests arrive. Why not call us today? ROWING UP in Pennsylvania, my mother’s kitchen became a very special place to me, especially during the holidays. It was the family gathering place when aunts, uncles, and cousins came to visit. I have fond memories of newborn infants and fiancés being introduced to family members for the first time, roasted Thanksgiving Day turkey, Christmas cookies, and New Year’s celebrations. My own kitchen has many of the same memories that I know my children and grandchildren will cherish as well. Our kitchens remain the centerpiece of American family life and a very special place for creating a lifetime of memories. Unlike any other room in our home, our kitchen exudes a sense of warmth and comfort that welcomes family members and guests. I’ve especially enjoyed the last 13 years of my life as my husband, Buddy, and I have helped thousands of other area families create their own special gathering place in their home’s kitchen. As owners of Granite Transformations, we have helped countless homeowners transform their kitchens into that unique place we remember as children – a room where they can create all-new memories of their own that will them last a lifetime. And it’s that special room that we think back to with the fondest of memories as we get older. The centerpiece of the Granite Transformations’ story is their patented premium engineered granite countertops. They are made from the finest granite, quartz, and post-consumer recycled glass – the

highest quality materials combined with state-ofthe-art technology – to produce the finest granite countertop surfaces on the market. All the beauty nature has to offer, only better. You deserve the best, and you can get it without the demolition and installation headaches associated with ordinary slab granite. Granite Transformations’ surfaces outperform ordinary granite, because they are non-porous, stain resistant, and maintenance-free. There is no sealing necessary to be safe for food preparation. We believe in it so much that we warranty the materials for life. Granite Transformations’ countertops are ideal for homeowners who demand durability and value. Because Granite Transformations’ granite countertops install over your existing counters without messy, time consuming demolition, you can enjoy your new kitchen in as little as one day. We also do backsplashes, bathrooms, bars, and floors. Granite Transformations also offers homeowners other products to help transform their kitchens, including cabinet refacing. You can get a whole new look in days, not weeks. Whether you’re building a new home or updating your existing home, why not let our family help you create that perfect gathering place for your family in your home’s kitchen and begin creating your own fond memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. Plan the Perfect Pantry

O

NCE USED just to stock food,

today’s pantries, whether a walk- or reach-in, are often designed to also store small appliances, serving pieces, and even a second refrigerator. They can serve as an extension to the kitchen. While we all would like the largest pantry possible, a small, well-designed pantry is always better than one that is large but badly designed. If you’re planning your pantry for a renovation or new home, there are several important ideas to keep in mind: Examine the Space Make the pantry easily accessible to areas where you prepare food and cook. Everyone’s kitchen layout, habits, and cooking styles are different, so think about your kitchen space and how you use it. Once you know where your pantry will fit best in your kitchen and how much you need to store in it, you can begin planning the layout. Allow for Walking Space In a walk-in pantry, the temptation is to design for minimum aisle space and maximum storage. This is always a mistake. The

minimum walkway width should be 34”. Unloading groceries in too narrow of an aisle may make you feel like a contortionist. Create Effective Storage When designing a pantry, the most important features maximize convenience, visibility, and accessibility. The pantry should be laid out to quickly see the items you need and easily reach them. By making everything convenient, visible, and accessible, you’ll save time and money, because you won’t keep food past its expiration date or forget about items because you can’t see them. Plan on Adjustable Shelving Altering the height of your shelves will accommodate various sizes of food products and small appliances. Make sure the shelves are not too deep and you can see everything at once by placing smaller items at the front and larger ones at the back. Include Special Storage Features Using narrow cubbies for large platters, spice or wine racks, pull-out wire baskets for root vegetables, and other storage compartments are ideal for awkward items that are

hard to stack. Include a Counter If you have the space, include a countertop to set bags of groceries on while they are being unloaded. This area should be at least 15” wide. There are a number of small appliances you may want to use on the pantry counter, so plan on installing an outlet above the counter. Even if you don’t plan to include any outlets, you never know what you’ll want in the future, and at that point it’s not easy to add them. With preplanning, you’ll be surprised at the storage space, no matter the size of your pantry.

