…from design design to to BUILD BUILD …from Our Design Derby House designers use the knowledge and experience gained over 30 years to assist you, your builder or your architect. We focus on ensuring that every building receives personal attention and we are proud that the results are aesthetically pleasing, suit their environment and yet are fully functional.
Our Timber Derby House joinery is made from Scandinavian Redwood, Pinus Sylvestris, produced in sustainable forests. A light coloured resinous wood, with reddish brown heartwood. Extra resin in Redwood helps preserve the timber making it a strong, stable softwood, which works well with hand and machine tools. We treat the Redwood by dipping into Golden Brown Cuprinol, wood preservative, known for its long lasting effects and deep penetrating action to offer full protection. Wood – warm in winter and cool in summer – the natural choice.
Our Location
4
Based in the beautiful village of Eardisley, Herefordshire we prepare all the timber structures in purpose built workshops. Our Sales and Customer Service staff are on hand to speak directly with a craftsman when specific technical knowledge is required.
Our Team We have a very close knit team of experienced, time-served artisans, specialists in their particular areas. Their craft has been gained over many years and although we embrace new methods and technology, traditional values remain a key focus. Customers often require help, advice and after sales service. The Derby House customer services team plays a key part in gaining innovative ideas from customer feedback.
Site Visits We are happy to offer a site survey to discuss and advise on the position, layout and options available for your proposed site.
Groundwork We can help by preparing base drawings for your local contractor or we have preferred contractors who regularly work with us who could complete the work. Getting the preparation right is very important – the better prepared your site the better the final installation will be.
Planning Permission Derby House will always offer advice where we can and we are able to supply finished drawings to support a planning application. Planning permission is usually required for buildings, but this will vary with different authorities and their regulations. Wood is an excellent choice as it may be harder to obtain planning for brick buildings.
Modular Design Our loosebox units are based on a modular design, so by using various combinations we should be able to supply a stabling complex to suit virtually any situation.

We can provide you with an experienced professional team or you may use your own installers. A standard block of 2 units will take about one day to erect on a prepared base. “Derby House really took on board what we were hoping to achieve with our building in matching functional new doors and windows to what is effectively a 17th Century barn.” Green Marsh Farm, Henley on Thames
Individual Protection If it’s protection in a field you require we can manufacture any size and shape to suit your needs, whether you are protecting your horse, other livestock, hay or vehicles. Shelters are manufactured to the same standards as all of our buildings, but we have included additional features for strength and stability. For complete protection and safety the roof is raised giving maximum headroom and a canopy helps to keep out the worst of the weather. Our Mobile Field Shelter is versatile as you can place it where you want it and as it’s mobile planning permission is not usually necessary. Plus it can easily be converted to a stable with a front panel and door – simple, but effective. …attention to to DETAIL DETAIL …attention Through years of development and innovation Derby House Stabling includes, as standard, many design features others have often attempted to duplicate. It is this attention to detail that ensures our buildings are constructed to highest quality.
Doors
Construction
Unique to Derby House all our stable doors are screwed, ledged and braced for exceptional strength. (full construction details are on page 12).
We always consider the health and welfare of the horse so for safety there are no protruding fixings. Screw fixings are used predominantly throughout and for added strength most products are mortise and tenon jointed.
Furniture 10
All furniture is rust proofed, heavy duty, galvanised steel or bright zinc plated. Other styles and finishes, such as self colour are available on request.
Metal Protection Whatever your horse biting requirements - we’ve got it covered. (full details are on page 14).
Roof
Finishing Touches
Specially designed by us our continual ridge vent has been in use for over a decade. Initially introduced for a Racing Yard, it has proven to be so successful we suggest it as an element in all complexes. Expelling stale air and dust and increasing air exchange dramatically provides an extremely healthy environment for horses, without causing any draughts and it will not allow rain or snow to enter in. (full roofing specifications on the reverse of the price list).
Cover strips are fitted to give a smooth, clean appearance and extra protection against the weather. A beautiful wooden clock tower and hand cut weather vane enhance the appearance and add to functionality. Bespoke designs available on request.
For value and quality Derby House is the only choice. Windows As standard we offer a choice of four different styles. All handmade, mortise and tenon jointed in Redwood. Rebated and fitted with a mesh grid internally for protection and security, this is removable for ease of cleaning. (full details on page 15)
Grids and Grilles Help to relieve boredom and isolation, improves light, ventilation and viewing access at foaling times. (full details on page 15)
Before you make your final choice of manufacturer, we encourage you to study the design features we incorporate as standard. Not only does Derby House strive to serve the customer, but we also aim to create the very best living quarters for our equestrian friends.

