The project entailed an expansion of the existing Melbourne Immigration Museum, it is a heritage building that formerly served as the Custom House for new immigrants in 19th Century. The design brief mandated the incorporation of a new gallery space spanning a minimum of 1,500 square meters. Additionally, the project called for the integration of a new program aimed at attracting visitors to the museum.

Expansion of Melbourne Immigration Museum Here is a skill learning and jobs Centre at immigration museum for newly coming immigrants while expanding the existing exhibition space to maintain the museum's education role for the public. the original site of the Melbourne Immigration Museum is the old customs building in Melbourne.

The intervention is the gateway to jobs and the gateway to opportunities.

Based on the Characteristics of Recent Migrants Survey (CoRMS) conducted across Australia in November 2019,A third (33%) reported experiencing some difficulty finding their first job. Also the primary difficulties faced by new immigrants pertain to language and communication, given that English is the official language in Australia. Many immigrants who do not speak English as their first language face significant obstacles in integrating into society.

In this way, the new immigration museum is not only a repository of old immigration history, but also writes a new immigration history for the future through active participation and helping new immigrants.

Multi-use of material (Weathering steel) Weathering steel as the most important material at the staircase and to guide the circulation. By employing Weather steel and its colour reminiscent of gold, the material propose a concept that pays tribute to the building’s "Gold Rush" history. The Shinny yellow orange colour culturally connect the past with the present, and the structure physically connect the existing structure with the expansion. As the material ages gracefully, the vibrant orange hue transforms into a more subtle copper shade, symbolizing the immigration on this land is an ongoing process and happening every day.

Except from the ground connection, there is a tunnel connect to the new structure and goes directly into the long room. Also, the glazing exterior of expansion reflect the shadow of heritage façade, making new building part of the extension of the history and heritage language.

The section between existing and expansion. The weathering steel elements are derived from the gold colour of sculpture from the main doorway and it continues to wrap around the building just like a gold ribbon to tell the story and lead the circulation.

The material also be used at different scales, for example, it also be used in the exhibition to display artifacts , it can also be bend down become a seat, or the decoration on the ground and doorway to tell the story and direct the visitors journey of experience.

Tunnel Walkway stretches into the Existing Heritage Long Room as a retrofit addition, while preserving the heritage architecture features.

DESIGN BRIEF: It is easy to think of hutongs as extensions of home space, even if they are actually public Spaces. People attach various meanings to hutong, such as relaxing in the sun, drying clothes, playing cards and mahjong, and even hosting banquets and entertaining guests. The concept of home is expanded. Even though the living space of people's physical home is very small, People's Daily life is not at home, but in the public area. The activity area of domestic living extends to the city limits. This kind of special way of life produced under the restriction of times and economy is the rudiment of co-living. With the development of economy, people can buy their own real estate, and the life of the big family is divided into small families. However, the relationship between neighbors is gradually becoming indifferent, which is due to the disappearance of public shared space. Destination is a place you would go and stay. Concerned with the lack of facilities and the absence of quality communal space, original residents decide to sell and move out to bigger apartments outside of the city center. The project will give back the public gathering space back to the residents and keep the tradition of “sharing “in hutong. Let the residents have no burden to come directly from the home doort ot the place to rest, as they used to rest in the hutongs. It also aim to integrate greenery and create a “pocket park” for surrounding residents to challenge the growing disinterest of the hutong tenants.

03 LIVING PALETTE

(CoHousing in Melbourne Inner Suburb) Third Year Individual Work - 2020, Semester 2

DESIGN BRIEF:

ARCH30002 Design Studio Epsilon

The topic of Studio Epsilon is collective housing and the design of multiresidential buildings in the present context of middle-ring suburbs in Melbourne, characterised by demographic changes, economic pressures and diversified ways of living. We will be seeking new housing solutions which are better suited to contemporary societal needs, and we will be pursuing housing models which provide communal amenities and integrate other uses. We will focus on how people may live closer together, and how design can provide innovative and lasting solutions to support communal living.

04 SYMBIOTIC PLAZA Master of Architecture Year 1- 2020 APPLIED ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY

Site Location: 185-227 Spring Street, Melbourne Tutor: Yohan Abhayaratne - yabhayaratne@unimelb.edu.au

AutoCAD RHINO Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator Adobe Indesign

The project ‘SYMBIOTIC PLAZA’ is a mixed-use tower with a hotel stacking on the top of an office building and the main concept is to provide different living conditions, achieving a harmony ‘symbiosis’of the programs. The site is located on 185-227 Spring Street, on the northeast side of Melbourne CBD, Facing an area of big greenery of Parliament Garden on the east side. This high-rise project aims to respond to the surrounding commercial context with its incorporation of both office and hotel functions.

The 240m tall structure is consist of four parts: - Low-rise levels: Podium, 20 meters tall, 3 levels. -Medium rise levels: 12 offices floors and 2 mechanical levels with an efficiency 82%. -High rise levels: 15 offices floors and 1 mechanical level with an efficiency 86%. -Sky levels: 17 hotel floors (including 1 sky lobby) and 1 mechanical level with an efficiency 89%. And there are four lift groups service each of these levels to minimize the waiting time. The perimeter of podium is 3m back away from the site boundary from eastside, and 9900mm back away from North Lonsdale Street. And the tower above is 5m setback from the edge of podium. The designed tower has 49 floors and sits at 240m in height. The overall design ensures the maximum amount of area on each floor, achieving 86% in efficiency and 1:15 in FAR. The tower volume above 32nd floors on the sky levels (hotel part) are reduced based on a 3mx3m grid to prevent the wind load on the highrise building. In addition, the edge corners on all four sides are chamfered to correspon

The overall structure of the designed tower utilizes the outrigger and belt truss system in order to effectively control the excessive drift due to the lateral load coming from the natural winds in Melbourne.

The core is located centrally in the floor plan, and the shape of the core is a square form to resist torsion. The core wall has been designed to withstand most of the lateral loads and has been connected to the perimeter concrete mega-columns at the corners through the outriggers and the belt trusses. A 1500mm building module has been selected to provide a basis for the interior and exterior design.

To control solar gain, an intelligent blind system is applied to the fully glazed facade as one of the passive design strategies. As regards the double facade, the system is called Closed Cavity Façade (CCF). There is a cavity between the outer skin and inner skin of glass, which is permanently conditioned with clean and dry air. The shading device is impacted in the cavity.

The project is located in Shijiazhuang, China. As supporting facilities of the community, the kindergarten needs to fit in with the modern style of the community as a whole. Due to the surrounding high-rise blocks, the minimum daylight standard requires that the children's class activity units can only be located in the south. Therefore the stairwell and logistics area was placed on the north side of the building to ensure maximum daylight in the children's area. The design inspiration of the sloping roof is derived from children's paintings, and its shape also conforms to the ideal house shape in children's minds. The design's main goal is to offer a sunny and cheerful environment where children can enjoy a happy and well-illuminated childhood.