No Way! Are Those Images Real? B Y C H R I S T I N A F I T Z W I L L I A M , C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

I

T’S HARD to believe that we are celebrating 10 years in business this month. Before Surface Doc, my husband, John, was missing out on so much happening in our family because he was working in restaurant management 60+ hours a week, mostly nights and weekends. I was constantly looking for a new career path for him, something we could possibly do together. That’s when I found some videos from a company in Arizona demonstrating cleaning equipment that was so dramatic I was immediately intrigued yet skeptical. So when John got home late that night, we watched in awe one video clip after another. We saw tile and grout, carpet, concrete, stone, and most every other surface we could imagine undergo dramatic transformation. A few days later we traveled to Arizona to see this equipment firsthand. We were even more impressed in person, and Surface Doc was born the following week. We had an amazing service, and we knew it. But those first few months we would pray for the phone to ring. It was a slow start, but we couldn’t go back or give up. Slowly the calls began to come in. Then almost overnight, by word of mouth, Surface Doc

exploded. Being the only deep-cleaning company with this equipment has given our company a niche, which we are grateful for. Sometimes when people check out Surface Doc’s website, they are as skeptical as we were. People have asked us, “Are those images doctored?” Even better is when they stand beside John as he does a test cleaning and exclaim, “I can’t believe what I’m seeing. I never thought my floor could look like this again!” So what makes Surface Doc different? Basically, we use a combination of extreme heat to open the pores of your floor and force out deeply embedded soil with high pressure and extraction to remove ALL foreign matter. Without this combination, one can only get into the top most layer of your floor, leaving most of the embedded soil locked

underneath. But with 3,000 pounds of psi and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of the pores in your floor and whisked away. We even use Green Clean Chemicals and purified water, which ensures absolutely NO residue is left behind. Now we have a plethora of our own unbelievable but real photos and videos from previous jobs. This year we have added a new service called SOFT WASH for your home’s exterior. This is the only safe process for your home’s roof and siding. You can see some of our videos and photos at www.SurfaceDoc.com. Drop us a note or give John a call today at 865-567-1986.

October in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

W

ELCOME TO October, when fall typically starts looking and acting a little more like fall. Temperatures will start to drop, and the humidity will decrease so that we can actually start to enjoy spending time outside. I hope. It all depends on what kind of mood Mother Nature is in. Our average first frost is October 23rd, but it can go a couple of weeks in either direction. Be prepared! There are almost as many chores that need to be done in fall as there are in spring, so let’s get started on your to-do list. » Do your monthly walk around. How did things do this summer? Make notes of what did well and what did not. What changes do you want to make? Is your yard gorgeous in the spring and summer but ugly in the fall and winter? Do plants need to be moved, removed, pruned, or composted? How can you re-work your yard so that you can enjoy it without working yourself to death? If you need help answering those questions, stop in and let us guide you! » I’m sure you have heard that fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs. Our ground doesn’t freeze, so 85% of root growth occurs during the fall and winter.

There are a couple of things, however, to keep in mind: 1. Plants that like the soil warm (perennials, grasses, crape myrtles, etc.) need to be planted soon. If you can’t get them in early this month, wait until spring. 2. October is typically our driest month. If you plant, you will need to water! Remember that sprinklers are not adequate for trees and shrubs. They will require hand watering or drip irrigation. » Did you do a vegetable garden? If it is finished, clean it out and plant a cover crop or amend the soil so that the nutrients can distribute throughout the bed. If you still have cool season vegetables, keep harvesting! Make notes of what did well and plan out your bed for next year. Remember that you cannot replant vegetables in the same place! Move them around. » Have you transitioned your containers for the season yet? Pansies will cheerfully take you through the fall and winter, and there are some lovely companion plants. If you need some suggestions, give us a call or stop by. There are also some great ideas on Pinterest and in various magazines, but you may want to check with us before