‌from NEW NEW BUILD BUILD ‌from Derby House buildings are fitted as standard with deluxe, Redwood doors, but we can supply any bespoke design for fitting into stone, block or brick built buildings. All our doors can also be supplied untreated to allow you to paint them to the colour of your choice. Stable Doors
Garage Style Doors
Garage Stable Doors
Beautifully crafted in select 22mm planed, V jointed, tongue and groove boarding. Our doors are uniquely screwed through the ledge and brace for strength and leave the external face unmarked, eliminating moisture traps, unlike doors nailed through the front. They are treated with Golden Brown Cuprinol and lined with 12mm exterior plywood for protection with galvanised hinges and bolts fitted.
For a traditional, classic look when renovating or converting old stables and barns. 213mm high and supplied as a pair they are rebated to close firmly together, keeping the elements at bay. They are unlined and are complete with galvanised furniture. For extra strength a framed, ledged and braced version is available.
A popular choice when converting garages into stables or to keep a degree of consistency in a courtyard of stables and a garage.
Bottom Half Doors Perfect for sheltered areas and American Barn type internal stabling where a top door is not required.
Top Doors Ideal as a hayloft loading door. When added to the rear or side of a stable, provides additional light and ventilation with an all round view for the horse, helping to relieve boredom.
Tack and Feed-room Doors
12
Whilst not designed to house animals these doors are constructed to the same standards as our deluxe stable doors, but are unlined. Door hook, padlock bolt and hinges in heavy duty galvanised or bright zinc plated steel are fitted. A recommended extra is a full sheet metal lining for total strength and security.
Barn Doors Redwood framed, ledged and braced barn doors that are built to last. They fit into any location and suit any style of building. They come hinged, or if you have a large opening to fill or when space is of a premium, a sliding system is available.
Galvanised anti-chew strips (stable door frames only)
Planed 45mm x 22mm slamming strip 100mm x 75mm Planed joinery grade Redwood timber
Frames Redwood frames are tenon jointed and secured with aluminium star dowels for a totally professional finish unique to Derby House. Planed timber fitted to the inside of the frame acts as slamming strips when the door is being closed. As standard galvanised anti chew strips are fitted for protection to the head and upper parts of the jambs and the door post tops are protected with galvanised capping. If complete protection from wheelbarrow bumps and chewing horses is needed then we offer a frame fully fitted with metal protection, which is maintenance free and unlike a solid metal frame will absorb impact if kicked.
Windows When stabling a horse light and ventilation are important factors to consider. To suit most requirements we offer a choice of 5 standard designs, Hopper, Combi Hopper, Opening, Fixed or Louvre. Made from Redwood timber, tenon jointed, glued and star dowelled together, they come as standard with a detachable, internal galvanised grille for security, rebated ready for glazing, which we can complete.
Ventilators Derby House buildings are fitted as standard with a ventilator in the gable end wall to maximise air circulation to create a healthy environment for your horse to live.

Internal Partitions with sliding doors
Anti-weaver door grid with additional infill
An ideal solution for diversification convert a barn into separate stables. Internal partitions provide a feeling of space and height giving a light airy atmosphere and allow horses to see each other so helping to alleviate boredom. Manufactured in one-piece for easy installation, partitions have the option of hinged, sliding or dividing doors. Made up of 22mm vertical steel bars with Redwood timber, tongue and groove boarding that is fully lined internally. As an alternative to wood we can source coloured, plastic boarding. For added safety and protection to the horse our partitions are fitted onto a rolled, galvanised U channel frame, which springs slightly if kicked by a horse, absorbing impact and helping to reduce the risk of muscle damage.
Safety, Light and Ventilation Internal grilles can easily be built into timber or masonry openings, improving light, ventilation and helping to relieve boredom. Door grilles allow the top door to be hooked open so that horses can view the activity outside. To reduce vices fit anti-weaver grids to stable doors and use an infill to convert it into a top door grid.

Hygiene Stokbord is one of the most hygienic linings for stables and horse boxes. Made from 100% recycled plastic it is extremely durable, rot proof, non toxic and non absorbent. The junction of the walls and floor can be effectively sealed so that all internal surfaces are capable of being cleaned and disinfected. We recommend that stable floors should be of hygienic non-slip material, such as concrete or rubber matting and fitted to allow free draining.

Derby House can supply it fitted, or we provide whatever you need to protect your existing buildings. Any design, any size. Whatever your horse biting and kicking requirements – we’ve got it covered.

Satisfaction You don’t just have to believe what we say about ourselves, here are some of our customers own testimonials. via email “Just a short note to comment that Jens and Robert did an excellent job in completing the stable and tack room. They proved to be extremely efficient and worked hard at both ends of the day to ensure rapid construction. Please pass on our compliments. We look forward to making use of what appears to be a high quality building and thanks to all concerned at Derby House.” Mike and Eve Ray-Johnson
letter of thanks “Having now had nearly six months use of our Fishing Hut and Garage complex at Ledyatt, I am writing to say how extraordinarily pleased we are with the product. Both the buildings have stood up to the most horrendous amounts of rain and storms without a hint of a leak, or any other problem which considering the very exposed location that we have is a testament to your design skill and

constructional abilities. We were very impressed with the whole process and the way in which you dealt with the never ending changing specification and individual requirements. All in all a thoroughly professional and enjoyable experience and we shall undoubtedly be placing further orders for even more complicated and intricate buildings in the future.” Kinpurnie Estate Office
