The island of Skopelos belongs to the Sporades complex. Its location within the Aegean Sea, as well as its proximity to mainland Greece were crucial factors that affected the historical and residential development of the island.
The subject of the present thesis is the analysis of the special architectural character of the Chora, that accumulates features that are not common in the architecture of the Aegean islands. The approach of the subject starts with the examination of the factors that led to the prosperity period of Skopelos and by analyzing the built tissue and network of roads in the settlement, the evolution process of the village was defined, as well as its successive expansion phases. Today, almost all the houses of the Chora are covered with white lime and present the well-known image of the Aegean islands. One major difference though appears in the housing form: the “four-sloped” roof. A “clue” that reveals the different origins and uniqueness of architecture in Skopelos.