planting. Some of those ideas perform best in other parts of the country. » Diseases have been rampant this year. Powdery mildew, leaf spot, shot-hole disease, and root rot have taken a toll on many yards. If you have evergreens that still show signs of fungal disease, you can do a final treatment. Don’t use a product that has a fertilizer at this point in the year, however. You do not want to generate growth. Deciduous trees and shrubs do not need to be treated, but make sure you get all the leaves up off the ground so that the spores don’t re-deposit into the soil. Don’t compost them either or you will contaminate your compost! » Insects are doing a final breeding round and burrowing in, so you can also do one more insecticide treatment on your evergreens. Again, deciduous trees and shrubs do not need to be treated, but get those leaves up! Some plants may need a dormant oil spray, so give us a call if you want to head off problems next year. » If you are not using your containers this winter, dump them out into your flower beds, clean them, and store them where they will not freeze. If you had a problem with fungal diseases, give them a rinse with a mild bleach solution before storing. » If you don’t have many trees in your yard, consider blowing the leaves onto the lawn, running over them with the lawnmower, and then blowing them back onto your beds. They will decompose during the winter and add nutrients to your soil. Don’t do this, however, if you have disease or insect issues. If you have a lot of trees, this may not be practical. » Whether you shred, burn, or rake your leaves, get them off your lawn. If you can’t see your grass, it is being suffocated. » If you don’t have 3” of mulch on your beds, consider adding more. Mulch keeps the moisture and temperature levels stable during the winter. This helps tremendously when the weather is being as erratic as it has been the last couple of years. Remember to make donuts, not volcanoes, around your trees! » Apply a pre-emergent to beds to keep the weed population down. » Don’t forget the birds! Keep your feeders and baths clean and full. Bring in glass or ceramic birdbaths so that they don’t freeze and break. Consider using a plastic or metal alternative or adding a heater. Birds need water in the winter too! Stop by and see us for all your fall planting and decorating needs, or stop by with any questions you may have. We want you to be happy with your yard!

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Pink Muhly Grass and Close Relatives B Y TO M S T E B B I N S , U T / T S U C O U N T Y AG E N T, H A M I LTO N C O U N T Y, C H AT TA N O O G A

T

H E R E N O W N E D German plantsman, Karl Foerster, said that “grasses are the hair of Mother Earth.” Well, Mom becomes a punk rock star with Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) in the garden. When the thousands of tiny bright pink flowers emerge in late summer, they add a floral electrical charge to the garden until frost. Muhlenbergia capillaris (pronunciation – mew-len-BER-jee-uh kap-pill-LAIR-riss), commonly called Muhly grass, is an herbaceous, warmseason perennial grass, hardy in zones 6-11. It is native in a range extending as far west as Texas and Kansas and north into New England. The genus Muhlenbergia was named after one of the first early-American scientists, Lutheran minister, and self-taught botanist, Gotthilf Henry Ernest Muhlenberg (1753-1815). More than 150 species have been described in this genus, but only a few are commercially available. Pink Muhly Grass, which is often sold as Purple Muhly Grass, certainly attracts attention in any garden. It grows from one to four feet tall with a two to four foot spread. The wiry, thin leaves are 18-36 inches long. It clumps but does not spread. The leaves are green throughout the summer and turn copper in the fall. The flowers are grouped together in long, light clusters that mature from the bottom up. They wave and shimmer in the wind. Individual flowers mature to oblong tan or brown seed less than half an inch long. Seed plumes are a food source for birds. Water new plants until they are established. After that, they’ll have good drought tolerance. Muhly grasses need well-drained soil to remain healthy and survive wet winters. They need full sun and dry conditions to look their best and may suffer in shade or wet summers. Use just one or a few to add interesting texture to a perennial garden or border area. Try them on slopes to prevent soil erosion or use in rain gardens. Muhly grass also attracts beneficial insects such as lady beetles (Coccinella spp.), and its clumping habit provides habitat for other wildlife. Plants can be cut back to the ground in late winter before the spring flush of foliage appears. If soil test dictates, give the plants an application of fertilizer as they begin to grow rapidly in spring. The most well-known Muhlenbergia is Pink Muhly, but there are others with magnificent

characteristics. The cultivar ‘White Cloud’ has white instead of pink flowers. The habit is more upright and open and blooms several weeks after Pink Muhly. Lindheimer’s Muhly – Muhlenbergia lindheimeri – is a two to five foot perennial bunchgrass with fine foliage and a fountainlike form. It is a great choice for screening. It has an upright, fountain-like habit. The blue gray foliage reaches four feet, with purplishtinged panicles adding another one to two feet. The blooms ripen to a silvery white. There is also a brilliant hybrid between M. capillaris and M. lindheimeri called ‘Pink Flamingo’. Gulf Muhly – Sweet Grass, Muhlenbergia filipes – is considered by some to be a variety of Muhlenbergia capillaris. It is somewhat shorter and blooms a later than Pink Muhly Grass. Young leaves are used by the Gullah African American population, who live in

the Low Country regions of Georgia and South Carolina, to make traditional sweetgrass baskets. In addition to the M. capillaris species, ‘White Cloud’ and ‘Pink Flamingos’ can be found in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. The UT Gardens in Jackson and Crossville also have the standard Pink Muhly Grass, but the hybrid ‘Pink Flamingo’ can also be found in Jackson. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg. October 2018 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

UTUMN IS ALREADY ushering in cooler daytime and nighttime temperatures, and continued plunging temperatures will make this summer’s 90+ degree days a distant memory. Autumn is a time when we winterize our automobiles, pools, boats, and more. It’s also a time when we begin to eliminate those less energy efficient areas of our homes, such as those windows that let cold outside air in and warm inside air out Poorly fitting windows and low energy efficient windows allow heated and air conditioned air to escape, resulting in higher energy bills. Did you know that heating and air conditioning costs represent nearly 50% of your home’s average energy budget? And that your doors and windows account for more than 40% of your home’s heat gain and loss? Fortunately, today’s homeowner

can benefit significantly from a wide range of energy enhancements to home replacement windows thanks to new, state-of-the-art manufacturing methods and technological improvements. Brun joins Knox Heritage after nearly 25 years with Knoxville-based Scripps Networks Interactive, recently acquired by Discovery. Her experience there includes B2B and B2C marketing, digital/social media, experiential, and corporate social responsibility, supporting the parent company and its portfolio of brands like HGTV and Food Network. In her new role, Brun will oversee all aspects of the Historic Westwood property, including event marketing and rentals. In addition, she will serve a leadership role in planning and marketing Knox Heritage special events to engage members, increase visibility, and raise funds in support of the 501(c)(3) organization. for the preservation of place and structures with historic or cultural significance. The organization’s mission includes several touch points for community engagement – The Historic Westwood Property, vintage home renovations, the Salvage Shop on N. Broadway, and related professional services like federal tax credits management and research. For more information, call 865-523-8008 or visit KnoxHeritage.org. Annette may be reached at extension 2 or via email at annettebrun@knoxheritage.org. About Historic Westwood Historic Westwood was built as a “wedding promise” in 1890 by John Edwin Lutz and his wife, Ann Adelia Armstrong Lutz. Originally sited on 12 acres along Kingston Pike, it was designed by notable architects Baumann Brothers in the grand Richardsonian Romanesque style so popular in the late 19th century. Westwood is one of the treasured houses known as “The Three Sisters,” which also includes Crescent Bend and Bleak House. Adelia Lutz was Tennessee’s first professional female painter, and the house is filled with her beautiful artwork. While placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the property was never protected by local historic zoning or a permanent preservation easement. The Aslan Foundation purchased the iconic property and donated it to Knox Heritage. Now the home is protected into the future and saved

from development, as well as creating a resource for education and preservation advocacy throughout the East Tennessee region. Many capital campaign donors made this possible, including a recent anonymous gift of $65,000, which officially ended the capital campaign which raised more than $1,000,000. The Knox Heritage offices are located at Historic Westwood. It is open as a museum house Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm (free docent-led tours), and the house and grounds are available as a venue for private events.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Protecting Your Boat This Winter YOU HAVE ENJOYED

OCTOBER 31 • 8 PM | TENNESSEE THEATRE

OB DYLAN’S career has lasted the better part of 50 years now. That’s pretty remarkable. What is more impressive is that Dylan has remained not only active for almost all of that period, but controversial. He has never gotten by on sentimentality or nostalgia. He has never repeated his successes. For better or for worse, Dylan has always pushed his work ahead. Bob Dylan is as great a songwriter – ah, let’s not beat around the bush – as great an artist as America has produced. But he’d be the first to tell you that he is part of a long line, one link in an endless chain. You can follow his influence backward or forward according to your own inclination. Or you can spend a long time just listening to Dylan’s five decades of contributions. Wherever you go into it, and whatever you get out of it, your time will be well spent.

STEVE LUKATHER B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

I

T’S FALL, and that means one thing:

Great tours are on the road, and one such tour is Toto. They’re playing East Tennessee this month at Greeneville’s Noswonger Performing Arts Center. Toto’s Steve Lukather is a good friend of Boomerocity, so we recently caught up by phone to see what fans can expect from this month’s show and what else has been going on in Luke’s life. One thing is for certain: You never know what you’re going to get when you’re in a conversation with this guy. “I just got back from the Ringo tour,” he said. “I’ve been taking care of some business. Getting ready to go back out on the Toto tour. We did this Weezer track that we’re going to put out here pretty soon that’s pretty funny – pretty cool, actually, and just hanging around my kids. Being a dad. I did practice for a while this morning, though. I still do that to stay in the game a little bit. I try to win the race. I realize I gotta be in it.” Fans can always expect that Luke and the boys in the band will deliver a top-notch show that’s well worth every penny paid. That said, I asked Luke what fans could expect from Toto’s show this month. “We bring our best,” he said. “We go out there as soon as we strap on the guitars and walk out towards the keyboards and the drums and all that. We revert back to being 16-year-old kids, and that comes across. I’m not saying that we’re jumping around like idiots, but when we get out there, it’s 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2018

an ageless moment. You’re out there. You bring everything you’ve got. We’ve got a wide selection of music to play from, obviously. We’ve got to play the hits and all that stuff, but we’ve got a lot of other music, too. It’s going to be a great show. We’ve been doing it since February in Europe. I’ve been going back and forth. Fifteen weeks in Europe already. I’m ready to play the United States. They get the jokes. You know what I mean? “I promise… no politics. I think we’re all done with it. Let’s play some music, man! That’s what we all want to do. That’s my job. I mean, some people may be more equipped to stand on a soap box, but I’m never really that guy. I’m just your neighborhood guitar player who’ll show up and show you a good time for a couple of hours. We’re going to do that. I promise you that!” I asked Luke what he’s got going on after the Toto tour. “Oh, man! I’m doing Ringo. I’m doing Toto. My book came out last month about my life in the studios and how I came up. We’ve got a box set coming. We’ve got a live DVD from the 40th. There’s more touring all the way through next year. Busy. Happy. Blessed. Thankful in a crazy world that I just don’t want to look at anymore. I pray and hope for the best, be a nice guy, and spread love. That’s about all I can say.” I couldn’t let our conversation conclude without asking him about his new book, The Gospel According to Luke.

“The book’s just a story of my life,” he said. “It’s called The Gospel According to Luke, which is a little play on words. I didn’t mean to offend anybody. It’s just the story of how I came up. Famous records that I played on. People that I’ve worked with. Funny stories. People that I grew up with. Most of them turned out to be famous people. It’s just where I was born – Los Angeles. I had to edit 400 pages into a 300 page book with pictures and stuff. But I have enough for an encyclopedia, so we’ll see. There may be a movie. You never know! Who would you think would play me?” One thing is for certain: We can expect to see, hear, and read a lot more from Steve Lukather in the years to come. You can read the expanded version of our interview with Luke, raw (and I do mean raw) and to the point, at www.boomerocity. com. You can check to see if tickets to Toto’s show are still available by visiting www. npacgreeneville.com. As for Luke’s book, The Gospel According to Luke, it is available online and wherever the latest books are sold. Rest assured that it will be lively, entertaining, and, well, “unfiltered.” Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirtysix years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

The 44th Fall Show is juried by Julie Rabun, Assistant Professor of Art at Carson-Newman. Tennessee Artists Association (TAA) was founded in 1972. The TAA is a civic organization of fine artists with about 50 members. TAA encourages each individual artist to grow and develop through fellowship with other artists, educational programs, and opportunities to exhibit and sell art, and it serves the community through classes. Membership in TAA is open to anyone age 18 years and older and a resident of the state of Tennessee. Dues are currently $50 for single membership, $60 for family, and $15 for students. Members-Exhibition-Call. Charles Peters: Action Paintings on the North Wall Charles Peters will display paintings made with oil/enamel, charcoal, sand, and/or collage. Although Peters has taken many art classes, he is primarily self-taught. He uses books, online courses, documentaries, and other resources to study technique and art history. Artist statement: “I paint everything I see and every way it makes me feel. There is no single subject in my work. My work, to me, is instinctual; I do it as an infant breathes. If I am not an artist in this life, I’m not anything. I’m unhappiness, I’m terror. I paint my chaos so that I may live one day in peace. I work hard to make a living out of my art, and I will thankfully go wherever this life takes me.” Bryan Wilkerson: Tales from the Kiln – Skulls, Goons, and Toons in the Display Case A collection of handmade ceramics and original drawings by Bryan Wilkerson, a Tennessee native and Professor of Art and Design at Roane State Community College. His creative practices are focused primarily on ceramics and public art but extend into design and drawing. His work explores humor, craft, irony, and play through common symbolic references. He is also the creator and director of the ArtMobile traveling gallery and pop up workshop space. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. For more information, contact the Arts & Culture Alliance at 865-523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com. Destination breweries have also been popping up in the scenic countryside around Asheville: Turgua Brewing Company, a small farmhouse brewery set on a five-acre farm in Fairview and using locally sourced fruits and root vegetables, and Whistle Hop, with its antique train-caboose taproom, disc-golf course, and sweeping mountain sights.

Fall Facts, FAST! Asheville is fortunate to have one of the most vivid displays of autumn foliage in the world. Here’s why: » Extreme Elevations: Ranging from 1,500 feet in the valleys to 6,684 feet at Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi River), the color show descends the mountains » Unmatched Biodiversity: There are more than 100 species of deciduous (leaf-shedding) trees in the Blue Ridge Mountains » This results in an unusually long leaf season, starting late September in the higher elevations and extending through early November in the lower regions For more information, visit www.ExploreAsheville.com/ science-behind-fall-color. facebook.com/Asheville. Also, weekly color reports at www.FallintheMountains.com will gather input from biologists and weather experts, color-progression updates from area parks and attractions, autumn travel deals, and fall events. The Case for a Living Will B Y TO M I R M E N

EVERY YEAR

at my annual physical, without fail, my healthcare provider asks me if I have prepared or amended my living will. Contemplating our own mortality often makes us feel uncomfortable, but as I get older, I have come to appreciate that a living will may become the greatest gift you or I can leave our loved ones. And no, a living will is not something that just the elderly should consider. Regardless of our age, each of us is only one unforeseen accident away from benefiting from this simple yet all important document. A living will is a written directive to your family, personal physician, and other healthcare providers about just what type and level of care you would wish to receive in the event that you were unable to make important personal medical decisions on your own in the event of a medical emergency. Your living will can be of great comfort to your loved ones who might be called on to act on your behalf in the absence of this document. Let’s be honest, not everyone knows what decisions you might make on your own, and two or more individuals that might be asked about your

Everyone of every age can benefit from the creation of a living will. No one is immune from a health crisis. treatment options might not be able to agree on what course of action might be best for you. When these decisions are left to others, you potentially place family members in the very difficult position of having to guess as to what care you might have elected to receive. Disagreements among family members can

occur, resulting in strained or even broken relationships that may last for years or longer. And consider as well that these decisions can have longterm financial consequences for your family members as well. A living will removes this burden from your family members to act on your behalf and asks only that they respect the choices you have made. This simple but important document may be the greatest gift you can give to your loved ones who might one day be forced to struggle with making medical decisions on your behalf in the absence of a living will. Everyone of every age can benefit from the creation of a living will. No one is immune from a health crisis. And if you are selfemployed, a living will is just one of several important documents necessary to assure the future success of the small business that you have devoted your life to, protecting it for your heirs. Our families deserve the peace of mind that can come from the creation of a living will.

A Professional Understands the Difference Between Criticism and Correction

I

NTENT IS EVERYTHING. The

easiest way for me to describe the difference here is to simply give the definition of these two words: » Criticism: The act or an instance of making an unfavorable or severe judgment, comment, etc. » Correction: Something offered or substituted for an error; an improvement; an adjustment made in order to increase accuracy, as in the use of an instrument or the solution of a problem When we’re working with others, of course there are going to be endless situations where we disagree with how someone is handling a solution, or perhaps we dislike the approach one is taking. Yes, we can criticize all day long if we choose. We can announce to the world how we would do it differently, how our ideas are better, how we are superior in all things and in all ways, including thoughts, actions, behavior, etc. Is this sometimes effective in getting what we want? Yes, sometimes. What’s the end result, however, if this is our common

approach to making changes or affecting change? People tire of us, of our criticism and complaining, and of our overall negative character. It’s exhausting to be around. What’s the solution? Correcting with a purpose. Yes, sometimes behavior or ideas or thought processes do need adjusting, but hopefully, if approached in the spirit of improvement instead of chastisement, then the one needing the correction is usually much more willing to comply. We must motivate and inspire others to conform to the standards of excellence. We do this by setting the example, setting the expectations with extreme clarity, and then correcting with the purpose of improving if needed. Instead of demanding correction, I have learned that with asking enough questions, usually the correcting can come from the individual rather than me imposing the correcting. Here’s a list of questions that encourage correction. » This looks great. Can you think of any way that we could tighten up the expenses for this project? » Wo u l d y o u m a k e a n y o t h e r

recommendations that would further the effectiveness of this proposal? » Are there any other resources that we could “tap into” that would free up some of the resources we are using for this project? » Could you brainstorm with your colleague about a solution to that one area that we still haven’t determined the most efficient way to handle? » Looking back, what would you have done differently? » What have you learned from this experience? Before we start to criticize, let’s ask ourselves if we are just being critical, or is our purpose to improve and move forward? Unless we have a better solution, it’s best to keep our mouths closed.
